"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Áras Phádraig ‘has massive potential’ KILLARNEY has welcomed news that plans are afoot to make use of the Áras Phádraig building again. Kerry County Council this week confirmed it is to seek to appoint a consultant who will have overall responsibility for the development of the Lewis Road complex as a centre that will be available to facilitate the public. “We have issued a request this week for tenders for a feasibility study and business plan for the Áras Phádraig to guide our decision on what should be done with the property in the years ahead,” said Owen O’Shea, Kerry County Council PRO. “Tenders should be received by September 26 and a successful applicant will then be appointed to carry out the study and prepare a business plan.” It is estimated that the feasibility and business plan will be completed by the end of November. Killarney Mayor Councillor Brendan Cronin warmly welcomed the news, saying many in Killarney will have fond memories of the building. “I remember the Tops of the Town shows at the Áras Phádraig and also youth club meetings there and even attending films and plays there,” he said. “It was a main hall in the town and also provided meeting rooms, which were built on to it.” Adding he believes the complex has “massive potential”, the Killarney mayor said: “I would love to see it redeveloped. The bottom line is, it’s a great facility and many of us have links to it and great memories associated with it.” This development comes seven years after the Franciscan Order donated the facility to the people of Killarney. The donation was made in conjunction with the then-town council. The Lewis Road complex includes a theatre/hall and balcony as well as meeting rooms and a kitchen. Cllr Michael Gleeson said: “It is of vital importance that individuals, groups and organisations will interact with the consultant and make their preferences known.”

A new lease of life for Áras Phádraig at last? IT’S strange to think of it now, but the first movie I ever went to see as a child was in the Áras Phádraig. Back in the day, the complex was a real hive of social and cultural activity. From blood donation clinics (yes, the first time I ever donated blood in Killarney was in the building) to plays staged by the Dóchas troupe of thespians, to classes of various descriptions, it served as a real one-stop shop for all ages.

Many have lamented the fact that this wonderful facility has fallen into general disuse despite being donated by the Franciscan Friars to the town in 2009. Circumstances may have dictated this was so, but hopes are high that this latest development will prevent this valuable, landmark building from falling into disrepair and off the map EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

Killarney maintains top-ten anti-litter status IT WAS a case of Happy Monday for Killarney, which started the week with the good news that it had maintained its top ten status in a major anti-litter study. The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows Killarney in ninth position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities and once again deemed “Cleaner than European Norms”. Our town is a former winner of the IBAL Anti Litter League. While nearly all of Ireland’s main towns are now clean, pockets of our major cities continue to suffer from significant levels of litter. The study, conducted by an Taisce, showed only two of 25 towns surveyed to be littered, but 7 of the 8 bottom places in the rankings to be occupied by city areas. IBAL says councils need to concentrate on those specific areas where the problem is worst. The An Taisce report on Killarney stated: “Killarney has been a top-performing town for a number of years in the IBAL Litter survey and this high ranking is continued in 2016. Some of the particularly good sites included High Street and Main Street, the residential area of Countess Grove and Plunkett Street – the latter had colourful windows boxes and nicely presented shop fronts.” Kilkenny once again topped the table, ahead of Enniscorthy, Kildare and Waterford City.

ou should have been given a pay slip by your employer when you were paid. Your pay slip can be provided to you either in electronic format or in hard copy. Under the Payment of Wages Act 1991 all employees have the right to a pay slip which shows the gross pay and details of all deductions. A pay slip is essentially a written statement from the employer to the employee that outlines the total pay before tax and all details of any deductions from pay. Certain deductions from pay are allowed under the Act. They include deductions that are required by law, for example, tax (PAYE), Universal Social Charge (USC) and social insurance (PRSI). Deductions provided for in your contract of employment, such as occupational pension contributions, are also allowed. You should ask your employer for pay slips for the three weeks that you have already worked. If your employer fails to give you those pay slips and continues to pay you without giving you a pay slip, you may make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). To do this, you make a complaint under the Payment of Wages Act using the online complaint form available on the WRC website, workplacerelations.ie. The Workplace Relations Commission also provides information on your rights and entitlements under employment legislation. For further information about your employment rights on pay slips and deductions from wages, you can contact its Information and Customer Service at Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or through the website, workplacerelations.ie. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Heroic Donal to the rescue A YOUNG Killarney man has been hailed as a hero after his dramatic rescue of tourists on Lough Lein after a boat went into difficulty in choppy weather conditions last week. Donal O’Donoghue Junior, also known as Dux, pulled a dozen people from the water after the vessel they were travelling in became submerged as it travelled from Ross Castle to the Gap of Dunloe last Thursday morning. The passengers clung to the boat after what was described as a freak wave swamped the vessel. However, five bicycles they had been transporting with them as well as belongings such as mobile phones and cameras were lost. Donal, who operates a touring boat for a different company, had been on his way back from a trip to the Gap of Dunloe. “A squall had come out of nowhere, with a strong wind

blowing across the lake,” he told Killarney Advertiser. Because of this, he headed back from a trip to the Gap and was returning to shore at Ross Castle. He was alerted to the plight of the stricken boat by the driver of a waterbus, to which he transferred his passengers before returning back on the lake, to Foilcoille Point. Donal, who was travelling with his canine companion Charlie, ferried the rescued passengers to Library Point before they were returned safely to Ross Castle. A spokesperson for the Marine Survey Office at the Department of Transport said the office had received a report and an investigation has already commenced.

Killarney gets set to brew up support for Kerry Hospice WELL, the fabulous aroma of freshly brewed coffee was in the air on Wednesday as Killarney Advertiser caught up with the team behind the upcoming Kerry Hospice Foundation coffee morning. The Killarney branch of Kerry Hospice is inviting everyone to join the event as it unfolds from 10am to 12 midday in the Killarney Royal Hotel on Thursday, September 15. In addition, O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar, Killarney Outlet Centre; and Killarney Credit Union, Beech Road, will host coffee mornings. Other businesses and individual householders will host events to tie in with the funds drive also. “This is always a very well supported event and we are very grateful for that,” said Pat Doolan, chairperson, Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “Outlets in Killarney raised in the region of €3000 last year.”

Joanne Brosnan, Killarney Royal Hotel, Pat Doolan, Angela Curran and Conor Cusack launch the annual coffee morning organised by the Killarney branch of the Irish Hospice Foundation which takes place on Thursday, September 15.

‘Insanity’ of junction layout TRAFFIC has been causing consternation among road users at the High Street junction with many calling for a solution. Killarney Municipal District mayor Cllr Brendan Cronin said it is a priority for him during his term as mayor. “From day one, I have spoken of the insanity of the layout and design of this junction,” Cllr Cronin told Killarney Advertiser. “I am eagerly awaiting the traffic management plan and I hope to get sight of it this month.”

At the presentation of prizes of the Killarney Senior Open pre-season squash tournament hosted by Gleneagle Squash Club were front from left, Martin Brett, Donal O'Sullivan (Open C winner), Brendan Lawton (Open A Plate winner), Maciej Truchan (Tournament Director), Martin J McDonnell (Open A winner), Cathal Lynch (Open B winner) and Clive Morgan (Open A runner-up). Plough straight ahead for Fossa IF YOU think the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show is just for those with an interest in ploughing, then think again! The event will offer 200 trade stands, traditional and modern method ploughing demonstrations, sheep dog trials, sheep shearing competitions, harvesting demos, machinery showcases and traditional farm practice exhibitions. Several food zones will be on site at this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show and there will be activities and novelties on the day for people of all ages and interests, including vintage and classic vehicle displays, stationary engines, competitions for fabulous prizes and so much more. Charities to join in the fun at ploughing WITH over €60,000 generated for good causes in the past two years, the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show is a major source of fundraising for local charities and this Sunday’s big event at Fleming’s Farm in Fossa will continue that great work. The four beneficiaries this year will be the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry Cancer Support Group’s Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus and representatives of all four charities will be in attendance on the day to host a number of novel promotions and sideshows. The Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association is running a raffle with a first prize of a stunning vintage 1948 Ford Anglia Tombstone up for grabs and a runner-up prize of a helicopter ride over the Lakes of Killarney. The Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association will also display a full-size dialysis machine on the day and volunteers will be distributing organ donor cards to interested members of the public. Down Syndrome Kerry will have a marquee at the ploughing with a children’s corner to include nail painting, tattoos and face painting and Killarney hairdresser Julie Healy will also be providing children’s haircuts, in a specially adapted rally car, on the day. It will also raffle a sleek Berg Buddy John Deere with the draw taking place at the ploughing championships at 5pm. The Irish Pilgrimage Trust is a children’s charity that has been bringing young people with a variety of special needs, from all over Ireland, on pilgrimage and holiday to Lourdes for over 40 years. Irish Pilgrimage Trust personnel will be at the ploughing with sandwiches and home baking along with teas and coffees available for purchase with all proceeds going towards the charity. The charity will also have a raffle on the day for two All-Ireland football final tickets. The Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus team will be present on the day with a pop-up shop providing teas, coffees, cold drinks and snacks as well as information and a chat. However, if you want a real treat on the day make sure you visit their very special chocolate fountain.

