Golden moments as Killarney and Kerry sparkle KILLARNEY made a clean sweep this week as it scooped a gold medal in this year’s national Tidy Towns competition. The cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin, praised all involved. “I wish to extend my congratulations to all concerned in Killarney being successful in winning gold in this year’s Tidy Towns competition,” said Cllr Cronin. “In particular I want to thank the Killarney Tidy Towns committee and all the volunteers who put in a tremendous effort and give so much of their time and commitment in keeping Killarney looking so beautiful. I also wish to recognise the work done by the council staff and management in Killarney which has again

ensured that with broad cooperation and support Killarney town has secured gold medal status.” In fact, it was a case of celebrations all round as overall the county notched five gold medals, the others going to Tralee, Listowel, Kenmare and Sneem. Kerry also had cause to celebrate the fact that Listowel was named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town. Knightstown and Portmagee, meanwhile, received bronze honours. Johnny McGuire of Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns said: “We’re used to being the premier county for bringing home football titles but now Kerry’s probably the premier county in Ireland for Tidy Towns.”

Killarney is abuzz with excitement IT HAS to have been one of the most pleasantly extended tourism seasons in memory in town. Just last week, no matter what evening you chose to cruise through town, the streets were filled with people of all ages savouring the atmosphere, as if it was the height of the summer. Balmy temperatures aside, many in the business community are only too pleased to be run off their feet so late into the year. Given such an ambience, it’s not surprising that Killarney retained its Purple Flag recognising its excellence in evening entertainment. Killarney also soaked up the plaudits earlier this week as it took a bow for achieving a gold medal in the SuperValu National Tidy Towns Competition, increasing its points again this year, from 321 to 323. Considering our population increase so much during the summer months, it is a remarkable achieve-

ment indeed with the under-pressure volunteers, council staff and management always coming up trumps. Killarney Advertiser is delighted to be media partner for Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns and congratulates all involved. It was heart-warming also to see the support elicited throughout the community when Killarney Gardaí hosted a fundraiser for a very popular new recruit. Little Ceejay McArdle, from Co Monaghan, has been welcomed as the force’s honorary member and his colleagues in Killarney were delighted with the wonderful support shown at a coffee morning fundraiser hosted in the Killarney Plaza on Tuesday; see page 16 for our coverage. The cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, said the wins for the Kerry towns and villages were testament to the outstanding efforts of volunteers across the county who keep their towns looking so well. “This is wonderful news for Kerry and the various towns involved. I congratulate in a special way the five gold medal winners as well as Listowel which is Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town for the second year running, which is no mean achievement,” said Cllr O’Shea. “These are truly magnificent results for our county.” The north Dublin coastal village of Skerries has won the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition for the first time.

ONCE again Killarney has stepped up to the mark and retained its Purple Flag status. There was a full assessment of Killarney’s nighttime economy in August and the town has passed the test with flying colours. Purple Flag is the international accreditation for town centres in the evening and at night from 5pm to 5am. Like a Blue Flag, centres that achieve the required standards of 30 criteria can fly the flag. Paul O’Neill, chairman of the Purple Flag Working Group, expressed his gratitude to a real team effort within the business and wider community: “There really was a fantastic buy-in from the whole town during the adjudication. I have to thank everyone that helped make it a successful examination. “The assessors received a warm Killarney welcome wherever they went. Management and staff were knowledgeable and informative. We have a few little areas to work on for future improvement but that’s something to work towards,” he said. The assessors were particularly impressed with Killarney House and Gardens and remarked that it will be a major asset in offering a variety of evening services. “It is another feather in the cap for the town and reinforces what we already know, that Killarney provides facilities, attractions and a unique atmosphere to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,” Paul added. The Killarney Purple Flag working group is a joint initiative between the Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and Kerry County Council. Killarney is one of 18 towns in Ireland to attain a Purple Flag. The annual Purple Flag weekend takes place from October 7 to 9 and will feature a family fun day in the town centre on Saturday, October 8. “We want to celebrate the success of retaining our Purple Flag status with everyone. It’s a bit of fun for the family so we invite everyone to Main Street from 3pm to 6pm on Saturday 8th next,” said Paul. Cllr Niall Kelleher, deputy mayor of Killarney, said: “I would like to congratulate Killarney and especially the Chamber of tourism & Commerce on retaining this award. “It’s an extremely important accolade to achieve. Well done to all involved.”

Question

I am self-employed and make a tax return each year. What is the new tax credit for self-employed people? How do I apply for it? Answer

www.medorblinds.com

10

Killarney Advertiser 30.09.16

From 1 January 2016, a new Earned Income tax credit of €550 is available for selfemployed people (in addition to the normal personal tax credits and other reliefs). Proprietary directors who are not eligible for the PAYE employee tax credit can also claim this credit. This Earned Income Tax Credit is calculated at 20% of your self-employed (or earned) income. It does not include any earned income that is taken into account for the PAYE employee tax credit. Note that if you also qualify for the PAYE tax credit, the combined value of both tax credits cannot exceed €1,650. The maximum relief for 2016 is €550. However, if your earned income is below €2,750, the tax credit is restricted to 20% of the income. For example, if your total earned income is €2,000 your maximum tax credit is 20% of this or €400. As a self-employed person you pay tax under the self-assessment system. Under this system (known as "Pay and File") you must file your return, complete a selfassessment, and you must pay the balance of tax outstanding for the previous year. At the same time, you must pay preliminary tax (an estimate of tax due for your current trading year) for the current year. When you pay preliminary tax for 2016 you can include the Earned Income tax credit in your calculations. However the new Earned Income tax credit is not available for the 2015 tax year. The date for payment of tax and filing of returns is 31 October each year. For 2016, if you file your tax return online using the Revenue Online Service (ROS), the due date is extended to 10 November 2016. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Lights, cameras and action for annual Kerry Film Festival

Reverend Simon Lumby, Killarney Chamber president Kate O'Leary and Paul O'Neill at the launch of Kerry Film Festival.

GREAT KERRY STORYTELLER BEING HONOURED LEGENDARY seanchai (storyteller) Eamon Kelly will be remembered in his Kerry birthplace at the weekend. The art of storytelling will be the theme of the Eamon Kelly Weekend, in Gneeveguilla, with children and adults taking part. Kelly, who was born in Gullane, Gneeveguilla, in 1914 and died in 2001, was also an accomplished actor who performed many times in the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and leading theatres overseas. This Friday night (Sepembert 30), well-known storyteller of the modern era, Raymond O’Sullivan, Killarney, will set the scene for the weekend with a visit to public houses in Gneeveguilla village and the local GAA club bar. Mr O’Sullivan has also been visiting local schools to get children interested and there will be a children’s storytelling session in Teach Failte, Gneeveguilla, on Saturday from 5pm to 6.30pm. At the same venue on Saturday night, there will be more storytelling, as well as music, song and dance, starting at 8pm. On Sunday, Gneeveguilla-born journalist and editor of the Sliabh Luachra Journal Donal Hickey will conduct a bus tour of the area. Starting in the village at 11.30am, the tour itinerary includes stops at the Eamon Kelly statue, his birthplace and the birthplaces of leading local poets Eoghan Ruadh O Suilleabhain and Aodghan O Rathaille. The tour is expected to completed by 1pm. The commemorative weekend follows a similar event last October and this time the emphasis is on getting people, young and old, to tell stories. Organising committee chairman Cormac Collins said that, as well as honouring Eamon Kelly, the aim is to keep the storytelling tradition alive in the Sliabh Luachra region. ‘’The area is already famed for its rich store of traditional music and dance and its poets, but the art of storytelling is also an intrinsic part of that heritage,’’ he said. The weekend is supported by Cumann Luachra, IRD Duhallow and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

KILLARNEY came into its own as a Hollywood-style entity on Wednesday night as Scotts Hotel in the town hosted the launch for the 17th annual Kerry Film Festival (KFF). In advance of the launch, there was a private screening of Kerry filmmaker James Pembroke's film, Living with Lyme Disease, at Cinema Killarney. The festival highlights will include the world premiere of two Kerry feature movies, Making It and Brackenmore, the Irish premiere of two music documentary films, Junun and We Are X, a special 1916 film commemoration to include a screening of Mise Éire in a association with the IFI and a curated selection of Irish and international short films and events. The 17th edition of the festival will present 16 programmes of short film in 2016. The short film programme is an integral part of the Kerry Film Festival schedule and this year films were submitted from Kerry to Japan to Peru and further afield. The festival will open and close with the world premieres of two Made in Kerry feature films, Making It and Brackenmore at Cinema Killarney. The production of these films is a testament to the determination of production companies filming in Kerry and the wealth of locations in Kerry suitable for filming. A new element to the festival is the introduction of the short film market aimed at emerging and experienced filmmakers. The artistic director of the Kerry Film Festival, Maeve McGrath, said: “The short film has always had centre stage in the Kerry Film Festival Programme and this year we have an extraordinary selection of films screening. Along with that, we are placing a focus on the short film form at our Short Film Market with some very exciting speakers and guests invited.” For more information see www. kerryfilmfestival.com or call 066-712 9934.

