They came up with the idea to have audio guides that were both informative and a bit theatrical. With the help of a voice artist(Aideen Wylde), sound engineer(Rob Laird), musician(Enda Seery) and sound engineer and freelance musician(Gavin Harrison). Abarta audio was set up by Neil who being an archaeologist and unemployed came up with a new way to utilise his skills. You can download these mp3 tracks onto your laptop or smartphone and listen to them at the historical site or from the comfort of your own
armchair. For more information log on www. abartaaudioguides.com John Martyn Tribute Festival Musicians will flock to Thomastown to pay tribute to the folk legend John Martyn. How far can Kilkenny Magazine go?
We have had a great response to the “How far can Kilkenny Magazine go?”, thanks to all our entries. We have chosen a winner who has brought Kilkenny the furthest. Our Winner is Fiona Lavelle, Fiona brought her magazine all the way to San Juan, Puerto Rico, Caribbean Islands. Thank you very much to Fiona who took these pictures for us. She also brought our magazine to London and Orlando. So Kilkenny is now gone international!! Well done again to Fiona.

The Honeymoon
We were flat broke after our wedding, and there was no money for fabulous trips to the Grand Canyon or Australia for the honeymoon. We booked two weeks in Greece with Budget Travel and were damn glad of it. We’d been together for eleven years at this stage, so I’m not even going to pretend that the honeymoon was full of surprises. That would be dishonest and downright stupid. And nobody would believe it. No, if memory serves, it was a normal sun holiday. I know I got drunk quite a few times, His Nibs had given up drink for good already. When he was about thirty he woke up one morning with a roaring hangover and said he was giving up drinking for good and actually did it! This is not an urban legend. It’s absolutely true. I was so impressed I married him. No, sadly our honeymoon isn’t memorable for the high jinx and chandelier swinging it might have, but didn’t, involve. Our honeymoon is memorable because of the trip home. His Nibs and I don’t really have much luck in airports or with air travel in general. I mean in an everyday way, not in the “strangers put heroin in my luggage and I got ten years in the Bangkok Hilton” kind of way. If there is ever going to be a problem or delay on a flight, it’s always on our flight. We were only in the air for about forty five minutes when this plane lost pressure and dropped from 37,000 feet to 12,000 feet. There was a very sudden sensation like going downhill on a roller coaster, and the oxygen masks dropped out of the ceiling. Obviously, everybody got a bit of a fright. I am not able to stay awake in planes, so I was very happily dozing when all this drama started. We were absolutely not helped by the young and inexperienced-looking steward, and I am not joking about this, who ran down the aisle of the plane waving his hands and squealing “Jesus Christ, oh Christ almighty!!” which perhaps unsurprisingly, caused all out panic. They always make it sound, in the safety demonstration, as if you just pop the mask over your mouth and carry on. This is not what happens, or at least it didn’t happen on the plane we were in. The mask over my seat dropped just a couple of inches. Still fairly dozy, I looked at His Nibs, waiting for an explanation. He was kind enough to fill me in with the words “We’re in big trouble here, put that mask on you, and brace yourself”,before he started pulling on his mask. Bewildered, I grabbed my mask, which didn’t move. I gave it another tug, no go. I ended up taking off my seat belt, (strictly forbidden in the circumstances), standing up and actually swinging out of the mask in my attempt to bring it down to face level. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I couldn’t do it. Eventually His Nibs noticed. This was our honeymoon, these days I could be doing the hula hula in a grass skirt (God forbid) and he wouldn’t notice Anyway, he fixed the mask for me. It was very soon after this that I realised that the captain was giving us too much information. In an ideal situation, I think the captain would come on the speaker and announce that we had lost pressure, but not to worry, he knew what he was doing, and he’d tell us anything we needed to know about. This would be done in a soothing and professional sounding voice. No such
luck. He decided that the best course of action would be to tell us everything that happened, as it happened. So we spent the next ninety minutes being given nuggets of information like“We were going to do an emergency landing in Italy but I don’t think we can keep the plane up over the mountains. Rather than risk it, we’re going to go down around the boot of Italy and try to do an emergency landing in Spain instead”. This information was no help to us. There’s always one in every group, and somebody started a decade of the Rosary. I just sat there, wondering what he meant by “trying” to do an emergency landing, with the Hail Mary ringing in my ears. We were a lot less hysterical than I would have expected. As a matter of fact we spent a few happyish minutes talking about how if you have to go, at least a plane crash is more interesting and glamorous than being run over by a moped. Although we could see land outside the window for the duration of the flight to Spain, we stayed in the air. Even the steward seemed to calm down a bit. Possibly because his colleague, a far more professional person in my opinion, was holding his hand and telling him not to worry, that the captain knew what he was doing and to have faith. The emergency landing was a success, and after a few hours in an abandoned air hangar the plane was pronounced safe for us. So we got on it and came home to two discoveries. One, the code on the security gates of our building had changed during our absence and we had to climb over the 6 foot high vertically barred wrought iron gates, and get my extremely heavy suitcase over it ,to gain entrance. At five o’clock in the morning. And two, that our little adventure had made the front page of the Irish Times.

