Instagram really is a top place to find real people sharing their secrets, hacks and tips to inspire and assist us in our daily life. We caught up with Sarah the creator of @mybudgethome who is a lover of interior design, bargain hunting and cleaning tricks.

Q1) With now over 260k followers waiting to see your next Interior makeover or budget buy, please share with us how the Instagram page all started?

When I moved out of my parents house I originally started a page just for a couple of my friends to keep track of the DIY things I made and decorated, I had no idea it would become this big.

Q2) We love how you have revamped rooms in your house such as your kitchen and laundry room. Where do you get your inspiration from?

A lot of inspiration comes from Instagram itself. There are so many other accounts with beautiful homes.

Another place for great inspo is Pinterest. I usually think of or find an idea and then build on top of it until the look is complete.

Q3) One of our favourite interior designs was your daughters bed.

There was a huge saving of over £3,000 by doing it yourself! How did you plan it all?

I found a couple of ideas on Pinterest but no tutorials on how it was made.

I did a lot of research and with my mother, we both planned it out on paper beforehand to make sure everything was safe and correct.

Q4) Not only do you share great interior tips you highlight bargain buys and cleaning tips too! Where are your favourite places to look for home decor to grab a deal?

My favourite shops at the moment are The range, Home bargains and B&M. All of these stores have great but cheap decor and are always up to date and changing with the newest trends.

A messy bedroom. It seems to me that bedroom mess can be tidied up easier, so I pick that.

Q7) Finally do you have any tips to get kids involved with the household chores?

Have a house cleaner or a home chef?

A home chef for sure. Although I love doing both, I like my home being cleaned a certain way whereas I’ll eat any food given to me!

Pack the dishwasher or unload it?

Pack, for sure. This is actually a rule we have at home. I pack it and my partner Justine unloads.

Wallpaper or paint?

Wallpaper, always! Some of the effects you can get with wallpaper simply can’t be made with paint. However I only ever use wallpaper on one wall as a feature.

There are different methods to get your children to help with chores.

Verbal praise works for most but for smaller children things such as a tidy up song”may help. Set a timer with a minute or 2 and see if they can complete the task before it runs out.

Reward charts are also great. Chores written down that can be ticked off are a helpful reminder of what needs doing. For older children earning money for chores may be an incentive.

Another way could be a certain amount of chores per week equals a small treat at the end of the week. Both money and treat rewards don’t have to be big, it could be 10p per chore or a treat such as going out for ice cream.

Shoes off at the door or leave them on?

Shoes off. And I will always offer to remove them in someone else’s home too.

The strangest cleaning tip which I’ve come across is cleaning with lemons.

Have you ever felt like the whole world is staring at your dark circles? Sleep deprivation when children are young has got to be one of the hardest things a parent tackles and one to which many can relate.

Have you ever felt like the whole world is staring at your dark circles? Sleep deprivation when children are young has got to be one of the hardest things a parent tackles and one to which many can relate.

Meet Sarah Patel, founder of Teach To Sleep.

I am a mum of two little ones 18 months apart, I know what were we thinking?! I am a Certified Baby and Toddler Sleep consultant and have over 15 years experience in teaching.

What led me to become a sleep consultant? Well, the 4 month sleep regression which both my babies went through!

My sister in law has four kids who have all naturally slept well right from the onset and I was hopeful that ours would have the same ‘magic sleep genes’ but alas that was not to be the case!

I invested a lot of time and effort into trying to get them to sleep well (I admit I was a little obsessed with their sleep) I’m happy to say that they are now lovers of bedtime and sleep in general!

Each ‘activity’ on the list acts as a cue telling your baby that bedtime is coming. The more you do it the more they will understand what is coming next, allowing them to relax and settle more easily. As soon as I sing “twinkle twinkle little star” to my son he starts to squirm out of my arms and tries to dive into his cot!

Bedtime always takes longer than you think it will, so prepare everything ahead (have the bath run, pyjamas, growbag and milk at the ready) and keep your eye on the clock!

Naps hold the key for good, nighttime sleep.

I am not really a fan of the term “sleep training”, but rather, I use my long standing experience in education to teach children how to have healthy sleep habits.

If your baby is overtired, bedtime will become a battle and they will fight going to sleep . Use age appropriate guidelines to help ensure your baby is getting enough sleep in the daytime. If you get close to bedtime and you realise that they are over tired, bring bedtime forward, they may wake slighter earlier but the chances are there will be less wake ups in the night.

Top Sleeping Tips

One of the most common questions I get asked..

