One of the highlights of this year’s Waterford Country Fair, at the historic Curraghmore House and Gardens, Portlaw, will be Jousting Scotland’s jousting team, Les Amis d’Onno, which will bring their “ Knights of the North” spectacular to the Fair on Sunday, June 12. Jo Breheny, Chair of Waterford Country Fair, said: “With fearless jousting knights displaying their wonderful horsemanship and battle techniques in skill at arms, foot combat and tournament jousting, it’s going to be a massive crowd pleaser.”

Don’t rely on gut feeling when buying your home

Having a weedy good time at the Bealtaine outdoor festival

Top: Marie Power, aka The Sea Gardener, forages for seaweed at Kilfrassy beach, Co Waterford during The Bealtaine festival of outdoor science to celebrate the living earth organised by Calmast WIT. MANY home-buyers rely on a gut feeling, and it’s always good to trust your instincts. But I’m sure you’ve often purchased an item of clothing in haste at some stage during your life and ended up with ‘buyer’s remorse’. So when making what will probably be the biggest purchase of your life it’s vital to ensure this isn’t how you end up feeling shortly after you walk through the front door. To make sure you are buying the most suitable property you must firstly assess your budget. If you have applied for and received mortgage approval from a bank then this will be pretty clear cut. If you are a cash buyer then set a limit and stick to it. Think about your ‘needs and wants’. “We need three bedrooms but we want a big back garden.” Your needs should always be the priority not matching these will surely lead along the road to ‘buyers remorse’ in the future. The second major thing to consider is if you want to live in a house or an apartment. Apartment living is great for some; no garden maintenance, city centre locations, modern clean and fresh. But you also

have the additional service fees and proximity to neighbours to consider. A house generally means more space, less noisey neighbours, no service charges but more maintenance and investment in the property over time. Nearby amenities should definitely be considered when home hunting. The old phrase ‘location, location, location’ springs to mind. There’s no point matching your needs, wants and budget but ‘making do’ with a location that will never work. The final question you need to ask yourself is; are you prepared to do some refurbishment or building work? A lot of buyers want a turn key condition property and can’t visualise how poorly presented properties can eventually look. There are some bargains to be found if you’re prepared to do some extra work. The benefit of being prepared to take on a ‘fixer upper’ is that you’ll get the home you want, right down to the fixtures and fittings, although the additional work will need to be factored into your budget. • Cormac Finlay is an auctioneer with Liberty Blue Estate Agents

HOW TO PACK IN STYLE... Bikini: I imagine you’ll get a few stares if you go without one! If you’re on a budget you can’t beat Forever 21 selection of Bikinis and you can buy a full set for as a little as €4.80! Maxi Dress: If you buy nothing else this summer, you can’t go wrong with the good auld reliable maxi dress. They look sexy, stylish and can be sophisticated looking when heading out for a nice meal at night. Where to Buy: River Island and Littlewoods.ie are my favourite places to find a really good selection. You pair your maxi dress with some wedges and some funky accessories and boom you have an outfit which you can go casual into night! Hats: I love hats and I always bring a straw hat with me where ever I go in the sun as I never leave the sun get at my face hence no wrinkles yet! A straw hat is essential for summer. Where to buy: I love the selection in Penneys and for only €5 how could you go wrong? Flip-Flops: No outfit is complete in the sun without a comfy stylish pair of flip flops for days lazing by the pool.

Where to buy: I love River Islands Selection of flip flops for €25 or you can get really nice pairs in Penneys for as little as €8 Sunglasses: No outfit is complete with a pair of stylish sun glasses. Check out River Island’s copy designer sun glasses for only €17. I don’t know about you, but gone are the days for me of buying sun glasses for €200- €300. What is the point of splashing the cash when they almost always end up being scratched, lost or stolen! At least if you lose your €17 pair you can say they served their purpose. Dress: The little black dress. You can’t seriously think about going on hols without packing your LBD for a perfect summer night on the town. Asos. com have a great selection of

dresses with prices starting at €20 bargains! Clutch: Big clutch bags are in again this summer, (remember you are trying to travel light!). Check out River Island’s selection of clutches starting at €30 and will be perfect to complete your summer look. Accessories: I’m obsessed with accessories, they can dresses up any outfit. You can’t go past Penneys’ massive selection starting for as little as €1. Heels: Make sure you pack a tan or nude pair of wedges both colours will allow you to wear them with most outfits. It also cuts down on the amount of shoes you have to pack them to go with most outfits and therefore lets us cut down on the amount of the pairs we have to bring. +DSS\ KROLGD\V /RYH /ROO\ [[

Wine O’Clock l Chilean out with a redhead W IN seventeenth century France, some wine makFr ers er crossed the red Cabernet n Franc grape with the white w Sauvignon Blanc. They were just playing T around a and had no idea what they might create. w What W they came up with was Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape gr which has become the most m popular source of red wine around the world. It w is the key grape in the blended win wines of Bordeaux and the g sole grape in many wines produced elsewhere. It gi gives full-bodied, fruity wines that develop well in the bottle or in oak casks. They all share a rich, smooth characterist and taste of blackcurteristic

rant and cherry, but they vary a lot depending on where they have been produced and how, and for how long, they have been allowed to mature. In the last century, production of Cabernet Sauvignon spread to many countries, from the Napa Valley in California to the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon. It found a home in New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay, Australia’s Margaret River and Coonawarra regions and Chile’s Maipo Valley and Colchagua. The big Australians and some of the Californians are too fruity for my taste - I don’t mind drinking blackcurrant but I draw the line at blackcurrant jam. They are also

alarmingly high in alcohol. I prefer the subtler tastes of the New Zealanders and, best of all, the Chileans, which are smooth and fruity but light. Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Especial 2011 has cherry as well as blackcurrant in its ÀDYRXUV DQG LV JRRG YDOXH DW ₏14.99 from Dunnes. But if it is value you are after , you won’t beat Cimarosa Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, ₏6.99 at Lidl. In that same style of lighter, brighter red is PÊrez Cruz, Cabernet Suvignon 2013, ₏18.99 from Florrie’s Fine Wine, Tramore and independent retailers.

