Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Calls For ‘No Fly’ Zone

Over Killarney National Park To Be Strictly Enforced

THE urgent hum of whirring chopper blades became the soundtrack to the day on Sunday. At first we gazed at the skies bemused as from morning onwards, a helicopter proceeded to complete circuits over the town and its environs. No matter where I was, from the grounds of Killarney House to Aghadoe that evening, the tours seemed to continue incessantly throughout the day – and at times, if you closed your

eyes, it wasn’t too far a stretch of the imagination to feel like an extra on the set of a war movie. Following enquiries made on foot of complaints of helicopter tours over Killarney National Park, the National Parks & Wildlife Service has clarified that a “no fly” zone is in operation over the Park which is enforced by the Irish Aviation Authority. When contacted by Killarney Advertiser, Pat Dawson, NPWS, stated: “There is

Lazy Litter Louts Can’t Be Bothered To Use Bottle Banks

KILLARNEY is a town that is well served by municipal staff and volunteers who work hard to maintain its pristine image. But there are always a few spoilsports whose attitude flies in the face of the ethos of such dedicated organisations as Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns. Some people, it appears, bring their bottles and cans to bottle banks, only to dump them on the ground beside the banks. Dismayed at the sight of such litter strewn around the bottle bank at the High Street car park this week, a reader said: “We live in a beautiful clean town with a fantastic Tidy Towns committee. But there is always one to ruin everything.” After paying a visit to the bottle bank

on High Street this week she was confronted by the disgraceful scene pictured. “At first I thought all bins were full but to my horror all bins were empty. It’s just not nice, especially when so many work hard to keep Killarney tidy,” she added. When we posted a story online it sparked much debate and some pointed out that perhaps when the bottle banks are full, people leave their rubbish beside them. Even if this were the case, how lazy and ignorant is such behaviour? Surely it is not too much to ask that the person take them home again until the bottle banks are empty? Just last week, Killarney Advertiser reported on how litter louts are also leaving rubbish at Aghadoe Graveyard, much to the distress of people visiting the graves of loved ones.

a ‘no fly’ zone over the Park. “We have made a formal complaint to the Irish Aviation Authority in relation to the helicopter flights last weekend. The Irish Aviation Authority is following up on our complaint with the operators of the flights.” Kerry TD Martin Ferris noted that operators of such flights should take heed. “I welcome the clarification from the National Parks & Wildlife Service that there is a ‘no fly’ zone over the entire

National Park, this needs to be relayed to the operators of these flights so that there can be no confusion or a repeat of what happened this past weekend,” he said. “While it must be a wonderful way to view the Park, it is not appropriate and is insensitive to the peaceful and tranquil setting of the Park,” he added. “It is there to be enjoyed by everyone with the least possible impact on the environment of the area.”

Mountain Heroes On Top Of The World As Mayor Honours Them With Civic Reception

THEY put their lives on the line every time they respond to a call and it was only fitting that the dedicated volunteers that comprise Kerry Mountain Rescue Team received the highest honour our local authority can bestow. Founded in 1966 after a spate of accidents on Carrantuohill, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team comprises 35 members who took a bow on Monday as Kerry County Council afforded the team a civic reception. Leading tributes at the event was Kerry’s mayor Councillor John Sheahan who lauded the team for its contribution to the so-

cial and recreational life of Kerry. During the reception, at County Buildings in Tralee, KMRT chairman Jimmy Laide expressed his gratitude to the council for the honour and thanked all who had donated funs to the team over the years. Colm Burke, assistant PRO, KMRT, told how the organisation was formed following the death of two climbers on the Reeks 51 years ago. “KMRT has really developed since that time and over the years the training and equipment has really progressed,” said Colm.

Court awards €15m in damages to Killarney boy

‘How Can We Prevent This Happening To Any Other Child?’

THE mother of an eight-year-old boy, who has been awarded a €15 million settlement after being brain-damaged at birth, has criticised the HSE for taking eight years to admit liability in the case. The High Court on Tuesday approved the settlement for Jack Leane, of Lawlor’s Cross, Killarney, over injuries that allegedly happened as a result of medical negligence. Jack, through his mother, Annette

Leane, sued consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Barbara Kerkhoff, of Cork University Hospital, and the HSE over his care and treatment before and during his birth at the hospital on August 11, 2008, reports the Irish Times. Liability was admitted in February last year and the settlement was against the HSE, added the report. Jack has cerebral palsy, is wheelchair-bound and needs to be fed through a tube as well as orally. His inju-

ries left him with epilepsy, which causes him daily seizures, and he also has visual and cognitive impairment. An apology read in court on behalf of the hospital stated: “We do not underestimate the impact this has had on you and you and your family and we are truly sorry.” In a statement afterwards, Ms Leane said that what happened to Jack should never have occurred. She said she wanted to draw attention

to the fact it took the HSE eight years to admit liability. “The stress and cost of this action is a huge strain that not all families can sustain or even afford to start to investigate,” she said. Ms Leane said the financial settlement would give the family peace of mind and provide for Jack’s future. But she said the focus should not be on the size of the award but on asking “that someone look and ask how can we prevent this happening to any other baby”.

Mystery Shoppers To Show They Mean Business A TROOP of mystery shoppers will be visiting Killarney businesses in coming days. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce’s Retail Action Group this week launched the inaugural Retailer of the Year initiative in town. Sponsored by AIB, it will see applications sent to Killarney retailers, with an

independent mystery shopping service assessing each shop participating in the competition. The external look of the shop, general housekeeping, staff presentation and first impressions will be assessed. The results will be announced at a gala evening for retailers organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce.

Accident

Family Of Injured Jockey Thank Medical & Racecourse Team For ‘Superb Work’ YOUNG jockey Ana O’Brien sustained serious injuries after a fall at Killarney on Tuesday evening, but doctors believe she will make a full recovery in “three to four months”. Fortunately a team of medical experts, including volunteers, was on hand and Ana was quickly attended to after her mount Druid’s Cross slipped up after two furlongs in the second race on the card. The injured jockey was taken by the Irish Coastguard air ambulance to Cork University Hospital. Over 12 members of Killarney’s Order of Malta were at the scene and they along with the racecourse doctors, a veterinary team, Val O’Connell, clerk of the

course, racecourse team and air medical crew and staff at CUH came in for praise from Ana’s family. The 21-year-old suffered a fractured C1 vertebra in her neck and T6 in her back. Irish Turf Club chief medical officer Dr Adrian McGoldrick was one of the doctors who attended O’Brien, along with Killarney Order of Malta, and the HSE ambulance team. Dr McGoldrick told Press Association Sport: “Ana’s brain scan is clear. She has a fractured C1 vertebra in her neck and T6 in her back.” On Wednesday it was confirmed that the jockey, who also suffered fractured cheekbones, does not require surgery on her fractured

vertebrae in her neck and back. Dr McGoldrick expects her to be out of action for three to four months. Ana is the daughter of renowned trainer Aidan O’Brien and rode her first winner on board her father’s Fairylike at Dundalk in February 2013. Her family thanked the team who attended the injured jockey. Dr McGoldrick added: “Aidan and AnneMarie (O’Brien) would like to thank the superb work provided to Ana by the Order Of Malta, racecourse doctors, veterinary team and ground staff led by Val O’Connell (clerk of the course). Also the air medical crew and the amazing staff at CUH.” The three-year-old Druid’s Cross, trained by Ana’s brother Joseph O’Brien, was fatally injured in the incident.

Beach Wheelchairs Now

Available At Two Kerry Beaches ITT Reappoints President THE Institute of Technology Tralee has announced the re-appointment of Dr Oliver Murphy as President for another five-year term. The chairperson of the Governing Body, Mr Lionel Alexander, extended his congratulations to Oliver on his appointment and stated: “The Institute is embarking on some key strategic priorities that will be critical to its success at a regional, national and global level. I look forward to working closely with Oliver, the executive team, and the Governing Body to ensure that we deliver on these priorities.”

HANNA O’SULLIVAN was one of the first to test-drive the brandnew wheelchairs now available at two Kerry beaches. Hanna, accompanied by her mother Kathleen and sister Teresa, was a guest of honour at Ballinskelligs Beach where the beach wheelchairs were unveiled on Monday. Kerry County Council has made the specially adapted wheelchairs available for wheelchair users and people with disabilities at two Kerry beaches, Ballinskelligs and Inch, this summer. The Hippocampe wheelchairs are designed to make it easier for beach users with a disability or mobility restrictions to access and enjoy local beaches.

With the support of funding from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, two wheelchairs have been purchased. A third will shortly be made available at Ballyheigue Beach. The wheelchairs are designed for ease of movement on uneven ground and soft sand. Due to their balloon wheels, they cannot be self-propelled; therefore, all users will be required to bring someone with them to assist with transfer and pushing. The service is free of charge, but it is essential to book in advance. They can be booked in slots of up to three hours and users will be asked to complete a booking form and present a valid photo ID.

