Editor’s View Shortage Of Parking Is Just Not Good Enough Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

IT’S JULY, summer is in full swing and so the parking crisis rears its head in Killarney yet again. No matter what time of day, or what day of the week, locals and visitors are faced with a lack of spaces. So what ends up happening? Motorists are driving around in circles, increasingly desperate, and all the while adding to the congestion of the town. At times, it seems like areas like the Muckross Road, Lewis Road and Mission Road are car parks in themselves, so immobile is the backed-up traffic, particularly on Fridays and throughout the weekend. Photographer Eamonn Keogh visited some of our town’s main car parks on Tuesday and Wednesday.

St Mary’s Cathedral car park was full to capacity on Tuesday evening when he called, as was The Glebe car park with the latter also already almost full by 9.30am on Wednesday. The New Street car park is often a no-go area, so packed is it at any time of the day or evening at this time of year. And what do we all say? It’s July, so what can we expect? That’s just not good enough. Killarney has been a tourism hotspot for generations and other countries seem to manage vast amounts of traffic so why can’t we? We know there will be an influx of cars every summer so why is there no forward thinking? Like the beleaguered cars, coaches and

Like the traffic, the search for a parking solution goes round and round in circles

trucks, the quest for a solution seems to go round and round in circles as the years pass. Many visitors now go online to plan and book their trip and such booking facilities can filter search options according

Council Examining Sites For Car Parking AT A meeting of Killarney Municipal District this summer, Councillor Brendan Cronin requested an update on the progress in providing extra parking in Killarney. Cllr Cronin also asked as to the possibility of expanding any of our existing public car parks. Kerry County Council stated it is actively examining the feasibility of a number of sites for car parking in Killarney. “Kerry County Council has examined all existing car parks to ensure that car parking capacity is maximised and is designing a proposal for increased parking at High Street,” it stated. Kerry County Council received

two expressions of interest for the provision of car parking in the Killarney town area. “Neither proposal provides a short-term solution to car parking provision in the town; however, a proposal for the provision of a medium to long-term solution is being investigated further by the operations department,” added the council. Killarney “must face that fact that it requires a multi-storey car park”, said Cllr Cronin. “In Cork and Limerick, people flock to these facilities and they are easily accessible,” he said. Cllr Cronin noted that land in Killarney was at a premium but this option must be investigated.

Council engineer Paul Neary said a project team had been set up to look at the feasibility of a multi-storey car park and investigate if the private sector can assist. Killarney Municipal District manager Angela McAllen said there was a difficulty acquiring land for housing and car parking in Killarney. “There are private individuals interested in developing multi-storey car parks with the council and to this end, a project team has been set up to look at developing a multi-storey car park in Killarney,” stated the council. “This could either be self-funded by a loan or with private developers.”

to feedback. There is therefore an added danger that Killarney could lose potential revenue in the future if negative feedback has an impact and the town’s placing plummets in search lists as a result of the inconvenient parking situation.

Traffic Delay Solution Sought A €50,000 study aimed to find solutions to the traffic delays in town this time last year. The report, by consultants Malachy Walsh and Partners,

found that what had been a three-minute journey along the Muckross Road, was taking three times longer than in recent years due to the lack of car parking spaces. The study also observed “extensive queues” on the northwestern side of town. But it noted any proposals for town centre multi-storey car parks would only add to congestion. Is this the best they can come up with?

Ciara Browne and Ciara Moynihan, from Workmen’s Rowing Club, Killarney, secured bronze for Ireland in the Junior Women’s Double at the Home Internationals in Strathclyde, Scotland.

Killarney Bids For Fifth Day Of July Racing KILLARNEY Race Company is working towards having a fifth day of racing added to its flagship July festival. Optimism is high that it will be approved following one of the most successful ever four-day July meetings last week. Huge crowds attended on all four days with course records confirming that the Dawn Milk Ladies Day, on Thursday, was the second best ever in terms of attendance. “We are now striving for a fifth day of racing in July and we are very hopeful

of achieving that, based on this year’s success,” said Race Company chairman Gerard Coughlan. “My main aim is to secure extra racing for the town, whether it’s by adding on days to the three festivals we have already or opting for a new stand-alone festival,” he added. Mr Coughlan noted that the races contribute enormously to Killarney’s economy with the three annual festivals, as they stand already, ensuring 80 races over a total of 11 days.

To cater for the expected increase in racing days, a new 54-unit stable barn, built at a cost of €350,000, was recently opened. “The conservative estimate is that the races are worth in the region of €6.2 million to Killarney with an additional €1.42 million in prize money,” he said. Meanwhile Mr Coughlan has expressed his gratitude to all those who provided assistance following the fall jockey Ana O’Brien suffered on the

Council Interested In Acquiring Land At St Finan’s Hospital

Some Suggestions...

SO WHAT could the former St Finan’s Hospital be used for? Below are a few of our own ideas and suggestions made by others locally: • Social housing • Tourism/catering college • Accommodation for seasonal tourism workers • Day-care centre similar to the Rockmount centre in Kilgarvan • Business hub If you have an idea why not get in touch with us on our Facebook page or email newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser.ie IT HAS dominated the landscape of Killarney since 1852 yet the imposing St Finan’s Hospital is now lying idle. News this week that Kerry County Council is in talks with the Health Service Executive about acquiring land at the former psychiatric hospital begs the question – what will be done with the imposing Victorian building itself? The potential of this centrally located and spacious facility must be harnessed for the good of the community and Killarney’s economy.

At the council’s recent monthly meeting, Councillor Michael Gleeson, Kerry Independent Alliance, asked the council to give an update on the Sir Thomas Deane-designed hospital and its lands. Cllr Gleeson said the hospital should be kept in public ownership, suggesting it could be used for apartments for single people or elderly couples, or as a daycare centre for people with Alzheimer’s. Part of the land could be used to solve the traffic crux at the Lewis Road/Killarney bypass unction while the site could

Don’t Let This Become Another Pretty Polly Why has nothing been done with factory site?

LET us hope the former St Finan’s Hospital is put to good use for Killarney sooner rather than later. No one wants to see another Pretty Polly situation whereby the former factory’s potential as a business hub was wasted for too long. A Killarney businessman told me this week he had been on a waiting list for 15 years to develop an industry at the factory site. “I was told something would be done with it within two years,” he said. “Thirteen years on and still nothing has been done with it.”

also benefit Killarney’s recreational life, Cllr Gleeson told the council. Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Michael Cahill has suggested that a tourism training college be located in the building. Killarney Advertiser columnist Anne Lucey noted that the former hospital building would be ideal for use as a catering college. “I have long argued we need a hotel-cum-catering college in Killarney, a bit like a Swiss college of catering,” she wrote.

Kerry County Council has met with the HSE a number of times in relation to the availability of surplus HSE lands. The council received correspondence from the HSE about St Finan’s at the end of June, and the local authority has formally indicated a strategic interest in land at the campus. “There are very few who would wish to see the building transferred to private ownership,” said Cllr Gleeson, adding: “I do not want to see St Finan’s end up in private hands.”

News Briefs ...

Delays Branded ‘Beyond Shocking’ PATIENTS will face yet more delays accessing new medical testing facilities at University Hospital Kerry, says Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil. Deputy Brassil was commenting after receiving a response from the Health Service Executive to his parliamentary question to the Minister for Health, Simon Harris. University Hospital Kerry has previously sought capital funding from the HSE National Capital Steering Committee to build new premises for the Pathology Department.

“As of July 2017, this funding has been approved, and there was no commitment given to me in the PQ reply that a decision is expected anytime soon,” said Deputy Brassil. He added: “Until capital funding is approved for Kerry University Hospital to allow them to build the new department, Kerry patients will not have access to proper and full pathology services. It is beyond shocking that the tender process for the new equipment was not facilitated at the same time as the application for capital funding for a new pathology department.”

Parking Fees Of €830,000 Collected THE Killarney Municipal District collected €830,000 from public parking last year. Kerry County Council said this was the net income after expenditure for 2016

and it was an increase of €184,000 on the previous year. Councillor John Joe Culloty had asked the council for figures relating to public parking at the recent municipal district meeting.

‘The Dream Is Over’

JUNIOR World Rally Championship contender Rob Duggan has spoken of his disappointment after missing out on Rally Poland and this weekend’s Rally Finland, due to a sponsorship issue. The Junior WRC is contested over six WRC rounds – starting in Corsica, then Italy, Poland, Finland and Germany before finishing in Spain. But after missing the Poland and Finland stages, the Killarney rally ace said it wouldn’t make sense to continue the campaign. “We have pulled the pin on the Junior World Rally Championship for this year,” Rob told Killarney Advertiser. “After missing the Poland

round it doesn’t make any sense to go ahead with Finland. It’s a shame but there is nothing we can do. For now the dream is over, for this year.” The former Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year followed the season opening round in Corsica with the Rally Italia Sardinia in June in which he claimed sixth place. But Rob and his co-driver Ger Conway missed out on taking part in the Rally Poland stage (June 30-July 2), and now the Rally Finland (which runs from today until Sunday) because of what Rob describes as “a hold-up” in prize money funding. “We were ready to

go, but unfortunately it just wasn’t happening,” he said. When Duggan and Conway clinched the DMACK Junior title in the British Rally Championship last year, the prize was to provide funding for Duggan to take a huge step forward in his rally career by tackling five rounds of this year’s World Rally Championship. “There seems to be a hesitancy with the prize and we have not received anything,” said the 24-year-old. The prize money was to come in three payments, with the drivers half-funding the drives, added Rob. “We have two rallies completed and have not seen anything. It is a shame,” he said.

