WELCOME Welcome to September's home and living, Our little Indian summer last week was amazing helping us to move into winter a little easier after the washout that was August. This month we are looking at making our homes cozy for winter. Whether you love or hate the winter season, personally its my favourite. We all love cosing up in front of a fire or finding a good book or getting lost in Pinterest for a few hours. Making some space for this in your home with a reading nook or just some extra cushions for your sofa can make all the difference in how you feel about winter. If your ask my husband what my favourite things are he will say with out thinking “baskets towels and candles!” so it probably goes someway to explaining why I love winter, I'm also more of a fan of winter clothes I have way too many winter coats. But winter to me is more about family, theres nothing nicer on a rainy Sunday than lighting a fire and watching a movie, with the compulsory popcorn it's worth the half hour discussion (argument) on which film to watch and with two boys its rarely a chickflick. Winter is definitely about appreciating the little things and that's where Hygge comes into it own. Enjoy getting winter-ready. COSY UP for winter
We've all enjoyed our little Indian summer, but its back to the jumpers and boots again! Personally, I love winter. I do love the sun, but can't wait to get back to winter coats and boots, and cosy nights in front of the fire!
If you're like me and love winter or are part of the majority and its your least favourite season we have some genius ideas to make your home a sanctuary during the bleakest months. 1. Add splashes of colour. Irish interiors cry out for colour as our light can be grey even during the summer and more so in winter. Our interiors need some vibrant colour to lift our mood. You don't have to go out and paint all the walls bright pink! Brightly patterned cushions, a throw or some art can instantly brighten your space even without the sun. 2. C omfortable cushions. It's not just about what your cushions look like, it's whats inside which can determine how comfortable they are going to be to curl up with use good quality inserts. Personally I love feather as its warm and envelops you. If you prefer a structured look to your cushions go a size bigger for the insert, as this will help the cushion keep its shape.
3. O utside in. Just because your garden has gone into hiatus doesn't mean you cant have some green to look at. A few easy-care house plants can instantly add vibrancy to your home. One study even suggests that having indoor plants can reduce psychological stress, but I think this is only true if you have green fingers! If not there are some great faux versions out there at the moment. 4. Light a fire, but only if you have a fireplace! With new easily installed gas and electric fires even homes without a chimney can have the benefit of a warming fire. 5. Add more lighting. Instead of overhead lights add some lamps. A freestanding lamp in the corner of a room, or table lamps dotted around, add atmosphere and coziness to your home. 6. The most flattering light of all is candle light, I’m a huge fan of candles along with adding ambiance to
a room. If you choose your favourite scented candle it lifts your mood. Go for a good soy candle with natural oils. 7. Create a reading nook. Carve out a specific space for some reading time, and better still make it a technology free space! We are all guilty of reaching for our phone instead of a book these days so a space which is technology free is a great idea. 8. Seasonal storage. If you don't like a layered or cluttered look set aside a basket to hold some cushions and throws. This will keep you rooms looking stylish, but comfort close at hand. 9. A footstool. We've seen them in every magazine but we rarely use these for what the name suggest. If your home is neutral or even if it's not, footstools are a great way to add colour and texture and warmth for those winter months. Don't forget to kick your shoes off and use it!
CREATE A COZY
READING NOOK
Now that we all have computers in our hands 24/7, we rarely take the time to sit down in a sunny little corner, sip a cup of tea, and crack the spine on a good book. But isn’t it a nice thought? Creating our very own reading nook is a simple idea but helps us find a space where maybe we think twice about picking up the phone. What you need: 1. First is a chair, any chair will work once is comfortable, fits in the space and works with the aesthetic of your home, be that modern or traditional or any style in between. 2. A footstool. There are a huge amount of them out there, some very reasonable options. Remember it doesn't have to match your chair, just be a
good height for your feet to rest comfortably. 3. Lighting, I love a slim floor standing lamp but if you have room for a side table a table lamp will work as well. It's just a matter of personal choice and what fits in your space. 4. Side table. Think out side the box or even a box will do! A footstool or a small round table is perfect for a corner space. It doesn't take up a lot of space, all you need is room for your book/Kindle and a warm drink.

hygge
[hue-gah]
Hygge ( hue-gah) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. This Danish concept cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. On a snow day, you've experienced hygge without even knowing it. We've all heard of Hygge and it sounds like a lovely concept, but have we ever really used it in our everyday lives? Hygge is not about buying candles and throws, (but I do love an excuse to buy a candle). It is about being more thoughtful in our everyday lives. We all have a little FOMO (fear of missing out) and social media feeds this, are we happy just being? Creating a cosy environment in our
homes and taking a break to enjoy it once in a while recharging our batteries, helps your mind body and soul. Your home and its contents are about you not Pinterest, a magazine, or what someone on Instagram got gifted! Use these to figure out your taste, but invest in what you like, not a trend. We all need a space that's good for our soul and not anybody else's.
