EDITOR'S VIEW WELL, it’s been some week. How did the polls and pundits get it so wrong? The astonishment surrounding the shock result of Brexit in June is only trotting after the reaction to Donald Trump’s presidential victory. This week we bring you an insight into Killarney’s connection with the new US president-elect, with an in-depth piece by our new monthly columnist, renowned Killarney journalist Anne Lucey. See page 34 for the first of Anne’s new columns in which

she shares her opinions on happenings at home and across the globe. We are also very pleased to welcome a new addition to the team, Kieran Healy, who joined us this week also; see page 12. Last but not least, congratulations to local artist Martin Carey who launched his first book, The Haha, in Killarney Library, last Saturday (see page 32). The cartoons Martin contributes to Killarney Advertiser have rapidly become a must-view aspect of the publication.

Oireachtas festival attracts over 12,000 to Killarney ALTHOUGH the tourist season has drawn to a close, Killarney welcomed an estimated 12,000 people to the Oireachtas Festival last weekend. The annual Oireachtas Festival is a mecca for lovers and performers of the traditional arts and this year’s competitions included storytelling, sean-nós dancing and singing, and the famous Lúibíní competition in which two people perform a rhyming story through song.

AS REPUBLICAN Donald Trump has been elected the 45th president of the United States, the family of a Killarney man who has worked with Mr Trump for a decade posed with pictures of the new president that are on display in their hotel. Chicago-based Colm O’Callaghan, who is regional vice-president of Trump International Hotels, has previously noted how people like the fact that his boss is straight talking. On Wednesday, his mother Eileen O’Callaghan and brother Paudie O’Callaghan of The Fáilte Hotel, Killarney, were photographed by Don MacMonagle. In the picture they hold a picture of Colm with the new president of the United States, as well as another picture in which Colm gives a welcome smile and handshake to then-Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on her visit to the Trump Hotel in Chicago several years ago. In a statement on Facebook, Mr O’Callaghan noted: “I have not gotten political on FB for the last 18 months, watched as many got very vocal and quite frequent on here. While I didn't always agree I could understand to some extent, although disappointed at times. “But to a large degree, life is about perspective and in the perspective of many, things were not working, were going horribly wrong. Now, no one is going to burn down the house, he might clear the swamp a little but I think we all need a new perspective and figure out the best way to make this work. Time to wake up, life just got a wee bit more interesting.” Meanwhile, Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said: “Whether you like President Elect Donald Trump or not, we are where we are, it is time to congratulate him and to work in conjunction with him and others for the betterment of society. “I would hope that President Elect Trump will value the Irish people for what we are, hard workers and a country that has had great relations with America in the past. I wish him well in his endeavours.”

Frances powers her way to world championships BEST of luck to Killarney native Frances Arthur who jetted off to Italy yesterday to compete in the World Powerlifting Championships. Frances, a teacher at Holy Cross Mercy National School, was boosted by the good wishes of the pupils in her senior infants class. She will compete in the prestigious competition, in Lake Garda, on November 12 and 13, in the 53kg weight category. Frances qualified for the world championships in Dublin in May. She trains at Phoenix Fitness gym in High Street, Killarney, with Sean McCarthy. Sean, together with her friend and fellow powerlifting enthusiast Melanie Aranda, are travelling with Frances to Italy to support her. “I will be competing in deadlift, squat and benchpress events,” said Frances. “I have really loved powerlifting since I started it and the deadlift is my favourite category.”

TRUMP’S PLANE IS FOR SALE THE US Presidential election has offered great comedic fodder over the past number of months and it is set to continue with the surprise election of Trump. This week ‘Donal T’ placed an advert on DoneDeal which reads; “Airplane For Quick sale due to new company Jet - €15,000,000. Reluctant sale due to new company airplane and funds needed for construction project. No tyre kickers or time wasters €15m ono. Pimped out to the last, low mileage and full service history. Might suit "Glamping site" conversion.” It appears from the origin of the posting that ‘Donal T’ was in Killarney????

Killarney rings in the changes with defibrillator telephone box

Kerry Stars get set to have a ball KERRY STARS will be shining as the Special Olympics Club hosts its 10th annual black-tie ball when it takes place in The Malton Hotel next Friday, November 18. Tickets are €60 per person and guests will enjoy a mulled wine drinks reception, five-course dinner and dancing and entertainment until late. Emer Corridan of Kerry Stars said: “We are really looking forward to the annual get together. It's amazing to see these wonderful Kerry Stars athletes in all their finery....when usually we see them in tracksuits!” Emer added: “We are thrilled that one of our own athletes, the wonderful Emma Doolan, will be MC for the night along with Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan. Eoin O'Beara from Special Olympics Munster will be the guest speaker.” As for the musical entertainment, The Deerhunters band and DJ Botty will keep the party going late into the night. “You can be guaranteed the dance floor will be packed from start to finish,” said Emer. Tickets are available from Emer Corridan on 087-1240046 or Tom Tobin, 087-2338575.

KILLARNEY teenager Tom Geaney, whose life was saved by the use of a defibrillator after he suffered a heart attack, cut the ribbon on the defibrillator telephone box on Main Street on Thursday. Tom, whose parents are both local GPs, owes his life to the quick reaction of club officials and the nearby access to a defibrillator. The new Heart of Killarney project aims to increase the public awareness around the location of the public access AEDs in Killarney. Killarney aims to be the most heartsafe town in Ireland, with community first responders, public access AEDs and public training initiatives. The Heart of Killarney complements the existing services in the overall goal of reducing the lives lost to sudden cardiac arrests each year, said Damien Baker and Leo O’Connor, the project leads for the Heart of Killarney who have spear headed this project working alongside Cllr Donal Grady, Kerry County Council and Irish Independent Healthfoods and many more supporters of the project. “Historically the phone box played a huge part of Ireland’s communities; it was the lifeline that kept families together,” said Damien Baker. “Now they can do that again by housing these life saving devices and help the public recognise and remember the locations of the AEDs.” Killarney, as with other heart healthy projects, aims to lead this innovative project and hopes it will be a national role out over the next few years, he added. “The team at Heart of Killarney have created a template for the project that will be provided on request to other towns on that want to follow with this initiative,” said Leo O’Connor. Killarney has 13 public access AEDs which drastically improve the chances of survival of someone who has an out of hospital cardiac arrest. “The team at the heart of Killarney are working with the other groups already in existence in Killarney to strengthen the chain of survival,” added Leo, who is also the coordinator of the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. Humanitarian award winner says we have a duty to reach out to refugees A MISSIONARY priest who rescues children from prostitution in the Philippines has said Ireland can do more to help those fleeing oppression, war and poverty. Fr Shay Cullen was in Killarney at the weekend to receive the prestigious Hugh O'Flaherty International Humanitarian Award for his work with children as young as nine who have been forced into sex slavery. In his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday, the 73-year-old Columban priest said Ireland has "a duty to reach out to" refugees with compassion, empathy and self-sacrifice. He received the prestigious award on behalf of the PREDA Foundation which he set up in 1974. “Silence is consent in the face of human rights abuse. We have to take stand for human dignity and speak out for life and against death,” Fr Shay told the Killarney gathering. “What Monsignor Hugh was up against was similar as the Nazi Gestapo in Rome rounded up innocents and executed them because they were seen as different, as inferior human beings and as enemies.” He added: “The same is going on today in Syria and Iraq, the commitment and saving action of Mons Hugh is needed today more than ever. “Here, Ireland is opening it doors wider and has committed to relocate and to resettle 4,000 refugees and will continue to receiving 80 refugees a month. This is an enlightened action but Ireland can do more to help those fleeing oppression, war and dire poverty.”

