‘Were There At The Worst Moment In My Life And Helped Ease The Pain In Extraordinary Ways’
AN AMERICAN visitor who tragically lost his wife in an accident in Killarney last month has expressed his thanks to the people of the town who rallied to his side. Don Theiler this week wrote to Killarney Gardaí paying tribute to the many locals who supported him, telling the Gardaí and the community: “You were there at the worst moment in my life and helped ease the pain in extraordinary ways, most especially with the selfless help of some wonderful people.” Mr Theiler and his wife Janet had been on holiday in Ireland when Janet tragically lost her life in a cycling accident in the Gap of Dunloe. “We were concluding our trip and arrived In Killarney on the evening of May 29 with a day to spend in Killarney before departing for the United States early on the morning of the 31st,” said Mr Theiler. “We decided to rent bikes on the 30th and see the sights on the lakes in Killarney National Park and the Gap of Dunloe. All was going well until Janet rounded an extremely sharp turn on the very narrow road in Dunloe Gap and struck a trailer full of lambs being pulled by a truck. She was killed in the accident.” What followed was an extraordinary outpouring of kindness and help from everyone he encountered following this tragedy, especially Killarney Gardaí, added Mr Theiler. “The police, every one of them, were gentle, thoughtful and considerate in the manner they dealt with my friend Roy and me.” Mr Theiler stated the Gardaí “went above and beyond what anybody would reasonably expect in assisting” the family. “They provided transportation to meet our every need, including a long trip to Cork for the cremation of the body so that we could take it back on the plane with us on Friday, June 2, only three days after the accident,” said Mr Theiler. “They also took us back up to the site of the accident so that my stepdaughter Jennifer, who came out to help me, could see where her mother had died. They picked us up and dropped us off at the airport and anywhere else we needed to go. At the airport when Jennifer arrived, they provided a separate room where we could meet and grieve. They helped make travel arrangements and helped cancel commitments and flights that had been made previously.” Mr Theiler also thanked others in the community who showed kindness. “Greta Doyle and her husband at
the Algret B and B provided rooms for Jennifer and myself as we made arrangements and would not accept any payment,” he said. “I asked the police if there was a quiet pub where my friend Roy and I could get a pint. I couldn’t eat but I did need something to dull the pain and shock. Gavin, proprietor of The Speakeasy Bar, made sure we had space in a quiet back corner of his establishment where we could have a drink and grieve without being disturbed every night we were in Killarney. Almost needless to say we did not pay for the pints. Gavin came in on Thursday, his night off, just to wish us well as we prepared to return to the States the next morning. “I was finally able to get some food down on Thursday evening and the police arranged for us to eat in a private corner of Bricin Restaurant and Boxty House, one of your fine restaurants downtown. Again when we went to pay for the meal, we were informed that it was on the house.” Mr Theiler added: “Michael O’Shea, the director from O’Shea’s Funeral Home, was unfailingly considerate and helpful in many ways. When it came to billing he handed me a hand-written note and told me to pay it when I could. He did not even ask me for any contact information. “People we did not know placed flowers at the accident site. It touched my heart deeply to see this tribute to a wonderful woman that they did not know.” Mr Theiler added: “Immediately after the accident, my feelings were that I wanted to get out of Ireland and never return. By the time we got on the plane to make the sad trip back to our home, less than 64 hours after the accident, I looked forward to returning to your wonderful city to thank each of you who so thoughtfully opened yourselves to us in such a selfless and generous way. We would like to visit and celebrate the generosity and thoughtfulness of the people of Killarney, including the individuals mentioned above, and most of all the following police who directly helped us in this dark time in our lives: Brendan O’Donovan, Denis O’Mahony, Chris Manton and Leo Randles. “Thank you, Killarney, you will be forever in our hearts. As I told Leo and Brendan on the afternoon before we left, I have never spent a more remarkable two and a half days under the most terrible of circumstances.”
Thank you, Killarney, you will be forever in our hearts
Editor's View Words: Eve Kelliher JUST weeks ago Don and Janet Theiler were enjoying a holiday in Killarney when tragedy struck and Mrs Theiler lost her life in a cycling accident in the Gap of Dunloe. Yet In the midst of his grief for his beloved wife, Mr Theiler wanted to express his gratitude to the community for the solidarity and kindness shown to him. The letter this generous-spirited man wrote this week is as heartbreaking as it is heartfelt. Having read our online story highlighting his message, many readers were swift to get in touch to express their condolences to Mr Theiler and their pride at the spirit of humanity shown. An email from a reader on Thursday sums it up: “The article has reached me, all the way across the world in New Zealand and it moved me to tears. Please pass on my condolences to Mr Theiler from the other side of the world.”

Common decency at its best” “Such a sad story, but such an important message... always be kind xx” “Brings a tear to the eye but a remarkable illustration of human decency and the values of Killarney people & businesses and our Gardaí and other agencies. Hats off to all those named and who helped this family in their darkest hour” “I could hardly finish reading this. It’s very emotional but it doesn’t surprise me at all. Some of the best people live in Killarney!” “Well done to everyone who stepped up to the mark for this man under such awful circumstances” “So proud my mum and dad come from Killarney, and so glad the people of Killarney are so compassionate”
Gardaí Offered Every Level Of Support SUPERINTENDENT FLOR MURPHY of Killarney Gardaí said he was proud of his team who “went beyond what was expected of them to help in what were very tragic circumstances”. He added: “In this situation, Mr Theiler was on holiday in another country and it was very important to offer him every level of help and support from An Garda Siochána. We are a community-based policing service and were delighted to be able to help in every way we could.”

Briefs ... Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium News Safety On Port Road To Host Munster Football Final
KILLARNEY MUNICIPAL DISTRICT will carry out speed surveys along Port Road to determine if vehicles are travelling in excess of the 50km limit. If these surveys indicate that vehicles are travelling in excess of the speed limit, then a feasibility report will be prepared and submitted to the TII. This update came as a reply to a motion by Councillor Brendan Cronin who asked the roads department to urgently provide safety measures for the Port Road residents, to address their concerns regarding speed and road safety when exiting their homes, as well as concerns about pedestrian safety and the “deplorable” road surface. This section of road has been submitted to the TII for a pavement improvement and the council is currently preparing pavement design documents for submission to the TII for funding available.
New Speed Limit For Glenflesk
IT’S OFFICIAL! Munster GAA has confirmed that the Munster Senior Football Championship Final will take place in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. The showpiece decider, between Kerry and Cork, will unfold at 2pm on Sunday, July 2. And Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce is regarding the clash and keynote weekend as a prime opportunity to impress the IRFU. Fitzgerald Stadium is included in the Irish bid for the Rugby World Cup as a venue if Ireland is named
as host nation. News that the Munster final would be held in Killarney came on Monday. That morning the Cork County Board released a statement confirming that Páirc Ui Chaoimh will not host either of next month’s Munster senior finals. It had been hoped that the venue would be ready in time for the 2017 provincial deciders. Cork County Board was informed that morning that the scheduled handover date of June 18 would not now be met, according to the state-
ment. “There are still some commissioning works to be completed and these will be finished by July 7. The first game in the new stadium will take place in mid-July,” it added. Ger Lane, Cork County chairman, said: “Clearly we are disappointed, but we want everything to be pristine before the stadium hosts its first major games. “We want to be certain that all the expectations for this tremendous new facility will be fully met and we are satisfied that this will be the case by mid July.”
CLLR JOHN SHEAHAN welcomes the 60km speed limit for Glenflesk Village. “I have raised this issue on many occasions with Kerry County Council. It is good news for the pedestrians, cyclists and motorists crossing the road to visit the church or to go to the supermarket”.
Woodlawn Resurfacing
RESURFACING works on the Woodlawn Road from the Woodlawn junction to Dromhall Park are scheduled to be carried out in the third quarter of the year. The confirmation came from Kerry County Council following a notice of motion from Councillor Brendan Cronin who said resurfacing in this area was urgently needed “as this road is in terrible condition”.

