Rotary Tunes Up For Young Musician Contest And Concert KILLARNEY ROTARY CLUB was hitting all the right notes on Wednesday in advance of its 16th Young Musician of the Year competition and concert.

The event, held in association with Killarney Advertiser, offers rising stars of the musical world an unrivalled opportunity to showcase their talents.

The contest takes place in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service centre, Fair Hill, Killarney, on Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5, with the finalnight concert being staged in the nearby Franciscan Friary on Saturday, March 5, at 8pm.

“As always the event is proving hugely popular and we have had approximately 150 entries this year,” said Killarney Rotary President John O’Sullivan at the launch in The Malton.

“Everyone is welcome to the concert in the Franciscan Friary on Saturday, March 5.”

The Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition has contributed hugely to raising the standards of classical music performance in the county over the years, said organiser Sean Treacy of Killarney Rotary Club.

“The objective of the competition is to create a forum for schoolgoing musicians of all standards to perform in public in their chosen discipline,” said Sean. It was Sean and his fellow Rotarian Barry Murphy who first established the contest in 2001. “Not only does it give young people the opportunity to perform alongside their peers, but the contest also opens up

The annual pancake morning held by the Killarney Soroptimist Club is a case in point. It may have been cold outside but excitement boiled to fever pitch in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Shrove Tuesday as the venue played host to the eagerly anticipated charity event, which became something of a central attraction on the political front, as Mícheál Martin made an impromptu appearance. The arrival of the Fianna Fáil leader, surrounded by a smiling phalanx of local candidates and supporters, and trailing camera crews in his wake, certainly caused a stir at the fundraiser.

Just days before, another charity event took centre stage, as the second annual Strictly Come Dancing Killarney mesmerised a capacity audience at the INEC, raising much-needed cash for the Killarney and South Kerry Branch of the Irish Cancer Society in the process.

impressed all when he made a guest appearance at a Killarney Rotary lunch at The Malton Hotel a month later where he dazzled Rotarians and hotel guests alike with a virtuoso performance. James’s wife Grace and son Eoin presented the trophy in his memory.

Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle Lottery Takes Place ON TUESDAY evening, in the presence of Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe, John Cleary of Eventmaster and Edel Hobbert of South West Counselling Centre the button was pushed to start the lottery selection process to select this year’s successful fundraising cyclists for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2016.

With the lottery process complete, ROK Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe gave a breakdown of what will happen next: “The 6,000 successful applicants from the lottery have now been finalised, these individuals will receive a confirmation email on February 15.”

Over the course of the next two days, each applicant will receive a unique code in order to complete their registration, he added. “It is then the respon-

sibility of each individual to comp l e t e t h e i r registration before midnight on Monday, February 22,” said Cathal. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO reminded all applicants that failure to complete registration in this timeframe will result in the place being offered to another lottery applicant: “If any successful applicant should decide to not take up their place; this code will become null and void as of Tuesday February 23. This place will then be offered to another applicant.” The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2016 will take place on July 2.

Question I need to get a medical procedure carried out. I have just found out that I can expect to wait over a year for the procedure in Ireland. Can I get my medical costs refunded if I travel to another country in Europe to have this procedure?

Answer If you are entitled to public health services that are available in Ireland, you can access these services in the European Economic Area (EEA). You will be repaid the cost if you meet the requirements. This is provided for by the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive.

The Directive covers services that are publicly funded and available in Ireland. These include acute hospital services and community-based out-patient care. Other services covered include physiotherapy, ophthalmic, psychology, disability and mental health services.

Occupational therapy services and dental and orthodontic services are also covered, but with some exceptions. Treatments that qualify for the Treatment Abroad Scheme (in general, treatments not available in Ireland) are not covered under the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive.

You must be referred to the health service that you require abroad in the same way that you would be referred to public health services in Ireland. This referral may be by your GP (family doctor) or public hospital consultant for example. They may also be able to tell you whether the service you require is covered by the Directive. You can also check with the National Contact Point (details below).

If the treatment involves an overnight stay in hospital, then it will need to be authorised in advance by the Health Service Executive (HSE). For other treatments, you should check whether prior authorisation is required. You pay the costs of treatment and then apply for a refund when you return to Ireland. The amount repaid is the amount that the treatment would cost in Ireland or the cost of your treatment abroad if that is less. It does not include other costs such as travel. The HSE has published refund amounts for different treatments.

To get a refund of treatment costs, you and your healthcare provider abroad must complete a HSE form. You then submit it with the healthcare provider invoice and receipt.

DEBT SOLUTIONS/ INSOLVENCY OPTIONS Jerry Doyle, co-ordinator, Kerry Money Advice & Budgeting Service (MABS), has some tips on coping with debt and insolvency IF YOU think you may qualify for a Debt Relief Notice (DRN), talk to an Approved Intermediary (AI) by contacting MABS. Other debt solutions include a Debt Settlement Arrangement (DSA) or a Personal Insolvency Arrangement (PIA); get advice from a Personal Insolvency Practitioner (PIP)

You can find a list of AIs and PIPs on the Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI) website www@isi.gov.ie If the above solutions are unsuitable, you should consider Bankruptcy as a solution to dealing with your debt.

CASE STUDY Donna’s story

I’M a mother of two kids. I was working but I got post-natal depression and I was unable to continue it. Then when I got over the depression there were no jobs to be had. I’m on lone parent’s allowance so money is tight. I started to build up debt with the credit union and an overdraft, but I couldn’t make the payments.

For a good few years I really worried about money. And when the letters started to come through the door, I had complete apathy because I didn’t have anything to give. But I knew I couldn’t go on like this forever, so I spoke to MABS and they put me in touch with an Approved Intermediary. Although the process was slow, it was explained clearly to me and they suggested a DRN. While I was waiting for it to be approved, I kept thinking about the solution, wondering would it actually happen, or would they be looking for something else. I live in a council house. I

don’t have anything else.

When I got the call to say it was approved, I felt absolute relief.

All the weight just lifted off me. Now I know what’s what for the next three years. There are no letters or messages now.

And things may change in three years time. If jobs pick up I hope to get back working. I’d recommend ISI and an Approved Intermediary to anyone. I couldn’t believe the amount of help that was out there. I found them to be brilliant. They both gave good, steady advice and set my mind at ease. My 13-year oldson knew something was wrong before, so I was able to tell him, “There’s a plan!” Now he’s an awful lot happier. All I’d say is, if you’re struggling with debt, take a deep breath and get in touch with those who can help. Debt should never become a worry and if it is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I’M A widow, living alone. I was working but I have ill health, so I had been out of work sick when there were redundancies, and I was one of the people let go. I had credit union and credit card debt of about €19,000. This debt, plus the expense of the hospital visits, scans and tests put me under real financial pressure.

For almost five years I’d been struggling to sort things out. Even just trying to deal with everyday bills was a problem. My sisters didn’t know. I didn’t want them to know. I had been going to MABS for a few years and they did a budget for me, but I still couldn’t manage to pay all my bills. I got into a terrible state, I was stressed and in a very bad place.

