6 CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD THAT WILL AMAZE YOU! By Pramod Nair
“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” - Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States. Christmas is almost here! It is that season of the year which resonates with a glow of joy and wellbeing. This is the time when love for one another, kindness, caring, peace and forgiveness is celebrated around the globe.
A snack for Santa Claus & his reindeer On Christmas Eve, children in Ireland leave mince pies and a glass or bottle of alcoholic drinks – or a pint of milk and cookies – as a snack for Santa Claus. Even Rudolph, the rednosed reindeer of Santa, is not forgotten and a special carrot is left for him as a midnight snack.
14
The world’s first commercial Christmas card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole and illustrated by John Callcott Horsley in London on 1st May 1843. The customs and traditions connected with this festival of delight are numerous and varies from culture to culture. You may be familiar with customs like Christmas decorations, Christmas trees, exchanging of gifts and Christmas carols as they are observed all around the world. But in some cultures, Christmas is practiced with customs and traditions that are fascinating and even strange. From across the globe, we bring you some of the lesser known Christmas traditions that may surprize you.
Going to the Church on Roller Skates In Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela, from the 16th of December to Christmas eve, you will see people rollerskating to attend the early morning church services. The roads are often closed due to traffic during these early hours and also taking the safety of the skaters into consideration.
Toss your shoes and find if you will get married soon In Czech Republic, it is believed that unmarried women can find out whether they will get married soon by tossing a shoe over their shoulder on Christmas day. If the shoe lands with the toe end pointing towards the door, it is believed that they will get married soon.
Making a huge straw goat In Gävle, a city in Sweden, a traditional Christmas display of a huge straw goat is annually erected during Christmas time. This straw goat is about 43 feet tall and it was first built in 1966. The 1st goat was burnt down the same year and since then the Gävle goat is targeted by troublemakers every year. Since 1966, it has been burnt down or damaged more than 30 times.
Christmas trees decorated by spiders!
Going crazy on fried chicken
In Ukraine, it is believed to bring luck if Christmas trees are decorated with artificial spiders and spider webs. These small ornamental spiders are called Pavuchky, which means little spiders, and decorating Christmas trees with them is based on an Eastern European folktale.
Eating fried chicken from restaurants on Christmas day is a popular custom in Japan. Thanks to a highly successful advertisement campaign by KFC in 1974 promoting their fried chicken, fast food restaurants in Japan make exceptional business on Christmas day.

