Patrick Connaughton, of the South East Drugs Task Force, says some users had used the ‘drought’ in supply to try and wean themselves off the drug. He warned users to avoid the current batches of heroin on our streets and reminded those in need that help is available throughout the county. If you have been affected, you can contact Patrick (in confidence): 085 7888326

Cllr. Maurice Shortall says the road is included in the Three Year Restoration Programme but the schedule of works needs

to be brought forward as a matter of urgency. “I will be making a strong case to have the road included this year and also to address drainage issues. The road has taken a battering and there are a number of sections which are hazardous and dangerous, said Cllr Shortall.

DICK BRENNAN — AN APPRECIATION

O

UR FRIEND, Dick, Wolfe Tone Street, Kilkenny and Ballingarry passed away quietly on January 27. The twinkling eyes have closed for the last time, but in his almost 90 years, Dick has left his family, friends and acquaintances, the better for having known him. Dick generated happiness ss and fun. He took great pride in his working life, where he wass e, so close to God and nature, in his love of gardening. Such was his love of the soil, that after his retirement, he continued to maintain gardens and lawns. He was deeply religious and was a regularr Massgoer in St John’s. His other great passion was hurling, especially ed on Tipperary hurling. He played the Ballingarry senior hurling team which, for the ďŹ rst time, won the South Tipperary championship in 1949. His nephews, Tommy and Martin, won All-Ireland hurling medals with Tipp at U21 and intermediate. His grand-nephew, Nigel Cleere, won an All-Ireland minor hurling medal with Tipp in 1996. Dick was a Manchester United fan. He met Roy Keane in Old Trafford and took

great pride in his grandson, Gavan Holohan of Hull City FC (pictured on right). My own favourite memories of Dick revolve around the many occasions we travelled together to hurling matches. When a match was concluded, a stop at ‘Mary Willies’ was compulsory. Dick was in his element, seeking and giving giv views on how Tipp perfo performed. After a drink or two, the hurling discussion would co continue as we journeyed back to Kilkenny. Meetings of the S Slievenamon Association iin Kilkenny, were also d dominated by hurling d debates. At the A.G.M. of the Sl Slievenamon Association on November 26, Dick was prese presented with a framed colour photog photograph of the 2010 All-Ireland champions by manager, Liam Sheedy. Our sympathy to his daughters, Geraldine and Marie, his son, Tony, his grand-children and to all his other relatives. Dick will always be remembered as long as a sliotar is struck. We pray that he has now joined his beloved wife, Nan, in the green ďŹ elds of Heaven, where many a Kilkenny- Tipp game will be replayed.

J.F.

Loreto girls shine in wind and rain NIAMH LEAHY LORETO SECONDARY SCHOOL

47 athletes contest South Leinster Schools Cross Country title

A GROUP of 47 talented and enthusiastic students from Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny travelled to Carlow for the South Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships. Events were in the hurling club beside Dr Cullen Park, GAA Grounds with all schools in the South Leinster region battling it out in high standard competition. It was a wet and windy day, but spirits were not dampened by the miserable conditions and all students ran exceptionally well. In fact it was a joy to watch big numbers of girls displaying a wonderful mix of courage and determination as they battled for the glory of their schools. The school running club introduced many new students to the cross country championships

Inter Team: Megan O’Keeffe (9th), Niamh Leahy (12th), Annie Condren (14th), Orla Dooley (19th), Kate Walsh (20th) and Mary Pat O’Sullivan (21st) and many were placed in the ďŹ rst 70, with up to 200 competitors in a race. The newcomers did the Loreto club and school proud and the probability was that supporters were watching future champions. New members will keep up the hard work every Monday and Wednesday as training continues in preparation for future events. Two individuals and two teams qualiďŹ ed for the Leinster Championships in Santry Park, Dublin, an event which could bring further success to a Kilkenny school which promotes a plethora of sports at several levels. The individuals were Aisling Mc Donough (1st year) who came 6th in minor and Orla Mc Philips (5th Year) who was 7th in senior. With the junior team 1st and the inter team 2nd, 14 students will represent Loreto Kilkenny in the Leinster Championship.