I heard about DRNs on the radio and thought it might be an option for me. I spoke to my MABS person and they put me in contact with an Approved Intermediary. I was very nervous about my first meeting but it went very well. She explained every word I didn’t know and talked me through the process clearly. When I got the phone call to say my DRN had been approved, I immediately felt calm. I just sat on the chair…right back into it. I felt light. It’s like a big black cloud has lifted from you. I was so glad I didn’t have to go to court. I put my two hands together and said, “Thanks be to God”. Then I made a cup of tea. I was so relieved I was almost crying. In fact, I did cry a tear. The sort of person I am, I bundle things up inside and I think I can deal with it myself. On the outside I was on automatic pilot. I was afraid I would meet people and they would know what was going on. My advice to anyone out there with money difficulties? Stop sitting worrying.

Get up and go to MABS or ISI. Ask them for advice. Ask them about debt relief. Already I feel more at ease, I have more energy and my health is improving. It’s made an unbelievable difference to my life.

KILLARNEY GARDA STATION has become the first station in Ireland to fly the coveted Purple Flag.

The flag is international recognition of towns and cities that are safe and appealing to visitors after dark.

The flag was hoisted at the garda station last Friday evening and it is hoped the town will retain the prestigious award this year.

The Purple Flag is the international gold standard for night-time management of the economy and a

safe and friendly environment from 5pm to 5am.

“Like the Blue Flag for beaches, places that meet the standard can fly the flag,” said Paul O’Neill, chairperson of Killarney’s Purple Flag Committee.

“It recognises excellence in the management of the evening and night-time economy and a safe and friendly environment in which to live, socialise and work.”

Supt Flor Murphy said the award was a recognition of the

commitment there was to safety and the sense of security in one of the country’s busiest tourist destinations.

Killarney achieved the award in 2014 and is now going for three in a row. “In 2016, Purple Flag assessors will again visit Killarney to conduct a full renewal assessment,” said Paul.

TRIBUTES FLOW FOLLOWING TRAGIC DEATH ON MOUNTAIN THE family of Kerry woman Mary Cotter paid poignant tribute to her work as a midwife by asking that those attending her funeral make a donation to stillbirth and neonatal support group Féileacáin instead of leaving flowers.

The mother of three died tragically while walking with a group of hilllwalkers on the Stradbally Mountain on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood that she slipped on steep ground and fell into the Glennahoo river.

A native of Knocknagoshel, she worked as a midwife at Kerry General Hospital.

The Scotia Clinic in Tralee paid emotional tribute on its Facebook page in a post describing Mary as “someone who was always cheerful with a beaming smile.”

THE sold-out success that was the second annual Strictly Come Dancing Killarney has prompted organisers to consider holding the massively popular fundraiser for a third consecutive year.

Over 2000 people packed the INEC last Friday for the event, held in aid of the Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society.

“It was absolutely fantastic and all we can do is thank each and every one of the dancers and each and every one of those that came to support the event,” a delighted Kathrina Breen of the Irish Cancer Society told the Killarney Advertiser.

“To see the audience get to their feet in appreciation of the group of dancers was nothing short of amazing.”

The talented troupe included local hoteliers, builders, car dealers, Gardaí, teachers, farmers and care workers.

Tripping the light fantastic to victory were Garda Aoife Dolan Twomey and Liam Colleran of Budget Car Hire at the International Hotel.

The second Strictly Come Dancing Killarney had Strictly Goes to the Movies as its theme, Dance teacher Joe Burkett coached the troupe of 12 couples and the judges included Marina Cassidy, Niall O’Callaghan, Alan Finn and Elaine Canning.

The 2015 show raised almost €55,000 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

Private Members Card Club Planned For Killarney

A PRIVATE members club offering poker games, roulette, blackjack and gaming machines is to open in Killarney.

The club, which will be in operation in time for the tourist season, will be run by the Gold Rush Casinos in Cork. which has applied for planning permission to open the facility on Buckley’s Lane, at 57 High Street, the former location of Ladbrokes bookmakers.

A planning notice published this week applies to Kerry County Council for change of use of part of the ground floor from a bookmakers to indoor sports and recreational centre including ancillary gaming machines.

Applicant Tony Barry said the facility is not a casino or gaming club and will only be open to members aged over 21.

The application is reported to include provision for four or five gaming machine but the emphasis is on poker tables with professional dealers.

TWO of seven candidates have been elected after the first count in the Listowel Electoral Area local election recount.

The count resumed on Thursday afternoon after a Circuit Court Judge ruled 18 of some 32 disputed papers were valid and could be included in the count. There were a couple of votes in the difference but no real change since 2014.

The count afresh for the Listowel area follows a successful Supreme Court challenge by former Fianna Fáil senator Dan Kiely, who stood as an Independent candidate but lost out on a seat by two votes.Once again Fianna Fail's John Brassil topped the poll, followed by Sinn Fein's Robert Beasley.

KENMARE MART entered the record books on Monday as it broke the world record of the number of pink hats worn at a mart.

Looking pretty in pink, the crowd, including the mart manager, Councillor Dan McCarthy, and members of Templenoe GAA Club,

newly crowned All-Ireland Junior Football Champions, entered the record books in aid of Recovery Haven, Kerry Cancer Support.

update AN IMPRESSIVE €2,100 was generated for the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus by hardy walkers who braved an exceptionally cold and wet day to take a brisk 5k stroll, at their own pace, for the cause.

The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club organised the now annual event on December 27 last and the proceeds from the fundraiser were presented to the chosen charity this week.

There was a great turnout of over 145 adult participants – as well as children – who walked from the Killarney Valley Hotel through the Fossa Way and on to Knockreer.

On their return to the Killarney Valley, they availed of refreshments and enjoyed a traditional music session as well as a raffle with some great spot prizes on offer.

Breda Dyland, spokesperson for Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus, thanked the club for its continued support. “This money really helps in the running of our services,” she said. “The dispersed nature of the healthcare system means that many of our service users have to struggle with the public transport system to attend their hospital appointments.

“Many hospitals are not well served by public transport and the nature of their treatment means that patients often have to attend for therapy every day sometimes for up to eight weeks when they can be physically tired and unwell.

“With the best will in the world, it can be difficult for family members to help due to work and other commitments. This is where we come in and deliver them to the door, free of charge to our users."

Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage spokesman Paul O’Shea thanked all the participants, spot prize sponsors, Killarney School of Music, Killarney Valley Hotel and Mick Myers for the tremendous effort he put in to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Weeshie Inducted Into McNamee Hall Of Fame CONGRATULATIONS to sports broadcasting legend Weeshie Fogarty who was inducted into the McNamee Hall of Fame at the awards in Croke Park on Friday.

The McNamee Awards are held annually to honour excellence in the area of communications, public relations and journalism, specifically related to the activities of the GAA. Killarney native and Legion stalwart Weeshie played at junior and senior level for Kerry and won Kerry and All-Ireland senior football championship medals with East Kerry.

Mícheál Martin helps Soroptimists flip into action THERE WAS a full house on Shrove Tuesday at Killarney Avenue Hotel for the Killarney Soroptimist Club’s annual pancake and coffee morning.

As MC Theresa Irwin of Killarney Soroptimists welcomed all guests to the event, she revealed that a particularly famous guest was attending, with Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin making his way through the function room to meet, greet and address all present.

The pancake morning, which has been taking place for 11 years now, is the group’s main annual fundraiser.