‘‘If I Can Do It, So Can You.” - Building confidence through modeling Dear Friend, My name is Jasmine Lenna Satchwell and I am 8 years old in the 4th and 5th grade. I’m from America but have been living in the UAE for 4 years with my mom. This is my story: I was 3 years old when I did my first photo shoot which was in America. I was not nervous and I totally enjoyed taking pictures. Once I became older, I was so shy I would not talk to anybody that I did not know. I moved to the UAE at the age of 4. My mom noticed that I was becoming a shy person so she would force me to go and do things like order food or ask people for information we may have needed. She did this so it would help me to get over my shyness. Guess what? It was working! I would order food, pay for it and also order room service and ask people for things we needed. At the age of 6, I had a fashion show birthday party. My friends and I walked on a runway showing off different clothes. That was when I discovered my talent in modeling. When I was on the runway I didn’t feel scared at all and I was told that I was really good at it. At the age of 7, I couldn’t believe it, I got my first job modeling for Babyshop stores. I was very nervous because I was confused on what to do, but it excited me. At first, I felt like I wasn’t doing very well but as the shoot went on I became more and more relaxed. In the end I realized that it was fun and it was something I wanted to do again. I continued to get more jobs and started to come out of my shell of shyness more and more. More opportunities came I modeled for Namshi online stores, had a photo shoot with a well-known stylist and studio and have had photographers contact me so they can take my pictures. I even had my
photos shown in the Dubai mall. Soon I will have one of the biggest jobs I have ever had in my modeling career which is to participate in Runway Dubai, a big fashion event. I feel so nervous about it; but I know that I work good under pressure. Since my mom gave me several tips to help me become more confident, I want to share some things that she encouraged and pushed me to do. These things were uncomfortable sometimes but they helped me to overcome some of my fears. Try these out: •
Instead of doing those things you love like playing sports, singing, dancing or even modeling by yourself, invite a friend.
•
Instead of your parents ordering food from a restaurant, you do it.
•
Take acting classes.
•
Practice presentations at school, at home or just in front of other people. My mom encouraged me to run for SRC which is like class president in my school. I had to do a speech in front of my whole class and some parents.
Although I’m still a little shy, I’m still overcoming it by not quitting. I try to get as many jobs as possible so I can get used to it. If you want to do something big that you are fearful of, try these tips and just go for it! You will never know how great you are at something if you don’t try. If you are shy and have a fear being seen, you have to find the way to gain courage. I hope my story has helped you. If I can do, it so can you! Yours Truly, Jasmine Satchwell ISSUE 46 -KIDZ.BLOG! 17
‘‘HAPPINESS IS POSSIBLE EVEN IN A ‘BROKEN BODY’ ’’: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ALS By Cinta Gibbins
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a condition that affects the neurons responsible for muscle movements. In this condition, for reasons unknown, neurons die which leads to a progressive loss of the ability to move any muscles in the body. ALS affects ‘voluntary’ muscles; those controlled by the conscious mind such as legs and arms muscles. However, on its own, it does not affect the heart muscle, sensation, thought process or the ‘smooth organ’ of the digestive system, bladder or any other internal organs. Symptoms • Weakness in legs and arms • Weakness in the bulbar muscles(muscles in the mouth and throat that are responsible for chewing, talking • and swallowing). • Muscle wasting and persistent twitching Later stage symptoms • The loss in the ability to walk, talk, using arms and hands. • The loss in the ability to swallow and hold the head up. • Weakness in the respiratory organs which makes breathing and even coughing difficult.
18
Teatment • ALS does not have a cure. However, there are many treatments that can be used to improve the quality of life and retaining functional abilities. • To improve muscle movement and strength, a physical therapist works with the affected person to help them in implementing exercise and stretching programs that aid in improving general health. For example, swimming is a good form of exercise as it provides low impact work out to most muscles in the body. • In improving speech and swallowing difficulties, a speech-language therapist can aid in minimizing effects through training. They can also offer help in offering communication aids such as computerassisted devices. • In terms of food, a nutritionist can offer advice on the proper diet that can prevent jaw exhaustion and even chocking.
Successful and famous people with ALS • Stephen Hawking (Jan 8, 1942- March 14, 2018) • Jason Becker (Jul 22, 1969-present) • Lou Gehrig (June 19, 1903- June 2, 1941)
Personal Story Name: Javeria Malik Career: Certified Makeup Artist and Chef In today’s world, growing up with this or any other condition is tough and challenging. Making friends and fitting in is even harder for children with this condition. When I was a child, despite being active in school, (taking part in every school activities such as drama and sports), I tried hard to look like other kids. I fell a lot and this somehow made me self-conscious in terms of how people perceive me. Parents of children with this condition may be particularly concerned about their children’s abilities to make and keep friends. Always remain positive and assist your children to set goals. Discover the passion in them and help them harness their gifts. Your words and actions can have a profound impact on your children. Today this condition has helped me have a positive attitude towards life. No-doubt life was tough in school and university, but I always acted strong. I have to admit that I also had inner bullies; fear and self-doubt. However, I believe that true happiness is really possible in a ‘broken’ body. No one should be ashamed of their scars because those are what makes you beautiful and unique! SMA may have weakened my muscles but it can never take away the spirit in me. So never give up or lose hope.
“I believe that true happiness is really possible in a ‘broken’ body. No one should be ashamed of their scars because those are what makes you beautiful and unique! ”