What Would A Cable Car Mean For Kerry Tourism?
Facebook Reaction “There is a cable car system at Llandudno in North Wales that runs to the top of the town’s headland (the great Orme). But there are lots of days it can’t operate because of the wind, it doesn’t have to be very strong to make it unsafe for the cable cars” “The late Paddy Mac always said that we should go ahead with this project 35 years ago. My opinion only would not suit Killarney with wildlife and commercialising Killarney. Would have a big effect on our National Park. We have protected this for 260 years” “Keep Killarney as it is. It is a safety and environment issue and could become very expensive” “We don’t need it, leave Killarney as it is” “No! Please, NO!” “No, too dangerous especially after the winds we’re getting lately. Plus what are they thinking ruining our National Park. It would be more in their line improve and add to the so called cycling lanes” “Watch the episode of the Simpsons about the monorail” “Absolute moronic idea. Only possible place for one would be to take people up to the top of Torc where at the top they could then relax and enjoy the view. Still a stupid idea” “Don’t bother!! They’d only do the usual Mickey Mouse job” “Gimmick.......”
Killarney Advertiser cartoonist Martin Carey gives his take on the idea of a cable car in Killarney.
Eve Kelliher explores a suggested additional way of viewing of Killarney and Kerry FINDING a super-swift way of seeing as much as possible in as short a time as possible is what most holidaymakers seek. Blame it on the frantic pace of today’s travel scene or our ever-diminishing attention spans – particularly when we are on holiday. But should visitors land in Killarney with only 24 hours or less to spend here, do they have adequate options to get a rapid overview of our town? That’s why we were so intrigued by a proposal to develop a cable car tourist attraction in Kerry, which is likely to be examined in detail next year. When we floated the concept in a story on our website this week, the reaction was fast and – in some cases – furious (the word “No!” featured frequently). Many viewed it as intrusive and un-
Reaction online to the idea was fast & – in some cases – furious
feasible but occasionally we came across a reader who saw the benefits – for instance for allowing access to people who might not otherwise be able to get to mountains or high ground.
The idea was proposed by Councillor Michael Cahill who told Killarney Advertiser it was inspired by a conversation with the late Ernie Evans of the Glenbeigh Hotel. “Ernie had been a member of the then Bord Fáilte and I remembered him discussing the idea with my father. I raised the issue around two years ago at council level and it’s being included in the Kerry County Council tourism strategy,” said Councillor Cahill. While it is still early days, Kerry County Council informs us that it is a medium-term objective in the Kerry Tourism Strategy adopted last year. “As such, it is a very preliminary stage and the council is looking at options for such a facility at sites around the county,” stated the council.

Bird’s Eye View LET’S for a moment allow our minds to whizz along like the mode of transport under discussion and imagine the possibilities a cable car would open up to tourists, both short and long-stay alike. The need for such an attraction begs the question: Are we hiding too much of what Killarney has to offer because there is no whistle-stop means like this
of seeing everything? Zipping along overhead on a cable car could also result in less damage to any protected areas or sensitive grounds below. While red bus tours, town trains, jaunting cars and boat, bike, waterbus and walking trips are unrivalled ways of exploring Killarney, there is a lot to be said for an accessible, airborne tour of the town and its hinterland. Several years ago, I enjoyed a hot air balloon trip over Killarney. And
although Killarney born and bred, I would feel there is no argument that a bird’s eye view gives you an extremely welcome and very different overview of our locality’s many attractions. A cable car also ensures Killarney is more accessible for people of every ability. And as an added bonus, following a cable car trip, it’s fair to say a shortstay visitor who may not otherwise have had a chance to see all Killarney has to offer would be more likely to plan a return visit to explore further.
“From Killarney, living in the French Alps now, cable cars are everywhere allowing people access to mountains who might otherwise not be able... short-sighted thinking saying they will ruin the mountains when in fact they will allow better access. They usually bring you to open plateau high ground, although being Ireland I can’t see them getting right” “Absolutely NO...Killarney National Park is ours to protect and conserve for generations to come...” “People come to see the Lakes/Muckross etc from the ground but, I think it would be a brilliant idea” “Every couple of years this gets dragged out again... And again.... NO!!” “Think it’s a great idea...only place is the front of Strickeen to the top. It would never be let near Torc” “A light mountain railway as well, like in Alps ” “This was suggested many years before at several of the old coordinating committee meetings that used to be held every week for mutual help and promoting tourism in Kerry. It was thought by some people to be a wonderful idea to have this cable car go to the summit of Torc. It was feasible at the time, as costs were not prohibitive, as they have become since. I think some were all for it, but many said it would. Be next to impossible to run it properly or to have insurance in case of disaster. So it was eventually dropped…” “NO, NO, NO” “Me and my partner went down to the cable car in Cork. I t was worth going into it (€10 pp). We were on the mountains and spent the day walking. The cable car is awesome…. have some beautiful pics I took from the cable car; think it would make a huge difference to tourism!” “No, keep Killarney natural”

THE cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District Councillor Brendan Cronin cut the tape on improved facilities for members of the public and a new meeting room at Killarney Town Hall yesterday. Killarney Town Hall has been renovated recently to enhance the public counter area at the main foyer for the benefit of customers and those availing of services at the MD office. There are currently 33 council staff based at the offices on Kenmare Place including the new Municipal District Officer, Eileen O’Donoghue, new Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, and the new Tourism and Economic Development Officer, Maria Ní Cheallaigh. Cllr Cronin said he was delighted to open the new facilities at the Town Hall: “I am particularly delighted to open the new chamber for Municipal District meetings given that my late father, Cllr PJ Cronin, opened the Council Buildings in Tralee when he was chairman of Kerry County Council in April, 1989.”
New Crest And Chain Of Office Unveiled
Cllr Brendan Cronin, cathaoirleach, Kerry County Council/ Killarney Municipal District with councillors Bobby O’Connell, John Jope Culloty and Niall Kelleher.
A NEW crest and chain of office for the Municipal District (MD) has been unveiled. The MD had been using the chain of the former Killarney Town Council which has now been replaced by a new one bearing a crest designed to reflect the various aspects of the wider Municipal District area. The piece was designed by Catherine Conway, a Kilkenny-based designer, and incorporates elements of the natural environment, landscape, cultural, literary and built heritage, and other aspects of the district.

Anger At Plan Proposed For Green Area A PROPOSAL to remove part of a green area and replace it with car-parking spaces in one of Killarney’s longest-established residential areas has sparked anger. Killarney Municipal District Council has drawn up provisional plans to replace some
of the green space in front of house in Bishop Moynihan Crescent. This has been done with a view to extending the High Street car park, offering 30 new parking spaces. The issue was among those discussed at a residents meet-
ing on Monday night and also generated furious comments on social media. “This area is a landmark part of the town – it is a very old and very precious part of Killarney and I am totally against any proposal to remove part of the green area,” said Cllr Donal Grady.

Mountain Rescue Heroes Save Two Climbers’ Lives A US COUPLE were rescued after being trapped for six hours on the MacGillycuddy Reeks last Friday night. The Texan visitors, Benjamin Menke and Archana Sheth, called for help after they became disorientated following a day’s walking. Kerry Mountain Rescue Team received the callout at 7.30pm and identified the climbers’ position us-
ing SARLOC, a system that can help locate walkers using mobile phone technology. They were reached by the Team at approximately 10pm in steep ground on the southern side of Carrantuohill. Conditions on the mountain were challenging with strong wind and rain. Eighteen members of KMRT attended the callout which concluded at 1.30am.

Two Mile School To Reopen As Community National School Call For Reassessment Of Reconfiguration Process
Above: Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin at Two Mile School.
IT WAS confirmed this week that Two Mile National School in Killarney is to reopen as a Community National School in September. The school did not open last September and has been empty since then, said Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin, who welcomed the reopening. In January of this year, Deputy Griffin organised a meeting between local people and officials from Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) to explore
the prospect of the school becoming a Community National School. Arising from this exploratory meeting, a wider consultative meeting was organised by the local community, where Deputy Griffin was called upon to formally witness the unanimous support in the community for the community school proposal. “Since then, formal efforts have been ongoing to finalise the process of re-opening the school and I have been liaising closely with the local commu-
nity, Minister for Education and Kerry ETB,” said Deputy Griffin. “I am delighted that this day has come, after many months of hard work by the local community, Kerry ETB and the Bishop of Kerry. “I am glad to have played my part in ensuring that this fine school will re-open in September to serve the needs of the local and wider community. I want to pay tribute to everybody involved in this effort and it is great to have such a positive outcome.”
THE Education Equality group has expressed alarm at reports that Two Mile School is to reopen in September under the patronage of the local Education and Training Board. Following parental surveys in 2013, Killarney was one of 25 areas where parents were promised an Educate Together national school under the “divestment” plan. Cahorreigh National School, known locally as Two Mile School, will now re-open as a Community National School, however. Education Equality says that CNS schools are “not truly equality-based schools and do not treat children of all belief backgrounds with equal respect because of the way in which they are segregated during the school day”. Responding to the recent announcement, Education Equality chairperson Sarah Lennon said: “This is not what parents in Killarney want or deserve. “Any school that divides children up according to their parents’ beliefs must give rise to serious concerns. Segregation is something we should be working against, rather than actively promoting.” Meanwhile Educate Together called for a full reassessment of Education Minister Richard Bruton’s “reconfiguration” process and that a new process be formulated “that considers the wishes of families, rather than Church interests”. Educate Together CEO Paul Rowe said the announcement on Two Mile’s reopening as a Community National School was “disappointing for parents in Killarney, who have been let down”. “The state needs to take control of this process, so that the needs of local communities, and not Bishops or religious orders, are central, and so that real change can happen nationwide,” he said.

