News Briefs ... Editor's View Nurses Night In Let’s Speak Up For Kerry Accents With HeartBeat Words: Eve Kelliher

KERRY jokes were big when I was a child. But I had thought people’s sensibilities might have matured in the meantime. Nope, I was wrong. Last Sunday the nation’s tongues started to wag in earnest after a west Kerry farmer appeared on RTÉ News highlighting his plight following his discovery that 45 of his sheep were missing. But were people worried about his loss of earnings? Oh no. What got everyone going was the man’s unaffected – if strong – Kerry accent, which provoked much mirth on social media and indeed in some news reports, both at home and abroad. Headlines like “Ewe won’t believe your ears – awe at Kerry accent!” or, more annoyingly, “Can you translate what this Irish farmer is saying?” ruled the following day in the wake of Sean Mac an tSíthigh’s interview with farmer Mikey Joe O’Shea on Six One. The story was a serious one and concerned a major sheep theft on Mount Brandon. Colourful asides in Mikey Joe O’Shea’s rapid delivery included how the crime seems to have taken place under the gaze of a full moon. To any self-styled sophisticates who choose to poke fun at regional accents, I can only say I would far prefer an unaffected accent like the above to the absolutely

NURSES Anna O’Donoghue and Anne O’Brien will be at the HeartBeat meeting this month with tips on wellbeing and to answer any questions on health care. The meeting will start at 8pm on Monday, April 24, at the Serenity Centre, St Anne’s Road, Killarney. There will be a blood pressure clinic beforehand from 7.15pm to 8pm sharp. All are welcome to this free event.

repulsive warblings that echo across the country today. Up until relatively recently, these embarrassing, fake accents were limited to a select few locations. Now, not only have they have flooded the airwaves but they can be heard on every high street in every province. These range from Mid-Atlantic or twangs to The Only Way Is Essex-inspired exclamations like “Shut up!” to those faux-Australian rising inflections emanating from individuals who have never actually visited the Antipodes but may have caught a couple of episodes of Home and Away over the years.

AGSI Conference

Debate Over Proposal On Filming And Photographing Gardaí Disappointment That Minister Did Not Attend AGSI Conference THERE was disappointment that Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald did not attend the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors conference this week. A spokesperson for Ms Fitzgerald said the Minister had hoped to attend the conference but this was not possible. He said she had Cabinet sub-committee meetings that afternoon ahead of Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. He added that she would be in the Dáil on Wednesday for Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin motions on the Garda Commissioner. The Tánaiste faced further criticism after it emerged she attended a local Fine Gael branch meeting despite claiming she was too busy to address the annual AGSI conference. DURING the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors annual delegate conference in Killarney this week, some members of the AGSI said they have found their personal details placed on social media. The National Union of Journalists has expressed concern at a motion debated by AGSI at the event, in the INEC, calling for the photographing or filming of gardaí on duty to be made a criminal offence. Acting General Secretary of the NUJ Séamus Dooley has written to the AGSI saying the move “could have grave implications for the right to freedom of expression”. “The motion, as I understand it, could also criminalise the taking of photographs of State occasions and the photographing of public buildings such as Leinster House, for example,”

he said. AGSI President Garda Sergeant Antoinette Cunningham said some members “have found themselves on placed on some social media sites, their private, domestic lives, home addresses and members of their family have been referred to” in a way that is not connected in any way to the duties that the members were carrying out. She said: “I think there is a risk element attached to that, I think it’s unfair and I think our membership are anxious that some system would be put in place to protect their private lives while they are doing their duty.” Sgt Cunningham did say that there is “a justifiable use” of filming gardaí that does not steer into their private or domestic life. She said gardaí in the course of their work have to be accountable and be

Are You The Owner Of $100,000 In US Bank? Words: Eve Kelliher A US TWINNING association is keen to trace the owner of a considerable sum of money, Killarney Advertiser has learned. An amount believed to be in excess of $100,000 could rightfully belong to someone living in Killarney, according to the Sister Cities Association of Springfield, Illinois. “The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office has in their possession a large sum of money, possibly belonging to a resident of Killarney, Ireland,” said Janet Kenney of the Sister Cities Association of Springfield, Illinois. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office realized that Springfield has a sister city/twin city relationship with Killarney and so Ms Kenney got in touch with Sean Counihan, chairman, Killarney Town Twinning Association. The amount of money in question may be in excess of $100,000.00, added Ms Kenney. “Apparently this money was abandoned/forgotten in an Illinois bank account and has been seized by the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. It is our desire to assist Gerard Melia, possibly of Killarney, Ireland, in reclaiming his money,” added Ms Kenney. “Can you assist me in locating Mr Gerard

Melia? I can provide Mr Melia with the appropriate contact information. If there is proof that he is no longer living, the closest surviving relative might be an appropriate heir. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.” Mr Counihan can be contacted on counihansean@gmail.com or Ms Kenney on wejaweja@aol.com

music, a recitation of an original published short story, as well as the All-Ireland winning Healy-Rae-themed comedic short performance from Banteer Macra, and a dance performance by the recent Irish Cancer Society Strictly Come Dancing winners. Tickets will be available at the door.

Tributes Paid To Former Town And County Manager KILLARNEY and Kerry were deeply saddened following the death of former town and county manager Paddy D’Arcy on Monday. Mr D’Arcy, Killarney, died in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin and was laid to rest on Thursday in Mount St Oliver Cemetery in his native Limerick city. While a member of Limerick Corporation, where he served as housing officer, Mr D’Arcy played rugby for the Young Munster club and in later years he became a referee for International games. Mr D’Arcy was appointed assistant county manager in Kerry in July 1981. He also served as town manager in Killarney during this period. Mr D’Arcy was appointed Kerry county manager in February 1992. During his tenure the Killarney urban renewal scheme and Kerry County Enterprise Board were established. Mr D’Arcy retired in 1997. Former town councillor Sean O’Grady, who served as mayor on several occasions while Mr D’Arcy was town manager, described his “knowledgeable approach” as hugely beneficial to the town. “Paddy was one of the few man-

agers who lived in Killarney and I think that gave him an edge, because he knew what was happening in the area,” Mr O’Grady told Killarney Advertiser. Mr D’Arcy left some wonderful legacies, added Mr O’Grady. “He was instrumental in changing the ethos of signage in Killarney at a time when we were in danger of heading in to a ‘honky-tonk’ situation,” said Mr O’Grady. “Paddy was a fair, decent and honest man.” Kerry mayor Cllr Michael O’Shea and Kerry County Council’s chief executive Moira Murrell described Mr D’Arcy as “a devoted public servant who served the county well in many roles”. “He had a wonderful vision for the development of Kerry and he leaves a legacy of many infrastructural and community improvements,” they stated. Mr D’Arcy is mourned by his wife Miriam, sons Frank, Mark and Andrew and daughter Adrienne, his seven grandchildren, daughtersin-law, brother Louis, sister-in-law Helen, brothers-in-law Fr Gerard OFM, Willie, Dermot and Noel, relatives and friends. Mr D’Arcy was predeceased by his brother Tommy and sister Ann.

Kerry Minors Set Up

Semi-Final Date

DEFENDING ELECTRIC IRELAND All-Ireland minor champions Kerry retained their sterling winning record at the U18 grade with a 13-point victory over Clare on Wednesday. This was Kerry’s 19th consecutive win at minor level and keeps them undefeated in the grade since their 2013 All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Tyrone. Fiachra Clifford set up and team captain David Clifford for the game’s first goal after five minutes, and two minutes later, Donal O’Sullivan scored their second to put them 2-3 to 0-0 in front. The stage is now set for a Munster semi-final with Cork next month in Páirc Uí Rinn. Limerick join Kerry and Cork in the semi-finals, while the Déise go into the first play-off round where they take on Clare. Scorers for Kerry: Donal O’Sullivan (1-6, 4f), David Clifford (1-4, 1 ‘45’), Brian Friel, Fiachra Clifford, Barry Mahony, Donnachadh O’Sullivan, Eddie Horan and Niall Donohoe (0-1 each) Scorers for Clare: Gearoid Cahill (1-0), Gavin Cooney (0-3, 1f), Dermot Coughlan (0-2, 1f) and Diarmuid Ryan (0-1)

