NEWS Property Supply Crisis For Tenants Editor's View

26.05.17

And Buyers Sparks Concern Eve Kelliher talks to tenants, auctioneers and employers in Killarney who are feeling the pressure of the accommodation shortage in the town THE lack of rental accommodation and supply of properties for sale in Killarney has plummeted to a new low, with tenants forced to commute from surrounding areas like Killorglin, Milltown and Tralee to work in the tourism capital. The shortage of housing has prompted concerns among employers in the town – particularly as it is likely to become even more of a problem during the summer with seasonal workers competing for a very limited supply. “Killarney is currently experiencing a severe crisis in the availability of rental properties, auctioneer Ted Healy of DNG Ted Healy told Killarney Advertiser. “Over the past number of years the rental market has been heating up to a level not seen since the height of the boom.” Mr Healy added: “When the bottom fell out of the market in 2007 building essentially ground to a halt. The net result of this is that we now have at least two generations of buyers who have not purchased their first home. Now that the corner has been turned and we are experiencing property price inflation again, those buyers are all entering the market at the same time for

‘It Is Like A Casting’ SEEKING rental accommodation in Killarney is like attending a casting, in the words of tenant Leszek Szeligowski. Mr Szeligowski, who recently moved from Mullingar to work in Killarney, faced a situation similar to a hugely competitive audition when it came to sourcing accommodation. “I would find really nice houses online but this is science fiction – they do not exist!” he said. Delighted to find a suitable house, he rang the auctioneer and offered to take the house without viewing, as he was living 300k away at the time. “He started laughing and told me, I have 20 people who will take this home without viewing it!” He drove to Killarney to view the house and joined the queue of 15 people outside. “To rent in Killarney you have to supply a reference from your workplace, details of your position, a reference from your previous landlord, and sometimes even a payslip,” he added. “It is unbelievable. Then the owners or landlords are given a bundle of documents and choose the tenant they want. “Sometimes it can become a bidding war.” Another tenant told Killarney Advertiser how she lived in guesthouse accommodation for six weeks until she could secure suitable rental accommodation in Killarney. “It is a landlord’s paradise,” she said.

a very limited amount of stock.” In this case simple economics of supply and demand take over, resulting in significant price increases, added Mr Healy. This in turn heaps pressure on the rental market as supply of rental accommodation gets scarce. “Those generations who have not purchased remain in rented accommodation and as a result those units are not freed up to the rental market. Rental levels of units within close proximity of the town have increased by up to 35% from 2014 levels,” he said. “There is no sign of the upward trend abating any time soon – prices will rise further. Stock is needed to satisfy demand – in order to supply stock, building needs to be incentivised by the government.” Auctioneer Tadgh Gallivan agreed. “At the moment there’s very little in terms of first-time buyer houses around Killarney. They have a budget and the house has to come within that range. Builders aren’t proving houses within that range because of regulations.” Mr Gallivan added: “For auctioneers, our issue is not finding purchasers, it’s finding vendors to sell at affordable prices.”

Staff Forced To Commute EMPLOYERS in Killarney have reported how staff often have to commute from other towns to work in Killarney. Ciara Tierney, human resources officer with Tricel, Killarney, said incoming staff and people taking up work placement positions have faced considerable difficulty of late. “We have noticed a number of people commuting from Tralee and Killorglin due to the costs associated with renting in Killarney,” Ms Tierney told Killarney Advertiser. Cormac Casey, MD, KC Print, said: “Because specialist industries have to hire from outside, a downside of this is that successful candidates in some cases have to find properties outside of the Killarney area in which to live. Sometimes they question whether they would be better off in a city environment because the commute is the same.”

Words: Eve Kelliher

Shortage Of Accommodation Must Be Addressed SURELY if Killarney wants to develop to its full potential the accommodation shortage must be addressed? We need to have the infrastructure in place to ensure people can live relatively close to where they work, should they desire. As one employer said to me during the week, in essence families are being pushed out of the community and forced to set up home elsewhere, even when they source employment in Killarney. There is a danger Killarney could be turned into what is essentially a ghost town in community terms if this situation is allowed to persist. Policies could focus on the potential use of holiday complexes as a basis for boosting accommodation resources, for instance. It’s time for the powers-that-be to do something to remedy matters.

Tina In The Picture In London

Landlords ‘Have The Pick Of Tenants’ JONATHON GREENE of Killarney letting agency It’s4Rent.ie said once a property goes up for lease it can attract 20 to 30 enquiries. The surge of demand during the tourist season, with seasonal workers arriving in town, makes the situation “more intense”, he added. “The landlord has the pick of tenants at the moment,” said Mr Greene. There is a particularly urgent need for longerterm house lets, the noted. “That’s the really big issue. Everybody wants a three-bed semi close to town but they are just not there,” said Mr Greene. “That’s where the real pressure is.” As for a solution, Mr Greene said the Government needs to incentivise the private rental market.

KILLARNEY artist Tina Reed is showcasing work in a prestigious London art sale. Three of Tina’s paintings are now on sale in a gallery called Not the Royal Academy. “As my daughter says, it’s a posh gallery with a doorbell! I’ve been accepted for it for the last five years,” said Tina.

Killarney And Kerry To Elect New Mayors FIVE new mayors will take the chain of office in Kerry on June 30 when Kerry County Council and the county’s four municipal districts are expected to hold their annual general meetings. Because of voting pacts agreed after the last local elections, the names of each mayor and cathaoirleach are known in advance. While the title of mayor only applies officially to the first citizen of Kerry and of Tralee, many in the other municipal districts often continue to use the title of mayor for the position. Killarney Fine Gael councillor John

Sheahan will be elected as the new mayor of Kerry, succeeding Councillor Michael O’Shea, Fianna Fail. The new cathaoirleach of Killarney will be Councillor Niall Kelleher, Fianna Fail, who will take the chain of office from Councillor Brendan Cronin, Independent. Councillor Terry O’Brien, Labour, will be succeeded by Cllr Norma Foley, Fianna Fail. Cllr John Lucid, Fianna Fail, will take over from Cllr Aoife Thornton, Fine Gael. The annual general meetings are expected to be held on Friday, June 30.

Killarney National Park

Over Half Surveyed Not In Favour Of Suggestion Of 50 Cent Charge To Help Tackle Rhododendron

Would you support a tax of 50 cent for everyone visiting Killarney National Park to tackle the rhododendron crisis?

42% Yes 58% No ‘It Is The People’s Park’

Killarney Advertiser resident cartoonist Martin Carey gives his take on the concept of paying for entry to the National Park.

WHEN Killarney Advertiser columnist Anne Lucey suggested the concept of a fee or tax for everyone visiting Killarney National Park to help its upkeep, it sparked much discussion and debate locally. Anne was writing in January in the wake of a call from the Irish Wildlife Trust for Unesco to strip the National Park of its biosphere reserve status, and in her column in these pages said: “A local tourism tax would solve much. Let us say a contribution of 50 cent for people who take jaunting car trips in the park, who take boat trips, who sleep in beds and eat in restaurants, take part in charity runs, cycling tours and walking tours, to go directly to the park

to finance employing people to manage the woodlands and deer, tackle the ivy and clean up the beauty spots. It should bring in a half a million euro.” So, this week, Killarney Advertiser asked people to imagine such a scenario and organised an online survey asking the following question: “Would you support a tax of 50 cent for everyone visiting Killarney National Park to tackle the rhododendron crisis?” The results showed that 42% were in favour with 58% against the idea of a charge for entry to the National Park.

....

