Community Mourns Following Tragic Loss Of Cyclist KILLARNEY has been numbed with shock this week following the tragic accident that claimed the life of a local cyclist on Wednesday evening. While the circumstances of the accident are still being investigated, the fact that this road is an accident black spot is something
that has dismayed road users in Killarney for many years. Gardaí, politicians and numerous community groups and individuals have flagged the bypass, in particular the area near the two junctions, as extremely hazardous. It is a route that road users, from
pedestrians to motorists to cyclists, face with trepidation every day. There have been several fatalities on the section of road where the incident occurred, between two link roads a short distance apart on opposite sides of the N22 Cork to Tralee bypass.
Roll Up For St Brendan’s Fayre Day
Killarney Gardaí Appeal For Witnesses To Fatal Collision GARDAÍ in Killarney are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the Killarney bypass on Wednesday. At approximately 7pm, a cyclist in her 40s was in collision with a tractor which was towing agricultural equipment on the bypass (N22). The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor was uninjured but was reported to be very shocked. Emergency services rushed to the location, close to the turn-off to Kilcummin, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed to traffic and local diversions were in place while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene and the
local coroner, Terence Casey, was notified. The bypass was closed overnight. The cyclist was named locally as Annette Mannix, of St Brendan’s Place, Killarney. Ms Mannix, who was reported to have been a carer for her mother, had been cycling with a group when the accident occurred. The
tractor stopped immediately. Gardaí in Killarney have several times raised the collision black spot with road authorities and the section has been highlighted at council meetings by local councillors and other politicians as well as individuals, residents and sports clubs. “We are appealing for witnesses,” said Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí. “The bypass is a very busy road and anyone who has any information in relation to the matter should get in touch.” You can contact Killarney Garda Station 064-667 1160 or 0646631222, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

Retention And Extension Of Killarney National Park Biosphere Sought THE retention of the existing Killarney National Park Biosphere Reserve and an extension to new areas surrounding the existing reserve is be considered and adjudicated upon by UNESCO in the coming weeks. The request for the retention and extension will be submitted this week to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) by Kerry County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The designation is being sought in recognition of the area’s unique ecological and cultural heritage and a commitment to sustainable development. Biosphere reserves are renowned as areas that demonstrate a bal-
anced relationship between people and nature. Killarney National Park was awarded UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in the early 1980s due to the rare habitats and valuable wildlife found within the park. To satisfy updated UNESCO criteria, it is proposed to extend the biosphere boundary to include areas of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountains and Lough Leane catchment. The newly defined biosphere reserve will be known as the Kerry Biosphere Reserve. New zones are proposed within the new Kerry Biosphere Reserve. The core area of the reserve will remain largely the same as the existing biosphere reserve. It includes State-owned lands dedicated to
long-term conservation within Killarney National Park and the Eirk Bog Nature Reserve. The newly proposed biosphere reserve straddles the Municipal Districts of Killarney and South and West Kerry. Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin said: “There are no statutory implications is this designation comes into effect and communities within the new biosphere boundary will not be subject to any additional planning restrictions or limitations. Similar to Tidy Towns and Blue Flag awards, this award is an incredible opportunity to showcase the greater Killarney area and Kerry as an exceptional area for nature, culture and sustainable development.”
THE St Brendan’s College Fayre Day takes place next Sunday, May 21. Enjoy the fun in the “Sem Field” beside St Mary’s Cathedral on Port Road, from 1pm to 4pm. Fun for all the family is promised with stalls, homebaking, gourmet burgers and tea/coffee available. Not only that but you will get to groove to the beat of live music throughout the afternoon. Expect a jam-packed programme of sporting events and games for all ages.
Further Honours For Fr Shay Cullen JUST a short few months after Fr Shay Cullen was honoured with the 2016 Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award in Killarney, he has received two further international humanitarian awards – one from Germany and one from the Netherlands. Fr Shay, who established the Preda Foundation in the Philippines in 1975, accepted the Shalom Award for Human Rights Defenders from Ulrike Schurr, chairperson of the Justice and Peace group of the Catholic University Eichstaett-Ingolstadt. The conferring ceremony was held on Saturday in the university and was attended by the leading civic and church personalities and the representative of the president of the university. In The Netherlands, it has been announced that Irish Columban missionary is to be the recipient of the 2017 Martin Buber Award in recognition of his internationally acclaimed work on human rights. During an upcoming short visit to Ireland, Fr Cullen will address TDs and Senators in Leinster House on May 17. Inset: Fr Shay Cullen.

‘I Owe My Life To Kerry Mountain Rescue Team’ FRIENDS of a Killarney man who was seriously injured on Carrantuohill last July are organising an 8km charity walk in aid of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT). James, from Ballycasheen, was brought to safety after being seriously injured on the mountain. The father-of-two, who is still recovering from his injuries, had initially been paralysed from the shoulder down as a result of damaged vertebrae in his neck. But following long months of medical treatment and difficult rehabilitation, he is making good progress and walking again with assistance. James had been hillwalking with his friend, Councillor John Joe Culloty, on the morning of Sunday July 10, 2016, when he slipped, lost control and fell 40ft over a ledge. He sustained extensive injuries to his face, which required 100 stitches, and right side of his body. The pair had been descending from Carrantuohill and the accident occurred at a location known as the Zig Zags (Bothar

na Gíge), above the Hag’s Glen. Conditions on the mountain were poor, with heavy rain and strong winds. After treating James for his injuries at the scene, KMRT members lowered him by stretcher to Ard na Locha from where he
was transferred to University Hospital Kerry by Rescue 115 Coastguard helicopter. A total of 15 KMRT personnel were involved in the call-out. “Basically, I owe my life to the rescue team. Only for
them, I might not have survived,” said James. He underwent surgery at the Mater Hospital, Dublin, and afterwards spent four months at the National Rehabilitation Centre, Dun Laoghaire. The determined HSE official, who came out of hospital in a wheelchair, but has not used it, also thanked all those who have been treating him. “I’m walking with difficulty and the challenge is to improve on that. I must start learning to do everything again,” he said. The walk takes place on Saturday, June 10, departing from Muckross Garden Restaurant, Muckross House. Registration is from 10am-11am. Donations will be welcomed on the day. Killarney Racecourse Gallops Into The Limelight EXCITING plans to enhance facilities at Killarney Racecourse and foster stronger bonds with the local business community are priorities for the new chairman of Killarney Race Company, Gerard Coughlan. The former senior manager with Kerry Group has taken over at the helm from auctioneer John Buckley, in time for the three-day May racing festival which will come under starter’s orders this Sunday. A new, state-of-the-art 54-unit stable yard will be officially unveiled by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, prior to the first race. Built at a cost of €350,000, the American barn style development is in addition to the recently upgraded existing stables. Mr Coughlan said his main aim as chairman will be to work more closely with the local business community. “The races have a great deal to contribute to Killarney with the three annual festivals bringing 80 races over a total of 11
days. The conservative estimate is that the races are worth in the region of €6.2 million to Killarney with an additional €1.42 million in prize money,” he said. “My aim is to secure extra racing for the town, whether it’s by adding on days to the three festivals we have already or opting for a new stand-alone festival. There might be some merit, for example, in adding a fifth day to the four-day July festival or maybe introducing a new meeting in October.” He believes Killarney Races can be developed along the lines of the hugely successful Galway Festival of Racing as the infrastructure is already in place. Mr Coughlan is acutely aware that the facilities offer great scope for attracting non-racing events to the town. “As it is we are just tipping the iceberg and the intention is to make full use of our extensive facilities to attract more people to Killarney,” Mr Coughlan said. He succeeds John Buckley who has stepped down as chairman after a successful 13-year term and he is joined

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column
Biosphere Issue How Criticism Is Often No Bad Thing
years. But how would anyone have known when the National Parks and Wildlife Service, which is governed by the same outside-the-Pale Department, never lodged its required regular reviews? And UNESCO never asked for them. It simply ignored Killarney and let the rhododendron grow in the valleys as far as Glencar. Anyway, the biosphere is now to stretch from the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to the Castlemaine Harbour to Scartaglin. And it will no longer be called the UNESCO Killarney Biosphere Reserve. It is to be known as the Kerry Biosphere Reserve! Hello? Is anyone objecting to this loss of status for Killarney? It is one thing to get a slap across the knuckles, but it is another to be gutted of your entire core. Especially as the core area, and the very raison d’être for the UNESCO accolade in the first place in 1982, is still Killarney and its wondrous national park. I would like to know who proposed this name change? And I would like to know who agreed to it? Kerry County Council and the NPWS are partners in the plans for the newly named Kerry biosphere area, made up of core, transition and buffer zone. I would like to know why it is no councillor and no public representative has yet come forward and criticised the wholly unnecessary, and actually inaccurate name change. Inaccurate, because if you look at the socalled Kerry biosphere map which they have published – the proposed biosphere
ANYWAY, sticking with the environment for a moment: Padraic Fogarty has written a worthwhile book – half of the proceeds are going to the Irish Wildlife Trust- called “Whittled Away: Ireland’s Vanishing Nature”. It is published by Collins Press in Cork. He traces the decline of the environment – a bit like the pivotal Silent Spring of Rachel Carson – but it’s not so much pollution as downright bad management when it comes to Killarney. The forests are being literally “munched away”. Padraic writes movingly: “In Killarney what was once a finely balanced ecosystem has been tipped over and the pieces have spilled onto the floor. The crenulated bark of the ancient trees gives the illusion of stability but the ecosystem for he Killarney forests is lurching this way and that, albeit at timescale unobservable to the human eye. If we want this magical place to retain its allure, it can only be with the active and constant intervention of people,” he writes. Either bring back the wolves or manage the thing. Of course the strategy has been since the English left, just leave it to itself!! The second thing is the rhododendron a family of plants related to heather and he details the efforts to control it and the falling out between Groundwork and the park staff which has seen Groundwork depart and 20 years of work undone. The outstanding Killarney has never been outstandingly managed and there has been huge deterioration even since 2005, Padraic details. It is sobering reading.
reserve is not centred on Kerry, it is centred on Killarney and the Lough Leane catchment area. So has Killarney lost all courage with the loss of our town council and is anyone to come out with guns blaring? Let’s not be afraid to state it, Killarney as a label is far classier and more prestigious than Kerry,
“
Humanity would never have evolved if it refused to hear the steps of the approaching dinosaur
“
THE criticism of how the Killarney National Park has been allowed to degrade, in every way, lodged by the Irish Wildlife Trust to the Paris-based office of UNESCO, the UN organisation governing 600 biosphere reserves worldwide, would seem to have borne fruit locally – so going to show that criticism is often no bad thing. For sure, looking too much into the abyss, or the black side, can make monsters of all of us, but uncritically making light out of everything and demanding positivity, and closing the eyes and ears, is no way forward. Humanity would never have evolved if it simply sat gazing at the stars with a stupid smile, and refused to hear the steps of the approaching dinosaur coming down the valley, or hear the sad story by the fireside. But back to the biosphere! And I do sometimes wonder if all this environmental and green thinking, fan as I am of much of it, is just a replacement of the kind of knots medieval theology used to twist itself into. Seven hundred and more years ago there was constant debate about the number of angels sitting on a pinhead, and the number of spheres in the Heavens. (I must get Danny Healy-Rae’s erudite opinion!). Killarney’s heartland 25,000 acres of woodland mountain and bog and valley and forest is no longer enough to retain its 1982 designation as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the Department for everything outside the Pale has said. And this has been the case for the past six
New Book
known mostly for its thick butter (and unfortunately for the many refined Kerry men) for it’s the alpha male prowess. There are other serious issues: this newish biosphere while having great potential is not all the best possible thing in the best possible world, as the council’s clever press release would have you think. For a start there is a lack of consultation. And Flor McCarthy, the IFA’s hill representative who’s Black Valley Farm is to be included in this new biosphere, said he was
never consulted, no one in the IFA was approached, and farmers have enough designations to contend with already. Quite sensibly, he said the deer issue, where herds of protected deer are roaming onto roads and eating farmers out of grass, needs to be addressed alongside the rhododendron problem which is encroaching everywhere, and this before any more designations are slapped on them. In fact, farmers are pro-tourism but there needs to be common sense, is what Flor says. Last but not least, there is the Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT), singing from the same hymn sheet as the upland farmers, it would seem. Padraic Fogarty, ecologist and volunteer development officer with the IWT, says the new proposals could be a template for hill management and sustainable living for the rest of the county. But he is deeply worried about the lack of proper answers to outstanding issues like hill burning on Mangerton, over-population of deer, lack of regeneration of the woodlands, grazing by sheep and so on and so on and so on. All the NPWS seems to have done is hand the thing over to Galway-based consultants and issued a map. There needs to be more than that, Padraic thinks. I think so too. Padraic thinks funding streams for environmental projects and research in the Killarney National Park from such as the European LIFE scheme could be accessed. Perhaps I still think a local tourist tax is needed. That way we would value it more.

