Blog Corner ➪ RED LIPS

HOW tO & mY tOP ReD LIPstICKs Karen maher the makeup and Beauty studio Tips & Product Recommendations. · I was inspired to start this “How to” make up section by a friend of mine who text me recently looking for some tips on the best way to apply lipstick. this got me thinking that I could use my website as a base to share make up tips, tricks and product recommendations with everyone. I am going to share with you some application techniques for applying red (or any colour) lipstick. I adore red lipstick. It makes a woman feel feminine, elegant and classy when applied correctly. A red lip accompanied with red nails is the perfect combination to brighten up a dark outfit. Application Apply lipliner: use a lip liner close to the shade of the lipstick. Outline the lips and then fill in the lips with the liner. Lip liner helps to prevent the lipstick from bleeding while also helping the lipstick to last longer. Apply Lipstick: Go over the lips with the lipstick, if you prefer you can use a lip brush (use cotton bud to tidy up around the edges if you need to) Blot: use a tissue to plot between your lips, this will remove any excess product. Check teeth for any lipstick marks

m: (086) 2620355 e: neans@mcsweeneymedia.ie

Lip-gloss (optional): I tend not to use lip-gloss as I prefer a more matte look, I also find the lipstick lasts better without gloss. - If your lips are dry: Get your lips in shape use a toothbrush and lightly brush over your lips. Apply Vaseline or any lip balm to the lips, this will help to moisturize the lips before you apply your lipstick. (I do this step at the beginning of the make up application to ensure dry lips are nice and soft, remove the Vaseline before applying any further lip products) Red Lipstick Recommendations: mac Ruby Woo a stunning long lasting matte red lipstick from mac.

Winter whites are as strong as ever on the Autumn/Winter runways, from fluffy white furs worn with white tailored suiting, to white lace dresses. this trend is easily assembled at any price and is one of the most wearable trends this season.

Girls will be boys this season as militaryinspired fashion remains in full-force this Autumn. Fashion, Beauty, Health Despite its not-so-cool reputation, the plain ol’ turtleneck is infinitely wearable. Think about it: it keeps you toasty without adding bulk. For the ideal mix, wear a basic cotton style under a heavy-fabric coat with plenty of personality. Fashionable tight turtlenecks will combine great with a skirt or dress. Audrey Hepburn would approve.

Berry colours are a huge trend this Autumn, and it’s a colour that is so versatile. It suits every skin tone and is great for both day and evening wear. But the real must-have for the Autumn/ Winter is burgundy colour. It’s a super feminine and stylish colour for day and night.

Whether checkered, tartan or houndstooth, we’ll all be marching straight into Autumn with a wardrobe of plaid jackets, dresses, trousers and more. Plaid is constantly being reincarnated in every way possible, so if you can imagine a new way to wear it – particularly some unconventional way – then now’s your chance to bring it to fruition!

Women in Business It’s during times like these that we begin to see the resilience and sheer determination of independent businesses to survive. take a stroll down the quaint pedestrianized Kieran street and you’ll get buckets of independent shops, restaurants and beauty salons who are battling hard against these recessionary times and winning. One thing you will notice is that behind each counter, bar or clothes rail you’ll see a woman running the show. Kieran street has a higher than average proportion of women business owners with over 50% of total businesses female operated. We had a chat with some of these lovely ladies about their passions, their challenges and their competition.

We have been in business for 16 years and over that time, we have built up a loyal clientele. All of the staff at Ailish’s are highly qualified and we have won many awards. We were the first salon to bring laser treatments and HD brows to Kilkenny. At Ailish’s, we always like to be at the forefront with new and exciting products. We have just launched Gelish as seen on Xpose. In addition to newspaper and in-house advertising, we also use Facebook to keep our clients informed. For more information contact 056 7770750

Liz Walsh What drives your passion for your business? My passion for my business is driven basically by a love of books and people. I have been involved in bookselling and retail all my life. Retail in general and bookselling in particular has been greatly affected by this recession however, I love a challenge and am constantly looking at ways in which I can develop my business further.

Bridget Kearney

Ailish Morkan What drives your passion for your business? I’ve always had an interest in beauty. Every woman, regardless of her budget, wants to look her best. All women are beautiful and what drives my passion is bringing out that beauty and helping them feel confident about themselves. How have you adapted to survive these challenging times? Obviously people don’t have as much disposable income as they had a few years ago and like every other business, we’ve had to adapt. It’s all about value for money these days and in Ailish’s we have treatments to fit every budget. For example, we have just launched Guinot’s new Hydraclean facial treatment, which is an amazing facial and fantastic value at only €30. Do you find you get support from your surrounding fellow business owners or is there strong competition? There is a great community spirit with the businesses in Kieran street. We all recognise that the more foot traffic on the street, the better for all of us, so our individual success depends on our success as a group.