No Obstacle Too Great For Killarney Fundraisers
THE memory of their beloved daughter Molly McCarthy-Ashe has inspired Johann Ashe and Sheila McCarthy to generate funds for the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. Johann and Sheila together with Molly’s brother Cian and friends will embark on what is regarded as Ireland’s toughest mental and physical endurance challenge, Hell & Back, in Bray, Co Wicklow, this weekend. “We are doing the 12km obstacle course tomorrow in Killrodery Farm in Bray in aid of the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation and in memory of my daughter Molly McCarthy-Ashe,” said Johann. The Jack & Jill nurses helped care for Molly, who sadly passed away at just a year and a half in November 2015. “It is such an amazing charity that
gives home help to sick children and their families,” said Johann. This is the second event the group is attempting. “We did a charity parachute jump last year for them as well,” said Johann. “My partner and I had three of the best nurses in Sheena O’Sullivan, Karen Lovett and Cathy Kerins looking after little Molly. It’s a charity that’s very close to my heart and I will always do what I can for them.” And Karen Lovett and her husband Tom together with nurses Aisling Devitt, Michelle Conheady and Michelle O’Loughlin will take on the challenge this weekend, as will friends Frank and Joey Culloty and Alan O’Sullivan. Nostalgic Visit To Killarney House For Owner’s Grandnephew KNOWN as “the man who built Washington” John McShain left a wonderful legacy in Killarney with his former residence, Killarney House, due to open to the public next month. On Wednesday, Mr McShain’s grandnephew, John McShain Junior, and his wife Cindy, were given a private tour of Killarney House and Gardens, by Killarney House general manager Pat Dawson and caretaker Harry O’Donoghue, whose family served the previous owners of the house, the Earls of Kenmare as well as the McShains. The couple, who were on a visit to Ireland from Tennessee, were hugely impressed with the newly refurbished house and gardens. John McShain was instrumental in the construction of The Pentagon, the Jefferson Memorial, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Library of Congress annexe and Washington National Airport, as well as the 1949–52 reconstruction of the White

House. Mr McShain also built the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, New York. John McShain Junior and Cindy McShain were on a tour of Ireland with friends and were delighted to get a preview-guided tour. “John was hugely impressed with the restoration of Killarney House and the recreation of the Gardens,” said general manager Pat Dawson. Mr McShain said his cousin, Sr Pauline McShain, the only child of John and Mary McShain, will be thrilled when he tells her of what has been achieved at the family’s former home. “It was an honour and a privilege to meet John and Cindy and to be able to thank the McShain family personally for its generosity in making so much of the Killarney Estate available to the public,” said Mr Dawson. The Killarney House and Gardens general manager asked the couple to pass on his best wishes to Sr Pauline McShain on behalf of the staff of Killarney National ark and the people of Killarney.

Tune Up To Celebrate Kerry School Of Music’s 35th Birthday A MIDSUMMER gala will be a fitting way to celebrate Kerry School of Music’s landmark 35th birthday. Kerry School of Music was founded in September 1982 by Tralee musician Aidan O’Carroll and over the years it has evolved into a major institution providing training in music and dance at seven centres across the county and changing the cultural landscape of the county through numerous recitals and concerts many of which are free and open to all. Since 1990 the School has provided music and dance tuition in Killarney (its second largest centre after Tralee) firstly at Aras Phádraig and more recently at Holy Cross Primary and the Church of the Resurrection Community Centre on Park Road. Past pupils have reached the highest pinnacles of the performing arts right around the world. Past students from Killarney have included ’cellist and choral conductor Amy Ryan, traditional fiddler Niamh Ní Charra, Eamonn Kelly bursary award winner Niall Crowley and Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the
Year Megan O’ Neill. The midsummer gala takes place in Killarney’s Franciscan Friary on Thursday, June 22, at 8pm. International lyrical soprano and one of Kerry School of Music’s foremost alumni Miriam Murphy is flying home especially for the concert. She will sing Panis Angelicus and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum accompanied by the Kerry Chamber Choir and Orchestra. The multi-award-winning Light Opera Society of Tralee (LOST) will perform, as will Kerry Chamber Choir. The school’s combined senior and junior orchestras as well as its flute orchestra and children’s choir will perform as will winners of the Kerry School of Music Musician of the Year and Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year. Former students will travel from across Ireland, Great Britain and the USA to join in the celebration on the night. Tickets can be got from the Friary office or directly from Kerry School of Music. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door on the night.

Johnny Buckley Teams Up With Gaelscoil’s Young Football Stars EXCITEMENT reached fever pitch at Gaelscoil Faithleann National School on Wednesday as Johnny Buckley put the pupils through their paces in an eagerly anticipated coaching session. Darragh O’Donoghue, a pupil in second class, won a prize in Daly’s Supervalu which included training for himself and his schoolmates led by the Kerry and Dr Crokes captain. Darragh and his classmates were delighted to meet their hero as the Kerry and Crokes star presented the winner with a signed Kerry jersey and as well as that, the school received a full O’Neill’s training kit. All local primary schools were invited to enter the contest at Daly’s SuperValu, which has held the contest for the past eight years. “The competition attracted a bumper entry as always, with schools entering from across the locality. As an extra bonus this year, the winning school received an

Education
Future Is Uncertain But There Are Elements You Can Control…
Like Where You Go To College STUDENTS interested in going forward to third-level education have already submitted their initial CAO application forms, but with the CAO Change of Mind deadline of Saturday, July 1, fast approaching, many will have a myriad of questions. Our friends at the Institute of Technology Tralee (IT Tralee) stress that your number-one priority right now is your exams, as it is not until after the Leaving Certificate has finished that your final decision has to be made. Do your research and don’t forget to check out what courses and amenities colleges have to offer. IT Tralee will open a state-of-the-art €16.5m sports academy in 2018. Accommodation is another factor – did
you know accommodation costs for IT Tralee are 25% cheaper than Limerick or Cork and 50% cheaper than Dublin? Speaking in relation to his experience of filling out a CAO Change of Mind form, First Year Health & Leisure student at IT Tralee, and the captain of the Kerry Minors, David Clifford, from Killarney, said: “I always had a huge interest in sport and fitness growing up, and knew I wanted it to play a big part in my future. The first thing that jumped to mind was PE Teaching, which was what I had initially put down on my CAO form. However, after some time, as I am sure is the same with many students, I began to doubt and question my decision. It is an important choice, which does affect your future and so I wanted to make
sure I was making the correct one. “My first port of call was to chat to friends and teammates about their college experience to date, and many were speaking very highly about IT Tralee. With the recommendations coming through I contacted the college to ask about their sports courses, and they could not have been nicer. They really guided me through the selection process, making it a really easy experience for me. I compared my current course in IT Tralee with a similar course being offered in CIT, but for me personally there were more pros for IT Tralee on my pro and con list. There was a PE Teaching module as part of the course, which still left this avenue open to me and they had just opened some amazing new-

facilities and had more improvement plans, which really impressed me.” For more information visit www.ittralee. ie or call the admissions office on 0667145638.

Killarney Flies The Flag High
ANYONE looking upwards on High Street this week will have noticed a brand-new banner erected across the thoroughfare. The banner is coloured purple and green and it is hoped will be the first of a series across all of the town’s streets. The pennant is the brainchild of Kate O’Leary of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, who said: “The colour purple on the banner is to rep-
resent the Chamber and the green is to signify Kerry County Council.” Former Killarney Chamber president Ms O’Leary spearheads street decoration projects as well as being closely involved in the Christmas in Killarney and July 4 festivals. “It will be like a continuous pennant in all the streets of the town and hopefully the banners will be up before the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle,” she said.

WHERE an accident occurs in your place of work, which may not be your fault and where you sustain an injury arising from same, you may be in a position to claim compensation for the injury or loss that you have sustained. Usually, there is a strict period of two years within which to bring your claim. However, you are also obliged, within a period of two months, to notify the person whom you are holding responsible that it is or it may be your intention to bring a claim for Personal Injuries. It is always wise to notify your employer immediately when such an incident occurs, so that this may be noted in the Accident Report Form/ Book. It is important thereafter for an employer to immediately notify their insurance company of such an incident. Where an injury has been sustained, you should seek medical attention without delay. It is always wise to set out in a written statement exactly what occurred and the details of any independent witnesses. Your
employer is obliged to provide a safe place and system of work. Where that is breached and where an incident occurs, you may be entitled to a claim for compensation. In the event that you choose to do so, you should immediately notify your solicitor without delay, so that appropriate preservation of the accident location can be notified and your claim, if you wish to proceed with it, can be notified to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board. It is important in the event that you wish to bring your claim that you would deal with this promptly, so as not to fall foul of the Statute of Limitations, or have your claim become statute barred. Inch Flies The Flag High For Kerry’s 14 Blue Flag Beaches
INCH BEACH provided the picture-perfect backdrop today as Kerry County Council raised one of the county’s 14 Blue Flags for the 2017 season. Kerry beaches have again maintained their excellent standard this year with the awarding of 14 Blue Flags for 2017 by An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland, as announced in recent weeks. Blue Flags are awarded to beaches and marinas which comply with a very specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education and beach management. Beaches must also comply with EU bathing water directives to secure the honour.
The following Kerry beaches retain their flags for 2017: Rossbeigh, Ballybunion North, Ballybunion South, Ballyheigue, Fenit, Maherbeg, Kells, Derrynane, White Strand, Ballinskelligs, Banna, Ventry and Inch. Fenit Marina also retains it Blue Flag this year. Green Coast awards have also been announced for Beal Bán, Castlegregory, Littor, Waterville and Ballinskelligs. Attending the raising of the new Blue Flag at Inch today were the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea; councillors from the South and West Kerry Municipal District; the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell; and Director of Services for Environment, John Breen.

