Double top ... our camogie champs crown great season Waterford Kildare

2-09 1-05

WATERFORD completed a memorable double by adding the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland intermediate camogie title to the Division 2 league crown they won earlier in the year. That means that Stephen Fleming’s crew will be operating at the top table in both competitions next year DQG ZLWK ¿YH PLQRUV VWDUWLQJ this game, they look like a force for the future. They had to recover from a very slow start to record a third win over Kildare this season as the premier junior champions of 2013 made a bold bid for honours. In the end, it was two goals at either end of half time that

decided the issue. While the scoring rate wasn’t particularly high, the heavy rain that persisted for most of the game had much to do with that. So too did the defensive structures of both sides, with Kildare drawing two halfforwards deep and Niamh 5RFNHWW ¿OOLQJ D VLPLODU UROH for Waterford. It was Kildare that started best with a third minute goal from Noelle Earley, followed by points from Melissa Lyons and Emer Reilly. Ethan and the Mayor compared their medals, Ethan received his Summer Reading Medal from Library staff in Ballygunner School. A very happy pupil who obviously loves to read.

Origins of Dungarvan unearthed THE origins of the west Waterford town of Dungarvan may have been unearthed by a local archaeology project. An extensive survey by the group suggests that Gallows Hill was possibly the location where Dungarvan was founded, according to geophysicist Kevin Barton. The results of the Gallows Hill Community Archaeology Project may reveal the early origins of the mound known locally as Gallows Hill on the outskirts of Dungarvan. Theories as to the origins of the hill over the centuries have included a Barrow, Motte & Bailey Castle, a mound built by Cromwell’s forces or possibly a gallows. The group plans to publish WKHLU ¿QDO UHSRUW ZLWKLQ WKH coming months. 7KH ¿QGLQJV VXJJHVW *DOORZV Hill was built as an important Norman defensive settlement, shortly after the Anglo-Norman invasion in 1169 and before the Castle on the quay was constructed. This indicates Gallows Hill as possibly the geographical location where Dungarvan was founded, making it an important landmark of the town and county.

Don’t burst the South Sea Bubble MICHAEL WOLSEY As I see it IN THE early eighteenth century a fad for investment swept Europe. The world was opening up, industry was growing, and adventurers and entrepreneurs of all sorts were looking for funds. The early opportunities were mostly sound and investors got a return on their money but as the craze grew many people subscribed to business ventures which had little substance and made OHVV VHQVH 2QH R྾HUHG VKDUHV LQ ³D FRPSDQ\ IRU carrying on an undertaking of great advantage, but nobody to know what it is. This trend culminated in the South Sea Bubble, a business carried by a wave of mass hysteria which cost thousands of people their life savings. They invested in a venture based on a trade that did not exist. It had no hope of success but was swept along for quite some time by its own momentum. I often think of this when I read that some young whiz kid has sold an oddly named web- based company for zillions to some fat cat who is loaded with money but short of ideas. 2U ZKHQ , UHDG DV , GLG UHFHQWO\ WKDW ³D FRPSDQ\ founded in San Francisco in 2011 by four Irish men has landed $35 million (₏31 million) in Series C funding from investors – funding that will see their workforce double both in California and Ireland within the next year.

On the face of it, this is good news. Happy days for the men in question and the expanded venture will be bringing 70 new jobs here. The same goes for the Waterfordbased company with the more typically silly name of FeedHenry. It was sold last year for ₏63m to an American company with the equally irrelevant title of Red Hat. So what does FeedHenry do that is worth ₏63m? One migrant’s story of the search for a better life PAUL HOPKINS Talking the talk ANOTHER week for politics — and, in part, another sordid step into the fear and loathing that is xenophobia. It was hard to believe the migration debate could become any more repugnant. A member of the Taste of Kilkenny Food Trail, the focus at Foodworks has always been on local ingredients – and this really means local in their case, as much of the food served comes from the family farm on the outskirts of Kilkenny City, where they have a food production kitchen and smokery, grow vegetables and herbs in polytunnels and rear their own saddleback pigs. The dinner menu, simply presented on A4 paper, offers about six starters and nine main courses; highlights include excellent fish cooking and, of course, their own pork – which also features at lunchtime, when the choices might include a platter of free range pork along with dishes such as, eggs Benedict, the Works burger and Fish n’chips, plus daily specials. Desserts including variations on old favourites, such as baked Alaska with lemon drizzle, may be hard to resist. Foodworks is both airy and inviting in a restored bank building. With natural light flooding in through tall windows and doors at the front, it’s a light and airy space and the black and white

themed room makes an interesting place to eat, with a handsome Art Deco ceiling and wall lights, padded banquette seating - and a view of the chefs at work, seen through a pass hatch at the back. Visit: foodworks.ie