THE Killarney Bar Association hosted a banquet in the Killarney Plaza Hotel last Friday evening in honour of its distinguished guests Judge Bryan McMahon and his wife, Mary. Judge McMahon is a retired High Court Judge and former University Professor and Head of the Law Faculty, University College Cork. “It a testament to his ability and personality that many of his former students attended the banquet and regaled the company with very fond and
amusing memories of their days in UCC,” sad Killarney Bar Association chairman Pat F O’Connor. Judge McMahon was chairman of the Board of the Abbey Theatre for 11 years and, of course, is a son of the celebrated poet and playwright of the same name, Bryan McMahon, “The Master”. A native of Listowel, his brother Gary was a former Kerry All Ireland-winning footballer and holds the record for the fastest goal ever scored in an All Ireland Final.
In his post-dinner address to the gathering Judge McMahon recited Bernard O’Donoghue’s poem “The Munster Final”. His sporting connections are not limited to GAA as his wife Mary is a sister of Northern Ireland soccer legend and current Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill. Now retired, Bryan presides at Irish Citizenship Ceremonies reflecting his continuing interest in national and commu-
nity affairs. The McMahons have strong local ties with Killarney as their daughter Allanore is married to Killarney physiotherapist Colm Fuller and Bryan’s brother, Jim, resides in Mill Road and is a member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. The banquet also marked the retirement of local solicitor Maura O’Shea and the departure of the Killarney Bar Association’s outgoing secretary Jane O’Halloran who has moved to Dublin.

Participants were gathering on the fairways of Mahony’s Point from first light for the two days of the event. John Bowler, captain of the Centra The Reeks/Four Star Pizza team, was presented with first prize by Tomas Kelliher at the prize-giving in Scotts Hotel. “The response to the golf classic surpassed our expectations, it was absolutely phenomenal,” Vincent Casey said on behalf of the organisers. “Nearly 400 teams signed up for the event, it was just choc-a-bloc.” A walk also took place, commencing from the entrance to the golf club. CONGRATULATIONS to Killarney native Mary O’Sullivan who won the No Name! Club National Host and Hostess of the Year 2017 at the weekend. Maria Walsh, MC for the black-tie function, at the Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny, interviewed the finalists on stage in front of an audience of over a thousand people. Mary, representing the Killarney No Name Club, is a Leaving Certificate student at Coláiste Ghobnatan in Ballyvourney. She plays football with her local club Glenflesk and plays basketball with her school. Mary has a keen interest in music and sings with her local youth choir. Celtic Steps Keeps On Dancing
Superb Achievement By The Glenflesk’s All-Ireland Champions
Sport WELL done to the talented under-13 Glenflesk Futsal team of Callum Cronin, Luke Crowley, Gearoid Healy, Eoghan Kelly, Evan Lucey, Dara O’Connell, Ignatius O’Leary and Big Ben Switzer who won gold at the Community Games national finals. The final was a tight high quality game but our boys showed their trademark skill and determination to
emerge winners on a 1-0 scoreline. Well done to the boys who all made big contributions. Thanks also to mentors Donal Kelly, James Furlong, Kenny Cronin and to the parents and supporters who travelled to Dublin today to support the team. It was a memorable day all round for Glenflesk Community Games at the national finals in Dublin on Saturday with medals for Oran Horgan
(Loughquittane) who won a silver in Judo, Kathryn Ryan (Shronedraugh) who won bronze with the Kerry cross-country relay team. The team defeated a strong Monaghan team (Magheracloone) in the semi-final by a single goal, 1-0, and repeated the feat in the final against a very classy team from Kildare (St Bridgid’s) again by a single goal.

News Briefs ... Seeing Stars In South Kerry
Rafael Kicks Into Action In Killarney Eve Kelliher gets an insight into street football from a world-leading player HIS passion for street football has seen Rafael Spajic sweep his way across the globe. In Killarney this week, the Croatian sports star was keen to share his expertise with local youngsters. The professional street football player and coach has played and taught in more than 20 countries worldwide, winning third place in the Street football World Cup and European Cup. “Through my
love of street football I have built a community of more than 45,000 followers on different social media profiles,” said Rafael. The terms street football and street soccer (in the United States) encompass a number of informal varieties of association football. Rafael spent his early years in Zurich in Switzerland and later moved to Djakovo in Croatia which is where he discovered a flair for
street football. “There was a concrete court close to my house and I would play there, as did a lot of kids,” he said. The self-taught star soon found himself competing in prestigious tournaments in cities across the world. Rafael has been sponsored by Nike and worked with the Qatar and Croatian football associations. See more about Rafael on instagram.com/rafaelspajic

STARGAZING is becoming an increasingly popular pastime and astro-tourism is a growing niche area within international tourism. This affords Kerry a great opportunity to attract new visitors, especially over the winter months. The Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve in South Kerry is one of only three designated gold-tier dark sky reserves on the planet. Due to a lack of light pollution in the Reserve, an amazing number of stars are visible to the naked eye - up to 6,000 on a clear night. The Tourism Unit of Kerry County Council and the Destination Kerry Tourism Forum, together with The Skellig Centre for Research and Innovation, and University College Cork are running “An Introduction to Astronomy” weekend course in The Royal Hotel, Valentia Island, on May 12 and 13. This UCC-accredited course will provide a basic introduction to astronomy and explore the connection between archaeology and astronomy, as well as, night sky observation (weather permitting). The course will be delivered by Professor Paul Callanan, UCC and Dr Michael Connolly, County Archaeologist. There is limited availability, so if interested, log on to www.ucc.ie/en/acead1050/ to reserve a place on the course.
Putting The Kettle On For A Good Cause
Words: Eve Kelliher
WHEN local man Eugene Tangney happened upon a Storm Trooper in full regalia while climbing the Devil’s Ladder on Carrantuohill on Tuesday, he could have been excused for thinking the Star Wars character had taken a wrong turning on his way to the Skelligs. The actors and crew involved in the movies have spoken of how they feel right at home in Kerry following the filming of the movies here in recent years but Ashley Broomhall had donned the iconic costume to climb Ireland’s highest mountain as part of a charity challenge. The 28-year-old, from Shropshire, has previously scaled Britain’s highest peaks, to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Lingen Davies Cancer Relief Fund. His mother Janet has had treatment for cancer and his aunt Sue Toms, of Cornwall, is about to have an operation for breast cancer.
THE clients of the Kerry Parents & Friends community programme have decided to organise a coffee morning in aid o the Kerry Cork Health Link bus. Keen to help the people who avail of the bus that brings Kerry patients to Cork for vital cancer treatment, the team will be presenting the fundraiser on Wednesday, May 17, between 11am and 12.30pm in the Aras Phádraig.
Enda Kenny Warns EPP Of Brexit Threat To NI Peace Process “WE CANNOT have a border like we had before,” Taoiseach Enda Kenny has warned delegates at the meeting of the European People’s Party in Druids Glen. At the meeting in Co Wicklow, Mr Kenny reminded the attendees that with the Irish Border came “sectarianism” and “30 years of violence”. This, he said, “was the one point you should understand here”. He praised the EPP delegation for visiting the Border
area on Wednesday, and repeatedly assured them that Ireland remained “at the heart of Europe”. The EPP, of which Fine Gael is a member, is the largest group in the European Parliament and is holding its Bureau meeting in the Co Wicklow hotel. Killarney-based MEP Sean Kelly, the leader of the Fine Gael MEPs, said Mr Kenny was “a hero of the EPP”. He said Mr Kenny had promised him that he would not step down until after the EPP meeting in Wicklow, and “he was as good as his word”.

