Now it’s a class for new teachers FROM THIS month all newly qualiďŹ ed teachers will have to return to the classroom and successfully complete an induction programme before they can be professionally recognised by the Teaching Council. The programme aims to support the induction of newly qualiďŹ ed teachers (NQTs) into the teaching profession in primary and post-primary. At the launch of the programme for Kilkenny Schools, the Director of Kilkenny Education Centre, Paul Fields, spoke about the value of such a programme. “For the ďŹ rst time the State has taken a formal place in the provision of induction for new teachers. In the past teachers had to ďŹ nd their own feet in their ďŹ rst job. This programme provides a structure and support for all newly qualiďŹ ed teachers, whether they are employed in a school or not,â€? he said. Paul was concerned that some new teachers in the Kilkenny area may not be aware of the new requirement as many of teachers are waiting to ďŹ nd a position and may not know about the new initiative. “It is widely acknowledged that building strong professional learning communities through programmes such as the Induction Programme will beneďŹ t schools as learning organisations in the long-term.â€? he added. Throughout the year there will be a range of professional development workshops on the following topics Newly qualiďŹ ed teachers are encouraged to register on the www. eckilkenny.ie The ďŹ rst session in Kilkenny was yesterday evening in the Kilkenny Education Centre, Seville Lodge, Callan Road.

‘Pay and File’ deadline approaching UNDER the Self-Assessment or the ‘Pay and File’ system as it is more commonly known, the date for the payment of tax and ďŹ ling of Tax Returns is after October. This system, allows you to ďŹ le your return and pay the balance of tax outstanding for the previous year at the same time. The system applies to self-employed people and to individuals receiving an income from sources where the tax cannot be collected under the Pay as You Earn (PAYE) system. Examples
include proďŹ ts from rents, investment income, foreign income and pensions, etc. The 2011 Pay and File deadline for Revenue Online Service (ROS) is Thursday after November 15, 2012. This extension applies to the return ďŹ ling and tax payment date for certain self- assessment income tax customers and for customers liable to Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT). In order to qualify for the ROS extended deadline, taxpayers must both pay
and ďŹ le though the online revenue system i.e. pay their income tax balance for 2011 together with their preliminary tax payment for 2012 and ďŹ le their Form 11 return through ROS. Where only one of these actions is completed through ROS, the extension will not apply and the deadline is October 31, 2012. The Finance Act 2012 amended the Pay and File date for CAT from 30 September to October 31. There-
fore all gifts and inheritances with a valuation date in the 12 month period ending on the previous August 31 will be included in the return to be ďŹ led by October 31, 2012. For beneďŹ ciaries who received gifts or inheritances with valuation dates in the year ended August 31, 2012 who make a CAT return and the appropriate payment through ROS, the due date is also extended to November 15. The Kilkenny County Enterprise Board is running a one-day workshop
on September 28 entitled ‘Tax Filing Deadline Approaching – Are you ready to ďŹ le a tax return and can you minimize your tax bill?’ which will provide participants with practical advice on how they should manage their tax affairs and make them aware of the tax reliefs and incentives that can be effective in reducing their tax liability. Double delight for Alan
Kilmacow 3, Mooncoin 0 The U15 soccer team won their opening ďŹ xture against Mooncoin. The lads played very well. Alan Murphy was once again the main man with two goals to start his season in style. David Costelloe scored the third goal with a mighty shot from way out. Team: Dylan Corcoran; OisĂn O’Dwyer, Robert Moore, Alex Grant, Jake Harney, Jacob Green, Brendan Leech, Larry Vereker, David Costelloe, Alan Murphy, Dale Carroll Morrow. Sub Shane Irish
Rangers shot down
Kilmacow 2, Park Rangers 0 Rangers eventually got to travel to Kilmacow for a match but it was the locals who won. Kilmacow started slowly and the visitors had a lot of the play. David Colleton settled any nerves when he scored. Kilmacow had much more of the play in the second half and when Colm Dolan scored the second goal it was game over. Team: Dylan Moore; Patrick Dollard,
Patrick Connolly, Fintan Leech (captain), Paul Hennessy; Niall Bowe, Rory Leech, Dean Scully, Cormac Suffin, David Colleton, Colm Dolan. Subs: Darragh McDonald, Keith Butler, Will Jolly, Tom Costelloe, Brian O’Mara, Conor Lyons.
Mixed fortune
The junior teams had mixed fortune. The 1B scored a great 3-1 win over St Saviour’s with goals from Sam Greene, Mark Delahunty and Ian Walsh. The Division 3 team lost 2-0 at home to Villa.
Good prospects
Ballyduff 0, Kilmacow 4 The ‘new’ team’, U14s, were the ďŹ rst to take to the pitch this season with this victory over Ballyduff. It was scoreless at half time as it took some time for the lads to settle down. A depleted home side played really well. Dale Carroll and David Costelloe got control in midďŹ eld. Colm Dolan scored the ďŹ rst goal this season. This was followed by a goal from Evan Duggan. David scored twice before the end. Team: Anthony McNamara; Kevin O’Mara, OisĂn O’Dwyer, Jake Harney, Cormac Suffin, David Costelloe, Dale Carroll Morrow, Evan Duggan, Shane Irish, Colm Dolan, Daniel Maher. Subs David Colleton, Fintan Leech, Niall Bowe, Patrick Connolly, Rory Leech.

