Killarney town centre witnessed an unusual level of Garda activity on Tuesday night, with several Garda vans and cars arriving at the Courthouse with sirens blaring.

This Garda presence was a direct result of a major drug smuggling operation that unfolded over the previous weekend.

Four men were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning on suspicion of assisting an organised crime group in importing controlled drugs. The men, who have addresses in Serbia,

Major Garda activity following drug smuggling operation

Manchester, Derry, and Glasgow, appeared in Killarney District Court.

The operation began with Gardaí and Customs Services acting on confidential information that suggested suspicious activity by four men.

Investigations revealed that a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) was transported to Glen Pier and fitted with two high-powered

engines. A second RIB was located in Portmagee.

On Sunday, one of the RIBs was moved to Meenogahane pier in north Kerry. The four men were observed boarding the boat and heading out to sea shortly after midnight.

Upon their return, the men were observed disembarking and loading items

into a Land Rover Discovery. It is believed that the men were waiting offshore for a "mothership" to drop off a consignment of drugs in the water.

Gardaí recovered several items from the vehicle, including night vision equipment, GPS devices, seven mobile phones, and an encryption device, but no drugs have been recovered to date.

Michael Healy-Rae set for junior ministerial role in new government

Michael Healy-Rae has announced that he will accept a junior ministerial position in the forthcoming government.

His comments came on Wednesday morning following the news that a coalition deal had been established to support Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Regional Independent Group in forming the new administration.

“It’s fair to say that role will be going in my direction, but as for what that is going to be, that is obviously at the direction of the incoming taoiseach,” said the Kilgarvan man.

"It's fair to say that there is an arrangement in place where there will be a role at a department at a minister of state level for the Healy-Raes.”

KILLARNEY BY-PASS

While there is no mention of any national road project on the new programme

for government which was published on Thursday, Michael Healy-Rae confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that there is another option to pursue in relation to the much needed Killarney by-pass.

The National Development Plan is set

to be updated by the new government in June or July this year.

The local project will be upgraded to what will be known as the Kerry-Cork Economic Corridor and the Healy Raes are set to exert their influence on the how the NDP will be delivered.

Mayor Healy-Rae’s key role in negotiations

Mayor of Killarney Maura HealyRae has been credited with playing a crucial role in political negotiations that secured a cabinet position for her uncle Michael HealyRae and a significant role for her father, Danny Healy-Rae.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Michael Healy-Rae said:

“As soon as the first votes were counted, we started negotiations. Maura’s involvement was crucial in ensuring Kerry’s priorities were brought to the table.”

Maura Healy-Rae’s position as Mayor of Killarney Municipal District mean that issues affecting Kerry – and particularly Killarney – will have a direct voice in Dublin.

Main Street to be made one-way street

Killarney Municipal District councillors have unanimously approved plans for significant public realm improvements to Main Street and Kenmare Place in the town centre.

The proposed changes, outlined in a report from Kerry County Council, include converting a section of Main Street into a one-way street. This change will improve traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety.

Specific improvements include the creation of new and expanded bus set-down areas, including a new area outside the Plaza Hotel and an extended area outside St. Mary's Church. The scheme also includes revisions the introduction of a raised uncontrolled crossing, and im-

proved pedestrian access with wider footpaths and enhanced landscaping.

The council meeting heard that several businesses in the area welcomed the proposed improvements, while acknowledging the need for construction works to be carried out during off-peak times to minimise disruption.

Kerry County Council will now proceed with the planning and implementation of these public realm improvements in accordance with all relevant planning regulations.

Major upgrade for St. Francis Special School

Minister for Education and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, has announced that initial project approval has been granted for a significant expansion of St. Francis Special School in Beaufort.

The development will see the addition of five new classrooms, a sensory room, a music room, a cookery room, and a withdrawal room to the school's existing facilities.

Minister Foley said:"This exciting new development will provide vital support for the exceptional work that takes place every day at St. Francis Special School. It is part of a broader commitment to enhancing special education,

which has seen the approval of 16 new special schools and the doubling of special classes across the country to over 3,300."

In a separate development under the Pathfinder school programme, the existing buildings at St. Francis Special School are undergoing significant upgrades.

These works will see the school retrofitted and upgraded to a Building Energy Rating (BER) of B, with the incorporation of renewable heating solutions. This project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

St Francis'

€1.6m

allocated to Active Travel Projects in Killarney

Minister for Education and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, has confirmed that €3.35 million will be provided for Active Travel projects in County Kerry this year.

Notably, €1.61 million of this funding will be allocated to projects within the wider Killarney district.

This investment will support the development of improved walking and cycling infrastructure across the region, promoting healthier lifestyles and providing residents with more sustainable transportation options.

A key focus of this funding will be the Active Travel Scheme for Park Road in Kil-

larney, which will receive €1 million. This investment will contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance walking and cycling facilities in the area.

A further €350,000 has been allocated under the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme, and €100,000 has been earmarked for the Killarney local transport plan.

Minister Foley expressed her enthusiasm for this investment, stating, "I am delighted to confirm €3.35 million will be provided for Active Travel projects in Kerry this year. Better walking and cycling facilities can boost people’s transport options and promote healthier lifestyles.”

Hotels sector welcomes VAT reduction to 9% Community input sought on vacant Dereen land parcel

Brian Lawlor, Group General Manager of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection and Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, has welcomed the announcement that the VAT rate for the hospitality sector will return to 9% following the next budget in October.

The decision was confirmed as part of government formation talks and comes after significant lobbying from the hospitality industry, which has been calling for relief amid rising operational costs and business closures.

“We welcome the government's decision to reduce the VAT rate on food back to 9%. This has been a long-standing request from the hospitality sector, and it's encouraging to see elected representatives responding to the concerns of industry stakeholders," Mr. Lawlor said. "Businesses have faced significant challenges in recent times, with many sadly having to close due to rising costs. We have consistently advocated for a VAT reduction as a measure to offer stability, support, and renewed confidence for businesses as they plan for the future.”

Industry bodies including the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation, Restau-

rants Association of Ireland, Vintners Federation of Ireland, Irish Hotels Federation, and Licensed Vintners Association have been actively pressing the government to reinstate the reduced VAT rate, which was originally introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funding sought for Ballycasheen School traffic

improvements

At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Martin Grady highlighted the ongoing parking and traffic issues at Ballycasheen National School and called for an update on planned improvements.

In response, a council official confirmed that the school has submitted a planning application to address these concerns.

The application includes plans for a new school car park, designated areas for school buses and car drop-offs.

The official noted that the school has received full planning approval for these improvements. However, the implementation of the project depends upon the school securing funding from its designated authority.

Kerry County Council is seeking the community's input on the future of a vacant land parcel in Derreen.

The public consultation aims to identify the most suitable use for the 1.2-hectare site located between Killarney Celtic and Killarney Legion GAA sports clubs.

terest through a public consultation. Interested parties can submit proposals outlining their vision for the development and use of the land via Kerry County Council’s Consultation Platform: https://consult.kerrycoco.ie/en/content/ lands-derreen-killarney-public-call-expressions-interest

South Kerry Jobs Fair returns to Great Southern in February

Preparations are already underway for this year's South Kerry Jobs Fair, which is scheduled to take place on February 13 at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney.

The event promises to feature a diverse range of job opportunities, as well as valuable workshops covering topics such as CV tailoring, upskilling, and interview techniques.

The South Kerry Jobs Fair has consistently proven successful, attracting both job seekers and employers in significant numbers.