There’s magic in the air in Muckross

A blacksmith at work at Muckross Christmas Magic. PICTURE: VALERIE O'SULLIVAN

EMBARK on a magical journey at Muckross this Christmas. Santa Claus is scheduled to land his sleigh in Muckross this November 28 where he will take up residence there for the festive season, meeting and greeting his many young friends. The Mucklorians, who are cousins of Santa’s elves at the North Pole, have been busy preparing for the arrival of Santa and their cousins. A hundred years ago this year the Spirit of Christmas was threatened due to a shortage of Mican at the North Pole. “Mican is the magic dust that makes Christmas happen,” said a spokesperson for Muckross Christmas Magic.

“Santa sent out six of his chief elves to find a new supply to ensure the magic of Christmas continued for all the children of the world. Here in the heart of Muckross in 1915 they discovered a supply of Mican.” So what to expect once you arrive? “Our gatekeeper will check your tickets and set you on a magical journey this Christmas season,” added the spokesperson. “Travel down Christmas Avenue by horsedrawn carriage to the Mucklorian Mining Village. Stand at awe and admire their gigantic Christmas tree. Watch as the blacksmith sends sparks into the winter air. “Explore the village where the

Mucklorians live, check and see if under their beds are clean. Turn the magic mixing drum and share your Christmas wishes to make the magic come true.” Top tip: Make sure your letters are ready for Santa’s Post Office, where you can get them stamped and filed. Meet Mrs Claus for storytelling as you sip hot chocolate. “You will also get to count the parcels with the elves, stir the cookie bowl in the elves’ kitchen all before your special meeting with Santa,” added the spokesperson. Tickets go on sale on October 3 at 9am on www.muckross-house.ie Additional dates to be released subject to demand.

Killarney Gardaí brew up support to help their youngest colleague, Ceejay

KILLARNEY GARDAÍ opened their hearts to the youngest honorary member of the force, Ceejay McArdle, when they discovered the four-year-old dreams of being a garda when he grows up. The Killarney officers were determined to stretch out the hand of friendship to Ceejay and his family as the youngster bravely battles illness. A full house resulted when they issued an invitation to everyone to join them for a coffee morning in the Window Lounge in the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Tuesday. “We are hoping to raise funds for our newest and smallest member of An Garda Síochána,” said Garda Gillian Mac Eoin who together with Superintendent Flor Murphy and Sergeant Dermot O’Connell pulled out all the stops to brew up support for Ceejay. The four-year-old boy, from Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, was diagnosed with leukaemia two years ago and has been undergoing treatment for cancer in St John’s Ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, for the last two years. “We can only imagine how traumatic such treatment is on such a little man,” said Garda Mac Eoin. Ceejay has always had a huge interest in the Gardaí and police work. “It is not even makebelieve with him, if you were to ask Ceejay whether he would like to be a guard when he grows up he would tell you, ‘but I already am a guard!’,” his dad Marcus McArdle told Killarney Advertiser. An Garda Siochána and police forces around the world have been sending Ceejay “get well soon” messages in an effort to cheer him up. “Ceejay started to become a little celebrity mascot for police forces all over the world,” added Garda Mac Eoin. “Ceejay now has his own official Garda uniform, custom-made to fit him and earlier this year he ‘graduated’ from the Garda College in Templemore, being made an honorary member of the force by Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan.” Gardaí decided to host the coffee mornings to generate funds towards sending Ceejay and his parents to New York so that he can take up an invitation from the NYPD to march in the St Patrick’s Day parade with his Garda and NYPD colleagues.

KILLARNEY people are being urged to respond to a rallying cry to help refugees in dire need. SHOP FOR YOUR HEALTH DAY THE HeartBeat support group in Killarney has teamed up with Killarney Outlet Centre, the primary care teams and the Health Service Executive to present a unique event entitled Shop For Health Day at the outlet centre next Friday, October 7. The event takes place from 10am to 6pm and will offer a whole host of services and advice for free. “The object of the day is to provide easy access to health experts in a relaxed atmosphere and to get people talking about their health and picking up information that normally might not be as readily available to them,” said organiser Billy DF O’Sullivan of HeartBeat. “The units in the centre will also be involved with many health-orientated offers available on the day.” This day of free advice and services will give you opportunities to talk to health professionals such as a diabetes nurse specialist, physiotherapist, speech and language therapist, and diet and mental health specialists. Screening services will be available and GPs will attend during the day also. The Kerry Citizens Information Service will also have a presence, as will the Order of Malta, Killarney Community Services, Kerry Weight Challenge, MS Killarney/South Kerry, and breathing coach Eoin Burns. Erina MacSweeney will offer advice on non-intrusive heart checks. Kerry Volunteer Group, Audiology Medical Services, Home Chair Pilates, NCBI Sight Loss, Unislim, Strutters Walking Group and many more will also be available. “We are expecting even more to get involved between now and October 7,” added Billy. “Shop For Health Day will reach out to all ages in the community with advice and information that hopefully will be of use to those who participate.”

Hats off to toe-tappingly fantastic fundraising team STETSONS were all the rage in Killarney last Friday as the community united at the INEC to raise money for St John’s Ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Amy O’Connor, nine, from Killarney, has been undergoing treatment at the hospital. The fundraiser was organised in association with the INEC and Killarney Celtic Football Club. “On behalf of the organising committee, can I thank everyone who supported the benefit night," said Angie Kissane. The night kicked off with local musical artistes providing entertainment along with line-dancing, a rodeo bull and John Wayne’s own horse! The Ultimate Garth Brooks Experience and Friends in Low Places Band followed by DJ Gavin ensured dancing continued until late.

GP service in Rathmore to be extended THE general practice service in Rathmore is to be extended. Following the granting of planning permission for The Doctor Surgery at the Social Action Group premises in Rathmore an extended service has been announced from October 3 on a Monday and Tuesday morning and all day Thursday. Deputy Danny Healy-Rae has welcomed the announcement. “This is good news for the people of Rathmore, Gneeveguilla and the surrounding areas,” he said. Dr Christina Walsh McCarthy is going to increase her presence in Rathmore to three days a week - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in two rooms provided by the Social Action Group. House calls will also be provided. “I am glad to have worked hard on this matter for over two years and hope that patients and the entire community are happy with this improvement in service.” Local Fianna Fail councillor Niall Kelleher welcomed the extra hours but said it was just a token and it was crucial to have a fulltime doctor’s presence in Rathmore. “While the extra hours are a step in a positive direction it's a token only towards the people of Rathmore, Gneevegullia, Knocknagree and Shrone, who have been without a service for nearly two years now,” said local Fianna Fail councillor Niall Kelleher. A meeting of the action plan committee took place on Monday night in the Fr Corridan Centre, Rathmore, to discuss the steps to be taken. “It's important to have a full time Doctor presence in Rathmore,” said Cllr Kelleher. “The community council have agreed to assist the doctor in building up the practice and keeping our community vibrant but we require more than the service that's been offered.”