WHILE there is widespread agreement in Killarney that something needs to be done about tackling rhododendron, the general consensus was that a charge to use the park would be impractical and not in keeping with the ethos of Killarney National Park. Pat Dawson, National Parks & Wildlife Service Regional Manager “The ethos of Killarney National Park, which started with the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park, is that it should be free to the people. That’s the policy of Killarney National Park. In 1932, when the Park was donated to the State the ethos was that it should be free for everybody to enjoy.” Councillor Brendan Cronin, Cathaoirleach, Killarney Municipal District “The beauty of Killarney National Park is that it is unique and it is the people’s park. Yes, rhododendron is a huge problem but I would disagree with Anne Lucey’s suggestion of a charge as I think a charge could work negatively. However if one were to put a donation box out there, maybe it would be a different story. In relation to the rhododendron, I would have to commend the Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal who are doing tremendous work.” Patrick O’Donoghue, Chairperson of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation “As chairperson of the Kerry branch of the IHF, I would feel that a charge would give out negative connotations – not just from a tourism point of view but because of the fact that the National Park is used by everyone, for everything from sporting to social events. Where would you start and where would you stop with something like this? It would be very difficult to administer from a social amenity point of view.” Paul O’Neill, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce “Killarney Chamber’s representative on Killarney National Park Liaison Committee has over the last two years proposed that the National Parks & Wildlife Service carry out a study on the possibility of charging for parking at Muckross House. Such a study was to determine the potential income from such charges and that all income earned from parking be ring-fenced for re-investment in Killarney National Park in addition to the capital and current budgets that applied pre-recession. This proposal has been unanimously adopted by the liaison committee in September 2016 and communicated to NPWS management.”

ADVICE ON RUNNING GEAR FROM CHRIS GRAYSON, EXPERT HALF MARATHON RUNNER Sports shoes are probably the most important piece of fitness equipment you’ll buy, so it’s vital to pick the right pair. A person’s left and right foot can be as much as a half to a full size in difference. Forces on the feet can be one and a half times our body weight when walking and two to three times when running. It is crucial that your shoes fit correctly to prevent many foot conditions and alignment problems.

THE RIGHT FIT

Only you can tell if your shoes fit prop-

erly. If they aren’t comfortable, don’t buy them! Don’t plan on shoes stretching with wear, because feet spread with age. Have your feet measured every time you buy shoes. Both feet should be measured as they are often different sizes. Always buy shoes for the BIGGEST foot. Go shoe shopping late in the afternoon. Feet swell to their largest then. Size depends on shoe make and style, too. Don’t insist you always wear one size if the next feels better.

PERFECT PAIR To ensure that you are wearing the

correct pair of runners, it is important to have your gait analysed. All good sports shops offer video and gait analysis.

REPLACE OLD RUNNERS Running shoes should be replaced every 300 to 500 miles. Wear and tear in runners may not be apparent to the naked eye. Places are filling up fast make sure to register online www.runkillarney.com or register by calling into O Sullivan Outdoor Shop, Killarney.

Maher’s Meats Celebrates

Ninth Anniversary

St Brendan’s College Fayre Day From sport and music to delicious food, the Sem’s big day out on Sunday had it all, says transition year student Donal Lucey LAST Sunday, St Brendan’s College hosted its third annual “fayre day”. The idea behind the event was to celebrate St Brendan’s Day with not only the pupils of the school, but to celebrate with the friends and families of the Sem. The fun and festivities began in the Sem field beside St. Mary’s Cathedral on Port Road at 1pm. One of the highlights of the fayre was the sport and St Brendan’s, being a school famous for sport, had an abundance of talent on show. The future stars of Kerry football were showcasing their skill in the Beckett/O’Connor and John Doyle Cup finals. Everyone could get involved in other events such as the table tennis competitions, beanbag challenge and tug of war. If sport wasn’t for you, then the music scene at the fayre day was

top-class, with exceptional performances from Tom Lucey, 2 Mikes, Box Man Jim, Jules Hall and Neily O’Connor. Sem duo Seán O’Shea and Fionnbharr Hickey made an appearance with Aoibhe O’Connor. The stalls on display were also an attractive reason to call down to the Sem last Sunday. With a delicious barbecue, sweet treats from

Aunt Nellie’s Sweet Shop and homemade goodies at the bake sale, nobody was going to go home hungry. There was a wide range of goods to purchase, from Forever Perfect Frames to secondhand football boots and jerseys. Once again, St Brendan’s Fayre Day was a brilliant event with something for all ages to enjoy.

You have to set up this type of plan yourself, arrange to pay your own contributions and claim tax relief yourself each year. Personal Retirement Savings Account (PRSA) A Personal Retirement Savings Account (PRSA) is a type of personal pension policy that is more flexible than the traditional personal pension plan.

Anyone up to the age of 75 can take out a PRSA and you don’t have to be earning an income to do so. If you are employed, by law your employer must offer you a standard PRSA if: • there is no Employer Pension plan in place through your job • you are not eligible to join your employer pension plan within the first six months of your service • you are eligible to join your personal pension plan but only for death-in-service benefits. You can also set up a PRSA if you wish to make Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC’s) but are not able to do so through your employer’s pension plan. If you contribute to a PRSA set up by your employer, you get tax relief automatically and don’t have to claim it yourself. Your employer may also contribute to your PRSA but does not have to.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE?

Personal Pension Plans A Personal Pension Plan is a private pension policy that is managed for you by a life assurance company or investment firm. Anyone who is self-employed or who earns an income, but who can’t join an Employer Plan, can start a personal pension plan. Or if you are a member of an Employer Pension but also earn money somewhere else, you may be able to contribute to a personal pension plan.

All personal pension plans and PRSAs are set up as Defined Contribution Plans. As a result, the value of your pension at retirement is not guaranteed and will depend on the level of contributions you make, the growth of your pension fund and the charges you pay. • With a personal pension plan or PRSA you have to decide how much to contribute in order to give you the income you will need when you retire. • It is important to review your personal pension plan or PRSA regularly to make sure you are contributing enough to get the pension you need. • Even if your contributions are index-linked, you may still need to increase your contributions so that your overall fund is large enough to give you a reasonable pension at retirement.

Muckross Strengthens Its Links With California

THE sun shone for a group of 40 from the Filoli Estate in Woodside, California, on the occasion of their visit to Muckross House recently. The group was composed mainly of interested member/volunteers, most of who knew of Muckross but had never been there. The group included the Executive Director, Kara Newport, Collections Manager, Julie DeVere, Centennial Committee member Emily Newell and present and past presidents of their Board. Filoli was built for Mr and Mrs William Bowers Bourn, prominent San Franciscans whose chief source of wealth was the Empire Mine, a gold mine in California. Mr Bourn was also owner and president of the Spring Valley Water Company whose property comprised Crystal Springs Lake and the surrounding lands. Because of its similarity to the country setting of Muck-

ross, the Bourns wanted to have an estate built along Crystal Springs Lake. The Bourns’ daughter, Maud, married Arthur Rose Vincent of Summerhill, Cloonlara, Co. Clare, in March 1910. In November 1910, William Bowers Bourn purchased Muckross House and its surrounding 11,000 acres for their daughter and new son-in-law. On February 12, 1929, following an Atlantic crossing on route to California with her two children to visit her ailing father, Maud Vincent died in New York City of pneumonia. Her body was brought across country by train to Filoli and she was buried in a cemetery overlooking the house. In 1932 the Bourns and their sonin-law, Arthur Vincent, presented Muckross House and the surrounding 11,000 acres of land to the Irish Nation as a memorial to Maud Bourn Vincent. The estate became the first national park in Ireland.

London Calling For Perfect Proposal Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Emily Doran Photography

F

RIENDSHIP turned to love for Paula Murphy and Patrick Fitzgerald who got engaged in London during Easter 2016. Paula and Patrick were wed a year later in St Mary’s Cathedral in the bride’s native Killarney by Fr Kieran O’Brien and held their reception in The Malton Hotel. They had plenty of help from both sets of parents Antoinette and Ger Murphy and Breda and Tom Fitzgerald, when it came to organising their dream big day. Photographer Emily Doran captured the occasion on camera, including a photo-shoot at Ross Castle. Emily’s husband Aodhagán O’Riordan of One Love was the videographer. Sandra Rice was chief bridesmaid while Michelle Fitzgerald and Caroline Murphy were bridesmaids. “Sandra is my best friend from school, Michelle and I trained together as nurses, and Caroline is my cousin,” said the bride. “Pa and I met through Michelle, we were friends for years and got together five years ago.” The groom’s pals lent their support also, with Shane Monaghan as best man and Morris

Fehilly joining forces with Pa’s cousin Padraig Fitzgerald as groomsman. The couple got engaged last Easter in London’s Hyde Park. “Our wedding day was perfect, the sun shone at the end of a very dull week, we were so lucky,” said the bride. “We were joined by family and friends and couldn’t have asked for more. What made the day extra special was a visit to my nana Nora Murphy for a hug and a photo. Nan is 92 and wasn’t feeling well enough to attend the wedding, but I could pass my wedding day without seeing her.” Paula looked stunning on her big day in a dress sourced in Finesse bridal boutique in Listowel. The bridal hair styling was by Denise Casey of Ruby Tuesday with makeup by Niamh Sweeney. The wedding band The Usual Suspects ensured dancing continued long into the night. The newlyweds honeymooned in South Africa with a stop in Dubai on the way home. The bride and groom, who is from Burncourt, Co Tipperary, will reside in Cullenaugh, Co Tipperary. Paula is a clinical nurse specialist in diabetes and Pa is a bank official with AIB.