The director of Services with Kerry County Council, John Breen, said the wheelchairs have the approval and support of the Irish Wheelchair Association, Enable Ireland and the Disability Federation of Ireland. Cllr Terry O’Brien, Service Coordinator with the Irish Wheelchair Association, said he hoped more would be available at Kerry breaches in the years ahead. “A regular wheelchair would get stuck in the sand but these chairs are very ease to move and to manoeuvre on the sand,” he said. The chairs are available through July and August from noon to 7pm, Monday to Friday, and from 11am to 7pm at weekends. To make a booking for Ballinskelligs, contact 087-296 5874 or for Inch, call 086-266 3186.

Applause Rings Out For INEC Team THE team at the INEC Killarney was at the other side of the footlights this week as the venue was shortlisted for a prestigious award. The INEC is in the running for the Best Purpose Built Event Venue prize in the Event Industry Awards, beating off stiff competition this year to bag a spot in the shortlist which includes Aviva Stadium, Croke Park Meetings & Events, Guinness Storehouse, The Helix and Thomond Park Stadium. The award goes to the Best Purpose Built Event Venue that takes a spectacular event space and marries it with a great team – front of house, catering and support – to deliver outstanding results on a regular basis. art technical capabilities enable it to regularly host a selection of large scale theatre and musical productions combined with a highly adaptable seating capacity allows it to cater for an intimate audience of 200 people to an atmospheric 4,142 people. Liebherr Invests In Expanded Apprentice Training Facility

A STATE-OF-THE-ART apprentice training facility has opened at Liebherr Container Cranes, Killarney. As part of a continued investment in people and technology, Liebherr has invested over €250,000 in the expansion and upgrading of its apprentice training facilities. The investment will facilitate the introduction of a new programme in metal fabrication and welding which Liebherr launched this year, under the guidance of apprentice instructor Seán Dorris. Liebherr Container Cranes has been manufacturing cranes in its Killarney plant since it was estab-

lished in 1958 with the first group of apprentices starting their apprenticeship in 1959. In a ceremony on July 10 at Liebherr Container Cranes, the apprentices, management and directors of Liebherr officially opened an expanded apprentice training facility. The ceremony was attended by stakeholders from industry partners – IT Tralee, Kerry Cork and Limerick ETB Training Centres and Solas. Apprenticeships are a vital component of Liebherr’s business strategy and this is reflected with this significant investment. The new facility hosts 10 welding cubicles with 20 welding machines

Driving Tests

along with state-of-the-art production equipment such as a 90 tonne press brake, a 30 kilowatt guillotine, a multi-function 60 tonne iron worker, a semi-automatic bandsaw, a section rolls, a section profiler, pillar drill and tube notcher. Liebherr are currently educating 77 apprentices in three different disciplines: mechanical automation and maintenance fitter (MAMF), electricians and the newly introduced programme in metal fabrication and welding. Since the first apprentices passed through the Liebherr gate in 1959, over 1000 apprentices have been trained and qualified in Killarney.

Apprenticeships at Liebherr

LIEBHERR’S traditional apprenticeship scheme has been reformed significantly in recent years to cater for the increasing technical complexities of its products which demands the highest level of skills in all areas. The new programme includes a partnership with IT Tralee allowing young ambitious trainees to attain third-level qualifications in engineering up to and including an honours degree. The prized qualifications allowing an “earn and learn” approach are highly sought after and attract hundreds of applicants each year. The new facility is the latest investment in apprentice training and the investment almost doubles in size the existing apprentice training school in Liebherr Container Cranes. The tradition of both a practical and theoretical education is synonymous with Liebherr. Many of the senior positions currently in the company are held by personnel who started their careers as apprentices including the technical director Charlie McCarthy.

Kerry Drivers Face Business Opportunity ‘Scandalous’ Wait For Driving Test THERE has been a call for the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to intervene to reduce waiting times for Kerry drivers in line for a driving test. Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil has said that people are waiting inordinate amounts of time to access a driving test, and called on the Department of Transport and the Road Safety Authority to step in to deliver a speedier and more efficient service. The RSA, the national body charged with administering the driving test, states that the average wait time for a test at the Tralee centre is 13.6 weeks. “However, this has been disputed by members of staff working in the centre who claim that the average wait time is now in excess of 27 weeks – well over six months,” said Deputy Brassil. “This is a scandalous amount of time to be waiting just to get

a driving test. This is affecting those who are paying crazy insurance prices, and who, if they pass their test, should see a reduction in their premiums. “Even those who decide to go on the list for cancellations are being forced to wait up to 26 weeks – meaning that there is no hope of getting an ad hoc appointment quickly.” Kerry is faring worse than most parts of the country, with certain counties having wait times of just 16 weeks. “The Department of Transport must step in and direct the RSA to increase the number of testers operating in the Tralee Test Centre to bring down the average waiting time,” said Deputy Brassil. “I firmly believe that no one should be waiting longer than 12 weeks to secure a test time. It’s unfair and costing motorists with increased premiums.”

What’s difference between Shouldthe I Stay or Should I Go? Savings, Investments & Pensions? Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Adviser, Eoin Liston, Premier Financial Services, discusses the difference between savings, investments and pensions. * Savings are low risk funds that must be liquid (available) when you need them. The purpose of saving money is so you can have it for a specific purpose within a short time frame. * Investments, on the other hand, are for wealth building, and will not be needed for many years. Yes, investments do involve greater risk, but, investments also yield much greater returns when left alone long enough to ride out the turbulence of the stock market. * A pension plan is a long-term savings plan, where regular amounts and / or once-off lump sums are built up into a fund for retirement.

www.medorblinds.com

Savings, Investments & Pensions can mean different things to different people

However, there is one phrase that should help you differentiate these terms - Time Horizon - which is the length of time over which an investment is made or held before it is liquidated. Time Horizons can range from seconds, in the case of a day trader, all the way up to decades for an individual who is investing in a retirement plan. EXAMPLE OF TIME HORIZONS Savings: 1-3 Years Investments:5-15 Years Pensions:10-30 Years depending on age.

Each person’s Time Horizon will be different depending on their own personal circumstances and goals.

Typical Characteristics of Short-Term Investments Low Risk: Risk is mitigated over longer periods of time. With short-term investments, we don’t have that kind of time. Therefore preservation of capital in short term investments is paramount. High Liquidity: Liquidity is the ability to quickly convert assets into cash while simultaneously preserving value. This is the also the primary goal of short term investments. Low Return: Low risk, high liquidity investments tend to have lower returns. On average inflation is somewhere around 2-3% a year, Some short term investments have returns lower than inflation, subsequently reducing the spending power of assets over time.

Typical Characteristics of Long-Term Investments High Risk: When it comes to some high risk investments (i.e. stocks), time has a way of neutralizing risk. This is why in 2008 some stock market investors were down over 35% while historically the stock market returns approximately 8-10% annually. It is acceptable for longterm investments to be high risk because over time probabilities determine performance. Low Liquidity: Liquidity is the ability to quickly convert assets into cash without losing value. Some longer term investments are subject to liquidity risk. High Return: When you’re willing to accept more risk and give up liquidity, your returns will generally be higher.

A BRAND-NEW behind-the-scenes teaser video for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has just been released – complete with action shots and outtakes, as well as some stunning footage of Kerry and our very own Wild Atlantic Way. The trailer was released on Saturday at Disney’s latest D3 convention in Anaheim, California. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke box office records around the world in late 2015, bringing the magnificent scenery of Skellig Michael and the South West to the attention of millions of people everywhere. “The fact that Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, due for release this December, was also shot on location along the Wild Atlantic Way is another fantastic coup for Irish tourism – and we’re absolutely delighted that Ireland features again in this behind-the-scenes teaser video of the eighth movie.” The director of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, returned to Skellig Michael with his cast in September 2015, picking up the story from the iconic moment in Episode VII, when Rey found Luke Skywalker on the stony steps of Skellig Michael. The location scouts were so taken with the Wild Atlantic Way that they came back for a second shoot in May 2016. Locations along the western seaboard (in counties Cork, Kerry, Clare and Donegal) were handpicked to represent the planet Ahch-to in Episode VIII – due to hit the big screen on December 15. ‘Bloodsuckers’ Bring Back Memories Trevor O’Donoghue examines the clover mite or Bryobia praetiosa

I WAS struck the other day by the number of tiny red “bloodsuckers” crawling around on my windowsills and walls. It seems to me that I haven’t seen these tiny creatures in years, or maybe I just haven’t noticed them. Squishing them and the red streaks they leave are a distinct nostalgic memory from childhood summers along with Soda Stream, Wimbledon and rounders. This time round curiosity got the better of me and I turned to my ”Complete Irish Wildlife” to find out more. Turns out that the book isn’t as complete as promised and could be renamed “Almost Complete Irish Wildlife”. Further digging was needed. It turns out that the bloodsuckers are clover mites or to give them their scientific name, Bryobia praetiosa. They are harmless mites that spend their short life on the hunt for heat. As the com-

mon name suggests they are predominantly found on lawns where they feed on clover and other plants. They scurry around on walls and windowsills soaking up the heat that’s been absorbed from the Sun. They live for about one month. The mites have a neat trick in that they have dispensed with the need for males and so all the mites are female and don’t need males to reproduce which makes each mother and her many offspring clones of each other. They are completely harmless to animals and despite their appearance don’t feed on blood. They can however damage lawns and crops if they infest in great numbers. Occasionally they come into homes, but usually die within a few days if they do. Keep an eye out for them in the coming weeks and be sure and point out these little bloodsuckers to any impressionable young children in the vicinity.