At the presentation to Fr Shay Cullen of the Hugh O'Flaherty Humanitarian Award in the Killarney Avenue on Saturday night, were front row from left, Deirdre O'Reagan, Senator Paul Coughlan, recipient Fr Shay Cullen, Mayor Brendan Cronin and Pearl Dineen. Killarney to host world’s largest gathering of travel bloggers SOME 650 of the world’s leading travel bloggers will be jetting into Kerry next year as Killarney hosts a major social media conference, TBEX Europe 2017. Announcing that Ireland has won the bid to host the prestigious and influential event, Fáilte Ireland said it would be a major boost for tourism in Ireland and is poised “to make Ireland go viral”. The conference, which takes place from October 3-5, 2017, in the INEC, Killarney, will be the largest gathering in the world of travel bloggers and writers, new media content creators, and social media-savvy travel industry professionals. These are visitors with an online output which reaches an audience of over 300m. The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Thanks to the efforts of Fáilte Ireland, we have won a conference which will deliver up to 650 of the world’s most influential travel bloggers to our shores with the potential to showcase Ireland to hundreds of millions worldwide. The future of tourism is very much dependent on growing our digital footprint and an event like this is a significant boost for marketing all the great assets we have on offer.” Fáilte Ireland’s head of publicity, Ciara Sugrue, said no other event in the world offers Ireland the opportunity to meet with so many travel bloggers, traditional travel media, digital content creators, and social media influencers all at once. “This is a community with a combined reach of over 300 million and, by bringing them here, TBEX 2017 provides us with a fantastic opportunity to create the largest blogger-storm that Ireland has ever seen and put our country very much front and centre in the world’s digital shop window for travel,” she added. It is expected that TBEX Europe 2017 attendees will primarily come from North America and Europe but there will also be a sizeable contingent present from Asia and the rest of the world.

Dancing all the way to the Late Late Toy Show TALENTED troupes of Killarney dancers will be stepping it out on the Late Late Toy Show this year. Eighteen dancers from the Sheehan Murphy School of Dance and the under-15 set dancers from Spa will take centre stage on the show on December 2. The youngsters from the Sheehan Murphy School of Dance, coached by Norrie Sheehan, Aine Murphy and Mary O’Mahony, are aged between six and sixteen. They will be performing a step-dance piece choreographed especially for them and which they debuted as entertainment at the wedding of Norrie’s son’s Pat Sheehan and his bride Joanne Murphy. Meanwhile, Spa’s super set dancers will be performing a set on the toy show also. There was great excitement last night in Spa GAA Clubhouse when dance teachers Triona and Mairead Mangan told their All-Ireland under-15 mixed set, that RTÉ invited them to the hugely popular toy show. “Noreen O’Sullivan, one of the parents of the dancers (Cian), sent in a video of the team with the permission of the dance coaches to RTÉ Late Late Toy Show auditions,” said spokeswoman Anne Holland. “To say that the roof wasn’t nearly lifted with excitement in Spa is an understatement, when the dancers found out they made the cut.”

Kerry Science Festival set to address gender balance THE Kerry Science Festival is poised to enlighten and encourage young women to build a gender balance in the field of science, technology engineering and maths (STEM). Adults and children across the Kerry region are gearing up for what promises to be a busy week of exhibitions, experiments and workshops, as the inaugural Kerry Science Festival is almost upon us. The jampacked programme of events, which runs from Sunday, November 13, to Sunday, November 20, includes free activities and public engagement events to intrigue and enlighten people of all ages. There is currently an obvious and worrying lack of gender diversity within the industry, with only 10% of women occupying positions within the engineering sector. This alarming statistic also filters through to the ICT sector in Ireland, with the current ratio of male to female employees lying at 81:19. In order to highlight the exciting job opportunities for women in STEM, Kerry Science Festival will host the very first Girls Hackathon in Kerry, which will take place in association with Microsoft. Also featured on the Kerry Science Festival calendar is a variety of industry and community group-led events, demonstrating STEM across Kerry. A number of schools across the county have been twinned with local companies and will jointly host events. Companies operating in the STEM sector are also encouraged to consider hosting their own events as part of the festival, showcasing where STEM can be found in their business activities. IT Tralee’s STEM Showcase, which is one of the highlights of the week, takes place on Saturday 19th from 11am-5pm. Details on all of the events as part of Kerry Science Festival can be found at www.kerryscience.com. Kerry Science Festival events are free, but many will require registration as places on interactive workshops are limited.

READERS were clamouring to get their hands on a copy of Killarney artist Martin Carey’s first book The Haha on Saturday. Martin, who is resident cartoonist with Killarney Advertiser, was in demand at the unveiling of the new publication at Killarney Library. Officiating at the launch were the Healy-Rae brothers, Deputies Michael and Danny, who themselves feature in the book. Martin, from Kilcummin, has always had a passion for art and will be known to many locally for his stunning watercolour paintings. Now his cartoons have won him another whole legion of fans both in print and online, particularly in the past few months. His family were among those congratulating Martin, including his wife Tina and daughters Nicola, Hazel and Holly. Also wishing Martin well were his colleagues from his day job at Killarney Railway Station as well as his former teacher at Presentation Monastery National School, Councillor Michael Gleeson. The Haha, which was designed by Ticketyboo Design & Print at Killarney Advertiser, features a whole host of eye-catching, humorous and thoughtprovoking cartoons and would make the perfect Christmas present. It is on sale throughout Killarney, in Eason, O’Connor’s Newsagents, Eagers, Kerry GAA Store in Killarney Outlet Centre, Bricin, Serendipity and Muckross Gift Shop. It retails at €9.99. Martin will also be selling it online through Facebook (martincareyart) and Etsy.

Keep the wolves from the door this Christmas WITH Christmas being just around the corner, an exciting and wonderful time for families, but for many it can be a time of stress and financial strain. Chapter 23 Kerry Credit Unions has teamed up with independent financial advisory organisation MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service) to produce their “Keep the Wolves from the Door” a Christmas Survival Guide. Chapter 23 Credit Unions Marketing Committee Chairperson and Killarney Credit Union staff member, Helen Courtney Power noted that the guide “highlights the different source of credit available from moneylenders, personal loans, credit card debt and high interest store credit”. Jerry Doyle, Kerry MABS Co-Ordinator, said: “MABS is delighted to be working with credit unions in Kerry on this Keep the Wolves from the Door initiative. MABS is a government funded service but operate independently of government departments, the HSE, credit unions, banks, etc.” Copies of the guide are available at Killarney Credit Union branches, MABS, local shops and businesses and will be distributed to local households in the coming weeks.