And as the last remnants of Storm Imogen made their drizzly presence felt outside, ladies and gents attending enjoyed the super-relaxing morning get-together.

A raffle and auction added to the excitement, with all proceeds going to local charities and causes.

The ladies organisation, part of an international network, was established over 50 years ago in Killarney as a social and professional network for women in the professions and business. “It has raised tens of thousands of euro for local and Theresa Irwin, Emir O'Shea, Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin, Clodagh Irwin Owens and Ciara Irwin Foley. international charities in its history,” said president Noeleen O’Sullivan.

Killarney Citizens Information Volunteers Take A Bow CIVIC-SPIRITED volunteers from Kerry Citizens Information Centres were honoured at a recent awards ceremony for five and ten years’ service to their community.

Board member Billy Mullins and Manager Frances Clifford presented awards to Maureen Long, May McCarthy and Donough Spillane from Killarney Citizens Information Centre (CIC), Monica Fitzell from Tralee CIC, Denis Lane from Listowel CIC, for 5 and 10 years’ service.

“The camaraderie of working within a welcoming team of like-minded people, the challenge of learning new information and the sense of doing something which is of value to the community are some of the reasons why I volunteer with Citizens Information in Kerry,” said Maureen Long.

Frances Clifford added: “We are very proud of the fact that a lot of people volunteer with us for many years. Volunteers contribute so positively on so many levels. We are very appreciative of the time they selflessly give to assisting others. We simply could not provide the service without them.”

Volunteers are a key part of the service and work along with a small number of paid staff to deliver information, advise and advocacy to the community.

All information providers receive extensive and continuous training to enable them to give up-todate and accurate information to the public.

Those who have used the service have commented that without the professional support of the Citizens Information team they would not have been able to access their rights or deal with the issues which were paramount to them. Last year Kerry CIS responded to over 19,000 callers and over 26,000 queries.

At present Kerry CIS is seeking to recruit new volunteers to join their existing teams across the county. election 2016 ‘We know that Jackie Healy-Rae is with us in spirit and urging us to leave no stone unturned’

THE Healy-Rae dynasty is to run a second candidate in Kerry, as Councillor Danny Healy-Rae confirmed he is to run alongside his brother, Independent TD Michael.

Their father Jackie was elected to the Dáil for Kerry South in 1997.

Michael took over in 2011 and is a strong favourite to retain his seat.

Just minutes before the deadline at noon, the Independent county councillor, representing the Killarney Municipal District, submitted his nomination papers in Tralee to contest the February 26 election.

He became the 16th candidate to run in the constituency.

The brothers said it had been a “joint decision” for them both to run.

Cllr Danny Healy-Rae represents the Killarney electoral area on Kerry County Council.

He was further persuaded to run for the sake of Killarney and east Kerry, now that Deputy Tom Fleming has withdrawn from the race as there is now no sitting councillor or TD running in the area. “Both Michael and I know that Jackie Healy-Rae is with us in spirit and urging us to leave no stone unturned,” said Cllr Healy-Rae. “Going back over 40 years the Healy-Raes have given tremendous service to the people of South Kerry and we feel that we want to continue and enhance this service by having two members of the family representing the people in Dáil Éireann. We are urging people to vote number one for me in the Killarney electoral area and give their number-two preference to Michael.

Likewise we’re asking that the people of the Killorglin, Dingle, Tralee and Listowel areas give their number one to Michael and number two to me.”

Tom Fleming not seeking re-election INDEPENDENT TD for Kerry South Tom Fleming last Friday announced he is not contesting the election. Scartaglin-based Mr Fleming said the redrawing of the Kerry constituency from two three-seaters into one five-seater had put him at a disadvantage.

Mr Fleming, who was due to stand under the Independent Alliance, was first elected to the Dáil in 2011, having twice failed to be elected as a Fianna Fáil candidate.

He was a long-time member of the party, and had served as a party councillor from 1985 to 2011.

Mr Fleming said he had given the matter some thought over Christmas and had discussed it with his wife Lena and family.

“After 30 years as a public representative it was a great honour and privilege to serve the Killarney electoral area as

a county councillor and to be elected by the constituents of South Kerry to Dáil Éireann in 2011,” said Deputy Fleming. “I sincerely thank the electorate to have me continuously representing them since 1985.”

His political colleagues were vociferous in paying tribute to the popular TD. The many wishing him well on his retirement were Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, Minister Jimmy Deenihan, Fine Gael, Deputy Brendan Griffin, Fine Gael, and Deputy Martin Ferris, Sinn Fein.

"I can earnestly say that Tom Fleming is the nicest and most genuine person that I have ever met in politics. It is often said that nice guys don't succeed in politics but thankfully Tom has proven this to be entirely wrong,” said Deputy Griffin.

'Appreciate Our Country, Serve It Wholeheartedly, Cast Your Vote’ THE Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, has urged everyone to cast their vote in the upcoming general eleciton.

Bishop Ray said: “A general election is a unique event in the life of any country. The excitement and the hustle and bustle will be with us over the next few weeks until Election Day.” It is good for our democracy that so many people participate in the campaign, added Bishop Browne. “Each makes a contribution to the strength of our democracy. Best wishes to every election candidate. I urge everyone to cast their vote,” he said.

“I express my appreciation and gratitude to all TDs and Senators for their service over the past five years. When they were elected the country was in great difficulty.”

All the elected representatives in the 31st Dáil and Seanad have played their part in bringing about the welcome recovery, added the Bishop.

“Thankfully a measure of hope and confidence has returned and the country is in a better place today. It is not easy for our representatives having to constantly commute to Dublin. We appreciate their service,” he said.

“Nationwide there is a realisation that there is no room for complacency.

There are many great needs and challenges still to be faced: the inadequacy of some services in our hospitals and disability facilities; significantly reduced pay levels being offered to many; young couples about to marry and young couples with children unable to finance the renting or purchase of a home; child poverty, homelessness, unemployment and high crime levels. Each day we hear people describe so vividly other urgent needs.”

The Bishop of Kerry added that a healthly country is one in which there is a basic civic spirit of care for all fellow citizens, especially the sick, the poor and the vulnerable. “This is our Christian desire for Ireland. Draw strength from the example of all those who have served our country so well in the hundred years since the 1916 Easter Rising which we commemorate this year,” he said.

Profile

Profile Brendan Griffin, TD, has been married to Róisín since 2009. Living in Keel, Castlemaine, 33-year-old is father to Micheál (2) and Breandán (7months).

Elected a TD for Kerry South in 2011, Deputy Griffin is a member of the Oireachtas Transport & Communications Committee, and chairman of Fine Gael Transport, Tourism and Sport Committee.

Deputy Griffin was elected to Kerry County Council for the Dingle Electoral Area from 2009-2011 and was parliamentary assistant to Jimmy Deenihan, TD, from 2004-2007. Brendan has also published two novels.

Priorities

Brendan Griffin’s main achievements in his first Dáil term were getting the 9% rate of VAT for tourism introduced and kept, getting the N22 Ballyvourney to Macroom Bypass and Adare Bypass on the Capital Plan, safeguarding the Kerry Dublin PSO flights, re-introducing the Sports Capital Programme and successfully lobbying for two rounds of USC reductions in Budgets 2015 and 2016.