Junior Team: Anna Sheehan (5th), Aoibhe Richardson (13th), Linsoy Dillon (14th), Margaret Calbeck (15th), Nicola Murphy (17th) and Eimear Mc Mullan (21st)

FANNY AND DANNY WERE SPOTTED HEADING FOR THEIR FAVOURITE ‘SPEAKER’S CORNER’ AT THE PARADE, A GOOD SIZED CROWD WAS NEVER FAR BEHIND. THE CHEER OF THE EVENING WENT UP WHEN FANNY REFERRED TO THE NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS OF THE CORPORATION AS A BUNCH OF BANANAS. SHE SAID THEY REMINDED HER OF BANANAS BECAUSE WHEN THEY WENT INTO CITY HALL FIRST, THEY WERE GREEN. THEN CAME THE PUNCH LINE: “BUT THEY SOON TURNED YELLOW”, SHE RAPPED, TO THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE

REPORTER WISHLIST THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS WEDGE ISSUE FOR all the benefits of wearing high heels without having to suffer their ill effects you could consider investing in a pair of wedges. They are the perfect high heel as they are built for walking in and are extremely versatile. There are few outfits, skirt lengths or jeans that look great with a pair of wedges. These brown wedge lace up ankle boots from New Look are ideal for this time of year as they would look equally good with a pair of warm winter tights or under a pair of jeans or wide leg trousers. The best thing of all about wedges is that they give definition and shape to heavy ankles making them appear thinner. Score!

This season’s jumpsuit is a far cry from the ‘80s batwing disco numbers we are all trying to forget. They are available in a wide range of flattering styles so it’s just a matter of trying a few until you find the one that’s right for your body type. This snake print jumpsuit from A|Wear is great value at €45 and comes with a material belt so that you can cinch in your waist and give yourself a great hourglass figure. The key with jumpsuits is to make sure you don’t wear them too tight and to keep accessories to a minimum.

It contains witch hazel, a natural astringent, to absorb excess oil and impurities from second-day hair. It also contains aloe vera to replenish moisture and improve shine and softness and citrus extracts to leave hair smelling and feeling refreshed. It also has the unexpected benefit of giving your hair wonderful volume.

STRESS has become an acceptable part of everyday life but it’s not something that people have to tolerate. There are plenty of options out there that can help. Pessimism and anxiety are common place and are considered simply realistic,” she said. She is offering an Energy Clearing Workshop from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 19 (€60), a Space Clearing Workshop from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 20 (€60) and drumming at 7pm on Friday 25 (€20). BROW BEATEN EYEBROWS frame the face and a perfect arch can act as a mini facelift. The idea of threading, an ancient Indian way of removing hair, can seem a bit scary to some, but it is actually a lot less stressful than many other methods of hair removal. Threading involves twisting a loop of thread around the root of unwanted hair and plucking it. The process is very quick and can be used to shape eyebrows or remove hair from the upper lip, chin or sides of the face. Threading is available from €12.95 at Mint. Return of the fringe: Tips and trends for head-turning style

W

E are now almost a couple of months into a new year and a new decade so it is not surprising that new hair trends are beginning to emerge. Fringes are back with a vengeance with blunt, bold fringes a la Jane Birkin being one of the hottest trends right now. Unfortunately they are not for everyone so make sure you ask your stylist’s advice before going for the chop. There’s generally a fringe out there for everybody, whether it’s a full fringe or a flattering side fringe, just make sure you find the perfect one for you. If you don’t want something permanent you could always invest in a clip-in fringe. Every shape, colour and texture you want is available on ebay from as little as €4.70. Another trend that is going to be big this year is the extreme side parting. This look is very low on commitment and works extremely well with curls, straight hair, buns or plaits. Try it out and if you don’t like it you can get rid of it in minutes. This season you can also kiss goodbye to the top knot and make way for low buns and plaits and the messier the better. Finger waves are also going to be huge, helped in no small part by the popularity of

