Pieta House Founder:

News Briefs ...

‘Darkness Into Light Is All About Kindness’

Nappies For Dogs?

Anticipation is building for Killarney’s annual Darkness into Light event and Pieta House founder Joan Freeman has urged this year’s participants to invite others to join them on the symbolic walk. “Bring people with you,” she said. “Invite people. And especially people that you don’t normally invite to things. Invite them to this and see how they will react to that kindness. “Darkness into Light is all about kindness. It’s an opportunity for people who have lost someone to suicide to actually stop thinking about their loss and help to prevent it happening to other families. “That’s what we witness every single year at Darkness into Light,”

she added. Also speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District Cllr Brendan Cronin praised the O’Carroll family and Pieta House for organising the event. Marie and Denis O’Carroll lost their 14-year-old son Nathan to suicide in 2007. “There’s great credit due to the O’Carroll family for launching this event in memory of Nathan and being so involved in it,” he said. “Also to Pieta House and the tremendous work they’re doing in assisting people and assisting families all across the country. There are very few families that this issue hasn’t affected and any help that Pieta House can give is of huge

importance. “It may save a life,” he added. “And that’s what it’s all about.” Nathan’s Walk will start at 4.15am on May 6 at the Killarney Race Course and participants are invited to walk, jog or run the 5km route at their own pace. Although it will be possible to register on the day, the organisers suggest signing up online at http://dil.pieta.ie/ before April 27 to save time and to get your official Darkness into Light t-shirt. There will also be pre-registration at the Killarney Race Course on May 3, 4 and 5 from 5-8pm. You should bring proof of registration (either printed or on your phone) and arrive 30 minutes before the start time.

Fundraiser For Tiernan A Great Success A large crowd attended the fundraiser for Tiernan Dineen in the Torc Hotel Saturday night. 11-year-old Tiernan suffers from Spina Bifida and is a wheelchair user. His room in his house is upstairs and he can no longer crawl up and down the stairs. Tiernan has been very sick for the past six months and has had five surgeries in this time. He has been left with no other option than to sleep in the sitting room. The Dineen family are currently raising funds to build a suitable room downstairs, and last week’s event will be of great help towards this goal. Tiernan is the grandson of the very popular Batty O’Sullivan and many of his family and friends were there on the night. Young Tiernan was also in attendance and was the man of the hour. In great spirits, with a smile on his face and a thumbs-up for everyone, he definitely inherited his grandfather’s personality.

At a fundraiser for Tiernan Dineen at the Torc Hotel were back from left: Aoife O’Sullivan, Noreen O’Connor, Teresa Mangan, Batty O’Sullivan, Andrew O’Sullivan, Mary McDonnnell, Pat McDonnell and Jerry O’Leary. Front: Céilim O ‘Sullivan, Sharon O’Sullivan, Michael Dineen, Lorraine Dineen, Cuan Dineen and Tiernan Dineen.

A Kerry County Councillor has gained national attention following a suggestion that dogs should wear nappies. Officials have organised awareness campaigns and hired litter wardens but dog fouling is still a cause for concern around the county. Speaking to Radio Kerry, Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael O’Shea from Milltown voiced his concerns. He drew comparisons with the Killarney jarveys who started using nappies on their horses in the past number of years. “I would call on the Minister or those in power that they would look at a company that would design nappies for dogs,” he said. “It is definitely unhygienic for any person carrying a dog for a walk to be scooping up after a foul and to be carrying it around with them until they find a suitable bin.” He also said it was particularly dangerous for children in open green areas.

Monex Launch UCC Scholarships For Killarney Students Successful Killarney-based company Monex have unveiled a new scholarship for the Leaving Cert students of Killarney. The Monex Scholarship Programme aims to support any students from Killarney’s three secondary schools that are accepted to third level studies at Cork University Business School at UCC. Pupils from St Brendan’s College, St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School and Killarney Community College will all be eligible for funding of up to €3000. Applications will begin following the first round of CAO offers this August and will remain open until October 18. Speaking at the launch, Dean of Cork University Business School Ciaran Murphy said that the college were lucky to have Monex founder and owner Frank Murphy on board. “Our students and, indeed, faculty are extremely fortunate that Frank Murphy, Adjunct Professor in CUBS, has so willingly agreed to offer his vast experience and expertise to them,” he said. “We have all benefited from Frank’s wisdom, practical advice and generosity of spirit. We truly value and appreciate the relationship with Monex and look forward to welcoming students from the schools in Killarney as they embark on their studies with us in Cork University Business School,” he added.

Tourism

Two Killarney Hotels Ranked In Top 2,500 In The World The Brehon and The Hotel Europe have been ranked among the 2,500 best hotels in the world, according to reviews by users of hotels.com. The popular website is one of the biggest online accommodation booking websites in the world. A total of 18 Irish hotels ranked amongst the 2,500 best hotels, as announced at the Hotels.com Loved by Guests Gold Awards earlier this week. Travel experts analysed millions of guest reviews to compile the substantial list. Hotels.com has over 25 million trusted, genuine guest reviews on its website. Each hotel taking home the top prize of a Loved by Guests Gold Award has achieved an average guest review rating of 4.7 or higher (out of 5). A total of 87 countries made the list. The United States had by far the greatest representation of hotels with 969 in total, followed by the United Kingdom with 171, Italy with 153, Canada with 86 and Spain with 70. “The Loved by Guests Awards celebrate those topnotch hotels that guests really loved and wanted to tell everyone about,” said Taylor L. Cole, Head of Public Relations with Hotels.com. “We’re finding reviews are becoming more powerful than ever and in fact many travellers are preferring to book based on guest reviews rather than official star rating. Think of how many times you’ve chosen a hotel because you’ve been scrolling through reviews on your smartphone and read about its comfy beds and fantastic breakfast.” It was a busy week for The Brehon who also announced their new Power Lunch menu. Cork All-Star and Ireland’s fittest family mentor Anna Geary and nutritionist for the Kerry team Kevin Beasley joined forces to launch the exciting new menu. The Power Lunch menu is the creation of Head Chef Chad Byrne, who believes midday meals should be invigorating and energising in order to make the most of the afternoon and evening. “Our Power Lunches alert your senses and heighten your concentration and here’s why,” explained Head Chef Chad Byrne. “Complex carbs turn to glucose which gives your body and mind the fuel they need to operate during the day.”

choices. “Everything is of the highest standard,” the judges enthused. “This, together with one of Ireland’s most stunning views, makes for a memorable breakfast experience.” And there was even more success for Killarney hotels as Michael and Geraldine Rosney’s Killeen House Hotel also picked up silverware in the three star category. Judges applauded the “charming little hotel” and especially the restaurant, Rozzers, with its cosy charm. “Breakfast, like everything else at the hotel, is very much a bespoke affair, with orders taken at the table and an emphasis on service,” the judges said. “Killeen House Hotel is a delightful and slightly quirky place where excellence abounds - and the owners’ hospitality is its most outstanding feature.”

The Power Lunch menu is available to conference and meeting groups as well as leisure and private gatherings. The interesting array of food on offer includes the Lemon Power Lunch, the Espresso Hit Lunch, the Fresh and Go Deluxe and Shells and Sushi. There was also more great news for The Hotel Europe recently as they picked up a gong at the prestigious Georgina Campbell Irish Breakfast Awards. The event, the first of its kind in Ireland, was held at the InterContinental Hotel in Dublin in association The Brehon and The Hotel Europe who were with Failte Ireland. both recently named in the top 2,500 hotels The awards are specifiin the world at the Hotels.com Loved by Guests cally designed to highlight Gold Awards. the importance of the Irish breakfast to international visitors and domestic travellers alike. They also aim to support the use of Irish foods and quality produce as part of the Irish breakfast on offer, as well as serving to celebrate and promote Irish hospitality providers and Irish food producers who excel in their delivery of high quality produce. The Hotel Europe earned a ‘Highly Commended’ award in five star hotel category. “We all expect a stay in a five star hotel to be an all-round special experience, offering the very best of the best of everything,” said Georgina Campbell. “Yet, with as many as 40 hotels listed as five star, perhaps it is not surprising that even at this level - there are variations in standards.” Standards certainly aren’t dropping at The Europe, who were praised for their im- Brehon Head Chef Chad Byrne with Anna Geary and Kevin Beasley at pressive hot and cold buffet and extensive the launch of the new Power Lunch menu. Tour De Munster Teams Up With Down Syndrome Ireland Details of the charity partnership that sees the 17th annual Tour De Munster Charity Cycle once again “share the journey” with Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) Munster Branches were officially announced last week at Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre in Tralee. This will be the 8th successive year that the national charity has been the beneficiary of popular 600km cycle around the six counties of Munster, which this year takes place from August 10-13. A new addition to this year’s Tour de Munster is the option for cyclists to select their own beneficiary and raise funds and awareness for it. Fundraising can include personal sponsorship, but also commercial sponsorship

whereby a sponsor logo placement will accompany a donation attracted by that participant. Since its inception in 2001, Tour de Munster has raised over €2.4 million for its beneficiaries, with over €1.9 million for DSI alone, with a staggering €285,655 raised in 2016. All cyclists cover their own expenses. This year’s Tour de Munster begins on Thursday, August 10t in Cork City and continues over four days around the six counties of Munster – including through Killarney - until it culminates back in Cork on Sunday, August 13. Cycling legend, Sean Kelly, who is an avid supporter of Tour de Munster, will once again cycle with the group for the full four days of the Tour.

