TechTalk with Chris Reina THE GOOGLE Chris Reina gives an insight into a device that is part of almost everyone’s daily life Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech. support with suggestions. This week I’m going to talk about Google Search Tricks. Have you ever done a search only to not find what you’re looking for? Google is intelligent, but sometimes when you look for a phrase or piece of information we get unexpected results. Using different “Phrases”, we can ask Google to return very specific results. The following list will give you a few tricks. Quotes Search for a phrase in quotes will return that exact phrase in that order - rather than just random results. (e.g. “Mexican hot and spicy” rather than mexican hot and spicy) News Archives Google has archived news back as far as the mid - 1880’s (Yes

“18”!) Just go to: news.google. com/ newspapers. You can search for anything and it will return the original article. DEFINE: Google can act as a dictionary. Simply type “define:” before your term and it will return the definition of your word. Images Ever wanted to look up similar images? Just go to: images.google. com - then click on the “camera” icon in the search field. Here you can either upload an image from your computer or paste a link from another website. It’s like magic. Keywords If you want to search a single website for just keywords - use this phraseology: <searchword> site:<websitename> (e.g.. nachos site:recipe.com) This will search www.recipe.com for all mentions of nachos. Which is never a bad thing. Happy searching!

LIEBHERR LAUNCHES ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME LIEBHERR CONTAINER CRANES LTD is one of the world’s leading suppliers of state-of-the-art container handling equipment. The technical complexity of the products manufactured by Liebherr in its Killarney plant is continually increasing and the skill levels required to design and manufacture such equipment requires the highest levels of expertise in all disciplines. This necessitates significant investment in training and development of staff. As part of Engineers Week 2017, Liebherr has announced a new engineering scholarship programme, commencing in September 2017. The programme will provide a unique opportunity for Leaving Certificate students in the Kerry area, to gain a third-level qualification in an engineering

course of their choice from the following engineering disciplines, electrical, mechanical, structural, automation or mechatronics. Successful applicants will complete their CAO application as normal, and following an interview process at Liebherr the chosen candidates will benefit from an all course fees paid programme for the selected college. The additional benefit of being able to complete work experience during summer vacation and college placements throughout the course term will also be part of the learning experience. Upon completion, a graduate role in the company is assured. Liebherr’s technical director, Charlie McCarthy, said: “The tradition of both a practical and

theoretical education is synonymous with Liebherr. The students will work in engineering departments throughout the company, under the guidance of senior engineers where they will benefit from seeing the application of engineering principles on modern high tech world class products.” As part of the launch, Liebherr will hold an engineering scholarship open evening on Wednesday, March 15, from 5.30pm to provide information to interested students who are doing their Leaving Certificate in 2017 together with their parents and teachers. Those who wish to attend the open evening should register on or before 1pm on Monday, March 13, by sending an email to gradrecruit.lcc@liebherr.com

Lambeth Walk set to be all the rage in Killarney THEY first presented the musical Me and My Girl almost two decades ago and now the talented Killarney Musical Society members are poised to repeat its success. The musical comedy, which is set in England during the 1930s, will grace the INEC stage from Wednesday, March 22, to Friday, March 24. Well-known songs from the show include the romantic “Leaning on a Lamppost,” the ever-catchy and toe-tapping “Lambeth Walk” and the title song “Me and My Girl.” The cast of 40 includes mother and daughter Linda and Éilise O’Donoghue and mother and son Irene Hurley and Odran Downey. The story centres on Bill Snibson, a somewhat unrefined cockney gentleman who learns he is the heir to the Earl of Hareford. However, Bill’s inheritance depends on his ability to adapt to this new and unfamiliar world, which may not include his love, Sally Smith. “We are delighted to have such a strong leading line as well as a very talented chorus,” said Killarney Musical Society PRO Ann Ivory. Ian McGuirk will play the role of Bill with Lily MacMonagle taking on the part of Sally. Sir John will be played by Gerry Adams, Derek O’Leary will play Mr Parchester and Pádraig Creedon and Rory Ward will play the parts of Charles and Gerald Bolingbroke respectively. Orna Cleary O’Shea will portray the Duchess while Emir Guihan takes on the role of Lady Jacqueline. Killarney Musical Society previously

performed “Me and My Girl” in the Áras Phádraig 19 years ago. “We are very excited to bring the show to the INEC stage where we hope to emulate the success of the 1998 production,” said Ann. “Many current members also performed in the original production including Gerry Adams, Orna Cleary O’Shea, Peter Cook, Derek O’Leary and Mike Maloney.” In 1998 Aileen Ferris Rohan undertook the

role of Lady Jacqueline. “Aileen was involved in numerous productions with the Society from 1992 to 2013. Last year, Aileen sadly passed away and this production is dedicated to her memory,” said Ann. The production team includes Killian Collins (director), John O’Brien (musical director) and Stephen Cullinane O’Regan (choreographer). DATE ANNOUNCED FOR COUNTY CLEAN-UP DAY

Burglar caught with loot in Killarney IT’S time to sweep into action as the sixth annual County Clean-up, facilitated by KWD Recycling, is nearly upon us. Volunteers are being called upon again to come out in force on Saturday, April 8, to get involved in what has proven in the past to be a great community day out, bringing neighbours and friends together working towards the same goal of keeping our roads clean, while also highlighting the issue of littering. GAA star Colm Cooper has again generously taken time out of his busy schedule to come on board

12

Killarney Advertiser 10.03.17

to promote this worthwhile event and help get the message across to everyone to get involved and keep our roads litter free and pristine, so that visiting tourists and locals alike can see the true beauty of our country side without unsightly litter strewn on the sides of the roads. This year it is also being extended, and adapted by our neighbours in West Cork where KWD Recycling will also facilitate the clean-up. “This is great news and it will allow everyone visiting or living along this side of the country to enjoy our unspoiled

beauty,” said Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling. “We are hoping to have as many groups/communities/individuals as possible out on the day to help create awareness and in turn help prevent people littering going forward.” If you would like to get involved, register by logging onto www. countycleanup.com. “It does not matter if it’s one person or a group of people, if it’s for half an hour or more, every piece of litter picked makes a difference,” said Noel. “Show pride and keep our county roads litter free.”

SHARP-EYED Gardaí nabbed a young man in the Ballycasheen area in the early hours of Wednesday after he burgled a house in nearby Woodlawn which was occupied. Diligent Gardaí were searching the area in response to the incident when they intercepted the thief in possession of a laptop and other electronic goods. The man, in his 20s, was promptly arrested and will appear in court. The homeowners were delighted to get their property back and were most grateful to the Gardaí. Gardaí are warning homeowners to properly secure their properties at nighttime.

KILLARNEY WELCOMES

Garda James McCarthy and Garda Karen Sheehan.

ITS TWO NEWEST GARDA RECRUITS BY EVE KELLIHER TWO new faces on the beat in Killarney have proved a welcome addition to the town. Garda Karen Sheehan and Garda James McCarthy joined the team at Killarney Garda Station in February. This is the first time in eight years that Killarney has been allocated new probationary gardaí from The Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary. Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, Sergeant in Charge, Killarney Garda Station, extended a warm welcome to the new recruits. “On behalf of the station I would like to welcome them both. They will be a great asset to the team,” Sergeant O’Connell told Killarney Advertiser. The new officers will get to hone a variety of policing skills in the town, added Sergeant O’Connell. Garda Sheehan, from Doneraile, Co Cork, and Garda McCarthy, from Carrigtwohill, Co Cork, said they have always wanted to join An Garda Siochána. They graduated in Templemore on February 6 and were then posted to Killarney. “We are delighted to be here, Killarney is such a lovely town,” said Garda McCarthy. Garda Sheehan added: “Everyone we have met has been so welcoming since we arrived in Killarney, it’s been fantastic.”