Dromhall In The Running For Top Wedding Award THE team at the four-star Dromhall Hotel is delighted to have been nominated in the Mrs2Be Bride’s Choice Awards for 2017 for the fourth year running, following on from winning the Best Wedding Venue – Hotel Category in 2016. Mrs2Be Bride’s Choice Awards recognise excellent quality of service, professionalism and flexibility of wedding suppliers and venues. The Dromhall Hotel was nominated by couples who held their wedding reception at the venue in 2016, which distinguishes Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Award nominations from others as they are not based on public voting, but are based on reviews from real couples who hosted their wedding receptions

at the Hotel in 2016. Bernadette Randles, managing director of The Dromhall Hotel, said: “It is lovely to be nominated by a bride and groom who held their special day with us, as it shows that they are happy with the level of service received. It also recognises our team of hardworking staff, who always aim to ensure top levels of service are provided and work tirelessly to ensure a couple’s dream day becomes reality.” If you are interested in holding your wedding celebration in The Dromhall Hotel, why not give its wedding co-ordinator Ciara O’Callaghan a call on 064-6639300 to book a showaround and wedding consultation.

Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan’s Wartime Film Christopher Nolan’s wartime film Dunkirk is praised as a ‘masterpiece’ Harry Styles is commended for ‘impressive debut’ in favourable early reviews

Singer Styles joins movie giants Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy on the red carpet for the world premiere of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk in London. The stars of Dunkirk brought out the glamour for the world premiere of Christopher Nolan’s big screen release, Dunkirk. Harry Styles, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy as well as Prince Harry - led the extremely dapper arrivals at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square for the historical action drama which tells the story of soldiers being evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk during the Second War War. The One Direction star, 23, parted ways with his usual kooky ensembles for a more reserved look for the flick’s big event - which released today in Ireland - while Tom, 39, and Cillian, 41, also looked undeniably suave in their fitted suits.

Prince Harry, 32, also added to the star-studded event as he made an incredibly dashing arrival to the red carpet. Harry looked utterly dashing as he posed for photographers in a crisp white shirt and a maroon and navy tie. He wasn’t the only one bringing out the glamour, as Tom was joined by his beautiful wife Charlotte Riley. The hunk was joined by his other co-star Fionn Whitehead, who takes on the role of Tommy in the eagerly anticipated flick. The star, whose claim to fame will be Nolan’s Dunkirk, did his best to make a style statement for his big night. The rising star looked handsome in a fitted grey plaid three-piece suit, which consisted of a blazer, wasitcoat and trousers. A crisp white shirt and black tie completed the suave look, as did a pair of shiny black boots.

Bodies Of Swiss Couple Missing For 75 Years Found On Glacier A DECADES-OLD mystery drew to a poignant close this week as the bodies of a Swiss couple who went missing 75 years ago in the Alps were found on a shrinking glacier. And the response of the couple’s daughter summed it up as she said: “For the funeral, I won’t wear black. I think that white would be more appropriate. It represents hope, which I never lost.” Marcelin and Francine Dumoulin, the parents of seven children, had gone to milk their cows in a meadow above Chandolin in the Valais canton on August 15, 1942. “We spent our whole lives looking for them, without stopping. We thought that we could give them the funeral they deserved one day,” their youngest daughter, Marceline Udry-Dumoulin, 75, told the Lausanne daily Le Matin. “I can say that after 75 years of waiting this news gives me a deep sense of calm.”

Valais cantonal police said two bodies bearing identity papers had been discovered last week by a worker on Tsanfleuron glacier near a ski lift above Les Diablerets resort at an altitude of 2,615 metres (8,600ft).

“The bodies were lying near each other. It was a man and a woman wearing clothing dating from the period of world war two,” Bernhard Tschannen, the director of Glacier 3000, told the paper.

“They were perfectly preserved in the glacier and their belongings were intact.” He told the Tribune de Geneve: “We think they may have fallen into a crevasse where they stayed for decades. As the glacier receded, it gave up their bodies.” Marcelin Dumoulin, 40, a shoemaker, and Francine, 37, a teacher, left five sons and two daughters. “It was the first time my mother went with him on such an excursion. She was always pregnant and couldn’t climb in the difficult conditions of a glacier,” Udry-Dumoulin said. “After a while, we children were separated and placed in families. I was lucky to stay with my aunt. We all lived in the region but became strangers.”

Emma Watson Launches Appeal For Missing Rings EMMA WATSON has launched a social media appeal after losing her “most meaningful and special possession” at a luxury London spa at the weekend. The rings are of huge sentimental value to the Harry Potter actress who has offered a reward for “information leading to the return of [the] rings” as she shared details of their sentimental value on Facebook. Explaining that one of the rings was bought by her mother the day after she was born, and handed down on Emma’s 18th birthday in 2009, the star wrote: “Reward for information leading to the return of rings lost Sunday 16th July at Mandarin Oriental Spa, London. “On Sunday afternoon I went for a treatment at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Spa in Hyde Park, London. Before my appointment I removed 3 silver rings from my fingers and put them in the

safe inside the locker. When I left, I forgot to take my rings from the safe. “When I got home I realised the rings were not on my hands and I called the spa, but at this time the spa was closed. Security checked the safe and said there was nothing in it but that the spa would be open again in the morning and they could speak to them then and see if they had them or if anyone had handed them in. She added: “If anyone was at the Mandarin Oriental Spa on Sunday from 3pm onwards and saw the rings or accidentally picked them up or knows anything about them, I cannot express how much it would mean if they came back to me – no questions asked. “If you have seen them or have any information please email: findthering@outlook.com”.

Australian Woman Shot By Police Officer QUESTIONS need to be answered after a Minneapolis police officer shot a woman this week. The police officer’s partner said the officer had been “startled by a loud sound” just before the incident, investigators say. Justine Damond, originally from Sydney, Australia, was gunned down after calling police to report a possible crime. On a police radio recording, an officer speaks of fireworks being let off near where the shooting happened. Australian Prime Minister Mal-

colm Turnbull has said he wants answers from the US over the killing. “It is a shocking killing, and yes, we are demanding answers on behalf of her family,” he told Australian TV. The shooting occurred as 40-year-old Ms Damond, dressed in her pyjamas, approached the driver’s side door to talk to the officer at the wheel after police arrived. Officer Mohamed Noor, who was sitting in the passenger seat, fired his weapon across his partner and through the driver’s side window, striking Ms Damond, the Minne-

sota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said. The BCA said that Officer Matthew Harrity, who was driving the car, had told investigators that Ms Damond had come towards the car immediately after he heard a loud sound. After the shooting, the officers are heard on the police radio recording telling dispatchers they are performing CPR and that “no suspects are at large”. State investigators say the officers failed to activate their body or dashboard cameras and both officers have been placed on administrative leave.

Second GIANT Squid Landed By Crew Off Kerry Coast IT’S one of the rarest creatures on the planet with only seven recorded in the past three and a half centuries – so what are the odds that four of those seven were discovered by the same family? A Kerry fishing crew was in “disbelief” this week after they landed their second extremely rare giant squid in a matter of months. In May, the crew from the Cú na Mara landed the first giant squid, or Architeuthis dux, caught in 22 years off the coast of Dingle. It was 5.8m (20ft) long. Tuesday’s finding was a slightly smaller specimen, measuring 5.5 metres. It was landed by the same crew during a trawl on the Porcupine Bank. Marine biologist Dr Kevin Flannery said the landing of giant squid in Ireland is extremely rare. “Only seven have been record-

ed here since records began almost 350 years ago,” he told RTÉ. “The very first giant squid recorded in Ireland was also landed in Dingle, when fishermen brought one ashore in 1673,” he added. The skipper of the Cú na Mara, Patrick Flannery, said they had been trawling quite close to where they had caught a giant squid a couple of months ago. “When we opened the net we couldn’t believe it, that it was another one. The lads were very excited. What are the chances of two in the one year?” By coincidence, Mr Flannery’s father, Michael Flannery, also landed two giant squid in 1995, meaning four of the seven giant squid on record have been found by members of the same family. “I have two and he has two. I’ll probably have to catch a third now so that I can have bragging rights,” he added.

The three-car collision occurred south of Aclint Bridge, Ardee, Co Louth, at approximately 1am.