Brassil: Killarney Needs More Ambulances Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil has called on Minister for Health Simon Harris to ensure that the Killarney area is adequately serviced by locally based ambulances. Deputy Brassil made the call following receipt of information from the HSE that shows that two out of every five ambulance call-outs in the Killarney area were serviced by ambulances from outside the catchment area. “In 2016, there were 1357 requests for ambulance support in the Killarney area with a massive 573 of these requiring the support of ambulances not based in the area,” Brassil said. “While of course there might be certain situations where an ambulance from a neighbouring area might

be best served dealing with an emergency call, when just fewer than 40% of calls are being dealt with by external ambulances, there is a problem. “It’s clear to me that there simply aren’t enough ambulances located in the Killarney area to service the growing needs of the town and surrounding communities. “We shouldn’t be relying on ambulances from other areas to look after the needs of local people. Killarney is a big town, with a large hinterland. “The HSE, the National Ambulance Service and the Minister need to commit to providing additional ambulance cover during the day and at night. There is at present just one ambulance covering the area locally. This is wholly inadequate,” concluded Brassil.

80km Run In Aid Of Two-Year-Old Faith Charity

Over 75 people will run from Killarney to Castletownroche to raise funds so a local family can finally see their daughter take her first steps. The runners are taking on the challenge of running 80km each on Saturday, April 29 to raise €100,000 for a life-changing operation. Two-year old Faith Browne from Cork has spastic diplegia cerebal palsy, which means she cannot walk, crawl or even sit up unassisted. Faith also has a rare hearing condition called Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD). After tirelessly searching for a treatment, Faith’s parents, Lisa Browne and Dave Carroll have found an operation in St Louis Hospital, Missouri that specialises in helping patients with spastic cerebral palsy move independently. The operation, called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), treats muscle stiffness in cerebral pal-

sy by separating the rootlets in the spine. This, teamed with intensive physiotherapy three to four times a week, will help Faith to finally walk, skip and play like her older sister Lydia. The €100,000 will cover the operation in St Louis Hospital and pay for four weeks accommodation, flights and intensive physio in Missouri as well as two to three years private physio and equipment after the operation. Faith’s family have received generous donations from people around the country so far, including Irish footballer James McClean who donated €1000, however they are long way off the amount needed for Faith’s operation and follow-up treatment. “We have received so many generous donations so far, however we have a long way to go. The 80km run will

hopefully raise awareness of our fundraiser for Faith. We all just want Faith to live a pain free, independent life one-day and this operation in St Louis is what we’re counting on to transform little Faith’s life for the better, said Michaela Browne, Faith’s cousin. “To see Faith walk, skip and dance one day would be a dream come true for us all.” Runners from a number of athletic clubs are taking part in the ‘80k in One Day’ run from Killarney to Faith’s home in Castletownroche, Cork on April 29. Skellig Michael

Set For Extra 150 Visitors Per Day

Inset: Photos of the recent rockfall on Skellig Michael. Officials are hopeful that the island will be open to the public on May 14 as planned.

A boost in the number of licensed boats is expected to allow around 150 extra bold travellers to visit Skellig Michael every single day. Following an open competition where interested parties were examined and assessed by an independent panel, the Office of Public Works announced the award of thirteen permits for boatmen. A total of 22 applicants submitted papers for the competition and the OPW stated that they were happy that the individuals selected will be able to offer an excellent service to visitors when the season starts shortly. Boatmen had previously operated under a scheme initially introduced in 1994 which ensured that Operator numbers were strictly controlled to avoid overpressure on the Island and its famous early Christian Monastic settle-

ment. Under this legacy arrangement, the right to land passengers at Skellig Michael was reserved to a number of specific boatmen nominated annually by the OPW and these individuals operated the system for many years on this basis. The OPW announced in 2016 that it was moving progressively to replace this system with a new model that allowed a greater range of operators the chance to compete for the permits. The process of introducing the new system began in 2016 when an initial pilot competition for two permits was completed. The announcement this week of the nomination of a further thirteen permit holders will therefore bring the total number of permits to fifteen, which is the maximum sustainable

Killarney Youngster Gets Munster Call-Up Talented Killarney athlete Craig McKenzie-Vass is the pride of Killarney Rugby Football Club having earned himself a call-up to the West Munster U-15 training programme. “Apart from Craig’s excellent ball skills and physicality, as well as his work off the ball, his attitude to both training and competitive outings is fantastic,” said coach Tom Campbell. “Craig is an extremely charismatic, outgoing and popular player, and if he continues on the path he is going may well progress to the very top level. His

coaches and teammates we wish Craig all the best,” he added. Craig will be hoping to impress his coaches at the exclusive programme which takes place over the summer months.

number allowed. All permits will now move to a threeyear rotation and a fresh competition will be held after every third season when all permits will be renewed and other operators get a fresh opportunity to enter the business. The successful operators and their vessels who were nominated will, once the relevant standstill period has been completed in two weeks’ time, be finally confirmed and will then be in a position to begin to carry passengers when the visitor season starts. Interest in the historic site has increased significantly since it appeared in the latest Star Wars movie. The news of the new permits comes just a few weeks after a major rockfall was discovered on the island. The OPW insists that good progress has

been made in dealing with the rockfall. “The specialist safety access team who were on the island last week have surveyed all of the slopes concerned and have satisfactorily resolved all of the areas where there was a suspicion of loose material,” a spokesperson said. “At this stage, no large material remains to threaten the Lighthouse Road, though it is evident that, as conditions remain very dry, there is still a possibility that the actions of burrowing birds in particular may continue to dislodge small material from the mountainside.” They added that the OPW was “cautiously optimistic’ that Skellig Michael will open to the public on schedule on May 14. The OPW will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates in due course.

Speed Networking Event Aims To Boost Local Business The brightest and the best of the Killarney business world will descend upon the Dromhall Hotel on May 4 as the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce hosts a speed networking event aimed at developing business within the town. “We’re trying to keep as much business at home as possible,” Chamber President Paul O’Neill said. “The event is naturally open to Chamber members but also to non-members as well; any business or service that are looking to make contacts and to introduce their business to other local businesspeople.” The unique format will afford participants the opportunity to meet and find out about a wide variety of entre-

preneurs and their operations. “Each person will get a short intro period to speak about their business,” Paul explained. “Then you move on to the next person. “It should be a bit of fun. It will be a good way to meet new people and hopefully do some business.” Anyone interested in attending should contact 064 6637928 or email chamber@killarney.ie. Registration on the night is at 6.30pm with the event scheduled to kick off at 7pm. Tickets are available for €20 to Chamber members and €25 to non-members, which includes a meal and a glass of wine. Not Enough Wheelchair Accessible Taxis

Killarney Councillor Mick Gleeson has called on the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross to examine the apparent lack of wheelchair accessible taxis in Ireland. He also said that if taxi owners who have received the relevant grants refuse to pick up those with disabilities, their licenses should be reviewed. Speaking at the monthly Kerry County Council meeting, Cllr Gleeson said that the situation nationally was “totally unsatisfactory”. “It has been rightly said that society can best be judged on how well it cares and caters for those who are less well able to care for themselves due to age, illness or disability,” he said. “There are few as disadvantaged as people who wish to travel somewhere but are unable to do so because they have a degree of incapacity that prevents them from driving or availing of standard public transport. “It is to overcome that disadvantage

that some taxi owners have been allocated grants to adapt their vehicles to make them wheelchair accessible. There are in Kerry quite a few such taxis. “Sadly, however, it is quite often the experience of people with disability who call for a taxi that no such appropriate vehicle is available at that time. The reason for the taxi being unavailable is usually because the vehicle is said to be on an errand. “That reply suggests that either there are not enough wheelchair accessible taxis or else taxi drivers do not wish to have to transport wheelchair users.” He went on to say that Minister Ross should look into the issue with a view to ensuring equality of treatment for all and especially for those who are disadvantaged due to disability. “If taxi owners who have received the adaptation grant habitually refuse to facilitate those with disability,” he continued, “then their licence needs to be reviewed.”

superb addition to the town’s existing retail offering,” Area Manager Colin Davidson said. “I’d like to welcome locals in the area to join us on May 5 to celebrate the opening of our new store and browse our fantastic selection of spring/summer fashion and homeware collections. “Our first customers have the chance to snap up a goody bag and take part in our competition to find the hidden vouchers.” The new store will feature some of The Edinburgh Woollen Mill’s most sought after men’s and ladies wear including Country Rose, Isle, Honor Millburn, and One Valley, as well as a full range of gifts and accessories. This is beneficial to both SVP and to the sellers who can effortlessly donate items rather than lugging them home. Angela Nagle runs the Munster-based business and, as a budget aware mother herself, she spotted the opportunity for events to buy and sell pre-loved baby goods. With 50 events in Munster now under their belt and over 200 customers at each show, they can safely say that a new parent can save as much as €1,000 on the cost of basic new baby items. The Baby Market is currently running events in Killarney, Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Carlow and Navan, with

events also planned for Cavan. Sellers can rent a stall to sell their own items for €30, or individual items can be dropped off and sold for a 25% commission. For full details, check out www.babymarket.ie or e-mail Angie at info@babymarket.ie.

