d o o F o r e H MADE from the milk and cream produced by their own dairy herd on the family farm just outside Kilkenny city - with a dairying tradition going back to 1860 - the secret of Nigel and Carol Harper’s Cramers Grove Ice Cream success is that traditional methods and ingredients are used in small batches, and no shortcuts are taken. Both the dairy ice creams and the other products they make sorbets and frozen yogurts - are all true ‘free from’ foods, with no artificial flavourings, colourings, preservatives or other additives.

Cramers Grove Ice Cream With the emphasis on fresh natural ingredients, including both exotic and seasonal fruits, the flavours are memorable. They make about 40 flavours (although not at the same time) and some of the most irresistible are classic Vanilla (Madagascar), Pistachio and Baileys Brown Bread; the sorbets include refreshing champagne and luscious mango, and there are several flavours of frozen yoghurt including blackberry and strawberry - and also a diabetic range. Cramers Grove have a retail outlet

Treats by Cramers Grove at The Goods Shed Market, MacDonagh Junction in Kilkenny city, where the complete range is available as well as a full cafĂŠ menu - with ice cream desserts, of course, like knickerbocker glory and icecream sundaes. You can also buy tubs of Cramers Grove products at selected stores including Blackberry CafĂŠ, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny; and Knockdrinna Farm Shop, Stoneyford, Co Kilkenny. Visit: cramersgrove.com

White: Barton and Gustier (B&G) Reserve 2013, Pay d’oc France 13% abv Chardonnay grapes can grow in many of the wine areas of the world, but individuality comes from the wine maker - how long in oak, maybe blending with another grape, even how well the grapes are picked. This is a good Llanguedoc example. Round and creamy, it has peach and crisp apple aroma with a hint of vanilla (from short oak aging). Match it with white meats or seafood, or simply enjoy On its own! Price: 9.99

Red: Barton and Gustier (B&G) reserve, 2013 Pay d’oc France 13% abv This Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Llanguedoc region of southern France. The sunny climate of 2013 gives this red a rich and fruity taste. It is full bodied with intense blackcurrant aromas and a soft oak finish. Ideal with red meats, casseroles. Even pasta and cheese! Price: 9.99

Back to School

I

t feels like the Summer has just started but as we all know the “Back to School” season is terribly expensive. So why not get an early start and make it as inexpensive an stress free as possible.

³

GET AN EARLY START AND MAKE IT AS INEXPENSIVE AND STRESS FREE AS POSSIBLE

Here are some tips to help parents: Check if you qualify for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. The scheme helps towards the cost of uniforms and footwear for school children, and operates from 1 June to 30 September each year. It is run by the local office of the Health Service Executive as part of the Supplementary Welfare Allowance Scheme. Your local office of the Health Service Executive will decide if you qualify for this payment.

Back to School

O

KAY, so you've got their uniforms, stocked up on stationery and treated the kids to a new school bag. You're feeling pretty chuffed with yourself for being so organised this year, except you've missed one crucial step - labeling all their stuff so nothing goes astray. Fret not, nowadays there are loads of quick and easy ways to label their stuff - here are a few ideas to get you started.

Name it or lose it

1. Iron-on labels Iron-on labels are perfect for mums who don't have the time (or the inclination) to stitch labels onto uniforms by hand. Your labels come ready printed, and they simply glue to clothes when heat is applied. But be warned - iron-on labels will speed up the labeling process but may lose their VWLFN\ HI多 FLHQF\ DIWHU VHYHUDO washes, so you may need to reapply. Be sure to check how the labels are holding up after several washes. 2. Permanent laundry marker pens Here's hoping you have tidy handwriting if you go the permanent marker route. Write your child's name on the inside collar in case that garment is found, then 'borrowed' by another child. Or, use a coloured marker, and instead of writing their full name, draw a shape or circle that your child can easily recognise as their own. Use a permanent marker

to label their lunchbox and water bottle too. 3. Sew-in labels Sew-in labeling is probably the most durable technique and it gives their uniforms a nice handmade touch, but it can also be time consuming. If you're going to spend the extra time stitching, here is an additional tip: sew a name tag hook into their clothes so that they can easily identify their own stuff in amongst a pile. 4. And the shoes? For the shoes, use permanent markers to label their names, or go for personalised stickon labels on the inside. If your kid's shoes will become handme-downs to your younger children later on, use a dark marker and write their names on brown masking tape before sticking the tape on the inside of their shoe. When the shoes take on new ownership, they can easily be replaced with freshly taped name tags later on. 5. Don't forget the bag and coat It would be hard for DQ\RQH WR 多 QG WKHLU RZQ school bag amongst a sea of black rucksacks. Prevent the unnecessary checking of every bag in the classroom by adding a tag or trinket to the outside of their school bag so it can be easily recognised. Same with their coat - add a small, easyto-spot tag to the outside zipper so it can be seen from afar.