What drives your passion for your business? Customer Satisfaction! Without a doubt. The sheer joy on a customers face when their shape has been transformed by the expert fitting of a Bra. How have you adapted to survive these challenging times? Well, we opened Belle Femme Lingerie in a recession. But I always believed that a strong work ethic with a concentration on customer service would go a long way. Do you find you get support from your surrounding fellow business owners or is there strong competition? Yes, I get huge support from my surrounding fellow Business owners. My Boutique is on Kieran Street and while there is strong competition there is great Camaraderie between us. Belle Femme - We chose the name Belle Femme through our belief that every woman deserves to feel beautiful. We believe well-chosen, expertly-fitted lingerie can achieve this, no matter what shape you are. Our expert training in fitting, along with our high level of product knowledge, warm welcome and strong commitment to customer service is at the centre of our offering. How have you adapted to survive these challenging times? I have created several “pop up shops” at various literary venues including Book Clubs, Kilkenny Arts Festival, and Carlow Writer’s Festival. Do you find you get support from your surrounding fellow business owners or is there strong competition? I have wonderful support from the local community which is so much appreciated and from my fellow business owners. In Kieran street there is a wonderful sense of camaraderie, we frequently work together on ways of improving our image” stone House Books is an independent, locally owned bookshop run by proprietor Liz Walsh As well as a fantastic selection of books, Liz also stocks cards, journals and a beautiful selection of gifts. Liz, who has over 30 years experience in the industry moved to Kieran street to open her shop in 2011. In the same year she was runner up for best Independent bookshop in great Britain and Ireland. (without making me look like my mother!); that fit well, and don’t break the bank. I discovered that there was a very definite ‘gap’ in the market for good day-wear, clothes that you put on and they make you feel good and look slimmer – isn’t that what we all want? speaking as a girl that has been every size from a 10 to an 18, I can honestly say, I know how my clients feel. I have bingo wings and a tummy, and I don’t want skirts above my knee anymore, so when I do my buying for the shop, I ask myself who is going to wear this dress. Will it suit a size 10 or is it really better suited to a 16 or 18. If it’s sleeveless, what can I put over or under it; how many ways can I reinvent it? How have you adapted to survive these challenging times? At Rumour, you will always receive the best care and attention and honest, practical advice. I am not in this business to ‘flog’ you a dress. I honestly believe my best advert is a woman that looks good in her outfit; it fits her well and works with her lifestyle. I will always give an honest opinion of the style and fit and guide my clients towards shapes that flatter their assets and hide any areas of their body they have an issue with. this is the Rumour ethos. During the course of my first years’ trading, my regulars have come to understand that and trust my judgement and opinion, and I would honestly rather lose a sale than have a dissatisfied customer! Clothes, now more than ever, have to work well within your existing wardrobe. If you are buying a new outfit, how else can it be worn, maybe with a skirt you already have, or those pants you bought last year in the sale and have never worn yet. these are daily conversations in Rumour. It is only through dialogue with my clients that we can come to decisions together. Do you find you get support from your surrounding fellow business owners or is there strong competition? On those occasions when I have not got what my ladies are looking for, I have no hesitation in suggesting other local boutiques to them. my clients always appreciate such advice and I know from experience that the other girls in the boutiques in Kieran’s street reciprocate. this is a very happy little street to work in, we take in deliveries for one another, alert each other if there are problems and work together to promote the street and to constantly improve it. every day, it really is a pleasure to come to work. Nicky Flynn What drives your passion for your business? Having always had an affinity to the Hotel & Catering business, coming to Kyteler’s Inn embodies all that I love about the business. We strive to have the building in use on all levels so we need a constant “think tank” to keep the business up to par. I really enjoy the fact that no two days are ever the same - even though it might be the same people coming in on the same day at the same time - something different will always pop up. How have you adapted to survive these challenging times? Kyteler’s has seen a huge amount of changes over the years and we choose to find the positive in the challenge. The smoking Area/ Courtyard was rarely used until the smoking ban came in. When nightclubs went into decline with the introduction of Late Bars we chose to remodel the top Bar and it too is now used on a daily basis for a lot of our Irish music nights & other functions. Do you find you get support from your surrounding fellow business owners or is there strong competition? Kieran street is a fantastic street. Yes, there is strong competition with all the bars, restaurants & cafes but, as they say, the best place to be is beside the competition. this brings a huge volume of visitors down the street and that can only help any business on the street. support from fellow traders is brilliant and I think this shows in the recognition that Kieran street is getting from the tourism bodies and Keep Kilkenny Beautiful. now, if we could just get it pedestrianized later in the evening during the summer months ……... What drives your passion for your business? Holidays! I love holidays and travelling, so I think if I work hard enough I can have nice holidays to look forward to! But seriously, Butterslip has been open since 2005, and in that time I think its developed its own personality, playfulness and quirks. the passion comes in keeping that new and fresh, finding inspiration in all kinds of places, and ways to use it creatively - thats where my personal and business life come together, and is most fun. How have you adapted to survive these challenging times? Beyond the obvious trying to cut costs etc. I do believe sometimes its worth spending more - we put a lot of thought into our packaging for example, to make it super special and lovely when someone receives a gift from Butterslip. People may have less to spend, but they should feel twice as good about it when they do give or receive a nice gift. In every way, we try and make a visit to Butterslip as fun and enjoyable as it can be. Do you find you get support from your surrounding fellow business owners or is there strong competition? We have a super supportive community in Kilkenny and particularly on our lovely Kieran street. Its in everyones interest to make sure Kilkenny is a brilliant place to visit - to shop, eat and see all the attractions of the city. We get a lot of referrals from other businesses in the city, and in turn we are constantly trying to help people get the most out of their visit by recommending places we think they’ll love. the feedback we get from visitors, Irish and otherwise is brilliant and its lovely to be a part of that experience. Leisure, Culture, Interview were very sceptical about how it would turn out but I kept going and it was a great success and because of this was in a position to secure a publisher, The O’ Brien Press to publish my subsequent endeavours.