Starting with a simple backpack, this is a no-brainer as any functional and busy ones in your life would truly appreciate this. If you prefer to amp it up a little up, then head out and purchase a detailed bag/clutch, a case for glasses or sunshades or a patterned scarf depending on the taste of the person. 20

“A gift consists not in what is done or given, but in the intention of the giver or doer. - Lucius Annaeus Seneca
THE STATIONERY HOARDER I mean, many of us love good stationery! And the best part is that it can be personalized depending on the individual as well as the factor that it is a failsafe purchase. Iridescent seems to be quite a unique theme across the stationery universe so grab an iridescent themed product which can be pen, pencils, journals, notepads and much more! However, if you have a classy person in your life, gifting a simple, yet luxurious branded pen would suffice. ISSUE 46 -KIDZ.BLOG! 21
SUPER MARIO
AND THE MAN WHO INSPIRED THE NAME OF THE MOST
LOVABLE COMPUTER GAME CHARACTER
Super Mario is one of the most iconic and loved characters in the video game history. With over 500 million copies of games sold worldwide, this is one of the most sold video game franchise on our planet. Created by the Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto in 1981 for Nintendo, this cute and adventurous little guy has millions of fans across the world. Making a humble debut appearance as Jumpman in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981, Mario soon became the icon of a billion dollar franchise with super hit games like Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros - which was released in 1985 for Nintendo’s gaming console named Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) - alone has sold more than 40 million copies in print, making it one of the bestselling games of all time.
Some super exciting and fun facts from the Super Mario Kingdom! •
Super Mario has appeared in more than 200 different computer game titles and has inspired a range of movies, shows, merchandise and comic books.
•
The full name of the character Mario is Mario Mario and that of his younger brother is Luigi Mario.
•
The name of Mario’s brother Luigi is pronounced as ruiji in Japanese, which means ‘similar’. In the early Super Mario games, both these brothers looked almost identical and it was with the release of Super Mario Bros. 2 that Luigi was given more defined characteristics. He was made taller and was given the ability to jump higher than his elder brother in the gameplay.
•
Princess Peach, who is the princess of the fictional Mushroom Kingdom in the Mario games, has appeared in the Forbes Fictional 15 , an annual ranking of the richest fictional characters. With a net worth of 1.3 billion dollars, she was number 15 in the 2007 listing.
•
In the initial phases of the creation of Donkey Kong and the Mario games, Shigeru Miyamoto was actually planning to come up with a game featuring the cartoon character Popeye. But the plan was scrapped by Nintendo because of the difficulties it faced in acquiring the global rights to use Popeye as a character in the game.
The game follows the adventures of Mario in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom, and he is often joined by his younger brother Luigi in his quests. Both Mario and Luigi are portrayed as Italian American plumbers within the game.
Mario Arnold Segale – The man who inspired the name ‘Mario’ It may come as a surprise for even the most hardened Super Mario fan to know that the name of the much adored title character in the Mario Video game franchise, was actually based on a real life person. According to legends, the name of the character, who enthralled millions of gaming fans across the globe with his adventures, was inspired by Mario Arnold Segale, a successful American businessman and real estate developer. In the early 1980s, the Nintendo of America was operating out of a warehouse in Tukwila, Washington, which was owned by Segale. Nintendo, which was working on their arcade title Donkey Kong at that time, was under financial pressure and had rental dues with Segale. It is popularly believed that lead character – which Shigeru Miyamoto initially considered naming ‘Mr. Video’ - was renamed
to Mario by Nintendo as a tribute to the landlord of their headquarters building. Mario Segale was born on April 30, 1934 in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. He was successfully involved in a number of development projects and real estate investments in the Seattle area from the 1950s onwards. He passed away on October 27, 2018 at the age of 84.