Makeup Artist To The Stars Takes Centre Stage In Killarney STYLE and beauty were the order of the evening for Spa at the Killarney Plaza Hotels beauty event last weekend. Guests were treated to beauty makeup demonstrations by the internationally acclaimed Paula Callan followed by skincare demonstrations for the ever-popular Decleor & Carita product and therapy range on offer at Spa at the Killarney Plaza. “Last weekend Paula celebrated her first year anniversary for Callan & Co Salon based in Ballsbridge, Dublin, so we are extremely grateful to her for taking the time to have demonstrated at our Beauty Event,” said Monika Gedviliene, spa manager. “Such is the interest that Spa at the Killarney Plaza Hotel has received for these evening events, they are now almost booked before any real promotion starts.” On this note Monika strongly suggests anyone who wishes to be the “first to know” about such future events, should simply
email spa@killarneyplaza.com.” After the demonstrations, guests were invited to engage with Spa at the Killarney Plaza’s team of dedicated skincare experts. Guests got to experience first-hand some of the innovative and results-led therapies available at the Spa. This aspect of the evening was incredibly well received with a number of the products that Paula Callan demonstrated actually selling out! But fear not Monika has confirmed that these have being reordered and will be back in stock from today. “Thanks to Paula’s demonstration we actually sold out of Aromessence Neroli Night Balm, ideal hydrating skin and our Aroma Solutions Anti-Fatigue Eye Serum, ideal for those who seek to reduce the appearance of tiredness, it was great.” The after party in the Plaza Bar continued into the small hours. 1. One of your key employees or shareholders became seriously ill or died suddenly? 2. Your business partner died? 3. You died? If any of the above questions are a cause for concern then maybe you need business protection. IT WON’T HAPPEN TO OUR COMPANY! The odds of one partner in a 2 or 3 man business dying or becoming seriously ill before retirement are probably a lot higher than you might think. WHAT’S THE SOLUTION? Arranging adequate business protection insurance is the only way to ensure that the necessary funds will end up in the right hands at the right time, in a cost efficient manner, to ensure the continuity and the survival of the business.
KEYPERSON COVER This allows a limited company to plan for the potential financial loss that it would suffer on the death or serious illness of a key employee. PERSONAL SHAREHOLDER PROTECTION This allows the shareholders of a limited company to provide funds to purchase the share of a deceased shareholder from their personal representatives. CORPORATE SHAREHOLDER PROTECTION This is an arrangement whereby the company agrees with each shareholder to buy back his / her shares from his / her personal representatives on death, with the insurance cost being borne by the company. GIFT OR INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING This allows you to plan in advance for any tax liability which could arise on the transfer of a business, thus ensuring the business won’t have to be sold off to pay the tax debts.
_________IMPORTANT QUESTIONS _________
· Will I be able to pass my business on to my children intact without it being ravaged by tax? · How will my family survive financially in the event of my sudden death? · How would the business survive in the event of my sudden death or the death of a partner? · What would happen to my income in the event of a long-term absence from work due to illness?

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Passenger Number Take-Off At Kerry Airport Is Good News For Killarney Comment
Words: Eve Kelliher
NEWS that passenger numbers have soared by 6% at Kerry Airport this year, with some 325,670 commuters surging across the Farranfore tarmac in 2016, is music to the ears of the tourism and business community of Killarney. Kerry Airport is “a key asset to the county” in the words of Conor Hennigan, development manager with Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, so it’s good to see that passenger numbers on its routes are on the increase. The annual report and accounts released by the airport on Tuesday showed growth on the Dublin route
of 10%, with passengers up from 67% to 73%, while the London and Frankfurt-Hahn routes are up by 9% and the sun flights running at passenger load factors (PLFs) of +90% for the period. The figures relate to the 12-month period ending on December 31, 2016, and report an operating profit after taxation for the period of €287,613. This is an increase on operating profit which was €30,980 in the previous year. Turnover rose from €5.8m to €6m. Meanwhile, new for 2017 is the Kerry-Berlin flight, starting on November 2. While we’re not yet back to the fig-
Trump ‘Essentially Declared War’ By Firing James Comey THE fallout from FBI director James Comey’s dismissal appears to be just getting started. Multiple news outlets on Wednesday night began detailing the months, weeks, and days leading up to President Donald Trump’s bombshell decision to kick Comey out of the bureau. The action has already produced shockwaves worldwide but, as told by a number of US officials, the worst may be yet to come. Reaction from Justice Department and FBI officials ranged from “raw anger” to fear, according to The Washington Post. Trump “essentially declared war on a lot of people at the FBI,” said one official cited by the newspaper.
ures of pre-recession times, I would agree with the Killarney Chamber development manager’s verdict that the number of passengers last year was “phenomenal”. Killarney and Kerry are benefiting in particular from the German market, he noted. “This is one of the more lucrative, higher-spend markets. It is a very positive development for Kerry and the whole Southwest region,” said Mr Hennigan. “Even walking through the Gap of Dunloe on Sunday, I met five or six German visitors within the space of an hour and a half.” As well as boosting tourism, the
German link is also hugely beneficial when it comes to the hospitality industry, he added. “From an employer’s perspective, the German hospitality industry is very much career focused. I think there are opportunities for the tourism industry here to attract a workforce that is badly needed. Hotels such as the Hotel Europe have a very strong tradition of bringing German catering staff to this part of the world.” The Kerry Airport plc annual general meeting will be held at the Earl of Desmond Hotel, Killarney Road, Tralee, County Kerry on Thursday, June 1, at 12 noon.
Michael Fassbender Reminisces About Breakdancing In Fossa
KILLARNEY sat up and took notice when Michael Fassbender spoke last week of how breakdancing made it to Fossa in the 1980s. The Hollywood A-lister frequently turns the spotlight on his hometown and indeed his performance on The Graham Norton Show was a big talking point in town
the following day. The Alien: Covenant star, after persuasion from coguest Jessica Chastain, removed his mic and suit jacket as Norton had the emcee turn on some Gary Newman and disco lights. The Hollywood star then proceeded to perform an impressive “flip swan dive” onto the floor, where he went straight into an extremely accomplished rendition of the worm. The dance came after Norton brought up Fassbender’s apparent desire that his “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” character David, a synthetic android, enact a “Napoleon Dynamite”-esque dance routine at the end of the film as the credits rolled. Cue a request from Jessica Chastain that Fassbender give a demonstration of what breakdancing was.

Stephen Fry Blasphemy Prosecution Dropped
Human Remains Discovered In France Confirmed To Be Those Of ‘Disappeared’ Seamus Ruddy
AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA have dropped their investigation against Stephen Fry’s blasphemy case because there were no injured parties. The row erupted after a member of the public contacted the Gardai about Fry’s interview on Gay Byrne’s show The Meaning Of Life in February 2015. The footage went viral after it was aired and has now been seen more than seven million times on YouTube. Asked what he would say if he was confronted by God, Fry replied: “How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault? It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil. Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?” Questioned on how he would react if he was locked outside the pearly gates, he responded: “I would say, ‘Bone cancer in children? What’s that about?’ Because the God who created this
HUMAN remains discovered in a forest in France have been confirmed as those of “Disappeared” republican murder victim Seamus Ruddy, the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR) has said. DNA profiling by French investigators confirmed the remains belonged to the teacher, 32, from Co Down - who was abducted from Paris then murdered and buried by republican paramilitary group the INLA in 1985. The ICLVR was set up during the peace process by the UK and Irish governments to recover the bodies of those murdered and secretly buried, mainly by the IRA, in the 1970s and 1980s. There had been a number of previous searches in the same forest area for Mr Ruddy, the most recent by the ICLVR in 2008. The latest recovery leaves three of the 16 Disappeared victims still missing. The remains of Columba McVeigh, Joe Lynskey and Robert Nairac have yet to be found.
universe, if it was created by God, is quite clearly a maniac, utter maniac. Totally selfish. We have to spend our life on our knees thanking him? What kind of God would do that?” Fry’s remarks sparked controversy. Under the Defamation Act, the act is punishable by a fine of €25,000. “Blasphemy should have no place in the constitution,” Gerry Adams stated in the Dáil and urged Enda Kenny to arrange a referendum - which is needed to change the constitution - as soon as possible. Across the chamber, Mr Kenny said the last known prosecution for blasphemy in Ireland was thought to have been in 1855. There have been no such prosecutions under the Defamation Act, introduced in 2009, he added. Mr Kenny said it had already been agreed by government to hold a referendum on the issue, and it was simply a case of “finding an opportunity to deal with this”.
This Australian Politician Made History By Breast-Feeding In Parliament ON TUESDAY, Australian Senator Larissa Waters arrived at work, took her place in Parliament and voted on legislation. She also did something that had never been done before: She breast-fed her two-month-old daughter while on the floor. Her actions sparked headlines around the world. Waters, though, says that she was just doing her job. “It’s frankly ridiculous, really, that feeding one’s baby is international news. Women have been breast-feeding for as long as time immemorial,” she said. “I had hoped to not only be able to feed my baby but to send a message to young women that they belong in the Parliament.” Just two years ago, another member of the Australian Parliament, Kelly O’Dwyer, was told that she was missing too much work, because of her breast-feeding schedule. So last year, Australia’s lower house joined the Senate in allowing breast-feeding on the floor. But no MP had ever taken advantage of the new rule, until now. Last year, Carolina Bescana brought her infant son into the Spanish parliament and breastfed him. She was roundly con-

demned by all parties. But Bescana argued that her decision was more than just a publicity stunt. “It is time to bring the reality that is on the streets into official institutions, so that this chamber is more representative of our country,” she said. “We need to encourage that certain tasks stop being a private affair that women need to deal with confidentially in the invisibility of their homes.”
Wildfires On Our Doorsteps Comment
Words: Anne Lucey
FINALLY. Two or three years ago I was interviewed on Morning Ireland about wildfires on my doorstep and I warned about the danger to the forests of the national park and the horrible destruction of the beautiful moorland and wildlife. I was very strong about it. I was accused afterwards, by certain persons, of speaking like a hysterical housewife, rather than coldly as this person opined should be the way of the reporter. Now in the light of (pardon the pun) of the biggest forest in Ireland burning in Galway, a family having lost their home in Mayo, does anyone dare call me hysterical? There are times journalists need to be emotional and nail their colours to the mast. And this is not as easy as you might think. Let it be said clearly too that but for the bravery and the vigilance and exhaustive efforts of our local fire fighters, all of them part-time, the Killarney National Park would be gone the way of the Cloosh forest in Galway long ago. And who’s to say how many homes would have been lost?

Brenda and Fionn say ‘I do’ THE panoramic vistas surrounding of The Lake Hotel, Killarney, provided the picture-perfect backdrop to the nuptials of Brenda Murphy and Fionn Huggard. Brenda, from Mein, Knocknagoshel, and Fionn, from Sandyford, Co Dublin, were wed in a civil ceremony at the world-famous venue by registrar Mary T O’Shea. Also helping them ensure the occasion was memorable were the bride’s parents Elma and Denis Murphy and the groom’s mother and father Bernie and Martin Huggard as well as Fionn’s grandparents Jerry and Moira O’Kelly. Lending their support as bridesmaids were Patrice Murphy, Ciara Murphy and Michelle Hanafin. Dean Huggard, Richard McKenna and Barry Kenny took on the role of groomsmen

Brenda looked stunning in a gown sourced in the White Willow bridal boutique in Kenmare with Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty taking care of the bridal hairstyling. The team at Torc Travel has plenty of advice when it comes to planning that holiday of a lifetime
Pick the right spot
Choose a place you both dream of visiting. It could be years before you plan a trip like this again.
Timing is everything
It’s important to allocate a sufficient amount of time for the destination in mind to allow for jet lag but also to guarantee you are traveling during the desirable season.
Set your budget
And spend it wisely. Torc Travel can advise on what is worth the extra spend and where to cut back. For example, it is often worth upgrading your inside cabin to a window or balcony cabin when cruising.
Plan and book early
This will ensure you avoid disappointment and it helps secure better airfares, better room allocations and it also ticks a box
so you can concentrate on other wedding plans.
Tell everyone
Your hotel, your airline, put it on all enquiry forms, transfers and excursions. It may help with upgrades or simply result in a glass of champagne or some extra special attention.
Insurance
Insurance will give you peace of mind. You probably won’t need it, but if you do, it will be money well spent.