Russia Talks Revenge Against US RUSSIA said on Tuesday that it reserved the right to retaliate against the United States after a meeting in Washington ended without an agreement to return Russian diplomatic property the US had seized, reports Reuters. Barack Obama, then US president, ordered the seizure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in New York and Maryland and the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats in December over what he said was their involvement in hacking the 2016 US presidential election campaign, something Russia flatly denies. President Vladimir Putin decided not to retaliate at the time, saying he would wait to see what the new administration of Donald

Trump would do. But Trump, besieged by a regular stream of questions about his associates’ purported links to Russia, has scant room for manoeuvre. He risks being accused of being overly friendly to Moscow if he hands back the compounds without getting something politically substantial in return. Moscow had said a lot would depend on the outcome of a meeting in Washington on Monday between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and US Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon. The meeting ended without agreement. The Russian Foreign Ministry said its patience was wearing thin.

Woman Claiming To Be Salvador Dali’s ‘Secret Daughter’ Wins Court Battle To Exhume His Body THE woman who claims to be the secret daughter of surrealist master Salvador Dali has said she is “relieved” after winning the court battle to exhume his body for DNA tests. Maria Pilar Abel told a press conference: “I am very positive you know what I mean.” The 61-year-old gained permission from Catalonia’s High Court to obtain samples

from the famed surrealist artist’s body that will settle the question of her paternity last month. Officials at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, Spain, a spokeswoman for the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation confirmed that his body would be exhumed.

Imma Parada told the New York Post that the museum would not be accessible during the exhumation and no photos will be allowed. Ms Abel has claimed that she was the result of an affair while her mother was working as an employee at the Dali household in the 1950s.

She said last week that she was searching “for my identity, to find out who I am.” She added: “I just want the truth to be known.” Ms Abel, a divorced mother of four who reportedly works as a tarot card reader for a Spanish television station, said she found out about the purported affair between Dalí and her mother from her grandmother.

Aisle Be There For You WHEN Sheila Sheehan and Gearoid O’Callaghan were wed recently, it was not their first time walking down the aisle together. The couple, who started dating just a few years ago, have known one another since childhood and were flowergirl and pageboy together at a wedding over 25 years ago. Gearoid popped the question in New York last year as the couple strolled in Central Park and they exchanged vows in St James’s Church in Killorglin and held their reception in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. The bride and groom posed for the camera of photographer Konrad Paprocki at a number of scenic spots including Cromane as well as beside the groom’s grandparents’ house, by the River Laune, and near the bride’s parents’ house. Helping them celebrate their big day were Sheila’s mother and father Josephine and John Sheehan and Gearoid’s parents Anna and Sean O’Callaghan as well as his grandmother Rita O’Callaghan. Teresa Sheehan was chief bridesmaid while Katherine Heffernan, Caragh Mulvihill, Ann Maria Tyther and Aisling O’Carroll also took on bridesmaid duties. Daryl Corkery took on best-man duties with Kieran Corkery, James O’Sullivan, Paul Sheehan and David O’Riordan as groomsmen. Leah Sheehan was flowergirl and Peadar Foley was pageboy. Acclaimed wedding band Truly Diverse kept everyone dancing throughout the evening Sandra Flynn and The Hair Studio, Killorglin, ensured the bridal hair and makeup were picture perfect. The newlyweds jetted Stateside for their honeymoon, stopping off in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando and Miami as well as Cancun in Mexico. Sheila is the marketing and social media manager at the Muckross Park Hotel & Spa in Killarney, while Gearoid is the production manager at Splash Designs/Invite Hub. They will reside in Gurrane West, Killorglin.

Dirk Gently’s

Holistic Detective Agency

Reviewed: The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel AMY ENGEL already has an enviable reputation for her young adult novels and with The Roanoke Girls makes her way into adult fiction. This mesmerising tale is a dark story with gothic undertones. Lane Roanoke was 15 years old when her chronically depressed mother hanged herself in their New York City apartment. Her mother never spoke about her parents, Yates and Lillian Roanoke, their mansion or her small hometown of Osage Flats, Kansas. Lane is surprised when her social worker says her grandparents are keen to have her come live with

Netflix

them. In Kansas, Lane finds a home of sorts, growing close to her cousin Allegra, who’s only a year older. But something happens during that summer that disturbs Lane, and she leaves. Ten years later, Lane gets a call from her grandfather, begging her to come home because Allegra has disappeared. Although she was determined never to return, Lane is drawn back to Roanoke, harbouring a deep guilt for leaving Allegra behind. While the local police cannot find Allegra, Lane follows a set of clues her cousin left specifically for her.

A RIOTOUS comedy-drama-thriller loosely based on author Douglas Adams’ novels in the Hitch-Hikers’ Guide series, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is like nothing else on TV – but in a very good way. The plot is way too convoluted to go into here, but that’s actually the point: as a “holistic” detective, Dirk Gently simply investigates crimes he happens across

I NE'FFLIX

randomly and follows the most obscure and seemingly unconnected of leads as he does so. What transpires is a gloriously serendipitous panoply of offbeat diversions, Technicolor characters and bizarre events taking in psychic powers, cats, dogs and homicidal angels. This is far too confusing to watch piecemeal so brace yourself for a couple of lengthy sittings!

KILLARNEY CARDIAC RESPONSE UNIT RECRUITMENT DRIVE

Do You Want To Help Save Lives? Since the Killarney Cardiac Responser went live with the National Ambulance Service on August 25, 2015, it has responded to over 400 calls alongside the ambulance service. And it is always on the lookout for new volunteers. “We are now launching a recruitment drive for new members,” said scheme co-ordinator Leo O’Connor. The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit complements the National Ambulance Service by providing care and utilising those vital few minutes until the ambulance team arrives on the scene. “We cover an area of 6km from the centre of Killarney town,” added Leo.

“If anyone is interested in joining up and learning lifesaving skills please contact our recruitment officer on 085-8255280.” Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Emergency First Responders (EMFs) are welcome to join also. Leo paid tribute to sponsors Independent Irish Healthfoods Ltd, the Killarney Plaza Hotel and Tricel. “We would like to thank them for their very generous support,” said the unit co-ordinator. For more information see www.killarneycru.ie or check out Killarney Cardiac Response Unit’s Facebook page or call 085-8255280.

The volunteers attend calls alongside the National Ambulance Service. The team paid tribute to the support of local businesses, including main sponsors Independent Irish Health Foods Ltd, the Killarney Plaza Hotel and Tricel. CACI Facial

THE CACI Ultimate Facial delivers real visible and corrective results without the need for surgery. This facial lasts 90 minutes and a number of steps are followed to combat signs of ageing, combining the effects of microdermabrasion, micro current, lymphatic drainage and a collagen-based hydro-mask. Microdermabrasion is a highly effective exfoliation treatment suitable for all skin types. It buffs away the dead skin on the surface layer of the skin. Red and blue LED lights are used to heal, promote collagen production, and provide anti-bacterial properties. The micro current used deeply penetrates into the muscle, lifting, toning and re-educating the muscle back to its original position. Enhanced Tissue Repair (ETR) pads are applied to the clients’ areas of concern, to repair skin tissue and increase collagen and elastin production by 62%. The “wrinkle comb” is then used on deep lines and wrinkles where it instantly plumps and smooths the skin. An amino lift peptide complex serum, containing a combination of amino acids and plant steroid peptides, is used with the “wrinkle comb” help minimise and soften the look of facial lines. A hydro-tone mask, infused with hyaluronic acid and collagen, is applied using galvanic current. To conclude your treatment a prescriptive serum, moisturiser, eye cream and SPF 50 is applied. A course of CACIs is recommended for optimum results.

To celebrate the spa’s new look, spa manager Jessica Horgan and her team are offering some really exciting summer packages. Choose from Glow, €69, and Shine, €99, or the Spa Special, €99. The Glow package is a 40-minute treatment of choice, featuring Lime & Ginger or Massage or Booster facial followed by light lunch in the hotel’s Garden Bar. The Shine package features a Tri-Enzyme facial and back massage and also includes light lunch. Thirdly, check out the Spa Special, which features an Elemis Biotec Firm and Lift Facial. The Elemis Biotec facials are ones to look out for if you have a special occasion on the hori-

zon. Ultra-relaxing, they really live up to their billing as “results-driven” treatments. They combine technology and the comforting magic of traditional hands-on massage and are regarded as the “next generation” of facials. Following this treatment, I drifted home from The Spa feeling super-relaxed and could definitely feel and see a difference days later. It is for this reason that many opt for this treatment prior to a big event such as a wedding, says Jessica. “The Triple-Tec Anti-Wrinkle Facial is ideal if you have a wedding coming up and is often chosen by brides and mothers-of-the-bride,” she said. Elemis Biotec offers five standalone technologies in one machine; Ultrasonic Peel, LED Light Therapy, Galvanic Current, Microcurrent and Oxygen Infusion. Powerful plant actives work with the body’s natural bioelectrical field and enhance the skin’s ability to rejuvenate. There are also facials tailored to sensitive and blemish-prone skin as well as a specific lifting facial. Contact The Spa at the Killarney Park on 0646670089.

