Icelandic Thunderclap On Editor's View Franciscan Friary Steps Words: Eve Kelliher
Words: Eve Kelliher Pic: Eamonn Keogh
A scene from the YMCA Ireland and the Icelandic Viking flashmob demonstration at The Franciscan Friary/KDYS Killarney on Wednesday.
THE steps leading to Killarney’s Franciscan Friary reverberated with unique sounds this week. Passersby stopped to enjoy the spectacle as the Icelandic Viking “thunderclap” erupted at precisely 3.45pm on Wednesday, as part of a flashmob hosted by the team at the Kerry Diocesan Youth Centre, Killarney. The event, also spearheaded by YMCA Ireland, unfolded on the iconic front steps leading to the historic church and to the adjacent youth centre, at Fairhill. “The activity was part of a youth exchange entitled F:IRE and ICE (Your Future/Fun/Fitness/Further yourself: Ireland and Iceland) which was designed to work on personal development and intercultural work with the groups through participation in outdoor education, sports and teambuilding,” said a spokesperson for Kerry Diocesan Youth Centre.
New Opportunities For Young People In Killarney And Across Europe TUESDAY, JUNE 6, will see Killarney Youth Centre, Kerry Diocesan Youth Service, become the first youth centre in Ireland to be awarded the Quality Label for Youth Centres from the Council of Europe. The award will be presented by Antje Rothemund, head of the Youth Department with the Council of Europe, in the presence of the Minister or Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone. “This award means we will be working with the Council of Europe in new and exciting ways,” said Tim O’Donoghue of the Killarney centre. “We are proud that it will create multiple opportunities for young people and communities both here and across Europe to come together and exchange ideas, innovate and celebrate.”
“In this exchange the young people were given an opportunity to challenge themselves out in the wilderness away from their normal comfort zones and to get to know a new culture, environments and sports. The hope was to encourage young people to discover their own strengths, new skills and ways to live a healthy lifestyle, become more nature aware, and open their mind to the social and cultural complexity of the world.” The objective of the exchange was to encourage participants to become actively engaged in their local communities and beyond, as European citizens. “The ‘flashmob’ organised by the group had an Icelandic thunderclap theme, to highlight Iceland and to allow both Icelandic and Irish young people to have fun,” added the spokesperson.
IT’S HARD to believe we are already cruising into the June bank holiday weekend and Killarney is doing so in style thanks to Ireland BikeFest which has been revving up for action in recent days. A record number of women bikers is expected to take part in this year’s event; see our story in this week’s edition. Another highlight of the festival is the rideout on Sunday – you can register for this at the Celtic Thunder Chapter’s hospitality desk located in the Harley Bar in the Bike Village, at The Gleneagle grounds. This week also saw the Heart of Killarney volunteers erect the second defibrillator phonebox in the greater Killarney area. This life-saving facility is the same as its counterpart on Main Street and is located outside the Golden Nugget bar and restaurant in Fossa. The determination of the Heart of Killarney team impressed me as always when I caught up with the volunteers in Fossa on Tuesday. And their sense of purpose has also influenced other communities in Ireland keen to follow suit. A third life-saving phone box will be established in Killarney, in the Woodlawn area, in the near future. Congratulations are also in order to the team at the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service’s youth centre at Killarney’s Fairhill which on Tuesday will become the first youth centre in Ireland to be awarded the Quality Label for Youth Centres by the Council of Europe.

THE doors are ready to swing open on Killarney House on Tuesday, July 4. The general manger of Killarney House, Pat Dawson, said the team was looking forward to the showing the iconic, newly restored building to the public. The date of the opening has special significance, said Mr Dawson. “We picked the date in recognition of the generosity of John and Mary McShain who gifted Ross Castle, the Lakes of Killarney and Innisfallen Island to the Irish people and who sold Killarney House and Gardens to the State for less than its real market value,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “Without their philanthropy, Killarney would not now have such a fantastic resource to enjoy.” Against the stunning backdrop of the sun-dappled gardens – which have lived up to their promise as Killarney’s answer to Dublin’s St Stephen’s Green – Mr Dawson added: “The next five weeks will be hectic-installing crystal chandeliers, laying historic rugs, hanging curtains and blinds and returning the period furniture to the drawing room, dining room, living room and library. “We have advertised for visitor guides and look forward to building a new team at Killarney House and Gardens.”

Women are embracing biking like never before
“
LADIES VIEW was the perfect spot for bikers who wanted to rev up to a practice run on Wednesday in advance of Ireland BikeFest which rolls into Killarney this June Bank Holiday weekend. You see, a record number of women bikers from across the globe will converge on Killarney for the festival. To celebrate the growing popularity of biking among women, the Ladies of Harley® will host two events during this year’s festival, a meet and greet which takes place at The Brehon at 5pm on Saturday, and a Ladies of Harley® rideout which will depart the Bike Village at 2pm on Sunday. Ladies of Harley® promotes female participation in motorcycling worldwide. Their message for other women? If something makes you happy,
pecially daunting for women who may not know someone that shares their interest,” said Ladies of Harley® representative Fiona Carroll. “But the number of women’s motorcycle groups is growing, and social media is helping to connect us all.
Women are embracing biking like never before and we are encouraging and helping each other in any way that we can.” Motorcyclists that would like to participate in the ride-out on Sunday can register at the Celtic Thunder Chapter’s hospitality desk located in the Harley Bar in the Bike Village. Ireland BikeFest Killarney is one of Europe’s largest free, open biker festivals. Every make and model of motorbike imaginable along with their owners are welcome to attend. Visitors do not even have to own a bike, they can just bask in the glory of some slick, well-built machines and enjoy the unique party and festival atmosphere of the Bike Village. The festival headquarters, The Bike Village, is located on the grounds of The Gleneagle Hotel.
Triple Success As Killarney Duo Power Into Action For Triathlon
Cormac Rowe and Jack McGuire who were medallists in the Castle Triathlon Series at the weekend.
FRIENDS, classmates and triathlon partners Cormac Rowe and Jack McGuire proved a force to be reckoned with as they crossed the finish line of the challenging Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon not once but three times. This was fifth year the duo, both aged 12, took part the event, which takes place in south Galway as part of the Castle Triathlon Series, and involves a swim, cycle and run. As well as completing Sunday’s contest as individuals, Cormac and Jack competed in the relay twice, as they were the only two-person team entered, and received special recognition as a team of two competing as four.
THIS year will be the sixth year of Stephanie O’Sullivan’s Memorial Cycle which will take place on Sunday, June 4. Stephanie tragically lost her life at the age of 20 years in November 2011. The loss of this beautiful young and vibrant lady shocked and saddened all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The O’Sullivan family have created an annual charity cycle in aid of suicide prevention to save another family from going through the turmoil of losing a loved one to suicide. The cycle starts and finishes at The Nagle Centre in Milltown. Cyclists can register is on the day. The cycle starts at 10am sharp and the entry fee is €20. The cycle incorporates two distances of 40km and 80km. All cyclists and volunteers will enjoy a barbecue and live music afterwards.” A lot of work goes into the cycle that no one sees and all the effort and support is greatly appreciated as the proceeds are in aid of two worthy charities the Samaritans and Killorglin Mental Health Association,” said Dan Joe O’Sullivan, Stephanie’s father. “The family would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the cyclists, sponsors and volunteers who assist to make Stephanie’s memorial cycle a continued success.”

Taoiseach Launches Artist Residencies At Muckross THE Taoiseach Enda Kenny was joined by Cllr Michael O’Shea, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, and Pat Dawson, National Parks & Wildlife Service Regional Manager, Muckross House for the launch of the Creative Ireland Kerry programme and the announcement of new artist residencies at Muckross House. An immediate example of the potential of Creative Ireland in Kerry is an expanded partnership between the Arts Council, Kerry County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Trustees of Muckross House, who are providing accommodation on the Muckross Estate for future artist in residence schemes. Speaking in Muckross House on Friday, the Taoiseach said: “I am delighted to be here and to see so many cultural organisations represented today. These organisations make a huge impact of the lives and wellbeing of the people of Kerry, and the people of Ireland. Creative Ireland Kerry is about you, the people of Kerry – it is about the ancient traditional and living culture that is integral to daily life here.” The Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Af-
fairs and the Trustees of Muckross House are now joining with Kerry County Council in supporting these residencies by providing the use of two cottages in Killarney National Park for the artists’ accommodation. “We are delighted to offer this type of patronage for creativity, and supporting culture locally is in keeping with the legacy of the Muckross Estate,” stated Pat Dawson, Regional Manager. For further information see www. Facebook.com/KerryCoArts and @KerryCoArts, or contact Kerry County Council’s Arts Office at arts@kerrycoco.ie or on 0667183541. Killarney Gardai Raise Awareness Starcamp Summer Camps Of The Need For Home Security
ALMOST one in four summer burglaries involve entry through an unsecured door of window, so Killarney Gardaí are urging homeowners to make sure their properties are secured. Gardaí have unveiled details of the National Crime Prevention Campaign of 2017 entitled ‘Summertime Home Security’. This initiative will coincide with the June Bank Holiday weekend and promotional events will run from June 1-8. Most summer residential burglaries occur late at night between midnight and 4am and in the afternoon between noon and 3pm. Jewellery and cash are the objects stolen which amount to the highest value. Smaller, less expensive tools such as con-saws and chainsaws are more likely to be stolen in the summer months. There are more burglaries where bicycles are stolen in the summer than in the winter. Gardaí advise whether at home or going out, turn on some lights, use timer switches. Lock all doors and windows, use your house alarm and store keys safely, away from windows and letterboxes. Record details of valuables and don’t keep large
cash amounts at home. If your home is going to be vacant during the summer period, ask a trusted neighbour or family member to conduct frequent checks of the property. Ensure the house alarm is set. Check all doors and windows are secure. Install timers on internal lights and motion detectors on external lights to make the house appear occupied. Ensure that the building doesn’t look neglected. Ask a neighbour to collect post or if you are going to be away for longer periods arrange a “mail minder” service with An Post to retain post for collection and place a ‘No Junk Mail’ sign on letter-box. Inform the local Garda station about the premises being vacant to afford passing attention on patrols. If you are going on holiday and your home is going to be vacant, be mindful of what you post on social media. A barrier of prickly hedge along your boundary or underneath a window will help deter thieves. Hedges and shrubs in the front garden should be kept to a height of no more than three feet in order to avoid giving a burglar a screen behind which he can conceal himself.
STARCAMP Summer Camps are celebrating their 10th birthday and will take place in Killarney from July 24-28. Children will get to boost their confidence, enjoy games as well as act, sing and dance at the camp which will unfold in the Monastery National School. Camps take place in Listowel from July 31-August 4, in Tralee from August 8-12, Kenmare from July 10-14 and Castleisland from August 14-18. Starcamp is aimed at all boys and girls aged 4-12, and it is so much
more than a performing arts summer camp. Activities will include a superhero masterclass taught by a real superhero, news and weather reporting, camp games, arts and crafts and of course singing, dancing and drama. The week is scattered with new and fun surprises with a theme of “kindness” and a Friday finale showcase where all are welcome. This year children will get to act out scenes from movies and sing all their Disney and chart favourites. Book your place at www. starcamp.ie or call 021-4377900.

