Waterford United in Job growth in Waterford and region is now the highest in the country cash crisis

Silicon City of the South East WATERFORD’S reputation as an unemployment blackspot could be a thing of the past with the city and South East now enjoying the highest rate of jobs growth in the country. And the emergence of the city as a ‘tech hub’ for technology start-ups has generated growing optimism among local business leaders and job creation agencies. The city received a massive boost last week after Waterford-based healthcare company EirGen Pharma announced it will create 200 highly-skilled jobs over the QH[W ÂżYH \HDUV 7KH FRPSDQ\ which makes cancer treatment drugs, is establishing a new product development centre at an IDA-built advance technology building (ATB) at Waterford Business and Technology Park. The Waterford ATB is one of 11 around the country which are part of the government’s regional jobs plan. Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said: “It is hugely encouraging that the South East is now enjoying the fastest rate of growth in the country. Business sentiment is getting better manager Anne-Marie Tierney-Le Roux described the 200 new jobs as a “highly sigQLÂżFDQW GHYHORSPHQW´ IRU WKH city and region.

HI-TECH: An employee at the EirGen plant in Waterford, where another 200 new jobs were announced last week

pied by a top-class company like EirGen, with the creation of 200 much-needed jobs for the city, is a great boost. Waterford Chamber of Commerce chief executive Nick Donnelly said the new jobs, coming in the wake of the announcements of the ₏17.3m city centre regeneration plan and the redevelopment of the North Quays, has given Waterford a very strong

momentum in the months and years ahead. Mr Donnelly told the Waterford Mail: “The creation of 200 new jobs is very sigQLÂżFDQW :H FHUWDLQO\ KDYH more ambitions - the job is not done. We have challenges ahead, but we have very good momentum now.â€? The Chamber CEO also welcomed the emergence of Waterford as a techological

hub for local start-up and international companies. He added: “Having a focus around a key sector or sectors makes economic sense because it means similar businesses will follow each other. We’ve seen evidence of that in Waterford. I know the fact that Genzyme are based here was a big factor in EirGen’s decision to expand. IDA South East regional

And she said the IDA is currently in “negotiationsâ€? with new companies who may be seeking to invest in Waterford. She told the Waterford Mail: “A record 23,000 more people are now at work in the region since 2012, and the unemployment rate has fallen since then from 21pc to 11.8pc. Mr Collins admits that a long-term strategy is needed to save the club. But he believes Mr Delaney could “secure the future of the club in one night if he agreed to a bout. “We need support. We need fans living in Waterford, all around the country and abroad to come together and ensure a stable future for the club, said Collins. People might think I’m kidding, but I’m not, we’d pack place out “But in the short-term, money is required to keep the show on the road. And that’s where a great Waterford United stalwart like John Delaney comes in. “People might think I’m kidding, or that this is a hangover from my recent dealings with the FAI. But it’s not. If anything, I’m holding out an olive branch. “Roddy versus JD, three rounds in the Woodlands Hotel. We’d pack the place out and all for a brilliant cause. We could secure the future of the club in one night.

PROPERTY MATTERS CORMAC FINLAY

An expert’s guide to buying an apartment WITH the massive shortage of rental properties in the city, now is a very good time to consider buying an apartment. Looking through the Daft. ie website, it certainly appears there are plenty of bargains for sale in Waterford. But when you see a 2 bedroom apartment available for under â‚Ź50,000 your ďŹ rst thought should be why? Make sure you do your research, just because a property isn’t expensive doesn’t make it a good investment. Firstly; the management fees, how much are they? A lot of potential investors don’t seem to take enough notice of these fees when comparing rental income between houses and apartments or different apartment complexes. I’ve seen this annual charge range from â‚Ź700pa to almost â‚Ź2000pa. This can make a huge difference in net return to the investor who should also consider the associated costs such as maintenance, tax, PRTB registration, letting agent fees and insurance. Sometimes its better to ďŹ nd a more expensive property with a lower management fee than a ‘bargain’ priced apartment with higher outgoings. Secondly; how is the management company operating?