His top priorities include more jobs and better infrastructure for Kerry, top-class education for all, Kerry’s health services and development of year-round tourism.

Fine Gael Jimmy Deenihan, TD, has had a long and fruitful association with Killarney both as a member of various Kerry football teams between 1970 and 1983 and as a politician since then.

As Minister of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht from March 2011 to July 2014, he was based in Government buildings in New Road.

“During this period I worked very closely with Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, the Trustees of Muckross House and other local organisations on various initiatives such as the restoration of Killarney House, the Schoolhouse project in the National Park and the Lough Leane trail,” said Minister Deenihan.

“As Minister for Diaspora Affairs I also organised a special corporate event to coincide with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in 2015, which attracted people from all over the world.”

Priorities

As a member of Cabinet, Minister Jimmy Deenihan was involved in a number of initiatives that benefited tourism in Killarney such as the reduction of VAT on food and accommodation, the dropping of travel tax, the creation of The Gathering and the Wild Atlantic Way as well as the retention of PSO for Kerry Airport.

“I was delighted to ensure that St Brendan’s College Killarney was included in the Government’s Schools Capital Programme,” he added. “If elected I will continue to work for the people of Killarney and Kerry.”

Profile Martin Ferris has been a Sinn Féin TD since 2002, having previously been a member of Kerry County Council and Tralee Town Council. He is married to Marie and they have 6 children and 13 grandchildren. He lives in Barrow near Tralee. He is currently Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture and Fisheries and is a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture Food and the Marine. Martin is a passionate sportsperson and has been involved in the GAA for many years, winning an All-Ireland U21 medal in 1973.

ESB urges candidates to stick to polls, not poles

As a member of government, Arthur Spring campaigned on a wide range of economic, social and educational issues with the intention to make all of Kerry a better place to work and live. “I need your number-one vote to continue to serve the people of Kerry with honesty and commitment,” he said.

THE ESB has warned election candidates of the perils of erecting posters on electricity poles. Keeping safety in mind, it reminded candidates that the placing of posters on any electricity pole is extremely dangerous.

"Serious injuries have been caused to members of the public when they come in close proximity to electricity wires," an ESB Networks statement said.

It added: "Accessing electricity poles using ladders, hoists or any other means, places the person at serious risk of injury or death.” The statement also warned that "any posters that are erected on electricity poles will be removed".

Meet Kerry’s general election candidates in MARY FITZGIBBON Independent Profile Mary Fitzgibbon is an independent candidate (female non-gender quota) who was born and raised in Tralee. Her husband Michael is from Derry and they have five children. Mary works as a lecturer in Nursing and Health Care Studies at the Institute of Technology, Tralee. “We live in Ballymacelligott with our cat and five hens,” she said.

Priorities

Mary feels many are “disillusioned and distrustful of politicians who have broken election promises”. “Many of us are worse off in terms of income and employment than in 2011 not to mention a decade ago in 2006. Families in particular have been hardest hit, many are working in the public sector, many are self-employed or working in small to medium-sized enterprises,” she said.

Priorities include a socially just society where people are at the centre, where it pays to work, where vital services deliver in terms of health, education and law enforcement, ensuring people can live without fear in their urban and rural communities. “It’s time to abolish unjust taxes, the USC, property tax and water charges,” said Mary.

“It's time to stand up for integrity in political life, to protect life equality by upholding constitutional protection for the unborn, and it's time to support the family.”

HENRY GAYNOR Independent Profile Henry Gaynor, 52, hails from The Spa, about 6km outside Tralee on the Fenit road. Henry is married, with two children going to secondary school. Born and raised on a small farm, he has worked for the past 30 years at the Kerry Group factory in Listowel as a services operator. “I have therefore, a good knowledge of the problems endured by employed people, families, and small farmers since the recession began,” he said.

Priorities

Henry’s main ambition is to see all taxpayers (be they employed, self-employed, business people, farmers, fishermen, home makers, retired people) united into one political group.

“By forming a single voting bloc, taxpayers would be able to form their own government and run the country in the interests of the people who live in it,” he said.

Kevin Murphy is a local community activist in Kerry.

An active member of the Right2Water Killarney and Right2Water Kerry community, this is Kevin’s first time running for election. “I am a supporter of the Right2Change policy principles, these principles were made up of over 90 submissions from trade unions, politicians and community activists,” he said. “I believe these principles are a foundation to build a recovery for all and a society for all. I have signed up to the National Women's Council of Ireland's election manifesto.”

Kevin’s priorities include the abolition of water charges, the abolition of Irish Water, a referendum to enshrine ownership of the public supply to the people through the Constitution, progressive taxation to pay for the upgrade and repair of the supply, through work done by county councils, increased investment in Kerry General Hospital, development of mental health services and reform of the health service, investment in carers and special needs assistants, affordable childcare, housing, jobs, income equality, protection of rural Ireland, strengthening of credit unions, protection of farmers and their livelihoods, increased investment in rural areas to create jobs, the re-opening of Garda Stations, development of infrastructures such as transport, telecommunications and housing, and political reform.

Council issues poster warning KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is asking candidates and political parties to refrain from placing posters for the general election on road traffic signs or poles as well as overhead bridges. Posters should not obstruct sight lines for motorists and the view of motorists or present a traffic hazard.

GRACE O’DONNELL Fine Gael Profile Former Mayor of Tralee and town councillor, Grace O’Donnell has an exceptionally strong record in the voluntary sector.

She is co-founder Kare4Kids (supports families with sick children); The Recovery Haven (Cancer Support); Kerry Life Skills (Future health and wellbeing of children), Tralee Rotary Club, the Kerry Camino (Promotes Kerry walks), Tralee Chamber Alliance, and Kerry Film Festival.

Priorities

The biggest source of inequality and unfairness in this country is unemployment, says Grace. “More jobs mean less tax for people working and more revenue to provide better services,” she said. “This Fine Gael-led Government has added 125,000 jobs since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in February 2012. Jobs are the best way out of poverty. Budget 2016 is proof positive that Fine Gael is committed to securing and spreading the recovery. The USC has been cut and 700,000 people removed from charge. The Government has begun to equalise the tax treatment of the self-employed.

There are measures to help families with childcare and GP visits for under-12s. The minimum wage has been increased and there is hep for pensioners. The budget helps farming families and entrepreneurs. Fine Gael is doing its very best to spread the benefits of recovery to as many homes as possible.”

Fine Gael’s outgoing TDs, Brendan Griffin and Minister Jimmy Deenihan, are joined by party colleague and former Tralee mayor Grace O’Donnell.

Fianna Fáil is running two candidates, Councillor John Brassil and Waterville-based Norma Moriarty.

Independent Michael Healy-Rae has been joined by brother Danny HealyRae as his running mate.

MICHAEL “PIXIE” O’GORMAN Independent Profile Running as an independent candidate, Michael “Pixie” O’Gorman pledges to be “a voice for the people of Kerry, not a political party in Dublin”. “Policies not politics is what we need,” said Michael. He added: “In the last two years I have been more outspoken than any TD from Kerry on subjects of the bank bailout, the Anglo debt, the sale of Coillte Forest, and the setup of Irish Water for the privatization of our water supply.”