The Shire Bar
THE Shire Bar in Killarney, which opened in 2014, has gone from strength to strength in the past three years. The Lord of the Ringsthemed pub, located in Michael Collins Place, and owned by local man Ollie Favier of Glenflesk, has become a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. The bar, which specialises in its unique craft beers and in house cocktail called “Hobbit Juice,” has recently expanded it’s drinks offering by launching an extensive gin menu. The bar is now serving food six days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday. Ollie said: “With people’s wants and needs always at the centre of everything we do we wanted to expand our offering to include food to ensure we are further satisfying the needs of our customers. Hence we launched ‘The Shire Gourmet Burgers’. This is high quality food served in a fun and quirky environment and already the reaction has been phenomenal!” As well as that the pub has a great entertainment line-up with live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. “I’ve always been blown away by the support of the people in Killarney and in every venture we embark upon this support only grows and grows,” added Ollie. “We are very fortunate here in The Shire also that we are particularly popular with the overseas market and those who have a interest in Lord of The Rings.” The Shire bar is open seven days a week and more information can be found at www.theshirekillarney.com
WELL done to the Heart of Killarney team which on Wednesday unveiled its latest life-saving “defibrillator phone box” in Fossa. The phone box is the second to be set up in Killarney and is located outside the Golden Nugget bar and restaurant, with the support of owners Mark and Caroline Hallissey. “We will be opening a third Killarney phone box, in Woodlawn, very soon,” said Damien Baker of Heart of Killarney. The initiative has proved such a success since the first phone box opened on Main Street, Killarney, last year that communities across Ireland have followed suit, including as far afield as Carndonagh in Co Donegal. “We are working with a lot of groups to try and bring these phone boxes on-stream and we have been delighted with the response,” said Damien. “We would like to say a special thank you to the Killarney Bikers and Friends group which raised funds for the Fossa phone box and the Cooper family who raised the funds for the Woodlawn phone box through the screenings of The Dawn in Cinema Killarney “We would also like to say thank you to Mark and Caroline Hallissey of the Golden Nugget who have given us huge support.”
Team Killarney In The Saddle For Rás Challenge
Team Killarney: Eoin O’Connell, Marcus Treacy, Richard Maes, Michael Lucey and Leigh Hewerdine.
FIVE top-class Killarney cyclists powered into action for the prestigious An Post Rás challenge. Eoin O’Connell, Marcus Treacy, Richard Maes, Michael Lucey and Leigh Hewerdine, all members of Killarney Cycling Club, made up Team Killarney. The gruelling race features eight stages, with 1200km covered in just eight days at an average speed of 47km an hour. The Rás was filled with ups and downs for Team Killarney, eventually leading to three of the five finishing after a last-minute ad-
dition to team Michael Lucey fell outside the time limit on a hard day six alongside teammate Leigh Hewerdine. The finishers were Eoin O’Connell, Richard Maes and Marcus Treacy. Two top-ten finishes and a county rider stage win by Richard Maes really made for a great An Post Rás for Team Killarney. Joe O’Shea was manager of Team Killarney, and the team was very grateful for his support as well as that of mechanic Billy Reidy, Dave Kenneally and Darren O’Mahoney throughout the week.

Purple Power At Community College THE transition year students of Killarney Community College raised the Purple Flag with pride last Friday. The event, which was a highlight of the transition year graduation ceremony at the school, saw the students awarded certification for their research on “Killarney at night”. “The Purple Flag is an international accreditation scheme for towns and city centres in the evening and at night,” said TY co-ordinator Kerri McCarthy. “It is the ‘gold standard’ for night-time destinations.” Killarney Community College transition year students and Ms McCarthy worked closely with Seamus Whitty from Kerry Life Skills to analyse the research and provide recommendations to the Purple Flag Working group. Attending the graduation ceremony were Killarney Chamber President Paul O’Neill and Councillor Michael Gleeson. In addition, the transition-year students joined forces with Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns to make bird boxes for Killarney National Park.

02.06.17 Exam Tips
Last-Minute Tips For State Exams Candidates With the Leaving Cert commencing next Wednesday, career guidance counsellor Billy Ryle has some advice for students getting ready to sit the examinations.
NEW Invest inPAEDIATRIC the quality of your life Giving you back the gift of hearing CLINIC OPENING SCOTIA HOUSE, MANOR WEST, TRALEE, CO. KERRY
THE waiting is almost over for about 120,000 exam candidates – about 4,000 from Kerry - as the State Exams get underway on Wednesday next. Candidates should approach the state exams confidently because they are extremely well prepared after two years of consistent study. The national results achieved each year in the state exams are also very impressive. In addition, places in further and higher education courses, apprenticeships and traineeships will be very plentiful this year in a buoyant economy. Maintenance The heavy study is done, so the priority is to be mentally and physically alert for the exams. Your best asset going into an exam is a clear and alert mind. Your mental and physical energy needs to be at a high level over the next few weeks. On the evening before each paper, spend an hour or so looking over your notes, so that the important concepts and ideas are fresh in your mind. Strategy Give serious thought to your answering strategy and adopt a planned approach to answering the question papers. Write your answers between the margins and work your way down the page in a neat and orderly manner. Write clearly and legibly. Keep your answers well spread out for easy reading. Enumeration Number each question and sub-question clearly in the left-hand margin. Don’t split questions by answering a part of a question on one page and then the other part further on. If you are unable to completely answer a question leave a page blank to which you can return later. In fact, it’s a good idea to leave about a half page blank at the end of each question. This will allow you to add more information to a question if you wish to do so later in the exam. Quality A well-presented script makes a favourable impression on the corrector but the core of any exam is the quality of your answering. The content of your answer must be relevant to the question asked. Address the topics on the question paper. Be concise, accurate and relevant. Format Be familiar in advance with the format of each paper. Know how the paper is presented. Timing In order to do well in the exam you must present your answers within the time allowed. Be aware of the marking scheme for each paper and work out in advance the approximate time you can afford to spend on each question Scan Spend about five minutes reading the entire exam paper when its handed to you. This preliminary scrutiny of all the questions allows you to settle down and gather your thoughts. Post-mortem Once an exam is over, spend as little time as possible on a post-mortem. The matter is now out of your hands. Leaving Certificate Exam results will be issued on Wednesday, August 16, and CAO First Round Offers will be available on Monday, August 21. •

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
David Geaney Wows The World On Britain’s Got Talent SUPER-TALENTED Kerry dancer David Geaney took to the stage on Wednesday night as part of the third Britain’s Got Talent’s semi-final. During the show’s audition stages, the 22-year-old not only wowed viewers with his impressive Irish dancing skills, he performed in sync with a video recording of himself. On Wednesday, he upped his game, dancing to a remix of Over the Rainbow. While the Dingle superstar narrowly missed out on a place in the Britain’s Got Talent final, his fans at home and beyond have heaped praise on David’s remarkable talent. The five-times world champion is a regular performer in Killarney and is part of the acclaimed Celtic Steps troupe. Judge Amanda Holden said: “Wow, it was kind of like Games of Thrones meets Irish dance, I think the special effects really helped this act become incredible. “The choreography was slick, I like the seriousness, it made it cooler.” Her colleague on the judging panel David Walliams was equally impressed, saying: “It was very original, very smooth and very memorable.”
David Rea of Celtic Steps, Killarney, said: “Since 2012 when we started, David Geaney has been with us every year, just starting back now after finishing fourthyear exams in UL. He is sensational – five times World Champion and rated as the very best freestyler in the world!” The 2017 season is in full flight and Celtic Steps at Killarney Racecourse will be enthralling audiences six nights weekly until mid-October.
Lords Of Strut On Their Way To BGT Semi-Final THE Britain’s Got Talent hopefuls Lords of Strut jetted off to London yesterday ahead of their semi-final performance on the hit ITV show. And customers at Tony’s Bistro on North Main Street in Cork had a surprise rave on Wednesday night as Lords of Strut (Famous Seamus and Seantastic) took to the street outside for an impromptu rave. They wowed the audience and (most of) the judges with their 80s-inspired acrobatic comedy act last weekend. See them here: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=T3tPC4WOH0s

O’Donovan Brothers On The Airwaves IT’S a truth universally acknowledged that Skibbereen is now the rowing capital of Ireland and probably the world. The 2016 Rio Olympics introduced us to the O’Donovan brothers, Gary and Paul, and at this year’s European Championships, Mark O’Donovan - no relation - and Shane O’Driscoll won gold in the lightweight men’s pair. Incredibly, all four rowers are based in the same Skibbereen rowing club in Cork, along with club-mate Denise Walsh who won a silver medal
in the women’s lightweight single skulls at the European Championships. On Off The Ball on Newstalk on Monday night, an interview with gold medallists Mark O’Donovan and Gary O’Driscoll was arranged but it soon came apparent that there were more than two people on the phone. Gary and Paul O’Donovan hijacked the interview to make it near impossible for interviewer Joe Molloy to decipher one Skibbereen accent from another.