TALKING THE TALK PAUL HOPKINS

The TV actors who wind up dead AS I was saying last week, I have been an inveterate follower of TV crime shows going back to my early teens but of late am totally hooked on the newer genre which brings a grittier realism to matters of law and order. , KDYH MXVW ÂżQLVKHG ZDWFKLQJ VL[ VHDVRQV RI %OXH Bloods. It stars Tom Selleck (he of 80s’Magnum PI fame) as NYC Police Commissioner Francis Reagan, third generation New York Irish. What sets it apart from the pack is that all of widower Frank Reagan’s family are involved in law and order. His widowed father is a former commissioner, his divorced and only daughter is an assistant district attorney and his two sons are cops, one a decorated homicide detective, the other a rookie but with a Harvard degree in law. There was also a third son, Joe, who we never see but is often referred to at the weekly Sunday dinners in the family home which tend to be an epilogue of each episode and where all loose ends are tidied up. Joe was shot in the line of duty, working undercover. Blue Bloods, shot entirely on the streets of NYC, could have easily fallen into a cardboard pastiche Âľ79 FRS GUDPDV of predecessors. But it never has and is seldom KDYH XSSHG WKH less than riveting, with YLROHQFH DQG frequent references to real life, such as the days GHOLYHUHG PRUH of Frank Serpico, the famed whistleblower, and VKRFN YDOXH RQ how former Mayor Rudi WKH DXWRSV\ WDEOHÂś Giuliani cleaned up the streets of NYC. There is another great cop show with a rather tentative Irish connection. Law & Order SVU, now in its 18th season, stars the very talented Mariska Hargitay as Det. Olivia Benson. When the series originally aired in the late 1990s, she had last billing on the opening credits. In the last decade she has had top billing, is now also a producer of the show, and is the highest paid actress on American TV. Mariska Hargitay’s mother was the late Jayne 0DQVÂżHOG RQH RI WKH OHDGLQJ VH[ V\PEROV RI +ROO\wood in the late 50s and 60s. It all means more work for extras, casting agents and makeup artists who supply corpses in various stages of decomposition. Such shows have hundreds of prosthetic chests that can be cut open during autopsy, organs that can be pulled out and removable limbs. A ‘freshly dead’ body requires an actor being on the set for merely one or two takes. A body that is ‘morgue dead’ requires an actor to be still for three hours or more to get into chalky-white full-body makeup and a ‘Y incision’ across the chest. The pay? Between $150 to $200 a day. Some days it pays to be dead ‌

To BBQ or not to BBQ? That is the question... Inga’s Eye On Design For all your home & interior tips LAST weekend I really thought we were into the BBQ season. How naive was I, judging by the weather we’ve had in the past few days. Nonetheless I remain optimistic. Already I’m sure the

rusty aul BBQ has been dragged out, cleaned and ready to go. In a lot of cases a new one will have to be considered. There is a great selection to be had from Woodies, Argos and Norris’s. Just looking at

them can conjure up that smokey woody smell that attacks our nostrils with a pleasurable sense of cooking, sunshine, memories, family and friends. Whether it’s charcoal, gas or building your own, there is a wide variety of designs and sizes to suit your space and pocket. People nowadays are better equipped in the art of barbecuing. I’m thinking here of my grandparents, what would they think ? “Are you going back to being a caveman or what. The word barbecue comes from a Spanish interpretation of the Caribbean word “Barbacoa.

YESTERDAY I was in an exam hall, a community centre on the fringes of the city, and as well heated as Greenland, working on a rickety secondary school table I propped up with two folded Kleenex, writing reams. There were two reasons – one was to qualify in skills I lack. The other was to experience what exams are like again. My lecturer thought I was mad saying this but then his kids aren’t old enough for him to realise what a young person at this time of year goes through. Exams are not for the faint hearted. There was a queue for the one toilet that was working in the hall yesterday. It was a mixture of post Leaving Cert BA students and us mature round-the-block ones. The things we all had in common? We hadn’t revised early enough. We weren’t as prepared as we should have been. We were all nervous. Which is the other reason I did it. And I’m reminded that if this is what education is designed for it really isn’t working. This is what they will learn when school and college is over. By chance on Facebook I saw the Class of 1985, my class, photographed on the steps of my school. I realised the exam hall of yesterday was not dissimilar to the one I went to that early summer. I returned to my 17 years old self, a model student having a bad year. Years later I was at Delphi, the Greek temple, where the ancient emperors went for guidance, and the inscription above it read Know Thyself. Album of the week

You can also type, draw or just save a voice recording. One more plus — if you’re the type of person who likes to write down sensitive information (bank account numbers, passwords, etc.) Kicknotes can be passcode protected.