Last year, over 1,500 people attended, and this year, the event is expected to attract companies from a broad range of sectors including hospitality, healthcare, engineering, education, and finance.

The event is organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG.

Joanne Griffin, SKDP's Enterprise Officer said: "The success of the past two

years is a testament to the high demand for skilled workers in the region."

"In addition to the companies offering employment opportunities, there are also a range of other service and education providers who can offer valuable opportunities to those attending," she added.

Griffin highlighted the popularity of the advice workshops, which provide job seekers with up-to-date information and guidance to improve their job search prospects.

SKDP CEO Noel Spillane emphasized the event's significance for both job seekers and employers.

"The Jobs Fair provides an ideal platform for job seekers to engage with a wide array of employers and for businesses to showcase their vacancies to a large pool of potential employees," said Spillane. He noted that many businesses in the region are currently facing recruitment challenges and that the Jobs Fair offers a valuable opportunity to connect with potential employees and fill open positions.

The event will be open to the public from 10:30am to 1:30pm, with no prior registration required for job seekers. Workshops will run concurrently throughout the event, commencing at 10:45am. Job seekers are encouraged to bring copies of their CV to the event.

Second snow storm looms

Killarney Municipal District councillors have called on Kerry County Council to be prepared for a potential second winter storm, with weather forecasts predicting a significant drop in temperatures and the possibility of snow showers either late next week or early into the following week.

At a recent meeting, councillors praised the efforts of council staff who worked tirelessly during the previous snow event earlier this month to clear roads and ensure public safety.

However, councillors also stressed the importance of proactive measures. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O'Callaghan suggested that a national agreement should be in place to allow for the deployment of snow plough from areas not affected by se-

vere weather to assist counties experiencing heavy snowfall.

He pointed to the recent storm that impacted parts of Ireland while leaving other areas unaffected, highlighting the potential for inter-county cooperation in such situations.

Councillors emphasised the need for adequate resources, including a sufficient number of snow ploughs and the potential engagement of contractors already working for the council, such as those involved in hedge trimming, to assist in snow clearance operations.

While the current forecast predicts milder weather in the immediate future, the potential for a significant cold snap and snowfall has prompted calls for increased preparedness and a coordinated response from local authorities.

Covered bus shelter approved for Mission Road in Killarney

Killarney residents will soon have a more comfortable wait for the Flightlink Dublin Airport Coach thanks to the approval of a new covered bus shelter on Mission Road.

At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Marie Moloney raised concerns about the lack of shelter for passengers waiting for the service at the bus stop on Mission Road. Moloney pointed out the inconvenience and discomfort caused by waiting in inclement weather and the potential for passengers to arrive at their destination drenched.

Update on affordable housing efforts

At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, councillors raised concerns about the availability of affordable housing in the area.

Cllr John O'Donoghue inquired about the council's plans for providing affordable housing options in Killarney.

In response, a council official outlined the ongoing efforts to deliver affordable housing in line with the government's ‘Housing for All’ strategy.

The council will assess potential projects on a case-by-case basis and submit suitable proposals to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for consideration under the Affordable Housing Fund.

Cllr Brendan Cronin sought an update on the council's application for the construction of an Affordable Housing Scheme in Killarney.

housing targets and is exploring all available avenues to increase the supply of affordable homes.

Mayor Maura Healy-Rae inquired about the pre-allocation housing process, specifically the number of applicants awaiting property allocation and the timelines involved.

The official explained that the council utilises a Choice Based Letting (CBL) system for most housing allocations. However, exceptions are made for specific categories like disability and emergency situations.

The official acknowledged that delays can sometimes occur in securing keys to properties due to factors such as ongoing repairs, construction timelines for new developments, and unforeseen issues with turnkey acquisitions.

The council will be undertaking the necessary civil works to facilitate the installation, including the construction of the bus stop base, the installation of ducting and power supply. The council is currently awaiting confirmation from the NTA regarding the funding for these civil works.

Once this confirmation is received, the project to install the new covered bus shelter on Mission Road will proceed.

In response, a council official confirmed that the National Transport Authority (NTA) has approved the installation of a covered bus shelter at this location. An NTA contractor will be responsible for providing the shelter.

Concerns over future of current hospital sites

With the opening of the new Killarney hospital imminent, concerns have been raised about the future of the existing District Hospital and St. Columbanus Home.

Fears have been expressed that these historic buildings could fall into disrepair or dereliction once they are vacated.

At this week’s meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Mayor Maura Healy-Rae reiterated these concerns.

She called on the Council to write to the HSE requesting information and details on their plans for the future use of both sites once the new hospital is operational. While the HSE has committed to providing a Minor Injuries Clinic in Killarney, the location for this service has yet to be revealed.

Healy-Rae told the meeting that the soonto-be-vacated buildings would make ideal locations for a Minor Injuries Clinic

The official confirmed that the council is actively working with Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) and developers to deliver

As of December 31, five properties in the Killarney Municipal District were allocated to applicants, with key-handover expected in the coming months.

Killarney quickest driving test turnaround nationally

New figures released by the Road Safety Authority have revealed that Killarney boasts the quickest turnaround time in the country for learner drivers awaiting their driving test.

In Killarney, drivers can expect to wait an average of 13 weeks for their test, while in Tralee, the wait time is slightly longer at 14 weeks. The national targeted waiting time for a driving test is supposed to be ten to 12 weeks.

23 new homes planned for Barraduff

Xdev Real Estate Ltd. has submitted a planning application to Kerry County Council for the construction of 23 new homes in Barraduff.

Kerry FC sticks with Conor McCarthy as team manager

Kerry FC has confirmed that Conor McCarthy will remain First Team Manager for the 2025 season.

The Killarney man, who took the helm in 2024, has strengthened his coaching staff with the appointment of Chris Collopy as his new assistant manager. Collopy, a former coach with Galway United where he helped secure a topfive finish in the Premier Division, brings significant expertise to Kerry FC. The club also acknowledged the departing James Sugrue, Shane Guthrie, and Del O’Shea for their contributions over the past two seasons.

While they step away from first-team duties, the club will support Sugrue in

obtaining his coaching badges for future League of Ireland opportunities.

Cormac Buckley joins the team as the new strength and conditioning coach.

A former Kerry FC player himself, Buckley brings both playing experience and coaching expertise to the role.

"I want to thank Shane, Del and James for their hard work," said McCarthy.

"We're excited to have Chris and Cormac on board. They're dedicated and already making a positive impact. I look forward to the season ahead."

Emergency shelter for homeless person

A homeless person who was found living in a tent during the recent snowstorm in Killarney National Park has now been provided with emergency accommodation.

At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr John O'Donoghue raised concerns about homelessness in the town, inquiring about the number of rough sleepers and the measures being taken to address the issue.

A council official acknowledged the challenges of providing homeless services, noting that many individuals experiencing homelessness face complex issues beyond simply needing a place to stay.

The official highlighted that a multi-agency approach is often required to address these underlying factors.

The official confirmed that as of January 6, no rough sleepers were identified in Killarney.

“A rough sleeper was identified and immediate contact was made and the client placed in emergency accommodation,”

he told a Killarney Municipal District meeting.

However, they said that a coordinated response system is in place to address such situations promptly. This system involves collaboration between various agencies, including An Garda Síochána, the HSE, the Office of Public Works, the National Parks & Wildlife Service, Kerry County Council, and voluntary organisations like St. Vincent de Paul.

In response to a query from Cllr. Martin Grady regarding the provision of homeless accommodation within the Killarney Municipal District, the council official explained that emergency accommodation is currently provided across the county through a network of Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) and privately owned facilities.