Why we’re not watching UTV Ireland MICHAEL WOLSEY How I see it WHAT IS the point of UTV Ireland? What, apart from another channel, has it added to the scope or scale of Irish television? 7KH ¿ UVW TXHVWLRQ LV D PDWWHU IRU GHEDWH 7KH answer to the second is that, like its Ulster Television parent, it has contributed little or nothing of substance. I was a child in Belfast when Ulster Television was launched in 1959. The highlight of its homeproduced content was a programme called Tea Time With Tommy in which a man called Tommy James played requests on the piano. Sometimes the viewers got to appear on the show and do a bit of performing on their own account but the main attraction was in having your name broadcast on television. It would have been cheaper if Tommy had read out the telephone directory. And just as entertaining. Those were simpler times, of course. But not so simple that playing requests on a piano would ever have been regarded as cutting-edge television. Ulster Television was part of the Britain’s independent television network, a confederation of stations for the regions of the United Kingdom. They have now mostly been subsumed into a company called ITV plc. But originally, and for many years, they were separate entities with such

names as Granada, which served the north west of England, Tyne Tees Television (for the north east) Anglia (for the east) and Associated-Rediffusion which served London. They each supplied some local content - news, current affairs, a bit of light entertainment - and competed at providing programmes that would be broadcast across the entire network. And excellent programmes some of them were. Granada is probably best known as the home of Coronation Street but the station has also give us VXFK ¿ QH GUDPDV DV %ULGHVKHDG 5HYLVLWHG 7KH Jewel in the Crown and Cold Feet and some of the YHU\ EHVW 79 FULPH ¿ FWLRQ LQFOXGLQJ 3ULPH 6XVSHFW and Cracker. Yorkshire Television gave us A Touch of Frost. Associated had a huge hit with The Avengers. Thames gave us The Bill, repeats of which are still running on a number of channels. ATV produced The Muppets, a series that crossed the boundary between adult and children’s’s broadcasting more

successfully than any before or since. The company names have mostly gone - Ulster is one of the few survivors - but the tradition of regional programme-making lives on. Check out any successful ITV programme and you will LQYDULDEO\ Âż QG WKDW LI LW KDVQÂśW EHHQ ERXJKW LQ IURP America, it has been made by one of the network companies or its successor. <RX ZRQÂśW Âż QG PXFK PHQWLRQ RI 8OVWHU 7HOHYLVLRQ on that list. While other companies were making the likes of Queer as Folk and Dr Zhivago for the network, UTV was delighting us with a man playing requests on the piano and a number of programmes of the Down Your Way type where a a TV crew would patronise the residents of some small town or village. the programmes it aired, which somebody else had made. If you wanted to watch ITV, Ulster Television was the only way to go. When the company’s signal became accessible south of the border, the same rule applied. If you wanted to watch ITV then, by and large, Ulster Television was the route you had to take. When the company launched UTV Ireland, I assumed it would be providing something different - a stand-alone television station which would at least attempt to rival RTE and TV3. Instead it has stuck with the Ulster formula of British network programmes interspersed with some local news and current affairs. The schedules of UTV and UTV Ireland hardly differ and the few variations seem to have been chosen randomly, not selected for an Irish audience. For instance, on Tuesday July 28, when UTV was showing a travel programme called A Great Welsh Adventure, UTV Ireland was showing a travel programme called Britain’s Best Canal Journeys. Later that night when UTV was showing a repeat of Murder She Wrote, UTV Ireland was showing a repeat of the Jeremy Kyle Show USA.. Since it started in January, forecast losses at UTV Ireland for 2015 have almost quadrupled to more than â‚Ź16m and audience growth has stalled. Viewers who like the UTV offering are continuing to watch it direct from Belfast, as they always did. In a recent interview UTV Television’s managing director Michael Wilson mused on its problem.“I think the audience has been confused,â€? he told the Journal.ie. “We said we were going to offer a new station and I think some of the audience feel that they haven’t got a new station, they have got something that has been rehashed.â€? At least he sees the problem. Will he now provide a solution?