Education Training Youth injury prevention study launched THE country’s first ever Adolescent Injury Prevention Programme was launched by IT Carlow and the GAA earlier this month. Training overload, skeletal immaturity and adolescent growth spurts, combined with training errors, poor techniques and mismatched age groups (size, maturity and experience), has resulted in an “unsurmountable increase” in the number of lower extremity injuries in 13-18 year old hurlers and Gaelic football players according to Dr. Clare Lodge, a Chartered Physiotherapist and Lecturer at IT Carlow. She will lead a research programme designed to monitor and prevent the growing epidemic of adolescent sports injuries and facilitate a healthy player pathway from underage to adulthood. “Adolescents are vulnerable in terms of overload and growth related injuries in sport and Gaelic games are no exception to this with young players often playing for school, club and county, often in more than one age and, as a result, potentially exposing themselves to avoidable injuries”, she says. Countries such as the US and Canada are currently leading the way in preventive treatment in adolescent sports injuries with Canada

developing a national strategy to address the growing issue of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries in the adolescent population. However, no such research programme has been undertaken in Ireland do date – until now. The programme will be run out of IT Carlow’s healthCORE campus research centre, with the full cooperation of the GAA, over 24 months. Participating schools will take part in structured warm-ups, incorporating the five key areas linked to injury prevention, as well as self-wellness monitoring and self-reported injury incidence through a smartabase application. Coaches and trainers involved with secondary schools in Leinster and Munster (traditionally participating in the senior schools tournaments) are also to be included in the study. They will be educated and mentored throughout the season with a designated sports scientist and required to implement a learned programme at the start of every training session or pre-match participation, during the trial period. Neuromuscular components of each player will be evaluated at the start, middle and end of the research period to explore and analyse any acquired physical effects that may have occurred.

Waterford 1100 schools winners NEWTOWN School students have won the Waterford 1100 competition, organised by Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) Business School. The winning team had entered a visual project which addressed the establishment of

Waterford by the Vikings and examined social, trading and military aspects of the early settlement. The team members were Sarah Morris, Emma Swift, Emma Galloway, and Helen Crews - all transition year students at Newtown School.

Ted Lynch WIT Librarian, John Maher Chair, Centre for Newfoundland and Labrador Studies, Emma Galloway, Emma Swift, Sarah Morris from the winning Newtown team and Karen Keogh, TY Coordinator Newtown School Photo: George Galloway

They were mentored by their teacher Ms Karen Keogh. The project was financially supported by Chartered Accountants Ireland, Glanbia Plc, Enterprise Ireland and the Teachers Union of Ireland. Ted Lynch, Head Librarian, chaired the presentation ceremony The organisers were John Maher, WIT lecturer in Accounting and Kieran Cronin, Developmental Librarian at WIT, both members of the Centre for Newfoundland and

Labrador Studies. John expressed his appreciation to the schools, teachers and pupils in Waterford city for their cooperation with the project. “This project was designed to give students a sense of their identity in Waterford and to obtain insights regarding the relationships between social, cultural, economic and trading aspects of community life,” he commented. Dr Thomas O’Toole, Head

of Business School, at WIT who presented the €100 book token prizes to each winner, commended them on the design of their work, the enthusiasm which it communicated and the commitment they showed in undertaking the project. “Such qualities will serve them well as they proceed through their education and later in their adult lives and careers,” he said. The organisers have announced the launch of a similar event for 2016. It

will be based on the socio economic progress obtained over the last century since the Easter 1916 Proclamation. Details will be circulated to schools in the South East in the coming weeks. Kieran Cronin says it will give students an opportunity to consider how people lived, worked and traded in 1916, to compare that experience with what prevails today and to reflect on the catalysts and the patterns that this comparison reveals.

