Carlow takes lead in sports injuries study A LECTURER at IT Carlow is leading a study aimed at reducing the risk of injury to young athletes, particularly footballers and hurlers. Dr Clare Lodge, chartered physiotherapist and lecturer, will lead the injury prevention research programme. She said training errors, growth spurts, later maturation, and poor techniques contributed to GAA players being particularly vulnerable to injury. “This new research programme will set out to study this vulnerable cohort, surveyLQJ WKH PRGLÂżDEOH ULVN IDFWRUV as well as assessing the effecWLYHQHVV RI VSHFLÂżF VWUDWHJLHV DW potentially decreasing the incidence of injuries within this sporting group,â€? she said. The new national programme is designed to tackle the growing epidemic of sports injuries among adolescents. Up to 800 hurlers and 800 footballers aged 13-18 will WDNH SDUW LQ WKH ÂżUVW 1DWLRQDO Adolescent Injury Prevention Programme, which will moniWRU SOD\HUV RYHU ÂżYH \HDUV SLQpointing when and why lower extremity injuries occur with a view to identifying how to mitigate risk. A study published in last month’s Australian Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, entitled ‘Epidemiology of injury in male adolescent Gaelic games’, found that a third of all adolescent players developed an injury in one year, and more than a quarter of injured participants sustained a subsequent injury throughout the year.
The study, led by Dr Siobhån O’Connor, athletic rehabilitation therapist at Athlone IT, found match injuries were more frequent than training injuries in Gaelic footballers and hurlers. More than a quarter of injuries were overuse in nature; recurrent injuries were frequent, particularly in footballers (47.3%); and lower limb injuries predominated, particularly in the knee and ankle. Minor injuries were common in hurling (61.7%), with moderate (20.8%) and severe (37.5%) injuries predominant in Gaelic football. A number of schools have already signed up to take part and two sports scientists will carry out the monitoring. Participating schools will take part in structured warm-ups and will also self-monitor and selfreport injury incidence via a special app. Coaches and trainers involved with secondary schools in Leinster and Munster, traditionally participating in the senior schools tournaments, will be included in the study. They will be educated and mentored throughout the season. The programme, a collaboration between the GAA and Institute of Technology Carlow, will ultimately have a strong bearing on informing and guiding optimal GAA practice guidelines when evaluating and implementing injury prevention strategies among young GAA teams, according to Pat Daly, GAA head of games development and research.

A place of beauty: Picturesque Graignamanagh
IT WAS a fantastic festival weekend in the picturesque town of Graignamanagh. The 14th annual Town of Books was a bumper success and this year there were the added attractions of a busking competition and a very popular Antique Road Show, sponsored by Sheppard's Auctioneers of Durrow. The weather was kind except for a showery Saturday morning and the result was a buzzing Saturday in Graig and a superb Sunday afternoon as crowds poured in. The antique show was packed from early on as people brought items to be valued by Sheppard's professionals. It was a case of basking in busking as an entire town be-
came a stage for the busking competition which brought entries from a radius of 20 miles, including top class musicians and singers from Kilkenny City and Bagenalstown. The competition stretched from The Quay as far as Main Street and locals and visitors delighted in the open air entertainment where the standard was so high that the event will GHÂżQLWHO\ EH LQFOXGHG DJDLQ for the 15th festival. Credit went to the local festival organising committee which did a brilliant job and to the local community who continued their excellent support for a festival which is the pride and joy of those who love to call Graignamanagh Caption
We could soon be on top of Europe’s league for overweight people - and a fat lot of good that will do us IRELAND could be on track to become the fattest country in Europe by 2030 if urgent action isn’t taken. The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) has issued this warning as part of its pre-budget submission. It is calling for a 20% tax on sugar-sweetened drinks, more resources for research and more action to be taken to tackle childhood obesity. 7KH REHVLW\ ÂżJXUHV FLWHG by the RCPI come from the World Health Organisation. The RCPI has said that it is aware that one in four chilGUHQ LQ ,UHODQG LV FODVVLÂżHG as overweight or obese. Speaking about the proposal, the RCPI’s chair of its policy group on obesity, Prof Donal O’Shea, said: “The