A Flair for food edward Hayden is making a name for himself as a celebrity chef in Ireland. edward is a Kilkenny native we asked him a few questions on what inspires him and what he likes to eat. What inspired you to take up cooking as a career? I worked in the catering and hospitality industry as a summer and weekend job when i was in school and thought...this is the thing for me. I initially trained in professional cookery at Waterford Institute of technology, before completing a Bachelor of Arts in Advanced Culinary Arts at Cork Institute of Technology. in 2012 I also graduated with a Master’s Degree in Learning & Teaching in Higher & Third Level Education. Were your family involved in cooking? Like or loathe the term, People use the term ‘foodie now to describe associations with food. Well i suppose you could say we were foodies. Perhaps not in the modern way we understand the ‘foodie’ but definitely good quality home cooking of well chosen and sourced ingredients was of paramount importance to my mother as we were all growing up. She was a very typical Irish ‘mammy’ at the time and baked every daybread, scones, buns (no one made cupcakes in those days!!) and cakes as well as big pots of stew, meat pie, homemade soup and roasted chickens. I am the youngest of five and two of my sisters love cooking and experimenting with different food combinations so its good that three of the five of us inherited her love and knowledge of cooking and using good quality ingredients. How did you become experienced in cooking? Did you practice with family and friends, or start a food blog? As i said we were also exposed to cooking at home so we all tried our hand at it. My earliest attempt was fairly disastrous though! My uncles lived in the UK when we were small and my grandmother used to go and visit them every year and on one such occasion as she returned i thought it would be a great idea to bake her a cake. At the time we had a

snow white solid fuel Rayburn cooker. We also had a big blue tupperware bowl, into which i put some flour, sugar and egg and mixed well. I then placed the blue bowl on top of the aforementioned cooker to allow it to cook as i went off to play. The ‘cake’ never baked and the cooker was never the same again! Good intentions though! I worked in the Duiske Inn, Graignamanagh when i was in school and did all catering jobs there. ( i washed everything from the glasses to the plates and from the toilets to the potatoes and grew a great respect and understanding for the hospitality industry and could see that it was the industry for me. I then went on to work in Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel, Kilkenny Design Centre and Dunbrody Country House and in each place i progressed through the various sections. They say that tenacity is a good quality to have and i have plenty of it when the challenge is there. Also, like many people with a recreational interest in cookery i loved catering for family and friends at all the different family gatherings and getting them all to act as guinea pigs on my different concoctions! What are some ingredients that would always be in your kitchen? Even when the cupboards are getting bare at home you will always find Garlic, Rapeseed oil, Chilli jam, Chilli Flakes and a bit of fresh Parmesan in my house! What would be your ultimate comfort food? I know it is the standard answer but there is nothing like a traditional roast dinner with all the trimmings. As a child I loved waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of beef roasting in the oven downstairs and the marrowfat peas simmering on the stove top. Served with mashed carrot and parsnips and mum’s crispy roast potatoes and lashing of gravy it was and is…foodie heaven! Congratulations on your previous two books, how did you feel when you realised how successful they had been? It was a great sense of achievement. Writing a book was something that I always wanted to do and when I wrote the first one, ‘Edward Entertains’ it was self published and my family

What makes your new book different to the others? There are so many books out there that it is always difficult to come up with a slant. For me it came sort of naturally as the brand that I have been building is that of ‘Edward Entertains’ so we just picked a whole series of different occasions which would require catering and chosen some complementary recipes for each chapter. The book has 11 chapters of varying themes to suit all of life’s entertaining occasions! In your new book, you talk about “easy, enjoyable meals.” What’s the biggest hassle in the kitchen? I always think the biggest challenge in preparing any dish is the shopping. For some people the grocery shopping is a real chore. Some are good at it and only have to do weekly and get all that they require whilst others find themselves scouring the supermarket shelves every day for culinary inspiration. I always think that once you have the ingredients in your cupboards and fridge then it is very easy to build the dish. Where do you get your inspiration for new recipes? I love trying out new ideas and looking at new products and product ideas as they come onto the market and just playing around. At all of my demonstrations I always say to people when they are following a recipe at home if they don’t have one ingredient just substitute it for another and in some instances when you do this at home you end up cooking a completely different dish...hence product development. these days people are a lot busier and tend to opt for take outs rather than cooking from home, what tips would you give them for a quick easy meal to try? That’s an easy question to answer and I can do it in three words. ‘Keep it Simple’ You now have three cookbooks, work on Ireland Am and are a lecturer at WIt, what’s next for you? I am currently starting working on developing my own ‘Edward Entertains Cookery School’ which hopefully will open in late Spring 2014. Over the course of the summer my plan is to getting the cookery school sorted, continue my weekly cookery slots of TV3’s Ireland AM, my fortnightly cookery column with Woman’s Way Magazine and ...Get a tan!!

edward Hayden’s Food for Friends is out now in all good bookshops.