Flooding

Flooding Relief Promised For Glenflesk

THE Minister of State at the Office of Public Works has pledged an increase in flood relief funding for Kerry. During a two-day visit to the county, Kevin “Boxer” Moran met with the community of Glenflesk as he embarked on a mission to see at first-hand local areas prone to flooding and coastal erosion. The Junior Minister also met with Kerry County Council management and engineers to discuss how to tackle the issue and seek funding. Kerry TDs Danny and Michael Healy-Rae and Killarney Municipal District Mayor Niall Kelleher asked Minister Moran and the executive of Kerry County Council to apply for funding for minor flood works schemes for Foiladuane, Glenflesk and Castleisland. Minister Moran said: “The Minor Works Scheme provides funding to local authorities to undertake minor flood mitigation works or studies to address localised river flooding and coastal protection problems within their administrative areas. The scheme generally applies where a solution can be readily identified and achieved in a short time frame.” He added: “We all know that sometimes, small works can reap important benefits for local communities and I look forward to the continued engagement of Kerry County Council with my office on this valuable scheme.”

St John Of God Residents Incorrectly Charged For Furniture & Aids RESIDENTS at the St John of God facility In Beaufort will be reimbursed money they spent on equipment that should have been paid for by the service providers. A report by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) found that residents of he facility had been incorrectly charged for furniture and aids. The report carried out by the health watchdog was based on unannounced inspections on January 10, 12 and 13. The centre, run by St John of God Community Services, comprises four houses, with 31 fulltime residential adults with intellectual disabilities. This report found that between 2013 and 2016 a number of residents had to pay for specialised chairs, while another was charged in excess of €2,000 for an aid they used daily. Residents were regularly referred to private dieti-

cians, without checking their entitlement under the public health system. It was also a regular practice for residents to pay between €200 and €300 for the fireproofing of curtains. The HIQA report states these irregularities had already come to the provider’s attention prior to the inspection, and an internal audit was being carried out. Inspectors were informed residents would be refunded. The report overall looked at 10 areas of care, and found six were majorly non-compliant with regulations, two were moderately non-compliant, and two were substantially compliant. “Overall, inspectors formed the view that the majority of residents were happy and comfortable in the company of staff,” according to the report. “Staff members interacted with residents in a kind and caring manner and residents appeared to be

comfortable in their presence.” Inspectors identified a number of areas of good practice, particularly in staff/resident interaction and personal plans. However, they were not satisfied there were adequate numbers of staff on duty at all times to meet residents’ needs. In December 2016, St John of God Kerry Services commenced an internal audit around the management of residents’ money and property, stated St John of God Kerry. “This audit identified expenses which were charged to residents and which were deemed eligible for refund. HIQA was informed of this audit during their unannounced inspection in January 2017,” it added. “The residents and their family member(s) were advised on a breakdown of what was eligible for refund and this refund was given in April 2017.”

Now in its eighth year the event attracted competitors from all over Ireland and as well as a host of international athletes, jetting in from 15 countries, including America, Singapore, Qatar, Finland, France and the UK. The event sold out weeks in advance. Event organiser Oliver Kirwan said: “We are really pleased the event went so well, we have 600 more participants than last year and it’s great for the town in promoting a healthy lifestyle and showcasing the best that the Killarney has to offer. Events of this size are not possible without huge support of the Killarney National Park and all those who facilitate the running of this event. Many thanks to all involved.” The Gleneagle Run Killarney 10km and half marathon 2018 will take place on July 28 next year. Registration is now open with a 30% discount on standard entry for the first 50 people to register for either the 10km or half marathon.

Classic Cars

Revving Up For Action THERE was an impressive display of horsepower at the Killarney Racecourse last Sunday as classic and vintage cars enjoyed the limelight. Over 100 gleaming motors were showcased at the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club event where organisers placed a particular emphasis on Ford cars to celebrate 100 years of Ford. Family fun was the order of the day, with a kids’ zone, face painting and bouncy castles on offer, while no one went home hungry, thanks to a barbecue and food stalls. Tom Leslie of Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club thanked main sponsor Ahern’s Garage, which displayed Opel and BMW cars, for its continued support, as well as Killarney Racecourse. And there’s no chance for the club members to rest on their laurels as they are now gearing up to host the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show, which takes place on Sunday, September 3. The launch of the championships will be held in the Innisfallen Hotel, Fossa, tomorrow, at 6.30pm and all are welcome to attend.

All The Fun Of The Fair “PULL like a dog” was a byword in Killarney on Wednesday evening. Ruairi, Brian and Orna O’Leary dazzled in their homage to the Olympic medallists the O’Donovan brothers at the Birds EuroShow Carnival Week fancy dress show. their moment in the spotlight on Monday as the dog show appealed to pooches of all descriptions who strutted their stuff with their owners in tow. Picture This The Fastest-Ever Act To Sell Out The INEC PICTURE THIS have become the fastest-ever act to sell out the INEC Killarney and the first act to sell the venue out for two consecutive dates. Tickets for the November 10 date were snapped up within a record three minutes as soon as they went on sale on Friday morning at 9am and due to the phenomenal demand a second ate was added for November 11 – which was sold out shortly after. Picture This grabbed the attention of Ireland when an iPhone video of their track “Take My Hand” went viral. A subsequent gig in Grand Social was upgraded to The Academy as demand was so fierce and Picture This became a force to be reckoned

with. Fast forward two years and the band have a #1 Gold selling EP – which is still in the charts after 40 weeks, 30,000 tickets sold in Ireland alone and a second headline slot behind Stormzy at Longitude Festival this July. Hailing from Athy, Co Kildare, Jimmy Rainsford and Ryan Hennessy joined forces at the end of October 2015. Upon hearing Ryan’s unique voice after spotting him performing in local pubs and venues, Jimmy invited Ryan to join him in his studio to record some tracks. After quickly hitting it off the duo decided to make the partnership more permanent and Picture This was born. They are looking forward to playing the INEC, which has a new increased total capacity of 8200. Picture This: Jimmy Rainsford and Ryan Hennessy

Dawn Of A New Era Forty-eight years ago this July, Apollo 11 blasted off on its threeday journey to the moon, says Trevor O’Donoghue

Win The Trip Of A Lifetime The lunar rover and lunar lander from 1972.

ON JULY 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to step foot on the moon. Mankind looked on in awe. It was the dawn of a new era, heralding in what was to be a fantastic voyage of discovery that started with the moon, moved to Mars and beyond and eventually further into our solar system and perhaps even journeying to neighbouring star systems. Fast-forward to 1972 and the Apollo 17 mission which saw astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernon walk on the moon. They were the 11th and 12th men to explore the surface of the moon. This December will mark 45 years since they left the lunar surface. Unfortunately man hasn’t been back to the moon, nor have we landed humans on any other celestial body since.

In spite of the huge advances in technology and the massive engineering steps we have taken, the furthest humans have been from earth since the days of the Apollo missions has been low Earth orbit and regular stops at the International Space Station, with a few Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions thrown in for good measure. A mere celestial hop at 540km from Earth. China is making some noises about manned lunar missions and NASA seem to have been given a shake by Donald Trump and it will be interesting to see if their plans pan out. The next couple of years will reveal a lot. It would be great to have the excitement of manned missions to the moon especially for those of us who weren’t around to witness the first ones.

Netflix - The Prestige

Reviewed: The Party by Elizabeth Day The Bookworm THIS dark tale of obsession makes for an utterly riveting read. Elizabeth Day’s first novel, Scissors, Paper, Stone, won a Betty Trask award. This is her fourth and it has so far been compared to Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr Ripley. While at boarding school Martin Gilmour develops an attachment to classmate Ben Fitzmaurice, the popular and charming son of an aristocratic family. A friendship develops as Martin gradually inveigles

his way into the Fitzmaurice home as a proxy for Ben’s dead brother. The relationship is formalised when Martin takes the rap for Ben following a serious accident while they are at Cambridge University. Martin marries Lucy and husband and wife tell the story in alternating first-person narratives. The novel is framed by Martin’s interview in a police station following some unknown-but-terrible event at Ben’s lavish 40th birthday celebration, the eponymous party.

ONE of the best movies on Netflix this month, The Prestige comes from director Christopher Nolan who is co-writer of the film along with Jonathan Nolan. Set in London at the end of the 19th century, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are duelling magicians with very different approaches to their craft. When Bale’s

character unveils a seemingly impossible trick, Jackman’s character is driven mad trying to figure out how it works. It’s a story of obsession, devotion, and priorities, and the film’s non-linear structure makes for a wildly compelling watch. It also stars Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Gender Pay Gap Row Rumbles On RECENT days have seen the gender pay gap row in the UK spill over into the Irish media, with our national broadcaster, RTÉ, coming under particular scrutiny. There was outrage this weekend as the two Six One news presenters Sharon Ni Bheolain and Bryan Dobson were singled out. It has been suggested that because both co-present the flagship news programme, they should automatically be paid the same salary. Sharon Ni Bheolain herself said it would be “cowardly” not to respond given the importance of gender equality in society. She was quoted as saying: “I believe I’m well remunerated. But for the record, my pay is considerably less than Bryan’s.”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has welcomed RTÉ’s decision to carry out

a gender equality review following controversy over pay gaps and said

the Government will insist large numbers of employers conduct salary surveys. He told station bosses that he believes “strongly” in the principle of equal pay for equal work. In his first comments on the controversy, Mr Varadkar insisted that the Government will force all companies to address the issue of gender imbalance in the workplace. The Irish Independent revealed details which showed 207 managers received “performance increment increases” while at the same time RTÉ was amassing a deficit of €19.7m. The most up-to-date information available from RTÉ shows the average salary in 2015 was €57,564, but the vast majority of managers could expect to be on more than this.