Kathleen defends free travel scheme SINN FÉIN Councillor, Kathleen Funchion has called on Minister Joan Burton to give a clear public commitment that the free travel scheme will not be cut or restricted. She was speaking after it was announced that the Minister is to review the scheme. She said: “Last week the Minister for Health caused huge unnecessary anguish for people with disabilities who feared they would lose their Personal Assistants. He left them to worry for ďŹ ve days. “This week pensioners across the country are worrying that they will lose their ability to travel freely. How long will the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton leave them in this fear of isolation?â€? she asked. “The Minister said she ‘values the scheme’. However that is not good enough and I am calling on her to give a clear public commitment that the free travel scheme will not be cut or restricted. “I understand restricting peak times is being considered. I would remind the Minister that most older

Brilliant book is a credit to the author
Breda Raggett SEPTEMBER HAS arrived, the All-Ireland is over and it’s the time to prepare for winter. Schools have re-started and many young people are leaving home for college. For many it is the ďŹ rst time to leave home and fend for themselves. With that in mind, I am going to tell you about a book that every parent should consider giving to their student. It is Deirdre Madden’s ‘All about Home Economics’ which was re-published last year by her daughters Kate and Aisli. The book was ďŹ rst published
in 1983 and was part of Intermediate CertiďŹ cate Home Economics for over 15 years. Deirdre was a Home Economics teacher and wrote the book out of frustration at the lack of modern Irish Home Economics. She often quoted a much loved fairy tale: ‘I’ll do it myself said the little Red Hen; and so she did’. Her passion for the subject was because she felt the most important thing for students was life skills. Deirdre died in 1999 at the age of 56 as a result of breast cancer and 10% of the proďŹ ts from the book go to Irish Cancer Society. Everything you could wish to know about life skills is included, and what I like is that she has written in plain English. The ďŹ rst chapter is all about cookery including All About food, All About nutrition which includes a graph giving the fat content of everyday foods. There is All about cooking vegetables and left overs and All about starting to cook. About the house includes fridge management, heating,
floor coverings, home and hygiene, caring for our clothes including how to wash according to the labels on clothes, removing stains. There is a huge chapter on needlework including sewing equipment, hems and seams, how to sew on a button, to use a pattern for dressmaking, home sewing and mending and embroidery stitches. It is wonderful book whether you are a school-goer, a past student, setting up home for the ďŹ rst time or raising a family. This book is a musthave for everyone’s bookshelf. You can buy it in any of our local bookshop at â‚Ź16.99.

The Brothers at City Hall
City welcome for Indian Brothers INDIAN BROTHERS were welcomed to Kilkenny by local people of Hope. Tour operators called The Brothers who have worked as guides for the Hope Foundation for the past 10 years teamed up with local Hope man, Gerry Cody, aka the Watergate Theatre manager, when they visited for two days. The Brothers complement the work of the Hope Foundation who work with street children in Kolkata, once Calcutta, India. Gerry Cody was a guest of the Brothers when he visited India. Four Brothers were welcomed to our city by Bridget and Gerry Cody. The group visited Kilkenny Castle, Rothe House and St Canice’s Cathedral. In City Hall they met Deputy Mayor John Coonan who was told that with the help of Irish fund raising a hospital had been build for homeless and
the elderly. Deputy John said that Kilkenny people had a long tradition of fund raising for charities.
Mr Sadra thanked our people for all the help that had come from here over the years, saying he was aware of many functions to raise funds for street children. The Brothers enjoyed Celtic Cry at the Watergate Theatre before adjourning to the Hole In the Wall, High Street, where they were entertained by local musicians. Michael Conway welcomed the Brothers to the oldest pub in Kilkenny which was opened in 1582. Deputy Mayor John presented the Indian tour guides with a wallet of Kilkenny pen and ink drawings by local artist John Walsh.

