Skellig Michael Looks Out Of This World In New Trailer For Star Wars

Songs Of Praise As Friary Folk Group Celebrate Three Decades THE 11.30am Mass at the Franciscan Friary in Killarney has been home to their folk group for the last 30 years. Many people have come and gone over that time and indeed some faces have been there from the very beginning. Over the weekend of May 13 and 14 as many former and current members will gather together at the Franciscan Friary, Killarney, to mark this milestone with a private mass on Saturday evening and the full contingent of 50 singers and musicians will perform at 11.30am mass on Sunday morning. A celebratory lunch is planned for Sunday afternoon. “It’s a unique group that has, we hope, enhanced the 11.30am Mass at the Friary for 30 years,” said Elaine Burke who has been in the group from the very beginning.

It’s a unique group that has, we hope, enhanced the 11.30am Mass at the Friary for 30 years

GET ready to see Skellig Michael and the Wild Atlantic Way go stellar! It’s the day that Star Wars fans everywhere have been waiting for – the hotly anticipated, first look ‘teaser’ trailer for the upcoming Star Wars – The Last Jedi has just been released and it features stunning footage of Skellig Michael our very own Wild Atlantic Way. The trailer was released in Orlando, Florida, at the 2017 edition of Star Wars Celebration, the annual fan convention described as the ‘ultimate fan experience’, which attracts Star Wars devotees from around the world. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke box office records around the world in late 2015, bringing the magnificent scenery of Skellig Michael and the Wild Atlantic Way to the attention of millions of people everywhere. The fact that Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, due for release this December, was also shot on location along the Wild Atlantic Way is another fantastic coup for Irish tourism – and we’re absolutely delighted that the Wild Atlantic Way features so heavily in the first peek of the next episode.” Skellig Michael’s appearance in the last instalment of Star Wars presented Tourism Ireland with a tru-

ly unique opportunity to highlight the Wild Atlantic Way to fans of the science fiction franchise around the world. And, the good news for Irish tourism is that this didn’t signal the end of the Star Wars journey here. The director of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, returned to Skellig Michael with his cast in September 2015, picking up the story from the iconic moment in Episode VII, when Rey found Luke Skywalker on the stony steps of Skellig Michael. The location scouts were so taken with the Wild Atlantic Way that they came back for a second shoot in May 2016. Locations along the western seaboard were handpicked to represent the planet Ahch-to in Episode VIII – due to hit the big screen on December 15. The Star Wars folks obviously enjoyed their time here. In fact, when the Irish shoot wrapped, Lucasfilm took out no fewer than eight ‘thank you’ ads in local newspapers in the West of Ireland, saying the cast and crew were “captivated by the Wild Atlantic Way and their journey to Ireland”. Mark Hamill even tweeted: “How I will miss IRELAND. Its beauty, its people, its … snackfood” (in a reference to our Tayto crisps!). See Tourism Ireland’s special Star Wars section on Ireland.com.

“We’ve all made lifelong friends through the group as well and we have always been fully supported and encouraged by all the friars that have gone through the Killarney Friary over that time.” Another original member and a well-known Killarney performer, Derek O’Leary reminds us that the group has also participated in many charitable causes since their existence. “From very early on we have always ran charitable fundraising events that have included a bed push to Cork, three charity CDs and our annual carol singing events all of which have raised over €75,000 for local causes.” Derek added: “Over the last few months as we’ve been busy organising the reunion, we have been reflecting on members past and present and the time that has passed. We think we have sang at about 1400 masses over that time which is hard to believe.”

The Friary Folk Group, Killarney, is celebrating its 30th anniversary on May 13 and 14 at Mass and a celebratory lunch on the Sunday. Members of the Friary Folk Group include, Dee O’Sullivan, Sarah griffin, Derek O’Leary, Aileen Griffin, Elaine Burke, Olivia Coleman Jennie Vidal, katrin pietzonka, Louise Jevons. Excitement Builds As Killarney Gets Ready To Walk For Nathan Always one of the most eagerly anticipated mornings of the year, Nathan’s Walk, or Darkness into Light as the event is known nationally, will take place on May 6. This will be the seventh annual Darkness into Light march in Killarney as the fundraiser continues to get bigger and more successful with each passing year. The event is hosted by Marie and Denis O’Carroll who tragically lost their 14- year-old son Nathan to suicide in 2007. The aim is to generate much needed funds for the suicide and self-harm awareness centre Pieta House, while also raising awareness of an issue which has been all too frequently stigmatised in this country. Darkness into Light started with approximately 400 people walking the 5km course in Dublin’s Phoenix Park in 2009. This year, there will be approximately 150 venues across Ireland and worldwide. In 2016, over 130,000 people took part in the events. Founded in Dublin in 2006, Pieta House now has services nationwide. Pieta offers free counselling to those suffering from suicidal ideation, those who have been bereaved by suicide and people who are engaging in self-harm. Nathan’s Walk will start at 4.15am at the Killarney Race Course and participants are invited to walk, jog, skip or run the 5km route at their own pace. The march begins in darkness and ends as the sun comes up and there’s sure to be another massive turnout for this symbolic event.

Nathan’s Walk was launched at the Porterhouse, Killarney on Tuesday. The Darkness into Light walk will take place on May 6 from Killarney Race Course. Pics: Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan.

Speaking after the official launch which took place at the Porterhouse on Tuesday, Nathan’s mother Marie said the family were excited about this year’s walk. “We’re really looking forward to it,” she said. “We’re hoping for another great turnout.” She also thanked The Porterhouse for making a wonderful job of hosting the launch and Senator/founder of Pieta House Joan Freeman, Kieran Brady and Kieran O’Brien (Pieta House Limerick) for attending.

Although it will be possible to register on the day, the organisers suggest signing up online at http://dil. pieta.ie/ before April 27 to save time and to get your official Darkness into Light t-shirt. There will also be pre-registration at the Killarney Race Course on May 3, 4 and 5 from 5-8pm. You should also bring proof of registration (either printed or on your phone) and arrive 30 minutes before the start time.

Murder

Fresh Appeals For Information On Unsolved Kerry Murder On April 19, 2012, 58-year-old father of two James Cahillane was discovered deceased at his home at Ardraw in Beaufort. As a result of subsequent enquiries a full murder investigation was launched. Mr Cahillane had spent the previous evening watching a football match at a bar in Killorglin before getting a taxi home. At approximately 2.05am his neighbours spotted a blaze at his house and the emergency services were called to the scene. A post-mortem showed that the victim had been assaulted and suffered several head injuries before the fire. Gardaí confirmed that the head of a hammer had been discovered at the scene and

may have been part of a damaged murder weapon. It’s believed that the destruction of the house by fire was a deliberate effort to conceal the crime and destroy evidence. A murder investigation was launched but despite significant assistance from the public, the crime remains unsolved. On the 5th anniversary of the tragedy a further appeal is being made for information to assist in bringing the perpetrator(s) to justice. The investigation will be featured in the upcoming edition of Crime Call which will be aired on Monday, April 24. The daughter of the deceased Lisa Cahillane will feature in the programme

along with Garda investigators. There was a briefing in Killarney Garda Station on Wednesday to highlight the upcoming appeal on Crime Call and to renew public awareness of the case. Speaking at the briefing, Superintendent Flor Murphy said: “I am convinced there are people in the Killorglin and mid-Kerry area who may have some information in relation to this unsolved murder. “Five years have passed. Friendships, loyalties, and associations may have changed,” he added. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6671160 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111.

The Rapunzel Foundation A generous Killarney mother and daughter have shown their charitable side by donating some of their hair to charity. Melissa and Kate Culloty both donated their ponytails to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charitable organization that works to improve the lives of those living with hair loss (alopecia) through fundraising as well as by collecting hair for wigs. The charity is the brainchild of Anna Furlong, a hair salon owner from Wexford. The Foundation’s hugely successful Ponytail Campaign asks brave volun-

teers to grow their hair out to 14 inches or longer before getting their ponytails cut at official Rapunzel-affiliated hairdressers. Melissa and Kate entrusted local hairdresser Norma Doyle to make the snip. It takes around twenty donations to make a single wig so the sacrifice is hugely appreciated by the organisers, who say that the new hair helps to greatly improve the lives of alopecia sufferers the world over. Glenflesk Rambling House There was a great evening’s entertainment on Easter Sunday night thanks to the Glenflesk Rambling House. The event was the latest in a series of fundraisers organized by the Friends of Maureen Kelliher. Maureen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in February of this year and since then her dayto-day life changed drastically. Unable to walk without support, Maureen must use a walking aid to get around and everyday tasks have become a struggle. Friends and family have shown fantastic community spirit to rally around Maureen by organising a coffee morning, card drive and most recently an exciting night of music, song, dance and poetry. Speaking after the latest fundraiser, friend Mary McCarrick thanked all the participants and all those who attended on the evening. “A great night was had by all,” she said.

It’s Going To Be A Close Shave For Donal

HIS niece Sadhbh Lalor has inspired Kilcummin man Donal O’Sullivan to grow a beard and go without his regular barber services for his crowning glory in aid of a good cause. This Sunday, April 30, Donal will take centre stage in The Klub Bar in Kilcummin for the finale of his hugely popular fundraiser in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. “My niece Sadhbh, who lives in Laois, inspired me to generate much-needed cash for local Down syndrome charities, which provide therapies such as physiotherapy, speech and language and occu-

pational therapy, as well as mental health support services,” said Donal. “This is all done through the generosity of the general public, branches receive no financial help from any government agencies.” Because of the local feedback Donal and his wife Éadaoin decided to organise a fundraising night with the help of the Klub Bar Kilcummin to raise much needed funds for Down Syndrome Ireland. Tidy Towns Awareness Is Growing Constantly

David, Diane and Jacob, staff at Haven Pharmacy Kennellys. The business is proud to be associated with Killarney Tidy Towns and carries out a weekly litter pick-up on Rock Road.