‘It Is Unfair To Expect Parents/ Guardians To Wait Almost Six Months For A Decision On DCA’ THE Department of Social Protection is currently experiencing delays in the processing of Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) claims. At present it is taking 20 weeks on average to finalise an application. Applications are processed in date of receipt order. I recently raised this issue with the Minister stating that it is unfair to expect parents/guardians to wait almost six months for a decision on DCA. I am getting several calls every day regarding the delay in this payment from concerned parents and it is crazy that they are expected to wait so long for a decision. In the reply the Department has explained the reason for the delay: There are a number of factors that have contributed to the extended time required to process claims. The year-onyear increase in volumes over recent years has consistently been in the 1520% range due to an increase in population and more awareness of the scheme. Over 1,000 claims were received in May, along with a further 700 in June; whereas the average would have been 400 per month a few years ago.

Secondly, following a High Court ruling in 2016, there is now a need for the Department’s medical assessors to provide the deciding officer with a more detailed opinion on the child’s eligibility for the scheme and for the deciding officer in turn to provide more detailed reasons for their decision when communicating this to the customer. These factors have resulted in the time taken to finalise applications increasing significantly and as a result the numbers being processed have reduced and the timescale to finalise each application has increased. I asked the Minister what is being done to deal with this lengthy delay and was informed that corrective actions are being taken, with additional deciding officers assigned to work on the scheme. Once these deciding officers become fully operational, the increase in claim processing capacity should allow for an improvement in processing times, I was informed. Gratitude For Kindness Following Injury MY WIFE Sue and I spent a week at Kathleen’s Country House in Killarney. On Thursday, July 6, we returned to Killarney in a pony and trap and after alighting my wife tripped and fell, dislocating her shoulder. The driver – Anthony – was extremely helpful in phoning for an ambulance and together with another driver provided blankets to keep her warm as she lay on the ground unable to get up. Although his work had finished for the day he remained for an

hour until the ambulance arrived. A member of the council team, John Ahern, appeared and also contacted the ambulance service. The ambulance men and all the staff at University Hospital Kerry in Tralee were extremely helpful and kind. I am contacting Killarney Advertiser in order to pass on our gratitude to all concerned. Our Croke Park

I HAVE a number of cousins who are excellent footballers and we as a family do our best to go to all their games to support them. When I’ve held my concerts and wanted them to come along I told them that concerts are “my Croke Park”! Well, I recently was one of the very lucky people who got to be present at one of the most amazing spectacles that Croke Park has ever seen and there was not a football or sliotar in sight. On July 8 the band Coldplay came to Croke Park and played a gig that none of us will ever forget. This concert truly was the arts world at its finest. Not only was the music incredible but the visual display was out of this world. The concert began with a classical singer singing O Mio Babbino Caro. This was a great way to catch the audience’s attention from the outset and from there things just got better and better.

Fáilte Ireland

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley was one of the 82,000 fans at the Coldplay concert recently

From the flashing lights on everyone’s wristbands to the moment Chris Martin brought a man in a wheelchair on stage to play the harmonica, we were taken on an incredible journey with a band who clearly live for music. My favourite part of the show was when Chris Martin said that they used to play in Ireland years ago to audiences of “basically nobody” so they were blown away by the response they were getting from the 82,000 fans in the stadium. He was genuinely so grateful to each person who came because he remembers the days of playing to almost empty halls. This concert shows that this great country can celebrate both our national sports and music in the same great venue and this makes me proud to be Irish. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Cultural Contest

APPLICANTS have two more weeks to enter their destination in the eighth European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition as Fáilte Ireland searches to find the destination in Ireland which has best used its local cultural assets as potential to grow visitor numbers. Full competition details are available at www.failteireland.ie/eden or by emailing eden.helpdesk@failteireland.ie. The closing date for entries is 4pm on Monday, July 31, at 2017. The theme for 2017 is “Tangible Cultural Tourism” and the tourism authority is looking for applications from emerging destinations in Ireland who have developed a specific tourism offering based on their cultural assets that balances sustaining the local environment with the promotion of viable tourism. EDEN is an EU project promoting sustainable tourism development across the European Union and is currently held every two years in 29 member states. Previous Irish winners include the Burren Food Trail (Tourism & Local Gastronomy), the Great Western Greenway (Tourism & the Regeneration of Physical Sites) and Loop Head (Aquatic Tourism). The 2017 winning destination will receive a photo shoot of the destination, a certificate of achievement and an awards ceremony.

Ferrari Mull Over Tyre NIGHTMARE At Silverstone FERRARI has struggled to hold their tongue after two late tyre failures left them scrambling for points at the British Grand Prix last weekend. Kimi Raikkonen had been running in second place, splitting the two Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, with just three laps to go when his front left tyre developed a puncture. And it went from bad to worse for Ferrari when Sebastian Vettel dropped out of fourth place with the exact same issue. But team principal Maurizio Arrivabene refused to apportion too much blame in the aftermath of a difficult finish. “Even if the reasons are obvious, complaining about losing a second and a fourth place

is not Ferrari’s style,” said Arrivabene. Kimi Raikkonen was less than impressed by finishing third with Lewis Hamilton winning. “It’s disappointing because without that issue the second place was secured, and we deserved a better result,” Raikkonen said. These tyre issues for Ferrari and particularly for Vettel, the championship leader has allowed Hamilton to close within one point of the championship.

Timmy Lynch was second overall and first in class in his Caterham special.

PRECISION driving at its best was on view in Fossa recently as the grounds of Liebherr Container Cranes hosted the KDMC Autotest event. Over 20 competitors took part, converging on Fossa from as far afield as Dublin, with the venue being hailed as one of the best test venues in the country. Ian White from Kilkenny was the overall winner in his Mini Special. Killorglin man Timmy Lynch was second overall and first in class in his Caterham special.

Rathmore man Peter Falvey was third overall and first in class in his Vauxhall Nova. The clerks of the course were Dan McSweeney and Todd Falvey. “It was a great to see the professional excellent display of car handling skill and control,” said Johnny Hickey of Killarney & District Motor Club. Twelve tests were held at the venue, with a dual tandem test and electronic timing forming part of the programme.

Daimler Benz Recalls Three Million Diesel Cars Over Emissions

GERMAN luxury car maker Daimler, which is being investigated for alleged emissions cheating, announced this week a voluntary recall of more than three million Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles in Europe. It said it had already launched a service action for other models and that, “in order to effectively improve the emissions of additional model series, Daimler has now decided to extend the service action to include over three million

Mercedes-Benz vehicles”. The Stuttgart-based company said the action would cost the company €220 million euros and be free of charge for customers. “In this way, Daimler is making a significant contribution to the reduction of nitrogen-oxide emissions from diesel vehicles in European inner cities,” it said in a statement. Investigators suspect Daimler used a similar so-called “defeat device” to

Credit Union

Volkswagen, which in 2015 admitted to manipulating emissions readings on 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide. Software in the motor runs the emissions treatment system at a higher setting when it detects the vehicle is undergoing regulatory testing. In its latest statement, Daimler said Mercedes-Benz had developed a completely new diesel engine family that could meet stricter EU emission regulations to come.

Helen Revs Up SEAT Extends Sensational 172 To Win New Car Offers At Dineen O’Donoghue

HELEN BROSNAN was the lucky winner of the Killarney Credit Union summer members’ draw as she received the keys to a brand-new Suzuki during the week. The gleaming motor was the top prize in the draw, which is run by the Killarney branch twice a year.

In total the branch awarded some €25,000 in prizes between 13 lucky winners. Pat Delaney, chairman, Killarney Credit Union, and Mark Murphy, CEO, Killarney Credit Union, and Dermot Healy of Healy Motors presented the keys to the new car to Helen.

THERE’S still time to #StartMoving this summer thanks to SEAT Ireland’s phenomenal 172 offers which have been extended until July 31. Available at Dineen O’Donoghue, Cork Road, Killarney for a limited time only, the unbeatable incentives include an extremely generous and unmissable offer to celebrate the arrival of the all-new fifth generation SEAT Ibiza. The 3,2,1 #StartMoving package boasts a three-year service plan completely free of charge, 2% finance on selected Ibiza models with monthly repayments from only €169, PLUS 1-year free road tax. Extended 172 offers include a tradein bonus of up to €4,000 on the award-winning SEAT Ateca along with a staggering 2.9% PCP finance - resulting in monthly repayments of just €269. What’s more, for the upgraded new SEAT Leon, a trade-in bonus of up to €3,000 is available in addition to a three-year service plan for just €299.

