DRY body brushing is often recommended as a way to help the immune system and stimulate the body in a gentle way in the morning. But really, it’s too cold in our Irish winter to be hanging around in the morning when you struggle out of bed‌in the darkness! But now summer’s here, it’s a chance to give this traditional Ayurvedic dry massage a chance. Also it’s 100% natural and free. The technique of dry body brushing refreshes and stimulates the skin and lymphatic system, enhancing blood circulation and the release of accumulated toxins. It helps to shed dead skin cells and encourages new cell renewal, which results in smoother and brighter skin. It can also help

Omega 3s deliver results for mums and babies THE health beneďŹ ts of omega3s are well known in relation to heart health, cholesterol lowering beneďŹ ts and reducing inammation e.g. rheumatoid arthritis. The speciďŹ c beneďŹ ts of healthy fats for pregnant women and their babies is relatively new. Key beneďŹ ts for babies include improved vision and cognitive development, better sleeping patterns and a healthier distribution of body fat. For mums, beneďŹ ts include a more healthy duration of pregnancy and a possible decrease in postnatal depression. Unfortunately many expectant women and ladies planning pregnancies are regularly consuming enough of the Omega 3 (EPA & DHA) fats in their usual diets. DHA is an abbreviation for Docosa – Hexanoic –Acid!

Immune Booster Dry body brushing is recommended as an immune booster because most of the lymph channels lie just under the skin, so a very light massage is all it takes to stimulate the ÀRZ RI O\PSK 7KH O\PSKDWLF system removes waste and toxins from the body and helps immunity against pathogens. BENEFITS FOR BABY A scientiďŹ c study published in the journal Lipids measured improved visual acuity in 4-month-old infants whose mothers received DHA- Omega 3 fats daily during pregnancy. Research published last year in Nutrients looked at cognitive development in infants born to mothers consuming seafood throughout pregnancy compared with non-seafood eaters. Important insights included signiďŹ cantly improved language and social activity scores at 15 -18 months of age. Researchers also observed a signiďŹ cant reduction in the number of children with suboptimal IQ and behaviour scores. Another beneďŹ t for baby is better sleep. In 2012, researchers measured improved sleep / wake states in infants of mothers who consumed 300 mg DHA daily during pregnancy compared with infants whose mothers received a placebo. It found more appropriate healthy patterns of fat deposition in babies born to mums consuming more omega-3 DHA through diet compared with mums who had lower intake during pregnancy. BENEFITS FOR MUM

In a recent study published in BioMed Research International, the gestation period lengthened by four days for mums who increased DHA intake by 300 mg per day through ďŹ sh and other dietary sources. A shorter gestation time is associated with greater risk of ADHD in school-age children. It is thought that oily ďŹ sh consumption more than once per week correlates with a decreased risk of hyperactivity compared with women who ate no ďŹ sh during pregnancy. Some studies indicate that 300mg DHA omega 3 fats during pregnancy reduced symptoms of post-natal depression, however further studies are needed to conďŹ rm this. DAILY REQUIREMENTS AND BEST SOURCES The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends that all pregnant women should consume an additional 7001400mg/week of DHA (EFSA, 2010). This is in addition to the requirement of 1750mg/week combined EPA and DHA. This increased intake can be achieved by consuming 1-2 portions of oil-rich ďŹ sh per week (FSAI, 2011). The best sources of DHA are trout, salmon, mackerel and sardines (FSAI, 2011). MERCURY Certain types of ďŹ sh can be a source of environmental contaminants such as methylmercury. High levels of methylmercury may be harmful to the foetus. Pregnant women should avoid the consumption of marlin, shark, ray and swordďŹ sh and limit consumption of tuna to one serving of fresh tuna (150g), or two 240g cans of tinned tuna per week.