Government, like the food and drinks industry, is happy to talk about personal responsibility and choice. “This is no longer good enough when we know that the environment is responsible for a major part of the problem.â€? In its submission the body has called on the government to place tougher controls on obesity, tobacco and alcohol. Speaking about this, Prof Frank Murray, president of the RCPI, said that legislative action taken by the govHUQPHQW VSHFLÂżFDOO\ LQ WKH area of alcohol abuse, had the potential to save lives. “Targeted evidence-based measures introduced by Government initiatives have been successfully shown to
save lives and reduce harm,â€? he said. “Hospitals are overcrowded, a problem exacerbated by the fact that at least 1,500 hospital beds are taken up every night as a result of alcohol.â€? The group encouraged all politicians to support the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill to allow it to become legislation during the lifetime of the current DĂĄil. One of the key measures included in the bill is setting a minimum pricing for alcohol units, which it is hoped would combat alcohol abuse. The group is also calling for further increases to excise duty on cigarettes and VAT to be removed or reduced on nicotine replacement patches.

Lose 5lbs in 5 Days the easy way with Ireland’s original and best-selling Teatox AND it’s 100% Safe with the contraceptive pill
S
o what is Miss Fit Skinny Tea and why are 1000’s of Irish women just like you using it to get in shape, beat the bloat and get more energy?
Miss Fit Skinny Tea is the laxative-free natural herbal teatox that has taken Ireland by storm. Industry experts have labelled it a marvel and celebrities such as Vogue Williams cannot get through a day without it. If you are anything like most women you have the following challenges on a week to week if not a day to day basis:
You suffer from bloating You lack the energy and motivation to go to the gym or workout You find it difficult to stay on track You crave carbs and sugary foods as they improve your mood You just feel off You find it impossible to lose weight and keep it off, especially around the waist and tummy
YOU ARE NORMAL! That’s right, you may feel like you are only one who feels like this but in fact if you ask any of your friends, they will suffer from one or more of the above problems just like you.
JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE NORMAL, DOESN’T MEAN IT’S NORMAL TO FEEL LIKE THAT There are many reasons you feel the way you do. You may have stress in your life, you may be making the wrong lifestyle choices or you could just feel like you need to give your body some type of a break. Our bodies are supposed to be the engine that drives us each and every day, sometimes, like the engine in your car, it needs a service. With a detox from Miss Fit Skinny Tea you are giving your body a full service which makes you feel great on the inside and look even greater on the outside.
The Teatox that everyone is talking about!

Fasten your financial seat-belt: you could be in for a bumpy ride. It’s all linked to the lunar eclipse on 28th in your sign. Months with eclipses tend to bring high level activity on the financial front. With September also containing the opposition of Jupiter to Neptune just as Mercury retrogrades (17th) AND Saturn’s move into Sagittarius, many people could feel they’re on a slide with unstoppable momentum. Two eclipses this month (solar on 13th and lunar on 28th), together with Jupiter and Neptune reaching their opposition - just as Mercury retrogrades and Saturn changes signs - point to a month of significant activity that will surely affect global finances. Serious losses are likely with levels of panic a distinct possibility. In as much as you can, it would be wise to put safety nets in place before Venus turns direct on 7th. This is likely to be a challenging month for all signs - but perhaps especially so for those born under a Mutable sign (you included). This is in part due to an opposition of Jupiter and Neptune that coincides with Mercury turning retrograde and Saturn moving into your opposite sign. You could view this as a balloon’s deflation. This is likely to be a financial challenging month for many signs. You too could be affected - especially from 17th when Mercury stations as Saturn changes signs. Then there’s the lunar eclipse on 28th in another of the Cardinal signs. One strong possibility is that income levels will be reduced. Though quite capable of operating a thrift scheme, it may be that matters quite out of your control lead to increased expenditure September could bring a bumpy financial ride: not solely linked to the Blood Moon eclipse on Monday 28th. There may be signs of trouble. Many will experience loss as Jupiter and Neptune come to their opposition just as Mercury retrogrades and Saturn changes signs. You may be aware of the threat of what lies ahead as early as the first day of the month you could come unstuck through a partner’s behaviour The solar eclipse on September 13th is in your sign: a signal for a fresh start. In this instance, with a series of‘difficult’planetary patterns occurring over 17th-18th, it may be that this need is thrust upon you. There is the possibility of loss at worst or financial confusion at best.