A visitor from California recently spent a night at Hotel Doolin in Clare with her husband and their son and gave the hotel one star out of five, citing “lying staff”, the “worst Wi-Fi”, and the “filthy floors”. “Emma at the desk lied to me,” she wrote. “At first she told me that her only availability was a double bed but we had three people (myself, husband and son). So I asked if she could recommend another place in town and she told me that there was only BB in town and no other hotels.” But according to Donal, the general manager who replied, she’s wrong. “From the title of your review, other readers would think that you inadvertently stumbled into Hitchcock’s Jamaica Inn and that Hotel Doolin was full of brigands and cutthroats, that our staff wear eye patches and pantaloons and are hiding behind the pillars in the lobby, cutlass clenched between our teeth, waiting to jump out and pillage passers-by. “You say the hotel is deceitful and dishonest and that one of our staff members, Emma, is a liar when, in fact, it is your good self that is being liberal with the truth. “Emma did make a mistake on check-in with the rate, this was spotted the following morning by one of our more senior receptionists and

was rectified before you checked out.” He added: “I’m sensing a lot of anger in the review above and I know that you probably didn’t mean to let loose all that anger on us. Hey, sometimes people just need to vent. Sometimes at night when I come home from a long day’s work at the hotel, I check to see if everyone is in bed and then I go out into the field at the back of my house and scream into the darkness. I let it all out, like a wolf on a moonlit mountain. I feel better after that and nobody gets hurt.” He added: “There are three men over the age of forty working in the hotel. Only one of them was working on the night you stayed, so we didn’t know how to deal with the ‘grumpy old men’ in your review, until my assistant manager came up with the only viable solution. We’ve

decided to execute all three of these men to ensure that no other guests will have to endure the horrific ordeal you went through that evening in the bar. Paul, Martin and Luis will be blindfolded and shot in the back of the head at Fitz’s cross after mass this Sunday. There will be trad music, cocktail sausages and face-painting for the kids and I can organise a pair of complimentary tickets for you if you wish to attend.” He added: “ In fact, each year on the 30th February we have a party for our valued past customers who think we are liars, we all hold hands and dance around a campfire and sing songs that help us forget about the past and look with hope towards the future. “We’d love if you could make it (that lying cheating ruffian Emma won’t be there, we promise).”

High & Dry In Louth IRISH WATER has said that repairs of a burst water main supplying the northeast of the country have been completed. The utility said that the water treatment plant at Staleen, Co Meath, is now back in production. More than 50,000 homes and businesses in counties Meath and Louth were without water for almost a

week after the pipe burst last Friday. Irish Water earlier said water supplies are beginning to return to the rest of the northeast, but said that it could take several days for supply to be fully restored. It asked householders and businesses to continue to conserve their mains water supply for the next few days until supply has returned to normal. Irish Water said: “Rostered mains

supply rationing will continue today. As the day progresses we expect to be in a position to supply more areas with a mains supply and gradually remove temporary supply locations.” It added that disturbance in the pipe may result in some people receiving discoloured water or water with sediment, but said it is monitoring water quality and the water is safe to drink.

Justin Timberlake In ‘Fake News’ About Killarney FACEBOOK was awash with “shares” this week as Killarney folk delighted in “praise” from Justin Timberlake about our town. The website wtsg24.com reported that the pop star took a few moments to praise Killarney in a radio interview, saying residents had helped him after his rental car encountered a mechanical issue. Justin is reported to have said: “We were just leaving Killarney, Ireland, when our car began to overheat so I pulled over to the side of the road and noticed there were a couple of cars pulling up behind me. They got out and asked if I needed any help and I told them that I was just about to call someone.

Then one of them says that he has a brother who owns a tow truck and a few minutes later it showed up and they towed it in to get fixed.” The report proceeds to highlight Justin’s tale of how his new friends took him to lunch while the car was being repaired. “And these guys had no idea who I was which, honestly, just made my day. I’m telling you, these people in Killarney are the real deal. If I ever retire, I’m moving there!” A ringing endorsement but a closer look at the website shows the disclaimer: “Most of the articles on wtsg24.com are works of fantasy or satire and are not true. This website is meant for entertainment purposes only.”

In The News. . . Scaramucci: ‘Reince Is A F*** Paranoid Schizophrenic, A Paranoiac’ TENSIONS within the White House were uncovered yesterday following the publication of a rant by newly appointed communications director Anthony Scaramucci directed at White House chief of staff Rence Priebus, reports the Irish Times. Ryan Lizza, a reporter with the New Yorker, released details of a conversation he had with Mr Scaramucci on Wednesday, after the communications director phoned him.

“Reince is a f*** paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac,” Mr Scaramucci said, according to Mr Lizza’s account of the conversation. The former hedge fund manager also spoke in crude terms about Steve Bannon, Mr Trump’s senior adviser. Mr Scaramucci responded on Twitter. “I sometimes use colorful language,” he said. “I will refrain in this arena but not give up the passionate fight for @RealDonaldTrump’s agenda.”

Murder ‘Witnessed’ By Family Parrot Dalí’s Moustache Found Intact A MICHIGAN woman accused of gunning down her husband appeared in court Friday, but the only witness to the alleged crime remained behind bars. A birdcage, to be precise. The case of Glenna Duram made national news last year when it was revealed that her parrot Bud was the sole witness of the fatal shooting of her 45-year-old husband Martin on May 12, 2015. And remains to be seen if he will sing like a canary during the trial. “Don’t f---ing shoot,” Bud could be heard on a video that family members recorded several weeks after the kill-

ing — and in which they insisted he was mimicking the couple as they were arguing. “That bird picks up anything and everything,” the victim’s mother, Lillian Duram, said. Duram, who survived what prosecutors believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, is charged with first-degree murder. Witnesses took the stand as Duram heard evidence against her at the preliminary hearing on Friday.

Nearly Half A Million Adults Still Live With Parents MORE than 450,000 adults are living with their parents, representing an increase of nearly 5% on 2011, new data from the 2016 Census shows. Some 400,000 people were living alone, while 41.1% of the Irish population aged 15 and

over, accounting for 1,544,862 people, were single, according to figures released yesterday. The Households and Families section of the Census shows there were 458,874 adults aged 18 and over living with a parent at the time the Census was taken in April 2016.

WHEN Salvador Dalí’s body was exhumed from his tomb in Figueres, Spain, last Thursday, officials noted that his iconic moustache remained remarkably unscathed. Lluís Peñuelas, the secretary general of the Gala-Dalí Foundation, says the artist’s moustache retained “its classic 10-past-10 position”, like the hands of a clock stretched out, The New York Times reports. Dalí’s embalmer called it “a miracle.” But to forensic scientists who deal with corpses on a regular basis, the tenacity of dead people’s hair is anything but miraculous. “For human remains that are placed in airtight conditions such as coffins or crypts, it is entirely possible for hair to preserve over

very long periods of time,” says anthropologist Tiffany Saul in an email to The Scientist. Saul recently earned her doctorate from the University of Tennessee studying isotope values in human hair following decomposition. Even after exposure to outdoor elements, “it is not uncommon to recover hair . . . [after] many years post-mortem,” she adds. Officials disrupted the surrealist painter’s crypt beneath the Dalí Museum Theatre to retrieve samples of nails, hair, and bone, reports the Associated Press. The tissues will be analysed to satisfy paternity claims brought by a woman who alleges that Dalí had an affair with her mother. He was buried in the museum following his death in 1989 at age 84.

Killarney Cycling Club Powers Its Way To Glory

AS THE Tour de France concluded its run, Killarney Cycling Club was setting records of its own at the weekend at the Kerry Cycling Championships. The annual championships, in Killorglin, drew from clubs across the county with the most coveted title being the senior county champion. This was achieved by a deserving Killarney team who played an experienced role in delivering Conor Kissane to the line and won the race from one of Ireland’s top amateur riders Sean Lacey. The team prize was also won by Killarney which also took the honours in the under-12 and under-14 categories, second prize in the under-16 section and also the junior title. The many placings at all levels comprehensively

stamped Killarney Cycling Club as the dominant force here in the Kingdom. While this was going on at home, Killarney’s mountain bikers were distinguishing themselves on the national stage, with Luke Murphy taking gold in the under-12s and his brother Jack taking third in the junior category. Jack will now go to the European championships, representing Ireland on an international stage. Richard Maes exchanged his road bike for a mountain bike to take a national title in the M30 category. Again the strength of the club members’ mountain biking prowess ensured that all categories Killarney riders were at the business end powering their way to ensure dominance on the national scene.