Don’t let anger hold you back from experiencing joys of life Angela Morrissey OUR body and mind can inform us of the state of play of our emotional well being. Our entire body is a sensory instrument and every organ will tell a story to those who sensitively listen. We can use our mind to observe physical tensions and also to notice angry, bitter or defeatists thoughts. This requires us to be deeply honest with ourselves. Some of us have been brought up to believe that anger is not a good emotion

as it has connotations of unpleasantness and even violence. Consequently RQH KHDUV RI ÂżUPV DQG RUJDQLVDWLRQV VHQGLQJ VWDÉŁ that may be prone to anger on courses with titles like “Anger Managementâ€?. This is dealing with the obvious, the anger, but what is causing this anger? We in the Human Givens acknowledge that anger is an emotion; and just like any other emotion it has a place in our lives in order to protect us from attack. So anger is a positive thing when used appropriately. When

we express it inappropriately problems occur. There is always an underlying reason, rational or not, which causes us to be angry. It may be that anger was the method used when things did not run smoothly in our family of origin and we do not know how to deal with similar situations in any other way It also may mean that things are not going well in our lives and we are not having our emotional needs met in an appropriate manner. After all, if we feel “hard done by being angry about it is natural.

The idle bystander

Chic and cheerful THIS week I returned WR )UDQFH IRU P\ ÂżUVW visit in almost 20 years, and it didn’t take long before I fell in love with the country, and it’s chic, sassy style, all over again. THE Buddhists have a phrase – Don’t Just Sit There – Do Nothing. I think that’s what happens to me when I get to the point I can do no more. After the exams I sat last week, I move like a Chivers jelly, never from one spot and only if I someone pokes me. Sometimes you have to be an idle bystander in your own life. The monk Thich Nhat Hanh, a name I am glad I don’t have to say to you, but whose writing I love, advises mediation as a daily practice and, if you are too busy, to meditate even more. Now mindfulness has been appropriated from religious territory, the secular community, even its commercial sector, is seeing the best work is achieved by minds that aren’t over loaded. One thing at a time – pace yourself – you can only do what you can do – these are all clichĂŠs for a reason. A clichĂŠ has its roots in truth. And I am a two speed person – fast or motionless. I need to get stiller in the mad times and it’s coming WR PH WKDW LI LQ FKDRWLF WLPHV , LQFRUSRUDWH ÂżYH minutes of stillness, this is going to give me a longer life. I’m good at day dreaming. If there’s a way of doing QRWKLQJ , ZLOO ÂżQG LW , FDQ EH GRLQJ QRWKLQJ ZKLOH looking very busy. You just stare into space as if in deep thought but really you’re staring into space. I did a lot of that in the past week. Then I realised I was doing far from nothing, was back at the sub conscious coalface, deciding what kind of person I was and would continue to be. While I was there I remembered something really important. A couple of years ago a friend of mine, who was very motivated, very successful and very determined, died directly from overwork. She was younger than me, surer of herself and certainly believed in the invincible nature of her practice and her opinions. She made her living giving them and ran a successful business. Then she died, without warning, because she was too tired to think straight. Watching her husband and daughters bury her has to be one of the hardest things I ever witnessed, as it was all so avoidable. No one told her to slow down, do less, sit there. She had the approval of a society that applauds workaholics. Her husband looked crushed but he also works harder than he should. The years after WKH EHUHDYHPHQW KDYH EHHQ VR GLɤFXOW IRU KLP and the girls, who lost their role model as well as a parent, have struggled to know any kind of peace. They appear lost, when I meet them they rarely VPLOH 7KH PRVW VLJQLÂżFDQW SHUVRQ LQ WKHLU OLIH LV gone. Her presence was so large her absence has created a yawning gap in each one of them. They do their best to relate to each other. But she had the HOHFWULFDO FXUUHQW DQG WKH PDLQV VZLWFKHG RÉŁ ZKHQ she went. Sometimes I wish the world was not so cruel, or so busy. I catch myself in the daily crush, squeezing another thing in – the thing that killed her. This week I’ve caught myself berating myself for just sitting there, waiting for energy to come back to me. Twenty years ago I had a serious illness which was not life threatening, but life changing. Two decades since I was bedridden and I learned then not to burn myself out. I have to keep learning it. I am WLUHG IURP HÉŁRUW RI WKH ÂżUVW SDUW RI WKH \HDU %XW , am hopeful for the second part, as I work towards a lifestyle that allows me to live as well as work. This has been the priority I came up with in my latest idle bystanding. The words of my deceased friend, in the last conversation I ever had with her, come to me. “I make my best decisions when I’m rested.â€? She had decided to do more of that. But never got the chance. ,GOH E\VWDQGLQJ FDQ KDYH JUHDW VLJQLÂżFDQFH

Album of the week

A Headful of Dreams by Coldplay Coldplay’s seventh album features more guests than any previous Coldplay record, with BeyoncÊ, Noel Gallagher, Tove Lo and Merry Clayton among those appearing across its 11 tracks (12 if you count the buried treasure of the hidden track X Marks The Spot). A followup to 2014’s fragile and lovelorn Ghost Stories, Coldplay have made an album that’s bursting with energy and colour, such as the deliciously ebullient first single Adventure Of A Lifetime and the rocket-powered Hymn For The Weekend.