You can tell a lot about the management company of a complex by how it looks; are the common areas clean? Are the ďŹ re panels in working order? Is the complex safe and secure? When you purchase a house you are solely responsible for how it looks, its state of repair, its grounds etc. However this is not the case with an apartment complex and so the way it is run becomes much more important. You should always ask as many questions as you can about the management company when considering a purchase. Thirdly; who are the neighbours? If the advertised apartment is much cheaper than other comparable apartments is it due to the neighbours? No matter how cheap an apartment is purchased for it’s not a good deal if you have neighbours from hell and no one will rent it. It sounds clichĂŠ but the saying ‘location, location, location’ applies to the desirability of a property and really matters when trying to attract quality tenants. If you purchase a budget apartment in a less desirable area of the city then your apartment will appeal to a tenant on a budget. ěŊ .1, !ĹŠ (-+ 8ĹŠ(2ĹŠ -ĹŠ 4!3(.-##1ĹŠ6(3'ĹŠ ( #138ĹŠ +4#ĹŠ 23 3#ĹŠ %#-32ĹŠ

From navigating the crowds to being monkey-savvy, there are a few tricks to getting the best out of a trip to Bali. Here are our top tips for your next visit to the Island of the Gods.

Be cautious of wild and stray animals Give wild and stray animals a wide berth. The novelist Washington Irving had it succinctly when he wrote: “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine but desert us when trouble thickens around us; who will still cling to us, and endeavour by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.’’ )DUHZHOO WKHQ 0DLVLH ,W ZDV D EULHI ÂżYH \HDUV ÂżYH PRQWKV DQG D KDQGIXO RI GD\V ² EXW H[TXLVLWH For me, your life was not about how you survived the storms of nine decades, but about how you danced in the rain ‌

Is your head a pain in the neck? BY Trish Hayden YOUR head is about the weight of a bowling ball, but when that’s balanced evenly on the top of your spine that’s no problem. However, if you’re the type of person whose head

sticks a little forward, that head starts to feel very heavy indeed, and in fact gains 4.5kgs (10 pounds) in weight for each inch forward. This forces the muscles in your upper back and neck to work much harder

to keep the head from dropping forwards onto your chest. With your muscles in constant contraction to achieve this, pressure is added to the nerves at the base of the skull, which can cause headaches, and neck

and shoulder pain. An easy way to check your QHFN SRVLWLRQ LV WR OLH ÀDW RQ your back. Ideally your chin will be more or less in line with your forehead. While here, you can also check by looking at the ceiling. If the alignment is good, you’ll be looking straight up, but if you have a head forward position, your gaze on the ceiling will probably be a few inches back. In this case, when lying on your back in a yoga class, it is always recommended to have a small foam block or towel under your head, otherwise the cervical spine or neck curve becomes compressed. Forward head posture is a very common postural issue, and it is estimated to occur in between 66% and 90% of the population. One practical thing to do is take stock of your daily movements. If working at a computer position the monitor so that the top third of the screen is level with your eyes and placed between 18 and 24 inches away from your face. Another major contributor is tension while driving and hunching over the wheel, as is sleeping on multiple pillows. Stand or sit as straight as possible and imagine someone is pushing your nose toward the back of your head. Using your neck muscles pull your head back while keeping your eyes level. You’ll look like you have a double chin but hey, it won’t last. In this exercise, focus on lifting your chest also, but without jutting out the ribcage. It may help to imagine you have a helium balloon attached to each of your chest muscles, and they are gently lifting them towards the ceiling. Sometimes, just lifting the chest causes a natural realigning of the neck. However, from a yoga perspective, a more comprehensive approach would be used. For all your home & interior tips IT’S everywhere, from the pages of almost every interior magazine, fashion shoot and style guide. Scandi style is creeping into every corner of our lives. Firstly it was through television and crime novels

if you really want to commit to this style you should start with white and the occasional grey on a feature wall. Now as you know, there’s no such thing as just ‘white paint’ so choose a bright white or one veering towards a grey undertone. Now that your foundation is right it’s time to look at furniture. Look at what you have and what needs to go. Anything with clean lines is workable. Steer clear of anything too heavy or dated like old furniture, pelmets and velvet curtains. Rely on throws and cushions to create added colour. Scandinavians love geometric decor and soft furnishings. Look out for rugs, bedding, throws and cushions. MODERN MINIMALISM: Scandinavians love geometric decor and soft furnishings. Look out for rugs, bedding, throws and cushions. Blues, pale greens and yellows work wonderfully well.