Ariana Grande Joined By Justin Bieber For Manchester Benefit Gig
ARIANA GRANDE is to perform a benefit concert for victims of the Manchester bombing on Sunday, with a stellar line-up including Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. The singer will headline the One Love Manchester concert at the Old Trafford cricket ground, with support including Pharrell Williams, Usher, Take That and One Direction’s Niall Horan. Earlier on Tuesday, police said Grande was keen to return to the city “sooner rather than later”, after a suicide bombing at the Manchester Arena following her show last Monday killed 22 people and injured 116. Greater Manchester police’s chief constable, Ian Hopkins, said plans were being worked out for the singer to stage the concert nearly two weeks after the attack, to raise money for the victims and their families. He said he was “fairly confident” the event would go ahead. Police have consulted with the families of the victims about Grande returning to Manchester, and Hopkins said the majority were “very much in favour”. “There are some that clearly aren’t,” he added. “That is absolutely under-
standable.” The event will be held at Old Trafford cricket ground, which holds 50,000 people. A testimonial game for the Manchester United player Michael Carrick is due to take place at Old Trafford football ground, less than half a mile away, on the same day. The We Love Manchester Emergency Fund has raised £6m for people who have been injured or bereaved following the suicide bombing. In an open letter to fans posted on her social media accounts, Grande said: “My heart, prayers and condolences are with the victims of the Manchester attack and their loved ones. There is nothing I or anyone can do to take away the pain you are feeling or to make this better. However, I extend my hand and heart and everything I possibly can give to you and yours, should you want or need my help in any way. We will not quit or operate in fear. We won’t let this divide us. We won’t let hate win … Our response to this violence must be to come closer together, to help each other, to love more, to sing louder and to live more kindly and generously than we did before.”
Liam Gallagher:
‘I love you Manchester...’ LIAM GALLAGHER told Manchester that “normal service has resumed” after he debuted his first solo material - and covered six Oasis classics - at an emotional hometown gig on Tuesday night. Gallagher, 44, donated all proceeds from the sold-out concert at The Ritz to the victims of last week’s Manchester Arena concert blast. The singer applauded as heartfelt cries of “Stand up for the 22” rang out from the
crowd in reference to those killed at the Ariana Grande concert last week. Liam, who was joined on stage for one track by ex-Oasis bandmate Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, also performed in front of 22 candles in tribute. “Manchester, I love you,” he said, after closing the 14-song set with a moving a cappella rendition of his old band’s hit song Live Forever, before adding: “Look after yourselves.”
Cyclist Loses Damages Claim Over Injuries In Collision With Car A JUDGE said a cyclist was “highly negligent” for cycling without lights, according to a report in the Irish Times on Wednesday. A man who was injured in a collision between his unlit electric bicycle and a car has lost his High Court action for damages. Peter Duffy (59) from Drimnagh, Dublin, had sued Patrick Lyons (42), Dolphin’s Barn, Dublin, over the accident in Crumlin on the night of September 8, 2014. The court heard Mr Duffy was making a right turn on his electric bike from the Crumlin Road onto Rafter’s Road at about 9.15pm as Mr Lyons’ car approached the junction. He accepted he did not have lights on the bike
and was not wearing a helmet but said he was wearing a hi-vis vest and had reflectors on the bike. Mr Lyons told the court Mr Duffy came out in front of him from between two cars. He said he had no time to react and when he hit the brakes, the car skidded and hit the rear wheel of the bike. Dismissing the case, Mr Justice Anthony Barr said he was satisfied Mr Lyons had had no chance to avoid hitting Mr Duffy. As a grown man, Mr Duffy was “highly negligent” to cycle from the city centre to Drimnagh without lights on his bike, the judge said. He was also negligent in failing to wear a helmet, he added.
US Withdraws From Paris Climate Agreement US PRESIDENT Donald Trump last night withdrew the US from the Paris climate change pact. He said: “In order to fulfil my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord.” But President Trump added he may renegotiate a better deal for the US, saying: “We’re getting out, but we’ll start to negotiate and we’ll
see if we can make a deal that’s fair.” The Paris accord “is very unfair at the highest level to the United States,” he said. Trump says the agreement blocks the development of clean coal. “And the mines are starting to open up. We’re having a big opening,” he says. “In short the agreement doesn’t eliminate coal jobs, it just transfers those jobs out of the United States.”
Trump’s ‘Covfefe’ Tweet Confounds The World HILLARY CLINTON has picked up the “covfefe” and run with it, turning Donald Trump’s own term against him. The rivalry between the two picked up again on Wednesday when Ms Clinton blamed her election loss on cyber attacks by Russia and said Americans including associates of the Republican president likely had a hand in the effort. The Republican president struck back in a tweet late Wednesday, criticising his election opponent for not taking responsibility for her loss. “Crooked Hillary Clinton now blames everybody but herself, refuses to say she was a terrible candidate. Hits Facebook & even Dems & DNC,” he said. But Ms Clinton tweeted back:
“People in covfefe houses shouldn’t throw covfefe”. Earlier she had mocked the President’s made-up word, joking to a Code Conference in California that she “thought it was a hidden message to the Russians”, according to The Hill. • Can any of our readers shed light on the mysterious tweet? If so get in touch!
Dazed Tiger Woods Struggles To Walk In Police Arrest Video POLICE footage shows Tiger Woods struggling to walk after officers woke him at the wheel of his running Mercedes. The 14-time major golf champion was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in Florida and blamed his state on an “unexpected reaction” to a mix of prescription medicine. On Wednesday, Jupiter Police Department released dashboard footage of the former world number one failing to pass a sobriety test a short drive from his home. He is seen struggling to stay upright as he fails to walk in a straight line after getting out of his 2015 Mercedes AMG in the early hours of Monday.
The video also shows officers handcuffing the 41-year-old sportsman, who was unable to say where he was, as he can barely keep his eyes open. As an officer moves a light in front of his face during the test, he fails to follow it with his eyes. Officers described him as being co-operative despite his confused state and as having “slow, mumbled and slurred” speech. The force corroborated Woods’ claim that he did not have alcohol in his system. Woods, who is recovering from back surgery, apologised and said he took “full responsibility” after spending nearly four hours in jail.

Kerry Mass For Fallen Bikers THERE will be a memorial mass for all fallen bikers this July in Kerry. The event, which will take place at the Church of the Assumption in Moyvane on July 15, will give people from Kerry and the wider Munster area the opportunity to pay tribute to their late comrades. The idea came about when organiser Eileen O’Flaherty travelled with her partner to Monaghan for a similar mass. “The mass in Monaghan is supposed to cover all of Ireland,” Eileen said. “But it’s quite a distance to travel for anyone in the south. We were the only ones from this side of the country who went up to it.” They were so impressed with the mass they felt that they had to do something similar a bit closer to home. “We put a committee together and decided to organise one down here,” she said. “We approached the organisers up in Monaghan to ask if they’d mind if we had one in Kerry, and obviously they had no problem with it.” The mass has been promoted in Limerick, Clare, Cork and Kerry, so the organisers are hoping for a good turnout on the day. There will also be a special candle-lighting service to honour loved ones. “If you’re coming, you can order candles through us,” Eileen said. “They’ll have names printed on them and before the mass commences, a family member will be taking up their own loved one’s candle.”
THE past week has seen my phone emit a flurry of chirps, beeps and flashing LEDs. There have been alerts from Twitter or from an Aurora Watch UK app. Most of them have been yellow alerts with the occasional amber alert, letting me know that there is a slim possibility of seeing the aurora or Northern Lights. The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights are beautiful visual displays in the night sky. They are caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere and usually occur over the high northern latitudes or corresponding latitudes in the southern hemisphere. The southern half of Ireland isn’t somewhere that immediately springs to mind when looking for aurora, but needs must, and I have been on the hunt for
aurora from my home outside Killarney for the past number of years, with limited success. In reality, we are a few hundred miles too far south to be in with a good chance of seeing aurora, but bright displays of aurora have been seen from here before and so I live in hope. I have yet to see the wonderful green and purple colours synonymous with aurora, but I have captured them photographically. I have seen faint glows and shimmers in the sky on occasion, but nothing breathtaking as of yet. I’m still waiting for the big one, so give me a red alert and a clear moonless night and I will be out the door in a flash, camera in hand looking at the northern sky. To join in the fun, download an aurora alert app for your phone and sit back and wait. Who knows, the next alert could be the one.

