‘I will do my very best for Kerry,’ Editor's View
says Minister Griffin
Words: Eve Kelliher
Words: Eve Kelliher
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar with Minister Brendan Griffin.
PROGRESSION of the Macroom bypass as well as the future of Kerry Airport are priorities for newly appointed junior minister Brendan Griffin. There was a vociferous welcome in Kerry for the Castlemaine TD’s promotion this week to Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with special responsibility for tourism and sport. Minister Griffin said he was “honoured, humbled and privileged” at the appointment. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the people of Kerry, without whom I would not be here, for giving me this great opportunity to improve our county and country. I will do my very best,” he said. The Kerry TD was one of five Fine Gael backbenchers promoted by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Tuesday. The Taoiseach and Minister Griffin have known one another since their early years in Fine Gael. Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said: “I wish Minister Griffin all the best in his new role and I look forward to working with him on matters relating to his port-
folio and hope he will deliver on much-needed projects for Kerry.” Fine Gael Senator and Seanad Leas Cathaoirleach Paul Coghlan, Killarney, said the ministerial position was “a perfect fit” for Minister Griffin: “Brendan has been a colleague of mine for many years; he is a tireless worker and a very dedicated public servant. “His elevation to the position of Minister of State is a huge vote of confidence in his ability to get things done. Senator Coghlan added: “He is keenly aware of the benefits tourism brings to urban and rural areas as a result of his work on the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry. “He has also worked tirelessly on a number of sporting issues throughout the county.” Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Martin Ferris said the appointment was “welcome news for Kerry as we seem to have been forgotten down here by this government”. “There are enormous problems still facing the county and hopefully with Deputy Griffin’s elevation some of these will now be tackled,” he added.

New Song
Tom Lucey Hits All The Right Notes With New Song SUPER-TALENTED Killarney singer/songwriter Tom Lucey releases an eagerly awaited new track today. Tell Me Tonight is the title of the song, which is the first from Tom’s upcoming third EP. The artist penned the song last November, having been inspired by his stint as a competitor with Kerry Rose Danielle O’Sullivan on Strictly Come Dancing, which was staged in the INEC aid of Down Syndrome Kerry. Tell Me Tonight is produced by Brendan O’Connor, Little Dylan Studios, Faha, and Killarney-based dancer Kelly McDonnell also appears on the accompanying video.
Well-known musicians Kieran Healy and Cathal Flaherty perform on electric and acoustic guitar respectively with Patrick O’Connor on drums. The past year was a busy one for Tom as it saw the release of his second EP Untold Stories. Untold Stories was the follow-up from his debut EP Pictures of Us and was launched last July in the INEC Acoustic Club, to a sellout crowd. In December Tom and his band went on “The Untold Stories Tour”, taking in Whelan’s, Dublin, Dolans, Limerick, and K-Town, Killarney. A STORY that appeared in these pages highlighting the heart-breaking letter sent by Don Theiler to the people of Killarney really struck a chord over the past week, with people from across Ireland and beyond getting in touch to express how moved they were by the Seattle man’s words. This week, Mr Theiler followed his comments by saying he will not rest until there is better safety for those cycling through the Gap of Dunloe, where his wife Janet tragically lost her life last month. He feels the road through the Gap should have restricted use. Mr Theiler has sent a letter to the Department of Transport outlining a number of concerns he has with regards to road safety at the Gap of Dunloe and calling for action to be taken. Out of this heartbreak came some notes of positivity, as people were swift to comment on the sense of community in the town and on the heroic community work by Killarney Gardaí that often goes unnoticed.

Disney Characters In Town To Help Killarney Launch July 4 Festival

IT IS a case of Main Street USA in Killarney as the town prepares to celebrate its annual 4th of July festival, which runs on Tuesday, July 4, from 7am to 12 midnight. The festival, now in its fourth year, is shaping up to be bigger, better and more colourful than ever before with an exciting parade, barbecue, live music, street performances, fireworks and much more. The festival aims to celebrate all that is great about the US and to remember the years of legacy between the United States and Ireland. Festival committee member Ollie Favier said: “The 4th of July is, to a lot of Irish people, what St Patrick’s Day is to Americans. We have a longstanding and positive relationship with the US of A as so many Irish people have been welcomed into the land of opportunity and have laid foundations there. And how can we forget that America has introduced us to things like American Football, French fries and Friends! So what better way to acknowledge all of this than to celebrate with them from across the pond on their Independence Day.” The celebration will commence on Tuesday, July 4 at 7am with a “dawn chorus” of the Star-Spangled Banner performed by The Shire Male Choir and a ceremonial hoisting of the USA flag over Killarney Town Hall. The 4th of July celebrations will see downtown Killarney transformed into Main Street USA, with the town coming alive with street entertainment throughout the day. In addition, nostalgic movie lovers will get to watch the classic Back to the Future in Killarney House. And no 4th of July celebration would be complete without a spectacular fireworks display which will round off the evening at 11.30pm and light up the night sky over Killarney. Ollie Favier added: “This will be the biggest celebration of America’s Independence outside of America itself. We want to show our American visitors how truly appreciative we are of them and also give a nod to our loved ones over in America celebrating the day.”

Glenflesk And Firies Cross The Finish Line To Win Killarney Credit Union Prizes
WHEN Killarney Credit Union launched its “Your Club, Your Credit Union” competition it drew huge interest as new credit union members were swift to respond to its call to nominate a club of their choice. And Glenflesk GAA Club took a bow as first prize winner as it received €1,000 from Killarney Credit Union chairman Pat Delaney on Friday, with Firies GAA Club being presented with second prize of €250. Explaining the competition, Helen Courtney Power, Killarney Credit Union’s business development officer, said: “When a new member joins the credit union, they can nominate a club of their choice. The nominations for clubs are collated and the largest nominations
received wins the first prize.” The competition is open to all types of sports clubs – for instance, football, hurling, rugby, tennis, basketball and cycling. Membership of the credit union is open to all those living and working in the common bond of Killarney Credit Union. This includes Killarney and Kenmare town, the townlands of Fossa, Kilcummin, Glenflesk, Kilgarvan, Sneem, Kileentierna, Tuosist, Sneem and Firies. ‘Local People Prevented From Putting A Roof Over Their Heads’ A RECENT EU ruling in relation to planning as well as various clauses “are preventing local people from putting a roof over their heads”, according to Kerry County Council member Maura Healy-Rae.
Addressing the full meeting of Kerry County Council this week, Cllr HealyRae asked the council what it has done in relation to the matter. “I outlined that this needs to be dealt with as a matter of urgency as people are very
hurt over this as they feel they could have been refused planning permission unduly and it is adversely affecting local people from getting planning in their local area,” said Cllr Healy-Rae. Kerry County Council replied that a
high-level working group has been established by the Department of Housing to examine a recent European Courts of Justice ruling. Cllr HealyRae stated: “We need more clarity as to when they will report back to us.”

Dancing On Air To Celebrate Midsummer
THE summer solstice certainly set toes tapping in Killarney this week. There was a real feel of midsummer magic as Celtic Steps celebrated the occasion by staging two outdoor shows on Tuesday and Wednesday, transforming Killarney Race Course into a spectacular open-air theatre with the breath-taking scenery of the Killarney mountains as the backdrop. Some of Kerry’s most celebrated musicians and dancers whirled into action for the hugely popular event. David Rea of Celtic Steps said: “We have always wanted to combine the charm of traditional Irish music and dance with the natural beauty of our surroundings of Killarney so when the summer solstice coincided with such wonderful weather, we decided to make it happen.” Highlights of the nights included a stunning rendition of the Irish classic Raglan Road, as well as U2’s famous ballad With or Without You, the famous polka set, the traditional Irish brush dance and scenes of sensational freestyle Irish dancing by world champion Irish dancers, including David Geaney. The Celtic Steps team welcomed back David Geaney as it hosted outdoor shows to celebrate midsummer this week. Inset: David Geaney.