The council acknowledged the need for a dedicated facility within the Killarney area but highlighted the limitations imposed by the availability of suitable accommodation options.

The proceeds from the match will be donated in full to his family in a show of

support and solidarity.

“The total amount raised is still to be confirmed, but the night raised a four-figure sum which will be donated in full to the O’Sullivan family. Madam's Hill junction update

Killarney Municipal District has received an update on plans to improve traffic flow and safety at the Madam's Hill junction on the N22.

At a recent council meeting, Cllr Brendan Cronin expressed frustration over the ongoing delays in implementing solutions to the traffic congestion and safety concerns at this location. He inquired about the timeline for the proposed improvements.

In response, a council official stated

that a Feasibility and Options Report for the junction has been submitted to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for review and approval. Once approved and funding is secured, the project will move to the Design and Environmental Evaluation stage.

The council official anticipated that the proposed design options for the improved traffic management scheme would be available for public consultation within the first three months of 2025.

Temporary parking at Deerpark proposed by Cllr Martin Grady

At a recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, councillor Martin Grady called for the temporary use of vacant land near Deerpark Playground and Irish School as a parking area to alleviate the town's chronic parking shortage.

Grady told the meeting that ongoing lack of parking options in Killarney, particularly during peak season, were a major concern. While a multi-storey car park is planned for the future, its construction is expected to take time.

"We saw drawings and plans of a multi-storey car park," Grady said.

"Yet we are facing into another summer without an extra parking space. There's various lands within the town that could provide the people with additional parking while we wait for the multi-storey to come to fruition. This will also help the traffic situation as motorists circle the town seeking a parking space."

The councillor proposed utilising vacant land near the Deerpark Playground and Irish School as a temporary parking solution until the multi-storey car park is completed.

In response, a council official replied that the Killarney Municipal District Office will investigate the feasibility of the proposal.

Dunloe Hotel plans major expansion

The Dunloe Hotel and Gardens has submitted a planning application to Kerry County Council for a significant redevelopment of its property.

The ambitious project will see the demolition of existing hotel wings, including the spa, leisure facilities, and some guest rooms, to make way for a range of new amenities.

At the heart of the development plans is the construction of a new five-story building housing 97 modern guest rooms.

This will be complemented by a state-ofthe-art two-story spa and leisure wing, featuring pools, treatment rooms, and relaxation areas.

A new first-floor restaurant and kitchen will be built on an existing terrace.

Sustainability is a key focus of the development. Plans include the installation of solar panels on the existing reception building to harness renewable energy.

The hotel will also be incorporating energy-efficient technologies throughout the new construction.

The planning application, which includes landscaping and site improvements, is currently under review by Kerry County Council.

Park & Ride Option to ease festive traffic

At this week’s meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Marie Moloney proposed the introduction of a Park & Ride service during the busy Christmas season to alleviate traffic congestion in the town.

The proposal stems from the increasing popularity of festive events like the Christmas parades, the Killarney on Ice skating rink, and the recently introduced Christmas Markets.

While these events attract visitors and boost local businesses, they also contribute to increased traffic and parking challenges within the town.

Cllr Moloney expressed concern that the reduction in parking spaces due to these events might deter some shoppers from visiting Killarney.

In response, a council official acknowledged the growing popularity of these festive events and their positive impact on Killarney.

They also confirmed that the council continually assesses parking availability in the town, both on-street and in off-street car parks. The possibility of implementing a Park & Ride service is under active consideration as one potential solution to address the seasonal parking demands.

Lidl plans expanded store following Park Road refusal

Lidl Ireland has submitted a planning application to Kerry County Council for an extension of its existing store on the Tralee Road.

This move comes after the company's previous proposal to build a new store on Park Road was rejected by the council. The proposed development involves the demolition of the current store and the construction of a larger, single-story building with an increased retail space.

The expansion will also include a range of improvements, such as a new off-licence, bakery, and enhanced customer facilities.

The store will also incorporate sustainable features, including a rooftop solar panel array.

The council's previous rejection of the Park Road development cited concerns over traffic congestion and safety.

The planning application is currently under review by Kerry County Council.

Killarney musician's home destroyed in California fires

A GoFundMe campaign established to support a Killarney native, Ruairí O'Flaherty, and his family has surpassed its initial target of $50,000 USD, reaching nearly $99,460 in just over four days.

O'Flaherty, a well-respected mastering engineer over 30 years, along with his wife Sidney Pogatchnik and their two daughters Mirabel and Ellie, lost their home in the recent wildfires that ravaged parts of Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

The family, who resided in the Altadena area near Pasadena, were forced to evacuate as the fires intensified. Tragically, their home was completely destroyed in the blaze.

In response to this unimaginable loss, a friend, Graham Cruser Marsh, set up the GoFundMe campaign to aid the O'Flaherty family. Describing them as "the kindest and most selfless" family, Marsh aimed to raise funds to assist them in securing new housing, essential living supplies, and rebuilding their lives.

The campaign highlighted O'Flaherty's reputation in the music industry, praising him as "one of the most thoughtful and talented humans."

"Anyone that knows Ruairi and Sidney knows that they would never ask for anything," Marsh wrote on the GoFundMe page. "I'm asking for all the help from the community, friends, producers, artists, and collaborators to come together in this time of need. Please consider a donation for the O'Flaherty family."

With the GoFundMe campaign exceeding its initial target, the O'Flaherty family will receive much-needed assistance during this challenging time.

Johnny ‘The Rock’ remembered in a book and charity donations

The memory of Johnny ‘The Rock’ O'Brien, a local farmer who tragically passed away in a Christmas night house fire two years ago, continues to live on.

To honour his legacy, a tribute book has been compiled by his friend and fellow farmer, Lucy Chisholm Greenfield, with the support of his family.

The book, which is not for general sale, has been shared with family, friends, and neighbours, ensuring that Johnny's memory lives on in the community.

In addition to the book, Johnny's legacy is being honoured through charitable contributions.

Killarney ideal venue for national folk music conference

The organisers of this week’s 'Your Roots Are Showing - Ireland's Folk Conference' have explained why they chose Killarney as the host venue.

The conference, which started on Wednesday and continues until Sunday, brought together musicians, industry professionals, and music enthusiasts from around the globe for five days of immersive experiences.

"We are excited to host this year's conference at The Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney, one of Ireland’s most famous and scenic destinations,” said Charlene Sloan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of 'Your Roots Are Showing'.

“The proximity to Gleneagle INEC Arena was part of our draw to this venue. The Gleneagle also offers world class natural

beauty with activities and attractions on their doorstep, including Killarney National Park's stunning lakes and mountains."

Highlights included live showcases, a Music Trail through Killarney's streets, panel discussions on critical trends in folk and traditional music, and educational workshops.

Holyhead Port reopens after storm damage

Sailings at Holyhead Port resumed this week following a temporary closure caused by damage from Storm Darragh in early December.

While one of the two damaged ferry berths has reopened, the port insists it can operate at full capacity by adjusting its schedule.

James Lawless, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, welcomed the port’s reopening and commended the resilience of the haulage sector during the disruption.

Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, described the reopening as a positive step but cautioned that it remains a “temporary fix” since the second berth remains out of service. Hauliers arriving from Dublin yesterday (Thursday) faced several hours of delays. Hyland emphasised the financial strain on the sector, calling for €30 million in government aid to prevent further losses.

Businesses in North Wales have also felt the impact of the closure. Claudia Howard, owner of the Boathouse Hotel in

Holyhead, reported 147 cancellations, resulting in a loss of £14,700 in bookings, excluding additional revenue from bar and restaurant sales.