Ta-ra then, Chuck: my ďŹ rst brush with Cilla PAUL HOPKINS “You’re my world, You’re every breath I take, You’re my world, You’re every move I make...â€? THE Liverpool air hung heavy with the nauseous, acrid smell from the nearby gas works, as I trundled along Stanley Road holding my aunt’s hand, my younger brother tagging behind hanging close to my Uncle Willie Booth. The crankety, old, red double-decker Ribble buses Ă€ HZ E\ ZKLOH PHQ LQ ZRUNLQJ FORWKHV DQG ZRPHQ their heads of hair tightly bound up in coloured scarves – a remnant from the ammunition works of the war years – came out of factory gates heading for lunch on a nearby wall or a quick pint of bitter as we walked the two miles from my aunt’s house in Bootle. To see where Cilla Black was born. In a two-by-two over a hairdresser’s on Stanley Road. Even by then, 1963, Priscilla White that-had-been was becoming a phenomenon. And I, a mere lad, witness to it all. The young girls in mini-skirts that left little to the imagination, their hair-dos coiffed up like bee-hives, eye-lashes black with paint while boys in drain-pipe trousers and bum-freeze jackets and skinny ties, hair slicked back with Brylcream, eyed them up and down. The Sixties was happening and Cilla and the Beatles and Gerry and his Pacemakers and Billy J Cramer and the Dakotas and a host of other young

Scouse rebels were changing the music world beyond recognition with their Merseybeat sound. When The Beatles hit big, plenty of acts from their hometown took a shot at fame. Most of them had a hit or two, but few found the long-lasting success that Cilla Black achieved. This pop vocalist became an international star in the mid-1960s with a string of impeccable pop songs and ballads that were mostly produced by George Martin, the producer for The Beatles. The success of these songs made ‘England’s answer to Dionne Warwick’ into a British national treasure and an institution in the world of pop music. Priscilla White was a full-time typist when she began singing at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club in her spare time. The name change was an accident, brought about when a reporter for the local paper Mersey Beat remembered the wrong colour as her surname. The erstwhile White became friends with

the pre-fame Beatles and also came to the attention of their eventual manager, Brian Epstein, who helped her land a record contract. In 1963, she released her ¿ UVW VLQJOH D /HQQRQ 0F&DUWQH\ RULJLQDO FDOOHG Love Of The Loved. However, it was her next single that put Cilla Black on the fast track to stardom when she covered the Dionne Warwick hit Anyone Who Had A Heart, landing a No.1 slot in the UK. Ultimately, it would become the most successful single by a female singer in the history of British pop music. The song also sold more than a million copies internationally. Black followed this success with You’re My World, a sweeping ballad that was an English translation of an ,WDOLDQ VRQJ DQG WKH YHU\ ¿ UVW VLQJOH LQ P\ FROOHFWLRQ given to me by the same aunt with whom I had spent summer holidays and who I had accompanied that morning up Scotland Road. It became another international hit and would eventually become Cilla’s

In 1968, she began hosting her own variety series for BBC Television. The show’s theme song, a /HQQRQ 0F&DUWQH\ WXQH FDOOHG 6WHS ,QVLGH /RYH became a Top 10 hit in the UK. In the 1970s and 80s, Cilla Black made the transition from pop star to family entertainer. She continued to score hits throughout Europe with songs like I Don’t Know How To Love Him (from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar) and toured to appreciative audiences around the world. She also hosted the successful English TV shows Blind Date (“not a lorra lorra, luck, eh chuck?â€?) and Surprise Surprise. Both pioneering for a time, long before the advent of ‘reality TV’ and which allowed ordinary folk their 15 minutes of fame and notoriety I can still see my three children, after their Saturday baths, glued to Blind Date on a Saturday night, leaving their mother and I to have our dinner in peace. An insitution, almost. Cilla Black’s success came full circle in 1997 when she was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth for her many distinguished achievements as an entertainer. She did not have the greatest voice in the world, by any means – it was all a bit ‘gobbie’, like herself – but its distinctiveness will no doubt continue to be a staple for listeners who remember those halcyon days of the Sixties. That two-mile walk up Stanley Road that day in 1963 to Scotland Road to see where ‘Our Cilla’ had grown up is still etched in my mind, the acrid smell from Liverpool’s gasworks still lingers in my nostrils. And although I did not know it then, aged just 10, I was a witness to or something told me that something was going to happen alright‌ Ta-ra then Chuck‌