THE Healy-Raes are embarking on a world tour of Kerry in a new play written by Killarney storyteller and actor Ray O’Sullivan. “The Rise and Rise of the Healy-Raes” is the hilarious and sometimes-poignant story of bachelor brothers Densey and PJ Doona who appear timelocked in a life of loneliness and celibacy in their small family farm in Kerry. But foreign women, love, elections and politics combine to change their lives, with the well-oiled Healy-Rae machine at the centre of the miraculous transformation. The play is directed by Aidan O’Connor, journalist and writer/

director of the hit drama ‘Patrick’ which had a phenomenal run in Kerry last year. “The story of the Healy-Raes is one which has been told in many ways over the years, but this is the first time it’s being played out on stage,” Ray O’Sullivan said. The play will be staged in Beaufort Community Centre on Saturday, March 11, Castleisland Ivy Leaf on March 25, Kenmare Carnegie Centre on April 1, Scartaglen Heritage Centre on April 8, Killarney INEC Acoustic Club on April 13 and St John’s Theatre, Listowel, on April 20. Tickets available at the door or by calling 087-2279657.

Travellers to organise St Patrick’s Day protest MEMBERS of the Traveller community have said they will protest in Killarney on St Patrick’s Day against what they say is widespread discrimination. At a meeting in Ballyspillane Community Centre, members of the community gave their support for the protest which would coincide with Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. Killarney Chamber of Tourism

& Commerce says it does not, and will not, condone any form of restriction for any social group nor discrimination of any sort. It said it had not been aware of any protest planned by members of the Traveller community in Killarney and pointed out that this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade does not exclude anyone and has diversity as its theme.

Gobnaits have ‘notions’ ahead of St Patrick’s Day THE concept of “notions” or “having notions” is something uniquely Irish and the unofficial mascots of the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney, the quartet of characters all answering to the name of “Gobnait”, have been extolling the virtues of “notions” all week. In Killarney’s own take on Keeping up with the Kardashians, the Gobnaits have been getting up to all sorts of antics on the streets of the town. They were spotted this week choosing flowers outside White Heather on Plunkett Street, or Henn Street as they like to remember it. Another Gobnait stalled outside a sign for massages, wondering whether her weary legs would benefit. “Yerrah,” said the other Gobnaits, “Don’t be talking, a drop of poitín would do the job.” They are also photographed by a phone box as they have “notions” about phoning Radio Kerry in a bid to win its daily quiz.

DERMOT & DAVE LOOKING FORWARD TO THEIR

KILLARNEY DATE

Eve Kelliher talks to Today FM duo Dermot & Dave ahead of their performance in the INEC, Killarney, on March 16 CONSIDERING the first joke he ever wrote, at the tender age of five, was a Kerryman joke, Dermot Whelan is feeling somewhat nostalgic as he packs his suitcase for his gig in Killarney’s INEC next week. The other half of the hilarious Today FM duo Dermot & Dave, Dave Moore, is also excited about heading for the Kingdom where they will take centre stage with their “Ah Sure Lookit” show in the INEC on March 16. “My mother is a cousin of the Kerry footballer Mikey Sheehy and there are pictures of me as a three-year-old being carried around by the Bomber Liston and Mikey,” he said. Today FM’s lunchtime presenters Dermot & Dave debuted their comedy show at the

Cork Comedy Festival in September of this year and the following month at the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway. Both shows sold out in record time. This is the first time the pair has taken to the stage for a comedy gig but they’re well used to each other, having worked together in radio for over 12 years. The tour will take in almost every corner of Ireland with 15 dates scheduled. Asked what people can expect from their stand-up show, Dermot said: “Imagine a bonkers radio show that grows legs and arms and a head and starts firing out craic and waving its arms like an angry King Kong in that movie. Not even close.” Dave added: “It’s all our listeners’ favourite characters, stand-up, improvised comedy, music and an interactive gardening segment – what’s not to love?!” Tickets, €29, are on sale from www. inec.ie, www.ticketmaster.ie or from the INEC Box Office on 064-6671555.

VIEWS ON THE NEWS

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her new monthly column

The Colour Purple

JUST what is involved in winning and in retaining the Purple Flag for Killarney was succinctly outlined by Killarney accountant Michael Culloty at a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee, the county-wide policing body of senior gardaí, community representatives and local and national politicians which meets in Tralee a few times a year. Michael, a long-standing member of the Killarney Purple Flag committee told how there were only 14 Purple Flags in Ireland. The international accreditation – UK and Ireland – is awarded to a clean and safe environment between the hours of 5pm and 5am. That is from the last hour of shopping and taking in the restaurants and bars and nightclubs. The town during these hours must have “broad appeal” and geographically too the Killarney bid took a broad sweep and extended to the national park, and to the INEC, he said. The town must be enjoyable for residents, tourists, and people working in the town, Michael outlined. “You see so much of the town between 5pm and 5am. You very suddenly realise lighting in the Glebe car park is atrocious, bulbs are blown in the lanes; a dustbin has been taken away to be repaired and not replaced, ” he outlined. Those present described the accolade as the “gold standard” and a remarkable achievement for Killarney, and paid compliment to the content and style of the address. Killarney people at their best tend to nail their colours to the mast, and leave the comfort speak for the tourists who don’t need to be bothered with too much controversy or detail. Michael Culloty was no exception. The town council as a body and its executive “had bought hugely” into the effort; no other town in Ireland had the purple flag at the time, he told them. The statistical requirements, the coordination, “the chasing of all of us” was by the Killarney Town Council official assigned to the role. He doubted very much if the new municipal body would do this. “I don’t know if it would have that strength,” Michael said frankly. And he is completely right – the go-to person, who was parking his van awkwardly, would be known, the fellow or girl not playing ball with dustbins would be known and approached nicely. And there would be no umbrage because everyone rows in together in Killarney.

Killarney Advertiser 10.03.17

TOWN COUNCIL AND TOWN SPEAK THE great tragedy of the late town council was its lack of gender balance (no woman) and the glaring lack of the new Irish at any level of authority. Only when there were two women – Sheilas Casey and Dixon – was the 20-year battle for a playground won. The municipal body that has replaced it is hardly any better in the gender/new Irish model. But it has also the distinct disadvantage for Killarney because there are so few Killarney people on the thing. This has real repercussions. There is a literal lack of voice there. Michael Culloty’s clear and precise address in straightforward but at times colourful English reminded me of how rarely I hear Killarney-speak anymore at so-called authority meetings. Not everyone at old council meetings could avoid waffle, but many did. Now even on the local radio too many of those who represent the town at political level local and national cannot speak Killarney. I enjoy as much as anyone the rich tones of Kilgarvan, Scartaglen, Ballyhar, and Castleisland and the posh Rathmore accent. But this is not how English is spoken in Killarney – growing up in a tourist town we were all taught and warned about how we spoke English. And while most of us could “dis, da, dese and dose” with the best of Cork city, we had a particular aversion to “shtop, shtay, and shtand”, and “hoy there” and “howrru” …the rich rolling tongue that distinguishes the outer regions. It is an ironic thing: Killarney English is and was as distinct as the English one hears in Dingle. Dingle people are very particular about how they speak English; they do so clearly and exactly and with grammatical correctness because in Dingle, the two languages, the Irish and the English, are separate and apart. It is the same with Killarney – there is an awareness of language and how it is spoken. And it is a great shame that the peculiar Killarney voice, which is not without its purple passages, is being lost in the meeting halls – and on the airways.