To prevent a recurrence, a task force will be established involving the Irish, Welsh, and UK governments, along with ferry and port industry representatives. Efforts to reroute traffic through ports such as Liverpool and Pembroke during the closure involved high-level meetings with transport ministers from Ireland, Wales, and the UK.

Biden warns of rising ‘oligarchy’ threat

In his farewell address, US President Joe Biden warned that an “oligarchy is taking shape in America,” citing a dangerous concentration of power among a small group of ultra-wealthy individuals as a threat to democracy.

Biden expressed concerns over the erosion of checks and balances and the role of a “tech industrial complex” in spreading misinformation.

Biden’s speech marked the end of a 50year political career and reflected on his administration's achievements, including economic recovery, infrastructure investment, and pandemic management. However, his presidency was overshadowed by the return of Donald Trump, who takes office on Monday.

Biden acknowledged failures to heal national divisions and prevent democratic backsliding, despite legislative accomplishments like funding infrastructure and tackling inequality. His presidency, defined by the recovery from multiple crises, remains contested as Republicans prepare to reverse much of his administration’s progress.

Biden urged Americans to uphold democratic values, saying that the fight for equality, liberty, and justice continues.

Meta to lay off 5% of workforce

Meta, Facebook's parent company, plans to dismiss approximately 3,600 employees - about 5% of its workforce - according to an internal memo cited by Bloomberg. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the move as part of a performance management initiative to replace “low performers” with stronger talent.

Meta, which had roughly 72,400 employees in September, employs about 2,000 people in Ireland. It remains unclear whether the layoffs will directly impact Irish staff. Previous rounds of Meta lay-

offs have included cuts in Ireland.

Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, expressed concern for affected employees and their families, stating his department is engaging with Meta to assess the potential impact on Irish operations. He emphasised Ireland’s strong, diversified economy and noted Meta’s longstanding presence in the country since 2008. The layoffs are part of broader shifts at Meta, which has recently embraced conservative-leaning policies, including ending its US fact-checking program and reducing diversity initiatives. Zuckerberg

has aligned more closely with conservative figures, hosting meetings with Donald Trump and appointing a Republican to lead Meta’s public affairs. These changes come ahead of Trump’s return to the White House on January 20, with Meta revising content moderation rules on immigration and LGBTQ issues and adopting a community-driven context feature similar to that on Elon Musk’s platform X. Meta’s decision follows similar workforce reductions by other US tech companies, including Microsoft, which recently announced cuts affecting less than 1% of its employees.

IRB reveal public liability claims plummet 40%

Public liability claims have dropped 40% between 2019 and 2023, according to the Injuries Resolution Board (IRB). This sharp decline follows 2021 reforms that introduced reduced injury awards and stricter anti-fraud measures.

The IRB report, which analysed 30,000 claims, revealed that nearly half of all trip, slip, and fall accidents occurred on roads and footpaths. Falls on the same level were the leading cause of incidents, representing 15,000 claims and €90 million in compensation. Pedestrian injuries from unsafe walking conditions resulted in over 6,000 claims, far surpassing 3,412 claims from motor vehicle collisions.

Uneven footpaths, potholes, and defective manhole covers were the top hazards contributing to injuries. Most claims were linked to roadways, footpaths, shops, restaurants, and cafés. Despite the pandemic's impact on foot traffic, preliminary data from 2024 shows the decline in claims has persisted, indicating a lasting shift.

Awards for public liability claims also decreased by 22%, with average payouts dropping from €26,000 to €20,000 between 2020 and 2023. However, claims involving residential institutions rose by 22%, largely due to fatalities

during the Covid-19 pandemic. Assault claims saw a 10% increase in 2023, primarily at bars and restaurants, with three-quarters of cases involving male claimants.

Older individuals were more likely to sustain severe injuries, while Dublin and Limerick recorded disproportionate claim rates compared to their populations. Childcare-related claims remained low, with only 256 cases despite 177,000 children enrolled in such services.

The Alliance for Insurance Reform criticised insurers for increasing profits while premiums remain high despite falling claims. Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty accused the government of stalling legislation aimed at holding insurers accountable and reducing costs. He argued that reforms benefit the insurance industry rather than consumers, as premiums have not dropped in line with reduced claims and awards.

Insurance Ireland CEO Moyagh Murdock welcomed the report but noted that the data overlaps with Covid-19 lockdowns, which reduced business activity. IRB’s Dr. Lauren Swan emphasised that the continued decline in claims in 2024 suggests the changes are not solely pandemic-related but reflect broader shifts in the liability landscape.

Ceasefire deal agreed between Israel and Hamas

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, aiming to end over 15 months of conflict.

The agreement, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, is set to commence on Sunday and includes a phased approach over six weeks. Initially, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages

Draft Programme for Government confirmed

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris have confirmed the completion of a draft programme for the next government.

The new government will be supported by independent TDs, including seven from the Independent Regional Group and Kerry-based brothers Michael and Danny Healy-Rae.

The draft plan has been presented to the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael parliamentary

parties and is awaiting approval by party members. Fianna Fáil will host a special convention in Dublin this Sunday, while Fine Gael plans to hold a series of meetings in the coming days.

Once approved, the nomination of a taoiseach will take place when the Dáil reconvenes on January 22, leading to the formation of Ireland's 35th government. Micheál Martin will resume his role as Taoiseach, while Simon Harris will serve as Tánaiste and minister for foreign affairs.

900 million plastic bottles and cans returned

Re-turn, the operator of Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme, today announced that over 900 million plastic bottles and cans have been returned since the Scheme launched last year.

As we near the one-year anniversary since the launch of the Deposit Return Schemes transition period, uptake and adoption of the Scheme continue to grow. In December, over 5 million plastic bottle and can returns were recorded on a number of occasions.

By returning all Re-turn logo drinks containers through deposit return points rather than placing them in the recycling bin, consumers are ensuring the separate

collection of a higher quality recyclate. By returning all in-scope drinks containers to deposit return points, Ireland can increase its recyclate quality to 98%, from 80% before the introduction of the Scheme. The Scheme continues to play a significant role in reducing litter around the country, as seen in the recent surveys.

Commenting on the progress of the Scheme, Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn said, “This is an exciting milestone as we celebrate the first year since the Deposit Return Scheme began its transition period. The achievement of nearly one billion plastic bottles and cans returned is testament to the growing support of the Irish people. an plas re con

in exchange for 1,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Additionally, Israel will withdraw troops from strategic positions in Gaza and facilitate increased humanitarian aid to the region. Despite the announcement, Israeli airstrikes have continued, with at least 72 people killed in Gaza since the ceasefire announcement.

Cronin Chooses Citroën for Tarmac title defence

Keith Cronin will defend his NAPA Auto Parts Irish Tarmac Rally Championship title in a Citroën C3 Rally2.

The West Cork driver, navigated by Killarney's Mikie Galvin, will make his debut in the French machine at the opening round of the Tarmac series, the Galway International Rally, on February 1 and 2. Cronin returns to a marque with which he has enjoyed past success, including a British Rally Championship title in a Citroën DS3 R3T in 2012 and a WRC3 win at Rally Finland in 2013. In 2016, he and Galvin secured their first Irish Tarmac Champi-

onship title driving a Citroën DS3 R5.

"We evaluated various options, and the Citroën emerged as the best overall package," said Cronin. "The current Rally2 car achieved remarkable success in 2024, winning over 130 rallies globally and securing five WRC2 victories. C3 drivers dominated championships across Europe, Africa, North and South America. We hope to replicate this success in Ireland."