Bond Star Roger Moore Has Died At 89 FORMER James Bond star Sir Roger Moore has died in Switzerland after a short battle with cancer. The family paid tribute to Mr Moore’s acting and humanitarian work with a special mention to the work he did for UNICEF. He became the third and longest-serving 007 after taking over from Sean Connery in Live and Let Die (1971). He then went on to play the 007 in six more films, including The Man with the Golden Gun (1974); The Spy Who Loved Me (1977); Moonraker (1979); For Your Eyes Only (1981); Octopussy (1983) and A View To Kill (1985). He was also known for roles in hit TV shows ‘The Saint’ and ‘The Persuaders’. He also devoted a lot of his time to humanitarian work and became a UNICEF goodwill ambassador in 1991 and was awarded a knighthood in 2003 for his services to charity.

Donald Trump Meets Pope Francis ALL eyes were on the Vatican on Wednesday when US President Donald Trump and family members and political inner circle shared a private audience with Pope Francis. The burning question after the resulting photograph went viral was: Did the Pontiff smile when he met

President Trump? One image in particular, of a grinning Trump next to a stone-faced Pope Francis, has gone viral. But, as Time.com was swift to point out, that’s not quite the full picture. Evan Vucci, the Associated Press photographer who made this picture, said: “The mood in the room, it

Coroner Terence Casey Retires TERENCE CASEY, coroner for South and East Kerry, retired over the weekend. Mr Casey, a solicitor, became deputy coroner in 1994 and later became full-time coroner. Turning 70 on Saturday, Mr Casey presided in Killarney Coroner’s Court for the last time on Friday. He was paid tributes by gardaí, the jury, Kerry County Council and a representative from the National Union of Journalists. Suicide was the verdict in three of the four inquests at the coroner’s court in Killarney last Friday and the fourth

inquest was held “to allay” rumours in an east Kerry community that the deceased took his own life, reported Anne Lucey in the Irish Examiner. Mr Casey said the suicide rate was too high in Kerry; it is rising again and now involves an older age group than in previous years. He credited the late teenager Donal Walsh, who had spoken out against suicide, as a turning factor for young people taking their own lives in Kerry: “Since I started speaking about suicide, Donal Walsh made an awful lot of difference to young people under the age of 21,” he said.

Varadkar And Coveney To Go Head-To-Head At Hustings FINE GAEL leadership candidates Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar took part in the first of four regional hustings last night in Dublin’s Red Cow Hotel. They will embark on further events today (at IT Carlow), tomorrow (in Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe, Co

Galway), and on Sunday (in the Clayton Hotel Silver Springs in Cork), all at 8pm. The debates will be live-streamed on the Fine Gael Facebook page. About 21,000 rank-and-file members have a vote, along with 232 party councillors.

didn’t seem sombre. The Pope was smiling.” It is true that a photo editor on Wednesday would have experienced slight difficulty while searching for an image of both Trump and Francis appearing to be delighted in one another’s company. But those images do exist.

Trump said after the meeting it was the “honour of a lifetime” to meet the Pope.

Protest Outside Dáil Over Pension Cuts ANGRY pensioners held a protest outside the Dáil on Thursday morning over cuts to their pensions. Changes made by Joan Burton in 2013 mean 35,000 pensioners lose between 15 and 30 euro a week, especially those who took time out to raise families before 1994. Speaking to Newstalk radio this morning the protesters hit out at the cuts. “This is an absolute injustice. I am one of lucky people who retired

prior to 2012. Another said: “I am still working because of the shock I got when I saw what I was gong to get on retirement.” One former public servant was particularly angry at Leo Varadkar’s Fine Gael leadership slogan that he wants to represent those who get up early in the morning: “I’d have loved to be standing beside Leo ... I was in government buildings at 6.30am and reported for duty at 7 every morning.”

Manchester Attack: View From Killarney

Donal Lucey asks local young people about their reaction to the Manchester attack Q. After seeing the Manchester attack, would you be a bit hesitant or turned off going to a concert? Darragh Fleming “At the heart of terrorism is the desire to create chaos and uncertainty. I think that if we were to start living in fear we let the terrorists win. So, to answer that, I wouldn’t be afraid, especially not in Ireland. Amy O’Callaghan “Not really. If you’re living in fear that means they have got to you which is what they want so I just think taking each day as it comes is the best option and not to put off anything because of what happens in other countries.”

Seán O’Shea “Yeah, I would be hesitant to go to a concert like this one in the Manchester Arena for fear of a repeat.” Q. What message do you think it is sending out to young people? Darragh Fleming “The bedrock terrorism is built on is fear. I think we should look at it in a different light and young people should look at the people who assisted the affected in the situation as shining lights in dark times.” Amy O’Callaghan “I think they try to send out messages of fear and it works in some cases

Darragh Fleming Amy O’Callaghan but in others people chose to ignore it and just go about their daily lives, which is what most young people I know chose to do.” Seán O’Shea “At this moment in time, it appears that no man is 100% safe on an everyday basis.” Q. Would attacks like this and previous ones in tourist hot spots like Paris, put you off going on holidays or school tours to cities that have been targets for attacks? Darragh Fleming “Security is at an all-time high in these places. We are going to pass on

Seán O’Shea

someday, I think it’s up to us to make the most of the time we have and not let these attacks faze us.” Amy O’Callaghan “There’s always going to be threats wherever you go no matter what the scenario so no these attacks and previous ones won’t put me off going to these areas because of the fact that nothing might ever happen, so why live in fear.” Seán O’Shea “Yes, very much so. You don’t know when they will strike next and the thought of being in the middle of one of these attacks or even witnessing these ones is quite daunting.”

Manchester Attack: Two Homeless Men Hailed Heroes National Minute’s Silence Held A NATIONAL minute’s silence was held across Britain on Thursday in the wake of the Manchester attack. Twenty-two people were killed and 64 injured after suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated a homemade device at Manchester Arena on Monday. Manchester’s council invited people “to pay your respects to those we lost.” Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham was among the crowd who observed the silence in St Ann’s Square. Lord Mayor of the city Eddy Newman, council leader Sir Richard Leese and Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Warren Smith joined those in the silence at the square.

Mancunians have left cards, flowers and teddy bears at the site, which has become a focal point for tributes. Chalked out messages like “we will stand together, no fear one love” on the ground of the square have not faded despite the numbers coming to pay their respects and leaving tributes. City workers left their offices while others travelled down especially to St Ann’s Square, less than a mile from Manchester Arena, for the minute’s silence at 11am. People in suits, uniforms and causal dress turned out to pay their respects to those who suffered at the hands of the bomber.

Skellig Michael & Star Wars In Vanity Fair NEW details have been released about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney’s upcoming sequel to the hugely successful The Force Awakens. Vanity Fair has profiled the film and makes some big revelations about what fans can expect, including some stunning images of cast on location at Skellig Michael off Kerry taken by legendary photographer Annie Liebowitz. Directed by Rian Johnson, the movie

will be out on December 15. Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, speaks about filming on Skellig Michael. “When I read the script for Episode VIII, I went, ‘Oh my God, we’re going back?’ Because I said I was never going back,” he told Vanity Fair. He wanted to be dropped in by helicopter but added, “which is so clueless of me, because there’s no landing pad, and it would mar the beauty of it all.”