NEWS&VIEWS

Anne Lucey shares her views on happenings around Kerry and beyond in her new monthly column

Trump triumphs PRESIDENT-ELECT Donald Trump’s triumph is being greeted with shock in most places: but it may hold a surprise for Killarney. One of the new President’s key executives, and close associates who flies in the Trump jet with him, is none other than Chicago-based Colm O’Callahgan, regional vice-president at Trump International Hotels. Colm is the second eldest son of Eileen and the late Dermot O’Callaghan, for many years a town councillor, of the Fáilte Hotel, ironically an establishment long associated with politics and lively political debate. Some time back when Mr Trump was to visit his golf course in Doonbeg in Co. Clare, plans were being hatched to have the candidate visit Killarney and the Fáilte Hotel, but Trump avoided Ireland. Now there will surely be an even greater welcome on the doubtless red mat. A close associate of the O’Callaghans, Michael Healy-Rae (he calls Paudie O’Callaghan his “commander-in-chief”) might well be at the presidential inauguration, in his flat cap, sources say. Is it too fanciful to ponder that the same drivers in Trump’s triumph are there to an extent in the Healy-Rae political phenomenon? I have read the fascinating analysis – and was listening to the world service on BBC radio when the

world did a step back at about 2.45 am Greenwich Meantime, and suddenly the Trump camp were reviving with the voting pattern in Florida, the Boston Globe was calling it for Trump, the dial on the New York Times began moving from blue to red, the radio shuddered and the female presenter said hang on is this is a bit like Brexit… Both moments were so pivotal it’s like remembering where were you when President Kennedy was shot. One thing jumps out in both Brexit and Trumpit: people are sick and tired of political correctness which is seen as strangling free speech in the US as it is here. Now while few people would be as “robust” as Trump in storming the castle of PC it is interesting to note that it is not what Trump says, but the fact he dares to say it that resonates with people. In other words the devil is no longer in the detail. Media bosses and political strategists alike have simply forgotten (or have chosen to suppress) how attractive what used to be called “divilment” is .The vast majority of people do not want to be serious all of the time, they do sometimes want to say exaggerated things and not expect to be taken literally, whether on face book or onstage, and end up in court for it. The more intelligent of the Trump voters seemed

Future of St Finan’s Hospital

NOW to saner matters….there is much talk about St Finan’s Hospital in Killarney. To give credit to local politicians they are constantly raising the cost of maintaining the Gothic pile that is stunningly set. But the future of the iconic 1850s Victorian building which once housed over 1,000 psychiatric patients has not been decided. Previously owned by the county council it came into the hands of the health board in the restructuring that saw hospitals taken out of the hands of local authorities around 40 years ago. There have been growing calls to transfer the lands back to Kerry County Council for much-needed social housing. Vacant with almost three years and although the original building is good repair it has now been listed as at “moderate” risk by An Taisce, the National Trust, because it is has been vacant with so long. An Taisce said St Finan’s was "the most architecturally distinguished of the 19th century Irish mental hospitals to the design of Sir Thomas Deane". “This building urgently requires new uses to be identified to prevent further deterioration of its character,” An Taisce said. Just last week the city that was once home to the Popes announced it will be converting the old vacant Prison of St Anne, a historical monument, to a mixture of residential, shops and artists studios. The renovation will bring life to an abandoned quarter at a cost of around €18 million. The conversion would also mean turning around the difficult history, rooted in the mind as well as the stones of the building the architects said. There will be restaurants and a bar, crèche and 70 apartments and a park, as well as artists’ studios and boutiques, and it will be a draw for tourists. A hotel and catering college combined would be an excellent idea and the walled city of Avignon in the south of France which is converting a weedgrown, abandoned prison, may give us food for thought.

to understand this and laugh off the mad stuff he said. (I am sincerely hoping he didn’t mean some of it) while the stoic, completely sane and let’s face it worthy and humourless Hillary Clinton, stood school-teacherly alongside the bold child. A politician who wants to make a break through these days will understand that it is the colour that counts, maybe even the ability to outrage which is seen as daring, as much as content. Nigel Farage is an example. It is clear now, voters did not so much focus on what he was saying but on the twinkle in his eye.

SPEAKING OF tourism A NEW seven-year plan for tourism, launched by the county council in Listowel, aims to spread tourism into every corner of the county. Like bicycles in Beijing, there are 50,000 tourist beds in Kerry, we are told and around 20,000 are in the formal or registered category. The figure is from the well-researched “County Kerry” tourism strategy launched recently in Listowel – a town with the fewest tourist beds in Kerry. Killarney, for instance, was the birthplace of Irish tourism over 250 years ago, the introduction tells us in the second line. And that’s about it as far as Killarney is concerned. The rest of it is about what County Kerry earns from tourism and what County Kerry will earn from tourism. And the 272 actions for tourism that are to be taken over the Biblical seven years that the strategy is to inform are mainly outside of Killarney. They include “universal access”, i.e. a cable car, alas it is to a mountain outside of a conservation area, which is disappointing as it means the cable car for Mangerton put forward 40 years ago is not on the agenda any more. An all-weather covering for Killarney town is to be looked at and blueways and lakeways long planned are included. What the strategy doesn’t really tell us is – most of the 50,000 beds are concentrat-

ed in Killarney, most of the €420 million in money earned from tourism is earned in Killarney, and what is not revealed at all is that the single greatest contribution from rates, across the county, is also from Killarney. Killarney’s contribution is €10.1m; while the total amount of rates collected for the Tralee Municipal District for 2015 is €7.6 million. There is a perception that Killarney, “keeps it all for itself”. And there is a need to spread it out. Other parts of the county too can benefit from adventure tourism and extend their season and their accommodation base, John Griffin the county tourism officer said. Some readers will be old enough to remember the 1990s and the energetic of Dick Spring in Tralee. With his help came a determined and confident push for tourism for Tralee which it was said was going to take over from Killarney. Millions of punts poured into Tralee projects and most were spectacular flops. This was an era of spreadable butter. Some readers may recall the wise words at the time of the late Maurice O’Donoghue. “Tourists,” quipped Maurice,” "are not like a pound of butter, to be spread evenly into all corners.”

Golfers raise funds in memory of Seani THIS week family and friends of Killarney man Seani McCarthy presented an impressive €12,385 to the Kerry Hospice Foundation. The sum was the proceeds of a hugely popular golf classic that took place in Seani’s memory on Mahony’s Point at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club on September 2. Seani, who passed away after a short illness, borne bravely, in September of 2015, was a keen golfer and member of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. On Monday, Seani’s wife Margaret and friends presented the proceeds of the event to Ted Moynihan, chairman, Kerry Hospice Foundation, and Pat Doolan, chairman, Killarney branch, Kerry Hospice Foundation, at a function in The Dromhall Hotel. “We decided that it would be a fitting remembrance to hold the golf classic in memory of Seani and contribute to the great work of this Kerry charity,” said Seani’s friend Brian Moriarty.