0% finance is available on selected Leon models meaning monthly repayments start from as little as €219. Niall Phillips, Brand Director of SEAT Ireland, said: “Our recent offers have been incredibly well-received by Irish motorists and so we are very pleased to announce we will be extending our best ever offers until July 31st. We are coupling our most attractive finance offers ever with the greatest product range in the brand’s history. There has never been a better time to purchase the SEAT Ateca, upgraded Leon or all-new SEAT Ibiza.” The extension of SEAT’s 172 finance offers comes at a particularly exciting time for the brand, which is in the midst of its biggest ever product offensive; the all-new SEAT Ibiza will be presented to the Irish market in July, and the new SEAT Arona will follow later in the year. AUDI has been slapped with a Europe-wide stop-sale order on all of its petrol-powered A4 and A5 vehicles, including its high-profile S4 and S5 performance models for up to two months. The move leaves Audi in the unenviable position of being unable to legally deliver a petrol-powered model to A4 and A5 buyers exactly when a buyer backlash against diesel engines seemingly gathers steam across Europe. The only upside for Audi is that it insists it will recover almost all of its S4 and S5 sales in the long run. Since the Dieselgate scandal broke in September 2015, it has seen the entire emissions-cheating software program traced back to its development department, its 3.0-litre V6 TDIs caught cheating in the US.

THE Glenflesk U12s travelled to Round Towers GAA, Kildare Town, to participate in the Fergus Hopkins Invitational Tournament on Saturday. This is a prestigious tournament with 16 teams participating: Round Towers Kildare, Warwickshire UK, Tinryland Carlow, St Vincent’s Offaly, St Finbarr’s Cork, Ramour United Cavan, Palatine Carlow, Carrick-Sarsfields Longford, Summerhill Meath, Baltinglass Wicklow, Westport Mayo, Glenflesk Kerry, Louisburg Mayo, Clan na Gael Fontenoy Dublin, St Mark’s Dublin and Allenwood Kildare. The second game against the host club, Round Towers Kildare, ebbed and flowed and resulted in a draw, Glenflesk 3-7 Round Towers 5-1, which was a fair result for both teams. This also meant that footballing friends Seamus Moynihan, Kerry, and Glen Ryan from Kildare also shared the spoils as both had sons participating in this game. These were two close games against strong opposition with the wind making a big difference in each game. In the final pool game Glenflesk played

All three pool games were close games against strong opposition with the wind making a big difference in each game. Following the pool games Glenflesk qualified for the shield semi-final against Palatine from Carlow. There was a novel aspect to this game with former Glenflesk player and Carlow inter county player Chris Crowley now playing for Palatine. This was a tight skillful game and a super performance by the

Glenflesk boys to win by four points, Glenflesk 3-11 Palatine Carlow 3-7. This game could have gone either way but great spirit was shown by Glenflesk to hold on and qualify for the final. The Glenflesk boys put in a very strong performance in the final against Clan na Gael Fontenoy Dublin and led the game from start to finish. Clann na Gael battled to the end and a late couple of goals sealed the result in a 5-12 to 1-8 win for Glenflesk. Captain for the day Gearoid Healy accepted the shield on behalf of the team but it was an all round team performance from mentors and players alike with all 19 players who travelled contributing to the win.

GUERIN

HORGAN

With love we remember John Doyle, Rathanane, Kilcummin, Killarney whose anniversary occurs on the 25th of July.

In loving memory of our beloved son James, R.I.P., Maulykevane, Headford, Killarney who died tragically (road accident) on the 20th July, 1990 aged 18.

Fondest memories everyday of our dear father Con Guerin, late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney who sadly left us on the 26th July, 1989. Also remembering his wife Kathy who sadly left us on the 21st of October 2005 and their beloved son, our beloved brother Cornelius (Con) who sadly departed from us on 22th of September 2014.

In loving memory of my dear Mother Charlotte (Lottie) Horgan late of 13 St. Brendans Place, Killarney who died on the 25th July, 1992.

“Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose”

So rest in peace dear loved one And thanks for all you’ve done We pray that God has given you The crown you’ve truly won.

Don’t think of him as gone away, His journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one, Just think of him as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years, Think how he must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away, And think of him as living, In the hearts of those he touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And he was loved so much. Sadly missed and forever in our heart. Your loving wife Lynda and daughter Ruth. Anniversary Mass will take place in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Kilcummin, on Saturday 22nd July at 7.30pm.

You can shed tears that he is gone, Or you can smile because he has lived, You can remember him And only that he’s gone, Or you can cherish his memory, And let it live on, You can close your mind, Be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he’d want: Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Loving you always Mum and Dad. You always had a smile to share, A laugh, a joke, a time to care, Each of us in our own way, Have special thoughts of you today. Miss you always Sharon, Damien, Brian, Cathal, Louise, brother-in-law Brian, nieces Naoise and Fia and nephew Brían. Sometimes it’s hard to understand Why certain things must be And the reasons why they happen Are often hard to see

If you never have I hope you never do, For when we lost our son Nathan, Our hearts just broke in two. One gift in life you cannot buy,

Love always Killian and Aoife. XXXX

Throughout our lives we always will. Too deeply loved and missed to ever be forgotten. Loved with a love beyond compare Your heartbroken Mom and Dad. XXXX

AFTER their sold-out tour of America and the UK, Picture This return to headline the INEC Killarney this November 10. Tickets from €30 includes booking fee, on sale this Friday at 9am. Picture This grabbed the attention of Ireland when an iPhone video of their track ‘Take My Hand’ went viral. A subsequent gig in Grand Social was upgraded to The Academy as demand was so fierce and Picture This became a force to be reckoned with. Fast forward two years and the band have a #1 Gold selling EP – which is still in the charts after 40 weeks, 30,000 tickets sold in Ireland alone and a second headline slot behind Stormzy at Longitude Festival this July. Hailing from Athy, Co Kildare, Jimmy Rainsford and Ryan Hennessy joined forces at the end of October 2015. Upon hearing Ryan’s unique voice after spotting him performing in local pubs and venues, Jimmy invited Ryan to join him in his studio to record some tracks. After quickly hitting it off the duo decided to make the partnership more permanent and Picture This was born.

Garden Magic Debby Looney

It’s really been feeling like summer lately, making Debby Looney turn her focus on water features ONE thing I associate with fine weather is water – watering pots, watering lawns, making sure there is water in the birdbath…. And, for me, water in the garden is a natural progression. Water features are a wonderful way to add interest to any type of garden. There are fountains of all shapes and sizes, water features such as a self-contained waterfall, glazed terracotta bowls, or solar-powered fountains. However, for most gardeners, installing a pond is a challenge we are willing to take on! There are several types of ponds, there is the informal pond, fed by a stream maybe and surrounded by a bog garden, or there are formal ponds and rills. Informal ponds are relatively easy to build. You can buy a precast pond liner, which are durable but costly. To install, just dig a hole a little larger than your preformed pond liner. Put a layer of sand in the bottom and place your liner into it. It is easier to backfill with sand but the soil you dug out will also do. The other option is a flexible pond liner, EPDM rubber is best. Remember to take the depth of your pond into account when measuring! If you wish to grow water lilies, or keep fish, a depth of at least 70cm is necessary. Again, start by digging your shape, then make sure there are no sharp stones sticking out. You can line the hole with old carpet, or rockwool, before placing the liner in. It is advisable to create shelves at different heights, both for growing different types of aquatic plants, as well as making it easier for frogs to climb out! Formal ponds are slightly more difficult to construct. They are usually symmetrical shapes, made from concrete and edged with bricks or paving stones. Again, start by digging out the shape, then pour in concrete for the base. Place shuttering around the sides and fill with concrete. Depending on the size you may need to use wire mesh to prevent cracking. Once the concrete is fully dry you will need to paint it with a waterproofer. A bog garden can be created around the natural pond, again line it with plastic or rubber, but make sure the water can drain away. Choosing plants for ponds is very exciting. There are beautiful waterlilies in many colours, floating plants and oxygenators. For a healthy pond it is important that about 70% of the surface area is covered. Incorporating some type of stream or waterfall is also a good idea, this keeps the water flowing and oxygenated. Pumps are relatively cheap, and the sound of trickling water adds interest. A small pond can be built in a day – I know, I’ve done it – and it really adds another dimension to any garden, as well as attracting wildlife, which can only be a good thing! • Got a gardening question? Cournane Brace Fires Athletic Into Cup Final It took a replay to see off a dogged Castleisland side but the double is still on, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