Sun Smiles On Sixth County Clean-Up

Words: Eve Kelliher Photos: Valerie O’Sullivan THE glorious sunshine ensured conditions were the best yet for the annual Kerry County Clean-up day on Saturday. Volunteers arrived in their droves for the sixth annual event, which is facilitated by KWD Recycling with the help of Kerry County Council and tidy town committees in Kerry and West Cork. The county clean-up began in 2011 and was the first of its kind in Ireland, with many counties now following Kerry’s example due to its success. Attendance was at an all-time high this year with over 5000 volunteers signing up all over Kerry alone and 23,000 KWD red bags distributed between them. This year the county clean-up was also extended into West Cork by KWD Recycling where it was well received and many attended on the day cleaning many roads which included the main road from Clonakilty to Bantry. KWD staff, family and friends were again on hand this year calling to all the various groups to offer support and also helped pick litter off some roads in West Kerry. A great day was had by all who attended the initiative all across Kerry and West Cork and the benefits are immediately noticeable with a cleaner and

greener environment that is visually more welcoming coming into the important tourist season. “Many early reports from groups indicate that the amount of litter on our roads this year was down on other years which hopefully means that people are getting the message and throwing less litter out on our roads which is great,” said Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling. One of the most noticeable contributors to litter along the roads yet again this year was plastic drinks bottles, drinks cans and tea/coffee cups which were constantly strewn all along our roads. There was also the usual crisp and chocolate bar wrappers and plastic bags. “Organisers would appeal to everyone in the county to stay conscious of how we dispose of our waste when driving, and ensure that all waste is disposed of at home and not along our roads,” said Mr O’Reilly. “The organisers wish to take this opportunity to thank the over 5000 volunteers right across the county who signed up this year and participated. The mammoth task of collecting all these bags began on Monday by KWD Recycling and will take over a week to collect from the different collection points that have been arranged all over Kerry.”

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

We Need To Talk About Pedestrian Matters

High Street V College Street I WAS sent around the pubs in Killarney last week at lunchtime to find out people’s attitudes to drinking a few and driving – or whether people would abstain altogether if driving. The difference between the streets reminded of the Tops of the Town, when streets and parishes and businesses would compete against each other, small spaces but with very different personalities. These were the days before tourism became the principal occupation and when people had regular hours and had Sundays and Mondays off. I pondered this with a well-known, shall we say person in uniform, whom I met in the Glebe car park, and who knows more about the town and its history than most of us have forgotten. The difference is the lanes – old Killarney moved from the lanes and settled at the top of High Street, and this atmosphere prevails in the businesses still, he said.

From The Parochial To The Global THE council is to contact Irish Rail to investigate the re-opening of the pedestrian access tunnel from Lewis Road under the bypass to the busy playgrounds and residential area of Ballydribbeen. It follows a motion by Killarney area’s only woman councillor, Maura Healy-Rae, who says it’s “ridiculous” people – women, children, teenagers and men and elderly – have had to endure the crossing of the bustling bypass road with its “constant flow of traffic” when an alternative was available. The underground tunnel has been closed with a number of years. One hopes Ms Healy-Rae will turn her benign and practical womanly gaze at other areas in Killarney, since God knows the men have had enough time looking on. Take the Beech Road which runs through two busy car parks and is a major shopping area since the time the magnificent town hall ballroom was sold by a cash-strapped council to be turned into a Quinnsworth store selling washing powder and garden compost. This has no pedestrian crossing! Nor do I remember any move towards providing one. Women have been running the gauntlet of that uneven surface trying to steer shopping trolleys with 30 years. Prominent people have been knocked down there, but still no one is “cross” about it. The much-lauded entrance to the demesne area of Killarney House, by the Monsignor O’Flaherty monument, is another treacherous spot. I have seen couples and families jaywalk here…terrified…of necessity to get through the constant traffic.

One must figure out the maze to get from a to b

The junction at the top of High Street is part of some kind of elaborate puzzle, surely? One must figure out the maze to get from a to b. . All it lacks is a few box hedges and we could have medieval magic. But the positioning of some of the scant few pedestrian crossings has to be called into question. Whose bright idea was it to put the pedestrian crossing between the cinema and the Mission Road, smack in the middle of two roundabouts, when the more natural position would fall to the right towards the East Avenue Hotel? And take the other side – the crossing there is completely wrong-sided. You only have to sit in the traffic and observe the desperation of people trying to cross from the Plaza to know that the people who implement these things are not driving, not to mind walking, around Killarney and they are certainly not doing the shopping! And when it comes to two wheels, the position is curious. We have motion after motion and call after call for cycleways – but when the cycleways are built, why aren’t they used? The Fossa Way is a case in point. In theory there is no need to risk your life and motorists’ temper all the way from New Street to the New Line Cross. In practice though the safer option is all too often left to one side. Or is it time to distinguish between cyclists who want to get from a to b or who just go for a cycle and sports cyclists who are in a different league altogether? It strikes me that what this latter group need is some kind of off-road arena that would suit the light bikes. They need not and should not be on the main roads.

HIGH STREET v College Street is one aspect of Killarney – and the sense of two different towns. But there is another Killarney running alongside. It is “Kosmopolitan” Killarney. And when I say this most people will think tourists. Wrong! A typical Saturday now for some women in Killarney is either a visit to the Polish hairdresser or Polish beauty salon or a drop into the French café for genuine French pastries and coffee. My only concern about all this is the lack of official voice the new Irish have. The Polish for instance make up most of the new Irish in Killarney and are involved in business as well as employment, they are involved in the Catholic Church, many are homeowners here and are the parents of many of the school-going children in Killarney. It strikes me that some effort should be made by the body politic to open formal channels to get concerns of the Polish and other communities amongst us heard and aired. Take the group we share a common language with (mind you after that west Kerry sheep stealing item during the week I will qualify that with some of us): the English. We also have a substantial English population living in Killarney – and where is the evidence their fears about Brexit are being voiced and heard? They must surely be worried about pensions, currency and status. We have at least in a limited way, education and talking groups for asylum seekers and refugee populations in Killarney. But is it not time we created a forum for the new Irish?

8 Good Reasons why I should provide for my Retirement through a Pension Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Retirement Planning Adviser, Denis Murphy, Premier Financial Services, discusses why funding a pension is so important.

1. WHAT WILL THE STATE PENSION BE IN THE FUTURE? The State Pension (Contributory) personal full rate for a single person is currently €233.30 per week. • Demographic changes in Ireland, will put pressure on government finances as the cost of state pensions and health care for the elderly increase.

2.

STATE PENSION AGE INCREASING TO 68 Legislation is now in place that will increase the age at which the state pension becomes payable in the future to age 68 based on your date of birth.

3. LIFE EXPECTANCY

Life expectancy for those born in Ireland is now 78 years for males and 82 for females

(Source: CSO 2013).

Your retirement savings may need to last for up to 30 years after you finish working.

4. INCOME TAX RELIEF Income tax relief is still available on contributions made personally to a pension. This relief is available on up to 40% of the contribution for a top rate tax payer, or 20% for a standard rate tax payer. For a free initial consultation call Denis now on

5. TAX FREE

RETIREMENT LUMP SUM Tax free retirement lump sums are available when taking retirement benefits. You can take 25% of your pension fund as a retirement lump sum or with a company pension you can instead choose to take a retirement lump sum of up to one-and-a half times your final salary, depending on the length of time employed. The maximum total tax-free amount is €200,000. A retirement lump sum of between €200,000 and €500,000 is subject to standardrate income tax, currently 20%.

6. APPROVED RETIREMENT FUND (ARF) The ARF option has been extended to all members of Defined Contribution (DC) company pensions. The ARF option gives what many individuals want in terms of • control over income drawdown • control over investment options 7. People Power Raises Over €80,000 To Save Kerry Family From Eviction Comment

ISN’T it time that victims of the tracker mortgage scandal were given a voice? Irish banks have paid out more than €120 million in the past two years in redress and compensation to mortgage customers who were denied a tracker rate, the Governor of the Central Bank Philip Lane told the Oireachtas finance committee this month. In March, the Central Bank said 9,900 customer accounts had been identified as affected by lenders as part of its tracker mortgage examination. The governor said he could not provide a lender-by-lender breakdown of customers and the redress paid to them for legal reasons. But he said lenders had “failed their customers” by denying them tracker rates. Some customers lost their homes as a result of not being offered the correct tracker rate. This scenario was given an all-too-human face

Words: Eve Kelliher

over the past week. Outrage at the plight of a widowed father-of-five translated into cash and support for the Flavin family, with donations in the region of €80,000 flooding in in a bid to save the family home of Ray Flavin from repossession. Mr Flavin’s wife Patricia died of a heart attack last January, leaving behind her husband and five children Aoife, 17, Caoimhe, 11, Oisin, 6, and fouryear-old twins Fiachra and Bronagh. This tragedy came after the family had been served with an eviction notice on their Ballybunion home. As the case was made public, two friends of Mr Flavin set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the family. As tens of thousands of euro began flooding in over the course of 48 hours, his friends decided to raise the target to €120,000 — the value of the family’s mortgage.

