NEWS ‘Don’t Let Annette’s Death Be In Vain’ Editor's View

19.05.17

Words: Eve Kelliher

THE family of Killarney cyclist Annette Mannix, who was tragically killed in an accident on the Killarney bypass last week, has issued a plea to make the notorious black spot safer. Annette, from St Brendan’s Place, Killarney, died after her bicycle was in a collision with a tractor pulling agricultural equipment on the bypass road shortly after 7pm last Wednesday. Just days after her sister was laid to rest, Suzanne Dennehy told Killarney Advertiser: “We don’t want Annette’s death to have been in vain. This is too important an issue to let it go.” Annette’s family, with the support of the community and local businesses, organised petition calling for action to be taken at the accident black spot and it

was signed by mourners at the removal service in O’Shea’s Funeral Home on Saturday. The 48-year-old had joined Killarney Cycling Club just a few weeks ago and had been planning to do the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in aid of Down Syndrome Kerry. “Annette just had her mind made up to do the Ring of Kerry and had bought a new bike. She was really happy, she was delighted with herself,” Suzanne said. “She was very determined to do the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, which she had planned to complete with our sister Christine.” The popular Killarney lady had worked as an office manager in businesses in the locality and was a carer for her mother, Mary.

Need For Safety Measures At Junction THE death of Annette Mannix cast a shadow over the town and at the Requiem Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday, celebrant Fr Jim Lenihan called for road designers and planners to be aware of the need for cycle paths. Fr Lenihan said he is himself is a cyclist and is very much aware of the urgent need for better safety measures for cyclists, particularly at this junction.

The bypass junction has been the scene of numerous accidents – several fatal – over the years. The Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, and Cllr Donal Grady raised the issue at this month’s council meeting on Monday. “This junction is absolutely lethal,” Cllr Cronin told Killarney Advertiser. “It is vey very frustrating. We just want the powers-that-be and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to listen to us.”

THE tragic death of Annette Mannix in an accident on the Killarney bypass road last week has prompted an outpouring of grief and renewed calls for change at the route. Annette’s heartbroken family have shown generosity of spirit as just days after their loss they began a petition for safety improvements to the area. Killarney Advertiser has campaigned for change at the junction on the thoroughfare. Our three-part series in January and February prompted a huge response from angry and upset road users who simply cannot understand why nothing is done to rectify what is regarded as the most dangerous junction in Ireland. This is an accident black spot, and has been the subject of numerous urgent discussions by local politicians and Kerry County Council alike, in their quest for solutions to the crux from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, formerly the National Roads Authority. And while local officials have constantly raised the issue in recent years, it would seem it is only Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that has the power to green-light remedial action. In the words of the chairman of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin, “This is a lethally dangerous junction, which has caused a huge number of traffic accidents and fatalities over the years. But Transport Infrastructure Ireland has ignored all our pleas to take steps to alleviate the situation.” Councillor Donal Grady, in his days working with the Killarney Fire Service, said he had witnessed at first-hand the tragic results of numerous accidents at the black spot. “It must be the most dangerous junction in Ireland,” he said.

Tragic Loss Of Annette Sparks Call For Change

Left, Killarney Advertiser has run a series of articles campaigning for change at the bypass, and above, an aerial photo of the Killarney Bypass road, courtesy of Eamonn Keogh.

ONE person was killed and 22 were injured when a car struck pedestrians in New York’s Times Square on Thursday at about noon, according to the Fire Department. A Police Department spokesman said the driver of the car had been taken into custody. A maroon Honda Accord sat tilted on a bollard in Times Square, its right wheels off the ground on the northwest corner of 45th Street and Broadway.

NEWS Killarney National dedicated

to Finbarr Slattery DURING and after his term as the highly regarded secretary at Killarney racecourse, Finbarr Slattery had always maintained that the staging of a Killarney National would be a very significant event and a big attraction at his local track. His dream came true when the inaugural event was staged a few short years ago and on last Monday night, just two months after his passing, the feature 2017 €40,000 Killarney National was held in his honour. In a poignant gesture by the Killarney Race Company, under the chairmanship of Gerard Coughlan, the white flag was raised at 7.40pm for the Finbarr Slattery Memorial Killarney National Steeplechase, making it an emotional experience for those that knew and admired the former Race Company secretary from Countess Road, Killarney. “It was always Finbarr’s wish to have a Killarney National and we are delighted to be in a position to remember him with a race dedicated to his memory,” said Mr Coughlan. “A real gentleman and an incredibly intelligent man, Finbarr packed so much into his busy life but he always had a very special place in his heart for Killarney Races,” he added. Members of the Slattery family were there

to witness the occasion and, fittingly, it was a class horse that won the race when the JP McManus-owned Auvergnat, piloted by Mark Walsh, romped to victory ahead of Kansas City Chief and Georges Conn. The late Finbarr was secretary of Killarney Race Company from 1977 to 1991 and it was under his watch that Lester Piggott and Princess Haya of Jordan raced in Killarney. Finbarr was always a good friend to everyone at Killarney Advertiser and the team fondly remembers his informative take on the racing world – as well as local and world events in general – and how he would always drop in to the office with an invitation and passes to join the fun trackside come racing season. Another poignant event at the racecourse on Monday evening was the dedication of the first race to the late Killarney mum-oftwo Sheila MacGillicuddy-Kelliher – popularly known as Sheila Mac – who passed away in January 2016. KERRY football legend and Dancing with the Stars winner Aidan O’Mahony cut the ribbon at the Irish Wheelchair Association’s new centre in The Reeks, Killarney, on Friday. The IWA Community Centre provides a range of essential services and supports to people with disabilities living in Killarney and the surrounding areas. “The opening event brought together

local people, businesses and community organisations as well as members, friends and supporters of IWA to celebrate the official opening of the new community centre,” said Anita Matthews of the association. Local service coordinator Terry O’Brien was among those welcoming the opening, which was followed by the IWA’s annual general meeting and

conference in the INEC Killarney on Saturday. Volunteers with the association were honoured on Saturday evening at a gala dinner. The theme for the national conference was “Breaking Boundaries”. Dr Eddie Murphy, consultant clinical psychologist, author and advocate, acted as MC for the event and facilitated an engaging panel discussion.

Local politicians have highlighted this issue for many years and works are to be carried out in September of this year. Deputy Danny Healy-Rae and Councillor Maura Healy-Rae stated: “This is welcome news for people using the crossing daily.” Of the uneven surface at the level crossing, Councillor Michael Gleeson said: “The situation was and indeed still is a hazard for drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists as the sudden vibrations caused could easily lead to loss of control of the vehicle or bicycle. It is most fortuitous that no serious accident has occurred.” He added: “I wish to acknowledge the many public representatives who spoke on the matter and Kerry County Council for actively pursuing a satisfactory resolution.” Councillor Niall Kelleher said: This will be welcome news to the many road users who use this road both locals and visitors alike. He added: “Further details on these works will be provided in the near future.”

