in a psychiatric ward. Following her release from hospital, she returns to the prairie town of her childhood, where her mother lives in an old people’s home. Alone in a rented house, she rages and fumes and bemoans her sorry fate. Slowly, however, she is drawn into the lives of those around her.

Exhibition of the week ARTIST Niamh Curry is hosting an exhibition entitled ‘Imagine’ at ‘Castlecomer Discovery Park’ during Kilkenny Arts Festival from August 5 to 15. It explores the wondrous nature of a child’s imagination and the fantastic voyages it takes them on. at 3pm on Saturday with live music from ‘Crow Black Chicken’ and ‘Rescue Remedy’. All are welcome to attend. According to Niamh art exposes the thoughts and feelings, fears and hopes, nightmares and dreams of the artist to those who wish to see. “Art knows only the bounds of the talents, imagination and vision of the artist. It is not limited by the concerns of everyday life, although it may reflect them,” she says.

FILM Captain America: The First Avenger Director Joe Johnston
T
he Marvel Comics have transferred another of their comic book heroes successfully to the big screen for both nerds and people who don’t read panels alike. It is about Steve Rodgers a gutsy wimp who wants to enlist in World War 2 despite his asthma and slight frame. He is eventually spotted by Stanley Tucci a scientist who has formulated a serum to turn Steve into an augmented warrior to fight the Nazis. Thankfully his experiment works since Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is just about to obliterate the world. In the Pulitzer Prize winning novel about superheroes ‘The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay’ Michael Chabon proposes that Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and other inventors of comics were all Jewish boys who wrote these books to overturn the weak archetype of their race in a propaganda war against the `Ubermensch’ of Nazi mythology. This film is deeply indebted to that book as Chabon’s book was to the original ‘Captain America’ stories which were always a lot more sophisticated than the
character’s jingoistic name might suggest. Joe Johnston is very sensitive to the comic’s look and witty dialogue. This after all is the man who directed ‘The Rocketeer’ one of the most beautiful art deco movies ever made. He has long been a protege of Steven Spielberg making the best of the ‘Jurassic Park’ films and now here making a more convincing ‘Indiana Jones’ style flick than the master’s last attempt. He has a fine way with a set piece never letting the effects drown out the tension in the scene and always keeping the story on track without ever sacrificing the art direction. He is helped in no small way by the cast. Chris Evans manages the difficult task of making the CGI created nebbish credible as well pulling off the heroism in the later scenes without being too cocky. Hugo Weaving seems to be channeling the villains from ‘Raiders’ after the Ark burnt their faces off while Toby Young provides a nice foil to his egomania. Stanley Tucci is really endearing while Tommy Lee Jones as a grouchy general steals every exchange with some well timed one liners. All in all a rollicking entertainment with not a little depth and humour. It really sets up ‘The Avengers’ movie next summer which if it can combine the action and intelligence of both this and the superb ‘Thor’ then will be the blockbuster to beat in 2012. - DARRAGH BYRNE