Priorities

People on the ground are dealing with food poverty, eviction, housing crises, homelessness, a health system falling apart, trolleys in hallways, mental health and waiting lists to see doctors, rural crime, and water charges, says Michael “Pixie” O’Gorman. “These are just the basic human needs we as a society should aim for all the people of Ireland, food, housing, water and safety in our homes. The government’s answers are mobile homes, food banks, soup kitchens and a few fast police cars,” he said.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the US and Europe is a big campaign issue for Michael.

KERRY CONSTITUENCY Seats: 5 Population: 145,502

THERE will be 16 candidates in the new five-seater Kerry constituency which has replaced the previous three-seaters of Kerry North and Kerry South – and it’s very hard to make a call on the new configuration.

The Civil War defined politics in Kerry for decades, with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael dominant. From the 1940s, a strong Labour presence was maintained by the Spring dynasty in Kerry North and the Moynihan dynasty in Kerry South. Sinn Féin came to the fore as a strong electoral player when Martin Ferris took a seat in Kerry North in 2002.

Nowadays politics in Kerry is mainly defined by economic issues.

In the last election, Fianna Fáil found itself with no seat in Kerry. In Kerry North-Limerick West, Tom McEllistrim, whose grandfather and father, both also named Tom, had served in the Dáil, lost his seat.

Fine Gael’s Jimmy Deenihan, currently Minister of State for the Diaspora, broke a local party record when he secured 41% of the vote and comfortably held his seat. Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris retained his seat.

Arthur Spring, whose uncle Dick, a former Labour leader and Tánaiste, and grandfather, Dan, represented the constituency, won back the Labour seat and nearly doubled the vote the party secured in 2007. In Kerry South, Fianna Fáil’s John O’Donoghue, who had resigned as Ceann Comhairle in a controversy over expenses, lost his seat to a former party colleague, Independent Tom Fleming. Fine Gael’s Tom Sheahan lost out to party colleague Brendan Griffin, while Independent Michael Healy-Rae succeeded his father, Jackie.

NORMA MORIARTY Fianna Fáil Profile A MEMBER of Kerry County Council, Norma Moriarty lives in Waterville and works as a teacher in Kenmare where she teaches English and co-ordinates learning support. Cllr Moriarty has been involved at all levels in her community over a 20-year period.

“I was elected to KCC in May 2014 and since then I have been appointed to the Board of Kerry Education and Training Board, Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee and I am chairperson of the Local Community Development Committee,” she said.

“I have been on our community development organisation for 15 years during which time an early years centre was founded and a new water treatment facility was finally secured for the area. Numerous festivals and events were also started with a view to promoting business and tourism.”

Priorities

Councillor Moriarty says she deems it a privilege to live in this county. “I believe that we need to work together and immediately if we are to ensure the survival of our rural and urban areas,” she said. “The worrying decline in our population in rural areas has and will continue to adversely affect the economic and social life of all areas. Towns need a vibrant hinterland to ensure their own sustainability.”

DANNY HEALY-RAE Independent Profile Danny Healy-Rae represents the Killarney electoral area on Kerry County Council. He received 4,388 first preference votes, more than twice the quota, in the last local elections in 2014. Councillor Healy-Rae handed in his nomination papers just minutes before the noon deadline yesterday, accompanied by his brother, TD Michael Healy-Rae. The two brothers said it had been a joint decision for them both to run. Michael Healy-Rae has been an Independent TD for Kerry South since he took over from their father, Jackie Healy-Rae, at the 2011 general election when he won the third seat in the constituency. “Both of know that Jackie Healy-Rae is with us in spirit and urging us to leave no stone unturned,” said Danny.

Priorities

Councillor Danny Healy-Rae notes that the Healy-Rae priority is “the people we represent”. He is determined to continue the Healy-Raes’ record of service stretching back over four decades. “We feel that we want to continue and enhance this service by having two members of the family representing the people in Dáil Éireann. We are urging people to vote number one for me in the Killarney electoral area and give their number-two preference to Michael. Likewise we’re asking that the people of the Killorglin, Dingle, Tralee and Listowel areas give their number one to Michael and number two to me,” he said.

CUPID’S ARROW ON TARGET FOR VALENTINE’S AS WE get ready for this Valentine’s Weekend in Killarney let’s cast our mind back to the roots of the celebration.

Valentine's Day, also known as Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14 each year. St Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies.

A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, and in 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").

LUKE 4:1-13: The temptations were a step for Jesus in his growing understanding of his mission and of his relationship with his Father. Can you look back at some painful experiences and acknowledge that you have grown through them, both in your knowledge of yourself, and in your relationship with God? Give thanks for the guidance of the Spirit of God in these times.

Behind each of the temptations is a basic temptation to lose trust in God. Jesus resisted this because he recognised his complete dependence on his Father. How have you come to recognise your dependence on God? One can enter into each of the temptations singly. There may be ones that you have experienced: the temptation to give priority to bodily needs and satisfactions; the temptation to power; the temptation to seek to be the centre of attention.

AS WE begin our journey through Lent, it is, perhaps worth reminding ourselves of the cautionary words of the sixth-century monk, Gildas, who criticised the misplaced zeal of some monks who preferred “fasting to charity, vigils to justice, their own contrivances to concord, severity to humility and, finally, man to God”. These things, when cut off from their roots in love, are worthless. The late Dominican theologian Herbert McCabe was fond of stating that the central doctrine of Christianity is that “if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you”.

THE temptations are not just an embarrassing episode in the life of Jesus but are an integral part of his mission. Jesus is tempted to eat when he is not supposed to eat, to take the easy route of power through exploitation, when that is not His way. Ultimately, God is in control here; this wilderness is “Spirit” led. And so it is for us. When it comes down to it, each of the temptations are about the same thing, our ability to trust in God. This should not direct us towards complacency but to listening.

We listen to God’s Word and this year’s Trócaire campaign is urging us to listen to what God is saying through the Book of Creation; to trust in those signals and signs. Listening to the story of Teresina this year, we hear of an effect of climate change that is often overlooked: a family forced apart because of dry land. This past year we have seen large movements of refugees around the world. We know that the next generation of refugees will be climate refugees. It does not have to be this way. As we enter the “wilderness” of Lent, let us spend time with the temptations in the Gospel today and hear the call to “trust”. Trust what God is trying to tell us through the Book of Creation. It is in the wasteland that we find the signs of God’s renewal.

In the words of Pope Francis in Laudato Si: “I urgently appeal for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.”

Top Gear's new lineup: the 'magnificent seven from motoring heaven’ TOP GEAR has dominated the motoring headlines since July last year after the sacking of Jeremy Clarkson for punching Irish show producer Oisin Tynan and the departure of his co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond.

The question on everyone’s mind since has been “who will be the hosts of the new season?” This week Top Gear has gone from a triumvirate of presenters to a full house, with the show confirming its final lineup of seven presenters this week. Last week, it was announced that actor Matt LeBlanc form Friends fame would be Top Gear's new co-host alongside British presenter Chris Evans.