Well, this Sunday you will get the chance to shine at the charity baking competition being held as part of the South Kerry Ploughing Championship and Harvest Show. All aboard as O'Callaghan Coach Holidays unveils 2017 brochure IF YOU experience wanderlust at this time of year then the launch of the O’Callaghan Coach Holidays brochure will be of huge interest! The Killarney business hosted the extremely well attended event at its office on the Tralee Road on Thursday. There was great excitement, with Radio Kerry’s Francis Jones interviewing some of O’Callaghan Coach Holidays’ regular customers and its drivers. The family-run business has been going from strength to strength over the past five years and is continually expanding its portfolio of tours. “The coach holidays team works with people of all ages for their private and scheduled tours, with everything from day trips to longer tours within Ireland, the UK and Europe,” said Catriona O’Callaghan of O’Callaghan Coach Holidays. An exciting development is an increase in the special interest holidays such as the guided walking holidays, with both Croagh Patrick and Ben Nevis included in the new brochure. O’Callaghan Coach Holidays will also be running supporters coaches to all the Kerry GAA games next year, as well as coaches to international rugby and soccer games and Dublin concerts. New exciting holidays next year include Historic Dublin, Ireland’s Ancient East, Ancient Stonehenge to Charming Canterbury, Lille and the Windmills of Holland as well as a new eight-day tour to Lourdes next June. “There are no luggage restrictions, no airports, you just sit on the coach and let O’Callaghan Coach Holidays worry about the rest!” said Catriona. The Christmas trips to Dublin are gaining in popularity year on year and with seven travel dates this year already filling up fast, O’Callaghan Coach Holidays have added extra dates for 2017. For further details call 064-66-31095, email info@ocallaghancoachholidays.ie or check out www. ocallaghancoachholidays.ie or text your name and address to 0872611188 to receive a new 2017 brochure directly in the post.

Would you like to be a Scout leader? KILLARNEY SCOUT GROUP is looking for leaders for its four sections – Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures. Beavers are boys and girls aged 6 to 8, Cubs are boys and girls ages 9 to 11, Scouts are boys and girls aged 12-15 and Ventures are young people aged 16 to 18. Each section has one weekly evening meeting in Lissivigeen National School or in the outdoors. There are also outdoor activities on some weekends as well as a summer camp. “We welcome new leaders who may only be available for some activities as well as new leaders who would be available for all activities,” said spokesman Mick Moore. “Scouts operate in small groups, emphasising good citizenship and decision-making. They engage in activities such as hiking, camping, watersports, bushcraft, cooking, first aid and problem solving.” Mick added: “Scouting helps young people to get jobs, make a difference and even save lives.” The scouting experience is made possible thanks to adult volunteers, added Mick. “You can be a Scout leader if you love the outdoors and if you want to learn and engage in scouting activities,” he added. “We have a training programme for all new scout leaders. It is not necessary to have ever been involved in scouts in the past. Garda vetting will be arranged by the scout group. Volunteers often find that their experiences in scouts are useful in their work and personal life.” If you are interested contact Mick Moore at 086-6023287.

Killarney Community College builds on its strengths SURPRISES were on the timetable at Killarney Community College as it opened its doors for the new school year. Not only has there been a dramatic change in class duration, but on their return to the classroom, students were greeted by a new principal as well as finding themselves enjoying much more space in the beautifully extended premises on New Road. Stella Loughnane, who has been deputy principal for eight years, has replaced Fiona O’Brien as principal, with Fiona being seconded by the Department of Education in a leadership capacity to roll out the new Junior Cert programme. Meanwhile the college welcomes Eilish O’Leary as new deputy principal and six new teachers in a variety of teaching capacities. Of its impressive new extension, Stella said: “Due to growing numbers in the college we were granted four new classrooms by the Department of Education and Skills. These rooms will be fully equipped with Wi-Fi and data projectors. The parents’ council fund-raised to create a foyer or meeting space between the rooms along with a corridor out into the new wing. We have a beautiful tree on the property that was important to us to preserve so we took this into account when planning, and also designed a walled window so that the tree is now a focal point of the foyer.” Killarney Community College is also the first school in town to move to onehour classes. “Because of this, room for teachers and students to participate in active classroom methodologies and instructional strategies is now of paramount importance,” said Stella. “The building was also designed to be 'future proofed' so that if we are ever fortunate enough to receive more funding in the future we will be in a position to continue this style of modern build. The college has also just completed a comprehensive renovation of all bathrooms, all are now brand new!”

Get in step to raise funds for people with multiple sclerosis DESPITE the positively tropical temperatures we’ve been basking in this week, the launch on Tuesday evening of one of Killarney and South Kerry’s most popular and enduring annual events was proof that autumn has indeed arrived. Like clockwork every September, members of the South Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland gather at the gates to Knockreer to unveil details of the annual Old Kenmare Road walk which takes place this year on Sunday, October 9. “The 2016 event is the 14th annual walk and as always it promises to be a great family day out,” organiser John O’Shea told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are blessed with the weather every year and new participants are more than welcome. Buses will leave The Gleneagle car park at 10am. Your participation really makes all the difference. All proceeds are in aid of the South Kerry branch of MS Ireland.” If you would like to take part, sponsorship cards are available from John O’Shea, 087-234882; Pat O’Neill, 0646631982; Ray O’Callaghan, 087-2917262; or Linda Pigott, 087-9224655.

Councillor John Sheahan said: “This is very welcome news as the road surface at this location has been presenting problems for some time.” Cllr Sheahan added that he is looking forward to seeing the work commence. “It will alleviate the problem motorists are experiencing when driving up the hill, onto the L-3010 Spa-Anablath Road,” he said. Meanwhile, Cllr Sheahan has received confirmation that the continuing resurfacing of the footpath at Countess Road is due to proceed in the coming weeks and that funding has been secured to carry out essential repairs on the dangerous lag at Ross Road. WHITE-TAILED EAGLE CHICKS FLY THE NEST IN THREE COUNTIES WHITE-TAILED EAGLE chicks have fledged from nests in three counties in 2016. A total of six chicks fledged at five nests in counties Kerry, Cork and Galway making 2016 the most successful year to date for the reintroduction of this iconic but once extinct eagle. In total eight pairs nested and laid eggs in 2016 with five of these pairs rearing chicks. To date 13 white-tailed eagle chicks have fledged from nests in the wild in Ireland since the first successful nesting on Lough Derg near Mountshannon, Co Clare, in 2013. Nesting in the wild is the next critical stage in the high profile reintroduction programme, which began in 2007 with the release of 100 young Norwegian eagles in Killarney National Park, Co Kerry. The white-tailed eagle reintroduction programme is managed by the Golden Eagle Trust in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Re-

gional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs. Over the coming years, it is hoped that the small breeding population will increase to fledge 10 chicks or more annually. “It’s fantastic to see another six Irish-bred white-tailed eagle chicks fly from nests in Ireland this year,” said Dr Allan Mee, project manager for the Golden Eagle Trust. “These young eagles represent the first of what we hope are many more Irish-bred whitetailed eagles to fledge from nests over the next few years to form the basis of a viable self-sustaining Irish population. The signs are good that

we can achieve this with eight or more pairs likely to breed annually over the next few years. While there is still a lot of hard work to be done to achieve this goal we should savour this day as a really important milestone in the recovery of this iconic species. "Eagles are now nesting again in some of our most iconic scenic and cultural landscapes such as near Holy Island (Inis Cealtra) on Lough Derg, the Killarney lakes, Glengarriff and on the western tip of the Iveragh peninsula in Kerry, where they would have nested in historical times.”