Athletes get on their marks in Killarney

APPLAUSE befitting an Olympic event greeted the 300-plus people who crossed the finish line after completing the 10-mile road race in Killarney last Saturday. Runners arrived for the event from across Ireland, USA, Canada, UK, Spain, Mexico and Chile. They joined local runners in a race that has formed part of the fundraising for the Killarney microtrack project over the last three years. A yellow weather warning issued the previous evening didn't deter participants and the stewards who took the decision to progress with the race. “After a 9am start and a shower the weather cleared up rapidly for the runners who took to the road and enjoyed a classic race taking in Aghadoe and Killarney National Park and finishing at St Brendan's College,” said organiser Jerry Griffin. “The atmosphere and welcome by members of the South/East Kerry Rural Recreational Track Ltd, Killarney Valley AC, athletics clubs in Kerry, Sean Coffey, principal of St Brendan's College, friends, family and great Killarney community spirit lifted all the finishers in an almost mini-Olympic cauldron Stephen Kiely, Katie O'Connell, Wayne Young, Cora O'Driscoll and Conor Lucey taking part in the Killarney 10 mile road race on Saturday. applause for all.” The winner of the event this year was Phillip Harty of west Waterford ac in a solid time of 53:51 for the 10 miles. Already this year Phillip has won the Cork city marathon, Waterford marathon and the Limerick half marathon. The women’s winner was Deirdre Nagle of Eagle AC in 1:08:43. The greatest individual achievements came from the Killarney Valley AC members “Fit for Life” group who completed the 10-mile distance for the very first time. One other notable achievement was Geraldine Clifford, wife of the late Richard Clifford to whose memory the winner’s cup is dedicated. Geraldine completed 10 miles for the first time in a time of 1:59:01 and was joined in the race by her daughter Ashling, who finished in a credible position on the day. “For the wider Killarney community, as a result of the entry fee, a sizeable sum was raised for the Killarney community microtrack project and are big winners as a result, thanks to sponsors Tricel and Centra (at the reeks),” added Jerry.

South Kerry Ploughing Championships cheque presentation THE Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club will put charity centre stage next weekend. The club, which organised the recent South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show, will make cheque presentations to the four beneficiaries, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland, the Kerry-Cork Health link Bus and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association. The event, which takes place on Saturday, October 8, in the Travel Inn, Fossa, will also feature the presentation of the ploughing trophies following the championships, which took place on September 11. A raffle for a variety of prizes will also feature, with

prizes including a weekend break away in The Maritime Hotel, Bantry, dinner vouchers, a hamper from Foley’s Spar, Fossa, a four-ball in Beaufort Golf Course, tickets to shows in the INEC and a night’s stay in the five-star Europe Hotel (all kindly sponsored). “As we had to cancel most of the competitions (dog show and best-dressed lady and man, for instance) that were due to take place on the day, these prizes are now up for grabs and the charities will benefit from the takings of the draw,” said chairman Tom Leslie. “There will be music and finger food on the night and everyone is invited to come along.” The Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association will

also be drawing the winners for its monster draw including the first prize of a Ford Anglia Vintage car and the car will be there on the night. Tom thanked all involved and all volunteers wile Tony and Thomas Wharton thanked those who sponsored the ploughing plots, with a special thanks to Thomas Healy, Mike Sullivan and Derrick Driscoll who marked out the ploughing plots on the Saturday before the event, and Denis Tangney, Mike McKenna and Sean Tangney who were involved with the threshing, and to Liam Courtney, John Courtney, John Dineen, Jamie Mannix, Liam Wharton, Jamie Riordan and Joey.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Memories of the Áras Phádraig in days gone by FOLLOWING Killarney Advertiser’s news item on the Áras Phádraig (September 9) I would like to say I would be delighted to see the Áras Phádraig in use again as I remember so many events taking place there over the years. One of these was a big card drive that was run by the Dr Crokes GAA Club on Sunday evenings. These card drives started not long after the hall opened, in the 1960s. I can remember the smell of fresh paint in the hall as the card drives were played. They would go on right throughout the day, starting at 1pm and finishing at 9pm. There were several rounds followed by the final. Some of the players would also take the opportunity to go down to Jimmy O’Brien’s Bar or the McSweeney Arms Hotel during the event. There would be a big round table in the middle of the hall and eight players would sit around it for the final. I remember one particular game very clearly. Excitement was in the air and the finalists were banging on the table so much that the vibrations led to the chandelier crashing down from the ceiling on to the table. There was a big crowd looking on. Someone must have been looking down on them that day as no one was hit. The broken glass was cleared away and the game carried on. I remember the Áras Phádraig as the venue for whist drives, plays staged by the Dóchas Drama Group and of course a performance by Eamon Kelly. During that show you could have heard a pin drop. Why this facility was left idle so long is a mystery. Michael Cronin, Two Mile School, Killarney

Safety at Aghadoe AT THE recent Killarney Municipal area meeting I asked that the council would, in the interest of pedestrian safety, erect advance warning signs at Aghadoe. Many hundreds of visitors on a daily basis during the summer months cross the road from the Aghadoe car park to the wonderful viewing point overlooking the lakes. This is a very busy roadway and tit is imperative that motorists are given sufficient advance warning of people crossing. Some of the people crossing are elderly and are unable to walk very quickly. The council committed to examine the location and gave an assurance that the necessary signage will be erected. I will allocate funds from my councillor's allocation for the project. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

Old Kenmare Road proposal leads to wedding bells BY EVE KELLIHER

T

HIS bride and groom made tracks from Australia to Kerry to celebrate their big day. Kilcummin native Kieran Lynch exchanged vows with his bride Maire Moloughney-O’Sullivan from Cork in a ceremony led by Fr Joe Begley and Fr John Lucid in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Kilcummin. The couple, who now live in Geelong, an hour outside Melbourne in Australia, held their reception in the five-star Muckross Park Hotel, Killarney. Kieran’s mother and father Kathleen and Michael Lynch and Maire’s parents Catherine Moloughney-O’Sullivan and Jerry O’Sullivan helped them plan their big day to perfection. Maire’s sister Katie O’Sullivan Varelias was maid of honour while Kieran’s friend Michael Fleming was best man. The groom’s sister Marguerite Lynch joined forces with the brides’ friends Rachel Carr, Laura Trimble-Thompson and Ekaterini Karabatos in the role of bridesmaids with Kieran’s niece Kate Lynch O’Doherty as junior bridesmaid. Kieran’s friends Brian Dunne, Michael Finn, Jason O’Connor and Sean O’Doherty were groomsmen.

The groom’s nieces Mia and Ellie Lynch-O’Doherty were flower girls. Maire and Kieran first met in The Celtic Club in Melbourne four-and-a-half years ago. Kieran proposed to Maire on the Old Kenmare Road. “We returned to the same spot for photos on our wedding day,” said Maire. Husband and wife team The Woodards captured the wedding on camera, working alongside the videographer Thady Kavanagh from Film Company of Ireland. “Our big day was absolute perfection – a day full of love and laughter,” said Maire. The bride looked stunning in a Lazaro gown, while the bridal makeup was by Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio with hairstyling by Jane McMonagle. As for their honeymoon destination? Maire answered: “Costa del Kilcummin! As Kieran is living away from his family all of the time we decided to stay local to spend time with his family. We spent a few days in Parknasilla Resort & Spa for a mini-moon,” said Maire. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

KWD celebrates three decades of service Guess who's 21? Love from all of us

KWD Recycling celebrated its 30th anniversary at the South Kerry Ploughing Championships recently with three decades of service vehicles onsite. This included the original “tractor skip unit” bought by Sean Murphy in 1986, the very first new KWD truck which was purchased in 1996, the current 2006 skip truck and the latest bin collection vehicle to be added to its fleet in 2016. Also on show was the Murphy Family Massey Ferguson 148 which was fully restored especially for the event and created a lot of interest from tractor enthusiasts. KWD also had one of its many pop-up stations supplying food waste caddy liners – which were free to customers – and experienced large numbers of people calling throughout the day. Also on show on the day was the “KWD County Cleanup” Beetle which highlighted awareness for the annual “KWD County Clean-up” that’s sponsored by KWD and which has grown from strength to

strength over the last number of years, with many other County’s now imitating the Kerry initiative. “We have come a long way since 1986 and currently employ over 100 people directly between our service department and our new state-of-the-art recycling facility,” said Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling. “We cover all of Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick for domestic and commercial collections and are dedicated as always to providing the most cost effective and efficient service available. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their valued business over that last 30 years and look forward to the next 30 years of service. If anyone would like more information about KWD Recycling’s excellent service please log onto www.kwd.ie or call 1850 373737 and one of our operators will be more than happy to hear from you.”

