"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Killarney Girls Are Just Fizzing With Bright Ideas THE pupils of Holy Cross Mercy National School have been adding plenty of fizz, fun and pizzazz to proceedings at a major business showcase for Kerry’s youngest entrepreneurs yesterday. The students unveiled their business Fun Fizzies Bath Bomb Company at the Junior Entrepreneur Programme showcase at The Malton where they joined a thousand young entrepreneurs from across Kerry. Children in Aisling Sugrue’s fifth class and Rhonda Daly’s fifth and sixth class are the brains behind the successful scheme which they embarked on in October. “Having gathered a lot of knowledge, the girls came up with many enterprising ideas and researched their feasibility. After a lot of thought and consideration the children voted on the idea of starting a bath bomb business,” said Aisling. “Excitement grew as the children conducted as variety of market research amongst their target market. This included conducting

surveys, hosting a focus group and doing a blind scent test between commercial bath salts and bath bombs compared to their own homemade product.” Soon the Fun Fizzies Bath Bomb Company was set up and production began in the classrooms. The children had to finance the company themselves and each child put in an investment of €3 each into the business – which they later received back when the company made profit! The girls produced hundreds of bath bombs and bath salts in lavender and lemongrass scents. These products all sold out in record time following the showcase and launch day which was held in January in the school. The generous girls also decided to donate €588 to the nearby Killarney Daffodil Farm’s fundraiser in aid of cancer research. “Elizabeth O’Shea, a third-class pupil in our school, and her dad, Michael, run the Killarney Daffodil Farm so the charity has a close connection with the school,” said Aisling.

Sharing The Recipe For Success With Michael Flatley WORLD-FAMOUS dancer Michael Flatley was suitably impressed when he encountered some of Kerry’s brightest and best young entrepreneurs in Killarney on Thursday. Michael got to sample some tasty treats prepared by Katie Shields of Blissful Bits from Gneeveguilla National School as she attended the Junior Entrepreneur showcase at The Malton Hotel. The Junior Entrepreneur Programme is an entrepreneurial education programme for primary school pupils. It was founded in Kerry in 2010 by Jerry Kennelly, the Institute of Technology, Tralee, Mary Immaculate College of Education, Limerick and Shannon Development, with the aim of fostering and nurturing an entrepreneurial culture, at an appropriate level, among primary school children.

SHOWCASING BUSINESS SAVVY AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT ON THIS page and also throughout this week’s edition, you will be struck, as we were, by the sheer creativity and brilliance being shown by Killarney and Kerry’s youngest citizens. From the bath bomb business established by our neighbours in Holy Cross Mercy National School to life-enhancing inventions dreamed up by the students of all three second-level schools in town as they participated in the recent SciFest at the Institute of Technology in Tralee, the sky’s the limit when it comes to teens and pre-teens’ innovation. Not only that but our local schools are also fostering a spirit of civic-mindedness and their students are teaming this with their talents. This Sunday, for instance, St Brendan’s College’s transition year students have organised a fund-raising and hopefully life-saving Red Run in aid of Operation Resuscitation Killarney. It would seem that the future’s bright indeed if the business savvy and community spirit shown by Killarney’s youngest residents is anything to go by. EVE KELLIHER, EDITOR

Killarney Community Hospital Update KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae has welcomed the fact that Killarney will be getting a new 130-bed community hospital which will be completed by 2021. At present costings under the capital plan the total investment will between €9-10 million. The facility will have 80% single room occupancy. “I want to thank the matron, nurses and staff of our present Killarney Community Hospital for making the best of the facility that they have and who run an excellent facility and give the kindest and best care available to patients,” said Deputy Healy-Rae. “Any family who has had any dealings with Killarney Community Hospital or St Columbanus Hospital nothing but the highest of praise for the care and attention that they get. It is only right and proper that people acknowledge this and compliment the management and staff for all they do with the facilities that they have at present.”

Rose Of Tralee Festival Sparkles In The Spotlight A SPARKLING future lies ahead for the Rose of Tralee International Festival after the Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, and RTÉ presenter Dáithí Ó Sé unveiled premium Irish giftware brand Tipperary Crystal as the new lead sponsor. The announcement at the Tipperary Crystal Showroom at Arnotts Department Store, Dublin, yesterday came ahead of this year’s extended and bigger than ever Rose of Tralee International Festival from August 17-23. Dáithí Ó Sé presented Elysha Brennan with her new Rose of Tralee sash bearing the Tipperary Crystal brand but the public will have to wait until Tuesday, August 23, to see the new tiara, created by Tipperary Crystal, which will be presented to the 2016 Rose of Tralee in the Festival Dome live on RTÉ One television. The executive chair of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said: “We are proud to run a great international festival. It is unique and it has stood the test of time. The Rose of Tralee is one of the strongest and most iconic brands that we have in Ireland. Sustaining and growing that brand requires passion, commitment, creativity plenty of hard work and a commitment to excellence. We are delighted to team-up with Tipperary Crystal who we believe will be a strong partner for the Festival going forward. When the Roses wear the exquisite jewellery pieces that Tipperary Crystal have designed for over five hours of live TV in August they will herald a new order in jewellery and giftware retail sales in the Irish market.” This year’s extended Rose of Tralee Festival will run for seven days from August 17-23 and tickets to all Dome and Street events are now available from www.RoseofTralee.ie.

Question I’m going to take some time off work to look after my children. What effect will this have on my contributions for the State pension? Answer Under the Homemaker’s Scheme, time you spend out of the workforce caring for children or a person with a disability can be disregarded when calculating your entitlement for a State Pension (Contributory). The scheme came into effect on 6 April 1994 (time spent homemaking before this is not taken into account). You do not get credits for years spent out of the workforce. Instead these years will be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). However, you may get credits for the remainder of the year you leave the workforce, and for part of the year when you rejoin the workforce. A homemaker, for the purposes of the Homemaker’s Scheme is a man or woman who provides full-time care for a child under the age of 12 or an ill or disabled person aged 12 or over. A homemaking year is a year in which you are out of the workforce for the full tax year. Up to a maximum of 20 homemaking years can be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). To qualify for a State Pension (Contributory) you must have a minimum yearly average number of contributions from when you entered social insurance to pension age. The Homemaker’s scheme provides that full contribution years spent caring in the home are disregarded in calculating a person's yearly average number of contributions. Take, for example, a woman who started work in 1985, took 10 years out of work to care for children from 1995 to 2005 and then returned to work for another 20 years before retiring in 2025 and applying for a State Pension. Her yearly average would be calculated over 30 years instead of 40 years when the 10 years spent in the home are disregarded. Healy-Raes rev up their Harleys to support services for muscular dystrophy in Kerry

Healy-Rae Brothers Saddle Up For Charity

THE Healy-Rae brothers have been revving up their Harleys well in advance of Ireland BikeFest, getting on their bikes on Sunday to highlight a raffle that is taking place in aid of supports and services for people with muscular dystrophy in Kerry. The independent Kerry TDs Michael and Danny Healy-Rae donned their leathers and motorcycle helmets to generate support for the Muscular Dystrophy Ireland National Harley-Davidson® Raffle which sees one lucky member of the public ride off with a Harley Davidson® at this year's Ireland BikeFest taking place in Killarney over the June Bank Holiday weekend. It's all part of a thrilling fundraising initiative where people can enter into a draw to win a HarleyDavidson® motorcycle. Monies raised will go to fund essential supports and services to people affected by muscular dystrophy and their families in County Kerry. To enter the raffle, members of the public can simply text "BIKEFEST" to 50300* with each text costing €4, plus there is absolutely no limit to the number of entries a person can make, so even more chances to win! BikeFest is Ireland’s largest free open biker festival and 2016 marks the tenth year of a unique and special relationship with Muscular Dystrophy Ireland as its official charity partner. Muscular dystrophy is a rare, and potentially life-limiting, muscle-wasting condition that is estimated to affect approximately 1,500 people across Ireland. There is no known cure.   Kerry TDs Michael and Danny Healy-Rae stated before the launch: “We are delighted to host the launch of the Muscular Dystrophy Ireland's National Harley-Davidson® Raffle to help raise funds for a great organisation. This occasion provides a very important opportunity for MDI to engage with the people and communities of Kerry and to help fund their services in our county.”