EAMONN FITZMAURICE has been reappointed as Kerry senior football team manager for a further two years. The Finuge man was first appointed to take charge of the team for the 2013 season and following defeat by Dublin in last year’s All-Ireland he committed to stay on for a further year. Following his reappointment at Monday’s Kerry County Committee meeting, he will take the helm for a fifth year in 2017 having led Kerry to four successive Munster titles and an All-Ireland title in 2014.

Tributes paid to Michael (Mick) O’Sullivan MANY heartfelt tributes have been paid this week to Michael (Mick) O’Sullivan of Loreto Road, Killarney, who died on Tuesday. Mr O’Sullivan, a native of Glengarriff, Co Cork, was a detective with An Garda Siochána in Killarney for many years. He is survived by his wife, Breda, and their children Pádraig, Micheál, Ciara, Colm and Aoife, his daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, brother Dan, sisters Margaret, Kay and Hannah, brothers-in-law, sistersin-law, many other relatives and friends and his former colleagues in An Garda Siochána. Queues formed from early in the evening as friends and former colleagues gathered to pay their respects at O’Shea’s Funeral Home on Wednesday. Tributes were paid to Mr O’Sullivan at the funeral Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday morning which was followed by burial in Aghadoe Cemetery.

Epic adventure for elite runners By Valerie O’Sullivan THE annual Kerry Way Ultra Marathon non-stop endurance race departed from Randles Garage, Killarney, at dawn on Friday morning. Race director Eileen Daly saw off the 52 elite runners who competed in the gruelling 200km event and raced solidly for 40 hours! A blistering 26 hours and 53 minutes after starting, Barry Drennan, from Dublin, was the first runner home, followed in second place by another amazing athlete, Killarney’s own Donnacha Cassidy, in a time of 29:28:33. Their epic journey of the Kerry Way, which was closely tracked online in a process manned by Sarah Clinton, saw over 75,000 people from across the globe watch the racers’ progress, as they continued along the Killarney National Park, Black Valley onto the mountains of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, bogs, ancient trails, the Iveragh Peninsula, along the Wild Atlantic Way, through, Mountain Stage, Dromid, Waterville, Caherdaniel, Sneem and Blackwater, Templenoe, Kenmare, onto the Old Kenmare Road, before arriving home to Killarney Brewery, the official finishing line. Conditions for the race were at times testing as the amount of rainfall made the terrain difficult. This year also saw a new 55km race added called the Kerry Way Ultra Lite Marathon. It departed Sneem on Saturday morning and followed the Kerry Way, through Templenoe and Kenmare town, before joining the ancient ‘old road to Kenmare’ track back to Killarney National Park. Robert McEvoy was the overall winner of that event in a time of 6:09:28, followed by Conor Kelly in a time of 6:12:48. The first lady home was Claire Morrissey, 7:25:58, followed by Lisa Staplebroek, Templenoe, 7:48:00

Welcome for Áras Phádraig update I WELCOME the decision of Kerry County Council to seek to appoint a consultant who will have overall responsibility for the development of Áras Phádraig as a centre that will be available to facilitate the public in various ways. It is intended to have the appointment made before the end of this month and that the feasibility study and business plan will be completed

Nurses encouraged to return to nursing practice NEARLY 14,000 nurses classified as ‘inactive’ are being encouraged to return to the workforce to provide nursing care to the elderly. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), in conjunction with Nursing Homes Ireland, is writing to 13,774 nurses who are categorised as ‘inactive’ on the NMBI’s register. The quality of patient care across our health system is hugely dependent on an adequate workforce of nurses. The aim of this initiative is to encourage some of the many thousands of nurses whose names are on the inactive file of the register to consider reactivating their registration and returning to practice in Ireland. Currently there are significant employment opportunities throughout the country, both on a full-time and part-time basis, that offer nursing staff the prospect of advancing their education further and developing new skills. We are happy to

partner with NHI on this initiative and to urge nurses currently out of practice to consider returning and bringing their specialist skills to bear within communities and care facilities in need of nursing care and expertise. A bursary to the value of €1,500 is available to nurses wishing to complete HSErun return to nursing practice courses. The communication being issued to the 13,000+ inactive nurses informs them of the bursary available and how they can reactivate their registration. It also informs them of NHI’s dedicated recruitment website, www.careersinnursinghomes.ie, and A Career in Nursing Homes, the organisation’s booklet that provides information and advice to nurses considering careers in nursing homes. Maximise supertrawler inspections after dolphin deaths I AM calling for regular onboard inspections of supertrawlers fishing off the Irish coast to ensure that they are fully compliant with the EU Common Fisheries Policy, following a reported rise in dolphin deaths. I am also asking the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) to review and maximise its inspections when trawlers are operating off the Irish coast. In July 2016, in separate cases, three dead dolphins were found on the south-west coast of Ireland in the space of one week, one with a rope around its tail. These findings follow reports of a rise in the number of dead dolphins on Ireland’s west coast since the beginning of 2016. It is reported that large su-

pertrawlers are currently operating around 30km off the coast of Co Kerry. While the link between supertrawler activity and the increase in these dolphin deaths is not proven, the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) stresses that caution must be taken as regards the impact of human activity on all components of the ecosystem. I received a response to my official question to the European Commission on the matter and I welcome that the Commission is monitoring the situation. Seán Kelly MEP (Ireland South), Killarney

weddings

Prescription for a memorable day out CONSIDERING they first met at O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy, Killarney, it is not surprising that Rebecca O’Sullivan and Robbie O’Connell made sure to stop by the New Street business after they exchanged wedding vows. Rebecca, from Glenlough, Kilgarvan, and Robbie, from Carrigaline, Cork, were married in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, and held their reception in the Europe Hotel & Resort, Fossa. It was a case of love at first sight when the couple’s paths first crossed. “Robbie came into the shop on February 17, 2010, with his friend Donald Dwyer,” said the bride. “I work with Donald’s mum Nuala Dwyer who is a pharmacist in O’Sullivan’s. Rob and Donald, who are both teachers, were on their midterm break and had popped in to say hello to Nuala.” The rest is history. On their wedding day, Rebecca and Robbie were delighted to pose for a picture with O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy owner Anthony O’Sullivan in a photo-shoot led by Denis Hyland. “We are now living in Douglas, Cork,” said Rebecca. “I commute to Killarney every day to work and Robbie is a primary school teacher in St Columba’s Boys National School in Douglas.” The newlyweds returned on Tuesday from their honeymoon in Majorca.