County Championship Quarter-Final

Can anyone stop the Crokes? Adam Moynihan previews the showdown between Dr Crokes and Kerins O’Rahillys which takes place in Austin Stack Park, Tralee, tomorrow, Saturday, October 1, at 1.30pm

E

IGHT teams remain in this year’s championship and they’ll each believe they’re in with a realistic chance at the title; after all it’s just three games and we’ve had enough surprises in the world of sport this year to know that anything can happen. One team in particular has caught the eye, however, and it will take something special to derail their quest for redemption. 2015 didn’t exactly pan out the way the Crokes wanted it to. Just two weeks after losing the club championship final to Dingle they were dumped out of the county championship by Rathmore. Winners in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, this was the second year in a row they failed to make even the semifinal of Kerry’s premier competition. This would have been hard enough to take in isolation, but with Legion earning so many plaudits en route to their first county final in 69 years it was an unusually worrisome time to be Crokes fan. You can be sure it was a relief to many to see the green and white bunting come down from above the streets of Killarney last winter, and you can be even more sure the Crokes players were determined that 2016 would be a different story. They laid down a marker on the opening day of the county league (which doubled up once again as the final for the year before) with a 3-15 to 3-9 victory over Austin Stacks. Unfortunately for everyone else in Division 1, this was a sign of things to come. Crokes were ruthless from the off and made light work of virtually every team they came up against, finishing the campaign on top of the pile.

With an astonishing 257 points scored and just 119 points conceded in eleven games, their points difference of +138 betters that of their nearest rivals Austin Stacks by 95. Dingle and Templenoe, who finished joint third, had a points difference of just +16 and -12 respectively. Over the course of their last sixteen games (eleven league, three club championship and two county championship) they’ve averaged 2-17 per game. They’ve only failed to find the net in three of those contests, and they’ve scored three or more goals on six occasions – breaking the thirty-point barrier four times in the process. At the other end Shane Murphy, who has been a revelation between the posts since joining the club, has kept a clean sheet in 50% of their games. It’s fair to say that Kerins O’Rahillys face a daunting task in trying to stop the Crokes on Saturday, although interestingly they’re one of those three teams who have managed to keep a clean sheet against them already this season (Crokes won the league fixture 0-13 to 0-9 in Strand Road). And as impressive as Crokes have been, Stacks proved in the Club Championship final that they’re not infallible. With a potentially explosive forward including the likes of Tommy Walsh, Barry John Keane and Jack Savage, Rahillys are certainly in with a chance of causing an upset but the numbers don’t lie: Crokes are on a mission this year. They’ll take some stopping.

Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy

Return of Munster Junior League rugby THIS weekend sees the return of Munster Junior League rugby across the province and Killarney RFC who play in Division 3, have a road trip on Sunday to look forward to. The lads make the trip to County Waterford to take on Dungarvan RFC who were relegated from Division 2 last season. Then it’s a first home game for the lads the following week as they take on Kerry rivals Corca Dhuibhne, who along with Killorglin RFC make up the Kerry contingent in the Division this year. Some great games ahead over the next few months, so let’s get out and support the lads!

Minis

This weekend we will have no minis rugby on Saturday, as the coaches take part in the Munster Rugby Mini Rugby course, which will take place in the Institute of Tralee for the first time ever. With workshops and practical training given over Friday and Saturday, these courses are great for new coaches as well as giving more experienced coaches some great ideas. Munster Rugby are really on the ball with regards to coach development and it’s great to see our own rugby club supporting the coaches with such training, the fruits of which will be seen on the training field as well as in matches. Keep posted next week for more.

Welcome

M

OVING towards winter our minds automatically go towards cosiness and warmth, fires, boxsets and of course a good book.

We are looking at stoves and fireplaces the month, so if you’re thinking of investing in a new stove, take a look at our top picks for the hearth of your home. Our reader’s residence in Beaufort is an amazing new build with all the interiors sourced locally.

My favourite pieces this month are the Fama Melba chair from Moriarty’s of Killorglin and the large library bookcase from Mylestone Interiors. All I need now is a good book and a Nespresso machine from MD O’Shea’s – roll on winter!

Yours in decorating,

WHILE summer is a time we look outside our homes to the garden, patio and just being in the sun (even the small bit we get in Ireland!) winter is a time when our focus turns inward. We dream of cosy nights in with a good book, a fire and even a hot chocolate as we look out at the wind and rain. Creating this can mean jut a simple rearrangement of furniture pulling your pieces around a fire or stove to create a cosy atmosphere for family nights in or entertaining, extra throws and pillows are a great way to warm up your room and make it more inviting. Side tables are a must for your favourite book and cup of hot chocolate to get you through the long winter nights. Rugs are also a great way of warming a room, especially if you have wooden floors. If budget doesn’t allow, try a quick fix such as some candles or a lamp or two rather than turning on the centre light give instant warmth.

Beyond the hall door in Beaufort

WE WERE extremely impressed when we visited the fabulous residence of one of our readers. This new-build in Beaufort was designed as a “forever home” and it shows. Constructed three years ago, it boasts awe-inspiring views of the Gap of Dunloe. As well as using her flair for interiors, the owner was determined to source everything locally. Most of the furniture in the residence was sourced in Hal-Lou, while the tiles in the entrance hall and kitchen/dining area are Atlas Concorde, from O’Callaghan’s National Tile Killarney. The paint colours are all Colourtrend (which can be bought in Killarney Hardware) and Farrow & Ball (Mylestone Interiors, Killarney) while the wallpaper in the hallway is from Hal-Lou, Killarney. The boy’s bedroom sports Ralph Lauren striped wallpaper, available from the Fabulous Fabric Company, Ballyvourney. The sumptuous carpets were purchased in Killarney Furniture & Carpets, while the clock over the staircase is from Mylestone Interiors. The windows are floor-to-ceiling windows wherever possible to maximise the light flowing into the house. The owner chose Aluclad windows from Munster Joinery. What really wowed us was the thought that went into the design and layout of the home; for instance, two boys’ bedrooms open into a single ensuite. Meanwhile, the taupe neutrals of the paintwork throughout the house set off the eye-catching paintings, with a Mark Eldred oil painting in the living room and colourful parrot canvases from Hal-Lou elsewhere. We would like to thank this reader for welcoming us into her amazing home!

We all need our little pleasures We all need our little pleasures in life, mine at the moment is Victoria, a wonderful new itv series based on the early life of Queen Victoria, from her accession to the throne at the tender age of 18 through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. For the interiors and costumes alone its worth watching this series. Victoria has given her name to the Victorian era, a time of ornate carving rich fabrics, while a whole room theme in this design can be over powering, the new way of using large ornate piecesis to make them centre stage and pare back everything else. This beautiful bed from Corcorans would be the centre-piece of any room. The sense of enclosure created by four poster beds is psychologically comforting, hence, leading to a better night's sleep.

Tintéain Mhuscraí Tintéain Mhuscraí sells, professionally designs and installs all types of beautiful fireplaces. From small beginnings back in 1979 they have grown to be one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of fireplaces in Munster. They pride themselves on giving special personal attention to all of their customers and only producing the highest quality products. All products can be manufactured to customer specifications, measurements and colours. Fireplace mantles can be produced in wood, sandstone or marble as preferred. Fireplace prices start from €950.

Winter pots During the cold months of January and February, when the setting is bleak and the sky is grey, winter containers can cheer up the soul and add a colourful punch to the landscape. Many gardeners give up on their potted creations in the fall, but that can be a horrible waste because winter is when colour and interest are most vital. What pots to use? Fiberglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, and stone are the best weatherresistant containers to use; terra-cotta will eventually expand and crack with repeated freezing and thawing. What plants work best? These mainly flower in spring, but cyclamen, winter-flowering pansy, viola, primula and polyanthus will flower intermittently during mild spells in winter.

Wellbeing evening at Gaelscoil Faithleann

ALL are welcome to attend an evening focusing on wellbeing at Gaelscoil Faithleann next Wednesday, October 5. On the night, Gaelscoil Faithleann Parents Council will host the renowned psychologist and psychotherapist Dr Fergus Heffernan for a talk on understanding the emotional well-being of children, teenagers and the family at 8pm. Dr Heffernan is a leading educator in the area of mental health and wellbeing of family and teenagers, and his presentation will look at why our children and teenagers do not have appeared to have developed resilience. Research has found that a quarter of second-level students in in Ireland self-harm and suffer anxiety disorders and this is now beginning to manifest in the primary school setting. Meanwhile, many young children are not learning relationship skills or empathy as they are only learning virtual relationships via screens. Mary Carroll, secretary of the parents council, said: “Dr Heffernan's talk is aimed at parents, guardians and people who play a key role in supporting the emotional wellbeing of teenagers and young children. It will take in how people can look after themselves in these challenging roles. "Dr Heffernan employs a wonderfully honest, heartfelt, practical and often times humorous approach to the subject of mental health and family issues. His listeners will be provided with plenty of material for ongoing reflection.” Everyone is welcome to attend, and there is no charge. Dr Fergus Heffernan.

