LOCAL ATHLETES returned from the Leinster ‘A’ Cross Country Championships at Adamstown, Co Wexford with the satisfaction of knowing that each had given everything. This was laced with a generous cloak of exhaustion, cocooned for some with joy and, for one, with a modicum of disappointment. It was a marvellously entertaining day for vocal supporters. The U11 boys’ team set the tone over 1500m. From over 100 runners, Conor Clarke won gold. Killian Hogan followed up his Leinster debut by coming in the ďŹ rst half of the race at 39. Provincial championship ďŹ rst timer, Nicky Connolly was 53rd and novice, Sean O’Dornan, was 61st. The brilliant manner of Conor’s victory added to the excitement. Ross Connolly ďŹ nished 62nd in his U13 race over 2,500m. Lauren Dermody at U15 over 3,500m was 12th at one stage but lost ground to ďŹ nish 20th. Lauren’s personal heartbreak arises from the fact that she was the seventh Kilkenny runner home. Kilkenny won county gold but medals are awarded to the ďŹ rst six runners home. Andrew Dowd won bronze in 4000m U17 race. Sile Carroll competed in Intermediate women’s race.

Politicians have a licence to print money - for themselves

T

Susan Forristal, daughter of Dickie and Nellie Forristal, Dunnamaggin, Co Kilkenny who graduated as a solicitor recently from The Law Society, Blackhall Place, Dublin

HIS MONTH tends to get us down, everything is so gloomy, trees have lost their leaves, news is full of gloom and doom. The country is in a mess and the only people doing well are politicians. They will never experience what it is like to face a day with fear and trepidation. They won’t have to worry about where the next euro is coming from, or where they will get money to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads. They get interest free loans to buy a second house in Dublin and free utility expenses. Life is very good for them, they have staff helping them, they will tell you how hard they work, I am sure they do, and the long hours. I bet there are thousands who would love to take their places, delighted to do it for quarter of their salary.

how I was trying t i to t iimagine i h wonderful it must be for them when ‘they’ get out of bed. Everything in the garden is rosy, plenty of money in the bank, practically everything paid for by our people. They get paid a fat salary, huge tax-free expenses, and they recently got another rise of â‚Ź30,000 to help to pay staff. How many employers would love to get that money to sustain their business? They have warm homes because they can afford central heating. Ministers only have to hop into their chauffeur-driven cars. They get huge sums to pay staff and consultants, to do their work for them. There are so many who cannot afford to run a car because they are trying to keep their heads above water. Politicians will not be paying off a few euros a week to ensure that Santa comes, to

provide id a tturkey. k The most important task for politicians is thinking up ways to get as much as they can out of ordinary people, employers, the unemployed, people on social welfare, people on low wages. It would not cross their minds that families are hungry, that some families sit in the dark because they cannot afford electricity, that many parents who are up to their necks in debt, making sacriďŹ ces to give their children third level education. On top of everything, politicians have us terrorised about the Budget. We know that politicians put our little country into a mess. The sad part is that they are not going to suffer ďŹ nancially as a result of their dirty deeds. If you think seriously about it, being a politician is a ‘Licence to print money’, for themselves of course!

REPORTER WISH LIST THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS... Bathe in moisture OLIVE has been used in skin care for thousands of years because of its ability to increase moisture levels and improve skin elasticity. If you want to get your hands on this mega moisturising skin ingredient then try one of Ziaja’s wide range of olive based skincare products. This gorgeous shower gel €2.59 won’t harm or damage even the most irritable skin and helps protect against free radicals. Formulated to suit all skin types it perfectly smoothes and softens the skin. Ph balanced, does not disturb the protective epidermis layer. It can be bought in Kilkenny at Keane’s, John’s Street; MacEneany’s, High Street, Quirke’s, Castlecomer and Urlingford Pharmacy.

Detox your face! OFTEN we don’t release how many toxins end up in our skin from car fumes, second hand smoke and chemicals used in cleaning products. So every once in a while give your skin a detox with Natures Inspiration’s Rhassoul Clay.

Rhassoul Clay (also known as Red Moroccan Clay) is highly esteemed for its cleansing, nourishing, exfoliating and rejuvenating properties. When moistened with water the feel on the skin is smooth and almost lubricating whilst also exfoliating. It’s the perfect way to cleanse the face, body or even hair, without soap or chemical surfactants. Buy at www. naturesinspiration.co.uk.

Nail your Christmas look LETS face it, we’re all very busy and flat broke these days so manicures are not top of our ‘to do’ lists. imPRESS nails by Broadway offer an exciting range of press on nails that are easy to

apply, don’t damage the nail bed, are long lasting and come in a variety of colours and patterns. Whether you are heading straight from work, are in a taxi on the way to meet the girls or simply want to add some colour in minutes – they work! They cost €7.99 for block colours and €9.99 for patterns and French manicure and last up to a week. Available from Dunnes, Penneys and Sam McCauleys.