Ronan Hits All The Right Notes As He Gets Set To Launch EP

Ronan Kealy who is launching his EP in the INEC Acoustic Club on Saturday, May 21.

Get On Your Marks For The Red Run BRING a white T-shirt to one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the fun run calendar in Killarney this Sunday – but bear in mind it won’t remain pristine for long! The St Brendan’s College transition-year students have organised an innovative Red Run in aid of their chosen charity Operation Resuscitation Killarney. The 5k event commences at 2.30pm and the registration is in St Brendan’s College today, Friday May 13. The entry fee is €10 for adults, €5 for under-18s and €30 for families. “There will be plenty of fun and games in the college on the day as part of our St Brendan’s Day Fayre,” added teacher Annette O’Neill. It was the quick thinking and life-saving skills of students at St Brendan’s College together with Eugene Cosgrove, Killarney Celtic FC coach, helped save the life of their classmate Tom Geaney last year. The past 12 months have seen St Brendan’s College join forces with the new local project OR Killarney, which offers training to schools, sports clubs and individuals to help save lives. The project is an extension of the Michael Linehan Heartsafe Killarney group and highlights the fact that time is crucial when it comes to saving lives. The transition-year group at St Brendan’s already helped OR Killarney’s volunteer trainers organise a two-hour American Heart Association CPR and AED programme at the school. St Brendan's College students Evan Adetunji, Jake Doona, Mark Cooper, Adam Walsh, Filip Korzec, Krystian Wielgus, Dylan Doona, Paul O'Shea and Darragh O'Leary with teacher Mike Leahy and Mary Devane participating in the Wear Red Day in aid of Operation Resuscitation. They are now organising a Red Run this Sunday at 2.30pm in aid of the cause.

NATHAN’S WALK/ DARKNESS INTO LIGHT

AS DAWN broke over Killarney last Saturday, some 4,500 people were stepping it out in the National Park. They were all keen to support Pieta House as they embarked on the Darkness into Light event in Killarney, held in memory of Nathan O’Carroll. The starting point was Killarney Racecourse and as always, Nathan’s Walk attracted huge support from the local community and beyond. Nathan’s mother, Marie O’Carroll, who organises the event with Nathan’s dad Denis O’Carroll and their family, paid tribute to all who supported it, volunteered and took part. “We would like to say a special thank you to Micheal Lucey and John Buckley of Killarney Racecourse, as well as all the volunteers and the Gardaí, including Detective Garda Chris Manton who is present at the walk every year, Garda Leo Randles, Garda Nigel Shevlin and Garda Adrian,” Marie told Killarney Advertiser. The organisers also paid tribute to Henry Bartlett of Independent Irish Health Foods, which provided water and refreshments along the route. “We would also like to thank broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty and Dan Devane who videoed the event,” added Marie. “There was a great atmosphere.” Darkness into Light is a unique, early morning fundraising event which begins in darkness at 4.15am as thousands of people walk or run a 5km route while dawn is breaking. This year, Darkness into Light took place in over 100 locations in Ireland and abroad including in the US, the UK, Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and Asia. Five walks were organised in Kerry, including Dingle, Listowel and, for the first time, Caherciveen and Tralee.

update WELL, the date has been named for an exciting annual event with all cyclists, sports enthusiasts and local athletes invited to get on their bikes for a very good cause as the fifth annual 80km resource cycle in aid of Barraduff National School takes place on Sunday, May 22. The cycle will follow the same route as last year – from Barraduff school to Kilgarvan through Kenmare town, down Molls Gap into Killarney and finishing at Barraduff NS. “Our regular cyclists tell us that this loop is the perfect preparation and practice spin for the Ring of Kerry Cycle in July,” said Sarah O’Brien of the organising committee, Barraduff NS Parents Council. “You can set your own pace or cycle with colleagues, friends or fellow cycling club members. It’s short enough to be achievable and long enough to be challenging in a great supportive environment.” Participants can park for free and register at Barraduff National School from 7.30am to 10am on the morning of the cycle or from 8pm to 9pm the evening before. The cost remains the same at €20 per saddle occupant and €15 for teenagers aged 16 and over. “Once again, Whytes Centra, Killarney Road, Kenmare, will offer a discounted deal to hungry cyclists as they face the renowned climb up Molls Gap and our very welcome free water and encouragement station, sponsored by O’Donoghue’s Costcutters Shop, Barraduff Village,” added Sarah. O’Sullivan's Cycles, High Street, Killarney, will be on hand to promptly deal with any punctures or repairs needed, while the Order of Malta will be on duty for the duration of the event. “Then it’s back to the comfort of John Dan’s Bar in Barraduff for a sup and a sandwich, with a great tasty free spread on offer, supplied by local parents and volunteer bakers,” said Sarah. “Barraduff NS Parents Council is hoping for a great turn-out again this year to raise funds for that will be used to purchase IT equipment and teaching aids, which will be of enormous benefit to all of the students.”

Calling All Tree Huggers To Branch Out In Killarney IT’S time to stretch your arms out wide and take a bough in preparation for a creative celebration of trees next week. Killarney will host a four-day event which will include an attempt to create a world record-breaking tree hug, taking in the restored Killarney House & Gardens on Friday, May 20. The Celebration of Trees runs from Thursday, May 19, to Sunday, May 22. The tree hug will involve students from local schools in the Killarney area as well as local businesses and visitors. A YEAR of hard work was rewarded this week as the transition-year students at St Brendan’s College received their certificates as Young Social Innovators Advocates. The students took on the theme of health and wellness and concentrated on the topic of CPR. They made themselves available to the voluntary group Operation Resuscitation Killarney. They organised two hugely successful training days in the school during which all transition-year students and the teachers and SNAs in school were trained in CPR. They also helped out with the OR training days at the racecourse. Not only that but the students held a special event "Innovate Thursday"

where they asked students what topics they should focus on for the year. In addition, they held a “wear red” day in December to raise money for Operation Resuscitation. This weekend they will embark on a 5km Red Run at 2.30pm in aid of OR Killarney. “They held a 'wear red day' in December to raise money for OR and they are running this Red Run for the same reason,” said their teacher Annette O’Neill. “They made two presentations about their work during the year and did their final presentation to the YSI judges in City West on Tuesday. They have worked very hard all year and we are very proud of them!”

Sweet Sound Of Success At St Brendan’s

THEY have thought of everything from revolutionary headphones and eco-friendly sugar burners to gaming devices that whisk you back in time so it's not surprising the young science whizzes at St Brendan’s College, Killarney, have been impressing at regional as well as local level. Last Thursday some 19 students from the school participated in the 2016 Kerry regional finals of SciFest at the Institute of Technology Tralee. “The students exhibited exemplary projects displaying in-depth research and investigation as well as innovative entrepreneurial talent,” said St Brendan’s teacher Marian O’Gorman. The school submitted a total of 12 projects, selected following the results of St Brendan’s in-house SciFest competition last March. The projects were based on a broad range of topics including brain injury, invasive species in Killarney National Park and Internet safety. A number of projects involved the invention of a device including drift turbines, a revolutionary set of headphones, an eco-friendly sugar burner and a tracking device. The school won two awards at the event. Eoin O’Connell was awarded the Sustainable Energy award for his eco-friendly sugar burner. This burner offers a way forward as an alternative energy source which doesn’t burn fossil fuels. As a result, this is an energy source which does not pose any damage to the environment. Eoin may be selected to compete in the SciFest finals next November. Seán Farndon, Seán Myers and Aaron Duggan were awarded an honorary award for their invention of their revolutionary headphones. They carried out a study on a wide range of available brands of headphones and identified the strength of each brand. “By combining the best characteristics from each brand, the team designed their own headphones which are of excellent quality and can be retailed at the reasonable price of €20 per set,” said Marian.