Memorial

New Kerry Mass For Fallen Bikers There will be a memorial mass for all fallen bikers this July in Kerry. The event, which will take place at the Church of the Assumption in Moyvane on July 15, will give people from Kerry and the wider Munster area the opportunity to pay tribute to their late comrades. The idea came about when organiser Eileen O’Flaherty travelled with her partner to Monaghan for a similar mass. “The mass in Monaghan is supposed to cover all of Ireland,” Eileen said. “But it’s quite a distance to travel for anyone in the south. We were the only ones from this side of the country who went up to it.” They were so impressed with the mass they

felt that they had to do something similar a bit closer to home. “We put a committee together and decided to organise one down here,” she said. “We approached the organisers up in Monaghan to ask if they’d mind if we had one in Kerry, and obviously they had no problem with it.” The mass has been promoted in Limerick, Clare, Cork and Kerry, so the organisers are hoping for a good turnout on the day. There will also be a special candle-lighting service to honour loved ones. “If you’re coming, you can order candles through us,” Eileen explained. “They’ll have names printed on them and before the mass commences, a family member will be taking up their own loved one’s candle.”

These wonderful events have turned into a bargain hunter’s paradise for budget conscious parents who still insist on high quality. The show will have over 20 stalls with top quality preloved baby, children and maternity gear. “I’m expecting my second baby in a few months and I came home with everything I needed! I saved over €400!” said satisfied customer Laura O’Leary. The Baby Market events also support the local St Vin-

Don’t put all your Eggs in one Basket! Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Advisor, Eoin Liston, Premier Financial Services, discusses diversification in your investments. We have all heard this phrase in some context over our lifetimes. In the context of investments it is used as an analogy for Investment Diversification. Diversification is a technique that aims to reduce Investment risk by allocating investments among various Financial Asset Classes ( Equities, Bonds, Property Cash & alternatives), industries and other categories.

The high price of bad timing. Research data

from DALBAR shows that the decisions investors make about diversification within and across asset classes and trying to time when to get into or out of the market, cause them to generate far lower returns than the overall market.

Why you diversify? The

should

goal of diversification is not necessarily to boost performance—it won’t ensure gains or guarantee against losses. But once you choose to target a level of risk based on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility, diversification may provide the potential to improve returns for that level of risk.

Rebalancing Diversification is not a one-time task.

Once you have a target mix, you need to keep it on track with periodic checkups and rebalancing. If you don’t rebalance, a good run in stocks could leave your portfolio with a risk level that is inconsistent with your goal and strategy.

Investing is an ongoing process. You need to create

a plan, choose appropriate investments, and then conduct regular checkups to keep your portfolio on track. Here are the three steps to do just that: 1. Know your target investment mix If you haven’t already done so, choose a mix of stocks, bonds, and short-term investments that you consider appropriate for your investing goals. Take into account your financial situation, tolerance for volatility, and when you will need the money you are investing. 2. Review your portfolio regularly We suggest you or an investment professional monitor your asset mix at least annually, or whenever your financial circumstances change, and rebalance your portfolio as needed.

3. Rebalancing when needed There are a variety of ways to rebalance your portfolio. One is to sell those asset classes you currently have too much of and reinvest the proceeds in those that fall short of your target. Gardaí Want The Right To Grow Beards Comment

Words: Adam Moynihan

Gardaí have called on the powers that be to change long-standing rules which forbid the growth of facial hair. On the final day of the Garda Representative Association, which has been the focus of intense media attention due to a string of major controversies, things took a slightly more trivial turn when Kildare rep John-Joe O’Connell tabled a motion on the right to facial hair. “It’s a fact of life men grow hair on their faces,” O’Connell argued. Asking garda delegates to back the proposal, he quipped: “I promise it will grow on you.” The jokes weren’t finished there as Sligo-Leitrim’s Jack Kellliher also spoke up in favour of the mo-

tion. “It’s not like we want to reunite the Dubliners,” he said. Perhaps understandably, given everything that has come to light recently, Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan said changing this partuicular rule was not high on her list of priorities. In fairness to the gardaí in question, it does seem like a fairly outdated rule, especially considering how popular facial hair has become over the past few years. Policemen are permitted to grow beards in many jurisdictions worldwide. In fact, officers in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh are actually offered cash incentives (an

extra 30 rupees per month) to grow a moustache as their bosses believe it makes them better equipped to carry out their duties. It might be a bit cheeky for gardaí in Ireland to ask for a payrise just to grow a beard, but maybe the Commissioner could take a leaf out of the Royal Navy’s book. A sailor who wants to cultivate a full beard must submit a form requesting ‘permission to stop shaving’. He then has two weeks to ‘grow a full set’ before presenting himself to the Master at Arms, who decides if the beard is respectable enough to keep. That would, at least, guarantee a high standard of beards amongst our police force.

Trump Plans To Reform US Tax System

ternational advantage for the Irish economy. The US administration has also promised to introduce a one-off “repatriation rate” that would be offered to US companies to move profits back to the United States, targeting companies such as Apple who have cash piles of billions outside the US. The US treasury secretary argues that the dramatic cut in corporate tax could lead to over $2 trillion in lost revenue over 10 years but would be compensated by economic growth. The proposed import tax could hit billions of dollars worth of pharmaceutical and medical products that are shipped each year from Ireland to the US. While the proposed change might not threaten current US companies based here, it could very much effect future FDI.

Targeting companies such as Apple

Trump has proposed one of the biggest US tax system reforms in decades, stating he will cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 15% in an effort to “unleash” growth in the economy. The proposal still needs to be approved by Congress but if passed it could have a significant impact on US foreign direct investment into Ireland, potentially cancelling out Ireland’s competitive advantage on corporate tax. Minister for Finance Michael Noonan responded cautiously. “We really don’t know where it will land until we see the detail of it,” he said, before adding that it remained to be seen whether any rate reduction would be permanent or temporary. A 15% rate would be close to Ireland’s 12.5% corporation tax rate, a level viewed as a key in-

Kenny: No Change To Our Corporation Tax Enda Kenny has said that Ireland would not be changing its corporate tax rates after the Trump administration proposed one of the biggest reforms of the US tax system in decades. Attending a jobs announcement in Dublin on Thursday, Mr Kenny said: “It is a matter of national competence. We will not be changing our corporate tax rate.” “I’m happy to note that the American adminis-

tration has not put tariffs on imports into America, therefore on exports from Ireland, and that’s an important situation.” Mr Kenny said US companies were attracted to Ireland because of “the quality of the talent pool”, and the Irish education system was “nimble and flexible enough to meet the challenge”. Let me tell you, there will be no change to our corporation tax.

Maternity Hospital Saga ‘Like An Episode Of Father Ted’

Can I See Your Driver’s License & Payslip Sir?!

Irish motorists could face speeding fines based on their salaries under the new Road Safety proposals. Currently the speeding fine is fixed but under the new proposal a driver earning €50,000 a year salary would face a fine of €1,000 based on income. According to the Road Safety Authority the income-linked system is being seriously considered and is expected to be submitted to the Department of Transport soon. This proposed system is currently in place in Finland. A Finnish businessman named Reima Kuisla was recently caught going 65 in a 50mph zone in his home country. Currently in Ireland this would be a fixed fine of €80. But after Finnish police were ‘finished’ with Mr Kuisla, the amount that he was required to pay was €54,000 under Finland’s salary based system.

Mr Kuisla’s declared income was €6.5 million per year. In 2002, a Nokia executive was fined €94,500 for going 45 in a 30mph zone on his motorcycle and the NHL player Teemu Selanne incurred a €35,780 fine two years previous. In Finland there is no ceiling on the fines themselves but is taken as a constant proportion of income whether you make €80,000 a year or €800,000. Income-based fines could introduce fairness to a legal system that shows bias to income levels, but points are points no matter how much you earn. In my opinion this offers little in the way of sorting the speeding issue but is a good way of introducing another indirect tax. However, if you are Mr Kuisla and you can afford it, will it change your driving habits?