Dacia Logan MCV

S

OMETIMES simple is best. Granted, there are times when we want a bit of excess and over-engineering in our lives but when it comes to family transport, it’s easy to really blow the budget on something you don’t really need. It’s what manufacturers of premium-badged cars have counted on for years. At the other end of the spectrum is Dacia. It takes tried and tested Renault engineering and recycles it into new cars hailing from Romania. This means very little research and development outlay, modest labour costs and minimal tooling costs. The result is inexpensive but rugged cars that work very well for cashstrapped family buyers. The Duster budget 4x4 and Sandero supermini have established a beach head for the brand in this country and the Logan MCV estate looks set to build on that. MCV? Dacia claim it means Max Capacity Vehicle but it’s an estate to you and me and a handily-sized one at that. Driving Experience The Logan is the car that might well have first introduced British buyers to the Dacia

brand, especially if they’ve travelled to France where the first generation Logan was a big hit. We never got that car in the UK and the second generation Logan took a different tack to the original, making the Sandero in effect the hatch version. That’s why the Logan MCV gets much the same engine selection as the Sandero. That means a neat 900cc three-cylinder TCe 90 petrol engine as the main attraction. This is an engine that’s great in a Clio and powers the smaller Sandero adequately, with great fuel economy and a decent turn of speed. It’s an engine that needs to be worked as it makes peak power at 5,250rpm, although there’s 135Nm of torque from just 1,650rpm. For those on tighter budgets there’s a 75PS 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine that’s not quite as peppy and there’s also a 1.5-litre 90PS diesel. The Logan MCV rides on a version of the Nissan B0 platform that underpins the Note and the LEAF and is built tough to appeal to world markets. Electronic stability control (ESC) is fitted as standard, compliant with European regulations. It

ensures vehicle stability under difficult conditions such as obstacle avoidance, loss of grip when cornering, and slippery road surfaces. ABS (anti-lock brake system) is enhanced by Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), which adjusts the hydraulic system automatically to apply maximum brake pressure from the onset of braking through to the trigger point at which ABS switches in. Design and Build The Logan MCV is a fairly handsome thing that doesn’t instantly look bargain basement and also has one of the best carrying capacities in its class. Take something like a Skoda Fabia estate as a competitor. That fronts up with 480-litres of boot space with the rear seats in place and 1,485-litres of total capacity when they’re folded. The Logan MCV is notably bigger, with 573-litres in the luggage bay and up to 1,518-total capacity. Look at those figures and you might assume that with these broadly similarly sized cars, the Skoda maybe compensates by offering more rear seat space than the Dacia. But get into the back of the Logan MCV and it feels anything but pinched. The driving position is

comfortable, with a fully adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel (on some versions). And the layout obeys sound ergonomic principles, with all controls readily accessible on the steering wheel or in the immediate vicinity. The interior arrangement is clever, offering no less than 16-litres of handy, accessible stowage features, such as front and rear door bins, cubbies and a storage tray on top of the dashboard. The luggage compartment cover (available on some versions) has a rigid upper section with additional interior stowage capability. The easy-touse 2/3-1/3 split/folding rear bench, standard on all variants, makes for maximum versatility. Market and Model As usual with Dacia products, the Logan MCV has been priced to offer outstanding value for money. That said, the UK importers seem to have decided upon a trim structure across many of their models which means that if you want something like air conditioning, which many buyers see as a necessity rather than a luxury, you’ll often need to shell out for the very top model in the range, which buys you a bunch of other stuff you may not need. Some of the more interesting features available on the Logan MCV include ‘Media Nav’. Available on upper spec versions, this is a fullyintegrated multimedia system with a large 7” touchscreen running a highly intuitive