St Brigid’s Students’ Invention Will Help Improve Lives TAKING a bow during the week were students from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School in Killarney whose invention to help blind and vision-impaired people in their daily lives received countywide plaudits. Under the guidance of their teacher Miriam Malone, Shannon Hanafin, Eisha Ghani and Fionnghuala Miller created the Blind Navigation and Obstacle Detector Stick and their efforts saw them rewarded with the coveted biomedical award at the SciFest in the Institute of Technology Tralee on Thursday last. “There are about 39 billion blind people and 246 million visually impaired people around the world so we made a Blind Navigation and Obstacle Detector Stick to solve the problems faced by the blind people in their daily life. The system also takes measures to ensure their safety through the GPS,” stated the girls. They will now go forward to the national final which will take place in Dublin in September.

“We wish Shannon, Fionnghuala and Eisha as well as their teacher Ms Miriam Malone the very best of luck,” said St Brigid’s deputy principal Mairead Lucey.

It’s A Chemical Reaction For Top-Class Killarney Students WELL done to the transition year students from Killarney Community College who scooped the prestigious BioPharmaChem Ireland Chemistry Award for best overall chemistry project. More than 150 students from schools all over Kerry exhibited over 60 projects at SciFest at the Institute of Technology Tralee last Thursday. SciFest gives students an opportunity to develop their interest in STEM and inquiry-based approaches to learning, while developing their creative and problem-solving skills and learning to work in a team. year in Killarney Community College were chosen in January at to represent their school in Tralee. They were the winners of the SciFest@ School competition organised by their teacher Geraldine Horan. One of these projects called “Abolish Nail Polish!”, went on to receive the BioPharmaChem Ireland Chemistry Award for best overall chemistry project. Well done to Lauren O'Sullivan, Amy O'Sullivan and Robyn Sheehan. Congratulations is also due to the Carmel Looney, Victoria Funes and Nikola Papikovel for their project "Thinking Musically".

RIDE and groom Emma Grimes and Ray Carey had more reason than most to smile in reminiscence as the current Communion season unfolded. For the couple, who were married in Killarney recently, initially walked up the aisle together when they were in the same class in primary school making their first Holy Communion. Emma and Ray, both from Lavally, Mallow, Co Cork, were wed recently in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa by Fr Michael Leader and held their reception in The Brehon Hotel where wedding co-ordinator Kelly Ann O’Connor helped them plan their big day to perfection. They posed for the camera of Killarney wedding photographer Nerijus Karmilcovas of K Photography at scenic spots including Killarney Golf Club. Helping them celebrate were both sets of parents, Margaret and Paul Grimes and Eileen and Noel Carey. Also lending their support were bridesmaids Sinead O’Callaghan, Clare Grimes and Gail Fitzgerald, groomsmen Gavin Carey, Aiden Carey and Kevin Roche, and flower girl Brona Fitzgerald. Emma and Ray first met as children. “We are neighbours so we have known each other forever, really,” said Emma. “We started going out in 2002.” They got engaged in Lough Erne, Fermanagh, in 2015, on Emma’s birthday which is also Valentine’s Day. At the wedding, band J90 got everybody on their feet and the dance floor remained full into the early hours. Pat O’Neill of The Style Suite at The Brehon took care of the bridal hairstyling while Aine Doherty ensured the makeup was picture-perfect and Lucas Machowski was the videographer. The newlyweds, who will reside in Mallow, chose the Maldives for their honeymoon destination.

Grace Notes How do you define success?

Singer and music teacher Grace Foley ponders an often-asked question

SOMETIMES we ask ourselves, “what does it take to be a success?”, what qualifies us to be deemed “a success story'?”, “what do I need to do or sacrifice in order to achieve this wonderful title?”. I think we should first ask ourselves, “what is success?”. After years of striving to succeed, or perhaps to 'not fail', I have come to the conclusion that success is determined by the person themselves. So many times my family and friends have told me how talented I am and how capable I am, but, even though those kind words were well meant, until I started to believe in myself, they meant very little. To some people success means reaching a higher accolade than everyone else. To me, success is reaching beyond your own perceived limitations and believing that it is worth the risk. Some people are born with a huge talent for something; some are fantastic artists, some are great sports people, some are musically gifted, but without belief in yourself, success will inevitably always feel out of reach.

THE South Kerry Skillnet hosted a special event focusing on jobs in hospitality during the week. The Foot in the Door seminar featured speakers from The Gleneagle Hotel Group, South Kerry Local Employment Services, Kerry Education and Training Board, the O’Donoghue Ring Group and South Kerry Development.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness amongst job-seekers about job opportunities and developing careers within the hospitality sector. “The event provided an overview and insider’s view of the sector, an insight into particular careers/jobs and an opportunity to make important contacts within the industry,” said spokesman

Sean de Buitlear. “The event also provided trainees with information on future network courses and a better appreciation of their suitability for the courses.” There were a number of jobs on offer and speakers talked about their own career path and how they developed within the industry. 13.05.16Killarney Advertiser

health&lifestyle Enjoy the benefits of a non-surgical facelift Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains how you can unveil a picture-perfect complexion in time for summer

WHO wants to grow old gracefully? I ask myself that question quite regularly. Do I want to be the someone who lets it all go in the direction nature intends it? Or do I want to be someone that pushes back on nature’s steady advances? Have you ever tried the CACI non-surgical facelift? For a very long time CACI facials have been seen as a really great alternative to Botox or going under the knife. While you won’t come out looking 10 years younger after one treatment, after a course of treatments, you will see a significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and appaer visibly younger looking. So how does it work? CACI stands for Computer Aided Cosmetology

Instrument and it is a treatment designed over 20 years ago to help treat people with Bells Palsy or who had suffered a stroke. When they were using it in hospitals to treat these patients, it soon became apparent that it could lift and tightens sagging muscles and improves the skins condition. It was re-educating the muscles to do what it had done previously. It was soon brought into the beauty world to do the very same thing for ageing and sagging skin. It also includes microdermabrasion which helps reduce layers of dead skin cells, given way to a younger, brighter complexion. For more information or to avail of a free demo call 064-6632966.