GRAVEYARD ISSUE THE Killarney Graveyard: It must surely be a fairly simple question to answer. Will the graveyard in the grazing land at Knockeenduff Killarney be con-

secrated, or won’t it? So far the council officials who may push this thing through with the assistance of a majority of “Killarney” councillors have refused to answer the question. These things matter still in Ireland, especially at a time of death. Here the landscape can still have an otherworldly meaning – fairy fort, consecrated and of course non-consecrated such as Cillíns for unbabptised etc…

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IT IS of course international Women’s Day week. A week to celebrate the contribution of women to the workforce and the struggle for women’s rights. But it is a bad week for Mother Ireland whose idea of women has clearly been Eve or Mary or the Spéirbhean. (We have statues to two of these in Killarney, though none to any real woman.) For some uniquely Irish reason, the State with its reins barely on the chariot of myth and Catholicism could never grasp the complexity of women: they could never acknowledge that women were no different from men, only they were women. For years they were churching them, covering them, hiding them and clearly too flailing them. The attack on women began with the foundation of the State by brushing revolutionary women out of paintings 1916. Women in the new mono-religious Republic were "stripped" not only of their independence, and their right to work, but their sexuality. It took Nell McCafferty and others to board a train to Belfast to get contraception. The same referendum to state the obvious that a foetus cannot be equal to an adult woman is being rerun in the second time in just over 30 years; a woman was allowed die in Galway two years ago because of this “belief” and the fact you can get 14 years for assisting an abortion; there is the “lock up your daughters” movement against the cervical cancer inoculation (mainly by men); there is still no proper childminding structures to allow women work. And this week we see entombed in Tuam any delusions we ever held about equal treatment for women in this country - and especially for poor women and their babies. It is not just the nuns and the priests and the doctors who visited these homes, who should bear the shame of this: it is all of us, women too. And it is high time we examined the picture of women we hold in this unholy trinity of temptress, saint or goddess.

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 17:1-9: The transfiguration experience was one that, for Jesus, clarified his relationship with his Father and strengthened him for the future. It was also a moment of deep revelation for the disciples. What have been the experiences, the moments of insight, which for you have clarified your sense of who you are, and what is your relationship with God? On the mountain the disciples saw Jesus in a new way. His appearance changed. Sometimes in friendship there are moments of sharing in which we get to know a friend in a new and deeper way. Have you had that experience in human friendship, or in your relationship with Jesus and God. Recall when that happened, and what it was like for you. The clear vision of Jesus with Moses and Elijah was followed by a frightening experience of being in a cloud and it was in the midst of the cloud that the disciples were instructed ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him’. Have you had the experience of learning the truth about life and about your relationship with God from moments of confusion as well as from times of special joy? After their special experience the disciples came down the mountain again. We cannot live each day at the level of special spiritual experiences, but the memory of them can strengthen us in difficult times. What memories encourage you in time of trouble? John Byrne, OSA, Veritas

MUSINGS

“SIX days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John…” Lent is indeed how God draws us home as individuals, but it is also a very communal journey. We never journey alone, no matter how lonely we may feel. We are always journeying together. If we can experience our journey in communion with others, it makes it so much clearer that we are on a journey together. When we can share our experiences with a close friend or our worship community, we can enjoy support that allows grace to flourish. Let us pray for one another on this journey, especially for those who need and desire a change of heart on this pilgrimage to Easter joy. Choosing and acting Lent are so important because we are body-persons. We experience things with our senses, relish them with our imaginations and we share in God’s own creative and loving activity when our hearts and hands work together for and with others. St Patrick’s Festival Killarney PARADE DIARY

ALL HANDS ON DECK AS COMMUNITIES PREPARE FOR PARADE The newly appointed creative director of the St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney, Fiona Crowley gives an overview of the lead-up to the annual event SO, THE St Patrick's Day parade in any town or village in Ireland on March 17 is always a red-letter day for spectators, participants and organisers alike and in general anyone with a bit of green blood in them! The parade couldn't be a success without the hard work of so many volunteers but equally it couldn't be a success unless there were groups, clubs and organisations willing to give up their time to participate in the parade. One such group is Raheen NS which is a two-teacher school with a population of 42 students. But don't be fooled into thinking that this small school is small in ideas and accolades. Raheen NS has one a prize in the parade each year they have entered since 2008 and

indeed in 2013 they coveted the prestigious prize of best overall prize. An impressive list for a small school! The Patrick’s Day parade is one of the highlights of the school year, according to Joan Warren, a member of the parents association in the school. "Preparation for the parade is a whole-school project with all hands on deck!” said Joan. “We are very excited about our interpretation of this year’s theme Diversity. We cannot divulge what we have planned but suffice to say you won't be disappointed!" With people like Joan and her team as well as the hundreds of other participants in the St Patrick's Day parade we can be rest assured that the parade will be a success in its primary goal. That goal is

Soak the porcini mushrooms in hot water for 10 minutes, then drain well. Heat the oil in a large, heavy based saucepan and add the onion and garlic. Fry over a gentle heat for two-three minutes, until softened. Add the chestnut mushrooms and fry for a further two-three minutes, until browned. Stir in the rice and coat in the oil. Pour in the wine and simmer, stirring, until the liquid has been absorbed. Add a ladleful of the stock and simmer, stirring again, until the liquid has been absorbed. Continue adding the stock in this way, until all the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is plump and tender. Roughly chop the soaked porcini mushrooms and stir into the risotto, along with the parsley, butter and salt and pepper. Serve with freshly grated Parmesan.

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley is currently in the thick of organising her next concert

I AM LOOKING forward to staging my concert An Irish Heart, which which will take place at 8pm at The Malton Hotel Killarney on St Patrick's Day. Certain aspects of the planning are stressful; promotion, music organisation, financial planning and, of course, the fear that no one will come! I wanted to create a concert that includes music that is very varied and includes some older, well-loved songs as well as some more contemporary Irish music. The most difficult aspect for me has been the narrowing down of songs choices as there are so many great Irish songs out there. One thing that has really struck me during all this is the child-like giddiness I am feeling at the thought of singing a concert full of my favourite songs! When I was a child I would visualise my-

self on a stage singing songs that really meant something to me. My poor friends and family were subjected to being actors and singers in my many “productions” where I brought my “visions” to life! In my head there was a huge audience so my scripting had to be just perfect. As an adult I can now bring my dreams to life and actually perform these songs for an audience. Of course it is a bit scary, but anything worthwhile usually is. One promise I have made to myself is to be true to that young girl who had such clear dreams, huge passion and wonderful ideas. I forgot her for a while. Take my advice and tap back into those days when you too imagined greatness for yourself, it just might change your life...“You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one”.. • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

Rebel Kerry is edited by Kerryman journalist Simon Brouder and features contributions from wellknown historians including Ryle Dwyer and Helen O’Keeffe. Mum’s the word for top new beauty treats BY EVE KELLIHER A BOTTLE of perfume is always a welcome gift on Mother’s Day. If your mum likes to stay ahead of the posse then look no further than Black Opium Floral Shock, which has just landed on beauty counters like a dramatic bouquet of flowers. It is priced at €81 for 50ml.

Feelgood fragrance THIRTY years ago, Clarins created the very first treatment fragrance that combined both the aromas and skincare benefits of plants. It was christened “Eau Dynamisante”. These gorgeous scents are a mood boost in a bottle, combining aromatherapy and phytotherapy. Eau Dynamisante’s pioneering concept has led to the creation of two other fragrances: Eau Ressourçante and, my personal favourite, Eau des Jardins. And just in time for Mother’s Day, they are available in limited edition 30th anniversary bottles, in 100ml and 30ml sizes.