The controversy surrounding the proposed move of the National Maternity Hospital took another dramatic twist on Thursday as former master of the NMH Dr Peter Boylan resigned from the executive board. Speaking to the Pat Kenny show on Newstalk he explained his decision. “I can’t remain a member of a board which is so blind to the consequences of its decision to transfer sole ownership of the hospital to the religious Sisters of Charity and so deaf to the concerns of the public which it serves,” he said. Later, he told RTE that the situation was “like an episode of Father Ted.” Like many independent observers, Boylan had voiced his concerns about the involvement of the Sisters of Charity at the new site at St Vincent’s Elm Park, specifically how their Catholic ethos might potentially interfere with the independent operation of a maternity hospital. “It’s been said that the nuns are not going to run the hospital - that’s absolutely correct,” he conceded. “I’ve never suggested that they would run the hospital, but they own the hospital, they own the company that runs it and they have undue representation on the board.” Inset: Dr Peter Boylan.

Chernobyl Victims ‘Not Forgotten’ On the 31st anniversary of the nuclear reactor tragedy in Chernobyl, President Michael D Higgins paid tribute to the victims of what he called “a dark day in human history”. He also hailed Chernobyl Children International, the humanitarian organisation founded in 1991 by Irish woman Adi Roche, as “one of the leading advocates for the support of the children who were affected by

15% Of College Students Don’t Make 2nd Year 6,200 third-level students did not progress to their second year, according to a new report from the Higher Education Authority. The report, carried out in 2014/15, also revealed that students in level 6 and level 7 courses were more likely to drop out. The dropout rate for construction-related courses was 28%, while for teachers it was just 4%.

the Chernobyl disaster across the stricken regions”. “Last year Adi Roche passionately addressed the United Nations General Assembly… calling on The UN to formally declare April 26 as International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, to provide a lasting legacy of hope to say to future generations of victims ‘You are not alone - you are not forgotten.’”

Le Pen’s Party Accused Of €5m European Parliament Fraud The European Parliament has accused French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen’s party of defrauding €5m in expenses, more than twice an initial estimate. Funds meant for parliamentary assistants went to pay off staff for party work in France between 2012 and 2017.

The allegations, which Ms Le Pen denies, have triggered an investigation in France. In March, Ms Le Pen invoked her MEP’s immunity in refusing to submit to questioning by investigating magistrates. Her chief of staff and another party official have been charged with concealment.

atios, along with decks, are the workhorses of outdoor entertaining. Although many factors affect the success of a patio, the most important consideration is its location. A patio's site affects how much it is used and influences how well it serves the intended purpose. If the patio is for outdoor dining, having it close to the house - and kitchen - increases the likelihood of its being used. A spot that is convenient to the kitchen may have too much or too little sun or an unpleasant view. Wind, sound, and privacy should also be considered. You may be able to screen the unattractive views, add shade, or remove limbs to bring sunlight into the area. Consider the view from where you will be sitting. If the view is a problem, an attractive fence or trellis can be a quick solution. The design of a patio should take into account the style of the house and the surrounding garden, and the purpose the patio is to serve. Size matters! A large patio is expensive and may not be necessary if you plan only intimate gatherings with family or a few friends. However, if you like large parties, a bigger patio may be a worthwhile investment. As a general rule, a patio is open and exposed; it visually spills into the surrounding areas. To avoid feeling exposed, consider adding a pergola or other overhead structure to give the patio a sense of containment. Add interest to a patio by having it slightly elevated or sunken; don’t forget drainage if part or all your patio is below the surrounding grade. Sometimes paving a narrow side yard or other small area can turn an otherwise unused spot into a functional patio. Don’t forget some space for potted plants to add colour.

ake your sunroom, garden room and orangery work harder for you. Having recently extended our kitchen/living room by adding an orangery, we wanted to utilize this room all year round so we decided to include a gas fire in our plans. This was one of the best investments we’ve ever made in our home, giving this open plan area a focal point but also enough heat to ensure this room is used all year. So if you're in the process of building, extending or just retrofitting a wood burning stove, or gas fire, can change the way you live in your home for the better.

How about having some fun with the accent colours? ''Harissa'' by Dulux Signature range

T ''0695 Indian Necklace'' by Colourtrend

he accent colour is the one that adds a finishing touch to the scheme. They are the colours that can be bold and vivid, but also more toned down darker neutrals would work as accent colours. The trick is to use them sparingly. It is like the quirky handbag or a pair of earrings that complete the look and add the final ''wow factor''. This year watch out for red-orange and mustard, the warmer hues are making a comeback. The turquoise and mint green look well in the garden area and also on the front door. The fresh blue-green lifts spirits, it is considered to be an inspirational colour. The off-black appears softer to the eye than the pure black, you can actually never see a pure black in nature. The off-black can be combined with smoky navy for a sophisticated look. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, 087 282 6902, kadribormeister@gmail.com

Sure to be seen on all the best patios this year, wicker is the trend for the last few years and it's not going anywhere soon. It adds a touch of contrast and coziness to outdoor areas. Another big trend is colour. Add pops of colour like the blue bistro set from MD O’Sheas. Amazing! Boyles of Killorglin also has a great choice of outdoor furniture. There's something for every taste. If your garden furniture is in good nick but just looking a little tired (and you're feeling energetic) why not paint it? Little Greene do a selection of outdoor paints available from Corcoran’s. Cuprinol garden shades also have a great choice of colours available from Boyles of Killorglin and MD O'Shea. The white room in Kenmare also stock Autentico which can even paint plastic if you're so inclined.

Garden Magic Enjoy The Opportunities On Your Doorstep Living here in the Southwest is truly wonderful for the gardener, says Debby Looney

WHERE else in Ireland are there such shows of azaleas and rhododendrons? Azaleas are a section of the Rhododendron genus, and in most gardening books they are now listed with rhodos. All require acidic soil, which is fertile, rich in organic matter and free draining. These requirements (except pH) are typical for most woodland plants, which rhodos are. It is difficult to choose from the enormous range which is available, but there are some tried and trusted varieties such as the dwarf R. ‘Baden-Baden’, bearing large bright red flowers, or R. ‘Blue Tit’ which is quite hardy and is covered in blue flowers early on. Deciduous rhododendrons, formerly known as Azalea mollis, are also lovely, the flowers often opening before the leaves. ‘Fireball’ and ‘Golden Eagle’ are two beauties. If you have space for a large specimen, ‘Moser’s Maroon’ has very deep red flowers, striking! There is a clematis for every season, and today I saw two absolute must-haves! One had beautiful buttery blooms, five inches across, called ‘Guernsey Cream’. The other was a crisp white tinged with pink and green, named ‘Miss Bateman’. Both are well worth looking out for! Apple trees are enjoying a rise in popularity, partly thanks to the Coronet range, and also thanks to an increasing awareness of chemicals used and the carbon footprint of produce. Coronet apple trees are specifically created for small gardens, and pots. They remain miniature, as they are grafted onto a non-vigorous rootstock. Often they are “family trees”, that is, two or even three varieties of tree are grafted onto the one stem. This makes pollination a sure thing! Almost all apple trees require pollination from another tree to set fruit, so if you are planning to plant them, or maybe you have some which are not fruiting well, bear in mind to plant trees which flower at the same time! Apple trees are “grouped” according to their flowering time. In Ireland we would not plant many of group 1, as their blossoms may be damaged by frost. Trees in group 2 include ‘Beauty of Bath’, ‘Egremont Russet’ and ‘Kerry Pippin’. Group 3 includes ‘Bramleys seedling’, ‘Cox’s Orange’, ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Elstar’. These two groups would be most popular in Ireland, but there are seven groups in total, so when you are buying the simplest thing is to buy two which are both flowering! Apple trees, and most fruit trees are a long-term investment, it takes a few years for them to really crop well. However, before you know it you will be drying them, preserving them and gifting them, as we all know, time flies!!! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

The Rally of the Lakes have some of the most spectacular rally stages in Europe which provide the ultimate test for competitors. The winners list of the Rally of the Lakes reads like a “who’s who” of Irish rallying and to become a winner of this special event ensures your place in that privileged group that includes Billy Coleman, Bertie Fisher, Austin McHale and Kris Meeke to name but a few. Thousands of enthusiasts will be flocking to Killarney to watch many of the

big stars of rallying in action. The Rally of the Lakes is firmly established as one of Ireland’s premier events and it is estimated to be worth in excess of €10 million to the local economy. TV coverage alone is broadcast in 38 countries with an estimated 30 million household subscribers. Clerk of the course, Anthony O’Connor, remarked: “This exposure is fantastic for Killarney and fantastic for the Rally of the Lakes. It hugely increases our attraction as an international event for competitors and spectators.” Action gets underway with a ceremonial start in the town centre tonight with a family entertainment evening where

fans can meet the leading drivers while watching action from previous events on giant screens set to a back drop of live music. In excess of 130 crews from international, national and junior categories competing in a wide variety of cars will commence early on the Saturday morning with the iconic Moll’s Gap stage, followed by the Tim Healy Pass and service on Castletownbere Pier. Then on to the famous stages of Cods Head and Ardgroom with a repeat run over the Healy Pass and back to service. Cods Head and Ardgroom are repeated with the short Kilmackillogue Harbour stage to finish off the day.

