Dale Nichols was the fourth regionalist following the triumvirate of Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry. All four painted enduring scenes of rural areas, celebrating the values and strengthening the morale of America’s heartland. Nichols’ story is one of resolute pride and support for the Midwest, particularly his home state of Nebraska, but was also one of exploration and adventure to far off lands and ideas. Nichols upheld the regionalist voice while he transcended the regionalist genre. From Amanda Mobley Guenther Transcending Regionalism

126 THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) Still Life with Vase and Fruit, 1923, Oil on canvas, 22 x 18 inches, Signed LR, Dated on verso, Price on request This painting documents a fascinating moment in the career of Benton who was in the process of evolving from a cutting-edge Modernist, and coinventor of the Synchromist movement, to a painter of American life movement which eventually became known as Regionalism. This highly sculptural still life possesses the rich coloration typical of Benton’s work from the 1920s. The painting’s assertive solidity, with little if any textural differentiation between materials of fabric, ceramic, fruit and wooden table top, is a special characteristic of Benton’s oils of this period. This unusual property stems from the fact that during the middle years of the 1920s, Benton was an aspiring muralist. To that end he began making clay models as a preliminary stage in his compositional planning process, particularly as a way of working out the spatial relationships between and among objects. He also applied this process to easel paintings such as the present still life. From Professor Henry Adams of Case Western Reserve University

Verso detail: Martha’s vineyard - Inscription upper right “Shown in 1928 / Alone year” 133 THOMAS HART BENTON Study for History of New York 1886: Civil War (Untitled House on hill on verso), 1928, Grisaille on board, 14 x 8 1/4 inches, Price on request The four paintings of this mural series portray the history of New York from before the European discovery to the present time. In keeping with his desire to produce a true “people’s history,” throughout the series, Benton focused on ordinary citizens rather than great men. Benton’s panel Civil War portrays not the war and its battles but enthusiastic Union troops, surely newly enlisted, marching in parade, enthusiastically applauded by waving spectators on the sidewalk behind them, and by men and women looking down from a balcony. Benton’s approach was remarkably systematic, and it’s interesting that he made compositional studies both in grisaille and in color. The little study of a barn on the verso makes it clear that Benton executed this painting on Martha’s Vineyard. I’m not able to identify this building with certainty but it may well be the barn owned by Ella Brug where Benton and Thomas Craven lived and slept during their early years on Martha’s Vineyard. From Professor Henry Adams of Case Western Reserve University