The "magnificent seven from motoring heaven" as Evans has dubbed the new presenters, are designed to broaden Top Gear’s appeal. Commenting on his new team, he said: “A fellow lifelong petrolhead from the other side of the pond in Matt; a fearless speed-demon in the irrepressible and effervescent Sabine; the encyclopedic, funny and wonderfully colourful character that is EJ; Chris, one of the world’s top nononsense car reviewers; and Rory, who simply blew me away in his audition and fully deserves his place on the team.”

The new show is due to air this spring.

FIA insists Rally Sweden is on OUR local interest in the WRC continues this weekend as Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle are due to compete in Rally Sweden. Snow – or the lack of it – has been the major talking point ahead of this week's event.

In the last number of days the event has being hanging in the balance but with weather fore-

casts are predicting an eleventh-hour freeze, hopes are high that the event will see some proper winter weather soon.

The current conditions have forced a re-jig of the pre-rally itinerary. This event is billed as an all-snow event and some competitors are asking for the event to be cancelled if the con-

ditions remain.

This event is important to Kris and Paul as they are not running a full WRC programme this year and every event counts. The last outing in Rallye Monte Carlo showed great potential but for an unlucky encounter with a rock which put them out of the event while in second position.

Pollution Levels In Killarney A Worry For Kerry’s 14,000 Asthmatics ON MONDAY evening the Asthma Society of Ireland held a public meeting in the Killarney Avenue Hotel as part of its national Clean Air Campaign. The meeting focused on the air quality situation in Kerry and in particular Killarney as well as looking at the national picture.

Those present, including many of the local General Election candidates, were surprised to learn that on certain winter nights air pollution levels in Killarney were between six to ten times higher than in Dublin City centre.

This was a finding of the EPA-funded Sapphire Project conducted by University College Cork.

The main contributing factor to these high air pollution levels was domestic solid fuel burning and in particular smoky coal burning.

Killarney is not a smokeless zone presently.

In response to the findings of Sapphire the Asthma Society is calling on the EPA and local Authorities to commence a programme of installing air monitoring equipment which will be capable of detecting PM10, PM 2.5 and PM1 across the country.

As a direct result of Sapphire Project Wexford County Council are currently installing air monitoring sites across the county.

Council has been rolling out across the towns in the county must be commended and replicated by Kerry County Council and other local authorities across the country. The air pollution detected in Enniscorthy was replicated in Killarney.

When it comes to real-time (within the hour) monitoring, comparisons become even more stark. There are only three Irish monitoring stations capable of reporting real-time concentrations of the standard parameters for particulate matter, PM2.5 and PM10 located in South Dublin, Clare and Mayo. There is one EPA funded air monitoring site currently situated in Kerry however it does not report in realtime and only detects PM10.I think we need to see the development of a Clean Air Act that puts health at the forefront of environmental regulations. Over the course of the General Election campaign we would encourage everyone in Kerry to ask their candidates to work to implement a nationwide smoky coal ban as quickly as possible if they are elected to the Dáil following the election.

Funding For Pedestrian Crossing For Ballycasheen NS I WISH to inform parents and patrons of St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen, that I have allocated €4,000 of my councillor’s allocation to provide a controlled pedestrian crossing for St Oliver’s NS at Countess Road to enhance the safety of parents and pupils when crossing the road at drop-off and pick-up times.

This controlled crossing will provide greater safety for both pupils and parents into the future.

Boost For IWA Centre

KATHLEEN MCLOUGHLIN, CEO of Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) was delighted to accept a generous donation of €50,000, from Kerry Group on Wednesday towards a new Resource and Outreach Centre.

The new IWA centre, currently under construction, will provide essential services to people with disabilities from a modern, high spec, accessible facility located at the Reeks Development, Killarney. The association hopes to expand its high quality services to the people of Killarney. The centre will also be available to other community and voluntary groups.

The Kerry branch of Samaritans is looking to increase the number of listening volunteers as there is a huge increase in the demand for its listening and support service.

The Samaritans aim to help people experiencing difficulty in their lives that may lead them to having suicidal thoughts or feelings or that maybe just want to talk about what is going on in their lives.

“Working 24/7, 365 days a year, we took 47,000 calls and contacts in the Kerry branch in 2015 at 43/44 Moyderwell, Tralee,” said a spokeswoman.

“We are there for everyone and we provide a non-judgmental service.”

The vision of Samaritans is to have fewer people die by suicide. “What sort of person will make a good Samaritan volunteer? We are about the simple art of listening offering a non-judgmental support,” added the spokeswoman.

“We have comprehensive six-week training programme.

All this will outlined at our information and recruitment nights in Killarney at the KDYS centre, Fair Hill, on Wednesday, February 17, at 8pm, and in Manor West Hotel in Tralee on Thursday, February 18, at 8pm. All are welcome to come along.”

Club Captain Liam Hartnett was saddened, that once again, the planned competition schedule for last weekend was totally “washed out”, and on this occasion, by just ordinary rainfall, such is the saturation that our courses have endured since mid November last, that they easily became flooded once more, he remarked, that this is ridiculous, the biblical deluge only lasted for forty days and forty nights and now we are well past that, sure it was no wonder that we called the course that we concocted, in order to have some golf being played on recently, the “Ark” worst of all, can you imagine that “Imogen” is on her way to us, we really should stop giving names to these storms, just look at what has happened to us since we started, late last year.!!!

With no Golf Club results to comment on, once again, then can we please take this opportunity to remind all of those who gave any form of assistance whatsoever in the clean-up’s of our courses in December and January that the-time sheet for the “four person scramble” our complimentary and thank you competition, is currently available in the Club House, and we very much look forward to seeing a full time-sheet for the event next Saturday, with a start time scheduled for 10.30am on the Mahony’s Point course, and the prize giving will be in the Club House around 3.30pm.

Muckross Rowing Club

CORK HEAD OF THE RIVER Well done to all our crews who competed in the Cork Head Of the River at the city Marina on Saturday last. With wind and rain for much of the day, the event was not suitable for the youngest of crews and the event organisers reduced the course distance to make the row safe for older crews. For the more experienced rowers it was a test of endurance in wet and sometimes rough conditions. Our thanks to John Beazley who towed the boats, to Elaine Daly, Derry Doyle and Brendan O’Neill who assisted with organisation on the day.

ST. MICHAEL’S HEAD OF THE RIVER Training continues at the normal times this weekend ahead of the St. Michael’s Head Of the River which is due to take place on Saturday 20th Febru-

ary. With water levels remaining very high on the river Shannon, it remains to be seen if the event will be able to proceed with the passing of yet another winter storm Imogen last weekend. A final call is likely to be made by the event organisers no later than the middle of the coming week.

MUCKROSS HEAD OF THE RIVER Our own time trial event, the Muckross Head Of the River, has been rescheduled for Saturday 5th March between 10am and 3pm. We are hopeful of a large crew entry from clubs eager for competitive rowing after all the disappointing weather over winter. It is all hands on deck for the event which has grown considerably since its first staging at the National Rowing Centre in 2003. Our thanks to everyone who has signed up already to assist. Grounds Committee Report During the course of a most comprehensive report to the recent club AGM Ger O’Connor outlined the many developments that took place in Deerpark during 2015 including improvement to the Clubhouse and Course including he erection of a new sand bank. Ger outlined a number of improvements to be undertaken on the course during 2016 including the erection of new fencing and hedging around the perimeter.