App of the week

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Battery Share

Now a major motion picture staring starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, Me Before You is an existential work that’s masquerading as a beach read, a novel with beautiful characters who have complicated, textured souls. After a motorcycle accident leaves Will Traynor paralyzed, he loses his desire to live. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou Clark is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.

Unfortunately, batteries have a knack for dying when we’re running late, and no doubt many of us have been on the receiving end of several missed calls and texts simply because our phone couldn’t turn on. Battery Share warns selected friends and loved ones when you have a low battery. It also notifies you when their phone is about to die. This gives you the opportunity to contact them before they become unavailable. Notifications are customizable, so you can select exactly who receives notifications.

Early Éire Óg blitz set the winning tone Carlow Senior Football League Division 1 final Éire Óg 4-15, Old Leighlin 0-9

Éire Óg line-up for National Anthem ahead of SF: 1 final

GOAL! Sean Gannon about to put perfect finish on a sweeping Éire Óg move

An early Éire Óg scoring blitz which yielded 1-4 inside the opening ten minutes, 1-3 from the boot of county star Sean Gannon, set a winning tone in Netwatch Cullen Park on Sunday evening as the town side romped to a very impressive final victory. Old Leighlin’s solitary reply to that early burst was a point from a free and indeed come halftime when Éire Óg led 1-7 to 0-4 all but one of the the eventual losers points had come from placed balls. Gannon was in fine fettle early on and put perfect finish to a great move when placing the ball beyond James Clarke and into the scoreboard end rigging. Clare was to be beaten thrice more in the second half, Chris Blake replicating Gannon’s feat when getting on the end of a flowing move and dispatching a fine shot to the net while Cormac Mullins, though wearing No 20, started cornerforward and procured two real corner-forward goals, ghosting

in to finish two crosses over the line, on a palm in of a high ball, the other a first time grounder on a low delivery. Éire Óg manager Joe Murphy, who coached Old Leighlin to championship success, looks in a good position to repeat that act with his own club and certainly had them moving well thoughout this league campaign, particularly in the town derby v high flying O’Hanrahan’s, the semifinal v Rathvilly and Sunday’s decider. Always renowned for their slick hand-passing and combination play the red shirted townies varied their game extremely well in this all-action final display and their intelligent use of the foot-pass fashioned many openings and gave provided the Éire Óg display with added swagger. Highest on the winners roll of honour on this occasion would be right half back Jordan Lowry who had a marvellous outing, full of running, played the ideal attacking wing back game. A

close second would be Sean Gannon whose followed up his aforementioned early scoring burst with the usual workmanlike performance. Old Leighlin, who saw off the Blues after extra-time in the previous weeks semi-final, never really recovered from their flat start, looked a little tired and while the indefatigable Hughie Gahan did all in his power the league holders were well beaten, a rare sight in modern Carlow football history. Referee John Hickey, fresh from sideline duty at the Dublin v Laois Leinster SFC match in Kilkenny on Saturday evening, carried out his duties in his usual common sense manner. Éire Óg: Robbie Moore; Cathal Kelly, Mark Fitzgerald, Kelvin Chatten; Jordan Lowry, Paul McElligott, Benny Kavanagh (Capt); Eoghan Ruth, Derek Hayden; Eoin Maddock, Daragh O’Brien, Sean Gannon; Cormac Mullins, Chris Blake. Subs: Reece Denieffe, Corey Harmon, Lee Moore