Kara and Conor say ‘I do’ BY EVE KELLIHER

T

NEY were a real landmark attraction when bales of hay decked out to look like a bride and groom were on show outside the Killarney Oaks Hotel recently. They were organised by bride Kara O’Shea when she wanted to surprise her bridegroom Conor McDonagh when he arrived at their reception venue. “He is a farmer so I wanted to incorporate farming in the wedding,” said Kara. “In addition, Kerry Tractors also drove a brand-new Massey Ferguson tractor to the venue decorated in bunting with ‘just married’ on it.” Kara, who is general manager of Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty Group, is originally from Waterville and was based in Lissivigeen, Killarney, for 11 years, and Conor, an engineer for Brian Scully Services, Newcastle West, is from Ballyagran, Co Limerick. They were wed in St Mary’s Cathedral in a ceremony led by Father Niall Howard and Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae announced the newlyweds and their wedding party into the reception at the Killarney Oaks. Torc Dancers performed after the meal and the Sean Taaffe Glam Crew surprised the guests with hair and makeup touch-

ups at the reception. “I was very close to my granddad Tom Moriarty and August 6 was his birthday so we chose that day for our wedding and dedicated the Mass to him and toasted him during the speeches,” said Kara. The bride’s sister Michelle O’Shea was maid of honour with her friends Marion Keating, Shirley Mahony and Deirdre Clifford as bridesmaids. The groom’s brother Brian McDonagh was best man while Barry O’Kelly, Mike McDonagh and Ed Quilty were groomsmen. Kara’s nieces Cliona and Alanna Walsh were the flower girls. The bride and groom first met six years ago in Killarney and got engaged on December 27, 2015, when Con proposed at the top of Barber Castle on Ballinskelligs beach. Kara looked stunning in a wedding dress she designed herself and which was made by Orlaith Carroll of The Attic Bridalwear Boutique in Limerick. The newlyweds will jet off on honeymoon in November, to Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Dubai. They reside in in Ballingarry, Co Limerick. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

CHILDREN’S VISION: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW Recent studies have shown a link between visual ability in young children and their reading and writing levels. According to the studies conducted in the UK, Children with lower ‘visual acuity’ show significantly reduced literacy development even when other factors – such as cognitive skills and background – are taken into account. Many things can be affected by poor vision, including behaviour and social development, but not all children will not know that they have a vision problem. With few reference points, they may believe the way they see is perfectly normal. For parents, there are some signs, but the symptoms are not always apparent, which is why an eye exam is so important. It is particularly important to detect and correct problems during early childhood, to ensure that vision develops normally, as they can be more difficult to correct once the child reaches the age of 8 or 9. Parents are often shocked to realise their child has been struggling with schoolwork due to a visual problem that can often be corrected very easily.

Killarney judges on the lookout for sharply dressed men in Listowel

Ita Lyne and Fiona O’Connor from Killarney.

TWO fashion-savvy ladies from Killarney will be keeping an eye out for sharply garbed punters at Listowel Races next week as Fiona O’Connor and Ita Lyne will judge the East River’s best-dressed man competition at the event, on Thursday, September 15. Fiona and Ita both featured very prominently in the successful RTÉ television series The Gleneagle. Fiona is the entertainment manager at the hotel, while Ita is its accommodation manager. "We're delighted to be the sponsor of such an exciting event,” said Pat Lyons of East River, Men’s, Ladies and Home Interior Store, in Listowel. “The girls were judges for last year’s very successful competition. Midway through the selection process, both commented that they were having a ball, and the best day ever. Ita then asked about the possibility of being judges again in 2016.” The duo have been tasked with finding the most sharply dressed man on the course on September 15. “This year's competition should be

Anti-wrinkle injections and fillers

Do you want to look more youthful? Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio offers an insight into treatments available

IF YOU want to look younger, then you should make an appointment for consultation with our clinical director at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio to discuss anti-wrinkle injections. This treatment takes less than ten minutes, and the results are seen within three days, with maximum results achieved after fourteen days. Wrinkles cannot be treated on the skins surface, because wrinkles result from the over use of facial muscles, and so these muscles need to be treated with Anti Wrinkle Injections to eliminate and reduce facial lines. This treatment takes less than ten minutes, and is not painful. subhead Why choose anti-wrinkle injections? We have been carrying out these

treatments for the past six years and have a wealth of experience to ensure that we get beautiful aesthetic results every time, for every patient.

Our ‘less is more’ natural approach is enjoyed by many of our clients who want a natural wrinkle-free look. Our highly qualified facial aesthetic doctors have undergone very specific specialised additional training and as such we can offer you one of the most experienced in this country to ensure you get a beautiful aesthetic result while ensuring maximum results. • If you would like more information, call Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966

interesting,” added Pat. “Fiona and Ita will have to select approximately 50 sharply dressed men from a packed racing course, then select three finalists and mutually agree on the ultimate winner.” So what’s a stylish racegoer got to do in order to be in with a chance of catching the eye of the judges? “Sharply dressed men are what the judges will be looking for so think in terms of suit and jackets, classic or casual, and ties or bow ties are mandatory,” added Pat. The best-dressed man competition has been permanently changed to the Thursday of the races as well, giving two days of back-to-back fashion. East River has sponsored the competition to the tune of €1,000; the winner will receive €750, runner-up €150, and third placed €100. Grace Notes Why there’s beauty in imperfection

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on how we can waste time striving to be perfect

TO QUOTE Baz Luhrmann in Sunscreen: “The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.” It is only very recently that I have realised one very important thing. I have realised that there is immense beauty in imperfection. I have spent most of my young life trying to be the perfect version of myself, striving and striving to be someone that I have dreamt up. Of course it is important that people aim to improve and that we try to better ourselves but we also have to try to accept ourselves

the way we are right now, in this moment. My musical journey has not been an easy one. I have come across people who have hurt me. I have experienced great doubt about my career choice. Nearly two years ago I made the decision to sing again after a few years break but was heartbroken when I found out that I needed to go on voice rest for a while, due to a combination of factors. Just before I took this rest I recorded a song for my mother. It was a song that meant a great deal to me and my

family and I hadn't sung it in years. I struggled a little to record the song but when I listened back to it with my parents I realised that it was the most honest singing I had ever done. It wasn't perfect, it had weak points, it certainly wasn't my best vocal, but it came from deep inside my heart and soul. Now that the recording of my album has almost reached its conclusion I have learned that it is so important to accept yourself as you are now. Now is beautiful. Don't wait for later because you will battle with the “future you” forever and it will get you absolutely nowhere. Stop battling, start doing!

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 15:1-32: There are three figures in the story of the Prodigal Son. The father is a symbol of an unconditional love. Perhaps you can recall someone showing love to you in a way that showed great forgiveness and acceptance. Have there been times when you have also loved in this way? You may be able to identify with the younger son at different stages of his journey. Be sure to follow it to the point where it becomes a good news story for you – when you ‘came to yourself’. Where and when have you experienced a homecoming after a time of exile and alienation. Do not neglect the older son. In contrast to his father, he was very judgemental towards his younger brother. Perhaps you have experienced these attitudes in others towards you, or in yourself towards others. What were they like for you? Where was there life for you, or for others? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

MISFITS WELCOME!

JESUS is being judged, by the authorities, to be mixing with the wrong sort of people – tax collectors, people who have made mistakes or indeed happen to be poor. Jesus welcomes the outsiders, the people who don’t fit in, and shares a meal with them – the best way to build a relationship. Jesus explains that God’s love is limitless. He uses the Prodigal Son image, the shepherd searching for his lost sheep and the woman carefully looking through her house in search of a lost coin to demonstrate how eagerly God wants to seek us out and welcome us. At times we can feel like the misfit – recognising that we may have had a period of ignoring or avoiding God, trying to live on our own strength. It takes courage to trust in the love of God, who like the father in the gospel is always unreservedly and lovingly looking for us to come home. Essentially, Jesus’ message is of radical welcome; not just to those who it is easy to welcome but all. We are called to imitate. Siobhain Tighe

THE LOST PARABLES

THE three parables of things lost and found emphasise the unending forgiveness of God and God’s rejoicing for those who return. In each of the situations there is a frantic search for that which is lost and a huge celebration when the lost is found. In the third parable of the Prodigal Son there is much to reflect on. We hear that the younger brother eventually “came to his senses”. We might pray today that God shows us the aspects of our lives in which we also need to “come to our senses”. As with all parables, we are left thinking and wondering, disturbed even. A sheep and a coin we can rejoice over, but when it is a person who has done us harm, hurt us in some way, it is a much deeper and more painful process. The elder brother in the third parable feels hard done by, is deeply hurt, full of anger and resentment. Luke, being the excellent storyteller that he is, does not tell us the outcome of the story; it is for us to finish for ourselves. The elder brother has two options: he can walk away full of resentment or he can try to let go of the anger he feels towards his brother. The latter is a more difficult path but it is the only one that leads to life, no matter how painful the journey may be. The father stands there pleading for the elder brother to come in. “Forgiveness isn’t about releasing someone from accountability for his actions. It is about us letting go of our anger and resentment.” Jane Mellett