A MAN has been sentenced in connection with a spate of burglaries in Kerry in December 2012, Killarney Gardaí have confirmed. A male found at Mallow with €10,000 of cash and jewellery which has been taken in burglaries in this county has been sentenced following extensive investigations by Killarney Gardaí. In the court report by Liam Heylin in Thursday’s Irish Examiner, it is reported that Gardaí chased a Dublin man down the platform of Mallow railway station and caught him with over €10,000 in stolen cash and thousands of euro worth of jewellery stuffed into his socks and pockets. Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard on Wednesday that 13 burglaries had taken place at houses throughout Co Kerry. Gardaí were investigating these burglaries and became aware of the presence of the accused in the Mallow area and notified local gardaí. When searched he was found to have a large quantity of jewellery, €10,340 in cash, and £1,579 in sterling.

The conference also included an address from Paul McNeive, a chartered surveyor and managing director of Hamilton Osborne King when the firm was sold to Savills for €50m. “Paul started his career as a trainee in the basement of the firm and not even the loss of his legs in a fire prevented him from rising to the top position to lead 250 staff,” said Ms Matthews.

Michael Noonan To Step Down As Finance Minister MICHAEL NOONAN is set to step down from the role of Finance Minister. He says he does not wish to be considered for Cabinet by the candidate who succeeds Enda Kenny as Taoiseach. “Following the Taoiseach’s announcement yesterday, I want to state that I do not wish to be considered for Cabinet by his successor, whoever that may be,” he said on Thursday. “I have been honoured to serve as Minister for Finance since March 2011 and have introduced six annual budgets and one supplementary budget. “I believe now is a good time for a new Finance Minister to take up office. Ireland is the fastest-growing economy in Europe, the budget is almost balanced and we are on the cusp of full employment. “I will continue to carry out my duties as Minister for Finance until a successor is appointed.”

Minister Opens New Stable Block In Killarney A NEW, state-of-the-art stable yard, part of a major development costing close on €500,000, was officially unveiled at Killarney Racecourse on Sunday by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed. The 54-unit American barn style facility brings the total number of stables at the track to 145 and, the minister noted, the quality of the development will play a major part in attracting more top trainers and horses to the scenic course. “Killarney is the most beautiful racecourse in the entire country. There is no place quite like it and now it is one of the most modern in terms of facilities,” Minister Creed said on the opening day of the three-day May meeting. He said the equine industry was a global force and Ireland was on top of its game due to the vision and hard work of those involved, including Horse Racing Ireland and dedicated people like those involved in the Killarney Race Company. Killarney Race Company chairman Gerard Coughlan said the new stable block and the renovated existing stables was an indication of the many big improvements to come at the track. He said his main aim as chairman will be to work more closely with the local business community and to develop stronger ties between the town and the racecourse. “The races have a great deal to contribute to Killarney with the three annual festivals bringing 80 races over a total of 11 days. The conservative estimate is that the races are worth in the region of €6.2 million to Killarney with an additional €1.42 million in prize money,” he said. Mr Coughlan said the reputation of Killarney as a top-class racing venue is growing at a great pace and that was very much in evidence last Monday evening when 2017 Cheltenham winner Rock The World – trained by Jessica Harington and now owned by JP McManus – competed on day two of the meeting and didn’t actually win. The chairman also revealed that Killarney will seek to add to its 11 days of racing annually, whether by adding days to the three festivals or opting for a new stand-alone festival.

Step This Way To Help Set Wheels In Motion For Bus Fund Words: Eve Kelliher LACE on those walking boots and dancing shoes and limber up for a unique event that will benefit a most deserving cause. Killarney Walking Festival, which takes place from June 9-11, will include a charity sun “set” on Strickeen is in aid of the Kerry Parents & Friends bus fund. This event, including a walk and a Kerry polka set dance on the summit of Strickeen Mountain, takes place on Friday, June 9, departing Kate Kearney’s in the Gap of Dunloe at 7.30pm. The “bus fund” is the initiative of Agnes Rooney whose sister Mairead – cared for full-time by Agnes since their mother’s

passing in 2015 – has Down’s syndrome, and has been helped by the group for decades. Agnes herself admits she’d be lost without the association’s assistance, which has led to her ongoing attempt to raise €60,000 to purchase a wheelchair-accessible bus for the charity. To date the present fleet of 17 buses is deteriorating with no funding for replacement. “These buses take Mairead and her friends to work, home, hospital appointments, social training, respite and holidays,” said Agnes. “They travel all over Kerry and truly support them and their families in ways that the greater community may not understand.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around ENDA KENNY has retired as party leader of Fine Gael, but will continue to carry out his duties as Taoiseach in full until a successor is chosen. In a statement on Wednesday, Mr Kenny announced his decision to retire as Fine Gael party leader, after a 15-year tenure. Mr Kenny said he would carry out his duties in an acting capacity until his successor is elected and has asked that this be concluded by close of business on June 2. “I want to assure people that throughout this internal process, I will continue to carry out my duties and responsibilities as Taoiseach in full,” he said. Nominations for the contest to replace him will close on Saturday. Killarney MEP Seán Kelly, the leader of the Fine Gael Delegation in the European Parliament, said: “Enda Kenny is considered a hero by the European People’s Party and rightly so. It was Enda Kenny who inherited an economic crisis from a previous government and stepped up to that challenge with great courage and strength but managed to get the country through a bailout and exit that bailout successfully.”

Killarney Railway Station Highly Commended By Customers

But The Opposite Is The Case For One Rail Network Resident Comment

Words: Cormac Casey

KILLARNEY has been highly commended in the Munster category at this year’s Iarnród Éireann Best Station Awards. Catherine Cahill, Martin Carey and Maurice Moynihan of Killarney Railway Station were in Inchicore this week to pick up the certificate. Killarney was narrowly beaten to the top spot in Munster, by Templemore. David Franks, chief executive of Iarnród Éireann, said: “The Best Station Awards reward excellence in customer service at our railway stations. What is so special about these awards is that it is the customers that decide and I am delighted that so many of them voted.” However that customer service satis-

faction falls far short when it comes to residents along the rail network. As a resident on the Killarney to Mallow line, I am appalled with the condition of the junction at Cools, Headford, Killarney. After a reported €800,000 upgrade to automation in 2008, the junction was left like an abandoned building site of the recession. What currently stands on the site can only be described as two abandoned port-a-loos. Station manager Catherine Cahill denied a request to tidy up the area due to a lack of funds primarily due to the than extensive restoration of the Killarney Railway Station. I can only imagine the cost of that project for example, the use of the same joinery that Michael

Jarvey’s Heroic Efforts Ensure Accident Did Not Turn Into Tragedy THREE American tourists were thrown from their horse-drawn carriage on a tour of the Lakes of Killarney which saw the carriage teeter over the edge of a cliff, reports Anne Lucey in the Irish Examiner. It is understood the jarvey, named locally as Hugh O’Donoghue, made heroic efforts to ensure the dramatic situation did not turn to tragedy. The incident occurred in the heart of the Killarney National Park at the spot known as the Garden Quay, above Lough Leane. It is understood that the horse suddenly began to back towards the cliff edge

and the three Americans on board were thrown out. Mr O’Donoghue was injured trying to control the horse and carriage. The tourists were taken by ambulance to Kerry University Hospital and were released later that day. Mr O’Donoghue, the most seriously injured, was released from hospital five days after the incident. It was Mr O’Donoghue’s experience with horses saved the day and prevented the incident from being much worse, according to preliminary findings.