Hundreds gather THERE was a carnival-like atmosphere in the town on AllIreland morn’ as hundreds of kids and adults gathered to make what has now become an annual pilgrimage to Croke Park. The town was gripped by hurling fever as the kids, some of them going to an All-Ireland for the first time, met at The Square, waiting for the convoy of M&A Coaches to bring them to the big match. The return journey was a little quieter but the mood was also quite confident as young and young at heart had already started the search for tickets for the September 30 replay. And then the fun starts all over again, a gathering at The Square, sing alongs on the coaches, and, touch wood, with the Liam McCarthy in tow this time.

THOMASTOWN has produced some fantastic hurlers over the years. Men like goalkeeper Ollie Walsh, full back Cha Whelan, forward Tom Walsh and many others are always spoken of with admiration and with a fondness which only a spirited local community can understand. Our snapper, Donal Foley, is a regular visitor to the busy business town, a town which is the pride of Kilkenny, a haven of the arts and entertainment,
a home for many sports, a great place to visit. And during his ramblings he called to neighbouring Bennettsbridge too, a village which has been home to many legendary hurlers, a comparatively small parish which once dominated the senior ranks of the local game, and, like Thomastown, had many super heroes who wore the black and amber with pride. His excellent photos tell their own story.

The bags have a suede interior and are unlined. They can be worn on the shoulder or hand held and are double stitched for added strength.

Business of the week CAULFIELD’S Supervalu, Loughboy is one of Kilkenny’s busiest supermarkets. With free parking and and a friendly ‘hello’ for every customer they are the first choice for many. They have a great selection of produce and are generally the first to stock any new
products that come on the market. They now offer a service where you can shop online and collect your groceries instore or have them delivered to your door. It allows you spend less by keeping track of your shopping bill as you go and you can also avail of special
offers. The service is free for ‘Click and Collect’ over €75 and deliveries over €150. Try it now and receive €10 off your first order when you spend over €60. Visit www.supervalue.ie to set yourself up and to view a list of delivery areas.
Theatre of the week ‘TED & Co – The Dinner Show’ comes to Langton’s Hotel at 7.30pm on September 20. Following on from the hugely successful ‘Fawlty Towers’this brings an Irish spin on the sitcom theatre meal format. The smash hit comedy treat promises to wow audiences with high-energy improvisation, audience
participation and perfect comic timing. The show is based on the cult TV classic ‘Father Ted’ and first debuted at last year’Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It sold out every show and picked up five star reviews and standing ovations. The show is interactive to the core and a delicious
three-course meal is included. This two-hour show promises to be an hilarious and fun evening, with the audience as the diners and Ted, Dougal, Jack and Mrs Doyle as the hosts. Not to be missed. Tickets are €45 so “Go on, go on, you will, you will, you will.”
Book of the week WITH ‘Telegraph Avenue’ Michael Chabon has crafted a great American novel. Chabon has written many fine things from his Pulitzer Prize winner ‘The Adventures of Cavalier and Clay to the screenplay for
‘Spiderman 2’. Here he surpasses himself with a book that has critics searching the thesaurus for the best superlative. The book tells the story of two men who run a record store in California and are under threat from a
large corporate chain. The setting is the hippy belt between Oakland and Berkeley and investigates race, sexuality and music. It has been called a modern day ‘Middlemarch’ but will also please fans of ‘High Fidelity.’
Product of the week ‘LAST Exit To Nowhere’ T-shirts are a must for movie nerds. Their brilliant designs are based on obscure references to fictional companies, brands or places within famous films. So if the Bates Motel, Nostromo, Amity island, Tyrrell Corporation or the Winchester Tavern mean anything to you then you simply have to get one of these ultra cool T-shirts.
Watch your friends try to figure out the carpet pattern from the Shining, Overlook Hotel or wonder about the origin of the origami unicorn from Blade Runner. There is a gorgeous worn look to all their graphics and are a definite buy for all fanboys who want to test their mates’ movie lore.
Event of the week THE second year of the John Martyn Tribute Festival not only gives the people of Kilkenny a chance to see the cream of Irish and international acts but pay tribute to this adopted son. John Martyn’s band will be in in Thomastown all weekend where he spent the last years of his life
performing many times for locals who came to know and love this wild soul. The real coup is James Yorkston whom many would see as carrying the torch for British folk that Martyn and Nick Drake first lit in the ‘70s. Mick Pyro from Republic of Loose will lend his support and for anyone nostalgic for
the ‘80s. ‘In Tua Nua’ will also follow up their recent comeback at Electric Picnic. There are many local and nearby musicians playing too from Ultan Conlan and The Man Whom to Thomas Donoghue who will all be there to play classics like ‘Solid Air’and ‘May You Never ’in the friendly pubs of Thomastown.