Confessions of a beauty snob… BY SARAH CANNING
a fresh application. Well done to Tan Organic, another great Irish product. Safe enough for pregnant women and great for those of you who are conscious about putting chemicals and nasty things on your skin. Available at O’Connell’s Pharmacy, Unicare, Sam McCauleys, Whites.
S
o it’s goodbye to our summer and good riddance to it. If like me you are lacking in Vitamin D, and you haven’t had as much as a single ray of sunshine on your bones all summer, fear not, help is at hand. I have two tanning products that I want to tell you all about that will at least make you look like you’ve been away!
TanOrganic
12
This is an Irish brand which famously featured on the well-known TV series ‘Dragon’s Den’ a couple of years ago. TanOrganic contains 95% certified organic tanning ingredients and is a natural way and safe way to give you a glow. When applied this tan has no smell and it dries relatively quickly. It was easy to apply as it has a good guide colour, and within a few hours I had a nice natural glow. I applied only once so the colour was very natural, however for a deeper colour you would need to apply a couple of more times. The only problem I had with this tan was getting it off. I found it very hard to scrub away as I would with any other tan. I then discovered their Tan Erase glove which was super. The glove immediately takes away all the left over patchy bits and also exfoliates so you are ready for
♥♥♥
Vita Liberata Phenomenal 2-3 week Tan I’ve had so many people asking me if this stuff really works before they buy it, because at €46 it’s certainly not cheap. Having tried this product I have discovered that yes it does work, but only providing that you mind it like a baby. In other words, you must apply three times, moisturise and exfoliate in between preferably using their other products. After three applications I was left with a very natural and dark tan. My skin was smooth and hydrated, and the tan was still glowing two and a half weeks later. But don’t be fooled, maintenance is key here. If you are going to try this out, you need to be disciplined in order to make it last. One of the secrets is to have luke warm showers using a gentle non oily shower wash. Hot water will strip the tan from your skin, as will strong shower gels etc. Avoid chlorine, oily moisturisers, and prep your skin well before applying. No doubt a very exciting product and the first I’ve seen of its kind. Things can only get better with this new concept, So here’s looking to a tan that will last forever and require no maintenance (oh if only)! Available at O’Connell’s Pharmacy. Whites, Ailish’s. ♥♥♥
Laser Teeth Whitening Here’s my verdict… I want to know your opinions on Laser Teeth Whitening, has anyone had it done? Please go to our Facebook page, and let me know your opinions. I had this horrible treatment done a little over a year ago and my verdict on it is that it doesn’t work. It’s not a nice experience, and it costs a small fortune. Do not waste your money. Instead, invest in a good bleaching kit from your dentist, and bleach every few weeks until you’ve achieved your desired shade of whiteness. Do watch out for sensitivity, because it will happen. I use sensitive toothpaste which I rub onto my teeth before and after bleaching and it helps stop the pain. Also, any whitening kits you can buy over the counter don’t work either. For me, bleaching is the only option that works. Am I wrong?
We have set up a beauty page for this blog on our Facebook page, so please come and join our page and share your opinions.
Next month....
I will be discussing Aloe Vera Gel, Permanent Make Up, and Shellac Nails. Until then, contact us on facebook or mail me at

At Lorimat Valuations we provide a comprehensive appraisal of your valuables. Having spent a number of years working in the insurance industry we are perfectly placed to make a professional assessment of your jewellery ensuring you get the correct level of cover in the event of a loss. Market Cross Shopping Centre Cross Shopping Centre and giving our customers an incentive to spend within our shops, such as our car competition, anyone who spends €10 in any shop in Market Cross can be in with a chance to win a brand new Skoda car so that’s a perfect reason to visit the shopping centre!