Flatley’s used on his €50 million restoration of Castlehyde castle. No expense spared I’m sure. Aside from being disrespectful to the residents in the area it is also disrespectful to our country’s history that

such a site has been completely disregarded, as it is here that the Headford Ambush occurred, a significant event in our political history. If you are a rail-line resident affected by Iarnród Éireann’s lack of “duty of care”, please contact us.

The Rare But Well Protected ‘Don’t Eat & Drive,’ says Danny Healy-Rae Kerry Alpha Male The treatment of women in the Kerry courts needs highlighting, says Anne Lucey

WOMEN are all too frequently the butt of male humour; often wink and nod type of stuff. Then there is the lack of respect for pregnant women. Days from delivering their babies they are being hauled before the courts on minor charges, cross-examined if they bring a challenge to a safety order, left sitting for hours on hard benches, questioned on witness stand, their condition callously ignored. I see it as part of a more general attitude to women in the Kingdom, particularly among some of the more powerful males which I like to call the Kerry Alpha Male species. Now they are not all from Kerry but, like the Kerry snail, this is where they are well preserved and highly protected! If it’s not banter about women remarks – which can’t be reported – and which has been highlighted in recent weeks in the Irish Examiner, there seems to be a complete lack of understanding for pregnant women particularly. I rang the Courts Service, in Dublin, the body which manages the courts across the country, and they tell me there are no special provisions for pregnant women in Ireland, regardless of whether they are at an advanced stage. However they make the point that it is up to the prosecutors – usually the gardaí – and the judge can intervene too – to bring it to the courts service attention, or to the open court, and to have the case adjourned. I have witnessed separate instances, one excruciating experience in Killarney in February where a highly pregnant woman was grilled and pulled through the ropes, metaphorically, confined in a witness stand, barely able to sit because of her condition, having to argue vociferously during a cross examination, in a case where she claimed there was breach of a safety order by her then former partner. The original safety order was anyway being appealed, it emerged, in the course of the hearing, and so one wondered if there was any point in the whole spectacle at all.

I can still see her shock at being called to give evidence, muttering she was due her baby the following week. Her background was very thoroughly exposed to the court; whether she might have been drinking in her eighth month in a pub, whether family members were before the courts often, and so on and so on and she had to argue vociferously about it all – in open court. And in what is now a celebrated report two weeks ago in Tralee, which there was banter at the expense of a pregnant garda who was not present in the court, and another instance which a slim, clearly advanced pregnant woman, in need of a maternity brace and the use of a crutch to carry her baby, was forced to sit on the uncomfortable wooden bench for more than two hours until her case was dealt with. She rocked herself back and forth. Her solicitor politely asked if her case could be heard at the outset and this was refused. So she sat in the front bench comforted by her husband (we know he was her husband because the judge asked on her way out was she married to him). And then, barely able to stand, the circumstances of her arrest and her offence became the butt of a joke! I have checked with my colleagues outside of Kerry – where to be fair there seems to be more women professionals to back each other up than there are here. There would be no way these remarks about women and rough treatment of pregnant women especially, would even take place in the first instance in old football rival Cork, for example. A lot of younger Kerry men are very refined and gentle; they remember they have sisters, daughters, mothers, girlfriends, partners and wives. And this lack of respect for women is not confined to the courts. I have seen it elsewhere. It’s time for women in Kerry to stand up to this treatment; it’s time for women’s organisations to come out.

KERRY TD Danny Healy-Rae hit the headlines on Wednesday as he compared eating a big meal to drink driving. The Independent TD hit out at the Road Safety Authority, saying it is on a “crusade to isolate people further in rural Ireland”. The Kilgarvan politician is objecting to plans to introduce a mandatory three-month driving ban for motorist caught with a blood alcohol level of 51-80mg of alcohol per 100ml. Currently such an offence is punished with a fine and penalty points. Speaking at the Oireachtas Committee on Transport Deputy Healy-Rae said: “Can I say to you, and many people will agree with me. If you eat too much and get in behind the wheel of a car, then you’re a danger on the road because you are likely to fall asleep after eating a big meal. “I for one, anyway, when I go home late this evening, when I know that, I don’t eat going in behind the wheel because I know what it will do.”

‘This Is The Single Greatest Witch Hunt Of A Politician In American History!’ US PRESIDENT Donald Trump lashed out on Thursday, saying he was the target of an unprecedented witch-hunt, a day after the Justice Department appointed a special counsel to investigate ties between his presidential campaign and Russian officials.

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL was urged to carry out immediate resurfacing works at Ross Road, Mission Road and the Ha Ha, Killarney, by Councillor Donal Grady. At this week’s council meeting, council management replied that repair works were carried out on 300m of the L-3905, Ross Road in Q4 of 2016. However, there is no funding currently available for further resurfacing works. This road-

way can be considered for inclusion in the next Multi-Annual Restoration Programme which is expected to be due for renewal in late 2017. The Mission Road, N71, is the responsibility of the Transport Infrastructure Ireland and this roadway has been brought to their attention as requiring resurfacing. Kerry County Council intends to ask the TII to extend the Port Road overlay contract to include Mission Road.

Basketball

Ireland Senior Men’s Basketball Head Coach Leads The Way In Killarney Words and pictures: Eamonn Keogh IRELAND Senior Men’s Basketball Head Coach Pete Strickland led a special once-off coaches clinic in Killarney Sport Centre on Tuesday night. Assisted by top American college coach Chris Harney (St Mary’s College Maryland) and Killarney’s James Weldon (Basketball Ireland Green Shoots Initiative Development Officer), the clinic was attended by several coaches from St Paul’s Killarney and coaches from others Kerry basketball clubs. Maryland native Pete Strickland was recently appointed as Ireland Head Coach following a very successful career coaching at college level in the USA. Pete’s connection with Ireland started way back in 1980 when he arrived in Ireland to play with Neptune Cork in the national league. he spent two seasons in Ireland and recalled fond memories of playing in Killarney during that golden era of Killarney basketball when the great Gleneagle side were the top team in the country. “I remember playing games in the St Brendan’s College gym where the huge crowd was squeezed in and right next to the action on the court. It was an amazing atmosphere and The Gleneagle had such a really good team then. Paudie O’Connor stood out and was a player ahead of his time. He had all the attributes of a great player and with two outstanding Americans in Tony Andre and Arnold Veasley alongside a good squad of local players, Killarney were a step ahead of many other teams in the league back then,” he said. Pete returned to Ireland several times over the years coaching at various basketball camps in Dungarvan and other venues. At one particular camp in Castleisland in June 1988, Pete met a young John Teahan for the first time and inspired his interest in the game. It was John’s first time playing basketball and was the start of an amazing journey where he went on to win national leagues and cups as well as playing for the Irish senior men’s team. Now in his mid 40s, John Teahan is still playing competitive basketball in the Kerry county league. At Wednesday night’s clinic, Coach Strickland and Coach Harney worked with young players from Rathmore and St. Paul’s demonstrating excellent coaching skills and how to get the best out of young players. St Paul’s Basketball Club Chairman Padraig Weldon made special presentations to Pete and Chris to mark the occasion of their visit to Killarney. Padraig also thanked Sean Murphy of Murphy’s and Lord Kenmare’s Killarney for facilitating their stay in town by providing accommodation for them.