BUILDING ROOTS We got in touch with Dennis Blasche through the Gathering committee in Kilkenny when we were looking for a personal story for the Gathering. Denis is a Charleston native of the deep south of America who has a connection with a little town called Cuffsgrange. With a bit of back and forth I finally got to have a chat to Denis. the story of how Dennis found his Irish connection started back in 2002, his paternal grandfather had just passed and going through his affairs they came across some genealogy research. All the papers and cuttings referred to James Hoban the man who designed one of the most famous buildings in the world; the White House. Dennis along with some relatives continued the research that his grandfather had started to trace back his roots to Cuffesgrange Co. Kilkenny. Coincidentally Dennis is also an architect following in the path of his forefather James. Here we talk to him a bit about preserving the memory of James Hoban, what it means to him to have Irish connections and how he sees the world of modern architecture.

evening, I stayed out with several Council members and sang Irish traditional songs and drank pints of Guinness until the wee hours. I serendipitously met All-Ireland champ Richie Power at the local Kilkenny pub, and later got him to sign a hurley for my son. The grandfather of Georgian architectural history, the Honorable Desmond Guinness, invited several of us to kitchen table dinner at Leixlip Castle - a highlight of my trips. My next assignment is to share the experience of travelling Ireland with my wife and four children, and to have a Gathering with local Kilkenny friends at the Memorial Arbor in Cuffesgrange.

Naturally, our entire family is very proud. As a practicing architect who works on federal, municipal, and public housing projects, it is even more meaningful for me to be tied to such a public servant. Not only did Hoban design and build our White House, but almost more important to me, he directly served multiple Presidents in a very tumultuous and turbulent time in our nation’s history. For most Americans, the White House generally evokes pride in our country, our history of achieving and promoting freedom and equality for all, so naturally, anyone can identify with the building in a meaningful way. When people learn that I am the 5th Great Grandson of Hoban, I usually receive respect that he alone earned.

James was from a small village called Cuffs grange in Kilkenny have you ever visited it?

I have been to Cuffesgrange and Callan, and Kilkenny, and Dublin twice. Once in 2006, and later in 2008. In those three years, we held several commemorative events in celebration of life of James Hoban, and Irish and American “connections”. In 2008, we opened the James Hoban Memorial Arbor to the public in Cuffesgrange, and I was also honoured guest at Kilkenny Castle for a lovely evening celebrating Irish heritage. Both of my visits were extremely meaningful, and special to me. After the formal part of the

24

KILKennY Autumn

Are there any plans to elaborate on your Irish connections?

Certainly, I am working with other Hoban descendants in America and historians in the US and Ireland to create the James Hoban Heritage Society, which we hope will be an online/digital clearinghouse for all interested in Hoban connections. We will post pictures, research, history, articles, a timeline, and possibly work to fund further architectural and cultural research on Hoban-related items. Additionally, we’d like to host and sponsor occasional reunions for descendants of James Hoban. It’s a lofty, but worthy, endeavour to broaden his legacy and foster Irish & American connections.

This is the year of the Gathering in Ireland where we are celebrating our Irishness, do you consider yourself Irish?

How did you decide to get into Architecture yourself?

You’re a direct descendant of James Hoban the architect who famously designed the White House you must be very proud.

from Charleston and have worked my entire career here, which is where Hoban lived before he moved to Washington to work on the White House.

I was originally an engineering student, but switched to Architecture due to the allure of aesthetics and design. My freshman year at university, I was in a male choral group that performed at the Meyerson Symphony Centre, by I.M. Pei - it was the most glorious building and experience with a building I had ever had. Earlier that day, I had also seen two sculptures by Rodin, which blew me away and spoke to me in a very human way. I changed my major to architecture the next semester. I’ve always been completely convinced that architecture can and should inspire, and that good design is responsive to our emotion as

well as our physical sense of comfort.

Have you always known about Hoban, and your connection to Kilkenny?

Not at all, actually. My maternal grandfather was struck with cancer while I was an undergraduate, and in his last months, he gathered boxes of “family history” for each of his daughters. After his death, we kind of rummaged through the files and we found article after article, and a family tree, connecting us all back to Hoban through our family in Washington, D.C. The interesting thing is that I found out about my relation and connection to Hoban after I had been a graduate student in Architecture, so my selection of the profession was completely independent of the family history. Another stroke of coincidence, is that I married a girl

It’s funny how much our experiences shape us. I am technically eight generations removed from our Irish-born Hoban patriarch, but I feel very Irish, and proud to be connected to such a wonderful place and people. My experiences, and warm welcome in Kilkenny and Dublin, all help solidify the heartfelt love for Ireland. I think of all nations, the Irish truly understand and feel kindred to our American experience. Our mutual love of, and struggle for, independence ties us in a special way. Then when you look at the contributions of the Irish in America, the connections are unmistakable. Our family is also Irish Catholic, which is very meaningful to many within the family, as is our love for music… very Irish.