I AM bad at maths. But this is an equation I learned from my numerate husband. It might take you thirty minutes to do something. But it took you thirty years to learn to do it in thirty minutes. One of my favourite poems is by James Fenton, called The Ideal, it states: A person should respect what he has been. This is my past which I shall not discard. This is the ideal. This is hard. He worked in warzones as an occasional reporter and KH KDV OHDUQHG VRPHWKLQJ IURP REVHUYLQJ FRQĂ€LFW <RX can only remain yourself if you know who you are in GLɤFXOW VLWXDWLRQV Which is why I was keen to tell a new friend, a Waterford native who has taken his experience to the world and learned from this and brought it all back home DV D UHWXUQHG HPLJUDQW ZLWK D ORW WR RÉŁHU D UHFRYHULQJ economy, that he was way too humble with handling his talent, his knowledge and his acumen. But it’s have learned.’ not good to discount where you have been, where you have come from, what you have learned. I prefer Robert de Niro as a comedy actor to his method past, but he brings his methodical past to his current lightness of being, in roles such as The Intern, which he played with a measure of irony, an eye glint, that could only be woven through the character from his own personal experience. He helps a hapless Anne Hathaway, playing as CEO of a new online venture, take her genius and translate it into belief. Working as her unpaid intern he assists a transformation she could not have achieved without his character’s four decade experiences of working environments. As the plot unfolds she realises her discomfort around him was to do with the fact he knew more, but didn’t wear that medal on his lapel. He just drove through her rudeness by parking his own car and waiting until she came to him. I am going grey. Slowly. I don’t pluck these out because I know I earned each one in an experience that makes me who I am. I came this way. If I do things in a heartbeat it’s because I raised my heart rate extending myself in long working hours and dedicated service, to what I do and what I believe in. Those two things make me who I am. FORD ECOBLUE ENGINE IS A DIESEL GAME CHANGER

Ford reveals all-new 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue engine; first in a new range of advanced Ford diesel engines delivers unrivalled package of fuel efficiency, performance and refinement Clean-sheet design reduces friction with innovations including an off-set crank, belt-in-oil and Ford’s first use of modular camshafts for a 13 per cent fuel efficiency improvement Ford’s first mirror-image inlet manifold and a lowinertia turbocharger with rocket engine materials help deliver more than 20 per cent more low-end torque; enhanced drivability helps commercial vehicle drivers effortlessly tackle challenging everyday driving scenarios Ford revealed the first new Ford EcoBlue advanced diesel engine that will offer optimised fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 and NOX emissions* for customers, using sophisticated technologies and innovative design. Building on the industryleading performance and technology of Ford’s awardwinning EcoBoost petrol engines, Ford’s range of EcoBlue diesel engines will power the company’s future passenger cars and commercial vehicles with power outputs ranging from

100 PS to 240 PS. The four-cylinder 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue debuts in the new Transit and Transit Custom commercial vehicles, delivering an unrivalled package of fuel efficiency, performance and refinement. Drivability is enhanced with 20 per cent more torque at 1,250 rpm compared with the outgoing equivalent power 2.2-litre TDCi diesel engine, helping commercial vehicle drivers effortlessly tackle challenging everyday driving scenarios such as creeping in traffic, or overtaking slower-moving vehicles. The new engine also delivers passenger car refinement to the commercial segment, reducing radiated noise by 4 decibels at idle. “Ford’s EcoBoost created a new standard for petrol engines – smaller, more efficient with surprising performance. That same obsession to innovate for the customer is behind our new Ford EcoBlue diesel engine range,” said Jim Farley, chairman and CEO of Ford of Europe. “This new engine lifts fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 by over 10 per cent in Transit, part of Europe’s best-selling commercial vehicle lineup, lowering costs for our customers.” An all-new engine

architecture delivers reduced friction and a clean-burning combustion system. Sophisticated after-treatment processes for exhaust gasses enable ultra-low emissions in line with stringent Euro Stage VI standards that will be introduced in September 2016, requiring a 55 per cent reduction in NOx emissions compared to Euro Stage V standards. Advanced technologies include an integrated intake system with Ford’s first application of mirrorimage porting for optimised engine breathing; a lowinertia turbocharger featuring rocket engine materials designed for high temperature applications; and an all-new high-pressure fuel injection system that is more responsive, quieter and offers more precise fuel delivery. Developed by Ford engineering teams in the U.K. and Germany, the versatile all-new 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue engine initially will be offered with 105 PS, 130 PS and 170 PS in commercial vehicle applications. Capable of delivering more than 200 PS, the engine will later feature in Ford passenger cars alongside further new EcoBlue engines – including a 1.5-litre variant.