I Don’t WannaCry No More Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech. support with suggestions. This week we’re going pure tech with very important information specifically the WannaCry Ransomware. The “WannaCry” Ransomware Virus was released into the world on Friday, May 12. This is the most virulent virus to hit the world, period. This virus highlights the need to ensure your computer operating system is upto-date and you are running good antivirus software. The “WannaCry” virus is delivered via email or perhaps a memory stick. Under no circumstances should you open and click on any link in an email you don’t recognise. If it’s important - pick up the phone and check first or simply delete the email - they will email back. If you get a message on your computer saying something like “Your personal files have been encrypted” with a warning you should pay to get your files unencrypted - again, under no circumstances should you attempt this.

You will not get your files back. The only way around this is to remove your files and restore from a backup. (See my previous articles regarding Backups and Online Fraud. If you think you have been infected - contact either myself or your tech support person immediately. By and large - this has only affected large business customers and is not specifically targeted to any individual. Lastly - if you are running Windows XP - you should consider upgrading immediately to Windows 8 or 10 as the patches will ensure your machine is safe.

Council Seeks Vacant Properties KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has issued a call for properties which have been vacant for more than one year for possible use for social housing purposes. The newly launched Repair and Leasing Scheme targets vacant properties as a possible source of social housing and provides property owners with an income stream that may be otherwise unavailable. The scheme provides that repair and improvement works to bring such properties up to the standard for rented accommodation are funded by the relevant local authority, in this case, Kerry County Council. The cost of the works is then deducted from rent/lease payments over an agreed lease term of at least ten years. There are a number of requirements in relation to the scheme: · The scheme is not available for private renting · The property must be vacant for at least 12 months · There has to be a social housing demand for the property locally · The property has to be viable to provide accommodation · The minimum lease term is dependent on the cost of repairs with a minimum lease period of 10 years and a maximum period of 20 years · The maximum cost of repairs allowable under the scheme will be €40,000

· The lease payments will be based on the general terms of social leasing which is set at 80% (85% for apartments) of the current market rental rates in the property location · The scope and cost of the works are agreed between the owner and Kerry County Council Properties in all areas will be considered but in particular the council is anxious to source properties in the main towns and villages in the county. The benefits for those considering availing of the scheme include: · Upgrade your property at no capital outlay from your own resources · Guaranteed rent · No loss of rent during vacant periods · No collection of rent or finding a new tenant · No dealing with tenants or routine maintenance · No advertising costs Application forms and further details are available on Kerry County Council’s website, www.kerrycoco.ie, or by contacting the Housing Department at 066-7183645 or by email at kerryrls@kerrycoco.ie Interested property owners should complete the application form and submit the relevant documents to the Housing Department, Kerry County Council, County Buildings, Tralee, Co Kerry on or before Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Garden Magic Everything’s Rosy In The Garden While pondering what to write about this week, Debby Looney was absentmindedly looking at an old rose in full flower, and her thoughts went to the origins of that rose.

I DISCOVERED an old rose in the ditch 14 years ago when we first bought our site. I replanted it in a sheltered fertile spot where it promptly repaid me by dying back for three years in a row! However, it changed its mind, suddenly started growing and now has recovered fully. Nature is funny that way! People either love, or hate, growing roses. As with everything related to gardening, I feel we must choose the perfect balance between work and result! If you believe the result is worth endless hours of work, or if you have a lot of time, then any rose is for you. However, if you are a gardener who likes to sit back and enjoy results with a minimum of effort, or if you have a busy life, well, then, you are a little more limited… “Wild” roses, such as Rosa glauca, Rosa rugosa or rambling roses are often the most resilient roses you can buy. Rosa glauca rubrifolia has beautiful bronze foliage with bright pink single flowers. The hips are spectacular in the autumn. Rosa rugosa is commonly used as hedging, being vigorous and disease free. There is a great variety, suitable for any garden, called ‘Frau Dagmar Hastrup’, which pale pink, very fragrant flowers are followed by large orange hips, on a dainty bush which stays small at 3ft. Rambling roses are an easy alternative to climbing roses, but do lack the large blooms of a climber such as ‘Paul’s Scarlet’. Hybrid tea roses, floribunda roses and David Austin roses all require a little more care. If you are diligent, however, there is not much to it. Prune roses in spring just before the leaves start appearing. In general, cut away diseased or dead wood, then prune into shape. Slant the cut away from the bud below that cut. Start spraying with a chemical such as Roseclear early on in the growing season, to prevent blackspot. Blackspot is a fungus, and spores are carried in on rain, so there is little we can do organically. Make sure to remove and destroy all affected leaves. Greenfly are the second problem to look out for. • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

‘Loss Of Town Councils Is Being Brought Home To People Of Killarney’ NOT wishing to rehash the issue of the abolition of town councils, but to the local populations, I feel, the estate management under the municipal district and Kerry County Council is failing the residents miserably. At a time of such effort by Tidy Towns groups to present our town in pristine condition for visitors and judges, the Tidy Towns committee is being let down by the poor maintenance of estates. Every estate in town requires a skirting of footpaths programme. Now we have a household charge that householders pay for the maintenance of estates. The condition of weeds growing wild in every estate in town is

a disgrace. Grass cuttings are being refused in the brown compost bins and being dumped to accumulate against every ditch or boundary wall in estates. The loss of town councils is being brought home to people of Killarney town. I would hope that the municipal authority would rejuvenate the maintenance of estates to the standard that was in place during the tenure of the former town council. Sean Counihan, 44 Ardshanavooley, Killarney