Forever in denim

DENIM is set to become even bigger this season. I end up buying one or two blue beauties for my wardrobe every summer and they always turn out to be true investment pieces. Nearly every store carries the classic trend in a variety of styles. I took on some ’70s style for the look far right with a denim shirt and jeans by popular cult brand Freddys. The look on the left features a denim dress; a must-have for every woman’s wardrobe this season and beyond. My last look, right, is a bit of a throwback to the ’90s, featuring denim capri jeans which are, thankfully, back in vogue. View more on www. lauramacsweeny.com

Memorial plaque unveiled in Vatican City

SEVENTY-TWO years after the Liberation of Rome, a commemorative plaque was unveiled this week to the memory of Killarney’s Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty in the German College, Vatican City. In the presence of several Ambassadors, senior clerics and family and friends, representatives of the O'Flahertys, Derrys and Chevalier/Sands, Judge Hugh O'Flaherty and College Rector Dr Fischer unveiled a commemorative plaque to Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty. This followed a solemn concelebrated high mass with some 20 priests including six Kerry priests. The college church, where Monsignor Hugh would have frequently celebrated mass during his 22 years in residence, had standing room only, with a congregation numbering several hundreds. Monsignor John Kennedy of the Holy Office delivered the homily while Dr Fischer and Irish Ambassador Emma Madigan spoke with great passion about the Monsignor's humanitarian legacy. Laurel Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Irish and British Embassies. Following the unveiling, Judge O'Flaherty spoke of his uncle's time in Rome and how humbled he would be by this tremendous honour. The Monsignor was also mentioned by Pope Francis during his later Angelus Ceremony in St Peter's Square when he welcomed members of the Memorial Society. “The 2016 O'Flaherty Tour began with a quiet unique meeting held at the Irish Augustinian Church of St Patrick's. This meeting was addressed by William Derry, Judge Hugh O'Flaherty, David Sands (Chevalier) and Princess Gesine Pamphilj, with all of them recalling stories from their famous ancestors of the Rome Escape Line,” said Jerry O’Grady, chairman, Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society. During the three days prior to the unveiling, the O'Flaherty Group toured various sites of relevance to the O'Flaherty story as well as the magnificent Benedictine Abbey at Montecassino, the site of the fiercest battle on Italian soil during WW2, where many thousands of young soldiers died, including many of Irish origin. The touring party numbered 60 and was made up of people from Ireland, the UK and Italy and was the third such tour, organised by Cultural Connections - the previous ones being in 2012 and 2014. The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society attended the plaque unveiling in the Vatican City.

John Mcshain And Ballymoss AS KILLARNEY’S May racing festival begins on Sunday, we take the opportunity to enjoy a canter down memory lane to recall John McShain and his famous racehorse Ballymoss. Ballymoss was sold by his breeder at the Doncaster yearling sales. He was bought for 4,500 guineas by Vincent O'Brien, known primarily as a leading trainer of steeplechasers, on behalf of American businessman John McShain, who operated Barclay Stable in New Jersey USA. He also had a racing operation in Ireland where he maintained a home in Killarney called Killarney House. Ballymoss was ridden to most of his important victories by the Australian jockey Scobie Breasley. Ballymoss became a famous Irish thoroughbred racehorse. In a racing career that lasted from 1956 until November 1958, he ran seventeen times and won eight races. In 1957, he became the first horse trained in Ireland to win the St Leger. The following season, he was Europe's leading middle-distance horse, winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

'Legal aid is granted to the majority of those facing criminal charges on indictment’ I WAS stunned to see the line taken/facilitated by the Killarney Advertiser on the fact that Paul Murphy TD is availing of free legal aid to oppose his prosecution in the circuit criminal court for the alleged offence of false imprisonment relating to events in Jobstown, Co Dublin, in November 2014. References such as Mr Murphy's "fat salary" that "we are covering", along with the implication that the deputy is disingenuous in his representation ("...those he professes to represent.."), are, at best, uninformed and, at worst, insidious and biased. The Criminal Aid (Legal Aid) Act 1962 provides for the State to assume the cost of defending criminal prosecutions where the defendant is of "insufficient means" to provide for their own defence. Given that the case in question is likely, according to Deputy Murphy, to cost approximately €100,000, which is in excess of a full year’s salary for him, this would seem to be a case where Free Legal Aid is warranted. Indeed legal aid is granted to the majority of those facing criminal charges on indictment and has, in the past, been provided to both Seanie Fitzpatrick and convicted murderer Graham Dwyer, both of whom, arguably, are individuals of substantial means. The absence of such contextual material in the article was surprising. The statement that "It is difficult to qualify for Free Legal Aid" is incorrect and, I presume, an unintentional conflation between criminal and civil legal aid, the latter having much stricter qualifying criteria. There was also a striking difference between that piece and the article on Deputy Healy-Rae's comments on climate change directly below it. The Kerry TD's comments, which are in opposition both to contemporary science and much of post enlightenment thinking, were reported without comment or criticism. I am sure that it was not the intention of the Killarney Advertiser to present the matter in this light and, of course, I am well aware that individual contributors have their own opinions. It is important, though, to recognise the role played by the Killarney Advertiser in informing opinion and views in Kerry and I would hate to see the publication being used to disseminate slanted or false narratives. David Long, Killarney

Editor’s response KILLARNEY ADVERTISER presents an open forum to facilitate debate as well as reporting news stories and offering opinion pieces. As such we are delighted to receive letters and give our readers the chance to air their views also. As their title suggests, our Home and Away pages report on events both at “home” and “away”, so we are perfectly justified in featuring items of national as well as local interest. Our columnist voiced the opinion that Mr Murphy's actions are contradicting what he stands for and every taxpayer is going to have to contribute to his legal aid on top of the State’s case. This surely should ignite opinion and it has, as you have seen fit to write into us. Our job is done, we have provoked thought and debate. The climate change item was reported in factual fashion, in our “Hitting the Headlines at Home” section, as the breaking news that it was. Mr Healy-Rae’s opinion on climate change hopefully will not cost the taxpayer. Editor’s Note: If you have an opinion you would like to air, you can write to Letters to the Editor, Killarney Advertiser, Unit 1C Park Place, High Street, Killarney, or email newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie All letters must be accompanied by a name, address and phone number for verification purposes. The Provocateur

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

GETTING OUR HEADS AROUND MIGRAINES MOST migraine sufferers will be all-toofamiliar with well-meaning acquaintances’ kind, but misguided, queries as to whether our “headache” has eased. They will invariably follow an attack that has the migraine sufferer confined to bed, writhing in pain in a darkened room while life goes on merrily – and noisily – around them. Granted, there are a million worse things than a migraine and maybe this particular Provocateur is speaking with the accent of a curmudgeon. But usually it is only a fellow sufferer that will understand just what an attack involves. Which is why migraineurs will always pounce upon each other with something approaching glee when we meet socially – and inevitably bore everyone else in our company as we eagerly compare notes on remedies and medication! The symptoms of a migraine are commonly described as throbbing head pain, sometimes localised to one side, which can be accompanied by sensitivity to light, sounds or smells, nausea or vomiting and blurred vision. The reality (obviously varying from person to person) is much harder to convey in words. In the case of this particular migraine sufferer, imagine a small but furiously angry and determined animal with many, many sharp claws relentlessly trying to scrape its way out of your head. The vicious creature is particularly keen to make its forcible, explosive exit by means of the eyeball and seems to regard the inside of the eye socket as a battering ram. This is accompanied by unbearable, throbbing pain like an ice-pick skewering you through one eyeball (in my case, almost invariably my left) right through to the back of the head, with a metronomic sense of rhythm to rival Fred Astaire. The worst migraines are those that creep up on you overnight, when you wake feeling that your previously comfortable pillow has morphed into a jagged rock. Pain and overwhelming nausea accompany every motion of your head and every step you take, meaning forays to respond to nausea’s clarion call are nightmarish in the extreme. The only solace is once the attack has subsided, many migraineurs tend to forget just how intense it was – until, of course, the next time the dreaded migraine strikes!