SINCE the county clean-up began six years ago, awareness has grown as well as the volunteer force. From 800 volunteers in 2011, this year’s clean-up attracted 5,000 last Saturday. “There is greater awareness among the general public not to litter the roads of our county,” said Johnny McGuire of Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns. The hard work and commitment by KWD Recycling has borne fruit this year, particularly with the fantastic uptake in volunteers and the greater awareness among the general

public these are our roads and this is how we deal with them. We should take ownership of this initiative which began here in Kerry and is now copied in other counties.” Meanwhile, Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns has joined forces with schools and businesses as well as neighbourhoods to organise weekly litter pick-ups.

Tips From The Experts At The Health & Wellbeing Evening Hosted By Lee Strand And The National Dairy Council FOUR hundred people attended the Lee Strand & National Dairy Council Health & Wellbeing Evening on Thursday in the Brandon Hotel in Tralee. The evening was a star studded event with a host of high profile speakers including former Irish Olympian Derval O’Rourke; Kerry Football Legend and Dancing with the Stars Winner Aidan O’Mahony; dietician Paula Mee and RTÉ’s Fitness & Performance Expert Joe O’Connor. Radio Kerry’s Deirdre Walsh was a wonderful MC at the event. Paula Mee kicked off the evening with a presentation on Nutrition & You and encouraged us to Grow Strong; Be Strong and Stay Strong. Paula believes that you don’t have to completely overhaul your diet to make an impact on health. Small changes, made repeatedly, can have a big and positive effect. RTÉ’s Fitness and Performance Ex-

pert Joe O’Connor has appeared on Ireland’s Fittest Family for the past 4 years and currently working with Athletics Ireland, Horse Sport Ireland and Limerick GAA. Joe presented Fitness 4 Health and stated “One size does not fit all when it comes to fitness and training. Adopting a fitness regime that somebody else enjoys will not necessarily be one that you will enjoy.” He suggested identifying your limiting factors, setting goals and developing a plan to achieve those goals. An engaging Q&A followed with Aidan O’Mahony, hot off his impressive win and dance moves on RTÉ’s Dancing with the Stars. Aidan spoke about the challenges of learning to dance for the popular show, his successful sporting career and also gave the audience an insight into his nutrition and exercise regime. Irish Olympian and cookery book

author, Derval O’Rourke, ended the evening with a demonstration of some her favourite healthy recipes. Derval showed the audience how to make delicious and healthy Overnight Oats with fruit toppings, her Stopwatch Brown Bread, a simple Toma-

to Soup, a Mexican Burrito Bowl and Apple and Cheese Stacks. Derval’s recipes can be found at www.ndc.ie/ recipes All proceeds from the event admission tickets and raffle went to the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation.

Search For Owner Of $100,000 In US Bank Words: Eve Kelliher

IT HAS generated much speculation since Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed that a US twinning association is keen to trace the owner of a considerable sum of money. And we can confirm that since our Easter edition hit the shelves, the Killarney Town Twinning Association along with the Sister Cities Association of Springfield, Illinois, have been able to progress their search further. An amount believed to be in excess of $100,000 could rightfully belong to someone living in Killarney, according to the Sister Cities Association of Springfield. “The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office has in their possession a large sum of money, possibly belonging to a resident of Killarney, Ireland,” said Janet Kenney of the Sister Cities Association of Springfield, Illinois. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office realised that Springfield has a sister city/twin city relationship with Killarney and so Ms Kenney got in touch with Sean Counihan, chairman, Killarney Town Twinning Association. The amount of money in question may be in excess of $100,000.00, added Ms Kenney. “Apparently this money was abandoned/forgotten in an Illinois bank account and has been seized by the Illinois State

Cinema Killarney To Screen Lady Macbeth TO CELEBRATE the release of the period drama Lady Macbeth in Irish cinemas, a special question-and-answer screening will take place in Cinema Killarney on Saturday, April 22, at 6.30pm. Oscar-nominated Cromane filmmaker Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly will attend the screening and will take part in a post-screening Q&A. The screening will be held in association with the Kerry Film Festival and KFF Artistic Director Maeve McGrath, will moderate the ques-

tion-and-answer session. The film takes place in rural England in 1865. Katherine (Florence Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Lady Macbeth is already a huge hit on the festival circuit, where it

has picked up a host of audience and performance awards at Toronto, LFF, San Sebastian, Zurich, Glasgow and Dublin this year. Florence Pugh also received the Breakthrough Award for which both she and director William Oldroyd were nominated at this year’s Evening Standard Film Awards. Tickets for the Cinema Killarney screening on April 22 can be purchased here: https://cinemakillarney.admit-one.eu/?p=tickets&perfCode=24264

School

Opening Of New Classroom In Rathmore AMIDST great fanfare, the new Materials Technology Wood (MTW)/Construction Studies room was opened in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore. Current and former teachers, pupils, both past and present, parents, as well as Department of Education inspectors attended the grand opening. Local curate, Fr Pat O’Donnell provided a blessing before the classroom was formally opened by chief examiner for Construction Studies Seán O Broin. When Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra opened its doors to students in September 1998, the MTW/Construction Studies room in the new school was not built to required Department of Education specifications, mainly due to budget constraints at the time. When the Department of Education issued a new schedule of accommodation in early 2000, a new MTW/Construction Studies room was included. Funding was granted for this phase in 2016 and construction began in May of the same year, a process that took over seven months to complete. In order to equip the room, further funding had to be secured from the Department of Education. At the end of a long and protracted process, equipment for the room was purchased in the autumn of 2016. In what is one of the best-equipped and modern construction studies room of its kind in the country, it has all the traditional equipment of a standard wood work room but also boasts top of the range IT facilities for design and manufacture of students’ work, including a laser cutter, 3-D printing, and C & C operating machinery. The woodwork teachers, Seamus O’Connell and James O’Halloran, thanked the school’s Board of Management and in particular the school principal Denis Kerins for supporting them on their endeavour to achieve the best wood work room in Ireland.

Show At Muckross Park

FIVE-STAR fashion was top of the agenda at the five-star Muckross Park Hotel recently when locals pulled out all the stops to support Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. Award-winning designers, milliners and leading boutiques showcased their new season collections on the evening. The show was produced by the Norma O’Donoghue Model Agency with Kerry Radio’s Alan Finn acting as MC. Also joining the models on stage was Dancing with the Stars winner Aidan O’Mahony. Designers taking part were Marion Murphy Cooney, Hazel Comyn, Tina Griffin, Charlotte and Jane, Rebekah Wall and Cathy Troth to name but a few with McBees, Kerry’s Boutique, Jasmine Boutique, Christy’s Irish Stores, White Willow Bridal Kenmare and Formally Yours Menswear also showing. The theatrical grand final of the show was by none other then well known designer to the stars Claire Garvey. “We finished the show with Claire’s amazing collection which she sent to me a few days previous. When I was going through her pieces I noticed two male jackets with the gowns for the models,” said Norma. Claire Garvey was the designer of the jackets Julian Benson wore on Dancing with the Stars. He was one of the judges on the show and wore her jackets throughout the 12 weeks. “She had sent me two of them and I was delighted when Aidan O’Mahony along with Enda Walshe joined the models in the finale wearing the jackets. Julian would have been proud!” Norma said. The organisers thanked all those who sponsored and supported the event.

8 Good Reasons why I should provide for my Retirement through a Pension Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Retirement Planning Adviser, Denis Murphy, Premier Financial Services, discusses why funding a pension is so important.

1. WHAT WILL THE STATE PENSION BE IN THE FUTURE? The State Pension (Contributory) personal full rate for a single person is currently €233.30 per week. • Demographic changes in Ireland, will put pressure on government finances as the cost of state pensions and health care for the elderly increase.

2.

STATE PENSION AGE INCREASING TO 68 Legislation is now in place that will increase the age at which the state pension becomes payable in the future to age 68 based on your date of birth.

3. LIFE EXPECTANCY

Life expectancy for those born in Ireland is now 78 years for males and 82 for females

(Source: CSO 2013).

Your retirement savings may need to last for up to 30 years after you finish working.

4. INCOME TAX RELIEF Income tax relief is still available on contributions made personally to a pension. This relief is available on up to 40% of the contribution for a top rate tax payer, or 20% for a standard rate tax payer. For a free initial consultation call Denis now on

5. TAX FREE

RETIREMENT LUMP SUM Tax free retirement lump sums are available when taking retirement benefits. You can take 25% of your pension fund as a retirement lump sum or with a company pension you can instead choose to take a retirement lump sum of up to one-and-a half times your final salary, depending on the length of time employed. The maximum total tax-free amount is €200,000. A retirement lump sum of between €200,000 and €500,000 is subject to standardrate income tax, currently 20%.

6. APPROVED RETIREMENT FUND (ARF) The ARF option has been extended to all members of Defined Contribution (DC) company pensions. The ARF option gives what many individuals want in terms of • control over income drawdown • control over investment options 7. GROSS ROLL UP Pension funds are exempt from Irish income and capital gains taxes and therefore the growth is Gross until drawdown at retirement. 8. INVESTMENT

Pensions allow for a wide range of investment options to suit the risk appetite of every client.

New Austrian Charter Flight Waltzes Into Kerry OVER 2000 passengers will fly into Kerry over the coming months following the commencement on Monday (April 17) of a new charter service, operated by Austrian travel company Moser Reisen. The red carpet was rolled out and the champagne was flowing at Kerry Airport to welcome the first 200 people who arrived into the Kingdom on the first flight which landed just after 8.30am.

The Manager of Kerry Airport, Peter Moore, said: “These charters will operate throughout the months of April, May and June with flights arriving into Kerry from Graz Airport which is the 2nd largest airport in Austria and Linz Airport which is the 3rd largest airport in Austria. This charter series will bring 2,200 tourists directly into the county of Kerry. This is the first charter series of its kind into Kerry and the first charter series of its kind from Austria.”