FOR over a decade I have been highlighting the urgent need for a fully staffed stroke unit in University Hospital Kerry, most recently at the February 2017 monthly Kerry County Council meeting. Such a facility is of vital importance in order to allow for the prompt treatment of the many, at least one in five of the population, who suffer Stroke. On a positive note the reply from the HSE to my notice of motion states that the hospital does have a robust pathway in place for the management of stroke and that on notification that a patient with stroke symptoms is being brought to the Emergency Department the proper protocol goes into place. Assessment, investigation and stroke management are fast tracked. CT scanning is prioritised and a decision is made about thrombolysis by the medical team. The reply further states that no treatment is delayed regardless of whether or not an admission bed has been identified. The above is a big advance from the situation that prevailed when I first had this matter on the agenda for a council meeting and this is reassuring for the general public. However, the reply further states that a dedicated stroke unit has not been established for a number of reasons. These include the absence of the required number of consultant geriatricians following the resignation of two of the three in 2013. A clinical nursing manager was allocated to the hospital as part of the clinical stroke programme but no expression of interest was received when the post was advertised. Due to minimal staffing levels in occupational therapy and speech and language these departments are not currently in a position to support any rapid assessment requirements of stroke patients. Because of the lack of appropriate staffing data is not being collected to document the times from presentation to admission. While it is good to be informed that progress has undoubtedly been made it is disappointing in a scattered and peripheral county that a facility on par with the very best is still not available. Prompt treatment of the highest order is the only way to guarantee the best possible outcome for those of us who will fall into the one in five category of stroke victims. Spanish Grand Prix FERNANDO ALONSO hit the Formula One headlines last weekend with an unexpected result. He finished his first full race of the season after five attempts. In front of his home crowd, he qualified 7th on the grid and finished 13 in the race. The current McLaren F1 car is plagued with reliability issues even before the season started mainly focused on the Honda power unit. The Honda and McLaren partnership dominated F1 in the past but since renewing its partnership three years ago is now languishing at the bottom of the current standings. Time is running out to keep the two-time world champion, Alonso, who is

currently in the US for the Indy 500 as McLaren are doing all they can to keep him happy. Another happy moment that started out as complete devastation when a young fan, Thomas Danel was captured on TV crying his eyes out on seeing his hero, Kimi Raikkonen crash out of last weekend’s grand prix. Quick thinking Ferrari person picked out Thomas from the crowd and invited him and his parents back to the Ferrari garage

Porsche Rolls Out One-Millionth 911 PORSCHE’S evergreen 911 has clocked up a notable milestone, with the one-millionth example – an ‘Irish Green’ Carrera S – rolling out of the Zuffenhausen factory this week with extra features that pay tribute to the 1963 original, including satin silver mirrors and door handles, a wooden steering wheel, green-backlit dials, houndstooth upholstery, gold badges and 20-inch Carrera Sport rims, the one-off is now set for a world tour comprising the Scottish Highlands, Germany’s Nürburgring, the USA, China and beyond. The 911 is among the most enduring sportscar

nameplates, with only the Mercedes SL (dating back to 1954) and Chevrolet Corvette (since 1953) preceding it. The difference is that whereas today’s version of the Merc and Chevy bear very little resemblance to their forefathers, in the Porsche’s case there is a clear evolutionary link to the original. But undoubtedly the ultimate endorsement of the 911’s durability is the fact that over 70 per cent of all the cars ever built are still drivable today. However the one-millionth 911 won’t be regularly driven following its world tour, with the German car maker confirming it is destined for the Porsche Museum.

to meet his heroes during the race and if that wasn’t enough they invited him to celebrate with the team at the podium. Formula one has always been distant when it comes to the fans but the new owners want to create more fan interaction and they are off to a good start. This kid will remember this for the rest of his life.

Grace Notes

Working In The Arts Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley gives an insight into her career choice

“WHAT made you decide to have a career as a singer?” This is a question that I am asked very frequently and it’s understandable given the unusual nature of what I do for a living. This question is normally followed by, “But what do you do for a day job?” I’m always amazed at how people seem to finally understand and accept my life’s choices when I tell them that I also teach singing. Teaching is widely accepted as a proper job whereas a career in performance or in the arts generally isn’t. I suppose I can see that, from the outside, it can look like a very “airy-fairy” kind of lifestyle but it is, in fact, the very opposite. Most people who work in the arts have years of training and practice under their belts.

Much like in other areas of work, we had to learn our craft and work very hard to become as skilled as possible. I think there are some obvious differences between a more regular job and a job like mine. My job is not a 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday type of job. One week can be crazy, the next week can be so quiet I wonder if the phone will ever ring again! A job like mine involves a lot of alone time and of course there are days I find that very difficult. I think that if you are content with your career, most of the time, then you should be happy with your choice. If it feels like it fits and you feel like “you”, then stick with it. In answer to the question, “What made you decide to have a career as a singer?” I didn’t decide. I have a huge love and passion within me for music and I cannot do anything else. Believe me, I have tried! •

Elite Universal Contour Body Wrap Summer finally here so it’s a great time to detox the body and lose a few inches, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Where it all began..Happy 21st

Happy 18th Birthday Tyler, Love from Mom, Dad, Hudson, Brooke and Carter xxx WOULD YOU LIKE TO INCLUDE A BIRTHDAY PHOTO FOR SOMEONE? Please submit your photo by Wednesday at 5.30pm, €20 per photo

WITH the Elite Universal Contour Body Wrap you can achieve a great inch loss and anti cellulite effect. We recommend a course of three wraps, to be taken seven to ten days apart. While doing the wrapping programme we recommend a three-week detox of healthy eating and reduced sugary foods. Although the Universal Body Wrap team say that three-four day detox is sufficient, the more detoxing you do during your course the better the results. Our clients have reported great results, including smoother, softer skin and amazing inch loss (not water loss) as this wrap encourages you to drink water unlike some wraps which just dehydrate the body.

The process

Michael McAuliffe, principal, Lissivigeen National School, Denis Breen and Billy Breen presenting Theresa Looney, patient liaison officer, Irish Kidney Association, Kerry branch, with 474.70 which was collected through the school’s no-uniform day. Also pictured are Miriam Long, Lissivigeen NS, and Colm Clifford, recent transplant recipient.

Before the treatment, your therapist will measure you at particular points on the body. Bandages which have been pre-soaked in our Classic Clay Solution are then applied using specialist wrapping techniques. You then go into heated blanket to keep warm while you lie back and relax for an hour while the treatment gets to work. You could use this time to get more out of your trip to the studio and indulge in additional treatments such as a facial or manicure. After 60 minutes your bandages are removed, your therapist will re-measure and you’ll be amazed by your inch-loss result. AS PARISHES reach out to engage with young people, the need for trained adult leaders has been identified. The Diocese of Kerry celebrated the commitment and dedication of 15 adults who have completed a training course in youth ministry recently. Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne presented the certificates to the participants at a graduation ceremony in John Paul II Pastoral Centre, Killarney.

“The course has developed the confidence and competence of leaders to deliver effective ministry with young people,” said diocesan spokeswoman Mary Fagan. She added: “Enabling the gifts of young people will make a real difference in Church, society and the world at large. This course will equip leaders to reach out and undertake this key role with young people.”