The five-times world champion Irish dancer reached the semi-finals of the renowned TV talent show where he captivated audience and judges alike. David, 22, said: “Being on Britain’s Got Talent has been an extraordinary experience and I’m grateful for the platform it’s given me to share my own take on the art of Irish dance with a wider audience. “It’s always special to come home to Kerry and I’m looking forward to my guest appearances in Celtic Steps in the few weeks ahead.” David Rea of Celtic Steps said: “It’s been really exciting to watch David’s journey on BGT and see him fly the flag for Irish dancing and for Kerry.” Celtic Steps, The Show, now in its sixth season, tells the story of Ireland’s cultural history through its love of traditional music, song and dance. Opinion
When Factor 50 Replaced The Raincoat As Must-Have Accessory In Costa Del Killarney A week of soaring temperatures saw many develop a liking for Mediterranean-style living, says Eve Kelliher WE COULD all be forgiven for thinking we had fetched up in some sun-seeker’s paradise over the past week. Saturday was deemed to be the hottest day of the year so far, and for once the Factor 50 was more in vogue in Killarney than the trusty raincoat. And forget about jetting abroad for your fix of Vitamin D – it was a case of welcome to Costa del Kerry, with exuberant waves of bucket-and-spade wielding families descending on the beaches en masse. In addition, a tide of sun worshippers swept over Killarney National Park, as anyone strolling through Knockreer, Muckross, or Killarney House Gardens or around Ross Castle will have seen, while schoolchildren leapt at the chance to enjoy class outside. Of course, being Irish, we had to be a bit contrary about it all – after all, it’s no fun if you can’t have a bit of a quality moan. “We’re not meant for this heat” or “we don’t have the right type of clothes” or “it’s impossible to sleep in this weather” were just some of the comments floating about in the balmy air or along hot-and-bothered queues at shop counters.
But I have to say, notwithstanding those cranky comments we all indulged in to let off steam, there’s no arguing with the fact that the sunshine galvanises us all into being more active. In my own case, twice over the past week a planned short spin on the bike expanded into an enjoyable 15k trek. Met Éireann says today early rain will clear into the Irish Sea during the morning leaving a cool, bright day with sunny spells and well-scattered showers. Temperatures will range from 15 to 19 degrees, in moderate to fresh westerly winds. Tomorrow is expected to be a bright and breezy day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Much of the country will stay dry but a few showers will feed across the country in a brisk westerly wind. According to Ireland’s National Meteorological Service the highest temperatures on Saturday are forecast to reach 14 to 18 degrees. There is some uncertainty regarding weather conditions on Sunday but it looks set to begin dry with some sunshine. So let’s keep that Factor 50 to hand for a while yet!
Being Irish, we had to be a bit contrary – it’s no fun if you can’t have a moan

Kerry Welcomes Ministerial Appointment
HOPES were high across the county that the new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar would deliver when it came to announcing his junior ministers on Tuesday. And there was good news for Kerry when Brendan Griffin was appointed as Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport. Kerry has been all but forgotten by the Government with huge problems facing the county in terms of infrastructure and in-
dustrial investment, so the promotion of the Castlemaine TD is very much welcome. Minister Griffin, was one of five Fine Gael backbenchers promoted to ministerial ranks for the first time during the naming of the junior ministers on Tuesday. As Kerry is widely regarded as the tourism capital of Ireland, it is hoped that this ministerial appointment will boost that sector and also that Kerry will be well positioned when it comes to sports funding.
Idiot driver…
MAYBE it was the heat, or maybe she was just in a hurry, but one spectacularly selfish, dangerous driver gave all others pause for thought on Tuesday. We have a habit of blaming so-called boy racers or indeed, young drivers in general, for all manner of ills when it comes to hair-raising antics on the roads. Which can be pretty unfair. I couldn’t believe my eyes when approaching the roundabout on St Anne’s Road/ Lewis Road on Tuesday, a very respectable-looking lady bent her head low over the wheel and revved like crazy as she proceeded to cut in from left, from her stalled
position on the Upper Lewis Road entrance to the roundabout. She blithely disregarded the queue of traffic that had the right of away approaching from St Anne’s Road. Nothing was going to stop her as she bulldozed her way forth in what looked like a candid camera moment. Fellow drivers could only brake in wonder at this bat-outof-hell acceleration. Seriously, what was so urgent or important that this irresponsible driver put all other road users in danger? We say, cop on. Our roads are treacherous enough without this sort of inconsiderate, ignorant behaviour.
Story Time At The Library STORY TIME for toddlers and preschoolers with their parents or childminder will take place at Killarney Library tomorrow, Saturday, June 24, June at

Hotel Staff Go The Extra Mile YOU’RE on holiday, you arrive at your destination and you realise you’ve arrived without your passport, mobile phone, credit cards and money. What to do? That was the scenario faced by an American couple that checked in to the Randles Hotel in the past fortnight. They had travelled to Killarney from Waterford and it was only when they reached the reception desk of the hotel that they discovered they had misplaced a vital piece of luggage containing the aforementioned items. The pair reasoned they must have left the bag at one of the filling stations they had stopped off at along the motorway. Randles Hotel front-office manager Laura O’Donovan told Killarney Advertiser: “The guests came in and were in an awful panic. Pretty much everything they needed was in that bag – wallet, passports,
Tidy Towns
cards.” Comforting the couple, Laura, from Spa, Killarney, ensured they were settled in to their room before taking it upon herself to do some online sleuthing in a bid to track down the missing luggage. “First, I got a Manor House Hotels map of Ireland and went back along trying to track what filling stations they could have visited. I then went on Google Maps and travelled the whole way back.” General manager and owner of the hotel Tom Randles rang the filling stations along the motorway. Eventually the team struck it lucky when they discovered the bag was at a filling station in Tipperary. Staff member Tomas Uchil promptly got behind the wheel and completed the mission by retrieving the bag, much to the surprise and delight of the couple.

Salmon Swims To The Fore In Lissivigeen RESIDENTS of Lissivigeen together with Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers were out in force to admire the area’s revamped roundabout on Wednesday evening. Yvonne Quill, chairperson, Killarney Looking Good, said: “The Lissivigeen roundabout has been relandscaped with the addition of a wonderful sculpture of a salmon as its focal point. The salmon sculpture connects with the nearby River Flesk, famous for its trout and salmon fishing. Additional planting will take place in the autumn to further enhance the roundabout.”

The Shape of Life Cover
THE SPA
JUST FOR YOU Glow
How Much Life Cover Do I Need? You’ll certainly need to consider enough cover to:
• pay off your mortgage;
• pay off other loans and bills;
• cover the income your family will need to live on.
Mortgage Protection
This is a very common form of life assurance policy, as it’s a requirement for anyone obtaining a mortgage. A simple Mortgage Protection policy will pay off the balance of your mortgage in the event of your death, or in the event of the first death where a couple take out a joint policy. Cover reduces as time passes, as you’re paying off the principal of your mortgage.
40 Minute Treatment of Choice: Lime & Ginger/ Massage / Booster Facial Light Lunch in The Garden Bar
Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Adviser, Eoin Liston, Premier Financial Services, discusses the characteristics of different types of life cover. For a FREE initial consultation call Eoin on 066 7185723 today.
• This is the usually the cheapest form of Life Cover. • Suitable for protection of Mortgage Debt. It may also suit cover for loss of income on death of working spouse subject to proper calculations.

