Eoin Colfer, author of the internationally-bestselling ‘Artemis Fowl’ series, takes
an h honest, t unsentimental ti t l look at growing up. Moving, magical and hilarious, ‘Holy Mary’ is a must-see for

Book of the week THERE’S never been a better time to be a woman: we have the vote and the Pill, and we haven’t been burnt as witches since 1727. However, a few nagging questions remain. Why are we supposed to get Brazilians? Should you get Botox? Why does your bra hurt? And why does everyone ask you when you’re going
to have a baby? Part memoir, part rant, Caitlin Moran answers these questions and more in ‘How To Be A Woman’– following her from her terrible 13th birthday (‘I am 13 stone, have no friends, and boys throw gravel at me’) through adolescence, the workplace, stripclubs, love, fat, abortion, TopShop, motherhood and beyond.
Product of the week BLACK garlic is taking the cooking world by storm. While it might look bizarre, it tastes delicious. It is made by fermenting whole bulbs of garlic at a high temperature, a process that results in black cloves. The taste is sweet and syrupy with hints of balsamic vinegar and tamarind. It is low in fat, rich in natural sugars,
leaves no trace of smell or bad breath and is loaded with twice as many antioxidants as normal raw garlic. It can be difficult to find stockists in Ireland but it is available from a number of websites and as its popularity grows it should start popping up in your local supermarket.
Pub of the week EVERY Wednesday night at The Field, they run their legendary SIN – ‘Service Industry Nights’ where they give it back to the people who make it happen. Those invited to come along on the night include staff of pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants. There are plenty of special offers including cut price drinks promotions, giveaways and a late bar.
The Field Bar at the corner of The Parade and High Street is a very popular venue for live music and regularly features local and visiting bands including Cuchulainn, Kiwi Paddy, Brand New Cadillac, The Briars and Revolver. It also has a sports theme inside with plenty of hurling memorabilia adorning the walls. It’s a very friendly spot and bar staff always offer a warm welcome to customers as they come through the door.

Food of the Week KELLS Wholemeal, Bennettsbridge is owned and managed by the Mosse family. With a heritage in flour milling that stretches back seven generations and several centuries, they continue that legacy by running a stoneground flour mill that makes a wide range of artisan wholemeal flours using traditional methods. Kells Wholemeal has developed quality cake and bread mixes, with particular expertise in the area of Irish soda breads and scones. They also import a comprehensive
range of seeds and grains including linseed, pumpkin seed, buckwheat, malted products, authentic French, Polish, spelt and rye flours. Their wholemeal products carry a unique nutty flavour and are genuine wholegrain wholemeals. This simply means that they carry the entire wheat grain crushed into a flour form. Their stoneground wholemeal flour recently featured on the menu of the State banquet for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to Ireland.
danleo’s mural and more music will be provided by special guests. There will also be an exhibition of danleo’s bold and impressive posters from recent Kilkenny gigs which will also be available to purchase as prints. Danleo, who studied animation and graphic design, has spent the past few years painting murals around Europe. He produces pieces using spray paint applied with a brush resulting in work that looks like it was created with vector software but have been painted by hand.

FILM The Tree of Life Director Terence Malick
M
alick follows the late flowering of masterpieces - “The Thin Red Line’ and ‘The New World’ with his greatest work. The story is more like a dream than a narrative. The elements that coexist are as follows- firstly a family in 1950’s Texas where a group of boys are raised by a taciturn father(Brad Pitt) and loving mother(Jessica Chastain), secondly an engineer(Sean Penn) in the present day who mourns the death of a brother many years previously and lastly the birth of the universe. If you are looking for a tale to cling on to this film will bore you. However if you surrender to it nothing in the history of cinema will thrill you as much. Look upon as a mediation or a symphony about existence and you will find so much to enjoy. I think people who have suffered the death of a child will gain a lot from watching it too since it dramatizes the stages of grief beautifully. Malick is one of a handful of poets working in film. This reminded me a lot of Irish writer John McGahern’s ‘Memoir’ where the two parents are movingly contrasted especially the sequences involving the mother which recalled McGahern’s lovingly detailed descriptions of his early life. The way
of nature or worldliness is in conflict with the way of grace or spirituality throughout. This tension between the two parents who represent these views on life is more exciting to sense than all the dull noise that makes up cinema today. Many critics have torn this apart since it dares to be an American art house film. It is only when something is in French or Russian that it is allowed to be profound in this medium for some reason. Some have accused it of ‘corniness’ but that earnest approach to the world is as old as Walt Whitman in American culture. The CGI scene with the dinosaurs which many have complained about fits in perfectly with Malick’s whole scheme and it is echoed touchingly in a later moment between two boys. It is a scarcity nowadays to see a piece of filmic art that is so gentle and tender. Not one scene is indulgent in it’s length nor is it unnecessary to the whole. The photography and editing are sublime. Two shots- one of birds passing a skyscraper and the other of a child playing with a baby will stay with you forever. The acting is as always with Malick secondary to the vision -Brad Pitt and Sean Penn blend themselves into background while Jessica Chastain and the children provide the more uplifting moments. So if you want to see a movie which will leave you with a more hushed sense of your surroundings make the pilgrimage to see this work of pure joy from that rarest of breeds- a living genius. - DARRAGH BYRNE