Why should people visit Market Cross Shopping Centre? Paddy: Market Cross shopping centre
In 1335 a Market Cross was erected in the centre of Kilkenny where local traders gathered to buy and sell their wares. Today this tradition still lives on albeit in a more modern fashion with the aid of Facebook, Twitter and the like! We caught up with Manager, Paddy Ryan and Assistant Manager, Lesley Cleere of the Market Cross Shopping Centre. When did Market Cross first open it’s doors? Paddy: I started working at Market
Cross Shopping Centre in 1993 and in March of 1994 we opened with only two shops, a fashion shop and Superquinn. We were still putting down tiles in the centre at four oclock in the morning the night before it opened!
What are the main challenges facing you in the current climate? Paddy: The toughest challenge facing
us in these times are that the spend is lower which make’s it difficult for business to continue to have stability.
Lesley: Our Traffic through the
centre is still strong, however we are aware this does not always transfer into sales for our tenants. In the past we have had loads of entertainment in the centre but while it did increase footfall, it didn’t increase spending in the shops, so we have now had to look at other ways of promoting Market
14
is very much community focused. It’s a great meeting point for people and a great focal point with the post office, credit union and banks in the Heart Of The City; We also have a great mix of shops from Superquinn, Penneys and Heatons to the local independent shops such as Radical and Happytimes along with our other 35 great shops!!!
Lesley: The Kilkenny Arts Festival
had great energy with a feel good factor around Kilkenny City and the Market Cross Shopping Centre.
Do you think social media such as Facebook and twitter are a help or a hindrance? Lesley: I think any medium to
encourage promotion and awareness of our brands are good. We ran a street competition on Facebook recently where we did a fashion show/ train through the centre whilst also keeping an eye out for the best dressed person. We increased our page likes by 250 and the winner ended up with 185 likes. Social media works to promote style and fashion and it’s a great way to showcase our shops.
Do you have any upcoming events? Paddy: We’re currently running our biggest ever competition at the moment in association with Laharts Garage and the Kilkenny People. Customers of Market Cross Shopping Centre are in with a chance to win a new Skoda Fabia car whenever they spend €10 or more in any shop within the centre. At the moment it looks like we will have 50,000 entries or more so it’s going very well and this is a fantastic tool for us to monitor the demograhics of our customers to aid future marketing plans.
Lesley: We are promoting the competition on Beat FM & KCLR radio, The Kilkenny People is a partner and we have had a great response from our national billboard campaign. I’m also actively involved in the upcoming Kilkenny Fashion Week, working closely with the committee and we are looking forward to this event taking place between October 10th to 13th. No doubt we’ll be supporting the Kilkenny Senior Hurling team in the All Ireland and we will also be promoting health and fitness throughout September.
What’s your plan for the future? Paddy: Our main job here is to
support the businesses that are in the centre in a sustainable way.
What sets you apart from other shopping centres in the area? Lesley: As Paddy said, Market Cross
Shopping Centre is very community focused and we have run great promotions and family fun days such as the ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ and ‘A New You’ competition over the years whilst also raising alot of money for charities. More recently we have been working closely with Kilkenny City Centre Business Association. Overall there is a personal touch with this shopping centre, Paddy has been here since before it opened and our focus has always been about the customer and providing support to the shops and businesses within the centre. If by some miracle you run out of things to do during your stay in Kilkenny city, or you simply want to see what else the county has to offer, then read on.....Each month we will pick a beautiful destination roughly twenty minutes outside Kilkenny city for you to visit. This month we have selected the Tullaherin Round Tower and ecclesiastical site, Co. Kilkenny. Getting there…. A

Using Kilkenny Castle as the starting point, turn left away from the centre of Kilkenny and head southeast towards the Bennettsbridge road following the Castle road. At the roundabout take the second exit for Bennettsbridge, the R700, and continue along this road until you come into the village of Bennettsbridge. As you enter the village you will cross over a large stone humpback bridge and you will see the corner house pub straight in front of you. Take the road to the left of this signed for Gowran. Drive along this road for roughly 2km before taking the first exit on the right which should be signed for Tullaherin. Continue along this road for 3km and you will eventually see the round tower and signs for the ruins of the ecclesiastical site on your left hand side. So what’s it all about? The round tower at Tullaherin ecclesiastical site was built around the 11th century. It is situated close to the nave and chancel of a ruined medieval parish church. The eastern portion of the nave with antae, a distinguishing feature of early built stone churches, possibly dates to the 10th century.
