3D Printing, which lets you create three dimensional objects that you can hold in your hand, is a technology that can resemble magic. Instead of printing two dimensional images on paper or similar surfaces like the traditional printing methods, this is a printing process which lets you create 3D objects in the real world by giving shape to ideas in your mind with the help of a computer modelling program and a three dimensional printer. In this article we are going to take a look at the basics of the magic called 3D printing, and how solid three dimensional objects are created using this process. The basics of 3D printing
In 3D printing, a three dimensional object is created using an additive process. This is a method in which layer upon layer of material is laid down successively by a printer according to pre-defined patterns to give shape to solid three dimensional objects. The printer used for this purpose is a specially designed printing device, which can interpret three dimensional models built using a computer software, and which then can build a 3D object layer by layer based on the model of the desired 3D object. In most of the basic 3D printers, a form of plastic is used as the material for creating the three dimensional object. Like conventional printers, which depend on cartridges of ink for printing, the 3D printers are fed with coils of plastic thread called filaments. This specially designed printer has two important sections called a print head with its small nozzle, which actually lays the layer upon layer of the material, and a print bed, on which the 3D object gets created. 18
The print head, also called the 3D printer extruder, is made up of a nozzle, a heater and a motor for feeding the hot filament through the nozzle. The print bed is the flat surface on which the 3D object remains while it is getting printed or created. The instructions for creating the 3D object, which is usually developed using a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software or a 3D scanner, are given to the printer either using a computer connected to the printer or through a memory card. Once the printing process starts, the filament is fed to the print head, where a heater melts it and the hot molten plastic is fed through the nozzle to create fine threads as small as 0.2 mm wide. The flow of the molten plastic through the nozzle is controlled as per the computer instructions and the print head – in some models of printers even the print bed – is moved back and forth, by computer controlled motors, while the molten plastic is laid down layer upon layer – the molten plastic cools and hardens once it is out of the nozzle - to create the 3D object. The process resembles the art of drawing and it is as if the print head is actually drawing the object out of thin air using the three dimensional space as a canvas, the molten plastic as the paint and the nozzle as the brush. The three dimensional object, which is printed with the molten plastic is made from bottom upwards as the printer builds layer upon layer of the plastic material with each pass of the printer head. Large 3D models are made up of hundreds of layers of print material.
Some common materials used in 3D printing
In three dimensional printing, a variety of materials are used for giving shape to the 3D model in real life. The most popular materials is PLA (Polylactic acid), a
biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic made from corn starch, cassava roots or sugar cane, which is available in a variety of colors and is safe to use. In professional 3D printing a type of light-activated resin, which is a smooth and translucent material, is used. A laser light is used in such printers for solidifying the liquid resin. In 3D printing projects that require full color printing of life like three dimensional models, minerals called gypsum, mixed with a special glue is used as the printing material. The process of 3D printing, which is mainly used for rapid prototyping in the manufacturing industries and for creating small, recreational 3D models is thought to take over the whole procedure of commercial manufacturing in the near future. With the advent of technology and advancements in the three dimensional printing industry, 3D printers are thought to revolutionize the process of manufacturing. ISSUE 47 - KIDZ.BLOG! 19