‘Reality Of Town Council Abolition Support For Bereaved Parents Coming Home To Roost’ AT THE April 2017 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council I had the following notice of motion on the agenda: “That Kerry County Council calls on Rialtas na hÉireann to critically review the workings of the Municipal Area Authorities and to examine and report if they are effective replacements for the former Town Councils.” In the context of that motion I warmly welcome the letter (Killarney Advertiser, May 19, 2017) from my former Killarney Town Council colleague, Seán Counihan, which seeks to highlight the adverse impact of the abolition of Killarney Town Council. As Sean and many of your readers will know I wrote (Killarney Advertiser, January 30, 2014) and spoke frequently against the proposed abolition. I did so because I believed that Killarney as a dynamic tourist town needed to have immediate access to the funding generated locally from rates if it is to maintain the highest possible aesthetic standards. In one letter I wrote as follows: “All revenue collected in Killarney will accrue to Kerry County
Council and will be used for the provision of county-wide services. Revenue collected in a given location cannot be ring-fenced for that location.” The then coalition government of Fine Gael and Labour ignored all pleadings and proceeded, with the consent of the other major political parties, to disband the town councils that had served so well for over one hundred years. The reality, as Sean points out, is coming home to roost and the challenge facing the Killarney Municipal Area Authority is to fight might and main to try to get funding to ensure that the town is able to maintain the standards appropriate to its pre-eminent standing as a leading tourist destination. Rumour has it that some of those who wielded the ruthless axe of abolition are having second thoughts on the wisdom of their decision. If that is so, let them please speak up! ANAM CARA, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is hosting its monthly meeting for bereaved parents on Tuesday, June 13, from 7.30pm to 9pm in Recovery Haven, 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The meeting offers parents a safe and comfortable setting where they can connect with other bereaved parents who will understand the depth of their loss and grief. A bereaved mother speaking about the benefits of Anam Cara meetings said: Nothing is normal after the death of a child and it never will be again. Anam Cara helps. People may say that after, for example, two years you should just be able to pull up your socks and get on with it, but life is not like that when you lose a child. There is no timeline for getting over grief, it’s a continuous, daily thing. I would encourage any bereaved parents to come along. I know that anything that
is unknown is often really scary, however, it’s important people know there is no pressure or onus on anyone to talk at the meetings, just being there can help. Anam Cara have also produced an Information pack for bereaved parents containing seven booklets on topics such as A Dad’s Grief, Coping with Sudden Death and Supporting My Family. Likewise, a series of short videos with testimonies from bereaved parents who attend the Anam Cara groups can be viewed at anamcara. ie/videos. For more information or to order a free copy of the information pack, you can email info@anamcara.ie or ring 085-2888 888. Memories
Tech Talk Words: Chris Reina
Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech. support with suggestions.
This week we’re being nostalgic and speaking about Memories. There are reasons to use technology and reasons not to use it. There are also times to use it and times when it isn’t appropriate. However, a time I feel is very appropriate to use it is to record memories of an event, meeting or snippet of the past you may have forgotten. There is a multitude of ways to do this, but a good way to record an event is to use your devices inbuilt camera to take a picture or video - be this a wedding, communion, confirmation, holiday or family gathering. Another way to save information or memories you may see is to use an App called “Pocket” (www.getpocket.
com). Once you sign up for this free service, you simply choose to “share” information to your “Pocket” account. Once this is done, it is always there and you can retrieve it from any device. Imagine searching the internet and finding a picture from yourself in school you didn’t remember. Simply save this to Pocket and you will always have a copy available to you. The same is true for YouTube videos, web pages, stories, poems, articles and more. Pocket is your own Library of personalised information. Imagine it’s like a digital version of the shoebox you have in the back of your closet with old photos and clippings. You know the one I mean. Add to this the pictures or videos you’ve taken from those family and friends gatherings, and you’re on your way to the next level… sharing that information with others. Next weeks article will focus on the many ways to share your information with individuals, printing or with the general public.

Exfoliating Body Treatments Whether you are getting ready for a wedding, or holidays, it’s spray-tanning season, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio
BEFORE you have your spray tan, it is important to prepare the skin. Here at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio, we have two signature treatments that are perfect for this. Body scrub with oil massage This invigorating full body scrub uses a sea-salt exfoliating scrub, on a heated bed with hot towel removal. Relaxing long stroking massage movements aid lymphatic drainage and nourish the skin. This is the ideal preparation for the next spray tan, sun holiday, or sunbed session, giving the skin that extra glow. Body scrub with detoxifying wrap and oil massage This is an invigorating full-body scrub on a heated blanket, with hot towel removal. Sea clay is applied and you are wrapped in body wrapping and a heated blanket. An Indian head massage performed while sea clay gets to work detoxing the body of toxins. This treatment offers great anti-cellulite properties. After the clay is removed, nutrient-enriched oil is applied in deep tissue massage technique. Call us on 064-6632966 for more information.

In the wake of the Manchester attack, Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley says this new brand of attack targets the innocent and most vulnerable
We Cannot Stop Gathering In Song Or In Sport “WHAT have we done to the world? Look what we’ve done.” Those are the lyrics of the late and great Michael Jackson and, in today’s world, they have never been more relevant. When I heard about the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena I was, like everyone else, absolutely sickened. This new brand of attack does not target the powerful but instead targets the innocent and most vulnerable. They are aiming to instil fear into the hearts of everyone as you just don’t know where they will strike next. Those poor concertgoers were there for the taking. I’m sure for weeks and months fans of Ariana Grande planned and dreamt about going to her concert. They would have been singing her songs for weeks. They would have been planning outfits, hairstyles and makeup. The vast majority of the singer’s fans are very
young and so this particular act of terrorism has hit the world very hard. Innocent people who had gathered in song were left running for their lives and for some it would be the last time they would ever sing again. It is so utterly heartbreaking to think of those people who one minute were having the time of their lives, and the next, their lives were changed for good. I will admit that I started to wonder if it is safe to go anywhere. I myself am going to see Coldplay in concert in Croke Park and I began to feel fear grip at me. But we cannot stop gathering in song or in sport or in any way where we come together as one. Fear will not win. So continue to sing like no one is listening. Dance like no one is watching. Love like you have never been hurt. • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

Recipe

Eight eggs 150g sugar 50g chocolate powder 250g dark chocolate 50g butter Some butter and sugar for the rings
METHOD
Melt the chocolate and the butter in a bowl over warm water. Wisk the eggs with the sugar in a bowl over hot water till they are warm; be careful not to make scrambled egg! Then whisk the eggs cold; the volume should go up to three times the size. Add the chocolate powder inside the slight warm egg. Do not whisk too much. Add the melted chocolate and gently bring it under the whisked eggs. Fill it immediately into buttered and sugared rings set on greasing paper, this needs to happen fast because the mass will go hard. Don’t fill the rings too high the mass will rise to about the double volume. Cook in pre-heated oven at 190C for about eight to twelve minutes. Depending on the size of the ring, the middle should be soft ideal when you cut that it runs out.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail
DUBBED “The pinnacle of bespoke”, it’s understood this creation cost its owner around €12 million. That would make it one of the world’s most expensive new cars ever made. Revealed at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como, the one-off Rolls-Royce Sweptail creation was four years in the making. The two-seat tourer has levels of personalisation that will make your brain melt… and your bank account too. Hidden compartments located within the front doors concealing an automatically deploying attaché case made of carbon-fibre and leather containing the owner’s laptop, which is sealed securely via titanium and aluminium locks and clasps. The laptop cases come with hand-made luggage to match, naturally. If that’s not enough, the astonishing vehicle also houses a secret champagne
dispensary. Rolls Royce calls this the “coup de gras” of the Sweptail, which operates via a button to deploy a chilled bottle of bubbly and a pair of crystal champagne flutes. The distinctive Rolls-Royce trademark square grille is the largest ever implemented by the British car brand. The rear features a huge tapered glass roof, reflecting the Rolls-Royces of the 1920s and 1930s. It’s all about the attention to detail and you can bet there’s a few other details the owner has kept secret too, such as its cost – and perhaps a few more hidden compartments. The Sweptail could be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to multi-million-dollar one-off creations, remember, coach-building is in their heritage, and the only question now is ‘how deep are your pockets?’

No Ordinary Cop Car THE Isle of Man Police has announced it has recruited a BAC Mono Interceptor (what a cool name) to encourage safer driving on the Island that stages the world-famous TT motorcycle race. Claimed to be an “active member of the fleet, weighing in at just 580kg and powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine sourced from Ford tuner Mountune, the BAC is capable of hitting 100km/h in less than 2.8 seconds and topping out at more than 274km/h. Unfortunately, even those blistering figures aren’t enough for some of the regulars who visit the island and the Mono will work alongside the Isle of
Man police forces range of unmarked superbikes that target unsafe riding on the derestricted roads where the fastest cars hit 300kmh and the fastest bikes in excess of 330km/h during the TT race. It’s not known how long the island’s police force get to keep their Mono, which is on load from the low-volume British supercar-make.