Nathan Carter On His Way To Killarney KILLARNEY will be getting set for some toe-tapping nights of entertainment as country music legend Nathan Carter tunes up to perform in the INEC in the next fortnight. Following a year of chart-topping album sales, capacity concert shows and a hugely successful television series, the Belfast and Dublin arena shows inspired the star to put pen to paper about just what it feels like to be living the dream: “We’ve enjoyed the most phenomenal success in recent years and I’m so lucky to be living out my dreams as an entertainer. “Touring, recording and filming are the only things I’ve ever really wanted to do and growing up in Liverpool, playing in bars and clubs, sometimes it all felt like a bit of a pipe dream! Amazingly, with the support of my family, amazing fans and great team, I’ve seen those dreams become a reality.” Penned alongside acclaimed writer Don Mescall, Livin’ the Dream is a

brand-new, original track to celebrate the singer’s achievements to date and looks ahead to the exciting days still to come: “The arena shows are incredibly exciting – probably the biggest achievement of my touring career to date,” said Nathan. “The band and I just sold out two arena shows in Belfast and Dublin in two amazing venues, so it seemed like a great milestone to write about. “I’ve been attending arena shows all my life, sitting up in the balcony or down in the crowd listening to my idols like Brad Paisley and Elton John. To play in these venues, stand in their shoes and see how these places look from the other side will be incredible and I can’t wait. It’s a dream I hope to keep living out again and again!” Livin’ the Dream can be bought now from iTunes. You can see Nathan in the INEC Killarney from Friday, May 5, Sunday, May 7.

This service began in the grounds of St Marys of Angels Beaufort adjacent to St Francis Special School run by the Franciscan Sisters. In 2005 the Franciscan Sisters decided they could no longer run the campus, they handed over the campus to St John of Gods to run. The room the children were using at “Tig Roisin” was needed for other services. The parents got together to form a committee to set up a standalone After School Service for their children. Since October 2015 Resilience Care have come on board to take care of the day to day running of the service as they have the compliance (expertise and policies and procedures) required to run a professional service. Summer camps, Easter camps, Mid-term camps Halloween and Christmas camps are run. The majority of our children come from St Francis Special School Beaufort from where they are collected daily at 2.30 pm and brought here to Home from Home. One day a week 4 of our group are taken home to Bonane/Kenmare as they all come this long distance and they all attend on this day. We have the support of Kerry County Childcare, the HSE, Pobal and South Kerry Development Partnership without them we would not be able to stay open. The time spent by the children at Home from Home give the parents the rest assurance that their children are looked after. They get some welldeserved rest/respite and quality time with their other children. “ By having my son at Home from Home it gives families an opportunity to do activities that others may take for granted be that shopping, cooking, cleaning, assisting other siblings at homework etc. ”( parent statement) Can you help? We need your support, every year we try to better our services to ensure our children have everything they need to develop. Our future plans for the service are to install a lift to utilise all the building, to its maximise potential. There is also a plan to build a covered area in our back garden to be able to get out in all weathers. As our children are in school all day the extra time in the fresh air makes a welcome change. You can play your part by supporting our Golf Classic on May 26th.

Locals Underwhelmed By Redeveloped Plunkett Street

Comment

Words: Adam Moynihan

It took €300,000 and almost two months of work but many locals are thoroughly unimpressed with how the new-look Plunkett Street has turned out. The wider, contemporary style footpaths and special road surface are at the same level and were compared beforehand to the broadly popular Main Street design. Unfortunately, the redeveloped Plunkett Street certainly hasn’t ben greeted with the same universal acclaim. Perhaps the most common gripe thus far is that the footpaths look unclean and, perhaps more worryingly, cannot be properly cleaned. A representative from O’Leary’s electrical store, which is located on Plunkett Street, said he liked the

job but the staining of the pavements was “excessive”. “In my opinion, there wasn’t enough thought put into the paving that was put down,” he added. He also said that while he hadn’t personally experienced problems with surface water coming into his shop, some of the other traders on the street had mentioned it. The work began in February under the guidance of the Kerry County Council and the hugely important and iconic street was closed to traffic up until last week when it was officially re-opened. Considering the great cost and great inconvenience to locals and their businesses, the least the people of Killarney expected was an outcome that was pleas-

ing to the eye. In contrast to the clean, modern feel of the adjacent Main Street, where the footpaths and road compliment each other perfectly, the stained, pale grey sidewalks and much darker, almost black road surface on Plunkett Street seem to clash. In truth, it’s almost hard to believe that this is the finished product. It has the appearance of something that still needs work, and for a town that depends so heavily on its positive image, it’s surprising that something like this could have happened. Whatever about the aesthetics (which are, of course, objective), if the new layout has the potential to damage the premises of local businesspeople, changes may be necessary sooner rather than later.

Fox Sack Bill O’Reilly After Harassment Allegations Controversial American broadcaster Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to Fox News amid claims that as many as five women had been paid millions of dollars to keep quiet about harassment allegations. The brash presenter was due to return from his holidays earlier this week but when a number of major companies, including BMW of North America, Allstate Corp, French pharmaceuticals maker Sanofi SA and T Rowe Price, all pulled their advertis-

ing from his show, the writing was on the wall for O’Reilly. Speaking on Tuesday, O’Reilly’s lawyer claimed his client “has been subjected to a brutal campaign of character assassination that is unprecedented in post-McCarthyist America”. The O’Reilly Factor is the most watched programme on Fox News; at last count it averaged around four million viewers. The network, best-known for its conservative slant

and strong links to the Republican party, has continued to enjoy high ratings even as advertisers withrew their support and several allegations emerged that executives turned a blind eye to sexual misconduct there.

Comments From Troll Brolly Shouldn’t Be Taken Seriously

There was a great furore recently about remarks made by RTE’s Joe Brolly about Colm Cooper. Speaking on League Sunday, Brolly backed up claims he had made in his Independent column that Gooch, one of the most decorated footballers of all time, lacked the leadership qualities of someone like Peter Canavan. He also questioned Gooch’s performances against the northern teams, Tyrone in particular, before going on to state that while Gooch was a beautiful footballer, the media’s over-eulogising since his retirement was reminiscent of the death of Princess Diana. “I thought he had died,” Brolly quipped. Gooch has since responded to the notorious pundit’s criticism in typically understated fashion. Speaking on the Ryan Tubridy show, which was being hosted by Marty Morrissey, Cooper said: “I take Joe for what he is. He’s a very outspoken pundit. He likes to go against the grain sometimes just

Cooper: I take Joe for what he is. He’s a very outspoken pundit.

to create debate. “I certainly don’t lie awake at night thinking about what Joe is going to say about me. In the earlier part of my career he thought I was a fantastic player. In the latter years he has changed a little bit.” In truth, I was more surprised by the reaction to the Derryman’s comments than the comments themselves. For years now Brolly has made a reputation for himself by being provocative. Well-spoken and erudite, he is clearly RTE’s Gaelic football version of Eamon Dunphy. The only difference between the two is that we all cottoned on to Dunphy’s “controversial-for-the-sake-of-it” approach to punditry years ago. The reality is that much like the modern-day internet troll, Brolly and Dunphy simply say things to get a reaction. To my mind at least, they both jumped the shark a long time ago.

Gardai in Limerick are currently investigating a video which shows an Indian man being racially abused by an Irish woman on a train. The attack, which occurred between Limerick Colbert Station and Limerick Junction on Sunday, was captured on video by a fellow passenger and shared to Twitter. In the shocking footage, the woman can be heard to say: “**** off back to India. Don’t give me your guff, you ****ing cheeky p****. “Respect my ****ing country and get your bag off the seat.” The incident has gained international attention, especially in India where a large number of people have expressed their dismay on social media. In a statement, Iarnrod Eireann said: “It is a shocking and disgraceful incident – any form of abuse of customers is intolerable, particularly discriminatory abuse. “We have contacted the Gardai both in Limerick and in the Community, Diversity and Integration Unit in Harcourt Street, and have asked the customer to contact the Gardai also, particularly if they have any other footage. “The incident will have been deeply upsetting to those who were subject to abuse and those who witnessed it, and we are grateful to the customer who reported it to us and raised awareness of it.” Irish people have emigrated all over the world and we often like to think of ourselves as being open-minded and almost post-racial. Although too much shouldn’t be read into an isolated incident like this, it does perhaps suggest that, as a society, we’re not quite there yet.

UK Heading For Shock Snap Election In a widely unexpected statement delivered at Downing Street on Tuesday, British Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the UK government would be seeking to hold a general election on June 8. Generally speaking, British governments last for five years. David Cameron led May’s Conservative Party to victory as recently as

2015, so the next election wasn’t supposed to take place until May 2020. It’s clear that May, who took the reins when Cameron stepped down in the wake of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, is seeking a stronger mandate in Brexit talks. She had repeatedly stated that a snap election was not on the cards, so the decision comes as a major surprise to the opposition

parties. The Tories are extremely unlikely to lose the general election. According to numerous polls, the Labour could be heading for another crushing defeat. This will undoubtedly provide much needed support for May’s Brexit. If the UK public vote for the Conservative party, they’ll give May a mandate to carry out Brexit the way she sees fit.

The clerk of the course for the second year running, Anthony O’Connor, remarked: “This exposure is fantastic for Killarney and fantastic for the Rally of the Lakes. It hugely increases our attrac-

tion as an international event for competitors and spectators”. He added that the most famous classic stages will await participants and the demanding, technical and challenging route will require every competitor to perform to their full ability. Kieran Healy, business development manager, Killarney Advertiser, sponsor, said: “Since the first running of the Rally of the Lakes, the Killarney Advertiser has promoted the event locally.” He added: “We are pleased to be in a position to play a key role in shining a spotlight on the drama, excitement and fun of such a thrilling, world-class event and we look forward to our continued partnership with the Rally of the Lakes.” In excess of 120 entries have already been received in the various categories – with quality matching quantity – and entries are still being accepted online. The 2017 Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes will get underway with a ceremonial start in Killarney town centre at 7pm on Friday, April 28. The real action will commence early on the Saturday morning with the iconic Moll’s Gap stage, followed by the Tim Healy Pass and centralised service on Castletownbere Pier. Then the rally will head out on the famous stages of Cods Head and Ard-

groom with a repeat run over the Healy Pass and into service for a well-deserved break. Cods Head and Ardgroom are repeated and there will be a blast through the Kilmackillogue Harbour stage to finish off the day. Sunday morning’s action starts with Moll’s Gap once again, followed by service at the Liebherr Container Cranes base in Killarney. The crews will then complete a loop of three stages, Kilgobnet, Caragh Lake and Rockfield, before heading into service again at Liebherr. This loop is again repeated with plenty of spectator-friendly access points in Kilgobnet and Rockfield. The crews will arrive back to the finishing ramp at the Rally Headquarters in the Gleneagle Hotel at approximately 5.30pm for celebrations and champagne. The Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes will be counting rounds for the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship 2017 and the PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship. Killarney and District Motor Club is de-

lighted that Ireland’s leading vehicle history record company Cartell.ie will again be the main sponsor of the Rally of the Lakes for the eighth year. Other very loyal and generous sponsors include Cormac Casey of the Killarney Advertiser, Ordnance Survey Ireland and, of course, the Gleneagle Hotel, under the leadership of Patrick O’Donoghue, who have backed the Rally of the Lakes since 1979.