Greyhound Bar KO Cup Semi-Final (Replay) Killarney Athletic 3-1 Castleisland Killarney Athletic secured their place in this year’s Greyhound Bar KO Cup Final with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Castleisland in Tralee on Sunday. Castleisland earned themselves a replay with a dramatic fightback the week before, two late goals cancelling out Pauly O’Donoghue’s free kick and Lukasz Polak’s audacious volley. We certainly weren’t at our best in the drawn game and the replay was always going to be another tough battle. Castleisland are a physical team and they can be difficult to break down, while at the other end they’re notorious for being very dangerous from set pieces. In fact, they took the lead from a dead ball in the opening minute on Sunday when Colin McCarthy’s long lump into the box evaded everyone and bounced into the corner of the net. It was a disastrous start from our point of view and it took us a while to get our act together. Castleisland were happy to sit on their 1-0 advantage and we had a lot of the ball for the remainder of the half but Aidan O’Callaghan and his fellow Island defenders

did a good job of keeping us at bay. We started to look more threatening in the second half with Will Courtney and Seánie Cournane in particular causing problems, and when Daithí Casey equalised with a precise free kick in the 59th minute it obviously gave us a massive boost. Courtney set up Cournane a minute later to make it 2-1 and momentum was very much in our favour. Castleisland, however, have a real never-say-die attitude and with the excellent Seán Brosnan pulling the strings, we felt that a one-goal lead wasn’t good enough. Luckily for us, Seán Cournane was in top form and he extended our lead just five minutes later with an unbelievable strike from 30 yards out. It was a goal worthy of winning any match and although Castleisland tried manfully to fight their way back into the game, we managed to hold on and advance to the final. Our opponents on Saturday will be Mitchels Avenue from Tralee. They’re a relatively new club (formed in 2013) but they’re well on their way to becoming one of the top sides in the county. With quality players like David Hennessy, Lorcan Seymour and Brendan Coffey in their ranks, they’ve

achieved a string of successive promotions and next season they’ll play in the Premier B (second tier). We met them last season in the FAI Junior Cup and they took us to extra time. We eventually ran out 3-2 winners but they’re a lot stronger than most lower league sides; in fact, they’ll probably fancy their chances of getting promoted to the Premier next season so we certainly won’t be taking them lightly. This will be our 31st and (hopefully) final competitive game of a very long season and it would be great to cap it off with another win and another trophy, but we know that we’ll have to be at our very best to emerge victorious. 21.07.17 Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald NOT alone did Dublin win easily in Croke Park on Sunday last defeating Kildare 2-23 to 0-17, but they set several records. This was their seventh Leinster SFC title in a row and captain Stephen Cluxton equalled the record number of senior championship appearances joining Marc Ó Shea and Tomás Ó Se. He will go on to win several more even though he is 35 years old. Coincidentally Federer, also 35 won his eighth Wimbledon title. Kildare made a game of it, but the result was never in doubt, especially when those two early goals smoothed their way to certain victory. Kildare needed to score those goals but it was the pacey Dubs that did the damage. Goal scorer Dean Rock was black carded, but it made no difference. In comes veteran Bernard Brogan who scored five points from play. Con O’Callaghan took over the duties of placekicking and he belied his inexperience at this level. The Under 21 star kicked a total of 12 points, 6 from frees and another half dozen from play. He was a treat to watch and Jim Gavin will be very happy that the young lads he is blooding are really stepping up to the plate. Gavin is spoiled for choice. Remember Diarmuid Connolly was suspended, but the Dublin forward division wasn’t weakened one iota. One cannot forget that Michael Darragh MacAuley and Paul Flynn were also unavailable.

FRIGHTENING PACE With so much fire power one asks is there anyone to stop the Dubs machine? Their pace is frightening all over the field and while Kerry are the best placed team to tackle the Dubs one wonders about the pace of the Kerrymen. Maher and Moran are two fine fielders, but they do not have the pace of Fenton and Kilkenny or any other pairing Gavin decides to use at numbers eight and nine. He has plenty of options. The Dublin half-back line is turbo driven, especially McCarthy and McCaffrey and they can come up and score. The Kerry half-forward line cannot match them for speed. Although O’Callaghan scored 12 points and Brogan hit 5. No less than nine players scored for Dublin on Sunday last. Apart from James O’Donoghue and Paul Geaney very few scores come from the rest of the Kerry team.

GREAT SAVE BY CLUXTON This wasn’t a stroll in the Park like the Westmeath game. There were always the eight or nine points between the sides. Things might have been closer after the 43rd minute when a great chance came Kildare’s way. Stephen Cluxton brought a mighty save from Daniel Flynn’s goal bound shot. The ball is transferred up-field immediately for

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy WITH the British and Irish Lions tour over and the players returned home, taking a very well earned break, things are pretty quiet on the rugby front. Rumours abound as to who will take over the top job at Munster next season as Rassie Erasmus takes up the mantle back home at South Africa as the national side’s chief. Names like Felix Jones and Jerry Flannery seem to have much traction at the moment as both are involved in Rassie’s current coaching ticket.

The Dubs March On

Con O’Callaghan to score. That was a four-point turnaround and try as they really did Kildare could not make up the deficit. Dublin were very impressive and like Kerry they must wait for an opposition from the back door. It may not be Kerry and Dublin in the final, but they are kept apart and look odds on to make it to the final. Kerry will play their quarter-final on July 30.

ALL SET FOR BIG RACES In excess of 2,400 athletes are all set to go tomorrow in The Gleneagle Run Killarney half-marathon and 10k races. The half-marathon will start at Moll’s Gap and will wind its way downhill to The Gleneagle. It certainly is scenic but it will be very tough because it’s mainly downhill and that is very hard on the ankles. There are entries from 15 countries. Motorists should note that there will be road closures in operation in the morning. Theses notices are well advertised along the race routes.

COUNTY LEAGUE SNIPPETS Templenoe 0-7 Dr Crokes 0-12 Templenoe hosted the All Ireland Club Champions in a match played in wet and misty conditions last Saturday evening. Dr Crokes, who played with the wind in the first half, raced into a four-point lead with scores from Kieran O’Leary and Colm Cooper, before Daithi Casey added two frees. During this time, Templenoe were struggling to find a way through the Crokes defence and had numerous attacks intercepted, before Martin Reilly eventually opened their account with a point from close range in the 11th minute. The visitors then extended their lead with both midfielders, Paul Clarke and Alan O’Sullivan, splitting the posts to put them 0-6 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the first quarter. Clarke almost followed this up with a goal, but his shot rocketed against the crossbar. However, the Crokes maintained control and soon after the evergreen Colm Cooper and Paul Clarke popped over two more points to add to their tallies. Yet Templenoe did finish the half well, with Teddy Doyle successfully landing two 45s over the bar to leave the half-time score Templenoe 0-3, Dr Crokes 0-8. The home side started the second half brightly with a great score from a tight angle through Brian Crowley. With the drizzle getting heavier, Dr Crokes replied with a well-taken point from their nippy corner back Brian Fitzgerald. However, Templenoe continued to rally and, in the eighth minute, Stephen O’Sullivan was put through on goal, only to be fouled just outside the box. Brian Crowley converted the resultant free. Then Killian Spillane added another free, to put just a goal between the sides midway through the second half. There

However, I think this would be a huge retrograde step Munster who will want to continue the success that Rassie brought to the province. These two are Munster through and through, however neither have enough experience to assume the top job. Another decade at the top levels of European Rugby will certainly help them. Other names such as Paul O’Connell who is involved at the Munster Academy and Ronan O’Gara who is involved at French outfit Racing 92 are also being put about. It is seriously doubtful that either will take the job as they also lack the relevant experience at the moment. For me the likes of Andy Farrell needs to be given serious consideration. With he experience with England, Ireland and the Munster set up already, never

was no way though that Dr Crokes, the masters of ball retention, were going to let this game slip. Their patient play saw them tag on three more points through the boots of Shane Doolan, Daithi Casey and David O’Leary to close out the game, before Killian Spillane got a consolation score for Templenoe. The appearance of a live hare who ran the length of the pitch in the second half was probably the most exciting event in the game. Rathmore beat Dingle 2-9 to 1-11 to stay in second place in division 1.

Killarney Legion 1-12 Currow 1-12 A draw the final result which was probably fair, even though both sides will have felt they could have snatched it. Currow were very thankful to Dan O’Shea who scored 7 points (5f) and a well-struck penalty from Mike McCarthy with just five minutes left on the clock. Pa McCarthy then gave Currow the lead for the first time but they were to be denied by Conor Keane with an equaliser on the stroke of time. Indeed the same player returned 1-6 for the Legion and his goal was right out of the top drawer dancing his way through the defence at an angle before unleashing a powerful finish to the net. The win keeps The Legion on course for promotion and maintains their unbeaten run in the league this year.

Gneeveguilla 0-11 Na Gaeil 0-12 The away team had the better start racing into fivepoint lead after ten minutes with scores from David Brazil and the impressive Dave Culloty, Gneeveguilla rallied scoring three unanswered points from DJ O’Connor, Padraig Doyle and Padraig O’Sullivan, Na Gaeil, got the next few scores. Gneeveguilla answered back with two scores leaving just one point between the sides going in at the break, halftime score Gneeveguilla 0-06 Na Gaeil 0-07. Gneeveguilla levelled it up early in second half from a Fergus McAuliffe score. Na Gaeil went on to score the next four points. Darragh Carmody and Andrew Barry did the scoring. Gneeveguilla rallied back late in the game and got the lead down to the smallest margin with seconds left on the clock. Gneeveguilla had one last chance but could not take it leaving Na Gaeil winners by just that one point.

