Editor’s View

Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Shame On Vandals Who Smashed Noah’s Bike MINDLESS vandalism is always sickening but when heartless thugs targeted bicycles owned by visitors to Killarney at the weekend it was particularly distressing. Which of us could not be moved to tears as a six-year-old boy and his family were left counting the cost of the crime? Sharon and Denis Myers from Mitchelstown were enjoying a holiday in Killarney with their daughter Sophie, 12, and son Noah, 6. The couple had bought two new bikes just a month ago, one of which is used for carrying Noah, who is a wheelchair user. Noah’s grandparents cycled the bicycles into Killarney town on Friday night and locked them near the cinema before going for dinner. They arrived back at between 10pm and 11pm to find the bikes smashed. “Some vandals (I have more choice words for them) had obviously decided they were going to try and steal the bikes but when they couldn’t, they decided they were going to damage them to the extent where they are useless,” said Sharon. The hearts of the entire community went out to Noah and his family, as the sixyear-old, who has Escobar syndrome and scoliosis, was the main person affected by

Cute Killarney Canine Video Star Bob Wows His Fans A NEW celebrity has taken up residence in town – Bob the dachshund has won an army of fans since he relocated to Killarney from Waterford in the past fortnight. So popular has Bob proved with guests from across the globe, that his winsome features are now adorning in-demand t-shirts and the adorable rescue dog made his debut as a movie star in a video released this week. Together with his buddy Kevin Leahy, owner and manager of The Black Sheep Hostel on New Street, Bob gives visitors to the area a warm welcome. And he enjoys pottering around the spacious south-facing grounds of his new home in his spare time, even keeping an eye on the resident freerange chickens to ensure their safety.

“I always wanted a sausage dog and when I met Bob at a dachshund rescue centre, that was it! We make a great team,” Kevin told Killarney Advertiser. The Killarney man opened The Black Sheep Hostel 15 months ago and it has gone from strength to strength. “I had the idea for a hostel like this while on my own travels in South America,” said Kevin. The cute sausage dog is the latest in a line of celebrity Killarney canines. Several years ago Zac the singing dog won fame from his perch in Knockreer while Bob’s pal Charlie, a spaniel who accompanies Donal Dux O’Donoghue as he ferries visitors across Killarney’s lakes, is another well-known pooch. T-shirts featuring Bob are now availa-

Top Accolade For Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa

THE landmark Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa is celebrating another success, having been singled out by HotelsCombined, an Australian-based hotel meta-search company, for outstanding customer experiences. This means the hotel has been ranked in the top 3% worldwide. Hotel GM Igor Van Riel said: “We are thrilled to receive such recognition and to know that we are in the top 3% worldwide, reaffirms to all the

team here that our hard work is not going unnoticed. At the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa, it’s quite simple; the guest is the centre of all we do and we never lose sight of this.” The recognition does not stop there, the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa was highly commended in the Tatler Spa Awards 20017 as one of the premier spas in Munster. You can contact the Killarney Plaza Hotel on 064-6621111 or see www. killarneyplaza.com

the crime. As his mum said: “There is a story behind everything and let this be a message to those who did this – by doing what you did you have taken away something that we saved hard to get, something that we got so that our son could experience more things that able-bodied people do! Shame on you and I hope that we catch you and make you pay for this pointless act of vandalism!” Sharon posted the account of what had happened on Facebook in the hope that witnesses might come forward to help the Garda investigation. The family, who in recent days were in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin with Noah, have since said they have been “blown away” by the messages of support and offers of financial donations that followed. However, Sharon said the family could not accept the financial offers and asked instead that donations be given to other causes. They also bear Killarney no ill will, saying that it was an incident that “could happen anywhere”. “We love Killarney and we would go back in a flash,” said Sharon. If you have information that could help the Garda investigation, contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.

The Spa At Aghadoe Scores Munster Title IT’S just not just Kerry’s footballers that can boast of a sought-after provincial title this year, but this week the Aghadoe Heights clinched the coveted Munster Spa of the Year award once again. Judges of the Irish Tatler Spa Awards noted how the guests’ relaxation begins from the moment they walk through the doors of the spa. “They are immediately immersed in a tranquil quietness and the gentle aroma of essential oils,” they added. “The immaculately maintained spa dazzles with a modern yet luxurious appearance.” The spa boasts world-class thermal suite facilities while the judges awarded top marks to the therapists.

Brendan Kealy Steps Away From Kerry Squad ALL-STAR goalkeeper Brendan Kealy is to step away from the Kerry squad, it was confirmed on Wednesday night. However, the 31-year-old has not closed the door on a return at a later date. The Kilcummin clubman rotated goalkeeping duties with Brian Kelly through the league.

As Kerry Gets Older, It Needs To Focus On Services For Older People

KILLARNEY has the distinction of having the oldest population among large towns in the country and overall Ireland is pushing on in terms of age, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office which show Kerry and Mayo are its oldest local authority areas. Killarney is Ireland’s oldest large town with an average age of almost 41, while the average age of Dingle’s population

is almost five years older than the national average, the CSO figures reveal. And as the county’s average age now stands at 40.2 compared to national average of 37.4, the pressure is on to plan for the provision of services. The dependency rate in the county is 57.3%, over 5% higher than the national average. Meanwhile, Kerry’s birth rate has dropped by 10% in t five years.

Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil has said the Government must start to plan for the provision of health and care services to deal with increasing demand. “This data should act as a wakeup call to the Government, and stimulate a debate on the type of services that having an older population in the county requires,” said Deputy Brassil. “We are already struggling to provide enough home help hours, respite packages and general care services for older people living in the county.”

He added: “The evidence is clear: older people do better if they can stay in their home, surrounded by their family, friends and community. “However, a change of this nature requires the Government to plan, secure resources and put in place the supports to deliver such a service. “The time for planning is now if we are to get ahead of the curve, and ensure that every older people can have a decent quality of life.”

Public Consultation on Homecare Services THE Minister for Health, Simon Harris, TD, and Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Jim Daly, TD, announced the opening of a public consultation on homecare services. The consultation is being carried out in order to help inform the development of a new statutory scheme and system of regulation for home care services. The consultation paper, launched on Wednesday, is particularly aimed at people who use homecare services,

their families and the general public. However, everyone with an interest, including health and social care providers; health and social care workers; advocacy groups; those providing complementary services (such as meals-on-wheels and social activities); and representative organisations is welcome to participate. The consultation paper is available online at http://health.gov.ie/consultations and the closing date for submissions is August 31.

TOASTMASTERS

Want To Be More Confident At Work And In Your Social Life?

Members of Toastmasters at the Killarney Toastmasters dinner in the Randles Hotel on Saturday. PIC: DYLAN CLIFFORD

Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Domnick Walsh JOINING Toastmasters is a life-changing experience, say its Killarney members. Toastmasters International was set up in 1922 by Ralph Smedley with the aim of improving public speaking, interview and leadership skills. The Killarney Toastmasters Club hosted its annual dinner at the Randles Hotel on Saturday, where Toastmasters area director Debby Looney reflected how clubs have the same set of goals to this day and help members boost their confidence at work and socially. “I went in myself hardly able to keep a conversation going, usually looking at my shoes, but now, though I am not a great speaker by any means, I do have the gumption to get up in front of people and have my say!” said Debby. There are clubs in Killarney, Tralee and West Limerick (Newcastlewest) and a club is in the process of being formed in Listowel. “It is not formal, or stuffy which seems to be a common misconception. Our youngest members are 18, and we have members from all walks of life, retirees, farmers, manual labourers, accountants, pharmacists, shop assistants and home makers- the list is endless!” said Debby. Toastmasters also organises community outreach programmes, for instance in St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary and St Brendan’s College, Killarney. Killarney Toastmasters Club meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, in The Dromhall Hotel; email killarneytoastmasters@gmail.com or call 086-6088156.

Residents Move Into Deer Lodge

RESIDENTS moved into the €13 million Deer Lodge Mental Health facility on Tuesday. The head of Mental Health Services at Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Sinead Glennon, described it as “a very significant day for mental health services in Kerry”. In particular, this was an important day for the people who have now moved out of the outdated and “entirely unsuitable” O’Connor Unit, Ms Glennon added. The management of Cork Kerry Community Healthcare paid tribute to the contribution and commitment of all staff involved in the project, from the design stage to completion. “This new facility will transform the lives of the many residents who will use the 40-bed facility in the years ahead,” said Ms Glennon. The mental health recovery unit for adults and older people is designed as four “households”, all connected through a central module that features a communal area, therapy areas, en-

trance, foyer, prayer room and other facilities. Each household has access to an internal landscaped garden area, and each resident has their own bedroom with en-suite facilities. The HSE noted that this facility will provide “the footprint” on which future service delivery is shaped. “The opening of Deer Lodge means that there is an overall increase of eight beds in Mental Health Services in Kerry and those eight beds come with a corresponding increase in staff numbers of 28.5,” stated the HSE. The Psychiatric Nurses’ Association (PNA) said while nursed welcome the new building and facilities, they remain “gravely concerned” that the quality of care including health and safety will be compromised due to what it describes as an “out-of-date service delivery model based on custodial care and low skill labour”.

It’s Take-Off As Kerry Joins Cork In US The Malton Is All Set To THE Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, led a 20-strong delegation from Cork and Kerry to Providence, Rhode Island, in the United States over the weekend to promote the new Norwegian Airways Cork-Providence trans-Atlantic service which commenced earlier this month. The group, which included the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr John Sheahan, and the council’s tourism officer, John Griffin, was hosted by GoProvidence, Rhode Island Airport Corporation and the State of Rhode Island and they attended a series of engagements with tourism and business leaders. The two-day visit, organised by Cork Airport, was aimed at boosting trans-Atlantic tourism and trade. Minister Griffin said that Providence, which is located midway between New York and Boston, was an important new gateway from the USA to the SouthWest of Ireland. The three-times weekly service is expected to bring an additional 20,000 US visitors to Cork and Kerry this year. It is the first direct trans-Atlantic service to Cork Airport in its 56-year history.