Grace Notes Culture – not just for one night Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley highlights the importance of culture and the arts

I WAS honoured to have recently been asked to perform in St Mary's Church of Ireland, Killarney, as part of Culture Night 2016. Culture Night began in Dublin 10 years ago and now takes place across the country every year. It is night when we celebrate the best that Irish culture and heritage has to offer. I love that this night encompasses so many artistic disciplines; from singing to pottery; acting to literature. There certainly was something for everyone and I was lucky enough to perform alongside such exciting acts as Scotia Ensemble, Lorraine Nash and Sarah Finnan. What really struck me was the excitement and enthusiasm that surround-

ed this wonderful event. It really felt great that both locals and visitors came out to support the arts and we certainly received a very warm welcome from the audience in St Mary's Church. I think this excitement and enthusiasm needs to continue year round and I believe that the answer to promoting the arts in Killarney is simple. We need to have our own theatre in the town. Killarney is severely lacking in performance venues and spaces and for this reason I feel that the Aras Phádraig needs to be re-opened with its primary function being a theatre. I was very happy to read that the use of this building is now being re-

viewed and very much hope that those involved in the decision making process will take note of the fact that Killarney has a long tradition of cultural activities; Tops of The Town, Dóchas plays, music competitions and musicals. This tradition will die if our artists do not have anywhere to perform. It is as simple as that. We are a well known, successful tourist town and every year our tourists are treated to wonderful shows like 'Gaelic Roots', 'Celtic Steps' and 'The Spirit of Ireland'. Culture is not just for one night. Culture is not just for the summer season. Culture should be part of Killarney life year round. Us artists want a theatre; a home for our creativity. Without the support of our local town, our artists cannot thrive. Please, support the arts.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Life through the lens of the Gospels

LUKE 17:5-10: Faith can move mountains. Well, it can certainly get us moving. Recall a time when you were full of self-doubt, skepticism about a project, or lacking trust in God. What was that like? Contrast this with times when you believed in yourself, or in the value of a project you had undertaken, or when your faith and trust in God was strong. What kind of faith have you found that enriched your life? Faith is like a mustard seed: small; and sometimes we may be tempted to wait till our faith grows. Part of the message in the gospel is to use the faith we have, even though it may be small. That is how we grow in belief in ourselves and in God’s presence in our lives. Does your experience back up this? It is nice when what we do is recognised and acknowledged, but the desire for recognition leaves us vulnerable. It is not always forthcoming. It can be helpful if our main motivation in doing something is the value of the action itself. Have you experienced this? Love is a free gift. What is given lovingly is not given because of a claim. What is your experience of the freedom of love given and received? John Byrne, OSA, courtesy Veritas

MUSINGS

ANECDOTALLY, it is recounted that the Kerry man when asked at Slea Head for travel directions to Dublin, replied that if he were going, he would not begin from here at all. To tune into this Sunday’s Gospel, it is better to begin four verses before the given beginning. The disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith because of the intimidating challenge he had put to them. His instruction to forgive the repentant one seven times a day left them bewildered. Their request for more faith was very apposite. Forgiveness and faith are intertwining relationships. Faith is friendship with God. Sown in a receptive heart, it is nurtured through contact, experience, expression and tenderness. Sometimes damaged by failure, faith is restored and often enriched through genuine forgiveness. Forgiveness is the welcoming acceptance of the offending one back into a vibrant heart. It is a pure gift and can never be earned. To trade it, is to destroy it. It happens only between those who love. No wonder the disciples were gasping for an increase in such forgiving friendship and challenged by Jesus to protect it by fidelity. Described as mere servants, perhaps, but we are called to be the faithful custodians of a vibrant treasure.

THE DEEP END

Fr Tom Clancy

I USED to be a terrible worrier. You know the type. Somebody who actually worries about not worrying! I have improved hugely however. It would be hard not to as time, experience and faith have stood me well. Virtually all of the things I have ever worried about have never become a reality and for this I am grateful. Generally, I have always liked to believe I am quite rational, but the head and the heart can sometimes be at odds with one another, so when I was in my ‘worry maze’ the reasoning side of me always knew that my worries, in the main, were idle, but a tiny, annoying voice would say ’maybe this time’. That’s where wonderful friends come in. I am blessed to have lots of truly genuine people in my life who “tell it as it is”. A lovely friend of mine once berated me for “worry worming”. He was a man of faith, and during a telling off from him (a necessary one!) he said, “For God’s sake Sally, would you listen to yourself; you talk a lot about your faith but you are certainly not putting it into action. Absence of faith is fear and absence of fear is faith.” Take a minute to process this. Good isn’t it? That simple but hugely profound sentence has come to my rescue time and again and I would go so far as to say that it is the reason I don’t really worry any more.

The Provocateur RUDENESS SHOULD NOT BE REWARDED I AM SICK to the teeth of rude people who feel that aggression and their sheer sense of entitlement will get them everywhere. During the week I was queuing in a Killarney business. The staff were extremely busy as they processed everyone’s order and all customers were waiting their turn quite happily. As I waited, a man charged in, demanding to be served immediately. He simply couldn’t seem to understand why the under-pressure staff didn’t drop everything and jump to attention. Now I and several other people I know are familiar with this scenario in shops. Several people I know locally have been incensed over the years when sales assistants passed over them in the queue when similarly impatient customers arrived in, barely even demanding, but assuming aggressively, that they should be served first. Understandably, the sales assistant can feel himself or herself to be in a dilemma in such a situation and simply wants to deal with the difficult customer to ensure an “easy life” for everyone present. But it is extremely annoying when the aggressive and demanding customer is served first, simply to avoid confrontation and hassle, while the law-abiding queue sighs and looks on. However, on this particular day, the gentleman was told politely by staff that as there were three people ahead of him who had been waiting quite some time, he would be served in turn. The tirade he promptly unleashed showed how unacceptable he found this. I was shocked that he felt he was entitled not only to special treatment but also to shower verbal abuse on staff. But what left a sour taste was the fact that he simply could not accept he was being requested to wait in turn. Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + NOT FOR TURNING Lightning Strike IT SEEMS the Central Bank is digging its heels in and won’t be moved on changing the tough mortgaging rules. The Central Bank fears adjusting loan deposit rules could upset the financial markets. Last week, we made the suggestion that serious consideration should be given to easing the terms and conditions of those first-time buyers who have a good history of consistent payment of mortgage-sized rental over a number of years. It’s almost impossible for couples to save for a deposit on a new house while paying high rental as well. €400,000 would not be unusual for a family home in any of our cities. That would require a deposit of €58,000. How can any young couple be expected to raise that kind of money while paying rent in excess of €1,000 per month? According to the Central Bank adjusting the rules

in response to “temporary and minor fluctuations” in the housing market would be unwise. Is it not part of the problem, part of the housing crisis, that the inability of young people to secure housing finance is making things worse and less likely to be either temporary or minor? The fact that so many people are stuck in private rental accommodation is also causing a logjam in the rental sector and is putting pressure on the rental market because they are unable to move from rental to home ownership. I can understand the bank’s reluctance to change anything after the banking crisis we’ve had but it’s no good burying heads in the sand. We have a housing problem and it will take money to fix it. There are people out there who have the ability to pay so get off their backs. I would have liked to have heard something from our elected representatives.

