P I L L A R S Dear Friends of Catholic Education:

O

ne of the greatest gifts that this moment in our Catholic school history brings is the gift of opportunity. As we continue to reinvent ourselves here in

the Diocese of Syracuse in unison with other dioceses across the northeast that have experienced enrollment challenges, it is increasingly clear that what is needed is bold thinking, new models of planning and innovative solutions to difficult questions. I am proud to say that we are doing just that here in Central New York. This fall edition of “Pillars” magazine presents the Second Annual Catholic

“…we have begun to think about our Catholic schools differently as we plan for the future.” — CHRISTOPHER MOMINEY

Schools Report for the Diocese of Syracuse. It is my sincere hope that this document will serve as a source of conversation and planning as we think boldly about the future of Catholic education in the Diocese of Syracuse. Our first report, published last fall, sparked a great deal of interest in our schools and allowed for us to begin substantive planning processes in the regions of our diocese. Since then, we have become more intentional about our need for strong local boards, sound fiscal planning and increased focus on school advancement opportunities. In short, we have begun to think about our Catholic schools differently as we plan for the future. My colleagues in the diocese will tell you that I am fond of saying: “None of the resources that we have are our own. Our parents have invested. Our parishes have invested. And, our alumni have invested.” This report is meant for our “investors” — those who support the very important mission of Catholic education. It is my sincere hope that everyone who reviews this document will see that we are making progress in so many key areas. Still, more work must be done, and we are poised to make the changes necessary to continue on the path of improvement. We are proud of our schools and what we have accomplished in the 20102011 school year. As you review this report, I hope that you will continue to prayerfully support our schools, our young people and the Church of Syracuse. Peace and all good things,

Christopher Mominey Superintendent of Schools Note: All data contained in this report is from the 2010-2011 school year. 2