Grenfell Tower Fire: Searches Continue THE number of people confirmed dead after the Grenfell Tower fire in west London has risen to 17. Many people from the 120 flats remain missing, with relatives and friends desperately appealing for information. “We do believe that that number will sadly increase,” Met Police Commander Stuart Cundy said. NHS England said 37 people were still being treated in hospital, 17 of them in a critical condition. Specially trained dogs are being sent in to look for victims.
Because of the size of the building, it is believed the operation could take weeks. A specialist fire investigation team has identified what is believed to have been the flat of origin. Witnesses of Wednesday’s disaster said some people jumped from their flats, while others saw babies and children being dropped into the arms of people below. London Fire Brigade said it had rescued 65 people and that fire-fighters managed to battle all the way to the top floor.

SINN FÉIN leader Gerry Adams left the Dáil chamber filled with laughter on Wednesday by sharing an anecdote about how he and new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar had shared a Pilates class. Referring to him as “a decent man”, Mr Adams added that he didn’t know him too well, apart from the fact they had “attended
the same Pilates class before”. He jokingly added, at the expense of the now former Taoiseach Enda Kenny: “We couldn’t get the current Taoiseach to stretch that far.” The newly nominated Taoiseach remarked that Deputy Adams was perhaps the better of the two due at Pilates to “his experience of being in a tight squeeze”.

Crime-Catcher Cam! Saturn Is Definitely Worth Observing
With house burglaries becoming ever more prevalent the need for Big Brother-style home security is becoming a real necessity, says electrical and automation engineer Kevin O’Connell SURVEILLANCE cameras are widely used in conjunction with many security systems. One such surveillance camera available is the Nest Outdoor Camera. This camera is specifically suited for external environments and provides 130-degree diagonal field of vision and up to 1080p video in daytime or night-time conditions. The camera uses a 1/3 inch, 3 megapixel sensor and has an 8x digital zoom allowing for close up surveillance. One neat feature of this camera is that it has an integrated speaker/ microphone allowing the homeowner to communicate with anyone in the proximity of the camera, this feature is sure to give any unsuspecting guests a kick on arrival! The camera requires a 230V AC power supply and communicates via a Wi-Fi connection, just to note a broadband Internet connection of min 2 Mbps
upload speed is recommended for smooth video streaming. The camera interfaces with the user via a dedicated Nest app, the nest app provides alerts upon intruder detection and allows the user to remotely monitor activity in real time via a smart phone, tablet or computer. The Nest camera can also be used to create still photos to view and share or the hours of captured video footage can be stitched together to form a mini time-lapse film. If the user wishes to share footage the camera can be used to deliver a public or passwordprotected live stream to share with friends and neighbours if so required. The Nest Outdoor Camera should be installed by a competent electrical person and retails from €200, excluding installation, in all good electrical retail shops.
Of all the sights visible in a telescope, there is none so breath-taking as the planet Saturn, says Trevor O’Donoghue
SIMPLY put, Saturn is magnificent. The planet is surrounded by a series of icy rings that circle the planet, making it look like a Lolo ball. Unfortunately a telescope is needed to see the rings. Even a small telescope of decent quality will do, and now is the perfect time to see the planet. As Earth and Saturn orbit the sun, the angle of Saturn’s rings relative to the Earth changes. Back in 2009 the rings were edge on and so we’re not visible. Since then, the angle has been changing and the view of the rings improving and today they are perfect for viewing. At the moment (mid-June) Saturn rises in the south east at around 10pm and is best placed for viewing at half one in the morning when it can be found
directly south, 15 degrees above the horizon. You will know you are on the right track if you look to the right of it, and see a distinctly red star. This star is called Antares and is in the constellation Scorpius. Saturn is definitely worth observing if you have a telescope, because your first view of the planet is a wow moment that will stay with you forever. Even without a telescope, it’s worthwhile tracking it down. With larger telescopes the inky blackness of the gaps between the rings is visible and adds to the spectacle. Everyone should see Saturn at least once through a telescope and with a number of free astronomy or planetarium apps available to track it down, it’s easier to do so than ever before.

gan g u D Jill A peel is the perfect way to kickstart your skincare regime, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio
Cosmeceutical Glycolic Peel GIVE your skin a boost and prepare it for any upcoming special events with a peel. The Sothys Glysalac Peel is a professional chemical peel using the two main ingredients, glycolic and saliclylic acid. Glycolic acid is a natural ingredient derived from sugar cane. Glycolic acid is an exfoliator which safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, revealing fresh, radiant skin. Glycolic acid can help improve skin discoloration and pigmentation such as sun spots or age spots. It can help break down congestion, cleans out blackheads and acne prone skin. Using a peel with salicylic acid not only exfoliates but it is anti-inflammatory. It contains the same inflammatory ingredients as aspirin. It will help prevent any further breakouts and maintains the skins pores. Salicylic acid reacts with the main protein in the skin called keratin and removes and dry patches. The treatment itself has a many steps and is 45 minutes long. In our studio we start all facials with a double cleanse and exfoliation. We use a steamer containing purified water to open the pores allowing the peel to penetrate as deep as possible. The chemical peel is left on for 5 to 15 minutes depending on your skin type. We gently remove any remaining blackheads. An oxygenating/hydrating mask is applied to the skin to bring back the pH of the skin and hydrate it. Of course we recommend using an SPF everyday on your skin and this is even more important after a peel.
VICHY’S Slow Âge fluid packs a powerful probiotic punch when it comes to protecting your skin. Proven to slow down the appearance of signs of ageing, Vichy’s Slow Âge is inspired by the “Slow Movement”, which promotes the value of doing things at the right pace, in order to do them well and to obtain the best results. This new anti-ageing ethos, spearheaded by Vichy, is made possible by an active formula of antioxidant Baïcalin, probiotic-derived Bifidus and Vichy Thermal Spa Water. The fluid leaves skin feeling comfortable and hydrated and offers an excellent base for makeup while guarding against environmental aggressors.
Acid reign
AS SKIN ages its production of hyaluronic acid decreases, leading to a loss of volume. Even at peak production, hyaluronic acid in the skin is depleted by up to 50% every 24 hours. This powerful natural humectant is responsible for maintaining moisture levels in skin and improving the appearance of firmness, plumpness and smoothness. Hyaluronic acid begins to decline in your 20s, resulting in minor shadows, fine lines and dullness; but by 50-plus the severity of the loss manifests in the deepening of wrinkles. Check out SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier which aims to firm, smooth and plump skin. Its makers promise it will help amplify skin’s own hyaluronic acid levels by 30% in just four weeks.

Netflix - House of Cards Season 5
Reviewed: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine POSSIBLY the feelgood hit of the summer, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is as unpredictable as it is heart-warming. Perceptive and engrossing, this outstanding debut by Gail Honeyman is anything but twee and will leave you wanting more. The title character is an unusual loner who struggles with appropriate social skills and has a tendency
to trot out exactly what she’s thinking – to the joy of the reader. Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend. One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself.
On The Box Tonight
After a year absence Frank Underwood finally returns to Netflix with House of Cards Season 5 promising to be the darkest yet. The new season picks up after Frank’s declaration of all-out war on terror group ICO just two weeks before the election. It seems that Frank slides lower and lower down the depravity scale each season, but by the fifth his tower-
ing lies and a few ghosts have finally begun to corner him. Kevin Spacey is, as ever, imperious as the silky, scheming Frank – though he once more has his equal in Robin Wright’s hewn-from-a-glacier First Lady Claire Underwood. The new season to be a confident return to the form which made season one and two such compelling viewing.