Dromhall is perfect for weddings from 80 to 320 guests. A fairylight backdrop and mood lighting in the room are just two of the many generous items that are included in their wedding packages. Another complimentary offering is the wedding car, which will get you to the church/ceremony on time and then off to your chosen photographic locations before whisking you back to the hotel. Garden Magic
The Sun Is Out The sun is out, and with it, the ever-present resonating drone of the lawnmower, says Debby Looney
BE IT a ride-on, or a Flymo, there is something comforting and reassuring about the sound of a lawnmower. First of all, it indicates a fine day. More than that though, there is something timeless about them, something passed down from generation to generation. I can still hear the sound of my grandfather’s manual rotary lawnmower, not knowing then, that at this time of my life I would be on the hunt for one at car-boot sales and antique fairs! I am often asked about lawn care and maintenance, always in August and September, and then again in the spring. From mid-March to mid-April, it is advisable to apply a general lawn fertiliser containing Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Applying lawn feed and weed, or a 4 in 1, is then applied in early summer. Weeds must be growing strongly, in order for the weed killer to take effect. Throughout the summer a feed high in Nitrogen can be given up to three times, until August. In autumn, a feed low in Nitrogen is given, along with sulphate of iron, for moss control. A product such as lawn sand is ideal. There are quite a few products on the market which are organic and give excellent results. Many of these contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which will help feed your lawn for the entire season. Also, mixing clover into your lawn will fix nitrogen, as well as making your lawn bee friendly. Maintenance jobs, such as aerating and scarifying, are ideally done in the autumn. However, if you have bare patches in your lawn, you may reseed them now. Loosen the soil by raking, and scatter grass seed on the area. About 25g/m if you are using fine lawn seed, or 40g/m for utility lawns. I have often been asked what the difference is between the various mixes of seed. Number 2 seed is the most popular type, it is hardwearing and made up of tough grass types. Number 1 seed is usually a mixture of Bentgrass and fescue, both being suitable for low mowing, they give a fine manicured “front” lawn. No matter how much time, money and energy you put into a lawn, there are three things to bear in mind… Climate, aspect and preparation! Our climate, (I may need to remind you after all these fine weeks!), is one of wet and rain. This does not help our lawn. Grass, like any other plant, prefers ideal conditions rather than those it often finds itself in. It does not like shade, or drought, so many types of grass will not thrive under trees. Preparation of the ground is key. At least six inches of good topsoil, which is well-drained is desirable.

Discover Killarney’s Hidden Valleys, Mountains, Reeks And Lakeshores LACE on those walking boots and limber up for Killarney Walking Festival which takes place from June 9-11 featuring iconic treks on Carrantuohill, in the Gap of Dunloe and the Old Kenmare Road. The festival, whose headquarters are at The Gleneagle Hotel, offers you the chance to enjoy a weekend of long relaxing guided walks and boat trips. This year’s charity sun “set” on Strickeen is in aid of the Kerry Parents & Friends bus fund. This event, including a walk and a Kerry Polka set dance on the summit of Strickeen Mountain, takes place on Friday, June 9, departing Kate Kearney’s in the Gap of Dunloe at 7.30pm. The “bus fund” is the initiative of Agnes Rooney whose sister Mairead – cared for full-time by Agnes since their mother’s passing in 2015 – has Down’s syndrome, and has been helped by the group for decades. Agnes herself admits she’d be lost without the association’s assistance, which has led to her ongoing attempt to raise €60,000 to purchase a wheelchair-accessible bus for the charity. To date the present fleet of 17 buses is deteriorating with no funding for replacement. “These buses take Mairead and her friends to

Name The Unit
Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech. support with suggestions. This week I’m going to sidestep pure tech to talk about some Science, specifically - Measurement Unit Names. I came across an article recently which piqued my interest. It was about the history of where the names of units of measurements come from. The weather is improving day by day, and we measure this in degrees of Celsius. This comes from Anders Celsius (1701-1744) - a Swedish astronomer and professor who invented the temperature scale where water freezes at 0 and boils at 100. Something we use everyday is electricity. Alessandro Volta (pictured) (1745-1827) not only gave us his name for Volts, but also used his tongue to detect electricity and invented the first electric battery. Similarly André-Marie Ampère (17751836) who gives us “Amps” was one of the main founders of electrodynamics. If you happen to be reading this on a phone, (which we may talk about next week!) you can thank Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922). This Scottishborn inventor of the telephone and a teacher of the deaf also gives us the measurement of sound - the decibel. Lastly - just a bit of fun: if you’re partial to spicy food, you can thank Wilbur Scoville
(1865-1942) for quantifying the heat scale of the Capsicum, or pepper - which we measure by Scoville heat units. Hopefully our weather will heat up like the best Scoville unit available! Enjoy!

Michael Schumacher’s 1991 Benetton Is Going Up For Auction IF YOU have quite a lot of money to spare and are a massive F1 fan, surely snapping up a 1991 Benetton previously driven by an eventual seven-time world champion is very tempting. This B191-02 is going up for auction at the Bonhams Spa Classic sale next month and is listed at €1 million. It debuted with the not-so-well-known Roberto Moreno at the third round of the 1991
season but was then taken over by Nelson Piquet. He won with the car in Montreal, and it was then raced by Schumacher at the final two rounds – although he retired in both of them. There are few opportunities to snap up a classic F1 car, let alone one that was raced by Piquet and Schumacher. It’s also an absolutely stunning car, there’ll be a lot of interest.

Germany Falls Out Of Love With Diesel Sales are plummeting all over Europe in post-Dieselgate and no more so than in their former heartland, Germany. German car-makers build and sell more diesels than any other. The entire German car market fell eight per cent in April. It’s perhaps no coincidence that Germany has finally implemented a subsidy scheme for electrified passenger cars, but the take-up rate is nowhere near enough to offset the fall in diesel sales, which might lead to cleaner local air quality but a rise in CO2 emissions. Surprisingly, the sales of diesel-powered cars didn’t falter in the immediate wake of the Dieselgate scandal — rising to almost 50 per cent of all German sales in November 2015 — but the fuel’s share has been sliding ever since. Eighteen months later, diesel’s share of the Ger-
man car market is down to 41.3 per cent as consumer consciousness, a series of smog alerts in German cities and serious court challenges that seek to ban its use in urban areas. Several German cities are pushing to have older diesel cars banned. While cleaner urban air is the goal, the German Association of Automotive Industry has defended diesel as a necessary evil. The fuel is also facing hurdles all over Europe, with London’s Lord Mayor, Sadiq Khan, insisting that the British Government’s proposed diesel-emissions laws won’t go far enough, leaving the country with “illegally polluted and unsafe air for at least another decade.” Writing in an open letter to British newspapers after the Government rejected an air-quality commission’s diesel-tax recommendations,
Khan insisted the city’s toxic air represented nothing short of a public-health emergency. It’s not just passenger cars that are under the microscope, but also the diesel commercial vehicles that have filled city shops for decades. Renault and Nissan meantime are revelling in growing sales of their zero-emission vans, having delivered more than 50,000 battery-electric commercial vehicles already, mostly in Europe.

W.H.O. Says Tyre Noise Is A Killer European legislators are targeting noise when the rubber meets the road. Over one million lives are lost each year due to traffic noise, says the World Health Organisation (WHO). And it’s just not the sudden shock to the system when a boy racer blasts past. No, something as apparently ‘benign’ as tyre noise also needs to be outlawed, says WHO, or at the very least reduced in its intensity. Tyre noise is at its worst above 50km/h, apparently, but can make its presence heard in light vehicles from speeds as low as 30km/h. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has set limits for
tyre noise, but the International Standards Organisation has noted in a press release that these limits place the onus on vehicle and tyre manufacturers; Western European road builders should also resurface roads for a quieter environment. Indeed, the ISO says that many Western European countries are already embarked on road resurfacing to reduce noise generated when the tyre makes contact with the road. The ISO first published a standard for the measurement of road noise back in 1997, but has more recently developed a new protocol for testing tyre noise, ISO 11819-2, and tyre identification, ISO/TS 11819-3. A third standard, ISO/TS 13471-1, was
developed to allow for temperature variations when testing for tyre/road noise. Tyres are something we take for granted but are the single biggest constant in vehicle’s safety so to pay more attention could save a life.

