Locks are key for charity’s funds AISLING HURLEY AHURLEY@KILKENNYREPORTER.IE
HAIR today, gone tomorrow was deďŹ nitely the case for a brave Kilkennyman who sacriďŹ ced his locks for charity. Well known community activist and IT worker, Mick Greene, had his head shaved as part of Today FM’s ‘Shave or Dye’ 2011 campaign in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. The newly bald Mick, who was known for his outstanding head of thick curly hair, decided to part with his crowning glory after hearing a harrowing story about a six year old boy who died from cancer. He explained: “I was coming back from Dublin last week and I heard the story on the Matt Cooper Show. I have a six year old girl myself so I cried my eyes out coming down in the car. I thought, ‘It’s only hair and it will raise money and that money can do great things.’â€? The last time Mick had short hair was about eight years ago. “I had long hair when I went to college and in about ‘99 I shaved it all off and was a skinhead for about ďŹ ve years. My wife, Nicola, met me when I was a skinhead so hopefully she won’t run out the door when she sees me,â€? he laughed. Mick is a father of four young girls, Iseult, Caoimhe, Saraid and Muireann. The Shave or Dye’ campaign is ongoing. To donate log onto http://tiny.cc/f74ib.
Hair today, gone tomorrow for community activist, Mick Greene Father of four, Mick Greene was moved to take part in ‘Today FM’s ‘Shave or Dye 2011’’ after hearing the story, on the Matt Cooper Show, of a young boy who died of cancer. The event is ongoing. If you would like to sponsor Laura Hidalgo (opposite) with her challenge, or join her with your own effort, contacts details are on page 5

Big hand for opposable thumbs and for our climbing Mount Improbable
I
PICKED up a very newsy free magazine in St Luke’s General Hospital called ‘The Waiting Room’ and spotted a very interesting article by Maureen Corbett. It was all about our hands and it set me thinking. We tend to take our hands for granted and give little thought as to how wonderful they are. Life would be difficult without them. The ďŹ rst thing that many mothers do is to check out that their new born have all their ďŹ ngers and toes. We need our ďŹ ngers to do just about every thing. Babies use their hands from the moment they are born, hands are a great
way of communicating. I think of simple actions like opening a door, turning a tap, setting an alarm, making a cup of tea. We scratch with our ďŹ ngers, lace our shoes. I could mention so many different actions carried out by our hands and ďŹ ngers. Our hands and ďŹ ngers are hugely important and we should sympathise with people who may not have the use of their hands. Ms. Corbett quoted Sir Isaac Newton: “In the absence of any other proof, the thumb alone would convince me of God’s existenceâ€? So let us be thankful every day for the wonderful gift of hands.

Caring community helps itself THE CARING community of a North Kilkenny town is promoting a ‘self help weekend’. This is to help the local branch of the St Vincent de Paul Society with the simple idea of raising money locally — to be spent locally. The weekend of fundraising is from February 25 to 27. All monies will go to the local Society which has found that in tough economic times, requests for assistance have left resources low.
Secured donation boxes will be placed in local outlets and people will be invited to make contributions. On the Saturday night, a cabaret will be held in Kavanagh’s Bar , The Square, featuring the music of the popular Smiggy and Jackie. There will be no cover charge but people will be encouraged to make donations. The Society has a conďŹ dential number for anyone who might need their support: 0857291832.

IRELAND’S leading fashion TV show ‘Off The Rails’ is coming to MacDonagh Junction, Kilkenny on Thursday. RTE’s glamorous presenters, Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon will be on hand to bring together all the elements of the programme live in Kilkenny as the show continues its nationwide tour in the fashion capital of the South East. ‘Off The Rails’ is back and it’s bigger and better than ever before. This season Ireland’s favourite fashion team will hit the road with their catwalk on a mission to bring style to the nation. The new series comes to MacDonagh Junction with an afternoon of fashion, beauty and on the spot style tips that won’t break the budget. FILM PAUL Director Greg Mottola
F
ans expecting ‘Shaun of The Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’ will be disappointed with this Simon Pegg/Nick Frost flick. However, taken on it’s own merits it is a blast. It tells the story of two English geeks — Graeme and Clive — who go to Comic Con and afterwards take a RV road trip around the UFO crash sites of America. Their journey becomes really exciting when they meet an actual alien called Paul who they must help escape from the authorities while learning life lessons about their humanity and otherness. Along the way the genre conventions from both science fiction and the road movie are sent up with the trademark cheekiness of the two leads. The real problem for ‘Empire’ magazine readers will be the fact that Gregg Mottola is directing and not Edgar Wright. Motolla is a fine comedy film
maker- both ‘Superbad’ and ‘Adventureland’ were hilarious while having a lot of substance beyond the crude humour. However he lacks Wright’s uncompromising approach to cinema as witnessed in his solo run ‘Scott Pilgrim’ where every attempt to up the ante creatively is taken at the expense sometimes of commercial appeal. The pleasure here is the relationship between Pegg and Frost who co-wrote the script and their long standing friendship is drawn on for many of the gags. Recalling the slacker humour in ‘Spaced’ it peppers the film with many geeky references mainly from Steven Spielberg who this movie homages and spoofs in equal measure. Paul is a foul-mouthed version of ET as voiced by Seth Rogen and most of the comedy is based on the incongruity of his utterances when compared to Spielberg’s more saintly creations. Personally as an ‘Arrested Development’ fan the supporting parts are what makes the whole thing ignite. Jason Bateman proves himself the master of deadpan once again in
the role of the FBI Agent who is chasing them. But the real kudos has to go to Jeffrey Tambor who devours
the part of an egotistical fantasy writer Adam Shadowchild with comic abandon. Although originally
envisioned as a cameo part for Stephen King instead Tambor creates the most enjoyable character in the
movie and its deepest belly laughs. Though not a complete failure, as some more nerdy reviewers would have you believe, there was a certain reluctance on Pegg/Frost’s part to push the envelope in their first Hollywood movie together. They have used the excuse in interviews that the cost of the CGI forced them to abandon their more radical intentions starting off. Cheaper computer effects are now available, as seen in last years ‘Monsters’, so perhaps they would have been better off making it outside of the studio system and on their own terms. This will no doubt get more bums on seats than ‘Scott Pilgrim’ but I would really encourage people to rent the latter on DVD after going to see this throwaway piece of popcorn. Though only mildly diverting in comparison, ‘Paul’ has enough of the fanboy magic to keep you entertained and hopefully when Edgar Wright rejoins them they can make something that changes the rules as well as giving you a giggle. — BY DARRAGH BYRNE