Educate Together Expresses Disappointment FOLLOWING the Two Mile National School announcement, Educate Together feels parents have been let down. Educate Together has expressed disappointment and concern at the announcement of the transfer of a Catholic school to Kerry ETB to re-open as a community national school. When the Government’s school reconfiguration plans were announced by Minister Bruton in January 2017, Educate Together raised concerns that they gave undue influence to the Catholic Church and left families who are campaigning for equality-based schools with no real voice in the process. Educate Together put these concerns to Department of Education officials directly at a meeting on April 5, 2017, published them online (www. educatetogether.net) and issued press statements outlining the case. Today’s announcement on the transfer of a Catholic school to Kerry ETB to re-open as a Community National School vindi-
cates Educate Together’s concerns. Following parental surveys in 2013, Killarney was one of 25 areas around Ireland where parents were promised an Educate Together national school by the Government under the “divestment” plan. Educate Together has been engaging with parents in the Killarney area for four years with a view to establishing an Educate Together school in the town. In 2017, interest levels among parents for an Educate Together school remain high. Educate Together has also actively engaged with the Department of Education to establish a school in Killarney, having proposed various viable school accommodation options for the Department to investigate. Indeed, when it became aware that the school in Two Mile was closing, Educate Together suggested the very school building, in October 2016 and again in March 2017. Instead, the Department is now sanctioning a Community National School. Educate Together expressed concerns
earlier this year that the Government’s reconfiguration plan lacked high standards of transparency and equality in that all stakeholders were not fairly represented or consulted in the process. These concerns have now been validated. Today that Department stated that a local meeting was held in March organised by the “Two Mile Community Group” and attended by over 70 members of the local community met and ‘independent vote’ was held to allow Two Mile/Cahooreigh NS to be made available as a Community National School. At no point were parents seeking an Educate Together school in the area consulted. At no point was Educate Together asked to express an interest in becoming patron of the school. At no point was Educate Together invited by the Department of Education to make a case for a prospective Educate Together patronage to the local community.
Educate Together - and others - expressed concerns that the reconfiguration plan gave the Catholic Church undue influence on education. This is because current patrons – mostly Catholic bishops had the final say in whether schools are transferred – and, crucially, to whom. Today we are seeing the transfer of a Catholic school to the Kerry ETB to re-open under the ETB’s patronage as a Community National School. This is despite parents clearly expressing a preference for and Educate Together school when objectively surveyed by the DES in 2012. Educate Together is now calling for a full reassessment of Richard Bruton’s “reconfiguration” process and that a new process be formulated that considers the wishes of families, rather than Church interests. Luke O’Shaughnessy, Communications Manager, Educate Together, Via email

Welcome For Opening Of New Community School CONGRATULATIONS to all those who played key roles in ensuring the continuation of Two Mile School. One of the advantages of the decision to place the reopened school under Education and Training Board auspices is that it offers an alternative provider
model for that small minority seeking an alternative form of patronage and one that is not incompatible with Catholic values. The opening of one of the first of a breed of new community national schools keeps Killarney at the forefront
of major national education changes and will add an element of parental choice to Killarney’s existing first class national schools. Alan Whelan, Beaufort

Home Renovation Make A Clean Sweep When It Comes To Home Improvement

committee will also be delighted with your efforts as the judges for the national Tidy Towns competition come a-calling this summer! What’s more, as you will see in these pages, the greater Killarney area offers unrivalled support in the form of busi-
nesses and experts in home improvement and DIY. The longer days will give most of us inspiration and scope to ensure our homes and businesses look their picture-perfect best and bear in mind that little foresight goes a long way. First of all, draw up a checklist of what you need. You may have to compile a shopping list while you’re at it. Once you have everything to hand, sort out that to-do list and don’t delay in tackling it head on. Create a realistic schedule, keeping in mind that a single Saturday won’t suffice, as you’ll need several days for more involved projects, such as shampooing carpets, clearing out wardrobes and blitzing that kitchen and living spaces. Decide first if you are going from indoors to outdoors, and have a scheme in mind for the starting and finishing point of both. Whether you are gardening or perfecting your indoor space, focus on one task at a time – and don’t forget to enlist the help of other family members. While wielding the drill can be satisfying in itself, there is also great pleasure in reviewing each finished task – and of course relaxing and enjoying the benefits of a comfortable property.

Colour Is Key When It Comes To Your Wellbeing NOW is a good time to rethink your property’s colour palette. It’s no secret that colour can either make or break a design, but fortunately, it is very easy to choose the perfect colour scheme for you. When the colour’s right, it can enhance feelings of health and wellbeing, modify perceived temperature (make your space feel warmer or cooler), transform perceived space (make your space feel larger, or more cozy and intimate), illuminate dark areas, create mystery and romance in dull areas, and energise static areas. Colour, and the psychology of colour, is a big design trend. But beware of generalisations — for instance, that green is relaxing, blue is soothing, red is energising — as these only apply when certain hues are used. A vibrant blue or a sharp, electric green definitely would not be relaxing; a deep blue-green might
feel cold instead of soothing. The wrong red used in an entire room might create the sensation of entrapment rather than energy. Before planning colour in your personal environment, make a mini-questionnaire and poll yourself and your family. Your answers are 50% of the project because your color choices depend on them for direction. Think about where the room is and how many windows it has. Also bear in mind what direction the windows are facing. Is there landscaping outside that will have an effect on the colours in the room? Who will use the room, and what will they do there? Is it private or community space? Will it be a sociable and active place, or a peaceful place? How do I want it to feel? Happy hunting when it comes to finding the perfect hues for your living space.

Rally Sardinia, Not A Happy Hunting Ground LAST weekend’s Rally Italia Sardinia was well represented by Irish rallying talents of Paul Nagle, co-driver to Kris Meeke, Waterford driver Craig Breen both competing in the WRC with Citroen WRT and local driver Rob Duggan competing in the JWRC. However this tough gravel event took its toll on crews and machinery. The early casualty was Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle making the headlines on day one with another retirement. Rolling their Citroen C3 WRC shortly after taking over the lead of the rally from Juho Hanninen. Unfortunately due to the damage to the car they were unable to restart the event. Fortunes weren’t much better for their Citroen teammate, Craig Breen who was also side-lined by a damaged gearbox on stage 3, however did manage to continue but finished well outside the points. If crashing out of another event wasn’t bad enough for Kris Meeke, he was later dropped by Citroen for the next round in Poland in favour of Andreas Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen was drafted in by Citroen for the Sardinian event, only to be the best placed Citroen finisher on the event on his first outing with the team. Meeke won in Mexico, but the rest of his sea-
son has been a disaster. Rolling out of the lead in Italy on Friday, retired at the previous round in Portugal after hitting a rock and destroyed his C3 after two big rolls in Argentina. There is no question about Meeke’s speed but consistency is something Citroen need to salvage their sea-

son and Mikkelsen offers just that. A good result for Mikkelsen in Poland surely will leave Meeke out in the cold. Kris Meeke’s WRC career hangs in the balance, again.
Saturday was cut short by a broken driveshaft forcing a retirement. Returning under rally 2 rules allowed Duggan to salvage four valuable championship points, the maximum possible after incurring the
restart time penalty. There are four rounds left, 42 point adrift in the JWRC championship and a maximum of 48 points on offer on the next round in Poland, the JWRC title race is far from decided.

Hammond Can’t Catch A Break RICHARD HAMMOND may be on the mend with his new “Swiss Army knee,” but the aftermath of his horrific crash on a hill climb event in Switzerland last weekend, the international governing body, the FIA that runs motorsport from F1 to WRC, has asked Swiss officials investigating the accident for their findings, with the ultimate goal of “initiating disciplinary proceedings.” Why is the FIA looking into Grand Tour exploits? I hear you ask. Responsible for governing F1 and WRC events, the FIA is also responsible for a host of smaller events including the hill climb where Hammond sent the €1 million Rimac Con-
cept One rolling down a hillside ending in a fiery ball. The alpine course played host to the Swiss Hillclimb Championship last weekend, and though The Grand Tour runs involving Clarkson in a Lamborghini Aventador S, May in a Honda NSX, and Hammond in the ill-fated Rimac weren’t part of the event, the fiery accident was tied enough to the event that the FIA believes it made the whole racing community look bad. The investigation will centre on why Hammond was traveling too fast to navigate the bend after crossing the finish line. Clarkson dismissed suggestions that Hammond hadn’t adequately practiced
with the car. According to Clarkson, the Grand Tour crew has been frantically re-writing and re-scheduling shoots to accommodate the fact that Hammond won’t be able to
drive for a few months. But he’ll be back in the office as early as next week, and Clarkson is busy drawing up a list of menial tasks he can accomplish on one leg. That will made an episode in itself.

THE sharp end of the F1 season have never been more interesting then this year. However McLaren’s Honda is stealing all the headlines of late, with the Honda engine again up to its usual tricks in last weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. Alonso looked set to deliver McLaren the first point of the 2017 season when his Honda engine gave up two laps from the chequered flag while running in 10th. It meant Alonso’s return to Formula One ended in the same fashion as his attempt to win the Indy 500 -- a Honda engine failure. This failure comes at a time when McLaren is seriously considering ending its €100 million partnership with Honda. Alonso’s race retirement comes
just days after he said McLaren needs to win by September to convince him to stay with the team in 2018. Though the Spaniard is widely regarded the most
complete driver in F1 today, a route back to a title-winning F1 car is hard to see with limited options for 2018 could see the Spaniard retire from F1.