Sunday morning’s action starts once again with Moll’s Gap, followed by service at the Liebherr car park. Then the crews will complete a loop of three stages: Kilgobnet, Caragh Lake and Rockfield, before heading into service again at Liebherr. This loop is again repeated with plenty of spectator-friendly access points in Kilgobnet and Rockfield. The crews will arrive back to the finishing ramp at the Gleneagle Hotel at approximately 5.30pm for celebrations and champagne. The event is well supported by the local crews this year with 22 crews in the main field and a third of the Junior category filled by local crews.

Rally Argentina This weekend sees Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle compete in YPF Rally Argentina, round five of the World Rally Championship. Winners in 2015, they are hoping for a strong result again this weekend. Seventh on the road for the first day will be an advantage over Ogier, the championship leader who will be sweeping the road up front. Kris and Paul didn’t compete on this event last year due to Citroën not running a full programme but this surface suits both car and driver. One of the highlights of the WRC season, Rally Argentina is eagerly anticipated by the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT. Citroën has won Rally Argentina as a WRC event ten times in the last twelve years. The team, however, will be on edge hoping

that a repeat of their mechanical failure in Corsica will be a distant memory. Meeke and Nagle’s teammate, fellow Irish driver Craig Breen, will be competing there for the first time. After three top five finishes in as many appearances this season, Craig will need to get his bearings on this new surface before trying to get close to the leading crews. If he manages to keep out of trouble, he will almost certainly finish high up the standings. The history of Rally Argentina suggests that endurance and consistency are often rewarded!

Support Groups In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels LUKE 24:13-35: Jesus joined the despondent disciples and listened to them. ‘We had hoped …’ When you have been upset or disappointed, who has joined you along the road? To whom have you been able to pour out your heart? Who was a ‘Jesus person’ to you, listening to you in respectful silence? To whom have you been a Jesus person? Jesus then helps them to see things in another light by opening the scriptures to them. When did you have the experience of finding your heart ‘burning within you’ with new hope for the future? Who/what helped you to change after a setback? The disciples invite Jesus to join them at table – there follows a recognition of who he is. We meet many people on the road of life. Usually we meet and pass on. Occasionally we meet someone whom we invite into our homes, into our hearts, in a deeper way, in a way we had not done before. With whom has this happened for you? Where in these relationships have you experienced the presence of God or of Jesus? After Jesus had gone the disciples went to bring the good news to others. When have you met others who told you what happened to them along their road? What effect did this sharing have on you? When have you done this with others? When was such a conversation ‘good news’ for you or others?

Musings

John Byrne OSA, Veritas

POUNDING hearts, wounded hearts and burning hearts … the image of the human heart permeates the beautiful Easter Gospel of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. It is a very human story, full of pathos; stylized in pattern, and suggesting a Eucharistic celebration. The disciples come with their questions and doubts; the Scriptures are recited; words of clarification and instruction are exchanged on the road; and finally, the moment of recognition comes in the context of a meal. The stranger on the road to Emmaus takes the skepticism and curiosity of the disciples and weaves them into the fabric of the Scripture. Jesus challenges them to reinterpret the events of the past days in light of the Scriptures. At table in Emmaus, the disciples’ hearts began to gradually burn within them as they came to understand with their minds the truth about the suffering Messiah. The ‘Good News’ descended from their head to their heart, and they experienced that strange and wonderful feeling of their hearts gradually on fire. The analogy of the ‘burning hearts’ is the only way for them to adequately describe their recognition of the Lord. I remember a beautiful phrase of the great French Catholic author of the last century, François Mauriac: ‘If you are friends with Christ many others will warm themselves at your fire … On the day when you no longer burn with love, many will die of the cold.’ Father Thomas Rosica, Veritas

The Deep End

THIS weekend’s Gospel finds Jesus’ friends downcast and confused at all that happened in their world. His death had devastated them; rumours of his resurrection amazed and confused them. Into their sadness and confusion Jesus comes; walking with them, talking with them even though they didn’t recognise him and yet they said later ‘didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road?’ It’s a reminder to us that he is always with us as believers even if we don’t recognise him. Sometimes he speaks to us through the love and kindness of others; the friendly word or gesture, the willingness to listen, the acceptance of us for all our faults and failings. There is surely someone in all our lives who makes us feel better just for knowing them; they reflect God’s goodness and love and care in the simplest ways. The great gift that Jesus left his followers to remind them of his constant presence was the Eucharist when he promised to be with us wherever it was celebrated in memory of him. And when we have listened and nourished ourselves in communion with each other we go to bring this word and this nourishment to others. Because the religion that Jesus Christ taught was one of giving and forgiving; of living life to the full and making the most of each day. In the words of St Catherine of Siena, ‘Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.’ Padraig O’Connor

Kerry Companies Invited To Enterprise Skellig Rock Season Ireland ‘Prepare For Brexit’ Roadshow ENTERPRISE IRELAND has announced details of the first in a series of nationwide ‘Prepare for Brexit’ roadshows, which will take place at the Maryborough Hotel, Cork on Wednesday, May 3, from 8am-10.30am. Part of Enterprise Ireland’s #PrepareforBrexit campaign, the Cork roadshow will feature speakers from SMEs, large companies and innovative start-ups, along with members of Enterprise Ireland’s Global Team and Brexit Unit, moderated by Broadcaster Jonathan Healy. Designed to encourage SMEs to prepare for a hard Brexit, the event will provide a platform for robust discussion, information sharing and practical advice around the key issues facing Irish companies. The roadshow is free of charge but registration is essential. Register at BrexitUnit@enterprise-ireland.com Central to the roadshow is Enterprise Ireland’s ‘Brexit SME Scorecard’, a new interactive online platform which can be used by all Irish companies to self-assess their exposure to Brexit under six business pillars. Based on answers supplied by the user, the Score-

card generates an immediate report which contains suggested actions and resources, and information on events for companies to attend, to prepare for Brexit. The platform can be accessed at www.prepareforbrexit.ie By completing the online questionnaire, the Brexit SME Scorecard will provide companies with an assessment of their preparedness under six key pillars - Business Strategy, Operations, Innovation, Sales and Marketing, Finance and People Management. The tool is a starting point for SME management teams looking to develop an action plan to help mitigate risks and leverage opportunities which may arise from Brexit. Over 250 companies have completed the Enterprise Ireland Brexit SME Scorecard since it was launched two weeks ago. As a next step on the road to preparing for Brexit, these regional roadshows will provide Irish companies with the opportunity to hear firsthand how other companies, of all sizes, are preparing for Brexit. Enterprise Ireland’s Global Team and Brexit Unit will give insights into the challenges and

opportunities Brexit presents, and the practical supports that are available to companies. The UK continues to be Ireland’s main trading partner and our objective is to equip our client companies to strengthen their presences in the UK, while also preparing them to look at diversifying into new international markets. While the SME Scorecard is available to all companies, Enterprise Ireland client exporting companies that utilise the Brexit Scorecard will then be able to engage with the agency’s experts both domestically and through the overseas offices in global markets. Enterprise Ireland will also provide funding up to the value of €5,000 to exporting clients to support the development of a business action plan. Enterprise Ireland will then work with these companies on a one-to-one basis to support the implementation of the plan. Further ‘Prepare for Brexit’ roadshows are planned for Galway, Waterford and Monaghan. Martin Corkery, South and South East Regional Director, Enterprise Ireland, via email

I HAVE again called on the OPW to extend the tourist season to the Skelligs. The Skellig Rock, which is a World Heritage Site, is one of Ireland’s finest tourist attractions and should be open from the beginning of April to the end of October, to visitors who come from all corners of the world. You can get very good weather in April and October and the OPW should play its part by opening the Skellig Rock for business and extending the tourist season.” I believe the Skellig boatmen should be allowed bring visitors to the Skelligs in April and October. We are the number-one tourist county after all and it would be good for the local economy. The Skellig boatmen’s livelihoods are very much weather dependent and they can lose a lot of days between May and September, due to the inclement climate. The cost to the South Kerry economy due the closure of the Skelligs is in excess of €2 million, based on an average spend of €190 per visitor (cost of boat hire, food, accommodation, travel, etc) and allowing for a 50 % landing rate during this time. The changing of the season from the traditional season to the most recent one, May 14-October 2, imposed by the OPW, adds further hardships to an already disadvantaged area. The Minister needs to intervene here as a matter of extreme urgency and also take into consideration the success of the Wild Atlantic Way and reopen the Skelligs to all those who wish to visit our county’s main visitor attraction. Elite Universal Contour Wrap

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains how this special treatment improves skin tone and texture • • •

Inch loss Anti cellulite Toning

The combination of our Classic Clay Solution and specialist body wrapping techniques draw out toxins whilst compressing the soft fatty tissues to create instant inch loss and firming effect. Theses effects are enhanced with our Chrysalis machine using faradic current with heated blanket. The instant heat relaxes the body and quickly opens the skins pores, allowing the Classic Clay Solution to draw out the toxins more rapidly and boost the blood flow. Whilst this process is underway, the electrical muscle stimulation contracts muscle tissue to help break

down cellulite and tone and tighten the skin. The effects allow for more oxygenation of tissues and lymphatic exchange, increasing the detoxification process. Whilst this process is underway, the electrical muscle stimulation contracts muscle tissue to help break down cellulite and tone the skin. While one wrap gives great results , it’s recommended to have a course of 3 wraps.