By Reem Ebrahim, Year 7 student.
I left school at 12:30 PM in the afternoon for a charity trip I was taking with my mother. Off we were to the remote areas of Pakistan to visit ten schools for underprivileged children. We headed straight for the vast, colossal Dubai International Airport to start our journey to Karachi. We checked in and ventured forth onto the airplane. Luckily we got four seats all to our ourselves, so we could stretch our bodies and relax.
KARACHI
When we landed in Karachi, we went directly to my uncles’ house. The city was very different to Dubai. Some of the differences I noticed were: there
was a lot more poverty, it did not have the same level of hygiene and there were a lot more people. The roads were bustling and very alive, there were lots of people selling things and talking. When we arrived at my uncles’ house, my grandfather was already there. He introduced me to all my cousin; we chatted and ate dinner. We woke up at 3:30 AM that very night to take another flight to Islamabad (Pakistan's’ capital city) which is where our trip began. The airport in Islamabad was very beautifully decorated with truck art. I met the other people that were accompanying us on the trip. Among them were my auntie, four relatives, and all the academic managers of the schools. The flight from Islamabad to Skardu
Me receiving flowers from one of the USWA school students
had a breathtaking view. It was a forty five-minute flight and probably the best I have ever taken in my life; since we were flying through the mountains. There were crystal clear rivers, tall, towering cliffs and the ground was a shade of brown and red.
SKARDU
We conveyed straight from the airport to the first of ten schools we were going to visit on the trip. The USWA schools were started by a kind man in Pakistan and 10 of these schools have been taken over by the Friends Of Education and Medical Trust – this is the organization with whom we were traveling with and my grandfather was a part of. The schools are spread out into three areas of Pakistan namely, Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu. It was intriguing to see how differently these children led their lives compared to children in Dubai and other parts of the world. I noticed that they walked to and from school, whereas most kids in Dubai have people pick them up from school in a car or they take the bus. The WIFI is extremely unreliable because there are not a lot of cell towers, while in Dubai it always works. In the schools, the children have state of the art computer labs ISSUE 47 - KIDZ.BLOG! 23
"The girls were treating my mother like their own because they did not have one..."
and they program from scratch. I saw them making their own games and playing them. A couple miles away there was a girls’ orphanage, which was to be our next stop. When a mother becomes a widow and then gets remarried, it’s in their culture to leave the daughter in an orphanage, as they are not accepted by their new husbandbecause they cannot afford it. The girls were treating my mother like their own because they did not have one. They were very surprised to see us there and they were very sad when we left because they did not always get visitors. Visiting the orphanage made me feel sorry for them because they did not have mothers and that would be hard. However, it also made me feel cheerful because they got to have visitors and they had fun. Snow capped mountains in Skardu
My favorite picture-a small waterfall in between rocks-this was taken from the bus on the way to Hunza

Beautiful backdrop at a coffee shop on the way to Hunza.
HUNZA
After staying in Skardu for couple of days, we were on our way to a place called Hunza, which by the way is about 11 hours away from Skardu by bus, which was exactly the mode of transportation we were taking. We left our hotel at 9 AM and then stopped at another school after 2 hours. I spent most of the journey reading and listening to music. At one point, I got really car sick. Luckily, we were talking a break then. Once my relatives who had gone on an earlier trip got stuck in a rainstorm during this road trip and they had to find a hotel to stay in. The view took everybody’s breath away, it was magnificent. The mountains towered tall above us and the lush green trees below us. The river was a dazzling blue. The bus ride went pretty fast, I thought it would feel longer. We arrived in Hunza and unpacked. Off we went to a few more schools, where we observed their way of teaching, it was just like ordinary schools, but they were teaching in a different language than what most people in Dubai were used to. I noticed that the donors not only gave money but also their time and effort, this is important because most people give the money to charity and feel like they have done it all. But real charity is about getting involved and helping with the work. Believe it or not even some of the principals came with us to see the different teaching methods around the province. This is important and encourages the sharing of best practices. In conclusion I thought the trip was very educational and taught me a lot about a lifestyle I was not used to. I hope by reading this story, I will make people aware of what is going on around the world, and how people work so hard to just get an education. This trip has also made me very grateful for what I have as I have seen the difficulties some people go through.
Hunza people having enjoyable time