Evening Of High Drama APPLAUSE and congratulations rang out at the Killarney School of Music recently when Ray O’Sullivan’s Speech and Drama students received their Irish Board of Speech and Drama Grade Examination Awards. Writer, dramatist, actor, producer and director Aidan O’Connor presented the students with their certificates. These grades were amongst the highest achieved in the country from the Irish Board of Speech and Drama in 2017. The board director David Meredith, LISBD, paid glowing tribute to the Killarney School of Music Speech and Drama department for “the extremely high level of teaching that the students enjoyed”. Eighteen students received honours and eighteen notched first class hon-

ours, while seven students attaining the ultimate accolade of an IBSD Distinction. Unprecedentedly, The Irish board of Speech and Drama awarded two gold medals to students of the school. Rory McDonnell, Senior Grade Three, received a gold medal, as did Sadhbh Casey in senior grade two. Speech and Drama teacher Ray O’Sullivan said: “To have won three gold medals over the past two years is a phenomenal achievement that most schools could only dream of. I am truly blessed with wonderful students.” Ray will begin a new teaching term in September. Children are accepted for enrolment from 6 to 14 years of age. Further details are available from the school on 064-6637598.

Killarney filmmakers Dennis Earlie and Noreen Bingham are poised to walk the red carpet at an international film festival thanks to their short film Killarney House & Gardens – The Urban Secret Garden. The engaging movie short highlights the work the National Parks & Wildlife Services have done to restore the gardens and house to their former glory. The film been chosen to feature at the forthcoming VIVA Film Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The short compiled

by Dennis and Noreen of RSAM Productions is one of 24 shorts that have been selected to contest the tourism category of the festival’s competition in September. “The VIVA Film Festival focuses on domestic and international competitive films celebrating artistic achievements in the field of documentary film and video,” said Noreen. “The four categories are ecology, tourism, religion and youth.” This year 1,600 films submitted to the festival with 105 being selected of which 24 are in the tourism section. “Competing in this section are films from USA, UK, Russia, China, Argentina, Spain, Italy, France, Romania, Poland, Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Ireland,” said Dennis.

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

Grab That Building

CONCERN has been mounting about the future of the HSE owned St Finan’s – particularly in the light of the fire at the fine Victorian building of St Kevin’s in Cork. The health body has now confirmed it is in talks with “departments and agencies” to hand over the building. But the HSE also warns it will sell it off, if there is no agreement. The HSE owns several historic and vacant buildings, originally gifted to them by the county councils. It has at least two in Kerry, St Finan’s and the Dingle Hospital where Peig died. Both are wanted by their communities, both are empty for some years. In the case of St Finan’s it is the 30 acres of ground the council is eyeing for housing. But what of the listed building itself? I have long argued we need a hotel cum catering college in Killarney, a bit like a Swiss

college of catering. St Finan’s is perfect for this. Once it meets fire regulations, there is no reason it can’t have a lick of paint and hostel type accommodation with the locked wards the premier suites? Others too are calling for a firmer more rounded basis for tourism, including Emer Moynihan of Earls Court who is new president of the Soroptimists. She wants to see a third-level college and tourism made attractive as a full time, all year round career. Why not St Finan’s? And now with the vacating this week of the O’Connor Unit on the grounds, comes the news that the HSE has actually deemed the site “surplus to requirements”. When you wade through the jargon (the use of language always betrays the soul) the HSE wants to sell it off. “As the HSE doesn’t require the continued use of St Finan’s Killarney and Dingle

Hospital as healthcare premises, these sites have been deemed surplus to HSE requirements. “As a result, the sites were recently offered to other Government Departments/Agencies under the Protocol for the Intra-State Transfer of State Property Assets and the Protocol for the Intra-State Sharing of State Property Assets, as advised by Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. “The HSE is awaiting a response from these Departments/Agencies. Should there be no interest from this procedure, the HSE intend to commence the process to arrange for the disposal of these premises on the open market.” Time now for Killarney to step forward! Time to get together and push the public representatives and the officials. There are plenty of grants for doing up old buildings and converting them to use.

Not Finished With Health I AM not finished with health issues. A fortnight ago someone in my house was going for an operation on a Monday at “The Bons” in Tralee. Sunday around 12 noon a text comes in and I think it is hard to beat the nuns, it is after all “Bon Secours” the good help from the good sisters and a reminder now about preparation. Imagine the let-down I felt when I put on my glasses. “In respect of the €125.00 excess on your VHI policy, this amount is payable on admission on 03 July… You can pay by cash/cheque/visa debit or

credit card.” That caring message never arrived. Ah but the nuns are only a trading mark now and the whole medical thing is about money. Methinks there is another use for St Finan’s; an oldtype dispensary, as in Cuba, and corral all these administrators and medics into it and pay everyone surgeon to cleaner the same set wage. I wonder if that would change the type of message sent out on a Sunday from a hospital hiding behind a Christian name and using it as window dressing?

Killarney House NOBODY can be unaware now of the magnificent occasion the opening of Killarney House was. It was inclusive and for everyone. Why even some of the grand trustees of Muckross House were spotted standing and other lesser beings got to sit down! The boy scouts did a fine job presenting the Minister with a badge. It was a very inclusive type of day and Marina Cassidy’s harp playing wonderful and the butler got more attention than the lord, and rightly so. The three rooms are free for the moment. So grab the tour while you can. But there is a curious thing about Killarney visitor attractions. Something is happening which tourism spokespersons strive to explain. While numbers to heritage sites throughout the country soared last year, Killarney’s plummeted despite Killarney being thronged with tourists. Elsewhere so many tourists are now visiting Killarney and parts of Kerry the infrastructure in the Gap of Dunloe and in Slea Head in Dingle simply cannot cope, and there are suggestions by responsible local representatives that traffic lights are needed at Slea Head. Muckross House, which is in the heart of the Killarney National Park and a sister historic attraction the Ross Castle which rises magically on the shores of Lough Lein right on the edge of Killarney town, have plummeted. In 2015 Ross Castle got 95,785 visitors. But in 2016, this had fallen to 89,339. The castle which had been closed for many years while extensive stonework was taking place is much admired. Muckross House is not managed by the OPW, but separate figures released on my request show a drop there of 7,000. Muckross of course is jointly managed by the NPWS and trustees. And there is a similar arrangement with the sister facility of the Muckross traditional farms. While the farms saw a slight increase – almost 400 more to bring the numbers there to nearly 68,700 in 2016, the overall fee paying visitors to both Muckross House and the farms was down by just under 9,000 people, according to the NPWS. Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism president Paul O’Neill said he has made enquiries and the tearooms and craft shop did very well in 2016 at Muckross and Trustees have told him it continues to do very well in 2017. “The café is actually up,” Mr O’Neill said. Some local observes feel that Killarney is now a paradise for walkers and cyclists and visitors to the town are changing in profile – looking much more to the outdoors. The leading visitor sites continue to do remarkably well with the Rock of Cashel up by 38,081 bringing its numbers to 338,830 visitors in 2016. Dublin Castle also continued on its upwards trend with 253,786 visitors and Trim Castle welcomed 101,127 visitors in 2016 up 14,155 from 86,972 visitors in 2015. Outside of Dublin, Kilkenny Castle saw an increase of over 100,000 visitors. These were record-breaking numbers for Kilkenny in 2016 with 384,918 visitors to the Castle and its grounds. It will be interesting to see how Killarney House fares.

Education

School Is The First Of Its Kind In Kerry THERE was an impressive turnout at the information night organised in Killarney by Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) and the local community of Two Mile at Two Mile Community National School on Thursday. Colm McEvoy, CEO Kerry ETB, welcomed the gathering before Seamus Conboy, National Schools Development Officer with Education and Training Boards Ireland, gave an input on the CNS Model and showed a video of his own school in Citywest, Dublin. Ann O’Dwyer, director of schools, Kerry ETB, gave an update on the progress in relation to opening the school in September. Kerry ETB is delighted that local woman Sharon O’Riordan is to open a pre-school in the premises. Sharon, who is a past student of Kerry ETB childcare courses, will open the Little Explorers preschool for the next school year. Community representative Lisa Casey said this development is “a major boost to the community”. “When we were going door to door in the area promoting the school, parents were enquiring about the possibility of a playschool. We

are delighted to see it happening,” said Lisa. Colm McEvoy thanked the Diocese of Kerry for leasing the Two Mile School to Kerry ETB and praised the local community for the work they put into getting the school opened as a CNS. Kerry ETB is a locally based State agency and is already the patron of eight post-primary schools and one post-Leaving Certificate college. The Two Mile Community National School will be the first primary school of its kind in Kerry. In the Community National School model the ETB is the employer of all the staff as well as the corporate body with overall responsibility for governance. The school will have a board of management with responsibility for overall strategic planning and policy development. Another distinguishing feature of the CNS model is its multidenominational ethos. The school is accepting enrolments from junior infants to sixth class; call 066-7121488 086-4183558 or email cns@kerryetb.ie For further information on the CNS model, please visit www.cns.ie

Take a Little Bit of Killarney Wherever You Go FANCY the idea of a portable version of your favourite part of Killarney? Tourists have been swift to swoop on the appealing Pop-up Landmarks series, which features three-dimensional representations of many of Killarney and Kerry’s scenic spots. The brainchild of Youghal businessman Ger Flanagan of Flanagan Print & Office Supplies, the Pop-Up Landmarks are cleverly designed so they will slip into even the smallest of suitcases as they can be packed flat. As well as offering a choice of well-known buildings such as Muckross House, Muckross Abbey, Innisfallen Abbey, St Mary’s Cathedral and Ross Castle, the series also includes Torc Waterfall, Skellig Michael, the Old Weir Bridge, Killarney National Park and the Gap of Dunloe in addition to an iconic pop-up of a jaunting car and horse.