The Provocateur Nightmare junctions in Killarney WOULDN’T it be a good idea to commission an alternative map for Killarney? I’m thinking in parallel universe terms…a map that gives drivers and pedestrians (particularly those not familiar with our roads) the option of using safer (if perhaps longer-in-termsof-distance) routes. Many local drivers will tell you how they take great pains to avoid the dreaded right-turn from Lewis Road onto the bypass road. It is one of the most ridiculous, nerve-jangling junctions in town. Not only do you face a wait – usually with an impatient tailback behind you – the dart onto the bypass is just so dangerous. Most of us will agree that the best solution here is to choose the turn-left option and swing back onto the bypass after whirling round the Cleeny Roundabout – although that itself can be a bit of a nightmare to get on to. Still, I’m thinking in terms of the lesser of two evils and all that. As for the High Street junction, that offers plenty of cause for concern among pedestrians and motorists alike. Sometimes standing there waiting to cross you can feel as though you are loitering! You are literally hanging about for what seems like an absolute eternity, with motorists and pedestrians alike trying not to accidentally eyeball each other, purely for want of somewhere to look as they while away the time. Maybe someone could stand there and juggle or provide some other sort entertainment while we wait? And apart from actually feeling yourself grow old while waiting for the green light, it can be a pretty hairy experience for pedestrians when they do get a chance to cross. That’s if they’re fortunate enough to be in a position to do so briskly. Just last week there was nearly a collision as a young lady ran across in front of traffic, but even though I was a driver on that occasion, I understood, as pedestrians really only get the most fleeting of moments to put their heads down and hurtle across. The most wily solution (again one for that alternative map) would seem to be to walk for a bit longer and cross using the pedestrian crossings around New Road and near Killarney Library. A Weekly Round-Up Of News +

Making suds Mark Twain once wrote that soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run. He may have had a point. The American FDA has banned more than a dozen chemicals commonly used in antibacterial soaps The US government has said old-fashioned soap and water is more effective than antibacterial products. Last week, the federal authorities banned 19 chemicals long-used in antibacterial soaps, saying manufacturers failed to show they are safe and kill germs. “We have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water,” Dr Janet Woodcock, of the Food and Drug Administration’s drug centre, said in a statement. The Associated Press said that the decision primarily targets two once-ubiquitous ingredients - triclosan and triclocarban - that some limited

animal research suggests can interfere with hormone levels and spur drug-resistant bacteria. The chemicals have long been under scrutiny, and a cleaning industry spokesman said most companies have already removed the now banned 19 chemicals from their soaps and washes. The FDA said it will allow companies more time to provide data on three other chemicals, which are still in a majority of products sold today. “Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs,” Ms Woodcock said. “In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.” The American Cleaning Institute, a cleaning chemical association, disputed the FDA's findings, saying in a statement: “The FDA already has in its hands data that shows the safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps.”

‘Our angel Isabella was sent here for a reason’ A KILLORGLIN mother whose newborn daughter died from a rare congenital heart defect which went undetected during pregnancy encourages expectant mums to ask for detailed scans. Following the heartbreaking death of her sixday-old daughter Isabella, Jazmine Sands has launched this campaign in Isabella’s memory. Every pregnant woman should be entitled to a detailed scan, according to Jazmine. “My mission is to create awareness for congenital heart disease (CHD) and promoting better screening for all ladies who are pregnant. We want to help any other parent whose child has CHD or who is walking the same path as ourselves of loosing a child. Our angel Isabella was sent here for a reason and I believe her story will do just that,” said Jazmine. Isabella was born by emergency C-section in University Hospital Kerry on May 23. She was rushed to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin where she died in Jazmine’s arms on May 28. Jazmine and her partner Kevin Sheehan learned their daughter had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which affects normal blood flow through the heart, and other heart complications.

Her parents say they will always cherish photographs, arranged by the hospital, which were taken in the moments after she died. Jazmine began blogging about her experience this week and said her ultimate goal is to encourage expectant mothers to ask for detailed scans during pregnancy, so that possible heart defects can be identified. “Preparation would have helped us cope with the fact that we wouldn’t be bringing her home the way we did, and would have helped us explain everything to Isabella’s brother, Keelin,” she said. “In our case, nothing could have been done to save Isabella, but if detailed scans are done, and defects are identified, then maybe something can be done for others.” Jazmine paid tribute to the group Glow Hearts 4 Crumlin, which helps parents of children who have undergone open-heart surgery, and which strives to raise awareness of congenital heart defects. Jazmine’s blog is at http://isabella-chdawareness. blogspot.ie/

Views From Kerry And Around The World Brexit problems Things are hotting up for Britain with warnings and threats coming, not just from the EU, but from both sides of the Pacific as well. If Britain hasn’t prepared properly for Brexit they may well be caught between a rock & a hard place. Having turned its back on Europe, it may find it difficult to forge new alliances. It is expected that the EU will not enter any deal with the UK which would allow them to cherry-pick, to take the bits they like about Europe & leave the nasty stuff. Britain will find life is not just a bowl of cherries. Brexit will not be on Britain’s terms. The Japanese government has voiced its opinion on Brexit & how European economies will be thrown into “great turmoil” if the UK and EU cannot agree on a deal that includes an element of free movement of labour. Issued on the eve of the G20 summit in China, a document entitled “Japan’s Message to the UK and EU” warns of dire consequences for “the interests of the world” if an open Europe cannot be maintained. For the first time a coherent list of the demands Japanese businesses are making for the conditions of Brexit are laid out. And it comes with a clear warning that if those demands are not met, major companies such as Hitachi, Fujitsu and Nissan could move their European headquarters elsewhere - with serious implications for the 140,000 people employed by Japanese businesses in the UK. Among the demands are: • Maintenance of trade in goods with no burdens of customs duties and procedures • Unfettered investment • Maintenance of an environment in which services and financial transactions across Europe can be provided and carried out smoothly • Access to workforces with the necessary skills • Harmonised regulations and standards between the UK and the EU The Japanese also present a key recommendation to the UK and EU - the idea of an “extendable transitional period” that would help to avoid any “unpleasant surprises” after the two years of negotiations are over and Brexit finally takes place. Japan is not the only country using the G20 summit as an opportunity to weigh in on Brexit. Speaking alongside Theresa May in China, the US President said his much-derided warning ahead of the EU referendum, that Britain would be at "the back of the queue" for a deal if it voted to leave, still stood. And he said both sides would have to work hard to prevent longstanding, positive trade relations between the US and UK from "unravelling" after Brexit. Britain is also at the 'back of the queue' for a trade deal with Australia after Mr. Ciobo, the country's minister in charge of striking them said a UK agreement could be almost three years away and would come after an EU pact. The minister indicated that real detailed progress on an actual agreement could not

