‘It’s better to know First Aid and not need it, than to need it and not know it" Would you know what to do if your child had an accident? We all know how important it is to keep little ones safe, but, accidents can happen. We came across Daisy First Aid at the Baby to Toddler event and instantly felt we needed to share more about this subject with you all, as basic first aid is something we could all benefit from knowing. Furthermore, there are also business opportunities for Mum’s looking for a new career or to provide a very rewarding service to others. Here’s the background behind how it all started and some more information

www.daisyfirstaid.com 6

kidzootd.com

Daisy First Aid was set up by mum of 3 Jenni Dunman, she was a police officer who helped her friends child who was choking , she realised there was a real need for parents to have First Aid classes available which covered the 'need to know' topics when caring for children and thus, Daisy First Aid was born. Jenni started running 2 hour classes specifically for parents and child carers. Classes take place in your own home or local venues where attendees learn skills needed to save a life or treat the most common accidents and emergencies. These classes cover everything from CPR, recovery positions, febrile seizures, cuts and burns and include things like recognising and treating symptoms of meningitis. Daisy First Aid now has almost 90 area's throughout the UK offering classes. There are also amazing opportunities for anyone looking for a new career as Daisy First Aid are still growing in certain parts of the UK, the West Midlands, Kidzootd Magazine’s hometown being one of those areas. Previous First Aid or teaching experience is preferable, however it's more important that they find people who will bring fun and vibrancy to their classes. Most of the trainers are mum's who work alongside caring for their children and fit the classes around their busy lives.

Daisy First Aid Tips Choking baby under 12 months

What to do 1. Check baby’s mouth for obstructions 2. Lay baby face down on thigh and support head 3. Give up to 5 blows between shoulder blades 4. Check mouth and lay baby face up 4. Use 2 fingers and give up to 5 chest thrust

Talking Twins & Triplets

Q&A

The thought of having twins or triplets is one that intrigues us. How cute would it be for your babies to have a best friend, born on exactly the same day, to grow up with? How adorable would it be to dress them up in matching outfits?! But then, one has to wonder, how do the night feeds work? How do you manage day to day tasks with multiple 2 year olds? As you can see, we have lots of questions! So we thought, why not ask the experts and get the facts. We spoke to four fabulous instagrammers to get the pros and cons of being parents to twins and triplets. Here are their stories

@chantellechamps 1) Before you knew you had been doubly blessed, were there any signs in your pregnancy that made you think you were carrying twins? I suffered terribly with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (extreme sickness) with my eldest daughter and then when I was pregnant with twins I was double as ill which didn’t even seem possible. And I was constantly asked by the midwives if I was having twins. And I also had a small bleed in the early days which is quite common in twin pregnancies. 2) So you already have a daughter, was the pregnancy different when carrying twin girls? Carrying two was just so much more extreme, like I said in question one my HG was double worse, my acid reflux was horrendous and I thought it was bad carrying one baby, and then towards the end I really struggled getting ready, sleeping just normal day to day stuff, I was so tired and exhausted.

6) In 3 words, could you describe each twin as best you can?

3) When someone new meets the twins, what do you say to indicate who is who?

@Jayde_jenson_rocco

Tatum twin 1, has more hair and is slightly bigger, Blakely twin 2 is also slightly fairer. 4) How did you manage the night feeds? Tell us about it... The night feeds were tough, I was breastfeeding (still am now 18 months later) so I didn’t have any help, I also hated tandem feeding so would often feed them singly, unless they were both crying. After I fed one baby, even if the other one was asleep I would wake them up in hopes I would get a little longer in between feeds if they were both on the same schedule. 5) Beat The Myth - "Twin Talk" do the girls ever communicate with each other in a way no one else can understand ? The twins aren’t really saying many words at the moment, but they both babble to each other and then laugh they like they know what the other one is saying. Which is so cute but I hate that I always feel out of the joke haha. 10

kidzootd.com

Tatum - Loud, independent, hilarious. Blakely Sweet, timid, gentle

1) How did you feel when you were told you were expecting twins? Completely shocked and I couldn’t stop giggling. Nervous giggles I think! The sonographer had to tell me to stop moving as she couldn’t finish the scan! My husband was more serious and it took him a few hours to take it all in. 2) Do twins run in the family? Jenson and Rocco are Monochorionic Diamniotic twins, this basically means Identical twins, which are not hereditary. It is completely random and anyone could fall pregnant with identical twins! 3) Are the boys similar at all in personality? I find it hard to describe their personalities but I would say they have weeks where they are more similar and weeks where they switch. They have switched ever since they were born! Jenson is the cheeky one but at the moment can be a little more wary of situations or new things and people.

Rocco currently is the more confident one and warms to people quickly. They are both very loving and gentle. 4) What’s the best advice you can give for parents expecting twins?