Cool New Year Traditions
From Around The Globe By Pramod Nair
New Year’s Day, the first day of a brand new year – January 1 according to the modern Gregorian calendar and the Julian calendar -, is celebrated with a variety of cultural, social and religious observances around the world. In most cultures, the occasion is observed with a variety of ceremonies and rites that symbolically represent the casting off of the old year and expressing joy in the arrival of a fresh new year. New Year’s Day is probably the most celebrated public holiday across the world, and fireworks, parades, wishing friends and family and making New Year resolutions, are some of the most common traditions associated with New Year and New Year’s Eve. The very concept of celebrating the arrival of a new year can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia and Rome. Back in those days, it was not January 1st, which was observed as the start of a new year; but still the concept of welcoming a fresh year with festivities was observed throughout the history of mankind.
A showcase of cool New Year traditions from all corners of the world The Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop In New York City, on the occasion of New Year’s Eve, the Times Square Ball, located on the roof of the New York Times Building, is lowered down a specially designed flagpole, starting at 11:59:00 p.m (Eastern Time Zone), with a countdown from sixty seconds until one second. The ball descends 141 feet in sixty seconds and reaches the bottom of the flagpole with the arrival of New Year. This event is accompanied by other festivities like live music performances and fireworks. The ball drop was first held on December 31, 1907 to welcome the year 1908.
The Polar Bear Plunge In countries like Canada, Netherlands, the US and the UK, an event, which is often referred to as the polar bear plunge or polar bear swim is conducted during New Year. People get together on beaches and run into the icy waters to take a swim, while welcoming a brand new year. Eating Grapes on New Year’s Eve In Spain, people keep
12 grapes within their reach while waiting for the new year to arrive on the New Year’s Eve. When the clock strikes 12 at midnight, one grape is stuffed into the mouth on each stroke of the clock, and if all grapes are eaten within the period of the strikes it is believed that the fresh year will be full of good luck.
Good Luck Coins
In Greece and Cyprus, families and friends gather together on New Year’s Eve. At midnight the lights are switched off and a specially prepared pie having a coin is cut to celebrate the occasion. Whoever wins the piece of pie with the coin is believed to have good luck for the whole year. Similarly in Bolivia, coins are stuffed into sweets on the occasion of New Year festivities and those finding the coins are considered lucky.
Burning Effigies
In Panama, effigies of famous are burned in order to bring good luck on New Year. In Ecuador too, effigies and sculptures of celebrities and pop culture figures made of Papier-mâché are sold on streets, which are then burned before the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Hogmanay and first-footing
In Scotland, the New Year’s Eve is celebrated in a unique manner and this occasion is referred to as Hogmanay. It is a tradition that the first person to step inside a home – a custom called firstfooting - after midnight on New Year’s Eve will determine the luck of the house owner for the whole new year. The occasion of Hogmanay is celebrated with fireworks, swinging of burning fireballs and parades.
Dropping a Dollop of Ice Cream In Switzerland, it is believed
that dropping a scoop of ice cream on the floor on the occasion of New Year, will bring in an year of abundance and good fortune.
Blessing the Cows
In rural Belgium, the farmers bless their livestock with happy new year wishes, which is believed to bring a year of prosperity, well-being and excellent health.