DU THÉ ET DU PAIN GRILLÉ – TEA AND TOAST!! The Brexit campaign in the UK sometimes sounds bizarre. Now our nearest neighbours are being told their beloved tea and toast could be threatened by the EU Commissioners. The EU is poised to ban high-powered appliances such as kettles, toasters and hair-dryers within months of Britain’s referendum vote, despite senior officials admitting the plan has brought them “ridicule”. Britain is likely to be hit hardest under any crackdown: the UK accounts for a third of all EU kettle sales, despite having just 11 per cent of the population. That is due to a national love of tea that sees consumption outstrip the continental average by a factor of six. The European Commission plans to unveil long-delayed ‘ecodesign’ restrictions on small household appliances in the autumn. They are expected to ban the most energy-inefficient devices from sale in order to cut carbon emissions. The plans have been ready for many months, but were shelved for fear of undermining the referendum campaign if they were perceived as an assault on the British staples of tea and toast. A sales ban on high-powered vacuum cleaners and inefficient electric ovens in 2014 sparked a public outcry in Britain. EU officials have been instructed to immediately warn their senior managers of any issues in their portfolios that relate to the UK and could boost the Leave campaign were they to become public. The decision to push ahead with the plans soon after the British vote was revealed by Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, at the weekly College of Commissioners meeting on April 20. Internet routers, hand-dryers, mobile phones and patio jet-washers are also being examined by commission experts as candidates for new ecodesign rules. However, several products may be granted a stay of execution, as officials admitted the plans are a lightning rod for public anger at perceived meddling by Brussels. At the meeting, Jyrki Katainen, the Commission’s Vice President for Growth, said they should push ahead with the plans for standardised energy usage limits as they could contribute significantly to emissions targets. But he “admitted that ecodesign standards were sometimes ridiculed in the media in terms of the political and geostrategic issues the union was faced with", according to official minutes of the meeting. David Coburn, a UKIP MEP, earlier this year blamed the EU after finding it took his toaster four attempts to brown the bread sufficiently to spread marmalade, and the minutes show how politically fraught the issue has become. Commissioners admitted they need to take a “diplomatic” approach when choosing which items to regulate due to the "sensitivity surrounding certain products". They must “take into consideration the criticisms levelled at the EU, which was seen as intruding too much into citizens' daily lives." But the public might be convinced if it is pointed out that more efficient products will save them money on their electricity bills, they added. The decision on what products to regulate will be overseen by Mr Juncker during a full meeting of the college, after he decided the issue could not be left to mid-ranking bureaucrats. The commission will also get green campaigners and other interested groups to "speak out in favour" of the move, the minutes say, as part of a major public relations exercise. ' Elzbieta Bienkowska, the Single Market Commissioner, confirmed in 2014 that kettles had been identified by the scheme's early studies as having “considerable energy saving potential.” But industry bodies have lobbied against the shakeup, claiming the EU has overstated the potential savings. Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the Vote Leave campaign said: "The EU now interferes with so many aspects of our lives, from our breakfast to our borders. If we vote remain we will be powerless to prevent an avalanche of EU regulation that Brussels is delaying until after the referendum."

Worst towns and cities for air pollution named TOWNS and cities across Ireland have been named and shamed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for breaching safety levels for air pollution. One way the global health body assesses air quality is by examining the levels of a type of pollution known as particulate matter (PMs). WHO's latest data shows that Longford breached the safe limit set for PM10, at 22 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3). Bray was found to have PM10 levels of 20µg/m3. Longford, Bray, Galway and Dublin breached the safe levels for another measure known as PM2.5, with Longford the worst offender at 15µg/m3. In the North, Derry and Belfast were also found to have safe levels for PM2.5, WHO said that across the world 80% of cities that measure outdoor air pollution are failing to meet its guidance for safe levels of air quality. As air quality declines, the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, increases for the people who live in these areas, the health body said. It said that ambient air pollution, made of high concentrations of small and fine particulate matter, is the greatest environmental risk to health - causing more than three million premature deaths around the world every year.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD RURAL BROADBAND There may still be a vital need for those Independents who represent rural areas and who are not committed to supporting the government. While many things may have been agreed there will be problems with interpretation when plain talk will be needed. In the talks about forming a government here several Independents demanded that broadband be extended to rural areas and to more families living in harder to reach rural areas. That’s fine but sometimes promises and panaceas bloom like false teeth in party manifestoes. This was also promised in the UK but it’s not working out as first envisaged. The pledge to provide high speed broadband to every home in the UK has been abandoned by the government in an attempt to save money. High speed internet will not be automatically delivered to countryside homes after ministers claimed some people living in rural areas do not "want to be connected". Instead fast broadband will only be provided in rural areas on request because, according to a Whitehall document, “it is unlikely that everyone will want to be connected”. Campaigners and MPs accused the Government of giving up on providing people in the countryside with a fast internet connection. Superfast speeds are on course to reach 95 per cent of the UK by the end of next year through a roll-out programme run by BT and the Government A year ago, then-Culture Secretary Sajid Javid acknowledged that reaching the "final five per cent" in rural areas would be "challenging”. But he said: "The benefits of superfast broadband are clear from increasing productivity and economic growth to transforming family entertainment at home. We hope to find ways in which those benefits can be brought to even more people." Last November David Cameron, the Prime Minister, announced a new law to make a broadband connection a “universal service obligation” to give people the legal right to a 10megabits (MB) per second connection no matter where they live. However, according to a consultation on the new law, ministers have given up on delivering superfast broadband automatically to the "final five per cent". It said: “It is unlikely that everyone will want to be connected, even if that option is made available to them, and so we do not believe that an additional broadband roll-out programme at this time is proportionate or would represent value for money.” It also emerged that people living in the countryside will have to pay for any additional cost of connecting them to a good broadband speed. Ed Vaizey, the Culture minister, admitted “there might be an element where individuals would have to contribute in order to get it” a basic 10MB speed. He told MPs: “It is important that there would be a potential cap on the amount of public funding or industry funding contribution. If a particular connection was going to cost many, many thousands of pounds, as is the case with a landline, you might have to have a cap on the per-premises funding that would come under the USO.” The plans were attacked by MPs and campaigners, who said it would "leave behind” people who live in the countryside. Grant Shapps MP, the former Conservative party chairman, said: “We need a universal service obligation which provides the same minimum broadband speed whether you are in town or country. “Bureaucratic pen-pushers seem content to think it is OK to leave people in the countryside in the internet slow lane. It's a known fact that once people have high speed broadband their usage expands as they discover new ways to work from home, download smart TV and generally benefit from enhanced communication. We need to take the simple view that broadband is the fourth utility and accept that everyone has a right to their super-fast connection.” Countryside Alliance head of policy Sarah Lee added: “This is very disappointing. The whole point of a universal service obligation is that it applies to everyone, and this one was suggested specifically to ensure that the most rural, hard-to-reach properties will enjoy workable broadband speeds. High speed broadband is an essential service for modern life and we believe a lack of broadband capacity in rural areas is holding back the countryside, socially and economically.”

Filming for next instalment of Star Wars begins FILMING for the next instalment of the Star Wars franchise is set to start today (Friday) in the North-West and crews have been busy over the past few weeks building sets including the iconic spaceship. The film series previously shot the closing scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Skellig Michael off the coast of Kerry. Speaking about the upcoming filming, Jim Mullin of Malin Head Community Association told RTÉ it’s been “incredible”. “In the last few weeks, it’s incredible, the amount of traffic on the road coming here, up to the most northerly point in Ireland, just to see where it’s being made,” he said. “We can only imagine what it will be like once they start filming here.” According to reports, nearly 300 members of the cast, crew and film support staff are expected to hit Malin Head this weekend.

Debris 'almost certainly' from missing plane TWO pieces of aircraft debris found on beaches in Mauritius and South Africa almost certainly came from Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, say Malaysian and Australian officials. It is the latest development in efforts to solve the mystery of the aircraft, which went missing in March 2014. The plane, flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, had 239 people on board when it vanished. It is presumed to have crashed into the sea after veering off course. Three ships are searching a 120,000sq km area of the southern Indian Ocean but have so far found no trace of the plane. Five pieces of debris have been confirmed as definitely or probably from the plane. Each was found thousands of miles from the search zone, though within the area models of ocean currents have indicated debris could wash up.