Beaten but the focus still on the bigger picture Leinster Intermediate Camogie final - Meath 2-11, Carlow 0-6 Beaten, yes, well beaten at that but, in truth, Sunday’s Intermediate final appearance in Aughrim was a bonus, albeit a wonderful bonus, and in the greater scheme of things has been a welcome addition to preparations for the All-Ireland Premier Junior Championship, a competition at the end of which Carlow hope to realise the dream of playing - and winning - a National final in Croke Park. This Provincial Intermediate Championship took on a life of its own when three amazing games in eight days saw Carlow oust highly rated Laois (after a replay) and Kilkenny to reach the final. Had Carlow lost to Laois the first day no one would have been surprised and hopes would still be high for September. As it was, though, those great

wins raised expectations and even though everyone knew Meath were very useful, the fact that the Royals only had two points to spare in the National League Division 2 semi-final meant Carlow journeyed to sunny Aughrim with genuine and realistic ambitions of lifting Intermediate silverware. Let Carlow Camogie Secretary Linda Kenny, a trojan worker for this team, explain the mood in the camp after a 2-11 to 0-6 defeat having trailed 2-6 to 0-3 at half-time. “Today was not our day but even the best have days like these. Let everyone remember we are just one season in Intermediate and we are climbing the ladder and to reach our first ever Leinster Intermediate Final in year one is an achieve-

ment in itself. “We just have to think back and remember all our outstanding performances in reaching the final. These girls still have the same spirit and will but today Meath were a superior outfit with many years of Intermediate experience behind them. “Lets all pull together, support the cause and this group of players and management will give us a lot to cheer about in the All Ireland series. I’m still very proud of the Carlow Camogie family as we call it and the memories girls you gave on the journey to Aughrim. So thanks for that. Thanks to all our supporters who travelled and especially the young stars

on the future the Under 10s from Ballinkillen, Myshall and Naomh Brid. And finally best wishes to our seven leaving certs for their commitment and every good luck on Wednesday”. Yes indeed, Linda and the

camogie family are already looking forward, Sunday’s setback was just another part of the learning process for a team emerging from the backwater of Junior B to sharing a pitch with a team who n e x t

year will be plying their trade in Division 1. Rest assured manager Mark Brennan is already plotting and planning the All-Ireland Junior campaign …

Peter the Great by John Walsh The bikes were glistening in the sun at Simonstown Rugby grounds on Sunday. The rugby club are always very supportive to Navan Road Cycling Club the promoters of Sunday’s Meath Grand Prix bike race. They allow the club to use their facilities at the drop of a hat. Immediately on arrival the bike racer’s back-up team get to work, the mechanics check to make sure the bikes are in order before the off. A lot of preparation takes place at every bike race, gear cables, gear blocks, sprocket sizes, chain ring sizes, brake cables, tyres and tyre pressure. Just like formula 1 cars, the bikes have to be in 100% working order. When the bikes past the test… the attention is directed towards the riders. It’s always good to have some support when competing in any sport, a path on the back or a few encouraging words don’t go astray. The rider’s pre-race preparation also starts as soon as the team car is parked up (ideally). Sing on for the race is the first step, no rider will be allowed to take part without a current UCI licence, food is the next on the agenda, Mamas home-made cooking comes in handy but only if you have sufficient time

to digest it. Most times rice and pasta are the preferred option. Riders have to be well nourished before they face, usually up to 140kms. On Sunday in Simonstown water was been taken on board big time, the weather was warm and sultry, dehydration had to be avoided at all cost. The racing got going at 1pm sharp, the A1 and A2 riders were the first to get going. Seamus O’Neill, Paul woods and Shane Foley put in good strong performances in the 105kms race. Seamus was unlucky to finish outside the prizes having won the bunch sprint to the line. John Causey and new kid on the block Peter Gersi represented Carlow in the A3 race, a 75kms challenge, this race turned out to be the story of the day for Carlow cycle racing when Slovakian born Peter took the honours in the A3 race when he outsprinted the rest of the breakaway group and was first man over the finish line. Peter, has been living in Grangecon near Baltinglass for the past 10 years and only recently joined the Carlow club and donned the Carlow jersey. I spoke with Peter after the race, and he said “I’ve worked really hard since last October and I have spent a lot of

A couple of months back Peter travelled back home to Slovakia and took part in one or two pro-am races, these races, he felt were very beneficial, and contributed to his success on Sunday. Peter said he is looking forward

to the challenges that lay ahead in the much tougher categories. I have to say the Carlow colours looked very well on the Slovakian strong man, well done Peter we wish every success for the future. Under age (16/14/12 year olds) training at 6pm each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Milford Weir car park (contact Gavin on 085 112 0238 for details).