Autumn sunshine for Charlene and Padraig’s celebration BY EVE KELLIHER

E

VERY good wish to our colleague at Killarney Advertiser and KC Print Charlene Courtney who exchanged vows with Padraig Ahern recently. Charlene and Padraig, who are both from Faha, were wed in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Listry by Fr Kevin Sullivan. Breda Daly captured the big day on camera, including photoshoots outside the church, at Killarney Golf Club and at the reception venue. Both sets of parents, Catherine and Michael Courtney and Marie and Paddy Ahern, helped the newlyweds lead the celebrations at the reception, at the Ballygarry House Hotel. Charlene’s friends Catriona Fealy and Bridie Sheehan were her bridesmaids while Padraig’s brothers Brendan Ahern and Ger Ahern lent their support as best man and groomsman respectively. The couple’s daughters Tierna Ahern and Ella Ahern thoroughly

The bride looked stunning in a dress sourced in Finesse Bridal Boutique in Listowel while the flower girls’ dresses were made by Sheila Bennett in The Sewing Room, Killorglin. The bridal hairstyling was by Sandra Evans of Allure Salon, Killarney, with makeup by makeup artist Marilyn McSweeney. All revved up for Killarney Historic Rally A group at the launch of the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally on Sunday. IRELAND’S only event to cater solely for historic rally cars and night-stage rallying, the Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally was officially launched on Sunday evening at Scotts Hotel. Killarney and District Motor Club announced details of this year’s rally, which will run on Saturday, December 3, and will count as the first round of the 2017 Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Championship, final round of the 2016 Plasticbags.ie Southern Four Rally Championship and final round of the 2016 HRCR West Wales Rally Spares - Stage Masters Challenge. Event clerk of the course Kevin Flannery and his crew have built this year’s rally around the competitor and in doing so has selected a route of classic stages based around Killarney town, offering the competitor 110km of competitive stages, followed by short road kilometres allowing for an easy recce, Centralised service area at the event HQ and the popular feature of the final stage to be run in the darkness. “With the unfortunate cancellation of last year’s event, we decided to run this year as a exact replica. This makes both a labour and financial sense for us the organisers and should make it all the more attractive to our loyal competitors,” said Kevin. The event, which is worth millions to the local economy, will once again be hosted at The Gleneagle Hotel. There will be a ceremonial start on the Friday evening in Main Street, Killarney, at 7pm, while the real action gets underway on Saturday morning with the iconic “Molls Gap”, often rated by rally drivers as being the best and one of the most-challenging stages in the world. “Coolick”, the Kilcummin village stage is always a favourite, while “Anablatha” is a newly designed stage in the Gneeveguilla area, sections of which have been used in the past by the Rally of the Lakes. “Gortnagane,” which runs parallel to the main Rathmore/ Killarney road, is regarded as one of the most technical, narrow, and demanding stages of Killarney rallying. The second run, over Gortnagane, will be run under the cover of darkness. Entries remain open, see http://www. shannonsportsit.ie/evo/Login Regulations and further information available is available from http://www. killarneyanddistrictmotorclub.ie/

Want a flawless complexion?

Aging is unavoidable, but many people are looking to fight against the signs of aging, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

YOU might not be able to stop growing a year older, but unsightly wrinkles and fine lines do not have to be visible on your face. Wrinkles are a natural effect of aging, but Botox injections are coming to the rescue of women and men that desire to look younger and more vibrant. Having flawless skin that does not give away your age is possible with the help of Botox injections. Reduce fine lines and wrinkles The biggest benefit for using Botox is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you are looking for ways to appear younger without having to undergo a surgical procedure, Botox injections are extremely effective. They work by stopping muscle move-

ments in the face and allow for the appearance of wrinkles to disappear. Even though Botox is now primarily used for a cosmetic procedure, it still offers a variety of medical benefits and uses. It can be an ideal way to treat twitchy eyes or help individuals that are suffering with intense migraines. Even bladder issues and intense sweating can be treated with the use of Botox in small amounts. It is possible to treat a wide variety of health conditions with this toxin. It is not just used for cosmetic purposes alone. Telephone Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio for more information, 064-6632966

Grace Notes THE GIFT

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on how a gift unshared will lose its magic over time

AS THE Christmas season fast approaches we hear the word “gift” used almost every day. We buy and receive gifts to mark this very special time of year. We spend weeks, or even months, deciding who gets what and hoping that they will love whatever we get them. All this talk of giving and receiving gifts made me think about people's own gifts that have been bestowed on them since the day they were born. We often refer to a person's talent as a “gift” and if a person does not use this gift is it simply an unopened present that will sit under the tree from year to year, gathering dust? I have always said that everyone is entitled to do what they want with their talent, they should not be pushed to share it, but now my thinking has slightly changed. I still think that pushing someone to do something may not be the best approach but I do believe that very strong encouragement and guidance is vital in the development and sharing of one's

own natural talent, or gift. If you have the ability to create a thing of beauty from within yourself then surely the sharing of this creation can only bring you more joy and a feeling of accomplishment? Now I do not suggest that everyone needs to share their gifts on a huge scale. The sharing may simply be in the baking of a beautiful cake for a friend's birthday. You may have painted something and realise that this piece of art can touch many other people. Perhaps you are the person who always has a camera at special occasions and you have been told that you have a great knack for catching the true nature of people in a simple photograph. Are you the one who is always asked to sing a few bars at the local pub because you have the ability to transport people to another place and time with your voice? If you have a gift that is nicely wrapped up in little box then perhaps you should pass it on. A gift unshared will lose its magic over time if you don't. •Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 21:5-19: Luke presents Jesus as a prophet, capable of reading the signs of the times, and one who offered wise and insightful advice on how to cope with difficult times. Who are the people you see who act like this in the troubled times we live in today? Maybe you yourself have been a calming influence in the face of turmoil within your family, parish, church, workplace, or elsewhere. Can you claim that gift and give thanks for being such a person? Jesus alerts his listeners to the transitory nature of human grandeur and splendour. How have you been reminded of this truth? What lessons has this given you about life? In any walk of life troubles will come. Jesus encourages his listeners to stand firm in such circumstances, telling them ‘your endurance will win you your lives’. When you are in the midst of inner turmoil and/or outer trouble or opposition, what have you found gives you the strength and ability to endure?