Muckross Community Association holding “night at the dogs” MEMBERS of Muckross Community Association will be “going to the dogs” next weekend. Its night at the dogs fundraiser takes place at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee, on Saturday, May 28, in aid of Muckross Community Centre. The added extra with the €10 admission fee is entry into a Buster Race with a top prize of €250. The fundraiser is being organised to defray the debt on a 1,000sq ft extension to the community centre. Since its completion last year, the €145,000 extension is continuously being used by Muckross RC, Muckross Community Youth Club and Muckross Community Playschool as well as other groups. A generous grant of €109,000 was allocated for the centre under the Leader programme with the assistance of South Kerry Development Partnership. Muckross Community Association took out a loan to pay for the balance and needs to eliminate that €37,000 debt. Sponsors are needed for the races. Also, people are needed to nominate dogs. If you feel you can help out in any way, just contact community association chairman Liam Kelly, Loreto Road, or any of the other committee members. Everyone will be entered for the Buster Race as part of their €10 entry fee. There are six dogs in every race. A total of 720 combinations can be derived from those six numbers. These combinations will be printed on the tickets. The lucky person who comes up with the winning formula will be heading home with €250.

McLaren Needs A 20-Year-Old Compaq Laptop To Maintain Its F1 Supercar MCLAREN'S F1 supercar is special in more ways than one. Even now it's still the world's fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine, and McLaren only built 106 F1s in total. McLaren recently revealed another special aspect to the F1: a 20-year-old laptop. McLaren is still servicing the existing 100 F1s with a Compaq laptop from the early '90s. "The reason we need those specific Compaq laptops is that they run a bespoke CA card which is installed into them," explains a McLaren spokesperson. "The CA card is an interface between the laptop software (which is DOS-based) and the car." If you've never heard of a CA card, it's a Conditional Access card. Modern PCs use smart cards or USB keys with special access codes to access sensitive systems, and the CA card was used as custom hardware as part of an integrated system for security and copy protection. McLaren has been sourcing Compaq LTE 5280 laptops to keep servicing the F1s, but the company is "working on a new interface which will be compatible with modern laptops" so it won't have to keep hunting for these ancient machines. For now, a 20-year-old Compaq is the key to servicing one of the world's fastest production cars. If you're interested in buying the F1 that McLaren is selling, you won't be able to plug in any old laptop and disable any of those annoying dash warnings. That's probably the least of your worries when the supercar will likely sell for more than €10 million.

Clarkson's new motoring show will be called 'The Grand Tour' CLARKSON, May and Hammond's new series has a name. At last, the new motoring show from Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond has a name: The Grand Tour. The former Top Gear trio signed for Amazon last July with the promise of more automobile adventures. We've known for some time that it would debut on Prime Video this autumn, with at least three seasons premiering over as many years. But there's never been a name -- something Clarkson and the gang have frequently poked fun at -- until now. Notably, The Grand Tour can be condensed to TGT or GT, an acronym similar to Top Gear's own TG.

Amazon also revealed that the show will be travelling around the world -- hence the new name -- and will have a studio audience on location, similar to the old Top Gear hangar. Only this time, the public will be hanging out in a giant tent, rather than a not-too-portable building. The BBC, meanwhile, is hard at work developing a new-look Top Gear with Chris Evans at the helm. The new season premieres later this month with a fresh set of co-hosts including Friends star Matt LeBlanc who both visited Kerry recently filming for an upcoming episode of Top Gear.

The Petrolhead Tour of Ireland at The Brehon Hotel this week. PICTURE: NERIJUS KARMILCOVAS, K PHOTOGRAPHY

CALL OUT 087 6662837 AFTER HOURS

KILLARNEY has always been a bit of a hot-spot for motoring enthusiasts on tour and never more so than lately, what with the arrival last month of the Top Gear crew, let by Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc. This week saw a cavalcade of 22 supercars hit town, including Porsches, Aston Martins, Ferraris, McLarens and Jaguars which rolled into Killarney in recent days as part of a Petrolhead Tour of Ireland. Onlookers stopped in their tracks to watch as the cars drove past before reaching The Brehon Hotel, where the drivers were based. Petrolhead Tours take people on guided driving holidays throughout Europe and North America. This tour is travelling the Wild Atlantic Way taking in the Ring of Kerry, Dingle, the Cliffs of Moher, Galway, Sligo, Donegal and Antrim’s Giant’s Causeway.

POWERFUL NOVENA This novena never fails. Say it on the hour for 9 hours. Jesus who has said, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be open to you. Through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother, I knock, I ask that my prayer will be granted (Make your request). Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. I feel confident my prayer shall be answered. (Make request). This novena is to be said at the same time every hour for nine consecutive hours one day. Promised publication, never fails. N.L.

prayer to ST. joseph O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

novena prayer to st. jude St. Jude, glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus! the name of the traitor has caused thee to be forgotten by many, but the Church honours and invokes thee universally as the patron of hopeless cases - of matters despaired of. Pray for me who is so miserable; make use, I implore thee, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and succour of heven in all my neessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless your request God with thee and all the elect through eternity. I promise thee, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this favour, and I will never cease to honour thee as m special and powerful patron and to all in my power to encourage devotion to thee Amen. St. Jude, pray fo rus and for all who invoke thy aid, St. Jude helper of the hopeless aid me in my distress! Pray for us, that we may appease the Divine Justice and obtain a favourable judgement, Pray for us that we may be admitted into the company of hte blessed to rejoice in the presence of God forever Amen. Blessed Apostle, with confidence we invoke thee! Blessed Apostle, with confidence we invoke thee! Blessed Apostle with confidence we invoke thee! St. Jude helper of the hopeless aid me in my distress! St. Jude helper of the hopeless aid me in my distress! St. Jude helper of the hopeless aid me in my distress! Pray for us that before death we may expiate all our sins by sincere repentance and the worthy reception of the Holy Sacrament. R.K.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.S.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

A fantastic attendance including players, families, coaches and guests were on hand on the night. Tom Campbell, KRFC Youths Manager started proceedings by welcoming everyone and invited Club President Mike Fuller to say a few words on behalf of the club. Mike congratulated everyone on completing what was a tough season, particularly the players and coaches for their hard work across the season. Both deserved recognition for their commitment through thick and thin in what was undoubtedly the worst year weather wise in a long time. Mike stated that these players are the future of the club and after years without a home, our club finally have a home to call our own. Finally he thanked Tom and the parents for their hard work this season. Tom then asked Shane Tydings, a KRFC clubman and member of the Munster Association of Referees to say a few words. Shane discussed rugby from a referees perspective and said referees are facilitators and are not there to catch players out. “A positive attitude” is the most important attribute for a player and team to have, said Shane. Tom thanked Shane before proceeding to hand out the awards. He repeated the congratulations to the players, acknowledged their hard work and stated that anyone in the room could have won the awards given the hard work and attitude shown by all across the season. He thanked the coaches at each age grade for their hard work and commitment shown across the season. Finally before presenting the awards, he thanked Eamonn Courtney and all at the Killarney Oaks for their continued support. U14: Best Newcomer: Padraig Talbot, Most Committed: Evan Mannix, Player of the year: Craig McKenzie Vass U16 Best Newcomer: Christian Komosa, Most Committed: Adam Walsh, Player of the Year: Richard Wallace U18 Player of the year: Dylan Sheahan. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett wishes to advise all of those who may be interested, that the Men’s Club trip to Southerndown, in Wales which was postponed from last year due to it coinciding with the rugby world cup, will take place on the last weekend of August next, priority