Shine Tri Enzyme Facial & Taster Back Massage

Light Lunch in The Garden Bar
Spa Special Elemis Biotec Firm a Lift Facial - 60 minutes results driven facial. Hands on therapy with the science of bio-electric technology.
Level Term Assurance
This type of policy is taken out for an agreed term, eg. 20 years. It will pay a fixed lump sum in the event of your death within the term of the policy, or on the first death on a joint policy. Typically, a family will hold this form of cover until retirement age, or until the youngest child is old enough to fend for themselves without parental financial support.
• Usually the most expensive of Term Policies. • Level Term Cover gives the same level of cover throughout the term of the policy. • In some individual cases this can mean not enough cover in early years and too much cover towards the end of the policy.
Convertible Term Insurance
This type of life insurance allows you to extend your cover at the end (or at any time during with some insurers) of your policy without giving medical evidence.
€99
First 30 Readers to book this offer will receive an Elemis Travel Set worth €50 Each package includes full use of the Health and Fitness Club, Caldarium and Relaxation Room prior to and following treatments for the total pampering experience.
• Convertible Term Insurance allows you to extend your cover at the end of the term if needed. • This flexibility may be very important if you have suffered from ill health during the original term of the policy.
Each individual’s circumstances will determine which type of protection option meets their needs, but whichever route you chose, all it’s really about is putting life cover in place to ensure that the necessary funds will end up in the right hands at the right time, in both a cost efficient and a tax efficient manner. We advise that you seek professional advice as the information given is a guideline only and does not take into account your particular circumstances.

Killarney Makes The French Connection A TALENTED troupe of Killarney dancers and musicians will be taking centre stage in Saint-Avertin in France this weekend. The traditional Irish music and dance group, Echoes of Killarney, has been invited to play at a major Celtic event, Le Festival des Horizons, tomorrow and Sunday, where they will exhibit the best of local Killarney talent. Musicians Padraig Buckley, Tom O’Connor, Niamh Dalton, Mike Kelliher, Sean Kelliher, Geraldine Brosnan and singer Brid O’Shea will be joined by a host of dancers directed by Maureen Hegarty at this massive openair music festival, expected to attract a tens of thousands of
spectators this year. Maureen was invited a few years ago when Kerry Dances Ireland performed and the show was so successful she has been invited back. “Saint-Avertin is a twin-town to Killarney and Echoes of Killarney group is looking forward to visiting the town, meeting the locals and performing alongside famous folk artists,” said Maureen. “We will also be privileged to be joined by a delegation from the Killarney Municipal District including the town mayor. “We will be performing alongside some of the best Celtic bands in Europe! It truly is an honour.”
Reunion
Back To The Classroom For Students Who Are Planning Big Reunion
PAST pupils of Killorglin Community College are organising a school reunion in July to mark the two decades since they did the Leaving Certificate in the school. The reunion is for those students who started in the school in 1988 or finished in 1993. One of the organisers of the reunion, Helen Courtney Power, said: “The reunion is a great opportunity to meet up with people that you haven’t seen in many years and recall the days attending the ‘tech’, as it was known then. We have sent out invitations to the class of 1988, however, we don’t have addresses for everyone that did the Leaving Cert, so we are hoping that word of mouth will work and everyone will come along on the night to share in the fun.”
The reunion is booked for Saturday, July 29, in Nick’s Restaurant, Killorglin, at 8pm. A hot buffet and music will be provided on the night. Owen O’Sullivan, event organiser, added: “We have managed to unearth some great photos and videos of the class and we would invite the old class to bring any mementos they have to share on the night. A number of former teachers have also been invited to attend the reunion.” Further information on the reunion is available from Owen O’Sullivan on 087-7900985 or Helen Courtney Power on 086-3644113 or the Facebook Page Killorglin Community College School Reunion. If you wish to attend please RSVP before Friday, July 14.

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR To date The Gleneagle Run Killarney has athletes from 18 different countries competing in what is becoming an international festival of running. There are 24 counties from across the four provinces represented. Many running clubs and groups are coming to Killarney to take part in Run Killarney. Killarney town is looking forward to welcoming an estimated 2,000 athletes for one of the country’s biggest running events.
HERE’S THE LATEST TIPS FROM CHRIS GRAYSON, EXPERT HALF MARATHON RUNNER INJURY PREVENTION At the first sign of injury or niggle most runners have the same reaction: ignore it and keep training thinking it will go away. Taking the time to find and fix an injury before it becomes chronic will give you a better chance to train injury free. There are lots of great Physiotherapists in Kerry and are experts in sports injury’s especially running. Here are my tips on preventing injury. REST! A rest day is extremely important when it comes to avoiding injuries. You should have at least one complete rest day in a week along with a recovery day where you could swim, cycle, walk or cycle. Listen to your body, if you feel tired on a day where you’re meant to be doing a quicker paced run (speed work or farlek) then don’t. Run very easy or take the day off. WARM-UP / COOL-DOWN By warming up this increase the heart rate gradually and your muscles will be warm and flexible resulting in being less prone to injury. 10 minutes warming up would suffice and prepare you for the training ahead. Equally as important is cooling down, at the end of a run where your heart
rate was elevated to aerobic or anaerobic levels you should ideally spend 10 minutes or so running very easy or walking in order to allow your heart rate to decrease slowly back to its normal rate. GRADUAL INCREASE MILEAGE Don’t be tempted to increase your running distances or paces too quickly. Stick to your training program. The general rule of thumb is not to increase your running distance by more than 10% a week. After a hard run it’s vital that the next day’s activities should be an easy day. General rule of thumb is hard run/easy run hard run/easy run and so on. MAINTAIN / IMPROVE FLEXIBILITY A lack of flexibility is a big contributor to injuries. Introducing yoga or Pilates into your training plan can help gain strength and flexibility. STRENGTH WORK Many new runners don’t undertake any form of strengthening work for their legs, thinking that all the running they are doing will be sufficient. Strength training is essential for preparing the body for training and racing.

Time To Gaze Upwards Trevor O’Donoghue gives an overview of what to look out for in the evening sky
Tripping The Light Fantastic KILLARNEY dancers enjoyed a hugely successful weekend at the Fó Chomórtaisí Na Mumhan held in Limerick last weekend. Students of the Hegarty Irish Dance Academy arrived home with an impressive haul of medals, cups and trophies. “The Fó Chomórtaisí is important to our dancers who are making their way through the grades in competitive Irish dancing and it’s a stepping stone to the
Munster Championships,” said Lisa Hegarty. “While we compete at all levels, from beginner to world level, we emphasise that our school ethos is not all about competition. Dance is for everyone, whether you compete or not, it’s an expression and ‘every child counts’. We are all the same thrilled that the Hegarty Irish Dance Academy did so well in Limerick last weekend.”
Appliance Of Science I AM often asked about the identity of unusually bright lights that people have spotted in the sky. More often than not, it is one of the bright planets Venus or Jupiter, or the brightest star in the sky, Sirius. However, sometimes the culprit is not stationary, but a star-like light that moves across the sky, or a point of light that spectacularly flares up to become exceptionally bright before gradually fading again. The bright light that crosses the sky from a westerly to easterly direction is most likely the International Space Station, a manmade space ship in orbit around the Earth at a height of 400km. The Space Station isn’t visible every day, but its visibility occurs in bursts so it will be visible for a few days and then not visible for a while. It’s amazing to watch as this manmade object with astronauts on-
board drifts silently across the sky. Equally as spectacular, if not more so, are the flares. The flares are caused by light from the Sun bouncing off the solar panels or flat antennae of a particular type of communication satellite as it orbits the Earth. The satellites are owned by Iridium Communications and so the flares are known as Iridium flares. There are often four or five of these flares of varying brightness visible in an evening. On Monday, June 26, at 23:25:23 there will be a really bright flare in the west, 26 degrees above the horizon. It might be slightly different depending on your observing location. To see these Iridium flares and the International Space station you can search on the internet or download an app called Heavens Above which will give you precise times for your observing location.