Tom Gahan Motorsport, the team that supported Cronin in his 2024 title-winning campaign with a Ford Fiesta and his previous victories with a Volkswagen

Polo, will prepare and run the Citroën. Continuing the Gallic theme, Cronin and Galvin will compete on Michelin tires in 2025.

In addition to their Tarmac Championship campaign, Cronin and Galvin have entered the opening round of the Probite Brakes British Rally Championship, the East Riding Stages, which follows Galway. However, they are currently on the reserve list for the Yorkshire event.

"We'll assess our participation in the BRC on a round-by-round basis," Cronin stated.

The 2025 NAPA Auto Parts Irish Tarmac

Rally Championship calendar kicks off with the Galway International Rally on February 1 and 2, followed by the West Cork International Rally in March. The series will conclude in October with the Cork ‘20’ International Rally. Meanwhile, Keith's brother Daniel Cronin will also be competing in a Citroën C3 Rally2 this year, aiming to improve upon their third-place finish in the 2024 Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship. He will be co-driven by Donnchadh Burke and will begin their campaign with a run out in Galway prior to the Midland Rally in Longford in March.

Compensation for overbooked, cancelled and delayed flights in the EU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Air passengers have specific consumer rights under European law. You have a right to get assistance from your air carrier and you may be entitled to compensation in certain situations.

Who does the law apply to?

The law applies to all passengers departing from an EU/EEA airport. It also applies to passengers departing from an airport outside of the EU/EEA but arriving at an EU/EEA airport on an EU/ EEA licensed carrier (unless they have already received compensation or assistance in that non-EU/EEA country). It does not apply if you are travelling free of charge or at a fare that is reduced and is not available directly or indirectly to the public. The law also does not apply if you do not have a confirmed reservation or relevant document (visa etc), if you do not arrive at the boarding gate at a good time or if you pose safety or security concerns. If you are denied boarding, or your flight has been cancelled or delayed, and the law does apply, the airline must provide you with a written notice setting out the rules for compensation and assistance. You must be offered 2 free telephone calls, fax messages, or emails. In addition, a sign must be displayed at the check-in area referring to air passenger rights under the law.

What does ‘denied boarding’ mean?

Denied boarding means that the airline has refused to accommodate you on scheduled flights and charters although you have a valid ticket, correct documentation (passport, visa etc.), you have confirmed your reservation on your flight and you have presented yourself for check-in within the required time limit as specified by the airline.

Denied boarding happens when airlines sell more tickets for a scheduled flight than there are seats on the aircraft. Where a flight is overbooked the airline will first call for volunteers to surrender their confirmed reservations to the airline in exchange for agreed benefits. If there are not enough volunteers, the airline may deny boarding to passengers against their will but must compensate them and offer the appropriate assistance set out in the law. In both situations you will be entitled to a choice of:

• Refund of the cost of your ticket within 7 days if not wishing to travel or

• Re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity or

• Re-routing at a later date at your con-

venience, subject to the availability of seats

What is care and assistance by the airline?

Free meals and refreshments must be offered depending on how long the waiting time is. Hotel accommodation must also be offered free of charge where an overnight stay becomes necessary, as well as transport between the hotel and the airport. You must be offered 2 free telephone calls, fax messages, or emails.

If the airline does not give you the above assistance to you and you are forced to make your own arrangements, you should keep all your receipts. You are entitled to get reimbursed for your expenses.

What is my entitlement if the flight is cancelled?

Where your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a choice of:

• Refund the cost of your ticket within 7 days or

• Re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity or

• Re-routing at a later date at your convenience, subject to the availability of seats

You may also be entitled to compensation.

Are there situations where compensation is not payable?

You are not entitled to compensation if:

• You have received at least 2 weeks’ notice of the cancellation; or

• You have received between 2 weeks and 7 days’ notice but you have been offered an alternative flight departing no more than 2 hours before your original departure time and arriving at your final destination less than 4 hours after your original scheduled time of arrival; or

• You have received less than 7 days’ notice but you have been offered an alternative flight departing no more than 1 hour before your original departure time and arriving at your final destination less than 2 hours after your original scheduled time of arrival. If the airline can prove that the cancellation was caused by an extraordinary circumstance which could not have been avoided, even if all reasonable measures had been taken, no compensation is payable.

Examples of extraordinary circumstances may include:

• Weather conditions

• Air traffic control restrictions

• Security risks and

• Industrial disputes that affect the op-

eration of the flight

What are my rights if my flight is delayed?

Whether a delayed flight comes within the terms of the law depends upon the distance of the route involved and the length of the delay.

The following flights are covered by the law:

• Delays of 2 hours or more in the case of flights of 1500 km or less

• Delays of 3 hours or more in the case of all flights within the EU of more than 1500 km, and all other flights between 1500 and 3500 km

• Delays of 4 hours or more in the case of all other flights

If your delayed flight is covered by the law, free meals and refreshments must be offered depending on how long the waiting time is. Hotel accommodation must also be offered free of charge where an overnight stay becomes necessary, as well as transport between the hotel and the airport. You must be offered 2 free telephone calls, fax messages, or emails.

If the flight is delayed at least 5 hours, you must be offered a refund of your ticket instead of flying. A refund is a full refund of the ticket for the part or parts of the journey you have not made and for the part or parts you already made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose to your original travel plan. When relevant, it also includes a return flight to your first point of departure, at the earliest opportunity.

If the airline can prove that the delay was caused by an extraordinary circumstance which could not have been avoided, even if all reasonable measures had been taken, no compensation is payable.

What are the levels of Compensation paid?

Where a refund of the cost of the ticket is chosen and you are also entitled to compensation, the following compensation must be paid:

Compensation when getting a refund

Flights of 1,500 km or less

Flights of over 1,500 km within the EU and other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km

All other flights

What are the rules re upgrading and downgrading seats?

If you are offered a seat in a higher class than your original booking, the airline cannot charge you an additional payment for this seat.

If you agree to be placed in a lower class than on your original booking, you are entitled to reimbursement of a percentage of the difference in price. In other words, if you booked a business or first class seat and the airline offers you a seat in a lower class it must refund you a percentage of the ticket price you originally paid.

How do I make a complaint?

If you have a complaint about a cancellation, long flight delay or an instance of denied boarding, complain to the airline first.

If your airline does not resolve your complaint, you should send it to the appropriate national enforcement body. Each member state is responsible for departures from airports within its territory and arrivals into such airports from third countries on EU/EEA-licensed carriers.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) is the national enforcement body in Ireland. It deals with complaints arising from flights departing from Irish airports or those arriving at an Irish airport from outside the EU/EEA on an EUEEA-licensed carrier. You can make a complaint online.

If you have a complaint about a flight returning to Ireland from the EU/EEA, you contact the national enforcement body in the EU/EEA state your flight departed from.

For example, if you booked a return flight from Dublin to Malaga and the outbound flight (i.e. the Dublin to Malaga flight) was cancelled then you should contact the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). However, if the return flight (i.e. the Malaga to Dublin flight) was disrupted then you should contact the Spanish equivalent, the Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (AESA).

Find more information on your rights and how to make a complaint on www. iaa.ie. You can also find all the common questions about passenger rights in case of flight cancellation, delay or other areas.

€250

€400

€600

When the choice is re-routing and you are entitled to compensation, the amount of compensation you are entitled to depends on the length of delay past your original planned arrival time.

61ST WEDDING ANNIVERSARY REMEMBRANCE FLEMING

Donie and Julianne Fleming 79 St Brendan’s Terrace, Killarney

26TH ANNIVERSARY BARTLETT

In loving memory of Willie Bartlett late of Barraduff, Headford who died on 16th January 1999.