will be given to all of the previous participants, but as extra numbers are being considered then any member of the Men’s Club who may have an interest in travelling should make that fact known to Liam asap. The trip will include three rounds of golf, one in the south east of the Country, and two in Wales, at our host club and a second at Pyle and Kenfig, as full details are being finalised then further information will be available from Liam and from Men’s Committee Member’s. Liam was very pleased that two of our Men’s Club teams that were participating in team competitions recently, both advanced to the next round. “The Kingdom Shield” team first round, which is for the Club Senior team’s was played on Killeen on the 7th of May with Killarney Vs Ring of Kerry, finished with all three of our pairings recording victories. Simon Gallivan and Luke Walsh won by 4 holes, Ronan Kelliher and Niall McCarthy won by 1 hole and Shane Horgan and Darren Mulcahy won by 3 holes. Liam remarked that the team was a mixture of experience and youth, and that it was a great experience for those youngsters to take part in a team competition at the very highest level, especially with a win over the existing reigning champions. “The J.B. Carr” team which consists of member’s of more senior age, played their second round against Ceann Sibeal on the 6th of May on Killeen, with all five of our pairings either winning their match, or being up when their match was called in, as Killarney had already secured their victory. Con Healy and John Wall won by 3/2, Seamus O’Connor and Donie McSweeney won by 2/1, Enda Curtayne and Dermot Roche were one up on the 18th green, Derry O’Connor and Padraig Griffin were one up on the 17th, when John Hickey and John Clifford secured the win by 4/3. The next outing for the team will be on Friday 13th of May when they play Waterville at Waterville. This is the first leg of a regional final played on a “home and away” basis. The Club Fourball betterball competition qualifier was played on Killeen on the 8th of May, with 74 pairs participating, in the competition, with 31 pairs qualifying to join the Club Captain and his partner, Michael Howard in the knock-out stages. The scoring in the competition was “just phenomenal’” with only two of the thirteen pairings on 38 points qualifying. 1st Seamus Doheny (20) and Fergus Houlihan (10), 47 points (back 9 holes), 2nd Brendan O’Toole (3) and Conor McNiece (6) 47 points 3rd Tim Kiely (10) and Colin Feeney (11) 44 points 4th Patrick Buckley (16) and Jason Arthur (6) 44 points. Sunday the 15th of May competition will be a single stroke competition on Mahony’s Point. The “Jimmy Bruen” team will have their first (hopefully) outing of the season on Saturday morning next the 14th of May, when joint Team Managers Sean Duggan, Johnny O’Connor and Tom Barry, bring their team to Kanturk to play Doneraile in the first round of the competition, Doneraile have always proven to be formidable opponents, and it will take a very great effort to overcome such opponents. Liam Healy team manager of the Club’s Junior Cup team wishes to advise that any player wishing to be considered for selection on the team should put his name on the list which is now on the Club notice board.

Killarney Celtic

40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion

and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations, we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back). Condolences Killarney Celtic wish to extend sincere condolences to all the family and friends of the late Rita Broderick. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Sem Win First Years All Ireland Last week another prestigious trophy came to St. Brendans College as the First Year Team, coached by Trevor Nagle, Joe Hurley, and Kieran Murphy, beat Colaiste Choilm of Swords 2-1 to win the All Ireland Final. Late in the first half the Swords keeper managed to parry a stinging shot by William Shine but Cian O’Leary neatly slotted the rebound and Dylan O’Callaghan dispatched a nerveless penalty to double the advantage. Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

The Munster Lake Competition proved a tough day on the Lower Lake last Sunday, low catches were reported by nearly all competitors - Kanturk’s Michael Twohig took the overall honours on the day ( Michael is a long time sponsor of the club during our annual competition and we wish him all the very best as he progresses into the inter-provincial round). The highest finisher from the club was Mick Linehan who managed a credible 12th overall and will go on to represent the Club in both TAFI and ITFFA inter-provincial competitions. Staying on the waters of Lough Lein, good news abounds from the Brown Island as there are two chicks presently being fed by busy Sea Eagle parents. The wardens have informed us that they are delighted with the very considerate response by anglers in respecting the request to give the young family as little interruption and disturbance as possible and they have asked us to pass on this Thanks and a request to keep up the good efforts as the chicks get stronger and prepare for flight. On the Club Competition front, we travel to Caragh lake this weekend for the rescheduled competition there and look forward to finally getting on the water there.

Senior Football Championship Launched THE Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship was launched in glorious sunshine in Austin Stack Park on Friday afternoon last. Present were Tomás and Jim Garvey along with Kevin McCarthy representing the sponsors, members of the County Committee led by chairman Patrick O’Sullivan and secretary Peter Twiss and players representing almost all the teams participating in the championship including Paul O’Donoghue of reigning champions South Kerry, Johnny Buckley (Dr Crokes), Donnchadh Walsh (Mid Kerry) and Marc Ó Sé (An Ghaeltacht). Kerry senior football manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice was also present. County Chairman, Patrick O’Sullivan, thanked Garveys for their continued generous sponsorship of the competition, Last year, he said, South Kerry had done very well in winning the championship and he wished South Kerry and St Marys clubman, Bryan Sheehan the very best of luck when leading Kerry in the forthcoming Munster and All Ireland Championships. Kevin McCarthy, representing the sponsor, Garveys Supervalu, said they were delighted to play their part and be associated with the County Championship; “We have a huge involvement with the community and it’s nice to be able to give something back to that community. There is no better way to do that than through a large community based voluntary organisation such as the GAA,” he said. The Garvey’s Supervalu county Senior Football Championship commences this weekend, Saturday, May 14, and Sunday, May 15.

Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship gets underway

It hardly seems like six months since Bryan Sheehan led South Kerry to the Garveys Supervalu senior football championship title in Fitzgerald Stadium but as we head into the summer months

Currow Coiste Na nÓg

U14s: Currow played host to Gneeveguilla in a County League Semi final on Wednesday 4th May. With both teams missing key players Currow proved to be too strong for a under strength Gneeveguilla team and went on to be comprehensive winners on the night. Keel/Listry will be their opponents in the final which will be played on Wednesday 11th May in Direen (Legion) at 7pm. U12s: Our team travelled to Fingue on Tuesday 3rd to play the home side in a back game in the county league, Fingue lead at the break 4-09 to 1-01, but in the second half Currow fought back very well but wasn’t enough on the night as Fingue went on to win on a score line of Fingue 5-12 to Currow 5-06. U6s, U8s, U10s: Our teams travelled to Brosna GAA grounds on Saturday last to play Brosna in a challenge match, further blitz and challenge games will be taking place in the coming weeks. Training continues on Saturday

the Divisional side put their title on the line over the next two weekends. Their meeting with Kerins O’Rahillys in the second game of a double bill in Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Sunday (3.30pm) promises to be one of the more interesting games of the weekend given the number of Kerry players on view. South Kerry will of course be strengthened this year with the addition of St Michaels-Foilmore to their ranks and the likes of Tommy Walsh and Barry John Keane and company will certainly have their work cut. There is an interesting curtain raiser to that game (1.45pm) with St Brendan’s, who have the benefit of a qualifying victory over Shannon Rangers, taking on a Kenmare District side who are a lot of peoples fancy to give the title a shaking with a nice mixture of young and experienced players. The competition gets underway on Saturday evening with another double bill in Lewis Road where East Kerry and Austin Stacks get proceedings underway at 5pm. In the case of divisional sides such as East Kerry, the time to catch them is early in the competition and one never knows what to expect until they actually take the field. Austin Stacks will be all out this year to make up for their early exit in the competition in Round 3 last season. There is another double header in Killorglin on Sunday where Milltown-Castlemaine take on Legion in the opener at 2pm. Following their heart-breaking replay defeat by South Kerry last year, it will be interesting to see how Legion respond this year under the new management of Kieran Cronin. The availability of a fit James O’Donoghue will of course be crucial to their cause. Mid Kerry, boosted by the addition of Laune Rangers this year, entertain Kilcummin in the second game at 3:30. Meanwhile, Rathmore and Dingle, who met in the Club Championship a few weeks back, meet in Rathbeg on Sunday at 2.30pm where the home side

will have to plan without county player Aidan O’Mahony who carries over a suspension from last year’s competition. Also on Sunday at 2.30pm, St Kieran’s host Feale Rangers in Cordal. The draw for Round 2 of the championship will be made live on Radio Kerry at 5.15pm on Sunday evening and the CCC will meet immediately afterwards to make fixtures for the following weekend. The draw will pair the eight winners against each other in Round 2A with the winners of those games advancing to the quarterfinals and the losers advancing to Round 3A. Meanwhile the Round 1 losers will also be paired against each other in Round 2B and the losers of those games will exit the competition while the winners will advance to Round 3B where they will be drawn against the 4 teams in 3A.

morning at 10am in Currow GAA grounds.