Making A Will Dan O’Connor and Conor Myles, partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, present advice on legal issues IT IS always a good idea to consider the making of a last will and testament and indeed, more than likely, most people will make multiple wills in their lifetime. It is advisable to consult with your solicitor to discuss and formalise your instructions in the format of a valid last will and testament. You should ensure that your will sets out clearly and concisely what your instructions are and it should deal with the entirety of your estate and ensure that the document satisfies the formalities required, as set out in the Succession Act, 1965. Your solicitor will take your instructions, having had an initial consultation with you and will set out your wishes in the correct format to form a valid will. When you sign your will, it will be witnessed by two independent parties as witnesses in your solicitor’s office. It is important to note that the witnesses should not be beneficiaries under the will. You will also have to specify an executor, the person(s) charged with the responsibility to carry out your wishes and the will also and most
importantly provides for who is to get what and in what shares. It is important to note that if you have made a will and you were subsequently to marry, this automatically invalidates your will, unless it was made in contemplation of marriage. A testator has freedom to decide matters in their wills subject to certain restrictions and caveats which will be explained by your solicitor. It is always wise to discuss your wishes with your solicitor and update your will as appropriate and keep it current. It is important to review wills from time to time as circumstances change or as taxation rules may be amended or varied at intervening budgets. Kindly note the above the above is for information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice and should not be relied upon and independent legal advice should be sought in all matters. • Terence F. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Enda’s Outfit Pedals Centre Stage BACKWARDS-HAT Obama was a big hit on Twitter and recently retired Taoiseach Enda Kenny pulled off a similar look this week. Enda was spotted on Wednesday pedalling on a Dublin Bike, wearing a vintage Mayo tracksuit, teamed with a backwards cap and white plimsolls. Remember when Barack Obama said goodbye to the Oval Office? His holiday garb, complete with backwards cap and flip-flops, sent Twitter in to meltdown.
Now that Enda has retired, his post-leader outfit had a similar effect. Mr Kenny later took to Twitter to confirm he had been out on his bicycle and told his followers that he had been training for the upcoming Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, which he intends to do again, in aid of Derrynane Lifeboats. He also thanked his former Leinster House colleague, Green Party minister John Gormley, for introducing the bike rental scheme.
Donald Trump: Mexico Will Have Less To Pay If Border Wall Has Solar Panels
US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has said his planned wall on the Mexican border could feature solar panels. Mr Trump told supporters at a rally on Wednesday evening in
Iowa that a solar wall would “create energy and pay for itself”. He joked it would mean Mexico “will have to pay much less money” to build the structure. Mr Trump claimed as a candidate that Mexico would fully fund his impenetrable border wall but the Mexican government has rejected that possibility. The US president also suggested the panels would make the wall “beautiful” and then praised himself by saying, “Pretty good imagination, right?” The wall, which was a signature campaign promise, has not been at the centre of the White House’s agenda and construction work has not begun.
TD John Deasy ‘Out For Blood’ After Failing To Gain Promotion
Taoiseach: ‘Door Is Always Open’ To UK Reversing Brexit Plan
FINE GAEL TDs are attempting to appease Waterford’s John Deasy after the experienced Fine Gael TD was overlooked for promotion by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, according to the Irish Examiner. The TD is “out for blood”, and “bristling with anger”, say party sources. His friend and party colleague TD John Paul Phelan was forced to intervene and visit the angry deputy on Tuesday in his Dublin residency, as Mr Varadkar also made wider attempts to settle the mood among disappointed backbenchers who missed out on a ministerial post. Fine Gael sources now say Mr Deasy is “gung-ho”
TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR has said “the door always remains open” to the United Kingdom reversing its decision to leave the European Union. Speaking on his way into the opening session of yesterday’s European Council meeting in Brussels, Mr Varadkar said: “We don’t want them to leave the European Union, we don’t want them to leave the single market and we don’t want them to leave the customs union either. That is ultimately a decision for them however, and that may change.”
and has even gone as far as threatening not to support Mr Varadkar and the Government in any crucial votes in the Dáil. A number of colleagues confirmed this. Mr Deasy, though, declined to return media calls. Meanwhile, Cork’s Dara Murphy has claimed he was sacked as EU Affairs Minister as he had backed leadership rival Simon Coveney and was on the side of the former Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Dressing To Impress
In The News
THE heat wave caused some serious sartorial difficulties across the UK and Ireland this past few days. Joey Barge, from Buckinghamshire, decided he would wear a pair of shorts to work in a call centre. He posted a photo of himself wearing the dressy long navy shorts in his car on Twitter and posed the question, “If women can wear skirts/dresses at work can I wear smart shorts like so?” He answered his own question soon after, “Answer: nope, just been sent home from work.” Off home he went and donned a T-shirt dress, tweeting “What looks better” and expecting to be sent home from work again. But it seems bosses relented and issued an email stating that, due to the “extremely warm temperatures currently” men could wear “three-quarter length shorts” in “black, navy or beige only”. Joey called it a “partial win” and told the Daily Mail that his bosses said he looked a bit colourful in his dress so he could go home and change but he said he was “happy to stay” in it.
‘It Was Like A Scene From The Negotiator’ ARMED gardaí were called to a Dublin standoff last night. The garda Armed Support Unit (ASU) was called on to deal with an incident in North Dublin. A video clip, broadcast by a web user on Facebook Live, shows members with their weapons aimed at a property in the area.
A garda spokeswoman confirmed that the ASU were joined at the location by trained negotiators at around 9pm. She added: “There has been a successful conclusion to the incident.” It is reported gardaí had arrested a man and a weapon, believed to be an imitation, was seized.
Taxi Passenger Dies Following Early Morning Collision A PASSENGER in a taxi has died following an early morning crash in Dublin city centre. The incident occurred at 1.40am
in the north inner city area of Summerhill, at the junction between Portland Row and the North Circular Road.
PICTURES of a woman and a Garda hand in hand went viral after being snapped by concertgoers at the Robbie Williams sold-out gig at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. As 50,000 people flocked to the venue, it created a bit of a problem for locals, such as this lady, who had to get a Garda escort home with her shopping. Yesterday, the woman in the photos, Mary Dent, an 85-year-old mother of eleven, rang the Liveline radio programme in the hopes of thanking the kind Garda who came to her aid. “He took my bags, and he held my hand, and there was an uproar! They were clapping and cheering, and I swear to God – I said, ‘Surely to god they’re not clapping at us?’” The Garda brought her to her home, but in all the excitement, she never got his name. Luckily the radio team were able to identify him as Garda Paul Barnwell and she was able to thank him (and present him with a sponsored hotel stay in Cork for his troubles).

RTÉ’s ‘Sound Of Satin Silk’ John Finnerty Retires
Irish Family Relocates To The Netherlands To Avail Of Medicinal Cannabis NEWSCASTER John Finnerty has retired from the RTÉ newsroom. Mr Finnerty left the national broadcaster in recent weeks. A source at RTÉ said that his retirement was a “low-key affair”. They said that Mr Finnerty had indicated he didn’t want “a fuss made”. Mr Finnerty joined RTÉ in the mid-
1980s, initially working in radio, before then transferring to news and current affairs. The 65-year-old is known for his distinctive timbre. He featured in a parody song in 2009, which compared his voice to “the sound of chocolate milk” and also to “the sound of satin silk”.
A CORK mother has travelled to the Netherlands to get medicinal cannabis for her sick daughter. Vera Twomey’s seven-year-old daughter Ava suffers from a severe form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome which can be treated with medicinal cannabis oil. Vera has been a vocal campaigner for the treatment to be made available in Ireland and has raised over €21,000 through a fundraising campaign for Ava. “The reason we have arrived in Holland is because the Government, the HSE, the neurologists have demanded that we would go to another country to pro-
vide evidence that this treatment would work for our daughter,” she said. Vera Twomey and her family have officially left their lives in Ireland behind and now begin a new life in Holland. A Go Fund Me campaign to help the family with travelling and living costs has been set up at https://www.gofundme.com/qcn2a-ava-barry “As you all know it’s about our little girl Ava. We need to leave the country for treatment she needs so badly and we are doing this campaign to cover traveling and living costs and when abroad,” stated Vera.

