east texas: tour Destination The East Texas Tourism Association is pleased to present this resource manual for group tour planners. Its purpose is to introduce you to East Texas, and to assist in making your tours through our region profitable. In this manual you will discover a variety of vacation fun, but more importantly, the cities which offer special features for group travel. Any questions you may have may be directed to the cities and attractions which are participating, and to us. Any information you need will be relayed to you right away. Much of the area covered may be new to you. To bring it into perspective we have included maps relating the region to the state as a whole. Distances are given. We believe the maps and other features will be especially helpful to your tour escorts, and we have published extra copies of the manual to supply their needs.

Over 100 antique shops within 30 minute driving radius. Tour guides available. Located in Franklin County, 8th smallest of 254 in Texas. The Cherokee Trace runs the eastern boundary of the county; highway of the Caddo Confederacy (26 tribes with a common language) from Nacogdoches to Oklahoma. The Cherokee Indians traveled this highway in the early 1830's when they were expelled from their native lands in the east and

22

a decade later they traveled the same route when the Republic of Texas expelled them to Oklahoma. The Trace is truly a part of the Cherokee Trail of Tears. An East-West Indian Trade Route passes through the county and parallels present day U.S. Highway 67; this route - the Choctaw Trail. Sam Houston and Davey Crockett both traveled the Cherokee Trace as they entered Texas. The last Indian Massacre in the eastern half of the State of Texas was on April 10, 1841, just east of the town of Mt. Vernon. Settlers from a 70 mile radius gathered and drove the few remaining Indians out of the eastern half of the State. Franklin County was first part of Red River County, one of 16 original counties in the Republic of Texas; then in Titus. In 1875, Franklin County was carved out of Titus. Mt. Vernon, organized in 1848, was named county seat. County records go back to 1836; invaluable genealogical records are preserved. The earliest homes standing in Mt. Vernon date from the 1870's; there are three antebellum plantation homes in the county. Over 60 pre-WWI homes are marked on a designated driving tour in the city. So go ahead, visit us and “Come Experience the Nature of an Earlier Texas!” DEMOGRAPHICS: Mount Vernon's populations is 2,500. Franklin County's population is 10,000. Terrell originated as one of the "depot towns" built as the Texas and Pacific Railroad Company began the construction of a new transcontinental railroad going from Longview in Eastern Texas to California, more or less along the 32nd parallel of latitude. Originally the railroad route was expected to go from Longview to Tyler and thence west through Corsicana. As a result of some shenanigans in the Texas Legislature in the Fall of 1872 as the company obtained its charter, that route was changed to go through Dallas, then characterized as a small village. The change ignited the growth of Dallas, but also opened the possibility of building a depot in the Northern part of Kaufman County. A depot would provide a vitally needed service to the area, but also would open an opportunity for real estate speculation activity by some large landowners in the area. Robert A. Terrell, an early pioneer and surveyor in the County, his brother-in-law Judge W.D. Irvine, C.C.Nash, and John G. Moore all controlled land directly in the projected route of the railroad. In a complicated series of transactions in 1873, land was donated to the railroad company in return for a promise to build a depot on a designated 100 acres of land. World War II brought changes to Terrell, with the establishment of a British flight training school (No. 1 BFTS) at the southern edge of the city. After the close of the war, the buildings on the airfield provided sites for new small industries and a program of industrial diversification began which continues to this day. Ranching has replaced farming as the primary activity of the rural areas surrounding Terrell, areas which are quickly becoming dotted with new homes making Terrell " The City of Tomorrow With the Charm of Yesterday." Heritage tours may be scheduled. The historical tour will be conducted by a member of the Terrell Heritage Society dressed in period costume. The tour may include the majority of Terrell’s Historical District and provide background information on homes and buildings of historical significance along the route. Come ride along with us to learn about Terrell’s rich heritage and the wonderful old homes and buildings that attract so many visitors to our area. The tour may include a stop at the Terrell Heritage Museum at 207 N. Frances where tour goers will be able to step off the Shuttle bus and view displays depicting Terrell’s past. The Carnegie Building is itself a significant part of Terrell’s heritage having served as the public library for approximately 80 years from its construction in 1904. Among the Museum’s major artifacts is a 1912 Estey pipe organ rebuilt to playing condition. The large collections along with some 300 photographs and oil paintings of early Terrell buildings done by local artist, Hazel Slayton, plus many smaller collections tell the heritage of Terrell and its people. Terrell’s railroading past is reflected in the private railroad car in Lion’s Club Park which was part of the rolling stock of the Texas Midland Railroad, once headquartered in Terrell. An interesting collection pertaining to the company and its colorful owner E.H.R. Green, son of the infamous Hetty Green, the "Witch of Wall Street", are displayed in the museum. THE #1 BRITISH FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL MUSEUM commemorates the joint effort between the citizens of Texas, the British and the American governments in training more than 2,200 British and American pilots in Terrell during World War II. The museum introduces visitors to the men and women who made up the school, what life was like for the students and what these extraordinary individuals went on to accomplish. Supplementary displays include the birth of the Royal Air Force, events that led to the start of World War II and hands-on exhibits that show visitors the science of flight. Museum hours are Wed., Fri., Sat. 10AM-4PM. HISTORIC R. A. TERRELL HOMEPLACE: The homeplace is located on the campus of Southwestern Christian College in Terrell. It has also been given a Medallion as a Texas Historic Landmark. This home was one of the first dwellings erected in Terrell. The changing seasons: Spring like Augusta and Autumn like Virginia. The flora and fauna of the forests and the prairies. It’s partly Old South, partly New West. The cities in this manual want to assist you by providing information to produce tour programs and packages to and through this region. We are ready to serve you.

EAST TEXAS:

OLD SOUTH, NEW WEST East Texas is only one-fifth of the land area of Texas. But take a few tall pines off the top of Maine, and East Texas would be as big as New England’ six states. Much of the region is little known to many tour operators. For the 23rd year, cities and attractions in this “green belt” of Texas have banded together to produce a group tour manual to show itinerary; ideas between the Interstates. It reveals: A pine-hardwood forest area as big as the State of Kentucky. Big man-made reservoirs, and thousands of smaller lakes, along with one of the South’s great natural lakes. The playground that is the Gulf of Mexico, with its bays and channels reaching to the ports of the great Texas Coastal plain. A steam tourist railroad that runs through the scenic hills. An Indian reservation in the forest. The largest oil field in the continental United States. Museums which commemorate the great East Texas Oil Field, and Spindletop, and the great forest industry. Shrines of Texas history: where the declaration of independence from Mexico was signed; the pivotal battle fought, and where Sam Houston lived.

WHO TO CALL The El Camino Real, one of the oldest roads in North America, blazed by the Spaniards in 1691. An old stone fort, ceremonial Indian mounds, and a log mission along the road. River towns, and former plantation areas. Country inns, rose fields, potteries. Unique dining places, with fare which ranges from Old South catfish dinners to deep-sea foods, to barbecue and Cajun foods. Cities along historic Red River Valley, spilling over into Oklahoma and Arkansas. The Sabine River Valley, which joins Texas with Louisiana, with some of the flavors of both states melding at these points. And a reflection of how East Texans have fun in rodeos, county fairs, trail rides, festivals. NASA, and the Urban Cowboy lure of the South’s largest city.