Calm Your Nerves -
PRACTIVE THE ART OF MINDFULNESS By Raneem Nageeb
26
What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is the ability to pay full attention to something happening in the present. When you are mindful, you clear your mind from distractions and focus on the here and now. In order to achieve this state of mind, you must slow down what you are doing and pay close attention. This will help you feel calm and relaxed.
If you are ever sad, upset, or angry, being mindful can help make you feel better. Here is how: 1. Mindfulness allows you to focus on your 5 senses instead of focusing on what is distracting you or bothering you! 2. Being mindful helps you slow down your mind and body, which makes you feel more relaxed and at peace.
Practicing Mindfulness To fully understand mindfulness, you have to practice it. Think of yourself as a scientist and mindfulness is the experiment. Study your thoughts, feelings, and mind. Make sure to repeat, since practice makes perfect. When you practice being mindful, you discover things you’ve missed before. You might even discover your happy place! Give it a try!
1. Mindful Breathing
2. Mindful Walks
Get comfy and close your eyes. Now focus in on your breathing. Take a deep and slow breath in through your nose. While you’re taking this breath, imagine yourself smelling fresh baked chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven!
You don’t always have to be sitting still to practice being mindful. You can take a short walk.
Now, slowly breath out through your mouth. Imagine that you are blowing out on a spoonful of hot chicken soup! Repeat at least another 4 times or as many times as you want. If you’re feeling adventurous, imagine something else or some of your favorite things. You can imagine smelling fresh roses from a garden when you breath in and blowing out a candle when you’re breathing out. Remember to take long and slow breaths, that is the most important part. These breaths will relax and sooth you. You can practice slow breathing when you are angry or nervous or want to fall asleep faster. Slow breathing tells your brain that you are ready to relax.
As you walk, pay attention to your breathing. Feel the fresh air come in through your nose and fill up your chest like a balloon. As you breath out, feel your breath leave your mouth like you’re a dragon breathing out fire. As you’re walking, also feel the sun shining against your skin or the wind breeze moving through your hair. Try to use all 5 of your senses. These include what you see, feel, hear, smell, and taste. Look at the area around you. Feel how your feet feel against the ground. Listen to what sounds are around you, are there birds chirping? Try to notice what is happening in that moment while you breath in and then out again. The next time you are paying close attention to what is happening in your body and around you, know that you are being a mindful human.

4 Ultimate
holiday activities! By Pramod Nair
Food, Food, and Food! Winter is the perfect excuse to load up on those carbs. Why not host a pizza party this year with your friends and family! Grab all the fresh ingredients required for pizza making from your local supermarket, make your own delicious homemade pizza sauce, knead the perfect crusty dough with the help of your friends, add in some of those funky toppings and pop it in the oven. It is the ideal family and friends bonding session as everybody gets to challenge their skills in the kitchen and can enjoy a whole lot of fun.
28
Holiday Gift scavenger hunt Game night This holiday season calls for a fun night in with your family. Host a game session or trivia night with your family members. Gather all your favorite board games and set up teams depending on the games. Arrange a scoreboard to keep in track of the scores and forfeits for those who lose the challenge. The fun element is that the finalists of the board games can be a part of a scavenger hunt at home where they have to follow the clues to get a prize.
Joy of giving The ultimate season’s blessing is to give something back to your community. Whether it is one individual or a whole group, join as a volunteer, donate some warm clothes, gift some of your favorite items and spend time with people who genuinely deserve it. This season, help those who are in need. The act of giving is an act of kindness which will be sincerely appreciated.
Pamper Session Winter is also all about pampering yourself; this year assign some time for self-care. Play your favorite music; which can be holiday oriented, grab a cuppa and chat with your friends. Even if it is for a short time, take it as a blessing and appreciate spending time with your loved ones and catch up with them about their whirlwind activities. Ask them what they have been up to the entire year, discuss about the highs and lows of the year; sometimes talking helps. Light up some candles and wear a facemask to pamper your skin. You can even add in a little bit yoga session to relieve all the stress away. ISSUE 46 -KIDZ.BLOG! 29