Ger has invested in new machines to develop the product range. “We also offer customised pieces – for instance, we can make a pop-up of a sporting event, sports star or even a sports club, or any other building,” added Ger. “We can produce them in any size up to life size and offer a free design service.” The Pop-Up Landmarks have a recommended retail price of €7.99 and are available in a number of Killarney stores, including The Blackthorn Gift Shop, Kate Kearney’s Cottage, The Gleneagle Hotel, Country Crafts, Shades of Erin and Touch of Class in the Innisfallen Shopping Mall. Poem

The Killarney Races By Nicky Barry

In the second week of July each year a section of northern folk, Get the hell out of the place, for they know what’s coming up. There’s bonfires, and there’s marches, complete with Lambeg drums, And the Fenian side of Ulster decide that week to take their hols. They head south to paradise to take in Killarney Races, For a week of fun and games, and happy racing faces. They wear short-sleeved summer shirts that they bought in Dunnes, As they celebrate in safety far from orange flutes and drums. Armed with The Examiner they saunter off down Rosss Road, To the most attractive track on earth in search of gold, Hoping to get some handy tips, and then back a right few winners, To pay for all the porter, and the five-course dinners. They might get lucky on the night, and they might lose a ton, But undaunted, they hit the town for a night of fun. Next day you’ll see them in the sun outside drinking coffee, With the Racing Post in hand studying form with glee. Next they’re up on jaunting cars, heading out to Muckross, Having almighty craic with jarveys about games Kerry lost, To mighty teams from the wee north, but they all agree, There’s no place like Killarney, for peace and serenity.

Paris or Milan? Denise Healy, winner of the Dawn Milk Ladies Day 2014, with her husband Aidan O’Mahony getting ready for this year’s Dawn Milk Ladies Day at the Killarney Races on Thursday, July 20.

World’s Fashion Capitals Beckon For Best-Dressed Lady & Gent NEXT week promises to be action-packed both on and off the track with a host of celebrities attending the Dawn Milk Ladies Day at the Killarney Races on Thursday, July 20. Top Irish model and Dancing with the Stars contestant Thalia Heffernan, right, will join Kerry football legend and winner of Dancing with Stars Aidan O’Mahony to judge the Dawn Milk Ladies Day 2017. The style stakes are high at the Killarney Races and the best-dressed lady will win a trip for two to Paris and a specially commissioned crystal vase. A new fashion category for gents has also been introduced this year and the bestdressed gent will receive a trip to Milan for two and a specially commissioned crystal decanter. Ladies day judge Thalia Heffernan, (Inset), provided some fashion tips for all ladies attending. “I’ll be looking for a well-rounded thought-out outfit. I can’t wait to see all the contenders!” said Thalia. “I will be looking for someone confident in their outfit and that will shine through.” Aidan O’Mahony also provided gents with his fashion tips, stating: “I am looking forward to seeing

individual, well-coordinated style on the gents and something that will stand out from the norm. It will be great to see gents getting recognition for their styling efforts as there is a fantastic variety of dapper style to choose from these days. The gents should not shy away from a bit of colour or floral.” A total of ten ladies and ten gents will be selected as finalists by the judges. Ladies and gents are advised to arrive early as the judges will be selecting finalists on the racecourse from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. John O’Sullivan, general manager, Dawn Milk, said: “Dawn Milk is delighted to sponsor Ladies Day at the Killarney Races for 24 years, making it one of the longest ladies day patronages in Ireland.” The four-day Killarney July Racing Festival, commencing on Monday, July 17, will combine the very best of horse racing with a fantastic festival atmosphere for all racegoers. Dawn Milk also sponsors the day’s racing on Thursday including the Dawn Milk Run Handicap Steeplechase (€11,500), the Dawn Omega Milk Handicap Hurdle (€12,500) and the Dawn Hi & Low Milk Beginners Steeplechase (€12,500).

Jay Z talks about his relationship with Beyoncé ‘It wasn’t built on 100 per cent truth’:

Jay Z admits his relationship with Beyonce started ‘publicly cracking’ and reveals working things out was ‘the hardest thing he’s ever done’ Jay Z has admitted his marriage ‘wasn’t totally built on 100 per cent truth’. The 47-year-old rapper, who tied the knot to Beyoncé Knowles nine years ago, admitted the ‘hardest thing’ he’s ever done is having to face up to potential difficulties in his union and try to work them out. He said: ‘This is my real life. I just ran into this place and we built this big, beautiful mansion of a relationship that wasn’t totally built on the 100 per cent truth and it starts cracking. ‘Things start happening that the public can see. Then we had to get to a point of, “OK, tear this down and let’s start from the beginning ... It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” He said: ‘I was on a boat, and I had the best time. I was like, “Man, this is great.” Then she had to leave. I was, like, crushed. “Man, I don’t even feel like this. What is happening to my body right now? I don’t even feel like this. Did I just say... Don’t leave?”’ The 4:44 hitmaker admitted the couple’s relationship has been ‘uncomfortable’ at times due to being in the public eye, but insists the key to their union is honesty.

Speaking in a video Footnotes for 4:44 to go alongside his latest album of the same name, said: ‘We’ve been in that space where we just got to the place that in order for this to work, it can’t be fake - not once. ‘I’m not saying it wasn’t uncomfortable because obviously it was, but because we’ve been doing it for so long it was less uncomfortable. Jay’s 4:44 title track features an apology from him to Beyonce, and speculation is rife that it is a direct reference to claims she hinted to him being unfaithful with “’ecky with the good hair’ on her visual LP Lemonade. His lyrics include: ‘If my children knew, I don’t even know what I would do. If they ain’t look at me the same, I would probably die with all the shame. ‘You did what with who? What good is a ménage a trois when you have a soulmate, you risked that for Blue? ‘I apologise, often womanise, took my child to be born, see through a woman’s eyes. ‘Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles. Took me too long for this song. I don’t deserve you.’

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Kerry TD Says:

He’d ‘Be Happy To Get In A Plane’ Flown By Pilot Who Has Had ‘Two Or Three Glasses Of Beer’ KERRY TD Danny Healy-Rae said he had never seen anyone whose ability to drive was affected by three glasses of beer. Speaking on national radio on Tuesday, Deputy Healy-Rae said: “I never condone drunk driving. At any time in the past, and it doesn’t happen any more, [when I saw] someone who wasn’t fit to drive… I took them

home myself.” The Kerry TD, who was speaking on The Pat Kenny Show on Newstalk, added: “Until the day I die, I don’t believe that anyone that has had just two or three glasses [of beer] – a pint and a half – that they’re a liability or a danger on the road.” Deputy Healy-Rae was speaking before Cabinet deferred a decision

on whether to allow a free vote on controversial proposals to impose a mandatory driving ban on all motorists convicted of drink driving. The Kerry TD opposes moves to increase penalties for drink driving and said he would be happy to get into a plane being flown by someone who has had two or three glasses of beer. “I’d go in the plane

myself. I believe what I am saying,” he said. Asked why a designated driver system would not work in rural area, he said: “In rural Ireland, we’re talking about people living on their own, […]Many of them where the nearest neighbour is two or three miles away, who doesn’t go to the pub. They are so isolated.”

Free-Speech Group Sues Trump For Blocking Twitter Users A FREE-SPEECH group on Tuesday sued US President Donald Trump for blocking Twitter users from his @realDonaldTrump account, arguing the practice violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Reuters reports how the lawsuit, brought by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York and joined by seven individual Twitter users, claims Trump blocked a number of accounts whose owners replied to his tweets with comments that criti-

cised, mocked or disagreed with the president. Trump’s blocking of the accounts amounted

to an unconstitutional effort to suppress dissent, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Because Trump frequently turns to Twitter to make policy statements, his account qualifies as a public forum from which the government cannot exclude people on the basis of their views, according to the lawsuit. Twitter users are unable to see or respond to tweets from accounts that block them.

May Day Set For October In Killarney

IMELDA MAY has announced two new dates for this October, as she gets set to take centre stage in the INEC Killarney on October 28 and in University Concert Hall Limerick on October 24. Tickets go on sale this Friday, July 14, at 9am from Ticketmaster and usual outlets. In May Imelda played three sold-out dates at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. Her album Life. Love. Flesh. Blood. entered the Irish charts at number two and spent ten weeks in the top ten. Imelda also recently dropped an incredible live video for album track “When It’s My Time”. Discussing the song she recently shared with NPR that she recorded all the backing vocals herself on the gospel inspired track, stating: “I did a gospel choir on ‘When It’s My Time’. And I tried to make my sound slightly different. And

I named them all so it was easier to mix. I was going, can we go back to Gladys? And I was Gladys and Mable on the other one. And I named my different voices…” Imelda added: “I love those old story songs where you’re taken on a journey from beginning to end. Songs you’re riveted with. Like when you’re in the car and you sit in the driveway, because you can’t turn the radio off, you have to listen to the end of the story. I thought, ‘I’d like to write one of them’. The lyrics are about my family, and my daughter, and myself and my life growing up in Dublin. We didn’t have much money but my parents are fabulous, creative and open-minded people. They gave me art and literature and encouraged me to do whatever was in my heart and

Herald Mixes Up Stormzy & Lukaku In Photo Error THE HERALD newspaper has apologised for mixing up professional soccer player Romelu Lukaku and grime artist Stormzy in a photograph error. An article in Monday’s Herald with the headline “Lukaku ready for work” is accompanied by a photograph of Stormzy - not Lukaku. The photograph used, which sees Stormzy in a Manchester United jacket, was in fact taken at the club’s away kit launch last May in London. Lukaku, who is an Everton striker,

is on the brink of signing a transfer deal with Manchester United. The newspaper’s editor, Alan Steenson, issued an apology on herald.ie, saying: “Hands up, we got it badly wrong. Earlier, we made an error with a picture of Romelu Lukaku that wasn’t him. It was Stormzy. “To be honest, we are totally embarrassed and want to say sorry to all involved and our readers for the error. We will keep our eye on the ball in future.”

I want to do that with my daughter.” Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, Life. Love. Flesh. Blood was recorded over seven days in Los Angeles and features musical contributions from Jeff Beck, Jools Holland and an accomplished group of backing musicians including the core trio of guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant and Alison Krauss) and bassist Zach Dawes (The Last Shadow Puppets, Mini Mansions).