Your financial affairs could take a decided lurch this September. Notwithstanding the lure of an apparent deal forged before 10th, you could experience a financial downpour mid-month when Mercury stations in your sign just as Jupiter and Neptune reach their opposition. It may be that insufficient attention to the fine print of a contract causes you difficulty. Two eclipses this month, together with Saturn changing signs, Mercury turning retrograde and Jupiter and Neptune arriving at this opposition, combine to suggest a month of global financial turbulence. The lunar eclipse (28th) is also a Blood Moon and may well signal financial and physical storms. Many people could experience significant losses - especially in the investment arena. Two eclipses: the first, a solar, at the apex of your solar chart (13th) followed by a lunar eclipse on 28th signal a change of financial pace across the world. Between the two eclipses, Saturn moves into your sign: and just as Mercury turns direct and Jupiter (your ruling planet) opposes Neptune. You could be sucked into a financial whirlpool. Not only are there two eclipses this month (solar on 13th and lunar on 28th) but Mercury retrogrades at the top of your solar chart just as your ruling planet, Saturn, changes signs - and as Jupiter and Neptune reach their opposition. The alignments this month signal profound change for all signs. You could be caught in the eye of this cosmic storm. September is likely to prove challenging financially for all signs. The planetary picture does not look good for global financial markets - especially mid-month and again around the lunar eclipse (also a Blood Moon) on Monday 28th. Maintaining control might not be at all easy. The platform on which you are most likely to experience this concerns both credit and foreign exchange A solar eclipse in your opposite sign (13th) followed by a lunar eclipse (28th) accenting a key financial area of your solar chart suggests a change of financial direction. That though is not all: on 17th, Mercury stations as Jupiter and Neptune (your two ruling planets) arrive at their opposition - and within hours of Saturn arriving at the apex of this chart.

Beware of geeks bearing gifts: Forget the maths JIMMY RHATIGAN
W
OULDN’T it be fantastic if we could have a General Election every year. Okay, we can already hear the loud moans and groans of our people and to be brutally honest we can’t blame anyone for being cynical or simply fed up. But in saying that we would welcome a trip to the ballot box every 12 months, we can assure that there is method in our madness. We know that for thousands having to trek to a polling station every year would be a pain in the part of their anatomies that are normally used for sitting on. But there could be advantages too for our people. And let’s be honest, what might be termed political advantages don’t always boost the lives and times of Joe and Josephine Soap. Many people, perhaps a majority

We accept that people get piddled off with false promises, knocks on doors at all times of the day and night as new found friends, old buddies SHUKDSV FDOO WR SUHVV WKH ÀHVK DVVXUH that they will solve every problem that our people can throw at them and that they will be part of the best government since Brian Boru and the lads rattled a few cages in Clontarf. We can certainly take all of the latter with a good pinch of salt. But, and this is where any possible positives enter the equation. People will surely have noticed that in recent weeks, months even, the generous machine, well stoked up by Fine Gael and Labour, has been working overtime. Money is being thrown here, there and everywhere, promises are as plentiful as politicians at local funerals and there is no shortage of funds to build, knock or reconstruct.