Galway meeting leads to Killarney celebration
S
CENIC spots in Muckross and Fossa formed the perfect backdrop for the photographs on Gráinne O’Gorman and Seán Moriarty’s big day. Gráinne, from Tipperary, and Sean, from Kilcummin, Co Kerry, first met in Galway at the unveiling of Sean’s brother Conor’s CD. Conor went on to take a key role as groomsman at their nuptials recently. The couple, who are based in Mount Oval, Rochestown, Cork, were married in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa, by Fr Joe Walsh and Fr John O’Rourke, Tipperary, and Canon Tom Looney, Fossa. The newlyweds held their reception in The Malton Hotel and both sets of parents, Teresa and Andy O’Gorman and Mary and John Moriarty, helped them plan the celebration. “Our wedding was the most amazing day of our lives,” said Gráinne. The bride chose her sisters Aisling Barry and Karen Quinlan together with her friend Denise Prendergast to be her bridesmaids while the groom’s brother Adrian Moriarty was best man with his friend Philip O’Connor joining forces with his brother Conor as groomsmen. Clodagh Barry, Serena O’Gorman, Olivia Radford and Ellie Quinlan were flowergirls. Photographer Micheal O’Sullivan captured the big day on camera and Marcus Egan was the videographer. Gráinne looked stunning in a gown sourced in Say I Do bridal boutique in Midleton. Breda Nagle of Sliabh Luachra Florists, Gneeveguilla, took care of the floral arrangements. The Liam McCarthy Cup and the Irish Press Cup were among the guests of honour at the wedding. The newlyweds honeymooned in Lanzarote. Gráinne works for a Cork city accountancy firm and Sean is a paramedic.

McCarthy Makes His Mark In Donegal
KILLARNEY rally competitor John McCarthy is very much in the frame for the top honours in the Irish Tarmac Championship following a tremendous result in the Donegal International Rally last weekend. From Lawlor’s Cross, Kilcummin, John was navigator for Declan Gallaher, finishing a very impressive second overall in the Donegal event. In May, McCarthy and Gallagher were runners-up in the National category in John’s home rally, the Rally of the Lakes, and they repeated that feat on
Gallagher’s home rally last weekend. They were to the fore throughout the event with their Toyota Starlet powering through the 21 stages before Sunday’s grandstand finish. A member of Killarney and District Motor Club, John learned his rally and navigational skills from his uncle, Eddie Murphy – another Killarney club member – and he is the latest young star to emerge in the town, joining the likes of Rob Duggan, Mikie Galvin and Noel O’Sullivan Jnr at the top end of the rallying game.

BBC TWO
Reviewed: Following Ophelia by Sophia Bennett THE Victorian version of supermodels, the “stunners” were young women – often working-class – who became muses for the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Sophia Bennett’s heroine Mary Adams is maid to the Aitken family, but catches the eye of the art set and goes on to masquerade as Persephone Lavelle.
Mary enters the artistic circles of the day as Persephone mingles with such feted muses as Lizzie Siddal and Effie Gray and meets artists including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais. While Following Ophelia is, strictly speaking, a young adult novel, Sophia Bennett’s lively prose makes her a writer for all ages. Unpredictable and unputdownable.

After disappearing on Nov. 7, 1969, Cesnik’s body was found nearly two months later -- but to this day, the killer remains unnamed. In the ‘90s, the case returned to the spotlight after one of Cesnik’s former students accused the high school’s chaplain of sexual abuse, and claims that she was taken to Cesnik’s then undiscovered corpse and threatened. Director Ryan White pieces togeth-

Killarney’s Place In The History Of Kerry Theatre I REFER to the article “The Play’s the Thing” (Killarney Advertiser, June 16), regarding the possibility of Kerry County Council’s invitation to national theatre companies to stage productions in the Aras Phádraig. Certainly, the Abbey Players travelled to Killarney in the 1960s and also travelled to Tralee in the early 1900s. So too did Anew McMaster, Lord Longford Productions (associated with the Gate theatre), as well as so many national companies, including the Louis d’Alton Players. In my lecture which I presented as part of the OPW Autumn Winter Lecture Se-
ries in October 2013 – simultaneously, my exhibition on Killarney’s contribution to drama and the theatre was on display at Killarney Library - I discussed Killarney’s incredible contribution to the development of local, regional and national theatrical infrastructure during the 20th century. The amateur dramatic movement played a particularly crucial role in the development Ireland’s social history and Killarney’s role in this resurgence was a formidable one. Killarney’s dramatic tradition stretches back to the founding of theatre societies in the late 1890s. My research concluded that
it was the making of The Dawn which encouraged the serious development of the town’s great dramatic legacy. By the early 1940s Killarney boasted two large drama groups and other smaller groups in outlying areas. Crucially, the town became the official centre of the Kerry Drama Festival when it was established in 1943 by Josephine Albericci. It was fast recognised as one of the foremost festivals in the country and as a result Seamus de Faoite and Josephine Albericci forged professional careers in Dublin. As well as in-house productions, Killarney also boasted incredible pageants
such as that which took place on Ross Island based on the legend of O’Donoghue of the Lake. Albericci’s vision back in the 1940s in founding the Kerry Drama Festival was very much influenced by her vision of Killarney as a centre for cultural tourism….perhaps it is time to continue the conversation. It is also a timely reminder that we not forget Killarney’s place in the history of theatre in Kerry. Dr Fiona Brennan, theatre historian, Via email

Praise for Killarney House and Gardens I’D LIKE to recognise the great job done at Killarney House and Gardens by all the grounds staff and gardening team. I’ve been walking my dogs through the gardens for several months now and quite often stop for a quick chat with the guys there – they’ve worked tirelessly through every type of weather thrown at them and the reward for us all is an amazing resource right on the edge of town. The formal area with the planting looks stunning whilst the arboretum and wild
meadow area provides a great contrast and a valuable home for all types of wildlife. I’m very much looking forward to the opening of the house and I’m sure the hard work done in there will be a credit to the staff too but for now I think the team working on the gardens deserve a pat on the back and the thanks of the community for bringing life to this once forgotten area. Well done to you all. Name supplied

Preparation
Knowing menu terms and cooking basics makes ordering easier, especially if you have special dietary needs.
Choosing a Restaurant
Think ahead. Consider meal options at different restaurants and look for venues with a wide range of menu items. We are lucky in Kerry that our eateries offer a stunning selection. Check online menus, if available, for nutrition information ahead of time.
Ordering
Be deliberate when ordering. Balance your meal by including healthier selections from all the different food groups such as lean protein foods, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Look for freshly made entrée salads that give you “balance in a bowl”. For example, entrée salads with baked or grilled chicken, beans or seafood provide protein along with fibre and other nutrients.
Eating out with children
Choose a restaurant that caters to children. This will increase the likelihood that a restaurant has a healthy children’s menu that includes smaller portion sizes and meals designed to provide ample nourishment for smaller bodies. For new foods, offer a bite or two from your order. Otherwise, let kids order their familiar favourites when they eat out. Calcium is important at all ages, but especially for growing bones. To get more calcium, opt for plain or chocolate milk for a beverage, or add a slice of cheese to their sandwich. Choose dairy-based desserts such as yogurt or a smoothie.