The Universe Is A Strange And Wonderful Place The universe is a primarily empty space with a smattering of galaxies scattered about, says Trevor O’Donoghue It all started with a big bang 13.8 billion years ago. Pic: Nasa

EACH galaxy has hundreds of billions of stars and the universe itself is so vast that it has one hundred billion galaxies. The enormity and scale is impossible to get our heads around and it takes rare geniuses like Einstein, Newton and even Hawking who have the uncanny ability to visualise, scrutinise and probe the depths and workings of the universe. Even the nearest star to us is 4 light years away, which in layman’s terms is a staggering 40 trillion kilometers, that is 40 with 12 zeros after it. The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977 to study the solar system travels at 62,000 km/h. At this speed, it would take 73,000 years to get to the nearest star and a cool 640 million years to get to the centre of our galaxy! It gets even stranger, the universe is expanding, it’s getting bigger and bigger. Conversely last week it was smaller and even smaller still two weeks ago. Follow this logic through and we arrive at the big

bang. A point in space and time when the universe burst into existence and filled the nothingness with matter and time. Since that point 13.8 billion years ago the universe has been rapidly expanding and continues to do so, driven apart by a mysterious force called dark energy. Our Sun and solar system including Earth sparked into life 4.5 billion years ago, formed from clouds of gas and dust

from previously burnt out stars. You and I, and the world around us is made from chemical elements forged in the nuclear furnace of these stars when they were alive, and from the heavier elements made when they blew themselves to bits billions of years ago. And that is just the stuff we can see. The universe of normal matter and energy that we can observe, accounts for a mere

5 % of the total universe. Dark matter, stuff we can’t see directly or don’t know what it is exactly, makes up 25 % of the universe, with the aforementioned mysterious dark energy making up the remaining 70 %. In 1927, the biologist JBS Haldane summed it up quiet nicely. “My own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose”.

Grace Notes Singing From The Heart Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on a very special Britain’s Got Talent performance.

I always say that it’s a great thing when a group of strangers come together to make music. This could be in a choir or an orchestra or a folk group. When people make music together it creates an unspoken bond between them. They feel as though they share one voice, even if just for one song. I have recently realised that it can be even more powerful when a group of people with something very important in common come together in one voice. In the first episode of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent something very special happened. A choir walked on stage with one thing in common and one very important goal. The vast majority of the choir’s members have loved ones who are missing and the others

work for the organistation who helps people in this awful situation. Their objective was to get the names and faces of these missing people out to the world on a large screen behind them as they sang. This just shows how powerful music can be. I was moved to tears as I heard the voices and saw the faces of these people who are so so desperate to see the people they love again. To sing beautifully, in my eyes, is to sing from the heart and these people’s hearts are broken in the same places. The unity in their sound is there because they are singing from the deepest part of themselves and they are quite literally calling out for help. I hope with all my heart that something good can come from this incredible display of love and hope and courage. Music truly is healing. It is magic. It can save you in your darkest hour.

Late Murphy Leveller Keeps Legion Alive Dingle and Legion will have to do it all again, writes Adam Moynihan

YOUNGSTER Finbarr Murphy was the hero in Derreen on Sunday last as he earned Legion a replay with the very last kick of the game. Murphy had only been introduced in extra time and was yet to touch the ball when his side were awarded a free around 45 yards from goal. There were more experienced free-takers on the pitch but Murphy insisted upon taking it. He duly converted and Legion live to fight another day. It was a really competitive game that ebbed and flowed and in the end a draw was probably a fair result. Legion got off to the perfect start when James O’Donoghue goaled early on but his Kerry teammate Paul Geaney cancelled it out moments later with a goal of his own. Conor Geaney got the game’s first point with a free before Tom Moriarty equalized and Legion went on to kick the next three scores, Donal Lyne, O’Donoghue and Conor Keane all finding the target to give Legion an early three-point lead. Paul Geaney, who was shadowed by Danny Sheahan for the duration, was on top form and kicked three unanswered points to close the gap. When Tomás Sheehy opened his account with a well-taken score in the 22nd minute, Dingle were ahead. Two more from Geaney, both with his “weaker” left foot, pushed the lead out to three and James O’Donoghue kicked the last point of the half to make it 1-5 to 1-7 at the break. There was a strange lull at the beginning of the second period as both sides failed to register a score for 13 minutes, but the game burst back into life when Sheehy stole in for the third goal of the day. A brace from Conor Keane and another O’Donoghue free narrowed the gap to three with ten minutes to play, but you felt Legion might need a goal if they were to get anything out of this one. They were handed a golden opportunity when Danny Sheahan went on an uncharacteristic foray forward before being hauled down inside the area. Up stepped James O’Donoghue to fire beyond Gavin Curran in the Dingle goal and tie things up. In a frantic final spell, Paul Geaney restored Dingle’s lead, Conor Keane equalised, Tom Moriarty put Legion ahead and Geaney brought Dingle level once more. Legion thought they won it when Danny Sheahan broke forward again and punted over an inspirational stoppage time point, but there was time for one final twist. Deep into additional time, Dingle broke forward and were given what was, in my admittedly biased

opinion, a very, very soft free. From there they worked it well to Mikey Geaney who kicked a superb point to send the game to extra time. The visitors put themselves in a great position by outscoring Legion 0-2 to 0-0 in the opening period of extra time, but Legion fought back well and points from Denis Sheahan and James O’Donoghue levelled the game for what seemed like the thousandth time.

There were more experienced free-takers on the pitch but Murphy insisted upon taking it

Club Championship (Round 1) Legion 2-14 Dingle 2-14

Lads were out on their feet at this stage and Paul Geaney must have felt that he had clinched the victory for Dingle when he kicked a massive point with just a couple of minutes to play. It was a typically classy score that brought his tally for the day to 1-9 (1-6 from play). It sounds strange but Danny Sheahan actually did well on him. Geaney is basically unmarkable. With 83 minutes on the clock it looked for all the world as though Legion were on their way out of the Club Championship but they managed to win a free 45 yards out to the left of the posts. Murphy confidently took the ball, placed it on the ground and split the uprights with a superb kick

that had ten yards to spare. It was no more than Legion deserved as they put in another impressive shift. Sunday’s replay in Páirc an Ághasaigh will be a big test but they should take heart from this result, coming as it does against one of the premier club teams in the county. Legion scorers: James O’Donoghue (2-4, 1 pen, 0-2f), Conor Keane (0-4, 0-2f), Tom Moriarty (0-2), Denis Sheahan (0-1), Donal Lyne (0-1), Danny Sheahan (0-1) and Finbarr Murphy (0-1f). Dingle scorers: Paul Geaney (1-9, 0-3f), Tomás Sheehy (1-1), Conor Geaney (0-2), Mikey Geaney (0-1) and Matthew Flaherty (0-1).

