City Airport in crisis as London service is axed Airport faces fight for survival as search for a new carrier to replace troubled VLM gets underway Waterford Chamber of Commerce chief gives stark warning: ‘If we let this go, we may never get it back’
WATERFORD Airport and the local Chamber of Commerce are desperately seeking a new airline carrier to ensure our regional airport’s survival. The search comes after the shock annoucement that VLM Airlines is to end its Waterford-London Luton service. ,WV ODVW ÀLJKW GHSDUWHG IURP the airport on Tuesday. The loss of the London service is a major blow to the airport and the local economy. Independent TD John Halligan, who was recently appointed as Minister of State, has said he received a commitment for funding for an extension to the airport runway in return for his support for Programme for Government. But the airport faces a race against time to persuade another airline company to come to Waterford. The Waterford Mail has learned that talks with a number of carriers are already un-

Deputy Cullinane also called for a meeting between the minister, the Airport Board and Waterford’s four TDs to discuss the crisis. Deputy Cullinane told the Waterford Mail: “We have seen many carriers come and go over the last decade and we need a viable, long term and sustainable plan for the airport.”

DÊise Boy Now we’re even Our man is on the ball
Finding another airport saviour is no easy task JUST when we thought things were starting to look up ... fate deals us another cruel hand. 2Q 7XHVGD\ WKH ODVW ÀLJKW from Waterford Airport to Luton - linking us directly WR WKH JUHDW ¿QDQFLDO FHQWUH of London - departed from the city. There’s no other way of the looking at it: the loss of the route is a major blow to Waterford and the South East, and it has cast a major shadow over the future of the airport. And unless another carrier can be found - and quickly to revive the route it’s hard to see how the airport can survive in the long term. &RQ¿UPDWLRQ WKDW WKH Belgian airline VLM was cancelling the Luton service shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The writing was on the wall some months ago when it pulled the plug on the Birmingham route. Then it emerged the troubled company had ¿OHG IRU EDQNUXSWF\ LQ DQ Antwerp commercial court. Waterford Airport CEO Desmond O’Flynn tried to put a brave face on it, insisting it was still very much business as usual, but then what else could he be expected to say? Let’s face it, for ordinary commuters getting to London was far cheaper - and often faster - going from Dublin to Heathrow or Gatwick with Aer Lingus or Ryan Air than it was via Waterford and Luton. I don’t doubt Deputy Halligan’s sincerity, but I fear this could be a bit of a red herring: if we can’t convince small numbers of people to use the service, how will they be persuaded to come in larger plane loads? Also, the Government has repeatedly said it will not invest in infrastructure for regional airports, but Deputy Halligan has so far been quite successful at getting them to perform u-turns when political expediency demands it. However investment in the runway, even if it ever does come, is not a solution to the very immediate problem facing the airport. Sinn FĂŠin TD David Cullinane is absolutely correct when he pointed out this week at a “viable, long term solutionâ€? is required for Waterford Airport. But right now the harsh reality is that we need to convince an airline company to take a punt on Waterford, and in the short term. And the fact that Ryanair or Aer Lingus appear unwilling to do so may make it a rather hard sell.