Exhibition of the week DON’T miss your last opportunity to see a wonderful exhibition by Robert Dunne at The Upstairs Gallery, The Watergate Theatre. Entitled ‘Plunge’ it runs until Friday. Robert grew up in what used to be a mining village. People mined for coal there for hundreds of years. A lot of the
activity was on a small scale and was never documented. Occasionally, the earth would cave in to reveal deep dark pits, which were part of a network of old mining tunnels. His mother would warn him not to play in areas which were believed to be unstable. “She tried to keep us inside. She wove a wire linked fence
around our house and told us stories about children falling beneath the ground. I was as mesmerised as I was afraid. This was my first landscape, this was my home,” he said. Robert’s work is mainly about this part of his life; of growing up in a community but being somehow separated from it.

Gig of the week ON SATURDAY, 8pm, the innovative DJ Shit Robot spins his decks in The Set, John Street. A Dubliner, Marcus Lambkin aka Shit Robot moved to New York, where he ingrained himself in the club scene with a number of residencies. It wasn’t until 2006, however, after he had moved to Stuttgart, Germany and aligned with LCD
Soundsystem’s James Murphy for a party dubbed Shit Robot that he began producing and remixing under that name.
From April 2006 through March 2010, Lambkin released four singles – with influences from electro and deep house to classic Detroit techno and old-school rave. He will be playing tracks from 2010’s ‘From the Cradle to the Rave’ along with some new material. Tickets are €10 and there is support from Cleveland Mike.
Food of the Week KILKENNY grown Second Nature Happy Heart Organic Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil is a joy to use. It is delicious in salad dressings, dipping sauces, mayonnaise, marinated vegetables, meat, fish and hummus. It can also be used in desserts such as flapjacks and crostini or drizzled onto soups, stir
fries or guacamole. This mild tasting oil adds an amazing flavour to cabbage, beans, potatoes or anywhere you want to replace butter. It is important that you buy your rapeseed oil in a dark glass bottle such as the one that Happy Heart Oil comes in as the high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids
(Omega 3 and Omega 6) are light sensitive and can be damaged by plastic. Grown locally on Drumeen Farm the oil is available from Silversprings Vegetable Shop, John’s Green; Glasrai and Goodies, Gowran; Shortis Wong’s, John Street, and numerous other shops around the city and county.