Lip service A FRESH new lip colour will always be a welcome addition to your mum’s handbag, so check out Bobbi Brown’s Art Stick Liquid Lip. An art supply-inspired modern take on liquid lipstick, it is creamy and super-pigmented. This squeezable colour stick provides a bold, full coverage look with a luxurious, ultralightweight feel and moisturising formula.

HARRY’S GAME AS TALENT WINS THE DAY FOR KENMARE MUSICIAN AN INCREDIBLY talented young Kenmare violinist struck a chord with classical music fans in Killarney at the weekend as Harry O’Connor was crowned Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year. The 17th annual competition unfolded over two days in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service centre at Fairhill on Friday and Saturday and an extraordinarily entertaining concert in the INEC Acoustic Club proved a fitting finale. The MC on the night was Ailish Walsh and the adjudicators were Pat O’Keeffe and Mary Hegarty. “Patrons and guests were treated to an amazing display of talent, with voice, violin, cello and harp fighting it out in a classical music version of Battle of The Bands,” said Killarney Rotary president Angela O’Connor. Of course, there had to be a winner and Harry O'Connor’s virtuoso performance of Mozart’s Violin Sonata No 21 held the judges and audience

spellbound. Laura Hynes, a fourth-ear student at Gaelcholáiste Chiarrai, won second prize, with harpist Emily Sullivan, Lauragh, being presented with the award for third place.

The runners-up were Katarina Roberts from Castlegregory on the cello, Eva Buckley from Muckross, Killarney, on the piano and Alan McLoughlin, voice, from Tralee. The winner of the James Gleeson Memorial Award, which was presented on the night by Killarney Rotarian Barry Murphy, on behalf of Grace and Eoin Gleeson, was Orlaith O'Sullivan, daughter of Mary and Diarmuid O'Sullivan from Killorglin. Last year’s winner, Edel Crowley, also gave a performance on the night. Killarney Rotary president Angela welcomed Killarney Advertiser as media partner and sponsor again this year. "If we in Killarney Rotary Club through our Young Musician competition foster in our young competitors a love of music then as far as we are concerned the competition will have been a success. I would like to thank our members Barry Murphy and Sean Treacy for their foresight in setting up this competition 17 years ago."

IF ONLY the walls could speak in Muckross House, there are so many tales they could tell. Lucky for us that the Killarney visitor attraction has always surrounded itself with those who could bring its history to life in entertaining fashion. Muckross House is staffed by an excellent team of guides and information officers. In fact, an hour’s tour around the stately home will always leave you wanting more, as there are stories within stories at every turn in the corridor and behind every object in every room. That’s why it was wonderful to see the younger generation being introduced to the heritage literally on their doorsteps.

Pupils from Holy Cross Mercy National School and Gaelscoil Faithleann enjoyed a bird’s eye view of history during an educational tour of Muckross House organised by its trustees. And illuminating those stories were none other than Queen Victoria (Liz Ryan), the first owner of the house, Henry Arthur Herbert (Don Rohan) and his cook (Patricia McSherry). Queen Victoria, along with her husband Prince Albert, two of their children and their entourage, visited Muckross House in 1861. Liz, Don and Patricia are all active members of Dóchas Drama Group and are no strangers to reenacting scenes from Muckross House’s illustrious past.

TOURISM IRELAND'S 2017 series of ‘Jump into Ireland’ sales blitzes across the United States kicked off this week – taking in the key cities of Washington DC, Atlanta (Georgia) and Boca Raton (Florida). A delegation of 17 tourism companies from Ireland and the United States – including the Parknasilla Resort & Spa, Park Hotel Kenmare & SÁMAS Spa and Experience Ireland Golf & Travel (based in Killarney) – will undertake a busy schedule of B2B events in each city, showcasing the island of Ireland via a 60-minute TV show format,

as well as networking sessions with travel and lifestyle journalists. Tourism Ireland’s sales blitz follows last week’s announcement by Norwegian of new flights to the island of Ireland from New York (Stewart International Airport) and Providence (Rhode Island), which means that the total number of transatlantic airline seats this summer will be 60,000, from 20 North American gateways to the island of Ireland – that’s 10,000 additional seats compared to summer 2016. In 2016, we welcomed

a record 1.6 million North American visitors to the island of Ireland. Looking to the year ahead, we are confident that our strategy – combined with more airline seats than ever before from the US, a strong dollar, as well as the strength and competitiveness of the vacation experience right around the island of Ireland – will deliver further growth. Working with youth to make a difference LAST Friday, March 3, Catherine Byrne, Minister of State for Communities and National Drugs Strategy, visited Kerry to explore the work of Kerry Life Skills. Kerry Life Skills has been working with young people in primary and post-primary schools throughout Kerry for over 13 years. On this occasion, she sat in on a workshop in Kerry Life Skills mobile classroom with sixth class boys from ‘The Mon’ primary school Killarney. Minister Byrne heard from the boys about their fun experiences of working in the mobile classroom for the past eight years. Afterwards there was an opportunity for Minister Byrne to meet the sixth class in their classroom where they asked her questions about her own work. Minister Byrne also met with Colm O Súilleabháin, principal of The Monastery and Sean Coffey, principal of St Brendan’s College, Killarney. They outlined the continuity provided by the Kerry Life Skills service. Kerry Life Skills is also working with Colm McEvoy, CEO of Kerry Education and Training Board, with whom Kerry Life Skills are exploring a partnership. On a rainy Friday in Killarney, Minster Byrne left with a very clear picture of a community engaging with their youth and working together to make a difference. The Provocateur WE WANT OUR WATER REFUNDS HOUSEHOLDERS who obeyed the law and paid their water bills should get their money back. The calls for refunds are putting pressure on Fine Gael with even most of its own supporters wanting refunds. On Tuesday it emerged that the Dáil committee set up to solve the crux was itself so divided that it could only produce a draft report on the future of water charges. Members have been given an extra month to provide a complete report. Granted, there’s a bit of political game-playing going on. Fine Gael’s official stance is that they are determined to uphold their original position and pursue all nonpayers. The party’s insistence that noncompliant homes should be pursued would mean many supporters who paid up would not get the €325 refund. But judging by the debates in the Dáil over the past week there is room for manoeuvre, should concessions flow into play. All those law-abiding citizens who paid up in the first place should be refunded. A survey on the matter carried out by the Daily Mail during the week found that most people called for a refund, with only 24% of those surveyed saying those who didn’t pay should be pursued. A straightforward, fair system of payment should be put in place.

BRIGHT SPARKS LIGHT UP THE CLASSROOMS By Eve Kelliher FROM video games to solar-powered farming devices, the science-savvy students at St Brendan’s College have it all covered. A whole host of bright sparks illuminated the classrooms at the college for its annual SciFest. They included Jason Laoi, Patrick Buckley and Kalem Lloyd who displayed innovative video games for the visually impaired.

Meanwhile, enterprising Liam O’Brien and Michael O’Donoghue shed new light on solar-powered, energy-efficient agitators as well as farm safety. Donnacha O’Donoghue turned his attention towards the exploration of plant and animal cells while Cian Gill trained his eyes on the skies with his Hubble telescope. Cian O’Neill, Eoghan O Dubhain and Sean Hickey, meanwhile, wowed with a project that examined the best methods for giving up smoking.

To put this in context, a typical picture on a smartphone is in the region of 3-5MB. Last week another team reported that they had made further strides and have managed to store more information using DNA than was previously possible DNA is found in the cells of almost all living things including humans. DNA is made up of a sequence of code and carries the complete construction blueprints for determining how living things are put together and how they work. It carries instructions for everything from the colour of your eyes, to how tall you are, to your susceptibility to certain diseases. DNA works great to store information because it can make accurate copies of itself, and it has been refined as an information storage medium, through evolution over the course of billions of years. On earth, the amount of digital data produced is doubling every two years as we digitize our lives and work. At the current rate of data production, within 30 years, we will produce over 500 million times more information than we do right now. That’s a lot more information and a lot more DVDs, or hard disk drives. The problem with hard disk drives and DVDs is that they have a limited lifespan, measured in decades rather than millennia and they are not very efficient at storing information densely.