Waterford captured in all its serene beauty in first photographic book dedicated to the Déise county
Still life under a lens
NATURAL BEAUTY: BEAUTY Waterford W Quays at night (top), Burnmahon Beach (above left) and the sun sets on Copper Mines (above right). These are just some of the pictures taken by photographer George Munday of his adopted home over the past decade.
9 JUNE 2016
WE already knew Waterford’s scenery is among the most stunning in the country, and now a photographer who came here to live here has captured the county is all its serene beauty. George Munday swapped city life for the peace and tranquility of the Co Waterford coast back in 2003. He soon fell in love with the the scenery of adopted home, and he has just launched a new book of photographs he took of Waterford’s best known landmarks over a 10-year period. George told the Waterford Mail: “Waterford has a very rich heritage and I tried to spread it around the county as much as possible. “County Waterford can boast the oldest city in Ireland, SUHWW\ ¿VKLQJ SRUWV D PLQLQJ OHJDF\ KLVWRULF DUWLIDFWV ancient castles and charming villages. It’s a substantial and varied heritage waiting to be explored.” Originally from Liverpool, which he describes as “the secw oond capital of Ireland,” George ggraduated from the Birminghham School of Photography in 11975. He started a photographic caH rreer as a photo-journalist in the UK before relocating to Dublin U WWR FR IRXQG 6OLGH¿OH With the era of digital phottography, competition became ttoo intense, so George and his wife decided to move out of w the capital. By this stage he had travelled to every corner of the
country, but decided to settle near Bunmahon. In 2003 he swapped city-life for the County Waterford coast, where he ran workshops and worked as a freelance for clients including Tourism Ireland. George said he was taken aback by the fact there were no books on photography about his adopted county, so he decided to remedy this himself. His recently released book, Waterford: A County Revealed, features 160 full color pages of his best shots of the county, from Dungarvan to Dunmore, from the Waterford Quays to the Comeragh Mountains. It also inludes an introduction by the renowned travel writer Dervla Murphy. George says part of his aim is for Waterford Revealed to allow people who have never been to the county to take in its beauty, but also to give Déise natives who are a long way IURP KRPH WKH FKDQFH WR UHÀHFW on the beautiful landscape they left behind. George is adamant he will not make any money from the book, which he describes as a “labour of love”. He opted not to go with a major publisher because he says price would have been too high and “I wanted to make it as cheap as possible”. George individually prints each order of the book and delivers it personally within a week. For more information, or to place an order, visit George’s website: www.waterfordrevealedblog.wordpress.com

for mums and babies THE health beneďŹ ts of omega-3s are well known in relation to heart health, cholesterol lowering beneďŹ ts and reducing inammation e.g. rheumatoid arthritis. The speciďŹ c beneďŹ ts of healthy fats for pregnant women and their babies is relatively new. Key beneďŹ ts for babies include improved vision and cognitive development, better sleeping patterns and a healthier distribution of body fat. For mums, beneďŹ ts include a more healthy duration of pregnancy and a possible decrease in post-natal depression. Unfortunately many expectant women and ladies planning pregnancies are regularly consuming enough of the Omega 3 (EPA & DHA) fats in their usual diets. DHA is an abbreviation for Docosa – Hexanoic –Acid! BENEFITS FOR BABY A scientiďŹ c study published in the journal Lipids measured improved visual acuity in 4-month-old infants whose mothers received DHA- Omega 3 fats daily during pregnancy. Research published last year in Nutrients looked at cognitive development in infants born to mothers consuming seafood throughout pregnancy compared with non-seafood eaters. Important insights included signiďŹ cantly improved language and social activity scores at 15 -18 months of age. Researchers also observed a signiďŹ cant reduction in the number of children with suboptimal IQ and behaviour scores. Another beneďŹ t for baby is better sleep. In 2012, researchers measured improved sleep / wake states in infants of mothers who consumed 300 mg DHA daily during pregnancy compared with infants whose mothers received a placebo. It found more appropriate healthy patterns of fat deposition in babies born to mums consuming more omega-3 DHA through diet compared with mums who had lower intake during pregnancy. BENEFITS FOR MUM In a recent study published in BioMed Research International, the gestation period lengthened by four days for mums who increased DHA intake by 300 mg per day through ďŹ sh and other dietary sources. A shorter gestation time
is associated with greater risk of ADHD in schoolage children. It is thought that oily ďŹ sh consumption more than once per week correlates with a decreased risk of hyperactivity compared with women who ate no ďŹ sh during pregnancy. Some studies indicate that 300mg DHA omega 3 fats during pregnancy reduced symptoms of post-natal depression, however further studies are needed to conďŹ rm this. DAILY REQUIREMENTS AND BEST SOURCES The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends that all pregnant women should consume an additional 700-1400mg/week of DHA (EFSA, 2010). This is in addition to the requirement of 1750mg/week combined EPA and DHA. This increased intake can be achieved by consuming 1-2 portions of oil-rich ďŹ sh per week (FSAI, 2011). The best sources of DHA are trout, salmon, mackerel and sardines (FSAI, 2011). MERCURY Certain types of ďŹ sh can be a source of environmental contaminants such as methylmercury. High levels of methylmercury may be harmful to the foetus. Pregnant women should avoid the consumption of marlin, shark, ray and swordďŹ sh and limit consumption of tuna to one serving of fresh tuna (150g), or two 240g cans of tinned tuna per week. Album of the week
A Headful of Dreams by Coldplay Coldplay’s seventh album features more guests than any previous Coldplay record, with BeyoncÊ, Noel Gallagher, Tove Lo and Merry Clayton among those appearing across its 11 tracks (12 if you count the buried treasure of the hidden track X Marks The Spot). A followup to 2014’s fragile and lovelorn Ghost Stories, Coldplay have made an album that’s bursting with energy and colour, such as the deliciously ebullient first single Adventure Of A Lifetime and the rocket-powered Hymn For The Weekend.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Battery Share
Now a major motion picture staring starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, Me Before You is an existential work that’s masquerading as a beach read, a novel with beautiful characters who have complicated, textured souls. After a motorcycle accident leaves Will Traynor paralyzed, he loses his desire to live. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou Clark is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.
Unfortunately, batteries have a knack for dying when we’re running late, and no doubt many of us have been on the receiving end of several missed calls and texts simply because our phone couldn’t turn on. Battery Share warns selected friends and loved ones when you have a low battery. It also notifies you when their phone is about to die. This gives you the opportunity to contact them before they become unavailable. Notifications are customizable, so you can select exactly who receives notifications.