In recent years it was almost impossible to get a medical card for a dying man, a rehab class for a child with a disability, a special needs teacher for a classroom or a bed in a hospital to ensure a proper place to convalesce or perhaps to die with dignity. But, suddenly, with an election looming, there is no hold on the purse strings, money is available for almost anything, the splash of the cash is back with a vengeance. Finance is as plentiful as confetti at a wedding. But, dear innocent readers, as we all well know, if a lift goes to the top ÀRRU RI D EXLOGLQJ LW ZLOO LQHYLWDEO\ UHWXUQ WR WKH JURXQG ÀRRU DW VRPH stage. In other words geeks bearing gifts, ignoring the mathematics of balancing books, may dish out the sweeteners but will know deep down in their hearts and souls that after the storm of generosity will come the calm of what can be a brutal reality. be claw-backs when the boys and girls are back in town, in Kildare Street, a place where they seem to grow horns and become devils again, forgetting handshakes and kissing babies for DQRWKHU ¿YH \HDUV We have perhaps driven through two many alleys, boreens and side streets in our attempts to come to the point where we explain the supposed logic of holding a yearly election. Firstly, the boys and girls elected would have to be on their toes at all times, minding their ps and qs as they tend to do in the run up to an election. Secondly, they would have to be very careful about any promises made. They would have to be sure of delivery and could not give with one hand and take back with the other as they would again be meeting their maker, as it were, in a matter of months. Okay, so a yearly election would cost more money but one wonders if the swings and roundabouts of politics would eventually end up balancing the books as the more frequent polling could be a type of straitjacket-like politics where stupidity, rhetoric and any muttering or mumbling would lead to the scrapheap.
It would take a bit of time to get on to what we might call the highway of common sense and decency but any early contrariness might be worth putting up with in the long term as the political power that should always have been with our people would now well and truly rest with the electorate. The suggestion could be a crackpot one and will certainly not get thumbs up from those we sometimes cynically call the political classes. However, for the rest of us it may represent a trap door of security as those who fail to keep promises will automatically fall through, or perhaps be pushed. Could any plan be any more crazy than the present system where politicians get their backsides onto FRPIRUWDEOH VHDWV IRU ÂżYH \HDUV EDWWHU us for four plus years and then cajole and mollycoddle us when it suits them? It is one thing cuddling babies in a bid to impress doting parents but changing nappies is another matter. Politicians tend to have no problem with the easy bits in many walks of life but they tend to keep their heads well below the parapets when the manure hits the fan.

Boho Chic is a style that is inspired by Bohemianism and the fashions of the hippie movement. It has a late ‘60s and early ‘70s flavour that is predominantly casual, although dressy versions of the style do exist too. While “It girls” Kate Moss and Sienna Miller were among the first to revive the hippie look, with their boho-chic outfits 10 years ago, it was still going strong at the recent music festival Coachella in California, where the stylish sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, were photographed in delicate headbands and floaty, patterned shifts. GET THE LOOK Channel ‘70s-chic with this season’s essential boho blouse. This hero piece may borrow from the past, but pretty embroidery and catwalk-inspired details are so now! Blue and white’s a tried-and-tested combination that makes a boho top so easy to wear. Throw on with denim shorts and sandals if the weather forecast is bright, or switch for jeans on greyer days. For a warm-weather look that’s fresh and feminine, a loose-fitting, blush top is a winner. Cropped trousers keep the look light for balmy evenings abroad, simply add metallic accessories to pay tribute to the allinspiring disco era. Throwback to the decade everyone’s talking about with an unbeatable combo of platform heels and flared jeans. An off-the-shoulder ruffle top with a vintage print is the perfect partner. Frances Theloke
