American Regionalists above Cowboy at the Well, Thomas Hart Benton, 1946, Oil, 7.00 x 7.00 inches

This painting is a preliminary study for Open Country, painted in 1952, which is in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. I believe that the imagery of these paintings was inspired by a trip that Benton took through the plains country of Nebraska, the Dakotas, Eastern Wyoming and Montana. This painting is rather extraordinary in its detail and its evocation of the brilliant colors and clear atmosphere of the American west. It has all the qualities of the final painting but on a smaller scale. - Dr. Henry Adams, Ruth Coulter Heede Professor of Art History Contact Kiechel Fine Art for full letter & details.

The verso of the panel is a grisaille study for another well-known painting by Benton, View of Menemsha, 1954, which was commissioned from Benton by David Mavity who had homes in Martha’s Vineyard and Greenwich, CT. American Regionalists

above & front cover The Young Artist (Self Portrait of Grant Wood) Grant Wood, c. 1926, Oil on panel, 11.00 x 14.00 inches

This is a particularly wonderful example of Wood’s early work, notable for the authority and freshness of its skilled brushwork, its impressively well-conceived composition, and its unusually interesting subject. Grant Wood constructed a home for himself, his mother, and his sister in Kenwood Park, which was then an independent township and was later absorbed into the city of Cedar Rapids. Kenwood Hill, the location of this painting, is quite nearby this residence. Kenwood Hill overlooks the Cedar River, whose curve is visible just above the head of the ‘young artist.’ Wood made other plein air paintings in this period which show the river and the river valley from various angles. In short, the subject matter of this painting fits very neatly with Wood’s other landscape work of this period. Fine debris trapped in the paint makes it clear that this painting was executed outdoors. It was done directly in ‘alla prima’ technique directly on the board surface. The current frame is clearly the original frame, selected by Grant Wood. - Dr. Henry Adams Contact Kiechel Fine Art for full letter & details.