The Framing of Harry Gleeson by Kieran Fagan When Harry Gleeson reported that he had found his neighbour Moll McCarthy dead of gunshot wounds in a field in New Inn, Tipperary, he speedily became the number one suspect. It was 1940 and Moll was an unmarried mother of seven children. Gleeson was convicted by an all-male jury within three months - and sent to his death within five months. City Break: Düsseldorf A VISIT to Düsseldorf can show you the best of Germany in microcosm. The city has some of the country’s largest modern art collections and an opera house and concert hall that produce work provincial companies elsewhere in Europe would struggle to match. Leave your heart in San Francisco S

AN Francisco has it all. Occupying a hilly 47-square mile thumbprint at the top of a peninsula, the City by the Bay is blessed with a spectacular setting, beautiful open spaces, truly diverse culture and a bridge that’s the envy of the world. But beyond all of this is a certain audacious spirit that’s

hard to define, characterised by decades of progressive movements and the idealists, entrepreneurs and pioneers who started them. It’s a spirit that makes San Francisco feel like it’s always one step ahead, and it’s an invigorating and optimistic place to be. Among the reasons why San Francisco continuously ranks as one of the USA’s most

liveable cities is its patchwork of walkable neighbourhoods, each with their own distinct character. Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow are awash with Victorian houses and antique stores; exclusive Nob Hill has elegant hotels and milliondollar views; Haight-Ashbury still retains a hint of its hippy past, and North Beach brims with Italian bakeries, boho

boutiques and Beat generation bookstores. But despite being constrained by the ocean and the bay, the city rarely feels overrun. Green urban spaces like Golden Gate Park and the Presidio, and chilled-out harbourside towns like the artistic enclave of Sausalito mean nature and relaxation are never far away.

Basilika, which was first built in the 13th century, and which with its twisting spire helps make Düsseldorf ’s skyline unique. Fans of German beer and Oom-pah should love its intricate, pubfilled old town. The city also has a more modern side, and people who prefer something rawer will feel at home amongst the Media Harbour’s off-kilter new architecture and minimalist bars.

The right way to bronze By Emer Kelly OUR summer is over. What summer really? But we want to keep a sun kissed glow. The best way to achieve this is applying bronzer. When learning how to apply bronzer, you need the perfect touch, too little and you don’t get the desired sun-kissed glow. Brush on too much and you can end up looking orange. Two essential tricks for how to apply just the right amount of bronzer. 1.Your tools are very important. Apply bronzer with a large, fluffy brush that features natural bristles this will give a more even look than a smaller brush will gi ve you. 2.Where to apply the bronzer? To the top of the forehead, under the cheek bone, and under the jaw line to create a ‘3’ shape along the side of the face. By applying in soft sweeping motions, this will add warmth as well as enhance the best features of your face that will really sculpt your angles in a gorgeous, feminine way. Practise makes perfect. Enjoy and have fun with it.

BEAUTY MIRACLES With so many beauty products out there and so many claims to fame it’s hard to know which ones really will deliver those oh-my-God results. Each week we’ll feature a fail-safe beauty miracle beauty product – one the experts swear by... NANOBLUR INDEED Labs created this clever tube of skin tightening and smoothing serum to tackle concerns created by HD cameras - the pesky things highlight every imperfection. And so Nanoblur was born. It effectively blurs lines and flaws on the skin with special technology. It uses millions of micro-prisms to create the illusion of poreless skin. It also brightens skin and evens out the texture in only a few seconds. To get the most out of it, use it underneath powder make-up or on top of liquid make-up, or blend it with your favourite moisturiser to make it go further. The only downside is that the effect is not permanent - it’s a quick fix solution. Nanoblur. Available from Boots.

Myth or fact: Preparation H - wrinkle buster? MANY of us learn everything we know about beauty from the women in our lives, but do Old Wives Tales really work and which are just tales? Beauty Tip: Preparation H eliminates eye puffiness and wrinkles The Claim. Years ago, rumour had it that the hemorrhoid cream Preparation H was the cure all for wrinkles. Grandmothers everywhere were seen dabbing it around their eyes for what they claimed was an instant de-puffying lift. The Truth. While Preparation-H did once contain Bio-Dyne (also known as LYCD – Live Yeast Cell Derivative), an ingredient famous for its wrinkle-reducing effects, the product has since been reformulated and no longer contains LYCD. As a result, any reports about its power against wrinkles are no longer relevant. So while Preparation H may have worked for Granny, you’re better off using an anti-wrinkle cream.