TALKING POINTS

DNA on the other hand can store data over one million times denser than traditional media, and it has a longevity measured in millennia rather than in decades. For the sake of argument, let’s say that a warehouse 1km long by 1km wide full of hard disc drives and PCs is required to store the data humans produced in 2016. By the time we reach 2046, we will require a space six times bigger than Ireland to store the data using current technologies. Using DNA to store this data is much more efficient and space saving; so that large shed six times bigger than Ireland, suddenly becomes a much more manageable 200 by 270 metres. At the moment we can store data at 128 million gigabytes per gramme of DNA. However, I wouldn’t be rushing to buy lettuce to store your movie collection, just yet, because the cost to store data on DNA comes in at about €3300 per MB to write it and a cool €950 per MB to decode it!

All the movies, images, emails and other digital data from more than 600 basic smartphones (10,000 gigabytes) can be stored in the faint pink smear of DNA at the end of this test tube. PICTURE: TARA BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY/UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL KERRY is reporting an increased level of activity and the hospital is advising that non-urgent patients may now experience significant delays. Hospital management is requesting that, where appropriate, the public contact their GP in the first instance and explore all other options available to them prior to attending the Emergency Department if their needs are not urgent. “The hospital would also like to take this opportunity to assure the public and service users that every effort is being made to address this situation,” said a spokesperson. “Patient care is paramount in UHK and the situation is being managed as a priority and reviewed on an ongoing basis. “The HSE South/South West Hospital Group and University Hospital Kerry wish to acknowledge the ongoing hard work and dedication of all staff during this particularly busy time.”

Killarney team helps Boots raise over a million for Irish Cancer Society BOOTS IRELAND announced that its staff and customers have raised an incredible €1 million for the Irish Cancer Society as at the end of December 2016, through fundraising initiatives since the partnership began in June 2012. Pictured here is Sarah O’Connell of the Killarney branch of Boots which along with stores across Ireland has supported the Irish Cancer Society’s Night Nursing service which provides end-of-life care allowing patients to remain in the comfort of their own home surrounded by family and loved ones. The €1 million raised has provided over 2,850 nights of Night Nursing care.

DR CROKES 1992 VICTORY IN THE PICTURE

IN 1992 COLM Cooper embarked an All-Ireland football final adventure for the first time. At the tender age of eight, Colm was the mascot on All-Ireland club final day in Croke Park. Of curse, his brothers were involved, with Danny playing centre-forward in that St Patrick’s Day decider and Mark amongst the subs.

Dr Crokes defeated Thomas Davis by a single point in that final and what a welcome home there was for the triumphant Killarney team. Well-known Killarney photographer Sean Kelly was the official snapper for the team on the occasion and here he shares the original photo album from the historic day, from send-off, to match, to homecoming.

Flashback to 25 years ago KILLARNEY ADVERTISER was delighted to run a two-page colour centre-page spread focusing on the Dr Crokes All-Ireland win 25 years ago along with our everpopular Killarney St Patrick’s Day parade coverage. Colour photos from the parade and from Dr Crokes’ triumph in Dublin reigned supreme in a time when colour pictures in both national and local publications were few and far between. The spread, entitled Killarney – Home & Away – met with a rapturous reaction locally. (Of course, the fact that Australian soap Home & Away held sway on the small screen at the time ensured the headline struck a chord with all ages!) Garden Magic FEELING SPOILT FOR CHOICE? This is the time of year when garden centres and hardware stores fill their shelves to the brim with new products, says Debby Looney

WHAT do you choose when you see the array of brightly coloured boxes, sachets and bottles of must-have fertilisers, tonics and other “magic potions” – I say “magic potions” because a lot of us are not 100% certain which one to use, and, equally important, when to use them. This week I thought I’d go through some of the products available. First of all we need to understand what plants need, and why, in terms of nourishment. In a nutshell, all plants need Nitrogen (N), for production of greenery, Phosphorous (P), for roots, flowers and fruit, and Potassium, (K), for fruit and digestion. All fertilising products will show the amount of these nutrients on their labels in the format: N:P:K, for example a typical lawn feed will contain 12:2:4, meaning 12% is Nitrogen, 2% is Phosphorous and 4% is Potassium. In other words, your lawn will receive the right amount of Nitrogen to maintain a nice green colour. Liquid tomato feed will typically be 4:5:8, a high amount of

Potassium is needed for the development of fruit. So the type of fertilizer you choose should reflect the result you are looking for! Fertilisers come in a variety of different guises. For most shrubs and lawns granular types are the best. They are released into the soil slowly, and so help the plant over a longer period. Liquid feed is handy when applying an “emergency ration”. Liquid feed is also useful when feeding containers of annual plants, as they are greedy. There are also slow-release granules, my favourite, as the nutrients are released over six months or so. Lastly, timing is everything! Feed shrubs and lawns once in early spring, and a little in autumn. Annuals may need an application every six weeks to put on a good show, and baskets may need a feed every fortnight in the summer. As with most items for sale, the price does not always reflect value. Take a few minutes to read the dosage as these amounts vary hugely and always follow the instructions on the label!

• Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

Seamus Weldon open day on a par with the best ALL roads led to Killarney for greenkeepers and landscape specialists who flocked to an open event organised by Seamus Weldon/ John Deere Golf in Killarney’s Ross Golf Club/Killarney Racecourse last week. Representatives of golf clubs from across Munster attended, as did contractors and landscapers. “We had machinery product specialist and some of the top suppliers in the golf machinery industry such as Michael James and David Rea from Wiedenmann UK who travelled from Glasgow, Brian O’Shaughnessey from Campeys Turf Care who travelled from Manchester, all with full lorryloads of golf course demo kits,” said Michael Weldon, sales manager, Seamus Weldon, Barleymount. Territory manager from John Deere Ireland and UK Peter Nelder travelled

from Nottingham. Meanwhile, PJ Callans from Ardee demonstrated grass toppers and small walk-behind machines. Another key attraction was the remote-control robotic Spider mower demonstrated on the day by TH Whites from Edinburgh, while Thomas Redman arrived from Northamptonshire with a lorryload of the full range of Trimax mowers. “We would like to say special thank you to our own staff; great work was done by all organising the John Deere equipment,” said Michael. “Also a great job was done designing the invites, thanks to all involved at Tickety-Boo at Killarney Advertiser. We would like to say a special thanks to Michéal Lucey, racecourse manager, Padraig Bruton, head groundsman, and Michael O’Connor for the use of the facilities.”

RALLY MEXICO

ROUND THREE of the FIA World Rally Championship is jetting across the Atlantic to Mexico, leaving behind the cool European winter. The new World Rally Cars will compete on gravel for the first time this year. In the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT camp, Kris Meeke/ Paul Nagle and Stéphane Lefebvre/Gabin Moreau, Craig Breen is sitting this one out due to the rotation system used for the second car. Meeke and Nagle have only competed in Mexico on two previous occasions with a 16th place best result. Meeke went on to say, "Mexico is one of the rallies I know the least, but it's a course that I like. I think

that we headed in the right direction during testing and I'm looking forward to checking that in racing conditions. Despite the loss of power, it should still be pretty enjoyable to drive the cars because we'll be at more or less the same level as last year's WRCs. We'll have to guard against being too aggressive behind the wheel so as to avoid losing time. I'm also pleased to be going to Mexico City for the super special stage. If the atmosphere at the F1 Grand Prix is anything to go by, then it's going to be a very special occasion in an iconic setting." Surprisingly, the altitude at which the rally is

contested doesn't really affect lubrication of the engine and transmission. However, the high temperatures currently witnessed in the León region will generate greater constraints for the car’s cooling systems. Compared with Monte-Carlo or Sweden, the air will be 30°C hotter and also much drier. After the first two rounds Citroen are behind the curve in terms of driveability against the competition but hopefully the wealth of experience available to this team will have reduced this deficit this weekend.