Bedtime Routine is Crucial The bedtime routine is really important because it can help to regulate your baby’s circadian rhythm (AKA body clock) so that they can distinguish between day and night time and develop a regular sleeping pattern. A good bedtime routine helps to prepare your baby for night time by helping the body produce the natural sleep inducing hormone melatonin which helps you to feel sleepy. Melatonin doesn’t act as a switch but helps your baby unwind from the day and to start to feel sleepy.

The bedtime routine should take |around 30 minutes and most importantly shouldn’t be any longer because otherwise it loses momentum and purpose. It might look something like this:

We wouldn’t expect children to learn how to read or use the toilet without our support, patience and help; learning to fall asleep is just the same.

Hopefully my top tips will help you to develop healthy sleep habits for your little one. But if you are in a sleep rut: 1. I really do feel for you, I have been there and it is TOUGH!

2. Sometimes it is just a short phase and it will right itself in time. If it doesn’t then please do get in touch.

How can I help my baby settle to sleep?

This skill can take a little time for babies to learn and often they need lots of help to fall asleep. Try putting your hand on their tummy or cupping their head until you see them begin to settle and drift off.

Rocking or patting their bottom can often help, and no its not creating a rod for your back!

They need help to fall asleep, it is a difficult skill to learn.

Kidz OOTD Article: Mini Tooth Care Tips with @themummydentist Meet Jemma, an NHS family dentist and clinical teacher in Paediatric Dentistry. Jemma started @themummydentist whilst on maternity leave after realising first hand that tooth care for little ones can be confusing and that finding practical guidance is difficult.

Here’s Jemma’s top advice on tooth care for your little ones.

The average time for the first tooth to appear is around 6 months (it can vary by a few months) and in total there are 20 in a set of ‘milk’ teeth. Tooth decay is largely preventable but one survey found that in England 12% of children had decay by the time they were 3 years old! Baby teeth have many important functions including chewing and maintaining space for adult teeth. So looking after young babies’ teeth from the start is key.

Toothbrushing: Start brushing twice a day as soon as the first tooth comes through. Building this habit into daily routine from the beginning is easiest for both you & your little one.

This has many benefits to protect teeth and promote a ‘sipping’ action which is great for jaw and oro-facial muscles development. It also aids a baby’s dexterity and fine motor skills.

Visiting the dentist: The British Society for Paediatric Dentistry encourages parents to take baby along for a dental checkup appointment before their 1st Birthday. This coincides nicely with your NHS maternity exemption certificate. Coming along to your family dentist provides the opportunity to: ✔ • Acclimatise - going from an early age builds familiarity.

• Advise - we can offer tailored tips regarding teething, toothbrushing & dietary habits.

Cleaning before bed is the most important time.

Use a flat smear of fluoridated toothpaste - for ages 0-3 it should contain no less than 1000ppm of fluoride (this will be clear on the packaging) Don’t worry if brushing seems tricky initially, young babies may instinctively chew on the brush as they get used to a new texture.

You’re just aiming to clean the teeth with a gentle side-toside action.

A good position for brushing is to have bubba sat facing forwards on your lap and leaning them back into your chest.

Or you can try whilst they are sat up supported in the bath – a great bit of multitasking!

Food & Drink habits: Frequent sugar consumption is the main cause of tooth decay. Certain oral bacteria digest sugary foods and this process produces acid. The acid then dissolves (or demineralises) tooth surfaces - if this happens repeatedly over time it can lead to cavities.

During a baby’s weaning journey the advice is to introduce vegetables and more ‘bitter’ flavours such as green veg first.

Ensure you check the labels on infant food products carefully as some may contain high amounts of sugar, especially if they are fruit based.

Babies should only drink their usual milk (breast or formula) and from 6 months they can be given plain water as well.

Fruit flavoured water or juice drinks are not suitable as they can easily damage baby tooth enamel.

Introduce drinking from an open cup at 6 months too.

Stories at bedtime can be a perfect end to the day with your child, but also a chance to explore and discuss all sorts of feelings and situations.

I have. And like many of you, I try my best to explain to my boys that they can do anything they put their minds to, that they are perfect just the way they are, and that they may look different to somebody else simply because no two of us are the same. These innocent and common questions can feel difficult to answer.

We all want our children to feel inspired to follow their dreams and with careful thought given to the books we choose for them, we can help do just that.

We live in an extremely diverse world and yet many of us still struggle to find our own children reflected in the characters of books which are most widely available.

Story books can be the ideal space to learn, explore and introduce children to people, cultures and ways of life which they may be unaware of.