THE TREE OF LIFE IN
AFRICA By Pramod Nair
‘‘Wisdom is like a Baobab tree; no single individual can embrace it’’ A proverb from Ghana.
When we talk about trees, the visual that comes to our mind is of a tall living organism with a single slender trunk and verdant, spreading branches. But not all trees on our planet fits this description. There are odd looking trees that can amaze us with their shape, size and survival adaptations. The Baobab of Africa, with its enormously swollen bulbous trunk and its numerous short, disheveled and stubby limbs, is one of the oddest looking tree on Earth. There are nine species of baobabs, of which six are found in the dry regions of Madagascar, two in mainland Africa and one in Australia. The Adansonia digitata is the most prevalent species of the baobabs, and it is native to the dry, hot savannahs of the African continent. The barrel like trunks of the African baobab are massive and can often reach diameters in excess of 30 feet and can grow to heights of more than 60 feet. Apart from the African mainland, this specie of the baobab is found also in Oman and Yemen in the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Asia. These extraordinarily shaped, unusually long-lived trees play a vital role in maintaining life in the arid conditions in which it is found, by 26
providing food, water and shelter to a variety of organisms. The African baobabs are natural water reservoirs capable of storing immense quantities of water, often in excess of 100,000 litres, within its bottle like trunk. This capability of the tree helps it in utilizing the infrequent rains of the savannah to the maximum and in surviving the long dry season. The giant bulging trunk of the baobab with its spongy, fleshy wood and fibrous tissue is the perfect adaptation for water conservation in the dry condition in which the baobabs live. They have short stumpy widespread roots, which assist them in adapting to the dry conditions by absorbing maximum moisture from the surface of the earth.
They have white, hibiscus like flowers, which ripens into an elongated, gourd like fruit with a tasty, citrusy pulp and many seeds. This pulp is used as a food item and is consumed fresh or powdered. The juice of the fruit is used to make beverages. The baobabs can grow to a great age and are believed to live for more than a 1000 years. They are deciduous in nature and shed their leaves during the dry season. These leaves will grow back only when the rain returns and for this reason, the baobabs remains visibly dead or dormant for most of the year.

The Tree of Life
The baobab is considered as the tree of life in Africa because both humans and a variety of animals depend on this wonderful tree for their survival. The bark of the tree is used in various medicines and in weaving ropes and cloths. The fruit of the tree is used both as a food item and as a medicine. It is also considered as a health supplement as the baobab fruit is a good source of Vitamin C, Potassium and carbohydrates. Old baobabs, with enormous trunks, are hollowed out and are used as accommodation by both humans and animals. As the hollowed out insides of the baobab can act as water tanks and as storage for provisions, they are often excavated to serve as water
reserves and as shelters. Elephants attack baobab trunks with their tusk to gain access to the water stored within the fleshy tissue. It is also used as a home by many small mammals, bats and birds. The bats, which feed on the sugary nectar of the baobab flowers, are believed to play a major role in the pollination of the flowers.
The baobab in African folktales
The baobab is steeped in superstitions and myths and is a part of many African legends. Several African tribes believe that the baobab is the home of night spirits . The odd shape of the tree, especially the upside down look of the tree, is a main theme for many folklore. The spriggy branches of the baobab, which resemble roots, does give the tree an impression as if it is planted upside down. According to an African legend, the baobab was a jealous tree and was dissatisfied with its own beauty. The God, seeing this envious attitude of baobab, turned it upside down. According to another African legend, it was the hyena, who planted the tree upside down. The baobab is also a part of many African proverbs. In one proverb from Ghana, the colossal girth of the trunk of the baobab is used as a symbolic representation of the enormity of all the human wisdom, which is beyond the embrace of a single individual.

RAISI N G AN EARTH FRI EN DLY GEN ERATI O N Educate your children on the beauty and fragility of Mother Earth. by Alana Sorokin, Founder of Joseph & Alexander www.josephandalexander.com
The best earth-friendly practices require the cooperation of everyone. So, how do we get the next generation to reduce, reuse, recycle and embrace the other basics of environmental responsibility? As with most good habits, the best way to teach them is to be a good role model yourself. By showing that you care about and respect the environment, the next generation will do the same. So whether you are a die-hard recycler who shops with canvas bags and keeps a compost bin, or a busy parent looking for some quick ideas, look no further than these five tips to guide the next generation to greener living.
Recycle Recycling is important in today’s world if we want to leave this planet for our future generations. Recycling begins at home and we must reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycling is easy, and in some communities, mandatory. Check with your local recycling office and be sure you know all the rules. Kids can sort (and rinse, if necessary) items, place them in the correct bins, and take the containers out to the curb for collection. After the bins have been emptied, ask your kids to rinse them out (if they're dirty) and bring them back into the house or garage.