How to make a homemade
Snow Globe By Ayswarya Rajeevan
Since Christmas is around the corner, a snow globe can make a fantastic gift. A homemade snow globe can be an easy, thoughtful, inexpensive gift and you may already have everything you need at home!
1.Pick a theme. If it’s a Christmas theme, a snowman or pine tree might work. But if it’s for a birthday, try a smaller toy. For a personalized snow globe, try to use a heavily laminated photo of the person.
2. Find a good jar any size can work it doesn’t really matter. Make sure there are no cracks and that it can be closed tightly.
3. Gather your supplies. Most craft stores or general retailers will have the craft equipment if you don’t already have at home. Besides a jar you’ll also need: • • • •
Waterproof craft glue or epoxy Glitter or fake snow Bottled water, which is less likely to cloud up Glycerin or baby oil
4. Position your figurine. You need to first figure out where you want to place your figuring and then remove the lid from your jar to place it. Once you have found the right pose, apply your glue in order to seal the lid to the bottom of the figurine. Then, press the figurine down onto the lid, and let it dry for 24 hours.
5. Fill the jar with water. Fill the jar with boiled water and don’t forget to add glycerine. Glycerin helps your glitter fall down slowly. Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of plastic glitter into the water. Use a spoon to mix well.
6. Seal the lid. Place your lid onto the top of the jar, and seal it. If there’s any extra water, it might leak a little, but that’s okay.
7. Shake your snow globe gently and be proud of your masterpiece.

ANTIBIOTICS AND THE COMMON COLD –
what you need to know
If I had a Dirham for every time I’d been asked why antibiotics are not needed for a child who has a sore throat, runny nose and cough, I would be a rich man.
father of two small children myself I would never under-estimate how difficult it is to see your child under the weather, but the simple fact is that antibiotics do not treat a common cold, or the flu, because they are viral infections.
The simple answer is that 95% of the kids I see with the above symptoms have nothing more than a common cold. That’s not to say they’re not unwell and feeling lousy. As a
Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections.

Antibiotics? YES
Antibiotics? MAYBE
Antibiotics? NO
What is AMR? Since antibiotics were discovered in the 1940s they have saved millions of lives. Illnesses that were once considered life-threatening – pneumonia, strep throat and scarlet fever – are now entirely manageable thanks to antibiotics. But there has been a lot of publicity in recent years about the global problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Put simply AMR means that many of those lifesaving antibiotics are now becoming ineffective because we have developed resistance to them. This has been caused by many years of overprescribing by doctors, often when the antibiotic
38
wasn’t necessary in the first place, and a failure by many patients to complete prescribed courses of the medicine when they were required. As a result, the world is fast running out of antibiotics that work and, in a nutshell, AMR has become one of the biggest threats to global health. If it continues we will soon be in a position where we won’t be able to treat many of the most common bacterial infections with antibiotics and medical procedures such as organ transplants, cancer chemotherapy, diabetes management and major surgery will become very dangerous due to the high risk of infection. These are problems that will affect us all so each and every one of us has a duty to use antibiotics responsibly.
What are the symptoms of a viral infection? The typical symptoms of a viral infection include: • Blocked or runny nose • Sore throat • Headache • Muscle aches • Coughs ‘There many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of • are Sneezing books the temperature best of all.” - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. • isHigh • Pressure / pain in the ears and face (young kids often tug ears) Let’s discuss some of the ways in which you can give a boost to the • Loss of taste and smell
reading habit of your kids and teach them to love books right from a children get ill our parental instinct kick However, in the vast majority of cases, the best very When youngour age. in and we would do anything to make them feel better, including begging our GP to give them antibiotics. But, as we now know that in most cases, this is futile. There are, however some exceptions. For children under the age of two with an ear infection (that may or may not be viral) we would probably err on the side of caution and prescribe antibiotics. This is because a child of that age is not able to tell us where the pain in located and due to the small size of their ear canals it is often difficult to conduct a thorough examination. Children under two also get sicker more quickly so we want to avoid complications such as mastoiditis – when an ear infection spreads to the skull.
advice I can give, if your child has any of the above symptoms, is to stay home and do the following: • Ensure they get plenty of rest and sleep • Keep them warm • Give them plenty of water to drink to avoid dehydration • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen (not given together) to lower temperature (normal is 36.5°C) and ease aches and pains. If your child is not grizzly, lethargic and/or not drinking we often advise not to treat temperature below 39.0 as this is the body’s natural way to fight infection. Remember the symptoms can come on slowly and your child might feel terrible but after a few days they should start to feel better.
When should I see a GP?
It is however important to see a GP if: • Symptoms don’t improve after 3-5 days • Symptoms suddenly get worse • The child’s temperature goes over 39°C or they feel hot and shivery • You are concerned about any of your child’s symptoms • Your child is finding it hard to breathe, breathing quickly or they develop pains/ discomfort in their chest • They have a long-term medical condition – for example, diabetes or a heart, lung, kidney or neurological disease • They have a weakened immune system – for example they have recently received chemotherapy or radiotherapy)