HITTING THE HEADLINES AT HOME

Outcry of relocation fears at St Mary of the Angels FAMILIES of people with profound intellectual disabilities were left reeling as they were informed their loved ones are to be moved into houses scattered across towns and villages across the county, reports Dónal Nolan in The Kerryman this week. St John of God Community Services, which runs the St Mary of the Angels Centre in Beaufort, told The Kerryman that the plans are on foot of national policy to move residents

from “congregated: settings into “community” settings. Families, however, argue that St Mary of the Angels already represents a community setting and is calling on St John of God to redesignate the facility accordingly. They fear their children and siblings will be unable to adapt to the new circumstances of life in single houses, cut off from a facility they have called home for decades.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD THE TOY SMUGGLER GIRLS everywhere love Barbie and boys love footballs. It’s the same in Syria and Rami Adham knows exactly what brings the biggest smiles to the faces of Syrian children. The Finnish-Syrian father-of-six has become known as the “Aleppo toy smuggler”. He says the feeling of handing out toys to children living through a war that is older than many of them is “indescribable”. “The smile they give you back, the gratitude… you help them forget that they have lost their homes, their schools, their toys.” With over 28 visits to Syria from Helsinki in the past four years, he has honed the logistics of his operation. The Barbies are heavy - he says he crams at least 100 into his hand luggage. He also packs hundreds of soft toys, chosen because they pack down well into vacuum bags and do not break. After the flight from Finland to Turkey, he carries up to 70kg of toys on foot through the mountainous border region to cross into Syria, as the official border is closed to most traffic. Sometimes it takes 16 hours - other times he manages to arrange a shorter route. Rami helps provide food and other basic supplies, through the Finnish-Syrian Association, which he has founded to gather donations. He is also trying to build schools in refugee camps. But before his first trip, his three-

year-old daughter suggested taking toys too, and it is the children’s response that now keeps him going back. “That is this feeling that nourishes me, that charges my batteries,” he says. “These little heroes that represent Syria’s future are to me extremely valuable to preserve, to give them a moment out of the fear and instability,” he says. One six-year-old girl sticks in his mind. She did not talk at all. He was told she had watched as government forces raided her home, shut her father in a cupboard and set fire to it. They took her mother away too, noone knows where. “She screamed so much she lost her voice,” he says. He has visited her several times, and given her a Barbie and soft toy pony. “Her reaction is always the same, a beautiful smile.” Many others he meets have been orphaned by the war. “There’s no school, nothing for them to do, they are constantly barricaded in a couple of floors or underground,” he says. “The kids there are not afraid of death anymore. They wish to die instead of being injured - they say when you die you don’t have to worry anymore.” But he was unable to find a safe way into the besieged east of the city of Aleppo, the city where he grew up, which is usually central to his visits. But if he makes it back, “toys”, he says, “are the first thing on the list”.

Tributes paid to Israel’s Shimon Peres ISRAEL’S leaders have placed wreaths at the coffin of former Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres as his body lies in state outside parliament. A ceremony was held in silence for Mr Peres, who has died at the age of 93. Mr Peres was one of the last of a generation of politicians present at Israel’s birth in 1948. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role negotiating the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians a year earlier, a prize he shared with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Mr Peres had suffered a stroke two weeks ago and died on Wednesday in a hospital near Tel Aviv. He will receive a state burial at a ceremony today, Friday, at Mount Herzl Cemetery in Jerusalem.

Teenager kills father before opening fire in school A TEENAGER killed his father at their South Carolina home before going to a nearby primary school and opening fire with a handgun, wounding two pupils and a teacher. The youth, who is reported to be 14, gunned down his 47-year-old father, Jeffrey Osborne, at their home about two miles from the school. Then at about 1.45pm local time on Wednesday he shot one of the pupils in the leg and the other in the foot, before hitting a female teacher in the shoulder. “We are heartbroken about this senseless act of violence,” said Joanne Avery.

Hero’s welcome in Rathmore for All-Ireland winners

All-Ireland winning Kerry minor footballers Mark Ryan and Brian Friel (Rathmore) brought the Tommy Markham Cup back to Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra where they received a heroes' welcome. PICTURES: EAMONN KEOGH

THEY were the toast of the school as Brian Friel and Mark Ryan arrived at Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore on Friday holding the Tommy Markham Cup aloft. Applauded by the delighted pupils and staff, the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship-winning duo follow in the footsteps of former students Darren Brosnan and Shane Ryan, both having won All-Ireland medals with the Kerry minors, Darren in 2015 and Shane in 2016. Mark, who is a younger brother to Shane, comes from a proud footballing family. His sister Brid has won All-Ireland medals with Kerry at U14 and U16 level in both 2015 and 2016. Mark has now gone to study in college in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick. He achieved a great leaving cert despite the intense training. Whilst Brian is currently studying for his Leaving Cert and will still be committed to both the school football and the Kerry minors team. Both boys have achieved fantastic success in winning the Tommy Markham (three-in-a-row). Brian started playing Gaelic football with Rathmore GAA U8s. “That's where I learned most of my football skills. The best advice ever was ‘practise with both feet’,” he said. Both boys describe the hard work and dedication they put in since last November as worthwhile and extremely rewarding. “Their commitment, dedication, discipline, cooperation, and participation in school both academically and on the pitch shows that they are great ambassadors for their community and Rathmore club,” said school principal Denis Kerins, who added: “Congratulations to both and we look forward to seeing a lot more of both players on the pitch in the future.”

Property prices rise in Kerry THE price of the average three-bed semi in Kerry has risen 2.63% to €195,000 in the last three months, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide to the end of Q3 this week. “The supply of receivership properties has dropped away and the private vendor is almost non-existent with the exception of executor sales. If they do want to sell, vendors aren't realistic on the price,” said Eddie Barrett from REA North’s Tralee, who reported prices static in Q3 at €135,000. Meanwhile, in Killarney, prices have risen by €10,000 to €255,000 in the past three months, according to REA Coyne and Culloty. The average three bed semi nationally now costs €200,093, an increase of €4,732 (+2.42%) since the end of June. This is a rise of 6.37% against the same time last year. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide to the end of Q3 this week.Prices in Dublin city grew by +2.75% to €373,333 since June – almost twice the growth experienced in the same area in Q2 as buyers chase a scarce supply of suitable housing. Prices in the tier containing commuter counties and the main cities of Cork and Galway have risen by an average of just under €3,000 to €217,176 (+1.21%) while those in the rest of the country have increased by nearly €5,000 to €133,268 (+3.55%). “We are seeing little or no increase in supply nationally, with an increase in funded buyers fueling the market in the short-term,” said REA Chairman Michael O’Connor. “Many of our agents are now reporting some buyers are returning to the market having achieved a level of savings, and that there is an increase in mortgage-funded purchases. “The average amount of cash buyers has fallen by 3% to 33% nationwide, but in Dublin city that figure is down by 7% in three months, with 72% of transactions now mortgage-funded. “The early effects of the Central Bank restrictions had previously seen prices drop in the capital in the year to Q1 2016, but a combination of a longer time period to save and pressure on supply is manifesting itself in price growth. “Our agents are also reporting that many first-time buyers seem to be holding fire in the hope of increased incentives in the upcoming budget.”

CAREER OPTIONS

Making the most of college open days College open days are a great opportunity to get a good insight into what a college can offer, says career guidance counsellorr Eithne Teahan COLLEGE open days provide you with a chance to speak with lecturers, ask questions and to see for yourself what the college is like. By doing some preparation before you attend you will get the most out of the day which will benefit course and career decisions you will need to make later in the year. Many open days will be taking place over the coming weeks and months so, before you go, familiarise yourself with the courses available in the college. You can do this by gathering information from the college website or prospectus. Identify the courses you may be interested in as well as any sections of the course you particularly like or are unsure about, prepare questions and avail of the opportunity to put these questions directly to the course lecturers and to speak

with students who may already be taking that course. Finding out about job opportunities, further training as well as the career destinations of past students will also be valuable in helping you make informed career decisions. A lot of information including talks will be available on the day so make a note in advance of the ones you would like to attend and remember to take notes so you can look over them again closer to the application deadline. Being physically present on the campus you will get the opportunity to experience the atmosphere and explore lecture halls, libraries, sports complex and other student facilities. It can also be a chance to find out more about campus accommodation, clubs/societies, student services, scholarships and lots more. This will help give you a real sense of how one college compares with another.

2017 Volkswagen Electric e-Crafter delivery van AS PART of Volkswagen’s commitment to electric vehicles, the e-Crafter battery electric delivery van was introduced at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, Germany recently. The automaker said the electric version was planned early on in the Crafter’s development process and has the same dimensions as the new petrol and diesel models that launched this July. The near-production e-Crafter packs 312 lithium-ion cells hidden under the cargo floor, storing 43-kilowatt hours, which is enough to provide 208 km of driving range. Maximum cargo space matches the standard Crafter van at 333 cubic feet, and the electric version has a maximum payload of 3,767 pounds. Using a DC 40 kW fast charger, the battery can be topped up to 80% in just 45 minutes. The two vans are nearly identical, but the e-Crafter can be identified by a specific Relief Blue paint scheme, C-shaped LED daytime running lights up front and a handful of blue accents on both ends. Volkswagen notes the e-Crafter’s design is modular, and it will be able to receive next-generation battery packs for up to 400 km of driving range. Europeans won’t have long to wait for the emissions free van. Let’s not mention dieselgate. “The first e-Crafter vehicles will already be in customers’ hands by 2017,” said Volkswagen. 30.09.16 Killarney Advertiser

Top 10 car technologies you’ll see in the next 10 years WHILE flying cars are still the realm of Jetsons cartoons, the car of the future is just around the corner and will feature a range of new technologies to make driving safer, simpler and more efficient. Don’t just think self-driving cars, because these cars will be able to do a lot more than just drive for you.