Having a party? Make sure Whether getting married or organising a debs, getting the correct spot is key to it being a success
W
EDDING’S vary in price from couple to couple. While some wedding planning love birds like to say their nuptials within six months of engagement and plan their wedding as quickly as possible, others like to save for years to ensure that they have the most extravagant wedding day humanly possible. We all know that the average Irish wedding costs in the region of €15,000, but how is that figure actually broken down, and, is it possible to still have an amazing wedding day without spending a small fortune? The answer is yes. We must not forget that a wedding day is about the celebration of love that two people have found ... not how expensive the dress was or how big the diamond is. Having a wedding is like having a big party, but with your best friends and family all in one place at the same time. You will want it to be special, and
therefore choosing the best suppliers is essential if you want your wedding to be a huge hit. The biggest spend will be entertaining your party. A wedding day is always a long occasion to attend for the wedding party, and the wedding guests. You will want your guests to be entertained and comfortable throughout the day, so one of the biggest spends will be the hire and catering of the wedding venue. There are plenty of fantastic wedding venues all around Kilkenny to suit the style and size of your wedding. Cut your costs when choosing a wedding venue by selecting and viewing venues that are the right size to cater for your party. A big wedding venue will be expensive if you are only having a small wedding. A smaller venue will hold everyone nicely and keep your wedding party interactive. In terms of catering, see if you can save
money by opting for a buffet over a threecourse meal, serving wedding cake as the dessert, or maybe see if any venues offer an all inclusive package which might include in-house entertainment. Getting married on a week day might also save you some money when it comes to selecting your wedding date, and your wedding venue. Other ways to cut costs on your wedding day might be to ask your guests to take photographs with their own cameras or table cameras so that you can then create a fun album with the shots, rather than paying for a photographer. Be creative and make your own wedding invitations, and while you have your creative mind on, maybe bake your own wedding cake? Honeymooning close to home, doing your own hair and make-up, and making your own wedding favours are all contributing factors to cutting costs in preparation for your wedding day.

you select the right venue? Top tips for organising a debs I
F you are organising a debs, make sure the date doesn’t clash with any important events – e.g. national football/rugby/soccer matches or any school associated events. Friday or Saturday nights are usually the preferred choice but book up early so start your planning well in advance. If you are having a reception in the school beforehand work backwards from the time you are expected at the hotel to ensure you allow sufficient time for the school reception, photographs and travel time to the venue.
Ideas for choosing the venue: zConsider
the distance from your school –
preferably the venue should only be 20 – 30 minutes from the school location so as to ensure that all guests will arrive on time. zWill you be providing coach transport from the school to the hotel – you will need to establish the number requiring such transport as many now opt for Limo & Hummers! If you are thinking of booking coaches to transport the debutantes, check out our list of Coach Hire suppliers. zSet your budget in advance and establish which venue will give you best value for your money – many provide all round packages which include entertainment, drinks reception, flowers, transport etc.
zEnsure
that the venue is sufficiently large making sure you take into account that you may have overflow at the afters.
Choosing the Entertainment (DJ and/or Band) THE hotel may provide the Dj and/or Band as part of their package. If you are accepting this as part of the package make sure you take the opportunity to go and listen to the DJ/band and are satisfied that they play or are willing to play, the type of music your fellow students will like. Whether it is a DJ or band sourced by your committee or provided by the hotel, it is
important to establish the following:
zHow long will the band play for. zHow long will the DJ play for zWill they play the type of music you want. zDo
they have professional equipment to provide a professional performance and sound.
zIf
the Committee are booking the DJ/band directly, make sure to re-confirm the booking a couple of weeks before the Debs night.