ENDURANCE

John Byrne OSA, Veritas

AT SOME point we have all seen and heard someone shouting on the street or on the internet about the end of the world. You’d be forgiven for thinking that today’s Gospel is trying to achieve the same thing. We are reading the final chapters of Luke’s Gospel for Year C. Jesus is in Jerusalem and the passages we hear are talking about end times. The people gathered are obviously excited having seen how magnificent the Temple is, having come “up from the country” and Jesus is trying to calm them down. The time for excitement might not be just yet. Jesus reminds them, and us, that these things are short-lived and we should not be too bothered about “fine stonework” and “votive offerings”. These things do not last. Jesus tries to comfort the people regarding various crisis that will happen; the call is to take perspective, to look at the bigger picture. Endurance is the message of today’s Gospel. The people of Jerusalem will witness the destruction of the Temple, the disciples will face persecution, people of faith will have tough times ahead. Whatever crisis may come, Jesus is affirming people to keep going, to stay focused and not be afraid In the words of Michel de Verteuil: "Lord, when we are young we think that we become great through our achievements. Life has taught us the truth of Jesus.” Jane Mellett, Veritas

The Provocateur SILENCE IS CONSENT IN THE FACE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE THE Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award is a statement that all life is precious, that every person, no matter whose life it is, is of great value and each has invaluable dignity and every one is worth saving. This is the spirit and the values by which Hugh O’Flaherty lived and risked his own life to support and save thousands from Nazi execution and the gas chambers of World War II. This too is the values driving the Preda Foundation’s social workers who rescue those abused in jails and brothels and brings them to freedom and safety, free from the power of their abusers. Today, we have a grave situation in the Philippines where the spirit of Monsignor Hugh is needed more than ever. The truth is that state sanctioned executions of young people suspected of being drug users or dealers has reached a high of about 3500 murdered since June 30. We have to take a stand against these violations and stand for the value of life and due process of law and the principle that all are innocent until proven guilty. Silence is consent in the face of human rights abuse. We have to take a stand for human dignity and speak out for life and against death. Here, Ireland is opening it doors wider and has committed to relocate and to resettle 4,000 refugees and will continue to receiving 80 refugees a month. This is an enlightened action but Ireland can do more to help those fleeing oppression, war and dire poverty. Our mission in years past has been to go out to the developing countries to help the poor and the needy, the endangered and the downtrodden. Nowadays, they are here, coming to us in Ireland and in Europe. Our depth of compassion, empathy and self-sacrifice is challenged by the situation and how well we rise to meet it as Monsignor Hugh did. On this planet, my friends, we are all one, and we have the strength and the spirit to act as one in making this a better world today and for the next generation. Thank you of honouring them with this award.

HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS A NEW ORDER? So, Donald Trump is to be the 45th President of the United States. To be honest, I didn’t see it coming. At the beginning of the campaign, he spoke about building a wall along the US/Mexican border. Then he claimed the Mexicans would pay for it. I thought it was the daftest thing I had ever heard, but Trump got attention and he struck a nerve. I’m always struck on how seriously Americans take their elections. You see them queue patiently down the street and round the block waiting to cast their votes. The only other place I see people queuing to vote is in parts of Africa where the poorest of the poor are to be seen standing for hours in blazing heat to have their say. When Mr Trump’s victory was confirmed, and Hillary Clinton conceding soon after, Trump took to the stage at a fiery rally in his hometown of New York City to accept his victory at 7.45am GMT. Not so long ago, Trump was threatening to appoint a special prosecutor to enquire into Ms Clinton’s affairs. He had even

threatened to have her jailed. At the recent rally some of his supporters were heard to shout, “Lock her up.” Thankfully, it would appear Trump is likely to be magnanimous in victory. And that’s no bad thing. Maybe one of the things that helped Trump is that many Americans were simply tired of the same old faces. Perhaps they felt the “safe” hand s they had trusted had done nothing for them. Maybe they felt they had nothing to lose by bringing in fresh thinking, new ideas, a novel approach. Something similar caused Brexit. It was time for the old order to change. And maybe Trump won’t be the world earthquake so many of that old order fear. However, there were many Americans who had hoped for a first female president and now some have already cast aside their previous female candidate, Hillary Clinton, and are now endorsing another potential first female president - Michelle Obama.

Garden Magic Still plenty to keep us busy in the garden

We are lucky to have had no storms yet, but our trees and shrubs are becoming increasingly bare, says Debby Looney

IF WE plant with the seasons in mind, we can have some beautiful skeletons to look at. Take the corkscrew hazel, corylus avellana “Contorta”. The branches twist and turn in fantastical shapes, and are adorned with tassels much of the winter. A much-loved tree is the silver birch, its bright silvery white bark ghostly in the garden. Other plants to consider are grasses, such as various types of miscanthus, whose flowers remain fluffy throughout winter, or perennials such as teasels and eryngiums. Dogwoods in various colours are also a great addition, particularly if you have a very wet area in the garden. Now we have had some frost, the summer pots are well and truly gone. There is nothing more inviting than a pot either side of the front door. Use foliage plants to bring colour, small variegated euonymus, cordyline and conifers are great, along with heathers. Ornamental cabbages thrive in the cold, and one of my favourites, trailing

pansies, are also very hardy. If you are planting cyclamen, bear in mind they don’t like a lot of wet. Plant them with the top of the bulb a little above the soil line to prevent them from rotting. Now is a good time for setting winter onions and garlic. You will have a nice early crop. Sowing the peace, Kelvedon Wonder, can also be done now, especially in a cold frame or glasshouse. You will have peas at least a month earlier next year! Pak choi is also happy in a polytunnel or glasshouse, as is perpetual spinach. Hardwood cuttings can be taken at this time of year. Fruit bushes are suitable, as are many shrubs, climbers and roses. Take a piece of a stem of the current years growth about the length of a pencil. Cut just below a pair of buds at the bottom, dip in rooting powder and simply push into some soft soil, either in a pot if you are only taking a few or in a prepared trench in the garden.

First-time buyer week in Kerry BANK OF IRELAND will host ‘First Time Buyer Week’ in its Kerry branches from Monday, November 14. The week will feature information and tips for first time buyers who are seeking to purchase a home including guidance on the information currently available about the new Help to Buy tax incentive for First Time Buyers published in the recent Budget. Mortgage advisors will be on hand throughout the week to provide information for those who are considering purchasing their first home.

LOCK UP AND LIGHT UP YOUR HOMES THE Kerry Joint Policing Committee is encouraging homeowners to ‘Lock Up and Light Up’ their homes over the winter period to deter burglars. It’s part of a nationwide campaign to encourage homeowners to be more security conscious. “Burglaries traditionally rise during the longer winter evenings and nights,” said Chief Superintendent Cadogan. “A number of simple measures can help to deter burglars such as using timers on lights if your home is unoccupied, locking all doors and windows, storing keys away from windows and letterboxes and using home alarm systems.” ‘There has been a fall in the number of burglaries in the Kerry Division – down 59% to date this year compared to the same period last year – which is due to a number of factors included the Garda’s Operation Thor and increased awareness and vigilance in communities. But we want people to continue to be aware of the risks and take the necessary precautions,’ said the Chief Superintendent.