Roar of support from Lyons of Limerick to help Duggan take on the world RENOWNED Ford, Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover dealers Lyons of Limerick have come on board to help support Rob Duggan, Killarney, in his quest for Junior World Rally Championship glory. Duggan, a former Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year and reigning British Junior Rally Champion, will start his season in less than a fortnight’s time as he tackles the West Cork Rally. Rob will use Lyons’ own R2 Turbo Ford Fiesta on the famous Irish event as an extended shakedown for Rally Corsica, the opening round of the Junior World Rally Championship. As well as refining car

set up, Duggan hopes to use the latest DMACK tyres, getting valuable miles in an identical car to the one he’ll use on his World Rally Championship journey. With the Junior World Rally Championship moving back to R2 machinery, Duggan is confident he can deliver on his astonishing progress to date. Rob said: “I am very grateful to Lyons of Limerick for this opportunity of a two day test to build up competitive miles in an R2T Ford Fiesta. It’ll be a very beneficial exercise and having driven both turbo cars and R2 cars in the past, I’m looking forward to building on my experience in an

exciting car. My previous showings in the World Rally Championship have given me the confidence and belief that I can compete at this level and with another year as part of the Team Ireland Foundation I am looking forward to the season ahead, it’s a very exciting time for myself and the team.” Ken Lyons, managing director, and his son Keith, sales director, are also excited for Duggan. “We are delighted to help support Rob. He is such a promising talent and is clearly going in the right direction. We are pleased to be in a position to help Rob to try and give him the best chance in his World Rally Championship quest.” Open to drivers born after January 1, 1988, the 2017 Junior World Rally Championship will follow an arrive-and-drive format and competitors will drive identical one-litre Ford Fiesta R2Ts. The Junior WRC will be contested over six WRC rounds, – starting in Corsica, then Italy, Poland, Finland and Germany before finishing in Spain. Points will be awarded to the top-ten finishers according to the usual WRC points system and an additional point will be awarded for each fastest stage time.

Toyota proving to be a real bestseller TOYOTA was the bestselling passenger car for 2016 and is also currently the bestselling passenger car for 2017. This week the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released its official statistics for the month of February which show that new car registrations were down -21% (17,128) compared to the same month in 2016 (21,573), with the total new car registrations for 2017 down -8% (56,110) on the same period last year (61,295). Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) have also seen a decrease in February -28% (2,504) when compared to February 2016 (3,457) and are currently down -11% (8,869) year to date. While Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations were up +5% for the month of February (271) but remain down -2% (727) on that of the previous year (745). Commenting on the figures Alan Nolan, SIMI director general, said: “We have been

anticipating lower numbers in February compared to 2016, with Brexit continuing to impact on used vehicle imports, with fewer working days this year and with less hire-drive cars because of a later Easter but these numbers are somewhat poorer than we had hoped. The industry projections for the year suggest a market close to 140,000 for 2017, compared to 147,000 last year, but as Economist Jim Power stated previously, “predicting the new car market for this year is going to be far more difficult than usual”. Even with the relatively poor market in February, the Yearto-Date figure remains just 8% below last year so attention will now turn to the final month of the First Quarter. As a result the market for March will be very closely watched by the industry for a clearer indication of where the 171 registration period is likely to finish up.

In loving memory of Donie and Eileen Clifford late of 71 Park Road Estate who died on the 10th March, 1992 and 29th December, 1994. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday, Unseen, unheard but always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. May the winds of love blow softly, And whisper for you to hear, That we still love and miss you, As it dawns another year. Sadly missed and always remembered by your loving family.

As we lovingly remember our mother Peggy on her 1st Anniversary, we her family, daughters Eileen, Irene, Margaret and Kathleen, sons-in-law Paul, Patrick and Nial, her 13 grandchildren and great grandchild wish to express our sincere gratitude to all who supported and sympathised with us on our loss. A special thank you to our families, friends and neighbours. Thank you to all those who called to the house, attended the rosary, removal, Mass and burial. Those who travelled long distances, sent Mass cards, perpetual enrolments, messages of sympathy and floral tributes. Our sincere thanks to Fr. Niall Howard who carried out the funeral ceremonies and whose kindness and guidance helped make the Mass so meaningful and a fitting tribute to our mother who lived to her ninetieth year. We would also like to thank the Cathedral Choir who sang so beautifully at the Mass. We wish to thank O’Shea’s Undertakers for their professionalism and courtesy to us. We would like to thank all those who cared for Mam during the last few years of her life. Dr. Darren Quirke, Public Health Nurse Hannah Healy and all the other nurses who called to her home. Her home help Theresa together with Nora and her team of wonderful women who cared for her during the last few weeks of her life. The Palliative Care Team and the staff of Killarney Community Hospital where she spent the last weekend of her life who were so good, kind and supportive to both Mam and us during that time. Finally, good neighbours are a blessing and we would like to thank the O’Sullivan Family especially Mary Ann for the love and friendship shown to Mam and us since they moved to Knockeenduve many years ago. CRONIN

In loving memory of Peggy Cronin, Late of Knockeenduve, Killarney who died on 13th March, 2016. There are no words to tell you Mom, What losing you has meant. But now each day brings memories, Of happy years we spent. You’d want us all to smile again, And that’s just what we do, Every time we reminisce, With loving thoughts of you. You’re with us when each new day dawns, And when we say goodnight, Our guardian angel here on earth and Heaven’s shining light. Lovingly remembered by your daughter Margaret.

1ST ANNIVERSARY CRONIN

In loving memory of Peggy Cronin late of Knockeenduve, Killarney. Died 13th March, 2016 Nana I think about you all the time, And every day it hurts to cry. So much has happened in my life, I’m not sure how hard to try. Tears are falling constantly, My heart hurts everyday. I think about your beautiful smile, That I pray I see again someday. The sweet smell of your perfume, Has slowly faded away. But all your helpful teachings, Are always here to stay. I can’t express how much you taught me, So much I can’t explain. All the times I can remember, Never once heard you complain. So many hearts were broken, The day God called you home. It seems as though each one of us, Were left to survive alone. Loved and never forgotten by Keith, Jake & Rogan x

We ask this through the intercession of Mary, mother of God and infinite mercy of her son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

ATHLETIC SHOCK CELTIC

WITH THRILLING LATE COMEBACK

A snapshot of the action from last Friday’s derby. PICTURE: KONRAD PAPROCKI

First derby win in over ten years keeps Blues on top, writes Adam Moynihan KILLARNEY CELTIC 2-3 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC IN A pulsating match that swung back and forth it was Killarney Athletic who eventually emerged victorious last Friday night, Paudie Clifford’s late winner enough to see off great rivals Celtic and clinch three crucial points as we head towards the business end of the season. Given the rapid-fire nature of our attacks and how comfortable Celtic are on the ball, they naturally had a lot of possession and managed to keep us on the back foot for large spells. But we break very quickly when we do get the ball and there was a familiar feel to the game’s opening goal. Will Courtney was played in down the left midway through the first half and showed the Celtic defence a clean set of heels before squaring to Shane Lynch who applied the finish from close range. Celtic responded well and