carlowcourier.ie
Oh baby, you are blooming beautiful ARE YOU allowed talk about your new grandchild in a gardening column? Maybe if I come from the angle of a new EXG RU D ÀRZHU\ QDPH" O my Luve is like a red, red rose/That’s newly sprung in June ...Well, we were presented with our second grandchild last week, a beautiful girl, and she is just adorable. Well I would say that, wouldn’t I. Still nameless, mind you, I mean choosing a name is a tricky thing, what with the competition of the Kardashians, Honey Boo Boo, Modern Family, well. where do you go from here? I mean it’s not every name that can go with Theloke, now can it? So enough you cry. Well I’ll just attach one teeny, weeny, tincy little picture for you to fawn over. Now, back to the business in hand...I just discovered an amazing app for your smartphone, which helps to identify the name of plants you do not know. It’s called, Like Your Garden, download it free from your playstore. So you are
wandering through Wisley or Sissinghurst (both on my bucket list) and you see a plant you just have to have in your garden but you have no idea of the name of it? Hey presto Just take a picture of it, and click search...hey presto, the name of your plant or potentials will appear on screen. And yes, I have tried it myself. To the ladies from the Kilkenny Horticultural Society, who were out to visit our
garden recently. The plant we were all wondering what it’s name was is a Goose-necked yellow Loosestrife (lysimachia clethroides). Pictured. So now, I don’t need to do a GDK answer anymore (Granny Doesn’t Know). I just need to produce my trusty smartphone and Bob’s your uncle. The Gooseneck Loosestrife is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers
moist, rich, humusy locations in full sun, but spreads by rhizomes and can be very aggressive in these ideal growing conditions. Tends to be somewhat less aggressive if grown in drier soils with light shade. So now, you learn something new every day. Dahlias and Gladioli are great tubers/bulbs for late Autumn colour in the garden. 'DKOLDV DUH WKH QDWLRQDO ÀRZer of Mexico, so hence why the tubers have a tendency not to be frost hardy unless lifted and cocooned in your shed over Winter. But the Dahlia is the highlight of any late summer garGHQ .HHS SLFNLQJ WKH ÀRZHUV and it will reward you by producing hundreds more in its place. I must admit, I never lift my Dahlias, I just mulch them every Winter and take my chances after that. Planning your garden Dahlias can be used many ways in your garden. Individual plants or small clusters within existing landscaping provide summer-long colour and highlight. Long straight rows look impressive and are easily managed and accessed for cutting blooms. Large dahlias can be situated as to provide background colour for other landscape plants. Small dahlias can be intermixed with other plants or used as borders. If you want to cut lots of blooms you should plan for easy access to all sides of the plants.
Selecting your site Dahlias will grow in nearly any soil as long as you have 12”-14” of tillable depth. If your soil is shallow or rocky, build raised beds to increase the rooting depth. Poor drainage will encourage rotting that can affect overwintering and quality of tubers that are produced. If your soil shows signs of standing water or is constantly wet consider modifying the drainage or build raised beds. Sunlight is important to 'DKOLD JURZWK DQG ÀRZHU production. Your dahlias should receive a minimum of 8-10 hours of direct or slightO\ ¿OWHUHG OLJKW 3ODQW WKHP in a bright spot. Deep shade promotes lanky growth and few blooms. If you are in an area where daytime temperatures consistently exceed 90 degrees providing shade during the hottest part of the afternoon will improve bloom quality and reduce fading. If you are in an area that does not have consistent summer rainfall, be sure your Dahlias are planted where
