Sweet news at last as Irish Sugar site to be cleared and made safe THE former Irish Sugar site LQ &DUORZ VHHPV VHW WR EH Âżnally cleared and made safe. Food manufacturer Greencore has set aside an additional â‚Ź5.1m to remediate its former site and hopes the work will be completed by the end of this year. The site originally extended over about 300 acres on the outskirts of Carlow town and parts of it are already back in use. Some of the rehabilitated land may now be used for housing. Greencore chief executive Patrick Coveney said he expected all the work will be completed by the end of the year - a decade after sugar production in Ireland ended. A total bill of â‚Ź32m also includes the clean-up at the former Mallow production site in Co Cork, and the cost involved in demolition as well as soil decontamination and other measures. Greencore is quoted on the London stock exchange and JLYHV LWV ÂżJXUHV LQ VWHUOLQJ It said it had made an extra

£4m provision in its accounts for the Carlow site, and that the rehabilitation process was taking much longer than anticipated because of strict requirements set down by the Environmental Protection Agency. Mr Coveney said that up to 80 years of sugar production on the site meant that parts of the land that would most likely be used for residential construction at some point in the future required intensive treatment. Greencore noted in its 2010 annual report that it expected substantially all the site remediation related to its exit from sugar production to be completed by the end of 2011. Rehabilitation of the Mallow site was substantially completed that year. Greencore shut its last remaining sugar production plant - in Mallow - in 2006, with the loss of 240 jobs, after the European Union restructured the industry. A later report from the EU’s Court of Auditors found that closure

may have been unnecessary because the EU had relied on out of date data. The Carlow site was closed in 2005 by Greencore, and its rehabilitation is regulated by the EPA. Mr Coveney was speaking as Greencore reported a strong set of interim results, as it continues to capitalise on the demand for ready-to-go convenience food in the UK. Its revenue in the six months to March 25 rose 7.5pc to ÂŁ691.6m (â‚Ź883.1m), ZKLOH RSHUDWLQJ SURÂżW MXPSHG 8.5pc to ÂŁ43.5m (â‚Ź55.5m). 7KH FRPSDQ\ VLJQLÂżFDQWO\ outperformed the market for its products, which are sold by major retailers such as Tesco, M&S, and Sainsbury’s. Mr Coveney said that the company also plans to reÂżQDQFH P RI SULYDWH placement notes that fall due in October. In 2003, GreenFRUH UDLVHG D WRWDO RI P in the US via private placements. “We’d expect to terminate that facility pretty quickly,â€? he said.

Carlow alive and well in dead rubber! Leinster Senior Hurling Championship Westmeath 0-22, Carlow 2-15 Tipping up to the County Grounds on Sunday we were fearful of what awaited us and those fears weren’t allayed when the news greeting us at the turnstile was that “Carlow only have 16!” Having arrived just as the minutes silence for Joe McDonagh was about to be observed we were further informed that the Carlow warm-up hadn’t exactly given the impression of men on a mission. This might have been to be expected given the ‘dead rubber’ nature of the fixture but a chastening defeat as we bid farewell to Liam MacCarthy status would further deepen the ever increasing belief that Carlow hurling is in a deep decline. Shorn of key men through injury and suspension, Pat English and his management team asked what was left of a decimated squad to hurl with pride, as he told RTE after, “we are back down in the Ring Cup and our preparations for getting back up start here, we asked the lads and they asked themselves to go out and hurl for their county”. And, fair play, those fifteen warriors answered that call, this was a spirited, fighting performance laced with plenty of skill, a performance which saw the red, yellow and green lead for

three quarters of the journey (1-9 to 0-10 up at half-time. the game in the 55th minute before Westmeath levelled) and even when the visitors hit the front, Carlow battled back to parity, refusing to go away while despite tiring limbs and losing a man to a second yellow card the home side pared back a four point deficit to one late in proceedings. Yes, cognisance must me made of the fact that Westmeath’s motivation was diluted given that the Lake County were already assured a quarter-final meeting with Galway and were also short key men - most notably Tommy Doyle and Eoin Price, the heroes of their big win over Offaly - but that said you could see in the maroons second half body language that they were determined to repeat their league final victory over Carlow, maintain their momentum. Defeat with honour then for Carlow but before a topsy-turvy 2016 season is consigned to the history books we bring you our last ‘How they Played’ of the inter-county year … DEAN GRENNAN: A baptism of fire that ends in a clean sheet is a good news story to start with as Dean, the third choice ‘keeper only added to the panel ahead of the championship, was

elevated by defection and suspension to No 1 and the Mount Leinster Ranger did well on his inter-county debut, advancing off his line to make one fine second half stop, made good use of his puck-outs. GER COADY: His entire campaign has involved Ger up against lively, tricky opponents but as against Kerry and Offaly the St Mullins defender stick to his task, got in a good few tackles, cleared his line on occasion too. RICHARD KELLY: Finished his first inter-county season as he started it with a solid display on the edge of the square, having featured to effect at half-back and mid-field during the course of a very productive 2016 for the Mount Leinster Ranger. ALAN CORCORAN: Ditto to Ger Coady, Alfie was continuously opposed by livewire raiders but ditto to GC too the Erin’s Own corner-back kept on keeping on, tackling, harrying, hassling, clearing. SEANIE WHELAN: Injury delayed his championship debut until last Sunday and having had worthwhile Walsh Cup and NHL campaigns as a forward it was as an abrasive wing back the Ballinkillen youth appeared here, not afraid to make or break the tackle. Definitely one for the future