Reborn TVR Teases New Sports Car FOR you die-hard car enthusiast, the demise of TVR, the last British sports car over a decade ago signalled the end of a great thumping hairy chested V8 making loads of noise. But TVR is back. TVR has released a single teasing image of its first allnew production car in more than a decade. The image, released this week doesn’t
give much away, however TVR announced its first car since the old Sagaris coupe went out of production back in 2006. Combined with a powerful 5.0-litre Cosworth-developed V8, TVR claims its first sports car under new ownership will have a power-toweight ratio of 400bhp per tonne. This means the all-new sports car will come equipped with at least 480bhp.
Valuable Tips For Your Upcoming 172 Car Purchase PURCHASING a car, whether it is your first-time or not, is always a new experience. Excitement never leaves while preparing and selecting, followed by delight and fulfilment when finally driving home that dream car of yours. But like any other major purchase, you need to do your homework. Learn as much as you can about cars — and the process that goes into buying it — to ensure that you’re getting the best deal possible. Before you get lost in your car reverie, here are some valuable tips to consider when purchasing your new ride. Prepare a shortlist of choices. When choosing the type of vehicle that’s right for you, your options are aplenty. Having a wish list—what you need and want out of a vehicle—and more importantly, a realistic budget, will help
you narrow down your choices. You can find almost all the information you need online (car model, specs, average price and even reviews) that will enable you to make a detailed comparison. Determine what features are really important—safety, fuel efficiency, etc., and those that you can do away with. Also consult your friends and family for their valuable “car wisdom” and ask them to help you out in your search. Once you have a shortlist, visit the car dealers and check out the vehicles up close and personal, or request a testdrive. When it comes to cost, always negotiate for the lowest price possible and ask for other inclusions; floor mats, boot liners and more! Look into financing options. Being able to haggle for a must-buy vehicle pack-
age cost is just half the battle. You will also need a good auto loan package to make the deal even sweeter. Instead of paying for the hefty purchase price outright, applying for a loan package is your best bet. Much like choosing the right car, you also need to research and familiarize yourself with the process of getting car finance. Assess the interest rate, loan terms and other fees offered. You may access a provider’s loan calculator online to determine the loan amount and terms that will best suit your budget. It will be extremely helpful if you can personally get in touch with a loan account officer to answer your queries and assist you with the loan application process. With all these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to an even more enjoyable and exciting car shopping experience.

Garden Magic Debby Looney
Summer Time & The Living Is Easy… SUMMER is most noticeable in the vegetable garden, where lettuce seems to grow as you look at it. Remember to keep those salad crops going with repeat sowing! Radishes and oriental leaves can also be sown every week or so. Blight is starting to become a problem, so it is advisable to start protecting your crop. If you are a first time grower of spuds, the symptoms of blight are brown patches on the leaves, with a yellowing spreading from them. The tubers themselves will have dark patches, and the inside will be brown. They will also stink awfully. Spray the crop with a blight control product, such as Bayer Garden Potato Blight Control, or, as prevention, with copper spray such as Bordeaux mixture, which works by leaving a film on the leaves, preventing the spores from taking hold. There is controversy over using copper mixture, as copper will build up in the soil and harm earthworms…If you are worried about the use of chemicals then the best way to avoid the problem of blight is by planting early varieties, as these are almost ready to be harvested, and so avoid the blight season, or by planting resistant varieties. If you see one or two plants showing signs of the disease dig them out and destroy them. If you notice symptoms on a number of plants, cut the foliage, and earth the rest of the plant up well. This prevents the disease from spreading down through the plant. Wait twothree weeks before lifting the tubers, giving them time to get a thicker skin, and minimising the chance of infection from the soil. Tomatoes are another crop which can grow at enormous rates in a short space of time. Take care to pinch out the side shoots which appear from the ‘elbows’. This encourages fruit rather than masses of greenery and flowers to develop. You can also pinch out the main stem if the plant is growing too tall. Strawberries are also running away with themselves… and those ‘runners’ should be cut off if you have enough plants. If you do need more plants, just pin down the runner and it will set roots, however, if you don’t need them, and they are left grow, your crop will be much smaller. Pots and baskets are really beginning to show colour, and you can start feeding them with liquid fertilizer. Tomato food is often recommended, as it is high in potassium, which drives flower production. Personally I prefer an all-round fertilizer such as Phostrogen or Miracle Gro. My reasoning is simple: it is important that the entire plant is healthy, roots, leaves and flowers, to remain disease resistant and strong. I think all plants, even bedding and summer patio plants, look better when they have good strong foliage with large, bold blooms, rather than limp, mouldy foliage with masses of undersized and pale flowers! • Got a gardening question? In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
JOHN 6:51-58: Jesus tells us that to have life we need more than physical nourishment. How have you been aware of deeper hungers? What has met that deeper longing in you? Jesus tells us that it is not just something he gives us which will give us life, but himself in his life, death and resurrection. How has your faith in the person of Jesus fed you? Jesus speaks about ‘drawing life’ from him. In day-to-day living what are the practices which support your faith and help you to draw life from Jesus? The Eucharist is one of the ways in which we draw life from Jesus. Recall with gratitude how the Eucharist has been a source of nourishment and life for you. Perhaps you can also think of human examples of people drawing life from one another. From whom have you drawn life? Who has been able to draw life from you? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on the soundtrack that convinced her to become a performer
So What Inspired You To Become An Artist? I’VE often written about inspiration and how important it is in the arts world. The other day I was travelling to Cork by car with my fiancé John. As much as he loves listening to the radio I convinced him to let me put on an album and I chose one that I actually hadn’t listened to in years. As I sang along, almost word perfect, to each track, I was brought back to a time when I initially fell in love with music. The album we were listening to was the Grease soundtrack. I can’t tell you the exact date when I first saw that movie, but I can remember how I felt. I felt uplifted and excited by all the singing and dancing and I vowed that when I grew up I would be “an actor, singer and dancer”. I rented that movie for months on end then on the morning of my fifth birthday my parents surprised me by presenting me with my very own copy. I
couldn’t believe I now owned this piece of magic that I had completely fallen in love with. I continued to watch this movie along with Grease 2, Staying Alive and Dance Academy on loop for many years. My childhood friends and cousins can attest to the fact that I was obsessed with these movies as I would regularly subject them to “show rehearsals” using these movies as our soundtrack. I hadn’t thought about my very first musical inspiration until this weekend. Can you remember what initially caused you to fall in love with music or art or dance? Did one line in a poem or song inspire you to one day grow up to be an artist? Are you now the person you wanted to be when you grew up? • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Cod In Salt Crust Killarney Park Hotel head chef Heiko Riebandt shares his recipe for a delectable fish dish
INGREDIENTS
2kg cod 1 piece lemon 2 branches thyme 2 branches flat parsley 1 crushed clove garlic Salt crust: 3kg sea salt, fine 2kg sea salt, coarse 50g flour 5 piece egg white
METHOD
ASK your fish supplier to gut and cut away the fins but leave the head on. Open the fish and place the herbs inside and season with black pepper. For the salt crust, mix all ingredients in a big bowl. Add flour if it is too liquidy and if it is too brittle add some water and let it rest for 7-10 minutes. Take a small piece of the crust and flatten it. Put it into the preheated oven. If it is too brittle add more egg white. Heat the oven to 180C. Make a finger-thick layer of the salt crust on the bottom of baking tray and place the fish on it. Cover with the rest of the crust. Place the fish in the middle of the oven for 25 minutes, or if it is bigger add one minutes per 100g, opposite if it is smaller. To serve, break the crust with a knife at the edges and take the whole top part off. Serve with potatoes and salad dressing.

The board members took the opportunity to meet with local tourism operators prior to the meeting, to discuss the tourism season and the extensive promotional programme which Tourism Ireland is undertaking to highlight Kerry, the Wild Atlantic Way and the island of Ireland around the world this year. Speaking after the board meeting, Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “We were delighted to be in Killarney for this month’s board meeting and to have the chance to meet with representatives of the local tourism industry and to hear directly how their business is doing. TAKING centre stage at the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District was a proposal to attract professional actors to perform in the town. Kerry County Council was urged into enter into discussions with theatre groups such as The Abbey Players and Druid Performing Arts Company with a view to securing them for periods of summer season residency for Áras Phádraig. “During the 1960s The Abbey Players performed a variety of plays in Killarney for some weeks of the summer,” said Councillor Michael Gleeson, who proposed the motion. “I also recall Mícheál MacLiammmóir performing one of his one-man shows in the town hall ballroom.” As Kerry County Council progresses the re-development of Áras Phádraig it is important that it would showcase not just local artists and groups but that the very best of national talent would also grace its stage, noted Cllr Gleeson. The area manager agreed that the motion was timely and appropriate and that such eminent performers would further enhance Killarney for locals and for its thousands of visitors. The motion was unanimously agreed and Cllr Gleeson promised to keep the matter on the agenda of future meetings. “It would be wonderful to have professional theatre for four or five weeks during the summer,” he told Killarney Advertiser.