Kelly’s Eye On The Three-In-A-Row Kevin Eves from Donegal turning out fresh from his National victory in the West Cork Rally and he leads the Irish Tarmac Championship coming to Killarney. He will face stiff opposition from Eugene Meegan from Co Meath, last year’s National winner and one of the favourites for the title, while Galway National winner Gary Kiernan is also to be watched. The Cavan man is a previous two-time National winner and he has had a new engine fitted. A real treat for rally fans will be the flamboyant driving style of Barry ‘The Titan’ Meade from Kanturk, a member of the Killarney and District

The current Irish Tarmac Championship leader Alastair Fisher

THE excellent Donagh Kelly will be seeking to make it three Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes successes in a row when he returns to Killarney on the May Bank Holiday weekend but he won’t have it all his own way with no shortage of contenders lining up to snatch the title from him. Kelly was unbeatable in 2015, winning the national series, the premier Irish Tarmac Championship and the iconic Killarney event in his WRC Ford Focus, and while he took a break for much of last year, he ensured he returned to Killarney to retain his crown. The current Irish Tarmac Championship leader Alastair Fisher – nephew of the legendary Bertie – will be very much in contention in Killarney as will the Moffet brothers, Sam and Josh, who will be fighting for championship points as they currently stand in second and third position respectively. 2015 runner-up Robert Barrable will hit town in his unique Hyundai R5 – the only one of its kind in the country – and the Dublin car dealer is expected to show very well on this occasion. Roy White, a previous winner of the National category in Killarney, steps up to the International stage in his Ford Fiesta WRC and he is on record as saying he just loves the Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes stages. Joseph McGonigle, Brendan Cumiskey and Stephen Wright will also be pushing for glory as will rally royalty Aaron McHale in his Citroen DS3 RF. A battle royale of modified cars is in prospect in the National section with

Motor Club, who previously won the National title on two occasions while talented UK driver Phil Collins returns to Killarney and is always at the business end of the competitive National category. Over 30 local drivers will be in the field including Fergus O’Meara who will be giving his new Ford Fiesta its competitive debut, Charlie and Johnny Hickey fresh from their Southern 4 Champi-

Noel O’Sullivan will compete in his hometown rally for the 35th year – his 32nd year in his Ford Escort Mk2 – with his navigator Nicholas Burke taking part in his 25th International Rally of the Lakes. In the Historics section, Killarney regular Eugene Graham from London, who currently leads the championship in that category, will debut his all-new BMW M3 but he won’t have it all his own way with Barry Jones, currently second in the championship, Alan Watkins, Duncan Williams, David Goose and Keith McIvor all fancying their chances. The Junior rally in Killarney is regarded as the best event of its kind in the country with several previous winners

going on to achieve major success. They include top drivers Keith Cronin, Owen Murphy, Rob Duggan and Ross Forde who have all won the prestigious Billy Coleman Award. Exciting Juniors this year will include Glenflesk’s Kieran O’Donoghue – last year’s winner – and Kenmare’s Shane McCarthy fresh from his Junior win in the Circuit of Kerry. The top three in the Junior Championship, the dynamic Jenna McCann, Justin Ryan and John McCabe will all be battling it out in Killarney.

Upcoming Events: Friday, April 21: Roots Rock and Reggae with Bugsy and Eddie Saturday, April 22: Abigail Joffe – Album launch Tuesday, April 25: Drink and Draw Night with Debra

Abigail Joffe Album Launch Abigail Joffe will be launching her debut album ‘Lay Me Down’ in Courtney’s on Saturday, April 22 at 10pm. Abigail is an English born Dingle based singer/songwriter, the daughter of South African parents. In 1993 she swapped the rolling hills of Wiltshire for the wild Atlantic shores of Kerry. Her songwriting takes personal themes from her life on the Dingle Peninsula and transforms them into beguiling stories that touch the soul. The launch of Abigail’s debut album, ‘Lay Me Down’, will be a warm intimate evening of finely crafted songs that capture the essence of lyricists such as Elvis Costello and the power and purity of singers like Stevie Nicks.

The album has been described as “sensual, poetic and feminine” by Angelo Vaggi of Rolling Stone and Virgin Records. He also noted: “What makes this album so precious is the elegant beauty within each song, something that could be naturally found in the best tracks of Leonard Cohen. Abigail is absolutely one of the best voices of the moment.” From touring with her bad in Ireland and the UK to playing Other Voices and gigging in New Zealand, Abigail brings a powerful energy to her performances which audiences always passionately respond to. She recently graduated from Bath Spa University with a Masters in Songwriting.

Eyes On The Skies

Drones are increasing in popularity, notes electrical and automation engineer Kevin O’Connell

EVER since people looked skywards and believed they could fly in some manner or form, there has been a fascination between people and flight. Fast-forward to the 21st century and you will now see that drones capture and captivate young and old people’s attention like no other flying machine in the skies today. Drones are every increasing in popularity for those seeking the thrills and spills of highspeed flight on a budget. One such drone currently available on the market is the DJI Mavic Pro Drone. This device i s a marvel of aviation engineering, albeit in a compact form (H83mm x W83mm x L198mm, 743g).

In order to have eyes in the sky the drone is equipped with a front camera mounted on a three-axis gimbal. The camera has a 12MP still-shot camera resolution and 4k video resolution for all the budding videographers out there. The drone has rapid acceleration with a top speed of 65km/h, a flight distance of up to 7km and a flight time of 27 minutes. The drone has some very intelligent in built technology including an in-flight obstacle avoidance, follow me and return home system.

New Universal Contour Detoxing Wrap Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains how this special treatment improves skin tone and texture If you are looking for the perfect detoxifying treatment combined with total relaxation this is the treatment for you. It’s an ideal treatment prior to holidays, wedding and Sparta tanning. It’s actually a full body exfoliating treatment. The wrap begins using a luxurious sea salt and seaweed scrub. This deep exfoliation using heated mittens leaves the skin glowing. It allows the clay to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin which increases the overall detoxifying benefits. The scrub increases circulation, aiding the removal of cellulite and improves skin

tone as well as texture. Once the exfoliation is finished the classic clay solution is applied. The heated blanket helps to open the pores allowing the clay to be absorbed. Its aim is to remove excess toxins from our areas of concern. A relaxing head neck and shoulder massage is performed while the clay gets to work. The treatment is finished off with an application of our Rosemary and lime detoxifying massage oil. This is a blend of antioxidants that provides detoxification, anti-glycation and other benefits to the body leaving the skin smooth, soothed and well conditioned. Please contact Jill 0646632966 for more info.

‘Vaccinations Are A Wonderful Tool Of Preventive Medicine’ Words: Trevor O’Donoghue A RECENT news story reported that a mother in the UK was ordered by the high court to vaccinate her two children. The mother had objected on the grounds that she was vegan and had been raising her children as such and that the vaccine was introducing pollutants into their bodies. The children’s father appealed to the court to force the mother to agree to vaccinate the children and thankfully in this instance the court agreed. The has been a lot of talk in recent years about possible risks associated with vaccinations, in particular the autism risk associated with the MMR vaccine. The controversy surrounding this vaccination was generated by a paper published the esteemed medical journal The Lancet back in 1998 and by subsequent media reporting. In the paper, the author linked autism to the MMR vaccine. The media picked up the story and ran with it, and vaccination rates dropped. Unfortunately in the following years, rates of measles and mumps increased, with deaths of children occurring that were directly attributed to the lack of vaccinations. This included three deaths in Ireland in 2000. To add insult to injury, it later transpired that the initial paper in The Lancet was fraudulent. The author was found to have conflicts of interest in that he had applied

for patents for competing vaccines. The Lancet took the step of discrediting the paper and formally withdrawing it. In 2012, a Cochrane review on dozens of previously published studies of over 14 million children found no credible evidence of an involvement of MMR with autism. Likewise further reviews in 2014 did not find any link between MMR vaccinations and autism or autism spectrum

disorders. Yet to this day, there is a large anti-vaccination movement still convinced of the links and refusing to vaccinate their children. Not only does this put their own children at risk, but if the rate of vaccination uptake drops significantly, it can allow the diseases to gain footholds in the population, putting further lives at risk. Vaccinations are a wonderful tool of

preventive medicine that allows us as a society and indeed as a planet to take active steps to manage our health and eradicate disease. We managed to do it with smallpox and we have dramatically reduced the impacts of a number of diseases. It behoves us as individuals and as responsible parents to do our bit to help eliminate disease from our society to put the health of our children first.

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels

JOHN 20:19-31: ‘Peace be with you’ was the greeting of Jesus on meeting his frightened apostles. Who has come to you bringing peace at times when you were frightened? For whom have you been an agent of peace? Thomas, doubting and questioning, is possibly a person with whom we can identify. What part have doubting and questioning played on your faith journey? How has your faith been strengthened by such moments? Note the way Jesus dealt with Thomas. He did not give out because he doubted. He took him where he was and led him along to see the truth of his resurrection. Who has been that kind of a teacher for you, gently taking you where you were and leading you on to a deeper knowledge of some truth about life? For whom have you been that kind of teacher? ‘Blessed are they who have not seen and yet believed’. That requires great trust. Perhaps you have had the experience of being trusted without having had to prove every step along the way. What was it like to be trusted in that way? Who have you been able to trust in a similar manner? John Byrne, OSA, Veritas

Musings

JESUS reveals himself with his wounds: his whole body was clean, beautiful and full of light but the wounds were and are still there, and when the Lord comes at the end of the world, we will see his wounds. Before he could believe, Thomas wanted to place his fingers in the wounds. He was stubborn. But that was what the Lord wanted – a stubborn person to make us understand something greater.