Sir Roger’s Star Cars PROBABLY best remembered as James Bond of the 70s and early 80s, Sir Roger also played Simon Templar in The Saint and Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders. Between his Templar and Bond roles he also appeared in a little remembered film titled The Man Who Haunted Himself. Whether as Bond on the big screen, or Templar and Sinclair on TV, Moore quickly became associated with the sports and performance cars that essentially starred with him throughout his career and last week’s picture clearly depicted this association. Through Moore’s body of work to list five automotive icons forever linked to the quintessential British actor. They’re not necessarily the cars remembered for the best stunts – just cars with panache and great looks to match the character himself. Top to Bottom: 1. Volvo P1800 (The Saint) 2. Lamborghini Islero S (The Man Who Haunted Himself) 3. Lotus Esprit (The Spy Who Loved Me) 4. Alfa Romeo GTV6 (Octopussy) 5. Aston Martin DBS (The Persuaders)

Liam Lynch Škoda Partners With Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle For The Fifth Consecutive Year THE Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is partnering for the fifth consecutive year with Liam Lynch Motors ŠKODA. Taking place on Saturday, July 1, the event now in its 34th consecutive year welcomes thousands of leisure cyclists from across Ireland and abroad as they embark on a 180km journey along the spectacular Ring of Kerry to raise much needed funds for worthy Kerry-based causes. Last year, in excess of €1.7 million was raised by over 10,000 cyclists for charity. Liam Lynch of Liam Lynch Skoda Farranfore said” “We are thrilled to partner with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for the fifth consecutive year. This cycle is the biggest one-day charity fundraising event in Ireland and we are proud to be involved again this year, it certainly would not be such a success if it wasn’t for the huge effort of the organising committee and so many other volunteers who work so hard throughout the year in preparation for this one special day in the charity and cycling calendar. We look forward to welcoming the thousands of cyclists to Kerry for what promises to be a wonderful weekend.” There has a brilliant response to the beneficiary charities involved in the cycle this year, with Temple Street Foundation, Camphill Community Dingle, Down Syndrome Ireland, Derrynane Inshore Rescue Services, and Recovery Haven all at full capacity for registrations. These charities work tirelessly to provide support and services to the people of Kerry and across Ireland. Although there are limited places remaining, cyclists can still register to
cycle on behalf of the remaining worthy charities who include Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre; Talbot Grove; Social Action Group Rathmore; Kerry Parents & Friends Association; and Valentia Island Hospital/ Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, said: “We are delighted to have Liam Lynch SKODA on board again in 2017. They are one of our longest serving partners and their SKODA vehicles prove invaluable to the running of the event each year. We’ve been working hard preparing for the 2017 edition of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and this year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet. Not alone does this event benefit worthwhile charities at a local and national level, but bringing approximately 10,000 cyclists and their supporters to the area provides a huge local economic boost. Not surprisingly, the event is always popular with cyclists and there are limited places left. We would encourage participants thinking of cycling to ensure they register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.” For the most up-to-date information, you can visit the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to find out how to register and learn more about the charities involved in the cycle this year. More Than 4000 Conquer The Ring Of Beara CYCLISTS from as far afield as South Africa, America and Canada used pedal power on the Beara Peninsula for one of Ireland’s most captivating cycle routes. And a rainy morning failed utterly to dampen spirits on Saturday for the third annual Rig of Beara Cycle, Kenmare. There were three start/finish locations in Kenmare, Castletownbere and Glengarriff for the challenging 110km or 140km route. Communities along the Beara peninsula came out to support and welcomed the cyclists to their villages as well as encouraging them to keep going! Cyclists arrived back the finish line to a festival like atmosphere and were treated to a well-earned massage, Japanese hot tubs, custom designed medal, live music and food. The Ring of Beara Cycle was truly a family occasion with over 150 children taking part in the free children’s cycle around Kenmare in the morning. Proceeds from this event will go to two local charities South West Counselling and new charity partner for 2017, Castletownbere Community Hospital.

Council Aims To Reduce Its Energy Consumption By A Third By 2020
Launching the Optimising Power @Work programme at Kerry County Buildings were, front, Tim McSwiney (Senior Executive Engineer, KCC), Sandy McSwiney (Energy Officer, KCC), Moira Murrell (Chief Executive, KCC), Bronagh Sherlock (Office of Public Works), back, Charlie O’Sullivan (Director of Services, KCC), Alan Cooke (Aramark Consultants), Caimin Barrett (Aramark Consultants), Gerry Riordan (Senior Engineer).
A NEW nationwide programme aimed at reducing energy consumption in public buildings across Ireland is being rolled out at Kerry County Council’s headquarters at County Buildings in Tralee. The Optimising Power at Work (OP@W) Programme which is run by the Office of Public Works aims to change staff behaviour in relation to energy use and eliminate energy wastage within public buildings. Kerry County Council is the latest local authority to embrace the programme and has launched a number of initiatives aimed at achieving a onethird reduction in its energy consumption across Kerry County Council by 2020, a commitment made by all public sector bodies. The OP@W campaign, which began in 2008, has successfully created and maintained staff energy awareness regarding energy usage, conservation and wastage in public buildings. It originally targeted central government buildings but has since
Garden Magic
expanded into the wider public sector. Its core principle is the encouragement of behavioural change with the aim of identifying and eliminating wastage. In practical terms, the rollout of the programme in County Buildings will involve: The installation of metres which record energy usage across a number of different parts of the building which will allow data to be collected and energy consumption measures to be taken as a result An energy awareness day for staff, which took place on Thursday, and which was hosted by specialist energy consultants, Aramark The formation of an Energy Team comprising an ‘Energy Champion’ in all sections and business units of the council at County Buildings. Promotional signage and postering in the building Audits of night-time energy consumption to help reduce consumption at night-time, e.g. computer monitors not being powered off etc.
“THE wind is tossing the lilacs, The new leaves laugh in the sun, And the petals fall on the orchard wall, But for me the spring is done” – taken from May by Sara Teasdale. For me this verse perfectly describes May, which, sadly, has now passed. Apple trees are promising crops and there is little evidence of the daffodils and bluebells which brightened the early days of spring. There are so many plants in bloom at the moment, apart from the lilac, that it is difficult to choose any. However, two favourite roses of mine are in flower now, one is the floribunda rose which came out in 2015, ‘For Your Eyes Only’, a dusky pink single flower with a dark red splotch in the centre, it is low-growing and disease resistant. It is perfect for pots as well as in a border. My other favourite is the rambling rose, ‘Rambling Rector’, which has masses of scented white flowers with a very prominent yellow stamens. Hardy geraniums are also starting to flower in earnest. ‘Orion’ is a large flowering bright blue, while ‘Ballerina’ is a dainty variety as the name suggests. Geranium renardii has beautiful foliage, with veined white flowers, while G. macorrhizum is evergreen and puts up with any amount of shade. There truly is a geranium out there for you! These are busy days in the veg garden, busy for humans, and doubly busy for insects! Between aphids, mealy bugs, butterflies and whitefly it’s a wonder any veg end up on a plate! There are easy ways to prevent most unwanted visitors, though, and my best friend has become Enviromesh. This is a type of netting, with a mesh small enough to prevent even carrotfly. Using some short bamboo canes and some pieces of black three quarter inch water pipe, you can make very simple hoops over the crops which need protection. Cabbage collars are also a simple but effective solution to cabbage root fly problems. The cabbage rootfly is currently looking for host plants… the female will lay her eggs on the ground near the stem of your brassica, and it is the maggots which then eat your plant leading to its untimely demise. Collars can be bought, or made from carpet underlay or cardboard. There are very few chemicals actually available to the home grower for many of the pests and diseases we come across, but in general, cleanliness and good ventilation will prevent many fungal diseases. Don’t forget: always destroy diseased plant material, as opposed to putting it on the compost heap, many spores can live for years!

Deer Lodge Poised To Open In Near Future THE Minister for Mental Health Helen McEntee paid a visit to Deer Lodge in Killarney on Monday just days after Kerry Mental Health Services welcomed this week’s binding recommendation of the Labour Court in relation to the opening of the Killarney facility. In effect, the Labour Court recommendation means that Deer Lodge should open in the near future. “The next step is to identify an opening date for this much-needed facility. We will work to identify the earliest feasible opening date and we will let staff and their unions know about this opening date as quickly as possible,” stated the Health Service Executive Community Healthcare Organisation for Cork and Kerry. “This €13 million facility is of huge importance to the local people who need to access mental health services in Kerry. Above all, opening Deer Lodge will be a tremendous move for the people currently living in the outdated and entirely unsuitable O’Connor Unit. “Considerable work and investment has gone into getting Deer Lodge ready for opening. “We have been and remain confident that the staffing ratio we have proposed will ensure that residents will receive a high standard of care. The opening of Deer Lodge will mean that there will be an overall increase of eight beds in Mental Health Services in Kerry, and there will be a corresponding increase in staff number of 28.5.”

TOPFLIGHT basketball will return to Killarney for the 2017-18 season following an absence of almost a decade. Basketball Ireland confirmed on Monday that the St Paul’s Basketball Club application for a place in the Men’s National league Division One has been accepted. St Paul’s application to the Men’s’ National Competitions Committee (MNCC) of Basketball Ireland was submitted in recent weeks and it also involved a presentation and interview in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght last Saturday. Club members Paul Sheehan, Philip O’Connor and Mark O’Leary presented an impressive case before the adjudicating panel. St Paul’s Basketball Club Chairman Padraig Weldon said: “It is fantastic to welcome national league basketball back to Killarney. It is something that we have been striving for in recent years. “There is a great tradition of basketball in
Breakfast At Killarney Brewing Company THE Killarney Brewing Company on the Muckross Road hosted a hugely popular breakfast event on Saturday a for all the breweries that were attending the third Annual Killarney Beerfest. Barry Spellman of Killarney Brewing Company said: “We served American-style Spicy Bloody Mary’s with a Killarney Brewing Stout Head to clear any cobwebs from the Friday night before and some tasty French toast was also
on the menu. “It was a great way to get to meet all involved, share stories, trade ideas as well as introduce Mike Bank, our new head brewer, to the Irish craft beer scene. “It’s a very collaborative industry and its very rare we all get the opportunity to be in the one place to actually sit and enjoy each others company. This is definitely a new annual tradition.”
Killarney and having a senior team competing at national level gives our young players something to aspire to. It is a big step for everyone associated with the club and I am appealing to all past and present members and anyone interested to get involved. Even if you have zero knowledge of basketball, there are several areas where volunteers are more than welcome to assist the club with their time and expertise.” St Paul’s is one of four new teams that will compete in the league. The Killarney side plans to acquire the services of an American player and is also likely to include at least two European players. The rest of the squad will be made up of local Killarney players including former Irish schoolboy internationals Philip O’Connor and Mark Greene while St Paul’s also hope to reach out to other clubs in the East Kerry area.