How do you think modern architecture differs from the buildings of the past?

Well, first, it’s certainly not better. I think we have mistaken our 21st century notion of “technology” for quality. This is grave, as generally the level of care put into our building’s these days is pitiful. Our forebears understood that buildings and places of significance are built with care, over time. We have also witnessed the slow departure from designing in a particular “style” in architecture; which is good when these are poor imitations of a quality antecedent, but bad when the emerging “taste” of the architect is unproven, or lacks refinement and proper judgment. Lastly, I believe the influence of private development has generally weakened our built world and in some cases, sent us down a primrose path of progress and experimentation in city planning, with only a cliff of failure at the end of the trail. Our best buildings are usually crafted when sensitive designers are charged with designing for the public good, through public buildings, including public discourse. Design competitions and a public design review process can help spur the dialogue and critique that is often needed to help us avoid the developer’s wanton lust for “progress”. The sustainability movement has also spurred great progress toward stewardship, in a growingly selfish world. We are better when we ask, is this good for my grandchildren...or in my case, my 5th Great

Spotlight on Business

Donal O’Dwyer

1.How many years have you been in business? Our practice is just over 8 years old. I recently joined the practice as a partner, having previously been Financial Controller of Killarney Telecommunications Limited. Before I qualified as a chartered accountant I worked in my family’s butchers so I have always worked at the heart of business. 2.What kind of services do you provide and is there any area that you specialise in? We provide audit, accountancy and taxation services to small to medium companies and sole traders. We provide our clients with very clear financial information in a timely manner so we can advise them the best way to progress their business at any stage during the year – not just at the year end.

circle includes clients you know will pay you; staff you know will work in the best interests of the business and professionals you trust to give you sound, timely financial advice. 6.For visitors to Kilkenny what would be the one attraction you would recommend? The walks along the River Nore are brilliant. The recent work on the Lacken and Riverside walks provide free amenities far away from the hustle of everything.

3.As somebody who is self employed, do you have a good work/life balance and how hard is it to achieve that? Work life balance is always difficult to achieve when you are in business for yourself. Ideally, I’d like more time for hurling matches and walking our collie. However I won’t complain about being busy. 4.In your opinion, what are the main challenges facing small business’ today? Business and individuals need to be given the confidence and access to funds to begin spending again. Business creates business and every new enterprise that opens creates jobs and more money in our economy. Plenty of people received decent lump sum pensions in recent years. The government should come up with an incentive scheme to encourage these individuals to invest in business.

A Sty ish Man Paul O’Connor

Looking back to Summer 2013, I recall a highlight of cocktails on the outdoor rooftop bar of Dublin’s trendy new Marker hotel in the Sunshine, everyone dressed head to toe in vibrant neon colours reminiscent of Puerto Banus. I also recall the rain soaked barbecue another day where the neons looked sadly out of place!

Warholesque suits featuring vertical and horizontal stripes in various shades of grey, only for the daring! So fill your wardrobe with fifty shades of grey, some casual but nicely tailored day wear and you’re all set for the Autumn/Winter party season. Enjoy it all, and hopefully some sunshine that’s Summer 2013!

This season sees the palette change and a broader choice of styles to choose from, many of these styles borrow elements from recent menswear history. The safest colour in your wardrobe this season will be grey, you can see it in many collections, different shades of grey being worn together from head to toe. I love the contrasting hues and patterns in the Viktor and Rolf collection and Neil Barrett’s slate grey baseball type jackets over gunmetal grey trousers which they showed in London for A/W 13. The look is very flattering even for those of us who overindulged in fine food and cocktails during this Summer’s party season, so it will be replicated in many High street stores. Calvin Klein has cleverly borrowed from the traditional gentleman’s wardrobe and made it more casual but still with enough good tailoring to pass as ‘dressed up’ which contrasts sharply with one of my eternal favourites Commes des Garçons who have taken inspiration this season from, it would seem, urban youth. At their London show they paired hooded tops in candy colours with combats in contrasting shades of candy, delicious! Vivienne Westwood also borrowed elements from the gentleman’s wardrobe with dress coats in grey matched with lighter grey shirts. Being forever flamboyant Vivienne of course has the flowy coat available in red which is a daring but eye catching look that’s definitely on my shopping list. The Westwood collection also included another nod to the past with

Backing a sitting out in the beautiful sunshine (a rarity in the Irish summer!), I think of lazy summer days, lounging on beaches and the excitement of Ladies Day At the races. It’s a great opportunity for ladies to get themselves dressed up and have a flutter and if you are serious about your style it’s an event to show if off and maybe even win Best Dressed. Recently I attended the Littlewoods Ladies Day event at Gowran Park. If you are a Kilkenny native, you’ll know that Gowran is only a stones throw away, a mere 15 min drive from the city centre. Littlewoods are running these events all through the summer and will be hosted by a selection of stunning celebrities starting off with the lovely Caroline morahan. As a lover of style there was plenty on offer. Ladies were styled to a tee and were invited back to the Littlewoods tent for a complimentary glass of Champagne while they anxiously awaited the winner. Eight finalists were chosen in the end(names here) with one eventual winner, sinead De Butlear, a former rose of Kilkenny. each lady had a story of how they came to choose their outfit and one that struck a cord with me was Betty. Betty was a lady who celebrated her 73 birthday on the day and was stylishly dressed in a long navy and lemon floral light jacket with a cream slacks and matching navy wedges. An elegant timeless outfit that perfectly complimented her. Betty who is visually impaired had a really heartfelt story as she managed to be one of the finalists despite having never seen the outfit she wore. It was an outfit chosen for her daughters wedding. everyone was in agreement that she was indeed a deserving finalist of the Littlewoods Best dressed lady event.