RICHIE COADY: But for a harsh suspension Richie would have joined the Carlow ‘Century Club’ by now, as it is this was his 97th appearance with our flagship hurlers in all competitions and while it ended in a red card as a result of two yellows the Mount Leinster Ranger enjoyed a useful outing. MICHAEL RYAN: Wearing No 3 but sited at left half back, ‘Dewy’ revelled in being released from the tighter strictures of the edge of the square, the Ballinkillen man playing with a gusto and abandon that carried the fight to Westmeath. CONOR LAWLER: Confined to a late substitute role in the previous two championship outings the Carlow Town man not only started on this occasion he produced an fine midfield performance, a superb long range first half point and a brilliant individual goal when careering through the heart of the visitors defence before dispatching a low shot in the scoreboard end rigging real highlights. JAMES DOYLE: Since returning to the panel mid-way through the league off the back of a fine Fitzgibbon Cup campaign with IT Carlow the St Mullins man produced the goods, his ball winning ability, his industriousness and energy all vital to the cause as was his accurate striking, adding two points to his tally on Sunday. SEAN MURPHY: Choo-choo, from play, has been Carlow’s most prolific scoring forward over the last four years, the Ballinkillen raider racking up a healthy 6-64 in 37 competitive outings, just a single point of

that tally from a free, brought his championship tally to 3-21 as his 12th appearance yielded 0-3, one a trademark score after a scintillating second half run. JOHN MICHAEL NOLAN: Saved the best wine till last, this the Naomh Eoin clubman’s best performance of the season, a couple of terrific catches, a couple of superb over the shoulder points, his stock-in-trade, John Michael worked hard all though. KEVIN McDONALD: The talented Mount Leinster teenager showed some deft touches, kept plugging away, he will have gained much experience from his maiden voyage on intercounty senior seas and will be central to Carlow’s hurling future. DENIS MURPHY: Having battled back twice from the dreaded cruciate injury the Mount Leinster Rangers sharpshooter had his 2016 season curtailed by a different injury, missing the Kerry game, only coming on late v Offaly, looking sharp, he started here, shot a half-dozen points equally shared between play and placed balls. SEAMUS MURPHY: Set the tone for Carlow’s lively display on Sunday by racing through from the terrace wing to stick a low shot in the Deerpark end rigging, added a point and continued to work hard all through, the St Mullins man, joint captain, led by example all season. ROSS SMITHERS: He may not have scored but the Naomh Eoin No 15 was a busy playmaker, fashioning opening for others, winning a few frees and generally getting stuck-in, one if most industrious performances in the county jersey.

“Dead rubber is a term used in sporting parlance to describe a match in a series where the series result has already been decided by earlier matches.

The dead rubber match therefore has no effect on the winner and loser of the series, other than the number of matches won and lost”. Hence last Sunday’s Carlow v Westmeath Leinster SHC match in Netwatch Cullen Park was a dead rubber, Carlow already relegated to the Christy Ring Cup, Westmeath already guaranteed top spot and a quarterfinal meeting with Galway. And to those of you who are of the opinion you can find virtually anything on the world wide web, yes, there was an image of a dead rubber! However, while the same WWW traces the origin of the phrase ‘dead rubber’ back to the game of bridge it would appear the reason a rubber was called rubber, be it dead or alive, has been lost in the mists of time! Speaking of rubbers, the flagship hurlers of Carlow and Westmeath have crossed camáns on 17 championship occasions, Carlow leading the rubber 8-7 with two games drawn.

New Camogie Supporters Club to help Scenario Planning

Liam Griffin, the former Wexford hurling manager and successful entrepreneur, is a man who knows a thing or two about making progress, be it on the playing field or in the business world, a man who dovetailed charisma with pragmatism as a combination of passion and attention to detail brought projects from ground zero to glorious fruition.