Round-up May is winding to a close, summer finally seems to have arrived and the cricket season goes on apace. The weather accounted for two of Bagenalstown’s matches last weekend with the Firsts and Seconds games falling foul of the foul weather. The Thirds got their game in and it was another excellent result for Stephen Hadley and his men. The visitors, Civil Service CC, batted first and were restricted to 108. Credit must go to the wicket takers, Syed Baryalay who took 4 for 15, Anis Kahn who took 2 for 23 and Liam Foot who took 2 for 18. The fact that all these players are still Youth players (and younger) is both a credit to them and their efforts and offers great hopes for the clubs future. The wicket takers were well supported by the other bowlers who built the pressure on the batsmen without taking wickets. Diarmuid Power was exceptionally parsimonious with only 9 runs coming off his 8 overs. The ‘Town reply got off to an initially rocky start, being 3 for 26 at one stage. The elder statesmen, Power and Clive Foot steadied the ship with Clive particularly impressive, top scoring with 32. The young bloods then

came to the fore again with Syed (13) and Stevie Hadley building on that platform. The game went to the wire with Bagenalstown leaking wickets and Civil Service leaking runs. Going into the last over four runs were needed to win and Stevie, who excelled with 25 not out, displayed coolness beyond his years to guide the side home. They carried this great form into this weekend at home against Greystones. Not to be outdone by his young mates Robbie O Neill hit a sensational 62 to give the ‘Town a super start. Veteran Sean Farrell rolled back the years to stroke an unbeaten 52 in his own inimitable style. Life in the old dog yet! Captain Stephen Hadley chipped in with 23 and youth reared its head again as Syed hit a late 20 runs. A challenging 206 total proved beyond Greystones as the bowler did their job once again and the ‘Town cruised to a 50 run win. Hadley Snr led the way this time, breaking a dangerous partnership and then coming back on to mop up the tail. Wickets were shared between Robbie, Anis and Azaz Ahmed with Syed again bowling very tightly but without success.

Greystones were never allowed get any real momentum going with the Bagenalstown fielding being of a very high standard. Tony O Grady stood out in this regard, giving a master class in ground fielding. He has the relentless energy of youth and spends it wildly! The Seconds continue to go winless but performances are good and that elusive win is just around the corner. They went down to a strong Swords side by 30 runs in Dublin at the weekend. Waqar Khan was exceptional with the ball again proving virtually unplayable. The ‘Town bowled well and fielded aggressively to restrict Swords to 169. This was good effort on a big, fast outfield. Again though, the batting was rocky with too many wickets lost early. The middle order rallied with Sunny Charles and Ray Stapleton contributing 20 each before another clatter of wickets seemed to finish Town off. When Shozab Ali Taj struck 11 off one late over however it seemed like the fat might be pulled from the fire. An exceptional slip catch dismissed him and the ‘Town hopes went with him. Robbie O Neill deserves honourable mention for an unbeaten 16.

Naomh Brid U-10

Happy Naomh Bríd U-10 camogie contingent who played an exhibition game in sunny Aughrim on Sunday at half-time in the Carlow v Meath Leinster Intermediate final

I am pleased to report that the First team secured their first win of the season away to Pembroke. Few details are available at this stage other than Shane O Neill top scored with 70 for Bagenalstown as they posted 242. It proved enough for a 50 run victory and they are up and running now. More details to follow. In a busy weekend for Bagenalstown CC, the Fourth team played a friendly with Wexford which resulted in a narrow one wicket win for Wexford. I am obliged to mention that Colin O Neill finished with 10 not out for the ‘Town. The MLR flags were flying high this weekend! The underage teams also secured wins at U12 and U14 with wins over Waterford and Gorey. It was all in all an exceptional weekend for Bagenalstown with 6 teams taking the field for the first time across all ages and abilities. Despite the above, we would still welcome anyone with an interest in playing or simply involving themselves with the cricket club. There are many non-playing tasks to perform for anyone with the time and interest to put in such as scoring, coaching and just supporting.

