Killarney Celtic
FINAL: FAI Women's U17 Cup Final - Bohemians Waterford 3 Killarney Celtic 2 (Maeve Courtney, Katie Doe). Despite a valiant attempt Killarney Celtic came up short against a fine Bohemians side in an entertaining final played in Turners Cross last Saturday. Bohs had the aid of the breeze and were the dominant attacking force in the early action with ever dangerous Sarah Abullo leading the line for Bohs. In the 37th min Abullo went clear of the defence but was denied by Lucy O'Connor. Bohs recovered the ball and went close from a header. Those let offs did not last long as Bohemians took the lead in the next play when a speculative shot from Emily O'Reilly ended up in the back of the net. Celtic were finding it hard to create clear cut chances and Bohemians continued to force the pace with Abullo causing problems with her pace and control. On 55 mins Abullo cut through the Celtic defence and finished with aplomb to give Bohemians a 2-goal cushion. Celtic were back in the game on 69 mins when Maeve Courtney scored a spectacular goal from outside the box. Grainne Kennedy, Maeve Courtney and Katie Doe gave the Bohs defence anxious moments before Bohemians struck again from a corner when Celtic failed to clear their line. Celtic refused to give up and in the 84th min Katie Doe scored direct from a free kick to ensure a pulsating final period which included 12 mins of injury time. However try as they might Celtic could not find an equaliser and the cup went to Waterford. Many thanks to our players who gave a wholehearted display right to the final whistle and were a credit to the club. Many thanks to our coaches, Alan, David and Tanya. Many thanks to the great support on the day in Turners Cross.
Killarney Legion GAA
INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Our Senior Men made a winning start to Intermediate group stages with a 1-20 to 0-8 win over Currow in Farranfore last Sunday. The game was a slow burner with it really only opening up in the final quarter when a Will Shine goal put the gloss on the score line. A cagey first half saw the teams retire to the dressing rooms on double scores, 0-8 to 0-4. Peter McCarthy alongside Will, was scorer in chief with three points in the opening half, Eoghan O’Sullivan and Ryan O’Grady also getting in on the act. Currow struck for the opening point of the second half, but it was only a signal for our lads to take control with Jamie Alade and substitute James O’Donoghue amongst the scorers. Danny Sheahan stole forward from full back to slot over as did Shaun Keane who made a productive appearance in the second half. The scoring was completed by Cian Gammell and Thomas Moriarty alongside regular contributors Peter Mc and Shine. Tougher tests lie in wait, starting with the visit of Laune Rangers to Direen, this
Sunday at 2pm, in Round 2 with the final round involving an arduous trek to Kilcummin.
KERRY LADIES: Commiserations to the Ladies team who went down to Dublin in the TG4 All Ireland Championship final in Croke Park on Sunday. Never really getting a handle on the game they fought valiantly till the end. A bus from the club made the trip and aside from the obvious disappointment at the result a good trip was had by all.
CLUB SUMMER CAMP: The Club Summer Camp 2023 was held last week and for a change this summer the weather co-operated for a feast of fun at Direen. TERENCE CASEY: We would like to acknowledge the passing of one of our honorary members and a fantastic friend to the fishing community in Killarney for decades - Terence Casey passed on to his eternal reward on Monday 07th of August. We were very honoured to count Terence as a member and advisor for many years and he imparted his wisdom on matter pertaining to fishing for the betterment of anglers in the present gen- eration and generations to come. A good world needs knowledge, kindness and courage and Terence personified this. He was very proud of Killarney, the National Park, the lakes and the ties it all had to the people. He gave most willingly of his time and boundless knowledge when it came to ensuring that generations to come would enjoy the bounty of the lakes and the park, just as his own generation had the pleasure of doing and he had the faculty of instilling the same responsibility in people of the need to protect and cherish our very beautiful surrounds. At this sad time, we would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to Terence's wife Geraldine, his children Niamh and Terry, His brother Owen and family and to the wider Casey and O'Connor Families and remind them all of the rich legacy that Terence has left us all. Gone but not forgotten, May He Rest In Peace. On the very waters that Terence cherished so much, as the days have had a slight autumnal touch about them, we have slipped back into the cycle of competition times again - our next club outing will be on Lough Lein on Sunday 27th of August as we fish for the Church Island Cup. We look forward to meeting up with members then and entries now being taken to any club officer.
Muckross Rowing Club
REGATTA UPDATES: It was a busy weekend for the club in Bantry last weekend, with Bantry RC hosting a double header of coastal racing events. On Saturday, the inaugural Irish Junior Coastal Championships were held. This was the first time that a dedicated Championships regatta for junior rowers was staged in the offshore or coastal branch of the sport. This is another encouraging sign for the development of coastal rowing in Ireland (also known as offshore rowing), which is going from strength to strength ahead of its Olympic debut in 2028. Our congratulations go to the two Muckross crews who became the first winners of coastal championship titles for the club. The Men’s J16 Quad of Max Coyne, Senan Kennedy, Gearoid O’Connor and Jack Murphy were among the gold medals. So too was the Men’s J18 Double crew of Ian Coffey and Daniel Daly, with Gearoid O’Connor and Diarmuid O’Connor also third in the same category. Max and Jack were silver medallists also in the Men’s J16 Double while the Men’s J14 Quad were third. Outside of the junior contest, Bantry Regatta was also run over both Saturday and Sunday. Congratulations to our winning Men’s Open Quad crew of Ethan O’Neill, Patrick Buckley, Brendan O’Neill and Paul Griffin.