Ger extended a special word of thanks to all the members who had worked on course maintenance during the season including the members of the CE Scheme.

Results: Denny Division 1A: Killarney Athletic B 0-4 A.C. Athletic In a game where the scoreline didn’t reflect the game Athletic will rue their missed chances having hit the crossbar and posts on multiple occasions.

Athletic were 1-0 down in the blink of an eye with some sloppy defending.

Having gone 2-0 down just before the break, We were unlucky not to pull one with Rafa hitting the crossbar. However the game was beyond our reach with A.C scoring twice early in the second half. Plenty of positives to take from the game but a lot of work to be done at training which continues Friday 7-8pm.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Now that the Salmon Anglers have had about a month of watching mother nature bring wave after wave of rain bearing weather down onto our rivers and lakes , they will be joined on the shores on the 15th of February by their Trout Angling colleagues as the Trout Angling Season opens .

No doubt there will be a drive among some of them to catch a trout in present waters that would normally be a field or car park or other non angling associated locations!

Presently a number of Affiliated Body AGM’s are taking place but some direction is reaching us about inter-provincial competitions resulting from regional competitions held last year .

The qualifying anglers from the inaugural Munster Masters competition held on Lough Lein last year are now scheduled to take part in the Inter-provincial being held on Lough Corrie on Saturday 19th March 2016.

Also potentially arriving at your doors in the coming days will be candidates for the forthcoming election and while you may have already have a long list for discussion with same - in the interest of your sport and the sustainability of the wild salmon and sea trout stock, you might take the time to quiz your candidates on their intentions, regarding ensuring that our nations estuary waters are free of any salmon farms and that the focus of new salmon farms follow the environmentally friendly land-based model such as Re-circulation Aquaculture Systems ( RAS is principally fish farming in tank systems onshore with sustainable use of fresh water ) which could alleviate many of the problems net cage fish farms on coastal waters creates.

While you might feel little hope as an individual of influencing any substantial change in policy, rest assured that fellow anglers for clubs all over the island are bringing these very questions to bear on their aspiring Dail candidates and with this effort on the ground, the pending government should be left in no doubt as to the concerns of the anglers nationally and the necessity to grapple with the issue and implement changes before the existing Salmon and Sea Trout stocks are pushed further into decline from a preventable source.

Celtic Park to Host U18 International

Celtic Park has been announced as the host venue for the U18 Centenary Shield Match between Ireland and Scotland on Thursday, April 14th. This is a great honour for the club and testament to the standard of our facilities and the hard work done by wonderful volunteers on previous occasions.

Managers’ Meeting A meeting for ALL MANAGERS of Killarney Celtic will take place on March 5th.

The meeting will give managers a chance to network, to give reviews of their season to date, to get briefings on welfare, media and club development. Attendance compulsory.

40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations,

we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back).

Results Denny Premier: Killarney Celtic 5 St. Brendans Park 4 Unbelievable stuff. Park led by 3-2 at half-time through Fergal Maunsell, a Mike Conway penalty, and Mark O’Sullivan, Peter McCarthy and a pinpoint Joe Hurley top corner free kick on target for us. Park went ahead 4-2 through a bullet header from Con Barrett, but a calm and composed Celtic began to dominate. Peter made it 4-3 and Celtic were thwarted in a number of chances before Stephen Hayes neatly drilled home from outside the box after a great team move.

Celtic had the wind in their sails now and Stephen McCarthy with a brilliant finish that belies his age put us ahead. Well done to every player on both sides; this was thrill-a-minute sporting soccer and a real pleasure to watch.

U15 Premier: Killarney Celtic 3 Killorglin 0 A great display, with Patrick Darcy hitting the net twice and Evan Looney adding our third.

Of greater significance was Celtic wearing black armbands and a minute’s silence for the late and much loved Sheila Kelliher; it was immaculately observed by both teams and all supporters.

U13 Premier: Killorglin 2 Killarney Celtic 0 A great effort by the whole team, but an excellent Killorglin took the points on offer.

U13 Div One: Killarney Celtic B 2 St. Brendans Park C 1 A cracking and very sporting game, and a superb win for Celtic. Jason Lee with a free-kick that Ronaldo or Messi would struggle to emulate put us up

1-0 at half-time. Park equalised - they are a great outfit too - but Ruairi Dorrian in the last five minutes scored a beauty to claim the points. The whole team were fantastic, but Erin Moloney’s incredible display has to be singled out for mention.

U11 Blitz: Killarney Celtic hosted a brilliant blitz on Saturday evening where a lot of fun was had by all. A huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers.

Killaney RFC

​U14: Our U14’s travelled the short distance to Listry to take on Killorglin RFC last Saturday, in the latest round of the West Munster League. Conditions were brutal as the game commenced, however the driving rain went largely unnoticed as Killarney started with a bursting try from second row captain Craig McKensie Vass who lead from the front all day. Killarney’s second try came from first time out half Dion O’Neill. Tries also from our no. 8 Cian Murphy and full back Damien Switzer.

Cian Murphy converted 3 of the tries.

While the conditions were tough for both sides the quality and skills of all the Killarney players was exciting for all to see. Subs that came on integrated well into the team with everyone giving 100%.

The game ended with a solid win for the visitors on a scoreline of 26 to 5 to Killarney. A huge thanks must go to our travelling supporters who constantly travel to games to shout on their side.

Next match at home to Tralee on Saturday next. Kick off is at 11am.

U18: Castleisland/Killarney U18’s continued their good results of late with a successful road trip to take on Cork Con last Saturday.

The combined team have been really taking off and the hard training is standing to the lads. With a shaky start to the season, the results are coming and the lads returned home with a victory over Cork Con on a scoreline of 20 points to nil. Well done to Paul Sheahan and the lads!

Senior XV: Our Seniors were due to play Carrick on Suir last Saturday in the league, however Carrick were unable to field a

team so the game was cancelled. The Seniors will play Douglas/Carrigaline next Sunday at Aghadoe. Please come along and support the lads in this important league match. Kick off is at 2:30pm.

Girls Rugby: Killarney RFC are committed to developing ladies rugby in Killarney. We are hoping to run an open day in March for the local schools where by all the 5th and 6th class girls will be invited to try out rugby under the watchful eye of coaches from the Munster Branch and our own club coaches.

To this end, we are actively recruiting female coaches, who would like to help in coaching in the new girls section, which we hope to have up and running in March.

The annual Church Gate collection will take place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th February.

We are making a special appeal to ALL the Parents in the Killarney South Area whose Child competed in any event last year i.e.

FIRST LEAGUE WIN ON KERRY SOIL FOR ROSCOMMON ROSCOMMON came to Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last and went away with their first League win on Kerry soil against a wasteful Kerry side on a final score of 0-14 to 1-9 before an attendance of 4,507 which included a sizeable travelling support for the Westerners.

One could hardly say that they did not deserve their win after dominating long periods of the second half despite playing against the elements. Kerry started in flying form going three points ahead within eight minutes but Roscommon responded with eight unanswered points – a statistic that does not reflect well on the homeside – before Kerry finished the half well with a Stephen O’Brien goal to lead a the break, 1-6 to 0-8. Kerry dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half but poor shooting meant that Stephen O’Brien’s point in the 48th minute left them just two points to the good.