Killarney Gardaí Tackle Underage Drinking PLAINCLOTHES officers will be onsite at Killarney Racecourse in August in a crackdown on underage drinking. Ladies day race meetings in Ireland have seen a spike in the numbers of teenage attendees in recent years and Killarney is no exception. Killarney Gardaí worked in conjunction with Killarney Race committee at last Thursday’s ladies day to make what Sergeant Dermot O’Connell described as “a concerted effort” to tackle the issue. Sergeant O’Connell said uniformed officers were present at the racecourse last Thursday monitoring ID cards. “As a result of that a number of youths were taken to the garda station,” he said. “Gardaí contacted their parents and they will be processed through the juvenile liaison scheme.” Of these, some had false IDs and others had been supplied with drinks by persons over 18. “Going forward, An Garda Siochána and Killarney Race committee will be working together in August, with plainclothes officers monitoring activities,” said Sergeant O’Connell. “We want a positive, safe environment so people can enjoy the day. It is all about safety and that attendees will get home safely and come to no harm.”

Frank Lewis Follows Fr Pat’s Footsteps KILLARNEY broadcaster Frank Lewis follows in the footsteps of Father Pat Moore in Fr Moore’s native Asdee for a special radio programme tomorrow. The Saturday Supplement programme will be broadcast from 9am to 11am and available on podcast (www.radiokerry.ie) from the following Tuesday or Wednesday. The programme begins in a farmyard where the Irish Dáil of the modern era had its first meeting. Asdee’s sporting heroes are remembered, as is the grandfather of the famous outlaw Jesse James who emigrated from Asdee.

Politicians To Do Battle In Glenflesk POLITICIANS will be togging out in Glenflesk in coming weeks to go head-to-head in a three-legged race and a wheelbarrow challenge. MEP Sean Kelly, along with TDs and senators will be taking part in the events on Sunday, August 13, as part of GlenFest – a day-long celebration to mark 40 years of Glenflesk GAA Club’s pitch. “It’s going to be far from fun and games for the county’s top politicians when they are drawn with partners to race over 100 yards in a three-legged race and in a wheelbarrow challenge in the last great sporting event to be held on Glenflesk’s 40-year-old GAA pitch,” said Derry Healy, club chairman. GlenFest is being organised to mark the end of the current pitch in Glenflesk which is about to be dug up and redeveloped for future generations. “The pitch represents much

more than the GAA club’s focal point – it also stores a wealth of treasured memories and local history,” said Derry. Throw-in for the free day of entertainment is at 2pm when open-air Mass will be celebrated on the field with many former priests of the parish and former club chairpersons in attendance. “It’s a way of saying ‘thank you’ to so many people who have got us to where we are today. I’m sure there will be mixed feelings as we say goodbye to one chapter and look forward to the next with great enthusiasm,” Derry added. Entertainment will include movies in the local hall, with a film for teenagers being chosen by an online vote. The premiere of the official DVD of the hit drama ‘Patrick’ – filmed live at Deputy Michael Healy-Rae, James Furlong, Derry Healy, Deputy John Brassil, Michelle the INEC and featuring numerous local Morris, Deputy Danny Healy-Rae, Marie O’Connor, Peggy Horan, MEP Sean Kelly and performers – will be at 8pm. Christmas Jumpers All The Rage In Killarney This July Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Eamonn Keogh IT’S NEVER too soon to enjoy a bit of festive fun, I say, and revellers in Killarney surpassed themselves by getting the party started exactly five months ahead of Christmas Eve. Despite the soaring temperatures, Christmas jumpers and Santa hats were de rigueur on Main Street as the Killarney Grand hosted its annual Christmas in July party. As for its theme? Naughty or Nice, of course, which went down a treat with partygoers. Jack Patrick Healy, the talented resident pianist of the venue’s popular Liquid Lounge, accessorised with a red sequinned jacket while revellers and staff also cut a festive dash.

Welcome

T

hank you to Noelle and the Advertiser team for giving me the opportunity to fill in for this month. This is an exciting new challenge to express my thoughts on interior design. The month of July is fulfilled with movement, constant coming and going, with summer barbecues, races and holidays so naturally this month’s Home & Living theme is the hallway. Our hallways get a lot of use because it is through them we enter and leave our homes. Hallways are the main areas for “meet and greet” and this is why they are so important. First impressions tend to last, however right or wrong they may be. It is a good idea to treat your hallway as a gallery, so a bit of visual drama goes a long way. It helps to stimulate the mind and leaves the person with a remarkable memory of one’s home. There are many tricks you can use in achieving this. The boot rooms and entranceways are also a big part of the hallway and have their own little story to tell. You will find a few ideas here on how to bring them to life. There is a small section on utilities also. This is because a good part of the population actually uses their utility as the main entrance. And the beloved downstairs toilet, what a wonderful space to add character! Designing an interior is a journey; it evolves gradually and should always go with the characteristics of the people living there. This gives the feelgood factor, after all.

VARY the rhythm of different textures such as wool, sisal and cord. Combine different materials in order to give more character to the scheme. A sisal rug could be trimmed with a linen border. My current interior crush is flooring by “Creatuft”. It is a fabulous collection and is available at Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre. Think about a variety of combinations such as metal and silk, bright coloured glass combined with mirrors or wool with wood. Corcoran’s in Killarney has a selection of elegant lamps. You may vary the colours within the same colour families for a subtle look. The more eccentric option would be to have an uneven number from different colour families such as plum, mustard and teal. A mustard wall with a plum colour rug and teal chair would form an edgy hallway. The classic palette would be rose gold, mahogany and black. Picture a dark wood console table with rose gold and black picture frames. Earthy neutrals work best with wooden floorings and tiles. A polished concrete floor tends to look better with more vibrant coloured rugs. Play with multiple materials, layer them and mix them up. This gives more depth to the interior and makes it feel more luxurious.

The Family Home with the Feelgood Factor

T

HIS is a child-friendly family home with a soft earthy palette running through the building. There is a grey undertone in all the paint colours and that’s why there is a nice “flow” from room to room, pulling the house’s look together. Every area is divided up by feeling. An off-white woodwork runs throughout and brings a sense of unity by connecting all the rooms. The kitchen is decorated with calming yellow-green and stone-grey units by Maurice Prendiville Kitchens in Killarney. The countertop is kept pale and this lifts the greige floor tile. The blue grey in the hallway makes the hall airy. A funky rug from Killarney Carpet and Furniture Centre warms up the tiles. There is a special corner for kids where they can draw on the walls. The blackboard paint is a wonderful solution to most parents’ nightmare. The children's bedrooms are as bright and colourful as their personalities. The wall mural brings character and makes the room playful and child-friendly. The turquoise girl’s bedroom feels cheerful, gives a light-hearted look and goes with the mountain of toys. The off-white blinds, by Medor Blinds, Killarney, help to open up the windows. This brings an element of freshness to the overall scheme. The sitting room appears inviting with its comfortable couch and rich warm grey-green wall colour. The smoky navy master bedroom has a sophisticated ambience. Another trick is that the flooring has the same colouring throughout – this helps to make the building spacious. The colourful family home has a timeless quality and a feelgood factor.

Downstairs Bathroom:

The New Talking Point

OWNSTAIRS bathrooms can often be an afterthought. Take a look to abroad for some inspiration. I remember being on holiday in Italy and discovering the Italians treat their bathrooms as an extra room. I thought it is a clever idea to make the otherwise lonely downstairs bathroom a talking point instead. Place a chair, few books or other unusual elements in this room, or explore your options with colour. A smoky green such as ‘’Livid No 263’’ by Little Greene would look unusual. If you would like to go a step bolder, theme it with textured wallpaper. Little Greene paint is available in Corcoran’s, Killarney.

Trend: Glamour TALKING about interior trends for 2017 we cannot pass the metallic wallpapers. Shiny surfaces, metallic paint and glittery wallpaper are all the rage. Colours to watch out for are burnt orange, smoky blues and muddy greens. Rose gold and copper are the new hot metals to look out for. You have to see it to believe it. Metallic surfaces tend to bounce light in the room and therefore give a brighter ambience. Pop into any of the local stores that do wallpaper such as Hal-Lou and Mylestone Interiors in Killarney. I like the quote by Illamasqua Makeup, “Dream big, sparkle more, shine bright!” It relates to current interior trend of all things glamorous. An eclectic mix of glitzy items would give an instant update. Think of glitzy, shiny and glossy surfaces. Slick and sparkling is the way to go!

Fresh Look At Boot Rooms

B

OOT ROOMS are popular among busy families. This is the room where the armour to go with various weather conditions is being kept. Choose a colour that will lift spirits and give the room a light and airy feel. Blush pink is on trend this year. Have a look at ‘’Mid Jasper’’ by Dulux Signature Range. It works well with grey, black and navy giving the boot room a more sophisticated feel. An old bench or trunk would be functional for sitting down and changing shoes. Lot’s Furniture in Tralee has some pieces that would be worth considering.