Glenflesk & Fossa Out, Listry & Crokes Advance Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP GLENFLESK 0-13 LAUNE RANGERS 3-07 Laune Rangers travelled to Glenflesk for this Intermediate quarter final in confident mood following their first round win over Division 1 team Milltown/Castlemaine and emerged victorious thanks to three well-timed goals. The first arrived on three minutes from Connor Clark after good work by Colm O’Shea. This gave them a one-point advantage after Jeff and Lee O’Donoghue had given Glenflesk an early lead. Glenflesk responded to the goal with a Darragh Roche point and the game was finely poised going into the tenth minute at 1-2 to 0-3 in favour of Laune Rangers when Peter Crowley struck for Rangers second goal. This rattled Glenflesk and although they dominated possession for the next ten minutes, poor shooting let them down and they only added one point from the boot of Jeff O’Donoghue. Brian O’Donoghue drove forward from wing back for a well-taken point after 22 minutes and this inspired Glenflesk to score a further three points before the half time whistle to bring the sides level. Glenflesk midfielder Padraig Healy missed a great goal chance towards the end of the half Half time score: Glenflesk 0-08, Laune Rangers 2-02. Glenflesk began the second half by taking a onepoint lead from the boot of Michael O’Shea but this was to be the last time they led as Laune Rangers began to play their best football of the day in the third quarter. They scored 1-2 without reply, the goal coming from a John Tyther penalty after Conner Clark was brought down, giving them a 3-4 to 0-10 point lead with 20 minutes still to play. Glenflesk danger men Lee O’Donoghue and Darragh Roche cut the gap to two but indiscipline in the Glenflesk defence allowed Colm O’Shea to stretch the gap to four with three points from placed balls. Jeff O’Donoghue scored his fourth point from play to reduce the gap to three with eight minutes to play but this was to be the last score of the game as Laune Rangers packed their defence. Glenflesk: Felim Jacobs, Shane Courtney, James McCarrick, Christopher O’Donoghue, Kieran A O’Donoghue, Daniel O’Brien, Brian O’Donoghue (0-1), Kieran Murphy (0-1), Padraig Healy, Danny Lucey, Jeff O’Donoghue (0-4), Michael O’Shea (0-2), Gavin Kelly, Darragh Roche (0-2), Lee O’Donoghue (0-4, 1f). Subs: Ian Roche, Ciaran O’Mahony and Donal O’Sullivan. Laune Rangers: Tony Lyons, Neil O’Brien, Johnathan Carey, Aidan Cox, Ronan Sayers, Kieran Crowley, Patrick Carey, Peter Crowley (1-0), John Sheehan, Jack O’Connor, Shane McSweeney, John Tyther (1-0 pen), David Costello, Connor Clark (1-2), Colm O’Shea, (005, 3f) Subs: Padraig Murphy, Fiachra Clifford and Michael Francis Russell. Listry 0-12 Tarbert 0-11 The Junior Club Football Championship quarter final was played in Listry on Sunday last. Listry met with Tarbert in a cracking, exciting

match with skill and enthusiasm from both teams throughout the game. Listry, however, came out the better side winning by just one point over a disappointed Tarbert side. Listry got off to a good start with Derry Ahern scoring the first point after two minutes. However Tarbert’s Gerald O’Sullivan who showed great skill throughout his game, narrowly missed a goal when the ball hit off the crossbar in the first half. He scored four points in the course of the game. Kevin Courtney, Ronan Buckley, Derry Ahern, Anthony Kennedy and Aaron McCarthy all scored points in the first half for Listry. Andrew Doherty, Gerald O Sullivan (0-2) and Cillian Langan scored lovely points for Tarbert. Listry were leading into the second half by one point, but that didn’t stop Tarbert returning after Gerald O Sullivan and Danny Wrenn both getting points back-to-back to put them ahead for the first time. The turnaround came from Aaron McCarthy fifteen minutes into the second half with a lovely point. Listry quickly got back into the game with a Ronan Buckley point. He had a great game, scoring five points in the second half. He scored the winning point from a free which put Listry ahead. Tarbert’s Kevin Enright (0-2), Mark Buckley (0-1), Gerald O’Sullivan (0-2) and Danny Wrenn (0-1) were the scorers in the second half. Listry’s Aaron McCarthy and Derry Ahern scored a point each.

three. Kieran Donaghy was well marked by Michael Moloney. Star did move out to midfield but he was no great threat there either. Much was expected of Stacks in the second half but when they created some good scoring opportunities they invariably shot some terrible wides. In fact, it was well in to injury time before substitute Mikey Collins got a point, their only score in the second half. Crokes played the possession game which was effective against an ailing Stacks side but it was not pretty to watch. Their defence was very effective as they forced Stacks into shooting wildly. A one minute silence was observed before the throw-in as a tribute to John Galvin RIP, Muckross Road. He was a former player with Sneem and with Dr Crokes and was a lifetime follower of the Crokes. Shock Kenmare created a shock when they beat Kerin’s O Rahillys 1-14 to 1-13, while the Rathmore v Kilcummin game will be played on Wednesday evening. No joy for Fossa who were pipped away to Dromid Pearses, 1-16 to 1-15.

Dr Crokes 0-10 Austin Stacks 0-4 Dr Crokes continued their supremacy over Austin Stacks with a ten points to four win. This was a very disappointing affair in front of a big crowd of spectators. Crokes lined out without five of the All-Ireland-winning side but they still dominated from the throw-in. They went five points clear at the start thanks to good control at midfield where Mike Milner and captain Daithí Casey provided plenty of possession for the forwards. Stacks had very little to offer and the game was never really a contest. The Tralee side did manage three points to leave the half-time score seven points to

smalltalk

Crokes forward Daithí Casey talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, finally winning the All-Ireland and his Muppet Show look-a-like.

Hi Daithí. Thanks for talking to us. No bother Adam.

Good result against Stacks at the weekend. Yeah. It’s good to get back at it.

Are you still buzzing from the All-Ireland?

Absolutely. It’s taken so long so it was great to finally get the monkey off our back by beating Corofin first of all, and I felt that once we got to Croke Park we were never going to lose really.

You’re playing with Athletic as well. What are your thoughts going into the last few games?

It’s great that we’re back doing well. Last year we were fighting relegation so it’s just nice to be back challenging for the league.

Which of your Crokes teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with?

Definitely Alan O’Sullivan if Liverpool were to win the league. He’s an absolute plague when it comes to Liverpool.

I didn’t cover myself in glory either. If you had to compare yourself to an athlete from another sport, who would it be? David Beckham.

For what reason?

I fancy myself as a bit of a dead ball specialist!

What are your five favourite sports in order?

Football, soccer, golf, hurling and table tennis.

Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Cycling.

What’s the best sporting moment of all time? United winning the treble.

Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder?

There’s a few. Tony Brosnan fancies himself big time. PJ Lawlor as well. He always had a girlfriend when he was younger so now that he’s single he doesn’t know what to do with himself.

Do you have any nicknames?

Who’s the biggest moaner?

Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without?

Shane Murphy since he came in. He gives out about everything.

Who’s the worst-dressed?

Fionn Fitzgerald. He’s getting better but when he was younger his style was cat.

Just Dots. Well, Daithí is actually a nickname really. David is my name but I went to the Irish school and people started calling me Daithí.

WhatsApp. I enjoy the craic in the few different groups.

Who’s the top man for the banter? Eoin Kelly. The Cutter.

What’s your most-used emoji?

Who spends the most time in the gym?

Jason Lyne lives in the gym. He’s an absolute beast. He ties weights to himself and does pull-ups.

If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for the Crokes this year, who would it be?

Shane Myers was an unreal team player.

Oh. Cute. Is that for everyone or just a special someone? That’s more for a special someone!

What’s the best show on TV?

Friends and How I Met Your Mother.

Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with besides Gooch?

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

Johnny Buckley. Gooch is sick but bar him, Johnny is number one.

Ed Sheeran – Shape of You.

Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with?

I try to sing ‘Sé mo laoch, mo Ghile Mear.

Adam Moynihan.

Besides me!

Gavin White is definitely up there. He’s a machine. Fionn as well in fairness has always been a fantastic athlete.

What would you sing at karaoke?

Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Vince Casey? Gooch probably.

What would you have for your last meal?

Chicken Maryland, fried potatoes and mushy peas.

Everyone’s favourite question: if you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? My grandfather played for Legion but…

But!

Yeah, I’d find it hard to play for another club.

What’s your proudest sporting moment?

Would you cook it yourself?

I would even though my mom does the fried potatoes better than I do.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

The Count from the Muppet Show. Or Michael Fassbender. We’ll keep it local.

There are three. Obviously the All-Ireland this year, winning the U-21 County Championship in 2011 and winning the Munster final against UCC in 2011 as well.

And can you tell me a joke?

And the most embarrassing?

I don’t know.

The 7-a-side final last year.

Gracias.

Thanks for reminding me.

Gracias!

I had twenty shots over the crossbar. It was mortifying.

What do you call a Spanish footballer with no legs?

Sound Adam!

Rugby News ...

Words: Liam Murphy

Last weekend saw a very tough weekend for the Irish provinces that were still left in Europe. Both Munster and Leinster were in action in the semi-final stages of the European Cup, or the Heineken Cup as many still fondly call it. No mean feat to be fair and it was exciting to see two Irish teams in the last four

and at the top table of European Rugby. Last Saturday, Munster hosted current European and Aviva Premiership champions Saracens at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. D4 was well and truly invaded by the 16th man as the Red Army marched on Dublin. In fact there were huge tailbacks on the M7 and M8 on the road to Dublin on Saturday morning as over 50,000 Munster fans descended upon the capital. However, the match never lived up to the hype and Rassie’s men were soundly beaten on the day with the

visitors running out winners on a 10–26 scoreline. Conor Murray was a huge loss and Duncan Williams had a tough game and kicked the ball away far too much. In the end, the team with 6 British and Irish Lions had the strength and depth to win and seemed to want it more. Leinster travelled to Lyon on Sunday to take on French side Clermont Auvergne and a pulsating semi-final took place. Leinster lost by five points in the end and came close to overturning a 15 point deficit. The try by Gary Ringrose was

worth watching the match alone. In other rugby news this week, Warren Gatland named his British and Irish Lions squad for the summer tour to New Zealand. With Munster men Conor Murray, Peter O’Mahony and CJ Stander getting the call and 11 Irish players in total named, the tour promises to be a riveting one for Irish fans. So, even though the European cup is gone, the PRO 12 reaches the business end of the season and the summer will be an exciting one for rugby fans.