MARIAM FARAG on
ASPIRATIONS & By Anamika Sunil
Mariam Farag is a mother, a humanitarian and a girl boss; her journey in both her career and personal life is genuinely enlightening and remarkable. At a young age, she did have her setbacks, but strongly holds on to believe that we are all born for a reason. With her perseverance and motivation to learn more and educate further, this UN humanitarian and Corporate social responsibility head of MBC wants each of us to strive for the impossible. Currently, creating a documentary produced by herself, under the title ‘Believe In Yourself,’ Mariam is fixated to document stories of 9 kids revealing about their dreams and aspirations among societies. We conversed with this incredible woman about motherhood, livelihood, and aspirations as she unravels about her positive outlook on life.

1. As a mother what is the driving force that makes your work so multifaceted? Honestly, it’s my kids because when I look at them, I realize they have a better chance than others because they have me. I try as much as I can to inspire and support them to reach their dreams and their potential and to not settle for less than what they can aspire to be. But I am only one person trying to inspire two kids, now what drives me is that I can inspire millions of other kids, not all parents are supportive of aspirations, which affects their selfesteem. Which leads to an individual that does not feel that they have the caliber or skills to succeed. However now we need young global leaders to reshape and reform old agendas and to consider humanity. We need them to drive their business agenda for profit as well as for non-profit issues. What can we do for humanity, sustainability, and social impact. Currently, youth, in general, is the most significant focus they are the flavor of the month, the problem is that we tend to make a big mistake, we tell what to say, how to feel, and we tell them what they need instead of listening.
kids about the negative actions in this world? You need to open a conversation and ask them why this is a good or bad action. But you know what, are they not going to make an error again? Of course, and it is okay as long as they are genuine from their heart they will eventually get it. Also a lot of cyberbullying out there in this age, and schools are trying to combat it, but I urge all parents to talk to their kids about the enormous repercussions about cyberbullying. Social media is extremely powerful, we as adults need to be extremely careful about what we post, we never know who reads this, how they interpret and or use it. We can’t teach something
role in shaping better minds. Last year my eight-year-old received an award for me being kind which meant a lot for my husband and me. Ignore math and science but for being kind and befriending a kid who was left out in a class. My eldest is sympathetic, he feels for others, and it touches my heart, like yesterday we came across a janitor I knew, my son told me that he wishes eve-ryone was equal and that means a lot. I wish parents focused more on humanity rather than academics; academia will always be there but make sure that they are good human beings. 5. Can you talk about a person that influences and dwell on why? I look up to my mother; she was divorced in 1970 twice, she didn’t care, everyone kept telling her that it is a taboo and no one is going to accept it in that conserva-tive world. My mother didn’t have a stable job, a steady income but you can imagine the stress being the head of the house and the only breadwinner, for three children, but my mother made it look so simple.
‘‘I dream of a world where people are thinking of how they can be
collectively good together instead of individually becoming great.’’
So I try as much as I can at home to do a lot of listening and have a down to earth discus-sion, I don’t like to lecture my kids, I try to level with them. We have to learn from our an-cestor’s mistakes. In a nutshell, what drives me is that, I dream of a world where people are thinking of how they can be collectively good together instead of individually becoming great. 2. How do we communicate with our
and do something else because what model am I setting for a child?. 3.Can you touch upon something you have learned from your kids that inspired you? My little one is 8, and eldest is 1. When I was 8 and 11, I was not thinking about the things that they are thinking about currently. They are so savvy; they teach me how to do things, and are wellrounded kids not just physically but mentally as well. They are aware about world issues, well read and informed. Let alone they are involved and doing well in all the-se extracurricular and academic activities but leave all this aside what inspires me that they are kind and good human beings. I must admit that their school plays a huge
She worked 24- 48 hours. She is 70 now and she still always keeps herself busy with work. I grew up looking up to her, always active, happy, energized and confident. She told me one thing nothing is impossible you dream If you work hard on it, you will make it, and she as a live example for my two brothers and me. My mom dreamt it, created her busi-ness and raised three of us and it is still mindblowing how she did that, and she’s my role model she went against all the taboos and believed in herself, and she made it. I wish that every single mother out there like her should empower, be strong and be-lieve in themselves.