VW PULL OUT OF THE WRC VW’S RECENT surprise announcement that they are pulling out of the WRC at the end of the season presents an early opportunity for the new Citroen WRC Team of Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle and Craig Breen/Martin Scott. Citroen are running a full WRC programme next year with an all-new car coupled with a strong Irish line up. 2017 will be a fantastic year for Irish rally fans. Sebastian Ogier, WRC Driver’s Champion for the past four years, all of which have been with VW is currently without a car for next year. With the other top two teams of Ford and Citroen already committed to their 2017 driver line-up, it will be interesting to see if Ogier can get a competitive car for the 2017 season. All eyes will be on the season opener in Monte Carlo, January 20-22.

Gardai and council urge Kerry road users to be safe and be seen this winter THE Kerry Joint Policing Committee is calling on all road users in Kerry to exercise care over the winter months and to ‘Be Safe and Be Seen’ on the county’s roads. The committee has encouraged the use of high visibility clothing and is asking all road users to ensure lights are fully functional on their bicycles, motorcycles and vehicles. Speaking at a meeting of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee on Monday, the Chief Superintendent of the Kerry Garda Division, Con Cadogan, said: “An Garda Síochána and Kerry County Council and the members of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee are asking people to wear high-visibility clothing at this time of the year when natural light is reduced. You cannot expect other road-users to see you if you are not visible to them – wearing a high-vis vest can make a life-saving difference. “We would also ask motorists to check their lights are working properly as driving with defective lights is both unacceptable and highly dangerous.” The chairman of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the aim of the ‘Be Safe and Be Seen’ campaign – which is run by An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority – is to reduce road deaths and accidents on the county’s roads. “Sadly we have had six fatalities so far this year on Kerry roads and we don’t want the horror of such an incident to be visited on any more families. Everyone on the road has a role to play in slowing down, driving with care and ultimately reducing road accidents and deaths,” said Cllr Kelleher.

Michelle Mullane, Road Safety Officer, Kerry County County Council; Brian Looney, Kerry County Council; John Breen, Director of Services, Kerry County Council; Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan; Cllr Niall Kelleher, Chairman, Kerry Joint Policing Committee; Cllr Pa Daly, Kerry Joint Policing Committee. 11.11.16 Killarney Advertiser

Iconic ‘boys’ toys collection’ set for auction THE term "like a kid in a candy store" captures a feeling that resonates with all of us when looking at the exhibits of RM Sotheby's Duemila Route Auction, knowing it was all owned by the same person. The sheer magnitude of this collection will overwhelm you – 430 cars, 150 motorcycles, 60 boats and racing hydrofoils, 117 bicycles, bobsleds, and so many other diverse big boy's toys. But the backstory is as intriguing as the collection itself. The collection was the property of Italian Luigi Compiano and was confiscated by the Italian Government to recoup €14 million owed in back taxes. Compiano had inherited the family's security companies in 2010, employing 700 people. When the authorities moved in, they also seized Compiano's numerous villas and holiday houses. Apart from this collection being conservatively worth €20 million, when authorities seized the company, there was €22 million in cash in the safe. That's gone and it appears the empire has crumbled. Apart from the old adage "never piss off the tax man," it also shows that Compiano didn't do things by halves. As you can see from the collection, he knew his boys toys. The jumble of lots contains at least a dozen different collections of historically significance. Hence the back story is very relevant because it means you're unlikely to get the history of any of these cars and motorcycles or the warm and fuzzy anecdotes which normally accompany such machinery...and as the authorities want the money NOW, the whole lot will sell on the fall of the hammer. Restoring a toys provenance might be the fun part but it makes a good story in its own right.

Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life.

Future looks bright for junior champs Fossa John Evans’ young team have plenty of potential, writes Adam Moynihan

FOSSA deserve a lot of credit for responding so positively to what must have been a challenging month or so. Preparing for your club’s first every county final, then drawing after extra time, then having to wait three weeks to have another crack certainly isn’t the easiest way to go about it and you would have thought that an experienced Beale outfit would be more likely to handle this kind of unusual situation. On the contrary, it was John Evans’ charges who seized the

opportunity last Sunday and cruised to a comprehensive ten-point victory. A goal from Paudie Clifford (who also found the net twice in the drawn game) fired Fossa into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead early on and they never looked back. They went in at the break four points to the good and that was as close as Beale got for the remainder of the afternoon. When Man of the Match Tadgh O’Shea goaled midway through the second to open up an eight-point lead the game was

Squash season gets off to a flying start in Killarney

THE 2016/2017 squash season kicked off in earnest with the conclusion of the October competition last week. Lots of participants ensured that there were plenty of entertaining games throughout the month before eventually being whittled down to the last two teams. This month’s competition saw Michael P O’Donoghue and Donnagh Crowley lead their charges through the group stages and reach the final. In the first game Laurence Kelly had a little too much for young Ruairi Counihan winning 3-2 in a great game. The next game saw Paudie O’Connor emerge victorious over his namesake Mags. A great match took place but Paudie marked his return to the courts with a 3-1 win and in doing so put Michael P’s team into a 2-0 lead. Next up we had Ray O’Callaghan and Alan Sheahan. This was an epic battle with both players emptying the tank in a bid to retrieve each other’s shots. However, Ray’s composure enabled him to close out the match and secure the first point for team Donnagh. The penultimate game of the night paired Matt O’Connor and Liam Shine with each other, both of them experienced players and they showed that with some great shot making. An extremely close match that went right to the wire before Matt took the spoils, 3-2 the final result here. With the overall result standing at 2-2, it meant the final duel of the night saw the two skippers battle it out. Some quality squash between the two took place before Donnagh stamped his authority on the match and won out on a 3-0 result. In so doing he also sealed the overall match for his team, Congratulations to all involved. Thanks again to O’Keefe’s Oil Rathmore for sponsoring the October competition. Finally, training for juveniles continues on Friday nights at 7.30pm. If you are interested in playing squash, pop in to the Aquila Club for details on how to get involved. All are welcome!

as good as won, and although the North Kerry lads kept battling away they could do nothing to close the gap. O’Shea added two more points in stoppage time to take his tally to 1-6 and Fossa ran out 2-12 to 0-8 winners. 2016 has been a very promising year for the men in red and black. Some excellent performances in Division 4 of the County League saw them end the campaign joint top with Na Gaeil and earn promotion to Division 3. In fact, they could finish up with two county titles this year; they face the Tralee side on Sunday in Milltown to decide who will be crowned league champions. They won ten of their eleven league games by an average winning margin of 5.8, the only blight on their record a heavy defeat to Na Gaeil when promotion was already guaranteed. They lost to Dromid in the opening round of the championship (first round winners advance to the Junior Premier Championship, which Glenbeigh Glencar won, and losers compete

in the confusingly named Junior Championship) but their run in this particular section of the tournament more than made up for that. Convincing victories over Lispole (by five points), Castlegregory (by eight) and Scart (by six) brought them to the final, and they showed great character to eventually get the better of Beale. Fossa have a very youthful-looking line up with the likes of Matthew Rennie, Paudie Clifford and Tadgh O’Shea in particular earning plaudits. David Clifford will also be eligible next year so it’ll be interesting to see how he transitions to senior football. Old heads like Colin Myers, Fintan Coffey, Lorcan Daly and captain Donald O'Sullivan provide experience and with a former inter-county manager like John Evans at the helm, there should be no limit to their ambitions. They certainly seem well-equipped to tackle Division 3 and if their opponents in the league final can challenge for the Junior Premier (Na Gaeil took Glenbeigh Glencar to a replay in the final), there’s no reason Fossa can’t too.