Mr Flavin, a bus driver, described the financial support from strangers, which came in the form of more than 2,000 donations, as “mindblowing”. At one point, as the funds reached €55,255, one supporter posted on Facebook: “People power just took over! It will not bring Ray’s wife back but it ensures the family’s future”. The case was raised in the Dáil by Kerry Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris who said: “In January of this year, a woman by the name of Trish Flavin died suddenly, leaving five children. I would argue and her husband would argue very strongly that this was a consequence of them being victim of the tracker mortgage scandal.” People power is to be valued. But surely the fact that the situation had to come to this point should force us to question the whole scenario that has arisen from the tracker mortgage scandal? Pic: Ray Flavin, centre.

Have You Really Booked Your Flight? Comment

Words: Cormac Casey

LAST Monday a video went viral on social media showing a man being dragged from a United Airlines aircraft due to depart Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. At first glance, maybe the man was drunk or disorderly or worse, a terrorist, given the actions of the police. The truth is ridiculous. He was randomly selected along with four other passengers to be removed as the airline was trying to make room for four of its employees on the Sunday evening flight to Kentucky because the airline over booked. Apparently airlines are allowed to sell more tickets than seats and routinely do so as some people don’t show up. However this man did show up and was invited to board the aircraft by staff. The manner in which they dealt with the situation thereafter makes for disturbing viewing. Furthermore, they defended their actions by saying that the man left them with no choice. “The man handled it wrong,” a

spokesman for the airline said. “The police were kind of put in a bad spot.” “A bad spot” – can we return to the greed that led to this incident in the first place? Airlines are allowed to put shareholders’ dividends over common decency and duty of care. This greed is supported by airline regulations. What is wrong with that thinking? The events surrounding the extraction of this man from the aircraft is a disturbing reflection on how we, as innocent consumers, are treated by the corporate world. We are always led to believe that our consumer voice can always be heard; this man’s voice was clearly heard screaming as he was dragged from the aircraft. Whether or not you are a fan of social media, in this case it is our only consumer voice. Initially the airline stood behind its actions but has since issued an apology after its share price plummeted. See what I mean, money talks.

‘Deeply Worrying’ Rock Fall On Skellig Michael

‘Good Friday Alcohol Ban May Seem Archaic, But Surely We Can Do Without Drink For One Day Of The Year?’ Comment

THERE has been a significant rock fall at the Skellig Michael heritage site, the Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed. A large amount of debris was left scattered after falling from the upper slopes on to a road on the island. The Unesco World Heritage Site rose to world prominence after the latest instalment of the Star Wars film series was shot there. The OPW confirmed the damage was discovered last Friday when staff arrived at the island to carry out pre-season maintenance works and safety checks. The rocks, shale and other debris materials were discovered on the island’s Lighthouse Road, close to the accommodation huts. These buildings are maintained on the island for use during the summer by the OPW’s conservation work staff.

ZOMBIES in a post-apocalyptic world was what came to mind of when I spotted the frenzied queues snaking around the block several years ago. I am not exaggerating when I say they were all but foaming at the mouth as they awaited the Kerry venue’s opening at midnight to circumvent the Good Friday pub closure tradition. Whether you are religious or not, it makes you think: Surely we can do without alcohol for just one day of the year? And it’s not just teenagers who are afflicted by psychological “withdrawal symptoms” at the prospect of 24 hours on the dry. We all know of people who specifically organise alcohol-fuelled parties at home that night simply because pubs are closed. No matter that they probably wouldn’t be bothered drinking if it was a normal Friday, it is the childlike idea that just because it is forbidden many feel they have to rebel. While pubs across Ireland will stay closed this Good Friday, there have been a slew of calls to change what has been referred to as a “dated practice”.

As part of the senators’ Intoxicating Liquor (Amendment) Bill 2017, from next year the sale of alcohol in all licensed premises will be allowed on Good Friday across the country. This is because the senators are seeking to alter the 1927 Act of the same name, which introduced the religious-based ban in the first years of the Irish State. Vintners and publicans have noted that closing up shop at the start of Easter weekend sends a negative signal to visitors and is detrimental to business. Independent senator Billy Lawless recently said Irish pubs are an “intrinsic part” of our tourism offering and that we’ve outgrown this ban. Granted, it seems unfair on hen and stag parties and the like travelling from overseas to enjoy a weekend in Ireland and I do take on-board the point that tourists might be nonplussed at the pub closure. But seriously – what does it say about us as a society that we can’t do without drink for one day of the year?

Taxpayers’ Money Gone Down The Drain THE water charges regime came to an end yesterday as the Dáil voted to accept the report of the water services committee. Before they squandered taxpayers’ hard-earned cash on this farce, would it not have made sense for our elected representatives to have formulated a realistic plan two years ago (shock, horror at the very idea

of being so organised)? This has created so much public upheaval and now it is believed that up to €1 billion has gone down the drain in wasted costs on water. Right2Water’s Brendan Ogle said €500m had been spent on domestic water meters, with almost another half-billion gone on Irish Water.

Breath-Test And Traffic Conviction Scandals Update TDs have voted to send Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan’s answers on the phantom breath tests and traffic convictions scandals to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety amid concerns she is giving false information to the Dáil. The cross-party justice committee agreed to the move after claims Ms O’Sullivan’s latest evidence includes contradictions about what happened. As part of ongoing concerns about her public evidence last month, the justice committee last week told Ms O’Sullivan to respond to a series of written questions clarifying her version of what happened in relation to the dual scandals. The responses to 27 questions were provided to the committee on Tuesday evening and discussed in private by TDs and senators on the group on Wednesday. Amid reports of almost one million phantom breath tests between 2011 and 2016 and the near 14,700 false road traffic convictions during the same period were not used “as a performance indicator” by gardaí to claim overtime.

It was established by leading hairstylist Sandra Evans over six years ago. “The salon has grown and grown since I opened Allure in February 2011. I opened in Plunkett Street with one employee which has now blossomed to eight,” said Sandra. “We deliver all services with the highest standards of hairdressing and to ensure this we complete many courses throughout the year – we believe as a hairdresser you are never finished learning and the day you do is the day of your retirement.” Consultation is the key to a successful service, adds Sandra. “We ensure to do full consultation with all aspects of hairdressing from a blow-dry to colour service

Singing Out For Children’s Hospital Concern At Closure Of Central European THE Rose of Tralee Class of 2016 is to release charity single in aid of CMRF Crumlin (Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital). The Rose of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney and Rose Escort of the Year John Slowey, along with their fellow 2016 Roses and Rose Escorts will launch a charity campaign to raise much needed funds for CMRF Crumlin next Thursday at 7.30pm in SAMs Bar, 36 Dawson Street, Dublin. John Slowey’s little cousin, James McGowan (5), went through chemotherapy in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin to treat an aggressive malignant “Ewings” sarcoma growing in his shoulder blade. James’s first course of chemo would last over four months and in February 2016 he went through surgery which saw the removal of his shoulder blade.

In September 2016 after a further six months of chemotherapy James’ CT and MRI showed no sign of sarcoma. His treatment was overseen by consultant oncologist Cormack Owens. James will attend the launch of the charity single “It’s Time” which was recorded by 129 Roses and Rose Escorts who took part in the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival. An official video of the single will be screened on the night while the song will be available to download from iTunes from Friday, April 21, with pre-orders available from Friday, April 14. This event is proudly supported by the Rose of Tralee International Festival. John Drummey, Rose of Tralee International Festival, Via email

University, Budapest

I WOULD like to express concern at the Hungarian government and Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s new laws which could force the closure of one of the region’s top universities - Central European University, Budapest. Fine Gael are members of the European People’s Party. Any activity that will close down a university is unacceptable. It is an attack on some of the most fundamental of all European values - freedom of thought, research

and speech, an essential part of our European identity. We will defend this at any cost. Our group, the EPP, is demanding that the EU Commission assess the education law of Hungary and that once the Commission has come to an assessment, we expect the Hungarian Government to comply with it fully. Ann Marie And Tara Poised To Put The Kettle On Ann Marie O’Leary, Anniemai O’Donoghue and Tara O’Donoghue.