Blueberry French Toast • • • • • • • • • • • •
YOU WILL NEED
Six large eggs 2 cups milk 1/3 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar One teaspoon pure vanilla extract One teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon salt Ten slices day-old brioche (about 3/4 inch thick) 1/4 cup walnuts, roughly chopped 2 cups blueberries Two tablespoons pineapple juice
METHOD •
Firstly, whip up eggs in a bowl. Add in milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt.
•
Working in bunches, dip ten slices of day-old brioche into the batter to coat. Place the brioche slices in a baking dish, sprinkle both blueberries and walnuts throughout. Pour remaining batter. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
•
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Ensure to bake until the top is golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes more.
•
Serve with warm syrup and whipped cream.
GARNISH

•
Maple syrup
•
Whipped Cream
Easy Pavlova Makes one large or 4 small
METHOD •
Preheat oven to 275 F, sift sugar and cornstarch. Mix the whites and salt for 1-2 minutes on low, or until frothy. Go up to medium-high, gently adding in the dry ingredients. Once the meringue is glossy and forming soft peaks (anywhere from 4-10 minutes, depending on your mixer), finish on high speed and add the vanilla.
•
Spoon the meringue onto a piece of parchment paper, and spread, so it forms a 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick layer (thicker for larger pavlovas), and then add more meringue around the edge, creating a border of little peaks. It should be anywhere from 1-3 inches high, depending on how high your pavlova is.
•
Pop in the oven and bake for 50-60 minutes for small pavlovas, and 80-90 minutes for large pavlova. It should be a slight beigy-pink and NOT toasted. Turn off the heat and crack the oven open. Let the pavlovas cook to room temperature and remove (this is to prevent cracks and to prepare it through). You want it crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
•
Make this just before serving since the whipping cream will dissolve the meringue over time. Combine garnishing ingredients, and sprinkle on top.
YOU WILL NEED • • • • •

1/2 Cup superfine sugar 1 1/4 Teaspoon cornstarch Two egg whites Pinch of salt 1/2 Teaspoon pure vanilla extract

GARNISH •
Sour cream
METHOD
44
•
Preheat oven to 425F. Drizzle the butternut squash and pumpkin pieces with olive oil and sprinkle with pepper on a roasting pan. Chuck them into the oven and roast for about 45 minutes, or until soft and tender.
•
Over medium heat in a large pot, cook onion and garlic until golden brown. Add in celery and carrot and cook for 5 minutes. Add a little salt and pepper. Add the chicken broth, parsley, chili flake, and bay leaf, bring to a simmer for 10 minutes or so.
•
Scoop out the centers of the butternut and pumpkin squashes. Pluck out the bay leaf and parsley and add the squash to the soup. Let it all simmer together for about 10 minutes. Puree the soup in a blender. Put it back in the pot and adjust the seasoning according to taste. Melt butter until it froths and pour it into the soup and stir. Garnish with pumpkin seeds, sour cream, and tangy feta cheese.
•
To brown the butter, place the unsalted butter (salted butter will burn) in a small saucepan over medium heat. Let it melt and bubble until it froths up a bit and the white milk solids have turned a nutty golden brown. Immediately add to the soup and stir.