homepage menu for troublefree navigation across the system’s many useful functions, which include Bluetooth technology and satnav with 2D and 3D (Birdview) display. Personal devices can be easily connected to a dashboard USB or jack connector. Another clever touch on plusher models is ‘DaciaPlug&Radio’, also a straightforward and highly efficient multimedia solution, with a dashboard-mounted screen showing three lines of information. This comprises radio, MP3-compatible CD player, Bluetooth technology and dashboard-mounted USB and jack connectors. Then there’s cruise control with speed limiter on some versions, with steering-wheel control for both functions, and speed setting. Rear parking sensors are also offered with sensors in the rear bumper to warn the driver when nearing an obstacle. Power steering is standard on all versions. Cost of Ownership Dacia is a brand on the up and as more and more new buyers sign up, it’s tempting to assume that there will be a big queue of used buyers also looking for a piece of the action, but there’s a subtly different reason for choosing a used marque and I don’t think the Logan MCV will be quite as depreciation-resistant as some new owners hope. Still, the low asking prices mean that the edge is taken off the overall cost of ownership and it’s hard

to argue with some of the other running costs. The TCe 90 900cc petrol engine is respectably quick but it’ll still return reasonable fuel economy. Dacia quotes a figure of 56.5mpg and emissions of 116g/km. Go diesel and you’re looking at 74.3mpg and 99g/ km. All new Logans come with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty (whichever is reached sooner). Rather than forcing buyers to pay a premium for a longer warranty they might not want, there’s the option to extend their warranty should they wish. That’s something that could well help shore up used values. Summary The Dacia Logan MCV might well be one of the least glamorous cars it’s possible to buy but sometimes you just need a car as a tool and in that instance, the Logan makes a strong case for itself. It’s well screwed together, comes with great after sales service, is cheap to both buy and run and doesn’t look as if it’s a refugee from the 1990s. The 0.9-litre TCe 90 petrol engine is undoubtedly the most interesting powerplant, although if you’re going to be lugging a bunch of gear with you, it may well pay dividends to plump for the additional torque of the diesel engine. This is a car, like many others in the Dacia range, that is going to shake up the established order and make many buyers question whether they really need to spend any more on a utility vehicle.

Unfortunately, as we don’t have enough coaches to help out for the amount of teams we are more than likely going to have to drop some teams, so please let us know if you are willing to get involved with the club as we don’t want to be disappointing any kids this year.

Gig Guide

Film review Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

Rated: 12 A

Rogue Nation is a ride. It accepts the gauntlet thrown down by Brad Bird’s Ghost Protocol, staging hugely impressive set pieces while furthering a stronger story that makes better use of Ethan Hunt’s entire MIF team (meaning Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames and Pegg aren’t sidelines there). It introduces stunning new characters in the mysterious Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson, essentially the female Hunt) and the sinister Solomon Lane (Sean Harris). And it’s incredibly fun. It annoys me that I have to phrase it this way, but the fact that the Mission sequels continue to improve film after film – from M:I 3 to Ghost Protocol to this – is impossible. And yet, it’s happening, so why not enjoy the experience?

Fantastic Four

David Kitt

Rated:12 A Fantastic Four, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. Reed Richards becomes able to stretch his limbs huge distances; Johnny Storm can set himself on fire; his sister Susan can turn invisible and project forcefields; and their friend Ben Grimm’s flesh is transformed into rock. Directed by Josh Trank (‘Chronicle’) and starring Miles Teller (‘Whiplash’) and Kate Mara (‘House Of Cards’), ‘Fantastic Four’ is a radical reimagining of Marvel’s longest-running superheroes.

DUBLIN'S David Kitt opens his 9-date tour this Thursday (06 August) at the Red Door Theatre in Thomatown. Kitt’s music career spans well over a decade with six highly acclaimed studio albums to date: Small Moments, The Big Romance, Square 1, The Black and Red Notebook, Not Fade Away and The Nightsaver. Tickets priced at €10. Doors open 8.30pm. No support.

Billy Byrnes, John Street, Kilkenny

Major Thomas Egan (Hawke) is a US Air Force fighter pilot who has started to question the ethics behind his role in piloting drones in the Middle East. At work, Egan sits in front of a screen and kills terrorists without ever putting himself in danger while missing more and more the adrenalin rush that flying brings. App of the week

Tosh by Tosh Lavery

Tuber (Android)

During thirty years in the Garda Sub-Aqua Unit Tosh Lavery worked on many murders and most of Ireland’s missing persons cases, as well as high profile investigations such as the Whiddy Island disaster and the Mountbatten assassination. The unit was a perfect fit for a maverick like Tosh. He became obsessed with a job that demanded utter dedication and total fearlessness. But along the way, he battled alcoholism and his marriage ended. Tosh’s story is an uncompromising and revealing look at the macho world of the guards and what it’s really like on the inside.