you can provide regular irrigation. In containers Dahlias do very well when grown in large pots or garden boxes. This is a good strategy if you have limited space, want to use Dahlias as patio decorations. They do best in containers that hold at least 12”-14” of potting medium. Smaller containers will require more frequent watering. If your container Dahlias are regularly wilting even when watered regularly, move them to a location with less afternoon sun to keep them from overheating. As a PS, I had a call from a lady recently, subsequent to my article on Giant Hogweed. Her son has had the recurring dreaded rash for seven years now and cannot eradicate it. Once he ventures out into the sun at all, the rash erupts again. If anyone has had any experience on how to get rid of the Hogweed Burn please contact me. Mazda6 2.0I 145PS -TAKE TWO
The third generation Mazda6 is a huge improvement over its predecessor and represents an under-rated choice in the Mondeo-sized medium range segment with its sector-leading SKYACTIV technology driving down running costs. Most UK sales will be of the 2.2 diesel models, but could the frugal 2.0-litre petrol versions actually be a better bet for lower mileage buyers? Andy Enright checks out the improved version and decides. TEN SECOND REVIEW The Mazda6 had long felt like a car with elements of greatness that just lacked the polish to beat the best. This improved third generation car edges the Japanese company closer to class leadership with sharper styling, better attention to quality and some very economical engines, especially the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre petrol units on test here. Factor in a lot of kit and accessible pricing and we’d understand you choosing it. Is it better than a Ford Mondeo, a Vauxhall Passat, or a Hyundai i40? It’s so close it’ll come down to personal preference. It’s your call. BACKGROUND Developing a class-leading medium-range family saloon has to be the toughest task available to car manufacturers these days. Not only are you competing with rivals in your class, but you’ve also got to convince buyers their money is better spent here than on a smaller car with a weightier badge on it
bonnet. Mazda has spent over a GHFDGH WU\LQJ WR SHUVXDGH D ¿FNOH FOLHQWHOH RI WKH EHQH¿WV RI LWV 6. We’ve got an improved MK3 Mazda6 to look at now, and RQ ¿UVW DFTXDLQWDQFH LW ORRNV D strong contender. The styling remains striking and the driving dynamics have been acclaimed as class-leading. This improved model now gets a smarter cabin too. So is WKLV ¿QDOO\ WKH PHGLXP UDQJH FDU WKDW FDQ ¿QDOO\ IDFH GRZQ the Mondeo as well as the likes of BMW and Audi? I thought ,œG WU\ DQG ¿QG RXW E\ WU\LQJ the minority UK buyers’ choice, the 2.0-litre petrol option. SKYACTIV technology has meant that this now returns pretW\ PXFK WKH UXQQLQJ FRVW ¿JXUHV of some equivalent diesels. And for some lower mileage customers, that could make it a very interesting choice indeed. DRIVING EXPERIENCE It really can’t be emphasised enough how much the SKYACTIV programme of reducing the weight of this 0D]GD KDV EHQH¿WWHG WKLV model in terms of the way it drives. It’ll accelerate quicker, stop more sharply, corner more keenly, the suspension will be able to its job more effectively and you won’t be exacting such a huge demand on brakes, transmission and tyres. It’s a real virtuous circle but Mazda has to balance that against the usual demands of making the car more spacious, better equipped, safer as well as making it feel betterbuilt. That is a really tough assignment, more of which later.