The arrival of Venus as an Evening star on Monday just after Sunday’s New Moon, should be seen as offering a fresh start to all signs. True, these are early days and it will take some time to adjust to this cosmic tempo. It’s likely also the case that there are some matters still to be resolved before you feel you can move on Your ruling planet, Venus, appears as an Evening star from this Monday. Venus is associated with both relationships and with money. This new phase - which lasts for some months - could have accelerated development as it comes so soon after a new Moon. Before the end of this week a significant financial partnership could form Following Sunday’s New Moon in your sign, Venus arrives as an Evening star also in Gemini. At this point, it could feel as though all the lights are on you. Others may well be hanging on your every word yet are also concerned about your motivation and long-term plans. The middle of this week could find you caught up in tense negotiations. The special thing about this week is that it begins with a New Moon that is quickly followed by Venus’arrival as an Evening star. Though all this takes place in neighbouring Gemini, all signs are affected. For you, a fresh look at how you market yourself, revision of your CV and perhaps an updated wardrobe could all be manifestations of this vibrational shift. Mercury continues its journey across the apex of your solar chart.Talking about your career, hopes and aspirations may be necessary - especially as it becomes apparent that colleagues and partners aren’t working to your agenda. Hold the thought that Sunday’s New Moon andVenus’arrival as an Evening Star marks another phase and that dialogue is essential - even if it’s discomforting. Sunday’s New Moon followed byVenus’arrival as an Evening Star on Monday accents the career zone of your solar chat. Over the next couple of weeks you could launch an initiative for completion in March 2017. Putting together a team, relaying your plans, creating a business plan and generally organising this venture should suit you well.

Your ruling planet, Venus, appears as an Evening Star as of Monday - and in Gemini, another of the Air signs. Coming just a day after the Gemini New Moon this signals a promising new start (especially where relationships are concerned). This could indeed be the start of something big! Tempting as it may be to think forward, there are matters from the past requiring resolution. An important new bond could form this week - and with someone who has your entire well-being at heart (financial, emotional and spiritual). The combination of Sunday’s New Moon and Venus’ arrival as an Evening star on Monday should suit you well. True, it might not seem that way midweek when Mercury opposes Mars in your sign.
Sunday’s New Moon (in your opposite sign) is followed by Venus’ arrival as an Evening Star (also in Gemini). It’s probable that those close to you are preparing new adventures - with one project scheduled for completion next March. Your role may be not just to support, but to advise and facilitate. It might help to know that the week begins with a New Moon (think fresh start) and Venus’ arrival as an Evening Star on Monday. Hopefully this heralds a break in stormy clouds that have gathered for several months. Fresh dialogue could open up. True, it’s likely that there are problems still to face and tricky issues to negotiate mid-week. Midweek Mercury and Mars oppose one another accenting the back-bone of your solar chart as they do. It might be as well to anticipate hiatus regarding a property, family or career matter: and yes, the issue may link all three together. If you’ve already moved you might think about doing so again - or det New Moons are said to bring fresh starts. Sunday’s lunation is enhanced by the appearance of Venus as Evening Star. Those Pisces forever waiting for‘something to turn up’may realise that wish come true. By next weekend and thanks to‘good’news brought about through connections with someone born under one of the Air signs , you could feel significant progress is made