THE Seanad Leas Chathaoirleach, Senator Paul Coghlan, has welcomed the announcement of a doubling of funding from €650,000 to €1.3 million under the major anti-illegal dumping initiative (ADI). The anti-illegal dumping initiative was launched in March and due to the huge demand for funding Minister Naughten has agreed to double the funding for more projects around the country and County Kerry. “I am delighted that Minister Naughten has decided to double his initial allocation of €650,000 to €1.3 million to support a new round of applications with total funding now standing at €1.3 million to clean up dumping blackspots and to target those responsible using SMART technology including drone surveillance. “In terms of a Kerry perspective, the Council has received €23,000 which will be focused on tackling eight particular locations such as Derra Bog, Ballinagare Bog, Short Mountain, Derrymore Beach, Bawnaglanna, Woodline, Killarney National Park and Reenacallee. “The funding will also provide for other measures such as covert surveillance, media campaigns, signage, and the purchase of trail cameras. “This funding shows Minister Naughten’s commitment to tackling illegal dumping. The battle is well and truly on to catch and prosecute those who are committing environmental and economic treason by dumping waste illegally across our countryside, roads and rivers.”

Roman holiday leads to sparkling plans Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: IC Photo Studio
T
HEIR paths first crossed at a birthday party and eight years later Treasa Foley and Micheál O’Neill found themselves planning a special celebration of their own. Treasa, from Cromane, Killorglin, and Micheál, from Barleymount West, Killarney, met in January 2008 at a 21st when they were introduced by a mutual friend. They got engaged in Rome in March 2016 and were wed recently in Mary, Star of the Sea Church in Cromane by the bride’s uncle Father Pat Murphy. Ian Cronin of IC Photo Studio captured the big day on camera, including photo-shoots on Cromane strand and at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. The newlyweds then re-joined their guests at the reception, in The Malton Hotel, Killarney, where both sets of parents, Margaret and Tom Foley and Nora and Michael O’Neill, helped them lead the celebrations. Treasa’s sisters Noelle Foley Coughlan and Caitriona Foley and her friend Róisín O’Sullivan were bridesmaids. Mícheál’s brother Shane O’Neill was the best man, while his friends
Thomas O’Donnell and Pádraig Sheahan were groomsmen. Treasa’s goddaughter and niece Croíadh Coughlan and her niece Éaladh Coughlan were flower girls. “Our wedding day was amazing – we couldn’t have asked for a more memorable day. Everything went off to plan!” said Treasa. “We were surrounded by our friends and family which was really what made the day most special to us.” Amanda Keane of Fossa Hair Salon and makeup artist Aine Doherty ensured the bridal hairstyling and makeup were picture-perfect. Treasa looked elegant in a Beckett Dress by Sottero & Midgley. Cal Callaghan of On Track Films was the videographer and Claire Counihan of Blossoms, Killorglin, took care of the floral arrangements. The newlyweds enjoyed a mini-moon in Trump International Hotel in Doonbeg, Co Clare, and will spend their honeymoon in South Africa later this year. Treasa is a primary school teacher in Mallow and Micheal works as an accountant with Fexco. The couple will reside in Barleymount West, Killarney.

In loving memory of my dear Dad Jack Cronin, 4 Marian Terrace, Killarney who died on the 5th of June 2003.
Remembrance is a golden chain, Death tries to break but all in vain, To have, to love, and then to part, Is the greatest sorrow of one’s heart,
Look around your garden Lord, And when he turns and smiles, Put your arms around him, And hold him for a while. It broke our hearts to lose you Dad, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.
The years may wipe out many things, But this they wipe out never, The memory of those happy days, When we were all together. Always loved and never forgotten by your Dad Ger and your brothers T.J and Junior. Pleasant in manner, patient in pain, Our loss is your eternal gain, Your cheery ways and smiling face, Are a pleasure to recall, You had a kindly word for each, And died beloved by all.
Loved and remembered every day By your Daughter Maria & all the family.

He never looks for praises He’s never one to boast He just goes on quietly working For those he loves the most His dreams are seldom spoken His wants are very few And most of the time his worries Will go unspoken too He’s there.... A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold to In times of stress and strife A true friend we can turn to When times are good or bad One of our greatest blessings, The man that we call Dad.
My eyes filled up with tears When I heard the news, It never occurred to me, How much I could lose,
Our lives go on without you Dad, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name, Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent the tears that fall, Living our lives without you, Is the hardest part of all, You did so many things for us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you, The special years will not return, When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. From your loving daughter Mary Doll and son-in-law Tom Xxx

But my heart tells me That he’ll always be with me, I’m glad he feels no pain Now he lives in a perfect land, I can still feel the soft touch On my shoulder of his loving hand, I lie in bed and cry at night, And I don’t feel any better Light, And I will love and miss him forever, Until the day we are again together. Together in that perfect place above, Filled with caring, sharing and love, But until that day comes, I will wipe my tears away. And hopefully see him again someday. Lovingly remembered from your sister Blondie and family. xxx
I hug my tear-stained pillow close When no one is around And cry for one I loved and lost And scream without a sound Others see me in the day And think I’m doing well But every day as evening sets I enters my own hell Time hasn’t healed my pain at all Or quieted my fears Night, alone in bed I shed those silent tears From your loving Son Thomas, Christina & Family So now you have found another home, So safe and sound where angels roam Some day you’ll meet us at the door And we’ll talk again and laugh some more. A Grandfather is a special gift Received from God above. He starts out with patience Then adds an abundance of love. He enjoys telling you stories About how he grew up. He’ll share his sandwich with you And let you drink out of his cup. He lets you get away with stuff That mom and dad won’t do. He’ll teach you how to do things Even share a secret or two. He’s always willing to listen To what you have to say. He knows how to make you smile And will never stand in your way. He has tremendous faith in you, He just has that special touch. It’s no wonder then Granda, Why you are loved so much! Missing you everyday, You were more like a father to us than a Grandfather, Love you always Kerryann & Richard

DAD If I could write a story It would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving father Who had a heart of gold,
Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, That we had throughout the years, Do the things we did before,
In loving memory of Pa Brien, late of 14 Ardshanavooley, Killarney who died on the 2nd June 2016. My grandad’s hands could heal my hurt Or cool my fevered brow. His care, and not a learned degree, Experience taught him how.
If I could write a million pages, But still be unable to say, Just how much I love and miss Him every single day. I will remember all he taught me, I’m hurt but wont be sad, Because he’ll send me down the answer And he’ll always be my dad. Always loved, never forgotten From your Son Richard, Daughter in law Bridge xxx GRANDAD We are sending a dove to heaven, With a parcel on its wings, Be careful how you open it, It’s full of beautiful things, It’s filled with a million kisses Wrapped up with a million hugs, It’s from your grandaughters Clarise-Doll-Cianna Who sent it with all their love. Always remember you Grandad XXXX
The same in every way, Just whisper a little prayer to me, At the dawn of each day, Just think of me gone ahead,
I always knew that I was loved By deeds, a hug or a smile. He proved it in so many ways... ‘Twas special-grandad style.
For my love is a blessing, In death it still can last, Forget your troubles and your worries,
Sometimes he was my playmate Oft’times my mentor, too. I learned to take life as it came; That’s helped me my life through.
They are mine forever more, I watch and care and love for you, From heavens open door, And when your road gets Rough and rocky, And your down and need a crutch, Remember, I’m right beside you, Just an inch too short to touch. Loved and never forgotten from your daughter Teresa, son-in-law Mike, and family Xxx
Then I grew up and he grew old, Yet our loves had no end, For I was blessed long as he lived, ‘Cause Grandad, you were my best friend. From your loving granddaughter Pamela, Paddy & Family. I miss your laughing, Singing and dancing And the happy times we spent with you. You little bumblebee. From all your great grandchildren.

My Father was a hero Known around this world. He was everything to me, For I was his baby girl. I’d write about the lessons. He taught me right from wrong. He instilled in me the values That one day I’d be strong. He taught me to face my fears, Take each day as it comes, For there are things that We can’t change. He would say what’s done is done. He would say hold your head up high, Carry yourself with pride. Thanks to him, I am somebody, I will never run and hide. If I could write a story, It would be the greatest ever told. I’d write about my daddy, For he had a heart of gold.
In loving memory of Pa Brien, late of 14 Ardshanavooley, Killarney who died on the 2nd June 2016. When I’m feeling desperate and lonely, I search for your face in a cloud, And though my lips may be silent, My heart cries out ever so loud. How can it be that you have left me? Are you safe in heaven above? Has God in his goodness embraced you, With his sweet, everlasting LOVE? Do you know that I yearn to hold you? Can you hear me repeating your name? Can you see that I’m lost without you Pa. That nothing….no nothings the same! In time will I be more accepting? Will my poor heart begin to mend? And will I find peace in believing I’ll be with you once again?