inaugural Carlow Urban Schools event, topped the table with a brace of hard fought victories, inching out Askea 3-3 to 2-2 and Bishop Foley 3-3 to 1-5, the Graigue lads repeating the form which saw them reach the semi-final of their Division of the Laois Cumnan na mBunscol competition. Askea edged the town derby with Bishop Foley 3-2 to 2-2. Both Askea and Bishop Foley had Emerging Talent teams there as well as these warriors produced the game of the day, Bishop Foley rallying to win 4-2 to 3-0. All five teams also took part in a Crossbar Challenge - 4 boys advancing to the final, while a Jab lifting against the clock competition and a ball on the rope swing challenge ensured the boys a full afternoon’s hurling, the ‘idle’ team far from idle! Many thanks to all the teachers and Principals for their co-operation, particularly Mr Brennan (Graiguecullen),

“FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY STING LIKE A BEE!” “That’s the secret of Muhammad Ali!” Only this week I again used that mantra when coaching young children in school, emphasising the boxer stance, the warrior stance was the hurlers stance! Even changed it slightly, when in the girls schools, to “that’s the secret of our Katie!’ Ali was a hero of my childhood, why wouldn’t he be (bee!) when my father would get up at 4am in the morning to listen

to a Ali World title fight on the kitchen wireless! Ali was a hero to many, a man who lit up boxing, a real character, as sharp with his words as he was with his fists! Gone but never forgotten, Rest in Peace. Ali on his visit to Ireland in 1972 to fight Al Blue Lewis in Croke Park received coaching lessons from Kilkenny hurling legend Eddie Keher, and yes, you’ve guessed it, Ali claimed he could have been the greatest!

Miss Fitzpatrick and Mrs Kelly (Askea) and Mrs Molloy and Mr Crowe (Bishop Foley). Thanks too to Carlow Town Hurling Club and Pat O’Brien and Kieran Egan in particular for their facilities and helping hand. Thanks too to referee Enda Hulton who enjoyed a great rapport with the boys and we are glad to report didn’t have to test out the ‘sin bin’ rule which applies to this competition, a time out in the sin bin instead of a yellow card. And chief organiser Leo McGough of Setanta, whose brainchild this competition is, would like to thank Carlow Cumnan na mBunscol for giving their full support to the Urban Hurling concept. Next up Gaelscol, Bennekerry and guests Tullow in stage 2 of the hurling while the Gaelscoil, Bennekerry/Tinryland and a combined Scoil Mhuire/Askea Girls will open camogie proceedings this week as well.

TIMES PAST: THE EARLY YEARS OF CARLOW ROWING CLUB This week we focus on one of the oldest, if not the oldest sporting clubs in the county, an appropriate time to do so as Carlow Rowing Club staged yet another successful Regatta last Whit weekend Indeed ’twas a rite of passage for virtually every Carlow child to be brought down the the Barrow each Whitsun (and Mon!) to watch the oarsmen and women race, a icecream from ‘Chilly’ Holland’s a treat en route! In the beginning … The first attempt to document the history of Carlow Rowing Club was made in 1955 when the committee of that year decided to mark the Blue Riband victory year with a souvenir booklet. The resultant article so successfully captured the progress of the club, through this often unstable, but always colourful, era that it is used here as the basis from which the club’s first “Hundred Years A-Rowing” is told. The history of the Club, however, must be penned somewhat unevenly. The sources of information are correspondence, minute books and heresay. The earliest record dates from 1860, and refers to a Carlow regatta in 1859. The details of this regatta, and the type of racing at it and the actual beginnings of our club must remain as speculation. Even before the formation of the Club the River Barrow was dotted with private boathouses. Many a pleasant afternoon were spent “messing about on the river” as the song goes. Indeed the first minute refers with a meeting in the Corn Exchange (now the Deighton Hall) on May 8th, 1860 and is described as a meeting of the subscribers to the 1859 Carlow Regatta fund. Although the early regattas were not national events, the prize money was

Dolphin R.C., brought down two ladies crews to compete at the regatta. Chivalrously the Club sought no entry fee from them; it was felt that they would be an irresistible attraction and that this would prove a more than adequate compensation. In the following year Carlow had a senior crew on the water, and the Club was represented at Trinity, Waterford and Ross. This was an unlikely alliance as only the stroke, J. J. Oliver’, was a senior oarsman. Behind him at 3 he had a junior in the person of W L. Duggan, while two maidens - Liam Bergin and Bill Fenlon — sat at 2 and bow. Waterford Regatta was their day of triumph but it was also the last trophy won by the club for more than twenty years. By 1933 the Clubs finances had dwindled and no regatta was held. Nor could a crew be sent elsewhere. The history, in the following years makes sad reading. The Club, pressed by its creditors, had to economise and in time even to cease its affiliation to the I.A.R.U. and sell its fine and clinker four (though for reasons of sentiment, even when in direst distress, it always refused to sell its trophies). Unhappily, some members were quick to desert the sinking ship; but there was a strong core who would not admit defeat.