TWO homeless men have become heroes of the Manchester attack – with moving accounts of how they helped victims. Chris Parker, 33, was in the foyer area of the venue, where he regularly goes to beg for money as concertgoers head home, when the attack occurred. Mr Parker, who has slept rough in the city for about a year, spoke about a woman in her 60s who suffered fatal leg and head injuries in the bombing. “She passed away in my arms,” he said. Mr Parker also helped a little girl who had lost both her legs in the explosion.

A GoFundMe page to raise money for him has already raised more than £8,000. Stephen Jones, 35, was sleeping on a street near stadium when the bomb exploded. Mr Jones, who rushed to help the injured and dying following the Manchester bomb blast, insists: “I’m not a hero, just a person.” On Tuesday West Ham’s owner and his son vowed to pay for Mr Jones’s rent for six months to thank him for helping the victims of the Manchester suicide bombing.

Theresa May’s Tough Message For Donald Trump THERESA MAY touched down in Brussels yesterday with an important message for Donald Trump after massive information leaks in the wake of the Manchester terror attack. The British PM had been angered by security sources in the United States feeding sensitive information to the press after suicide bomber Salman Abedi massacred 22 people at and Ariana Grande concert. Arriving in Brussels, Mrs May said: “That attack I think shows why it is important for the international community, including NATO, to do more in our fight against terrorism. I am going to be

pushing the UK’s agenda on burden sharing.” The British Prime Minister also said other nations must be “prepared to take responsibility” under NATO. She made clear to the US President that shared intelligence “must remain secure” as she confronted him yesterday over repeated US leaks of key evidence in the Manchester terror attack investigation. She also said the threat level in Britain will “remain at critical and the public should remain vigilant” as police continue making arrests in the probe into the deadly bombing.

Council Opens Book Of Condolences KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL opened a book of condolences for the victims of the Manchester attack. The book of condolences is available

in the reception area of County Buildings in Rathass, Tralee, during office hours.

Proposal To Develop Kerry Cable Car A CALL to develop a cable car tourist attraction in Kerry is likely to be examined in detail next year. Responding to a request for a progress report on his suggestion from Councillor Michael Cahill, Kerry County Council said developing cable car tourist attraction is a medium-term objective in the Kerry

County Tourism Strategy. It states that the feasibility of providing universal/disabled access in a sustainable manner to one of Kerry’s mountain peaks outside Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Areas will be examined. It is likely to be next year before this proposal receives detailed attention.

Man In The Moon Glance up at the moon any night and you will see a glistening silver orb that has inspired poets, writers, musicians and philosophers, says Trevor O’Donoghue IF YOU actually look at the moon, you will notice some lighter and darker patches. These patches of light and dark make distinct patterns and shapes and so we have the ”man in the moon” and the “moon rabbit”. The interesting thing about the patterns of light and dark is that they are caused by distinct geological processes. The darker areas are called Mare which is Latin for seas, because before the advent of the telescope, this is what astronomers thought they looked like. These dark areas are lava plains, most of which formed early on in the history of the moon. The lighter regions tend to be the lunar highlands. These areas were pushed up in the violent early history of the moon some billions of years ago when the moon was bombarded with rocks left over from the formation of our solar system. Larger impacts created huge craters surrounded by pushed up hills and scattered ejecta from the impacts. The

craters flooded with lava and so the lunar seas were formed. The moon had no atmosphere, no weather, wind, plate tectonics, running water or erosion and so all the craters left from the impacts are still visible today unless they were obliterated by a newer craters. All this fascinating pockmarked history is sitting there, waiting to be observed. All we have to do is turn a set of binoculars or a telescope on the moon to get started.

VACUUM cleaning is one of those tasks that splits opinion in a many households. The device below may help as it is a fully autonomous vacuum cleaner by Dyson called the Dyson 360 Eye. The Dyson 360 Eye has 360-degree vision enabling to see its surrounding fully in real-time. The vacuum cleaner is electrically driven and manoeuvres via rubber tracks not too dissimilar to those on a military tank. This setup allows it to move easily on all surfaces whilst maintaining grip. The vacuum cleaner has inbuilt obstacle and drop detection technology so it can avoid any impeding objects or sharp drops such as stairs and steps. The vacuum cleaner is equipped with a powerful Dyson digital V2 motor and uses radial root cyclone technology and has a full width brush-bar to capture dust & dirt. Using a dedicated Dyson Link App the vacuum cleaner can be scheduled and controlled via smartphone or tablet as the user requires. Once the Dyson 360 Eye has its day’s work done it will automatically return to its docking/charge station

to recharge and refresh itself for the next outing. The Dyson 360 Eye weighs 2.44kgs, has a charge time of 2.45 hours and total run time of 45 minutes on a full charge. Not the cheapest of household gadgets (listed at €999 on Dyson.ie) but it might be worthwhile if it keeps the household clean and more importantly the householders happy! Killarney Dyson stockists are O’Leary’s Expert Electrical and MD O’Shea.

Expression Of Sympathy On Manchester Attacks move away from the days where the only check done going in to a concert is that for alcohol in women’s handbags. I have had calls from members of the public today where they now fear going to such organised events. A constituent of mine who is due to go to the upcoming Coldplay concert in Croke Park is seriously considering not going. It simply is not good enough where you will have 82,000 of our citizens who are there to enjoy for some

This was a cold, calculated attack on some of the youngest people in society

I WISH to express my deepest sympathies with the families and those who have been affected by the awful attack carried out in Manchester on Monday night leaving 22 innocent people dead and over 59 people seriously injured. This was a cold calculated attack on some of the youngest people in society and it makes me sick to my stomach to see what should have been a wonderful occasion for young people and their parents, to have these extremists end the night in such a horrific manner. We must do more to protect young people in our country, across Europe and all over the globe. People at this concert were as young as 10 years old and the identity of one of the fatalities confirmed as young as 18 years old, who just hours before was filled with such joy when she met her pop idol. I think it is now time in Ireland that we wake up to the fact we are not exempt from such acts of terror, we must ensure that where we have organised public events such as concerts, matches etc that not only we have security at these events but we have our armed Gardai at these events as well as members of our defence forces, we must

the most enjoyable night of theirs lives could be subjected to such acts of terror, we must protect them. I am calling on the Government to ensure that where we have organised public events where large numbers of people will congregate at one time that members of our armed forces are on hand to deal with any situation that

may arise or to prevent such an incident from happening, at the moment, it is my honest belief that we are not prepared for such incidents and this is simply not good enough, it is the responsibility of the Government and the members of this house to ensure

that we do everything necessary to ensure the safety and peace of mind for our citizens especially when attending such public events in mass amount of numbers. Michael Healy-Rae, TD, Sandymount, Kilgarvan

Welcome

W

elcome to our May edition of Home & Living. This month we are looking at extending your home. Having survived extending my own home last year, I really understand why people move instead. Saying that, I absolutely love the end result so breaking eggs to make omelettes definitely does apply. For anyone extending at the moment or thinking of extending, it is worth all those broken eggs. We’ve also looked at what planning permission you may need, and also whether extending is for you. My top pick this month is, the before and after pictures of the home designed by Oliver Daly Architects, what a transformation. If you’re through to the other side of extending your home, or nearly there, our Notebook has our top picks for furnishing your new extension. We love the Fama suite from Killarney Carpets and Furniture. Thinking Outside The Box

M

OST of us have seen ‘Room to Improve’ on the telly. Whether you’re a fan of Dermot Bannon or not, it’s fantastic to see what can be done to a home with some professional help. Your home is one of your biggest single investments financially as well as emotionally. It’s where we eat, sleep, dream and go to recharge. Extending is a big decision, so finding the right person to visualise your dreams or maybe come up with some new ideas you hadn’t even thought of, is very important. Employing someone to remodel your most valuable asset is likely to be a nerve-racking experience. Unless your project is very simple, it makes sense to at least talk to an architect before you get going. Architects are highly skilled and professionally trained at turning aspirations into reality. Before contacting an architect, you will need to draw up a project brief. This is your wish-list for the project. Focus on what you want to achieve, noting all your requirements and highlighting any problems that need solving. Think in terms of how you will want to use the space now and in the future, rather than what needs to be built. You should also try to establish your overall budget. This will help you discuss costs upfront with the architect and avoid disappointment at a later stage. Architects offer a wide range of services from taking your project from inception to completion or just design only but bear in mind that there are many options in between. If you’re unsure what you want or what style would most suit your existing house, then an architect is the way to go.