Laune Rangers 2-10 Fossa 2-8 JUNIOR SEMI-FINAL The venue for Kerry’s All Ireland Junior Football Semi Final with Leitrim has been confirmed the game will go ahead in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick tomorrow Saturday, July 22, at 3pm as a curtain raiser to the Round 4 Qualifier tie between Mayo and Cork which has a 5pm throw-in.

mind the British and Irish Lions, he must be a serious contender if Munster have any aspirations for future success and building on Rassie’s work to date. Often coined the silly season, the next few weeks will be interesting as everyone and anyone with any decent coaching experience will get linked to the new job. Rassie will stay on until Christmas and will help locate a suitable successor, however, this could prove disruptive to the team as they face into a difficult pool in the European Cup. For all we know at the moment, there could be two South African teams and a team from the USA competing in a two tier PRO 12, if the rumours are to be believed, so the new Director of Rugby will have their work cut out for themselves.

Lee O’Donoghue

Glenflesk forward Lee O’Donoghue talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, his summer in Boston and a very ambitious goal

Hi Lee. Thanks for talking to us. Not a bother, Adam. How’re things in the States? Good now. I’m getting a great tan out here. Some people are even mistaking me for Trevor Wallace (Twiggy). What’s the football like over? Very high standard. You have to be at your best every week to keep up with the fast play and the heat. How would you rate Glenflesk’s year so far? 8.5/10. If it wasn’t for being out of the Intermediate it’d be higher. What are your goals for the rest of the year? To become as famous as David Clifford. All the best. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Pádraig Healy. Bad driver. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? Switching it over to Shannon Blues here in Boston since everyone in the house is on it, Darragh Shea (Ballydonoghue). Who’s the biggest moaner? Pádraig Healy. Who’s the worst-dressed? Kieran O’Mahony (Larsson) even though his mother Liz tries her best. Who spends the most time in the gym? Steve Bun, the créatúr. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Glenflesk this year, who would it be? The obvious choice is Pat Dunne! Joke. Séamus Moynihan. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? It’s a tough choice between David Clifford and Kieran Hurley (Pat’s). Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Dan O’Brien. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I wouldn’t but if I transferred it would be to Shannon Blues. “When you’re blue, you’re blue.” What’s your proudest sporting moment? Winning the Hogan Cup with the Sem in 2016. And the most embarrassing? My father being sent to the stands even though he’s part of the management. If you had to compare yourself to a professional

athlete, who would it be? If I did that I’d be slated in the group chat. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather and AJ. What are your five favourite sports in order? 1) Football, 2) Football, 3) Football, 4) Football, 5) Football. Good answer. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Lacrosse.

SpongeBob What’s the best sporting moment of all time? The Millennium Cup win by Glenflesk. Do you have any nicknames? SpongeBob SquareHead. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Snapchat. Who’s your favourite snapper? Darragh Shea. Not for the snaps he sends but for the snaps I take of him. There’s a few wild videos! What’s your most-used emoji?

What’s the best show on TV? Don’t watch TV. What’s your favourite song at the moment? ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheeran, covered by Kieran Hurley. What would you sing at karaoke? ‘Glenflesk of You We Are Proud’ or ‘We Want Sam Maguire’ by the Border Boys. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Ollie ‘The Hobbit’ Favier. He’ll be delighted with that. What would you have for your last meal? Roast chicken dinner by the mother. Just chicken though. She can’t make mash properly. Controversial! Who would play you in a movie about your life? Tom Hardy. And last one: can you tell me a joke? Peter McCarthy. Thanks Lee! Not a bother man.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club

Club Captain Declan McCarthy will be able to reflect on the National Interclub Competitions for 2017 in the certain knowledge that all of the teams that represented our Club at every level did us proud, and the year was littered with very near misses, at mostly all levels. The Clubs last two teams have now gone out of their respective competitions. Killarney were showing great promise early on, when they were up in the first 4 matches, but the bounce of the ball started to go against us, and we never recovered that early momentum. Donie and Eddie MacSweeney easily won their top match by 5/3. As the afternoon wore on it became obvious that the 2nd match with Dermot Roche and Barry Duggan involved and the 3rd match with Pat Fleming and Donagh O’Mahony involved were the crucial matches as we were conceding the 5th match as Brian Holden and John O’Mahony had gone 5 down early on in the 2nd nine holes. Unfortunately, we were to lose both matches on the 18th green, and despite a very brave battle in the 4th match which was called in from the 18th green when Paudie Sheahan and Joe McCarthy stood at 1 up. We must remember that this was Thurles 4th successive final appearance, and their 2nd successful one. Killarney had beaten Shannon in the morning semi-final by a margin of 4 matches to 1 with Brian Holden holing a difficult chip from 40 feet to win their match by a margin of 3/2 after earlier successes from Donie and Eddie MacSweeney by 5/3 and Dermot Roche with Barry Duggan winning by 4/3.Our Club team in the Barton Shield were beaten in the West Munster Area semi-final by Tralee by a margin of 2 holes, Simon Gallivan and David O’Donoghue won by 1 hole

but Donal Considine and Ian Spillane lost by 3 holes. The next Club competition will be Lady Captain Amy Arthur’s prize to the Gents, which will be played on Killeen over the weekend of the 22nd/23rd of July. Club Captain Declan, on behalf of the Men’s Club would like to wish Amy Arthur every success for her Captain’s weekend.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Last Friday night we had an outing for juvenile anglers on Barryfinniy lake. While the weather could be described as inclement in the least, the anglers spent their hours by the lake in and out of heavy showers but not dampening their spirits. A good turnout of anglers resulted in a few fish being landed but we are hoping for improved fishing when we return for our juvenile competition there on Friday night the 11th August. OUR NEXT SENIOR COMPETITION:, the Batty O Brien Memorial Cup Competition, will take place this Sunday 23rd July on Lough Lein. Fishing commencing at 1030 and all boats ashore at 1800 hrs. - weight in at shed shortly afterwards. Entries can now be made to any club officer and entries will close on Saturday night.

Regular readers of Killarney Swimming Club Notes will need no reminding of the fantastic achievements of Killarney Swimming Club members, Mary Claire McCarthy and Antoinette O’Leary, in the Special Olympics Regional Advancement Competition in UL on the 27th of May, nor of how Mary Claire went on to win the gold medal in the 200 metres freestyle and a silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle nor how Antoinette took gold in the 100 metres freestyle and silver in the 100 metres backstroke. However, what our regular readers will not know is that their successes in Limerick caught the eye of the judges and both girls have just been selected to swim for Munster in the 2018 Special Olympics Ireland Games to be held in Dublin from the 14th to the 17th of June next year!! COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION 1 – ROUND 8: Dr Crokes 0-12 Templenoe 0-7. We retained our unbeaten record in the competition as a result of our fivepoint victory over Templenoe. This game never reached the heights one would expect from the two high profile teams taking part. In fairness both sides were short a number of players but our strength in depth allowed us to be less affected than our opponents. This match played in the beautiful setting of Templenoe saw us getting the better start with four unanswered points in the first ten minutes. Both sides had a point each in the following minutes and this left us 0-5 to 0-1 in front at the end of the first quarter. We were on top in the first ten minutes of the second quarter, sending over three points without reply, two of them from midfielder Paul Clarke. Three minutes before the end of the half our hosts were denied a goal when our goalkeeper Johnny O’Leary made a great save. A minute later Paul Clarke had a near miss for a goal at the other end. Templenoe had the last two scores of the first 30 minutes, two very well taken 45’s. The teams exchanged points at the start of the second half. Our hosts had two points without reply to leave just three points between the teams 0-6 to 0-9. A good close finish looked on the cards but we took our chances better than our opponents in the last ten minutes, outscoring them 0-3 to 0-1, for a fivepoint win. Eight of our players got on the score sheet.

The second half started well for Fossa with Tadhg O’Shea scoring an excellent goal after 4 minutes, the game ebbed and flowed after that as the teams were deadlocked on several occasions, further points from Mark Dennehy and Donald O’Sullivan

Killarney Legion

CO. LEAGUE: Killarney Legion 1-12 Currow 1-12. A draw was probably a fair result at the end of this county league encounter but both sides will feel they could have snatched it. Currow came close with a converted penalty and straight away a point to nudge them in front with less than 5 mins. on the clock. However, Conor Keane pointed from 30m to earn his side a point as the clock ticked into injury time. Indeed, the same player was instrumental in a lot of what was good about the Legion and he netted 1-6 with his goal a particularly spectacular score as he danced through the defense before

unleashing an unstoppable shot to the net from an acute angle. The Legion had a period of dominance in the second half that could have seen them out of sight but on a couple of occasions didn’t convert that superiority onto the scoreboard. Still facing their first loss at home and in the league, they gathered themselves to salvage the draw that keeps them on course for promotion. Well done lads. Scorers - Conor Keane 1-6(4f), Jamie O Sullivan 3pt(2f), Jack O Neill 2p, Conor Culloty,1p. FIXTURE: Co. League Ardfert V Killarney Legion, Sunday 23rd.July 2p.m.in Ardfert.