Shalom

THE disciples in today’s Gospel must have been so excited to tell Thomas their news: ‘We have seen the Lord’. Sometimes, when we try to share something of our faith experience with others, we can meet similar responses – doubting, cynicism – we can even be made fun of. The Risen Jesus bears the wounds of his suffering and even invites Thomas to touch them, to get in touch with the reality of his suffering. We might recall times when we have been overwhelmed by pain but looking back on those times we can see that they sometimes brought us to a different place, to new life. Perhaps today recall those times of ‘wounded-ness’ – and hear Jesus’s ‘Peace be with you’, the promise that he is with you. The word ‘Peace’ (Shalom) is more than a wish for a good evening or peaceful day. It expresses the desire that the person receiving the blessing might be whole in body, mind and spirit. The Risen Jesus brings a peace that is life-giving. The disciples were locked away, afraid, closed off from the world. When Jesus is present with them, their hearts are opened again, they rejoice. The Risen Jesus in today’s Gospel moves the disciples from total fear and despair to ‘rejoicing’. The same Risen Jesus is active in all our lives and in the world around us. In the words of Margaret Silf: “Life will always prevail, through all the layers of death in which we try to contain it.” Jane Mellet, Veritas

Killarney Advertiser’s resident cartoonist Martin Carey gives his take on familiar faces and places

Grace Notes Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley says she has been living by this quote for the past couple of years

THIS quote has gotten me through many times of self doubt and it has stopped me from running away from what scares me. I have become the kind of person that tries to face my demons head on, even though I would love nothing more than to take the easy way out sometimes! I think artists have to face a very specific type of fear. This fear can turn a work of art into a meaningless object in the eyes of the creator. This fear is the fear of not being good enough. They say you can never love another until you truly love yourself and I think this is particularly true in the life of a person who creates for a living. I found that my frame of mind began to change

when I gave myself a break from the self-criticism. I then began to actually compliment myself for my achievements, whether they be big or small. Sometimes we deserve self-praise for even attempting something. It is a hard pill to swallow when we realise that we may not be at out strongest as we take on fear but we can only improve by facing it time and time again. In the past, fear was my foe and now fear is my biggest motivator. In my line of work I never know for sure where my next pay check is coming from, or if it will come at all, but I cannot let that type of fear stop me now. I have begun to have the same type of respect for myself that I would for a friend and so I must continue to show myself kindness. Be your own friend. Help yourself on your own journey through fear. •

Garden Magic Summer Is Almost Here Debby Looney has some advice on how to enjoy a year-round display of colour

When the weather is fine, we all have a tendency to think summer has arrived – I certainly fall victim to this! However, regardless of the fact that supermarkets and garden centres are stocking summer bedding, it is still too cold to plant these out... By all means plant up baskets, window boxes and pots, but do take them in at night. Dicentra spectabilis, now renamed as Lamprocapnos spectabilis is one of the garden beauties out at the moment. Also known as bleeding heart, its foliage is feathery and its arching pink flowers are so elegant. It grows very well in woodland plantings and shade. It is also one of the few perennials not affected by slugs! Geranium phaeum is also coming into its own now, dark purple markings on green foliage, coupled with burgundy flowers, it is one of the earliest geraniums to appear. Vinca minor is also a plant I would not be without. Blue flowers almost all year round atop green, or variegated foliage, it is a great spreader on banks and over drystone walls. Hostas are beginning to appear, and as they emerge it is a good time to divide them. Using a sharp spade cut cleanly through the existing clump and replant the new piece in ground mixed with some compost. Gladioli and lilies should be planted by now for a good show. Any winter flowering heathers should be cut back as they finish looking good, and preferably before they start growing again. There are some very nice varieties of spring heathers available at the moment, such as Callun vulgaris ‘Spring Torch’, ‘Kerstin’ and ‘Lemon Queen’, for example. The new shoots on these can vary from bright red or pink to pale yellow and cream. Interplanting heathers with conifers is a classic way to display both, using a pretty Picea such as ‘Daisy’s white’ or Juniper ‘Blue Star’ is very effective. You will have a year-round display of colour, with minimum work!

€20 Million In Funding Available For Rural Towns And Villages THE Government has announced €20 million in funding for rural towns and villages as part of the Action Plan for Rural Development. Leas-Chathaoirleach, Senator Paul Coghlan said this funding will bring tangible benefits to people and revitalise rural communities in Kerry. “The funding announced this week by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, is great news for rural Ireland and I strongly encourage Kerry County Council to apply. “The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is an initiative under the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development, Realising our Rural Potential, and is part of a package of national and local support measures

to rejuvenate rural towns and villages throughout Ireland.” The Scheme will be funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and administered by the Local Authorities. “Fine Gael in Government is using the resources created by our strong economy to deliver real benefits to people and communities all across the country. The Government’s new Action Plan for Rural Ireland contains over 270 targeted actions that will help to deliver these benefits to people here in Kerry. “Up to 300 towns and villages will benefit from funding under the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, which will be made available through Local Authorities over the next 15 months to support rural

regeneration. “The scheme is specifically targeted at rural towns and villages with populations of less than 10,000. Applications from towns can range from €20,000 to a maximum of €100,000. Funding of up to €200,000 will also be considered for a limited number of projects which can deliver exceptionally strong economic benefit to a town and its outlying areas. “A number of towns and villages across Kerry were badly affected by the recession of recent years and part of Fine Gael’s Action Plan will review planning legislation to allow the change of use of vacant commercial properties in rural towns and villages. I hope to see this having an impact in towns across the county.”

Europe To Force Car Makers To Fit Life-Saving Tech

Car-makers could be forced to introduce new mandatory safety equipment on all cars sold in Europe to slash road deaths to fewer than 15,000 by 2020. Currently, the death rate within Europe in 2015 was more than 26,000 having decreased from 35,360 in 2009 and 76,650 in 1990. The decline, says the European Commission, is due to the introduction of mandatory safety features like airbags and ABS. Now the Commission, which is responsible for proposing new laws in Europe, believe it’s time to shift the emphasis from reducing to avoiding an accident altogether. The European Commission has created a “wish list” that it hopes car manufacturers will make standard on its vehicles. If it doesn’t, it will make them mandatory.

Top of the list is autonomous emergency braking that automatically brakes if the car thinks you haven’t spotted a car in front braking hard. Also lane departure warning is to become standard on all cars sold within the Eurozone. Standard driver drowsiness and distracted driving detection is on the list even on the cheapest models within the next five years. Alcohol interlocks that require a breath test before you can drive your vehicle plus new crash tests to improve pedestrian survival rates with trucks and cars are other measures that safety experts want the Commission to introduce. Greater economies of scale could see the equipment standard on all the cars we buy, although the cost of all the new safety kit is likely to be passed on to consumers.

Ferrari On Top Again Ferrari has made its best start to a Formula 1 season for a decade, winning two of the first three races. Not since Michael Schumacher in 2004, the year of the great German’s record seventh world title, has one Ferrari driver done that. Vettel’s switch from Red Bull Racing to the Italian team at the time seemed to have been a mistake, but now it’s looking like a masterstroke. Last Sunday’s win in Bahrain has brought the challenge to Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, who have dominated the sport over the last three years. Ferrari’s early form this season is clearly showing that

they are back to their winning ways. The new owners of F1, Liberty Media set out their stall in wanting to make the sport more exciting. The revived battle at the front will most definitely do that.

Volkswagen Boosts Forecast Transit Goes As the saying goes, ‘there is no such thing a bad publicity’ and that is very true for the Volkswagen Group who have announced an extraordinary surge in revenues for the first quarter of 2017 as it looks to move on from the darkest days of the ‘Dieselgate’ exhaust emissions infamy in the US. The Group Operating Result of €4.4

billion for the first three months of 2017 was underscored by a contribution of €0.9 billion from the Volkswagen brand which enjoyed increased profitability in Europe. While the group’s interim report will be released on May 3, a statement from Volkswagen pointed to profit growth between six and seven per cent for the full 2017 sales year.

Automatic

Both Ford’s 130 PS and 170 PS Transits are now available with a new six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission as part of a number of updates to the Blue Oval’s range of workhorse vans. Both the current Transit and smaller Transit Custom vans were previously only available with a six-speed manual transmission; however, some front-wheel drive variants can now be optioned with a six-speed auto as well as a new, more efficient 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbo-diesel engine. This is designed to provide a smooth and relaxing driving experience, especially in busy stop-start traffic. The transmission allows you to change gear manually if you prefer, using the fascia-mounted gearshift. It also provides the ability to lock out gears in more challenging driving conditions, e.g. on slippery surfaces or steep gradients. The other rear-drive Transit models will continue to be available with only six-speed manual transmission and the existing 2.2-litre engine.

Trócaire Says Lenten Campaign More Important Than Ever TRÓCAIRE has thanked people from Kerry for supporting its 2017 Lenten campaign, which comes to an end this week. The organisation is reminding people that Trócaire boxes can be returned to parishes across the county. Schools, individuals and parishes from Kerry have been incredibly supportive of Trócaire this Lent, from taking Trócaire boxes into their homes to welcoming speakers from Trócaire to share information and stories about

the people and communities at the heart of the campaign. The Lenten campaign this year highlighted Trócaire’s humanitarian work with people who are facing grave threats from floods, droughts, other natural disasters and conflict. We can see from the current situation in Africa that this work is even more crucial now. Millions of people are facing starvation because of drought and conflict. Trócaire is working in Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya to try

Concern At Lack Of ‘Dedicated Obstetric Theatre’ I RECENTLY raised with the Minister for Health the concerning fact that University Hospital Kerry has no dedicated obstetric theatre for expectant mothers and their unborn babies. Tralee maternity ward is as busy as any maternity hospital in the country and it is not good enough that they do not have the equipment to be able to diagnose problems that can occur with the unborn child. I have been approached by several parents who have claimed that if this service was available to them during their pregnancy they would have been able to prepare themselves and other family members for arrival of their baby.

to save lives in the face of what the UN has described as the greatest humanitarian disaster since World War Two. This work, and work in many other developing countries, is only possible because of the generous donations made by people from across Ireland. In the reply from the HSE has been confirmed that the provision of a dedicated theatre forms part of a capital submission that has been finalised by UHK and is due for consideration by the South West Hospital group for approval and escalation to the acute hospital division and once approval is provided, this submission will then be escalated for consideration for funding. While this is all positive news, and I welcome it, it is vital that once approved that funding is provided and that the hospital is not left waiting for funding for years. University Closed But Hungarians Have A Right To Prevent Foreign Interference In response to Sean Kelly MEP’s letter (Concern at Closure of Central European University, Budapest - 14th April), and as somebody opposed to George Soros’ funding of Ireland’s pro-abortion lobby, I can understand why the Hungarian Government is opposed to the same imperialist source of foreign funding of Budapest’s very fine Central European University.