RIGHT: The old club house on Skinners Lane in 1921 with the crew (L to R) E. Fenlon, R. Shackleton, C. Slocock, D. Fenlon, R. Ticker and S. Alcock carrying the boat. In 1869, ten years after its foundation, Carlow Rowing Club established a boat house in a shed on Skinners Lane, which is on the southern side of Graiguecullen bridge and beside the ruins of Carlow Castle, the ruins of which is used on the Club’s logo. The Club remained here until 1962 when it moved a few hundred yards north of the Bridge to occupy the building formerly owned by the Grand Canal Company, which had ceased operations in 1960

among the best on offer in the country, amounting to £34 l0s 0d in 1861. In March 1869, it was unanimously decided to organise the Club properly. Meetings were held, rules were drawn up and the subscription was fixed at a sovereign with an additional entrance fee of the same amount. This fee was not changed until 1948, when raised to £1 l0s 0d. Blue with white diagonal stripes were chosen for the Club’s colours. There is no available information how or when these colours were subsequently changed. It was not later than 1902, however, for the rules of that year prescribed dark green. For their Club premises the committee negotiated with Mr. Haughton and leased from him the shed near Skinners Lane for an annuity of £10. Mr. F. Barnes was the first captain of the club in April, 1869, and in June the first boat-keeper, Mick Hayden, was appointed. Mick had a cork leg, believed to be on account of an unfortunate accident on the water. It was

customary to assist landing boats by pushing out an oar to the occupant. Miss Byrne mistook the boatman’s wooden leg for the customary oar and the unhappy man ended up in the water. In 1878 the crew of William P. Hade, Edward Rodgers, Harold Richardson, Joseph Hare and Cox Richard Wilson had the distinction of winning Slaney amateur and Islandbridge Regattas the first victories for a Carlow crew. The first minutes The minutes end in 1897 and are not recorded again until 1916, a great pity as the years 1900 - 03 must rank amongst the best in the Club’s history. The names of the famous crew which rowed together for those four years — Bell, Boake, Duggan and Orr — are now household words.

They, regularly, competed at Waterford, Wexford, New Ross and Chapelizod, the latter in 1903, their most famous victory. At this time one of Carlow’s strongest supporters was Lord Rathdonnell, a fine oarsman himself, who had rowed with his brother for Oxford. He took a keen interest in the Club, attending the regattas with his wife, who presented the prizes. In 1902 he donated the silver cup which bears his name, now competed for by senior fours. 1902 also saw the rules updated and these continued as the constitution of the club until last year’s annual general meeting. The years prior to World War One must have been years of steady development, for, when the Club records resume in 1916 we find a committee obviously content

with the clubs financial situation and strength of membership. tle encouragement The affluence of the club however was not of great benefit to the rowing section. The policy of the committee after the War, and through the ‘twenties, was aimed primarily at financial well-being. There was little encouragement to the crews to train for competitive racing. Any advances made were increasing the fleet of pleasure boats, which stood at more than thirty in 1929. This was to prove important in the subsequent history of the Club, for in’the”30s and ‘40s when racing ceased, it was these boats which stood between the Club and extinction, as they provided the sole justification for its continuance. In the meantime history was made in 1931 when

Refused to bow Led by W. L. Duggan, Bill Fenlon and Jim Oliver, the Club refused to bow before what seemed the inevitable. They refused to surrender the Club’s long tradition of triumphing against odds. Rather, it was decided, to start anew and re-build the Club completely. As a beginning, it was to be refurnished with entirely new equipment. The struggle was difficult, but by 1952 a foundation had been laid and the revival of racing was ‘on’. Indeed, ‘52 was to prove the dawn of a new and glorious era. After two decades silence Carlow was to speak to Irish Rowing again. A clinker four was fitted and rigged by the D.U.B.C. boat-keeper, C. Byrne. The Club revived the regatta and had three cups for competition. In the circumstances, this season was highly successful, but the results were little indication of the amazing success to come in the space of two seasons.