Planning Advice From Kerry County Council QUESTION I’m building an extension. Do I need planning permission? ANSWER SMALL-SCALE domestic extensions, including conservatories, do not require planning permission if the extension is to the rear of the house and complies with the following: • The original floor area of the house is not increased by more than 40sq m. Where the house has been extended before, the new and existing extension cannot exceed 40sq m in total • For terraced or semi-detached houses, the floor area of any extension above ground level does not exceed 12 square metres (including previous extensions) • Any extension above ground floor level is at least 2m from any boundary • Any extension does not exceed the height of the house • Any extension does not reduce the area of private open space, reserved for the occupants of the house, to less than 25sq m There are also rules about the height allowed in such an

extension. These include: • If the rear wall of the house does not include a gable, the height of the walls of the extension must not exceed the height of the rear wall of the house • If the rear wall has a gable, the walls of the extension shall not be higher than the sidewalls of the house • In the case of a flat roofed extension, the height of the highest part of the roof may not exceed the height of the eaves or parapet. There are also rules about the required distances between windows in extensions, the facing boundary of the adjoining property and the use of the roof of the extension. It is important to note that there are a number of instances where exemptions do not apply, i.e. planning permission will be required no matter how minor the development and Article 9 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 - 2015 identifies these instances. If you need guidance on building an extension and planning requirements you can contact Kerry County Council’s Planning Department on 066-7183582

Should I Stay Or Should I Go!

T

Extend Or Move, Which Is Best?

HERE comes a time in most households when you find yourself stuck for space and needing that little bit extra to alleviate the squeeze. Maybe your growing family needs that tiny bit more space for a new arrival, toys or visiting friends. Or you are just craving the light-filled family room that seems to be the norm in all the house magazines at the moment. However, knowing what to do is not always that simple, and so we have looked at the pros and cons of both scenarios to help answer what is right for you. Extending your home is a cost-effective investment that will pay back itself when you decide to sell – but not always. If resale value is not an issue for you, you can do what you want within reason, but if this is not the case you may need to look at the financial implications for the future should you decide to sell. For example, it may be a fantastic four-bedroom family home but if all the other houses are two-bedroom semis, will people be reluctant to invest money at a price way above the neighbours’ homes?

While moving house can take a while to process, so too can extending your property

That said, extending in some form or another is often a more sensible approach from a financial perspective. Building costs for an extension depend vastly on location, size and the type of build you will be planning. On top of that, you may be expected to pay around 10% of the building costs on fees for architects, structural engineers, building regulation checks and planning permission if required. Equally, you may have to deal with extra costs if your kitchen is out of use, or if you must move out during the period of the build. While moving house can take a while to process, so too can extending your property. Your home will temporarily become a building site until completion, which will most likely be stressful, living in a building site is no fun but sometimes moving out is not an option logistically or financially. Before building work even begins, you will need to seek planning permission. We have an article in this section with some of the regulations on planning for your extension. Moving has its own problems. Few house sales run smoothly, you will have to deal with viewings, the possibility of a sale before you have found your new dream home, being caught up in a chain, and maybe having to rent before you finally get to move to your new

home! The idea of all that packing is making me tired already, however, it does give you a great chance to declutter! So how can this decision be made easier, make a list of what you love about your current home, the things you will miss or can’t do without, it may be the house itself or maybe the location, garden, privacy, take all this into account. Now make a second list of the things you

don’t have that you want, be that more living space, a larger kitchen, an en-suite, playroom, a large garage. The final question is will you get all you need by extending! You don’t want an extension so huge or disproportionate or not in keeping with the original house that you can’t sell if you need to in future. The biggest tip I have after living through an extension, is an old one, my dad always said measure twice, cut once! Plan everything, research as much as you can have a realistic image in your head how your extension is going to look and what you are going to get from it space wise, get as much help as you can with this part, be it from an architect or trusted builder, because once you start, it is more difficult or impossible to change your mind! And if you’re a “Monica”, then extending is definitely not for you, talk to your auctioneer instead!

We are the first generation to filter our lives, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

Is It Time To Turn The Filter Off? THE world we live in at the moment is one that, I feel, is contradicting itself. On one hand we are the first generation to face mental illness head on. We talk about our feelings. We say it is ok not to be ok. Then we are also the first generation to literally filter the dark parts of our lives out so that the world sees our seemingly ‘perfect’ lives on social media. The more I thought about this, the more I thought about the topic in relation to the arts. As artists we are supposed to be proud that we bare our souls and hearts to the world through our creations and our self-expression. While we do expose ourselves and our insecurities on a daily basis, we also dread that someone will see our flaws. I know that I personally worry I might

step onto a stage where the audience doesn’t like what I do. A stage where I will stumble over a word or my voice might crack. But then I ask myself, is that not all part of a live performance? I do things like mindfulness to calm those nagging worries, but are those little insecurities not actually all part of what it is to be human? I ask my fellow artists, would you let the world see your broken creations? Should we have an art exhibition of The Lost Paintings? Should we have a concert where we air The Forgotten Music? Would we dare expose our failings to the world? Should we just turn the filter off? •

Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Over medium heat, warm the oil in a large pan. Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper, slip them into the pan, and cook until they are well browned on all sides. When the chicken is deeply golden, transfer it to a platter and keep it in a warm place. Pour off all but two tablespoons of the cooking fat from the pan. Lower the heat to medium, add the butter, onions, shallots, garlic, and thyme, and cook and stir just until the vegetables start to take on a little colour. Add the potatoes, carrots, celeriac and bacon and cook for about five minutes. Cover the pan and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and return the chicken to the pan. Add the chicken stock, bring to the boil. Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes.

Garden Magic Roots Of Gardening Run Deep The feeling of continuity and following in the footsteps and traditions of generations that have gone before is one of the things Debby Looney loves about gardening.

THE history and people which surround horticulture i s fascinating, from plant hunters to famous landscapers to well-known cultivators, there is an aspect of interest for everyone who is even only vaguely interested in digging! Take the cottage garden, for instance. Many people have asked me for cottage garden plants, but where to start? Close your eyes and picture a cottage garden…. Frothy blues, pinks and creams are conjured up, perhaps with a red brick wall and a winding path through it. But it is difficult to pinpoint the actual plants, even though we have an idea of our ultimate goal. Herbaceous borders, cottage gardens or informal planting have been written about since Shakespeare’s days, but it was Gertrude Jekyll, (18431932), who really made this a landscaping style. She was a painter, writer, designer and gardener, who was influenced by the works of Turner and the Impressionist movement. In her lifetime, she designed over 400 gardens, and her legacy remains to this day. During the WW2 the lack of manpower resulted in a revival of these gardens, along with conscious planting of fruit and vegetables within the flower garden. So, what to plant? Traditionally, Campanulas, hardy Geraniums and Lupins compete for space with Peaonies, Phlox and Aquilegia. Verbena bonariensis, Thalictrum and Gypsophila are suitable for the back, along with giant Scabious, Delphiniums, Aconitum and Foxgloves. Roses, especially Austin roses, are used to great effect, as are climbers such as Clematis or Sweet pea which can be grown on obelisks, or wigwams made from bamboo canes. The trick to this type of garden is close planting, and a complementary blending of colour. Repeat some of the same plants throughout, to give a sense of continuity. Bear in mind that a lot of these perennial plants like a welldrained soil. It is worth cultivating the ground well before you start a border like this, as you could have quite a few losses otherwise. Having said that, with a bit of advice, there are many plants which grow even in the wet clay which makes up the foundation of my garden! • Got a gardening question? Ogier Builds On WRC Lead With Portugal Win Sebastien Ogier rebuilt his World Rally Championship lead in Portugal by sealing his second victory since joining M-Sport Ford, winning by 15.6 seconds over title rival Thierry Neuville’s Hyundai and Dani Sordo in third. It was a torrid weekend again for the Citroen pairing of Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle with suspension damage near the end of day two coming of the back of their epic exit from the previous round. Up to that point in the event they had been in a battle for the lead with Jari-Matti Latvala and Hayden Paddon. Craig Breen in the sister car had better fortune in another consistent run to fin-

ish 5th overall. The advantage that Citroen had coming into the season is clearly gone and Ogier now getting to grips with the WRC Ford Fiesta makes him the firm favourite for the title. Citroen has reacted to their troubled start by drafting in VW refugee, Andreas Mikkelsen for the next round in Sardinia. This is seen as a wake-up call to Meeke and Breen amid the current setbacks. Both Meeke and Breen have had difficulties with the current Citroen’s handling but Meeke has admitted that he has also made mistakes. The only Citroen win this season was in Mexico and that wasn’t without drama. All eyes on Sardinia.