Only recently, as a result of objections to Ireland’s Standards in Public Office Commission of Soros’s political imperialist funding of the Abortion Rights Campaign, that organisation was forced to return the foreign money. Why should Hungarians not enjoy the same right to prevent foreign interference in their internal politics? Alan Whelan, Beaufort

I lost my life companion, A life linked to my own, Day by day I pray for you, As I walk this life alone.

When this should be your special day, With cards and presents too, There is nothing now but memories, And photographs of you. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

The house you left is lonely now, And I am lonely too, Those left behind are good and kind, But my heart still aches for you,

A birthday wish I send today, But not on a card the usual way, It’s written in gold on a cloud above, And sent to you with all my love.

With a broken heart I wish you, A happy birthday and Send you all my love.

Spa Dumped Out Of Intermediate Championship By Ruthless Desmonds Another premature championship exit is the last thing Spa needed, writes Adam Moynihan

For the second year in a row, Spa’s championship aspirations have been cut short in the month of April. The Killarney club have been desperate to reclaim the Intermediate title ever since their last triumph in 2009. They went on to win Munster that year and made it to Croke Park the following March where they ultimately lost out to Cookstown of Tyrone. They’ve made the final three times since then but came up short against Finuge (2012), Ardfert (2014) and St Mary’s (2015). To make matters worse, Ardfert and St Mary’s both went on to win All-Irelands. Last year they were expected to challenge once again but defeat in the second round to eventual winners Kenmare was a huge body blow. While promotion to Division 1 would have been great, the Intermediate was really the number one priority for Spa so to have that particular carrot taken away from the players so early in the campaign was devastating. The squad must have struggled to stay motivated for the remaining six or seven months of football, and the last thing they needed in 2017 was a repeat of that particular pattern. On Sunday they came up against Division 1 opposition in Castleisland. There were certainly handier draws out there but at home, and with the majority of their top players available, Spa would have fancied their chances against a team who have lost their first three games in the County League. Despite playing into a stiff breeze, the home side

started well and points from corner back David Spillane and wing forward Mike Foley gave them an early lead. Castleisland brought it back to two points apiece before Mike O’Donoghue kicked his first free of the day to make it 3-2. For Desmonds, half forward Kieran Brennan and corner forwards Colm Murphy and Thomas Hickey were beginning to look dangerous and with thirteen minutes on the clock, Brennan broke forward to net the game’s opening goal. This kick-started a period of dominance for Desmonds as they notched five of the next six points to open up a 1-7 to 0-4 lead with ten minutes left in the half.

Spa have been desperate to reclaim this title since 2009

Intermediate Championship (Round 1) Spa 1-12 Castleisland Desmonds 5-16

Spa looked very open during this spell and it seemed as though Castleisland, who had willing runners from the middle third, were liable to score every time the ball crossed the halfway line. Joe Shannon needed a response from his men and they got a lifeline five minutes before the break. Dara Moynihan picked out Mike O’Donoghue with an excellent long range pass and he squared

it to Evan Cronin who fired low beyond Stephen Bartlett in the Desmonds goal. This strike and unanswered points from O’Donoghue, Moynihan, Craig Hickey and Cronin had Spa ahead by one, but two stoppage time scores from Castleisland gave them a 1-9 to 1-8 lead going into the interval. The healthy home support would have been optimistic as the second period began but an early Cian O’Connor goal was big setback. The sides exchanged points thereafter and Spa trailed by four with 40 minutes played before a disastrous seven-minute spell swung the tie irreversibly in Castleisland’s favour. A well-taken goal by Tomás Lynch and two more from O’Connor opened up an unassailable twelvepoint lead, and the game was over as a contest with 13 minutes still to play. Some defeats are better than others but this was about as bad is gets for Spa, who only managed four points in the second half and didn’t score at all in the final quarter. With the amount of talent they have in their ranks – especially the excellent young players currently coming through – Spa should be doing a lot better than this. Spa scorers: Evan Cronin (1-3), Mike O’Donoghue (0-4f), Dara Moynihan (0-2), David Spillane (0-1), Michael Foley (0-1f) and Craig Hickey (0-1). Castleisland scorers: Cian O’Connor (3-1), Thomas Hickey (0-6, 0-3f), Kieran Brennan (1-2), Tomás Lynch (1-0), Colm Murphy (0-2), Pat Fitzgerald (0-2), Adam O’Donoghue (0-1) Maurice Hickey (0-1) and Brian Leonard (0-1).

Novice Championship Preliminary Round

Kerry had to yield to Galway in the All-Ireland U-21 football championship semi-final on Saturday last on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-11. Indeed the four point margin of victory did not flatter Galway who were in control from the very first minute when Dessie Conneely scored their opening goal. Kerry never recovered from that shock score and were playing catch-up with Galway for the remainder of the game. Kerry were 1-9 to 0-4 adrift at the interval and the gap could have been much wider when one considers all the wides Galway had. Kerry did fight back in the second half after a Matthew O’Sullivan goal, but Galway hit back with two points from their midfielder Matthew Flaherty. Galway dominated in all sectors especially at midfield where much was expected of Kerry. This meant that there was a

steady flow of play for the Tribesmen and the Kerry defence was under constant pressure. Ryan and Spillane scored points for Kerry to cut the deficit to three points but that was as good as it got for Kerry. They had to play the last 13 minutes with 14 men after midfielder Barry O’Sullivan was sent off for a second yellow card offence before Colin Brady scored Galway’s second goal. Jordan Kiely looked impressive when he came on for Kerry and scored a consolation goal for Kerry just before the end. This was very disappointing for Jack O’Connor and for a Kerry side of whom so much was expected. Remember how they overwhelmed Cork in the Munster final? I expected them to go all the way but they were well beaten. So too were Donegal so it is a Galway v Dublin final.

Kerry Under 17 Footballers in action on May 2nd

Kerry Under 17 footballers, who are under the same management as the minors, begin their season with a home game in Austin Stack Park Tralee on Tuesday May 2nd against Tipperary. Should Kerry win that game they will face the winners of the other semi final between Cork and Limerick and that would also be a home venue for Kerry. The Under 17 competition of course is a competition designed to give intercounty competition to a group of players who would otherwise have missed out on intercounty activity due to the lowering of the Minor age group to 17 from 2018.

Smalltalk

Killarney Legion forward Conor Keane talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, his favourite party piece and an embarrassing mix-up on the Kerry bench

Hi Conor. How’s the body?

Good, very good. Healthy anyway.

Are you in college or what are you doing?

I’m in college in Tralee but I’m on placement down in the Community College at the moment.

How’s that going?

Good. It’s nice down there.

Legion have made a great start to the County League. What’s the mood like in the camp?

Very good. We have three wins out of three. We won’t be getting ahead of ourselves – it’s only the County League – but we’re happy at the moment.

What are your goals for the rest of the year?

My own goals personally are to stay fit and try and win as many games as possible. Silverware is our main goal with Legion but we’ll take it game by game.

Who’s your best friend on the team? Billy McGuire.

Cute. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Denis Sheahan and that is a FACT.

That would be an absolute nightmare. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder?

We’ve a couple of guys who are good at the old Tinder. Well, I dunno if they’re good but they like it anyway. I’d have to go with Damien O’Sullivan at the moment. But if you want to talk about Plenty of Fish, I’d say Seán McCarthy.

What’s your proudest sporting moment? Obviously the first time playing with Kerry but also winning the Munster Minor Championship. I won it with a lot of friends so I was delighted with that one.

And the most embarrassing?

We were playing a McGrath Cup game this year and myself and Conor Geaney were both on the bench. Eamonn Fitzmaurice turned around and shouted: “Conor! Come on. You’re coming on.” So I got up… But then I saw Conor Geaney making his way down. I had to sit back down with everyone looking at me. It was very awkward!

If you had to compare yourself to an athlete from another sport, who would it be?

I’d like to say somebody like Anthony Joshua but that’d be a lie… Adam Lallana.

What are your five favourite sports in order?

Football, basketball, soccer, hurling and tennis.

Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I’d like to have a go at tennis.

What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Istanbul.

Who’s the biggest moaner?

Do you have any nicknames?

Who’s the worst-dressed?

Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without?

What type of stuff does he wear?

What’s your most-used emoji?

Who spends the most time in the gym?

I like that one myself. What’s the best show on TV?

Thomas Moriarty.

He’ll freak but my brother, Shaun.

Just Keano really. Nothing major.

Calorie Counter.

In fairness to him he’s gotten a lot better but he could pull out a pair of purple pants and a yellow t-shirt or something.

I’m stuck between Conor Culloty and Brian Doolan. The two boys like their gym, in fairness to them.

Conor is after getting big I heard.

Yeah. He loves looking in the mirror.

If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Legion this year, who would it be (besides me)? David Murphy.

As if his head wasn’t big enough! Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? James O’Donoghue. Hands down.

Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Michael Bernard O’Donoghue.

If you had to transfer to another Killarney club, who would it be?

This is the toughest one. There’s no winning here! I was thinking Fossa...

They’re on the up.

Yeah. I’d like to link up with someone like Kenneth Clifford.

The Undateables.

What’s your favourite song at the moment? Symphony by Clean Bandit. It’s lethal.

What would you sing at karaoke?

Living Next Door to Alice. I started singing it when I was about five and I would not leave parties until I sang it. I’d cry if I couldn’t!

Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Botty.

What would you have for your last meal? Shepherd’s pie.