The final score was 4-4 to 1-12. Girls Mixed results but two good performances for our girls over the last week. With the original fixture abandoned due to a severe thunderstorm, we met near neighbours Spa to determine the destination of the league points. An end to end game resulted in a Crokes win with all our 23 players contributing. Particular mention to Captain Julie Delaney whose energy drove us over the line in the closing stages. Our second rearranged fixture home to Beaufort stretched our sizeable squad to its limits with a number of players missing for a variety of reasons. However we produced some lovely possession football but were undone by the concession of some fortunate goals by the opposition which gave a deserving victory to Beaufort on the day. Young Emma Kelly was the pick of the Crokes players for her confident display in possession but all the team battled right to the end. Congratulations Congratulations to Kerry Munster Under 16’s Champions especially to Dasha and Kate.

Dr Crokes

Juvenile football notes Academy Kerins O’Rahillys boys and girls teams will be travelling to Lewis Road on Saturday 14th May, to play our under 6, under 8 and under 10 teams. Could all Crokes players please attend. Under 8 Go-Games The U8 boys continue their Go-Games in Spa this Friday, 13th May at 5.30pm. Under 14 On Wednesday, the Amber team recorded a fantastic 4-12 to 2-8 victory over Austin Stacks and now qualify for the county final. Twenty-four hours later, the Black team followed suit and booked their place in the county division one final. They overcame local rivals Legion in a hard-fought 4-8 to 3-9 win in Direen. Under 16 The U16 team were very unlucky to lose to Firies in the East Kerry League final on a Sunday evening in Beaufort. It was closely contested game with solitary point separating the sides in the end.

Kerry Minors put their titles on the line

All Ireland minor champions Kerry, put their Munster and All Ireland titles on the line when they travel to Milltown-Malbay to play Clare in the Electric Ireland Munster GAA football semi final on this Wednesday evening at 7pm. The Kerry management make two changes in personnel from the side that defeated Waterford in Round 1. Last year’s goalkeeper, Billy Courtney, replaces Seán Ó Lúing in goal and Michael Potts of Dr Crokes starts in the half back line in place of his clubmate David Naughton. The team contains two of the starting fifteen from last year’s All Ireland final win over Tipperary, Billy Courtney and Sean O’Shea. Three subs who played in that final, Daniel O’Brien, Mike Breen and Graham O’Sullivan, also make the starting fifteen while Bryan Sweeney who also played in last year’s final, is included among the subs. Five of the St Brendan’s Killarney Hogan Cup winning team are included, Billy Courtney, Daniel O’Brien, Michael

Potts, Dara Moynihan and David Clifford. The team is captained by Seán O’Shea of Kenmare. It will be recalled that Kerry had a facile first round victory over Waterford while Clare surprised Limerick who then went on to knock out a Tipperary team that had put it up to Cork for long periods of their first round meeting. The winners of Wednesday’s game play Cork or Limerick in the Munster final on July 3. A special late ferry will leave Killimer for Tarbert at 9.30am to cater for Kerry supporters returning to Kerry after the game.

Workshop for Health and Wellbeing Officers

The County Committee is holding a Health and Wellbeing workshop for Club/District Board Health and Wellbeing Officers at two venues in the coming weeks. The first is on Thursday, May 12, in the Killarney Heights Hotel at 7.30pm; the second on Tuesday, May 17, in Austin Stack Park Tralee also at 7.30pm. Places will be limited for these workshops so clubs are asked to confirm attendance to the Chairperson of the Health and Wellbeing Committee, Bernie Reen, either by email at childrensofficer.kerry@ gaa.ie or by phone 087-2020143 to book their place. Kerry Hurlers go under to Westmeath in LHC

There was disappointment for the Kerry hurlers and supporters on Saturday last when they were defeated by Westmeath, 1-18 to 1-13, in Round 2 of the Leinster Senior Championship round robin series. All is not lost for the Kingdom, as a win over Offaly in their final game will still see them qualify for the knockout stages. This game will take place on Sunday week, May 22, at O’Connor Park, Tullamore, 3pm.

East Kerry Junior League There are just two rounds remaining to be played in the East Kerry Junior league. Last week three round 5 games and two round 4 back games were played. Killarney Legion and Dr Crokes played an entertaining game that ended with the sides level. Killarney Legion 3-05 Dr Crokes 1-11. Gneeveguilla proved too strong for Glenflesk and ran out winners Gneeveguilla 1-14 Glenflesk 0-11, while Kilcummin came out on top against Spa 1-9 to 0-9. The two round 4 games saw Glenflesk win by the minimum against Kilcummin - Glenflesk 1-11 Kilcummin 0-13 while the Killarney Legion versus Rathmore game ended in a draw. With just two rounds remaining to be played in the league, Dr Crokes are at the top of the league table, on 7 points followed by Gneeveguilla and Legion on 6 points each. Coiste Na nÓg U12 Boys Played away to Ballyheigue this weekend. Unfortunately, after a strong showing in the first half, a stronger Ballyheigue side, pulled away from us in the second half. Good performances from our goalkeeper Steven Wickham, Christopher Healy, Rian O’Neill, Timmy Moynihan, Cathal Kelly & David O’Sullivan kept us in the game. This is a very young team with great potential. Ladies Football U12 Girls Spa 3-3 Rathmore 4-1 This was a cracker of a game with only a point to separate both teams in the end. Great play by Emma Morrissey, Elaine Kelly, Aisling Cahill, Laura O’Carroll Aoife O’Donoghue and Leah O’Donoghue. U14 Girls The girls were very busy this week with 2 games. First up we played Dr. Crokes in Spa. A close game until the last few minutes when our neighbours scored some excellent scores. Great play by Elena O’Donoghue, Erin Holland, Ciara Moynihan, Grace Courtney, Aoibhe O’Doherty, Sarah O’Sullivan and Clodagh O’Connor. Second game was also at home to Listowel. Another great game and we lead by a healthy margin

U16’s retain Munster title after titanic battle. Kerry 2-9 Cork 2-5. Kerry had to dig deep and endure a last 10 minute running battle with Cork to retain their Munster crown, which was played in wet greasy conditions in the Mallow GAA Complex earlier today and was your typical championship game as both sides refused to lie down. Captain Ciara O’Brien Laune Rangers accepted the cup from the Munster Secretary to the joy of the Kerry team,

The Mid Kerry side played very well with the home side chasing shadows on occasions. Final score Tralee 1-06 Beaufort 7-22, goals for the away side from Bernie Breen, Sarah Houlihan, Fiadhna Tangney, Amy Foley & Maria O’Shea. With Katelyn O’Sullivan scoring the Tralee side’s goal.