Get up & get yourself dressed first thing when the babies are small, that way if you need to get out of the house for a walk and fresh air you’re ready to grab your pram & go! I walked loads when the boys were born.

First of all try and enjoy your pregnancy, I worried my way through mine due to complications but as worrying as a multiple pregnancy can be, do try and embrace it and take lots of pregnancy photos. I was so focused on getting through it, I have hardly any photos of me pregnant which I’d love to look back on now.

1) I remember consuming the whole fridge daily when I was pregnant, so when carrying triplets, did you eat like 9 meals per day!? I had to eat before I could even lift my head off the pillow as the sickness was so immense with triple the hormones, that constantly grazing was the only way I could settle my tummy. But I couldn’t eat big meals as it felt like there was no room! 2) Do the girls all manage to get along, is there ever any teaming up? Watching the relationship develop between these girls right from being premature babies in a hospital cot together, has been the most fascinating experience ever. The affection they show to each other is heartwarming and the headbutts, well, that’s mostly quite comical. 3) Would you say your expectations differed to the reality of having triplets? If so, give us an example.. Lots of my expectations were fulfilled in terms of how challenging it has been at times, but weaning in particular

I haven’t experienced this yet although I do think there could be some truth in this, the bond they have is so so special. If one of mine is poorly or tired or falls over and is hurt the other will be right by his side, hugging him, kissing him. That bond I can only hope will grow with age. 6) We know from your Instagram profile you like to match the boys outfits which we love! How old do you think they will be when you stop doing this?

Routine is key! Find your own way of doing things and what works for you, don’t be pressured or influenced by other Mum’s who only have one baby, it’s completely different and you have to find your own way. Instagram is such a good platform for new mums and I’ve met lots of twin mums on there which is nice as everyone swaps tips and tricks!

@mummy_to_triplets_ and_bro

5) Beat The Myth - It’s said that twins can read each other’s mind, have you experienced this or ever thought this could be true?

I absolutely love the boys matching, I even match their socks! I will dress them differently when they tell me they don’t want to be dressed the same, which I would think is a few years off yet. I think matching is super cute plus it’s easier for washing and putting away for me!

differed to my expectation of how hard it might be. Hands down, weaning is so much easier with triplets! They copy each other and the social element of eating together means they have weaned beautifully. My concerns about not being able to give them enough 1-1 time have also been somewhat placated by their being there for each other, and how they learn patience, so are perhaps not as demanding as a singleton might be. 4) At meal times, do you manage to create all-round winning recipes, or do you find yourself preparing separate meals? I would not make separate meals. We have used baby led weaning with all of our children, so for the most part we eat the same meals. Lots of my expectations were fulfilled in terms of how challenging it has been at times, but weaning in particular differed to my expectation of how hard it might be.

5) So tell us, do you think of yourself as ‘laid back’ when it comes to keeping the girls entertained, or are there certain activities which you secretly avoid when looking after them alone? It depends what mood I’m in! Or how much time I have to clear up the mess. If I’m up for getting in a mess then the paints can come out and we’ll do it together. I try and give them space zones where they can make a mess. Up until recently the house was the place that they made mess, everywhere! But I’m trying to keep our lounge a child free toy zone so that we can relax in there. It’s only taken me 2 years, lol! To a greater extent, you have to be laid back and accepting of mess with multiples else you’d go mad. But I’m starting to reclaim our house now. 6) Are you able to give our tripletexpectant-readers any top money saving tips? Don’t be shy - ask friends for hand me downs. You’ll be amazed at how generous people are. Or join your local multiples online groups, where you can buy from other multiple mummies. And check Tamba for discounts to parents of multiples.