At the presentation of prizes of the Gleneagle Squash Club first monthly competition of the new season sponsored by O'Keeffe's Oils, Rathmore, were front from left, Connie Doyle, John McCarthy, Kevin Smith and Oskar Przyborski. Seated from left are Ruairi and Brendan Counihan, Ray O'Callaghan, John D. O'Keeffe, sponsor, Donagh Crowley, captain of winning team, Laurence Kelly, Matt O'Connor and Bridget McConigley. Standing from left are Joe Carroll, Bernice Enright, Mike Crowley, Chairman, Eamon O'Donoghue, Liam Shine, Alan Sheehan, Ger Foley, Michael Buckley, Marta Przyborski, Sean McCarthy, Mike O'Donoghue, Stanley Wade, Jack Buckley and Margaret O'Connor. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

FIELD OF DREAMS IN SOLDIER FIELD CHICAGO Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the week in sport at home and abroad

IT ALL came right in Chicago for the Irish rugby team where they beat the All Blacks on Saturday last for the very first time on a 40-29 score line thus breaking a 111-year-old hoodoo. The All Blacks, the most feared team in world rugby had gone the last 18 games unbeaten. Winner takes all and bragging rights to go with it. No wonder The Fields of Athenry sounded so sweet in the Windy City and in so many clubs and pubs around Ireland. So Joe Schmidt gets the well-deserved plaudits justifying his team selection. The whole team were stars, but especially Best, Furlong, Sexton, Heaslip, Murray and McGrath. This will give great confidence for the season ahead in the Six Nations. DR CROKES BID FOR MUNSTER FINAL Dr Crokes have a home game this weekend when they meet Loughmore-Castleiney in the Munster club SFC semi-final. Throw-in is at 2pm. The Tipperary champions defeated Moyle Rovers 1-9 to 1-6 in the recent Tipp county final. Crokes have had the benefit of a quarter-final clash against Kilmurry-Ibrickane, the Clare champions and came through that with flying colours. The Tipp champions are backboned by hurlers especially the

All Ireland winning McGrath brothers. Cian Hennessy is another very useful forward scoring 1-2 in the county final. Crokes did have a game last weekend when they easily defeated Gneeveguilla 2-13 to 0-09 in the O Donoghue Cup semi-final. Crokes will be without Johnny Buckley the team captain who suffered fractured ribs in the Clare game. Micheál Burns is a likely starter at wing forward. O’DONOGHUE CUP In the O’Donoghue Cup Dr Crokes play the winners of the second semi final, Spa V Rathmore, which is fixed for Saturday, November 19. The final will be on Sunday, December 4, in Fitzgerald Stadium. CONGRATULATIONS FOSSA Last Sunday saw Fossa defeat Beale in Austin Stack Park in the Castleisland Mart Junior Football Championship 2016 final replay, Fossa 2-12 Beale 0-8. Congrats to Fossa on this great win for the Con Brosnan Cup. No doubt about their prominence in this replay. Tadhg O’Shea was the man-of-the- match. What a great year Fossa have had.

KERRY GAA CONVENTION NOMINATIONS Tim Murphy is set to be the new Chairman of the Kerry County Committee, When nominations closed on Wednesday, (nominees had until 5pm today to confirm their candidacy) the Brosna clubman was the only nominee to replace the outgoing Chairman, Patrick O'Sullivan whose very successful five-year term in the chair comes to an end at the upcoming County Convention to be held in The Rose Hotel, Tralee on December 14. Tim Murphy, an engineer by profession, has been Development Officer for the past five years and during that time has overseen the major development and construction of the Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence at Currans, which is due to become operational next Spring. He has also led the recent redevelopment of Austin Stack Park, a project that is ongoing. Prior to becoming County Development Officer in 2012 he served as Chairman of the Brosna Club for 11 years. Eamonn Whelan will take over the role of Development Officer. He is unopposed for the position having served a very successful five-year term as Coaching and Games Officer. Prior to that, the St Senan's Clubman was involved in Bord na nÓg. Terence Houlihan of Laune Rangers will fill the Coaching and Games officer post. He served as Secretary of Laune Rangers for five years, and has been involved in a coaching capacity both with his club,

with the Kerry South U15 Development squad for two years and with the Kerry Coaching and Games Committee for the past twelve months. The Secretary’s position is a full time post the Children’s Officer is appointed on the nomination of the outgoing Executive. All other Officers have been returned unopposed. DUBLIN FINAL It was a case of rolling back the years on Saturday last when I attended the Dublin SFC county final where St Vincent’s defeated Castleknock 15 points to 10.I lost four championships semi-finals to Vincent’s, two with Erin’s Hope and two with UCD. We did manage to defeat them in the 1972 senior league final. They have won 27 senior championships since 1949. The late Heffo won something like 13 football and four hurling championships when Vincent’s were unbeatable. Even though the sides were level on seven points each at half-time on Saturday last there was never any doubt about the eventual outcome. Diarmuid Connolly had a quiet enough game, but his accuracy from foot passing especially to Tomás Quinn helped to establish superiority on the scoreboard. It meant the cup went to Marino once more, even if they had to play with 14 men for the final quarter, when Ger Brennan had been sent off.

Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy LAST weekend was yet another epic weekend of rugby. It’s always great to hear the radios buzzing about rugby on a Monday morning and everyone on the street chatting about the weekend’s results. And what a feast of rugby we had last weekend. Stunning wins for both Munster and Ireland last weekend meant that Rugby received prime news coverage and almost set social media on fire! First up, Munster took on the Ospreys at Irish Independent Park in cork on Friday night. The team which faced the Welsh side was missing the majority of Munster’s Irish internationals due to the Autumn Internationals kicking off last weekend. However, Peter O’Mahony led the charge and the likes of David ‘Killer’ Kilcoyne absolutely lit up the pitch with a man of the match performance and getting people The Killarney Rugby Club under-16s who played last weekend. justifiably asking why he isn’t in the Internadoo, Ireland beat reigning World champions ture at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, the 19th tional squad for the Autumn Internationals. Killarney RFC