Winner It’s stories like these that make the event and every finalist always had a great story about how they came to put together their outfit. The excitement for these ladies is not always about the promise of their horse coming home but of getting the recognition for their beautifully put together outfit, even if that is just a compliment from a passing stranger.

Log onto Littlewoods Ireland or www. goracing.ie for the list of all the Ladies Day events over the Autumn

Top Tips for Styling your race day outfit. make sure you dress for the weather. strappy sandals and bare shoulders are a no no in a winter meet! elegance is timeless so don’t discount that gorgeous outfit that may be a few years old. It’s not all about spending hundreds, a well put together outfit will look a lot more expensive. Borrow from a friend or if you are lucky to know a milliner borrow one of their creations. Be comfortable make sure you have a plaster or two in your bag as standing for hours in 4 inch heels takes it’s tole! most importantly smile and have fun. this is a day out at the races, have a flutter and if you are not so lucky to be a finalist you will still have had fun Photos: Pat Moore.

The

Gathering

Did you know that over 70 million people worldwide claim Irish ancestry? Over half of that number emanates from the USA. This figure suggests to me that all these people from the four corners of the earth are immensely proud of their Irish roots. And why shouldn’t they be? Located somewhere between America and Britain lies the 120th largest country in the world. And we certainly have the biggest spirit in my opinion. The Gathering provides us with the

unique opportunity to embrace the Irishness in us all and gather together our friends and family from around the world to join in the celebrations. Depending on who you are, being Irish might be as simple and as mystical as the time of day you eat your dinner at. Or it might be hating the eurovision and watching it anyway; it

the Gathering kicked off in spectacular fashion on new Year’s eve and has proved to be a truly rewarding experience for everyone involved so far. I have witnessed several families reuniting and the Gathering was what made all of the rejoicing possible.

might be losing the run of yourself and putting it on the long finger; it might be the Angelus; our media; our native sports; our cups of tea. We complain a lot, of course. And we complain about how much we complain, but really, we’d be lost without our heritage. Over the past few years, many people born and bred in Ireland have emigrated in search of employment overseas. I can’t imagine what that must be like, to leave your family behind and everyone you’ve grown up with behind. this is the main reason the Gathering has been a huge success. Generations of families have come flocking home to Ireland because of this huge event that has been organized throughout the year.

A Smile to Remember

How long has Operation Smile been in Ireland? 2013, actually marks Operation smile’s 10th year in Ireland. since 2003 the organisation has been organising medical volunteers for missions abroad, as well as raising funds and awareness for the cause. Internationally, Operation smile is 30 years old this year. It’s a land mark year for us! What brought you to Operation Smile? I have always wanted to get involved with medical missions abroad as my wife was always involved in voluntary work and it just rubbed off. I heard about what Operation smile does around the world from a few friends and it sounded like the perfect opportunity for me to help those who need it most. there are quite a lot of Irish volunteers including doctors, nurses, dentists and non medical personnel as well as those who come with us to help out with administration and organisation.

Operation smile is an organisation that helps under privledged children to fix cleft palettes and restores their smiles. We talk to one of their doctors who carries out this great work Dr. Gowan, thanks for talking with me today. You are a consultant anaesthesiologist at Wexford General Hospital, how long have you been doing this? Hello, well I graduated from university College Dublin back in 1979 and completed anaesthesia training in 1988. I did my rotation around various hospitals as a trainee before arriving and settling at Wexford General. What drives you in your work, what are you passionate about? Like any other doctor it really comes down to helping people who need to be helped. I know it sounds simple but it’s true! As an anaesthesiologist, it’s all about bringing relief to patients when they need it most, I’m happiest when I’m bringing comfort to otherwise discomforted people. Outside of work, what are your interests and hobbies? spare time is usually at a premium. When I do get some time I love to keep fit, I think this is really important. I also really enjoy jazz music, and have been known to play a bit of jazz piano in my time…and of course being involved with Operation smile. So, what is Operation Smile and what exactly do they do? Operation smile is an international children’s medical charity, which provides free surgery for children born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate facial deformities in the developing world. It’s the world’s largest volunteer-based medical charity providing free cleft surgeries.

