Welcome
T
hank you to Noelle and the Advertiser team for giving me the opportunity to fill in for this month. This is an exciting new challenge to express my thoughts on interior design. The month of July is fulfilled with movement, constant coming and going, with summer barbecues, races and holidays so naturally this month’s Home & Living theme is the hallway. Our hallways get a lot of use because it is through them we enter and leave our homes. Hallways are the main areas for “meet and greet” and this is why they are so important. First impressions tend to last, however right or wrong they may be. It is a good idea to treat your hallway as a gallery, so a bit of visual drama goes a long way. It helps to stimulate the mind and leaves the person with a remarkable memory of one’s home. There are many tricks you can use in achieving this. The boot rooms and entranceways are also a big part of the hallway and have their own little story to tell. You will find a few ideas here on how to bring them to life. There is a small section on utilities also. This is because a good part of the population actually uses their utility as the main entrance. And the beloved downstairs toilet, what a wonderful space to add character! Designing an interior is a journey; it evolves gradually and should always go with the characteristics of the people living there. This gives the feelgood factor, after all.

Notebook Have fun with texture
1
VARY the rhythm of different textures such as wool, sisal and cord. Combine different materials in order to give more character to the scheme. A sisal rug could be trimmed with a linen border. My current interior crush is flooring by “Creatuft”. It is a fabulous collection and is available at Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre. Think about a variety of combinations such as metal and silk, bright coloured glass combined with mirrors or wool with wood. Corcoran’s in Killarney has a selection of elegant lamps. You may vary the colours within the same colour families for a subtle look. The more eccentric option would be to have an uneven number from different colour families such as plum, mustard and teal. A mustard wall with a plum colour rug and teal chair would form an edgy hallway. The classic palette would be rose gold, mahogany and black. Picture a dark wood console table with rose gold and black picture frames. Earthy neutrals work best with wooden floorings and tiles. A polished concrete floor tends to look better with more vibrant coloured rugs. Play with multiple materials, layer them and mix them up. This gives more depth to the interior and makes it feel more luxurious.

The Family Home with the Feelgood Factor
T
HIS is a child-friendly family home with a soft earthy palette running through the building. There is a grey undertone in all the paint colours and that’s why there is a nice “flow” from room to room, pulling the house’s look together. Every area is divided up by feeling. An off-white woodwork runs throughout and brings a sense of unity by connecting all the rooms. The kitchen is decorated with calming yellow-green and stone-grey units by Maurice Prendiville Kitchens in Killarney. The countertop is kept pale and this lifts the greige floor tile. The blue grey in the hallway makes the hall airy. A funky rug from Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre warms up the tiles. There is a special corner for kids where they can draw on the walls. The blackboard paint is a wonderful solution to most parents’ nightmare. The children's bedrooms are as bright and colourful as their personalities. The wall mural brings character and makes the room playful and child-friendly. The turquoise girl’s bedroom feels cheerful, gives a light-hearted look and goes with the mountain of toys. The off-white blinds, by Medor Blinds, Killarney, help to open up the windows. This brings an element of freshness to the overall scheme. The sitting room appears inviting with its comfortable couch and rich warm grey-green wall colour. The smoky navy master bedroom has a sophisticated ambience. Another trick is that the flooring has the same colouring throughout – this helps to make the building spacious. The colourful family home has a timeless quality and a feelgood factor.

Downstairs Bathroom:
D
The New Talking Point
OWNSTAIRS bathrooms can often be an afterthought. Take a look to abroad for some inspiration. I remember being on holiday in Italy and discovering the Italians treat their bathrooms as an extra room. I thought it is a clever idea to make the otherwise lonely downstairs bathroom a talking point instead. Place a chair, few books or other unusual elements in this room, or explore your options with colour. A smoky green such as ‘’Livid No 263’’ by Little Greene would look unusual. If you would like to go a step bolder, theme it with textured wallpaper. Little Greene paint is available in Corcoran’s, Killarney.

Trend: Glamour TALKING about interior trends for 2017 we cannot pass the metallic wallpapers. Shiny surfaces, metallic paint and glittery wallpaper are all the rage. Colours to watch out for are burnt orange, smoky blues and muddy greens. Rose gold and copper are the new hot metals to look out for. You have to see it to believe it. Metallic surfaces tend to bounce light in the room and therefore give a brighter ambience. Pop into any of the local stores that do wallpaper such as Hal-Lou and Mylestone Interiors in Killarney. I like the quote by Illamasqua Makeup, “Dream big, sparkle more, shine bright!” It relates to current interior trend of all things glamorous. An eclectic mix of glitzy items would give an instant update. Think of glitzy, shiny and glossy surfaces. Slick and sparkling is the way to go!
Fresh Look At Boot Rooms
B
OOT ROOMS are popular among busy families. This is the room where the armour to go with various weather conditions is being kept. Choose a colour that will lift spirits and give the room a light and airy feel. Blush pink is on trend this year. Have a look at ‘’Mid Jasper’’ by Dulux Signature Range. It works well with grey, black and navy giving the boot room a more sophisticated feel. An old bench or trunk would be functional for sitting down and changing shoes. Lot’s Furniture in Tralee has some pieces that would be worth considering.

The Glamorous
Gallery
T
HERE can often be a problem with lack of natural light in the hallways. Even if you have got a large cathedral window, there are still some parts that are dark and gloomy. It is best to work with light not against it. This is something we do naturally when it comes to dressing ourselves. We pick the clothes to suit the body and skin tone first. The same type of thinking that can be applied to decorating the hallway. Table lamps and wall lights are a great way to create a welcoming feeling in the hallway. The lamps can be left on once the evening time comes. We are programmed to turn the lights off from an early age. Believe it or not, it is international. The table lamps help to create a pleasant ambience. The clever way is to have lights on sensors. This would give the best of both worlds. Energy is being saved and darkness does not hit you while passing through hallway. If the sensors are not an option use low-energy bulbs. There is a common tendency to paint the hallway with a pale colour. This can appear dull and draining, because there is no light. Go for a richer wall colour instead such as “0561 Indian Hills”. Most importantly the hallway lighting is crucial. The Tradekit in Killarney has a lovely selection that can be ordered in, it would be a good idea to talk to lighting consultants. Wall washers are good too for a pleasant ambience. Mix various light sources by placing some table lamps on a side table. Corcoran’s Furniture in Killarney has a good selection. Another trick is to treat your hallway as a gallery where you can hang paintings, pictures and photographs. It is best to stagger the frames, look up Pinterest or Instagram for some ideas. It is kind of like cooking, let it happen. It’s not always a good practice to follow the recipe exactly, relax into it. The end result will be more creative.

Utilities: Stuff of Life Possibilities 1081 Endless IT TOOK me a while to get my head around it: Why is it that no one seems to ring the doorbell? Instead people arrive at the back door of the house or the side entrance. The explanation goes like this: ‘‘It is only the people we do not know that come in by the front doors.” Eureka! The utility has an important role to play in Irish homes. This is where all that we need to make our lives more comfortable is kept. Pick a bold wall colour to go with that lively feeling in the utility. ‘’1081 Endless Possibilities’’ by Colourtrend is a red-orange. This vibrant hue is associated with love, energy and wisdom according to colour psychology. Little quotes on the walls can shift the mood too. Quirky hooks, storage boxes and colourful baskets will make life much easier. I have recently come across quite unusual pieces in Lot’s Furniture, Tralee.