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels JOHN 14:1-12. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.” Trust in another person can help us in difficult times. Remember and give thanks for the people you were able to trust in difficult moments. Remember also when your faith in God helped you through anxious moments. Thomas struggled with the desire, which is in all of us, to know exactly the destination before we set out. Jesus invites us to make an act of faith and to take one step at a time. Can you recall times when it helped you to take that trusting attitude to life? Jesus proposed himself to Thomas as the way, the truth and the life. In what ways has Jesus been the way, the truth and the life for you on your faith journey? Philip wanted Jesus to give him a glimpse of God and got the surprising answer “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus put a human face on the love of God. He gives us a glimpse of the divine. We are Jesus in the world today, called to follow Jesus and to put a human face on the love of God for those who meet us. Who are the people whose love has helped you to believe in the love of God? To whom have you given an occasional glimpse of the divine?
Musings
John Byrne OSA
THE Gospel presents Jesus as the guide in life, the “way, truth and life”. The Christian centre is the person of Christ. Our work for Jesus and our love for people, no matter what our calling in life, flow from this. Mother Teresa was once asked why she did what she did, and she simply said “for Jesus”. This centre always holds, it cannot be unhinged. It is a deeply personal relationship: we are led by Jesus ‘one by one’, known by name, not as one of a group. Prayer is the way of keeping our centre of conviction and motivation strong. The Eastern approach to Jesus is very much the “way”; while the African is the “life”. The European stress is the “truth”. In Europe we need to rediscover also the joy and vibrancy of the African and Latin American expressions of faith, and also the presence of God in all life’s moods and journeys of the Indian and Eastern traditions. We can get so caught up in small or even big truths and doctrines that we miss other centres of faith. All faith needs the balanced approach to Jesus – way, truth and life. Recall people who guided you well in your life. Pray for them. Jesus, our way, guide me in life; Jesus our truth, teach me your meaning of life; Jesus, our life, love me always.
The Deep End
Donal Neary, SJ, Messenger Publications
“WORRYING is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength – carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Corrie ten Boom had plenty of cause for worry over the course of her lifetime. During World War II, she, along with her father and sister, provided a refuge in their home for a number of Jewish friends, playing a pivotal role in the Dutch “underground” who sheltered Jews. Their home was eventually raided and the entire family arrested, her father dying in prison and her sister in a concentration camp. Corrie was sent to a series of camps but was released, and afterwards told her story in a book called The Hiding Place. Corrie’s heart must have been troubled, often, but her strong faith sustained her and became the lens through which she viewed her life story: ‘Every experience God gives us, every person he puts in our lives is the perfect preparation for the future that only he can see.’ The majority of us will never have to deal with as desperate a situation as Corrie’s. But we have our own anxieties, whether big or small. None of us knows how the future is going to turn out, and that is precisely why we tend to worry. In today’s Gospel Thomas frets: “Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” But Jesus has reassuring words. “I am the way.” Hand in hand with Jesus, we can walk the road ahead. Barriers A Hazard To Kerry Motorcyclists
THE Cheval de Frise (Frisian horse) was a medieval anti-cavalry measure consisting of projecting spikes; it was designed to defend against horse-mounted warriors or more specifically to cause harm to them. I don’t ride horses but do ride motorcycles, being mindful that in so choosing to do so makes me a vulnerable road user who must be alert to increased risk. Motorcyclists do not welcome the tensioned steel wire barriers as used in Ireland on some motorways and dual carriageways; they are colloquially referred to as “cheese cutters”. A number of EU countries have outlawed their use. If well maintained they remain hazardous to motorcyclists but in Kerry they are frequently damaged compounding their menace. The photograph was taken on the Tralee bypass on Monday (May 8). Over the years, such damage has occurred on the Tralee and the Castleisland bypass. I notify Kerry County Council by email if damage is evi-
dent – weeks may pass before I use either road and notice the issue. The damaged uprights are replaced but frankly not as promptly as I would wish. Last October I had email correspondence with Kerry County Council about previous Tralee bypass barrier damage. I highlighted the new situation (as photographed above) on April 18; my email was not acknowledged and the “Cheval de Frise” remains in place three weeks later. The use of these barriers should be critically reviewed; in the interim leaving exposed spikes oriented to maximise their destructive capacity is extremely reckless. Ideally I’d like to see these barriers banned, but until then local authorities should not be depending on the likes of me to notify them of damage; a regular routine inspection system should be in place allied to a prompt repair regime. Currently neither is evident. Gerry Christie, 26 Monalee, Tralee
Calls For Road Leading To Carrantuohill To Be Widened
I AM calling on Kerry County Council to provide laybys and widen the Lisliebane road, Beaufort, one of the main roads leading to Carrantuohill and the new council car park. Speaking at a recent meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District, I raised the matter on health and safety grounds as this road has got significantly busier and more dangerous in recent years. There are more and more people climbing Carrantuohill every year and the traffic on the Lisliebane road has increased greatly. Those wishing to climb Ireland’s highest mountain, should be able to travel the public roads leading to it safely. I requested the council to examine the possibility of a tourism grant being made available. The local authority replied that the provision of laybys on the L11756, local tertiary road, at Lisleibane is suitable for funding through the Councillor Specific Municipal District Operations fund provided suitable locations can be identified along the road. An estimate shall be prepared upon request. Councillor Michael Cahill, Fianna Fail, Rossbeigh, Glenbeigh Editor’s Note: If you have an opinion you would like to air, you can write to Letters to the Editor, Killarney Advertiser, Unit 1C Park Place, High Street, Killarney, or email newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser.ie All letters must be accompanied by a name, address and phone number for verification purposes. Killarney Walks For Nathan AS DAWN broke over Killarney on Saturday, thousands of people shone a light on suicide prevention as they took part in the Darkness Into Light walk. The Killarney event is dedicated to the memory of Nathan O’Carroll and is spearheaded by his parents Marie and Denis O’Carroll and family. “We would thank everyone who took part. The weather was fantastic and we are very grateful to all who supported it as well as Micheal Lucey and the directors at Killarney Racecourse,” Marie told the Killarney Advertiser. The Killarney event was one of seven to take place in Kerry that morning in aid of Pieta House. Now in its ninth year, Darkness Into Light (DIL) – supported by Electric Ireland – started in the early hours of Saturday at 4.15am with thousands of people walking or running a 5km route while the dawn was breaking. Since it began in one venue – the Phoenix Park in Dublin in 2009 – Darkness Into Light has grown into a global movement against suicide. Funds raised help to keep Pieta House counselling services free to those in suicidal crisis, people who engage in selfharm and those bereaved by suicide.
Foot Health Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains how best to look after your feet OUR feet work hard and are vital to our health, comfort and balance. Here you will find information on how best to look after your feet. Corns and calluses mostly develop on the feet or toes and can be very painful to walk on, especially where they press on the nerves surrounding the skin. A callus is a flattened area of thick, hard dead skin that has developed on the sole of the foot where there is a lot of weight and pressure exerted. A corn is a more localised and highly concentrated point of thick hard dead skin, usually located at a pressure point such as under a toe joint (known as a hard corn). Corns can also develop between the toes due to moisture and friction of one toe against the other (referred to as soft corns). Ingrown toenails An ingrown toenail can occur when the edges of the nails curl into the flesh of the toe. It is painful and if left untreated it can become infected and lead to severe inflammation and pain in the toe. Such problems can be caused by trauma, tight footwear, excessive flattening of the foot causing rotation of the toe, self-treatment with scissors or congenital problems associated with the flesh at the sides of the toes. Thickened toenails Thick nails can be caused by a number of reasons including fungal infections (Onychomycosis), aging, injury, psoriasis or infections, to name a few. Usually, having thickened nails is more a cause for embarrassment, depending on the underlining development. We specialise in thickened nail reductions. Don’t ignore them, have them treated.

2ND ANNIVERSARY O’DONOGHUE
8TH ANNIVERSARY To my loving father John Nagle, Brendan’s Place Killarney, Who sadly passed away on the 10th May 2014. To Dad, on your third anniversary, You always brought Mom roses. As kids, you’d snip a rose from a country hedge, Telling us ‘you can’t beat the old and the wild ones’. When we were teens, you’d pass in on a Friday evening, Lay a bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table, and Kiss Mom on top of the head, on the way to the kettle. So we knew growing up what love was, That quiet, patient kind of love. The past few years, in your absence, Those roses you planted for her in the backyard, They would bloom on Christmas Eve.
FOLLIN In loving memory of Dermot O’Donoghue late of Lacca Kilcummin Killarney who died on the 18th of May 2015. In loving memory of Vincent Follin, late of 61 Park Drive, Killarney who passed away on May 13th 2009. Fondly remembered by his wife Maureen, daughters Carmel and Susan, sister Maureen, relations and friends. Mass in Our Lady of The Wayside Church Kilwatermoy, Tallow, Co. Waterford on Saturday May 13th at 7.30pm.
2ND ANNIVERSARY O’DONOGHUE
Almost as a signal to her that your were still here, Watching over the family that you built together. As kids, we grew up on daffodils, Pulled from the side of some country lane, While the Mitsubishi Galant was idling. You’d come home, cut the stalk at an angle, Pop it in a drinking glass and place it on the bedside locker. We’d beam each time we entered the room at the sight. As teens, we grew up on bouquets of daffodils, Purchased from a bucket at a Tralee Road gate. They always did arrive a few days late of our birthday, But we learned long ago that timing wasn’t your strong suit. It would never matter the presents that preceded, Those daffodils were the holy grail, the golden chalice, They illuminate every precious paternal memory. As a child, a teen, an adult, We knew what real love was. The garden, rich with flowers, was the canvas On which you said, ‘I love you.’ And for every rose or daffodil we see Swaying lightly in the breeze, we remember you. We remember that you taught us what love is. You taught us that a rose may bloom in winter, That a bulb, planted in the dark of winter, may survive And grow into something that resonates new life. May we too survive the winter of our grief And know that someday, flowers may grow again. Love Always, Sam and Danz
In loving memory of Dermot O’Donoghue late of Lacca Kilcummin Killarney who died on the 18th of May 2015. Dad A father is special And so is his name Without one to love Life is never the same But as long as I live I will always be glad Of a great father I was proud to have. Grandad No matter how life changes No matter what we do A special place within our hearts Is always kept for you. Always remembered by your daughter Marie, son in law Dara, grandchildren Darren and Caoimhe.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

Donal’s beard shave raises over €6500
Grace Notes What Colour Is Your Soul? Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on how music and seasons are linked to certain shades
“CAN you paint with all the colours of the wind?” That is a line from one of the first songs I ever sang and it is a song that I now love to teach my singing students. The reason I ask this question is because I have been thinking a great deal about the seasons and the colours they bring with them. As a young singer I competed in many singing competitions and my dad was always fascinated at how the adjudicators would describe the “colour” of a singer’s voice. My own voice was often described as being “gold”, “chocolate”, “bronze” and “dark”. These types of colours are used to describe a warm, often low, voice in singing. Words like “bright”, “yellow” and “light” are then used when we talk about a
higher voice. I am wondering if there might be a connection between the colour of our souls and the colours that we are drawn to. I always say that I love the autumn and winter. I love the colours and the cosiness of these seasons. Most people can’t understand why I don’t love the summer but maybe it is because I don’t relate to that season’s colours. I wonder if other types of artists feel this way. Does your brush often hold a certain colour? Do you base a lot of the stories you write during a specific season? What is your favourite colour? What colour is your soul? • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie
IT WAS a real close shave for Donal O’Sullivan who submitted his beard and tresses to the razor recently – and all in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. His niece Sadhbh Lalor has inspired the Kilcummin man to grow a beard and go without his regular barber services for his crowning glory. He then took centre stage in The Klub Bar in Kilcummin for the finale of his hugely popular fundraiser in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. “We would like to say thank you to all who supported our fundraising night and Killarney Advertiser for highlighting it,” said Donal. “The beard shave event was a huge success and we had a packed house. More importantly we managed to raise over €6500!”