since 1982, Operation smile’s medical volunteers have provided more than 3.5 million comprehensive patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with facial deformities! not only do we do these surgeries but we try to leave a lasting difference in the countries we work in. We train local doctors in developing countries and strengthen healthcare systems, so more children in some of the poorest areas in the world can be treated. We work in over 60 countries to heal children’s smiles and bring hope for a better future. the volunteers with Operation smile are really saving children’s lives! How many children suffer from cleft lips and palates? And how does this affect them? the incidence of clefting is 1 in every 500700 live births all over the world, including Ireland. to put it another way, a child is born with a cleft somewhere in the world every three minutes! In Ireland, corrective surgery is easily available, but in the developing world 75% of cases go untreated. tragically, one in 10 of these children won’t reach their first birthday and the ones who do survive face a number of problems in life. Often they can’t eat, speak, socialise, or even smile. these children most likely do not go to school, join the workforce or lead productive lives. One of the biggest problems is that, in many cases, their parents can’t afford to get them the life-changing surgery they so badly need. How is this treated? It really is so simple to treat. A relatively straight-forward surgery has been used to repair clefts for decades now and can take as little as 45 minutes! Operation smile performs these surgeries free of charge on our missions and the number of successful cases speaks for itself!

How long have you been volunteering for Operation Smile? D: I first heard about them in 2010 and got in contact to see was there anything I could do to help. Before I knew it I was being trained for my first mission to Cambodia later that year. the following 2 years resulted in 2 more successful missions, to morocco in 2011 and ethiopia in 2012. I’m currently looking for another mission later this year to make in 4 missions in 4 years! Thanks you Dr. Gowan, but before we finish up, what can people do if they want to help Operation Smile? there are so many ways to help, if you log on to the website, www.operationsmile.ie, it has all the information on how to donate, every gift helps change the life of a child suffering from a cleft lip or palate. there’s also information on how to raise funds and awareness for Operation smile. If you are interested in volunteering your time and skills then contact the Operation Smile office in Dublin on 01 667 6659.

the Habits of a Consider the common lunch box. Mine’s got some fetching bluegreen mould festering in the corner. It’s peacock mould, and just like its namesake, it likes to be seen. Emitting an acrid smell, it reminds me of the cheesey crackers and dimpled plum I half-nibbled last week. When Tupperware exhibits signs of neglect, all wholesome intentions are dashed on the rocks of carb-heavy convenience, namely the Spar deli counter. As I cast around the office I see ordinary folk, unassuming nine-to-fivers, all with varied lunch habits. However, over a period of months, I have managed to classify two floors of penpushing, Windows-dependent, water-cooler gossipers, by virtue of these very habits. The first group is what I call the G.L.Cs, the Good Lunch box Carriers. The second set is those aspiring to G.L.C status, but who lack motivation and/ or creativity. These are the P &T s, or Packages and Tubs. The third group shun the desk; turn up their noses at the microwave. I call these J.D.s, or Just Deserts. Why? They desert their workplace daily for an hour, to return short of breath, wallet short another tenner. I belong to neither category. A true outsider, I dabble in microwaved lasagnes, occasionally avail of a toasted special in the pub next door, and more often than I care to admit, delight in a triple decker and crisps. Yet, I still hold steadfastly to the belief that my lunch box and I will one day become the envy of the whole office. These are the tenets underpinning the lunchtime practices of the Good Lunch box Carrier (G.L.C.): •Make a plan, stick to it: We’re talking long term. Bulk buying bagels, crackers and rice-cakes is customary. In the event of flood, terrorist threat or an on-site dismal team-building weekend, G.L.C.s will not go hungry. •Go Gaga for Greens: What’ll it be today with my tuna…crisps or spinach? Well ladies, don’t you want to load up on your folic -acid content? Spinach it is then. I admit, it does look very Avoca when it’s tossed in with that ricotta cheese and olives. •Compartmentalise: Lunchboxes have come a long way from the cavernous, one- clasp affairs spotted in the Eighties schoolyard. My own eyes feasted on these compartmentalised wonders across the office floor. They boast a separate sauce/dip compartment. Read that last line again. Mayo, relish, vinaigrette. Drooling yet? And, better still, your greens don’t suffer from the scourge of a leaky beetroot. •Love to Layer: If it’s a simple salad you’re having, you must place the ingredients with precision. To G.L.C.s this is rudimentary. But to a triple-decker junkie, it’s an alien concept. •Keep Your Cool: This is the basic lunch box principle I failed to live up to. Once your lunch box is ferried into work, place it at once in the fridge. This isn’t always possible in an overcrowded workplace, hence the hardcore G.L.C. brings a cool-bag. •Show Variety: Spice up your lunch-life all you singletons, and get flirty with the bits in your box. Do you have a compartment screaming out for Nutella?

Lunchtime

Invite a colleague round to dip their Mariettas at coffee break. And oh, you’ve brought grapes too? And strawberries? Feed me! Sweet or savoury, get snacking when you want. Just make sure you’ve got sufficient napkins for the aftermath. •Name that box: How long were you in the Irish education system? And how many lunchboxes did you go through? Now you see what I mean. Labelling your box with a permanent marker, or indeed, a sticky label will prevent mix-ups. You don’t want to get home, peel open your box, to find you’ve taken Philip from H.R’s leftover fish-pie and not your own sweetly scented celery and apple remnants. •Keep up Appearances: Do you want to be the laughing stock of Accounts, with a mismatching flask and box combi? A clean and attractive lunch box with robust clip-down lid might just give you a boost on the shaky career ladder around here.