See Our Columnists’ Coverage Of The Week In Sport And Catch Up On Killarney Notes And On The Ball
All To Play For As Athletic & Celtic Aim For Final Spots The Kerry Premier Division comes to a dramatic conclusion this week and anything could happen, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan WITH just one game to go in what has been a highly entertaining title race, five teams are still in with a shot of advancing to the 2016/17 Premier A Final (at time of going to print). Fierce rivals Athletic and Celtic have a great chance of finishing in the top two but with quality sides like Fenit, Dingle and Listowel still in contention, both Killarney clubs know that any slip-up at this stage could prove fatal. We drew level with Celtic at the summit thanks to a hard-fought and, at times, nervy 2-0 win over Listowel in Ferndale last weekend. Ourselves and Listowel were tied for third going into the game with both Fenit and Celtic ahead of us, so we knew that, realistically, only a win would do.
An all-Killarney final would be great for the town but, with things so tight at the top, we certainly won’t be taking anything for granted
The Killarney Athletic team who defeated Listowel last weekend. Back: Daithí Casey, Eanna Kavanagh, Brian O’Reilly, Brian O’Connor, Shane Doolan and Paudie O’Connor. Front: Seán Cournane, Jamie Doolan, Shane Lynch, Adam Moynihan and Michael O’Donoghue.
The Killarney Celtic team who defeated Janesboro in the FAI Junior Cup in March. Back: Podge O’Connor, Chris O’Leary, Roy Kelliher, John McDonagh, Pa McGrath and Jamie Spillane. Front: Matt Keane, Wayne Sparling, Peter McCarthy, Brendan Falvey and Cathal O’Shea. Pics: Konrad Paprocki
The first half was understandably cagey and neither side created a whole pile, although Seán Cournane and Daithí Casey both missed decent opportunities to break the deadlock. With the rain pouring down and the wind picking up as the second half wore on, it was beginning to feel like one of those days but we were handed a lifeline when Michael O’Donoghue was tripped inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Daithí Casey accepted the responsibility but the Listowel keeper guessed the right way and kept his low effort out. Luckily for us the ball rebounded straight back to Daithí and he kept his cool to convert at the second attempt. Listowel responded well and would have equalised were it not for an incredible save by Brian O’Connor, the Valentia man springing high to his right to tip a curling effort around the post. They really threw everything at us in the closing stages and with everyone committed forward, we managed to catch them on the break to score our
second and seal the victory. Listowel had just one defender back when Daithí Casey broke free down the right with both Shane Doolan and Mike Milner up in support. Daithí squared for Doolan who composed himself before slotting past the keeper and we managed to hold on for a priceless three points. Meanwhile, back in west Kerry, Celtic fell to a disappointing 5-2 defeat to reigning champions Dingle. A win would have guaranteed a top two finish but now Celtic need to beat Fenit at home on Thursday to secure a final berth. (This game will have been played by the time this issue is released.) We host Rattoo on Sunday at 2pm and, regardless of what happens in the other games, we know that three points will send us to the final. Rattoo haven’t had the best of years but they’re a physical team who are capable of turning us over if we aren’t at our best. An all-Killarney final would be great for the town but, with things so tight at the top, we certainly won’t be taking anything for granted.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE LIONS have gotten to a bit of a mixed start in the Tour of New Zealand so far. A win in the opening match against the New Zealand Barbarians was followed up by a loss to Super 15 side the Blues. The Blues fielded six All Blacks with returning All Black Sonny Bill Williams providing the magic to sink the tourists. However, last Saturday the British and Irish Lions faced an
even bigger challenge in Auckland when they took on the mighty Crusaders, which boasted nine All Blacks in the ranks. The Crusaders were always going to offer a real challenge as they have won 14 matches straight in the Super 14 this season so far. Warren Gatland was well aware of the challenge and made plenty of changes to field a serious outfit on the day. Without a doubt, the real standout players were Conor Murray and Owen Farrell who bossed the Lions from the off. In the end the tourists won. However this week alone, they face the Highlanders and the Maori All Blacks in two more tough fixtures, all moving
towards the first test proper in two weeks’ time. Our national squad took on the USA Eagles last Saturday at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. Munster man Keith Earls was the standout player in the 55-19 win. Joe Schmidt fielded a mix of experience and youth as another Munster man Rory Scannell won his first cap, the first of many one would hope. Next up it’s a trip to Japan for the men in green as they take on the home side twice over the next two weeks. Let’s hope that Joe Schmidt sticks with giving youth the chance to make a mark and gain valuable international experience.

Kerry Survive The Siege Of Ennis
Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald
SEVEN minutes in to the second half of the Clare v Kerry Munster SFC semi-final Ennis on Sunday last the Siege of Ennis was in full fling. Bring on the Tulla and the Kilfenora céilí bands. Time to celebrate for the Clare men. Remember 1992 when Clare shocked Kerry to win the Munster football final? That was all of 25 years ago. The curse of Biddy Early was banished. Kerry were down to 14 men after Donnchadh Walsh was sent off before half-time with two yellow cards. The home side had the aid of a strong downfield wind and they had taken the initiative after half-time. It was 1-5 for Clare at the interval to Kerry’s 0-8 but Clare were now two points ahead five minutes in to the second half 1-7 to 0-8. But Kerry refused to bend the knee and fought back tenaciously to win in a canter 1-18 to 1-12. They will meet Cork in Killarney on July 2 in the Munster final, the day after the Ring of Kerry cycle. The game has been switched to Killarney because the re development of Páirc Uí Chaíomh stadium will not be ready.
Jameso On Fire
Kerry won because James O’Donoghue was on fire from frees (5) and in general play. This was particularly true in the first half where his accuracy kept them in touch. Over the course of the game he shot nine points. He was the star in attack and Peter Crowley was magnificent in defence. For the most part Kerry lost midfield. David Moran did not play due to a leg injury. Jack Barry tried manfully but it was catch up for himself and Anthony Maher where Garry Brennan and Cathal O’Connor held sway. The Kerry defence suffered behind a losing midfield. Crowley was best of all under the pressure, but Shane Enright, Fionn Fitzgerald and Tadhg Morley did well. Bringing on Stephen O’Brien for the out of touch Barry John Keane was a masterstroke by the selectors. Not alone did he score the vital goal that put this game to bed and two valuable points but his darting runs through the Clare defence brought Kerry right back in contention when the outcome was still unsure. The second half introduction of Bryan Sheehan for James Barry and Kieran Donaghy for Anthony Maher did enough to see that possession in the midfield area fell Kerry’s way in the last 10 minutes.
Luck
You need luck as well as class and Kerry had that stroke of luck in the 44th minute when Jamie Maher’s shot for goal was diverted by the crossbar. At that time Clare were leading by a point 1-8 to 0-10 and a four-point deficit at that stage would surely have meant a bridge too far for Kerry, especially playing with 14 men. Great to see Maurice Fitzgerald and Mikey Sheehy taking their places in the stand which provides a much better vantage point for selectors than the traditional side-line view. On the previous day Cork just edged out Tipperary to make it the traditional Munster final and a full house in the Stadium in two weeks’ time; all the accommodation in town will be booked out thanks to the cyclists and the footballers. More about this great win over Clare in the countdown to July 2. . Scorers for Kerry: J O’Donoghue (0-9, 0-5 frees); S O’Brien (1-1); P Geaney (0-4, 0-2 frees); B Sheehan (0-1 free), S Enright, A Maher, M Geaney (0-1 each). Scorers for Clare: D Tubridy (1-3, 1-0 pen); E Cleary

Subs: S O’Brien for Keane (HT); J Savage for McCarthy (46): J Lyne for M Geaney (58); K Donaghy for A Maher (62); B Sheehan for Barry (64); J Buckley for P Geaney (69). Clare: Joe Hayes; D Ryan, K Hartnett, G Kelly; C Russell, M McMahon, P Lillis; C O’Connor, G Brennan; S Brennan, J Malone, S Collins; E Cleary, D Tubridy, K Sexton. Subs: C O’Dea for S Brennan (50 mins); John Hayes for Lillis (56); E Collins for K Hartnett (66); G O’Brien for O’Connor (70) Referee: P Hughes (Armagh).
The Juniors
In the curtain-raiser the Kerry juniors had a runaway win over Limerick shooting a massive 26 points to a mere 6 for hapless Limerick. It was wonderful to see Brendan O’Sullivan doing so well at midfield putting aside the stressful time he has had for the past year Philip O’Connor, Jeff O’Donoghue, Pa Kilkenny, Daniel O’Brien, Killian Spillane and Conor Cox caught the eye. Kerry have a great record in this junior competition and manager Jimmy Keane can be very proud of this display.
Minor Draw
The draw for the Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin Minor Football Championship was made live on Radio Kerry recently by Peter Keane of Keanes Supervalu Killorglin (Sponsors) and Peter Twiss, chairman of the County CCC. The draw resulted in the following pairings with first named having home venue: First-round games will be played on July 4 or July 5. Preliminary Round (June 29): (A) Shannon Rangers V Kerins O’Rahillys, Round 1, South Kerry V Firies, Kenmare Dist V
Austin Stacks, East Kerry V St Kierans, Mid Kerry V Dingle, Prelim Rd (A) V Laune Rangers, Dr Crokes V Feale Rangers, West Kerry V St Brendans. DUAGH 0-11, FIRIES 3-14 In this division 4 match Firies played with a very strong wind and quickly went into a four-point lead all from play before Duagh responded with two points from play. RATHMORE 4-17 V KNOCKNAGOSHEL 0-04 Rathmore “B” cruised to a facile victory with a goal blitz from the home side. Tadhg Mahony in the second minute, Denis McCarthy after five, Tadhg Mahony again one minute later and Mark T Reen after seven minutes killed off the contest. FOSSA 1-11 BALLYDONOGHUE 1-12 Both sides were in dire need of points here to help pull themselves clear of the very congested bottom of the league table. Both teams had a player apiece involved with Kerry panels. But Ballydonoghue were boosted by the availability of Jason Foley for the game and he certainly had a major influence in their success, by the narrowest of margins. Fossa: Colin Myers, Kevin McCarthy, Paddy Sheehan, Daniel O’Keeffe, Darragh Rice, Shane Malone, Mark Dennehy, Fintan Coffey, Colin Davidson, Mikey O’Shea, Lorcan Daly, Damien Dennehy, Tadhg O’Shea, Kenneth Clifford, Domnhaill O’Sullivan; manager: John Evans; selectors: Willie Buckley, James Cahillane. GNEEVEGUILLA 3-17 ST MICHAELS FOILMORE 2-05 Gneeveguilla defeated St Michaels Foilmore 3-17, to 2-05
In Brief
There’s plenty of action in sport on the global stage with the Lions tour and the US Open in golf. John Egan memorial: There will be an unveiling of the John Egan memorial statue in his native Sneem tomorrow, attended by Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Mick O’Dwyer, Niall Cahillane and Jimmy Deenihan.