ALL are invited to a coffee morning in aid of the South Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland on Saturday, April 22. Two local ladies, Ann Marie O’Leary and Tara O’Donoghue, are putting the kettle on for the event, which takes place in the Killarney Royal Hotel from 9.30am to 12pm. Both have links with the local branch of MS Ireland. Ann Marie’s mother in-law, the late Mary O’Leary of Countess Road, passed away in 2011 and Tara’s mother, the late Maire O’Connor of Woodlawn

Park, had multiple sclerosis. “The coffee morning is a small way of giving something back to a local organisation who do so much good work for the individuals and families burdened with this progressive debilitating disease,” said Ann Marie. She and Tara promise plenty of delicious treats and an exciting raffle. “We hope the local community will come out and support this fun social event and we can help to raise some much needed funds for MS Ireland - South Kerry Branch,” said Tara.

‘It Is Only A Matter Of Time Until Earth Experiences An Asteroid Impact’ Trevor O’Donoghue reflects on the repercussions of space rock impacts and explosions EVERY so often scientists announce that a large space rock or asteroid will pass within a couple of hundred thousand kilometres of Earth. The tabloid press proclaim a near miss and that we were lucky to dodge Armageddon. Headline-grabbing stuff it may be, but the truth of the matter is, that it is only a matter of time until the Earth experiences an impact event when one of these asteroids makes it through our atmosphere and explodes with tremendous force creating significant damage. This happened 65 million of years ago when a 10km rock smashed into the Earth, throwing up a huge cloud of dust and debris that darkened the planet. This resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs and three quarters of the species alive at the time. Good news for us however, as it eventually led to humans evolving. In 1908, a few kilometres above a remote area of Siberia known as Tunguska, an asteroid somewhere between 50 and 200 metres across, exploded and flattened some 2000 square kilometres of forest. Luckily no one was killed, as the explosion occurred miles from any civilisation. It would have been a different scenario had the explosion occurred above a large urban development. In February 2013, a 20-metre ball of rock exploded 30 km above Chelyabinsk in

Pic: NASA

Russia. The resulting shockwave created some minor structural damage and blew out many windows leading to 1500 injuries. This event was record by numerous sources, including many car dash cameras. Impacts of space rocks happen on a daily basis and many thousands of space rocks make it onto our planet every year, most of them small and insignificant. A shooting star or meteor is a small piece

of space rock burning up as it enters our atmosphere. According to NASA, once a year an object the size of a car hits Earth’s atmosphere and burns up creating an impressive fireball. Every 2000 years or so an object the size of a football field comes knocking and causes major damage. Finally, every few million years or so, an object large enough to threaten our civilisation comes along.

NASA have a monitoring programme and track over 15000 near Earth asteroids. We could probably deal with a potential impactor given enough time, but it is the ones that sneak up on us that are the worry. So until we have a rapid response plan, ready to go at a moment’s notice, here’s hoping that the only meteors we see are shooting stars as they light up our night sky.

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels

JOHN 20:1-9: In some ways this gospel is a difficult one for prayer. It only presents a part of the story. The disciples are in a state of shock and suffering from a traumatic loss. Jesus, the one in whom they had placed so much hope, has been murdered and buried. Then, another shock – the body of Jesus is missing. Have you had experiences in which one tragedy or crisis follows quickly after another? What was that like for you? How did you cope? What, or who, sustained you then? Mary and Peter, and possibly others, came and discovered that the tomb was empty. They are left in a state of bewilderment “for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead”. Have you been in that kind of situation, faced with events you cannot explain, events which have dashed your hopes in another person, or in God? What has that been like for you? Yet in spite of the lack of explanation, the beloved disciple “saw and believed”. Have there been times when others have done something that you could not understand, and which they could not explain at the time and yet you believed that all was not as it seemed? Times when you decided to trust in spite of the evidence? Have there been times when others have shown this kind of faith in you, and all you could say was ‘trust me’? Have there been times in your relationship with God when you have felt that you were faced with an empty tomb and still you believed? Where have you found life in such experiences? John Byrne, OSA, Veritas

Easter Is A Verb

CHRISTIANS are Easter people. What that means to me is that we are dynamic: always growing, changing, moving, and engaging. Even those of us who cannot be “in motion” physically – because of necessary employment, family responsibilities or health issues – can experience the interior “movements” of the soul. Every day the Risen Christ invites us to move, to allow the breaking open that happens in a heart that is open to God and to all that divine love brings to us. We sense the inner movement, we listen to the voice of the Spirit, we pay attention to even fleeting emotions and responses that can be, in God’s hands, tools for our ongoing creation.’ (Vinita Hampton Wright, from her blog “Days of Deepening Friendship”) Neither Peter nor John come to believe in the Resurrection without enduring confusion and uncertainty. But out of the confusion comes clarity. The empty tomb can only mean that Jesus is truly alive – raised and transformed by the Father. If Jesus is truly risen, then so are we. As we were one with him in his suffering, so are we now one with him in his risen joy. Alleluia! Sacred Space for Lent 2017 – Messenger Publications

The Deep End

IN THE Gospel Mary Magdalene is highlighted as the woman who is the first witness of the resurrection. Mary and the two disciples must have been very confused and upset as they tried to understand what had happened to Jesus’ body. Reading this story can bring many emotions for us: fear and confusion at death, or even a feeling of euphoria and joy at the realisation that death is not the end. If we have lost a loved one, we might feel comforted in the knowledge that we will be reunited with them once more. Jesus comes into situations of despair, disappointment and doubt and, as with Mary after this incident, comes in the form of a stranger, gently calling her name. The Risen Lord seems to meet us in familiar territory, where we least expect it. We might ask the Lord today for the strength and courage to allow him to break into our lives once more, to help us to be free of whatever it is that causes “death” in our lives, to help us to let go, to be open to recognising him in our most painful moments and in the most familiar places. In the words of Joyce Rupp: “God of openness, of life and of resurrection, come into this Easter season and bless me. Look around at the tight, dead spaces of my heart. Bring your gentle but firm love.…Open me. Open me. Open me. For it is only then I will grow and change, for it is only then that I will be transformed. For it is only then that I will know how it is. To be in the moment of rising from the dead.” Jane Mellet, Veritas

Grace Notes Creativity Can Build Bridges Musical talent is like a passport that will take you anywhere, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

THE world we live in today is one with so many divisions. We have been divided by war and hate and we are afraid to travel for fear of attack. This will inevitably result in us, as a people, not sharing our talents and our creations. Without the fusion of people’s artistic influences art may cease to grow. I have always been amazed at how something like music can bridge the gap between different countries and also between people who, if it weren’t for music, would have very little in common. I recently worked with a group of young Italian students whose English was quite poor. This made communication very difficult. What truly amazed me, and the other teachers, was how these students were able to sing an

Ed Sheeran song, in English, simply because they loved it! Their drive was not to have perfect English. They were driven by the need to express themselves. While I was studying music in college we were always told just how important it is for us to understand every single word we are singing, no matter what language we sing in. It then does not matter what language our audience speaks, they will understand the sentiment in the song because we as singers know what we are saying. A few years ago I was singing a song in German and afterwards a gentleman approached me and said, “I do not speak German but I understood every word you sang because of your portrayal of the song.” In a world where bridges are falling and walls are being erected, please keep singing. Keep creating. Our creativity is our passport to anywhere in the world. •

Garden Magic

Salad Days

Gardens are teeming with wildlife right now, says Debby Looney

MY WINTER heathers are still in flower, and they are providing countless bees with happiness! Berberis darwinii is another plant which bees love. Robust, hardy plants, covered in bright orange flowers, they grace even the most windswept of gardens. Another easy to grow, yet striking plant is the flowering currant, or Ribes sanguineum. There are many on hedgerows around the country, but ‘Pulborough Scarlet’ and ‘White Icicle’ are lovely varieties for any border. Again, much appreciated by pollinators. Many vegetables can be sown outdoors, or in a cold frame from now on. As many readers will know, veg are a bit of a passion of mine. The amount of chemicals we are inadvertently consuming is scary, so at least when you are sowing and growing yourself you know what is on your plate... I have written about asparagus peas, kohlrabi and Jerusalem artichokes before, but they are worth mentioning again! A favourite of mine over the last few years is Mizuna. A salad green from Japan, the name means “water greens”, (mizu=water nu=greens). It can be sown all year round, and actually loves our rain! Chop suey greens are also easy to grow greens. They are of the Chrysanthemum family, and pest free. Again they grow outdoors year round. In a stirfry they give a lovely fresh tangy flavour. Wasabi greens are something I will be trying for the first time this year. I love the hotness of wasabi paste, and am looking forward to a toned down version of it in a salad. Rocket is another super easy superfood to grow. As is Swiss chard. I have the variety ‘Bright lights’ growing, which even looks good in the flower border! Claytonia, or winter purslane is also an unusual crop, excellent as a cut and come crop, its leaves add a lovely texture to any salad. Cavolo nero, or black kale, is also a favourite of mine. The leaves add such striking colour to the veg garden! Speaking of kale, I received cut and come cabbage cuttings from a very nice gentleman at work a few weeks ago. They have all rooted, so thank you, if you are a reader! It always strikes me that enthusiastic gardeners are the loveliest people. They are generous with their knowledge, skills and experience. So all gardeners out there, give each other a well-deserved pat on the back! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