YouTube isn’t exactly the most intuitive app to browse all the channels you follow, and that’s why Tuber exists. It puts your subscriptions front and centre so you can be sure to never miss a new video from the YouTube persons you love the most. The app only supports 720p resolution at the moment, so if you happen to watch a video that takes advantage of YouTube’s higher res offerings, you can easily switch to the proper YouTube app in Tuber. Board Game of the week

Southpaw

Zombies

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Billy Hope, a boxing champion whose ‘Southpaw’ style is fuelled by his feelings of inadequacy and frustration. The more he gets hit, the harder he fights. After a tragic accident which leads to the death of his wife, Billy’s daughter is taken away by Child Services until he can prove himself a responsible parent. Looking to clean up his act both in and out of the ring, he ends up working with a washed-up former boxer in the hope of redeeming himself. ‘Southpaw’ also stars Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker.

Players take on the role of a survivor amid city streets sprawling with Zombies. Movement is determined by dice roll as is combat when the player’s piece is in the same square as a Zombie. Players must conserve bullets and protect their life counters. At the end of the turn a dice roll directs the player to move a number of Zombies one square. First player to reach the center of the Helipad tile and kill the Zombie there, or kill a total of 25 Zombies wins.

City Breaks: Salzburg SALZBURG may be famed for its fairy tale ambience, as the birthplace of Mozart and the splendid setting of The Sound of Music. But once discovered, the lesser-known treasures will not disappoint. Boasting a mountainous backdrop, a cliff top fortress and enchanting baroque architecture, the city could have been pulled straight from the pages of a storybook. You can’t deny that Salzburg boasts a unique charm and appeal – not surprising that it is a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. Embrace the atmosphere of centuries past as you explore the old city. See the narrow streets and wrought iron signs of Getreidegasse, look for antiques around Goldgasse and enjoy the festive sparkle of Judengasse at Christmas time. Then get away from the city’s somewhat clichéd attributes. Explore the Museum der Modern, that embraces modern art, inside and art. Experience the trendy bar scene of the right bank and the isolation of Kapuzinerberg.

Shoulder pain when turning arm outwards – Infraspinatus Tendon Strain %\ 7RPiV 5\DQ 5HJLVWHUHG 7KHUDSLVW An achy and sometimes sore pain into the tip of the shoulder and the outer area of the shoulder blade may be caused by a strain of the infraspinatus tendon. The Infraspinatus tendon is one of 4 rotator cuff tendons that help stabilize the shoulder joint. It is also responsible for turning the shoulder outwards (external rotation), moving your arm behind the head and finally helps when extending the arm backwards. It attached from the shoulder blade to the outside tip of the head of the shoulder (humerus head). Mechanism of Injury The infraspinatus is injured when the muscle contracts or tightens while it is a lengthening position. An example of this is clipping a hedge or any overhead work for a prolonged period of time. When the arms are held in an elevated position, the infraspinatus tendon is thus held in a stretched position. Then an action of moving the arms outwards and inwards occurs (externally rotation the shoulder

joint – the role of infraspinatus) causes the tendon to contract (tighten) while it is in a stretched position. When done repetitively a strain or tear of the tendon can occur. Shoulder Pain Signs and Symptoms • Pain located at the outside tip of the shoulder can refer downwards to the outside area of shoulder blade. • Patient experiences a sharp jab of shoulder pain when reaching the arm in a forward plane to answer the phone or when reaching their arm outwards to carry a tea-pot. • Soreness or an Ach when driving the car with hands resting on the top of the steering wheel or when changing gears. • Difficulty and weakness lifting the arm upwards and downwards from an elevated position. An ach can be present when attempting to sleep on that shoulder at night. Treatment and Management Improving the position of the shoulder blade from forward tilting is important in order to

reduce the abnormal stretch of the Infraspinatus tendon. I find manual Graded Frictioning of the deposits of scar tissue formation at the site of the tendon attachment to humeral head very beneficial. In addition, Postural exercises are very important to help reduce shoulder slouching. Finally, isometric early stage strengthening on infraspinatus tendon with arm

in neutral which further progresses to higher grades of strengthening once an improvement is achieved. TomĂĄs Ryan is a Registered Physical Therapist with The Irish Association of Physical Therapy (MIAPT) and is based in Clonmel & Thurles. Contact Number: 0504 26672