Sport Denise Lyne
Legion ladies captain Denise Lyne talks to Adam Moynihan about her teammates, the season so far and rapping like Kendrick Lamar
Hi Denise. Thanks for talking to us. No worries. How’s 2017 going so far for the Legion ladies? Ah not too bad. Slow start but we’re picking up now. How are you playing yourself? I’m playing okay. Better than last year but still room to improve. Who’s better between you and your brother Jonathan? Oh definitely me. I taught him everything he knows! No, Jonathan hands down. I don’t know about that! Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Definitely Abby O’Donoghue but I always get stuck with her anyway because I have to drop her everywhere. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? Maeve Crowley. A dark horse. Who’s the biggest moaner? Isabelle but it comes from a good place. Who’s the worst-dressed? Definitely me but Liz Mohan is a close second I think. What type of stuff do you wear? I’d wear trackies. All Adidas and O’Neill’s if I can get away with it. Who spends the most time in the gym? Julie Kelly but that’s because she works in a leisure centre. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Legion this year, who would it be? Katie Walsh.
Kendrick Lamar.
Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? I think the best all-round player I’ve ever played with is Rebecca Murphy. Just a very natural footballer. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Sarah Leahy. She’s a great sprinter, a great runner. Very fit. If you had to transfer to another Killarney club, who would it be? I wouldn’t. I’d change sports before I’d change clubs. I suppose you couldn’t have a Lyne playing for the Crokes... Oh God. I’d be disowned! What’s your proudest sporting moment? Probably winning Division 4 last year. It was our first year back as seniors so it was great to come out on top. And the most embarrassing? My first goal for Killarney Celtic was an own goal. But I got two other goals in that game so I made up for it! If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? I’ve been told I’m like a boxer or a wrestler so maybe Katie Taylor. What are your five favourite sports in order? I’d say football, soccer, squash, surfing and badminton. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I think I’d be good at tennis. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? When the Rule 42 change happened and they played rugby in Croke Park. I think that was great. Other than that, maybe when Suzanne Smith won the All-Ireland badminton final. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Reddit. What’s your most-used emoji?
What’s the best show on TV? It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Big Danny DeVito fan? Yeah. It’s a classic.
Russell Brand
What’s your favourite song at the moment? I don’t really have one to be honest but I like London Grammar’s new album. What would you sing at karaoke? King Kunta by Kendrick Lamar. Good choice. Do you fancy yourself as a rapper? Yeah I have the dance moves and all for it. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? It would have to be either Jonathan Lyne or Shaman Falvey Enfield. I don’t know who that is… He’s an up-and-coming actor. Watch this space. What would you have for your last meal? A fillet steak, cooked rare, with sweet potato fries and garlic butter. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Probably Russell Brand. The resemblance is uncanny. Can you tell me a joke? What’s the difference between a train and a teacher? I don’t know. A train goes “choo choo” and a teacher says “spit the gum out”. Good one! Thanks Denise. No bother.

Killarney Camogie Club
The club ran a very successful open day in Barraduff on Sunday 12th June. This was made possible with the assistance of the board of the Barraduff Community Pitch. A huge thank you goes out to the board. The open day was very successful with over 20 girls attending from the area. The girls ranged in ages from 5-14 years of age. The day consisted in an introduction to basic Camogie skills such as correct grip to how to swing the hurl properly. There was also an obstacle course which incorporated more advanced skills. All girls appeared to enjoy the games we had at the end of the event. Hopefully we will see some of these girls at training in Killarney in the near future. Thank you to all their parents for bringing them along. A big thank you to Ceara Moore for organising the event also. Training will switch to Legion Gaa pitch as of Monday. Thank you to the Club for hosting us again this Summer.

This is an 8-week fun and friendly introduction to soccer under fully qualified and garda vetted supervision. RESULTS: Kerry District League: Dingle Bay Rovers 5 Killarney Celtic 2. We suffered just our third defeat in 17 league games against Dingle on Friday night, leaving us with everything to play for in our last game against Fenit Samphires. Matt Moynihan and Cathal O’Shea were on target for us but it wasn’t enough against a very sharp Dingle outfit - there is a reason why they are reigning champions. As things stand now, ourselves and Athletic are joint table-toppers, with Dingle and Fenit just a single point behind. Things are about to get very interesting - hopefully the great support we have enjoyed all year will get behind us again for the last push! Killarney Celtic B 3 Skeliga 0. Unfortunately, Skeliga were unable to field a team and conceded a walkover.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, Men’s Club
The Club team in the Pierce Purcell Shield West Munster Area final went to Kanturk last week, to take on the very fancied team from Newcastle-West. The team, under the Management of Chris Collins, James Collins and Donal “Gap” O’Sullivan were very well prepared for what was expected to be a very tough and close match. The contest was beginning to go our way from the turn onwards, then lightning struck, in our favour on 2 occasions within about 10 minutes of each other, firstly Eddie and Donie Macsweeney were 2 down after 13 holes when Eddie had a hole in one to win the 14th. Then Barry Duggan holed a chip to win the 13th to go 4 up, they closed out their match on the 14th green. We were always in charge in matches 2 & 4 and won both comfortably. Full match results were, Match 1 Donie & Eddie Macsweeney 1 up playing 18 when called in, Match 2 Andrew Garnett & Donogh O’Mahony won 3/2. Match 3 Dermot Roche & Barry Duggan won 5/4, Match 4 Joe McCarthy & Stephen Broderick won 3/2, Match 5 John O’Mahony & Brian Holden were called in from the 16th hole. This was a fantastic achievement, and we can now look forward to the Munster semi-final which will be played on Killeen in July when we will be up against Shannon Golf Club, with Thurles Golf Club and Mahon Golf Club in the other semi-final. The competition on Sunday the 11th of June was the John J Galvin & Sons Ltd. Sponsored singles stroke competition played on Mahony’s Point, the playing conditions were very blustery which made scoring on some holes very tricky indeed. The competition was won by the in-form Andrew Garnett who shot an excellent score of 69 off of 15 handicap, and in 2nd place with an equally excellent score of 69 off of 12 handicap was Don O’Sullivan, beaten on the back 9 holes, in 3rd place was Donnogh Moynihan with a 70 off of 11 handicap. Next weekend will see the staging of the Junior and the Intermediate Scratch Cups on Killeen on Saturday, and the competition on Sunday is our exchange day at Tralee Golf Club, which is being kindly sponsored by Cross Refrigeration.

Fossa started well in the second half with two points from Fintan Coffey, however Ballydonoghue kept the scoreboard ticking over also with points of their own. In spite of the best efforts of Dara Rice and with further scores from Damien Dennehy, Colin Davidson, Lorcan Daly and Tadgh O’Shea, Fossa just could not get their noses in front and Ballydonoghue held on to win on a score of 1-12 to 1-11. Kerry senior ladies star Aislinn Desmond has been named on the Lidl NFL Division Team of the League for 2017. Aislinn’s selection followed a series of fine performances from the Rathmore club girl in this year’s league campaign for the Kingdom. Although Kerry failed to reach the knock out stages, Desmond was generally given the task of marking their opponent’s marquee forward - and generally came out on top in the exchanges. An All Star in 2015. Desmond is currently out of action with a hamstring injury and she will be sorely missed from the Kerry line up when the Kingdom girls take on Cork in a must win Munster Championship tussle in Fitzgerald Stadium

Kilcummin Gaa
CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE RD 5: Listowel Emmetts 1-11 Kilcummin 0-14. A first half that saw us apparently total at sea and trailing by five points at the break was followed by a half of total commitment, sharpness and ability to create scoring opportunities. Indeed, with a bit more luck and clinical finishing we could have come away with two points instead of one in the end credit is due to every player and substitute who turned this performance around, no doubt aided by some inspirational words at half time from team management. Our next game is against Beaufort on Saturday at 7.30 pm in Kilcummin. CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to Kevin McCarthy on making his championship debut with the Kerry Seniors in Ennis on Sunday last.