Personal assistant Before you even leave the house your car will be monitoring traffic and weather conditions and will let you know if you need to plan to leave earlier. Pre-heat/pre-cool Already a feature on some electric cars, your car will heat or cool itself from the grid before you’re ready to leave, ensuring there’s plenty of charge in the vehicle battery. You’ll be able to engage the function from an app on your phone without the tedium of having to go into the garage yourself to switch it on.

Personal route assist Currently available on vehicles including the Audi Q7, A4 and A5, your car’s navigation system will learn your preferred route to frequent destinations and will make suggestions for the next trip, choosing from the three most likely destinations and picking the optimum route to avoid traffic.

Parking monitor Your car learns where you prefer to park, and once your destination is confirmed, it will calculate the probability that you’ll find a park in your favourite area.

Auto parking Once you arrive at your destination, your car will drive itself to an available car-parking place and message you on your smartphone to let you know its location.

Road sign and object recognition As car manufacturers prepare for the introduction of fully autonomous cars, they’re teaching cars to be able to read and recognise road signs so they can react accordingly.

Car-to-car communication Cars will be equipped with multiple sensors to monitor thousands of points of data which are shared to the cloud and, in turn, passed to vehicles in close proximity.

Traffic jam assist While traffic jam assist already exists on some vehicles, allowing the car to manage its own acceleration and braking within slow moving traffic, the next generation of car-to-car communication will see cars manage themselves in convoy.

Accident alert In the event that you are involved in an accident, your vehicle will alert emergency assistance teams and advise of your location.

Driving Style Assistant Your car will learn your driving style and will be able to set its driver assistance technologies to offset your style. If it senses you have a tendency to travel close to vehicles in front of you, it may prime its autonomous emergency braking system earlier.

PETS/ANIMALS ANIMALS HUG: Homes for Unwanted

Greyhounds (CHY 19414), formerly Kerry Greyhound Connection, takes in, rehabilitates and finds homes for unwanted racing greyhounds. We are looking for people to help us by offering a foster home for a greyhound as a ‘half-way-home’ until we can find a permanent home for the dog. Fostering is a really valuable and ‘hands on’ way to be involved in greyhound rescue work. There is no cost to fosterers as HUG will cover all food and veterinary expenses. Please get in touch if you’d like to help. For further details please contact us on 087 9822695 or email homesforunwantedgreyhounds@eircom.net. In loving memory of Mary O’Brien late of College Street, Killarney who died on the 29th September, 1994.

What I would not give to clasp her hand Her dear, sweet face to see; To hear her voice, to see her smile, That meant so much to me. You left behind an aching heart, That loved you most sincere, I never did, nor never will, Forget you, mother dear.

A gentle thought A silent prayer For someone special In God’s care.

So dearly loved and sadly missed by husband Sean, daughters Siobhán, Corrina, Mary Frances, Caroline and sons in law Eoghan, Peter, John and Justin.

Always remembered by your loving husband Jimmy and family.

6th anniversary O’Sullivan

9th anniversary Devane

Time passes, memories stay Quietly remembered everyday. Always in our thoughts Your loving family. Anniversary Mass in the Church of The Resurrection at 7.30pm on Saturday 1st of October.

7th anniversary O’Donnell

In loving memory of Denis O’Sullivan, late of 123 Ballyspillane, Killarney who died on October 6th 2010.

If we could have a lifetime wish and a dream that could come true, we would pray to God with all our hearts just to see and speak to you. A thousand words won’t bring you back, we know because we’ve tried and neither will a million tears, we know because we’ve cried. You left behind our broken hearts and precious memories too, but we never wanted memories Dad, we only wanted you. Always remembered by your loving family Eileen, Darren, Tracey, Johan, Annie and Edith.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. B.L.

In loving memory of Jeremy and Mary Joe O’Neill, late of 22 Muckross View, Killarney whose anniversaries occur on October 2 and August 19 Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect. Without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. There is absolute unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you. For an interval. Somewhere. Very near. Just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ. Loved and remembered every day by your family, Denis, Sinead, Sarah Jane and Mairtin, Orna, Sheá and Fiadh. Anniversary Mass for Jeremy and Mary Joe will be celebrated on Monday, October 3, at St Mary’s Cathedral, at 6.15pm.

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, Men’s Club DERMOT ROCHE WINS THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE SIXTH TIME Dermot Roche was playing in his eighth Club Championship final on Saturday the 24th of September, when he lined out against Ger Lenihan, and to whom he was giving 4 shots for their encounter. Ger won the 1st hole after Dermot visited the lake shore, but Dermot came right back with a birdie on the 2nd and a par on the 3rd to go one up, and he never looked like being overtaken after that and Dermot won the final by a comfortable margin of 4/3. This was Dermot’s sixth time winning the Club Championship, he won the Championship for the first time in 1984 when he overcame John O’Shea on that occasion, and his record is unequalled in this Championship. The new rowing season for 2016/17 is getting underway and last weekend we were delighted to welcome back a host of new rowers, who joined us for our Open Days held during September. Lots of promising rowing talent on show! Our beginner sessions for younger rowers aged 12 to 16 will continue every Sunday morning at the boathouse at 11:30am. In the event of very bad weather, we will relocate to the Muckross Community Centre. New members are always welcome and if you wish to try out the sport or just ask a few questions, why not call to the boathouse. Parents of younger rowers also most welcome. Existing members, adult and junior, will be starting back gradually for the new season over the weekends ahead. Watch your phone for details of training times. The club is already preparing for the first competition of the winter season, the Castleconnell Head Of the River on Saturday 29th October. Killarney Athletic

Denny Premier A Killarney Athletic 4-1 St Brendans Park The A’s took on The Park at home in their second league game of the season having already won the away fixture 2-1. With Conor Farrell and Shane Lynch missing Cillian Regan and Lukas stepped into the starting line up and both playing their hearts out. The park to their credit battled well for the first half but didn’t have the strength or experience in their very young side to compete with an athletic team that are growing in confidence with each game. Darren Mulcahy came on after

35 mins playing some good balls into the forwards and Lukas started the scoring with a great strike after good pressing from the whole team. Second half started with the boys turning up the pressure and Lukas getting his second and a wonderful solo goal by William Courtney from a tight angle made the game secure. Mark Griffin came on for Garry Moynihan and Mason Ferris on for Chris O Meara who had worked his socks off all game. Good work by Lukas setup Adam Moynihan to round off a great team performance. U17 Killarney Athletic AFC 0 Park 3 Athletic opened their league season with a loss , but the scoreline doesn’t do justice to the Athletic effort . Athletic made all the early chances but couldn’t find the net and were made pay when converting a penalty against the run of play .This seemed to shock Athletic for a while and went two down when the ball came off a post straight to a park player who finished from close in .Athletic were denied penalty shortly after this and were awarded one with five minutes to the break but the keeper made a fantastic save and park broke down field to score ,and what should have been 2 1 at halftime was 3 to 0 .Play was end to end in the second half but neither side could score again but not for the want of trying U12 National Cup Killarney Athletic 0-1 Johnstown (Navan)(AET) Athletic Under 12s came up against Johnstown from Navan in the last 32 of the National Cup on Saturday. This turned out to be a fantastic game with both defensive on top throughout. Athletic were very unlucky when after scoring a brilliant goal only to see it given as offside but unfortunately the referee didn’t see a defender standing 3-4 meters behind everyone else. 0-0 at full time the match could have gone any way. With 6 minutes left in extra time Johnstown scored the only goal of the game to go through. Heartache for our boys but they will come again. On the day Cian Lynch, Seán Dineen and Matthew Horgan were the best for Athletic with special mention to Stephen Moynihan filling in for Shay O Meara in goals. A great team effort and this team has all the ability to go further next year. Thanks too all the parents and the club for everything after the game. We wish Johnstown he best going forward. Football For All Blitz Killarney Celtic played host to a fantastic blitz with a host of teams from all over Munster. There were a load of games, loads of exciting action, a fabulous atmosphere helped by a fantastic co-operative spirit between players, coaches, officials, and most especially supporters. U15 National Cup: Killarney Celtic 4 St. Brendans Park 3 The all Kerry clash of Killarney Celtic and The Park turned out to be a cracker with Killarney Celtic coming back

killarney notes from 3-0 down to win 5-4. Goals from Mervyn Shalemba, Colin Walsh and Sean McGrath put the Tralee side in the driving seat after 15 minutes. Terry Sparling pulled a goal back before half time and early in the second half two Daniel Okute goals levelled matters. Shalemba scored his second to put the Park back in the lead but Jack O’Connor netted the equaliser, his debut goal for Celtic and a real beauty. With everything on the line, James Darmody nervelessly hit a stunning winner. U13 National Cup: Killarney 3 Lough Derg 4 Heartbreak in extra-time after an absolutely cracking game of soccer, really top drawer stuff from both sides. William Harry, Ceryson Dauter and Sean Fitzgerald got our goals and John Kelliher and Ryan O’Leary stood out in a great team display, but Lough Derg got the winner in the second half of extra-time. Crokes are second favourites to win out after reigning champions South Kerry, but they were beaten recently by Austin Stacks in the senior club final. In the event of South Kerry retaining their