LAST WEEK’S SUDOKU ANSWERS

Julianne, our anniversary is drawing near. What a lovely time we would have, if only you were here. We would spend so many happy hours the way we did before. Anniversaries are for loved ones and I couldn’t miss you more. When I wake on our anniversary day, I look to Heaven above.

And I will remember every smile and think of you with love. Take all my teardrops and wrap them in love. Ask the wind to carry them to my wife up above.

61 years ago, we got married on the 16th January 1964. Every day I love you and miss you more and more. Memories will give me strength and you will see me through. Though my tears keep falling, I will smile again for you.

My lips can’t speak how I love you, my heart cannot tell me what to say. God only knows how I miss you, on this very special day. Our anniversary is here, my heart is full of pain. Knowing your not here, things will never be the same.

Wishing every day just to speak and hug you so tight.

JUST FOR FUN

For you to tell me, that you are all right. It isn’t what I write, or even what I say. It’s how I feel deep inside, as I think of you today.

Julianne, your resting in Heaven up in the sky.

Time and tears slip gently by, but memories and love will never die.

It doesn’t take our anniversary to bring you to my mind.

For days without a thought of you are very hard to find.

I can always feel you close to me day and night.

Even though you are very far from sight. There is one star that shines so very bright. I know it’s you Julianne, who comes out to say good night.

Your loving husband Donie Fleming. xxxx

Valiant Crokes bow out after epic semi-final SPORT

ALL-IRELAND SENIOR CLUB SEMI-FINAL

Errigal Ciaran 2-18 | Dr. Crokes 1-18 AET NEWBRIDGE

Statistics are clinical and cold, but the hearts were warm at St Conleth’s Park on Saturday last as two teams went out to attack and produced the best game I have seen not just for months but years. It is little consolation for Dr Crokes’ players and management that it was such an absorbing spectacle because there was nothing between two excellent teams. Memories of the great Dublin v Kerry rivalry during the Golden Years came to mind. The best game of that era was the one Ker-

ry lost.

Victory for Errigal Ciaran earns them a place in the All-Ireland Club final against Cuala on Sunday next. I expect them to win it because they are Grade 1. From what I

have seen of Cuala, they are well short of that standard and the only danger for this brilliant Tyrone side is if they have injuries from the Crokes match. Eight days is too short to recover from such injuries. Also, how tired are they after their marathon semi-final? If Dr Crokes had won then two (if not more) of the starting 15 would not have been fit to play this weekend. How serious are the

GAA games planners about player welfare, or are these just pious platitudes, aspirational but not matching the reality for players? I have written about this in past issues and will return to the topic in the future.

Sport plays a vital role in shaping character and personal development. The value of sport encompasses a multitude of benefits that enrich individual lives and society as a whole, from promoting physical and mental health to fostering social interactions and connections. It also drives economic growth and last week’s game was a nice money spinner for Newbridge, Barack Obama’s and Fitzgerald’s Woodlands in Adare.

That’s the theory and the reality of the importance of sport in my view, but it can be cruel and heartbreaking, as it was for the Crokes players, management and loyal supporters who travelled to St Conleth’s Park on Saturday for what developed into a non-stop, thrilling, heart-stopper, and a riveting Late Late Show. Invariably, post-match analyses dip into the ‘if’ world - or more accurately the ‘only if’ world.

DISCIPLINE

This was live drama at its best and the uncertainty of duels in sport mirrors life itself, the highs and the lows. In my opinion, the referee did a fine job overall and I agreed with practically all of his decisions. Discipline was excellent and he only had to give two yellow cards, one to each team. There was never a hint of a black card or a red card which would be trotted out as an excuse. Going right back to Pat Spillane’s description of puke football by Tyrone, this was anything but distasteful. The game was fast, furious and open, devoid of the trademark swarming of Tyrone teams. There was plenty of tough tackling, but it wasn’t dirty. Mind you, Errigal did concede 30 frees to the 13 by Crokes, but most of them were committed so far out from their own goals that a pointed free by Tony Brosnan was not on in most cases.

After a very even first half, Errigal Ciaran led by eight points to seven, and they deserved it. The Canavan brothers Ruairí and Darragh excelled. The pedigree is there, and the DNA was so evident. God himself must have been so happy up on the new stand to see both of his sons kick brilliant scores. The goal stood out and the points were inch perfect, always able to swing inside the posts

when one thought that there was no way they would curl in. They scored 1-13 between them Burns and Brosnan scored 13 of Crokes' points. Burns excelled, kicking four great points from play and one from a free. Brosnan was very tightly marked and could only get away from his markers to score one from play. However, he kept Crokes engine purring with seven frees, and some of these were real pressure kicks from acute angles.

Burns edged Crokes one point ahead in the last minute of added time, but Errigal didn’t bend the knee and scored the equalising point in dramatic fashion.

The Tyrone champs were the better side in extra time, especially when they rifled one into the net with a splendid shot. That was huge in extra time and they went six points clear as Crokes fared worse in the second period.

CRIPPLING INJURIES

Key players such as Brian Looney and the very influential Burns eventually hobbled off with crippling injuries at the end of this epic contest. Earlier, David Shaw had to go off injured but he did reappear again in the closing minutes from the sideline. Crokes battled to the end and Charlie Keating, one of their young guns, fired a powerful low shot through a sea of legs for a heart-lifting goal. But seconds later the referee called for the ball. At the end of extra-time, Crokes manager Pat O’Shea circled the wagons and articulated the home truths he has learned and practised from his experiences at the highest levels as a player and coach. The players were shell-shocked as their coach put it all in razor-sharp perspective and tears welled up in this highly emotive post-match debriefing. No excuses were proffered and there was no single cause for this loss. There were plenty of mistakes made throughout the game, but such

was the intensity of it all that there wasn’t time to dwell on the negatives; he stuck to the positives. None of the usual ‘if only’ excuses. No wind factor, as perfect a day as one could expect in mid-January, especially after the heavy snowfalls on the week leading up to the match. No blame to the referee Brendan Cawley (Kildare).

Dr Crokes are the leading club in Kerry in 2024 with 14 Kerry SFC titles, well over the half dozen Munster titles and two All-Ireland Club titles. Their coach said Crokes were winners because they had lost so many times, often in a tantalising way going back to those last-minute county final losses to the likes of Kenmare District and South Kerry. Bryan Sheahan’s booming last-minute free here in the Fitzgerald Stadium was a good example.

Then came O’Shea’s key message: you win because you have to learn from losses. The lessons are stored away in the brain to be resurrected in times of greatest need when there is just a single point between the sides in the dying moments of a game.

Sport can be two-faced like the mythical god Janus who could look backwards and forwards, giving us the word January. The same mythical God also rep-

resents beginnings and ends, entrances and exits (no names mentioned), change, transition, and opportunities to get back on target.

That was on O’Shea’s mind when he condensed his analysis with a brilliant punchline: “This is where you win; you win it out here (on the pitch), not at training sessions, not in dressing room speeches, but here on the field of play. You gave everything that was asked of you and left it all out here on the pitch. Well done. Crokes will rise again; that’s our history of success.” Who will retire? Who will manage that success? N’fheadar (I wonder).

That was it, a positive encouraging message. Any other comment would be superfluous in an uplifting debriefing. Drive on and minutes later he was in the Errigal Ciaran dressing room. Fair play.