The petrol engines we’re focusing on here haven’t really changed very much with the latest revisions, though 0D]GD KDV LPSURYHG UH¿QHment. Otherwise, it’s as before, which means that petrol buyers choose between 145 and 165PS versions of the 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder direct injection unit. Both are reasonably rapid, with even the lower powered variant making 100km/h from rest in 9.5s on the way to 207km/h. The 165PS version improves those ¿JXUHV WR V DQG NP K In both cases, drive goes to the front wheels via a slick sixspeed manual gearbox, unless you want to pay a bit more and go for a six-speed auto. Unless you’re going to be nudging DORQJ LQ WUDI¿F LW VHHPV D VKDPH to miss out on the manual. It’s real fun to use, the pedal spacing is about perfect and there’s DQ HI¿FLHQF\ EHQH¿W WR VKLIWLQJ yourself in this car too. Still, the gap has closed compared to what it used to be. DESIGN AND BUILD *HW WKH VSHFL¿FDWLRQ MXVW ULJKW and the Mazda6 has to be one of the most striking cars in its class. It’s a mean and muscular looking thing; all pent-up curves and bulges, with beady eyes and D VZRRSLQJ FRXSH OLNH URRÀLQH In other words not a lot really needed doing to the styling. The range-topping Sport Nav models get a revised grille and signature wing design - incorporating powerful LED headlamps including LED daytime running
lights, LED fog lamps, and LED tail lamps. Bulbs are so 2014. It also gets big 19-inch alloys. The Mazda6 interior, on the other hand, could always have used some help. It felt as if the styling budget had been blown on the exterior and the cabin was cobbled together on a budget. This time round, there’s a cleaner instrument panel and centre console design which gives the cabin a more cohesive, less cluttered look. If you need more space, try the estate, which features a boot capacity of 522-litres with the seats up and 1,664-litres with them folded. MARKET AND MODEL Going for a 2.0-litre petrolpowered Mazda6 rather than the 2.2-litre diesel will save you around ₏2,900. Essentially, you’ll be looking at paying somewhere in the ₏27,000 to ₏34,000 bracket, depending on your choice of trim level, your decision between manual and auto transmission and your selection between saloon and the kind of Tourer estate bodystyle that requires a premium of around ₏1200 over the equivalent four-door. All the main items of executive kit are included, whichever variant you choose. The mainstream SE and SE-L grades now include an electronic parking brake, a coming/leaving home headlamp function and the Multimedia Commander with separate volume dial. There’s manual driver and front passenger seat height adjustment and a 7-inch, full-colour touch-
screen which incorporates DAB radio and the MZD Connect infotainment system some may already have seen on the smaller Mazda3. This pairs with a smartphone to bring internet connectivity into the car with onboard access to social networking. That deserves a like. Aside from the exterior jewHOOHU\ WKH ÀDJVKLS 6SRUW 1DY models get a six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, vinyl leather knee pads, a headup display and an Integrated Navigation system. Sport Nav buyers can also option the car with stone leather upholstery (in lieu of black) and a Safety Pack incorporating features such as Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Smart City Brake Support which works better than it sounds, applying the brakes if it thinks you’re about to reverse into bollards, children or similar. COST OF OWNERSHIP If you always wondered when a petrol engine would come along that offered the frugal running costs of a diesel, then wonder no more. This petrolpowered Mazda6 2.0-litre, in 145PS form, offers mpg and &2 ¿JXUHV WKDW DUH SUHWW\ close to what an equivalent diesel model managed only a few years back. For the saloon, that means 51.4mpg on the combined cycle and 130g/km. The 165PS variant manages 47.9mpg and 137g/km. It’s all helped by the SKYACTIV technology that has brought about light weight, good aerodynamics and clever
HI¿FLHQF\ PHDVXUHV 7KHVH LQclude the rather horribly-titled i-ELOOP, which is basically a capacitor-based brake energy regeneration system that boosts economy by up to 10 percent when combined with the stanGDUG ¿W L VWRS LGOH VWRS V\VWHP Unlike most such systems, this one uses a lightweight electric double-layer capacitor instead of drawing on battery power. This capacitor effectively captures energy when the car decelerates and can run all of the car’s systems for a minute even when the idle stop system has shut down the engine. A pity then, that you don’t get it on the entry-level petrol variant. SUMMARY It’s relatively rare these days WR ¿QG D SHWURO SRZHUHG PHGLum range model from a volume maker - yet this one may make all kinds of sense for lowermileage business and family buyers. It’s probably the best car in its class to drive and can return over 50mpg in regular use. Plus it’s spacious, safe and good looking. Equipment levels have improved with this revised version and the pricing is about where you’d expect it to be, although your Mazda dealer might well be open to a spot of discussion on that particular score. Previously with this car, we complained a little about the rather low rent interior, but Mazda has moved swiftly to correct that issue with this improved model. Which leaves very little to fault.