The perfect LBD IF you have been invited to a Christmas party it’s time to start planning what you are going to wear. With budgets tight this year it’s a good idea to buy something that will suit several occasions. Too many Christmas dresses get worn once then thrown into the back of the wardrobe. One thing’s for sure, you can’t go wrong with a LBD. Wallis have some very reasonably priced dresses including this spotty number. Capes are very much in style this year also so if you already have your dress and don’t want to ruin the look by wearing your usual quilted coat then you could consider this pretty beaded one.

32 | ARTS & ENTS FILM The Help Director Tate Taylor

I

f young girls are looking for strong role models who help defeat evil and promote love over it’s reverse they would better watching this than the soppy ‘Twilight’. It tells of Skeeter , a feisty Southern Belle in 60’s Mississippi who returns to her native Jackson wanting to be a writer. However the only work she can get is a domestic hygiene column in the local paper. She asks her friend’s black maid to help her and a veil is lifted for her to reveal all the bigotry and racism that lies beneath the surface of this manicured world. They decide to write a book about the abject slavery of the local maids which leads to disastrous consequences for all involved. This was adapted from a very popular book club novel. In fact it seems engineered by the author for promotion on the Opray Winfrey Show. All the elements that would appeal to this powerful advocate in modern literature sales are here. There are shades of ‘’Imitation of Life’, ‘The Color Purple’ and ‘Driving Miss Daisy’. It will

be similarly feted in Oscar nominations especially the black cast who are all superb. However it is aimed at teaching younger viewers about this forgotten time and most of the humor is grossout while much of it plays like a vintage version of ‘Mean Girls’. The movie is carried by Emma Stone who proves here as Skeeter that her stand-out turn in ‘Easy A’ was not a fluke. She captures the essence of the character and never delves into mawkishness or uses that teary eyed stare so many actresses employ to denote profundity. Instead she reels it in and delivers a really subtle performance that is both witty and fresh. Olivia Spenser and Viola Davis will no doubt collect many gongs for their work as the maids and they both deserve much praise. Jessica Chastain for me is the real pleasure of this movie- a white trash scatterbrain who emanates decency from every pore as she trips on her heels. So if vampires and their drippy beaus don’t excite you this is the antidote. To escape the faux goth posturing you will be relieved to see a movie which delivers real characters, a good history lesson and some very funny toilet gags. -DARRAGH BYRNE

Renault Ireland boss commits to Electric R

ENAULT IRELAND’S managing director, Eric Basset has set a challenge for his dealer network and team that will see 1,000 Renault electric vehicles sold by the manufacturer in Ireland next year. The Renault boss, who has overseen the marque’s market share double since his arrival in Ireland in 2009, is confident that one in 10Renault vehicles sold in 2012 will be electric. He has also stood by his commitment to make electric vehicles affordable to all and reminds those in any doubt that Ireland is leading the

way in Europe for infrastructure and availability of electric vehicles. Renault launched its electric vehicle offensive in 2008 with the announcement of its comprehensive, upcoming line-up of four electric models, the first of which just arrived on Irish roads. The Renault Kangoo ZE, the first electric vehicle offering from Renault, was launched is available to test drive at dealerships all over the country, priced at €16,400 ex VAT including the Government grant of €3,800.

The electric mini van has already seen a huge interest in France where 15,000 Kangoo ZE have already been ordered by some of France’s largest companies including La Poste, the French postal service. Renault is the only manufacturer to introduce a range of 100% electric vehicles, from the Kangoo ZE mini van to the Fluence ZE Saloon, to the Twizy urban quadricycle and the stylish compact hatch, the ZOE, all due to paper on Irish roads in 2012. The Kangoo ZE battery will cost €75 ex VAT per month to lease (based

on 48 months, 15,000 KM per year. Renault Kangoo ZE will be available in three sizes including the Kangoo Maxi Z.E. 2 seat and 5 seat models. Eric Basset, MD, Renault Ireland: “Renault’s Irish team is the best trained network in electric vehicles in all of Europe following extended training over the past year in technology, after sales and c ustomer care. “We have committed fully to the arrival of our range of ZE vehicles in Ireland, and recently employed eight Ambassadors who are each fully

dedicated experts in electric vehicles. “Our strategy from day one was to make electric vehicles affordable to all and we are standing by this by bringing in our range at prices that cannot be matched by our competitors. “Ireland is ready for electric. It’s not our future, it’s the present, and Renault Ireland is ready to sell affordable electric vehicles to suit all lifestyles.” Test drive the new Renault Kangoo ZE at your local Renault Dealer.