JOHN STEPHEN O’SULLIVAN RIP

The Rathmore man did so much for the Rathmore community by documenting its history and was a genius on the Rathmore All-Ireland-winning GAA Scór Question Time team. Goldsmith said it best: “And still they gazed and still the wonder grew, That one small head could carry all he knew.”

One in four people now more interested in women’s sport

Research suggests significant increase in support for female athletes and games

New findings unveiled by the LGFA and Lidl at the launch of the National Football League indicate that 24% of people in Ireland are more interested in female sport now than they were at the same time last year.

Continuing the momentum of the hard-hitting ‘Get Behind the Fight’ campaign, the research, which was conducted by Red C in November 2024, also revealed the need for more high-profile female players in sport as 42% of the Irish public said they would be more likely to attend a women’s sporting event in person if someone well-known was playing.

However, the challenge of player visibility and audience connection remains, with 43% believing that not knowing anyone who’s playing is a barrier to attend-

ing a female sports event – an increase from 33% of respondents surveyed in Lidl’s 2023 research study – illustrating the growing importance of raising the profile of female athletes to attract fans. The unveiling of this new research comes with the 2025 Lidl National Leagues about to get underway. There are four fixtures in Division 4 on Sunday, January 19 as Kilkenny, Antrim, Leitrim, Fermanagh, Sligo, Wicklow, Longford and Derry commence their campaigns.

Saturday, January 25 marks the start of the Division 1 season and the opening game is one to savour as All-Ireland champions champions Kerry take on Armagh, the 2024 Division 1 winners, at Austin Stack Park. That game, scheduled for 1.30pm, will be broadcast live on TG4. The Kingdom will be hoping for another

successful campaign under their new boss Mark Bourke, who has taken over from outgoing managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill.

The 2025 National League will conclude across the weekend of Saturday/Sunday April 12/13 with the finals across all four divisions. TG4 will provide live coverage of the Division 1 and 2 finals from Croke Park on the Saturday while the Division 3 and 4 deciders will be available to view live on the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel on the Sunday.

Commenting on the results of the survey, LGFA President Mícheál Naughton said: “This is yet another eye-catching and thought-provoking piece of research from Lidl Ireland. The ‘Get Behind the Fight’ campaign was unveiled at the launch of the 2024 National League season and has made a significant impact, urging support for live female sport and highlighting that nearly 60% of Irish

people have never attended a female sports event.

“This latest research piece shines a light on the importance of female sporting role models, and we are extremely fortunate to have so many of them playing prominent roles in their local communities as leading club and intercounty players. This is yet another exciting year for the LGFA as we look forward with anticipation to another Lidl National League season, ahead of the provincial and All-Ireland championship season.

“I wish all of our counties the very best as they embark on their journeys in 2025 and a huge word of thanks to Lidl Ireland, our National League sponsors and official retail partners, for their continued support.”

The full findings of the survey can be found on the official LGFA website, ladiesgaelic.ie.

PAUDIE O’CONNOR CUP SEMI-FINAL Utility Trust St Paul’s 69 | Killester 70

Defeat can be a bitter pill to swallow and losing by the bare minimum only makes it worse. The big crowd in the Cathedral of Cork Basketball, the Neptune Stadium, may have paid for their seats but they spent the majority of this blockbuster sitting on the edge of them.

Not for the first time this season Utility Trust St Paul’s went toe to toe with a heavyweight and gave as good as they got. The result was still in doubt as the clock ticked down to its final seconds but James Fleming's side just came up short. Despite losing they can still look themselves in the mirror and know they gave it everything they had.

Killester are the reigning league champions with a host of Irish internationals and they were the first to admit that it took all that they had to edge past the Killarney side. Their talismanic figure Michelle Clarke said as much afterwards when she acknowledged that they needed every morsel of grit, determination and experience to get them over the line. It really was that close.

St Paul’s were outstanding, especially in the first half when their game plan was perfectly executed. Alex Wittinger and

St Paul’s give league champs a real scare

Gracen Kerr were scoring freely, Mathilde Diop was finding her range, and defensively they worked hard on shutting down the influence of Samantha Haiby. You could argue that they probably deserved more than a six-point lead at halftime and, with a bit of temerity, question a few of the refereeing decisions that saw the foul count at 8-2 at the end of the first quarter. But Killester roared back into the game in the third quarter and St Paul's grip on the game was never as strong thereafter. You'd have to factor in the absence of Rheanne O’Shea and Leah McMahon also - when you take these teams on you need every tool in your armoury.

DILIGENT

Straight from the tip off Kerr skipped in for a basket but Destiny Strother replied with a three. St Paul’s were diligent on defence and that helped them run into a

13-8 lead. Their intensity was starting to get pockmarked by fouls, though, perhaps with some in the debatable category. Lorraine Scanlon and Paris McCarthy found themselves in early trouble but the introduction of Lynn Jones, Síofra O’Shea and Denise Dunlea didn't weaken the cause. Dunlea hit five points, Wittinger was heating up, and at the end of a high quality first quarter it was St Paul’s in front 27-25.

Wittinger struck early in the second followed by a Kerr three as Haiby was trying to pull the Killester strings. Hannah Thornton was starting to be a handful for the Paul’s defence but the offence was really clicking into gear. Diop and Wittinger hit threes and Killester called a timeout trailing 40-33. Paris McCarthy picked up her third foul but Lorraine Scanlon offset that blow with great work inside. With a 44-35 lead the game was about to enter a critical stage. Haiby finished the half with a three and then exchanged free throws with Dunlea to close the gap to six. But crucially Killester emerged from the dressing room a different team and hit 12 points without reply. Strother, Haiby,

St Paul’s were outstanding, especially in the first half when their game plan was perfectly executed.

Clarke and Bagdanaviciene were rampant and it necessitated a St Paul’s timeout to clear the heads. It had the required effect as Wittinger and Kerr steadied the ship and even though Thornton netted again the recovery saw St Paul’s 56-55 ahead going into the final period.

You could cut the tension with a knife as there was never more than the width of a cigarette paper between the two sides. It made for huge excitement as they traded blows with Wittinger, Diop and Scanlon answering the efforts of Haiby, Strother and Thornton. Both sides seemed thankful for the time out with 5.27 to go and Wittinger pounced to put her side one clear again, 64-63. In what looked like a decisive move, Thornton and Haiby put the Metropolitans three clear but in the blink of an eye Kerr reeled them in with a three.

St Paul’s were now on team fouls but a combination of solid defending and errant Killester free throw shooting lessened the effect. Kerr was most unlucky when her three-point shot bounced out but when Diop wriggled in to put her side 69-68 ahead, you wondered was it going to be their night.

However, Haiby was fouled as Killester searched for redemption and she was nerveless from the charity stripe to give her side the lead. St Paul’s tried in vain for a winner, their best moment arriving when McCarthy weaved into the paint with seconds on the clock, only to see her effort blocked.

With that went St Paul’s hopes of a first National Cup final appearance, but the team certainly died with their boots on.

ST PAUL’S: Alex Wittinger 24, Gracen Kerr 20, Mathilde Diop 13, Denise Dunlea 6, Lorraine Scanlon 6, Paris McCarthy, Lynn Jones, Síofra O’Shea, Meabh Barry. KILLESTER: (leading scorers) Samantha Haiby 20, Hannah Thornton 13, Ieva Bagdanaviciene 12, Destiny Strother 11.

Blues to face Ringmahon in FAI Junior Cup showdown

Killarney Athletic will make the relatively short journey to Cork on Sunday for a massive tie against Ringmahon Rangers in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup. The match takes place at 2pm.