Who would play you in a movie about your life? Channing Tatum I’d say…

And can you tell me a joke?

How do you make holy water? I don’t know. You boil the hell out of it!

Nice one Conor! Sound Adam!

Rugby News ...

Words: Liam Murphy

ANOTHER big weekend of rugby in the provincial and local scene. First up Thomond Park was the venue for the last of the interpro meetings of the season as Munster welcomed Ulster in the PRO12. A scrappy match saw Munster run out winners to book a play off slot, however at what cost? With Ronan O’Mahony picking up an ankle

knock and Darren Sweetnam going off injured, Rassie must be reciting decades of the rosary ahead of the European Cup Semi final against Saracens next Saturday. The injury list is pretty substantial, however, with over 38,000 Munster fans hitting the Aviva, a mouthwatering match is in store. Best of luck lads and to all those travelling up to the big smoke for the match, Enjoy! Last Sunday, our Killarney RFC seniors duly cemented their place in history by winning a second Trophy within a week! Following on from winning promotion to

Division 2 of the Munster Junior League, the club has witnessed the most prolific and successful spell in its history. This was only the stuff of dreams at the start of the season but all of the hard work and countless hours of training came to fruition for Ger Moynihan’s men last Sunday in blustery conditions at Crageens, (Castleisland RFC pitch). Division 2 side Tralee RFC provided the challenge and Killarney were looking to win the Galwey/Foley Cup for the first time since 2012. The second half provided the action as the men

Kerry Senior Hurlers Open Leinster Championship Campaign The Kerry senior hurlers will open their Leinster Senior Championship round robin series campaign on this Sunday, 23rd April, with an away trip to play Meath. Venue is Páirc Tailteann in Navan where there will be a 3.00p.m. throw in. Meath come in to this game as reigning Christy Ring Cup champions and as recent winners of the Allianz League, Division 2B (where they defeated Wicklow in the final

by 4 – 24 to 2 – 15). Kerry meanwhile have had some tough outings in the league, albeit competing at a far higher standard. In Round 2, Kerry play Westmeath at Cusack Park, Mullingar on Sunday, 30 April and in Round 3 they meet Laois at Austin Stack Park on Sunday, 14th May. The toptwo teams from the round-robin will progress to the Leinster quarter-finals against Offaly or Wexford on the weekend of 27/28 May. Full details at www.leinstergaa.ie

Kerry Minor Footballers Set Up Probable Meeting With Cork In Munster Semi Final Kerry eased their way to a probable Munster Minor Football Championship semi final showdown with Cork on May 10th following a decisive victory (2-16 to 1-6) over Clare before an attendance of 2,567 at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Wednesday evening last. There was never any likelihood that Clare would cause an upset at any stage, but the Kerry management will be far from happy with their side’s second half display when they shared the scoring with the Bannermen, squandering numerous scoring chances in the process. The team that did duty on Wednesday evening contained just four of the side who played in the All Ireland Minor Final last year – Michael Potts, Diarmuid O’Connor, Brian Friel and David Clifford - while the injured pair of Cian O’Callaghan and Cian Gammell along

with Niall Donohue, Fiachra Clifford, Chris O’Donoghue and Ryan O’Neill were all part of the extended training panel last year. Kerry, Cork and Limerick have qualified for the Munster semi finals, however, the exact semi final lineup will not be decided until the playoffs have been completed. While Kerry and Cork are on the same side of the draw, repeat pairings are not allowed and if Waterford were to defeat Clare and then defeat Tipperary in the playoffs for instance then the Deise county would be drawn against Cork or Kerry in the semi finals as they have already played Limerick! So, while everyone will be keeping an eye on Waterford’s progress - they are away to Clare on this Wednesday – the odds favour a Kerry V Cork winner takes all semi final on May 10th in Páirc Uí Rinn. The losers of that game will exit the competition as there is no back door at the semi final stage.

Vincent Linnane RIP Vincent Linnane, who passed away suddenly on Tuesday of last week, was the very popular groundsman in Austin Stack Park since 1989 and of course was even better known as the Kit-man for the Kerry Senior football team. Vince started off as Kit-man for the Kerry Minor hurlers in the early nineties and then moved to the Minor footballers in 1993 and his brief very soon expanded to include the Under 21 and Senior footballers – and he has been guardian of the green and gold jersies ever since. Eamonn Fitmaurice, paying him tribute probably summed up his contribution to Kerry GAA when he said: “He was a huge part of our setup. He has been an incredible servant to Kerry both in his role as caretaker of Austin Stack Park and as our Kitman. He took ferocious pride in his work and always wanted to make sure the players

in black and red scored two tries to win the match by 5 points and make history by winning the 3 in a row. Very well done to the lads and to Ger Moynihan who deputised as coach right across the season as well as Club Captain. As the champagne corks popped and the players looked forward to a well earned rest, Killarney RFC seniors have proven to be the most successful of the Kerry Clubs this season, and something which should not be overlooked in a county where GAA and Soccer successes are celebrated.

were happy and wanted for nothing. His attention to detail was incredible. He was the heart and soul of Austin Stack Park and loved working there”. As late as last Sunday week Vince was seen overjoyed in Croke Park after Kerry had defeated Dublin – in a way it was a very fitting send-off indeed. The esteem in which he was held was manifested in the huge number of players and administrators and GAA people from all over Kerry who turned up in Ballyduff on Friday evening for his removal and again on Saturday morning for his funeral service after which the cortege was fittingly led out through the village of Ballyduff by the Kerry GAA gear van . On behalf of all the Gaels of Kerry and beyond I send our deepest sympathy to Vince’s wife Noreen, and his large extended family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

The semi final lineup this Friday evening is as follows: Skellig Rangers/Valentia/Sneem/Derrynane V Moyvane/Tarbert and Asdee/Ballylongford V St Pats in Ballylongford @ 6:45

Englishman Byrne Claims Victory In Ras Mumhan Dillon Byrne of the VCUK Velochampion team was the overall winner of the Kerry Group Ras Mumhan which finished up after four stages of classic racing on the roads of Kerry last week. Byrne laid the foundations for overall victory on Saturday when he finished third on the stage from Listowel to Athea in Co. Limerick. Sunday’s stage, as far as he was concerned, was the cornerstone for outright victory when he finished eleventh. Most of the challengers slipped down the rankings because of the two mountain primes at Valentia Island and Coom an Easpaig. Byrne, who raced Pro Continental on the European Continent last season, now races on the UK circuit. He has been here in Ireland on a number

Club Championship Preview The Castleisland Mart Senior Club Championship kicks off this weekend with four mouth-watering fixtures taking place. It’s a repeat of last year’s Club Championship final in Lewis Road as All-Ireland champions Dr Crokes play host to Austin Stacks. Crokes will be out for revenge following their defeat in that particular decider; Stacks ran out 2-12 to 1-14 winners on the day. Stacks recovered from their opening day defeat to John Mitchel’s in the County League to beat Desmond’s in their last outing, while Crokes have managed to win both of their Division 1 games thus far. Elsewhere, Legion face a stern test as they welcome Dingle to Derreen. Legion have started the season well winning their first three games in Divi-

They’re currently unbeaten in the league, although they’ll be disappointed to have followed up on their victory over Kerins O’Rahilly’s with two draws against newly-promoted St Mary’s and Templenoe. Newcomers Kenmare will make the trip back to Strand Road to take on Kerins O’Rahilly’s. Kenmare have had a decent start to their Division 2 campaign, winning two games and drawing one. Rahilly’s, meanwhile, have a win, a draw and a defeat. Throw-in for these games is: Next Wednesday sees two East Kerry sides going head to head as Kilcummin play Rathmore in Rathbeg. Kilcummin will be hoping to bounce back from their recent defeat to Legion, while O’Dono-

ghue Cup specialists Rathmore are hungry for success at the county level. In the Intermediate Championship, Glenflesk are at home to Laune Rangers on Sunday at 2.30pm. Glenflesk had a narrow win over Brosna in the first round last Monday and will have to be at their best to get the better of Laune Rangers, who defeated Milltown/Castlemaine with six points to spare in their round one fixture. Fossa and Firies are both in action in the Junior Premier Championship this Sunday. Firies host Keel while Fossa make the long journey down to Dromid. Both games are scheduled for 2.30pm. In the Junior Championship, Listry are at home to Tarbert. Extra-time will be played in all games if necessary.

Killarney Athletic

Results U14 Inter Kenmare 2 Athletic 4 Only 5 minutes gone Athletic fell behind after some lacklustre defending a close range shot found the corner. Their second eventually came when their central midfielder carried the ball through the defender without being challenged & hit across the goal to find the net off the post. Minutes to go in the first half the breakthrough came. Osieba who was busy throughout, released Mulvanney over the top & he fired past the onrushing keeper to make it 2-1. Athletic needed something special & cometh the hour, cometh the man, as O’Sullivan, reintroduced to the game was found over the top by Rejuvcan & he made no mistake in slotting past the keeper when left one on one. With seven minutes to go this game looked destined for extra time but it was O’Sullivan again, using his pace after a great through ball by Alade, fired past the Kenmare no. 1 to make

it 2-3. Athletic shut up shop then and some excellent defending by the back four & goalkeeper left no way through. Then with two minutes to go Athletic got in for the sucker punch again after great defensive work, Mulvanney found himself in down the right, he beat the full back & pulled it back to Alade at the edge of the box who’s shot rifled into the top corner to seal a man of the match performance. U16 League Killarney Athletic 3-0 Inter Kenmare Unfortunately, this was a walkover to Athletic from Kenmare. Not the way we want to gain the 3 points and we wish Kenmare the best. This result puts the boys in blue top of the league on 19 points from 7 games. They are now 2 points ahead of Camp with a game in hand but it is all to play for when Camp are the visitors to Ferndale in the near future. 3 “cup finals” to be played and a good attendance at training and matches is required.