We thank you. Special thanks to Fr. Niall for celebrating the funeral mass and to the choir who provided the beautiful singing. To the Crokes club and Athletic club for providing the guard of honour, we thank you. To Michael O’Shea Undertakers for your help and professionalism and to the grave diggers for preparing his final resting place, we thank you. Thank you to Dr. Donal Kavanagh and Killarney Garda for all their help.

In loving memory of Dessie Clarke Late of Coolegreane Park, Killarney Who died on May 22nd 2016. That cheeky smile, That hearty laugh, Sam protecting the fireside hearth, Cups of tea and Lidl’s scones, GAA and the craic with bones, Walks in the park, Sometimes in the dark, Gazing at stars with dreams from afar, Talking it out what it’s all about. We wonder still, We always will.

Dad, Sometime i try to count The reasons why i loved you. But i can never seem to count that far. I loved you in a million ways And for a million reasons. Just because you were my Dad. You are my inspiration, You are the song I sing, You are my everything, My daily sunshine, my evening star, Everything I hoped for in a Dad. You are my thoughts when I’m awake, My dreams when I’m asleep.

Forever loved and missed. Love your sister Caroline and brother Brian. xx

MURPHY

In Loving Memory of Eckhard Gogsch, Ross Road, Killarney who died on 24th May 2016.

In loving memory of Declan Healy, Rockfield, Faha, Killarney, called home by God on the 21st May, 2013.

In loving memory of Eileen Long, Woodlawn Road, Killarney and Nohoval, Knocknagree, Co. Cork who died on the 2nd of June 2012.

Treasured memories of Noreen Murphy, late of Aughacureen who died on 24th May 2010.

As we lovingly remember our wonderful husband and dad, Eckhard Gogsch, on this the first Anniversary of Eckhard’s passing, his wife Patricia, sons Peter & Dieter and Family would like to express our thanks most sincerely to all those who sympathised with us on our great loss.

Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We had throughout the years, Then when the Summer sun, Shines and wakes the flowers, I’ll walk that light from Heaven, Around the corners of every room, Do the things we did before, The same in every way, Just whisper a little prayer to me, At the dawn of every day. Just think of me as gone ahead, For my love is a blessing In death it still can last. Forget your troubles and worries, They are mine forever more. I’ll watch and care and love you, From Heaven’s open door, And when your road gets rough and rocky, Or you’re down and need a crutch, Remember, I’m right beside you, Just an inch too short to touch.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the many friends, neighbours and wellwishers who visited our home, attended the removal, service and burial and who provided emotional and practical support for us at this difficult time, your kind words were very much appreciated. For those who telephoned, travelled long distances, sent floral tributes, cards and messages of condolences, as well as those who made charitable donations in aid of Palliative care, we are truly grateful. Gratitude is also extended to all our wonderful neighbours and friends for their support and assistance at this time and always, as well as those that supplied food and refreshments to the house. A special word of thanks to Dr. Patricia Sheehan and the team of nurses, staff and management of University Hospital Kerry who looked after Eckhard so well. A very big thank you to all in the Palliative care and oncology services in UHK for their care, kindness and respect shown at all times. To Dr. Coffey and team at the Ross Medical Practice, to Finbarr Kennelly Pharmacist and team – thank you for your assistance and exceptional level of care throughout. Our thanks to Fr. Lenihan who carried out the funeral ceremony and for your guidance throughout. Many thanks also to all at O’Shea’s Funeral directors for their respectful empathy, kindness and professionalism. Thanks also to Brian and staff in the Brehon Hotel for the lovely food after the funeral. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Skal Members and hospitality members who formed the guard of honour as well as the Gardaí for their assistance with traffic. To those who helped in any way, your contribution made our loss more bearable. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. “Nothing can ever take away The love a heart holds dear, Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps him near.” Eckhard’s 1st Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Saturday 27th May at 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. You were a wonderful part of my life You have my love forever, Mary. This letter comes to thank you, Dad, For needed word of praise; The counsel and the guidance, too, That shaped my grown-up days. No words of mine can tell you, Dad The things I really feel; But you must know my love for you Is lasting, warm and real. (Gemma, Savio, Izzy & Eloa)

Just a prayer from the family Who loved you, Just a memory fond and true, In our hearts you will live forever, Because we thought the world of you. Fondly remembered and sadly missed by Tim, Mick, John, Marianne and Margaret and their families.

Sadly missed by your daughter Marie.

Celtic Come From Behind To Seal Derby Day Win A hard-fought victory over 10-man Athletic has set Celtic up nicely, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan Premier A Killarney Athletic 2-3 Killarney Celtic

Current League Table

CELTIC came from behind to beat bitter rivals Athletic on Sunday and in the process open up a three-point lead at the top of the league table.

With just two games to go, it’s looking like Celtic plus one of Athletic, Listowel, Fenit or Dingle for the final as an exciting season draws to a close. We now need to win both of our remaining games and hope results elsewhere go our way. Sunday’s result was disastrous really, especially considering how well we started. We struck first early on when Jamie Doolan pounced on a rebound and I think it’s fair to say that we were good value for the lead. When Daithí Casey doubled our advantage with an audacious 40-year lob we were thrilled to have put ourselves in such a strong position so early in the game. Having said that, Celtic were always going to put up a fight and when Wayne Sparling’s cross deceived Brian O’Connor, Tony Brosnan was left with the simplest of tasks to make it 2-1. Things got even worse for Athletic moments later when right back Conor Farrell was shown a straight red card. It was a massive body blow at a crucial time of the game. Celtic are very comfortable on the ball so trying to hang on to a lead against them is difficult enough with eleven men, let alone ten. We kept them at bay until half time but we were well aware that there was going to be an onslaught after the break. I felt as though we actually defended well from open play but, in the end, two set pieces were our undoing. We were well aware going into the game that Celtic have been prolific from dead ball situations all season. The likes of Jamie Spillane, Pa McGrath and Gary Keane are all very dangerous in the air, but on Sunday it was Cathal O’Shea and makeshift right back Peter McCarthy who did the damage with two precise headers.

It was tough to get any sort of momentum going in the second half although we did get a boost when Brendan Falvey was shown his second yellow with around ten minutes to go. In the end we resorted to long throw-ins but couldn’t get the ball to fall our way. The last chance of the game actually came my way but Roy Kelliher managed to keep my hooked effort out and Celtic walked away with all three points. It’s a very tough loss to take but we have to put it behind us now and focus on the last two games. We’re at home to Rattoo Rovers, who are already relegated, and fellow title contenders Listowel Celtic. Victory in both would give us an excellent chance of reaching the league final, or at least making a playoff to reach the league final. Celtic have Fenit at home and Dingle away and they’ll fancy their chances of picking up the four points they need to guarantee first place. Regardless of what happens in the league, we’ll probably have at least one more cut off each other this season. Celtic face Rattoo on Monday in the cup and the winners will play us in Ferndale in the quarterfinal.

