About me Kiara G. Dorta Architect in training San Juan, Puerto Rico
Growing up, I always had a pencil in hand. In my free time, I sketched out floor plans of my friends and I’s dream homes. I would imagine myself living in the spaces I created; and spent hours playing “The Sims” on my computer, designing perfect virtual houses. My inclination and passion for the construction and design industries further grew, peaking by the time I was 9. That’s when my family moved to a neighborhood full of residential construction projects. I saw houses being built from scratch, and I wanted to be the one designing them. This love for design led me to enroll in an architecture summer camp in high school. Years later, I’d end up attaining a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the “ArqPoli” School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. In college, I developed a design philosophy focused on creating functional, accessible, adaptable spaces with a timeless aesthetic. I’ve always been drawn to architectural styles like Art Deco, Mid-Century, brutalism, and futurism, among others. Architects like Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, Oscar Niemeyer, and Flores & Prats inspired my work, particularly as I transitioned into the professional realm. My work experience in the field has been invaluable and enlightening. I’ve learned that there’s more to completing a project than just design elements, or meeting deadlines. The process entails and requires various skills — from tackling challenges with consultants and clients, to managing and staying within budgets, and keeping tabs on all aspects of the construction field. Despite any challenges though, it’s been rewarding to see my work materialize.

As an architect, I am committed to designing spaces that fulfill functional needs and enhance people’s lives. I believe my passion for the craft, coupled with my unique skillet and experience, can bring a fresh perspective. It is one I hope to be able to bring to your firm

Using color as a primary element, we aim to create a stimulating and playful environment for preschoolers. We use different colors to identify and differentiate classrooms and create a cheerful atmosphere. The shapes of the windows and skylights add interest and variety to both the facade and interior spaces while also providing natural light and ventilation. Additionally, the windows allow children and adults to interact with the outside area, promoting a sense of connection and openness. Our goal is to meet the needs and expectations of our clients while providing a safe and comfortable place for children's education and development.

The project is a franchise building that has to comply with the strict design constraints and guidelines of Taco Bell. The main idea was to create a facade that reflects the brand identity and values while also being simple and easy to maintain, as requested by the clients. The solution was to use a combination of materials, colors, and shapes matching the brand logo and style, creating a recognizable facade representing the franchise and its colors.

EUROMODA

EUROMODA Typology: Retail Location: Mayaguez, Puerto Rico This project is a 2,330 square feet Euromoda store in Mayaguez Mall, Puerto Rico. Euromoda has several stores in San Juan, but this is their first one outside the city. The client wanted a new entrance and cashier area design while keeping the same layout and colors as the other stores. The design solution was creating a dynamic and eye-catching storefront with different heights, materials, and colors that attract customers. The storefront has two shop windows, one taller than the other, with the entrance in the middle. One of the windows features an inviting angle, while an LED panel system emits bright colors, creating an attractive and playful storefront atmosphere. The cashier area is spacious and comfortable. The store layout and colors are consistent with the brand identity and style, using white, black, beige, and gray as the primary tones.

Casa Vives represents a tremendous and well-preserved example of nineteenth-century craftsmanship, methods, and construction techniques. The property shows the pattern of urban development applied within many traditional urban centers in Puerto Rico. Casa Vives exemplifies the nineteenth-century upper echelons' social aspirations and class representation and their impact on the built landscape.