Legion Down But Not Out As Stacks Coast To Quarterfinal their route through the back door, writes Adam Moynihan
It was all too easy for the Rockies in Connolly Park as Legion are left plotting
County Championship (Round 2A) Austin Stacks 4-13 Legion 3-6
“
Whatever name comes out of the hat, Legion have a lot of work to do if they have any designs on reaching the latter stages of this year’s championship
“
A SPIRITED second half fightback wasn’t enough for the Legion in Connolly Park last Friday evening as they fell to a heavy defeat against Austin Stacks in Round 2A of the County Championship. Stacks dominated the first half and found themselves 16 points to the good early on in the second before a flurry of Legion scores cut the deficit to seven. Unfortunately for Alan O’Neill’s men it was very much a case of too little, too late as Stacks coasted to a comfortable ten-point win. Both of these sides had to navigate tricky replays the previous weekend; Stacks beat St Kieran’s on Saturday while Legion finally got the better of Kenmare on the Sunday. The extra day’s rest must have done the Rockies wonders because they absolutely flew out of the traps in this one. They had the ball in the net within the first 60 seconds when Shane O’Callaghan cut in along the endline and squared for Michael O’Donnell who calmly applied the finish. David Mannix quickly added a point and Legion were already on the ropes. James O’Donoghue steadied the ship with two excellent scores in the 4th minute but Stacks completely dominated the remainder of the half, racking up a further 1-6 without reply. Half-back Jack Morgan was solely responsible for Stacks’ second goal as he finished off an impressive solo run by firing accurately beyond the reach of Legion keeper Brian Kelly. O’Donoghue kicked the final score of the period with a free to leave his team trailing by 10 at the break, Stacks 2-7 Legion 0-3. The Legion management opted to leave Conor Keane out of the starting 15 and whatever the
reasoning behind the decision, you certainly couldn’t say that it helped the side’s chances on the night. Both he and Tom Moriarty were brought on at half time but any hopes that their introduction would ignite a memorable Legion comeback

were fairly abruptly abandoned when Greg Horan stole in for another goal in the 32nd minute. Legion were leaving themselves frighteningly open at the back and a minute later they were 16 points down when midfielder Wayne Guthrie ghosted in for yet another Stacks goal. The Legion players deserve some credit for putting up a fight for the remainder of the game and goals from Jamie O’Sullivan, Jack O’Neill and a James O’Donoghue penalty actually cut the deficit to seven with ten minutes to go. They couldn’t find that fourth goal, though, and Stacks sharpshooter David Mannix kicked the final three scores of the evening to seal a relatively easy 4-13 to 3-6 win. The Tralee kingpins now advance to the quarter finals along with fellow club sides Dr Crokes, Rathmore and Kerins O’Rahilly’s. Legion, meanwhile, now enter Round 3 where they’ll face either South Kerry, East Kerry or West Kerry (Kenmare Shamrocks are the other team on that side of the draw but they’ve already played Legion around eighteen times this year so they can’t be drawn to play them again). You would obviously be hoping to avoid South Kerry but East Kerry wouldn’t exactly be a walk in the park either. Whatever name comes out of the hat, Legion have a lot of work to do if they have any designs on reaching the latter stages of this year’s championship. Austin Stacks scorers: David Mannix (0-7, 2f), Michael O’Donnell (1-1, 1f), Wayne Guthrie (1-1), Greg Horan (1-1), Jack Morgan (1-0), Jack O’Shea (0-1), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1) and Denis McElligott (0-1). Legion scorers: James O’Donoghue (1-4, 1pen & 2f), Jamie O’Sullivan (1-0), Jack O’Neill (1-0) and Conor Keane (0-2, 1f).

Sport Sport Ireland Confirm That Kerry Footballer Brendan O’Sullivan Tested Positive For A Banned Stimulant 02.06.17
Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald KERRY footballer Brendan O’Sullivan failed a drugs test last year, the Kerry County Board of the GAA has confirmed over this past weekend. The Valentia Young Islander clubman was tested as part of Sport Ireland’s doping controls after last year’s Allianz League final defeat by Dublin. He came off the bench as a substitute, and delivered a positive finding for a banned substance. The statement states that O’Sullivan has cooperated fully with Sport Ireland and that it has been accepted that the violation was unintentional and that the player has already fully served his suspension. Brendan O’Sullivan did not feature again for Kerry in 2016. He was back in action, again as a substitute, when the Kingdom opened their 2017 Allianz League campaign against Donegal in February of this year. “On the 24th of April 2016 Brendan O’Sullivan (Valentia Young Islanders & Kerry) underwent a routine Sport Ireland doping control test following the Allianz League final,” the statement reads. “The results of the test indicated a rule violation. Brendan O’Sullivan fully cooperated in assisting Sport Ireland. The subsequent findings of Sport Ireland accepted that the rule violation was not
intentional and the resultant suspension has been served. “Sport Ireland is expected to deliver a written decision shortly. All involved with Kerry GAA are delighted to see Brendan back playing football. Kerry County Committee and Team Management will be making no further comments until the Sport Ireland report has been issued.” It is expected that this report will be issued within the next two weeks.”
Unsafe Supplements
Sport Ireland advises athletes there are no guarantees that any supplement is safe (free from prohibited substances). If an athlete chooses to consume a supplement Sport Ireland recommends they seek advice from a sports dietician and follow Sport Ireland’s risk minimisation guidelines. Back in 2008 Aidan O’Mahony tested positive for a drug, but in his case the specimen showed high levels of salbutamol taken with an inhaler. However, he is an asthmatic and the medication was prescribed. As was the case with Brendan O’Sullivan, taking the substance was unintentional. In June 2015 Thomas Connolly, a Monaghan GAA player tested positive for a banned substance and picked up a two-year ban.
Dr Una May, director of the Irish Sports Council’s anti-doping unit, has said that doping is not a major issue in the GAA. Sport Ireland conducted blood and urine tests on 1,000 sports people and just 97 of these were GAA sports people. Four Ladies footballers and 4 camogie players were tested.
Kerry Junior Management Team are named
Kerry Junior Manager, Jimmy Keane of Brosna has named his management team and this was due be ratified at last Monday night’s County Committee. His selectors are Paul Quinn (An Ghaeltacht), Niall O’Mahony (Spa) and John O’Connell (Tarbert) Kerry will play Limerick in the Munster Junior semi final as a curtain raiser to the senior semi final on June 11th or 12th in Cusack Park. Clare just edged out Limerick 1-13 to 1-12 in last Sunday’s opening salvo. Cork escaped by the skin of their teeth in Fraher field when they had to rely on 36-year-old veteran, Donncha O Connor to come off the bench and score those invaluable three points, one from a free. Final score, Cork 1-12 to Waterford’s 1-11. County Poc Fada takes place on Bank holiday Monday, June 5, on Kerry Head mountain.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy AND that’s that! A very disappointing end to Munster’s season last weekend as the men in blue on the day were humbled by the men in red. This was a pretty poor showing by Munster who never lived up to their potential and the schoolboy errors were costly. Having said all that, Scarlets were sublime, as they were the week before against Leinster. I’m sure Munster will learn from this and to be honest this season has been a huge success
compared to recent seasons. The lads will take a well-earned rest and I for one am looking forward to next season already. Focus now switches to the British and Irish Lions who kick off their tour tomorrow with a match against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians. With a pretty tough schedule of 10 matches and three of those against the All Backs, this promises to be a riveting series. The All Blacks are releasing players for the non test matches and the Lions will need to hit the ground running with the Blues, the Crusaders, the Highlanders, the Chiefs and the Hurricanes providing very stiff competition. There will be no easy match for the Lions and Warren Gatland will have to plan
Congratulations Congratulations to Gary Cronin, Aghadoe, who won bronze in the 400m representing senior boys, St Brendan’s College, at Munster School Track & Field at the weekend CIT, Cork.
accordingly. Munster are represented by CJ Stander, Conor Murray and Peter O’Mahony who will not be lacking motivation after the past few weeks. Let’s hope the Irish contingent do themselves proud. Finally, with the summer finally here, we are hitting the ground running with Touch Rugby kicking off at Aghadoe for adults every Tuesday evening between 7 and 9. Touch rugby is great fun, there is no tackling and tags aren’t needed. All are welcome to come along. Also, we kicked off Tag Rugby for kids last Saturday and a fantastic day was had at Aghadoe. This is for both boys and girls aged between 6 and 12 and promises to be great fun for all involved.

smalltalk
Spa native and dual star Andrew Fitzgerald talks to Adam Moynihan about football, basketball and his old school Nokia
Hi Andrew. Thanks for talking to us. No problem. Thanks for the call.
Are you playing ball at the moment? Just back playing football the last couple of weeks. The basketball season seems to get longer every year!
What do you make of Spa’s season so far? I suppose the loss in the Intermediate was disappointing but there are a lot of promising young players breaking into the senior and junior teams which is a big plus.
Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? James “Bubu” Fleming used to always give me a hard time when I started out playing for St Paul’s long ago. He still does, actually.
Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? There is one lad in particular but I’d be in big trouble if I gave him away.
Who’s the biggest moaner? To be honest, all the Spa lads are very positive. But there are probably too many to mention on the Killorglin basketball team I played with last year!
Who’s the worst-dressed? Me, I suppose. I only have tracksuits and runners.
Who spends the most time in the gym? As a physical therapist a lot of the work I do with people is in the gym, so probably me. Although Spa goalie James Devane would be hard to beat.
If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for Spa this year, who would it be? Anthony Morris could really tighten up the defence.
Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? In football, Mike “Stam” O’Donoghue. In basketball, Dan Griffin.
Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? I played basketball with Limerick’s John Galvin for a few years and I was always amazed at how he would often
play a football and basketball game on the same day. And he did it for nearly 20 years.
If you had to transfer to another Killarney club, who would it be? I couldn’t leave Spa.
What’s your proudest sporting moment? In 2013 there was no National League team in Kerry, so myself and Dan Griffin played with Blue Demons in Cork. Winning the cup final against Galway in the last couple of seconds was special.
And the most embarrassing? I remember wearing the wrong colour shorts for Spa years ago and the chairman got me to change them during the game.
If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? LeBron of course!
What are your five favourite sports in order? Basketball, football, athletics, rugby and gymnastics.
What would you sing at karaoke?
Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at?
Who’s the most famous person in your phone?
Horse racing, but I think I might be a bit too big.
I don’t think anyone would let me sing. Barry Geraghty.
What’s the best sporting moment of all time?
What would you have for your last meal?
Argentina beating the USA in the 2004 Olympic basketball semi-final really stands out to me.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Do you have any nicknames? Fitz.
Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? I have an old Nokia phone.
So no emojis? No, my phone doesn’t do emojis.
What’s the best show on TV? Bloodline.
What’s your favourite song at the moment?
Apple tart. We’ll keep it local: Michael Fassbender.
And can you tell me a joke? My uncle Andy has great jokes. He told me this one last week. Did you hear about the man who stole the calendar?
No. He got 12 months.
Nice one Andy! Thanks Adam!
Anything by Peter Locke.