Legion defeat Kenmare Shamrocks 2-13 to 1-15 There is so little between these two teams. They met once again on Sunday last in Kenmare. Star of the show was James O’Donoghue who scored nine points, four of these from play. Kenmare got off to a great start and led by four points

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE rugby season nears its climax as the final of the PRO12 takes place tomorrow at the Aviva. Expectations were rife that the match may be an all Irish final with Munster and Leinster favourites to make it through, however you can never write off any of the Welsh sides and last weekend this proved to be the case yet again. First off Leinster hosted Scarlets at the RDS last Friday night in the first Semi Final. To be blunt about it, they never turned up even, though they were gifted an extra player from the first half as

to nil before Legion got going. It was level pegging on seven points each at the interval. Brian O’Sullivan scored a goal for Kenmare three minutes after the break but their joy was short lived. Jamie O’Sullivan scored the first of his brace of goals picking up a pass from Robbie Leen. Jamie scored his second goal at the three quarter stage to put Legion 2-9 to 1-10 ahead. Kenmare fought back and it looked like another draw until James O’Donoghue came to the fore once more. Legion hung on to that all-important lead of one point as Sean O’Shea had two late opportunities to level the game. Last year’s Kerry minor captain failed to get the equaliser. The Legion will be in action this evening away to Austin Stacks at 7.30pm in the Austin Stack Park. Referee for this game is Mike Brosnan.

net bulged from David Clifford’s rasping shot. That put East Kerry 3-5 to 0-6 clear and the game was over as a contest. Jeff O ‘Donoghue and Dara Roche were the other goal scorers. Gavin O’Grady did best for Mid Kerry. The question is often posed how long more will David Clifford be available as the lure of Australian Rules football beckons for this talented player. Mid Kerry had to go without their Kerry Duo, the injured Darren O’Sullivan and Peter Crowley and this weakened their team. Even with them on board Mid Kerry would not have won. The East Kerry side impressed me. They may well be a force this year and certainly next year. They have youth and spirit in their favour. Bainisteoir Jerry O’Sullivan has the makings of a very good side.

Stacks Win

Three players were sent off in this game at Rathbeg where Rathmore settled after a nervous start and won easily 2-16 to Feale Ranger’s 2-9. At the three quarter stage Rangers had David Foran and Pat Corridan red-carded. Not long after that Rathmore and Kerry star Paul Murphy got a straight for dissent. That was very much out of character for Murphy. Rathmore got off to a poor start and trailed by 2-1 to 0-I after 10 minutes. A penalty converted by Mark Reen settled Rathmore, who led at the interval 1-7 to 2-3. Rathmore continued to lead throughout the second half especially when George O’Keeffe pounced for a goal. This was a good win for Rathmore. South Kerry 2-17 Kilcummin 1-5 Kilcummin were missing some players that were needed to take on South Kerry, who were winners long before the final whistle. The Iveragh side led at half time 2-6 to 1-3. Bryan Sheehan was their top scorer with a personal tally of 1-5. Niall O ‘Shea scored 1-3. Left half forward Paul O’Riordan scored the Kilcummin goal. With the aid of a strong second half wind South Kerry tacked on the points for this 15-point win, despite the great effort of Shane McSweeney who battled bravely at midfield for Kilcummin. K O’Rahilly’s 2-19 Dingle 3-9 This was a big disappointment for Dingle who were installed as one of the favourites best equipped to relieve Crokes of the title.

A Stacks had a close call in Scartaglin where they just edged out St Kieran’s 0-14 to 1-9. Goalkeeper David Hennessy came to their rescue in the closing minutes when he saved Aidan Breen’s penalty shot.

Runaway Victory For Dr Crokes

Hard to believe it that St Brendan’s scored 16 points, but were decisively beaten by a rampant Dr Crokes side. Two goals each from seasoned forwards, Colm Cooper, Daithí Casey and Kieran O’Leary as well as a goal from Gavin White broke the hearts of St Brendan’s who lost 7-17 to 0-16. The good news for Crokes and for Kerry is that Johnny Buckley, the new Kerry captain, came on at half-time. He has been out of action with a troublesome leg injury for some time. The impressive Ivan Parker scored eight points for Brendan’s and seven of these were from play, a remarkable score for a team that were so far behind throughout the game. That puts Crokes in to the quarterfinal. They are of course the holders of the Bishop Moynihan Cup.

East Kerry In A Canter

East Kerry trounced Mid Kerry 4-15 to 1-11 in a one sided game. I was very impressed by this very youthful East Kerry side. Minor star David Clifford looked very much at home both at corner forward and at full forward. He was well policed by Ger Hartnett of Beaufort until the 30th minute when he picked up a pass from his older brother Paudie, turned quickly and there was nothing Beaufort ‘keeper Mike Moriarty could do as the

Welsh winger Steff Evans saw red for a silly tip tackle. You would have thought that Scarlets had the extra man as they were outstanding. We saw how dangerous they can be as they scored 24 unanswered points in the second half against Munster at Thomond Park in February. Leinster were lacklustre and missed some of their big guns as Heaslip and the Kearney brothers were missing due to injury. Even with the likes of Sexton, Ringrose, McGrath and Henshaw they looked very ordinary at best on the night. There will be concern for Warren Gatland as Jack McGrath went off injured and the poor performance by Sexton will worry him ahead of the Lions tour in a few weeks time. Scarlets will be a difficult team to beat in the final, having run out 27–12 winners in the end.

Cards galore in Rathmore

Closer to home, Munster hockeyed the Ospreys at Thomond Park, a match which saw Donncha Ryan and Francis Saili play their last matches at Thomond Park. Sailis is rumoured to be moving to Harlequins while Ryan is moving to Racing 92 in a big money move. It is disappointing to have to lose Ryan as he has played with Munster for 13 seasons and is a powerhouse in the second row. However, they went out with a huge send off as Munster won 23-3. Zebo and Earls combined to create a try that should have Gatland wondering about his Lions selections! A fantastic win which sets up an epic final tomorrow. The Aviva will be a sea of Red and Munster will want to finish the season with silverware in memory of Axel Foley. Without a doubt the toughest year for the Red Army but we aren’t done yet! Mumhan abú!

Killarney Golfers Tee Up To Be Crowned Munster Champions THE Killarney Golf Club Ladies Senior Cup Team were crowned Munster Champions on Sunday in a series of thrilling encounters. The team met Muskerry Golf Club on Saturday, in the quarterfinal of the competition. They beat Muskerry well and went on to meet a much-fancied Douglas Golf Club on Sunday morning in the semi-final. This match turned out to be a tight encounter with great golf being played by both Killarney and Douglas. However, it was Mairead Martin’s birdie putt on the 19th that clinched the match for Killarney and guaranteed their place in the afternoon final against Lahinch GC. The match against a very strong Lahinch side was an epic encounter. To

add to the excitement of the game Valerie Clancy, Killarney, scored a hole-in-one on the seventh. The final result came down to the wire with Valerie Clancy winning on 17, followed by Mairead Martin on 18. Kelly Brotherton was one up going down the 18th. She hit a tremendous drive down 18, chipped on and parred with two putts. Brotherton then halved the hole with Áine Donegan from Lahinch, thus ensuring a Killarney victory. The Senior Cup team is managed by Mary Geaney and the players include Lady Captain Amy Arthur, Kelly Brotherton, Valerie Clancy, Claire Keating, Mairead Martin, Anne Moynihan-Rudden, Eimear O’Donnell and Mary Sheehy. The Killarney

AGM

THE St Paul’s Basketball Club Annual General Meeting on will take place on Tuesday, May 30, in The Malton Hotel, Killarney, at 8pm. Following a successful season on and off the court, the club is appealing to all members and interested parties to make a special effort to attend. All senior members and all parents of juvenile are more than welcome. This meeting is open to everyone to give their opinions and influence the direction the club will take going forward. Plans for next season will be put in place. St Paul’s Basketball Club chairman Padraig Weldon is appealing for a big turnout from everyone. “We really need as many parents as possible to get involved as we will be running an introduction coaching course over the summer for anyone looking to help out as a coach or with a team in general. You require zero knowledge of basketball for this. All we are looking for is a small amount of your time. The reality is that if the club cannot provide more coaches for the coming season then we will be left with no other choice but to put a cap on the numbers of teams and players. So please come along to the AGM or speak to a club member about helping out for next season,” he said. St Paul’s Basketball Club was founded in 1985 and anyone who has been involved with the club in any capacity over the past 32 years is welcome.