begin until Brexit was completed. Asked whether an EU deal would take precedence he said "it will" because early discussions with the European Union have begun and are more advanced than they are than with the UK. A scoping study for the EU talks is due to report back in the New Year, with formal talks on an Australia/EU deal expected to start in the first half of 2017. In its letter, the Japanese government warned that “a number of Japanese businesses, invited by the Government in some cases, have invested actively [in] the UK, which was seen to be a gateway to Europe,” adding that some have bases in the UK specifically “to oversee their activities in the EU”. “Japanese businesses with their European headquarters in the UK may decide to transfer their head-office function to Continental Europe if EU laws cease to be applicable in the UK after its withdrawal,” it warns. The Japanese government says manufacturers, “especially of automobiles”, have raised concerns that they will be hit by a new wave of trade tariffs, in some cases a double whammy. “[Car manufacturers] could have such levies imposed twice, once for auto parts imported from the EU and again for the final products assembled in the UK to be exported to the EU,” it says. Businesses also fear the inevitable transfer of London-based EU agencies, such as the European Medicines Agency, which has up-to-now made it advantageous for major international pharmaceutical companies to be based in the UK. And there are concerns Japanese research and development projects based in the UK will lose access to EU science funding, “which could possibly lead to a shift in the flow of R&D funds and personnel to Continental Europe”. “This could force Japanese companies to reconsider their business activities,” it says. Japan, the world’s third-largest economy, has a vested interest in Brexit being conducted smoothly - and not just for the sake of its businesses operating over the UK. The collapse in the value of the pound after June’s referendum result saw investors’ cash flowing into the Yen instead. That might seem like good news for Japan - but with its own economy already faltering, the increased value of its currency has made it harder for the Bank of Japan to control inflation, as imported goods become cheaper. The letter ends with a final note, addressed just to the rest of the EU once Brexit has taken place. In effect, it asks Brussels to do all it can to welcome Japanese businesses in the event of a mass exodus from Britain. Go easy on licensing procedures and “avoid the creation of extra burdens”, it requests, “In case there is a need to establish a new base in the EU.”

Golfers tee off in memory of Seani LAST Saturday saw family and friends of popular Killarney man Seani McCarthy host a golf classic in his memory. Memories were shared at the event at Mahony’s Point, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, and also at a special walk dedicated to Seani. The Killarney man passed away after a short illness, borne bravely, in September of 2015. Seani was a keen golfer and member of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and his friends and his wife Margaret organised the golf classic and walk in a bid to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “In doing so, we decided that it would be a fitting remembrance to hold the golf classic in memory of Seani and contribute to the great work of this Kerry charity,” said Seani’s friend Brian Moriarty. Margaret McCarthy presented the prizes at the Seani McCarthy Memorial Golf Classic prizegiving in Scotts Hotel on Saturday night.

Standing ovations for dedicated Gleneagle Hotel staff STAFF at The Gleneagle gathered together recently for a special length of service ceremony which paid tribute to the outstanding team at the hotel, many of whom have dedicated decades of their careers to working there. The stars of the ceremony, Niall Doherty and Christy O’Sullivan, received standing ovations from their colleagues in recognition of their hard work and dedication having worked at the hotel over 45 years and 40 years respectively. Speaking after the event Eileen O’Donoghue, director of The Gleneagle Hotel, said: “It is difficult to describe the level of emotion and pride there was in the room at this very special ceremony. When you are acknowledging staggering levels of service, from five years which is something remarkable in today’s hospitality world, all the way up to 40 years for Christy and 45 years for Niall, it is very hard to find the right words to even attempt to show the regard and esteem you feel for these very special people. Simply put, we are just humbled and grateful.” The Gleneagle Group currently employs over 700 people and 400 of those are based at The Gleneagle Hotel. In excess of 130 people, from this 400 strong team, have been with the hotel for between five and fifteen years. Staff members Norma Lynch, Patrick Sheehan, Muiris O’Connor, Noreen Moynihan, Terence McCarthy, Liam Kelleher, Ann McCann, John Drummond, Breffni Ingerton and Derek Lee have worked at The Gleneagle for over twenty years, while Dorothy Daly, Tom Moriarty and Eamonn Quigley have worked at The Gleneagle for over twenty-five years. Mossie Gleeson, Geraldine Tangney and Eileen Doherty have worked at the hotel for over thirty years and Bridget Herlihy, Maura O’Connor and Dan O’Sullivan have all worked there for over thirty-five years. General Manager John Dolan said: “It’s great to be a part of a team that has dedicated so many years of service, through the good times and hard times. Kudos to Niall Doherty at forty-five years, Christy O’Sullivan at 40 years and at 35 years’ service – Dan O’Sullivan, Maura O’Connor and Bridget Herlihy, all of whom are still enjoying life on our cruise ship on land. I myself am a relative newcomer and having only enjoyed ten years working with this dedicated and professional team.”

IT HAS been confirmed that Irish Water is progressing the necessary studies as part of the preparation of a planning application for the Kilcummin sewerage scheme. The proposed project will involve the construction of approximately 8.5 kilometres of new foul sewers and a pumping station. The proposed new sewer network will be connected to the existing Killarney town sewer system and wastewater treatment plant. This project will ensure that wastewater from Kilcummin is treated and discharged in compliance with the appropriate national and European standards. It is expected that the planning application will be lodged before the end of this year. Once submitted, the planning application may be inspected at the offices of the planning authority (Kerry County Council) and accessed online at www.kerrycoco.ie Irish Water will continue to provide updates on this project in 2016 and will continue to liaise with all relevant stakeholders throughout this period. “I am delighted for the people of Kilcummin that finally Irish Water have decided to bring the Kilcummin sewerage scheme to Killarney,” Killarney Municipal District Mayor Councillor Brendan Cronin told Killarney Advertiser. “It is absolutely mighty news. I and my fellow councillors have been lobbying for this for 10 or 12 years now.” Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae and Councillor Maura Healy-Rae welcomed the development on behalf of the people of Kilcummin also. “It is expected that the planning application will be lodged by end 2016 and we hope there will be no further delays or complications,” they stated. KILLARNEY yoga teacher Aileen Slein has joined forces with the people of the town to help refugees in Calais. Aileen contacted a number of businesses in the area to support volunteers helping men, women and children in need. “A friend of mine, Amanda Whelan, is a volunteer at the Calais Kitchen,” said Aileen. “This is totally run by volunteers who put together individual boxes of food and firewood and then distribute it to the refugees. This allows them to cook their own meals and maintain some semblance of normality in an extreme environment.” Calais Kitchen recently put out a call seeking spice bags, to include garlic, vegetable cubes, turmeric, salt and chilli, and in the last fortnight Aileen undertook to organise 500 bags. “I contacted Horan's Healthstore and Independent Irish Health Foods and they donated all of the spices. O’Shea’s provided all the garlic, Mary Murphy designed a beautiful card, Killarney Advertiser/KC Print printed them, The Brehon provided a room and biscuits for packing, friends packed them and Miah Lynch shipped them to Calais,” said Aileen. “It was amazing how everyone was so generous and so happy to help.”

Renault considers killing off diesel engines RENAULT may stop offering diesel engines in most of its cars sold in Europe. The move is a reaction to the cost of ensuring that diesel engines comply with tighter emissions regulations. The crackdown follows last year's diesel emissions scandal involving German carmaker Volkswagen. Senior Renault executive Thierry Bollore has said that tougher emissions standards and testing methods would make diesel engines uneconomic to make. He told a meeting of Renault bosses in July that diesel engines had already been removed from the company's smallest cars, such as the Twingo, even before the Volkswagen scandal. By 2020, when more stringent EU emissions standards come into force, larger Renault cars such as the Clio and the Megane are unlikely to have diesel engine variants. More than 60% of the 1.6 million cars Renault sold in Europe last year were diesels. Volkswagen's chief executive, Matthias Mueller, said in June that his company was now wondering "whether it still makes sense to invest a lot of money in further developing diesel". From 2019, tougher European rules on diesel engines will involve measuring emissions in real-world driving conditions, making the new standards much harder to comply with. For its part, Renault is being investigated by the French authorities for publishing suspected fraudulent emissions figures as the fallout from the Volkswagen scandal continues. DieselGate is going to roll on for some time.