20
The tower would have been built to protect the inhabitants of the church and their belongings but another important function of the round tower was to house the church bell to call people to mass and perhaps warn people of raids and marauders in their locality. The remainder of the church has undergone several periods of renovation and refurbishment from the 12th to the 17th centuries. A damaged ogham stone has been recently placed at the southern wall of the church close to the tower base. The foundation of the church is attributed to St. Ciarán of Seir. The surrounding field systems show evidence of extensive earth works indicating a continued occupation of the site from as early as the 10th century. The tower itself stands at 22.5m in height for which the top 3m of masonry are a later addition of stone work. The tower has been constructed from sandstone which was well coursed and dressed which is a testament to the skill of the craftsmen who built it over 1000 years ago. However, most of its distinguishing features have all but been destroyed by now. The doorcase has been completely robbed out leaving an irregular hole which has now been blocked up with a rectangular pillar. The original opening/entrance into the tower stood some 3.7m above the ground level facing north-east. The tower would have been accessed by means of either a timber ladder or a rope ladder making it difficult to attack and gain entry. There are four windows on the original body of the tower and all are small and lintelled. The later upper tower windows are of similar build but not as long. There is some nice masonry work in the windows with finely dressed and chamfered jambs with cut lintels. The tower was recorded in the Annals as being damaged by a lightning strike in the year 1121 when a student was hit and killed by a falling stone. It is most likely that the upper 3m of the tower was repaired after this event.

Dara O Briain is a stand-up comedian, and television presenter, best known in the UK for hosting BBC’s Mock the Week, and in Ireland for hosting RTÉ 2’s The Panel. Dara is one the few performers to host successful comedy shows in both the UK and his native Ireland at the same time. He started his career in television as a children’s presenter on RTÉ whilst performing his first stand-up gigs on the Irish comedy circuit, after studying at University College, Dublin, where he studied Mathematical Physics. Dara came to prominence in Ireland as host of topical panel show Don’t Feed The Gondolas (1998-2000). He had to leave the show midway through its fifth season in order to perform at the Adelaide and Melbourne comedy festivals. Dara later co-founded the television production company Happy Endings Productions, whose most famous show in Ireland is The Panel (2003-onwards). The show has become one of the most talked about shows in Ireland and was twice nominated for the Best Entertainment show IFTA (Irish Film and Television Award). His big break in UK television came in 2003 when he became host of BBC2’s Live Floor Show. This led to an appearance as guest and, ultimately, four appearances as guest host of the popular news quiz, Have I Got News For You.
HOPE SPRINGS is a look at a married couple’s attempt to keep romance and interest in their relationship. It stars film veterans Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as the married couple. They struggle to reclaim that spark that brought them together almost three decades before. They enlist the help of a therapist played by Steve Carrell to help them overcome this bad patch in their marriage. Jones character is a straight laced accountant against Streep as a complacent homemaker. They are a couple who have lost all intimacy in their long marriage. It has its comic moments but is also touched with sadness as you witness the loss of love and open communication between this long standing couple. They go on a couple’s vacation in ‘Hope Springs’ to see if they can regain their love.

Guerilla Days In Ireland Watergate Tel: 056 7761674 September 25th - 26th 8pm Admission €16/€12
Guerilla Days in Ireland is undoubtedly one of the greatest biographical accounts of the War of Independence ever written, and its author Tom Barry, one of the most brilliant and controversial figures. In 1915, during World War 1, he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery at Cork and became a soldier in the British Army. He fought in Egypt, Russia, Italy and France; he also fought in the infamous battle of Kut-el-Amara-in present day Iraq. There, in a war communiqué posted to the front, Barry first heard of the Easter Rising. In 1920, soon after his return home, Barry joined the 3rd West Cork Brigade of the Irish Republican Army. This thrilling production is a world first in its presentation of Barry’s account. Adapted & Directed by Neil Pearson