Kilkenny Golf Club RESULTS & FIXTURES August 4th KILKENNY BOYS WIN FRED DALY LEINSTER FINAL The Fred Daly boys team took on Carton House in the Leinster final last Friday in Athy Golf Club and emerged victorious by 4 ½ to 2 ½. The team had to field in handicap order with the lowest handicap player out first and all matches played off scratch. It was felt that Carton House might have been a little stronger in the front order but Kilkenny had strength in depth and so it transpired. Mark Power was out first against Carton Houses lowest handicap player. Both players played great golf on the front nine and Mark Boucher from Carton House eventually emerged victorious on the 16th, in match two Luke Donnelly was 2 up with two to play but his opponent won the 17th with a par and hit the par five 18th in two and had an eagle putt to bring the match into extra holes, but he missed the eagle putt and Luke holed from 10 ft for a birdie to win his match. In match three Brian Crowdle was defeated on the 17th 2&1. Match four involving Kevin Power was the turning point in the tie, at this stage Carton House had won two of the first three matches and looked like winning match four also. Kevin was one down playing the 17th and when his par putt lipped out his opponent was left with a six foot putt to win the match, however his missed the putt which went two feet past and he also missed the return putt to lose the hole. Kevin hit a great drive down the par five 18th and his opponent found trouble and could only make a bogey on the hole leaving Kevin to win the hole and the match with a par. This left the tie at two all and as we said at the outset Carton were very strong at the top of the draw so it was great to be two all after the first four matches. In matches five and six brothers Harry and Richard Louis Duggan had been in control of their matches for most of the time and both closed out their matches with Harry winning on the 17th and Richard Louis on the 16th. This gave Kilkenny victory in the tie and Jeff Kiely in the last match who had just birdied the 16th to get back to one down was called in. The reserves on the day were Morgan Walshe and Dylan Smithwick and the team was managed by Luke Kelly and P J Martin. Carton House have been the kingpins in Leinster at Fred Daly level for the last five years and had won the All Ireland in 2011 and 2014. With the Gui academy based in Carton House they have been able to attract most of the good youngsters from Dublin and surrounding counties so it was a great achievement for the Kilkenny boys to get the upper hand. The boys will now head to the All Ireland Finals in Moyola Park Castledawson just north of Magherafelt County Derry on Tuesday August 25th. As a result of the All Ireland taking place on Tuesday August 25th the Juvenile Open Day which is due to take place on Monday Aug 24th may now be

cancelled. We will update when a decision has been made. Also on the Inter Club scene the Under 15 Boys will take on the Castle in the Leinster Semi Final this Tuesday Aug 4th in Kilkenny at 4pm. TREE FUNDRAISER TEAM EVENT Thanks to all who supported the Fundraiser for Tree replacement on the course last Wednesday July 29th. This competition is generously sponsored by SAP thanks to one of our own members Tom McInerney and the results are published in the results section below. JUNIOR / JUVENILE In the East Leinster Women’s Championship Katie Keenan was beaten finalist in the Duggan Cup losing to local Ardee player in the Final. Katie had a great run winning her first match at the 19th followed by a Round 2 win on 18. Conditions on Sunday for the semi-final and final were dreadful with players having to wait on water logged greens to be cleared. Katie also was runner up in the gross qualifying round.

Fellow Junior Jan Browne was leading qualifier with a great gross score of 81. Jan qualified in top position and had a comfortable win in her Round 1 match. She finally exited in Round 2 losing to the eventual winner of the Duggan Cup. No competition on Monday Aug 3rd due to Bank Holiday. Competition will resume on Monday August 10th. Junior/Juvenile Coaching continues on Saturday mornings, 10am for up to 6th class and from 11am for everyone else. Please be present at the clubhouse 15 minutes before your start time. We could do more adult volunteers to supervise the Saturday morning coaching sessions, last Saturdays session had to be cancelled due to lack of adult numbers. Any member or parent of a Juvenile who is willing to give a hand out please contact the office and we will pass on your details to organiser Michael Keenan. There is a rota in place so you would not be expected to be present every week. RESULTS JUVENILE COMPETITION Results Monday July 27th. Boys (Full Handicap) CSS 71 (36pts) 1.