Jealous of the G.L.C. brigade? If you knew them, you couldn’t be, they’re so busy sharing celery sticks and paté to be high–and–mighty. What should you make of the P&t category? At first glance, these workers don’t appear any differently to G.L.C.s. A closer examination reveals a people whose credo is “Amazing Graze.” these are the P&T lunchtime guidelines. •Wear What You Eat: The Packages and Tubs people like their jumpers. They go so far as to douse their jumpers with the perfume of their favourite instant hot snack. One P&T member I suspect, bathed in curry sauce before coming in to work last week. Each time she passed by to use the photocopier, I got the distinct waft of tikka masala, leaving me nauseous. Thankfully, not everybody in this category is as enamoured with Pot Noodles. •Be a Ditherer: What will it be? The supposedly healthy but expensive cashews, or an oversized bag of fatty, salted crisps? Take both. A perfectly ripe banana or a tub of anaemic –looking pears set in orange jelly? Such indecision is the cross the P&T must bear. This means the average P&T brings a surfeit of snacks to work. •Carry – On – Eating: To transport the many packages, the average P&T worker needs a strong- handled bag, those lightweight plastic bags won’t do. I’ve noted picnic baskets arriving to work. Wicker baskets. I await the plaid blanket and pink lemonade. •Cultivate Eco- Friendliness: All that plastic has to go somewhere, whether it comes from take-away salads, soup containers, noodles, flapjacks, or dried fruit. I’m flagging recycling bins for the next Board agenda. •Develop Immunity to Sticky Fingers: Those who graze all day on convenience foods like to dip into their packs without breaking contact with their screens/ documents/ Twitter accounts. It’s necessary then that the required snacks are close to hand. Should these workers handle and operate the same equipment that I’m using? Hygiene. It’s gone to pot since the swine flu furore died down. Hand-sanitisers are just gathering dust. •Blow-Out Your Budget: The desk grazers must spend an inordinate amount of money on food. I should know, I’ve had several P&T housemates and they don’t know the price of a sliced pan. Maybe this is how our politicians started out.

Marie Hughes

As you’ve gathered, I’m not enamoured with the P&t philosophy, but I live in hope. the G.L.C.s who slip through the cracks and fall into P&T ranks - who get lazy, get married, or those who fail to replace a missing box - they can get back on track. The third category I identified is the Just Deserts. they invite me to join them irregularly. sometimes, I tag along. What distinguishes them from the rest of the lunch pack: •Accessorise: On leaving the office, and on return, fold up your newspaper, stick it under your arm, and you’re ready to face the pub/ café/ bistro. This makes you look intelligent and shields your hair from drizzle. •Practice Deception: Try not to look smug as you pass by Judy with her Cup-a-Soup and Woman’s Way. Mentally, a J.D. is already wrapping their chops round the freshest bruschetta on the block. Just Deserts are pros, they’ll always remove traces of their lunchtime trysts and brush down their shirts/ shift dresses. •Build Your Repartee: Depending on how you like to Desert the office, you’ll need better social skills than the average P&T. Unless you want to come across as BillyNo-Mates in the window seat slurping soup, being a J.D. means you’ve got to brush up on suitable topics of conversation to guarantee daily inclusion in your chosen set. •Get Sartorially Savvy: Not all J.D.’s are sharp and starched. The odd knobbly-cardigan and walking shoe has gravitated towards the Deserters, but in the main, there is a strict dress code. I imagine Lois from reception sprang from the womb with pencil skirt, fitted low-cut blouse and polished pumps moulded to her limbs. •Know Your Dough: While the G.L.C.s are energised by rice cakes, and the P&Ts feast on flapjacks, the carb du jour for a J.D. is constantly changing. However, it never strays far from a variation on the French stick, with bits of shrivelled veg stuffed in. Last time I checked, it was lemon and asparagus focaccia. Lucky I’m not the jealous type but such snacks make my cheese and crackers look like something a pre-schooler made. There you have it - three categories, three lifestyle choices, all wrapped up and good-to-go. Perhaps you too are familiar with the wiles of a P&T worker, maybe you’ve swatted a J.D. with their Times when they made a pass at your last biscotti. Or right now, you could be privy to a G.L.C.’s top-and-tail routine, as they prepare tomorrow’s lunch box delight. In the great and noble world of work, humble lunchtime offerings provide an insight to our colleagues’ creativity, ambitions and calorie-intake. Then sit back with a partially cooked lasagne and indulge your smug self with a tiny smile, you misfit. Just don’t resort

to mouldy Tupperware!

Book Review Graces And Blessing from Ireland Celine Mescall

Do we ever stop to think where we get our food from. We take a bite of an apple or butter a slice of toast without thinking about where it came from. A farmer out there somewhere took great care to get that apple to maturity, a baker in a factory inspected and made sure that slice of bread was going to reach your plate to your satisfaction. Celine Mescall thinks about all these little things every day and says a little prayer for these small blessings. Whether you are religious or not you have to take a moment to think of how these little pleasures come into our lifes. “Grace and Blessings” is a beautifully illustrated book that gives thanks for these small little miracles. Buy it for yourself or someone you think would benefit from a little time-out and thanks in their day.