Killarney Athletic 2-3 Killarney Celtic A typically hard fought derby was played out in Woodlawn this morning between 2 evenly matched teams played in a tough but fair manner. We got off to a dream start with a goal from Jamie Doolan and an absolute brilliant Daithi Casey effort. The

turning point was without doubt the sending off of Conor Farrell and Celtic hit back with 3 goals to claim the points and bragging rights. The Athletic lads are still right in the mix for a league final spot and will regroup ahead of further big matches. Tommy Healy Cup Killarney Athletic B 2-1 cedar Galaxy This team are playing some great soccer lately and took a vital win at home to local rivals Cedar Galaxy on Saturday evening. Table Quiz in aid of Barnados A big thank you to everyone who supported our table quiz in aid of the Barnardos Tournament Teams last Friday. A great night was had by all. Killarney Celtic have always been proud to support childrens’ charity Barnardos and to partake (and regularly host) their annual Tournament – this year we are sending no less than four teams to Douglas in Cork. U7/U8 Training U7/U8 Training is now finished for this season; a big thank you to the players, parents, and most especially the dedicated coaches. Soccer Tots Our Soccer Tots Programme for boys and girls aged 4-6 starts in mid June. This is an 8 week fun and friendly introduction to soccer under fully qualified and garda vetted supervision. Results Denny Premier: Killarney Athletic 2 Killarney Celtic 3 Simply unreal. Ourselves and our local neighbours and rivals (and friends off the pitch, of course) were deadlocked at the table’s summit before the game and all KKDL eyes were on this one. Jamie Doolan and Daithi Casey, two brilliant players in fairness, left Celtic trailing – but we have climbed even bigger mountains than that this season and Celtic went to work with a will. Tony Brosnan’s sharpness brought us a lifeline. A touch of Cathal O’Shea magic made it all square. With time running out and tension high, a chance fell to Peter McCarthy.....when it’s Peter, they aren’t chances – they are certainties. Youths League: Fenit Samphires 1 Killarney Celtic 1 A great game between two high quality and well-matched sides. Celtic took the lead in the first half and dealt very well with good Fenit pressure, only to concede a last gasp equaliser. A point, however, was enough to qualify us for the League

Declan and of the Men’s Committee wish to congratulate the Club’s Ladies, Senior team on their fantastic win in the Munster final played against Lahinch which was staged at Tipperary Golf Club on Sunday last in a very close match, and we wish them every success as they now progress to the final stages of this most prestigious National competition. Declan would also like to remind all of the Men’s Club members that the President, Breda Duggan will be holding the President’s Prize on Sunday the 4th of June, and that the Men’s Club will be playing their section of the competition on Killeen course. The competition played on Sunday the 21st of May was the O’Donoghue-Ring sponsored, back stakes classic on Killeen, and although there was a full time sheet, nobody managed to shoot a level par round, such were the playing conditions with constant blustery winds blowing and affecting the scoring on almost every hole. The winning score of 35 points by James Devane was a

most creditable score, and there was only 1 player in the top ten with a 10 handicap or over. Many of those who finished their round were heard to say that they were broken men such was the buffeting that they had endured. Results were as follows, James Devane(9) 35 points, 2nd James “The Rock” O’Neill(3) 33 points, 3rd Brendan O’Toole(4) 33 points, 4th Conor Healy(9) 32 points, 5th Thomas O’Connor(12) 32 points. Dr Crokes

Senior County Championship - Round 2 Dr Crokes 7-17 St Brendan’s 0-16 We got off to a great start and had a dream first half to go into a half time lead of 4-12 to 0-5. St Brendan’s did have a fair amount of play in this half but good defensive play by our 1 to 7 denied them the goals they badly needed. The second half was far more competitive and even though our opponents sent over eleven points in the second thirty minutes we still got through for three more goals and a comprehensive victory. Our Management must have been very pleased with our display as they were anxious to give the players a rest and qualify for the quarter final of the competition by the second round. St Brendan’s no doubt will be disappointed but I would still not rule them out from qualifying for the last eight. Team and Scorers: Shane Murphy 0-1 (45), John Payne, Mike Moloney, Fionn Fitzgerald 0-1, David O’Leary, Gavin White 1-1, Alan O’Sullivan 0-1, Ambrose O’Donovan, Shane Doolan, Daithi Casey 2-3 (1-0 penalty, 0-1 free), Gavin O’Shea 0-1, Brian Looney 0-1, Kieran O’Leary 2-3, Jordan Kiely 0-1, Colm Cooper 2-4 (0-2 frees), Subs: Mike Milner, Johnny Buckley, Cillian Fitzgerald, Jason Lyne, Chris Brady, Paul Clarke. Under 12 Division 4 County League Having played all three preliminary gamed without Amy O Connor and Leah McMahon our U12 ladies were visitors to Beale/Ballyduff on Tuesday 16th for the first round of the County League. Having won the toss,Dr. Crokes captain Hollie Cronin decided to play with the assistance of a strong wind .The opening quarter was evenly matched with both teams exchanging points, before Dr. Crokes forged ahead with scores from Pia Hickey, and Laura O Shea. Crokes wing forwards, Cara and Saoirse O Sullivan were very prominent during this time of the match, and were ably assisted by Gráinne Byrne and Jocelyn Hickey. Some great attacking play from Ella Bartlett,Katie McCarthy and Ester Greene in the half back line, helped the team to a 0-8 to 0-4 half time advantage. Amy Clifford and Kiera Geaney came in to strengthen up the team for the second half against a strong breeze and both did a tremendous job as did the tigerish Sadhbh Stack when she entered the fray during the second half .Sinead Byrne and Ella Barrett were at hand to bolster the team when needed, but It was a combination of stout defending by the full back line of Ali O Donoghue,Teagan O’ Sullivan and Selina Thawiset and two brilliant scores from powerful full Sinead Oliver and Leah McMahon(in her first game back after injury), lead to the team sharing the spoils on a scoreline of 10 points each. Unfortunately our boys came out the wrong side of the result in a thrilling encounter played on a fine but windy evening in Beaufort. A last minute goal gave a final score of Beaufort 6-11 Fossa 3-13, which doesn’t give a true reflection of the enormous effort put in by our boys. Well done lads and on now to the County League.

Killarney Legion

CO. CHAMPIONSHIP REPLAY Kenmare Shamrocks 1-15 Killarney Legion 2-13 On a near perfect surface in Fr. Breen Park with a slight breeze blowing from the town side the Legion seniors came away with a hard fought 1pt.win. Slow to start they trailed by 4 after 10mins.as they struggled to get to the pace of the game, gradually the defence settled and the forwards

were supplied with better ball. Much the same as the drawn game neither side could make a decisive break and the sides traded point for point to leave them level at 7 apiece at the short whistle. While the Legion had the first point of the second period it was Kenmare who hit the net first to boost their chances but it shook the green and whites into action which saw Rob Leen find Jamie O Sullivan to gather one handed turning in the process and flash the ball to the net. The same player was becoming more influential and he struck for a second after good work by Sean McCarthy. Kenmare kept coming and whittled away at the deficit but the Legion driven on by the inspirational James O Donoghue, who bagged 9pts,and Billy McGuire who worked tirelessly created a neat point well taken by the steadily improving Finbar Murphy to push his side ahead as the finish line neared. Both sides showed admirable levels of fitness and Denis Sheahan epitomised this when he worked hard to turn over two Kenmare possessions into injury time. A much higher press on the Kenmare kickout by the Legion forwards certainly made a difference and overall a tough test successfully overcome and some valuable lessons learnt. Unfortunately Darragh O Doherty suffered an ankle injury during the game which saw him limp out of the action in some discomfort, hopefully he won’t be out of commission for too long. Scorers - Jamie O Sullivan 2gls, James O Donoghue 9 pts,(5f),Billy McGuire,2pts.Conor Keane 1pt,Finbar Murphy 1pt. FIXTURE Co. Championship Rd.2.Austin Stacks V Killarney Legion Fri.26th.May.Connolly Park,at 7.30p.m. GIRLS U16 DIV.3 FINAL Killarney Legion 1-15 Na Gaeil 0-5 When these two sides met in the league proper there were just a few points between them in the Legion’s favour so this was expected to be another close encounter. However the u16 girls left no margin for error as they turned in a performance worthy of winning any final to deservedly win with a healthy buffer between the two. Alas the occasion was clouded slightly as Clodagh Sheehan had the misfortune to break two fingers during the game - we wish her all the very best in her recovery. Captain Zena Shine spoke elegantly after the game and acknowledged the fine efforts of all involved. We congratulate all involved on a great season.