Kerry Ladies Defeat Cork In Munster Thriller LATE goals from Sarah Houlihan and Anna Galvin sent Kerry through to a TG4 Munster ladies senior football final against Waterford on July 9. Cork’s long unbeaten run of contesting provincial deciders, from 2004-2016 inclusive, was ended on Saturday evening as the Kingdom ran out two-point winners at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. Cork, Munster champions last year and current Lidl League and All-Ireland holders, were rocked by two goals in as many minutes, as Houlihan struck in the 57th minute before Galvin raced through for another.
In 2003, Kerry beat Waterford by two points when the counties last met in a senior provincial decider, before Cork won nine-in-a-row, and contested 13 successive finals. In this round 3 fixture, Kerry were ahead by double scores at half-time, 0-10 to 0-5, and the hosts also registered eight wides in the opening half. Both teams came into the game having suffered defeat to Waterford and while a draw would have sufficed for Kerry on scoring averages, Cork knew they had to win to make the final. Playing with the breeze, all of Kerry’s points came
from play in that first half, with Cork managing just two. Finn’s three frees kept the Rebelettes in touch but Kerry had much the better of it, forcing key turnovers inside their own half and creating clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities. Scorers for Kerry – S Houlihan 1-3, L Ní Mhuircheartaigh 0-5 (3f), A Galvin 1-1, L Rogers 0-4, L Scanlon 0-2. Kerry – L Fitzgerald; E Lynch, A Desmond, A Leonard; C Murphy, E Sherwood, S Leahy; L Scanlon, D Hallissey; A Brosnan, A Galvin, C Kelly; S Houlihan, L Ní Mhuircheartaigh, L Rogers.

RATHMORE will have a new pedestrian crossing adjacent to the Community Centre at the centre of the town. This will enhance safety for pedestrians said Councillor John Sheahan, who added: “The long overdue pedestrian crossing at East End is still awaited.” The Part 8 process will commence without delay at Beheenagh Bridge on the N72 and the realignment at Gortahaneboy
West will follow and is expected to be complete by early 2018. “These two projects have been on my priority list for many years and I look forward to the day when the Killarney to Rathmore road will be a safer route to travel,” said Cllr Sheahan.

n a g g u Jill D Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio highlights the CACI Eye Revive treatment
The Eyes Have It….
IRISH weather is uncertain but that sure won’t stop us wearing our favourite summer sandals and wedges! To get your hands and feet summer ready after the harsh winter months we’ve included some of our favourite treatments. Spa manicures and pedicures are a wonderful way to treat damaged skin and nails while indulging in a pampering treatment.
Spa Pedicures
The feet are soaked in a warm milky bath to cleanse the feet. A softening gel is applied to remove dead, hardened skin. The hard skin is buffed away. A salt scrub is applied to remove any excess hardened skin. A luxurious, moisturizing mask is applied and the feet are placed in heated wraps for 15 minutes. This allows the mask to fully soak into the skin. The feet are massaged to aid blood circulation and relaxation. Cuticles are then treated and clipped. The nails are beautifully filed and shaped. Your favourite nail polish is applied and conditioning oil is applied to cuticles once dry.
Hot Summer Trend
Sparkly toes will look fabulous in your favourite sandals or while lounging by the pool abroad. • Spa pedicures start from €45 and spa manicures are €35. To make an appointment call now on 0646630838 or 087-6215178. IF YOU have tired, puffy eyes, suffer with dark circles are conscious of your fine lines, wrinkles or hooded eyes we have the treatment for you. Here at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio we are launching the CACI Eye Revive treatment. The treatment uses a microcurrent to tighten and tone the sagging eye contour and also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkle. The microcurrent eye rollers are filled with the CACI Eye Revive Serum. The current, which flows through the machine, penetrates the serum deep in into the skin. Specific firming and smoothing movements are carried out by our highly trained professionals. This is then followed by a hydro eye mask, which help smooth fine lines and wrinkles. It leaves the eye area glowing. It is recommended that you first do an intense course of treatments – two per week for a few weeks depending on the client. A monthly top-up would then be required to keep them looking there best.

23.06.17 Retro Styling
VW’s 21st Century Kombi Project
VOLKSWAGEN has been teasing the world with the possibility of a reincarnated Kombi with retro styling ever since the Microbus Concept of 2001 but so far nothing has ever materialised. But the possibility is looking better than ever according to Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess, who recently announced that the company is working on a new MPV-type vehicle with retro styling cues from the T1 and T2 buses of the ‘50s and ‘60s, and that it’ll form part of the upcoming ‘ID’ family of electric vehicles – something that’ll surely keep the hippies happy. They’ll also likely appreciate the vehicle’s seating configuration, assuming it follows that of the ID Buzz Concept that was revealed at the Detroit show earlier this year, and which serves as the biggest bag of clues to date about the forthcoming bus. The Buzz has three seating rows that can be configured into an overnight arrangement with a double bed at the back and two lie-flat middle chairs complete with a selection of individual scatter cushions. While initial versions of the 21st century Kombi will feature an electric drivetrain, possibly with a driving range, between recharges, of up to 600km as per the concept with an electric motor on each axle, making it all-wheel-drive, and fed by a pack of 12 batteries mounted on the floor within the wheelbase. This layout also maximises interior space, which is what the Kombi was all about in the first place. We will have to just wait and see if VW rubber-stamp this project.

Penalties Looming Large For Alonso This Weekend
MCLAREN’S Fernando Alonso came close to scoring the team’s first points of the year in Canada before Honda inflicted its usual pain and disappointment when its power unit failed with just two laps to go. It was another bitter blow for the McLaren outfit and the Spanish driver, and
one which will likely lead to penalties due to and engine change for this weekend’s race in Baku. With an imminent split between Honda and McLaren on the horizon, McLaren has been linked with the return of Alfa Romeo to the grid as engine supplier to McLaren for 2018.
Alfa Romeo was last seen on the grid in 1986 with participation in Grand Prix racing on and off since the 1920s. What a spectacle that would be to see Ferrari, Mercedes and Alfa Romeo with the three best drivers in F1, Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton slugging it out for the championship.

Love Your Car WHEN you think about investing in classic cars, Ford might not be a name that instantly springs to mind. As savvy investors champion alternative commodities such as wine and watches, classic Fords have proved themselves another sound investment, according to Ford UK. For those who think there’s no money to be made from cars, think again — total growth over the past decade was 457%. This is a bigger increase than property, which has increased in value on average 152% since 2000 across Europe. And it’s
not just new supercars that command a hefty price tag and appreciate rapidly. The legendary Ford GT40 supercar accounts for the lion’s share of the most expensive Fords ever to be sold at auction but more attainable good condition classic hot hatches are showing impressive gains. A year ago a Ford Escort Cosworth sold at auction for €76,633 after originally going on sale for €25,000 in 1992. The average price of a Cosworth is now more than double that original price and the Fiesta XR2, which went on sale in 1981 for €5,839, has trebled in value since
2014, with the best advertised at close to €25,000. However for many collectors it is not about investing to make a profit, it’s the
realisation of a dream. Buy something that you love and will enjoy owning and any increase in value should be seen as a bonus.