Savvy Rathmore Just About Get The Job Done It wasn’t exactly a vintage performance but the O’Donoghue Cup holders know how to win when it counts, writes Adam Moynihan County Championship (Round 1) East Kerry 1-10 Rathmore 1-12

Rathmore have that knack of getting over the line and it’s a trick this young East Kerry team will have to learn quickly

Rathmore are safely through to Round 2A of the County Championship following a narrow win over East Kerry in the Park on Sunday. East Kerry looked to be in control of this one and lead by five with a couple of minutes to go in the first half but Rathmore, who were looking a little lethargic, somehow rattled off 1-3 before the break to turn things around. Dara Roche swung the tie back in East Kerry’s favour with a goal midway through the second but the divisional side failed to register a single score in the final 16 minutes of play. Rathmore, impressively led by full forward Shane Ryan, kicked five unanswered points to seal a fairly remarkable comeback victory. East Kerry flew out of the traps and found themselves 6-2 up at the halfway point of the first period, Dara Roche (three), Ronan Buckley and Paudie Clifford (free) all raising white flags with a couple of Mark Reen frees just about keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Rathmore. The game was 18 minutes old before the reigning O’Donoghue Cup champions managed a point from play and it came from a familiar source, dangerman Shane Ryan gathering by the endline before turning back out and swinging over a fine score. A quickfire double from Dara Roche brought his tally to five and opened up a five-point East Kerry lead but a disastrous few minutes just before the interval completely undid all of their good work to that point. A pair of frees from Mark Reen and Shane Ryan cut the deficit to three before the lively George O’Keeffe capitalised on a defensive mix-up to steal in for a well-taken soccer goal. Ryan added another free and, despite not really getting out of second gear, Rathmore found themselves ahead. Things almost got a whole lot worse for East Kerry just seconds into the second half but experienced net-minder Colin Myers pulled off a superb save to deny the onrushing Ryan, while at the other end Jack Sherwood rattled the crossbar from a tricky angle. East Kerry did manage to find the back of the net in the 43rd minute when the rampant Dara Roche found space right in the middle of the goal. The Glenflesk marksman got a bit turned around but he swiftly steadied himself before firing a precise finish beyond Rathmore keeper Kenneth O’Keeffe.

Substitute Jeff O’Donoghue got in on the act a minute later to make it 1-10 to 1-7 and East Kerry looked to be in prime position to go on and claim a surprise win. Rathmore had yet to really get going, though, and this was the kick up the backside they needed. They held the East Kerry forward line scoreless for the entire fourth quarter as massive points from Ryan (three, one free), George O’Keeffe and a fisted effort from Mike Joe Kelleher propelled them to a twopoint win. East Kerry almost stole it at the death when Liam Kearney’s long-range pass was fisted goalwards by substitute David Clifford but the prodigious youngster’s effort went across the face of the goal and clipped the foot of the post.

Rathmore just have that knack of getting over the line in big games and it’s a trick this young East Kerry team will have to learn quickly if they’re to make a mark on this year’s championship. Next up for them is Mid Kerry in the losers’ round on Sunday. Rathmore, meanwhile, have been drawn at home to Feale Rangers who had a big win back in West Kerry. That game takes place on Saturday at 6.30pm. East Kerry scorers: Dara Roche (1-6, 2f), Ronan Buckley (0-1), Paudie Clifford (0-1, 1f), Pádraig de Brún (0-1) and Jeff O’Donoghue (0-1). Rathmore scorers: Shane Ryan (0-7, 4f), George O’Keeffe (1-1), Mark Reen (0-3, 3f), and Mike Joe Kelleher (0-1).

Dr Crokes And Rathmore Advance In Kerry SFC Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Dr Crokes 2-14 Mid Kerry 0-9 MUCH was expected of this contest as Mid Kerry had all 6 clubs to select from, the first time since 1969. Significantly they had to line out without Kerry stars Peter Crowley and Darran O’Sullivan as well as Colin McGillicuddy. He did come on in the second half. They also lost Nathan Breen their captain and full back injured after seven minutes. These were real body blows for Mid Kerry. Donnchadh Walsh moved to midfield from the number 14 spot. Johnny Buckley, the new Kerry captain, did not line for Dr Crokes as his knee is still not fully recovered from injury. Liam Carey, Mid Kerry’s best player throughout the game, opened the scoring with a point in the very first minute. It was an encouraging start for the divisional board side, but that was as good as it got for them, as Colm Cooper turned on the style for the All Ireland champions. He opened with a pointed free and in the sixth minute and then he ghosted in behind the Mid Kerry full back line picking up a good pass from Kieran O’Leary and shot the ball in to an empty net. He had 1-3 to his credit by the 12th minute and Mid Kerry had that lone point. Walsh came through from midfield for a point and two points from frees by Gavin O Grady as well as a Liam Carey point gave the Mid Kerry side five points at half time. Crokes were scoring freely especially their lethal full forward line of Cooper, Kiely and O Leary. The half-time score was Crokes 1-8 to 0-5 for John Fintan Daly’s team. David O’Leary corner back for Crokes was able to sally up field and score a very fine point. Cooper scored 1-4 of

that first half tally 1-1 from play. Dr Crokes were in a very strong position starting the second half leading 1-8 to 0-5 aided by the wind blowing down to the dressing room end of the pitch. Liam Carey did give Mid Kerry some hope in the 31st minute when he scored an excellent point against the breeze, but the game ended as a contest in the 33rd minute when Gooch picked out Kieran O Leary with a pin point foot pass and the latter obliged by sending the ball to the back of the net. 2-8 to 0-6 was too much of a leeway to make up and Mid Kerry did not do their prospects any good when they sent 3 balls wide. Points by defenders Gavin White, Alan O Sullivan and substitute Chris Brady widened the gap as Crokes emptied their bench using up their full quota of subs. Mid Kerry were a well-beaten side at the three

quarter stage when Liam Carey scored his fourth point. They did have plenty shots at goal but they were wayward as Crokes finished with points by Jordan Kiely, Daithí Casey and Paul Clarke. Crokes showed their class throughout but they will have sterner opposition in future games while Mid Kerry were at sea in this oneway contest. They will meet East Kerry in the loser’s round and on the evidence provided at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last East Kerry are fancied to win this one. Rathmore Defeat East Kerry Rathmore 1-12 East Kerry 1-10 A VERY youthful East Kerry side came very close to winning this entertaining game played at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. A gallant effort by David Clifford in the second minute of injury time almost came good. Liam Kearney lofted a high ball in to the Rathmore square and Clifford rose highest to flick the ball

apparently over the Rathmore line with Kenneth O’Keeffe scrambling to keep it out. However, the ball did not cross the goal line but came off the inside of O’Keeffe’s upright and somehow the ball stayed out. There was much speculation before the game that Kerry minor star David Clifford would line out with East Kerry, but the Fossa star was not introduced until nine minutes from the end. He was on the ball three times in those closing stages and he was so close to being the hero. It

In schools throughout Munster, boys and girls are eagerly awaiting the advent of the Munster hurling and football Championships for it also heralds the start of the Munster GAA Primary Game series. Championship day in Munster, hurling or football, would not be complete without the exhibition games provided by boys and girls from the competing counties. Two games with eleven players per team, one for boys and one for girls will take place on the day of each Munster Senior Championship clash. Games will be played at half-time during the sen-

ior match. Played at half-time during Munster Championship games, The Munster Primary Game give sportsmad boys and girls the opportunity to wear their county jersey on Big Match Day, sharing the spotlight with their heroes on their “Field of Dreams” in front of huge crowds of ardent supporters. Many children who made their inter-county bow in the Primary Game have gone on to greater things: Kerry midfield duo Anthony Maher and Denis Moran played in the Primary Game when they were in Sixth Class.

would not surprise me if starts in the losers round. This game was a shoot-out between Shane Ryan (seven points, three from play) and Dara Roche. The young East Kerry side faded out of the picture, but they can face the next loser’s round with confidence. They could well play David Clifford from the start in the next game versus Mid Kerry. He is a class act. The experienced Rathmore side will be happy to advance to round two.

smalltalk

Gneeveguilla native Sam Dobbins talks to Adam Moynihan about his Cedar Galaxy teammates, their rapid rise through Kerry football and his own exploits this season

Hi Sam. How’s things Ad?

Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Ronan Walsh.

Not too bad, thanks. What’s it like being part of Killarney’s newest soccer team? It’s great having Cedar in town as an option to play competitive soccer. The club was only formed six years ago by a bunch of friends that played astro together and we’ve had three promotions in six seasons so we’re doing okay.

How’s the 2016/17 campaign going so far? It’s been a bit of a disaster. We lost a couple of big players to other clubs and tried to replace them but it didn’t work out. We struggled a lot early on and we find ourselves battling relegation for the first time so it’s a big test for us.

Confident of staying up? I’d like to think we will stay up. We just have to keep putting the work in and hopefully the results will come. We’ve had a couple of good performances recently and we have three games left to survive so hopefully we’ll get over the line.

How have you been playing yourself? Overall I’d say probably 6/10. I got off to a very good start but then I went about ten games without scoring which was torture. I feel I’ve been playing well recently but everyone has kicked it up a notch in training and our captain Frank Cronin keeps on top of us. Also Joe O’Donovan has banged in some crucial goals so maybe that bit of friendly competition is helping me to improve on a personal level.

Who’s your best friend on the team? I like to think all the lads get on well together at this stage but if I had to pick one, I’d say Ger Foley. I go to his house for tea and his mom makes lovely sandwiches.

Who’s the biggest moaner? Me. Hands down. I’m always giving out about something but I would hope the lads don’t take too much notice.

If you had to transfer to another Killarney club, who would it be? QPR. I used to play for them, being from Gneeveguilla. Technically not Killarney but they use Mastergeeha as a home pitch so it’s close enough.

What’s your proudest sporting moment? Winning the U-15 cup. We beat Athletic in the final. I think ye beat us five or six-nil twice in the league so that was a nice win.

Must have been a different age group. I never lost to QPR! And the most embarrassing? So many easy open goals missed over the years. A hazard of being a striker.

If you had to compare yourself to Premier League player, who would it be? Diego Costa. That one is for Jeremy Moynihan - he compared me to him in the 7-a-side programme.

What are your three favourite sports in order? Soccer, football and snooker.

Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I always wanted to give hurling a bash. East Kerry isn’t a hurling stronghold though.

What’s the best sporting moment of all time?

Who spends the most time in the gym?

Manchester United winning the treble in 1999.

Mike Murphy. Loves his oats and protein too. He’s in great shape though to be fair.

Do you have any nicknames?

If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Cedar this year, who would it be? Adam Waterworth. He moved to England but he had a deadly touch and was a great winger.

Dobby.

Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? FlashScore. Handy for all sports.

What’s your most-used emoji?

Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Matthew Dilworth. GAA took over before he played senior unfortunately but he was a great underage player.

LAST weekend the final of the European Champions Cup took place amidst much fanfare in Edinburgh with Saracens taking on Clermont in the decider. Champions Saracens, who beat Munster in the Semi final at the Aviva a few weeks ago were raging favourites. Clermont, who beat Leinster were looking for their first European Cup Final win in three attempts. However, they must surely know how Mayo feel

What’s the best show on TV? Peaky Blinders.

What’s your favourite song at the moment? My sister would kill me if I didn’t say Ed Sheeran so it’ll have to be ‘Shape of You’ I guess.

What would you sing at karaoke? Yikes! ‘Friends in Low Places’ by Garth Brooks.

Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Jimmy Rainsford from the band Picture This. I got his number years ago for some reason and I still have it. He has probably changed it by now to be fair!

What would you have for your last meal? Bacon and cabbage.

Who would play you in a movie about your life? Jason Statham. He’s already bald like myself.

Last question: can you tell me a joke? What comes before Part B?

I don’t know. Partaaaaaaaayyyyyy.

Nice one Sam! Cheers Adam!

in the third weekend in September at this stage and remain the bridesmaid for another while at least as Saracens secured back to back championships in a cracking match. There can be little argument with the result as Saracens had every answer for the questions Clermont threw at them. Meanwhile Munster compete in the semi final of the Pro 12 tomorrow, taking on the Ospreys at Thomond Park in what should be another cracker of a match. Limerick can expect a sea of Red as Rassie’s men push to finish off this difficult year on a high. Leinster take on Scarlets in the other semi final which takes place tonight at the RDS. Every fan of Irish rugby will be hoping for an All Irish final on May 27,

especially as the final takes place in Dublin. Fingers crossed the Red Army of Munster will be marching on the capital in a weeks time. Closer to home Killarney RFC held our Youth and Seniors awards night last Friday night at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. A fantastic occasion for the club as we celebrated the most successful year in the club’s history with the seniors winning 2 cups and promotion as well as the U14s winning the West Munster League and Cup finals. It was a night of celebration as we toasted the achievements of the U16s and U18s as well as the hard work of all involved. Well done to everyone who attended on the night.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Sympathy - Tragically Annette Mannix was killed on the Killarney Bypass while out cycling and the club would like to offer its sincere sympathies to the Mannix family at this time - We are very privileged to present the John Mannix Cup each year to the angler with the heaviest Trout caught in competition and this cup was presented by Annette’s family in memory of her late father John. Also on the same day, a true gentleman of the fishing community in Killarney & Kenmare - Jerry Bambury, put out his lines for the last time on Lough Lein .His trusty boat , called Saoirse after his Granddaughter, landed back into the dock in Muckross with Jerry on board but sadly he had passed on to his eternal reward . Jerry , a renowned Trout and Salmon Angler ,was a strong advocate of angling in the community and was a committee member in the club for many years .His charitably works for St. Mary of the Angles was testimony to his character and commitment .He truly enjoyed his trips over to Killarney for his fishing and chats , while his passing came too soon - departing us while out fishing would be in a manner which he would have approved of !. As he now sets out his lines in the great trolling ground in the sky , We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and wide circle of friends. Competition - On the fishing scene, the recent Munster Lake Competition was fished recently in the midst of lovely weather , still the caliber of anglers taking part ensured that a catch would be recorded and require the competitors to be on their best form . From the Club’s perspective , our top

19.05.17 finishing angler was Tom Sweeney, who finished 10th and should qualify to fish the ITFFA Interpro competition on Lough mask as well as the Nationals . Gary Fleming finished 32nd and should qualify to fish the Nationals. On the Club competition scene, our postponed Batty O Brien Memorial Cup Competition , will now take place further out in the angling year and we will confirm a date in due course.