Suits You, Sir CONOR MCGREGOR has revealed an outrageous new range of personalised ‘f*** you’ suits. The Dubliner made the most of his first appearance on stage with Floyd Mayweather ahead of their showdown in August 26 to reveal he is getting into the suit business. The UFC champion predicted he would s knock Mayweather

out inside four rounds as he makes a ambitious boxing debut, with even the suit he wore to the Las Vegas press conference taunting his unbeaten rival. The pinstripes on the suit worn by McGregor spelled out ‘F*** You’. “He’s in a f***ing tracksuit, he can’t afford a suit any more,” he said.

Lotto Fever Grips Castlebar THE man who sold the winning €29m EuroMillions ticket in a Mayo store has said he “feels like Willy Wonka” as speculation over the winner continued this week. Well-wishers were calling throughout the week to Umesh Kumar’s shop on Pound Road in the Mayo town after his Garryduff XL Store sold the winning ticket. The win has been talk of Castlebar since news of the winning ticket emerged. The shop assistant who sold it, Anmol Sagar, 22, told the Irish Sun: “I feel like Willy Wonka.” The engineering student added: “I’m so excited about it all. I was working when the ticket was sold, I was the one who sold the ticket.

“We are a small shop and the owners were away, I was on shift. It feels amazing to think I sold a ticket worth so much money. I’m so excited. “It was my dream to win the Lottery but at least I gave someone else that dream. I always say to people buying their Lottery tickets ‘Don’t forget me when you win’. I hope they don’t! It would be nice to get something.” Owners Umesh and wife Rozalia will receive a €25,000 bonus for their shop selling the winning ticket. The couple, who have a two-year-old son Arjun, moved to Castlebar five years ago after having come to Ireland from New Delhi 11 years back.

WEDDING bells rang out in St Mary’s Cathedral for Róisín Fitzgerald from Kilcummin, Killarney, and Darragh Kivlehan, from Drumcliffe, Sligo, recently. Róisín and Darragh exchanged vows in a Mass led by Fr Kevin Sullivan. They posed for the camera of Trevor O’Donoghue before re-joining their guests for the reception, in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Helping lead the celebrations were the bride’s parents Maura and Eamonn Fitzgerald and the groom’s mother and father Kay and Malachy Kivlehan. Lending their support as bridesmaids were Róisín’s sisters Ciara Bisby and Niamh Dwyer and her friend Gillian Lyons. Darragh’s brothers Paul Kivlehan and Cian Kivlehan were best man and groomsman respectively, with Cian travelling from Melbourne for the wedding. A friend, Damian McEvoy, also took on groomsman duties, with the bride’s nephew Eoin Bisby was pageboy and her nieces Doireann Dwyer, and Aisling and Molly Bisby, joined the groom’s niece Caoimhe Loughlin as flowergirls. Róisín niece and nephew Eabha and Oran Dwyer were ushers. The bride’s niece Doireann Dwyer and her friends from the Aine Murphy Dance Academy received standing ovations when they performed an Irish dance at the reception. Róisín and Darragh first met in Sligo, where they were introduced by mutual friends, and got engaged in Dublin in October 2016. Family and friends travelled from across Ireland, the UK, USA, as well as Melbourne and Singapore, with a large contingent arriving from Sligo. The newlyweds, who will reside in Dublin, honeymooned in Mexico. “We were thrilled that so many of our family and friends were able to join us from around the country and the world – it made the lead-up to and the day itself so special. We had a fantastic few days celebrating. We would like to thank everyone who helped us to put the day together – all of our guests had a great time in Killarney,” said Róisín.

The Bookworm

Reviewed: Invincible Summer by Alice Adams THE perfect read for these months, Alice Adams’s debut novel at first glance appears to be a well-worn plot. But while the storyline treads familiar paths (think David Nicholls’s One Day), it quickly draws you in and grips until the end. The novel follows four friends over the course of 20 years. Eva,

the central character, Benedict, and brother-and-sister Lucien and Sylvie. The quartet are first seen in Bristol, England, lying together on a hilltop. But what at first seems like a hoary coming-of-age tale instead whips itself into something much less fluffy as the characters’ lives unfold, reflecting the age in which they live.

Game of Thrones - 17 Jul 2:00am

Our return to Westeros is almost upon us, as Game of Thrones returns to our screens for its seventh, and penultimate, season. The Season 6 finale left little to the imagination when it came to figuring out the direction of the upcoming new season. Bereft of any real cliffhangers, the super-sized episode positioned three of the main characters as the key players in the war for the Iron Throne: Jon Snow (Kit Harington),

Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). With Cersei, now Queen of Westeros, after staging an epic comeback by murdering her enemies, including the High Sparrow and Margaery Tyrell, via wildfire in the Sept of Baelor, Jon Snow being declared King of the North and Daenerys leading a formidable armada toward Westeros comprised of Unsullied, Dothraki and three dragons, we could be instore for the best Season yet!

Our feet work hard and are vital to our health, comfort and balance, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Foot Health Medical Pedicure

CORNS and calluses mostly develop on the feet or toes and can be very painful to walk on, especially where they press on the nerves surrounding the skin. A callus is a flattened area of thick, hard dead skin that has developed on the sole of the foot where there is a lot of weight and pressure exerted. A corn is a more localised and highly concentrated point of thick hard dead skin, usually located at a pressure point such as under a toe joint. Corns can also develop between the toes due to moisture and friction of one toe against the other.

Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail can occur when the edges of the nails curl into the flesh of the toe. It is painful and if left untreated it can become infected and lead to severe inflammation and pain in the toe. Such problems can be caused by trauma, tight footwear, excessive flattening of the foot causing rotation of the toe, self-treatment with scissors or congenital problems associated with the flesh at the sides of the toes.

Thickened Toenails

Thick nails can be caused by a number of reasons including fungal infections, aging, injury, psoriasis or infections, to name a few. Usually, having thickened nails is more a cause for embarrassment, depending on the underlining development. However, thick toenails can be painful, cause the nail to become brittle and crumble. In some cases, thick nails can become yellow, and it can also be difficult and painful to trim thick toenails. We specialise in thickened nail reductions. Don’t ignore them have them treated.

Pedicures

At Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio we also offer medi-pedicures which include a full pedicure with toenail paint. During the medi-pedicure any foot-health issues are treated. For some clients a regular pedicure just isn’t enough so a medi-pedicure is an ideal solution.

Biters, Beware

A COLOGNE that smells fabulous and also acts as an effective insect-repellent? Bring it on. You see, I feel like a walking feast for critters at this time of year. Many readers will know what I mean, if like me, you’re constantly bitten by bugs when out walking or cycling. This time last year a stroll in Knockreer took a turn for the surreal when I doubled over feeling as if I had been stabbed. A bite or sting from a creature unknown proceeded to turn my leg a fetching shade of purple, then black, as I stumbled back to base in need of first aid. You’d think that would be enough for one summer, but no. A few short weeks later a similar assailant struck again – this time in, of all places, a b ookshop in Tralee. Luckily it was only a short hop across the road from a pharmacy where antihistamine tablets and cream were swiftly administered as that familiar reaction made itself felt. So when I heard of Mrs White’s Unstung Hero, a cologne that also deters those stinging and biting beasties, I was first in the queue to place an order. Most popular and effective insect repellent sprays contain toxic chemicals and smell horrible. The beauty of Unstung Hero it contains an ingredient that renders you “invisible” to mosquitoes, ticks, black fly, wasps and bees. So far so good when I spray it on before sallying forth into the great outdoors – I’ve even had a few compliments on the uplifting scent. See roullierwhite.com for details.

Killarney Credit Union Will Help With Back-To-School Costs WHILE school might seem like a distant memory for young people as they continue to enjoy their summer break, it’s a different story for parents. Many parents in the South Kerry are already gearing up to prepare for the Back to School spend, which has become a mounting financial burden in recent years. Research carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions last year found that school associated costs have increased year on year from 2012. The overall spend for primary school children last year was a substantial €967 per child per year. For secondary school children, it was even higher at €1,474 per child per year. Killarney Credit Union has always been on hand to provide financial assistance to parents in South Kerry as they try to cope with education-related costs. Offering a Back to School loan at a very affordable 6.2% APR rate, Kil-

larney Credit Union can ensure that the loan terms are structured in a way to suit every individual situation best. There are no hidden payments or transaction fees, and the loan is less expensive than using a credit card or moneylender.

Speaking about the range of options available at Killarney Credit Union to help cover school costs, Helen Courtney Power, business development officer, said: “On top of paying for school uniforms,

shoes, books and transport, paying for extra-curricular activities has also become a big expense of the school year. These additional costs can compound the financial stress of the back to school spend. We are encouraging parents who know they will need to borrow to talk to us first at Killarney Credit Union.” Helen added: “Last year we saw a big increase in the number of parents saying they would shop online to cut costs and we would encourage all parents to shop around, both in local shops and online, to see where they can get the best deals. If you do need a loan, pop in to see us at Killarney Credit Union and we can talk you through the best option for your circumstances.” For a €1,000, one-year variable interest rate loan with 12 monthly repayments of €86.08, an interest Rate of 6%, a representative APR of 6.2%, the total amount payable by the member is €1,032.76. Information correct as of July 10.

Food For Thought OUR lunch provides roughly a third of our daily nutritional needs so it’s important to put thought into this meal, particularly for schoolgoing children. Be sure to have quick, easy, healthy lunchbox solutions to hand as the new school year starts in September. It will also help your child learn about good food habits along the way. Safefood has a wealth of tips for a healthy, tasty school lunchbox. To help your child get the most from their lunchbox, try to include the following each day, remembering to gradually introduce any changes over time. One to two portions starchy food like potatoes, rice, pasta, wholegrain or brown bread will keep your child going through the school day. One or more portions of fruit and vegetables, like apples, oranges, bananas, berries or salad in a sandwich/wrap or vegetable sticks, are also key to a healthy lunch. Include one portion of dairy foods like milk, cheese or yoghurt. Small amounts of high-protein foods like deli meats, fish, like tuna or salmon, or vegetarian options like hummus or egg are also excellent additions to any lunchbox. To drink, give your child a small bottle of water or milk instead of juice drinks or fizzy drinks. It’s okay to have treat foods like crisps, chocolate,

cake, biscuits or sweets every now and again for lunch, just not every day – these foods give you too much sugar or fat and many schools won’t allow them as part of a healthy lunchbox scheme. Homemade popcorn and fruit make great snack alternatives too.