Exclusive Killarney Sites With €350,000 Price Tag Attract Interest From Across The World INTEREST from as far afield as Hong Kong has been expressed in luxury sites that have come on the market in Killarney. The three exclusive housing sites are on the market for €350,000 each and a flood of requests for information followed from across the globe, including Hong Kong, California and London. The 0.4-acre sites on Ross Road border Killarney Racecourse and are across the road from Killarney National Park. Just 10 minutes’ walking distance from the town centre, they come with full planning permission for 3,000 square feet luxury homes, complete with four

ensuite bedrooms. The 1.85-acre site was originally owned by the Killarney Race Company. It was sold in 2007 and has since changed hands and has been put on the market by Kilmackillogue Properties. Auctioneer John Buckley is the selling agent. Of course, Ross Road leads down to the largest of Killarney’s three lakes, Lough Leane, and to the restored fortress of the O’Donoghue clan, Ross Castle, an exceptional example of a 15th-century Irish chieftain’s stronghold. A short stroll leads to an entrance for Killarney National Park.

The sites are close to Ross Castle.

Centenary Day For Ford In Ireland

Ford Factory Established By Henry Ford In Cork On April 17, 1917

NEXT Monday marks exactly 100 years since Henry Ford established Henry Ford & Son Limited on the Marina in Cork, his ancestral home city. It also will kick off a week-long series of activities that will see great-grandson of Henry Ford and Executive Chairman of Ford Motor Company, William Clay Ford, Jr, arrive in Cork to mark the centenary and include a visit to the ancestral home of the Ford family. Henry Ford’s father, William Ford, emigrated from Ballinascarthy, Co Cork, to the US in 1847 during the Famine and Henry was born in Michigan in 1863. Proud of his Cork roots, he came back and opened the first Ford factory outside the US in April 1917. In his own words, he hoped that the new Ford plant “would start Ireland along the road to industry”. The setting up of the Ford plant in Cork was the first example of foreign direct investment in Ireland, many decades before the term was even coined. The company that he legally established was entitled

Henry Ford & Son Ltd. and that continues to be the legal name of Ford in Ireland to this day – the only Ford entity in the world to include the full name of the company’s founder in its title. The Fordson tractor was the main product produced by the Cork plant, by 1929 became the largest tractor factory in the world. The factory also produced passenger models, including the iconic Model T. The last Model T

produced by Ford rolled off the Cork production line in 1928. The Cork factory also produced passenger cars from the 30s right up to the 80s including the Model A, Model BF and Model Y, Prefect, Anglia, Escort, Cortina and Sierra. Everyone has an old story that connects them with a Ford product and this publication is no different albeit not an assembled product from Cork but the boxes the unassembled parts came in. The timber 8ft cube containers were ideal for timber frame construction that is commonplace today. For shipping they were strong and waterproof and made up the carcass of our first offices in Woodlawn. Sadly, no longer, purely because we outgrew the space. Ford is well represented in our community today by the Daly family and Killarney Autos and continues to support the Irish economy with 52 dealers nationwide. Long may it continue.

It will be Alonso’s first time in the showcase motorsport event as he steps up his bid to win “Triple Crown’’ of motorsport: the Monaco GP, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours race. Rally Corsica THIERRY NEUVILLE took his and Hyundai’s first World Rally Championship victory of the season on the Tour of Corsica, making it four different winners in four different cars to start 2017. This came at the expensive of Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle retiring from the lead with engine troubles on the afternoon stages. Up to that point they were showing good pace against Sebastian Ogier, who himself had mechanical issues on the same stage, whoever managed to survive to secure second spot. Any concerns over 2017 Citroen’s pace on asphalt was put to rest last weekend as Meeke and Nagle controlled the lead comfortably before they retired. Meeke’s Citroen teammate Craig Breen took fifth overall and sits sixth in the championship points despite missing Mexico and doing Monte Carlo in an older-spec car. Twenty-two-year-old Rob Duggan also represented Killarney on the WRC international stage with an impressive fifth in the WRC3 class and 38th overall. Rob is the 2016 British Junior Rally Champion and the 2015 winner of the Billy Coleman Award for upcoming Irish rally drivers. It is great to see young Irish talent on WRC events. One to see in the sharp end in years to come.

Triple Birthday Celebrations For Killarney Family

It was a triple birthday party for members of the Daly family at The Cahernane Hotel last Saturday. Pics: Eamonn Keogh

BIRTHDAY cake tasted three times as nice at a special party organised by the Daly family in Killarney at the weekend. Anne Daly celebrated her 92nd birthday while her daughters Joan Curtin and Bernie Leahy also enjoyed landmark birth-

days, with Joan celebrating her 60th and Bernie marking her 50th. Friends and relatives of the three birthday girls gathered to help them blow out the candles at the sun-soaked celebration in The Cahernane Hotel.

Anne Daly celebrated her 92nd birthday at The Cahernane Hotel while her daughters Joan Curtin (60th) and Bernie Leahy (50th) were also celebrating.

In loving memory of Jerh Buckley, late of Lismongane, Fossa, Killarney, who died on the 16th April, 2014. Not a day goes by, When we don’t wipe away a tear, And wonder why the angels, Wouldn’t let us keep you here. They must have had a good reason, Or plan we do not know, For why they chose you. We didn’t want to let you go, But maybe heaven’s gardens Are more beautiful to view, Now that they’re being tended, By a special guy like you. A quiet, loving family man, So thoughtful, warm and kind, The best, most giving Dad Anyone could ever find. 7TH ANNIVERSARY & BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE DINEEN

A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God would have spared you If just for a few more years. It does not take a special day For me to think of you Each Mass I hear, each prayer I say Is offered up for you. We seldom ask for miracles, But today just one would do, To have the front door open, And to see you walking through. We travel to your graveside, Some flowers we lay with care, But the hardest thing to do, Is turn and leave you there. I’m sending a dove to heaven With a parcel on it’s wings Be careful how you open it It’s full of beautiful things

In loving memory of Marie Coffey (nee Cremin), Carnahone, Beaufort, Co. Kerry who died 16th April 1992.

It’s filled with a million kisses Wrapped up with a million hugs It’s from your daughter Yvonne Who sends it with all her love.

Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear.

We lost a father with a heart of gold, How much we miss him Can never be told,

Loved and missed always by, Husband, Frankie, Daughters Aoife and Roisin, Son Diarmuid, Grandchildren Aine and Amelia.

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE DORAN

He shared our troubles And helped us along, If we follow in his footsteps we will never go wrong. Aviva Dream Over As Unlucky Celts Pay The Penalty Sheriff keeper the hero as Dubs dump Celtic out of the FAI Junior Cup, writes Adam Moynihan FAI Junior Cup Semi-Final Killarney Celtic 1-1 Sheriff YC (AET) (Sheriff win 4-2 on pens) THERE was heartache for Celtic in Mastergeeha on Saturday evening as reigning champions Sheriff knocked them out of the FAI Junior Cup. The Killarney side had already shocked Clare champions Newmarket and Limerick sides Ballynanty and Janesboro en route to a historic semi-final but Sheriff proved a bridge too far. After a gruelling 120 minutes of football, Celtic bowed out on penalties. It was a cruel way to exit the competition, especially considering the overall balance of play. Celtic were well on top in the first half and could have taken the lead, Matt Keane and Stephen Hayes both spurning really good opportunities. Sheriff looked cagey in that first half and although they improved a bit in the second when they had the wind at their backs, I expected a lot more guile from a team considered by many to be the best in the country. In truth, that second period was a long way away from the spectacle we all hoped for as both teams struggled to string any number of passes together. The ball spent more time out of play