Barnardos Tournament: Our U10 and U11 teams headed for Douglas Hall AFC last weekend for the annual #Barnados Kids For Kids Munster soccer tournament. The weather was sunny and the organisation very good. Our U10 Green and Gold Teams finished second and third in the Shield competition. (The teams that beat them in group games contested the final.) The U11 Green Team finished third in the Cup after losing a semi to hosts, holders and eventual champions Douglas Hall AFC. Their U11 White team counterparts provided the main drama of the day. After winning their shield semi-final on penalties they held out for a scoreless draw with neighbours Killarney Athletic A.F.C. in the final. The penalty shoot-out went one way and then the other, before sudden death drama went the way of the Hoops, cheered on by their raucous u11 and u10 teammates! Congratulations to Killarney Swimming Club members, Mary Clare McCarthy and Antionette O’Leary, who received the call up to take part in the Special Olympics Regional Advancement Competition in UL last Saturday the 27th of May. This was a huge achievement for both girls and well deserved after many months of hard training. Before setting out for Limerick, the club put on a “good luck” party with presentations being made to both girls. On the day, both swimmers represented their families, Club and County in some serious
style with Mary Clare showing true grit and determination to win the gold medal in the 200 metres freestyle and a silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle while Antoinette absolutely sparkled in the pool to win a precious gold medal in the 100 metres freestyle event & the silver medal in the 100 metres backstroke. Well done to both girls - we are all so proud of you.

Sport Muckross Rowing Club
LEE REGATTA: On Saturday 20th May, the club had a successful outing to the Lee Regatta held at the Marina in Cork city. The sprint regatta attracted over 400 crews and proved a great competitive test for all entrants. Congratulations to Oran O’Donoghue, winner of the Mens Junior 16 Single Scull who saw off the competition from Cork, Shannon and Cappoquin. A second gold medal finish came for Muckross in the Womens Junior 14 Quad. Congrats to the crew of Aisling Coffey, Sarah Fleming, Liadh Beazley, Martha Doolan and cox Ian Coffey who were race winners ahead of crews from Cork, Skibbereen, Lee and Lee Valley. There were great second and third place finishes for the club in several categories. Well done to our Mens Club Four, Womens Novice Quad, Womens J16 Quad, Womens J15 Eight, Mens J14 Octuple and Womens J14 Double who all finished second. Third place finishes were also recorded in the Mens Club Quad, Womens Club Quad, Womens J16 Single Scull, Womens J14 Quad (B crew) and Mens J14 Quad. Well done to all! KILLARNEY REGATTA: The month of June is upon us and just three weeks remain to the staging of the 232nd annual Killarney Regatta on Sunday 25th June. Our rowers, coxes and coaches are working hard in training and hopeful of success on the day. To all involved, keep up the good work! We’ve witnessed some great battles fought out on the lake at O’Mahony’s Point and no doubt this contest in traditional Killarney rowing will produce some compelling racing once again between the rowing clubs of the Killarney valley. With a claim to the being the world’s oldest surviving regatta, the event remains a most special fixture in the town’s sporting history. Thanks to all who supported last weekend’s Church Gate collection in support of the regatta. INTERNATIONAL: New records in Irish rowing were set last weekend as the Skibbereen rowing machine again produced truly exceptional medal winning performances at the European Rowing Championships. With heavyweight sculler Sanita Puspure out of action, the Irish squad comprised five Skibbereen rowers who all returned home as European Championship medallists. The O’Donovan brothers created another sensational finish coming from fourth in the third quarter of the race to finish second only to France who are increasingly recognized as one of the best crews to have raced in the category. Meanwhile, Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll set a blistering pace from start to finish to bring home gold in the Mens Lightweight Pair. Finally, Denise Walsh also brought a power-
02.06.17 ful finish from the back of the pack to secure another silver medal for Ireland. Truly outstanding results for Ireland and even more so for the Skibbereen club. Next up for the Irish rowing squad is the second of three World Cup Regattas in Poland in June. Following the departure of High Performance Director Morten Espersen, who oversaw Ireland’s performance in the Rio 2016 Olympics, Rowing Ireland has announced the appointment of former Italian Olympian Antonio Maurogiovanni to lead the High Performance national squad. Antonio brings a wealth of experience in both rowing and coaching including seven Olympic Games with involvement in Italy, the Netherlands and Australia.

Dr Crokes Club
Ladies U12 County League (R.2) The news of the night for this fixture was that Pia Hickey forfeited her school trip to Dublin,no less, and went on to put in a massive display from midfield, scoring two points ,for good measure. The team started brightly, with points as well by Sarah Cooper(who had five overall). Kilcummin s first score was a goal and for the remainder of the half both teams were evenly matched
with some wonderful individual displays on both sides ,none more than Crokes full back Laura O’ Shea. She was ably assisted by Ali O ‘Donoghue, Ester Greene (who was captain for the game),and Selina Thawiset. Ella Bartlett and Jocelyn Hickey were very involved in the play also. However, it was a great goal by Katie McCarthy on the stroke of half time that put a little day light between the teams. After some great play Saoirse O ‘ Sullivan got injured and was replaced by Sadhbh Stack who combined brilliantly with Sinead Oliver and Cara O’ Sullivan for a point .Gráinne Byrne and Ella Barrett got on the ball to assist Leah McMahon in one the three points she scored on the night. Amy Clifford and Alicia Keane bolstered the back line when they came under pressure for spells in the second half, and with Hollie Cronin pulling her hand to a few goal bound shots, the team ran out winners on a score of 1-10 to 1-05. Medal Presentation: The Dr Crokes All Ireland Champions were honoured at a Banquet in the Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday night. The team were presented with their medals and a number of presentations were made to a number of people including Colm Cooper and Eoin Brosnan. Colm O’Mahony played at the drinks reception and Celtic Steps provided entertainment during the meal. Loose cannons had patrons dancing all night. Highlights of the 2016/2017 championship were shown on the big screen. It was a most enjoyable night! Lotto 9, 7, 22, 23. Jackpot €3000. Not won Match 3 7 by €60. Next draw on Sunday 4th of June in Tatler Jack. Jackpot €3300.

MD O’SHEA EAST REGION U16 LEAGUE - DIVISION 4 FINAL: Kilgarvan/Tuosist 3-17 Dr Crokes B 0-07 The last final in this years MD O’Shea East Region U16 League saw Dr Crokes B team travel to Kilgarvan to take on Kilgarvan/Tuosist in the Division 4 final on Sunday evening. Kilgarvan /Tousist proved the stronger on the night. Dr Crokes started well scoring the opening point. However, Kilgarvan/Tuosist then dominated proceedings and notched up 8 points and a goal before Dr Crokes were to score again. Kilgarvan / Tuosist rattled the net for a second goal, giving the goalie no chance, in the last minutes of the first half. Score at the break: Kilgarvan/Tousist 2-09 Dr Crokes B 0-03. On resumption, Kilgarvan/Tuosist continued to play some lovely football with great team work and accurate kick passing and the scores kept coming. The Dr Crokes keeper made 2 great saves and the team played with commitment to the final whistle. However, Dr Crokes had a mountain to climb and were unable to overcome the very skillful and well prepared Kilgarvan/Tuosist team. Final score: Kilgarvan/Tuosist 3-17 Dr Crokes

Firies Coiste Na nOg
U14 Lee Strand Division 4 County League Final. Played in Listry on Wednesday evening last, Firies U14 Boys were crowned division four league champions against near neighbours Beaufort. Beaufort, who beat Firies in an earlier round of the league, were the pre match favorites. Indeed Beaufort enjoyed a lot of possession early in the first half and will be disappointed with their return from same while Firies in contrast were very efficient on the ball and converted the majority of their opportunities when arose. Firies played with great fluidity when in possession and their ability to utilize the kick pass was a pleasure to watch throughout. Both sides went in at the short whistle level on a score-line of 2-8 apiece. The second half was an exciting affair and both teams must be complimented for the commitment shown throughout. The game was in the balance throughout but a goal late in the second half gave Firies the breathing space required and ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 5-13 to 3-12.

Inaugural Mid Kerry Primary Schools Girls Blitz:It is a sign of the growth of Ladies Gaelic Football that 12 Mid Kerry Schools participated in a Mid Kerry organised blitz in Milltown today. We had two groups of four in the 11 a side competition, and four teams in the 7 a side competition. The two groups in the 11 a side were drawn with Glenbeigh, Naomh Mhuire Killorglin, Cromane and Kilgobnet. The second group was comprised of Cullina, Nagle Rice Milltown, Castlemaine and Caragh Lake. In each group, all teams played three games each. Our 7 a side competition was comprised of teams from Castledrum, Fybough, Boheshill and Ballyfinnane. As the 11 a side, all teams had three games in the round. We were treated to some excellent football by the girls. There was plenty of excitement with crossbars and posts being hit regularly in nearly every game. After the round robin, Ballyfinnane and Castledrum topped the group and proceeded to the final. The final turned out to be a cracker. On my count both teams exchanged the lead six times during the game, with not more than two points separating
theme until the last three minutes when the game was levelled. Both sides went all out to win the game with chances going a begging. With the last kick of the game Castledrum had a shot hit the left upright, bounce along the crossbar and then hit the right upright and drop over for the winning point. With such a score Castledrum were crowned the inaugural 7 a side Mid Kerry Primary Schools Girls Champions.