Idea to keep your child’s lunch interesting

Theme your lunchbox on a different country, e.g. Italian - try a pasta salad, Mexican - soft tortillas with filling. Straws and brightly coloured drinks bottles can make milk and water more interesting. The following weekly lunchbox planner shows you the potential variety you can have: Monday: Chicken salad sandwich on brown bread, a small bag of popcorn, a piece of fruit, a small bottle of water and a yoghurt. (Some kids may not like salads to begin with so maybe just start them off with some lettuce leaves in a sandwich) Tuesday: Tuna salad wrap, carrot sticks, a cheese portion and a glass of milk Wednesday: Slice of ham and pineapple pizza, fruit of choice (chopped for smaller children), a yoghurt drink and a slice of fruit bread Thursday: Cheese and crackers, veggie sticks, a banana or dried fruit like a small box of raisins and a bottle of water Friday: Pasta salad made with last night’s pasta leftovers and chunks of cheese and vegetables. Follow up with some grapes, a yoghurt and a glass of water

How to keep lunches cool and safe

1. An insulated lunchbox or bag can be used to help keep lunches cool. A small ice pack can also be used or alternatively include a frozen fruit juice carton 2. It is important that lunches are not kept in a warm place such as near radiators or in direct sunlight as this can make a tasty lunch “go off” 3. Discard any perishable foods that haven’t been eaten at the end of the day 4. Wash and dry reusable water bottles, lids and lunchboxes every day in warm soapy water 5. And encourage your kids to wash their hands before eating, including before eating lunch from a lunchbox To download a free copy of Safefood’s lunchbox leaflet, visit www.safefood.eu or find it on Facebook.

Choosing your child’s schoolbag SELECTING a schoolbag can be one of the fun aspects of back-to-school preparations. But be sure to make your choice with care. Carrying a schoolbag that’s too heavy can lead to back pain and damage to the spine. Reduce the risk by buying an appropriate size backpack and making sure the bag is not too heavy. A heavy bag that’s slung over one shoulder can, over the 12 years of schooling, cause chronic back problems that linger into adulthood. Risks include muscle strain, distortion of the natural ‘S’ curve of the spine and rounding of the shoulders. Parents can reduce the risk in many ways, such as buying the child an appropriately sized backpack and making sure the load isn’t too heavy. A schoolbag that weighs more than 10% of the child’s weight is a risk factor, as is holding the bag in one hand by its straps and carrying the bag over one shoulder. Incorrectly packed and fitted backpacks are also risk factors. It’s crucial therefore to buy the right kind of backpack and make sure it’s packed correctly. In addition, show your child correct lifting and carrying techniques. When buying a schoolbag, choose a backpack with a moulded frame and/or adjustable hip strap, so that the weight of the filled backpack will rest on your child’s pelvis instead of their shoulders and spine. The shoulder straps should be adjustable, and the rear of the backpack padded for comfort. To help with packing, the backpack should have a few separate compartments. Canvas backpacks are lighter than leath-

er varieties. Consider buying a backpack with builtin wheels. Children are fashion conscious and vulnerable to peer pressure, so make sure you take your child with you when buying their backpack. The backpack should weigh less than 10% of your child’s body weight – for example, a child of 40kg should carry less than 4kg in their backpack. Ideally, the child in this example should only carry around 2–3kg of books. Pack the heaviest items so they are closest to the child’s back. If the heaviest items are packed further away, this throws out the child’s centre of gravity and causes unnecessary back strain. Make sure that items can’t move around during transit, as this could upset your child’s centre of gravity – use the backpack’s compartments. Adjust the shoulder straps so that the bottom of the backpack is just above the child’s waist – don’t allow them to wear the backpack slung low over their buttocks. When fitted correctly, the backpack should contour snugly to the child’s back, rather than hang off their shoulders. Your child should lift the backpack with a straight back, using their thigh muscles. The backpack should be lifted with both hands and held close to the body. Slip an arm through one shoulder strap, and then the other. If your child has to lean over, their backpack is too heavy, incorrectly fitted or wrongly packed. Make sure your child understands that carrying the backpack over one shoulder will cause back pain and potential injury.

Reaping The Rewards Of Social Farming THE message that farming is fun and inclusive rang out on George Kelly’s farm in Ballymallis on Friday where the concept of social farming was celebrated in style. Social farming is where family farms offer social, health or training supports to a small number of people with particular needs in a supervised programme of farming-related activities. A report into the movement in Kerry was launched by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed at Mr Kelly’s farm where participants celebrated its success. The evaluation report was prepared by Dr Brendan O’Keeffe (Mary Immaculate College), Dr Caroline Crowley (Crowley Research) and Dr Shane O’Sullivan (Limerick Institute of Technology), after

being commissioned by the Kerry Social Farming (KSF) Working Group in 2016, under the umbrella of lead partner South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP). Minister Creed said it was a humbling experience to meet with the participants in the KSF initiative, and he was very pleased to see that it works. “Inclusion isn’t just a word, it’s actions,” said Minister Creed. SKDP chairperson Gloria O’Driscoll also highlighted the input of the other agencies involved such as St John of God Kerry Services, Kerry Parents and Friends Association, North East West Kerry Development, Enable Ireland, Down Syndrome Kerry, Cunamh Iveragh, Local Link Kerry, the HSE and Kerry County Council.

Killarney’s Links With Washington Celebrated A CAPACITY audience gathered at Killarney House on Sunday morning to hear presentations from five speakers on aspects of the life and connections of the McShain family during their occupation of the house from the 1950s to the 1990s, as well as insights into the work of John McShain and others on The White House in Washington DC. The event was organised by the James Hoban Societies of the US and Ireland, which researches and promotes the life and times of Kilkenny-born James Hoban, the original architect and builder of the presidential mansion, in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Programme director Denis Bergin introduced the session and Killarney local

historian Conor Doolan gave an insight into the lives of the McShain family as residents and benefactors of Killarney. New York author Robert Klara, who has written a book on John McShain’s reconstruction of the White House, reported on his extensive interviews with Sr Pauline McShain, including her memories of driving with President Franklin Roosevelt in his specially adapted car during a family visit to his New York estate. Historian Vincent Carmody told of the career of his Listowel-born relative Kathy Buckley, who served three US Presidents as a cook in the White House. Architect Brian O’Connell traced the origins of the American Constitution to documents produced at the Confederation of Kilkenny in 1642.

Nurses Remain

Disappointed & Apprehensive DEER LODGE a new €13 million, 40-bed mental health unit completed in 2015, finally opened its doors on Tuesday. Thirty-one existing residents from the O’Connor Unit on the grounds of the Victorian St Finan’s Hospital transferred to Deer Lodge and an additional nine beds will be opened over the coming weeks. While nurses welcome the new state-ofthe-art building and facilities, they remain gravely concerned that the quality and standard of care including health and safety will be seriously compromised within Deer Lodge due to an out-of-date early 20th-century service delivery model based on custodial care and low skill labour in the state-of-the-art 21st-century building. No new modern service delivery initiatives such as crisis intervention beds or respite care beds set out in A Vision for Change (AVRC 2006) are included in the new building project. Therefore, Deer Lodge will be a major step forward in infrastructural standard but a major step backwards in service delivery concepts. Regrettably, an out of date custodial model of care is specifically being created and advanced in Deer Lodge to match the low skill model of staffing being proposed and will do nothing to advance the mental health services or quality of care in line with A Vision for Change in the county.

The lack of clinically trained staff to advance modern service delivery concepts such as crisis intervention, respite care, assertive outreach and the creation of a rehabilitative, recovery philosophy of care with the aim of discharging service users back to community settings with supports, remains a major disappointment and a missed opportunity to advance the delivery of mental health services in the county. The whole Deer Lodge project is hampered by a poverty of ideas and ambition within HSE management from the start. Nurses therefore remain frustrated, disappointed and apprehensive about the move to Deer Lodge, and are only moving under protest because of a binding Labour Court recommendation issue when agreement could not be reached between the Psychiatric Nurses Association and the HSE in direct negotiations. The solution being imposed by the Labour Court is likely to see a marked increase in nurse retirements within the Deer Lodge over the coming year, with nurses deciding to retire rather than continue to work in a contentious working environment within Deer Lodge where the current staffing arrangements do not have the support or confidence of nurses on the ground. Cormac Williams, Killarney, Psychiatric Nurses’ Association, Kerry

What Is The Future For St Finan’s? PRIOR to its crude abolition in 2014 by the Fine Gael-Labour coalition government, with the tacit agreement of most other Oireachtas members, Killarney Town Council frequently sought clarity from the HSE on what proposals if any it had for St Finan’s Hospital and its attached lands. Many positive proposals and suggestions were forwarded from the then Town Council as to how best the magnificent 1852 Sir Thomas Deane designed building and the valuable land could best be used for the benefit of the wider community. Some of us councillors believed that the building should be home to a wide array of public services or that it could be sub- sectioned into apartments for older persons who wished to live in a community setting close to town. There were also a number of public service uses suggested for the land including recreation space, house building and a burial ground. The HSE acknowledged the motions from Killarney Town Council but little or no progress was made in formulating coherent future plans. Some months ago in Kerry County

Council I placed the matter of the property’s future on the agenda. I spoke of the inevitable disintegration that would take place if the building were left idle for a protracted period and I once more sought to re-emphasise the rich potential that the building and lands had. The horrific recent inferno in the former Our Lady’s Hospital in Cork has focused attention on the terrible fate that can befall a building left standing idle for too long. If such an event occurred in St Finan’s the community would feel a deep shame at the loss of a splendid structure and a sense of betrayal at a rich potential incinerated. Fortuitously for the July 2017 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council I have a motion asking our CEO, Moira Murrell, to detail the progress that she has made in her discussions with the HSE on determining a viable and dynamic future for the land and for the splendid building on the hill overlooking the town and beholding the magnificent mountains. Michael Gleeson (Cllr), Clasheen, Killarney