Roscommon tacked on four unanswered points as Kerry continued to pass up scoring chances before eventually running out of ideas up front and the fact that Conor Cox’s point in the 42nd minute of the half was their solitary score in 29 minutes of second half play will not be lost on manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his management team.

Three-week break

Colm Cooper and Marc Ó Sé have both resumed training while Kieran Donaghy was due to re-join the pane this week.

Kieran O’Leary, the Geaneys, Jack Sherwood and Peter Crowley, all of whom had legacy injuries attended to over the Winter period, are not expected back until March while Anthony Maher and James O’Donoghue are not expected to return to training until April.

Under 21 players Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Tom O’Sullivan and Barry O’Sullivan, who have been part of the senior panel for the opening two rounds of the League, will now return to the Under 21 squad for the duration of that team’s Under 21 Championship campaign which gets underway on March 9 in Austin Stack Park against Tipperary.

Double delight

There was double delight for Kerry clubs in the AIB All Ireland Club Finals in Croke park on Saturday last when St Marys and Templenoe got the better of Mayo opposition in contrasting fashion to return to the Kingdom with both titles in their possession thus emulating the feat of Brosna and Ardfert last year and indeed Skellig Rangers and St Michaels-Foilmore in 2009.

Kerry footballers now have a three week break and then there are three games in successive weekends starting on February 28 against Down (A), Donegal (Austin Stack Park) and Mayo (A), and then, following a two week break, Kerry finish up with Monaghan (A) and Cork at home in Austin Stack Park.

The crucial scores for the Kenmare District side came either side of half time with goals from Brian Crowley and Stephen O’Sullivan and though they went without a score for 18 minutes of the second half, hat-trick hero O’Sullivan and his comrades finished the game in style to leave no doubt as to whom the better team was.

The Kerry Supporters Club is planning ahead for Round 3 of the Allianz Football League already! They are taking buses to the Kerry v Down AFL game on February 28 in Newry. This is an overnight trip and booking for the trip with full payment must be made on Monday night next, February 15, at 8.30pm in both the Listowel Arms and Ballygarry House Hotel.

Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne’s dominance of the Munster Colleges Corn Uí Mhuirí may have come to an end this year but St Brendan’s College Killarney hope to carry on where the West Kerry side left off in three weeks time following their 2-14 to 0-5 semi-final victory over St Flannans of Ennis in Rathkeale last Saturday. Their opponents will be CBS High School Clonmel who shocked Rochestown College to advance to the final of a competition they last won way back in 1928, the inaugural year of the competition.

Killarney Legion Clubman and Radio Kerry presenter Weeshie Fogarty was inducted into the McNamee Awards Hall of Fame at Croke Park also on Friday night last.

Weeshie played Junior and Senior football for Kerry and won Kerry and All Ireland senior football championship medals with East Kerry. Nowadays Weeshie is better known as the presenter of the Radio Kerry award winning sports show Terrace Talk.

North Kerry – A Hurling History, the splendid publication by Tommy O’Connor which traces the history of the North Kerry Hurling Board since its inception in 1925, has been awarded the prestigious GAA McNamee Award for Best GAA Club Publication at an awards ceremony in Croke Park on Friday night last.

Under 13 Skills Competition An Under 13 Skills Competition will be held in each District this year, with winners qualifying for the County Under 13 Skills Final. Clubs are encouraged to enter a team, which will consist of 3 players. The idea behind the competition is to get as many players as possible participating through, in the first place, an internal club competition, to determine the 3 team members to represent the club in the Divisional skills competition.

Firies/Ballyhar

Coiste na nÒg Registration for GAA Coiste na nÓg Boys: U12 (born 2004 and 2005), U14 (born 2003 and 2002) and U16 (born 2001 and 2000) players will take place between 7:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, 12th February (final date) in Pairc Eamon, Farranfore.

Completed Registration forms are compulsory and payment of membership fees must be made on the night. Membership involves written consent and contact information by both the player and their parents/ guardians. It is obligatory that membership must be completed prior to training/playing. Please note that a parent/guardian must be in attendance on the night. In the meantime, our U14 and U16 boys continue to train in preparation for the busy season in Pairc Eamon. It is envisaged that the registration and subsequent training for the younger age groups (U6, U8 & U10) will take place in March. Details to follow.

Seniors The senior team began their East Kerry Super league campaign on Sunday morning against Scartaglin. This was a game that was dominated by the

elements with wind and rain running the game as a contest, Scartaglin had the aid of the wind in the first half and led 1-7 to 0-1 at half time, however Fossa scored 6 points on the trot in the second half while Scartaglin failed to score at all in this half. Fossa were unable to break down a resolute defence and couldn’t get a goal to get them back in the game and Scart held on to win 1-7 to 0-7. Fossa will play Firies in the next round in two weeks time.

Membership: Club Membership is now due and the rates for 2016 are as follows, Family membership, which includes both parents and all their children up to minor age, stays at €60, adult remains at €30, while youth/student is €15.

Strictly Come Dancing A huge congratulations to Liam Colleran and Aoife Dolan Twomey who won Strictly Come Dancing in the INEC last Friday night. In what was a huge occasion, Liam and Aoife gave an exhibition of Tango dancing to sweep the boards, much to the delight of their huge following. We often hear inter-county players complain about the amount of training that they have to endure but I believe Liam and Aoife would put them in the shade with the amount of practice they put in over the past couple of months! Club Finals Fossa GAA Club would like to congratulate St Mary’s and Templenoe on winning the All-Ireland Intermediate and Junior titles in Croke Park on Saturday night, it was a great occasion and it’s wonderful to see our club sides being successful at this level.

WELL DONE WEESHIE Huge congratulations to Weeshie Fogarty on his induction into the MacNamee Hall of Fame. The MacNamee Awards are presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions made by individuals and Association units in the area of media and communications. Weeshie was honoured by Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Aogán Ó Fearghail at a function at Croke Park last week.

FÉILE The Féile is taking place in the south west (Kerry, North Cork and West Limerick) this year from June 24th to 26th. The last time the Féile took place in Kerry was in 1994 so it’s a big deal.

Both our Legion U-14 boys and our Legion U-14 girls teams have entered the competition. Our boys won the Kerry Féile in 2006 and 2009 and our girls won in 2013. Féile is the biggest single sporting event in Europe with over 5,500 young players taking part from all over Ireland as well as from the UK, USA and even Italy this year.

The region can expect to see well over 70,000 visitors so we’ll need a small bit of help! Our club will be hosting two visiting teams and we’re looking for volunteers for all sorts of tasks to help out leading up to and during the event. This should be a tremendous occasion for our young players, their families and supporters alike. More updates to follow.

(Registrations after this date will not be issued with a registration card-something that is necessary to gain your free entry to home county league games) As you will agree, these are fantastic rates- for the juvenile/student/OAP - it works out at 58 cent per week, while a family membership (up to 2 adults and 4 children) works out at just under €2 per week.

And don’t forget that membership entitles you free entry to all our home Co. League games - worth €30(on production of your membership card) as well as entry to the Munster Final ticket draw and that all important All Ireland ticket draw in September!

Membership also entitles all those aged 18 and over to vote at the AGM. Certainly great value for money!