The force is with Murphy Frisky Business by Clodagh Murphy Reviewed by Edel Rooney FRISKY BUSINESS is Clodagh Murphy’s third novel. Girl in a Spin is a romantic comedy set in the world of politics and spin doctoring, The Disengagement Ring is a romance set during a summer in Tuscany. Having enjoyed both, I was eagerly awaiting Frisky Business. It didn’t disappoint. The central character is Romy Fitzgerald, who always planned to take a conventional approach to love and live; boyfriend, marriage, children. Let’s just say; motherhood via cupboard sex at a costume party with a stranger dressed as Darth Vader didn’t feature on her to-do list. But when she gives birth to her son Luke nine months later, he turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to her. As Luke gets older however, Romy knows that at some point she’s going to have to tell him about his father. Trouble is, she never found out ‘Darth’s’ real name. Her good friend Lesley throws her weight behind the search for the ‘closet’ dad, to hilarious effect. But when an old ame arrives back in her life, the plot thickens. Kit Masterson was always ‘the one who got away’ and now he’s back from New York and seems intent on playing happy families with Romy and Luke. But Kit has his own secrets to hide. As Romy begins to wonder if she’ll ever ďŹ nd her mystery man from the party, she learns that in real life secrets rarely stay hidden, especially when it comes to love. Will Romy ďŹ nd her dark knight or will she be left to raise Luke (Han) solo? Frisky Business is a wonderful funny and sexy take on the usual romantic
Dozen arrests after public order offences JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM
format, with a dash of mystery and intrigue thrown in. Romy is a warm, likeably lead character and you are instantly drawn into her life and those of her group of friends. The dialogue is sharp – there are many laugh-outloud line, the scenario is inventive and you won’t have to be a Star Wars devotee to appreciate some of the humour extracted from Romy’s unusual predicament. Murphy, as always, writes with great warmth and feeling for her characters and the element of mystery will keep you turning pages ever faster as the story develops. I zipped through Frisky Business in one, enjoyable weekend. Highly recommended. The search for the Bord Gåis Energy Bookshop of the Year is on! Trusting our intuition BREDA GARDNER COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH THERAPIST
0872025753
THE knowingness that resides within each and every one of us can be accessed through what we call our intuition. When we learn to contact, listen to and act upon our intuition, we can connect to the higher power of the universe and allow it to be our guiding force. In Western society, we have largely learned to respect and even worship our rational mind, and to dismiss or deny our intuition. It’s an irony that most of us deeply admire people who are intuitive, yet we often
we are quick to ignore our own intuition. And if we look back at the better decisions we made in the past, often we ďŹ nd that they were the times where we chose to follow our wiser instincts. Why is it that we simply don’t trust our intuition? Because we have so many voices going around in our heads: the voices of consciousness, old programming and beliefs, other people’s opinions and our own inner fears, doubts and indecision. With all that chatter, how do we differentiate
between our own true voice and the other voices? Firstly you must pay more attention to how you feel inside. Suppose during your day that you feel tired and your whole being tells you to rest for 20 minutes. You immediately think ‘I’m too busy! I should keep going!’ and so you continue your daily tasks. By the end of the day you are tired, irritable and drained – and the quality of your work has fallen away. If only you had taken that rest, you might have ended the day feeling
more relaxed, balanced and energised, and performed better in your work. When you chose to follow your intuitive feelings, suddenly you ďŹ nd that your energy ows better, you become more true to yourself, and you feel as if life is owing through you with a sense of calm and balance. If you would like to learn more about this topic, why not come along to my latest Positive Living Workshop ‘Trusting our intuition’ in Waterford. There’s no better time to upskill Ever get the feeling that life and opportunities are passing you by? DO you feel stuck in a job where you are continually overlooked for promotions or maybe you spend your days groping around the Internet looking for a new job. The feeling of being stagnant in your career is frustrating and can lead to anxiety over job security. If this sounds like you, it may be time to take action. Upskilling gives you the chance to develop new skills that will make you more attractive to employers – so you will no longer be passed over for those interviews and promotions. If your career is not progressing in the direction you want it to, the best thing you can do is to get proactive and invest in your personal and professional development. With newly acquired qualifications and skills, you could move onto a career path that better aligns with your interests and goals. So how do you know if it’s time to upskill and what skills should you start improving on?
Are you looking for a new job? HAVE you sent out dozens of CVs and job applications but feel like you’ve hardly made a blip on recruiters’ radars? Or after every interview you get a phone call explaining that another candidate was more qualified than you? These experiences are part of the job-hunting process for many people, particularly if you are just starting out or starting again in a new career. However, if you have been actively seeking a new position but feel continually let down by your current skill set or experience, it may be time to upskill. There is a clear association between the qualifications you possess and your ability to get a job. The first thing you need to do is to look at the required skills in the job ads that you are targeting, as well as the feedback you receive from recruiters. Do you tick all their boxes and have all the skills they want? If your lack of qualifications and training is holding you back, you should seriously consider further study. You can also develop new skills by engaging in volunteer or work experience roles in the industry that you wish to enter. As well, many companies have internship programmess that you can apply for, or provide in-house training to new employees.
Want to make yourself more valuable to your company? DO you feel under-utilised in your current position? Perhaps your tasks are tedious or maybe they are so easy that you finish all your work by lunch and spend the rest of the day trying to look busy. This may by ideal for people who are trying to take it easy at work, but it may eventually lead to feelings of uncertainty as your role may be seen as unnecessary. If you want to contribute more, grow in your role and increase your job security, you will need to actively seek out more responsibilities. Looking for opportunities to develop skills in other areas will not only expand your knowledge and experience, but will increase your professional value and send a positive message to your employer that you are enthusiastic and eager to grow with the business – highly desirable qualities in an employee. When seeking out areas in which to upskill, it’s good to get the guidance of experienced colleagues. You could begin by speaking to your boss about areas of the business that need more focus or support. Once you identify an area that you can become involved in, jump right in by offering to help. Doing a course at the same time can help enormously too. Perhaps you could develop your administration or IT skills in order to help support the everyday running of the business. Alternatively, you may identify an area in which
your company’s competition excels, which you want to develop in your own organisation. For example, having a strong marketing strategy will translate to increased sales for a business, so you may like to add strong marketing skills to your repertoire in order to help your business move forward – and turn yourself into a star performer in the process.
Are you looking to progress and gain promotion in your industry? EFFECTIVE managers and strategic executives are highly sought after, and organisations are willing to pay top dollar for great leaders. As a result, managerial and executive positions demand a greater investment of time and energy. Focus and hard work will be required if you are seeking to progress to an executive level. To get started on the journey toward your dream leadership role, it’s important to invest your resources into developing your management and leadership skills. You will need to learn to manage people, budgets, projects and planning, amongst other things. Completing an MBA is particularly valuable, as it will foster your leadership potential and strategic thinking, as well as provide you with a qualification that gives employers confidence in your management abilities. Another way of progressing to the next level in your career is to gain a higher qualification that builds on your previous education. For example, perhaps you have completed an undergraduate degree in your field that has taken you as far as you can go – and in order to advance, you need to take it that one step further, with postgraduate study. Now might be the time to complete a graduate certificate or master’s degree in your area. Engaging in upskilling requires a forwardthinking attitude and a desire to grow and learn. Employees and employers should be committed to continual learning, to keep themselves relevant and up-to-date. Developing new skills may mean new responsibilities for you, but if you follow your passion and interests it will also mean greater job satisfaction and greater rewards.