Spillane: The players gave it everything

than in, and there were collective groans at one stage when another stray pass sailed over the sideline. The blustery conditions didn’t help obviously and in fairness to Celtic they had every right to dig in and make things difficult for their more illustrious opponents. It was deep into extra time before the deadlock was broken so when the goal went Sheriff’s way it must have been a devastating blow to the home team, but this Celtic side have a flair for the dramatic and there was time for another late twist. Substitute Pa McGrath went down in the box and Jamie Spillane, who has been a big time player all season, converted the spot kick to send the game to a shoot-out. Roy Kelliher gave his side a massive boost by saving Sheriff’s opening penalty and when Spillane coolly converted his second spot kick in a matter of minutes, Celtic were in the driving seat. The Dubs got off the mark to make it 1-1 before Cathal O’Shea calmly restored Celtic’s lead. Sheriff’s third attempt was successful, and when Celtic substitute Conor Randall was denied by Lee Murphy it was all to play for once again. Murphy himself stepped up to make it 3-2 to Sheriff and he wasn’t finished yet, getting down low to parry Gary Keane’s

effort and leave his side just one successful penalty kick away from the Aviva. His teammate did the necessary and Celtic were out of the FAI Junior Cup. Manager Brian Spillane felt his side needed to score when they were on top in the first half. “It was our game plan to go at them straight away and we did pin them back and cause them a lot of trouble,” he said after the match. “But when you’re on top against these teams you need to get a goal.” He noted that everyone was

naturally disappointed but he was ultimately very proud of his players. “A lot of the lads were inconsolable in the dressing room. It’s going hurt us, to be honest. It’s going to be hard to take. But the players gave it everything. You’d have to be proud of them.” Celtic: Roy Kelliher; Chris O’Leary, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh (c), Brendan Falvey; Gary Keane, Podge O’Connor; Wayne Sparling, Matt Keane, Stephen Hayes; Cathal O’Shea.

Simply The Best , Better Than All The Rest Caesar’s famous dictum “Veni, vidi, vici” can be attributed to Colm Cooper, says Eamonn Fitzgerald VISION, silken skills, balance, fiercely competitive, ability to win his own ball no matter what way it went in to him and as brave as they come. Caesar’s famous dictum “Veni, vidi, vici” can be attributed to Colm Cooper. He came from under-6s with Dr Crokes and from the street games in Ardshanavooley. He saw it through for 27 years, 17 of those with Kerry. He conquered everything that Gaelic football had to offer him. Trot out the usual sports clichés and you still haven’t captured all the greatness of Colm Gooch Cooper, who retired from inter-county football last week. However, he will continue to play with Dr Crokes. Whether he was wearing the number 13 geansaí, or the number 11 for the past few seasons, he struck terror in all opposition. Dublin player Barry Cahill was very honest in his tribute.: Thank God I never had to mark him.”

The Greatest Footballer Of All Time

Is Gooch the greatest footballer of all time? I have always maintained that he was and that is judged on following Gaelic football for over six decades. I visited Con Houlihan in St James’ Hospital a few short weeks before he died and interviewed him for two hours. I asked the greatest word-crafter of sporting journalism to name his greatest footballer of all time. There was no hesitation. “Colm Cooper is the best forward I have seen play in my lifetime and I have seen a large number of star players,” he said.

Mikey Sheehy

Mikey Sheehy was a gifted corner forward in Mick O’Dwyer’s greatest golden years. When he was appointed senior selector with Kerry I asked him to rate Gooch. “He has everything, vision, balance two good feet and the ability to turn a defence inside out. On his day he is unmarkable,“ said the great Mikey Sheehy. When I pressed him further saying that himself, John Egan and Pat Spillane were brilliant forwards, he replied “I can only talk for myself and anything I did in my own playing days could not compare with what Colm did so often for Kerry and for Crokes. After all he is the greatest scorer of all time in the championship with Kerry. The wider audience saw his great days with Kerry, but let us look back to the early formative years growing up in Ardshanavooley. Here he learned with his family and young neighbours how to kick the ball, dummy and score against the sheds which sufficed as a goalmouth. Georgie Best stated in his biography that he learned from a very young age how to survive in the street games they played on concrete in Belfast. His trademark dribble was further developed when he went to Old Trafford. Transfer Belfast for Ardshanavooley, Old Trafford for Croke Park and see how Gooch progressed.

Pádraig O’Shea

In an interview some years ago for On the Ball, Colm said that Padraig O’Shea was his first coach in the Saturday morning sessions for Dr Crokes. It was he that showed him the skills of Gaelic football formalising what he had learned on the little green patch in Ardshan. Pádraig O’Shea continued. “We were lucky to have 2 balls for the 40 or 50 youngsters, but Colm always seemed to be on the ball. He demanded the ball while the others were too timid to shoot for goal. He shot a lot of goals on those Saturday morning sessions. He was the first fella that attended the sessions with a ready-made nickname. Peter O’Brien had christened him Gooch and it stuck to

him. He was extra special even at under-6s. Smaller and more frail than his contemporaries he was an avid learner as we coached the basic skills of catching and kicking, the pick-up, the solo run and the various ways to pass the ball He just wanted to be the best at these basic skills. Some day he would pull on the green and gold of Kerry.” It was no surprise to me that he lined out in the Kerry SFC for Crokes against the Maurice Fitzgerald led South Kerry along with his four brothers, Danny, Mark, Mike and Vince. He scored a goal that evening which turned the game in Crokes favour. He was only 16 years old at that time. He went on to win his first Kerry SFC title with Crokes and never lost his place on the team. He was the standout player for Dr Crokes for the next 17 years, culminating on that glorious day, St Patrick’s Day 2017, when Crokes won the All Ireland club title. He got the all-important goal after great work by Daithí Casey and in the final nine minutes of that game he conducted the countdown running down the clock, holding on to a precarious two-point lead like a true master of an orchestra; there was no way that Slaughtneil could lay their hands on the ball.

Titles

He made his inter-county senior championship debut v Limerick in 2002 and made 85 SFC appearances for Kerry scoring 23 goals and 283 points; this is an all-time Gaelic football championship scoring record. He won four All Ireland SFC medals, nine Munster and eight All Stars. That eight is a remarkable achievement because it was only twice in those eight years that Kerry won the All Ireland. With Dr Crokes he won eleven O’Donoghue Cups, six Kerry SFC Titles, five Munster club and the most treasured of all, an All-Ireland senior club title in 2017. That is a remarkable haul of medals, but he also suffered so many disappointments losing four All-Irelands and at club level he lost three All-Ireland club semi-finals .He never forgot these as he fought back and learned from these setbacks to win the All-Ireland club. He suffered a terrible knee injury in February 2014 in the All Ireland club semi-final. Such a serious injury would be career ending for most players, but typical of his determination Gooch fought his way back to give further service to his club and to his county.

All-Time Greats

Wherever, or whenever people will talk about the greatest footballers, they will talk about Mick O’Connell and Colm Cooper. Joining them are the greats of other sports such as Christy Ring and Henry Shefflin, Lester Piggott, Pele, Best and Messi, Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros, Michael Jordan and Mike Gibson. From the world of tennis comes Federer. Why will these be remembered long after they have retired? I feel not only did they achieve so much in their lifetimes at sport but their displays were the nearest any mortal can come to in the perfection of the skills of their chosen sport. They all have the Xfactor and their memory is kept alive long after they have retired from sport. On so many occasions I met GAA supporters from far away counties who came to Croke matches just to see the Gooch play and when the game was over he was so patient and humble writing autographs and standing in for those selfies. He was a great man for the big occasion on the greatest stage of all, Croke Park. He scored 11 goals

on that hallowed turf. He scored a total of 23 championship goals. His highest aggregate scoring total in one SFC game was 2-5 versus Limerick in the 2005 Munster semi-final.

Skills

Colm had all the skills. In particular, he perfected the art of passing the ball by hand or foot to a teammate better positioned to score. He could see possibilities, where no one else saw them; he thought quicker than anyone else and sent that defence-splitting foot pass in to the arms of his teammate who was 40 yards away. Another great skill he had was that when he was shouldered to the ground by a defender he never lost the ball and the split second after going to ground he rolled over and was back up on his feet before the bewildered defender could come near him again. He is happiest of all living with his neighbours in Ardshanavooley. Despite all of his successes and universal adulation he has never lost the run of himself. How could he as his siblings, Geraldine, Karen, Danny, Mark, Mike and Vince, keep him grounded? In the future he will be joining his brothers at the Saturday morning coaching sessions. That’s the legacy of Dr Crokes, in-house coaching by club members. On the Ball salutes Gooch. An-sheans nách mbeidh do leithéid ann arís, is go gcuitítear do shaothar leat, a Choilm. Thanks for the memories.