The Glamorous

Gallery

T

HERE can often be a problem with lack of natural light in the hallways. Even if you have got a large cathedral window, there are still some parts that are dark and gloomy. It is best to work with light not against it. This is something we do naturally when it comes to dressing ourselves. We pick the clothes to suit the body and skin tone first. The same type of thinking that can be applied to decorating the hallway. Table lamps and wall lights are a great way to create a welcoming feeling in the hallway. The lamps can be left on once the evening time comes. We are programmed to turn the lights off from an early age. Believe it or not, it is international. The table lamps help to create a pleasant ambience. The clever way is to have lights on sensors. This would give the best of both worlds. Energy is being saved and darkness does not hit you while passing through hallway. If the sensors are not an option use low-energy bulbs. There is a common tendency to paint the hallway with a pale colour. This can appear dull and draining, because there is no light. Go for a richer wall colour instead such as “0561 Indian Hills”. Most importantly the hallway lighting is crucial. The Tradekit in Killarney has a lovely selection that can be ordered in, it would be a good idea to talk to lighting consultants. Wall washers are good too for a pleasant ambience. Mix various light sources by placing some table lamps on a side table. Corcoran’s Furniture in Killarney has a good selection. Another trick is to treat your hallway as a gallery where you can hang paintings, pictures and photographs. It is best to stagger the frames, look up Pinterest or Instagram for some ideas. It is kind of like cooking, let it happen. It’s not always a good practice to follow the recipe exactly, relax into it. The end result will be more creative.

Utilities: Stuff of Life Possibilities 1081 Endless IT TOOK me a while to get my head around it: Why is it that no one seems to ring the doorbell? Instead people arrive at the back door of the house or the side entrance. The explanation goes like this: ‘‘It is only the people we do not know that come in by the front doors.” Eureka! The utility has an important role to play in Irish homes. This is where all that we need to make our lives more comfortable is kept. Pick a bold wall colour to go with that lively feeling in the utility. ‘’1081 Endless Possibilities’’ by Colourtrend is a red-orange. This vibrant hue is associated with love, energy and wisdom according to colour psychology. Little quotes on the walls can shift the mood too. Quirky hooks, storage boxes and colourful baskets will make life much easier. I have recently come across quite unusual pieces in Lot’s Furniture, Tralee.

THE Eurowave is an electronic device that utilizes Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) technology, specifically a 400Hz and 600Hz pulsating faradic wave, to penetrate deep core muscle, and achieve toning, shaping and tightening. It can work on tummy shaping, bum lift or thighs. This is an ideal treatment for anyone wanting an overall reduction of a specific stubborn area. The results of the treatment can be even greater if in conjunction with a weight reduction or detoxing. How Eurowave works A professional Eurowave machine performs inch loss. It can lift and contour the body by actually building new muscle mass. The Eurowave “works out” the muscle group in much the same way as an isometric exercise. The 18-minute session is completely effortless, and is equivalent to 200 sit-ups. The Diathermy option that helps reduce the appearance of cellulite at the same time as your inch loss session! Eurowave Electro Muscle Stimulation is a very safe and simple procedure in which micro-currents are applied to the muscle fibres of a treated area, stimulating them and making them work. The stimulation creates huge energy demand in the muscles. To satisfy this demand, muscles utilise surrounding fats as the source of energy, burning them the same as they do during a regular workout. Besides firming muscles, EMS also increases the metabolism, fluid circulation and oxygenation of a treated area, making it an effective tool to improve the appearance of cellulite. Eurowave is recommended for both men and women. • For more information, don’t hesitate to call us at 064-66329666.

ALL roads will lead to Manor West Shopping Centre and Retail Park tomorrow, Saturday, July 29, as it hosts the Summer Food and Craft Fair. The event, which takes place from 12 noon to 5pm, is the first in a series of markets which will take place this year. The Manor West fairs are always a major draw and celebrate the wealth of artisan producers who have thriving businesses in the Kingdom. An interesting and eclectic mix of local businesses will be showcasing their goods on the day, with produce such as artisan cheeses, Spanish cuisine, spices and seasonings, homemade cakes, jams and health snacks. The fair promises to be a funfilled day out for

all the family with balloon modellers, face painters and popular characters from the Kingdom Party Pals as well as Tony the Magician. Radio Kerry will also be there during the day chatting with some of the producers and craftspeople, taking requests from visitors to the centre and there will be an opportunity to win some special spot prizes! Derek Rusk, centre manager, said: “Supporting local is something everyone here at Manor West is very passionate about and we are delighted to be able to hold a summer event that allows local artisan producers to showcase their products lovingly made in Kerry as well as offer a new experience to visitors – both local and the many holiday makers stopping off at Manor West.”

Munster Parents Forced To Deny Children Back-To-School Items ONE in four parents will have to deny their children basic school items this year as they continue to struggle to fund the back to school spend. The average return to school spend continues to increase and has now reached €1,209 per child – up from €1,185 last year (2% rise). More than a quarter say the costs will negatively impact household bills. Almost three quarters of parents continue to see the back to school spend as a financial burden, despite a 9% drop in the numbers getting into debt. A substantial two thirds say they will buy foreign goods over Irish produced goods if it means cutting costs. Tesco has overtaken Dunnes Stores as the preferred shop for back to school supplies and uniforms. The annual Irish League of Credit Unions survey shows

Letters

clearly that parents continue to struggle with the back to school spend with almost a quarter of parents in Munster (23%) saying they will be forced to deny their children certain school items. Nationally, 20% of primary school parents and 31% of secondary school parents said they would have to deny their children school items as the school spend continues to prove challenging. Of those who say they will have to refuse their children school basics, 38% say they can’t buy their children new school shoes. 67% say they can’t afford extracurricular activities. 36% say school trips and a further 36% say new gym gear will be items cut from the back to school list as they struggle to cope with costs. The national survey also revealed that the majority of parents getting into debt over back to school costs were in the Munster

region, where more than a third (34%) say they will owe money due to the associated costs. Worryingly, 10% of parents in Munster say they are considering a moneylender to help cope with the school spend, just slightly behind Dublin (11%). Although more parents than ever are now in a position to finance back to school costs through their monthly income (71% compared with 64% last year and 41% the previous two years), the survey results clearly show that funding the back to school spend continues to be a challenge. A substantial 72% of parents feel the back to school spend is a financial burden, with more than a quarter (27%) saying the costs will impact negatively on household bills. 28.07.17 Fundraiser

As an artist there is a fine line between appealing to the public and staying true to yourself, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

Who Is My Audience? DO WE stay within the confines of our own vision or do we relax the boundaries a little to let a new brand of audience come in? When I was studying music in college there was a definite dislike among my peers for the “crossover” type classical singers of the world. The likes of Katherine Jenkins and Josh Groban were seen to have turned their backs on their true background and to have lowered their standards in order to appeal to a wider audience. I always felt torn when these debates took place as I was knee-deep in my classical studies yet my heart was siding more with the crossover singers. At the ripe old age of 31 I have now realised why I felt so torn back then. While my peers felt that these famous singers had turned their back on their roots I think these singers probably always had a

passion and love for the more contemporary style of music. I came to this conclusion because that is exactly how I feel. As a child my favourite singer was Celine Dion. As a teenager I listened to the Frames and Damien Rice on loop. When I began vocal training I simply fell into the classical world and went from there. Now that I no longer have anyone telling me what to sing and how to sing, I feel I can use my training to compliment the type of music I love to perform. I ask everyone to try not to judge people for the way they express themselves. We can only appeal to a certain number of people and my hope is that, if we stay true to our hearts, people will inevitably be more drawn to our creations. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Celsius. Put cream in a pot with vanilla and bring to a gentle boil. Meanwhile mix the egg yolks and sugar together, add the cream then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in a ramekin, put in a tray and place water around ramekins until it comes up on three-quarters of the ramekins. Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set – a gentle shake should determine this; if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for another five minutes. Allow to cool. To serve, place sugar over the custard and use a blowtorch to caramelise the sugar. This recipe serves eight.

28.07.17 Tailgating

Words: Cormac Casey

Stupid Tailgating EIGHTY kilometres from home on the final leg of a three-week 7,000km road trip taking in unrestricted Autobahn routes, nine Alpine passes, a few busy Italian cities and London’s M25 only to encounter the most dangerous leg of the journey – from Adare to Newcastlewest. Not a dangerous road but a dangerous driver. We all encounter stupid on the road and sometimes we do stupid and generally we can accept stupid as a one-off act but being stupid for a longer period of time is unacceptable. On leaving the town of Adare I noticed in my rear-view mirror a young lady in a red VW Golf approach quite rapidly behind me. Bear in mind my journey to date and home is close, I wasn’t hanging about. There was a long line of traffic entering Adare. An overtaking opportunity for her was greatly reduced. She couldn’t set up an overtaking manoeuvre but she was still closing quickly until she reached the point that I was unable to see her car’s headlights in my rear-view mirror. There are rules around this but I have a simple one, if I can’t see the number plate of the following car in my rear-view mirror, that car is in my space. Now we have a problem – she had well and truly entered my space. Standing in line for a rock concert, uncomfortable – 100kph in a car, absolutely looking to pick a fight. However I’m not that type of guy (on this occasion) so I slowed enough to let her pass when the opportunity

presented itself. A quick check in the mirror, she doesn’t seize the opportunity – in fact, she is looking to her left and appears to be texting. She is now driving her car using peripheral vision and my bumper as her reference. Now I am concerned, again I can’t see the headlights, that is how close she is. Her sixth sense has well and truly captured my attention. My first attempt at creating distance didn’t work, so now I put another car between us. This only worked for a moment as that car pulled in. Maybe I should do the same but I just want to get home. However I tried it again on two more occasions but she followed on both and resumed tailgating. On my last attempt to put distance, she races up to my bumper, this time drinking from a coffee cup and again looking to her left and

still appears to be texting. For a brief moment when she looked out the windscreen I seized the opportunity to signal my concerns. A tip on the brake pedal – enough to engage the brake lights but not to slow my progress. Her reaction caused her to spill the contents of her coffee cup on herself and drop her phone. Putting aside my fear of a potential accident I am impressed at her ability to multitask; tailgate, text and take on refreshments, all at 100kph. Unfortunately this spillage has given her something else to do while tailgating and texting. However once all cleaned up, normal activities resume, back to texting and, oh yes, tailgating. I am impressed. Newcastlewest only a few kilometres away; on safety grounds it may be time to concede and pull over. Thankfully on entering the first roundabout she took the first exit and removed herself from our route. The sense of relief that this short, but potentially dangerous, journey was over, but it is only beginning for someone else. This person is a danger to herself and other road users and there is only one outcome and it is a serious accident. And it will happen, statistics prove it. Be safe on the roads – DON’T TAILGATE – FOR YOUR OWN SAKE… On a final note, in an accident tailgaters are 100% liable no matter what the circumstances – period.