Grace Centre Stage For An Irish Heart LOCAL singer and Killarney Advertiser columnist Grace Foley is excited to be performing her concert, “An Irish Heart” in Killarney and Kenmare over the coming weeks. Grace will be joined by pianist Jayme Linehan, guitarist Conor Linehan, violinist Lucy Tanner and dancer Scott O’Meara. The concert takes the listener on a journey from Ireland’s well-loved ballads to its best contemporary songs. The Killarney singer said: “I wanted to create a concert that crosses over from Irish music to the classical style of performance. Our regular violinist, Niamh O’Raw, will not be with us for the next few dates as she is abroad perfecting her talent but we are very lucky to be joined by Scotia Ensemble’s violinist, Lucy Tanner.” Grace added: “Jayme and Conor Linehan are from Millstreet and have an incredibly rich background in

traditional music while Lucy and I had our training in classical music. The fusion of the two styles has resulted in something very special and unique.” Grace is also thrilled to now also have Irish dancer Scott O’Meara on-board. “Scott is son of the wonderful dancer and dance teacher, Lisa Hegarty O’Meara, and Scott has won numerous awards at a very young age so the audience really are in for both a visual and musical treat,” said Grace. The concerts will be taking place in St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Killarney, next Tuesday, July 18, and Friday, August 11, and in the Carnegie Arts Centre, Kenmare, on Thursday, July 20, and Friday, August 4. Tickets are available at the door for both concerts and are also available online at www.carnegieartskenmare.ie for the Kenmare concerts. 14.07.17 Grand Prix

Words: Cormac Casey

Austrian F1 LAST weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix was lacking the excitement of the previous round in Baku. I was lucky enough to attend last weekend’s event in Spielberg, Austria, to witness the huge swathes of Dutch orange in the crowd, as around 12,000 turned out for their hero, Max Verstappen. By all accounts it was the largest group of a single colour witnessed at a Grand Prix. Unfortunately all were disappointed by his early demise along with Alonso and Kyvat. After that early incident the race was pretty low key until the closing laps. Bottas, the eventual winner, was being caught rapidly by Vettel and likewise Hamilton in fourth was catching third place Ricciardo. If the race was two laps longer first and second would be reversed and likewise third and fourth. However Bottas hung on to cross the line first, Vettel in second and Ricciardo filled the final step with Hamilton failing to CURRENT STANDING 1 Sebastian Vettel 2 Lewis Hamilton 3 Valtteri Bottas 4 Daniel Ricciardo 5 Kimi Räikkönen

make the podium. This result was important for both Bottas and Vettel in the championship, Vettel increasing his lead over Hamilton by 20 points and Bottas closing within 15 points to Hamilton. The season is turning into a three-horse race. Bottas has only a one-year contract with Mercedes and Hamilton is not at one with the team at present so tension between the two Mercedes teammates is on the cards and Bottas is a stronger character than Rosberg to deal with Hamilton’s mind games. This will pay into the hands of Vettel as the championship progresses. This weekend the F1 circus is in Silverstone, who are stealing the F1 headlines as they exercise a break clause in their current contract. For Irish F1 fans Silverstone is the closest event to visit. However don’t disappear, this appears to be a tactical move to renegotiate terms with the new owners of F1, Liberty Media.

Camouflage Cars

Words: Cormac Casey

Testing In The Alps AS AN avid reader of motoring content, I have always been fascinated by the camouflage cars that appear in the pages of motoring magazines showing them on testing programmes in various parts of the world prior to launch. These images are shot in a very covert way with long lenses slightly blurred to give the impression that they have been shot from a mile away. This impression is further from the truth.

On a recent road trip taking in the fabled driving roads of the Alps I witnessed an Audi A7 in full camouflage descending the Glossglockner High Alpine Pass, two Land Rover Evoques which appeared to be abandoned in a field at the foot of the same pass for all to see, and interestingly an Audi A3 in full camouflage towing a trailer on the same road. Later that day I spotted two Aston Martin DB11s descending the Hahn-

tennjoch Pass rather rapidly, one in full matte black body colour with all sorts of measuring equipment attached to it and another plainclothes keeping it company. And on the Euro Tunnel a fleet of Fords

with all kinds of measuring equipment and laptops on every seat heading in the same direction. All going about their business in everyday traffic to be observed and photographed at will by passers-by. Busted!

BROSNAN

CLARKE

CLARKE

CRONIN

In loving memory of Mary Brosnan late of Rockfield Faha Killarney whose first anniversary occurs on the 17th of July 2016.

In loving memory of a Dear Husband Desmond Clarke, Coolgrean Park Killarney Co. Kerry who died on 16th July 2015.

In loving memory of a Dear Dad Desmond Clarke, Coolgrean Park Killarney who died on 16th July 2015.

In loving memory of Kathleen Cronin, late of 2 Arbutus Drive, Killarney, whose second anniversary occurs on 11th July.

Don’t think if me as gone away, My journey has begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one,

When God was making husbands As far as I can see, He made a special soul-mate Especially for me.

We lost a Dad with a heart of gold, How much we miss him Can never be told He shared our troubles

Goodbyes are not forever, Goodbyes are not the end, They simply mean I’ll miss you, Until we meet again . Missed and thought about everyday, Love your granddaughter Stacey xxx

Just think of me as resting, From the sorrow and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days or years, Think how she must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away, And think of her as living, In the hearts of those she touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And she was loved so much. Forever loved and remembered always by Mam, sisters, brothers, brother-inlaws, Sister-in-laws, Nieces and Nephews xxxxxxxx

2ND ANNIVERSARY BROSNAN

He made a perfect gentleman compassionate and kind, With more love and affection Than you could ever wish to find.

And helped us along If we follow his footsteps We will never go wrong. He was a Dad so very rare

He gave my Darling Husband A heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories Only my heart can hold.

Content in his home and always there. On earth he toiled, in heaven he rests God bless you Dad you were one of the best.

He was someone I could talk to That no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with, ‘til tears ran down my face.

From your loving son Sean, daughterin-law Bridget and grandsons Jonathan and Paul. x

Next time we meet Will be at heaven’s door When I see you standing there, I won’t cry anymore. I will put my arms around you And kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart Will fall back into place.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY CLIFFORD

From your loving wife Maria. x

In loving memory of Mary Brosnan (nee Doona), late of Rockfield, Faha, Killarney, who sadly passed away 17th July 2015. Though you’re no longer with me, Every day I find. In one way or another, You’re back there in my mind. I might hear a piece of music, And at once my mind is stirred. Back to a treasured moment, The two of us have shared. I never try to stop them, I let them just flow through. It’s just my way of spending time, Once again with you. Deeply loved and missed by her husband Gerard, and sons TJ and Junior x Your life was full of loving deeds, Forever thoughtful of our special needs. Today and tomorrow My whole life through, I will always love and cherish you. Forever missed by her Mother Eileen, sisters, brothers and all the Doona and Brosnan family x

In loving memory of my Dear Dad Desmond Clarke, Coolgrean Park Killarney who died on 16th July 2015. Dad He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few, and most of the times his worries went unspoken too. He was there a firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to When in times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of the greatest blessings The man that we called Dad.

In loving memory of Timothy (Timmy) Clifford, Gortaree, Aghadoe, who died on 16th July 2016. On Timmy’s first anniversary, I wish to thank the community nurses, home-helps and his doctor who gave him great care over the years, the staff at Killarney day care center for their kindness. The doctors, nurses, carers and all the staff at UHK. I want to thank the many friends, neighbours and those who travelled to attend his funeral and also those who sent mass cards. A special word of thanks to Fr. Tom Looney for the lovely service and kind words. Thanks to O’Shea’s funeral directors for their guidance and professionalism.

Anniversary Mass on Sunday 23rd July at 11am in Fossa Church.

In the last five years Life has changed so much, You wouldn’t recognise this world For what its worth, Lives have changed as they do, But sadly changed without you, The last five years have been so hard, But don’t get me wrong, They were all we had, We had some laughs along the way, But the tears were never far away, The last five years have Seen some friends go, I’m sure you’ve met them as they flow, And new lives came to bring us joy, And help the pain, that just wont die.

O’DONOGHUE

O’DONOGHUE

In loving memory of a dear Uncle John O’Donoghue, of 4 Holy Cross Gardens, Rock Road and formally of 4 O’Kelly’s Villas and Upper Park Road Killarney, Glencuttane and the Black Valley Beaufort, whose untimely but peaceful passing occurred on Tuesday the 14th of July 2015. R.I.P.

In loving memory of John O’Donoghue, Holy Cross Gardens Killarney whose anniversary occurs on the 14th of July.

Our Lady of Knock Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland all my cares and troubles cease as I kneel with love before you Lady of Knock my Queen of Peace. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered “come to me”, you went away so suddenly I did not get to say goodbye, precious memories never die. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me, He only takes the best. Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal. May the angels take care of you John an uncle I loved so dear, fold your arms around him, keep him always and forever near. Sometimes on the phone having talked about football and the horse racing, they are the wonderful memories I will keep within my heart. My thoughts are ever with you, though you have passed away, and those who loved you dearly are thinking of you today. Silent thoughts sincere and true, from a nephew who though the world of you, no longer in my life to share but in my heart you are always there. It’s lonely here without you, I miss you more each day, for life is not the same to me since you were called away. To your resting place I visit, place flowers there with care, but no one knows the heartache when I turn and leave you there. “Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to your people in times of distress and comforted them in sorrow.” Never forgotten and forever loved, very sadly missed by your loving nephew, football and horse racing buddy, always remembered by: Martin O’Donoghue.

Your smiling face, your cheery ways, The jokes and banter, the good old days, These are the times we often recall, Its when we miss you most of all, The missing link we’ll each cherish, Until we meet again John. Always loved and remembered by your friends Mag, Anne, Kay, Terry, Mary, Markus and all your Europe work colleagues.