Kenmare Dump Legion Out Of Club Championship The underdogs pulled out all the stops to set up a final date with Dr Crokes, writes Adam Moynihan
Kenmare booked their place in this year’s Club Championship final with a well-deserved fivepoint win over Legion in the Park on Sunday. Legion went into this game in high spirits following a superb victory over Dingle the week before and were hot favourites to make what would have been their third Club Championship final in five years. Kenmare, however, looked really motivated for this one and crucial goals from Stephen O’Brien and Seán O’Shea, one two minutes before half time and the other two minutes before full time, were the difference in the end. With Paul O’Connor out of commission, Kenmare needed big performances from O’Brien and O’Shea and both were hugely influential throughout; together they were responsible for 2-10 of Kenmare’s impressive 3-12 tally. Legion started well and found themselves 5-2 up with 19 minutes on the clock, Finbarr Murphy, Donal Lyne, Conor Keane and James O’Donoghue (two) all finding the target while Seán O’Shea kept the scoreboard ticking over for Kenmare. Corner back Dara Crowley was directly responsible the game’s opening goal in the 20th minute as he did superbly to keep the ball in play by the sideline before finding Mícheál McCarthy, who in turn picked out the onrushing Dean Cassidy with a precise hand pass. Cassidy composed himself and fired an accurate shot beyond Brian Kelly to the corner of the net to tie things up at 0-5 to 1-2. Rob Leen restored Legion’s lead with an excellent outside-of-the-boot point but Stephen O’Brien equalised from close range in the 26th minute. Another Seán O’Shea free gave Kenmare the lead as the half time whistle approached and moments later Kenmare had the ball in the net for a second time. Legion failed to win their own kick-out and a dangerous counter attack ensued. When the ball was eventually squared to Stephen O’Brien inside the square, the pacey attacker couldn’t miss. His Kerry teammate James O’Donoghue pulled one back on the stroke of half time to make it 0-7 to 2-4 at the break. O’Donoghue was involved again early in the second as Legion stole in for an equalising goal. He jinked in and out of traffic before finding Conor Culloty, who teed up Denis Sheahan for a simple tap-in at the back post.
This could have been a momentumshifting score for Legion but Kenmare quickly cancelled it out with four unanswered points of their own, O’Shea, Dara Crowley, David Hallissey and O’Brien all raising white flags to open up a four-point gap. Alan O’Neill’s charges huffed and puffed but struggled to break down a stubborn Kenmare defence who were getting more and more compact as the half wore on, although when substitute Jamie O’Sullivan swung over big score in the 53rd minute Legion trailed by just two. Kenmare were reduced to 14 men seconds later when captain Kevin O’Sullivan picked up his second yellow following an altercation with a Legion maor uisce. This should have provided Legion with a muchneeded boost but once again it was Kenmare who responded more positively. With just three minutes to go, Seán O’Shea picked up possession and waltzed through the Legion defence before applying a classy finish to open up a five-point lead and seal Kenmare’s passage to the final.

Club Championship (Semi-Final) Legion 1-13 Kenmare 3-12
Legion will be left scratching their heads as to how they can go from being so impressive against a team like Dingle one week to looking so ordinary against Kenmare the next. The sides meet again in the County Championship in Derreen on Sunday and Legion will have to be much, much better if they’re to avoid another humbling defeat. Legion scorers: James O’Donoghue (0-6, 2f), Conor Keane (0-3, 2f), Denis Sheahan (1-0), Finbarr Murphy (0-1 ‘45), Donal Lyne (0-1), Rob Leen (0-1) and Jamie O’Sullivan (0-1). Kenmare scorers: Seán O’Shea (1-7, 5f), Stephen O’Brien (1-3), Dean Cassidy (1-0), Dara Crowley (01) and David Hallissey (0-1).

Eyes On The Prize For Club Football Final Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald KENMARE SHAMROCKS qualified for the Kerry senior club football final at a sun-kissed Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last where they defeated Legion in the semi-final 3-12 to 1-13. Legion were unbeaten this season and were favourites to win this game following up on their away win to Dingle on the previous Sunday. Kenmare, the Munster Intermediate champions, will now meet Dr Crokes in the Kerry club final, probably in October. From the published team Legion had to go without Tom Moriarty and Jack O’Neill while Kenmare were short Paul O’Connor who was unable to get off work to play. County sub Stephen O’Brien and last year’s All Ireland winning minor captain Sean O’Shea were on song and they contributed most to
this victory. O’Shea hit 1-7 of which 1-2 was scored from play. I was also impressed by Dara Crowley in defence. O’Shea opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a point, but this was quickly offset with a Finbarr Murphy point. James O’Donoghue kicked a great point from an acute angle to put Legion ahead. Further points from Donal Lyne and 2 from Conor Keane left Legion well on top until Dean Cassidy scored the winners first goal. The sides were level 5 points for the Legion and 1-2 for Kenmare after 17 minutes. A goal and a point from Stephen O’Brien left Kenmare leading 2-4 to 6 points coming up to half time until James O’Donoghue landed a great free for a point. At the interval Kenmare led 2-4 to 0-7. Legion’s other scorer in the 24th minute was Rob Lyne. Legion were back in business early in the second half when Conor Keane scored a point. Better was to follow five minutes in to the half when Legion centre back Denis Sheahan was up with the play and palmed the ball in to an empty net after good
work by James O’Donoghue. The sides were level once more 1-8 to 2-5. One expected Legion to kick on for victory from here onwards but Kenmare were full of running. Points from O’Shea, Crowley, Hallissey and O’Brien left Legion trailing. A James O’Donoghue point left Legion adrift 2-9 to 1-9. The timely introduction of Jamie O’Sullivan should have kick started a Legion revival, but the Shamrock’s defence was tight. Sean O’Shea kept putting over those points to keep that winning momentum going. Points by James O’Donoghue and Conor Keane made for a great finish. Kenmare captain Kevin O’Sullivan was sent off in the closing stages but Legion made little use of the extra man. Up pops Sean O’Shea for his goal. Conor Keane and O’Shea traded points to leave the final score 3-12 to 1-13. Legion will have an early opportunity to reverse this result, as they are at home to Kenmare in Direen on Sunday next in the first round of the Kerry SFC.