SENIORS The seniors travelled to Cork to take on Mitchelstown RFC in the latest round

of the Munster Junior League - Division 3. This was Killarney’s first outing in almost a month due to fixtures postponements and the lads had been training very hard over the interim. Mitchelstown, who are second in the league following wins over Bantry and Dungarvan was not going to be an easy road trip for any team in the division. The visitors were ultimately unlucky to lose the match, with the home side winning on a scoreline of 25 points to 19 points. Captain Ger Moynihan scored Killarney’s only try with Paudie Sheahan converting. Paudie also added 4 penalties for the visiting team. Killarney are certainly improving and next up we travel to Fermoy in the second round of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. Best of luck lads. U16’S Killarney U16s played Tralee in Aghadoe, on Saturday in our fourth league game of the season, Although it was a bright and sunny day, it was also very cold and exceptionally windy, which added to the challenge of playing probably the strongest team in the league. As now seems to be customary, we conceded a try within two minutes, two more scores were conceded within the first thirteen minutes, making things look very ominous at 15-0 down, Killarney were awarded a penalty and from a line out in the corner with a planned move Richard Wallace assisted Craig McKenzie-Vass, to touch down in the corner, Again Tralee scored under the posts leaving the score 22-5 at the half. Killarney started the second period a bit brighter, and playing a penalty advantage, Cian Murphy put in a fantastic cross field kick that Adam Walsh gathered for a scintillating finish in the corner (22-10), In quick succession Tralee scored two more tries (32-10), with time nearly up, Adam McSweeney barged up the middle from a ruck, but was tackled short, not held he quickly got to his feet to dot down between the sticks. Final score 32-17 Without doubt, this team can now compete with the best and in spite of losing this match, the progression of this bunch of players is tangible, Well done lads, The three tries scored were all well executed, theres plenty more in this team, well done also to the new players who made an impact off the bench. Next game is away to Listowel next Saturday KO 11am. Many thanks to Rose & George McKenzie - Vass for their fantastic sponsorship of a new set of jerseys. MINIS Our minis continue to train every Saturday at Aghadoe. All new players, boys and girls are more than welcome to come along and give rugby a ‘try’. We were in Listowel 2 weeks ago for the first blitz of the season and will host our very own blitz on Saturday, the 26th of November, where we will host teams from Kenmare, Castleisland and Iveragh in Cahersiveen. Killarney Cycling Club Next Tuesday 15th November marks the first anniversary of the tragic death of Killarney Cycling Club member Ed Duggan. To mark the occasion Killar-

ney CC are intending to have a “Cycle in memory of Ed” on Sunday next 13th November. Our cycle will take us to the site of the accident which has been marked by a “ghost bike” at Scart Cross where we intend to have a few moments of reflection. Then we proceed to his place of rest in Firies and on to his home where we will commemorate the occasion by planting one of his favourite trees. Accidental and tragic loss of life is always and inevitably hard to take by family and friends. All we can hope to achieve is to comfort Ed’s family and we will comfort each other in a mark of solidarity.

HURLING Continues for 6 to 14 year olds between 6 and 7pm on Thursday nights in Killarney Community College €3 per night. EAST KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP Following a marvellous victory over Rathmore in the earlier round Kilcummin played Currow in the semi-final in Rathmore on Thursday last under lights. This was an enthralling game despite the inclement weather and although we were trailing by 4 points at the final whistle the players can take solace from their fine performance. Goals by David Gleeson and Gearoid Kerins in the first half saw us trailing by 3 points at half time 2-4 to 2-7. Currow were very impressive in the third quarter and added two further goals and some fine points to lead by 4-12 to 2-5 at one stage. However our players put in a massive last 15 minutes scoring 2-7 and conceding just a single point. Gearoid Kerins added a third goal and Conor McCarthy brought the team within a single score but it wasn’t to be and Currow held on to progress to the final. Well done to players and mentors. GAA LOTTO There was no winner on Sunday November 6th, 2016. Jackpot now €7,000.

Dr Crokes

O’DONOGHUE CUP SEMI FINAL Played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday November 5th Dr Crokes 2-13 Gneeveguilla 0-9 Despite our ten point victory this was not a one sided game. Our defenders were regularly called on to defend stoutly against our opponents. This however is a Gneeveguilla team intranisition and we were able to get through for vital scores at different times during the game. The teams exchanged points in the first five minutes but the rest of the first quarter belonged to us as we added on a goal and four points without reply for a seven point lead. The teams exchanged points on three occasions in the second quarter to leave us 1-8 to 0-4 in front at the interval. A goal by Jordan Kiely five minutes after half time, more or less ended the game as a contest. We were now ten points clear. In fairness to our opponents they never gave up. At the final whistle we were winners by 2-13 to 0-9. Team and Scorers: Alan Kelly; John Payne, Mike Moloney; Fionn Fitzgerald; Luke Quin, Alan O’Sullivan, Mike Milner; Ambrose O’Donovan; Daithi Casey 0-1, Michéal Burns 0-3, Colm Cooper 1-3 (0-3 frees), Bryan O’Shea 0-1, Jordan Kiely 1-4 (0-1 free), Kieran O’Leary; Tony Brosnan 0-1. AGM The AGM of Fossa GAA Club has been fixed for Friday December 9th at 8:00pm SOCIAL Fossa GAA Social will be held on Tuesday December 27th at the East Avenue Hotel. SENIORS: Kerry County Junior Football Champions 2016. It wasn’t all a dream, it did really happen. On Sunday November 6th, our red and black shirted heroes took to the pitch at Austin Stack Park and beat North Kerry side Beale, winning a thrilling replay 2-12 to 0-08. A first County title in our 46 year history, it was poignant to see the tears of joy on the faces of former greats on the famed County grounds after the game. These had strived unsuccessfully to reach this summit over the decades. In the warm up on Sunday Matt went over on his ankle, and though he lined out at the start, had to be replaced early on by Kenneth Clifford. Paddy Sheehan and Colin Davidson, who both missed a good part of the season through injury started on Sunday and did not let the selectors down. The decisive scores in this replay were the two Fossa goals. Fintan Coffey climbed high to pull down Colin Myers’ kick out in the 12th minute, sent long into captain Domnhall O’Sullivan, on to Mikey O’Shea whose quick hands found Paudie Clifford who made no mistake. Four points between the sides at the break 1-04 to 0-03. But Fossa had surrendered an even bigger lead in the drawn game and Beale had a strong wind at their backs in the second half. Fossa however stuck to their task and maintained their possession and attack rate, and the clincher was the goal from Man of the Match Tadgh O Shea in the 15th minute of the 2nd half. Paudie Clifford won possession inside his own parallelogram, soloed out to the 45, sent a long ball up the left side to Domnhall who made ground before passing on to Tadgh who buried it in the far corner of the net. Winning Team Colin Myers, Colm Walsh, Anthony Wharton, Darragh Rice, Paddy Sheehan, Mark Dennehy, Daniel O’Keeffe, Fintan Coffey(0-03), Colin Davidson, Matt Rennie, Lorcan Daly, Paudie Clifford,(1-00) Tadgh O Shea (1-06 3f), Mikey O’Shea, Domnhall O;Sullivan(Captain)(0-02f).