Garden Magic Debby Looney

July is the month which brings us the first Hydrangea blooms, says Debby Looney HYDRANGEAS originally come from Japan, and their name comes from the Greek words for water, “hydor”, and cup, “angeion”, (due to the shape of its seed capsules). An apt name, as luckily for us in Kerry the hydrangea loves moisture! These beautiful plants do best in the semi-shade, in a humus rich damp soil. Avoid east-facing and dry sites. There are so many varieties on the market currently it is difficult to choose! One of my favourites is Annabelle, a medium-sized shrub with white flowers. Another beauty is Vanilla Fraise, with white pointed flowers which turn a deep pink as they age. Hydrangea quercifolia has large leaves shaped like oak leaves. Hot Chocolate has beautiful deep burgundy foliage. Mophead varieties, those with large round blooms, and lacecaps, with flat flowers, are often susceptible to the pH of the soil, turning pink in an alkaline soil, or blue in acidic soil. I notice that many suppliers of hydrangeas now write the pH on the label of the plant, indicating the pH of the soil in the container, which will need to be the same in the garden in order to maintain the flower colour. Hydrangea petiolaris is a climbing variety, which is selfclinging, has white flowers, is evergreen and will be happy on a north-facing wall – what a plant! There are dwarf hydrangeas also, Pia and Bobo are two, and they will thrive in pots. Which brings me nicely to the subject of “containers gone bad”. What to do at this stage of the summer when your pots look like they have been through several monsoons and a tornado? I would say there is still enough summer there to start over. There are still a lot of fresh bedding plants and patio plants out there to spruce up your pots, but, if you are disillusioned, there are plenty of permanent solutions also. As I mentioned, dwarf hydrangeas are an option. Dwarf hebes, such as “Lady Ann” or “Black Beauty” have interesting foliage year round, as well as purple flowers in the summer. Something a little different? Bamboos, grasses, ferns and Fatsias are all interesting foliage plants. Topiary specimens such as Bay trees, Buxus and Euonymus are also great for lasting interest. I am slow to admit it, but I have fallen victim to a new trend – Delosperma collecting! These succulent little plants are called Jewels of the Desert, and thrive in dry sunny conditions. Ideal for pots as you can move them to a sheltered spot in the winter – they dislike wet conditions. There really are countless solutions to the pot conundrum, it is just a matter of changing expectations! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

St Teresa Of Calcutta Honoured In Cathedral THOUSANDS of the faithful converged on St Mary’s Cathedral at the weekend as veneration of the relics of St Theresa (Mother Teresa) of Calcutta took place. Queues gathered on Saturday after the 6.15pm Vigil Mass until 10pm when night prayer concluded the evening and also on Sunday following the 12 noon Mass until 8pm, again ending with night prayer. Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016. St Teresa said: “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” Another well-known quote from St Teresa is: “There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of the work. This is where the respect and the

love and the devotion come in - that we do it to God, to Christ, and that’s why we try to do it as beautifully as possible.”

PROLONGED drought has led to severe food shortages across East Africa. Approximately 25 million people are in need of emergency assistance. Trócaire in South Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia focuses on food and water, while in Somalia they are also running health clinics treating people for malnutrition, cholera and other associated health issues. To help with this lifesaving work, there will be a special collection on July 22 and 23.

When It Comes To Gaelic Footwear,

Is Bright The New Black? With more and more intercounty stars sporting brightly coloured footwear, ADAM MOYNIHAN wonders if the unwritten fashion rule of ‘black boots only’ is on its way out

IN RTÉ’S classic football documentary Marooned, which charts the great Páidí Ó Sé’s tenure as Westmeath manager, selector Tomás Ó Flatharta shares a memorable anecdote about a young player at a trial game. “There was one fella,” Ó Flatharta recalls, “he was playing quite well, and I didn’t say anything to Páidí for a while because I knew what his reaction would be.” Eventually he plucked up the courage to voice his opinion. “Páidí, that player there is playing very well.” “Ah he is,” Páidí snapped. “But Jesus, sure he’s wearing a pair of white boots. When did you ever see a player with white boots who was any use?!” It might seem like a suitably oldschool attitude towards fashion for a dyed-in-the-wool GAA man who grew up in West Kerry in the 60s, but black boots have been the accepted norm for Gaelic footballers right up until the very recent past. In fact, the majority of current players still opt for boots that are black, or at least predominantly black. There has, however, been a marked rise in the popularity of alternative colours. In last weekend’s Connacht final, a number of Galway players wore white Adidas Gloros and it’s not uncommon to see the odd pair of blue, red or even luminous yellow boots at both club and county games up and down the country. It used to be the case that if you played football, you wore black Adidas Copa Mundials or World Cups, or black Predators, or maybe black Puma Kings, and that was that. Coloured boots were the calling card of the maverick. Galway hurler Gerry McInerney was somewhat of a trailblazer in this regard. He wore white Nike boots in the late 1980s and while the mullet might have been a fashion statement, he insists the boots were not. He purchased them in America where he was living at the time (he commuted to Ireland for the championship) and he told the Independent in 2011 that the white boots were simply “the comfiest ones in the shop”. With his socks up to his knees and bleach-blonde cornrows, Ciarán McDonald wasn’t exactly your standard footballer but he wore white Predators in the early 2000s as did his Mayo teammate Conor Mortimer. They stood out like a pair of sore thumbs, which I suspect was the idea. Recent proponents of the white boot include Colm Boyle (also Mayo) and Karl Lacey (Donegal). For Kerry, I seem to remember James O’Donoghue wearing white Nikes on occasion but, in general, these guys have been the exception.

It used to be the case that if you played football, you wore black Adidas Copa Mundials or World Cups, or black Predators, or maybe black Puma Kings, and that was that

So why are non-black boots becoming more popular? It’s worth remembering that the footwear worn by GAA players isn’t designed with them specifically in mind. Nike and Adidas are by far and away the most popular brands amongst footballers and hurlers in Ireland but they’re obviously in the business of making soccer boots, not Gaelic football or hurling boots. I’m sure they’re happy that people use their products to play Gaelic games but it’s far too small a market for them to produce specialised GAA gear. That means that GAA style is intrinsically

linked to soccer style, and bright (often garish) boots have become commonplace in the Premier League and on the continent. As with virtually everything else pertaining to soccer these days, the transition is very much financially motivated. Kids want to have the exact same boots as their idols so the likes of Nike come up with the most distinctive and unique designs possible, which naturally makes them more instantly identifiable on TV. Players sign multi-million euro endorsement deals with sportswear companies so they’re often contractually obliged to take to the field in these monstrosities regardless of whether or not they

actually like them. The fact that they’re objectively awful-looking is irrelevant to most youngsters. If Cristiano Ronaldo wears them, they’re cool. Bright colours also stand out more on the shelf; there’s a reason children’s cereals and toys have bright, colourful packaging. And let’s be realistic, the only people forking out upwards of €200 for football boots these days are pressurised parents. I remember watching an Aston Villa game a few years back (I’m actually a Villa fan – no, I don’t want to talk about it) and I felt like there was something unusual about Charles N’Zogbia (aside from the fact that he was walking around the place instead of running and trying like everyone else). And then it hit me. He was the only player on the pitch wearing black boots. The whole thing had gone full circle and it was actually jarring to see a soccer player who didn’t have outlandish, neon footwear. It’s a sobering thought for the purist but it’s not entirely unimaginable that the same thing could happen in the GAA. So prevalent is the trend it has actually reached the stage where it’s difficult to find nice, black boots in stores. It’s wall-to-wall vivid yellows, loud greens and dodgy shades of purple. I went to town one day to buy new black boots but there was such a poor selection I ended up coming home with flamboyant, pink Mercurials. I knew I’d get stick over them but you might as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb. I hadn’t planned on wearing them for football but one night, with my old black boots out of commission, my hand was forced. It was a junior game and to make matters worse we were playing back in Gneeveguilla. I can only imagine what fellas were thinking. And as if the situation wasn’t embarrassing enough already, we were wellbeaten and I missed a penalty. That’s the problem with coloured boots in Gaelic football. You’re drawing unnecessary attention on yourself so you better be able to back it up. Evidently I couldn’t, so that was the last time I wore coloured boots on a football field. At the end of the day it comes down to personal taste so if lads want to wear white boots, either because they like how they look or they want to stand out from the crowd, good luck to them. But for me, Gaelic footballers should wear black. I wouldn’t really consider myself to be a traditionalist or anything, I just think black boots look better. I never thought I’d get to the stage where I’d agree with someone like Páidí ó Sé when it comes to fashion. I must be getting old.