Garden Magic Debby Looney
There’s A Long Summer Ahead Debby Looney checks out what June has to offer
In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
MATTHEW 10:26-33: “Do not fear” is the unifying theme in this passage which is set in the context of a mission sermon by Jesus, preparing his disciples for what lay ahead. He urges them to have courage in speaking his message and living his message, drawing strength from their trust in the Father whose care for us exceeds his care for hundreds of sparrows. How has trust in God been a source of strength in life for you? The body/soul terminology presupposes an anthropology in which the soul represents one’s real self and the body is the perishable shell. For Jesus the important thing is to be true to one’s real self, even if this does involve some material or physical loss or pain. When you have had that kind of courage, what was it like for you? There is no such thing as secret discipleship. It is in declaring their allegiance to Jesus that his followers will find life. They will be the losers if they hide their discipleship. Does this resonate with your experience? John Byrne, OSA, Veritas
Musings MANY people started planting their pots etc. very early this year, as we had such a fantastic spring. If you do need to replant after the deluge of rain and the stormy winds, try going for something other than Surfinias! I would advise Diascia, ivy leaved geraniums and Sanvitalia, along with trailing begonias and nepeta, for a long-lasting, and fairly weather proof display. There is a long summer ahead, and plenty of time for all plants to recover from wind damage, but I have learned a lesson in these last few weeks. It is never too early to put grow rings around the tall perennials. Unfortunately many taller plants, lupins, giant Scabious and Monkshood, to name but a few, have snapped at the base. I can only hope for a late show now! Make your own grow rings using willow branches and twine, or buy semi-circular links, which are versatile. Consider planting Sedum spectabilis varieties now, for a great show in late summer. Budleia should also be planted now, so it can establish itself and really bloom profusely. Bees and butterflies are cannot resist the flowers of Sedums and Budleias, so they are plants worth having. Another lovely hardy perennial for late summer flowers are Astrantia varieties, which also make great cut flowers. Softwood cuttings can still be taken now, especially from Osteospermums, fuchsias and many other shrubs. Take a cutting about 15cm long, cut it just below the node. Remove the leaves from the lower third, dip it into rooting powder and put it in a pot with cutting compost. Place the pot in a propagator, or into a clear plastic bag on a windowsill. Within a few weeks you should see new growth indicating success! If you are planting trees, or indeed any shrubs, I would recommend adding Mychorrhizal fungi, which are widely available. These fungi, (just scatter them into the planting hole), attach themselves to the roots of the plant and are very beneficial. They effectively create a secondary root system which is much more efficient at absorbing nutrients than the root alone. These fungi occur naturally, but due to nitrogen rich fertilisers, there is a sharp decrease in their numbers. Look out for lawn fertiliser which contains Mycorrhizal fungi, it is much better for your soil than chemical-based fertilisers. • Got a gardening question? OUR lives are lightened by people we can trust. We need to trust so much in life. We know the great pain when our trust is shaken by people we thought we could trust – parents, teachers, religious superiors, the church, friends and more. In the Gospel today Jesus tells us to trust in God, who
Support Groups
would not harm even a hair of our head. He asks and urges us to be people who would not harm another. We are worth this care and love just by being created. Like a parent or grandparent, or an aunt or uncle, totally loving a new child before the child is even seen, so God loves each of us. The sight of a starving child brings out our love and a desire to care. This is linked to the care of God: in this care and trust of each other, we find the trust and care of God, given and received, for “where there is love, there is God” (1 Jn 3:7). Just echo the word “trust” as you sit in silence: Let this gift and call of trust fill your being. Sacred heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. Lifestyles Poem Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on why people pursue a career in the arts
Art’s The Way To Do It EVERYBODY knows that a career in the arts is a very precarious one. It is very hard to forecast your income from year to year, month to month and even week to week. However, the beauty of this career lies in the same place as its downfall; in the unknown. From risk comes creation and this risk-taking is part of the life of the artist. You can create something that people love or you can create something that does not appeal to your audience. You can never be certain until you put your creation out into the world. The one thing that would make this life a little easier would be some sort of financial support, should you need it, for when times are tough or when you are in the process of creating but you have not yet reached your goal. I was delighted to see that our new Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, is a great supporter of the Arts,
but I was very very saddened to see that he has created a division in the Arts world. Those in the visual arts and writers are to be acknowledged as self-employed and permitted to seek jobseeker’s allowance. Those of us in the performing arts have not yet been afforded this same support. I ask, why distinguish between visual and performing artists? Are we not a country that last year celebrated the Arts as a whole while commemorating the events of 1916? I did not see any distinction between the two art forms then so why has it appeared now? I always refer to everyone in the Arts world as ‘an artist’. Why support one type and not the other? While those in power have thankfully, finally begun to recognise our sector, they seem to still have the blinkers on. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie
The Munster Final By Nicky Barry
From early morn they’re on the road from all over Cork, Once again into the lion’s den in the shade of Torc. Their memories are traumatic of the Fitzgerald Stadium, They have no love for the park, just tribal odium. And who could ever blame them, for time and time again, They raided into Kerry, and nine times out of ten, They headed back to Leeside with their tails between their legs, And hoped that maybe come next year, the Rebels would prevail. It’s a dream the men in red live for every year, That somehow in Killarney, their boys will have no fear. That they will tackle Kerry like Larry Tomkins did of old, And put manners on the Kingdom as the game unfolds. Cars are parked for miles around, as fathers with families, Make the trip up through the town, with banter and with glee. Although it could be slaughter, they are in no way peeved, But sing and bate their bodhrans, with craic until they leave. They are irrepressible, with hearts in the right place, For in Cork they love their sport, and put on the brave face. It wouldn’t be the same with Limerick, or the men from Clare, It must be Cork and Kerry, for good ole sporting fare.

1ST ANNIVERSARY O’SULLIVAN
In loving memory of Seån O’Sullivan, late of Coolcorcoran, Killarney who died on the 28th June 2016. Daddy, some days I hear your voice And turn to see your face; Yet in my turning...It seems The sound has been erased. Who will I turn to for answers When life does not make sense; Who will be there to hold me close When I’m feeling very tense Oh, Daddy, if I could turn back time And once more hear your voice; I’d tell you that out of all the daddy’s You would still be my only choice. Please always know I love you And no one can take your place; The years may come and go But your memory will never be erased. Today, Jesus, as You are listening In your home above; Would you go and find my daddy And give him all my love. Always loved and remembered by his children Rachel & Timmy. Until We Meet Again Those special memories of you Will always bring a smile If only i could have you back For just a little while Then we could sit and talk again Just like we used to do You always meant so very much Always will do too The fact that you are no longer here Will always cause me pain But you are forever in my heart Until we meet again Always loved and remembered by his wife Helena
POWERFUL NOVENA This novena never fails. Say it on the hour for 9 hours. Jesus who has said, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be open to you. Through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother, I knock, I ask that my prayer will be granted (Make your request). Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. I feel confident my prayer shall be answered. (Make request). This novena is to be said at the same time every hour for nine consecutive hours one day. Promised publication, never fails. F.D.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.M.

Athletic And Celtic All Set For Dream League Final The Blues and the Hoops will go head-to-head in the Kerry Premier Division decider and there are plenty of scores to settle, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan IT HAS taken us 18 games and nine long months of football to get here but the final that everyone was hoping for has finally arrived. For just the second time ever, Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic will meet in the league final. The first and only final involving both Killarney clubs took place in 2006. Celtic won that day on a 2-1 scoreline and 11 years on Athletic are still searching for the first championship in the club’s history. It has been a remarkable year so far for both clubs but ultimately we know that both of our seasons will come down to the next 90 minutes. Considering how poor we were in the 2015/16 campaign with Athletic, our performances this time out have probably surprised a lot of people. The
It has been a remarkable year so far for both clubs but ultimately we know that both of our seasons will come down to the next 90 minutes of football
truth of the matter is that fellas weren’t committed enough last year, myself included, and as a team we were very much just going through the motions. In the end, we were lucky not to get relegated. We picked up seven points from our final three games and stayed up on the last day of the season. This year things have been a lot different. Guys have been a lot more dedicated and I suppose we’ve been rewarded with a place in the league final. We also have a cup semi-final to look forward to. For Celtic, on the other hand, it has been business as usual. They’re well used to challenging for league titles at this stage and they’ll be hoping to make amends for last year’s final when they lost to Dingle Bay Rovers. Their run to the semi-final of the FAI Junior Cup really captured the imagination of local soccer fans and they were unlucky to lose out to Sheriff YC on the day. I’m sure that beating Athletic in the league final wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize for them.