Get involved in community work Our beaches are the bridge between our world and the ocean. Beaches are fragile environments and we must be attentive in how we treat these stretches of land. The sand and surf are far more than a place to build sand castles and take a dive. With this in mind, many communities sponsor green activities, like pitching in to help clean up a local beach.
Wear sustainable fashion brands Sustainable fashion shouldn’t be confined to adults. Reportedly topped only by oil, the fashion industry is contributing to major environmental destruction – mainly because consumers insist on buying so many clothes at such cheap prices. Alternatives do exist. The solution lies in buying less and choosing better quality items that are made as ethically as possible. If we’re going to make an impact on our future generations it makes sense that their wardrobes consist of fair fashion too. The good news is there are plenty of brands making inroads in the sustainable space for little ones, and they’re very cute and affordable! Quirky, sustainable, durable, and laced with imagination, Joseph & Alexander is the perfect example of fashion with a conscious. Specializing in swim shorts, Joseph & Alexander's environmentally conscious pieces are designed to inspire the imagination and provoke curiosity. With each piece designed to spark an "educational conversation", critical world issues and championing environmental action are at the heart of the brand. Operating consciously using recycled fabric from ocean plastics, eco-friendly ink, and reusable packaging, each collection depicts awareness-raising narratives of minimizing our environmental footprint and having fun whilst doing so.
ISSUE 47 - KIDZ.BLOG! 37
Be kind to the sea life Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. To limit impact ask children to carry a reusable water bottle, and store their food in nondisposable containers, and of course, recycle whenever possible.
Teach respect for the outdoors What happens to children when they encounter trees and greenery? When they go for a brief nature walk, learn lessons outdoors, observe wildlife, or simply relax in nature? Such experiences can be exhilarating, fun and inspirational. For the next generation, they are an essential part of life if we want them to protect Earth for the generation after them. There’s no reason why young children can’t learn to respect and cherish the environment, simply by developing a relationship with the nature that surrounds them. Younger children have the capacity to learn about the earth and to begin to cherish it, which will make more complex lessons even more teachable in the future. 38

High-intensity sports and play can cause fractures in children Forearm fractures are responsible for up to 50% of all fractures in children In an age that is dominated by screens and video games, parents generally encourage children to play outdoors to build upper body strength, balance, and resilience. However, engaging in vigorous physical activities may lead to fall which can break a bone. Broken bones or fractures are common in childhood, with up to 40% of girls and as many as 50% of boys experiencing a fracture.
42
“Injuries caused by sports and high-intensity physical play are the common factors that lead to a fracture. Basketball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey, and football are some of the common sports that can cause injuries. In the past five years, there have been several forms of play and sportrelated emergencies at Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery, with most of them falling under the 5-9-year-old age group,” said Dr. Arkan Harb Alhuneiti, Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic & Spine Surgeon - Specialising in Paediatric Spine, Hip Surgery and Limb Lengthening at Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery (BHAS). Dr. Arkan is an MBBS, Jordan Board Certified specialist, holding a Fellowship from Canada and an American Fellowship in Spine Research from Europe Spine Surgery. Specializing in paediatric orthopaedic, Dr. Arkan has a huge experience in the diagnosis and treatment of all orthopaedic cases. He has worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Jordan and Saudi Arabia and has performed over 1000 surgeries. “Fractures in children are caused when more force is applied to the bone than the bone can absorb. Breaks in bones can occur from falls, trauma, or as a result of a direct blow or kick to the body. As a child’s bone heals faster than an adult’s bone, healing occurs faster. It is however recommended to treat a fracture correctly to make sure children don’t run into problems down the road,” added Dr. Arkan. Forearm fractures are the most common fractures in children, responsible for up to 50% of all fractures, and are much more
common than leg fractures. Other common fracture locations include the distal radius, elbow, clavicle, and tibial shaft. While each child may experience a fracture differently, the most common symptoms are pain and swelling in the injured area, deformity in and warmth, bruising, or redness in the injured area. Fractures in children can heal well if the child is young and doesn’t have a medical history. But, since young bones are fragile and are still growing, a fracture can cause problems as the child develops. This is because some fractures require surgery to stabilize growing bones, while others can be treated with immobilization or casting.