Rally

Meeke & Nagle Are Back KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle are back competing in this weekend’s Rally Finland after being sidelined by Citroen on the last round to make room for Andreas Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen was drafted in to further assess the potential or shortcomings of the Citroen C3 WR car amid a torrid year so far with the car underperforming and driver errors. To add insult to injury, Citroen has also drafted in the help of nine-time WRC champion Sebastian Loeb for further feedback. Citroen has also announced

that this season is a write-off and they are focusing on next year’s car. Citroen took a year out to develop the current car hoping to be in contention for 2017. Kris Meeke played a key role in the development of this car, now must be under pressure to retain his seat in 2018. I’m sure the focus will be to bring the car home on the remaining events regardless of the result. He knows the car is under performing and with Citroen treating the remainder of the season as a development programme there is no room

for error and even less for glory. A tough way to end such a promising season. On the plus side, Citroen have deep pockets and that can force results. They are a big company and these poor results are every public. So the end of the season should show progress and potential for next year. For Meeke, chasing glory in the current car is fruitless, so a more prudent approach may be required for the remainder of the season, the question is “can Meeke be prudent?” Can any competitive person be so?

Crunch Race For Ferrari In Budapest FERRARI head into this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix looking for their first victory since May. Mercedes have won three from the last four races so Ferrari will not want to lose more ground to Mercedes going into the summer break. Vettel leads the drivers’ championship by one point after his lead was slashed by a puncture in the final laps in Silverstone. The Hungaroring presents another challenge for tyres, and with temperatures in the region of 30 degrees forecast for the weekend, tyre management is likely to

be an issue for all teams and Ferrari can ill afford a repeat of Silverstone going into the summer break. However the big talking point around the Hungaroring this weekend will be the Renault test session next week. Robert Kubica has been given the green light by the FIA to compete in an official 2017 test session. Kubica will pilot Renault’s 2017 car for the first time following two successful tests in the 2012 model earlier this year. The 32-year-old was forced to quit F1 in 2011 following life-changing injuries to his right arm sustained in a rally crash.

Two budding Ferrari F1 fans: Evan and Isaac Casey on a recent visit to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy. On their trip they also visited Modena, home of Enzo Ferrari and got to see Ferrari compete in the Austrian Grand Prix.

Mighty Meitheal Sweeps Into Action TWENTY-FOUR hardworking volunteers gave Killarney the edge on Monday as they were out in force ahead of Tidy Towns judging. All had rallied to the call to make a difference and show pride in our town’s appearance and ensured the roundabout, in front of Daly’s SuperValu and Hotel Killarney looks its absolute best. The soaring temperatures last Monday week, meanwhile, failed to deter the determined group who took on Killarney Tidy Towns’ “Pike Hill Challenge” with aplomb. Seventeen hardworking volun-

teers ensured the appearance of a major approach road to the town underwent a real facelift. “Considering that it was real barbecue weather, it is testament to the commitment for our volunteers that they showed up in the boiling heat to put the edge on the approach road to our town,” said Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns. The next clean-up takes place on Monday week, August 7. This will cover the Muckross Road, with volunteers meeting at 6.30pm at the entrance of Cahernane Hotel. All are welcome.

NOVENA TO ST. THERESE In loving memory of Timmy McGillicuddy, late of Bounard, Gneeveguilla, who died on the 27th July 2016. God came and touched your face, Then he whispered soft and low, Come with me Timmy, It’s time to go, The gates of Heaven opened wide, The angels lined up side by side, A special guest is on his way, The day they took my brother away, It broke my heart to lose you, The pain never goes away, May god whisper in your ear to hear, That I will always love and miss you, And wish you were here. Missed and loved always, your sister Breda, Denny and Norma.

O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of Heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of your life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intersession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity. Amen. L.M

In loving memory of Zoe O’Connor, Hazelwood Drive, Killarney who died on the 31st of July 2015. We think of you with love today, But that is nothing new, We thought about you yesterday, And the days before that too, Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, Go has you in his keeping, We have you in our hearts, You were always there, When we needed yo, No task to great or small, With willing hands and loving heart, For us you did it all. Always loved and remembered by her mother Mary, sister Nicola, brothers Colin & Dylan, sisters-in-law Clare & Valerie, nieces Mia & Aoife, nephew Cian, family & friends. Anniversary Mass for Zoe on Sat 29th July at 6.15pm at the Cathedral.

2ND ANNIVERSARY O’CONNOR

In loving memory of Zoe O’Connor who died on 31st of July 2015. Memories of you are lovingly kept Someone too special to ever forget Your wish today would be no fuss Just to be remembered by all of us. Sadly missed & always remembered, Sheila.

36TH ANNIVERSARY O’DONOGHUE In loving memory of my mother Mary Bridget, late of St Brendan’s Terrace, Killarney who died on the 28th of July 1981. On her soul sweet Jesus have mercy. Our Lady of Perpetual Help pray for her. We always have memories to cherish, And hold of a wonderful mother, More precious than gold, Always remembered by your loving daughter Chrissie and family.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. H.H

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. L.M

Garden Magic Debby Looney

Midsummer sees perennials at their best, says Debby Looney

Picking A Perennial THERE are so many perennials to choose from, it would be difficult to pick just a few, so I decided to cheat and go for whole families! Such as the Salvia group, or Sage, as it is better known. We are all familiar with culinary sage, but not everyone is aware that it is a very close relative to the red Salvia we plant as summer bedding – yes, the one that is a culinary delight for slugs! There is a fantastic range of plants between those two cousins, Salvia Hot Lips, (red and white), Fairy Queen, (bluey grey), Maraschino, (red), Raspberry Delight, (cerise), Amistad, (blue), Black and Blue (it’s in the name!), the list goes on. The great thing about them all is that they are long flowering, hardy, both in wet, dry and wind, and an absolute favourite with bees and pollinators. For a comprehensive guide to all Sages, visit Better Homes and Gardens - Gardeners Guide to Salvias. Another large group of perennials which are looking good are the so-called “prairie plants”, such as Helenium, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Bergamot. Most of these plants have flower shape in common, they are often daisy shaped. However the colours they come in are unlimited! Echinaceas come in whites, oranges, pink and red. One of my favourites is Pow Wow – a very compact variety which withstands wind. Bergamots are strongly scented, and produce masses of flowers. Again, a compact variety is “pink Supreme”. All these daisy-shaped flowers are very attractive to Hoverflies, which we gardeners must welcome into our gardens! Hoverflies look a little like wasps - this is an example of Batesian mimicry, where a potentially edible animal resembles an inedible one, in this case a wasp. Larvea of the hoverfly prey on aphids, making them very important guests! I have recently “discovered” a new Poplar variety, “Purple Tower”, though I admit I am several years behind! This Poplar has rich dark burgundy leaves, and I plan to pollard the one or two (yes maybe three!) I have bought. Poplars are great trees for pollarding – this is cutting the upper branches of the tree back each year to encourage new strong branches. This tree will grow more vigorous as it’s root system grows, and as it is able to supply more energy to the top growth, that growth will result in larger, glossier leaves. I can’t wait! (As with all poplars, do not plant near a house or wall.) • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels MATTHEW 13:44-52: Have you ever found yourself saying, “that was worth it” after giving up something (such as time, pleasure, or money)? What was the treasure that made the sacrifice worthwhile? The “kingdom of heaven” is when God is really the ruler in our life. What treasures have you obtained when you allow God to be at the centre of your life? In life we gather a lot of things, some good and some bad. The wise person in the kingdom of heaven knows how to sit down and make decisions on what to keep and what to discard. When have you undertaken that kind of discernment? What have you discarded? What have you retained? John Byrne, OSA, Veritas

Hidden Treasure “A PARABLE leaves you with sufficient doubt about its meaning to tease the mind into active thought,” according to CH Dodd. Hidden or buried treasure sounds like an adventure story. This is intended by Jesus. Finding the kingdom of God is like an adventure in which there is a treasure that we did not expect to find, that fills us with wonder and tension and drama. Not everyone finds this treasure, which is what makes the story exciting. Jesus could have said that the man dug up the treasure