Killarney Rugby Youngsters Do The Double Words: Adam Moynihan U-14 West Munster Cup Final Killarney 15 Castleisland 7 The Killarney U-14 rugby team completed a historic double by winning the West Munster Cup in Abbeyfeale last week. It was a fitting end to what was a tremendous season for the talented youngsters who had already secured the league title with 11 victories from 12 outings during the winter months. Preparations for the final centred around a fastmoving style of play where players were expected to avoid contact and make plenty of offloads. The fine weather on the day certainly suited Killarney’s attacking approach. Beforehand, coaches Séamus Grealy, John O’Connell and Eoin Seery encouraged their charges to enjoy the occasion, not to worry about mistakes, and to finish the year off by making a bit of history. The match itself was a cracking spectacle that showcased some brilliant ball-handling, remarkable defensive work and outstanding individual and team plays. Killarney took a stranglehold on the game thanks to tries from Tomás Clifford and Liam Randles with a conversion from Donnchadh Grealy and a peach of a penalty kick from Peter Walsh bringing their tally to 15. Castleisland scored a try with seven minutes to go and duly converted to make it 15-7, but Killarney held on for a momentous win. It was a superb team effort and everyone made a valuable contribution. In the front row, Adam Cronin was solid in the scrum, Brendan O’Donoghue made some great line breaks and powerhouse Odeniz Koyun’s ballripping was a joy to behold. Darren Cronin controlled the line-outs with second row partner John McCarthy who tackled like a lion
all day. The flanks were superbly marshalled by both Liam Walsh and Bailey O’Sullivan along with team captain Padraic Talbot at No. 8; all three put their bodies on the line time and time again. Peter Walsh continuously piled the pressure on his opposite number at scrums and gave a steady supply of possession to out half Donnchadh Grealy, who straightened the line on a number of occasions and provided some great ball to centres Liam Randles and Tomás Clifford. Both proved their mettle and were well deserving of their tries. The wings were very busy in the second half with great defending from Mikey Moriarty while Rian Colleran made a number of exceptional line breaks. Full-back James Kennelly did well under the high balls and didn’t put a foot wrong all game.
The subs on the day were Seán Hickey, Shane McAllister, Josh Campbell, Ruairí Coughlan, Harry Kelly and Cormac Rowe who all played a vital role throughout the year by fighting for places and raising the overall standard of the team. After the game, the coaching staff paid tribute to all of the players and parents for their dedication and support. They also thanked guest coaches PJ Lucey, Bill Stack, Ger Moynihan, Ray Gadsen and Denis Corridan for adding to the skill level and overall development of the panel throughout the campaign. County Championship Round 1 Preview Adam Moynihan looks ahead to an exciting weekend of action as the quest for the Bishop Moynihan Cup gets under way
Can Anyone Stop The Crokes?
Championship this time out. It looks like a crazy price to me, especially when you consider this crucial fact: Rathmore are the best team in Kerry at beating the Crokes. Verdict: Rathmore by two. East Kerry Last year: Round 2B (lost to Milltown/Castlemaine) Winners: Five times (1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1997, 1998, 1999) Clubs: Firies, Fossa, Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla, Listry, Spa Tournament odds: 16/1 Rathmore Last year: Semi-final (lost to Kenmare District) Winners: Never Current form: WLLWL Tournament odds: 20/1
Dr Crokes v Mid Kerry Sunday, May 14 at 3.45pm Fitzgerald Stadium
Reigning champions Dr Crokes get their title defence up and running with a potentially tricky tie against Mid Kerry in the Park. Crokes were scintillating throughout the 2016 campaign and comfortably defeated Kenmare District in the final before going on to claim Munster and All-Ireland glory. The Lewis Road club are stacked with talent and at 13/8 they’re certainly the bookies’ favourites to reign in Kerry once again. A twelfth County Championship would tie the alltime record currently held by Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers. Mid Kerry could, however, pose Pat O’Shea’s team some serious problems. Last year Darran O’Sullivan captained the divisional side to impressive victories over Kilcummin and Dingle and they were headed for the last four until a last minute Shane Ryan goal saved Rathmore in the quarters. Milltown/Castlemaine’s relegation from the Championship will be Mid Kerry’s gain and with intercounty stars like Peter Crowley and Donnchadh Walsh pulling the strings, they have the potential to reach the latter stages of this year’s tournament (although they might have to go through the back door to get there). Verdict: Crokes by four. Dr Crokes Last year: Champions (beat Kenmare District) Winners: 11 times (1901, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1991, 2000, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016) Current form: WWWW Tournament odds: 13/8 Mid Kerry Last year: Quarter final (lost to Rathmore) Winners: 4 times (1967, 1971, 1992, 2008) Clubs: Beaufort, Cromane, Glenbeigh-Glencar, Keel, Laune Rangers, Milltown/Castlemaine Tournament odds: 8/1
Legion Need A Reaction In Game 3 Legion v Kenmare Shamrocks Sunday, May 14 at 1.30pm Derreen
These two sets of players must be sick of the sight of each other. They’ve already met twice in 2017 and this will be their second game in seven days. With the series currently split at one apiece, Sunday’s crunch tie is sure to be a tight one. Legion had the perfect start to 2017, winning their opening three league games - including a 1-8 to 1-4 victory over Kenmare – before finally getting the better of Dingle in the quarter final of the Club Championship. After the disappointment of 2016 the Killarney club seemed to have turned a corner and were expected to handle Kenmare again in last week’s semi-final. Kenmare, however, had other ideas and impressed en route to a five-point win. It should be no surprise, really, that they’re capable of mixing it with the likes of Rahilly’s and Legion; they’re the current Munster Intermediate champions and half of this team reached last year’s county final with Kenmare
South Kerry Know How To Win District. Legion’s defence was uncharacteristically generous last Sunday and danger men Stephen O’Brien and Seán O’Shea will have to be more closely minded if they’re to give themselves a chance. Star forward James O’Donoghue has been looking sharp, though, and home advantage might just be enough to see them through. Verdict: Legion by one. Legion Last year: Round 3 (lost to Kerins O’Rahilly’s) Winners: Once (1946) Current form: WWWDWL Tournament odds: 10/1 Kenmare Shamrocks Last year: Intermediate champions (beat Templenoe) Winners: Never Current form: WLWWW Tournament odds: 25/1
Fickle Foes Go Toe-To-Toe East Kerry v Rathmore Sunday, May 14 at 2pm Fitzgerald Stadium
East Kerry, one-time kingpins of the county scene, haven’t made a final since their last triumph in 1999. It’s a paltry return for one of the most competitive divisions in the county who, on paper at least, should have enough talent to regularly make the last eight, something they haven’t done in years. Rumour has it that things have changed and that players are finally buying into the set-up but only time will tell. There are some fantastic young footballers coming through at the moment at all of the eligible clubs so it’d be great to see East Kerry back challenging at the business end of the season. Rathmore, meanwhile, remain the greatest anomaly in Kerry football. Ordinary one day, unbeatable the next, it’s impossible to know what you’re getting from this team. They reached the last four in 2016 and also retained the O’Donoghue Cup for the third time in a row yet the bookies have them at 20/1, or ninth favourites, to win their first ever County
Kerins O’Rahilly’s v South Kerry Sunday, May 14 at 2.30pm Strand Road
These two sides met in the opening round of last year’s County Championship and South Kerry claimed a narrow victory, eventually running out 3-10 to 1-15 winners in a very close encounter. Bryan Sheehan and co. went on reach the quarters where they were dumped out by Dingle. It was a disappointing end to their title defence and they’ll be going all out to make amends in 2017. Rahilly’s have had a thoroughly uninspiring start to the season and, following disheartening defeats to Kenmare and Stacks in the Club Championship, they’re just one defeat away from losing their senior status. They’ll play Kilcummin in the relegation playoff. The likes of Barry John Keane, Tommy Walsh and Jack Savage can be deadly on their day but South Kerry should have the requisite championship know-how to get the job done. Verdict: South Kerry by three. Kerins O’Rahilly’s Last year: Quarter final (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: Six times (1933, 1939, 1953, 1954, 1957, 2002) Current form: LDWLL Tournament odds: 10/1 South Kerry Last year: Quarter final (lost to Dingle) Winners: Ten times (1955, 1956, 1958, 1981, 1982, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2015) Clubs: Derrynane, Dromid Pearses, Renard, Skellig Rangers, Sneem, St. Mary’s, St. Michael’s/Foilmore, Valentia, Waterville Tournament odds: 5/1
Geaney Could Take Dingle All The Way Kenmare District v Dingle Saturday, May 13 at 6.30pm Templenoe
Kenmare District reached last year’s final while Dingle haven’t won the County Championship in 59 years and have registered just two victories in their opening six games of the campaign. Yet the men from west Kerry still go into this one as firm favourites.
Sport
12.05.17 The hosts have, of course, lost around half of their players now that Kenmare Shamrocks are a senior club and they have a real struggle on their hands to rebuild their squad for this year’s championship. At 11/2, Dingle are third favourites to win the competition outright but the recent hiccup against Legion has raised some question marks about their championship pedigree. Interestingly, Templenoe held Dingle to a draw in the County League as recently as a month ago so an upset isn’t completely unthinkable… But realistically when you have someone as ridiculously talented as Paul Geaney leading the line, you’re going to win more games than you lose. Verdict: Dingle by three. Kenmare District Last year: Runners-up (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: Twice (1974, 1987) Clubs: Templenoe, Tousist, Kilgarvan Tournament odds: 50/1 Dingle Last year: Semi-final (lost to Dr Crokes) Winners: Six times (1938, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1944, 1948) Current form: WDDDLW Tournament odds: 11/2
Kilcummin On The Brink St Brendan’s v Kilcummin Saturday, May 13 at 6.30pm Blennerville
St Brendan’s and Kilcummin have only won two championship games between them in three years so this draw does, at the very least, offer two of the weaker teams a chance at some modest success at this level. To be honest, Kilcummin will be far more concerned with retaining their senior status when the Club Championship relegation decider rolls around. Having lost to Dingle in Round 1 of the playoffs, Kilcummin will face Kerins O’Rahilly’s who were well beaten by Stacks on the other side of the draw. The losers will play intermediate football in 2018. Rahilly’s aren’t exactly on top form at the moment but you’d have to say that Kilcummin’s place in next year’s County Championship is in real jeopardy. Saturday’s game against Kieran’s is a tough one to call but Kilcummin might just edge it. Verdict: Kilcummin by one. St Brendan’s Last year: Round 2B (lost to Rathmore) Winners: Never Clubs: Ardfert, Churchill, John Mitchels, Na Gaeil, St Pat’s Blennerville Tournament odds: 50/1 Kilcummin Last year: Round 2B (lost to West Kerry) Winners: Never Current form: LWLLL Tournament odds: 100/1
Rangers Head To The Wild West West Kerry v Feale Rangers Sunday, May 14 at 2.30pm Gallarus
Kieran’s Hoping To Rock The Rockies Austin Stacks v St Kieran’s Saturday, May 13 at 6.30pm Connolly Park
St Kieran’s almost provided the upset of the tournament last year when they just fell short of beating eventual All-Ireland champions Dr Crokes in the second round. Key players Thomas Hickey and Philip O’Connor both found the net in a pulsating 3-12 to 2-16 defeat. They’ll be hoping to rock the boat again in this year’s championship. Champions in 2014, Stacks should just about have enough in the tank to win this one - in spite of their decidedly uninspiring start to the 2017 campaign. Verdict: Stacks by two. Austin Stacks Last year: Quarter final (lost to Kenmare District) Winners: 12 times (1928, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1936, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1994, 2014) Current form: LWLW Tournament odds: 8/1 St Kieran’s Last year: Round 3 (lost to Rathmore) Winners: Once (1988) Clubs: Ballymacelligott, Brosna, Castleisland Desmonds, Cordal, Currow, Knocknagoshel, Scartaglin Tournament odds: 20/1
After last year’s 22-point opening round defeat to the Crokes, West Kerry will be hoping for a far more positive start this time out. They face a Feale Rangers side who will also be eager to improve on last year’s showing; they lost to St Kieran’s in the first round by 1-17 to 1-15 before bowing out against Kerins O’Rahilly’s. Rangers have enough fire power to come back from the Gaeltacht with the spoils. Verdict: Feale Rangers by four. West Kerry Last year: Round 3 (lost to Austin Stacks) Winners: Three times (1984, 1985, 1990) Clubs: An Ghaeltacht, Annascaul, Castlegregory, Lispole Tournament odds: 33/1 Feale Rangers Last year: Round 2B (lost to Kerins O’Rahilly’s) Winners: Three times (1978, 1980, 2007) Clubs: Clounmacon, Duagh, Finuge, Listowel Emmets, Moyvane, St. Senan’s Tournament odds: 25/1

Rugby News ... Rugby News & Views with Liam Murphy SO THERE PRO 12 reached its final stages last weekend as the focus now turns to the Semi-finals. Munster took on Connacht in the final round of the league at Thomond Park last Saturday and Leinster played Ulster at the Kingspan in Belfast. In the End, Ulster beat the visitors by four points and Munster comprehensively beat Connacht to finish the league in first position. This means that Munster now take on the Ospreys at Thomond Park in the semi-final while Leinster take on the Scarlets at the RDS in the second semifinal. It’s hard to see beyond a Munster V Leinster PRO12 final at the Aviva on the 27th of May. Wouldn’t it be fitting to win the PRO12 as a season ending tribute to Anthony Foley? Munster walloped Connacht 50 points to 14 with the men in Red scoring seven tries. Not a very nice going away present for Pat Lam who moves onto coach Bristol next season. Closer to home, our fantastic U14’s at Killarney RFC completed their historic season with more silverware – adding the West Munster Cup to the West Munster League title won last March. In an amazing season, which saw the lads win 13 out of 14 matches in the league the lads did themselves and their families proud last Tuesday night at the Grove in Abbeyfeale. A huge travelling contingent watched Seamus Grealy, John O’Connell and Eoin Seery’s men put in a commanding and confident display to win 15 points to 7. It was fantastic to be in Abbeyfeale to witness such a cracking match. The passing was sublime and Killarney dominated in every position. Following on from the seniors winning two Cups as well as promotion, Rugby in Killarney is absolutely flying and a leading light in Kerry rugby. Very well done to all involved!

Killorglin Rowing Club
Castleconnell Sprints Regatta Killorglin rowers come out on top with eight wins at the Castleconnell Sprints Regatta on Saturday, the 6th of May. The event took place on the River Shannon over 500 meters 5-lane buoyed course with races taking place every 5 minutes. The first win went to Laoise Murphy and Airida Mateviciute in the Women’s Junior 12 double. The girls took a lead with three boat lengths advantage over two Castleconnell crews. The Women’s Junior 18 quad was next. The crew of Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Molly O’Grady, Anna Tyther and Katie Boyle coxed by Mara Treacy showed a very strong and dominant performance winning with half of a boat length lead over Workmen’s Rowing Club in second. Sean Houlihan won the Men’s Junior 18 single scull, taking a break from the books in preparation for his Leaving Cert examination and making a statement that he is the one to watch in 2018. Sean has another season in this age category. Killorglin girls took all Junior 16 sculling titles. The first win went to Rhiannon O’Donoghue in the Women’s Junior 16 single. Rhiannon and Anna Tyther teamed up in the Women’s Junior 16 double, winning the race convincingly. Mara Treacy and Molly O’Grady joined the pair in the Women’s Junior 16 quad, bagging a third medal in this age category. Airida Mateviciute took to the water later in the afternoon in the Women’s Junior 14 single winning the race against much older competitors. Airida’s length and feel for the boat pays dividends. The Women’s Junior 15 quad of Alanna Dolan, Airida Mateviciute, Emma Houlihan, Katie Boyle coxed by Mara Treacy were also victorious. The girls had a two boat lengths advantage over Lee, Carlow, Fermoy and Colaiste Iognaid boat clubs. Michael Sheahan and Nathan Houlihan raced their first regatta performing well in the Men’s Club double and the Men’s Club quad joined by Sean Houlihan and Michael O’Connor. Orla McCarthy, Eimear O’Donovan, Molly O’Grady and Emma Houlihan also raced well in the Women’s Club quad missing out on a win by a short margin. Big well done to all the athletes for their performances at the weekend. It was a very rewarding event for the work put into training by rowers and coaches.