Killarney Celtic are just one win away from qualifying for the FAI Senior Cup for the first time in their history. The Hoops earned a place in the qualifying round for Ireland’s most prestigious soccer tournament by making the last four of the FAI Junior Cup last month. They’ll be hoping to put the disappointment of that semi-final defeat to Sheriff behind them as they go up against Boyle Celtic of Roscommon, who themselves lost their semi-final to Evergreen of Kilkenny. It will be interesting to see how the Killarney side recover from that crushing shoot-out loss. To have their dream of playing the final

in the Aviva taken away from them in such cruel circumstances will have been very tough to take. It’ll take another huge effort to focus in and get the better of an accomplished team like Boyle. Having said that, Boyle also faltered from the spot in the last four so this match will provide both teams with a great chance to recover and get their seasons back on track. After playing that Sheriff game up in Mastergeeha, the Hoops will be hoping that real home advantage will be the deciding factor in this one. Kick-off in Celtic Park on Saturday is at 7pm.

The Community games Indoor Soccer Kerry finals for U13 boys took place in Milltown last Friday night. Fossa were one of the four teams to take part. The boys won there semi-final against Knocknagoshel 2-1. Fossa then played Duagh/Lyre in a very exciting final. After a slow start Fossa came back from 2 nil down to draw the game at full time thanks to goals from Max Leon and Darren Ryan. Extra time saw Fossa take the lead for the first time when Finn Kennelly scored in the 1st half of extra time but Duagh/Lyre equalised and with the scores locked at 3-3 it was time for the dreaded penalty shootout. Even after each team had taken 5 penalties it was still impossible to separate them but unfortunately Fossa lost in sudden death and Duagh/ lyre won the gold. Fossa boys put on a great show and did Fossa proud. Upcoming events Best of luck to the boys U12 outdoor soccer team who will be playing this Sunday in Mastergeeha.

The equaliser came midway through the second half when Mulvanney who was a constant threat in the second half was hacked down on the right wing. Training has resumed at Crokes on Monday evenings at 6.15 following the Easter break. Anyone who would like to try a unique sport is more than welcome to join us. All equipment is provided. We cater for girls from 6-16. Our under 14’s took part in a Feile qualifier final against Parnells of Tralee on Sunday last. The game was played in Blenerville. Due to scheduling conflicts, Killarney had to field a weakened team. Parnells put on a great show in the first half and our girls struggled a little with the pace of the game. However, the girls rallied at half time, and came our fighting in the second half. They got stuck in and really acquitted themselves. This was exemplified by a great goal scored by Aine Devlin after a fine individual run. There was some great defensive work in the backs led by Geraldine Murphy, Lisa Lenihan and Keelyn O’Leary. While the scoreline didn’t flatter Killarney, they girls are showing signs of progress. There was an added bonus of Kerry Camogie selectors observing the game as they search for the next generation of County players!

We also say well done to our Mens J18 Quad crew who were heat winners over Portadown, King’s Hospital and Shannon crews and to Aoife Farrell, who was second in her heat but was unlucky to miss out on the sole qualification spot in a category attracting numerous entries. Similarly, the Womens J16 Quad crew raced well in their heat finishing second to Carlow and ahead of Portadown but also missed a place in the final due to the limits of the four-lane course and multiple entries in the category. On Sunday April 23rd the Crokes girls were away to BallyDuff/Beale. Dr Crokes were seriously understrength and were no match for their opponents .They were completely overwhelmed and very heavily defeated on a score line of Ballyduff/Beale 8-5 Dr Crokes 2-1 .This was just one of those days where nothing went to plan. In the second division 1 game, Rathmore proved much too strong and experienced for a young Killarney Legion Junior side, missing a number or regulars in this game played in Derreen. Final score Rathmore 3-17 Killarney Legion 1-08. These results mean that Rathmore top the division 1 league table, with 4 league points, while both Dr Crokes and Gneeveguilla are on 2 league points going into the final round of league games. Dr Crokes play Killarney Legion and Rathmore meet Gneeveguilla in round 3. In Division 2,

visitors Spa booked their place in the final when they travelled to Kilcummin for a round 2 game, having drawn in their round 1 game against Glenflesk. Final score Spa 1-20 Kilcummin 1-10. Spa await the outcome of the round 3 game between Glenflesk and Kilcummin to find out who they will meet in the final. Kilcummin need to win while a draw would suffice to see Glenflesk through to the final. Both division 1 and division 2 finals are fixed for Tuesday 2nd May at neutral venues. East Region U16 League The last league round of games in the MD O’Shea East Region U16 League, to determine progression to semi finals and finals, are fixed for this week. Firies Coiste na Nog U13 Club Skills Finals Congratulations to our Firies Coiste na nÓg club boys; Stephen Palmer, James Horgan & Aaron Burke who put in a meticulous performance in the County’s U13 Club Skills Competition. Their efforts paid dividend as they came joint third within the fair County of Kerry. Lee Stand Football League Our assiduous U12 boys headlined the fixtures this week; both the Blue and White teams were in action last Sunday. Unfortunately, it did not go to plan for both teams; the blue troopers met a very strong Keel side; losing out 3-07 to Keels’ 5-22. Yet, all wasn’t lost as the Whites came up trumps 5-12 to 2-06. Well done to both teams on their industrious effort. The boys continue their endeavors in division 4; Firies Vs Ballydonoghue at home @ 6pm on Sunday, 30th April.

Fossa GAA

Lotto Numbers drawn were 4, 8, 24, 28 . There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €14,850. Seniors The seniors played Dromid on Sunday in the second round of the Junior Championship, having already lost to the same opposition in the county league, they needed no motivation for this game. Dromid held on to run out winners, 1-16 to 1-15. This was a cracking championship game with everyone giving their all, Fossa will be disappointed but the damage was done in the first half as Dromid were never going to surrender a nine point lead easily, however the Fossa players never gave up the chase and nearly got a draw in the finish which their second half efforts deserved. Minors

28.04.17 The minor team played Ballymac in the semi final of the county league on Friday evening in Ballymac and recorded a fantastic victory. It is never easy to win away from home and considering that they had lost to them in the league stage it was never going to be an easy game. On the night the Fossa players, to a man, stood up to be counted and produced a sterling display of football to win 4-09 to 1-14. This sets up a final with An Ghaeltacht in a couple of weeks time. Ladies Football The senior ladies recorded a good win over St Pat’s on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 6-11 to 4-07, well done ladies.

Killarney Legion

Club Championship Killarney Legion 2-14 Dingle 2-14 Anyone who paid at the gate coming in definitely wasn’t looking for a refund coming out as this epic finished level. Even the extra 20 minutes couldn’t separate the 2 teams as they slugged it out for 80 minutes. We looked especially dangerous in the

first quarter as James O Donoghue stole in for a goal and shortly after Conor Keane was most unlucky to see his audacious lob come back off the crossbar. At the other end Captain Danny Sheahan and All Star Paul Geaney had a ding dong battle as Paul slipped in for a goal and there was little between the sides at half time.1-7 to 1-5 in Dingles favour. There was a slight drought in scoring in the second half with Dingle again slipping in for a goal to open up a 5 point gap midway through. But Conor Keane,Thomas Moriarty and James O’Donoghue kept chipping away with Jack O Neill going through some lung busting work. Captain Danny Sheahan cavaliered upfield to win a penalty which was duly converted by James. The last 8 minutes were tense as Danny again stormed forward to nudge Legion in front in injury time before Mikey Geaney in a rare moment broke off the shackles of Denis Sheahan to equalize with the last kick of the game. The pace of the game didn’t drop in extra time as both teams gave their all. Dingle lead by 1 point with the last play of the game being a Legion free from 50 yards out. Up stepped substitute Finbarr Murphy with ice in his veins to kick a superb point and bring the curtain down on an absorbing draw. The team management will be delighted with the way the lads never relented and kept going to the bitter end with a draw being most deserving. Senior Ladies Killarney Legion 6-11 Laune Rangers 1-7 The Senior Ladies travelled to JP O Sullivan park in Killorglin and came home victorious with a fine win over Laune Rangers. GIRLS U16 Our U16 girls took to the field at Derreen for 2nd.round of the county league against Na Gaeil. Glenflesk GAA

GLENFLESK SENIORS (SPONSORED BY THE KERRYWAY & O`BRIENS QUICKPICK) Intermediate Championship. Our Senior team bowed out of the Intermediate Championship on Sunday last after a narrow loss to Laune Rangers. Despite being the better team for much of the first half, the concession of 2 early goals saw us go in at the break level. With the game in the melting pot Laune Rangers struck for what proved to be the decisive goal mid way through the second half & finished up with a 3 point win. A disappointing day for our young team but great credit must go to them for the never say die spirit they displayed.