80

Killarney Advertiser 10.03.17

created some great opportunities before the break but Wayne Sparling, Pa McGrath and Peter McCarthy were all denied by the woodwork, while at the other end Roy Kelliher tipped Courtney’s effort onto the frame of the goal. The home side were adamant they should have had a penalty when Cathal O’Shea shifted the ball past me in the box and went to ground. Referee Derek O’Shea gave a free out and booked the Celtic attacker for diving. To be honest, I felt like I didn’t make a challenge but there was definitely contact – whether or not Cathal intentionally initiated it I couldn’t really say. We went in at the break a goal to the good but knew Celtic would come out swinging and they did just that. In fact, within ten minutes of the restart they were ahead. The equaliser came from right back Chris O’Leary who drifted forward and rose highest to head beyond Brian O’Connor via the

crossbar. When Celtic’s top scorer Sparling added to his tally for the season with another well-placed header, it seemed as though there was only going to be one winner. As long as we kept it at 2-1 there was always a slight chance of sneaking something and when Pauly O’Donoghue, who was outstanding in the middle of the park, attacked Will Courtney’s corner and powered home a header with less than ten minutes to go, the sides were level once again. We would have bitten your hand off for a draw at that stage to be honest so what happened next was a shock to everyone. With time running out, Pauly O’Donoghue won the ball back around thirty yards from goal before slipping in Paudie Clifford on the left and his low, fizzing shot squirmed under Kelliher and trickled over the line. Celtic pushed for what would have been a dramatic leveller but we just managed to hold on for all three points. The result keeps us joint top with Fenit, who also won over the weekend, and eleven points clear of Celtic who still have four

games in hand. Celtic’s immediate attention now turns to their huge FAI Junior Cup quarterfinal clash with Janesboro. Having beaten both of last year’s league finalists in consecutive weeks we’re obviously full of confidence but there’s still a long way to go, and I’m sure Celtic will come back at us even stronger in the return fixture.

Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the line-up of sport for the week ahead WHAT a hectic line-up of sport lies ahead for the next week. First up is the eagerly awaited FAI Junior Cup quarterfinal Killarney Celtic v Janesboro. That game goes ahead on tomorrow, Saturday, March 11, with kick-off timed for 7pm in Celtic Park. Celtic have some great scalps to their credit in recent months and with a home fixture they won’t be overawed facing Janesboro, a top class side with proven credentials. Admission is just a fiver for adults and €2 for children. I urge readers to go along to Celtic Park on tomorrow night and get behind the local team in this big game. There are four days’ racing at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday, Mach 14, Champion Day, Wednesday, March 15, Ladies Day, Thursday, March 16, St Patrick's Day, and Friday, March 17, Cheltenham Gold Cup Day. On St Patrick’s Day the eagerly awaited All Ireland Club football final will be played in Croke Park where Dr Crokes hope to bridge that long gap stretching back to 1992 when they last won their one and only All Ireland Club Championship title. They will be playing Slaughtneil, the Derry champions. More about that in this and in next week’s issue. On Saturday 18th the eagerly awaited Kerry v Dublin national football league clash goes ahead in Tralee under lights commencing at 7pm and on Saturday, March 18, St Brendan’s College put their Hogan Cup title on the line against the Connacht champions. As we go to press efforts are being made to change this enticing All Ireland colleges semi-final to a different date. Readers should check with the college for a possible re-fixture. Let us not forget the rugby international, Ireland v Wales. ON THE ROAD TO CROKER What a fairytale year Slaughtneil are having. They won the Ulster club titles in hurling, football and in camogie. That’s impressive by any standards for the Derry club. They were beaten by Cuala Casements in the hurling decider at the All Ireland semifinal stage but their ladies were crowned All Ireland champions on Sunday last when they defeated Sarsfields of Galway 1-10 to 0-11 in a hectic camogie

final. It is the first All Ireland camogie title for the Derry club, but heartbreak for Sarsfields as this was their fifth consecutive final defeat. Slaughtneil will be hoping to add the All Ireland men’s’ club title to crown a great year, but Dr Crokes will be bidding to stop them. THE BARRS OF CORK Just once before has a club contested both the All Ireland senior football and hurling club finals – and that was Cork’s St Finbarr’s back in 1981. On May 17, 1981, St Finbarr’s lost out to Kilkenny’s Ballyhale Shamrocks by 1-11 to 1-15 in the hurling final but the club bounced back to claim football glory by defeating Meath outfit Walterstown in the big ball decider, which was played at Croke Park on 31 May. HURLERS AND FOOTBALLERS There was a huge crossover between the Slaughtneil football and hurling squads, as eight players who started in that victory over St Vincent’s in the football lined out against Cuala in the hurling semi-final. The double dream was very much alive for Brendan Rodgers, Karl McKaigue, Paul McNeill, Chrissy McKaigue, Shane McGuigan, Meehaul McGrath, Sé McGuigan and Cormac O’Doherty, but they were well beaten by Cuala In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph Slaughtneil's talisman Chrissy McKaigue warned All-Ireland final opponents Dr Crokes, that they are a different animal from the team that lost the 2015 decider to Corofin.

CHRISSY MCKAIGUE In the semi-final, McKaigue simply obliterated his direct opponent Diarmuid Connolly, outscoring him 0-4 to 0-1. If as expected Crokes will line out the same as they did against Corofin he will be marking Gavin O’Shea whose goal before half time knocked the heart out of Corofin. “It went well enough. On another day Diarmuid Connolly could give you all the trouble you want.” BRENDAN RODGERS For a spell during the first half, Connolly moved closer to the edge of the square, where he was picked up by Brendan Rodgers who also embarked upon a number of forays upfield. “It’s an easy thing to sit back, relax and let them bombard you,” said Rodgers afterwards. “Why not go for it? If that means defenders have to go and make that run, make the hard yards, and that’s the only way you can be successful. You will miss the scores you don’t take!” Rodgers also described the feeling within a club that have already booked their place in the football and camogie All-Ireland finals. “There is no hype in the club. Everyone leaves the players to it because they don’t need any distractions,” Brendan Rodgers explained. “If you need help in any way, they are there to support us 100%. “For us to give something back by winning a game of football, it’s nice to show our appreciation.” IN THE DNA McKaigue went further to explain the astonishing durability of this special club. “I know many people didn’t give us a chance,” he said in the run

Rugby news & views A RELATIVELY quiet weekend last weekend rugby wise, as the Six Nations took a well-earned break. While some players were released to their clubs for the latest round of PRO 12 games, others were rested ahead of this weekend’s trip to Cardiff for the Wales V Ireland match. This promises to be a pretty intense match as Wales lost to Scotland in the previous round and will want to bounce back with a win with one eye on the Lions in June. Joe Schmidt’s men will want a win at the Principality Stadium and a final showdown with England on St Patrick’s weekend. Cardiff is always a tough place for any team to leave with a win. The

up to the St Vincent’s semi-final. “Sometimes a wee bit of spirit and fight goes a long way. We have a group of boys that it’s in their DNA to fight. When it comes to these kind of games in the white heat of the Championship, we tend to fight and fight and fight. And more often than not, it tends to work out. “A huge gratitude is owed to Mickey Moran and his coaching team. They are the boys that set up the system and the plays and make sure everything is right. More often than not, it tends to be right.” Unlike final opponents Dr Crokes — with Colm Cooper, Daithi Casey and Kieran O’Leary leading a sparkling attack — most of the Slaughtneil panel was engaged with the hurlers. “I would be the first to say it — if you are at a dual club like ours at the minute, if you are looking for the perfect preparation or the perfect scenario, it’s not going to happen,” admitted McKaigue. “Sometimes you get frustrated with each other and the management teams get frustrated with each other because they want more out of the group. We just have to accept it. It’s not perfect. Far from it. At the same time, playing that game (V St Vincent’s) with the pressure, the crowd, the atmosphere, it is only going to benefit us. “We mightn’t be as skilful as them, but by God, we will battle and we will use that experience”, he said. Crokes have it all to do in this final, as the Slaughtneil side will have the benefit of playing in Croke Park two years ago. However, Dr Crokes will revel in the wide-open spaces of Croker.