What Others Said About Gooch Joe Brolly: “Poets should write poems about him. His football was very special. He was the ultimate purveyor of skill. He was almost a computer-animated footballer. He would deliver a ball like a butler on a silver platter. He could bounce it (the ball) in front of him; he could put it on his chest. It was a thing of beauty.” Henry Shefflin: “The most intelligent and skilful player I have ever seen. Croke Park will miss you. Enjoy retirement.” Pat Spillane: “The greatest footballer I have seen come out of Kerry and probably the greatest of all time.” Kieran O’Leary: “Well done on a fantastic inter-county career. Without a doubt the greatest of all time. Thanks for the memories my friend.” Alan Brogan: “No matter what we did so often the Dubs couldn’t stop Colm Cooper. Top class and without knowing it a teacher to a lot of great forwards.” John Egan (soccer international): “A player like Gooch does not come around again. Thanks for the memories and well done on a great career.” Shane Lowry: “A few defenders will sleep better tonight now that the great one has retired. Congrats on a great career.” Ronan O’Gara: “A footballing genius bows out. Bravo Gooch. You showed why brains and speed of thought always wins out.” Bryan Cooper: “Wishing the genius of Gooch the very best in his retirement. By far the best cooper we will see come out of Kerry for a long time.” Jamie Clarke: “Best wishes Colm. Loved watching you over the years. Thanks for inspiring number 13s everywhere .” Owen Mulligan: “An absolute joy to watch. He lit up Croke Park on many an occasion.”

14.04.17

Killarney Celtic’s Dream Team Sports columnist Adam Moynihan pays tribute to 2016/17 Celtic side who became the first Kerry team to reach the last four of the FAI Junior Cup

Back, Podge O’Connor, Chris O’Leary, Roy Kelliher, John McDonagh, Pa McGrath, Jamie Spillane, Matt Keane, Wayne Sparling, Peter McCarthy, Brendan Falvey, Cathal O’Shea.

GK – Roy Kelliher

Kelliher was playing every second game before Brian Kelly went back in with Kerry but since being handed the No. 1 shirt on a permanent basis, the Glenflesk native has been a key figure. Crucial saves kept Celtic alive in earlier rounds and he again proved his worth in the semi-final, pulling off another top save in the shoot-out.

DM – Gary Keane

One of Celtic’s most experienced players, Keane was unfortunate to see his penalty saved by the excellent Lee Murphy in the shoot-out last Saturday but he played a huge role in getting his side to the last four in the first place.

RB – Chris O’Leary

A tough-tackling defender, the highlight of O’Leary’s campaign came in the last 32 tie against Clare champions Newmarket Celtic. With the game deadlocked at 2-2 and extra time looming, O’Leary rose highest and headed home Conor Randall’s cross to fire Celtic into the last 16.

CB – Jamie Spillane

A standout performer throughout Celtic’s run to the semi-final, Spillane has caught the eye more than any other Celtic player with a string of high quality displays. Strong in the tackle and comfortable on the ball, he netted pivotal equalisers in both the quarterfinal and against Sheriff in the semis.

CB – John McDonagh (captain)

Smiley showed great leadership in some of the biggest games in Celtic’s history, perhaps most notably in the quarter final against Janesboro where he and his partner Spillane held firm in spite of severe pressure. He marshalled his troops well again against Sheriff as they kept a clean sheet (in 90 minutes) against the most formidable attacking outfit in the country.

LB – Brendan Falvey

ST – Cathal O’Shea

DM – Podge O’Connor

Subs: DM – Pa McGrath

A fearsome competitor, Falvey recovered from a broken hand to feature in the Janesboro game and put in a typically solid display against Sheriff. Sheriff were strong down their right side but he and his winger Stephen Hayes did enough to nullify that particular threat. Great efforts were made to fly Podge home from America for both the Janesboro and Sheriff games and he made a valuable contribution in the semi-final, man-marking the Dublin kingpins’ key creative player Darren Dunne and helping to shield his back four from several Sheriff attacks.

RM – Wayne Sparling

Last year’s club Player of the Year has been superb again so far this season. Possessing lightning pace and an excellent touch, Sparling is always looking to put defenders on the back foot and looked dangerous against Sheriff, especially in the first half when Celtic were on top.

CAM – Matt Keane

A technically gifted midfield player, Keane was without question one of Celtic’s best players over the course of their historic cup run. He showed flashes of brilliance in the semi-final and almost gave his side the lead in the first half.

RM – Stephen Hayes

Dropped for the Janesboro game, Hayes came off the bench and scored arguably the most important goal ever scored in Celtic Park to fire his side into the last four. He was re-instated to the starting line-up for the semi-final and missed a good chance to open the scoring just before half time, but he put in a good shift defensively to keep Sheriff’s dangerous RB quiet.

The young striker was forced to plough a lonely furrow for much of the game but he worked hard and showed his electric pace and neat first touch on a number of occasions. He did well to hold his nerve and convert his penalty in the shoot-out.

Hard-working and strong in the air, McGrath will feel massively hard done by to have been left out for the semi-final. He was one of Celtic’s most consistent players and put in big shifts in many of their biggest wins.

RB – Chris Brady

Brady has just recently made his return to the fold and is likely to see more game time over the next couple of months.

LM – Conor Randall

He was one of the unfortunate ones to miss a penalty in the shoot-out but the lively youngster did well when called upon a number of times this season.

ST – Stephen McCarthy

After Celtic equalised at the end of extra time, the management did their best to get McCarthy on so he could take their third penalty. Unfortunately for him, the officials blew the game up thirty seconds early. Celtic missed that third penalty and ultimately bowed out, so McCarthy can only wonder what might have been.

ST – Peter McCarthy

The veteran striker was suspended for the semi-final following his harsh red card against Janesboro in the quarters.

Manager: Brian Spillane

Spillane made a big call in leaving Stephen Hayes out of the quarterfinal but the decision was justified when the winger came on and got the winner. He will ultimately be disappointed to crash out in such an unfortunate fashion but can be proud of guiding his team to victory over some of the best teams in Ireland.

Rugby News ...

Words: Liam Murphy

LAST weekend the rugby focus was back on the Pro 12 for Munster and in the big cup final for Killarney RFC seniors, ensuring much excitement locally following the lads’ wellearned promotion to Division 2 of the Munster Junior League the previous weekend. In a weekend where Kerry beat the Dubs in the National League final and the underdogs really stepped up to beat the All-Ireland Champions and where Sergio Garcia won the Masters at Augusta, we were reminded that the favourites tag can mean nothing in sport. Munster knew that Glasgow would be a tough ask, given our recent history with them in the European Cup as well as the Pro 12. With only three matches left in the league before the playoffs, it is vital to get the points where possible and Rassie’s men continued the magical

season with a hard fought win in Cork. This win keeps Munster at second place in the league, one place behind Leinster. Next Saturday Munster host Ulster at Thomond Park in what should be another cracker of a match, while all eyes will be on the hopeful return of Conor Murray and CJ Stander ahead of the European Cup semi in a few weeks.

Last Sunday, our own Killarney RFC senior team continued their own magical season winning the much-coveted Junior Martin O’Sullivan Cup. Following on from winning promotion to Division 2 of the Munster Junior League in a hard-fought win in Killorglin, Ger Moynihan’s men brought silverware to the clubhouse in Aghadoe with a

well-deserved win over Fethard in Rathcooney. A brilliant win with tries by Alan Mulligan and Timmy Dudley and the deadly Paudie Sheahan scoring from the boot meant the men in Black and Red tasted champagne again! Celebrations On The Double At St Brendan’s THE sharpshooting students of St Brendan’s College enjoyed a week of celebrations after double All-Ireland wins in two sporting codes. A bonfire blazed as the college retrained the coveted Hogan Cup last Saturday week and just days later the St Brendan’s soccer team added to the student body’s impressive trophy haul as it secured its third soccer title in recent years. The Hogan Cup-winning team defeated St Peter’s College by eight points and were feted at halftime during the Kerry-Tyrone match at Fitzgerald Stadium. Later on there was a hero’s welcome

for the team, their captain Dara Moynihan, coaches Garry McGrath, Hugh Rudden and Arthur Fitzgerald as they returned to the captain and player Niall McCarthy’s home club of Spa GAA for a special reception. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the under-15 soccer team from St Brendan’s College won the FAI School Minor Boys National Cup final. They overcame Deele College 2-1. The tea, coached by Trevor Nagle and Joe Hurley, received a hero’s welcome at a special school assembly where both teams were congratulated by principal Sean Coffey, tm coaches and sports coordinator Ed O’Neill.

Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary reports on an enthralling league final

AFTER a nail-biting game of football before 53,840 spectators at Croke Park on Sunday last Kerry senior footballers were crowned Allianz League champions for the 20th time when defeating the five-in-a-row chasing Dublin fifteen by the slenderest of margins. Just a few short weeks ago, Kerry players and supporters left Austin Stack Park disappointed that they had not brought a fantastic run of League and Championship victories by the Metropolitans to an end but on this occasion there was to be no reprieve for the Dubs as lady luck smiled on Kerry at the death when Dean Rock’s late-late free came back off the post. It was a victory that this Kerry team certainly deserved as they had bossed proceedings for long periods taking the game to their opponents with some fine attacking play that was a joy to behold. Kerry management obviously decided that on this occasion, the best method of defence was attack and the Kerry half back and midfield lines poured forward at every opportunity. The winners were under pressure mid way through the first half but they fought back well to be just a point in arrears at the break. The game was really won and lost in the

third quarter as Kerry kicked some well worked scores that had the larger than expected Kerry support in full voice. However, a Dublin goal made for a tighter than expected finish but a couple of tremendous scores from David Moran and Bryan Sheehan would ensure that it was going to be Kerry’s title once again. This was a very satisfying victory for all concerned, none more so than for the players and management who had come in for a lot of criticism from both inside and outside of the county during the course of a League campaign that that had more than it’s share of ups and downs. The younger players in particular were not one bit fazed taking on the All Ireland champions in their own back yard and the experience gained is bound to stand to them come championship time. As regards the championship, Kerry will not be in action until the weekend of June 11 when they play the winners of the Clare V Limerick quarterfinal tie a game that will be played in Cusack Park (if Clare) or Fitzgerald Stadium (if Limerick). In the meantime the Kerry players return to their clubs for the club championships as Allianz League champions for the first time since 2009.

Killarney Swimming Club

Congratulations Congratulations to our swimmers who took part in the Grade II Gala in UL on the 1st of April. The Gala was a long-course event i.e. in a 50 metre Olympic-size swimming pool and this was a “first” for most of these swimmers. Nevertheless, there were plenty of personal best times achieved as well as medals. One of our swimmers, Moya Noctor, improved on her time in the 200 metres freestyle by an incredible 20 seconds! Well done, Moya. Girls under 11 – Faye O’Neill took to the podium for a marvelous bronze medal win in the 100 metres backstroke. Faye is certainly one of the club’s bright young prospects and it was a well-deserved win. Girls over 14 – Sarah O’Connor won a magnificent bronze medal in the 100 metres freestyle in what was a very fast and hard-

fought race. We always knew Sarah was made of tough stuff and she certainly proved that on the day!

Celtic dominated early possession but couldn’t pierce a strong rearguard - a swirling breeze helped neither side. The excellent Padraig O’Connor couldn’t convert a difficult chance. and both nets remained unruffled by the half-time whistle. tip it away. Paul Murphy tried a clever lob after a brilliant through ball but Roy was out fast enough to force the kick off target. Stephen Murphy drilled another bullet free kick but Roy got his full body behind it. The tempo increased in a sparkling second half with both sides going close. Goal chances were at a premium. Sheriff finished normal time with the upper hand but no goal. Extra-time. Sheriff still on top, but Celtic battled hard for every inch of ground. Early in the second half of extra-time, a Celtic clearance took a fluky deflkection off a defender and Thomas Dunne pounced like a hawk with a superb finish. A second yellow for Chris O’Leary, who was outstanding alongside McDonagh, Falvey, and the unanimous selection for man of the match Jamie Spillane, meant that an uphill climb now looked like a very sheer cliff. Then Celtic, with sheer heart and willpower as much as craft and skill, began to climb.... Into the final minute....no cracks but Celtic still pounding that defensive wall, Conor Randall snapped onto a loose ball....a clumsy challenge by a desperate keeper...penalty! Jamie Spillane stepped up...over 2000 spectators hardly dared to breathe....but Jamie was calmness personified as he slotted it home. Penalty shootout. Roy saved the first and Jamie scored again, but Sheriff keeper Lee Murphy read our kicks well and it is they who go through to the final. So close, so far away. So many heroes on one of the greatest nights ever in our history. Agonising at the finish, of course, it couldn’t be anything else in that moment. But heart-breaking? No. This isn’t the end of anything. This is only our first step at this level, not our last. We haven’t often tasted the air at this altitude, and we like it. We will come again. Comhgairdeas to the reigning champions and best wishes in the final, and mile buiochas to everyone who got behind us from far and near on this epic rollercoaster of a journey. Seniors: Very well done to Ger Moynihan and his charges who backed up last weekend’s Munster Junior League promotion win over neighbours Killorglin with another massive win last weekend, winning the much coveted Martin O’Sullivan Cup. This was always one Cup that eluded us and the lads had to cross the border into County Cork to Old Christian’s ground at Rathcooney for the final. Tipperary side Fethard and District were the opposition on the day and the hme side were first on the board within the first 15 minutes. Second Row Alan Mulligan crossed the whitewash for his now trademark try, which was converted by outhalf Paudie Sheahan Almost immediately Fethard scored a try of their own and Paudie Sheahan who was on fire from the boot added another penalty to leave the game 10-8 to the Kerry side at half time. Paudie added two more penalties in the second half before returning Timmy Dudley scored a try. Timmy who was home for the weekend pulled in a ringer as we were missing 6 players from the previous weekend. Fethard scored a late try and Paudie Sheahan who was sublime from the boot added more to

Killarney Legion

CO.LEAGUE RD.3 Killarney Legion 0-15 Kilcummin 1-10 As was to be expected there was very little between these two sides as recent results showed. A tense but entertaining game saw both sides miss good goal chances in the first half and it was only within the last 10 mins. of the first half that the Legion opened some daylight as they hit 5 pts. to Kilcummin’s single to leave the home side leading 9 pts. to 4 going in at the break. The second half certainly wasn’t short of drama as both sides went after the win and gradually Kilcummin whittled away at the deficit and looked on the winning road when they burst through for a well taken goal to leave just a point in it. However the homesides resolve stiffened and with the defence working hard they gradually supplied more ball to the forwards. The result might have gone the other way had Kilcummin converted a penalty after 20 mins.but saw it hit the upright and was cleared by the defence.Taking heart from this the Legion tacked on 3 further 5 points to see them home.A last minute free in front of the Legion goal was cleared fittingly by Shaun Keane who turned in a fine game at midfield.A very satisfactory display continuing the obvious progress being made and with several young players improving steadily the senior management can be happy with the way things have worked out.Early days of course. GIRLS U16 The U16 girls played their first away against Scartaglin where conditions were soft underfoot to say the least & the match ended in a torrent of rain. The 13 a side game proved a lively affair with Legion taking a slender lead of at half time having battled a stiff wind for the first period, however the locals held their nerve in the second half & as Legion showed signs of fatigue they eventually went down by 2-9 to 2-7.Plenty positives though as those on the field were certainly not found wanting for effort and with several more to return to the panel better days lie ahead.Well done to John Doona,Keri Anne Hanrahan and Aisling Stack after their fine win over Tipperary. The next U16 outing in the League will be home against Na Gaeil on Friday 21st April. GOOD DAY IN CROKE PARK A defiant Kerry side showed that nothing can be taken for granted as they deservedly won their 20th.national league title and in the process put the other counties on notice that we haven’t gone away you know. Fair play to them. SO CLOSE Commiserations to Killarney Celtic who were denied an historic win in the F.A.I.Junior cup in the cruelest fashion going on on penalties, they made a good few sit up and take notice.

Hamper next weekend. Seniors Fossa played Dromid in Round 3 of the County League on Saturday evening in Fossa. Fossa 0-09, Dromid 2-07. Fossa will be disappointed not to have got something out of this game and it shows how tough this division is going to be, there are no easy games and the quality of the opposition is a step up from last year. Ladies Football A tougher test awaited Fossa in Rd 3 of the Rhyno Quality Feeds Div 4 Senior County Leagues when Clounmacon/ Moyvane descended on Fossa. Fossa lost this one by 2 points, but can be very proud of their footballing display on the day. Final score Fossa 2-12 Clounmacon/Moyvane 3-11.