Talking Twins & Triplets @daddy_to_triplet_girls 1) They say two’s company and three’s a crowd?! What’s it like being a dad to not only triplets but 4 children in total? The first thing that comes to mind is there is never a dull moment that’s for sure, I never thought I would have 4 children and I must say I love it, they are everything to my wife and I. Although it does turn your life upside down going from 1 to 4. We took Henry in our stride and our life didn’t change dramatically, he came where we went and he was a very calm baby and everything was very normal in that respect. When the girls came along a firework of nappies, milk, sleepless nights and mayhem exploded in our home. All that aside I love it, I love the cuddles, the bath times, the stories, playing football with my son and just watching them all grow up and feeling a sense of pride and achievement as their dad. 2) How did you manage the girl’s routine when they were newborn? The first 3 weeks they were in hospital, the girls were born by c-section at 34 weeks which is the maximum they will allow triplets to go, Annabella was 3.5lb’s, Florence was 4.7lb’s and Lottie was 2.12lb’s. Mainly due to Lottie’s size and a few minor issues they were all kept in NICU for 3 weeks. Whilst this was hard to swallow although half expected it was a blessing, it allowed the hospital (who were incredible) to put to work a slick, military style feeding, changing, sleeping routine which we were able to learn. My wife was also in hospital for about 10 days with complications so this was also something that was helped by them being in hospital. When we got home we tried to stick to the exact routine in hospital, we had 3 moses basket’s lined up in the lounge for day time, we had them all in one cot in our room and we had to work around the clock to feed, change and bath them which was basically a full time job (including overtime during the night). On top of this Henry was also expecting his usual life to continue of days out, baking cakes and playing with his mum and dad and that’s something we really had to work hard to fit in. I won’t lie it wasn’t easy and it didn’t start smoothly, after a few days of getting home we realised that it wasn’t working and my wife and I literally laid down on the floor and sobbed. We then realised only we could make this work and we could either sink or swim as a family unit so we dusted ourselves down and grabbed the situation by the horns and we haven’t stopped for breath since! 3) Do you think they will grow up sharing similar interests? It’s an interesting question, considering they have all been bought up the same generally, they all like different characters on the TV, they prefer different toys and they have very different personalities. If you had asked me this question before we had them I would have said yes, however I don’t think I’m so sure now. I personally would love it if they had really different and varied interests although it would be handy if they all wanted to go to the same club logistically. I find your children normally develop similar interests to their parents so I’m looking forward to them all playing football or rugby for England. 4) So tell us, do you ever find yourself in a tantrum-timesthree situation? If so, how do you handle it? To be fair the girls are really well behaved most of the time, we have night time meltdowns which can be really difficult as the hardest thing to cope with as triplet parents is the lack of sleep, if you get sleep you can deal with most challenges, they aren’t 2 until April so I fully anticipate the classic supermarket tantrums are round the corner.

12

kidzootd.com

I remember with Henry we used to just try and actually understand what he was going through and why he was frustrated or upset and deal with it as a family so we will probably attempt to adopt that approach. 5) How do you tackle getting about with the kids, do you have any special mod-cons which help you out? Well one thing we pride ourselves on is the fact that from day 1 we said that we would not let having triplets stop us from going out for the day/away/on holiday etc, and that’s exactly what we do. Firstly we decided we wanted all the kids to be safe and together in the car so we got a multi-mac which is basically 4 seats that fits over an existing 3 seats in the back of the car (airplane seat style) and that has been a game changer. We also invested in a radio flyer which is like a wagon with seatbelts and a canopy that we can pull the girls and Henry around. We have had some mishaps though, times where we have bitten off more than we can chew, stuck in mud, out with no food and nappies, caught in thunderstorms in the wagon etc, but we love being outside and together as a family. 6) What’s the best piece of advice you would give to someone expecting triplets? Firstly to try and relax, the car, the equipment, the bundles of clothes are all not the priority, the beginning is normally spent in hospital and there is support and guidance available from there. The first few months are hard but with the right amount of support and help you will get through it, it’s important you unite with your partner and stick together and support one another. Also don’t feel you are alone, there are lots of people on Instagram or support groups that you can speak to and help sharing experiences. I am even happy to chat to people on Instagram if I can help.

FOOD A Mummy Too

@amummytoo

We were lucky enough to get some insight and yummy recipes to share with you all from Emily Leary, award winning food blogger, freelance writer, workshop Facilitator, youtuber and of course, A Mummy Too! So Emily, as you know we adore your blog. Tell us a bit about why you started it? Thank you! I was on maternity leave with my daughter when I set up A Mummy Too in 2011. I wanted to make the most of my time with my son, JD (then 3) before Jay came along, so we were baking together, doing crafts together, going on outings and whatever else we could think of. All the while, I was taking photos to preserve the memories. I set up the blog totally on a whim one night, thinking it would be the perfect place to record our adventures. My approach was to show what we were doing in a how-to style so that other parents could try our ideas,experiences, recipes and crafts for themselves. I didn’t expect many people to read it, but it took off incredibly quickly. I think the fact that I went back to work soon after Jay was born also played a part in its success, as it meant that a lot of the activities and experiences were, by necessity, quick and simple, so they resonated with busy families.

We know you had a busy corporate career before beginning the blog, how do you now find balancing home and work life and what are the differences?

Being your own boss has its own challenges. On the one hand, you’re able to shape your own working hours, so it’s easier to be there for school picks ups, sports day, or trips, but on the other hand, you’re running a business, so there can be a fair amount of travel, late nights and working weekends. It takes discipline to keep that balance, and recognise that some weeks family will need you more, and other weeks, you’ll be nose to the grindstone.

What advice would you give to someone considering making a similar career change? Like any new business venture, you need to be confident that it’s viable before you give up your main income stream. As I said, it was two years before I considered my blog and associated work to offer a stable enough income to justify leaving my corporate career. And if you do make the leap, treat it as a business from the outset. Keep good records, review your readership numbers, communicate promptly, file your receipts, track your income. Blogging is an absolute joy, but if you want to make money from it, you have to be both creative and businessminded.