Be smart – and look smart Appearances shouldn’t matter, but more often than not you are judged before you’ve even opened your mouth PART of preparing for a job interview is making sure you are going to come across as a good addition to their company. Appearances shouldn’t matter, but the plain fact is that you are often judged before you’ve even uttered a word. Aim to dress one level up from what you would expect to be wearing if you got the job. It hints at your desire to progress and succeed within their company. If in doubt, always go for a classic plain business suit. Both male and female versions come in all shapes and sizes and can be picked up relatively cheaply. Combined with a clean shirt and preferably a tie, you’re unlikely to feel out of place. Essentially, if you feel comfortably, you’ll act comfortably which is vital in a pressure interview situation. Dressing the part is never something that will get you the job, regardless of how
clean your shirt or shiny your shoes. However, it could put the employer off if you fail to follow some basic rules: zNot too casual - If you get the vibe that casual is OK then stay on the smart side of casual. Ripped jeans, threadbare t-shirts and scruffy trainers should all be left at home. A smart pair of jeans and an open necked shirt is the bare minimum that is expected. zNo headwear – Under no circumstances wear a cap, beanie or hoodie to an interview – you’ll look like you’ve got something to hide. There are obvious religious and medical exceptions to this rule. zGet the right fit – If you’ve had to borrow an ill-fitting suit for an interview, or just generally like to wear your clothes a little too loose or tight, try and find something a little more regular. zNo flashing – Although it
may work in certain industries, cleavage and midriffs should be covered up for job interviews. You should be relying on your other assets to secure you the role. zWacky ties – As hilarious as you think they are, your interviewer is unlikely to see you as a new fun addition to the team, instead seeing someone who’s not serious about the job. zDon’t accessorise too much – remember you want your interviewer to be concentrating on what you’re saying, not the obscure purple broach you’re wearing. zSubtle make up – You could use make-up to emphasise your eyes and mouth, but should steer clear of anything too outrageous. zStrong odours – Too much perfume or too little deodorant can both be big turn offs, as can cigarette smells so make sure you smell nice, but neutral.
zFacial hair – The old phrase “Never trust anyone with a beard” is less adhered to nowadays so feel free to go in with your usual fur. However, do make sure it’s well trimmed and clean. zPiercings and tattoos z Another feature that is increasingly common, and one unlikely to deter an employer. If you can’t remove them, keep any studs small and cover any offensive or obscene body art. If you’ve had to come straight from work to go to the interview or need to return there afterwards, it’s possible that you will be in the workplace wearing completely different clothes than on a normal day. If you want to avoid arousing suspicion see if you can get an outfit that’s easily adaptable for both purposes, or alternatively ask a friend who works nearby if you can leave your interview outfit at their office.