The Blues have done very well to make it to this stage of what is a fiercely competitive national competition but Brendan Moloney’s men will be gunning for a spot in the last 16, where they would undoubtedly be joined by the some of

Kerry players excel at Munster Championships

The Munster grade C, F and H Championships took place this past Sunday in the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre. It was a long day of badminton with 179 entries altogether and almost 200 games being played from 9am to 9pm that night.

With big entries in each of the different grades, many Kerry players performed very well in reaching semi-finals and finals.

In the grade C, Edel Kenny (Ballyheigue) teamed up with Niamh O’Connor (Waterford) who is from Dingle and played all her juvenile badminton here in Kerry. Unfortunately they lost out to Aisling Chapman and Caroline Hayes of Cork in the final.

Tom Bourke also made it to the final of the men’s grade C singles beating his fel-

low Kerry man Fergal Hannon in a great semi-final match (as every match played between the two is). Tom unfortunately went on to lose out to Carrigaline’s Adam Barry in a very good final, 18-21 and 2022.

In grade F, Jennifer Estella (Tralee) and Olena Paiuk (Tralee) made it to the final of the ladies’ doubles unfortunately losing out to Naoise Murtagh (Waterford) and Michaela Tuan (Clare) in the final. In the mixed doubles, Josie Gilbert (Ballyheigue) and Alvin Rahman (Killarney) made it to the semi-finals, losing out to Oisín Hannigan and Molly Keneally (both Waterford) in a close three-set game.

Kerry Badminton expressed gratitude to all that were involved in the organising and running of the competition on the day.

the finest amateur football teams in the country.

Athletic are the only Kerry side still standing in the FAI Junior Cup following victories over Ballingarry (4-0) and Clonmullion (2-0) in Rounds 3 and 4.

SENIOR LADIES YOUNG PLAYER OF

THE YEAR: Our Senior Ladies Young Player of the Year award is in a safe pair of hands for 2024 with our senior goalkeeper Amy Walshe being awarded the accolade. Hailing from Bridgefield, the daughter of club stalwart and previous club person of the year Enda Walshe

and the late Breda, Amy has been a familiar face around Direen from a very young age, regularly accompanying her dad to the club in between lining out at every age grade over the years. Numerous underage titles were won over the years with Amy forming the last line of defence. The position of goalkeeper is the most high-pressure position on the field, often the most difficult position to fill but one which Amy has made her own over the years.2024 was a season which saw our regular senior ladies goalkeeper retire which paved the way for Amy to make the step up. Having been involved in the senior set up for the previous couple of years, management confidently handed Amy her opportunity and she grasped it firmly with both hands and never looked back. Amy has worked diligently on the position this year and the improvement in performance is evident for all to see - be it shot stopping, high balls or kickouts Amy has not disappointed. The category of Young Player of the Year was extremely competitive this year, a very encouraging factor for the future, with a number of players putting their hands up for consideration. From stand out defending to marauding half forward play to scoring full forwards the list of contenders was long and warranted close scrutiny. When it came to the crunch of nominating the winner, Amy’s name stood out on top of that impressive list.

SENIOR LADIES’ PLAYER OF THE YEAR: When the senior ladies’ management team of Ted Healy, John McCarthy and Orla Culloty were asked for their senior ladies’ player of the year for 2024, one name was unanimously agreed on from the outset - that of Keri Ann Hanrahan.

Keri Ann put in a stormer of a year for our senior ladies in a record-breaking season with her trademark runs from the half back line a joy to behold. Anyone watching Keri Anns progress over the years will not be surprised with this award – she has been making great strides for club and county from an early age. Playing at all age grades, the Muckross girl won numerous club titles over the years making her senior Legion debut at the age of just 15 and over the course of the past 6 seasons she has become an integral part of our Ladies senior team. Keri Ann has not been found wanting on the county scene, having represented Kerry at all age grades, including senior. She has Munster honours at all underage grades and captained the Kerry Minor team. Keri Ann was a member of the National League winning senior side of 2023 before she returned to concentrate on her club football. 2024 will live long in the memory for our senior ladies' players, and Keri Ann was a driving force behind the success. Always available to train, often putting in extra work after sessions, a great presence in the dressing room and on the field, Keri Ann is a very popular and most deserving winner of our Senior Ladies player of the year for 2024.

SENIOR MENS YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR: The Jim Trant Award goes to the young player who made the biggest impact in the previous twelve months and gave a hint of what future promise might hold. Having played all age groups growing up, Conor Gammell took a break from football to concentrate on athletics. But he didn't stay away too long, and 2024 can be labelled his breakout year. He was a consistent trainer and made his senior team debut in the East Kerry Superleague. Through his work ethic at training and performances on the pitch, he soon became a regular on match days. Given the experience of the defence, it may have been a tall order, but his athleticism and speed marked him out as one for the present as well as the future. It's hoped he will be a mainstay of the senior team for years to come.

SENIOR MENS PLAYER OF THE YEAR: This is this player's second time winning the John O’Grady Cup and when you consider that the first time, he won was in 2010 it tells you all you need to know about the commitment and dedication he possesses. Fourteen years later, he is still a vital cog in the senior team wheel, and his performances in 2024 make him a worthy recipient. Jonathan Lyne has, of course, sandwiched an inter county career in between those dates, but it was a testament to his professionalism and enthusiasm that he stood out as the teams outstanding player. Those characteristics can be held up as an example to the younger players in the club, and if any of them

CAPTAINS: Referee Brendan Cawley with team captains Darragh Canavan of Errigal Ciaran and David Naughten of Dr Crokes before the

can come close to replicating his career, the club will be all the better for it.

KERRY LADIES: Well done to Ali Bowler, Sophie O’Shea, and Leah Mannix, who were all named on Kerry LGFA Panels for the season ahead. Both Ali and Sophie will line out for the Kerry U16 ladies while Leah will be playing with the Kerry U14s. We wish the trio the very best of luck for the season ahead.

ALL-IRELAND CLUB SEMI-FINAL: Dr. Crokes 1:18 Errigal Ciarán 2:18 (AET). Our fantastic season has come to an end after a Titanic battle against the Tyrone Champions in Newbridge. With two evenly matched teams fighting for a spot in the All-Ireland Final it was always going to be a tough battle. We started well, winning the hop and getting the first opportunity to put a score on the board but unfortunately Micheal Burns' effort swung narrowly to the left and wide. With points from Cian McMahon, Tony Brosnan, Micheal Burns and Mark O'Shea we were unlucky to be trailing by the minimum at the break 0:07 to 0:08. After a great ball in from Gavin O'Shea in the 15th minute, Tony Brosnan were unlucky not to find the back of the net. The second half was as nail biting as the first with both teams giving everything they had. It was hard to separate the sides with points being traded for much of the half. A crucial goal for our opponents in the 38th minute meant that we had to work harder to make up the difference. Points from Brian Looney and Tony Brosnan saw us level things for the 6th time in the game. The last 5 minutes had us all on the edge of our seats and when Tony Brosnan put us in the lead with a brilliant point from play in the 58th minute it looked as if the game was ours to take. We fought hard to hold our lead until the dying seconds of the 5 additional minutes when the Errigal Ciaran wing back levelled matters and forced us to extra time. The first period of extra time could not separate the sides, but it only took the first minute of the second for the Tyrone men to add the maximum to the scoreboard, leaving us trailing by 3. Charlie Keatings 80th minute goal came a little too late. This has been an unforgettable campaign for our senior footballers who have brought us on many great days out this season while also adding plenty of silverware along the way. Well done to all of the team and management, we are so proud of how well they represented our club on the national stage.