with Liam Murphy

home of many great weekends for Irish fans and especially for Munster fans, Cardiff was the scene of a huge upset last weekend as Munster came to town looking to make amends for the defeat at home to Scarletts the previous weekend. Having watched a 15-point lead in the first half turn into a 9-point loss, Rassie’s men were determined to continue the good results to date. A cracking match played out in terrible conditions, albeit on a synthetic surface and Munster pulled out all the stops to score 10 points in the final 4 minutes to win 13-23. It was great to see Rory Scannell score a drop goal under pressure when the scores

were tied and youngster Conor Oliver step up to score the winner. Speaking of youngsters, best of luck to our very own Killarney RFC U14s who are into the final of the West Munster League next Saturday. The lads won an amazing 11 out of the 12 matches played in the league this season and take on Castleisland in Tralee at 11am in a hotly anticipated final. Best of luck to coaches Seamus Greally and John O’Connell and all the lads. Let’s get to O’Dowd Park and support the lads.

SPOTLIGHT ON BASKETBALL STAR MUKI by Eamonn Keogh FORMER Slovenian basketball international Muharem 'Muki' Vugdalic has just completed a six-month stint in Killarney where he served as the St Paul's Basketball Club director of coaching. He was of great assistance to all club coaches and players and also made a big impact in the local schools. His presence certainly helped St Paul's make very progressive steps in the promotion and development of Killarney basketball. Muki reflects on his experience in Killarney in a question and answer session here.... What are the main differences that you have noticed between basketball in Ireland and basketball in your home country? The main difference is that players are usually focused on training for one specific sport in Slovenia and not two or three different sports like in Ireland. Coaches are professionals and children from U-12 to U-18 would practice three to four times per week plus games during the weekends. Basketball is not the number one sport in Slovenia. It is in third place. First is alpine skiing followed by soccer and then basketball. In Ireland, I noticed that it is a family tradition to play Gaelic football that is why most of children want to play that sport because of their parents’ influence along with family and parish history. That is why maybe basketball can be a second or third preference sport for children in Ireland. Were you impressed with the quality standard of the young players that you have coached in St Paul’s and local schools? I was very impressed with the quality of some players especially the girls who were much more interested in practice than many of the boys. I didn't expect them to be at a high level and great credit is due to the club coaches who worked with them before I arrived in Killarney. Did you notice if the young players in Ireland have a good knowledge about the global basketball world? Are they all very familiar with the top American NBA players and would you recommend that they concentrate more on European basketball to improve their skills? I believe that players in Ireland who are serious about practice and developing their skills should watch and learn from European basketball. The most competitive and intensive

leagues are in Spain, Serbia, Lithuania, Croatia and Slovenia. They won't learn as much from the NBA as I believe that a lot of the games in that league are just a show and entertainment for the fans. The European leagues will teach you everything about basketball and help you to improve as a player. How can the St Paul's club and the coaches that you worked with during the season continue to carry on the good work and coaching strategy that you implemented? The club and coaches need to make a good selection of the players who are committed to playing basketball. I recommend that the players need to make a decision about the number one sport that they want to practice. The club needs to do that because only then players can improve and be better. Coaches who worked with me have a lot of knowledge and they understand basketball. It is difficult to be coaching young players who practice basketball but are also focused on other sports. In the long term, I firmly believe that the club would be better off having 200 children who will commit to basketball practice three times per week and learn the basic skills and develop their game. This would be better then trying to cater for 400 children where basketball is not the number one priority for all. I understand that is great for a club to have big membership numbers and it does bring more money into the club. However if the club only had to concentrate on the play-

ers who are totally dedicated to basketball, resources and coaches could be put to better use. Do you think that top-level Superleague basketball will ever return to Killarney and what would you recommend? I know there is a great tradition of top-level basketball in Killarney and many people would love to see it return. Everything is dependent on finance and sponsorship. I believe Killarney deserves Superleague because there are great facilities here. Apart from basketball, did you go and watch any other sporting events in Killarney? I was at one game of Gaelic football and I enjoyed it very much. I will not forget that game when a player got injured on the field but the referee didn’t stop the game. I was surprised to see the team doctors treating him on the field but the game carried on as normal. Did you enjoy your time in Killarney? Is there anything in particular here that you enjoyed doing? I really enjoyed my time in Killarney. It was like being at home only without my family. It is a beautiful town and everyone was very nice to me. I will not forget the great experience – apart from a lot of rainy days and the strong winds! The National Park is beautiful and amazing, especially if you go there on a jaunting car and see the great history everywhere.

KILLARNEY ATHLETIC FC

RESULTS Denny Premier A Killarney Celtic 2-3 Killarney Athletic A great win against rivals and fellow league contenders on Friday night at a blustery and wet Celtic Park. Athletic are on a great run at the moment beating league champions Dingle Bay in the last game and attacked the Celtic goal early on with William Courtney and Shane Lynch having great chances before they combined again in the 27th minute for Shane Lynch to slide in at the back post. Athletic had a shout for a penalty when William went around the Celtic goalkeeper and was tripped but the referee waved away the shout. Celtic had a chance themselves hitting the outside of the post but the score remained 1-0 at half time. Into the second half and Celtic got two quickfire goals through Chris O Leary and Wayne Sparling. This was the wake up tonic that Athletic needed and they pushed on again. In the 80th minute, another ball from the left hand side found Pauly O Donoghue to slot home for an equaliser. Athletic weren’t going to share the spoils and a tame cross from the left was fumbled by the Celtic goalkeeper to let rising Athletic star Paudie Clifford to slot home to give the blues all 3 points . A great win in the business end of the season

FOSSA GAA

LOTTO Numbers drawn were 5, 6, 8, 16. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €13,800. SENIORS Well done to our senior team who recorded a good win over Spa in the East Kerry league on Sunday in Fossa. Played in tough conditions, the first half was a low scoring affair, with both sides struggling to find their range. Donald O’ Sullivan, Paudie Clifford and Anthony Wharton kicked a point each in this half to leave the teams tied at three points each at half time. The second half was much better with the sides trading scores, Fossa had several goal chances but didn’t capitalize on them, however they finished the half strongly with points from Paudie Clifford and Donald O’ Sullivan to leave Fossa deserving winners on a score line of 0-09 to 0-08. MINORS Minor Co league Div 3 Beaufort 2-13 Fossa 3-11 A cracking game in Beaufort saw Fossa pull through by the narrowest of margins - but before the match report - a huge thanks to the Beaufort Field Committee who had the field in top shape, and after the week of rain we had, it was s credit to them. This was Fossa’s first game and the team was captained by Liam Buckley. Beaufort started brightly and raced into an early lead, scoring 1-2 to Fossa’s single point but Fossa gradually took control in the middle of the field and goals by David Clifford and Emmett O’Shea had Fossa 2-8 to 1-5 in front at the break. Fossa had some scary moments in defense but Anthony O’Keeffe was outstanding at full back and saved Fossa on a few occasions. The second half was a more tense affair with Beaufort clawing their way back into the game but another opportunist goal by Emmett O’Shea again put daylight between the teams - Beaufort finished the strongest and Fossa hung on to win by a point, on the day all the Fossa forwards scored and the it was a good team display. Next Saturday Fossa make the long trip to Gaeltacht for the next round of the league. MEMBERSHIP Club membership is now due.
