TERMINAL CENTRE; MAMBRUI, LAMU KENYA
In this case of warm humid climate, building principles employed are open plan design of site planning and spaces, raising the building above ground to allow for air movement, orientation of buildings to capture indirect wind and sun and use of locally available heavy materials to cater for heat gain. Sustainable Design and Capacity Building. The Terminal Centre has been designed to use local materials i.e. coral blocks and lime binding bond coral stone, timber and corrugated iron sheets which leads to capacity building within the economy. Office spaces have been fitted with malcafs which aid in thermal comfort and cross ventlation. The mvule timber casement windows have large glass panes for maximum light but are shaded form glare through a detail window with louvre system. The rooms are mostly single banked with high level windows on double banked for ventlation.