Support Groups

and took what he wanted and left the rest out in the field for others to find easily, but he doesn’t. The man hides the treasure again. We who find the treasure of the kingdom of God will come to understand (whether immediately or over time), that it is more valuable than all that we have – all that our lives consist of. The treasure of the kingdom of God does not fit nicely or easily into the lives that we have already constructed for ourselves. Treasure stories are all about disrupted lives. One cannot discover hidden treasure and remain the same or continue, in an undisrupted way, to live the life one has always lived. In a sense, the measure of the disruption of our former lives is also a measure of the meaning of the treasure we have found. Some of us, perhaps, have not yet discovered the treasure that is worth exchanging our lives for. The Parable of the Hidden Treasure – Pete Bauer, Veritas

Killarney Athletic Complete Historic Double In Style The league champions added another trophy to their cabinet following an accomplished performance in the cup final, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

Greyhound Bar KO Cup Final Killarney Athletic 3-0 Mitchels Avenue Killarney Athletic capped a memorable season in style with a comprehensive victory over Mitchels Avenue in the cup final in Tralee on Sunday. We played well against a very decent side and managed to boss the game from start to finish. Were it not for a man of the match performance from David Hennessy in the Mitchels goal, the scoreline could have been a bit more emphatic but we were happy to just get over the line. Seán Cournane, who has had a superb month or so, gave us an early lead with a powerful strike and when Shane Lynch doubled the advantage on the half-hour mark, we found ourselves in a great position. We created a good few chances in the second half but it took until the 90th minute to get the third. Will Courtney broke free before unselfishly squaring to Shane Doolan who made no mistake to make it 3-0 and seal the victory. To be honest there was a kind of strange atmosphere within the camp after the game. There certainly wasn’t the same jubilation there was after the league final but I suppose that’s to be expected when you’re playing against lower league opposition. Mitchels Avenue are a very good team but we would have been strong favourites going

It’s rare enough for teams to win the double, and it’s obviously the first time Athletic have done it, so we’re all very proud to have been able to make a bit of history

into the match so there was that side of things, and nothing was going to top winning our first ever league title. We’re also all delighted that the season is finally over. We started training last August so it has been a ridiculously long year and as much as we all love soccer, training and playing for eleven months straight definitely takes its toll.

Having said all that, it was the ideal end to the campaign for us. It’s rare enough for teams to win the double, and it’s obviously the first time Athletic have done it, so we’re all very proud to have been able to make a bit of history. Stuart Templeman and Alan Brady deserve a huge amount of credit for their commitment this season, as do the likes of Michael Lindsay, Brian O’Reilly and JP Mullins who all helped out with coaching throughout the year. Our chairman Mike O’Shea also gave us phenomenal support, as did the great Don O’Donoghue, and it was nice to see so many of our old trainers and former teammates out on the field after the game. The club’s success this season is as much theirs as it is ours. When you consider that we very nearly went down last June it’s a serious turnaround and hopefully we can push on next year and challenge for trophies again. We have some good young players who will be hoping to make a contribution next time out and although a couple of the older lads are talking about packing it in, they might feel a bit differently after a well-deserved break. Athletic team: Brian O’Connor; Conor Farrell, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan; Seán Cournane, Michael O’Donoghue, Shane Doolan, Will Courtney; Shane Lynch and Daithí Casey. Subs used: Jamie Doolan, Eamonn Lavin, Brian O’Reilly, Mike Milner and Michael Lindsay.

Kerry v Galway In Croke Park Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald KERRY will meet Galway in the All Ireland SFC quarter-final at Croke Park on Sunday next at 2pm. Galway defeated Donegal i n the qualifiers, thus earning their place in the quarter final. Kerry are the Munster champions. Kerry defeated Clare and Cork on the way to the Munster title. The latter was won very easily as Cork put up a very poor show here in Killarney. In fairness to the Rebels they upped their game last week and pushed Mayo to just a single point 0-27 to 2-20. How good are Galway? They were well beaten by Roscommon in the Connacht final, but they were in flying form in the qualifier last weekend, when they ran up a big score defeating Donegal 4-17 to 0-14. Eamonn Fitzmaurice rates Galway. “We will be taking nothing for granted on Sunday,” he said at last Monday’s press conference. It is interesting to record that Galway were the first team to win the All Ireland through the back door in 2001. They have a second chance again this year when they face Kerry on Sunday. They have on board some of the Under 21 side that shocked Kerry in this grade earlier this year. So much was expected of Jack O’Connor’s team, but Galway proved the masters in that semi-final. Goal scorers for Galway on Saturday last were two from Heaney and a goal each from Cummins and Silke (penalty). The other forwards chipped in for valuable scores.

BRYAN SHEEHAN The Kerry team has not been picked as we go to press. Fitzmaurice said on Monday: “Bryan Sheehan is very doubtful suffering from that hamstring problem, but all the rest are fully fit.” With Killian Young and Johnny Buckley fully fit they will be challenging strongly for places in the starting line-up. Midfield is crucial where David Moran and Anthony Maher face the formidable Galway duo of Conroy and Flynn. With four strong fielders in the middle one can expect plenty use of the mark. Kerry rely very much on O’Donoghue and Geaney to do the scoring. Both are playing very well, but what happens on the day both are marked so tightly that their scoring returns are limited? I put this to the Kerry boss. He replied: “When we played Tyrone they were very closely marked so the rest of the forwards scored 1-10. It opens up scoring opportunities for the others.” One would hope that next Sunday’s game will be traditional and the wide-open spaces of Croke Park

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy PRESEASON – one of the few words to send shivers down a player’s spine! As clubs start their preseason training, attention is slowly but surely turning to next season for all senior squads across the country. Our very own senior squad returned to preseason training last Tuesday evening at Aghadoe and Facebook is being lit up with preseason notices from all clubs. The warm weather will certainly help focus the mind of everyone returning after the summer break. Rugby clubs are always looking for new players to

will suit both sides.

KERRY DEFENCE The Kerry defence played well against Cork, except on the few occasions when Cork ran at them. On such occasions they looked uncomfortable and the same can be said of any team that runs at the opposition. Dublin are the masters of this tactic with a very mobile half-back line well able to travel at high speed forcing the opposition’s defence to back pedal, a point put by Fitzmaurice. In fairness to the Kerry half-forward line of Geaney, McCarthy and Walsh (they) are great workers and play defensively, when the need arises.

EAMONN FITZMAURICE Fitzmaurice said he was disappointed to see Brendan Kealy retire, “but I can see his frustration not getting game time. We parted on very good terms and I wished him well “. He continued, “Shane Ryan and Shane Murphy have been in our plans for some time and they have good experiences. Brian is playing well and usually you don’t change the goalkeeper during the championship.” I expect Kerry to win, but the margin won’t be great.

JUNIORS QUALIFY FOR FINAL Kerry Juniors are through to the All Ireland JFC final

swell the ranks and anyone interested should definitely ‘give it a try’ as the saying goes! So, what do we as a club look forward to next year? Well, last season has been a hugely successful one for our seniors who won promotion to Division 2 of the Munster Junior League and the focus will be to power on and add to the silverware, which was hard earned last season. The lads won the Galwey/Foley Cup as well as the Martin O’Sullivan Cup last season to add to the hugely exciting run to gain promotion and will want to build from here next season. Our fantastic U14s won the West Munster League and the Cup last season and will look to push on for more glory with our

having defeated Leitrim 1-16 to 1-9 in last Saturday’s semi-final in Limerick. Leitrim did score an early goal, but this was negated five minutes later when Tomás Ó Sé scored a goal for Kerry. This was followed by a period of domination by Kerry yielding 6 points in a row. Leitrim battled bravely adding five points, but Kerry kept well ahead with five points each from Éanna Ó Conchúir and Philip O’Connor to put the issue beyond doubt and hopes for yet another AllIreland for Kerry.

SOPHIA O’SULLIVAN Sophia O’Sullivan, daughter of former world champion Sonia O’Sullivan, is the Australian 1500 metre champion and the 15 year old added the Irish title to that last weekend. There to support her was Sonia her mother, who was very proud of her daughter’s achievement. The genes are good, very good, so look out for Sophia.

GAMBLING RESTRICTION Bookmakers will be forced to reject bets of over €2000 from anyone without ID. This is a new bid to prevent criminals money laundering. Betting shops processed €2.7 b last year from customers who were not asked for ID.

U16s unlucky not to win silverware. Our U18s will be looking to continue the excellent work last year as they develop into a formidable force next season. Our Minis section continues to flourish with more and more children playing rugby. We continue to develop and promote rugby with a focus on fun and as a club will look to develop our Girls section and hopefully more and more girls will enjoy rugby. All in all it promises to be a busy year for everyone playing rugby in the club and the excellent band of coaches and mentors. It’s exciting to look forward to the season ahead and I hope that we will all have another season to savour.