Fossa Lotto Numbers drawn were 8, 19, 23, 24. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €10,350. Seniors The seniors had a great win over Firies in Listry on Saturday evening to win Div 2 of the East Kerry Superleague. Played in wet and tough underfoot conditions, they had a good second half to win on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-07. They play Scartaglin in Farrenfore next Sunday, 2nd October in the semifinal of the Junior Championship at 2.30 pm. Juvenile Football Fossa under 16 boys continued their winning ways with a 2-10 to 0-11 victory over Rathmore in the East Kerry Championship. They next play Dr Crokes in the Division 2 final in Fitzgerald Stadium on Tuesday evening. Fossa under 12 boys were away to Legion on Sunday in the East Kerry league. There was only one game which was unfortunate and because of this a few boys missed out. The game itself proved a great contest with Fossa going in at half time two points in front 0-11 to 2-3. There was some good scoring in the first half from Harry Kelly, Rian Colleran and Sam Buckley. In the second period the Fossa boys played much better with 1-02 from Sean Dineen and points from Harry Kelly, Darren Ryan, Patrick Lyons

county title Stacks will represent Kerry in the Munster club c ’ship. If Crokes want to play in Munster they have to win out the county c ‘ship starting with a victory tomorrow. They are a seasoned team under the tutelage of Pat O Shea and will be hopeful of beating O ‘Rahillys. They can call on Colm Cooper, Fionn Fitzgerald, John Payne and Johnny Buckley. They will be fancied to advance as will South Kerry who should overcome the Dingle opposition which include the Geaneys. Bryan Sheehan, Mark Griffin and Killian Young are key figures in the Iveragh side. On Sunday, Rathmore will carry in good form from the county league where they top division 2 and should have enough to hold off the Mid Kerry challenge. I fancy Kenmare to defeat Stacks, despite the fact that The Rockies are the county club champions after that one point win over Dr Crokes. Following their heavy defeat inflicted by Glenflesk in last Sunday’s O'Donoghue Cup match Kilcummin will find their relegation match very difficult. Milltown/ Castlemaine are fancied. All Ireland replay The eagerly awaited replay between Mayo and Dublin gets underway at 5.00 pm tomorrow in Croke Park. Did Mayo blow their chance in the drawn game and will Dublin ever again play so poorly? That is the issue uppermost in the minds of GAA folk. Remember Mayo had to put in a storming finish culminating in Cillian O Connor’s dramatic wonderful equalising point 7 minutes in to added and Ryan O’Leary. Dean Sheehan, Robert Brooks and Peadar Kelliher were very strong in defence. Fashion Show The Fashion show in aid of Fossa Community Centre will take place in the Hotel Europe on 12th October 2016 at 7.30pm. All support welcome. Fossa Notes If anybody has any item they would like included in the notes, please email information to John O’Neill at pro. fossa.kerry@gaa.ie. Please forward information before Sunday at 11am. Foss Youth Club will be starting back this October. A parent meeting will take place in Fossa Community Centre on Tuesday Oct 4th at 7.30 so that parents can register the young people, meet the leaders, sign up for parent rota and hear about plans for the year. There have been some changes brought in by KDYS this year in relation to youth clubs in Kerry so it is important for the parents to know as much as possible to ensure the safe, smooth running of the club. Leaders: Iseult Conlan, James Houlihan, Nuala Sweeney, Donal Horgan, Aimee Prendergast, Brid Kissane, Susan Forde.

Dr Crokes

Under 12 The U12 boys will finish their campaign on Sunday with a home game against

–on time. So often Mayo have been labelled chokers, but there was none of that in the drawn game. They took the initiative despite conceding 2 own goals to Dublin early on in the game. Which team will learn most from the drawn game? It should be Dublin even though their much vaunted forward division were well beaten by a Mayo team that was set up very defensively. This denied them punch up front where Aidan O'Shea, their big hope ,disappointed once more. He is a big man in their attack, but has not played well on the 4 big occasions for Mayo in recent years. The same could be said about Diarmuid Connolly on the Dublin side, but he had little chance to shine with Keegan stuck to him like a leech. In the drawn game I was most impressed by John Small and the consistent Brian Fenton on the Dublin team, while Donal Vaughan, back from injury was a stalwart for Mayo. He got best support from Keegan and team captain Cillian O'Connor. Mayo proved that Dublin are no world beaters and can be rattled by the intensity of opposition provided by Mayo and by Kerry in the semi-final. I expect Paddy Andrews to start tomorrow. He impressed when he came on versus Mayo. Dublin are tiring Dublin are on the road for four years now with the same starting 15 in most matches and there was an element of staleness in their play last time out. It will be a good test of Jim Gavin to raise the morale tomorrow. He was very clear in his post-match interview 2 weeks ago. He openly admitted that Dublin had played so badly that they did not deserve to win the All Ireland. Kenmare at 12 noon. The boys have played over 20 matches this year and all the players have improved their skills over the course of the season. Well done to coaches, parents and players for their dedication and support all year. Under 14 The U14’s finished off their season by winning the Plate in the Colm Cooper Blitz. It was a fantastic day and the young Crokes players got experience playing against clubs from outside the county again. It has been a long year and enjoyable year for this team and well done to the coaches, parents and players for their efforts over the course of the season. Colm Cooper Invitational Blitz Congratulations to the Dr Crokes Under 13 boys who won the Coffey Plate at the Colm Cooper Invitational Blitz. Kerry Minors A great night was had in the Clubhouse last Wednesday welcoming home our Kerry Minor heroes. Lotto Lotto results for Monday 19th of September - 5, 12, 20, 21. Jackpot €8700. Not won. Match 3 8 by €50. Draw Sunday 25th of September in Tatler Jack. Jackpot €9000 Results for Sunday 25th of September 3, 6, 8, 12. Jackpot €9000. Not won match 3 16 by €25. Next draw on Sunday 2nd of October in Tatler Jack. Jackpot €9300.

Stephen Rochford has it all to do again to prepare the Mayo team for a winning performance. The curse of the 50s is still there. He will probably go with the same team, hoping that the defence will not gift Dublin those 2 goals ever again, but the self-same defence played with such great intensity that success is within their grasp. What can Mayo learn from the drawn match? They will need to focus from the throw-in and furthermore they will need a big performance from Aidan O Shea. 31 counties will be shouting for Mayo tomorrow ,as they deserve some luck after all their disappointing days in Croke Park. Sentiment alone will not be enough. The heart says Mayo, of course, but the head still says Dublin. Here’s hoping for a great contest and the Sam Maguire to cross the Shannon. They may well need divine intervention fromm holy Knock. Ryder Cup The Ryder Cup is a very special event in the golfing calendar so the next few days should provide great viewing from Hazeltine National in Minnesota, where the USA will be hoping that home venue will prove decisive against the European side, managed by Darren Clarke. The USA have not won this prestigious event since 2008. Rory McIlroy got a great boost to his morale after winning the lucrative FedEx Cup at Atlanta on Sunday last. Europe has two young players in action, 22 year old star rookie Matthew Fitzpatrick and 24 year old Thomas Pieters. Mc Ilroy is just 27 but he has the experience of 3 caps in this competition. The oldest European player is 43 year old Lee Westwood with 9 caps just one less than Phil Mickleson (10 caps) who won his first USA cap in 1995. Their youngest player is the very talented Jordan Speight. The 23 year old has just the one cap. It promises to be riveting viewing for the next few days. It always is.