The team representing our Club in the Jimmy Bruen Shield has now advanced to the West Munster Final which has been scheduled to be played at Tralee Golf Club on Wednesday the 24th of May at 4.00 P.M. When we will be up against Newcastle West Golf Club. Club Captain Declan McCarthy is also hoping that the support for the team at Tralee on the 24th will be as good as it was in Dooks last weekend, and several of the team remarked that whenever they were down in their matches, they gained tremendous encouragement from the many members both Men and Ladies who had travelled to support the team. Killarney were up against Waterville Golf Club in the 2nd round which we won by a margin of 3 and a half points to 1 and a half points. Tom Long & David Moloney won 2/1. James Curran & Ger Moroney won 2/1. Dan Doona & Padraig Sweeney won 2/1. Liam Hartnett & Jason Arthur lost 4/3. Dermot Roche & Darren Mulcahy were called in when level with 2 holes to play. The result belies the tightness of the tussle, as after 9 holes we were behind in 4 of the 5 matches, and all square in the 5th match In the 3rd round we faced

19.05.17 our near neighbours and friends from Beaufort Golf Club and again we were behind in the early stages, but again the team staged a great recovery and in the end were comfortable winners by a margin of 3 and a half matches to 1 and a half matches, Dermot Roche & Darren Mulcahy won 3/2 Peter McEnery & Ryan Kelliher lost 4/3 James Curran & Ger Moroney won 2/1 Liam Hartnett & Jason Arthur had posted our 1st win of the tie when they won 5/4 Dan Doona & Padraig Sweeney were called in when level after 16 holes. In the semi-final Killarney faced home favourite’s Dooks Golf Club, and a very tight ding-dong match was expected and was exactly what we got. Tom Long & David Moloney won 1 up Dermot Roche & Darren Mulcahy won 2 up Liam Hartnett & Jason Arthur with a 5/4 victory Both matches with James Curran & Ger Moroney, and Padraig Sweeney & Peter McEnery were called in from the 18th fairway and 17th tee, respectively with both matches standing at all square. Declan remarked afterwards that we had only lost 2 games out of 15 played in our three matches over the whole weekend, which was a fantastic achievement, and a great credit to the management team of Tomas Barry, Sean Casey & Eugene O’Sullivan. The competition on Sunday the 14th of May was the Kerry Petroleum sponsored singles stroke played on Mahony’s Point, the competition was won by Paudie Horan with 67, and John O’Connor was 2nd also with 67, beaten by a better back 9 holes. Dr Crokes

Senior County Championship - 1st Round. Dr Crokes 2-14 Mid Kerry 0-9 We got off to a good start in the Premier Championship in the County as a result of a 2-14 to 0-9 victory over Mid Kerry. The Visitors suffered a blow before a ball was kicked as Peter Crowley and Darren O’Sullivan were unable to play. We got a good start also in the game itself, scoring 1-4 without reply in the first ten minutes even though we were playing against the stiff breeze. Mid Kerry had a point in the 12th minute but we had the next two points to end the first quarter six points in front. The second quarter of the half was evenly contested. Both sides scored three points in this period to leave us 1-8 to 0-5 ahead at the interval. The visitors had the first score of the 2nd half but a Kieran O’Leary goal in the 34th minute put us eight pts in front. Three unanswered points by us extended our lead to eleven points at the end of the third quarter. Both sides ran their benches in the final quarter with both sides equalising one another on the scoreboard to leave us winners on a score of 2-14 to 0-9. Our management must have been happy with our display but will not be

Killarney Legion

CO. CHAMPIONSHIP RD.1 Killarney Legion 0-15 Kenmare Shamrocks 1-12. Both sets of supporters of these two sides certainly got their nerves well and truly tested in this tense and absorbing 1st.rd.game played in Derreen. The football may not have been of the highest standard at times but the closeness of the encounter and the seesaw nature of the scoring made it compulsive viewing. If the Legion were to overturn their club championship defeat to the same opposition then they would have to limit Stephen O Brien and Sean O Shea’s in-

fluence, this they did with Chris Davies doing a fine man marking job on O Brien and Darragh Doherty holding up his end. One problem though was the concession of frees which led to O Shea notching 6 from dead ball chances. Legion captain Danny Sheahan had a tremendous game on Paul O Connor and overall the Legion backs did well. Kenmare defence also in which Dara Crowley and Sean O Sullivan were no less effective and this was the springboard for much of their attacks. The first half was especially tense as reflected by the halftime score which saw the Legion go in ahead 4pts.to 3.What Could have been a critical moment for the Legion was the awarding of a penalty just on the stroke of halftime as Jamie O Sullivan smartly turned Dara O Shea and was hauled down just as he was about to shoot. Up stepped James O Donoghue but his low shot was turned away one handed by Kieran Fitzgibbon in the Kenmare goal. Crucially the same player brought off another timely stop midway through the second half when Tom Moriarty bore down on goal but again was denied by the keeper. The second period was far more fluid as both sides went for it and the scoring rate increased as a consequence. While O Shea was Kenmare’s scorer in chief Jamie O Sullivan was his equal as he hit 4 minors and became more and more of a problem for the Shamrocks. James O Donoghue also made a telling contribution as he bagged 5 pts. For his side. As the clocked ticked into Injury time it looked like the Legion had nicked it as Finbar Murphy cooly slooted over after good work by O Donoghue but in a last gasp sally O Shea levelled from 40m.to send the game to extra time. Kenmare sprung from the traps at the very start of extra time as sub Kevin Price struck for a goal after 40 seconds it could have been a fatal blow for the home side but keeping their cool they gradually chipped away at the deficit and points from Cian Gammell,Jonathan Lyne and Conor Keane levelled matters to live to fight another day. On the positive side the Legion created goal chances, they had a sound defence, and in adversity kept cool and were rewarded for that. The replay no doubt will be another

tense tight affair as these two sides continue their trilogy. Many thanks to those who helped on the day to make sure all ran smoothly - which it did. FIXTURE - Replay Co.Championship V Kenmare Shamrocks,Sunday 21st.May In Kenmare at 2.30p.m. HOGAN CUP WINNERS - It was nice to see Robert Osbourne,Michaél Devlin,Barry Slattery and Darren Looney being acknowledged for their part in the Sem’s fine victory in this years Hogan Cup at half-time last Sunday. Sem Youngsters To Represent Ireland In Wales

Words: Adam Moynihan

A team of young soccer stars from St Brendan’s College will travel to Swansea in Wales this week to represent Ireland in the Allen McKinstry Cup. The Sem were invited by the FAI to play for their country on the back of last year’s Bank of Ireland First Year Cup triumph. Their first group game is today (Friday) against England’s national champions Thomas Telford and they’ll follow that up with a tie against Scottish champions St Ninian’s. This is the second time the school has participated in the prestigious tournament as the victorious U-15 National Cup winning side also took part in 2014. That year, the Sem made it to the final only to lose 1-0 against Ysgol Plasmawr of Wales. The players and coaches will be hoping to go one better this time around. For updates, stay tuned to the FAI Schools Twitter account @faischools The St Brendan’s College soccer team who will represent Ireland in the Allen McKinstry Cup. and the Sem’s own account @soccerinthesem.