Mark Harnett

Crokes youngster Mark Harnett talks to Adam Moynihan about his minor teammates, his dismal record from the spot and his favourite actor

What’s the story Mark? No story. You’re a hard man to track down. Oh I’m flat out. Are you playing ball at the moment? Yeah we’ve a minor County League final coming up on the 23rd of August. Who are ye playing? Ye’re obviously strong enough? Stacks. Yeah we’re strong enough alright but we lost in the County Championship there during the week. How are you playing yourself? Grand. Alright like. It depends what time of the year it is. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Jack Griffin. He’s capable of anything. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? Alan O’Sullivan. He often gets the train back to Tralee. Who’s the biggest moaner? I’ll get in trouble for this but I’ll have to say our trainer, Mike Cooper. Who’s the worst-dressed? The three minors. Michael Potts, Jack Griffin and Nelu O’Doherty. They never take off their Kerry tracksuits. Who spends the most time in the gym? Conor Quirke. He’s in the shape of his life. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Crokes this year, who would it be? Jack O’Connor. He’s overage this year. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with?

Mikey Moynihan when I was playing with Celtic. He’d put the ball in your lap. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Conor Quirke. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I’d go to Aghadoe Graveyard. Diehard. What’s your proudest sporting moment? The East Kerry Minor Championship last year. We beat Firies in the final. And the most embarrassing? Missing three penalties this year. How are you still on penalties if you’re after missing three of them? I’m gone now. I took four. One hit off the post and I got the rebound. And I scored one. Missed three. If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Tyson Fury. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Tyson Fury, Seánie Quigley and Henrik Larsson. That would be a good session. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Horse racing. I reckon I’d be a good jockey. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? The Munster Hurling Final in 2017 in Thurles. We went up to that. We had some craic.

Do you have any nicknames? Trigger or Fat Head. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Snapchat. Who’s your favourite snapper? Cormac Foley. What’s your most-used emoji?

What’s the best show on TV? The Jeremy Kyle Show. What would you sing at karaoke? Twist and Shout. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Paudie Clifford. What would you have for your last meal? Bacon and cabbage. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Barry Keoghan. And last one: can you tell me a joke? Lee O’Donoghue. Good one! Thanks boy. No bother.

Flesk Valley Rowing Club

County Championships: The Fenit Kerry County Coastal Championships took place last Sunday at Fenit. Yet again it was another memorable regatta for the Valley, with the club bringing home 3 golds, and 2 silvers and 2 bronze. Our U16 boys crew

of Tommy McGuire, Finn O Sullivan, Evan Kissane and Chris Carey, coxed by Rory Leane stormed to victory with an impressive display. John Fleming and Colm O Sullivan proved there’s life in the old dogs yet, when along with Karol Kelly and Sean O Connell they triumphed in the Prevet men’s race, before they teamed up Nicola O Donoghue and Yvonne O Leary to win the mixed senior race. Flesk Valley U14 girls A&B crews finished 2nd and 3rd respectively with our A Crew cruelly losing out by 1 second to Workman. Overall it was a hugely successful and enjoyable day for the Valley with many of our under 12 and under 14 crews competing in their first regatta and putting in fine performances. Special thanks to all who coxed on the day, Rory Leane, Aoife Brosnan, Sean O Connell, Donal Kelly and Chris Slattery, to Micheal O Sullivan and Denis O Donoghue for organizing the crews and to all parents who helped out. All Ireland Championships: Well done to Danny Lyne who competed recently in the All Ireland Championships at Inishcarra putting in a fine display when finishing 4th in the Masters category.

Commercial Rowing Club

Sympathy of all club members is extended to club member Henry Bartlett and family on the recent death of his mother. Kathleen, May She Rest in Peace. CLUB DEVELOPMENT: The club is now in the process of completing the final stage of the club upgrading by the laying of a pathway which hopefully will enhance the image of the area around Ross Castle. A special word of thanks is extended to the members of the Killarney Area Municipal Authority for allocating a grant of 5OO Euros for this work. TRAINING: Club members are now in training for future regattas. AGM: The club AGM will be held in late September.

Fossa RC

A big thank you to all members and supporters who turned out for the Fenit Coastal Regatta on Sunday last. Despite a few mishaps with the boat

the club was well represented in many categories. Congratulations to all those new members who rowed in their first regatta, and those who placed in races. Gig Regatta in Kenmare on Sunday next. Sive Coastal Regatta is on August 5th & 6th with the All Irelands in Ballyshannon on August 18th to 20th. We look forward to the next few weeks of rowing.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

The Batty O Brien Memorial Cup Competition took place on Sunday last with competitors fishing on Lough Lein from 10;30 to 1800 hrs. in conditions which varied during the day but which could not be described as unsuitable. The top three anglers on the day were as follows: 1) Frank O Sullivan, 2) Donal Doherty, 3) Anthony Griffin. The heaviest fish on the day went to the rod of Donal Doherty. Also, the passing of a longtime campaigner in Iceland recently should not go without mention - Having fought tirelessly for 27 years for the survival and restoration of the wild Atlantic Salmon, it was not surprising that tributes poured in from anglers and environmentalists all over the world in recognition of what Orri Vigfusson had achieved by setting up the North Atlantic Salmon Fund. One such tribute describes him as “the greatest friend wild Atlantic salmon could ever have”. To mark the sad passing of this great friend to Irish Anglers, FISSTA organized a wreath laying on the river Laune, a fitting water to mark the efforts of Orri to seek as best possible the continued survival of the salmon in the face of dangers from commercial over exploitation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

East Kerry GAA

EAST KERRY SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1 FINAL: (Frank Doran Safeguard Security) This very well contested final, in Fitzgerald Stadium, saw Fossa just coming up short by a point. A Dean Fitzgerald goal was the difference between the sides at half time: Rathmore 1-7 Fossa 0-5. The game continued at pace in the second half and Fossa levelled with Domhnaill O’Sullivan goal - 1-10 a piece on 42nd minute. A scatter of points saw Rathmore ahead by the minimum on the final whistle - Rathmore 1-13 Fossa 1-12. Sponsor, Frank Doran and East Kerrys Tim Ryan presented the Cup to Rathmore captain Brendan O’Keeffe. MD O’SHEA EAST REGION U14 LEAGUE – FINALS: The supporters of both teams in the MD O’Shea East Region U14 League division 2 Final were kept on edge untill the final whistle, with both teams serving up a great final in Fitzgerald Stadium. Kilcummin led at the break and despite Dr Crokes

reducing the gap to the minimum in the third quarter Kilcummin finished the stronger to win on a final score of Kilcummin 5-18 Dr Crokes 5-13. Sean O’Sullivan presented the Shield to Kilcummin Captain, Jack McClain. Beaufort and Fossa served up a cracking Division 4 final in Fitzgerald Stadium. Fossa started brightly but Beaufort led at the break: Beaufort 3-1 Fossa 1-4. During the secod half Fossa narrowed the gap to a single score with goal and a point and could have been closer but for 2 great saves by the Fossa goal keeper. Fossa GAA

SENIORS: Fossa played St. Micheals/ Foilmore on Sunday in what was an important game for both sides. Fossa started well with points from Donald O’Sullivan (2) and Tadgh O’Shea giving them a lead that they were to never relinquish. Even though Fossa dominated possession they were finding it difficult to transfer that to the scoreboard, however a brace of points from Donald O’Sullivan gave them a 0-07 to 0-04 lead at the break. Three Tadgh O’Shea frees at the start of the second half gave Fossa a comfortable lead and they played well in this half. They put together some good team scores while the defence, lead by Paddy Sheehan who played very well at centre back, gave St. Mi-

chaels/Foilmore attackers no room to threaten. Tadgh O’Shea kicked a couple of excellent points along with a point from Lorcan Daly to seal a vital win on a score of 0-15 to 0-09.

Killarney Legion

CO.LEAGUE: The Seniors maintained their unbeaten record in Division 2 with a hard earned draw away to Ardfert. The hosts who find themselves in a perilous position close to the bottom played with great intensity and verve and lead at half time by 1-7 to 1-4. We had the benefit of a slightly

fortuitous goal in that half and the accuracy of Jamie O Sullivan and the Conors -Keane and Culloty kept us in touch. Ardfert again sprung out of the traps in the second period and lead by 4 having slipped in for a second goal. But credit where it’s due our lads stuck to the task and aided by Cathal Sheahans accuracy (he kicked 3 points) in a counter attacking role we took control in the final quarter. It must be said that Shaun Keane and Billy Maguire put in a good shift while Damien O Sullivan’s presence steadied the defence. Chris Davies put in an industrious hour on the forty as the teams finished level after a tough battle. With the league taking a break for 3 weeks we now find ourselves in top spot with 2 games remaining. But with Waterville and Glenflesk to come there is still plenty work to be done in those games but all in all you would have to be content with our present position. U15 GIRLS: Killarney Legion 4-9 Austin Stacks 4-7 A fine two-point win for the u15 girls in a contest that didn’t start auspiciously for them conceding 2-1 right from the off. Showing admirable composure and no little skill they gradually overhauled their opponents to snatch a fine win at the final whistle. U14 BOYS: Killarney Legion 4-15 Kenmare Shamrocks 4-12 A fast keenly contested league game saw the u14’s deservedly get the better of a very good Kenmare side. NeXT up are Austin Stacks followed by Dr.Crokes. PÓSADH SPEISIALTA: Heartiest congratulations to the ever-popular Kieran Healy and fabulous bride Rhonda who just got married in the past week, long life and happiness to them both.