14.07.17 TG4 Munster Senior Ladies Final

Kerry Ladies Crowned Munster Champions

Pic: Anois

THE day was set up for a classic, and in fairness to Kerry and Waterford they didn’t disappoint in sunsoaked Mallow last Saturday, as Kerry were eventually crowned TG4 Munster Senior Ladies champions after a massive struggle against a game Waterford side. In truth Kerry were the superior team all through the game, but the Deise girls will certainly look back on a couple of missed goal chances that could have landed them their first Munster senior title since 2002. The first chance came in the 36th minute when Maria Delahunty rasped the crossbar after a slick passing move, whilst the unlucky Delahunty hit the bar for the second time with just three minutes left in the contest, after she intercepted a poor Kerry kickout. A goal for Waterford at that stage would have put them four points ahead, and with time running out it was difficult to see how Kerry would recover at that stage. Instead points from Laura Rogers and two from the mercurial Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh sealed the deal for the Kingdom. After a poor enough opening half in which massed defences were the order of the day, the sides went into the interval level with a goal from a penalty from Waterford goalkeeper Katie Hannon helping the Deise to 1-3, with Kerry scoring six points from Lorraine Scanlon, Sarah Houlihan,

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy SO IT looks like the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand is going down to the wire. The second test took was won in epic fashion last Saturday morning in Wellington, a much better game than the loss the weekend before for the tourists. Warren Gatland’s men clearly had their homework done, however they made pretty hard work of the game with all the handling errors and soft penalties given away. The Irish men again proved to be the proverbial

Amanda Brosnan and two coming from the boot of Ni Mhuircheartaigh. The sin binning of Kerry’s Anna Galvin in the eighth minute didn’t unduly upset the Kingdom, with Kerry actually outscoring Waterford by three points to two during Galvin’s 10 minutes on the sideline. The second half of the game was a much livelier affair and after three early points Kerry appeared to be coasting. Delahunty hit the crossbar but Grainne Kenneally levelled matters with a palmed goal after great play from Aileen Wall. Kerry’s reply was immediate, and Sarah Houlihan goaled straight from the kickout. As the game ebbed and flowed, Kenneally who was now stationed at full forward, palmed her second goal of the game to push Waterford one ahead in the 47th minute. There was still time for drama with Delahunty hitting the crossbar for the second time, before the three late Kerry points settled the contest.

workhorses on the day with Tadhg Furlong and Sean O’Brien putting in epic performances. Furlong has been likened to a Sherman Tank in the New Zealand press, a true honour for the Leinster man and O’Brien affectionately known as the “Tullow Tank” was sublime. Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray put in a great shift with the latter scoring another try from close range to become the only Northern Hemisphere player to score a try in 4 tests against the All Blacks. A true danger man indeed. Some people will point out that Sonny Bill Williams red card was the difference however the All Blacks were their usual defiant selves and

Kerry will point to outstanding performances from player-of-the-match Aislinn Desmond, Lorraine Scanlon, Ciara Murphy, Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh and Sarah Houlihan for setting them on their way while Waterford had fine performances from Michelle McGrath, Aileen Wall, Michelle Ryan and Emma Murray.

Points from Laura Rogers and two from Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh sealed the deal

Kerry: Laura Fitzgerald Eilis Lynch, Aislinn Desmond, Aisling Leonard, Denise Hallissey Ciara Murphy Caroline Kelly, Lorraine Scanlon (0-2), Emma Sherwood, Amanda Brosnan (0-1) Anna Galvin, Sarah Leahy, Sarah Houlihan (1-4, 1f) Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh (0-6, 2f) Laura Rogers (0-1); subs: Aisling O’Connell (Sarah Leahy), Hannah O’Donoghue (A Galvin inj) Waterford: Jessica Fitzgerald (1 goal pen), Megan Dunford, Caoimhe McGrath, Kate McGrath, Dearbhaile Ni hAodha, Karen McGrath, Michelle McGrath, Mairead Wall, Emma Murray, Roisin Tobin, Grainne Kenneally (2 goals), Katie Murray, Aileen Wall, Maria Delahunty (0-3f)), Michelle Ryan (0-2) Subs Aoife Murray (0-1)(K Murray) Referee: Jason Mullins (Limerick).

put up a display which made you wonder who had the extra man. The first red card since 1967 for the All Blacks with Sonny Bill receiving a four-week ban, he has been vilified in the local press and has gone from proverbial hero to zero following this sending off. Here’s hoping weekends decider proved to live up to the hype and that the Lions can follow up on the series win four years ago in Australia. Garlands men will have their work cut out as the All Blacks will be smarting and like the injured wildcat, will pose a dangerous threat. Either way a mouthwatering decider is on the cards. Come on the British and Irish Lions!

Kerry Senior Football Championship Roundup Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald East Kerry 3-24, St Brendan’s 4-18: This was an amazing game which went to extra time before East Kerry introduced the talented Fossa man and Kerry minor captain David Clifford. He scored the match winning goal for a victory that looked so unlikely with Brendan’s holding a commanding eight points’ lead in normal game time with just nine minutes left in the clock. Cometh the hour cometh the man and so often have we seen David Clifford score those magical goals. St Brendan’s will wonder how they lost this game both in normal time and again in the extra time. Shane O Connor scored 2-3 for them in the first half when they led 4-6 to 0-10. East Kerry fought back after the interval with points by Dara Roche and Jack Sherwood but Brendan’s were still to the fore. Jack Sherwood scored a goal to cut the leeway but Brendan’s should have sealed it kicking three bad wides. They still led by three points as the game came to a close but Fintan Coffey scored an equalising goal after good work by Brian O’Donoghue and Con O’Mahony. So it went into extra time. East Kerry trailed once more at the end of the first period of extra time 2-21 to 4-16. Jack Sherwood levelled the scoring and then Clifford scored the winner. Top scorers for East Kerry were Jack Sherwood on 1-5 and Dara Roche on 6 points, three of these from play and three from frees. This game will bring on the East Kerry team and they will enter the quarterfinals with renewed hope from this high scoring contest.

West Kerry 1-18 (aet), Legion 0-18 West Kerry set up very defensively for this one aiming to deny possession to Legion danger men James O’Donoghue and Conor Keane, but to little effect in the opening period with this duo scoring three points within the first five minutes. Conor Keane was magnificent scoring in total six points from play and two more from frees. West Kerry responded with four points, but they also kicked nine wides in that first half. The Legion defence was under pressure from Eanna Ó Conchúir and

the two Ó Sés, Dara and Tomás. Legion led at half time by nine points to eight. Two West Kerry points after the interval gave them a one-point lead. Legion fought back with points from Conor Keane (2) and a pointed free by James O’Donoghue.to give them the lead. Brain Kelly saved a good shot from Declan O‘Sullivan but the inrushing Dara Ó Sé sent the rebound to the Legion net. This goal put West Kerry ahead once more, but Legion refused to surrender and finished the stronger after Jamie O’Sullivan hit three great points. It ended level at full time 1-15 to 0-18. West Kerry took the initiative in extra time even though they lost the influential Éanna Ó Conchúir to a black card. Two points from Dara Ó Sé and a point by James Crean sent the divisional side in to the quarter finals. Top scorer for the winners was Dara Ó Sé. He scored 1-4 from play and a point from a free.

WINS FOR KENMARE AND SOUTH KERRY In the other two quarter finals Kenmare Shamrocks defeated Feale Rangers 0-17 to 0-12. The real star here and top scorer for Kenmare was Sean O’Shea, who captained Kerry to win last year’s All Ireland minor final. His move to midfield to mark Anthony Maher was decisive. He scored seven points, three from play and four from frees. Feale Rangers’ top scorer was Conor Cox on nine points, seven of these from frees. South Kerry proved too strong for a disappointing Dingle side winning by 1-13 to 0-10. Their top scorer was Ronan Hussey who scored 1-5 and he should have scored a goal in the 21st minute when he was put through by Brendan O’Sullivan but he was well off target. For Dingle Paul Geaney scored six points, five of these from frees. Mixed news for the Kerry players on the South Kerry team. Killian Young was very impressive after his long lay off, but Bryan Sheehan had to go off injured. The winners for the above matches will now join Dr Crokes, Rathmore, Kerins O’Rahillys and Austin Stacks in the quarterfinals. These games will not be played for quite a while, depending on

Kerry’s progress in the c ’ship. Kerry will play their quarterfinal on July 30.

KERRY LADIES Two late points by the very experienced Louise NÍ Mhuircheartaigh clinched the Munster Ladies football final at Mallow on Saturday last. Kerry defeated Waterford by 1-14 to 0-15.

A medal at the MTB (mountain bike) National Championships and a podium finish at the International Suir Valley 3 Day. How are things going for Killarney CC in general? Brilliant. Dr Crokes Club

UNDER 12 COUNTY FINAL: Having topped their group, the club’s U 12 ladies had home advantage, over group runners up Kilcummin, in the final of Div. 4 County League. Their meeting in the earlier group stages proved to be a very entertaining affair, and all suggestions were that this game too would go down to the wire. Dr.Crokes got an absolute dream start when the first three attacks resulted in three goals, the first was from team captain Katie McCarthy (1-01 overall) and was followed in quick succession by Leah McMahon and Pia Hickey who both finished with a goal and two points. It was going to be extremely difficult for any opposition to gather themselves from such a blistering start, but as one expected from Kilcummin, respond they did, having attack, after attack on Crokes goal. Jocelyn Hickey, Teagan O’ Sullivan and Saoirse O Sullivan stood firm in the half back line as did Alicia Keane and Emer Finn, when introduced, and along with sweeping defending from Selina Thawiset Collins, the towering Laura O’ Shea at full back, and Ali O’Donoghue, the home side stemmed the tide and set the play up for the forwards to add to their opening tally. Sarah Cooper, who had just arrived home that morning from the U.S.A., duly obliged and scored the first of her three points as did Síofra Randles to leave the team on a commanding lead at half time. Credit to girls they continued keep up the high standard they had set for themselves. Sadhbh Stack, Cara O’ Sullivan and Gráinne Byrne were shining examples of the teams work rate. Full forward Sinead Oliver, who was a thorn in the side of the opposition throughout, had a goal for the first score of the restart. Kilcummin continued to demonstrate great determination and it took the stalwart contributions from Sinead Byrne, Clodagh McGorrigan, Ella Barrett, and great net minding from Holly Cronin to bring the team the county title on a score of 4-10 to 2-05. Best wishes to Keira Geaney for a speedy recovery from her injury and Amy O Connor who’ll be home from Dublin by the time this hits the press. See ye both after the summer holidays for the East Kerry.

Killarney Legion

CO.CHAMPIONSHIP: Killarney Legion 0-18 West Kerry 1-18 (after extra time). Poor result, poor game and a poor performance from the Legion. After a bright opening which saw them race into a three point lead that was as good as it got for the seniors. When one compares this to the high tempo, creative focused aggressive display away to Dingle in the Club Championship it’s hard to believe it was the same side. Littered with basic errors the amount of ball that was lost in the tackle or badly kicked ran well into double digits. West Kerry played a simple enough game realizing that all they really had to do was engage in contact strip the ball and make progress in a direct fashion despite this it was a constant feature of the Legion’s play right to the end. They were also aided by a real lack of intensity by the Legion which led to any real cutting edge and eventually West Kerry ground out the win they deserved for perseverance. Performance Academy in Killarney and is coached Bobby Enright, started powerlifting at the age of 47, two-and-a-half years ago.
