WELCOME Welcome to the February edition of Home and Living. While January seemed to last for three months, February has just flown by. But seriously, this rain, is it ever going to stop! Hopefully a fine summer awaits. This month we are looking at the smallest rooms in our homes - the bathrooms. The main bathrooms in our home have gone through a bit of a transformation becoming a room in our home rather than a functional space, and we can see the trends reflect this.

So, if you are thinking of doing a bit of decorating we have looked at the top trends for 2020 to give you a head start. For those of us not brave enough to tackle the garden in this wet weather, we have looked at some indoor planting to bring some spring inside!
Noelle Casey
and the Killarney Advertiser Team
BRING SPRING INSIDE Growing bulbs indoors or sometimes called “forcing bulbs” lets you enjoy the colour and fragrance of spring inside, where it’s not so chilly! Paper white narcissus, hyacinths, crocus and muscari, work really well for this and look amazing in a glass bowl. For the price of a couple of coffees you can watch flowers bloom with the added bonus of a wonderful scent, especially if you pick hyacinth. For these arrangements all I bought was some hyacinth and narcissus in pots for €1.50 in MD O’Sheas, the glass bowls I had already for candles and are from TK Maxx and IKEA. Some moss from the garden and off cuts of contorted hazel from last year - and spring has sprung at least indoors!

Are you the type of person who prefers a relaxing bubble bath over a quick shower? Do you see the bathroom as a place to unwind after a busy day? If so, this trend might be one for you. 혲 CALM Calmer spaces focus on the mind and create a look which will help you relax, refresh and recharge those batteries. Combinations of light woods against soft tones in shades of blues, greens and blush pinks will create the subtle backdrop for this look. All colours are carefully selected as they create a tranquil atmosphere.
혲 MIXING METALS Love the trend towards nickle, but still love your brass? Yes, you can mix metals. All-brass can be too much, and is a trend that may date your bathroom, but if you soften the impact of one finish with the introduction of another, it will more than likely stand the test of time. For example, my next purchase
for my bathroom is a large gold mirror but my bath has a stainless-steel skirt. You don't have to change everything to match, leaving the fixtures and fittings and introducing a new element gives a more eclectic feel.
혲 FREE STANDING BATH Deep soaking bathtubs never go out of style. 2020 sees the trend change to Art deco style, still making a statement but white being the colour of choice.
혲 NATURAL HUES As trends turn towards warmer earth tones, the bathroom is heading in that direction by shunning white tiles in favour of warmer natural hues. We want a less clinical more cosseted homely feeling in our bathrooms.

FRAMED MIRROR
SPA LIKE BATHROOMS
The trend of not using a bathroom mirror but using a mirror you would see in a living room or bedroom is still strong. You can never go wrong with a framed mirror in your bathroom, as well as being one of the few ways of bringing your style into this sometimes-clinical room. It instantly upgrades the space!
The bathroom as a space in the home has changed over the past few decades. No longer is this purely a place for perfunctory daily tasks, the bathroom is a place for relaxation. People are spending more time in the bathroom, using the space for detoxing and relaxing, and in turn we are spending more money on this room with luxury fixtures and fittings and as quality never goes out of style - its money well spent, the design ethos is reflecting this shift.
TILE WAINSCOTING Wainscoting is back - but not in the traditional country wooden style previously seen this year. We are seeing tiles used as wainscoting in bathrooms to add some drama and extra punch.
SMALLER VANITIES 2020 will be moving away from chunky pieces, especially when it comes to bathroom vanities - terrific news for those of us with small bathrooms. To make your slimmer bathroom sink practical, only keep essential goodies in your space.
GOING TO THE DARK SIDE While the trend of clean cut almost Nordic look bathroom of neutrals is big, those that like the darker side are still on trend. Historically, common design sense has dictated that you decorate a small bathroom space in light colours and mirrors in order to make the room seem larger. This old ‘wisdom’ is now being thrown out the window; dark colours blur the edges of the room, the walls are less clearly marked and can give the illusion of more space. So, if you like dark and moody bathrooms go for it, the trend of ‘No Trends’ is very 2020.
LARGER TILES We are seeing a return to large format tiles. They are chic, elegant and attractive – and best of all, they have less grout and are therefore easier to clean! The lack of grout in your bathroom tiles means that you are less likely to have to worry about mould and mildew growing in between. The subway tile has seen its day.
VINTAGE LOOK Vintage look tiles continue to be popular throughout 2020. With the state of the modern world, there's lots of comfort to be taken when surrounding yourself with the styles of yesteryear. Using encaustic styled period patterns in your bathroom is one way of creating your own slice of vintage, If you’re not into rolltop baths and wooden panelling, these tiles can also work well in a modern style bathroom. Have a look at some of top interior designers’ work, mixing styles and trends well, gives you a look that can stand the test of time.
THE CRITTALL COMEBACK CONTINUES The industrial trend has seen its day because we want a cozier warmer feeling in our lives. A few of the elements of this trend have remained. Crittall style shower doors is one that’s not going anywhere in 2020.
STATEMENT SHOWERS Make your shower stand out. We are seeing a huge trend in using a completely different tile or finish in your shower making it a feature in itself.
PLANTS We are seeing more natural elements in our interiors; sense the mad craze of the fiddle leaf fig every interior designers go to plant for the last few years, house plants have been popping up everywhere, this year they have invaded the bathroom.

THE POWDER ROOM So it’s gone from being known as the downstairs loo to the guest bathroom or in the States the “powder room” - whatever you call it, this tiny room is becoming the place to show off your personality when it comes to decorating. In a time where neutrals are king for interiors, lending to all homes looking similar, this room gives you the opportunity to go a bit crazy! It’s a space where you don’t have to worry about getting tired of a pattern and even if you do it’s not going to cost the earth to change it. Also it’s small enough to use that outrageously expensive wallpaper you love as the space is small and you will probably need only a few rolls. So go for it - show your guests the real you - scary or not!