Being a working parent is a tough balancing act, for sure, but these days it’s something most men and women have to do, so I think it’s just about fair division of responsibility wherever possible. My husband Mark and I have always worked as a team and picked up the slack for each other when needed, whether that’s housework, school pickups, or helping each other with work.I left my corporate job about 2 years after starting the blog, so it’s been my full-time job - alongside presenting, authoring the book and so on - for coming up to 6 years now. Dot to Dot Despite the bad British weather, we took a little trip to London to check out all the brilliant brands showcasing at independent trade show, Dot to Dot London. We were on the lookout to find our favourite brands and reveal our winners here ! Now, as fans of unique and creative fashion, we were looking for brands which create a new buzz to the market and of course, funk up our kids wardrobes. To be honest, we found something special in every brand showcasing on the day, and along with listening to the stories, meeting the people behind the brands and revelling in it all - made for very hard decision making!

Dot To Dot

First stop Room 1 New designers There were two brands in this room whose design concepts we found very appealing.... DRUM ROLL please to Kidzootd Star brands of the day.

Another Fox

Instagram @another.fox Website: www.anotherfox.com

Totem

Instagram @totemkids Website: www.thetotemkids.com

The reason we love both of these unisex brands were for their fabulous Illustration collaborations.

Totem kids, for this collection, teamed with Illustrator Rob Flowers who based designs on his book ‘Festival Folk’.

Each brand teamed up with an artist to create beautiful, meaningful designs that children will love and adults can really appreciate.

The artwork explores the weird yet wonderful ancient festivals from around the world.

Another Fox teamed with designer and Illustrator, Victoria Devey for their SS19 collection. Features include hand drawn bees and leopard designs across tops, dungarees, rompers and bottoms.

Next stop: Room 2 In room two we were surrounded by again so many amazing brands. We featured a few of our highlights from the day on @kidzootd Instagram story and this brand was one the followers in particular seemed to love - along with ourselves of course !

We think both brands are ones to watch so keep up to date with their latest news on the brands Instagram and websites

As media partners, it’s that time again where we get to show our highlights from the fabulous kids fashion show – Mini Mode. During London fashion week Mini Mode brings together designers and models from around the world to hit the catwalk and give us a taste of fashionable kid’s trends up and coming. The creator behind the show Amanda Rabor took on a HUGE 180 mini models who all did a fantastic job. We love the diverse range of models and that the show enables children to build confidence and become little stars for the day! Amongst the brilliant catwalk, there were performances from dancers, actors and teen super singer @lexigib1 who was also presenting the show with @ryhannaparara05 @zerina.zia @zayn.ways and @dennyashison A MASSIVE WELL DONE to all the models, designers and mini mode team! Little People London. One of the brands providing accessories for the Mini Mode show was Little People London. We got the full scope about the brand with owner Lauryn Panton, the brains behind the designs. Using her Son ParyhsMikell as inspiration for design, her focus is creating garments for the cool kids of our generation… Q1) How did you come across Mini Mode fashion show and what made you want to get involved? After relaunching my brand last year I decided to do more research and become more social media active, doing this I noticed a lot of reposts of Mini Mode fashion show and from the images and great feedback I decided I wanted to be a part of it. From there I have followed their journey. I was tagged several times in their posts so decided to apply. And I can honestly say it was a decision I am very happy I went forward with. Q2) Can you explain the name Little People London? It’s simple really, "Little" - it's created for the little people around us "people" - it’s for everyone to love "London" - the city of fashion and multiculture creating the wow factor all over the world. Q3) If you could chose a celebrity kid to rock your brand on the catwalk who would it be and why? Future Zahir - he's toooooo cute. As our main focus is creating a unique fashion brand for kids with an adult level of style, a little cuteness is an addition we love! Q4) Fast forward - what's the 5 year plan for the brand? Our plan is to create the wow factor everywhere we go. We want to see the brand take the catwalk of London fashion week and worldwide year after year. We want continuous purchases worldwide. We also want your little people to wake up wanting to pick out there LPL garments over everything else in their wardrobe. Q5) As an independent shop owner, are there any tips you can share on how to get your brand noticed within the expanding world of kids fashion? Rome wasn't built in a day, it takes hard work and sleepless nights to get to where you want to be. You must find the place inside yourself where nothing is impossible, never give up no matter how hard it gets for you, you have a Goal and you will reach it. Attend those unpaid and low paid events for as long as it helps your business grow. Accept some losses and invest in yourself and your brand to get noticed. Stay up even on those late nights when you want to give up. Keep reading, posting on social media and advertising your brand as much as you can. Most of all, have fun and meet amazing people on your journey - NEVER take short cuts, just stay focused and work as hard as you want the success!
