ast week saw the announcement from Bord Gais that customers will be hit with a 12% hike in electricity. Bord Gais have also said that they want a 28% increase in gas prices. Generally the trend would be for their competitors ESB and Airtricity to follow suit. Increasing the insulation in you home will help to reduce the energy used to heat your home and help to combat the energy price increases. Holden Brothers are a family owed and operated company in Kilkenny installing Cavity Wall Insulation and Attic Insulation to help improve the energy efficiency of homes. Grants are still available through SEAI to help with the cost of improving the insulation and heating systems in your home. A cash grant of â‚Ź520 is available from SEAI to improve the cavity wall and attic insulation in homes built prior to 2006. The application
process is very simple and can be applied for on line at : http://www.seai.ie/Grants/ Home_Energy_Saving_Scheme Holden Brothers are registered Cavity Wall and Attic Insulation installers with SEAI. Holden Brothers install Supernova Cavity Wall Insulation which is manufactured by envirotherm Insulation Systems Ltd in Ballyhale, Co. Kilkenny. ‘Supporting the local economy is very important. Shopping local helps to keep jobs in Kilkenny.’ says Pat Holden, owner of Holden Brothers. Pat is originally from Callan and has worked in construction all his life. Holden Brothers was established by Pat and his sons Sean, Brian and Patrick in 2000 installing gutters, fascia and soffit. In 2008 Pat expanded the business into insulation. ‘We pride ourselves on giving an honest,
competitive and personal service to all our customers. Every house is individually surveyed to determine the solution best suited for it. We give a free no obligation quotation to all our customers. For the summer months we have been running a special 10% discount offer. We understand the extra ďŹ nancial pressures on families in the summer and realise that insulting their homes may not seem like top priority. However with the combination of colder winters and rising utility bills it is important that people insulate their homes to the highest level possible. Anyone who presents the 10% will be entitled to the discount.’ „ If you would like your house surveyed for a free no obligation quotation please contact Holden Brothers on 056 77 66 112.

The play was first performed in Cork in February and won the ‘Best Original Writing’ award at the Irish Student Drama Festival in Galway. Niall is a founding member of Journeyman Productions and the company is no stranger to Kilkenny having previously performed the play to a packed house in the Set
Theatre, in aid of The Chernobyl Children’s Project. Written and Directed by Jody Quirke, the play is a ‘coming of age’ story of four boys growing up in a rural hurling parish. Their world revolves around the small local GAA club and their intense rivalry with a bigger club from a neighbouring town. The second act takes place a decade later with the boys in their early twenties when their childhood bonds of friendship and loyalty are truly tested.
Book of the week ‘WATER for Elephants’ by Sara Gruen is an enchanting novel about a circus struggling to keep afloat during the Depression era. The story is narrated by an old man who is bitter at being abandoned in a nursing home by his family. He vividly recalls his time as a vet for a travelling circus during the 1930s. He witnesses the violent
nature of cut-throat showmen and the code of survival among performers and working men. He also falls in love with the head animal trainer’s wife, Marlena. Gruen portrays the suffering of humans and animals as the equalizer between them, the thing that makes their differences irrelevant and the bonds between them all the more profound.

The Nintendo 3DS is a breakthrough in portable entertainment, a truly cutting-edge piece of hardware. The system opens up a whole new world of eye-popping gameplay possibilities. Gig of the week KILKENNY band SOULS play Ryan’s Bar, Friary Street this coming Saturday. SOULS is an aggressive, melodic, and powerful unit formed in Kilkenny in late 2010. The band consists of former Kerbdog and Wilt drummer Darragh Butler, singer, songwriter and guitarist Clive Barnes and former Kerbdog guitarist Billy Dalton on bass.
SOULS have opted to make their music an unpredictable, everchanging riff rock machine. An uncategorised and highly original act, they turn up the volume and shake the walls. Having packed the Set Theatre in May they now turn to the extremely intimate environs of Ryan’s Bar back room.
All proceeds go to the Irish Kidney Association. Two of Clive’s brothers suffer from an extremely rare kidney disease called ‘Cystinosis’ so it’s a cause close to his heart. The Kilo 1977 will play sets before and after the band. Tickets are €10 and are available from Rollercoaster Records on St Kieran’s Street.
Food of the Week GENERATIONS of the one family have provided Kilkenny and the South East with high quality dairy produce, from Cramers Grove Farm, since 1860. Their farmhouse ice creams, sorbets and frozen yoghurt are handmade with uncompromising care on their family farm at Cramers Grove in Kilkenny. The freshest milk and cream from their dairy cows are mixed daily in small batches and are then combined with the finest natural
ingredients to create a luxury ice cream. Their sorbets and frozen yoghurt are
made with the same attention and are bursting with real fruit. As their produce is made in the traditional way, using only fresh and natural ingredients, they contain no artificial additives, flavourings, colourings or preservatives. Stock up at ‘treats’ by Cramers Grove in the Goods Shed Market at MacDonagh Junction where they serve scrumptious frozen desserts, ice cream, sorbet, frozen yoghurt and milkshakes.

FILM Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 3D Director Dave Yates
T
he last in the series of films is definitely the best and can actually be enjoyed by someone like myself who has never liked the books. Ron, Hermione and Harry return to Hogwarts to find the last of the horcruxes and to fight the final battle with ‘he who shall not be named’. All the mysteries of the books are finally revealed and the romances that have been simmering are realized. There is also a few deaths of some beloved and not so loved characters along the way. It also contains the best twist in the entire series which is genuinely shocking and moving in equal measure. What makes this the most satisfying of them all is the fact that Hogwarts is destroyed. Personally I have found the nostalgia this series of books and films have for posh boarding schools to be deeply offensive and retrograde. To see the aristocratic education in Britain praised so blatantly is repellent and to give children worldwide an obsession with going there seems very odd. By seeing it in ruins it hopefully might prevent trailer park kids from Idaho dream of Eton. However what sets Rowling apart from other writers is not her setting but her fantastic array of characters. The problem has always been though that the adult thesps like Maggie Smith, Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon and Alan Rickman
KILKENNY REPORTER 20 07 2011
have blown the poor child actors off the screen. Here however David Yates manages the miraculous- actually getting decent performances from the three leads. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe were always horrible to watch. Each cringe inducing moment worst than the last. Very much drama school brats there was a really dislikable quality particularly to Watson’s ‘spiky’ Hermione. Radcliffe at least seems like a nice if talentless chap who actually lifts his game here as does Watson to a serviceable level. Rupert Grint though as Ron Weasley has always been the one to watch and when he finally gets to kiss Hermione a cheer went up. The effects as always are the things that amazed in these films. They have grown with the technology of CGI but are very English in the way they are done. It is always enjoyable to watch the mixture of hand crafted props being mixed with the whizz and bang of the computers. There is an organic quality to these effects unlike most Hollywood films in the same period and that will make these films timeless. However the 3-D adds very little here except for a few floaty bits and the odd camera track in. Not a perfect film- the postscript would have been lost by a more judicious editor in the film and book. If the series had been halved both in length and amount of episodes we would have been saved a lot of bother. The publishers and film producers wouldn’t then have extracted as much money from Muggle pockets. That is not to detract from the fact that this is a Harry Potter movie that people who hate the little blighter can be entertained by. - DARRAGH BYRNE