Killarney Camogie Club
Our U12 girls began their league campaign against Causeway in Dr Crokes on Monday evening. It was our first game out this year and it showed especially in the first half. Causeway were quick to get on the scoreboard. The girls persevered but seemed to be a step behind through the half. The second half seen a different team emerge onto the pitch. Each ball was fought for, we were first to the ball and we started to move the ball. A superb goal from Anne Hickey put us on the scoreboard. The girls battled valiantly to chip away at Causeways lead with goals from Anne Hickey (2), Hannah Ryan and Ava Moore. Hannah Ryan

Spa Muckross Community Games
LOCAL ATHLETICS COMPETITION: Today, Friday 12th May at 6pm in the Demense field beside the playground. €2 per child. The first four children to qualify in each event this evening go forward to represent Spa Muckross in the county final in Castleisland. The county final is currently fixed for Saturday and Sunday 24th and 25th June. It is very important that you inform committee members/volunteers at the START of this evening’s event, if your child will not be available for the County final. NB your child can only qualify for one race at our local competition; this will be the FIRST race they come 1st-4th place this evening, and this will be the event that they will compete in at the County competition in June. Long jump and 200m U12 for both boys and girls is a county only event, and is confined to children not entered in another race or field event. Gold medal winners in these events at the county final do not progress to the national final. JUDO NATIONAL FINALS: Ali O’Donoghue repeated last year’s success, bringing home another bronze medal. Congratulations Ali, from all at Spa Muckross Community Games. MIXED DISTANCE RELAYS NATIONAL FINALS: Spa Muckross boys u12, Jason O’Reilly and Oisín Lynch, and u14, Eoghan O’Reilly and Jack O’Sullivan, participated in the mixed distance relays at the National Finals in Dublin last Saturday, with their Kerry team mates. Both the u12 and u14 relays came first in their heats to qualify for the finals later that day. The u12 team were just one place short of a medal in the final; our u14 boys ran with great spirit, in an extremely fast race, and no doubt this fantastic experience will make them hungry for more competition. Roll on our local competition this evening, Friday, 12th May. All roads lead to the track and field County Final from there, and who knows who might be on their way to Dublin in August! SWIMMING NATIONAL FINALS:
Treasa O’Sullivan had a great performance on Saturday. Qualification was based on times this year, and Treasa very narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

It was a memorable day for Glenflesk Community Games at the national finals in Dublin on Saturday May 6th 2017 with medals for Oran Horgan who won silver in Judo, Kathryn Ryan who won bronze with the Kerry cross-country relay team and gold for the Boys U13 Futsal team. We are so proud of them all not only for their achievements but also for how they represented Glenflesk and Kerry. Performance of the weekend goes to the U13 Futsal team of Callum Cronin, Luke Crowley, Gearoid Healy, Eoghan Kelly, Evan Lucey, Dara O’Connell, Ignatius O’Leary and Ben Switzer who defeated a strong Monaghan team (Magheracloone) in the semi-final by a
single goal, 1-0, and repeated the feat in the final against a very classy team from Kildare (St. Bridgid’s) again by a single goal. All eight of the lads played in both games and each one of them made a massive contribution to this success, not just today but in the county qualifiers, county finals and Munster finals, winning all ten of their games. Many thanks to all of the parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters who made the long journey to support all of our competitors. KERRY PHYSIOTHERAPY & REHABIITATION CENTRE EAST KERRY JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1 FINAL Dr Crokes 3-13 Rathmore 1-12 DIVISION 2 FINAL Spa 2-4 (10) Glenflesk 0-9 The East Kerry Junior League Division 2 Final between Spa and Glenflesk was played in Rathbeg, with a strong slightly cross field wind. In a low scoring first half, Spa opened the scoring with a point. Play moved from end to end with a number of wides registered. Glenflesk equalised in the second quarter with a pointed free. Then a great save by Glenflesk keeper, Felim Jacobs kept Spa at bay. However, Paul Cahill struck on the rebound for a well taken Spa goal. Glenflesk responded with a swift attack and were awarded a penalty. Spa keeper Aaron Farrell saved but the penalty had to be retaken. The same kicker faced Aaron Farrell again and the Spa goalie made another great save. As half time approached 2 Glenflesk points reduced the gap to the minimum. Half time score: Spa 1-1 Glenflesk 0-3. The game increased in intensity in the second half. Glenflesk equalised. It was tit for tat. Spa replied with a point from play. Glenflesk added 2 points before Spa struck for their second goal by Mikey Moynihan. Spa led 2-2 to 0-6. There were a scatter of points and Glenflesk levelled the game with 8 minutes remaining – 2-2 to 0-8. In an exciting finish, Spa found the target with 2 points . In the last kick of the game, Glenflesk blasted the ball goalwards, but it rose over the bar and Spa won on a final score of Spa 2-4 (10) Glenflesk 0-9. East Region Division 1 Final Rathmore 4-12 Dr Crokes. 1-06 Home team, Rathmore, put in a strong performance, in a game played in a good spirit, to land the spoils over
a gallant Dr Crokes team, in the MD O’Shea East Region U16 League Division 1 Final on Monday evening. It was level pegging in the first quarter. Dr Crokes opened the scoring with a Michael Lenihan point inside the first minute. Rathmore responded quickly when Cathal Ryan notched a goal and a point from play. Sean Magann then added two points from frees for Dr Crokes – 1-1 to 0-3. A Rathmore purple patch, in the second quarter, put distance between the sides with a Ben O’Connor goal in between two David Dineen points, while Cathal Ryan added his third point of the half -2-4 to 0-3. Dr Crokes rallied and forced a great save from Rathmore goalkeeper Ian O Connor, then after a great run Krystian Komosa blasted a goal to the Rathmore net. With the break approaching, David Dineen steadied his side with a point before James Darmody goaled after a scramble in the goalmouth. This left Rathmore leading 3-5 to 1-3 at half time. On resumption, Dr Crokes substitute Terry Sparling traded scores with Darragh Rahilly, before David Dineen and James Darmody extended the Rathmore lead. Rathmore wing forward Aaron Cronin then goaled and further points were added by Cathal Ryan (2) and James Darmody. Dan Murphy also added a fantastic point off the outside of his boot after a strong run. Dr Crokes, to their credit, tried hard until the end, had second half points from Sean Magann and Terry Sparling but it was not to be their night.

Kilcummin GAA
SENIOR FOOTBALL CASTLEISLAND MART CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Dingle 2-16 Kilcummin 0-10. Played in Killorglin on Sunday last Dingle proved much too strong for our lads despite a very determined effort. We were treated in the first half to some fine long range points from Philip Casey and Chris O’Leary but still trailed at half time by 1- 8 to 0-6 with Kevin McCarthy kicking two frees. In The second half we added three further points from play courtesy of Paul O’Riordan, Noel Duggan and Mikey O’Shea. Brendan Kealy brought off some fine saves as Dingle threatened but Paul Geaney netted from a penalty to effectively kill off the game. Brendan actually saved Geaneys first attempt but the referee ordered it to be retaken much to the annoyance of players and supporters. Kilcummins players lost their discipline thereafter and received two red cards, a black and a number of yellows as their frustration grew. At the end Dingle well deserved their victory while we now face Kerins O’Rahillys in a final effort to maintain our senior status for a 21st year. Killarney Legion
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL Killarney Legion 1-13 Kenmare Shamrocks 3-12 No complaints about the result of this semi-final as a more determined and fluid Kenmare side won eventually by 5pts.From the off they showed an ability to free up players which put the Legion backs under continuous pressure. Some poor shooting cost them early on but just as the Legion bagan to settle they were caught for a goal which swung the balance back in the Shamrocks favour, indeed they weren’t to trail again from that point onwards as their confidence grew. There were individual displays from the likes of Shaun Keane,Billy McGuire and James O Donoghue but the normal team cohesion was sadly missing this particular day. A brief Legion rally saw Denis Sheahan punch the ball to the net after what was a rare piece of smooth combined play by the forwards but Kenmare persisted and once again picked up the challenge to add a third goal and ease comfortably on to the final. A timely heads up for the seniors with the same opposition coming next Sunday to Derreen for the first round game of the county championship. However the form so far this year shows that the Legion squad has a lot more in them and hopefully they’ll repeat their high tempo team performances that they’ve turned in up to now. FIXTURE Killarney Legion V Kenmare Shamrocks,Derreen,Sunday 14th.May At 1.30 p.m. All support greatly appreciated for this very important fixture. KERRY U17 Well done to Darren Looney,Michaél Devlin along with Barry Slattery who were part of the Kerry u17 squad that beat Tipperary in the Munster semi-final. Not only has he a keen eye for goal himself but Michaél is not averse to setting them up either as he duly obliged when introduced. ANOTHER SEM SUCCESS Well done to the Sem on winning the Russell Cup, defeating Mercy Mounthawk Tralee on a scoreline of 4-13 to 5-05.U16 Girls News Glenflesk 4-9 Killarney Legion 5-9 On Thursday night the U16 Girls travelled the short distance out to Glenflesk for their final game in the initial round of the league. Plenty of school room discussions had taken place about the match as most of the girls attended secondary school in Killarney so great anticipation existed pre match. The pace of the game was very telling on both sides at half time and the dry warm conditions took a toll on energy reserves. As the second half progressed the Legion managed to

Some superb fielding by the Legion girls managed to gain the momentum and a full three points separated the sides in the dying minutes. Glenflesk pushed forward but the fast pace of the game was taking its toll and our girls having come from behind a few times in the game were not going to give up and kept the gap until the final whistle . Lotto 7th May 2017 Numbers drawn were 8, 10, 12, 13. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €15,150. U-12 Football Fossa under 12 boys hosted Milltown/ Castlemaine in Fossa on Sunday evening, Chris Doody contributed with a fine poacher’s goal while the Fossa defence closed out the game to secure a hard fought 3-8 to 2-7 victory. The B game was another very close encounter, with both teams evenly matched they produced an entertaining, free scoring game of football. Fossa trailed by 2 points at half time but
they dug deep in the second half and finished out winners on a score of 5-13 to 5-09. Strong performances were given by all the players throughout the team, Jack Cronin, Gavin O’Leary and Abbie Murphy gave Fossa a strong midfield platform coupled with surging runs forward which resulted in several scores. Tadhg O’Sullivan, Mark Shanahan, Rory Clancy, Sean O’Donovan and Rachel Wallace combined well in the forwards while strong defensive displays were given by Sean Dennehy, Ronan Daly, Alicia Cummins and Alison Butler. Our under 10 boys had a very busy week of football in Fossa playing matches with Listry, Milltown/Castlemaine and Kilcummin. We were all able to field 2 teams and we had some very sporting games with all the skills of the game on display. It was also great to see some of the U8’s mixing in with the big boys. A big thank you to Listry, Milltown/Caslemaine and Kilcummin for making the trip to Fossa. Coiste Na nOg A great crowd of boys and girls, along with parents, proudly paraded in their Fossa colours through the streets of Killarney to celebrate 50 years of Coiste na nÓg. U14s: On Wednesday last our u14 team played Renard in their Feile D semi final in Glenbeigh. In a game where Currow wasted plenty of opportunities to where Renard had taken them Currow proved to have the edge in this tight contest winning on a score line of Currow 3-04 to Renard’s 3-03. After their semi final victory it was onto Farranfore to play Desmond’s in the final. In another tense encounter Currow won the final by a single point 1-09 to Desmond’s 1-08.