FLAT-PACK TRUCK THE OX is billed as "the world's first flat-pack van" – a two-wheel drive, off-roader made of marine plywood that can be assembled by non-experts in under 12 hours and travel 1,000km without filling up. It isn't quite as fast as Gordon Murray's previous creation, the McLaren F1 supercar, but he hopes it will reach more people – thousands rather than a hundred or so. If you want to bring cars to a developing nation, there are two very expensive roadblocks in the way. First, shipping whole cars is expensive, and second, setting up a manufacturing facility is an exercise in spending way too much money. The Global Vehicle Trust OX helps to solve this, using a technique that's already saving you money when it comes to home furnishings. The truck can be packed up in about six hours, and six of these flat packs can fit into a single 40-foot container. Once it arrives in the developing world, a team of three can assemble the truck in as little as 12 hours. Not only is it cheap and easy to ship around the world, it's still quite capable. Despite being shorter than a large SUV, it can carry nearly 4,000 pounds. It only has two-wheel drive, but GVT promises performance equal to other 4WD vehicles. Power comes from a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. This is the kind of vehicle design that's flat-out impressive. In an era filled with all sorts of technically complicated, million-euro hypercars, there's still a strong need for vehicles in developing countries, where roads and access to manufacturing facilities aren't common.

prayer to ST. joseph O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. E.

In loving memory of Kieran O’Sullivan who died on the 9th of September 2005 and Denis O’Sullivan who died on the 4th of September 2006, late of Brighton and Croydon, U.K. Silent memories keep you near, As time unfolds another year, Out of our lives you may be gone, But in our hearts you still live on. Killarney Valley AC Killarney Rugby It’s that time of year again when we are all booking our kids into clubs and Club lessons and trying to organise ourselves. It’s the same for our volunteer coaches and helpers as they juggle training other people’s children with their own busy lives. This year, for various reasons, we need extra help to coach the young athletes that join the club. The club has increased in size which is fantastic but unless we get some help we won’t be able to run the training nights. If you think you can help please email killarneyvalleyac@ gmail.com Please like our facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/KillarneyValleyAC/ for updates. Please remember that all the people running the club do so on a voluntary basis. Congratulations to senior club member Martin Crowley who finished 4th in the Dingle Half Marathon last weekend proudly wearing the KVAC colours! We are all very excited about our next big fundraising event for the Killarney MicroTrack Project which is the Killarney10Mile on September 24th – entries on www.killarney10mile.com Remember: Athletes must wear the club singlet when representing their club. These are available from Brid Stack 087-2650720. If you have any news or photos you would like to include in the notes please email killarneyvalleyac@gmail. com

Senior News Our Senior mens are now into their 21st year and will enter Kerry Area Board

MINIS: Our minis returned to action after the summer break last Saturday at Aghadoe. Thankfully the weather improved early Saturday morning to allow for a great first session with lots of children coming along to training. Coaches put the children through their paces and it was very encouraging to see so many new faces within the coaching setup. We had a very strong turn out for the first day and we had lots of girls taking part in training from the get go. It is so encouraging to see so many kids enjoying rugby, many for the first time. Training continues next Saturday at 10:30am. For any details contact Minis Coordinator Liam Murphy on 0874145662. Youths: Our Youths section also returned to action last week as each age groups prepares for the new season ahead. Our U14’s kicked off their first session of the season on Saturday morning, while the U16’s and U18’s restarted training last Wednesday at 6:30pm. All training takes part at Aghadoe and anyone looking for information can contact Paul Murphy on 087-3745351. MOSS KEANE CUP: Final: Tralee RFC 12 - Killarney RFC 0 Congrats to Tralee who won this years Moss Keane Cup, at Home in O’Dowd Park in a cracking competition. The Moss Keane Cup is a competition for all of the Kerry Rugby clubs, where teams of 10 a side compete to win the trophy named after arguably Kerry’s finest rugby player and Munster legend, Currow native Moss Keane. The first round saw Killarney take on

Iveragh and Killarney win on a scoreline of 28 -14. Then Killarney played Castleisland in a 12 points each draw, which put Killarney into second place on points difference, meaning the final beckoned. However the home side ran out the victors on the day. A good season opener and we are looking forward to the new season, which kicks off in earnest next Sunday when we play Castleisland in the McElligott Cup. Memberships: Memberships are now due for the forthcoming season and can be paid by logging onto our website www.krfc. club and checking out Membership tab. All memberships must be paid up as soon as possible especially as players will not be covered by insurance if they are not paid up.

Volunteers Wanted One thing that Killarney Celtic are badly stuck for this year is help with our teams, especially at underage. We fielded 19 teams last year, plus non-competitive coaching and blitzes for big numbers from U7 to U10, Football for All, and our Soccer Tots Programme, but in order to continue to do that, we need volunteers to help make sure that everyone is playing in a safe and enjoyable environment. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett is delighted to confirm that two of our inter-club competitions which had elapsed some years ago, are about to be re-instated in our Club calendar and they are as follows. The “Downing Cup” will be against our old friends and neighbours, Dooks Golf Club. The second competition is for the “Esso Cup” which is an annual competition against Tralee Golf Club. Captain Liam says that the resurrection of these competitions, which ceased with the birth of the Celtic Tiger, is not so much as to have extra competitions in our competitions calendar, but far more importantly, is to renew old friendships, and rivalries, which had been allowed to elapse. Sunday the 4th of September was the annual exchange day with Dooks Golf Club. The competition was played in very benign conditions, and this was reflected in the number of players who broke standard scratch on the day. The winner Padraig Sweeney had a blistering back nine holes which included three birdies, while the runner up Mike Neeson, with the same score, played a very steady round, only to have been “pipped at the post”so to speak. The results were as follows. 1st Padraig Sweeney (8) 40 points 2nd Mike Neeson (19) 40 points 3rd John O’Shea (12) 39 points 4th Barry O’Leary (10) 39 points Category 1 Greg Lanigan (4) 36 points Category 2 Con Healy (9) 34 points Category 3 Michael Quirke (13) 38 points Category 4 Seamus Doheny (20) 38 points, standard scratch was 36 points.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Sunday last, the annual outing was held in quest of the sea trout in Waterville - gathered in Donnelly’s shed on the wind swept shores of Lough Currane, with news filtering through of a Tipperary Victory in the Hurling and Anglers dripping of the lake spray, the weigh in bore testimony to a tough day on the lake with some successful anglers presenting their catch and viable stories being exchanged by many others of good encounters with some fine fish during the day. The day had offered up conditions from the mirror flatness of the morning right through ample wind to a gusty finale which saw most boats drifting in Donnelly’s Bay in case a silver trout lurked there in the final hour of the competition! The top rods on the day were as follows : 1) Seamus O’Loughlin 2) Paul Lawton 3) Gerry Bambury 4) Liam Buckley Gerry Bambury had the honour of landing the heaviest trout of the day and in his usual animated style, gave great details of the encounter ! This Sunday the angling action is on Lough Lein as the Mar Loughlan competition takes place. This is a pick your partner competition, entry fee €15 and the club fishes in conjunction with a number of other angling clubs. The top four on the day from each club are identified and from their catches, the top three places overall are nominated - the winners being awarded the Mar Loughlan Shield for 2016. Our club winner will be awarded with the Michael Fleming Memorial Trophy on the day. If there are any members still interested in competing, they should make contact with Club Treasurer, Gary Fleming, soonest as Saturday night will see entries close. Looking back on our senior competitions to date this year, we have an interesting battle for angler of the year, with Liam Buckley earning 23 points on the scale thus far, he holds the lead at present, followed by Kenmare’s Gerry Bambury on 19 points just like many a race witnessed at the Olympics this year, the pack are not too far behind these two anglers and with just two outing remaining this year, this Sundays Mar Loughlin and our Annual Outing on Lough Lein on the 2nd of October, there will be some interesting weigh-in’s ahead!

Loch Lein Anglers

The combined clubs of Lough Lein Anglers & Macroom Anglers fished our penultimate competition last Sunday on Caragh Lake. With light winds forecast for the morning, 20 hopeful anglers took to the waters. Many boats headed for the lower part of the lake where the Caragh River begins its short journey to the sea. This proved to be a wise move. As the wind picked up during the day, fishing conditions improved everywhere. Boats on the lower end fared best. Thirty nine trout, over the ten inch limit, were presented to the irrepressible weigh-master Phil Horan at 6.00pm. The winner was Phil Dewey with 8 trout. In second place was Alfie Hughes with six fish. ‘Dinger’ Murphy, 5 trout, finished third. The prize-giving took place after a hearty meal in The Climbers Inn. Our final competition of 2016, ‘The Local’, takes place on September 26th on Lough Lein. Until then, tight lines & safe fishing to all.