Oscar nominated film ‘The King’s Speech’. A low bun with finger waves was the hairstyle favoured by Helena Bonham Carter’s character in the movie, Queen Elizabeth. The look was also all over the spring summer catwalks and was much favoured by Prada in particular. While finger waves might look complicated they are actually very easy to do. All you need is a few sectioning clips, hairspray and a little bit of patience. Get your stylist to show you how or there are some great, easy to follow tutorials on youtube.com. Colourwise, blonde is still in vogue but the tones are getting warmer with hints of gold making an appearance. Blacks and brunettes are going in the opposite direction with cool undertones, such as violet based brunettes, coming to the fore. Red is also still as popular as ever with Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and Florence and the Machine being the two most desirable shades. A word of warning though: Do not try to achieve this look at home. Red is one of the hardest colours to get right and can be one of the most difficult to lift out if it all goes badly wrong. Other key looks that are going to continue through 2011 will be

balayage highlights as favoured by Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. This method of colouring gives a very natural looking result that is very low maintenance. Also popular will be ombre highlights – a method of colouring that almost gives the effect of having dip dyed your hair.

Style icons: Jane Birken, Drew Barrymore and Helena Bonham Carter have all blazed a trail at the beginning of this year

THE Showband Era is the title of an extraordinary exhibition of memorabilia on display in Graignamanagh Library until Friday, February 25. Before the days of electric guitars, keyboards and synthesizers, brass instruments dominated the music of Ireland. The true era of the Irish showbands actually started in the mid 1950s, but really didn’t catch fire and explode until the 1960s. What is certain is that a showband had just two main jobs – to entertain

the crowds and keep them dancing. Take a trip down memory lane to a bygone era in our musical past in Graignamanagh library. This nostalgic exhibition features original posters and photographs of showbands, some musical instruments and music. FILM FAIR GAME Director Doug Liman

T

HIS is a great return to form for Doug Liman who made the ďŹ rst ‘Bourne’ ďŹ lm and is the best example of a conspiracy thriller in years that entertains and informs in equal measure. It tells the true story of Valerie Palme a covert CIA Agent who leads a double life telling lies in the ďŹ eld to ďŹ ght terrorism and at dinner parties in Washington where she pretends to her friends that she works in ďŹ nance. The only person who is aware of her subterfuge is her husband Joseph Wilson a veteran diplomat whose idealism destroys their lives when he decides to ďŹ ght the lies spewing from the White House. I have not mentioned the word ‘Iraq’ or ‘George Bush’ yet since this is the reason nobody went to see this ďŹ lm in America or why it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. This however is a movie which only touches on these subjects since

its real focus is the back rooms of Washington and the bedrooms of the Plame’s. By looking at the corruption at the heart of the administration this ďŹ lm shows how Scotty Libby the ice president’s chief of staff bullied his agenda out of the

CIA and twisted the facts to ruin anyone in his way. What really gives this movie authenticity is the presence of Sean Penn as Joseph Wilson. Knowing about his activism during the Iraq conict this ďŹ lm can be read as an

examination of the damage his own opinions have done on his acting career. Here he is allowed to vent this frustration and it is a pleasure to behold to see him create this awed but admirable character. Noami Watts is well cast

too as a woman whose whole life is about hiding from the truth which she now has to confront. The scenes between them are the central drama of the ďŹ lm and their arguments show how messy both love and war can be.

This movie is essentially about a marriage which may surprise many of Doug Liman’s fans. Starting off with the ashy comedies like ‘Swingers’ and ‘Go’ he then switched to creating the ‘Bourne’ franchise before Paul Greengrass took over with the two superior sequels. This can be seen as his response to Greengrass who failed to make an exciting story with the material of the Iraq War in ‘Green Zone’. ‘Fair Game’ is a very mature but entertaining work recalling the superb ďŹ lms of the ‘70s like Alan J Pakula’s ‘All the President’s Men’ or Sydney Pollack’s ‘Three Days of the Condor’. So for anyone who loves a movie that excites and makes you think afterwards this is the ticket. By concentrating on the human relationships that are threatened by conict we are shown how our private lives are ruled by public decisions. Surely there has never been a more timely ďŹ lm in this country about someone losing their job because of a lousy government. — BY DARRAGH BYRNE