So when Liam Griffin talks it well worth listening. In a recent interview spoke about scenario planning: “You’ve got to ask what you can do to readjust things. This is called scenario planning. Plot out the scenario. Sending money down to Wexford or Carlow, wherever, is not going to work. Sending money is not a strategy. Strategy and money together

will work. But money on its own won’t work. And strategy on its own probably won’t work. So you’ve got to tie the two together to make it work”. Carlow camogie has a strategy in place, a very good strategy that has already reaped rewards, players and officials are working hard at all levels and have lifted Carlow from ground zero but now these passionate people go in search of glorious fruition, the dream of Carlow lifting AllIreland silverware in Croke Park. The strategy is in place, the flesh is willing, very willing but to facilitate the attention to detail to get to the next level and the level after that the Carlow Camogie Board need money, as Liam Griffin says you’ve got to tie strategy and money together to make it work. Carlow camogie operates on a shoestring budget and that is why the Supporters Club is

being revived, we need cashflow, we need accessible funds to provide the flagship adult team and all our development squads with the best of everything, be in transport, food, facilities, gear, gym, video analysis, all the building blocks required as well as making sure the people involved are not out of pocket for contributing so handsomely to the game they love. Every cent raised will be poured back into the furtherance of Carlow camogie, every cent raised will assist us in out scenario planning, we have the strategy, we need the sponduliks! TO JOIN THE CARLOW CAMOGIE SUPPORTERS CLUB will cost you €20 and you will receive a membership card, Carlow Camogie car flag and key ring. For more information contact Liam 086-0848162 or email secretary.carlow@camogie.ie

Barrow Grand Prix asks stern questions of Carlow cyclists By John Walsh The Dunbrody Famine ship is secured to the pier in New Ross preparing for a new set of visitors. The visitors examine her upside down and inside out and ask questions about her. People love history, they like to delve into the past, to find out more, perhaps to find out more about themselves. The Carlow bike racers constantly ask questions of themselves, questions like am l fit enough? Have l trained enough? Have l had enough rest or enough sleep? Sometimes they just need some reassuring. l know having spent a lot of time with the lads over the years to say, that yes they are fit enough and strong enough to compete at any bike race in the country. The Barrow Grand Prix in Wexford on Sunday was another tough challenge for the Carlow boys. The racing got going at 11am sharp. 115kms was the distance for the top riders on the day (A1/ A2), six laps of a 19kms circuit. Seamus O’Neill, Paul Woods, Alan Galavan, John O’Shea and Shane Foley were Carlow’s representatives in the main event. The boys rode very well around a very challenging circuit. The inclines came fast and furious, the speed was up from the gun, the attacks came early and frequent something had to give. The gaps began to appear after 30kms of racing. Dylan Foley (Aquablue), the strongest man in the race left the front of the peloton and rode

with complete conviction, he was not going to be distracted from his task, he went to the race with one think in mind and that was to win. Fair play to him, I haven’t seen a rider with such determination in a while. Dylan took on the rest of the field and won, what a brilliant performance. While Dylan was riding the race of his life at the front the Carlow boys were working hard to keep in contact in the main field, and with one lap to go the writing was on the wall. The top ten riders had a couple of minutes to spare over what was left of the main field at the end. The Carlow lads were very glad to finish what turned out to be a very challenging day at the office. In the A4 race, Paddy Hutton and Andrew McCabe another two good Carlow riders put in two strong performances and finished comfortably in the main field. Another A4 Carlow rider who is putting in some strong performances lately is Peter Gersi. Peter finished in the top ten in last week’s Deanside Cup, a very impressive ride, well done Peter. Meanwhile the U12, U14 and U16 Carlow riders are competing very well at the moment and are rarely out of the first five finishers in any race. Well done lads!! Under age (16/14/12 year olds) training at 6pm each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Milford Weir car park (contact Gavin on 085 112 0238 for details).

OISIN WINS FEILE FOOTBALL SKILLS

Excellent branding (see classy logo) and a huge buy in from all the participants ensured that the new Celtic Challenge U-17 Hurling competition was on a sound footing to begin with but we suspect it has surpassed expectations and has already been doomed a huge success, the regular games and squad rotation working a treat as every single squad members enjoys game time every week. The Carlow squad, under the tutelage of Dessie Shaw, Brendan Hayden, Mick Kehoe, Ronan Dempsey and Declan Byrne, have played three games to date, hosting South Tipperary in Round 1 in Fenagh when goals gave the visitors a cushion, then travelling to Walsh Park, Waterford and only trailing Waterford City

0-11 to 0-8 before the home side eased clear. Last Wednesday evening it was back to the Training Centre in Fenagh where South Wexford were visitors, a late goal clinching a 3-14 to 1-14 victory at a time Carlow were pressing for the draw their ďŹ ne display would have deserved. Carlow squad: Kevin Curran, Tommy Dunne, Jack Ryan, Eanna Holland, Donal Jordan, Tony Lawler, Darragh O’Toole, David Nolan, Dan Sheehan, Barry Hickey, Mikey Bambrick, Jon Nolan, Mikey Kavanagh, Eoin Fenlon, Jamie Kavanagh, Billy Molloy, Michael Slattery, Ber Scully, Jim Nolan, Diarmuid Murphy, Ciaran Whelan, Cathal Murray, Darragh Murphy.