Tipp topple the Cats Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews Sunday’s All-Ireland senior and minor semi-finals TIPPERARY turned up with their A game at Croke Park on Sunday last and captured the coveted Liam McCarthy cup defeating Kilkenny, the outgoing champions, with a powerful second-half display. It ends a wonderful unbeaten run for Brian Cody’s charges and this may give some impetus to Mayo for the football final as they take on the Dubs. Kilkenny really missed Fennelly from the pivotal midfield area, but it still looked good for them early in the second half when they got their trademark goal. As they have done so often in the past Kilkenny are most dangerous by scoring goals in the first quarter after half-time, but they were unable to kick on yesterday even with the cushion of that goal. Tipp were not going to be denied and man of the match Seamus Callanan along with Bubbles O’Dwyer and John McGrath scored so freely that Kilkenny were well beaten before the end. It is easy to surmise that this is the end of the road for Kilkenny, but they are so resilient that Tipperary know that when it comes to defence of their title next year Kilkenny will be there. Will Brian Cody be there on the sideline? The most successful hurling manager of all time has no intention of retiring. The Tipperary minors defeated Limerick to capture their All-Ireland title and to link with the past the winning Tipperary team of 1991 were honoured as well. KERRY GAA FIXTURES

No date has been set for the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor Football Championship Final between East Kerry and Mid Kerry. These two sides had contrasting semi-final victories in recent games. At Austin Stack Park, Dara Moynihan, Man of the Match Shane O’Sullivan and David Spillane were in fine scoring form. St Brendan’s had no answer to the powerful running and score taking of Seamus Moynihan’s East Kerry side who led by 10 points to 1 at the break. The winners went on to lead by 15 points to 3 at the three-quarter stage with St Brendan’s keeper Brien Regan keeping his net intact with some fine saves. Brendan’s did get in for two goals in the final minutes from Michael Walsh and Bobby Regan but East Kerry ran out comfortable winners on a 0-21 to 2-4 scoreline. In Fitzgerald Stadium, Mid Kerry did not have it all their own way against surprise semi-finalists Firies. The sides traded points throughout the first half but Mid Kerry finished the half stronger with two goals within minutes of each other from Jamie

Mid Kerry who won the Semi Final of the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor County Football Championship.

Clifford and Caolim Teahan to lead by 2-9 to 0-6 at the break. Despite three Donnchadh O’Sullivan pointed frees for Firies, the winners still led by 2-11 to 10 points midway through the second half and made their passage to the final secure when Fiachra Clifford got their third goal to leave the final score 3-13 to 10 points in favour of the divisional side. Ciaran Kennedy of Mid Kerry was named as the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin man of the match.

Dr Crokes

County League Round 11 Dr Crokes 1-20 Milltown Castlemaine 0-9 We started off this game on the front foot and sent over six points without reply in the first 15 minutes. The locals came more into the game in the second quarter but despite plenty of possession managed to score just one point in this period. While our management would be happy with our all round performance, they know they still have things to work on before the championship. Under 14 Girls The girls returned to competitive action this week after a short summer recess. Two away games in the East Kerry League produced contrasting performances, but similar results. Wednesday 31/8/16 saw us visit Kilcummin where a below par performance after the summer lay off did not affect the result, but ensured the outcome was in doubt until the final whistle. On Sunday 4/9/16 we hit the road again, this time to Kenmare, where a much better all round performance was required to edge a competitive fixture, in wet conditions, against

Inbhear Sceine Gaels. We have one more round robin fixture at home against Glenflesk this coming weekend to determine where we finish in the league. Under 12 Dr Crokes under 12 Black and Amber team commenced their East Kerry League campaign on Sunday evening. The Black team played their best football all year were just edged out 3-15 to 1-16 in the end in a high quality end-to-end game. The Amber team were just edged out in a keenly fought game. All the boys in each group got game time and most importantly continued to improve. Academy The Saturday morning Academy for boys and girls aged 4-10 years has returned. Hurling 10-10.40 and Football 10.40-12. Come along and enjoy learning to play Gaelic Games in a fun environment. Lotto Lotto results from Sunday 4th of September - 12, 16, 20, 23. Jackpot €8100. Not won. Next draw Sunday 11th of September in JC O’Shea. Jackpot €8400.

Fossa

Lotto 4th September 2016. Numbers drawn were 10, 14, 17, 26. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €9,900. Tickets are on sale at The Golden Nugget Bar, The Castlerosse Leisure Centre, The Travel Inn, The Old Killarney Inn, Foley’s Spar Shop, The Laurels Bar and Committee members. Seniors The senior team lost their 100% record when they were beaten by Na Gael in the final round of the County League in Tralee on Sunday. Missing a number of our regular players, this was always going to be a tough assignment and so it turned out to be, however it also means that we will have to play Na Gael again to decide who wins Division 4 of the league, this game will be fixed in the next week or so. U16 County Final – Division 4 Fossa 5-05 Na Gaeil 0-10 Fossa arrived in Firies on Wednesday evening for the County final against Na Gaeil as underdogs - on the way to the final, Fossa had lost to Na Gaeil by 15 points in round one. Final score of Fossa 5-5 to Na Gaeil 10 points. Great credit is due to Adrian Sheehan and his management team of Billy Leary, Dominic Rintoul and Mick O’Sullivan. One could see the effort that was put in by the way the team played, great spirit and a toughness that was very evident from the minute the ball was thrown in. U-16 Girls Division 1 Final A huge congrats to our U-16 Ladies footballers who defeated Rathmore in the County League Division 1 Final in Beaufort on Sunday evening. In spite of being down by two points at half time and conceding a goal at the start of the second half, Fossa produced a storming second half display to finish very strongly and kicked some brilliant scores. This was a team performance with everyone, subs included, playing their part and captain, Ciara Griffin accepted the trophy on behalf of her jubilant teammates! Final score, Fossa 1-11, Rathmore 1-06. Race Night Fundraiser Fossa GAA are running a race night on Saturday 29th October towards funding

COMHALTAS Comhaltas after a very successful Fleadh and a fabulous evening celebrating our successes last Monday evening we would like to invite all our members to our first branch meeting after the summer break which will be held on Tuesday 13th September at 8.30pm in the Rural Development Office. All welcome. KILCUMMIN GAA SENIOR FOOTBALL Our senior team had a resounding victory over Glenbeigh/Glencar on Sunday last. Five goals from the boots of Mikey O’Shea, Noel Duggan, Philip Casey, Kevin McCarthy and Shane Smyth were not enough to maintain our Division 1 status as events in Tralee saw Kerins O’Rahillys lose to John Mitchells. So after four years in the top flight we will play in Division 2 next year but there are many positives and promising players to help us to compete well there. We now turn our attention to the County Championship play off against Milltown/Castlemaine on October 2nd in Castleisland and the O’Donoghue Cup fixture against Glenflesk. JUNIOR FOOTBALL Our Junior team were defeated in the final of the County League Group 4 by Glenbeigh/Glencar on Friday last in Beaufort. Final score was 1-7 to 1-10 with Shane Smyth finishing a good move to the Glenbeigh net. Mikey O’Shea 0-3. Chris Keane 0-3 and Gavin O’Leary 0-1 were the other scorers but it wasn’t enough and we lost our second final of the year. Great credit is due to Sean B Doherty, Tommy Cooper and Alan Doolan who put a lot of work into this team during the year and the players who committed to competing in this grade. LADIES FOOTBALL Kilcummin Ladies play in the Junior A Championship final on this Friday September 9th at 6.30pm in Farranfore against Austin Stacks.