Film review

On the Stage

American Ultra

Rated: 15 A MOVIE that could have gleefully gone over the edge, but lacks the confidence in its own premise to truly get as weird or as funky as the concept demands that it goes. American Ultra is one of those films that – frustratingly, annoyingly – begins at its end. Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) sits in a nondescript interrogation room, handcuffed to the table. He’s battered, beaten and

bloody. An agent approaches him, lays out a series of photographs, and asks Mike where he’d like to begin. The movie then rewinds, through EVERY key scene that’s about to be played out in American Ultra, successfully spoiling our movie-going experience while also eliminating any and all suspense about Mike’s fate. That’s the first of several curious decisions that ensure it never lives up to its full potential.

BEAUTIFULLY scripted and perfectly cast, Me & Earl & the Dying Girl is a coming-of-age movie with uncommon charm and insight. Anyone who buys a ticket to a film called “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” goes in fully expecting to cry. It’s sort of a given. The surprise, then, is the laughter: the near-constant stream of wise, insightful jokes that make it so easy to cosy up to characters dealing with a tough emotional situation. The story of a high-school senior forced to befriend a classmate who has just been diagnosed with leukemia, and the sincere, nonsexual connection that forms as a result, this rousing adaptation of Jesse Andrews’ novel is destined not only to connect with young audiences in a big way, but also to endure as a touchstone for its generation.

Mazda6 The third generation Mazda6 is a huge improvement over its predecessor and represents an under-rated choice in the Mondeo-sized medium range segment with its sector-leading SKYACTIV technology driving down running costs. Most UK sales will be of the 2.2 diesel models, but could the frugal 2.0-litre petrol versions actually be a better bet for lower mileage buyers? Andy Enright checks out the improved version and decides. DRIVING EXPERIENCE It really can’t be emphasised enough how much the SKYACTIV programme of reducing the weight of this 0D]GD KDV EHQH¿WWHG WKLV model in terms of the way it drives. It’ll accelerate quicker, stop more sharply, corner more keenly, the suspension will be DEOH WR LWV MRE PRUH H྾HFWLYHO\ and you won’t be exacting such a huge demand on brakes, transmission and tyres. It’s a real virtuous circle but Mazda has to balance that against the usual demands of making the car more spacious, better equipped, safer as well as making it feel betterbuilt. That is a really tough assignment, more of which later. The petrol engines we’re focusing on here haven’t really changed very much with the latest revisions, though 0D]GD KDV LPSURYHG UH¿QHment. The 165PS version improves those ¿JXUHV WR V DQG NP K In both cases, drive goes to the front wheels via a slick sixspeed manual gearbox, unless you want to pay a bit more and go for a six-speed auto. MARKET AND MODEL Going for a 2.0-litre petrolpowered Mazda6 rather than the 2.2-litre diesel will save you around ₏2,900. Essentially, you’ll be looking at paying somewhere in the ₏27,000 to ₏34,000 bracket, depending on your choice of trim level, your decision between manual and auto transmission and your selection between saloon and the kind of Tourer estate bodystyle that requires a premium of around ₏1200 over the equivalent four-door. All the main items of executive kit are included, whichever variant you choose. The mainstream SE and SE-L grades now include an electronic parking brake, a coming/leaving home headlamp function and the Multimedia Commander with separate volume dial. There’s manual driver and front passenger seat height adjustment and a 7-inch, full-colour touch-

screen which incorporates DAB radio and the MZD Connect infotainment system some may already have seen on the smaller Mazda3. This pairs with a smartphone to bring internet connectivity into the car with onboard access to social networking. That deserves a like. It’s probably the best car in its class to drive and can return over 50mpg in regular use. Plus it’s spacious, safe and good looking. Equipment levels have improved with this revised version and the pricing is about where you’d expect it to be, although your Mazda dealer might well be open to a spot of discussion on that particular score. Previously with this car, we complained a little about the rather low rent interior, but Mazda has moved swiftly to correct that issue with this improved model. Which leaves very little to fault.