If our previous encounters this season are anything to go by, Sunday’s game should be a cracker. We won the first derby 3-2 in March thanks to two late Paudie Clifford goals, and Celtic returned the favour in May with Tony Brosnan, Cathal O’Shea and Peter McCarthy all finding the target in another fivegoal thriller. Earlier this month we met again in the quarter final of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup and fortune favoured Athletic on the day, Mike Milner bagging the winner in the 90th minute. Celtic are a very well-drilled and talented team and it will take a huge effort to beat them on Sunday. I suppose we can take some confidence from our results against them already this season but they’ll be going all out to stake their claim as the best team in Kerry. It’s great for Killarney soccer to have two clubs in the final. I know it’s a bit disappointing that the game has to be played in Tralee but it would mean a lot to the players to see a big crowd back at it. Whatever the outcome, there are sure to be boisterous celebrations in Killarney on Sunday night.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy WE ARE just over halfway through the British and Irish Lions tour with a pretty mixed bag of results to show so far for Warren Gatland’s men. Losses against Super 15 sides the Blues and the Highlanders and wins over the Crusaders, the New Zealand Maori and the Barbarians has seen Gatland field varying squads which ensure every player has seen quality game time. This can only help in the selection of the Test sides to face the mighty All Blacks.
Previous Lions tours where the visitors won the tour matches by 50-plus points meant the Lions were severely tested in the tests matches, so you would have to have faith in the premise that they are gaining valuable experience in these fixtures. Either way a mouth watering Tour second half is in prospect and the All Blacks will provide a formidable test of Gatland’s ability to overcome the forced departure of Stuart Hogg. Interesting times ahead. Last week, the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy visited Killarney and we were delighted to bring the trophy to Aghadoe and to three local schools on the day; Cullina in Beaufort, Faha and Fossa National Schools. A very

eager welcome awaited at each school and it was wonderful to witness the children singing Ireland’s Call and to ask so many great questions about the forthcoming world cup and the trophy itself. We were even treated to an Irish version of the Haka on the day and the teachers have to be commended for instilling a love of sport in all the schools. Over 600 children got to take photos with the trophy. The Women’s Rugby World Cup itself takes place in Ireland this year with the pool games being played in Dublin, while the final stages take place in Belfast. Let’s hope the trophy finds a permanent home at IRFU headquarters for the next four years!

Bantry, and host school and tournament organisers, The Mon, Killarney. T he day culminated in a final pairing of Social Chríost Rí and St. Finbarr’s. The Bantry boys proved too strong on this occasion and came out on top in the first time in this competition, much to the delight of their supporters and teacher, Killarney native Brian Gleeson. At the presentation of prizes Mon Principal, Colm ó Súilleabháin, paid tribute to recently retired past pupil, Colm Cooper, describing him as an excellent role model both on and off the field. Colm Cooper himself remembered fondly all his schooldays playing football in the schoolyards and school field and felt it was there he developed his skills for the game.

Killarney Regatta Set To Make A Splash Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald EARLY on the morning of Sunday, June 25, the rowing fraternity of Killarney will flock to the Mahony’s Point course where the 232nd annual Killarney Regatta is being staged and the news emerging from all six competing clubs is that they will be competing in all the 17 races on the regatta programme. Killarney has a rowing tradition dating back to the early 1800s and what makes it unique in the world of rowing is that the town and its environs can muster a grand total of six clubs. Muckross who have been enjoying much success in recent years have a history dating back to 1800 and claim to be one of the oldest clubs in Ireland. Their neighbours in that region are Flesk Valley, established in 1923. Fossa, once known as Aghadoe Boat Club and established in 1893, draws its membership from the parish of Fossa while down beside Ross Castle we have Commercials, established in 1886. St Brendan’s were formed in 1895 and Workmen in 1920. All of the clubs enjoyed much success over the years.

At the Killarney Regatta launch at the Killarney Avenue Hotel, crews from years gone by were honoured, front, Marie O’Shaughnessy, John O’Leary Mary Looney, back, Paddy O’Sullivan, representing Sheila Cremin, Seamus O’Donoghue, Seamus Guiney, Mary Downey, Mary Moynihan, Rose Tangney and Mary Clifton. Olympics
While the annual Killarney Regatta may be the focal point of the rowing season the majority of those six clubs now compete regularly at regatta around the country and at coastal rowing events in both Kerry and Cork with the result that the rowing season now stretches from mid-January to late October and we must also taker cognisance of the fact that three Killarney oarsmen namely Paul Griffin, Sean Casey and Cathal Moynihan rowed for Ireland in the Olympic Games. This was akin to the feats achieved by the O’Donovan brothers from Skibbereen, which has helped to promote rowing as a sport in the county, As the cost of staging the regatta continues to escalate each year the committee is deeply indebted to its sponsors, who contribute generously each year and are also greatly indebted to the management of Killarney golf club who have made their facilities available since 1954 when the regatta was first staged on that course.
Ladies Races
Rowing has been growing in popularity among the fair sex over the years. This year’s programme will feature eight races for the competing ladies’ crews and the full programme is as follows.
Club representitives, front, Emma Canavan (St Brendan’s), Eimer Beazley (Muckross), Clara Wharton (Commercials), back, Siobhan Bynes (Workmen’s), Alison O’Sullivan (Flesk Valley), Sarah Doodey (Fossa). Pic: Dylan Clifford

Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship
The draw for Round 3 of the Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship was made during the Kerry GAA Night of Champions at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Tralee and resulted in the following pairings: St Brendan’s V East Kerry; Killarney Legion V West Kerry; Feale Rangers V Kenmare Shamrocks; and Dingle V South Kerry. The games will be played on the weekend of July 9 at neutral venues. The winners will earn a quarterfinal place. Dr Crokes, Austin Stacks, Rathmore and Kerins O’Rahillys are already through to the quarterfinals.

GOLF CLASSIC – JUNE 30TH: Following the success of last year’s Golf Classic, KRFC has something to focus the minds of those playing golf in KRFC Golf Classic at Mahony’s Point. Our Hole-in-One competition on the picturesque 18th hole is back! The first player who strikes a hole-in-one will win a top of the range bicycle from O’Sullivan’s Cycle worth up to €5,000! You could be cycling the Ring a few
days later on this state of the art bike! The Rugby Club has had a fantastic response from the business community and with over 40 teams of four taking part it promises to be a great day out. Great sponsors have supported the event from the off and with a mighty BBQ lunch midway through the golf, the back nine will be a formidable test! The club wishes to thank the many sponsors and supporters in establishing this event. An annual event on the local calendar, the club has received great support from all sporting codes in the locality again and this just shows you how stone mad for sport and ‘craic’ we are in Killarney. Fun for all those involved and who knows we may have a brand new cyclist in this year’s Ring of Kerry!

Killarney Athletic 2-3 Camp, in a fiercely fought cup encounter athletic will rue costly mistakes in favour of the opposition which ultimately decided who went through to the next round. KENNEDY CUP: Congratulations to everybody at the Kennedy Cup in UL, especially Killarney Celtic players Cian McMahon, William Shine, and Daniel Okwute, on winning the Kennedy Shield, beating West Cork 2-0 in the final. SOCCER TOTS: Soccer Tots runs from 3.30 to 4.30pm with Registration e10 and e2 for each training session. This is an 8-week fun and friendly introduction to soccer under fully qualified and garda vetted supervision. Results: Kerry District League: Killarney Celtic 7 Fenit Samphires 0. Celtic needed something here to book their place in the League Final, and obliged with an absolute master-class. Fenit were a good side, breathing hard on our necks in the league table, but they simply never got a look in against Celtic’s pace, power, and precision. Gary Keane opened the scoring, Peter McCarthy and Jamie Spillane both went close before Cathal O’Shea doubled our total. Peter McCarthy added our third on 25 minutes and Gary Keane, Brendan Falkvey, and Wayne Sparling linked up superbly to set up Cathal for our fourth before the break. Celtic kept up the pace in the second half, with Cathal claiming his hat-trick before Stephen McCarthy set up Stephen Hayes for 6-0. Before the finish, Cathal landed his fourth. Fenit emerged from the game with an awful lot of credit. On a hard day for them, they always kept their discipline and played good football all through, particular the influential Bill Mullins. DENNY PREMIER FINAL: Killarney Celtic v Killarney Athletic, Mounthawk Park, Sunday, 3.30pm. The exodus from Killarney to Mounthawk Park next Sunday will be comparable to Moses’ exodus from Egypt as the two best sides in Kerry this year prepare to face off in the biggest Killarney derby of them all. History will be made.... hopefully we can be the ones to make it, but it’s up to all of Killarney Celtic to make that happen, the supporters in the stands as much as the players on the field.