Men’s Club Club Captain Declan McCarthy has finalized arrangements for his forthcoming Charity Day on Sunday the 30th of April, The beneficiaries of the fundraising day will be the Chemotherapy Day Unit at University Hospital Kerry in Tralee, and The Irish Kidney Association. The time-sheet will be in operation from 7.30 A.M. on the morning and the last tee-time has been scheduled for 3.30 that afternoon, the entry sheet is at the reception at the Club, so be sure to get your team in as early as possible in order to ensure that you can get the time that you wish to secure on behalf of your team. Teams of 4 persons will cost €120, and the presentation of the prizes is scheduled for 8.30 P.M. That evening in the Clubhouse. Declan has introduced a new innovation this year, and it is proving quite popular already, that is, should you wish you could sponsor either, or both, a Tee-Box and/or a Green at a cost of €100.00 each, and should you wish to do so, then please contact Declan himself direct, or any member of the Men’s Club Committee, alternatively just ring the Club and leave your name and preference, and the message will be relayed on to Declan. Declan, is requesting as much support as possible, in order that he will be in a position to make substantial donations to these two most deserving Charities, and this will be the only occasion during Declan’s year as Captain where he is asking us all for our generous support, which will be very much appreciated, both by Declan and the Charities involved. The competition on Sunday the 16th April was the Aghadoe Heights Hotel sponsored Club Championship, Singles Stableford Qualifier, played on Mahony’s Point. The winner with a fantastic score of 43 points was Bernard Carey, but what was even more remarkable was that in order to achieve 1st place, Bernard had a “Hole-in- One” at the 18th Hole, and having checked with

21.04.17 some of our longest serving members, this was the very first occasion that such a feat was achieved, well done and our congratulations to Bernard. In second place with an equally fantastic score of 43 points was the luckless John O’Shea (Muckross) who lost out to Bernard on the better back 9 hole score system. Full results are as follows. 1st, Bernard Carey(12)43 points, 2nd, John O’Shea Muckross(11) 43 points, 3rd, Alan Macsweeney(9) 41 points, 4th Daniel Doona(10) 41 points 5th Ian Cronin(6) 39 points, Category 1 Eugene O’Sullivan(4) 39 points, category 2 Mike Howard(9) 39 points, Category 3, Ian Prendergast(13) 37 points, category 4, Pat Buckley(20) 39 points. CSS on the day was 36 points. The draw for the singles matchplay stages took place last evening, and the draw has thrown up some very interesting pairings as usual, one such battle of the long-hitters will be between Captain Declan, and Gerard Moroney, another will be the clash between Ex-Officio Captain, Liam Hartnett and his nephew Robert Cussen, this could indeed be a most interesting encounter.

Killarney Camogie Club

A huge congratulations to 5 of our girls who played for the Kerry U14’s Camogie team on Saturday in Limerick last Saturday. Laura Healy, Cliona Lynch, Ilona Sheahan, Geraldine Murphy, Lisa Lenihan and Keelyn O’Leary all got

to play in 3 games in an inter-county blitz. The girls really enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to their next outing in their County colours. We’ll done girls. Our U14’s played against Causeway in a Feile qualifier last Tuesday. In a real show of strength, Causeway came with a large squad and some real quality players on their team. Killarney struggled with the pace and skill on display in the first half. The team was rusty and showing it was our first game of the season. After a good team talk at half time, Killarney went out and showed some real heart and determination I’m the second half. The girls got stuck in and fought as hard as they could. Causeway won’t comfortably in the end with a great display of skill and team play. We wish their girls the best of luck in Feile this summer. Training will resume on Monday after the Eastern break for all age groups. We always welcome in new members. If your daughter would like to learn a new game with unique skills, we train at Crokes pitch at 6.10 every Monday. Hurls and helmet are provided.

Killarney Celtic

U11 Success in Kilkenny Tournament Killarney Celtic took two U11 teams up top Kilkenny United FC last weekend to participate in a Tournament that included teams from Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, and prestigious teams like Bohemians, Killavula, and Cloughbawn. Both Celtic Green and White teams came through their groups unbeaten and actually went on to meet in the Final, with Killarney Celtic Green beating White. This was a very well-organised tournament and very well-run, with both teams getting six games and every player getting plenty of game-time. Our young players had great fun on the day, with special thanks to the wonderful local hospitality. A big thank you to all the parents and volunteers who travelled on the day. FAI Senior Cup

Killarney RFC

Seniors: The past few weeks have been without a doubt, the most successful period in the history of the club. Two weeks ago the lads won the J1 Munster Junior League, Division 3 Play off, winning a much coveted promotion to Division 2, beating Killorglin for the third time this season (the only club to do so). Last Sunday week the lads won the elusive Martin O’Sullivan Cup, beating Tipperary side Fethard & District. Then to really make history, last Sunday the lads won the ‘3-in-a-row’ beatng Tralee RFC to win the Galway/Foley Cup for the first time since 2012. This fantastic run of success has been a testament to the hard work and commitment of all of Captain Ger Moynihan’s men. A very special mention must go to Ger who doubled as Head Coach across the season as well as playing as Flanker or Hooker as required. His unerring commitment and hard work built on the work of recent years and brought the seniors to the next level. As well as this veterans such as prop Peter Kelly and out-half Paul O’Sullivan undoubtedly played some of the best rugby of their careers this season. The dirty word retirement gets mentioned but these lads have more in the tank! To be honest the pack has been unmatched over the past few months with stalwarts Alan Mulligan, Ollie O’Neill and Connie O’Leary leading from the front, while Out half Paudie Sheahan was the picture of calm over the ball. With young blood like Mike Sheahan, and Kareem Quasim and

21.04.17 many more youngsters pushing for spots, things are truly looking up for our Seniors. Yesterday’s game was a slow one to start and the first half was pretty slow to get going by recent standards, however youngster Patrick Courtney crossed the line for Killarney’s first Try. With Mike Sheahan kicking for his brother Paudie who picked up a knock, the conversion was missed, only just. However when James Allman crossed the whitewash in the second half for a fantastic try, Mike converted with a cracking kick against the wind. In the end, Killarney ran out winners by 5 points in a 15 - 10 scoreline, well deserved winners on the day and sealing their place in history. It was fantastic to see the team pose with their youngest fans and the Cup. The past season will go down in history as the season where despite the odds, and from a shaky start, the men in Black and Red stood up and were counted! Very well done to Ger Moynihan and all the lads who contributed across the season. The hard work has paid off. Onwards and upwards from here. Video Race Night: Killarney RFC are holding a fundraising Video Race Night at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Friday the 28th of April. You are invited to come along and have a great night. We would ask people to buy a horse for a race at only €10 or you can sponsor a race and name the race yourself for €100. We will have tote betting and DJ music on the night and great fun is guaranteed. If anyone would like to sponsor a race please contact Paul Murphy on 087-3745351. So, why not come along, support your club and back a winner!

Seniors The seniors played Ballymac in the first round of the Junior Championship on Sunday, it was an entertaining game with some good scores by both sides. Two first half goals from David Clifford , who was making his debut for the senior team, had Fossa leading at half time, 2-08 to 1-06. The second half was a much tighter affair with scores hard to come by but Fossa were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute of the half which Paudie Clifford converted to leave Fossa winners on a scoreline of 3-12 to 1-09. We are drawn away to Dromid in the next round of the championship and as of yet there is no fixture made, keep an eye on Facebook or Twitter for an update on when this will be made. U14 Boys The final score in this tough fought game was St.Michaels/Foilmore 5-13 Spa 2-6. Intermediate Championship Spa 1-12 Castleisland Desmonds 5-16 A disappointing result for our seniors on Sunday as they were outplayed by a strong Desmonds side. Despite trailing by 1-7 to 0-4 early in the game they came back well to put just a point between the sides by half time 1-8 to 1-9. Four second half goals by Desmonds however finished our championship hopes for 2017. Spa: James Devane, Eoin Fitzgerald, Matthew Moynihan, David Spillane (0-1), Michael McCarthy, Dan O’Donoghue, Eoin Cronin, Andrew Garnett, Liam Kearney, Dara Moynihan (0-2), Ciaran Spillane, Michael Foley (0-1f), Michael O’Donoghue (0-4f), Craig Hickey (0-1), Evan Cronin (1-3). Played their back game away to Laune Rangers and lost in a nail biting finish. Started and played with 11 players but ended with the opposition playing their full compliment. Dr Crokes Club

Under 12 Girls The U12 ladies travelled to Waterville for their second game of the preliminary round on Wednesday 12th of April. Captained on the night by Selina Thawiset, the team took some time to get into their stride. Despite a monster display from midfield by Laura O’Shea (2 points), and heroic goal keeping by Amy Clifford, Crokes found themselves defending for long periods of the first half. Ali O’Donoghue, Cara O’Sullivan and Ester Greene had numerous blockdowns

and interceptions which helped the cause. Halftime saw a number of positional switches in the hope of clawing back the lead the home team had built up. The moves paid great dividends. Katie McCarthy(0-1), Teagan O ‘ Sullivan(0-1) and Sarah Cooper(0-1) all impressed as did Ella Bartlett, Alica Keane, Kiera Geaney, Sinead Byrne and Sinead Oliver. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t enough on the night and Southern Gaels ran out winners. Many thanks to Cara’s cousin Aoife Dennhy who travelled from Australia and all the parents who cheered the girls on during the game. That’s why their singing wasn’t great on the bus home!! Congratulations Congratulations to the Kerry Senior Football team captained by Fionn Fitzgerald on winning the National League. Fionn played a major role in Dublin’s defeat. Mid Kerry GAA

Mid Kerry U-13 U-Can Club Skills Competition Winners U-13 U Can Club skills competition took place in Beaufort GAA grounds last Thursday Evening. This is a Clubs skills event, with 3 in each Team taking part. All Clubs in the Division took part, with the Winners coming from Milltown Castlemaine Team made up of Declan O Connor, Shane O Connor and Conor Spillane. Individual Top Scorer went to Shane O Connor Milltown Castlemaine. Milltown Castlemaine go on to The County UCan Skills Final next Thursday Evening 20th April in Austin Stacks Park at 5.30pm and the very best of Luck to them. Congratulations to the winners and to all Teams who took part on the night. This skills Test is a vital part of a players progression and really helps to develop both sides left and right leg and hand coordination, and is a very good Benchmark to see if they are working and practicing the skills of the game in both club training and on there own. I would advice all clubs to run this at least 3 times a year, in April, again in June, and last one in September and you should really see a vast improvement in all aspects of the game.
